  • The reality of Tesla's business is far more modest than the war over its stock price and market cap would suggest.
  • Tesla is ultimately a small car company operating in a small market for electric vehicles.
  • It's possible that business boredom is driving the up-and-down Tesla story.

In over a decade of covering both Tesla and the auto industry, I've never seen anything like the past 12 months. 

The feeding frenzy around Tesla has been unreal: Wall Street longs and shorts fighting it out; an intense focus on the 15-year-old company's ability to execute on the fundamentals of making cars; CEO Elon Musk flipping out on earnings call and taking to Twitter to engage in extended fracas with anybody and everybody.

At times like this, it's worth it to step back and consider some actual numbers. 

For example, Tesla delivered about 41,000 vehicles worldwide in the second quarter. I'm not even going to worry about whether they were Model S's, Model X's, or the much-vaunted and obsessively scrutinized Model 3. At this rate. Tesla should post a somewhat better year in 2018 than it did in 2017.

Tesla has also added about $200 million in revenue growth every quarter, although it shifts around; in the first quarter, the topline was $3.4 billion. There have rarely been quarterly profits, but the trendline is obvious and should continue to ascend until Tesla maxes out its existing production design (at its single assembly plant in California). If you build more cars and sell more cars, it follows that more money will flow in.

In the same period, an established automaker — General Motors — sold 760,000 vehicles in the US alone and globally brought in $36 billion in revenue. And that's just GM. The rest of the industry also moved a staggering amount of product and raked in billions in cash. 

One more data point: electric-vehicle sales increased by 50% in early 2018, bringing the EV share of the market up to a still thoroughly unimpressive 1.6%.

The numbers don't add up to what Tesla is worth

Now let's add it all up. Tesla's global sales in the second quarter were 5% of GM's sales in the US alone and a tiny fraction of overall US sales. Tesla had a nice quarter by its standards, but in the US it's moved only around 200,000 vehicles in a decade and a half (once it sells vehicle number 200,000 in the US, a $7,500 federal tax credit will begin to phase out).

On the revenue side, as long as Tesla continues to make more cars than it did in the previous quarter and sell them, it will continue to see revenue growth. The ceiling is limited only by sustainable demand for its vehicles and Tesla's production capacity.

And as far as market share goes, Tesla holds something like 30% of that quite small pie. 

You'll note that I haven't addressed the profit challenge or the cash-burn, the former being zero and the latter being in the billions. These are distractions for the more important numbers because they're givens: if you're selling 100,000 Model S and Model X luxury vehicles for an average price of $100,000, then you should be able to find a path to a margin above 10%. 

But if you aim to add something north of 200,000 in new annual production and charge less for those Model 3's, it's going to degrade the net margins and, in the short term and probably the medium term, consume billions in capital. If Toyota wanted to roll out a new affordable SUV and manufacture it at a new plant, it would be up against the same math.

OK, let's now consider Tesla's market capitalization: $53 billion. GM's is $55 billion. For what it's worth, Ferrari, which sells less than 10,000 cars a year, has a market cap of about $25 billion. If you follow my numbers, then you would logically conclude that Tesla's market cap is completely ridiculous: minuscule production plus tiny overall market doesn't compute.

Now for the really big BUT: revenues don't look bad at all. This is all very back-of-the-envelope, but Tesla could start to see some acceleration there and get $20 billion in the yearly take in its sights by 2019. The trick would then be to flip the massive losses to at least periodic profits, but the topline expansion could be achieved without spending a lot on additional factories. 

What we're left with is a company that, by this analysis, doesn't look to be in awful shape (although I also haven't deeply considered some balance-sheet issues, such as debt and the burdens of developing the solar and energy-storage businesses). But we're also left with a company whose stock price, although a delight for early investors, doesn't make any sense at all.

It does make sense if Tesla could somehow capture a titanic share of the existing car market. But Tesla just can't build enough vehicles to do that, and the market that it has captured a large share of could require decades to scale to a level at which EVs displace internal-combustion-powered cars. 

