RECORD TEMPERATURE READINGS THROUGHOUT LOS ANGELES CAUSED BY ‘FAULTY WEATHER STATIONS,’ METEOROLOGIST SAYS      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

RECORD TEMPERATURE READINGS THROUGHOUT LOS ANGELES CAUSED BY ‘FAULTY WEATHER STATIONS,’ METEOROLOGIST SAYS

Nearly every record-high temperature reported over the last few days in the Los Angeles area are from weather stations “compromised by heat sources and heat sinks,” according to a veteran meteorologist.
“In my opinion, the data from these stations is worthless,” California-based meteorologist Anthony Watts wrote on his blog Watts Up With That.
That’s not to say Los Angeles wasn’t scorching hot. Temperatures in much of greater Los Angeles were in the triple digits, according to the National Weather Service.
On the contrary, what Watts claims is that artificial heat sources and sinks produce localized heat around weather stations, adding the few degrees necessary to qualify as records. In general, cities are warmer than surrounding countryside owing to the urban heat island effect.

For example, downtown Los Angeles reported a daily record high temperature of 108 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday. Watts, however, noted the weather station was on top of a parking garage surrounded by vehicles. The weather station was relocated to the University of Southern California (USC) campus in 1999 where meteorologists said it would be less prone to extreme swings, but Watts said that station’s had problems in the past.
“The ASOS type station used at USC is notorious for producing false record highs where there aren’t any. For example, Honolulu and Tucson,” Watts wrote. “Look at all the service vehicles parked around it. One wonders recent record high that was claimed there is just another result of a vehicle being parked to close to it like the Ice Cream Truck debacle that denied a new all-time record high for Scotland a few days ago.”
U.K. meteorologists recently rejected a record-high temperature reading at Motherwell, Scotland, on June 28 because an ice cream truck had idled nearby with its engine on, possibly contaminating the reading.
Scotland’s record-high reading came amid what some are calling a global heat wave, which has produced record readings across the world. Some media outlets, including The Washington Post, tried to link the heat wave to man-made global warming.
“No single record, in isolation, can be attributed to global warming,” the Post reported, trying to link summer weather to global warming. “But collectively, these heat records are consistent with the kind of extremes we expect to see increase in a warming world.”
Record-high temperatures were also recorded at the Van Nuys Airport, the Burbank Airport and the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA). Watts took issue with all of these record readings. (RELATED: Africa’s Hottest Temperature Ever Recorded Was Probably ‘Influenced By Man-Made Objects’)
“It’s another ASOS station snuggled between an industrial park, runway, road, and taxiway,” Watts wrote of the Van Nuys Airport weather station, which recorded 117 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday.
As for the Burbank Airport, Watts wrote that “the weather station is virtually surrounded by asphalt runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking ramps,” which means the “likelihood for the station to get in the middle of a [400-degree] jetwash is almost a certainty, being so close to taxiways with turns.”
Airports, like cities, tend to run hotter than surrounding areas because of runways, jet wash from airplanes, vehicles exhaust and other non-natural factors that can artificially raise temperatures.
UCLA’s weather station recorded a record 111 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday. However, Watts pointed out the university’s thermometer is one the roof of a building, likely being hit with artificial heat.
“UCLA’s weather station is on the roof of the Math Sciences/Atmospheric Sciences building,” Watts wrote. “Why? there’s no place else to put it. There’s hardly a free and open space left.”
Update: This article has been updated to reflect that the downtown Los Angeles weather station that recorded high temperatures was at USC, not the Department of Water and Power.

MAN propulsion systems ordered for LNG-fueled Pasha Hawaii duo      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The ME-GI engine has won some 200 orders since its introduction to the market. Pictured here, the 9S90ME-GI type

JULY 10, 2018 — MAN Energy Solutions is to provide the propulsion systems for the two 2,525 TEU LNG -fueled Jones Act containerships on order at the Keppel AmFELS shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, for Pasha Hawaii.

Each ship will have a 7S80ME-GI Mk 9.5 main engine, three MAN 6L35/44DF GenSets and an MAN Alpha FPP propeller system.

