Emission Petition: Boise Students Deliver More Than 1,000 Postcards Urging City to Adopt Clean Energy      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
"Idaho is now sprinting in the wrong direction" when it comes to embracing clean energy and educating students about climate change, one student said. There's a disconnect between state and local when it comes to concern over climate change and adopting clean energy. In February, the Idaho House passed K-12 science education standards that omitted any reference to fossil fuels' impact on climate change, only to be overridden by the Idaho Senate. City Hall is striking a different tone, as Boise Mayor Dave Bieter was among the first mayors in the country to subscribe to the Mayor's Agreement on Climate Change in 2005, and the Public Works Commission will get an update on the Climate Adaptation Assessment later this week. Boise-area high school students—members of the Climate Justice League—and the Idaho chapter of the Sierra Club met at Camel's Back Park on July 10 to announce they, too, should have a say in how the city and state work toward clean energy and address climate change. Presenting Boise City Council President Lauren McLean with more than 1,000 postcards thanking the city for its efforts to embrace renewable energy, they said they were disappointed with with the Idaho House's resistance to including climate change in science education standards. "If we don't do something now, our lives are going to change," said Adam Thompson, a student at Capital High School, who added he believes the State of Idaho is doing itself a disservice by largely ignoring the threat posed by climate change. "Idaho is now sprinting in the wrong direction." Therese Etoka, a recent graduate of Boise High School who will attend college in Connecticut this fall, said the effects of climate change are mostly suffered by marginalized communities like the poor, people living in rural areas and people of color. "There's people that are left out, and those are people who are the most impacted," she said. "We're representing rural communities. It's about all of Idaho." One of the students who testified before the Idaho House Education Committee in February, Etoka said she was silenced by its chair, Rep. Julie VanOrden (R-Pingree), who cut off testimony from anyone who referenced climate change. "That was disheartening," she said. "I was taken aback. I wasn't even sure what I'd heard." Speaking to the students, McLean said she would like to take the postcards with her to City Hall, where they can be put on display, and reiterated her and the City Council's commitment to combating climate change and working toward using 100 percent clean energy. "Our council and…
Starbucks to Phase Out Plastic Straws by 2020      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The company, which is the largest food and beverage chain to take the anti-plastic straw plunge worldwide so far, estimates the move will keep more than 1 billion pieces of single-use plastic out of the landfill every year. On July 9, Starbucks made an announcement that may just change the way the world drinks coffee: by 2020, it will no longer use plastic straws in any of its stores across the globe. The company, which is the largest food and beverage chain to take the anti-plastic straw plunge worldwide so far, estimates the move will keep more than 1 billion pieces of single-use plastic out of the landfill every year. "Sustainability is part of our DNA and has been so for 30-plus years," a Starbucks spokesperson told Boise Weekly. "... Over the last five years, our cold beverage platform has grown significantly to over 50 percent of sales, while the movement to eliminate plastic straws has also been gaining momentum globally. For these reasons, along with requests from our customers, partners and shareholders, we will develop a recyclable alternative to plastic straws: it’s the right thing for our environment, our partners (employees) and our business." The announcement came on the heels of smaller commitments from other fast-food giants like McDonald's, which the BBC reported will replace plastic straws with paper in its stores in the UK and Ireland this fall, as well as grassroots advocacy for alternatives. One Starbucks employee, Stephanie Muttillo, started a petition for the elimination of plastic straws at the chain in April, which was electronically signed by nearly 150,000 people using the Care2 Petitions platform. In a press release, Muttillo reacted to the Starbucks announcement, saying, “As a Starbucks employee, it's welcomed news to hear the company will phase out the use of plastic straws in their stores by 2020. This is an important first step to cleaning up our seas and protecting wildlife, and I am proud to see Starbucks take this step toward sustainability and promoting a healthier planet for all.” To replace plastic straws, Starbucks has created a so-called "strawless lid," which looks much like the lid currently used for hot beverages, but made from clear rather than opaque plastic. The new recyclable lids are already being tested for a couple of drinks at 8,000 stores in the U.S. and Canada, and should be fully phased in by 2020. After the transition, paper or compostable straws will still be offered on request. …
Trump Pardons Oregon Ranchers Whose Convictions Triggered Malheur Occupation      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
“The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West.” On Tuesday, July 10, President Donald Trump pardoned two Oregon ranchers whose convictions of torching public lands triggered an armed occupation at an eastern Oregon wildlife refuge in 2016.  Dwight Hammond, 76, and his son Steven, 49, had a long history of conflict with the U.S. government which culminated in their convictions for setting fires, one in 2001 and another in 2006, on federal lands. They were each sentenced to five-year prison terms, which attracted the attention of other anti-government protesters, including Ammon and Cliven Bundy. In January, 2016, an armed group of sympathizers, including Ammon Bundy, took over the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon. Nearly a month later, a total of 26 people, including Bundy, were arrested on federal charges of conspiracy. The charges were ultimately dropped against Bundy and nearly all of the other militants. The New York Times reports that during Tuesday morning's media briefing, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that Trump had pardoned the Hammonds. “The Hammonds are multi-generation cattle ranchers in Oregon imprisoned in connection with a fire that leaked onto a small portion of neighboring public grazing land,” said  Sanders. “The Hammonds are devoted family men, respected contributors to their local community, and have widespread support from their neighbors, local law enforcement, and farmers and ranchers across the West.” Reporters Eileen Sullivan and Julie Turkewitz of the Times write, "The pardons appear to represent the Trump administration’s support of ranchers in the battle over federal lands and also undo an Obama administration appeal to impose longer sentences for the Hammonds." …