At root, the evident disconnect between Tesla's business, which is decent, and its stock valuation, which is silly, is simply a sign of the times. Since the financial crisis, too much easy money has been chasing too few market-beating returns. Tesla conveniently staged an IPO in 2010 and has ridden this wave. 

Bullish investors see Tesla as the next Apple (or perhaps even more) and bears think the company is a doomed quasi-Ponzi scheme that's headed for liquidation (oddly, the bankruptcy predictors never talk about Tesla going bust and then restructuring). But both camps are trapped in investor land and aren't really considering Tesla in terms of the right analogies. 

Tesla looks a lot like Saturn

As a company, Tesla actually reminds me of Saturn, a GM division launched in the mid-1980s that sold cars via an innovative dealership channel. Saturn delivered between 200,000 and 300,000 vehicles annually from about 1993 until the years just before the GM bankruptcy.

GM's notorious, ill-fated, yet much-beloved electric car, the EV-1, was leased through Saturn stores. In the beginning, Saturn attracted a cheerfully cultlike following and minted loyal, happy owners who forged an identity not unlike what we now see among Tesla customers, minus the Musk factor.

Saturn also never made any money for GM. But for much of its existence, while it lost money it didn't lose anywhere near as mush as Tesla. Nobody ever scrupulously parsed Saturn production, either. The brand had its own factory in Tennessee and controlled between 1%-2% of US market share up until 2007.

For Tesla to live up to financial expectations, it needs to get much bigger than it now is, in terms of production and sales. This could happen if it achieves massive scale in China, where the auto market could conceivably double in size, from 20 million to 40 million in annual sales, by the middle of the century.

The rest of the world is dicier because in developed markets, sales growth is already tapped out — Tesla would have to displace numerous established players, a costly undertaking that would require even more capital spending than Tesla is already up against to expand its manufacturing capacity. 

Never say never, but I don't think this is going to happen. So somewhere between absolute failure and taking over the world, we have the Tesla reality. A small carmaker, a small market, but with the kind of historic access to capital that's created a highly fraught, financial reality-distortion field. (Musk's new pay package, more than the elevated stock price, is Exhibit A: it proposes a market cap of $650 billion, making Tesla eventually more valuable than the Detroit Big Three, Toyota, and Volkswagen combined, by a wide margin.)

So there: I've lightly crunched some numbers and offered an automotive history lesson. It wasn't necessary to muster spectacular industry flame outs, such as Preston Tucker or John DeLorean. So why the Tesla feeding frenzy? 

A big part of it is that no new car company has come along in decades, so nobody knows what's the wild, wild early days look like (although back to Saturn, which was pretty low drama by contrast). But business boredom is also a factor. The auto industry is doing great, with record sales and profits. The banking system is stable. The giants of Silicon Valley are more giant than ever. Unemployment is low. Corporations just got a huge tax cut. Tesla is the only crazy thing in this landscape, the equivalent of the Trump story in politics. 

For most people these days, automakers are also black boxes. Folks buy and lease cars all the time, but unlike with older generations, they don't much interact with vehicles outside of driving them (cars aren't designed to be tinkered with in the ways they once were, either — car companies would almost rather than owners avoid getting under the hood).

I won't say we're beset with manufacturing illiteracy because that would be too extreme, but as the car business has become more technologically advanced, a broader understanding of how the industry works has eroded. And this has happened at the same time that Tesla arrived on the scene. That, in turn, has distorted expectations for the company because being a new player and going from zero cars built to over 100,000 every year is incredibly difficult. 

Basically, nearly everybody who has tried to do what Tesla is doing has failed. So it's understandable that the debate and discussion around the company has become unreal. Tesla's ongoing existence, to put it bluntly, defies reality. 