Bjarne Foldager – Vice President, Sales & Promotion, Two-Stroke Business at MAN Energy Solutions – said: "With some 200 engines on order or already in service, the ME-GI's popularity continues to grow. This is yet another order within the container segment and cements the ME-GI concept. More so, the project at hand shows how our customers pick up on offers of complete propulsion systems beyond just the main engine. This confirms our strategic path to develop into a system provider."

Doosan Engine will build the main engines in Korea. They use an Exhaust Gas Recirculation system to meet Tier III emission standards. MAN Energy Solutions's Augsburg works will build the auxiliary engines, which will meet Tier III with the aid of a Selective Catalytic Reduction system.

Engine delivery is scheduled for 2019 with the two vessels, respectively, due for launch in the first and third quarters of 2020.

Honolulu based Pasha Hawaii says that the new vessels will have a sailing speed of 23.0 knots and that their hulls have been fully optimized using computational fluid dynamics to be among the most hydrodynamically efficient in the world.

The new vessels will operate fully on LNG from day one in service, dramatically reducing environmental impact and increasing fuel efficiency. Energy savings will also be achieved with the state-of-the-art engines and an underwater propulsion system with a high-efficiency rudder and propeller.

When compared to conventional fuels, LNG is a much cleaner alternative fuel for shipping and offers significant environmental benefits, including the reduction of up to 95% in sulfur oxides, nearly 100% of all particulate matter, up to 90% of nitrogen oxides, and up to 25% of carbon dioxide emissions from engine exhausts.

The ME-GI engine

Over 200 of MAN Energy Solutions's successful ME-GI (-Gas Injection) engine, have been ordered. The ME-GI engine provides ship-owners and operators with an environmentally friendly and high-efficiency, two-stroke technology, without methane slip.

With the ME-GI engine, two-stroke development has taken a step further by combining the unique properties of multi-fuel combustion and the well-known reliability of the ME-engine. The Diesel principle provides the ME-GI engine with high operational stability and efficiency, including during load changes and fuel change-over, while defining properties such as a stable change-over from fuel to gas with no fuel-penalties are maintained.

Comment on CC Road Trip: Cars of the Big Island of Hawaii by Chuck1122      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
I visited Hawaii in 1986. In Honolulu , I got a Mercury Cougar with 3/4 tank of gas. I had the car for less that half a day and had a dog fight with the girl behind the rental car counter for they wanted to charge me an inordinate amount for the refill. Finally, she relented and gave me a full credit. On the "Big Island" and Kaua'i (the garden island), I got a Nissan Sentra. Not sure if they still have this feature; but for a flat fee, you could visit another island for the day that included a round trip airline ticket and rental car for the day. Usually consisted of the first flight of the day to the neighboring island, pick up the rental car, spend time discovering the island, then return to catch the last flight back. Best memory was the black sand beach on the Big Island (stumbled upon this by accident) and also got to walk on top of the harden crust of a lava flow. Also saw the steam plum for the lava that was still flowing under the harden crust into the ocean. This was back in the day when you had a camera and Kodak film. Not sure were the picture are:-(

TheatreWorks Silicon Valley kicks off its 2018/19 season with Hold These Truths by Jeanne Sakata, an inspiring true story following Gordon Hirabayashi, a Japanese-American student who fought internment to a relocation camp during World War II. This Northern California premiere celebrates the human spirit as it chronicles Hirabayashi's journey from college in Seattle all the way to the Supreme Court, and eventually to a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Directed by Lisa Rothe, with Joel de la Fuente starring as Hirabayashi, Hold These Truths shares the story of a young man who passionately defends his Constitutional rights against an unexpected adversary: his own country. It will be presented July 11-August 5, 2018 (press opening: July 14) at the Lucie Stern Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Rd., Palo Alto. For tickets ($40-$100) and more information the public may visit TheatreWorks.org or call (650) 463-1960.

Hold These Truths made its world premiere in 2007 at East West Players in Los Angeles. In 2012, the solo play made its Off Broadway premiere at Epic Theatre Company starring Joel de la Fuente, and received a 2013 Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Solo Performance. Since its world premiere, it has gone on to play throughout the nation including theatres in Boston, Honolulu, Washington, D.C., Portland, and many others. Critics have lauded the period piece as "a top-notch production" (The New York Times), "particularly impactful" (TheaterMania), and a show which "gives hope that the arc of the moral universe does indeed eventually bend toward justice" (Los Angeles Times).

