The Toyota Grand Prix in Long Beach was an annual Pro/Celebrity race in Toyota street cars that was first run in 1977.  The race has always had lots of carnage and is typically more fun to watch than the Indy/IRL/ChampCar parade of high-powered wing-equipped spec-chassis 'race-cars' held later in the day.  Unfortunately Toyota pulled their support of the race when they moved their USA HQ from Torrance, CA to somewhere in Texas, but the glory of the Pro/Celebrity races lives on in spectacular crashes (like the one where George Lucas is punished for Episodes 1,2,3) s and old used race cars. Find this 1991 Toyota Celica GT Racer here on eBay bidding for $5,500 in Mundelein, IL with 4 days to go.

Cosco clears last hurdle in OOIL takeover as US gives approval      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
COSCO Shipping Holdings says it has the long awaited approval from US regulators of its US$6.3 billion acquisition of Hong Kong's Orient Overseas International Ltd (OOIL) the parent of its principal holding Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Reuters reports. While the US Committee on Foreign Investment has no specific jurisdiction over the takeover of one Chinese company by another, the United States is free to forbid such a company to trade with in United States ports.Cosco said on June 30 that all pre-conditions for the OOIL offer made last year had been met after receiving approval by the Chinese anti-monopoly regulator. It already has approvals from European and United States anti-monopoly regulators. In a regulatory filing, Cosco said the US Committee on Foreign Investment had notified it that it does not have any outstanding security issues following an agreement with the US government to divest the Long Beach container terminal business to a third party.Cosco said ownership of the container terminal business will be transferred to a trust while a buyer is sought. There had been concerns the trade fight between Beijing and Washington might end up hampering major deals by US or Chinese firms seeking regulatory approval.Cosco's acquisition of OOIL will see the Chinese shipping giant become the world's third-largest container shipping line. The deal is the latest in a wave of mergers and acquisitions in global container shipping that has left the top six shipping lines controlling 63 per cent of the market and comes at a time when the industry is experiencing a recovery after a lengthy downturn.

Interview with 'Brimstone' John Allen: 'Anyone can be a writer. All one needs to do is write a million words.'      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

John Allen was born in Long Beach, CA. An engineer “by education, training, and experience,” he describes himself as “a recovering engineer.”  He left engineering to become the junior partner in Allen & Allen Semiotics Inc., a corporation that his wife, Lynn, launched for their diversified home business. Their projects include designing databases for mid-sized companies. John Allen holds a BS from the United States Air Force Academy, an MS from the University of Southern California, and an MA from the University of California, Riverside.

You can visit his website at http://louiseconandoyle.com/.

Q: Welcome to The Writer's Life!  Now that your book has been published, we’d love to find out more about the process.  Can we begin by having you take us at the beginning?  When did you come up with the idea to write your book?

A: It began all the way back in the 1980's when I read an essay by Martin Gardner entitled The Irrelevance of Arthur Conan Doyle. Gardner, a renowned skeptic, argued that Arthur Conan Doyle could not have created Sherlock Holmes because Arthur was so gullible, being fooled by every cheap medium and fraudster of his day. Gardner failed to identify an alternative author, so I took that task on myself. Some thirty years later, I published Shadow Woman: The True Creator of Sherlock Holmes. In that book, I present my evidence that it was Louise Conan Doyle, Arthur's first wife, who created Sherlock Holmes and wrote the early adventures. The Louise Conan Doyle mystery series is an outgrowth of that first effort to bring long overdue attention to that remarkable woman. Brimstone is the first book in the planned series of twelve.

Q: How hard was it to write a book like this and do you have any tips that you could pass on which would make the journey easier for other writers?

A: For me it was particularly difficult to write Brimstone, since I first had to learn to write fiction. (I'm more comfortable writing essays and non-fictional books.) It took me five years to complete Brimstone, and the current version is the result of my third complete re-write. I'm quite proud of that book.

With respect to any tips I have for budding writers, I will simply relay one that I learned from an essay by Jerry Pournelle, the sci-fi writer. Anyone can be a good writer. All one needs to do is write a million words. In my case, I suspect he missed by half. I'm approaching the two million word mark. I'll leave it to others to determine whether or not I've become a good writer.

Q: Who is your publisher and how did you find them or did you self-publish?

A: Lynn, my wife of 22 years, launched a home business designing custom databases while I continued to bring in the legal tender in conventional nine-to-five fashion. After she doubled the income of our home venture three years in a row, she taught me how to program databases. I then left my engineering job to join Allen & Allen Semiotics, Inc. as the junior partner. When I began writing books on wrongful conviction, my other avocation, Lynn expanded A&A to include book publishing, teaching herself that skill as well. As I've improved my writing craft, she's improved her publishing craft. Brimstone is simply a beautiful book.