But that isn't an excuse for allowing Tesla to become a subject of fantasy or baseless speculation. There is actually a middle ground, and that's where Tesla should rightly be.

    My main contention is GM on Model 3 in q3 to get to GAAP net profit.
    Model 3 GM's as far as I have gathered from here and tsla 10Q's:
    -8% in q1 18
    hoping for 0% in q2
    to get GAAP profit, I agree with you, GM has to jump to high teens for q3.

    I dont think that's possible. Have to admit, its my hunch rather than based on detailed number-bashing. Hunch predicated by tent/assembly line and observations of massive scrap heaps and defective product heaps observed at Fremont.

    • The reality of Tesla's business is far more modest than the war over its stock price and market cap would suggest.
    • Tesla is ultimately a small car company operating in a small market for electric vehicles.
    • It's possible that business boredom is driving the up-and-down Tesla story.

    In over a decade of covering both Tesla and the auto industry, I've never seen anything like the past 12 months. 

    The feeding frenzy around Tesla has been unreal: Wall Street longs and shorts fighting it out; an intense focus on the 15-year-old company's ability to execute on the fundamentals of making cars; CEO Elon Musk flipping out on earnings call and taking to Twitter to engage in extended fracas with anybody and everybody.

    At times like this, it's worth it to step back and consider some actual numbers. 

    For example, Tesla delivered about 41,000 vehicles worldwide in the second quarter. I'm not even going to worry about whether they were Model S's, Model X's, or the much-vaunted and obsessively scrutinized Model 3. At this rate. Tesla should post a somewhat better year in 2018 than it did in 2017.

    Tesla has also added about $200 million in revenue growth every quarter, although it shifts around; in the first quarter, the topline was $3.4 billion. There have rarely been quarterly profits, but the trendline is obvious and should continue to ascend until Tesla maxes out its existing production design (at its single assembly plant in California). If you build more cars and sell more cars, it follows that more money will flow in.

    In the same period, an established automaker — General Motors — sold 760,000 vehicles in the US alone and globally brought in $36 billion in revenue. And that's just GM. The rest of the industry also moved a staggering amount of product and raked in billions in cash. 

    One more data point: electric-vehicle sales increased by 50% in early 2018, bringing the EV share of the market up to a still thoroughly unimpressive 1.6%.

    The numbers don't add up to what Tesla is worth

    Now let's add it all up. Tesla's global sales in the second quarter were 5% of GM's sales in the US alone and a tiny fraction of overall US sales. Tesla had a nice quarter by its standards, but in the US it's moved only around 200,000 vehicles in a decade and a half (once it sells vehicle number 200,000 in the US, a $7,500 federal tax credit will begin to phase out).

    On the revenue side, as long as Tesla continues to make more cars than it did in the previous quarter and sell them, it will continue to see revenue growth. The ceiling is limited only by sustainable demand for its vehicles and Tesla's production capacity.

    And as far as market share goes, Tesla holds something like 30% of that quite small pie. 

    You'll note that I haven't addressed the profit challenge or the cash-burn, the former being zero and the latter being in the billions. These are distractions for the more important numbers because they're givens: if you're selling 100,000 Model S and Model X luxury vehicles for an average price of $100,000, then you should be able to find a path to a margin above 10%. 

    But if you aim to add something north of 200,000 in new annual production and charge less for those Model 3's, it's going to degrade the net margins and, in the short term and probably the medium term, consume billions in capital. If Toyota wanted to roll out a new affordable SUV and manufacture it at a new plant, it would be up against the same math.

    OK, let's now consider Tesla's market capitalization: $53 billion. GM's is $55 billion. For what it's worth, Ferrari, which sells less than 10,000 cars a year, has a market cap of about $25 billion. If you follow my numbers, then you would logically conclude that Tesla's market cap is completely ridiculous: minuscule production plus tiny overall market doesn't compute. 