Joel de la Fuente makes his TheatreWorks debut as Gordon Hirabayashi. He has been seen in movies and on many television shows and such asThe Man in the High Castle, Madam Secretary, Hemlock Grove, Nurse Jackie, Hawaii 5-O, ER, Red Sparrow, The Adjustment Bureau, and more. De la Fuente has also performed throughout the United States at theatres including New York Shakespeare Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, The Public Theater, and others.

Spicy Jambalaya - 18 June 2018      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Teen slang from the South, and food words that are tricky to pronounce. High schoolers in Huntsville, Alabama, give Martha and Grant an earful about their slang -- including a term particular to their hometown. All we can say is: Don't be a "forf"! And: How do you pronounce the name of that tasty Louisiana specialty: Is it  JUM-buh-lye-yah or JAM-buh-lye-yah? And which syllable do you stress when pronouncing the spice spelled T-U-R-M-E-R-I-C? Finally, the word spelled W-A-T-E-R is of course pretty simple . . . so you might be surprised it can be pronounced at LEAST 15 different ways! Plus gnat flat, looking brave, vog, Russian mountains, high hat, whisker fatigue, chi hoo -- eh, fuggedaboudit!

FULL DETAILS

During a visit to Lee High School in Huntstville, Alabama, we collect a treasure trove of slang, including a term that seems to be particular to the Huntsville area: forf, which as a verb means to fail to follow through on commitments, and as a noun denotes the kind of person who does that, or in other words, a flake. Thanks to our friends at WLRH in Huntsville for inviting us.

Jared in Liberty, New York, wonders when and how the term Fuggedaboudit originated and how came to be popularly associated with the New York metropolitan area. The films of Martin Scorsese had a lot to do with that. The word doesn't always literally mean forget about it; it can also be used to mean No problem! or Certainly!

The Spanish term for rollercoaster, montana rusa, or "Russian mountain," refers to the earliest versions of rollercoasters, which were Russian slopes for sled built from wood and covered with ice. Oddly enough, the Russian for roller coaster translates as "American mountain."

Pearl, a youngster in Massachusetts, asks how to pronounce the name of the East Indian spice turmeric. The accent falls on the first syllable, and pronouncing that first r sound is optional.

Students at Lee High School in Huntstville, Alabama use the slang terms snack and whole meal. A snack is an attractive person, and if you're better than a snack, you're a whole meal!

"Rhyme and Time" is the name of this week's puzzle from Quiz Guy John Chaneski. All the answers are rhyming words separated by the word and. For example, what do you call the technique for narrowing the aspect ratio of a wide-screen movie so it will fit on your TV screen?

Peg in Papillion, Nebraska, has been reading Winston Graham's Poldark series, which is set in Cornwall around the turn of the 19th century. The characters sometimes greet each other with You're looking brave. Although brave usually means courageous, it's also been used to mean finely dressed or excellent. This sense also appears in the related Scots term brawf and as well as braw, all of which may derive from the Italian word bravo, meaning good or brave.

Aiya from Toronto, Canada, finds that whenever he moves to a new location, he adopts some of the local dialect, which feels a bit uncomfortable. At one point, for example, he found himself unable to recall if he used on accident or by accident to refer to something that happened accidentally. It's natural to pick up some of the lingo of those around you, so no need to overthink it. In the case of the phrases on accident versus and by accident, though, something very interesting is going on.

The housing shortage in crowded urban areas has led to ever smaller domiciles known as micro-units. Even smaller ones are sometimes called nano units or gnat flats.

Gary from Santa Maria, California, has been arguing with a friend for years over how to pronounce that tasty Louisiana mix of meat, vegetables, and rice called jambalaya.

Vog is the air pollution caused when sulphur dioxide and other volcanic gases react with oxygen. The word vog is a portmanteau of volcano and fog.

Martha reads the poem "Instructions on Not Giving Up" by the poet Ada Limon. Used with permission.

