MTOTO WA MIAKA MIWILI AJIUA KWA KUJIPIGA RISASI      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Christopher Williams Jr na baba yake
Christopher Williams Jr.

Kufikia sasa, bado haijabainika iwapo wazazi wake watashtakiwa.

Surveillance video shows jewelry store owner being assaulted, robbed      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
released surveillance video shows the terrifying moments Muhammad Attique was attacked and robbed at gunpoint. The owner of KH Jewelers on Ashlan and Marks says he was, "Just getting to work. I had just barely opened the front door and this guy put a gun on me." Attique was forced to turn on the lights, disarm the alarm and open the safe before he was beaten, forced to the ground then zip tied. In addition to yelling racial slurs at Attique, one of the men came back to literally kick him while he was down. Attique says they did make one mistake, "one of them got mad because the other one called him by his name, Jerry." Muhammad says at one point he did consider fighting back but instantly thought of his wife and two children ages 5 and 3. He adds his family often visits him at work. Fresno Police say though the assailants are wearing masks, they're confident someone who sees this video will know who was involved. Lt. Mark Hudson says they were wearing "distinctive clothing. They're wearing long shirts, one of them has a star on his shirt. They're both wearing cowboy hats and full-length masks and gloves." He adds Attique did the right thing by not trying to fight his assailants. He warns people, should they ever find themselves in that situation, to do the same. The gunmen took off with two backpacks filled with jewelry and Muhammad's car which was recovered nearby. As for what was taken, Muhammad says for now he can't bring himself to go back in the safe to check. {{file|t=sV32z_1531273261}}

Thieves Steal $30K Of Apple Products In Daring Flash Robbery      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

A quick-witted group of thieves made off with nearly $30,000 in brand new Apple products during a rapid-fire robbery at an Apple Store in Fresno, Calif. over the weekend. The stunning surveillance footage shows the group of four hoodie-wearing young men run around the store, ripping the products from their tethers, before evading a group of bystanders and making a swift exit. According to witnesses, the group didn't display any weapons.

All told, the thieves, who were in the store for a few seconds, took 26 items worth some $27,000. Now, police are looking for five young black men between the ages of 16 and 18 (police believe the crew had a getaway driver).

According to ABC 7, police are also trying to figure out if the robbery is linked to a similar incident at an Apple Store in downtown San Luis Obispo last month.

"There are other reports, of other places, other cities in California that have had these kinds of takeover thefts," said Lt. Hudson. "So we are looking into (this crime) being connected to other crimes, at any other Apple Stores outside of Fresno."

As the surveillance shows, after grabbing up armfuls of gadgets, the thieves scurried past a group of frightened teenage girls and made sprinted away.

"One customer stood by the door to prevent them from leaving but was knocked out of the way," said Lt. Hudson. "Right now we are looking for four, or five, we believe there was a getaway driver, black males anywhere from 16 to 18 years old."

Lt. Mark Hudson of the Fresno PD told ABC that the thieves took "various iPhones, the iPhone 6, iPhone 7 and 8, and even the new iPhone X was taken in this grand theft."

Depuis 2016, Apple retire petit à petit les câbles antivol qui attachent ses appareils aux tables des boutiques.           The Hurry Up: Five-Star Running Back Kendall Milton, Four-Star Wide Receiver Rakim Jarrett Include Ohio State Among Top Schools      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The Hurry Up is your nightly dose of updates from the Ohio State football recruiting trail, keeping tabs on the latest from commits and targets from around the country.

BEST BACK IN THE COUNTRY

Clovis, California, Buchanan five-star running back Kendall Milton included Ohio State in his Top 10 on Monday afternoon alongside Alabama, Fresno State, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Oklahoma, Penn State, Texas and USC.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Milton is considered the second-best running back and No. 10 prospect overall in the Class of 2020, as he racked up 1,514 all-purpose yards and 25 total touchdowns for the Bears last season.