    Cutting Tesla down to size

    Now for the really big BUT: revenues don't look bad at all. This is all very back-of-the-envelope, but Tesla could start to see some acceleration there and get $20 billion in the yearly take in its sights by 2019. The trick would then be to flip the massive losses to at least periodic profits, but the topline expansion could be achieved without spending a lot on additional factories. 

    What we're left with is a company that, by this analysis, doesn't look to be in awful shape (although I also haven't deeply considered some balance-sheet issues, such as debt and the burdens of developing the solar and energy-storage businesses). But we're also left with a company whose stock price, although a delight for early investors, doesn't make any sense at all.

    It does make sense if Tesla could somehow capture a titanic share of the existing car market. But Tesla just can't build enough vehicles to do that, and the market that it has captured a large share of could require decades to scale to a level at which EVs displace internal-combustion-powered cars. 

    At root, the evident disconnect between Tesla's business, which is decent, and its stock valuation, which is silly, is simply a sign of the times. Since the financial crisis, too much easy money has been chasing too few market-beating returns. Tesla conveniently staged an IPO in 2010 and has ridden this wave. 

    Bullish investors see Tesla as the next Apple (or perhaps even more) and bears think the company is a doomed quasi-Ponzi scheme that's headed for liquidation (oddly, the bankruptcy predictors never talk about Tesla going bust and then restructuring). But both camps are trapped in investor land and aren't really considering Tesla in terms of the right analogies. 

    Tesla looks a lot like Saturn

    As a company, Tesla actually reminds me of Saturn, a GM division launched in the mid-1980s that sold cars via an innovative dealership channel. Saturn delivered between 200,000 and 300,000 vehicles annually from about 1993 until the years just before the GM bankruptcy.

    GM's notorious, ill-fated, yet much-beloved electric car, the EV-1, was leased through Saturn stores. In the beginning, Saturn attracted a cheerfully cultlike following and minted loyal, happy owners who forged an identity not unlike what we now see among Tesla customers, minus the Musk factor.

    Saturn also never made any money for GM. But for much of its existence, while it lost money it didn't lose anywhere near as mush as Tesla. Nobody ever scrupulously parsed Saturn production, either. The brand had its own factory in Tennessee and controlled between 1%-2% of US market share up until 2007.

    For Tesla to live up to financial expectations, it needs to get much bigger than it now is, in terms of production and sales. This could happen if it achieves massive scale in China, where the auto market could conceivably double in size, from 20 million to 40 million in annual sales, by the middle of the century.

    The rest of the world is dicier because in developed markets, sales growth is already tapped out — Tesla would have to displace numerous established players, a costly undertaking that would require even more capital spending than Tesla is already up against to expand its manufacturing capacity. 

    Never say never, but I don't think this is going to happen. So somewhere between absolute failure and taking over the world, we have the Tesla reality. A small carmaker, a small market, but with the kind of historic access to capital that's created a highly fraught, financial reality-distortion field. (Musk's new pay package, more than the elevated stock price, is Exhibit A: it proposes a market cap of $650 billion, making Tesla eventually more valuable than the Detroit Big Three, Toyota, and Volkswagen combined, by a wide margin.)

    So there: I've lightly crunched some numbers and offered an automotive history lesson. It wasn't necessary to muster spectacular industry flame outs, such as Preston Tucker or John DeLorean. So why the Tesla feeding frenzy? 

    A big part of it is that no new car company has come along in decades, so nobody knows what's the wild, wild early days look like (although back to Saturn, which was pretty low drama by contrast). But business boredom is also a factor. The auto industry is doing great, with record sales and profits. The banking system is stable. The giants of Silicon Valley are more giant than ever. Unemployment is low. Corporations just got a huge tax cut. Tesla is the only crazy thing in this landscape, the equivalent of the Trump story in politics. 

    For most people these days, automakers are also black boxes. Folks buy and lease cars all the time, but unlike with older generations, they don't much interact with vehicles outside of driving them (cars aren't designed to be tinkered with in the ways they once were, either — car companies would almost rather than owners avoid getting under the hood).