Rachel from San Diego wonders whether the exuberant Hawaiian cry Chi hoo! is onomatopoetic--that is, if the sound of the word resembles what it actually denotes. The cry is not originally Hawaiian. It's a version of the Samoan war cry known as a fa'aamu or sisu or ususu. The Honolulu Advertiser's Lee Cataluna has written about its use in Hawaii.

In South Africa, the word spookasem is a term for cotton candy, although it literally translates as ghost's breath. Elsewhere in the English-speaking word, the sweet stuff is called candy floss or fairy floss.

Cindy in Virginia Beach, Virginia, is going through her mother's diary from the 1930's and finds the term high hat used as a transitive verb. To high hat someone means to act in a supercilious,  condescending, affected manner, as if wearing a high hat. In a someone similar way today, the slang term to cap someone can mean to be boastful.

In the United States alone, there are 15 different pronunciations of the word water!

Cats' whiskers, or vibrissae, are exceedingly sensitive. If a cat seems reluctant to eat out of a particular bowl, she may be bothered by whisker fatigue.

This episode is hosted by Martha Barnette and Grant Barrett, and produced by Stefanie Levine.

Combining history, context, and culture, the Anaha tower is an extraordinary example of contemporary architectural place-making. The condominium begins the implementation of Ward Village®, which is largest Platinum Certified LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED-ND) masterplan in the country. Designed by Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB) in partnership with Honolulu-based Benjamin Woo Architects, Anaha is the second residential condominium tower to be completed within the award-winning 60-acre master-planned community transforming Honolulu’s urban core. Located in the vibrant Kaka’ako district of Oahu, the 40-story, 857,000-square-foot tower creates 311 condominium homes that will help transform the previously industrial and retail focused district into a 24-hour mixed use community. Anaha means “reflection of light” in Hawaiian. The tower’s undulating form was inspired by the island’s artistic tradition of abstracting waves. Through a sequence of shifted, interlocking, and soft… continue

Five Reasons why you should Choose a Norwegian Cruise Holiday      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

With activities for all ages and a diverse mix of destinations, cruising is the ideal platform to plan a multi-generational family getaway

by Shrutee K/DNS

Mumbai – With the freedom and flexibility to enjoy an unrivalled choice of dining, entertainment, accommodation and activity options for all ages, Norwegian Cruise Line is a firm favourite with families looking for new, unforgettable experiences. Norwegian Cruise Line has a range of family-friendly itineraries to choose from for your next holiday, including destinations in Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and more. If you’re looking for something closer to home, Norwegian Jewel’s forthcoming Asia Pacific sailing season is also not to be missed, providing an excellent opportunity to discover the local region with the whole family.

Returning to local waters fresh from a bow-to stern refurbishment in November, Norwegian Jewel’s 7-Day South East Asia round trip, departing from Singapore on 5 November 2018, is perfect for first time cruisers looking to find their sea legs in beautiful local waters. Or, for those looking for a more far flung adventure, Norwegian Jewel’s 13-Day South Pacific sailing from Sydney, departing on 5 January 2019 and taking in the sights of Noumea, the Isle of Pines, Cairns and Airlie Beach is just the cruise for you.

Looking to travel a little further afield this Christmas? Why not take in the breathtaking sights of Hawaii from on board Pride of America, the only cruise ship that sails round-trip from Honolulu year-round. With Norwegian’s unique 7-day Hawaii itineraries, you can stay overnight in both Maui and Kauai as well as visiting Oahu and the Big Island of Hawaii.

Why should travellers choose Norwegian for their next multigenerational cruise? Here are our top five reasons:

Awesome Accommodation
Experience first-hand why Norwegian Cruise Line won the ‘Best Suites’ award at the Cruise Critic® Australia Editors’ Picks Awards for 2017. Each Norwegian Cruise Line ship offers a wide range of spacious staterooms and configurations to suit different family groups, including interior, ocean-view and balcony staterooms. For larger groups there are also mini-suites, multi-room suites and interconnecting staterooms or studio cabins for solo travellers. The Haven by Norwegian®, an exclusive sanctuary accessible by private keycard, is ideal for multi-generational groups looking to travel in style and is available on a range of Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

Award-winning entertainment
From a family fond of mini-golf to dance classes, water slides, race tracks and laser tag, there is no shortage of action on board Norwegian Cruise Line. Renowned for delivering some of the best, award-winning entertainment at sea, guests can choose from famed Broadway productions and musicals, acrobatic and circus shows through to comedy performances.