Q: Is there anything that surprised you about getting your first book published?

A: Forbes magazine published an article in 2013 explaining that, even then, there were somewhere between 600,000 and 1,000,000 new books published each year in the U.S. alone. It was a bit of a harsh realization that I would literally be one in a million trying to get the public to look at my new book. We are undeterred though. We have a quality product based on a timely revelation of a woman finally getting credit for her work. We're pretty confident a large number of people will indeed take a look at Brimstone, Book 1 in the Louise Conan Doyle Mystery Series.

Q: What other books are you working on and when will they be published?

A. I'm 80% complete with Book 2 in the series, and that one is called Gambit. Lynn and I, you might have noticed, have settled on two syllable, single word titles. Gambit will be published later this year. I have already outlined Book 3, and that will be called Ember. I hope that Ember will be ready late this year or early next year.

Q: What’s one fact about your book that would surprise people?

A. Brimstone and the other books are filled with tricky secret references, buried for the clever reader to find. The story can be read and enjoyed without this extra detective work on the part of the reader, but the allusions are there parallel to the ones found in Sherlock Holmes.

When she wrote the adventures, the real Louise Conan Doyle embedded a large number of allusions in her stories, so many that they form a sub-text to the obvious Holmes adventure on the surface. In her subtext, Louise uses Holmes and Watson to make her case for the equality of all mankind.

To understand how difficult it might be to write in such allusionary fashion, I decided to incorporate allusions into each book in my Louise Conan Doyle mystery series. I now find that it is not difficult at all to include allusions. What I still can't do is incorporate them anywhere near as well as Louise did, and I can't come close to forming them into a coherent sub-text.

The bottom line is that there are numerous allusions in Brimstone for people to discover or overlook. Some are obvious. Some are completely opaque to anyone other than the author.

Q: Finally, what message are you trying to get across with your book?

A: A mystery writer's prime directive is to provide the readers with an intriguing mystery that will be investigated by an interesting personality, and I believe I have done that. Beyond that prime directive, I have two other hopes. First, I hope that the public will began to recognize Louise Hawkins Conan Doyle for her work and her brilliance. Second, I hope that the readers will become more aware of the problem of wrongful conviction. Each plot in the Louise Conan Doyle mystery series is based on an actual wrongful conviction from today's America transported back to Victorian England. In the Author's Note at the end of each book, I explain the relationship.

Inside the Book

Title: BRIMSTONE
Author: John Allen
Publisher: Allen & Allen Semiotics Inc.
Pages: 224
Genre: Historical Fiction/Women Sleuths/Mystery/Suspense/Thriller
BOOK BLURB:
Author John Allen has a theory about the creator of Sherlock Holmes:
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did not create Holmes. It was Doyle’s wife, Louise Hawkins Conan Doyle, who gave birth to the beloved sleuth.

Allen has put his beliefs to the test, writing and publishing the first of a projected 12-novel series of Holmes mysteries titled BRIMSTONE. His detective is Louise Hawkins Conan Doyle, and Allen names her as the author of the tale he presents, set in 1879 Bristol, England.

In a previous book, SHADOW WOMAN, Allen set out to prove that Louise was the true creator of Sherlock Holmes. The inspiration for his startling and controversial theory of authorship was a 1980s essay by Martin Gardner called “The Irrelevance of Arthur Conan Doyle.” Gardner claimed that Arthur was “too gullible and to easily duped to have created Sherlock Holmes.”

Allen determined that Gardner was correct, but Gardner identified no alternative author. Allen continues, “So I decided to give it a try. I came to suspect Louise as the actual author, but I lacked the knowledge and tools to make a solid case.”

Then the Internet came along, giving Allen a valuable research tool. He became convinced that Louise did in fact create Sherlock Holmes. Allen presented his case in SHADOW WOMAN, which was published in 2017. To further advance Louise as Holmes’s creator, to give her the credit he believes she is due, he is now featuring her in a series of mystery novels, the first of which is BRIMSTONE.

As if Allen hadn’t set the bar too high already, he has added a subtext to BRIMSTONE that explores contemporary wrongful convictions through his Victorian thrillers.

BRIMSTONE brims with appeal to multiple audiences, from lovers of detective stories to those interested in justice for the wrongfully convicted. Sherlock Holmes would be proud.

HISTORY OF THE SHOW
Disney's Beauty and the Beast is a musical based upon the 1991 Disney film. After completing tryouts in Houston, Disney's Beauty and the Beast premiered on Broadway on April 18, 1994, starring Susan Egan and Terrence Mann as Belle and Beast respectfully. The musical was a commercial success and well-received by audiences. It has since grossed more than $1.4 billion worldwide and played in thirteen countries and 115 cities. The musical was also nominated for nine Tony Awards and won for Best Costume Design. The production ran on Broadway for 5,461 performances between 1994 and 2007, becoming Broadway's eighth-longest-running production in history.