Though he’s never been to campus in a recruiting capacity, Milton has grown close to running backs coach Tony Alford in the six months since the Buckeyes extended a scholarship offer. The two briefly caught up when Alford was in California during the Spring Evaluation Period.

“They’ve let me know that I am their top running back prospect and that is something that means a lot to me,” Milton told Eleven Warriors.

Not only that, but Milton is also being heavily recruited by the Ohio State commits in his class. They’ve gotten to know him throughout the process — particularly Arizona four-star quarterback Jack Miller III — and all five reached out on Twitter after he announced his top schools.

Milton actually participated in a wrestling tournament in Columbus when he was in middle school and actually had a date picked out for a return visit this summer, but was forced to change those plans because of college football’s recruiting dead period. He hopes to make it back for a game this fall instead.

LARRY JOHNSON HOLDS THE TRUMP CARD

Concord, North Carolina, Cox Mill three-star defensive end Terrell Dawkins listed Ohio State in his Top 5 on Monday afternoon alongside Florida, North Carolina State, Notre Dame and Tennessee.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Dawkins is considered the 58th-best strong-side defensive end and No. 869 prospect overall in the Class of 2019, as he recorded 59 tackles, nine sacks, five tackles for a loss and an interception for the Chargers last season. He’s also a track standout who runs the 100-meter dash and throws the discus.

Dawkins has been to campus twice, as he attended the Spring Game in April — during which you may recall he was decked out in a vintage Charles Barkley windbreaker and Jeff Gordon “Rainbow Warrior” T-shirt — and a one-day camp in June. He spent time at the Buckeyes’ job fair and worked directly with defensive line coach Larry Johnson during his most recent visit.

“I really got to see how he coaches and all the stuff he talked about is really beneficial for me,” Dawkins told Eleven Warriors. “I like everything about him, he’s a pretty good coach. I learned a lot of new things from him today. Working with him has really got me better and thinking about it.”

Dawkins isn’t a fan of the recruiting scene and plans to take just one official visit this fall. None of his top schools have emerged as the favorite, which means the Buckeyes sit in an excellent spot to land his pledge if they miss out on Olentangy Orange five-star defensive end Zach Harrison — or rather, opt to take three players at the position this cycle.

“Ohio State has always been a great school to me. I always looked up to them and wished I could get an offer from them. It was pretty big for me,” Dawkins said. “Communication and the connection with the coaches and how everything is overall [will be the deciding factor].”

THE NEXT JEFFREY OKUDAH?

Cedar Hill, Texas, Trinity Christian five-star cornerback Dwight McGlothern Jr. included Ohio State in his Top 13 on Sunday night alongside Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU and USC.

“Ohio State is a great school with academics and sports-wise,” McGlothern told Eleven Warriors. “I like this recruiting class so far. It’s going to be very good for Ohio State. Coach Meyer is a great dude and knows how to win.”

The 6-foot-2, 173-pound McGlothern is considered the third-best cornerback and No. 28 prospect overall in the Class of 2020, as he recorded 43 tackles, 10 pass break ups, six tackles for a loss, four interceptions and one forced fumble and was named first-team all-district at New Caney last fall. He transferred schools back in January.

The Buckeyes offered McGlothern last summer and he talked with former assistant coordinator Kerry Coombs regularly until he left to take a job with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans in January. He’s still looking forward to his first trip to campus and building a bond with new cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson.

BOOM COMING SOON

Last but not least, Washington D.C. St. John’s College four-star wide receiver Rakim Jarrett listed Ohio State in his Final 4 on Sunday evening alongside Alabama, Florida State and Penn State.

The 6-foot, 182-pound Jarrett is considered the ninth-best wide receiver and No. 45 prospect overall in the Class of 2020, as he hauled in 43 receptions for 513 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Cadets to their first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference championship last fall. He picked up his offer from defensive line coach/area recruiter Larry Johnson last week, but has since been in contact with wide receivers coach Zach Smith.