Delectable Dining
Let your inner foodie out with Norwegian Cruise Line’s renowned ‘freestyle’ dining concept, where guests can eat wherever they want, whenever they want - choosing from up to 27 dining options, including Japanese, Italian, Texas steakhouses and more. Kids under three always eat free, with those aged 4 to 12 able to order from complimentary kids’ menus at speciality dining restaurants – making family meal times delicious and affordable.

A Club for All Ages and Babysitting Services
An enduring favourite with kids and parents, the on-board Splash Academy is a complimentary program for kids aged from 6 months to 12 years, with children divided into age-based activity groups supervised by trained staff.

Teenagers, often the trickiest group to entertain, will love the cool hang out lounge, Entourage, and the option to join other teens to watch a film, shoot hoops high above the sea, play video games, tackle a rock climbing wall, race their mates on multi-level waterslides and dance to the latest tunes under the stars at the White Hot Party.

Parents and Grandparents can take advantage of group babysitting services for those aged 3 to 12, or the specialised ‘nursery at sea’ service for little ones between six months and two-years-old.

Family-friendly Shore Excursions
From an unforgettable family experience such as dog sledding in Alaska, to being immersed in the crisp blue waters of the Isle of Pines in New Caledonia, there are plenty of options to create on-shore memories for the entire family, whatever your Norwegian Cruise Line itinerary.

Explore the beauty of Australia and New Zealand on board Norwegian Jewel, with family friendly shore excursions including snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef, wading near the waterfalls of New Zealand’s South Island or visiting The Hobbiton movie set in the North Island.

Making it even more enticing to plan your next multi-generational holiday on board Norwegian, book now and take advantage of a range of flexible Free at Sea offers including a free beverage package, specialty dining and more!

HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii Public Charter School Commission has revoked a charter contract for a Big Island school after finding nearly two dozen violations. The commission revoked the charter contract Monday for Ka'u Learning Academy for violations that included financial and operational irregularities, enrollment discrepancies, and failure to properly maintain student and employee records. The Naalehu school opened in 2015, serving third- through seventh-grade students. It expected to have more than 90 students enrolled next school year. The school will be shut down immediately, but it has 21 days to appeal to the state Board of Education.

More on Ariana's Experience at Auction Napa Valley 2018!      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

"I drove up to St. Helena early on Friday morning and was able to attend the Napa Valley Barrel Auction. It was held at Charles Krug winery which was very beautiful, but the tone of the event was very light, fun, and more casual compared to the festivities for the next day. Inside the venue they had all the barrels lined up in alphabetical order and the bidders all bid using a wine auction app. It was very high tech and they had many tv's so you could view the bidding via the app on the screens around the area.

The second day was the day of the big event and when I arrived I learned the format of how the evening would go. Each somm had a specific section of the tent that they were assigned to. That included speaking with the vinters, opening the magnums that the vinters had brought and conducting service for that table. I was nervous because my section started with Harlan and Bond tables, but I spoke to the vinters and representatives and they were very easy going and welcoming. I then had to be flexible though because one of the volunteer sommeliers was a no show, so the sommelier leader had me fill in for his section. At this point, nerves had dissipated so it was really easy to just move along to wherever anyone needed help.

After the auction everyone began moving outside for the dinner portion which was a sit down dinner at sunset. A few other somms and I started opening bottles to get everything ready to get put down on the tables before hand to serve. I don't think I've ever opened up so many sparkling bottles in one standing in my life. My palm was hating me and I think my hand was going to fall off. But it was still very fun to talk to the other somms about what kinds of wines they like to pour and pair. I really enjoyed meeting all the somms that were there and we all exchanged emails and hopefully will stay in touch. I met somms from Boston, Iowa and even a somm that just moved to Napa that same day! Very exciting!"