    I won't say we're beset with manufacturing illiteracy because that would be too extreme, but as the car business has become more technologically advanced, a broader understanding of how the industry works has eroded. And this has happened at the same time that Tesla arrived on the scene. That, in turn, has distorted expectations for the company because being a new player and going from zero cars built to over 100,000 every year is incredibly difficult. 

    Basically, nearly everybody who has tried to do what Tesla is doing has failed. So it's understandable that the debate and discussion around the company has become unreal. Tesla's ongoing existence, to put it bluntly, defies reality. 

    But that isn't an excuse for allowing Tesla to become a subject of fantasy or baseless speculation. There is actually a middle ground, and that's where Tesla should rightly be.

    Got another snap before we left the parking area on Bridge Avenue: as I said earlier, the west end of the bridge runs right into the hillside. At that end, the roadway makes a T-intersection with Bridge Avenue which allows a good viewpoint for a straight-on view up the road.


    The pavement makes it easy to snap this POV without having to walk out into traffic to do it and really puts the gothic arch details of the tower into viewable aspect, letting them be the star.

    This corner of Portland is quite far out from the city center, nearly seven miles out. Views south and east from the roadway, both NW Bridge Avenue and NW St Helens Road, reveal the working harbor of Portland, the lowest few miles of the Willamette River - wide, cool, and mighty.

    That lift span bridge in the middle distance is Portland's hidden bridge, which doesn't even have a name really, and carries the railroad main line north into the cut through the North Portland peninsula and to Vancouver and points north.

    Though the area on the west side of the river does have a rather descriptive name: Willbridge. 
     

    NW Saint Helens Road travels between industry and tank farms on the left as you're inbound to city center, and on the right, the towering, forested hills of Forest Park. Old, careworn industrial lots and orphaned gas stations predominate on the right hand side of the road as well, with a handful of homes (including two rather incongruous vintage fourplexes) scattered amongst, and a few avenues intersecting numbered in the NW 60s running back only about a block before dead-ending into the hill.

    Very soon on the end of this district, at the cross street of NW Kittridge Avenue, the main road swerves and assumes the name NW Yeon Avenue, Saint Helens Road assuming the role of the old highway and straightlining amongst the industrial district toward the center of town. It's then, more than three miles out, that you notice the great arch of the Fremont Bridge, one of the other iconic river landmarks.

    O CEO da Tesla, Elon Musk, conseguiu na última terça-feira (10) um contrato com as autoridades chinesas para construir uma nova fábrica de automóveis e baterias em Xangai, na China, o maior mercado de auotmóveis do mundo. Será a primeira unidade produtiva da marca fora dos Estados Unidos com capacidade de produzir até 500 mil carros elétricos por ano.

    Esse era, incluisve, o volume de produção projetado até o final de 2018 para a fábrica da Tesla em Fremont, na Califórnia. Mas a meta está longe de ser alcançada. Para se ter uma ideia, o segundo trimestre deste ano foi o melhor para a marca, com a produção de 53.339 unidades. Se a Tesla conseguir produzir 200 mil unidades este ano já será um feito.

     

    O acordo com o governo chinês foi anunciado depois que a Tesla teve de encarecer em até 20% os preços dos carros destinados ao mercado asiático. A nova taxação aos carros feitos nos Estados Unidos foi uma resposta da China às novas tarifas de importação impostas pelo governo americano aos produtos asiáticos.

    Além de erguer uma fábrica na China, a Tesla também se comprometeu a criar em um centro de pesquisa e desenvolvimento. Segundo a agência de notícias Reuters, a marca planeja produzir os primeiros carros dois anos após o início da construção da fábrica. Mas ainda não há previsão para o início das obras.