Why is Sierra Vista-Douglas, Arizona on the list – that’s a stone’s throw from the border with Mexico, state income tax is 5%, ought to be a retiree paradise. Brownsville-Harlingen, Texas? SING TO ME NOW

By Iris Dauterman

Directed by Jenny McConnell Frederick

October 19, 2018 - November 18, 2018

Atlas Performing Arts Center

"Every second you hesitate, every moment you're not writing, furiously writing, or dancing, or singing, things are getting worse. So hurry. Up."

Calliope is the last surviving Muse. Drowning in the demands from a world desperate for inspiration, she does what any self respecting Greek Goddess would do: She hires an intern. Soon it becomes clear that Calliope is burying a deeper pain and the fate of the universe may lie in this human intern's ability to save her. Playwright Iris Dauterman uses sardonic humor, poetry and a deeply contemporary voice to create a comedy about overcoming tragedy.

IRIS DAUTERMAN is a playwright from San Luis Obispo, California. She holds an MFA in Playwriting from Indiana University, and a BA in Drama from Bennington College. She is a two-time finalist for the Heideman Award whose plays have been workshopped or produced at the Berkshire Fringe Festival, the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Arts, Indiana University, Animus Theatre Company, the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, Campfire Theatre Festival, Little Lifeboats Theatre, the New American Theatre, Boise Contemporary Theatre, Rorschach Theatre, Spicy Witch Productions, and Storefront Theatre of Indianapolis.

ABOUT RORSCHACH THEATRE

Through uncommon uses of environment and intimate passionate performances, Rorschach Theatre seeks to lure its audiences beyond the limits of ordinary theatrical experience so that they may discover new elements of their own humanity.

Rorschach Theatre tells stories that allow for innovative design and visceral performances. The company treats productions as "installations" that surround the audience with the world of a play. Our work centers on the intersection of magic or impossible moments and relatable human experience. Without proselytizing, it provides a complex, intellectual catalyst for self-exploration of challenging subjects.

Rorschach is a vital launching pad for emerging artists. By trusting early-career actors, directors, playwrights and designers with substantive artistic responsibilities, and surrounding them with established professionals and ample resources, the company has become an essential showcase for new talent. In addition to the regular season, Rorschach produces "Magic in Rough Spaces," an annual new play development series; "Klecksography," an annual new artist development event (for actors, local playwrights and directors); and "Fight Camp," a stage combat training program held every summer. The company also organizes "Other People's Ink," a monthly non-theatre social events that speak to the company's aesthetic.

Rorschach has produced more than fifty plays seen by tens of thousands of people in the Washington area. The company has been nominated for over a dozen Helen Hayes Awards; won a Mary Goldwater Award; been a finalist for the Mayor's Arts Award; and have been the recipients of multiple grants and awards from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. The company's work has garnered the attention of The New York Times, The Washington Post, American Theatre magazine and National Public Radio, as well as countless local publications.