In 2017, a live-action film of Beauty and the Beast premiered. The film was directed by Bill Condon from a screenplay written by Stephen Chbosky and Evan Spiliotopoulos and co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Mandeville Films. The film was a reimagining of Disney's 1991 animated movie, but also included elements of the musical as well such as many new songs written by Alan Menken, but featured his musical classic, "Home," as an instrumental version throughout the film.

In 2010 he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Recent live concert appearances include the Hollywood Bowl, Segerstrom Center and the Royal Albert Hall.

Howard Ashman (Lyrics) is best known as a pivotal creative mind behind the renaissance of Disney animation and his work on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and The Beast (which is dedicated to, "Our friend, Howard Ashman, who gave a Mermaid her voice and a Beast his soul...") Ashman's first love was theater. He was a founder of off-off-Broadway's renowned WPA Theater, where he conceived, wrote and directed God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, as well as the classic musical, Little Shop of Horrors (both music by Alan Menken). In 1986, he wrote and directed the Broadway musical Smile (music by Marvin Hamlisch). Lamented as a lost treasure of the 1980's theater scene, Smile remains popular on High School and College campuses throughout the country. Howard Ashman died in 1991 from complications of AIDS. For more information, please visit howardashman.com.

Tim Rice (Lyrics) has worked in music, theater, and film since 1965, when he met Andrew Lloyd Webber, a fellow struggling songwriter. Rather than pursue Tim's ambitions to write rock or pop songs, they turned their attention to Andrew Lloyd Webber's obsession - musical theater. Their first collaboration, The Likes Of Us (lyrics by Tim, music by Andrew), was an unsuccessful show based on the life of Dr. Barnardo, the Victorian philanthropist. Their next three works together were much more successful: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita. Tim has also worked with other distinguished popular composers such as Elton John (The Lion King, Aida), Alan Menken (Aladdin, King David, Beauty and the Beast), Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson (Chess). He worked on From Here to Eternity with music by newcomer Stuart Brayson, coproduced with Lee Menzies, directed by Tamara Harvey and with book by Bill Oakes. It premiered in the West End at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2013. He formed his own cricket team in 1973 and was president of the MCC in 2002. In 2013, he wrote and presented a 52-part series for BBC Radio 2, American Pie, a trawl through the music and musicians of every American State.

The GOP Continues To Be Plagued With Racist Candidates. I Can't Imagine Why      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Whether on the air or here at DWT, whenever I want an example of the worst of the worst DCCC recruits for Congress, I invariably turn to south Jersey (NJ-02) and state Senator Jeff Van Drew. He has no saving grace... other than his ability to placate conservatives. That's because he is one himself. Next year, when he's in Congress, there will be virtually no crucial issues on which you will find Van Drew voting with the Democrats. And he will most certainly be in Congress next year.

NJ-02 is the very swingy district the DCCC has given away to Republican moderate Frank LoBiondo year after year, cycle after cycle. It has an R+1 PVI but voted for Obama both times he ran (with 53% each time) and went for Trump only because Hillary was such a bad candidate for white working class districts like this. It goes from the tip of the state at Cape May all the way up the coast, past Ocean City and Atlantic City to Little Egg Harbor and Long Beach Township and heads west through Millville to the Delaware River across from Wilmington and the exurbs south of Philly.

In a 4-person primary, Van Drew won with 55.41%, his closest opponent drawing just 19.16%. LoBiondo is retiring-- Van Drew wouldn't be running otherwise-- and the GOP narrowly selected Seth Grossman as its candidate, also in a 4-person race.
Seth Grossman- 10,101 (39.0%)
Hirsh Singh- 7,893 (30.5%)
Sam Fiocchi- 6,068 (23.4%)
Robert Turkavage- 1,839 (7.1%)
28,233 voters showed up for the Democratic primary, only 25,901 for the Republican primary. As of the May 15 FEC reporting deadline, Van Drew had raised $631,540 and had $412,156 cash-on-hand, compared to the $22,529 Grossman had raised, with just $10,810 cash-on-hand. As if that weren't a bad enough context for the GOP, the NRCC withdrew its support for Grossman Monday evening, after he exposed himself as a racist.