    Searching for a reasonably priced salad should not be this hard. by Thomas Ross

    In the lull between discussable TV shows, there are two topics of conversation between 9 am and noon in my office: 1) What a bad President we have, and 2) What we are doing for lunch? Both are depressing. The nearby co-op’s salad bar is tiny and wildly inconsistent, often just half a dozen ingredients and a kale salad soaked inexplicably in tahini.

    But what are you going to do? You gotta eat. You gotta not die young. You gotta save money. Yet you’re surrounded by temptation: taco trucks, bento boxes, Uber Eats. Salad bars are the altruistic ideal: good for you, but boring as hell because of it—they’re the print newspaper to Postmates’ Buzzfeed.

    There’s something perversely risky about the salad bar, too. The gamble on an unusual ingredient (Baby corn today? Sick!), the balancing act of keeping items from touching (I got barbecue chicken on my cottage cheese!), and of course the ongoing guessing game of trying not to assemble a four-pound salad ($30 for lunch!?).

    And yes, I know you could make your own lunch, and it could be delicious and nutritious and affordable, but what am I, Giada de Laurentiis? No, I’ll be out here breaking my own heart with a pile of wilted arugula and baby carrots.

    Of course, you have options. They basically fall into a few categories.


    THE GROCERY STORE

    (Standouts: Whole Foods at NE Fremont & 15th, New Seasons Slabtown, World Foods)

    It’s the easiest option for many neighborhoods, and is about the same price range as anywhere else ($7.99-8.99/pound), plus you can whip up a small salad and still have money for a grab-and-go sandwich and a piece of fruit.

    Why you like it:

    • Lots of options
    • Lots of happy, healthy people milling around
    • One-stop shopping (so you can get cat food)

    Why it still makes you sad:

    • Those options are probably just the produce that was about to go bad
    • Lots of people = more judging eyes on your cardboard box full of baby corn and vegan ranch
    • You’re surrounded by reminders that you could make your own lunch at home, if you were a proactive person with a simple learned skill like Sandwich Arts
    • Not a burrito


    THE DOWNTOWN SALAD BAR

    (Sun Salads in Big Pink, Market Street Salad Bar/Cookie Cabana/Wait, what? Cookie Cabana?)

    You want to feel like a real big-city businessperson? How about a bustling salad bar watched over by one bored employee with a friendly “hello” and a thumb on the scale? These establishments are a rare breed, for better or worse, and aren’t that much cheaper (if at all) than grocery stores.

    Why you like it:

    • “New York Style”—i.e., “there’s sushi”
    • No one will try to talk to you
    • Consistent quality

    Why it still makes you sad:

    • “New York Style” doesn’t mean “good sushi”
    • Patrons blanketed in thick patina of mute numbness to the world
    • Constant sound of aggressive food prep in back of house—what are they chopping? Baby carrots?
    • Not a cheeseburger


    THE PLACE THAT JUST DOES BIG SALADS

    (Garden Bar, Crisp)

    If the salad’s going to be the whole meal, it might as well be huge. Unfortunately, for places that do mostly raw food, it’s tough to stomach the overcooked gimmicks at these spots. Just look at the sizing: Crisp on North Williams (some ungodly hybrid of a trendy gym and a Cold Stone Creamery) only makes “big” and “bigger” salads, while Garden Bar (nothing says “yummy salads” like cold, minimal, semi-industrial design) serves “bushel” or “basket” sizes, neither of which sounds bigger than the other. You’ll be pushing the upper limit of cheap with any of these, but at least you’ll be full... for a couple of hours.