“He was excited about me and can’t wait to get me up on campus,” Jarrett told Eleven Warriors. “[He thinks] I’ll fall in love with the place.”

It will be a quick turnaround for Jarrett, as he’ll also visit campus for the first time in a recruiting capacity alongside his teammates, five-star linebacker Mekhail Sherman and four-star defensive tackle Tre Williams, on the weekend of July 27-29. He has family in the area, so he’s at least driven by Ohio Stadium before.

“[I’m looking forward to seeing] the academics, such as how good the business school is; how the coaches would utilize me in the offense and where do they see me; my comfort level with the coaches; and how the team is, just seeing how they interact and seeing if it really is a great brotherhood,” Jarrett said.

With that that, Jarrett admits he’s closing in on his college decision. He wants to take at least one more visit before an announcement, though.

“I would love to do it before August, but its highly unlikely because I haven’t gotten to see Florida State yet,” Jarrett said. “But I wouldn’t count anything out after I visit Columbus.”

Protesting Trump's Immigration Policy Through Song       Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

In the long-running and contentious debate over immigration in this century, nothing has struck a public nerve in the United States like the news that children were being forcibly separated from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border by order of a policy implemented by the Trump administration earlier this year.

Social media and opinion polls screamed condemnation and sparked existential questions about national character, while hundreds of protests took place around the country days before the United States celebrated its independence.

It didn't take long before politically engaged musicians were speaking up about the policy in both words and song.

Strongly worded statements about the plight of Central American immigrants at the border came from the mainstream, from Bruce Springsteen to country singer Willie Nelson, rapper Common, and Puerto Rico's Luis Fonsi and Ricky Martin, among many others. They joined the many Latinx musicians who have been challenging Trump's approach to immigration and immigrants ever since the real estate mogul was a candidate in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Earlier this month, Guatemalan musician Gaby Moreno lent her voice to the movement. Her shows in the United States are usually packed with fellow chapinos, many of whom made the same arduous journey across the border that is central to the current debate.

Moreno's upcoming album is a collaboration with iconic music producer and arranger Van Dyke Parks. The pair released the single "The Immigrants" on the Fourth of July to condemn the family separation policy, as well as what they call inhumane conditions in the detention centers. (Proceeds from the sale of the track and streaming from the video will go to Central American Resource Center of California [CARECEN], a nonprofit organization devoted to empowering Central Americans and all immigrants by defending their human and civil rights.)

The song has a curious background: Written in 1998 by calypso performer David Rudder, it was penned in reaction to the infamous police beating of Haitian immigrant Abner Louima in New York City. Moreno adapted some of the lyrics to reflect the more recent wave of immigrants from Central America.

Another way to join the chorus of protest is to, well, actually play for a protest.

On a balmy late June afternoon, D.C.-based mariachi band Los Gallos Negros sang an impassioned chorus called "Migra" in front of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., during a rally against what was President Donald Trump's policy of separating the children of asylum seekers from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border; the organizers had asked the band to start the rally with a song. Bandleader Daniel Herrera says playing music for events like this is a deeply personal statement for all of its members.

"All of us are children of immigrants, and this issue hits us very hard in a very guttural and emotional way," says Herrera. "So we wanted to be able to contribute any little piece of art that we have to this mosaic of social justice."

One of the facilities being used to temporarily — and separately — house parents and children sits in Tornillo, Texas, between between Interstate 10 and the Mexican border, about 35 miles east of El Paso. Tornillo is also home to the Sonic Ranch, a five-studio residential recording complex that sits among 40 acres of pecan trees. It is a favorite of many Texas musicians, including David Garza, who was at the Sonic Ranch working on some recordings when a spontaneous demonstration at the holding facility quickly became part of the national dialogue. Garza says he grabbed a guitar and headed out to join the folks protesting.

"I was strangely the only musician out there with all the other people," Garza says. "There were hundreds of people, eventually thousands of people, and one guitar. It was an honor to represent music like that."

Garza says his march playlist included "movement" songs from the 1970s fight for Chicano civil rights in the southwest.