The Hidden Shame of Boise's Historic-Low Vacancy Rate      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
"Some homeless veterans have significant barriers, which makes them not very competitive in the housing market." On any given night, more than 100 veterans in the Boise metro area sleep on the streets, or are in some type of shelter or transitional housing, according to the latest official Point in Time headcount of the homeless. Of that number, approximately 30 vets are eligible for federally funded rent payment vouchers. On the surface, that seems like good news. But due to Boise's historic-low vacancy rate, the majority of those vets remain homeless because apartments either aren't available or landlords won't be bothered with handling the paperwork. "It's foolish to wait while there are people living and possibly dying on the streets," said Diana Lachiondo, director of community partnerships for the City of Boise. "Right now the 2 percent vacancy [rate] makes it very difficult for people to find affordable housing." Recent efforts to combat homelessness from Lachiondo's colleagues at Boise City Hall and veteran advocacy groups include the much-anticipated construction of a dedicated shelter where homeless vets won't face discrimination by landlords or property managers. Boise officials gave the thumbs up to the project in spring 2017 and a developer should be selected by the end of this summer. If all goes as planned, an apartment complex of 20-30 veterans-only units could open its doors by the fall of 2020. Funding will come from private donations, the Idaho Housing and Finance Association, and the City of Boise, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will pay for supportive services. "It's a huge opportunity for Boise," Lachiondo said. "This is truly a community that cares about veterans, and this is our opportunity to show it's more than just words." The City of Boise's apartment occupancy has hovered between 98 and 99 percent for more than a year. And then there's the issue of what is considered "affordable" when it comes to housing. According to city officials, "affordable" breaks down into several tiers. For example, a person making $13,550 per year would fall into the "extremely low" category, so affordable rent would be about $339 per month. In the "very low" category would be people with an annual income of $22,550, who might consider $564 per month an affordable rent. That said, the inventory of available rentals at those price points is practically non-existent. "A healthy vacancy rate is somewhere around 5 or 6 percent. But a 2 percent or lower vacancy rate is unhealthy," Lachiondo said. In today's…
William Shatner      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
"That's the whole object: having fun. So, come have fun with me in Boise." Where should one begin in describing William Shatner? Captain James Kirk? Denny Crane? T.J. Hooker? His iconic appearance in a classic episode of The Twilight Zone? His one-man Broadway show? His deep passion for breeding show horses? His nearly 30 best-selling books? For the better part of seven decades, the 87-year-old Canadian-born Shatner has appeared on stages across the globe and gone "where no man has gone before" on screens big and small. Prior to his much-anticipated appearance at the inaugural Wizard World Comic Con in Boise (Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 15), Shatner talked with Boise Weekly about spending time with his legions of fans, a long list of upcoming projects (including a Christmas album) and his universal passions. Can I assume that you're as busy as you've ever been? That's absolutely true, given the fact that I have a new book coming out in the next couple of months, plus two new record albums. I've seen you interact with audiences. Your relationship with fans is as close as just about any other performer of our times. Well, that's possible. I've toured with my one-man Broadway show, taking me to just about every city in the U.S. And currently, I'm touring again, this time with special screenings of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. After each screening, I talk with audiences for about an hour. They love it. Up next, I'll have a country album coming out in August and a new Christmas album coming out this fall, and my new book will come out sometime between those two events. I'm reaching a larger audience than ever before, to say nothing of the social media that I've been doing. Are you a fan of social media? Well, I prefer ice cream. But when you communicate via social media, it's immediate. I like it for what it is, and what we can make it do. Yes, there is some ugliness as a result of social media anonymity, but I also believe there's the possibility of a wellspring of goodness in social media. And I'm attempting to tap into that with a new charity I'm calling "Ubuntu," which is a Swahili word for humanity. Let's talk about another one of your passions. How does a kid from Montreal have such a deep love for horses? It's something I asked myself years ago. Our DNA determines what our favorite color…