    Why you like it:

    • Team of smiling salad professionals makes your salad for you
    • Choose one of their menu salads or build your own.
    • No distracting junk food

    Why it still makes you sad:

    • You are basically forcing someone to ask you things like: “Big or Bigger?”
    • Go with the build-your-own option and watch in horror as someone else puts together your terrible idea of a salad, enacting your basest instincts
    • Vegan cookie is not, as promised, 20 times better than a regular cookie
    • Not a slice of pizza


    THE STRIP CLUB

    (Acropolis)

    Acropolis, home of the cheapest lunch of all: $5 for all you can eat, $3.50 for one go-around. To be honest, it’s a surprisingly well-stocked salad bar, and on a recent visit we were told we were lucky we came at shift change, as it had just been restocked with fresh ingredients. Hungrier? Five dollars also gets you a rib plate, and for $7, a steak. Even with a full belly, you can still afford to make it rain.

    Have you ever walked out of a pot shop with a fresh gram of weed, only to be overcome with disappointment as soon as you open the bag and realize you bought a dud?

    Accidentally buying shitty weed is an unfortunately common experience in Washington, where there’s thousands of pounds of amazing, world-class legal pot, but also a decent amount of garbage weed mixed in. So, what do you do when you’re presented with a hundred different choices and an unhelpful budtender?

    The best tool in your arsenal is your nose: The difference between good and bad weed is often a matter of what aromatic compounds, called terpenes, are present in that piece of cannabis flower, and your olfactory senses are surprisingly good at sniffing out the terpenes you individually like and dislike.

    Unfortunately, legalizing weed has put a hermetically sealed barrier between our noses and our weed. Washington state law requires all pot to be sold in sealed packages (if you want a true pot shopping experience go to Oregon where this law doesn’t exist), meaning gone are the days of a dealer opening up a couple jars of pot and letting your nose guide you to your favorite strain.

    That’s unfortunate because there’s no single visual clue that can guarantee the pot inside the bag is dank, according to Jackson Holder, a cannabis expert and product buyer for Dockside Cannabis in SoDo.

    “It’s definitely a kind of tricky thing because there are very few visual indicators that are going to tell you that this [flower] is for sure aromatic, in fact, I would say there aren’t any,” Holder said.

    Holder said the best way to find great weed is to rely on the advice of a budtender. I agree. Try to find a store and a budtender you trust and then keep giving them your business, just like you would with a black market dealer that consistently supplies fantastic pot.

    But sometimes you are inevitably left with a shitty budtender that doesn’t care and a menu of pot that is ten pages too long. So what’s a stoner to do? I've asked Seattle's foremost pot experts and found a few visual clues that can help guide you away from the shwag and towards the premium sticky icky, icky.

    Great pot is almost always covered with white, salt-like, crystals. These white dots are little glands in the pot plant that produce the oils called cannabinoids that get us high.

    “If you find a saltier looking plant then you have found a winner. Those guys are going to have a lot more cannabinoids," said Ali Khan, a manager at Hashtag Recreational Cannabis in Fremont and Redmond.

    These cannabinoids, of which THC is just one, develop into big bubbles at the ends of these glands, and the bigger the bubbles the more likely the pot is potent. Try to look closely at those white crystals—do they look like full balls of oil or more just like little white dots? Bigger balls mean more oil and a stronger high.

    “It’s very possible to grow cannabis that is super frosty with trichomes all over it but it’s possible those trichomes never got filled,” Holder said. “I want to see if it's not just frosty, but when I look down I want to see trichomes that are bursting with oil.”

    Some shops provide handy magnifying glasses for checking out flower in closer detail – grab one of these and hold your pot up to it. Don’t feel bad taking your time and using all of the tools in front of you, a good budtender will never rush you into making a decision.

    A specific color will never determine great pot. There are thousands of different unique cannabis strains and each one has its own natural hues, some are bright green, some are dark purple, and some are even gold. But sometimes discoloring can be a sign of bad weed.

    The biggest warning sign to look for is a bleached bud that has been discolored because of prolonged exposure to light. This isn’t necessarily just a lighter shade of weed—remember lighter shades can just mean a different strain—bleaching usually shows itself as an irregular discoloring. Instead of the entire bud being a light color, only one section of the nug, the part that was exposed to light, becomes bleached and light, while the rest of the weed remains its natural hue.