"People wanted to hear everything, from the classics 'No Nos Moveran' and 'De Colores' — which is from the Cesar Chavez days of the '70s — to Tom Petty's 'I Won't Back Down' and 'Yo Soy Chicano,' another great '70s-era fight song," Garza says. "People just wanted to hear songs that make them feel like they are part of the fight."

After that experience, David Garza was moved to record a song right on the border, featuring vocalist Paulina Reza of The Chamanas. In the video, Garza and Reza stand back to back on the border, with Garza in the United States and Reza on the Mexican side. The decades-old song, "Bésame Mucho," is one of the most iconic romance boleros to come out of Mexico, yet the lyrics of the chorus take on a haunting new meaning in the context of family separation:

Kiss me, kiss me many times

As if this were our last night together

Kiss me, kiss me many times

Because I am afraid to love you and then lose you

In 1948, folk singer Woody Guthrie directly addressed the Mexican immigrant experience in a song about a plane crash in Central California that killed 28 migrant farm workers who were being deported back to Mexico. While the American pilots and flight attendants who also died were identified by name in media reports of the crash, the Mexican nationals were just referred to as "deportees." (In February 2017, Alt.Latino dedicated an episode of our show to the story of those lost names and their eventual recovery by a Fresno author after years of research.)

There have been many other non-Latinx artists besides Guthrie who have long devoted their music to the plight of immigrants from Latin America and the struggles they endure — Nashville-based country songwriter Radney Foster is one.

Originally from Del Rio, Texas, near the border, Foster says that growing up there sensitized him to his Mexican neighbors.

"We're not Latinos," Foster says, "but after four generations on the border, my father was adamant that every one of his children learn to speak Spanish, because he believed you couldn't make a living there if you didn't."

In 1999, Foster wrote "Godspeed (Sweet Dreams)" for his son after they were separated by a custody dispute, with lyrics inspired by the children's book Goodnight Moon. He says the family separation policy moved him to revisit the song and release a new version, titled "Godspeed (Dulces Sueños)."

"The whole situation — from a personal level, from a level of faith, from a level of humanness — everything about that seemed just wrong," Foster says. "And I feel that if we don't speak up, no one will.

"I got the Spanish as far as I could; then I called my first high school girlfriend, Déborah Hernandez," he says. "She and I collaborated on really getting the Spanish right, and we really concentrated on making the lyrics about making an open-air dangerous journey with a small child."

Foster's new lyrics are written from the perspective of someone who risks everything in the hopes of finding safe haven on this side of the border. Its second verse, originally about reading children books before bed, are now reimagined for a family in transit: "No tenemos libros en este viaje / Pero puedo cantar." ("We don't have books on this trip / But I can sing.") Proceeds from the song are being directed to the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, a nonprofit organization in Texas that provides legal representation for undocumented immigrants.

The situation on the border resonates with guitarist and composer Marc Ribot personally.

"I'm Jewish. Every year at Passover, we would pray," he says. We would remind ourselves: 'You must know the heart of the stranger, for you were a stranger once yourself in the land of Egypt.' "

Ribot is also no stranger to musical resistance, or to repurposing classic songs for a more current political context. Ribot's upcoming album, Songs of Resistance 1942 - 2018,is a musical reaction to the current political climate — not just in the United States, but around the world.

"We understood that to mean that you have to show compassion to immigrants," he continues. "People that my grandmother and grandfather knew died because other countries wouldn't accept them. That is within living human memory. So what's going on at the border touched me personally and deeply."

Songs of Resistance includes a cover of "Rata de Dos Patas," or "A Rat with Two Feet," a song made popular by the Mexican vocalist Paquita la del Barrio, a ranchera singer known for taking Mexico's sexist culture of machismo to task with biting lyrics. In his interpretation, Ribot directs the song's strong name-calling — of "rata inmunda" ("filthy rodent"), "animal rastrero" (despicable animal) "escoria de la vida" ("scum of humanity"), "adefesio mal hecho" (deformed monstrosity), among many others — at President Trump.