Opens Friday, July 13 at The Flicks In 1980, a fresh-faced 19-year-old arrived on the campus of Sullivan County Community College in upstate New York as a freshman. He was admittedly rather unpopular, so he was stunned at his overzealous welcome. Nearly everyone he encountered spoke to him as if they were besties, offering slaps on the back, high-fives and the occasional kiss on the cheek. "Hey, welcome back Eddy," he heard from behind. "Eddy...Eddy...Hey, Eddy, wait up." But his name wasn't Eddy. It was Robert Shafran. And when he ultimately ran into Eddy's previous college roommate (it turns out that Eddy didn't return to campus the year Robert arrived), the roommate was stunned. "The same grin, the same curly hair, the same...well, everything," said the roommate who, seconds later, asked Robert, "Is your birthday July 12? Were you adopted?" The answers were yes and yes. The two ran to the nearest phone booth to call Eddy Galland, and ended up hopping into a car and driving 120 miles to Galland's Long Island home. "When he came to the door, it was like looking in a mirror," recalled Shafran. New York City newspapers made the unlikely reunion the feel-good story of 1980. And when the New York Post published a photo of Eddy and Robert with the headline, "The Face Looked Familiar," it sparked a reaction that would make the tale become the feel-really-good story of the year. "I couldn't believe it. They looked like me, holy shit," said David Kellman. "Oh my god, this is not a minor resemblance." Kellman ran for a phone and called Galland's home. When Galland's mother picked up the phone, Kellman couldn't talk fast enough. "My name is David Kellman, I was born July 12, 1961, I'm looking at the photo of Robert and Eddy right now," he shouted. The trio became a media sensation. Ask anyone who was around in 1980 and they can probably recall the story of the three brothers, separated at birth and adopted by different families. Nearly four decades ago, David, Eddy and Robert appeared with a much-younger Tom Brokaw and Jane Pauley on the Today Show, and as special guests on Phil Donahue's No. 1-rated talk show. The newly reunited triplets made the front pages of practically every major newspaper in North America and were on the covers of Time, People and even Good Housekeeping. They made cameo appearances in the hottest TV sitcom of…
Boise's (Very, Very) Long-Term Planning      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
"All these years later, I can tell you this is a daily push." While a robust debate continues to swirl about "smart growth" in Boise, the city's Public Works Commission will dive in to more long-term conversations on Wednesday, July 11, specifically regarding the environment and sustainability. In 2017, Boise Mayor Dave Bieter joined more than 70 other U.S. mayors to urge President Donald Trump to reconsider pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement. "Knowing how important this is to Boiseans, it was a pretty easy decision to make," said Bieter. "Ever since [Trump's] election, we've prepared to push as hard as we can on certain issues." The mayor wasn't a Dave-come-lately to the debate. He was among the first in the nation—and the first Idaho mayor—to sign onto a Mayor's Agreement on Climate Change in 2005. "All these years later, I can tell you this is a daily push," said Bieter. That push will be renewed this week by the Public Works Commission when it gets an update on a Climate Adaptation Assessment that has identified four key tasks: analysis of the city's current energy usage; consideration of renewables and energy efficiencies; evaluation of practical, achievable goals; and development of timeframes and metrics to assess progress. Additionally, the Public Works Commission will get an update on the city's much-touted plastic recycling program, in the wake of a massive roll-out and community outreach on how residents should be managing their used plastics. To date, city staff says the program has been experiencing "some contamination" issues with high levels of No. 1 plastics (i.e. milk or detergent jugs, soft drink bottles) ending up in the recently distributed orange-colored Hefty EnergyBags. Staff said it's an ongoing process, and even after eight community sessions attracted more than 500 attendees in April and May, they expect more in-person outreach sessions in the near future.…
Multi-Trick Ponies: Bread & Circus Releases Smart, Smooth Sophomore Album      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Bread & Circus will play two record release shows at Pengilly's on Friday, July 13, and Saturday, July 14, and an album release set at The Record Exchange on Wednesday, July 11. Local rock group Bread & Circus is frequently called a jam band. Its members have varying feelings about the description. "We certainly have the capability—and sure, we've done it to indulge a crowd—but for our own personal gain, I don't think that's where we want to be," said drummer Mike Brother. "But you know, I'll take whatever tag they want to throw on us. I just like playing live music and being in a band." Songwriter-guitarist Michael Blumenstein has a more pointed reaction. "I kind of resent the idea that we're a jam band," he said. "I used to listen to a hell of a lot of jam bands, and my overriding issue with being labeled a jam band is [they're] good musicians but can't write a song to save their lives." Blumenstein is happier with other descriptions he's heard. "It's cool to meet people after our shows [who say], 'I really like you guys because you sound like 311,'" he said. "Or Dire Straits—people think that we sound like Dire Straits. We get Little Feat, this and that. I actually got a lady at a private gig up in Spokane, and she said we sounded like The Smiths." "It was the quote on your guitar," Brother quipped. "She was subliminally [influenced]." "Maybe," Blumenstein conceded. "[I've] got a sticker on my guitar from a Smiths song." Whatever you might call Bread & Circus or hear in its music, you can't deny the band's talent. Brother's drums and Jon Engelund's bass create smooth, steady grooves that support Brady Meyers' sprightly mandolin and Blumenstein's slick, Jerry Garcia-influenced guitar solos. Blumenstein's literate, cryptic lyrics give the group's songs even more distinction, combining playful absurdity with jabs of social criticism. Titanic Love Affair (self-released, 2018), the latest Bread & Circus album, captures the band's mix of quirky wit and musical dexterity. Boise music fans can hear that mix live when the group plays two record release shows at Pengilly's on Friday, July 13, and Saturday, July 14. Bread & Circus will also play an album release set at The Record Exchange on Wednesday, July 11. In its own mellow way, Bread & Circus constantly upends expectations. For example, the band's sound may be steeped in Americana and Southern rock, but Blumenstein and company drew inspiration from a surprising number of English sources as young men. "In high school, a friend of mine took…
All Fried Up: Celebrate National French Fry Day on the Basque Block      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The Gem State's favorite snack will be exchanged for a suggested donation to The Idaho Foodbank. Last year for National French Fry Day—which falls on June 13 each year—Boiseans flocked to Simplot's downtown offices to inhale piles of hot, golden fries from the company's 2,000-pound-capacity frier. This year's celebration will be a little different, sponsored by Lamb Weston (the Simplot event is now part of the Twilight Criterium kickoff) and setting up shop in the Basque Block, but one thing remains the same: The Gem State's favorite snack will be exchanged for a suggested donation to The Idaho Foodbank. "This year [NFFD] falls on a Friday—it seemed like the perfect opportunity to celebrate our love of fries with the Treasure Valley community," said Lamb Weston communications and external relations spokesperson Shelby Stoolman. "We'll be serving four popular types of fries and asking attendees to vote for their favorite." Lamb Weston's mobile fry trailers will keep busy from 3-6 p.m., transforming frozen fries into crisp morsels of salty goodness. In addition to voting in the fry contest, guests can take part in a prize giveaway (including potential to score free fries for a year), commemorate the day's greasy fingers in a photo booth and jam out to music from local radio station 102.7 KZMG. With all proceeds going to the foodbank—which provides five meals to hungry Idahoans for every dollar it collects—there's really no downside to showing up. So grab your wallet, and get ready to celebrate the spud in true Idaho style.…