The offense was that-- on several occasions-- he didn't have the sense to hide his racism. He shared a post from a white supremacist website calling blacks a "threat to all who cross their paths." NRCC chair Steve Stivers: "Bigotry has no place in society-- let alone the U.S. House of Representatives... The NRCC withdraws our support of Seth Grossman and calls on him to reconsider his candidacy. The people of New Jersey's 2nd District deserve an inclusive Republican candidate who will be a trusted conservative voice in Congress." That's probably a mortal wound for a Republican candidate, especially when Republicans know that Van Drew will represent their points of view-- as he's been doing very well in the state Senate-- perfectly well. A Blue Dog extremist, Van Drew has virtually nothing to do with Democratic Party values or ideals.
Grossman's campaign said the candidate does not intend withdraw from the race and did not endorse what was said in the post.

Grossman, who won the June 5 Republican primary to succeed the retiring Rep. Frank LoBiondo, R-2nd-Dist, while promising to support President Donald Trump, earlier described diversity as "a bunch of crap and un-American."

The NRCC was silent on Grossman's earlier comments about diversity, which he made during a Republican debate. But Stivers reacted to a report by the liberal watchdog group Media Matters about Grossman linking to the article that ran on a white supremacist website.

Written by someone claiming to be  "public defender in a large southern metropolitan area," the post concluded: "Blacks are different by almost any measure to all other people. They cannot reason as well. They cannot communicate as well. They cannot control their impulses as well. They are a threat to all who cross their paths, black and non-black alike."

Media Matters said Grossman called attention to the article in a Dec. 29, 2014 Facebook post, commenting: "Oy vay! What so many people, black, white and Hispanic, whisper to me privately but never dare say out loud publicly. Back in the Old Country, people were very careful about what they said for fear of retaliation. At one time, America was a free country and people were not afraid to express their true thoughts. Am just posting this as an individual and not on behalf of any organization."
Grossman, an attorney, seems to think that screeching that he supports Trump is a defense. The real problem Stivers and his colleagues should be sealing with isn't only about Grossman though. They ought to be asking themselves what is it about Trump's GOP that keeps attacking Nazis and racists and what is it about the Trump base that keeps nominating them to represent the GOP in primaries all over the country. Hint: rhymes with dump, rump and thump.

Father and son Oregon ranchers Dwight and Steven Hammond left a federal prison in Long Beach, California free men at around 130pm Pacific Time Tuesday, six and half hours after a Presidential Pardon was announced. The White House announced a full pardon for the Hammonds, who were serving five year manadatory terrorism sentences for lighting a backfire to protect their land. President Trump's pardon of the ranchers was welcomed by Ammon Bundy, leader of the Oregon Standoff protest in early 2016, centered at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Bundy released a statement that saying in part: "I hope they find...
Hawaii: B&B Owner Loses LGBTQ Discrimination Case - Again      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

In 2007, Diane Cervelli and Taeko Bufford of Long Beach, California, traveled to the Aloha state to visit a friend who had just given birth.

The child apparently was having some health issues at the time, so the couple decided to seek accommodations nearby. The closest option was The Aloha Bed & Breakfast.

But when the couple called Phyllis Young, owner of The Aloha B&B in Honolulu’s Hawaii Kai area, Young told the couple same-sex relationships are "detestable" and “defile our land.

Hawaii’s public accommodation law specifically bans establishments that provide lodging to transient guests from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, race, color, ancestry, religion, disability and sex —including gender identity or expression.

Later that year, Cervilli and Bufford filed a complaint with Hawaii’s Civil Rights Commission.

Although Young asserted she had the right to discriminate since her business was in her home, the commission determined Young had openly discriminated against the couple.

Cervilli and Bufford consequently filed a lawsuit against Young in 2011.

In 2013, a Hawaii First Circuit Court judge ruled that Young had violated the state’s public accommodation laws and ordered her to stop discriminating.

Young appealed the decision and in February of this year, the Intermediate Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court ruling.

In a last ditch effort, the B&B owner asked the state’s Supreme Court to review the case. The high court declined to do so, and effectively affirming the lower court ruling that Young had discriminated.

Earlier this year, Bufford told QVoiceNews, “I can’t tell you how much it hurt to be essentially told, ‘we don’t do business with your kind.’ It still stings to this day.”

“We thought the days when business owners would say ‘We’re open to the public – but not to you’ was a thing of the past,” she added. “You don’t have to change your beliefs,” she said, “but you do have to follow the law just as everyone else does.”

Lambda Legal Senior Attorney Peter Renn hailed the decision saying in a statement

“In letting the existing decision stand, Hawai‘i today joined a long line of states across the country that understand how pernicious and damaging a religious license to discriminate would be.”

“In fact, since the U.S. Supreme Court’s narrow ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop in early June, three state courts – in Arizona, Oregon and now Hawai`i – have either ruled against or refused to review rulings against business owners who have claimed religious justifications to discriminate.”

Guerre commerciale: la Californie va souffrir si la crise dure      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