"I thought it would make a very relevant political statement," Ribot says.

The Washington, D.C., band Elena Y Los Fulanos recorded the song "Amor Migrante" four years ago, telling the story of a mother who has left her home country in search of a better life for her child, even though she has had to leave her child behind. The theme of a mother's separation from her child resonates even louder now. The video for the song features a real undocumented mother who hasn't seen her son in 12 years.

"We want to tell the current administration to stop ignoring their direct role in creating this situation," Gaby Moreno says. "They're focusing instead on the cruel [behavior] of immigrants, on border security. But people are fleeing their countries because of social inequality, from gang violence, from ineffective justice systems. So we're here to tell people it just needs to stop. I just want [immigrants] to be received with more love and empathy."

Comment on The Life-Changing Magic of Learning to Spin Yarn by Anonymous      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
It was the Late '80s and a dear friend I met through showing and raising dairy goats kept saying you need to learn to spin. With two teenagers and a show/production herd of Nubians my stock answer was "in my next life." Little did I know my next life was right around the corner. Another goat friend and I took lessons from a gal who raised Jacobs in the foothills of Fresno county. And I began by spinning mooring for boats. Now years later I can spin a respectable single and learned volumes about our craft from joining the original "Sheep Thrills" online Yahoo! Group. Spinning is my happy place , my cheap therapy and gives me many an opportunity to say "do you spin? No? I can enable you."

Report: The High Cost of Hot      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Research Report by Climate Central

Download report PDF

As additional carbon pollution continues to trap more and more heat in the atmosphere, the higher temperatures that result can come with a hefty price tag. Some of those costs hit our wallets in the form of higher energy bills from greater use of air conditioning. Warmer temperatures can also have major health impacts, increasing our vulnerabilities to allergies, asthma, heat stroke and even death. To better understand how this is impacting local communities, Climate Central analyzed trends in cooling degree days and minimum temperatures. Of the 244 cities analyzed, 93 percent had an increase in cooling degree days. Much of this warming occurs at night, demonstrated by the fact that of those same cities, 87 percent see an increase in the occurrence of overnight low temperatures above a threshold of either 55°F or 65°F.

Warm Nights

According to the National Sleep Foundation, the optimal temperature for sleeping is around 65°F. Unfortunately, daily minimum temperatures, which most often occur at night when our bodies rest and recover, have been increasing as a result of climate change. And in many places, those minimums have been increasing at a faster rate than the average temperature. The jump in overnight lows is driving much of the overall temperature increase in the United States. According to calculations by NOAA/NCEI, the rate of warming for overnight temperatures since 1900 is more than 20 percent higher than the daytime rate.

Climate Central analyzed the trend in nights above 65°F for cities across the country. For a smaller set of cities that rarely experience nights above 65°F, we dropped that temperature to 55°F for this analysis. Overall, our analysis found that 87 percent of U.S. cities are experiencing more warm nights since 1970. El Paso, Las Cruces, and Fresno all see an increase of more than 50 nights over 65°F, while San Francisco had the biggest increase of 80 nights over 55°F.

Urban Heat Islands

Because surfaces like streets and buildings absorb the sun’s heat more readily than do trees and grasses, cities typically become “urban heat islands”. Researchers have estimated that the urban heat island effect can increase overnight temperatures in cities by as much as 22°F. And while the temperature on the thermometer in rural areas may not be quite as high as the cities, the long-term trend is the same — temperatures are rising. So cities alone are not driving the overall rising temperatures nationally and globally.

Adding vegetation in cities can help lessen the heat island effect. Researchers estimate that shaded surfaces can be a remarkable 20–45°F cooler than the peak temperatures of unshaded materials— which means lower air-conditioning costs and relief for those working in the heat. However, a recent analysis found that many urban areas in multiple states are losing tree cover, sometimes dramatically so.  For example, between 2009 and 2014, Rhode Island and Georgia respectively lost 44 and 40 percent of their urban and community tree cover.