Well, the time has arrived. The first workshop kicked off in late May, but an upcoming one at the Boise Co-op in The Village at Meridian on Thursday, July 12, will continue the SRA mission of offering solar consultations, assessments and installations to curious customers. “We’re out there telling people it’s still full steam ahead, and Idaho is still a great place to have solar,” SRA Executive Director Wendy Wilson told BW in May. To find out more about dropping your power bill for the planet, score some free snacks and meet the SRA team, put the Co-op workshop on your schedule.…

Knitting Factory, Sunday, July 15 If you asked them, the members of alt-rock band X Ambassadors might tell you their ambassadorial mission is twofold: for the last few years, the group has pushed both radio-ready music and political activism. In 2015, X Ambassadors released its first full-length album, VHS (KIDinaKORNER), which spawned hits "Renegades" and "Unsteady," but also produced a single benefiting the ACLU and played in support of Planned Parenthood on the day of the 2017 Women’s March. Posts on gun violence and President Donald Trump’s latest policy moves grace the group’s Facebook page almost as often as tour snapshots, but it’s the latter that will bring X Ambassadors to Boise on Sunday, July 15, in support of its new jazz- and gospel-inspired single, “Joyful.” Hit The Knit for a dose of pop as easy-listening as it is progressive.
Alive After Five: Afrosonics      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Grove Plaza, Wednesday, July 11 Afro-indie phenomenon Afrosonics has been a Boise go-to for upbeat summer tunes since its formation in 2013. With eight members, the group can come across as more of a collective than a band, offering up a signature blend of beats created by multinational instruments, from keyboards, vocals and guitars to Middle Eastern "daf" drums and flutes homemade from PVC pipe. The octet's debut album, People Meet Your People (636671 Records DK, 2016), gyrates between funky, brass-heavy electronic tracks and mellow, hoarse chants accompanied by meandering guitar. Though the band's lyrics are often a mix of English and African dialects, the power of each song comes through on the beats alone. Stop by Afrosonics' Alive After Five show to add some African flair to your summer soundtrack.

Downtown Boise, Saturday, July 14 The Twilight Criterium lasts just one day, but that doesn't stop bike-loving Boiseans from waiting for its arrival all year. Luckily, the race is finally back in town and both professional and amature cyclists from across the country are in full prep mode to shred some asphalt. The event kicks off with the annual kid's ride and autograph session led by Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong at noon, and continues with men's and women's races, plus a Boise GreenBike celebrity bike ride. At 6:50 p.m., an opening ceremony will celebrate the start of pro racing, which eager fans can watch from the Twilight Fan Expo at Cecil D. Andrus Park. A closing ceremony will wrap up the event at 10 p.m. and signal the start of another year of waiting—so make the most of the TC while it lasts.

It goes by a number of names: the "magic tap," the "fizz saver" or the rather verbose "magic 3d upside down soda bottle drinking dispenser." Call it what you want, but we like its affordability (online prices range between $3 and $8) and we love its full-tilt gadget-ness. The concept is simple: It's a plastic doodad that twists onto the top of any 1- or 2-liter soda bottle creating an air-tight seal. Flip the bottle upside down and you have a convenient, push-in dispenser that can even be mounted in your refrigerator. The fizz saver has a non-slip bottom, is dishwasher safe and the bottle's fizz lasts until it's empty. We particularly love it for camping and outdoor entertaining.…

Racism is not an acceptable opinion and no one is required to tolerate such rhetoric on social media or in daily life. Dear Minerva, I really try to be open-minded and accept that we all come from different parts of the world and have different viewpoints, but recently one of my Facebook "friends" made some blatantly racist remarks. So my question is, do I call him out publicly like was done to Roseanne Barr, or just quietly unfriend him? —Sincerely, Holding Back Dear Holding Back, I totally understand your desire to call a person out for racist remarks. My first question is, have you called him out privately? If you haven't first tried to bring it to his attention, then it is not a good idea to publicly shame a "friend." The first step is to make him aware. My second question would be, does he have the reach and influence that someone like Roseanne has? Roseanne has the power to affect people on a much larger level. Calling Roseanne out publicly was a result of her very public, widespread rantings. She made her viewpoints clear to millions and reaped what she sowed. Before you call him out publicly ask yourself if anyone will be affected by doing so. Sometimes, the best lesson can be taught by messaging him, telling him why he is wrong, and that, because of this, you cannot continue your friendship. Epic Los Locos Lager, $1.69—$1.99 Brewed at Epic's Denver location, this corn-based lager was originally created exclusively for a local Mexican restaurant. The lager pours the color of cloudy lemonade with little or no head, and intriguing aromas of salty creamed corn and citrus segue into darker, bolder flavors. This is a great sessionable choice for summer. Revision Brewing Blonde NV, $1.79—$2.09 A crystal-clear, straw-colored pour that's almost iridescent, this brew is topped with a very light froth that fades quickly.