Out in the Field: The Napa Valley Wine Auction      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

We always encourage our team to be students of the game and to take every opportunity they can to learn in all environments. Our Sommelier Ariana Tsuchiya was invited to assist at the prestigious Napa Valley Wine Auction, and here is her experience out in the field!

Describe your experience at the Napa Valley Wine Auction in three words.

    Nervousness, Gaiety, Uplifting

What is the biggest lesson you learned?

I learned that even if you are out of your comfort zone, in a new situation in a completely different location with people you have never met before, you can still count on your past training and muscle memory to rise to the occasion. I was really nervous to be out of my element and pouring magnum bottles, but I tackled the obstacle just as if I were on the floor during service back home in Honolulu. I also knew that even if I wasn't surrounded by people I knew, I could channel my support system back home in Hawaii and try to make them proud.

    What is your favorite memory?

My favorite memory would be at the end of the night when all the work was done, all of the volunteer somms gathered around to toast our glasses. I met so many amazing sommeliers from around the nation that are equally as passionate about wine as I am. It made me happy to know that we are all here to help a good cause and to better ourselves and our craft.

If you had the opportunity to return next year, what would you do differently?

If I had the opportunity to return next year, I wouldn't waste time being nervous or anxious because everyone is there to support a great cause and have a good time.

There are even more exciting adventures ahead for Ariana as she heads to SommCon next month. More from her soon!

Reflections from Our Trip to Hilo      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

An Excerpt from Melanie Inouye, chef de partie at Alan Wong’s Honolulu:

"I really enjoyed the trip, from the second we all got into the car heading to the airport; Chef & Leigh were both very willing to answer any questions we had.

Everyone we met was so knowledgeable & eager to talk to us during the event. It was exciting to even see one of my friends that I made back when I was a freshman at UH Hilo & see what he’s doing now. I had no idea that he was studying anthropology. But even talking to him, he was so passionate about the bees.

One of my favorite stories Chef told us was probably the one about how he got inspired from Chef’s Garden (Veggie Institute) in Ohio, because he saw one of their own Adopt a Beehive programs. I like how inspired he was to want to make an effort to create his own program that would help Hawaii in so many ways. It shows how productive Chef is in keeping the Hawaii Regional Cuisine alive. We wouldn’t be able to “taste Hawaii” if it wasn’t for the bees themselves.

With that small inspiration, Chef let it grow into something so great, something that could help all of Hawaii. I hope that one day I can do something like that also.”

An Excerpt from Melanie Maier, chef de partie at Alan Wong’s Honolulu:

“This was a once in a lifetime trip and experience. Starting from the day before, menu development preparations to the very last minute of that day. It was a great experience to be able to talk to Chef Alan and ask questions about anything regarding bees, as well as beyond.  It was really a lot of fun talking to Chef and I think we found ourselves laughing most of the time throughout this trip.

Going out into the hives, taking the hive apart, while Brandon was explaining about the Bee’s and answering our questions was really cool. The suits were so funny and we were laughing so much throughout the trip. Being able to touch the hives and find the queen was amazing as well. I had no idea how many eggs a queen could lay and that the queen only mates once in her lifetime. I guess it is pretty efficient and overcoming our fear of bees was super fun as well.

It is difficult to say what was the highlight of this trip, because honestly every moment was a highlight and it would be very difficult to write everything that happened and we learned in a single paragraph. I think it hit all of us towards the end of the day and we were so grateful of everything we could experience.”

An Excerpt from Jen Tran, Captain, The Pineapple Room:

"The Adopt a Beehive function was a great learning experience. Being with the company for nearly 6 years, I’ve got to learn a lot about local farmers, the importance of supporting local businesses, and much more as well as being involved.  It is a great pleasure to come along with Chef Alan and meet Lorna and the bees. Going to the Big Island gave me a better understanding of what we are taught during pre-service, because learning and hearing it is one thing and being able to interact with the farmers and having a hands on experiences is something even better!