    “If you have a product that has been bleached, by the time that happens the relevant aromatics are going to go away,” Holder said.

    Other than those signs of bleaching, color isn’t a very good indicator of quality. A deep and dark green hue can indicate a grower cut corners on their curing process, but it could also just indicate a particularly green nug that was carefully cured immediately after harvest.

    A faded gold or light white color may indicate that the pot you are looking at is old and stale, but it also could just be a particularly light-colored strain. Proper Acapulco Gold hardly looks green at all, but it’s still a highly prized heirloom strain.

    In short, watch out for irregular bleaching of your pot leaves, but otherwise different colors don’t necessarily mean good or bad weed.

    The size of the pot nugs in question can help tell part of its story. Pot plants put more energy into their flowers that are higher up on the plant or on its outer edges, making these nugs larger and more potent. That doesn’t mean there’s something inherently wrong with small nugs – often called “popcorn nugs” in the industry – but picking larger flowers over smaller flower tends to be a good way to hedge your bets.

    “If I was given the option to get one three-gram nug or three single-gram nugs, from a quality perspective I would choose the single larger nug every single time,” Jackson said.

    Growers call the biggest buds on a plant the “colas,” and they can tower over the rest of the plant. Farms tend to save these big colas for larger quantity sales, like eighths and quarters, which is one reason to avoid buying single grams, according to Bill Eddy, a cannabis expert and manager at Ruckus Recreational on Capitol Hill.

    “When you buy a gram you are getting the lower buds off the plant,” Eddy said. “Black market growers keep the colas to themselves, so that’s saying something.”

    Paying attention to the shape of the nug itself is also a good way to find quality pot. Growers must trim leaves off the pot flower before it is sold – the leaves don’t contain those oily glands that get you high – and some farms use automated machines instead of hand trimming their pot. These machines can damage the flower and shake off those precious trichomes. Machine trimmed pot tends to have uniform edges, whereas hand-trimmed pot tends to look asymmetrical.

    “Irregular edges mean they are hand cut, it means they’re carefully trimming and taking care of their pot,” Eddy said.

    Another thing to look for is what kind of debris is at the bottom of the container. Is there a bunch of little leaves and a lot of trichome crystals sitting at the bottom of the jar? That’s a sign that this flower was poorly handled during processing and shipping. Even the dankest weed, the most sugary, crystal-covered flower, will not drop a pile of its trichomes if it's properly handled.

    “A pile of crystals at the bottom of the jar is because they’re banging on the fucking jar,” Eddy said.

    Hairs

    If you’re buying your pot at a legal weed shop you shouldn’t concern yourself too much with the little hairs that you sometimes see on strains. They can be white or orange or even brown and have an aesthetic appeal, but they have more to do with the genetics of the plant than its quality. Some strains just naturally grow more hairs than others.

    A hairy nug once indicated something special during the black market days, when lower quality dealers would smash a bunch of weed into a brick and ship it, damaging any hairs in the process.

    “Hair is often a big indicator in a black market that isn’t served by craft cannabis,” Holder said. “If the hair is making it to your pipe [in the black market] it is likely that the product was taken care of.”

    So, don’t worry about the hairs.

    Test Results

    Washington, like every legal state, requires farms to test their flower and label each product with its cannabinoid percentage. You should pay attention to these labels as one signal in your hunt for good weed, but if you buy flower solely based on its cannabinoid percentage you will frequently be disappointed.

    The difference between mediocre and amazing weed is almost always a question of the terpenes, those aromatic compounds, not the amount of THC in a plant. I am frequently blown away by flower that tests at just 11 or 12 percent THC, but has a rich and dynamic profile of terpenes. And I’ve bought flower labeled as 26 percent THC that gave me a mediocre high.

    There’s also still a lot of problems with the testing industry in Washington, growers will shop around to find whoever will give them their highest THC percentages, so relying soley on these numbers is a fool’s game.