Call it what you want, but we like its affordability (online prices range between $3 and $8) and we love its full-tilt gadget-ness.

Racism is not an acceptable opinion and no one is required to tolerate such rhetoric on social media or in daily life. If, however, you aren't open to a discussion/argument, quietly unfriend him and move on.…

http://jumpingjackflashhypothesis.blogspot.com/2012/02/jumping-jack-flash-hypothesis-its-gas.html

The seas, lakes and oceans are now pluming deadly hydrogen sulfide and suffocating methane. Hydrogen sulfide is a highly toxic water-soluble heavier-than-air gas and will accumulate in low-lying areas. Methane is slightly more buoyant than normal air and so will be all around, but will tend to contaminate our atmosphere from the top down. These gases are sickening and killing oxygen-using life all around the world, including human life, as our atmosphere is increasingly poisoned. Because both gases are highly flammable and because our entire civilization is built around fire and flammable fuels, this is leading to more fires and explosions. This is an extinction level event and will likely decimate both the biosphere and human population and it is debatable whether humankind can survive this event.

A. More fires and more explosions, especially along the coasts, but everywhere generally.
B. Many more animal die-offs, of all kinds, and especially oceanic species.
C. More multiples of people will be found dead in their homes, as if they'd dropped dead.
D. More corpses found in low-lying areas, all over the world.
E. More unusual vehicular accidents.
F. Improved unemployment numbers as people die off.

"This is the first traveling water circus in America. Also, Cirque Italia is an animal-free production," said co-creator Chante DeMoustes. "Our show is very affordable for families looking to do a memorable day out." Tickets for the shows—which will take place Thursday, July 12, through Sunday, July 22—run from $10 to $40. DeMoustes said that Cirque Italia specifically chooses small- to medium-sized locales to travel to, because not everyone can afford to travel to larger cities for a Vegas-style performance. "I frequently hear that our show is intimate and interactive compared to other shows," DeMoustes said. "That really sets us apart." Tickets can be ordered online at cirqueitalia.com, and there's a discount available for free child admission with the purchase of any two adult tickets ($20-$30).           Expect a Much Sharper Rick Glenn at UFC Fight Night Boise      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

While featherweight Rick Glenn’s year ended in a disappointing unanimous decision loss to Myles Jury at UFC 219 in December, two wins he had picked up prior and a move to a new team made for 2017 being more positive than not.

As Glenn states, the move from the Midwest to the West Coast had been something he had in mind for some time, and it has definitely paid off during the first half of 2018.

“I moved from Milwaukee out to California to train with Team Alpha Male,” Glenn told MMAWeekly.com. “The training out here has been awesome.

“We’re really enjoying life out here. I couldn’t be happier with the training partners and the people we surround ourselves without here. I’m looking forward to this long layoff to be over.”

Having had nearly seven months off since his last fight, Glenn has been able to use the time to gel with his new team and find his groove in his new surroundings.

“It takes a while to find your flow and get linked up with training partners you match up well with,” said Glenn. “Everyone has certain coaches they get time with. I feel like I’m acclimated and am part of the team. It’s a super awesome group of people.

“We’re all helping each other out in one way or another. It’s been fun. It’s been good preparing together.”

For his first bout of 2018, Glenn (20-5-1) takes on fellow veteran Dennis Bermudez (16-8) in a preliminary 145-pound at UFC Fight Night 133 on Saturday in Boise, Idaho.

“He’s coming to bring it,” Glenn said of Bermudez. “He’s not going to run. I wanted anyone to get on this this card. I’m excited to get back in there against a top veteran. He’s been around for a while, so I’m excited to fight someone like him.

“I’ve gotten to work on a lot of my weaknesses in my time off. I feel I’ve developed better as a fighter. I should be much sharper on July 14.”

Not one to look to far ahead, Glenn is focused on his bout with Bermudez, and whatever comes after that he’ll deal with when it arrives.

“We’ll just take it fight by fight and re-asses things and go from there,” said Glenn.

Chad Mendes: ‘It’s the Perfect Time for Me to Come Back’ After Two Years Away      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Chad Mendes knows he has what it takes to be a champion.

The veteran UFC featherweight has competed for gold in the promotion on three separate occasions — twice against Jose Aldo and a third time opposite Conor McGregor on short notice — but he hasn't had that title wrapped around his waist just yet.

Following his loss to McGregor back in 2015, Mendes probably should have taken some much needed time off considering the rigorous schedule he was keeping.

Mendes engaged in an absolute war with Aldo back in 2014 before knocking out Ricardo Lamas to put himself into position to face the outspoken Irishman on two weeks notice. Unfortunately, Mendes ran out of gas and suffered a TKO loss but he was anxious to get back into the cage to wash the bad taste of defeat from his mouth.

Sadly, Mendes' rush to return to the win column backfired when he suffered a knockout loss to Frankie Edgar five months later.