When I was younger I use to grow up seeing a lot of bees, and now when you walk by a garden you’ll rarely close to never see any. Bees are important because they pollinate 99% of plants and we need them to do so, because animals eat plants. When we first landed, we were taken to Ken’s Pancake house. Sitting at the booth in front of us were syrups. Syrups are artificial and processed. Then Chef said “Why not honey?”, because compared to syrup honey is all natural, it also doesn’t spoil. As long as you keep it covered and out of moisture you can always reheat the honey and it’ll be good again.

At University Hilo Laboratory Farm we’re educated about local food production and the need to reduce Hawaii dependency on imported good and the issues of threatening honey bees’ role in sustainable agriculture. The importance of sustainability is so we can share what we have today with our children’s children. I hope others get to experience what an amazing learning experience this was for me, because it gave me a different perspective of the farmers and how passionate and knowledgeable they are is truly inspiring."

China Blog - Never Stop Learning      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Never would I have thought that I would ever travel to China. It was always on my list of places to visit, but not at the top. Going to see the Great Wall of China was on my bucket list but never would I have imagined ever being able to go. I am grateful for the opportunity of being able to go and see with my own eyes and learn about food and culture. Learning about culture was evident on this trip through history and through food. Different cultures can share the same values, the same beliefs, the same thoughts. And it was knowing that in the vastness of the world, people can share many similarities. This trip was unforgettable, especially the relationships that were made along the way.

Thank you to Randy King and his Seawind Travel group, they did an excellent job of arranging all the moving parts. And thank you to the tour guides who shared their vast knowledge of history and religion with us. Thank you also to the crew at Crystal Cruises Crystal Symphony who were more than hospitable arranging for the different events and accommodating to not only us, but every guests' needs. Thank you to Executive Chef Peter Denger along with his kitchen staff in the galley for allowing us into their kitchens, showing us around their facilities and helping us to locate whatever we needed. They run a tight ship and it was a great experience to learn aboard the ship. Never stop learning wherever you go. Pictures and words won’t do the trip or the relationships that were made justice.

Toyota Luncurkan Aplikasi Berbagi Mobil, Seperti Ini Cara Kerjanya      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Hawaii: B&B Owner Loses LGBTQ Discrimination Case - Again      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

In 2007, Diane Cervelli and Taeko Bufford of Long Beach, California, traveled to the Aloha state to visit a friend who had just given birth.

The child apparently was having some health issues at the time, so the couple decided to seek accommodations nearby. The closest option was The Aloha Bed & Breakfast.

But when the couple called Phyllis Young, owner of The Aloha B&B in Honolulu’s Hawaii Kai area, Young told the couple same-sex relationships are "detestable" and “defile our land.

Hawaii’s public accommodation law specifically bans establishments that provide lodging to transient guests from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation, race, color, ancestry, religion, disability and sex —including gender identity or expression.

Later that year, Cervilli and Bufford filed a complaint with Hawaii’s Civil Rights Commission.

Although Young asserted she had the right to discriminate since her business was in her home, the commission determined Young had openly discriminated against the couple.

Cervilli and Bufford consequently filed a lawsuit against Young in 2011.

In 2013, a Hawaii First Circuit Court judge ruled that Young had violated the state’s public accommodation laws and ordered her to stop discriminating.

Young appealed the decision and in February of this year, the Intermediate Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court ruling.

In a last ditch effort, the B&B owner asked the state’s Supreme Court to review the case. The high court declined to do so, and effectively affirming the lower court ruling that Young had discriminated.

Earlier this year, Bufford told QVoiceNews, “I can’t tell you how much it hurt to be essentially told, ‘we don’t do business with your kind.’ It still stings to this day.”

“We thought the days when business owners would say ‘We’re open to the public – but not to you’ was a thing of the past,” she added. “You don’t have to change your beliefs,” she said, “but you do have to follow the law just as everyone else does.”

Lambda Legal Senior Attorney Peter Renn hailed the decision saying in a statement

“In letting the existing decision stand, Hawai‘i today joined a long line of states across the country that understand how pernicious and damaging a religious license to discriminate would be.”

“In fact, since the U.S. Supreme Court’s narrow ruling in Masterpiece Cakeshop in early June, three state courts – in Arizona, Oregon and now Hawai`i – have either ruled against or refused to review rulings against business owners who have claimed religious justifications to discriminate.”