Cooling Degree Days

The concept of cooling degree days (CDD), and their counterpart heating degree days (HDD), are primarily used to estimate the amount of artificial cooling or heating needed to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.

In fact, degree days aren't actually days at all. They represent the number of degrees the daily average temperature is above or below 65°F. In this report, we are focusing on heat and the corresponding cooling degree days, which follow this equation:

It’s important to note, an increase in the number of cooling degree days is a result of an increase in the number of days above 65°F, an increase in the number of degrees above 65°F, or both.

Climate Central analyzed 244 cities in the U.S. and determined that 93 percent have seen an increase in CDDs. Traditionally hot cities have seen the highest rise in CDDs. The largest increases are in McAllen, Texas, Phoenix and Las Vegas. However, many cooler cities that in the 1970s did not need widespread air conditioning are experiencing a large percentage increase in the past 10 years. For example, the number of CDDs in San Francisco and Portland, OR have almost doubled during the analysis period.

Trend in cooling degree days in these U.S. cities

As temperatures continue to climb, so will the cost of associated electricity bills and the demand for air conditioning our homes and places of business increases.  Air conditioning is already the largest share of residential electricity use (17 percent), according to the Energy Information Administration. In 2015, Americans spent over $27 billion cooling their homes.

A state-by-state-roster of partners is available on the EPA's website

Households in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana have the highest air conditioning use per household — almost six times more than in New England. The average annual cost for homes across the U.S. with air conditioning is approximately $250. In the high use areas of the South, air conditioning costs are almost $450 a year. A 2014 Climate Central analysis of projected future summer temperatures shows that by 2100 New England summers will be as hot as current summers in Florida, dramatically increasing the need for artificial cooling.

Methodology: Trends in minimum temperatures and cooling degree days were calculated using data from the Applied Climate Information System (rcc-acis.org). Both analyses excluded years with more than 60 days of missing data. For the analysis of days with a minimum temperature at or above 65°F (or 55°F for a smaller subset), we counted the total number of days with a minimum temperature each year at or above that threshold. Cooling degree days were calculated using the sum of the daily cooling degree days measure. All analyses were performed in R. Trends were estimated using R’s simple linear regression model.

Climate Central's Jennifer Brady contributed data analysis for this story.

Astros send closer Ken Giles down to the minors      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
In what has to be considered an absolutely shocking move, the defending World Series champion Houston Astros have demoted closer Ken Giles to Triple-A while calling up young arm Cionel Perez. A core member of last year’s championship squad, the 27-year-old Giles has struggled a ton this season. He pitched to a 4.99 ERA with a 1.27 WHIP prior to being sent down to Fresno. Now that Giles is in the minors, fellow veteran Hector Rondon will take over closer duties on a full-time basis. He’s pitching to a stellar 1.62 ERA and has seven saves on the season. It also remains to be seen what Houston has planned for Perez. He’s being called up directly from Double-A. The 22-year-old Cuban has been dominating in the minors this season. Prior to getting the call, he boasted a 6-1 record with a 2.37 ERA and 83 strikeouts over 68.1 innings. The starter entered this season as Houston’s sixth-best prospect. He joins top overall prospect Kyle Tucker in the bigs.
Astros demote struggling closer Ken Giles      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Ken Giles has gone from Houston Astros closer to minor leaguer. The Astros optioned Giles to AAA Fresno on Wednesday, a day after being charged three earned runs and not recording an out against the Oakland Athletics. Giles posted a 2.30 ERA last season and seemed like one of the best closers in the game. He collapsed during the postseason, though, and that has carried over into 2018, with his bad outing Wednesday raising his ERA to 4.99.One has to wonder if this outburst had anything to do with Giles’s demotion. The Astros are doing so well in so many departments, and they don’t need to put up with this sort of thing from a reliever who isn’t performing, even if it’s a high-profile one.