At that point, Mendes was resigned to taking a year off from competition to finally allow his body and mind to heal after punishing himself for too long without any kind of real break in the action.

"As fighters, everybody has that mentality of just go, go, go and the same with the wrestling mentality. There were multiple times during my wrestling career where I probably should have sat out a weekend but it was always push, go, push, go. Same thing in the fight world," Mendes explained when speaking to MMAWeekly. "You get offered a fight, you take it. Especially as big a fight as it was with Frankie [Edgar]. I had just finished the Conor [McGregor] fight, which was a huge fight and it's just tough to turn those things down.

"I probably should have taken a little more time. Nothing I can do about it now but move forward and try to learn from those experiences."

Mendes informed the UFC of his intention to take time off but then the bottom fell out from under him in a way he never expected it to happen.

Mendes was flagged for a doping violation by USADA in June 2016 and ultimately suspended for two years for the infraction.

After his drug test came back positive, Mendes figured out rather quickly that a cream he was using to treat his psoriasis contained the banned substance that was flagged by USADA. Rather than make excuses or try to lie his way out of the situation, Mendes owned it and accepted the penalty for his mistake.

Of course Mendes never wants to be labeled as a cheater considering his dedication to doing things the right way his entire life, including being drug tested throughout his career as both a wrestler and a fighter. Still, Mendes is ready to put the past behind him and focus on getting his career back on track when he fights this Saturday in Boise, Idaho against Myles Jury.

"I was so frustrated with where I was, it was embarrassing as hell, I wasn't trying to do anything, I was already taking a year off so I wasn't even trying to fight it," Mendes said about his punishment.

"I think because I didn't fight it, that pissed off a lot of people, too. Ultimately, it comes down to I am innocent and that's why I'm not fighting it. I'm admitted yes I was taking this but I didn't know what was in it. I just want to move forward and fight hard. I'm working my ass off. I've been putting in the time and the work to be a champion. I'm here doing what I'm supposed to do."

If there was a positive side to the time off it's that Mendes has finally been able to allow his body to heal in a way he's never experienced before.

Considering Mendes has been competing as an athlete since he was four years old and wrestling since he was just five years of age, he never really took any time off for the better part of 25 years.

That's a lot of wear and tear to put on a body so Mendes was thankful that he was finally able to rest and recharge his batteries before preparing for his comeback this weekend.

"I've been able to let my body just rest and heal and recoup and it's been great," Mendes said. "I feel recharged and I feel excited to get back in there. I feel motivated in the gym. It's been great."

Perhaps the best part about the timing of Mendes' return to action is that he's still considered one of the top featherweights in the sport and he's got plenty of potential matchups awaiting him in the division.

Mendes has never had the opportunity to face off with current champion Max Holloway and No. 1 ranked contender Brian Ortega was only two fights into his UFC career when the Team Alpha Male fighter last competed.

While his focus remains solely on Jury for now, Mendes can't wait to test himself against anybody at the top of the featherweight division as he looks to reclaim his spot as the No. 1 contender in the world.

"I'm super excited to get back in there. Hopefully I win a fight or two and I'm right back where I left. I've got to focus on Myles right now. He's a tough dude and that's the task at hand," Mendes said.

"I honestly believe a lot of these guys have their weaknesses and their weaknesses fall right into my strengths. I think it's a perfect time for me to come back. Being able to take that time off and then coming back strong now, I think it's just perfect timing for me. I'm just excited to start fighting these guys."

Boise City Council Wrestles With Proposed Dockless Bike-Share Rules      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Anxieties about dockless bike-shares came to the fore as the Boise City Council heard from staff about possible fee schedules and limits on the number of bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters that could be deployed on city streets. As dockless bike-share companies eye Boise as a possible new market for their bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters, the Boise City Council got an update July 10 on the governmental tools it has at its disposal to help manage what could be the biggest influx of bikes on city streets in its history. Those tools, according to city Comprehensive Planning Manager Daren Fluke, consist of licensing and franchise agreements, limitations on the kinds of devices it will allow on streets and sidewalks, and speed restrictions. Fluke presented the council with a proposed fee schedule of a $200 initial application fee ($100 for later filings), a $10-per-device fee, an additional $20 security deposit for each device, a $100 abatement fee per abatement per device, and a $5-per-day fee for any storage services. Council President Lauren McLean leaned toward possibly steeper costs aimed at for-profit bike-share businesses, saying the proposed fee schedule may not be commensurate with costs that may be borne by the city. She urged staff to come up with a ballpark figure for the cost to the city to keep devices free from the right of way. "It would seem to me that the fees proposed aren't commensurate with the level of concern you've brought to us, and one could make the case that that a $20,000 licensing fee would cover the cost of administering a program and the enforcement of a program that you and others have concerns about." There was also concern about how many bikes, e-bikes and e-scooters will be allowed into Boise, and members of the council were wary of companies entering the city with thousands of devices. During its initial presentation, LimeBike representatives said they would need to deploy at least 750 units to make doing business in Boise worth its while, but council members McLean, Elaine Clegg and Scot Ludwig indicated they would be comfortable with a lower number. They were, nevertheless, hopeful they would be able to craft ordinances that would protect the city while allowing dockless bike-shares to thrive. "My fear is, we don't know about this stuff," McLean said. "If we archaically choose to do something because we don't like the idea of scooters on sidewalks or are more comfortable with bikes because, honestly, that's what we know, are we setting them up for a program that fails and nobody's happy at all?" Staff said they would reach out to the bike-shares that…
Neckar Coffee Opens Long-awaited Brick and Mortar in Downtown Boise      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
Neckar is open 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays, and 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Sundays. Though it's been open since July 4, Neckar Coffee's brick-and-mortar location in downtown Boise still feels like something of a secret. The entrance on 10th Street between Main and Grove streets is unmarked (signage should arrive in the next few weeks), the road is closed down and fencing for the construction project next door crisscrosses the sidewalk. Yet despite those literal roadblocks, the line of customers on opening day spilled out into the street. "It was packed," said Neckar owner Grant Shealy. "I had no expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that we had a line out the door ... It was very cool to see Boise show up like that. It means we've got to get our act together and make sure we're providing, because people want it." Word about the opening went out by word-of-mouth and on social media, pulling in the fanbase that the coffee company has amassed over five years of slinging artisan joe—including pour overs, lattes, cortados and more made from beans sourced by the Oakland, California-based company Coffee Shrub—from its mobile station at the Boise Farmers Market. Shealy called the market Neckar's "bread and butter," and said he hopes to continue to have a presence there, even with the new and long-sought storefront. "We started with the intent of being in a brick and mortar, [but] we didn't want to do it before we were ready," he said. Stepping inside the softly lit coffee shop, it seems clear the spot was worth the wait. Everything from the decor (sleek and modern) to the cupware (handmade by Guten Co. in San Antonio, Texas) to the pastries (baked fresh daily at local hotspot Janjou Patisserie) speaks to Shealy's long-held vision for the space. The pastries are, as Shealy put it, "a big deal"—Neckar is the only spot in town besides Janjou itself to offer croissants, muffins and other artisan treats made by local James Beard-nominated baker Moshit Mizrachi-Gabbitas. Shealy said he considers himself lucky to be "somebody [Mizrachi-Gabbitas] trusts to show her product the way she intends it to be shown," and lovingly displays the day's offerings on a wooden cutting board, like jewelry in a velvet-lined box. Neckar also offers affogatos and a yogurt bowl topped with housemade granola, strawberry balsamic compote and fig brittle. In the near future, donuts fried on-site will also make an appearance on the menu. Although the prices are higher…

Twilight Criterium Returns to Boise With 'Twilight Trifecta' Kickoff Event      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
The Twilight Trifecta will pump riders and fans up for the next day's cycling action with activities at JUMP from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, July 13. Lynn Hightower, executive director of the Downtown Boise Association, knows how important cycling is to Boise culture. “There are so many people in Boise who bike all different places for all different reasons. From mountain biking in the foothills, to road biking as a commuter, to just riding on the Greenbelt. Boiseans love riding bikes,” Hightower said. “I think after 32 years, the Twilight Criterium can take a little credit for that.” The annual Twilight Criterium features over 350 of the world’s top athletes racing at speeds around 30 miles per hour within feet of cheering spectators. “From a fan experience, you’d be able to actually see the expressions on their faces that show their intense competitive spirit, their desire to win and their endurance through what literally can be an agonizing feat for them,” Hightower said. The race takes place Saturday, July 14, starting with the Kid’s Ride with Boisean and two-time Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong at 1 p.m. Amateur races will follow at 1:45 p.m., and then the opening ceremony at 6:50 p.m. will kick off the pro men’s and women’s races. The event ends with a 10 p.m. awards ceremony at the finish line. The Friday before the race, there will be a new event to pump riders and fans up for the action at JUMP from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. It starts with a racer meet-and-greet, where fans have the opportunity to say hello their favorite racers and have Twilight Trifecta posters signed by the cyclists. This will be followed by the ceremony to crown the winners of a separate event, the Chrono Kristin Armstrong race, which will take place that morning in Star. Also at JUMP, free french fries will be offered in honor of National French Fry Day. Additionally, highlights from the 2017 Twilight Criterium will play on a big-screen outdoor television. “I think it’s just going to be a great opportunity for people to get totally psyched about the Twilight experience the next day,” Hightower said. The pro races will be live streamed on the USA Cycling website, usacycling.org, for a fee of $15 for those who can't make it downtown. “Last year there were more than 7,000 people who watched the race worldwide [on the livestream],” Hightower said. “So it’s definitely of interest.” Hightower said the Twilight Criterium promotes cycling—as well as the city of Boise. “The riders say…
