Snakes on a plane? Not today.

TSA agents in Miami intercepted an attempt at smuggling a live python onto a plane on Sunday. In an pun-filled Instagram post, the TSA detailed how a passenger tried to get a ball python from Miami to Barbados by tucking it into an external hard drive.

Snakes on Barbados are actually quite rare, so an invasive species such as a ball python could cause serious damage to the local ecosystem.

The python didn't manage to Slytherin to the plane.

Introducing Fraction/al From the Founders of CoinLaunch      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

BARBADOS / ACCESSWIRE / July 10, 2018 / The founders of CoinLaunch have launched Fraction/al - a new brand focused on the creation, exchange and management of fractional high-value, illiquid assets using blockchain technology. Using their fully functioning platform, Fraction/al tokenizes existing asset-backed securities for partners and clients preparing them for public offering.

"The reality is that the majority of utility and security token offerings are nothing more than a good idea and a white paper. After seeing this up close over the past year, we came to the conclusion that the greater opportunity isn't just in hypothetical businesses, but real-world assets." - Reuven Cohen, Co-Founder

Fraction/al's goal is to use modern blockchain-based technology to unlock a vast world of assets that were previously inaccessible, with an initial focus on fractional ownership of professional sports teams, real estate, corporate equities, debt, commodities and other financial derivatives. Though these items may have inherent value, the marketplace in which they are sold often have few buyers, in comparison to those interested in the purchase of more liquid assets.

Fractionalizing high-value assets, making them more liquid, has two major advantages focused on market accessibility.

If you are the owner of a high-valued asset, such as a pro sports team, the market to find a buyer is very limited. By fractionalizing your ownership in the team, you create a much larger market for your offering, making your asset more liquid. From the buyer's perspective, high-value assets that were once out of reach, like ownership in your favorite pro football team, are now far more accessible. For investment purposes, it also allows you to more easily diversify your funds across multiple high-value liquid assets.

"We are not promising to offer these services tomorrow, we are already providing these services today, because we believe that a more open and accessible market will increase the long-term health of our financial markets." - Randy Clemens, Co-Founder

In just a few years, the market for blockchain-based assets has gone from literally nothing into a more than $6 billion industry in the first three months of 2018. The industry is expected to be worth $690 billion in the next five years. The market for illiquid assets is potentially a multi-trillion-dollar market, as the global private equity market alone is a $4 trillion market. With a fully functioning end-to-end platform, Fraction/al has already helped raise over $50 million for their clients in the last two months alone, before officially introducing themselves to the rest of the world.

Man tried to bring python on plane by hiding it inside a computer hard drive      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

A man tried to bring a python onto a plane in Miami by hiding it inside a hard drive, according to a news report. He and the snake did not make the flight that was headed to Barbados, authorities said.

The incident unfolded Sunday at a screening area of the Miami International Airport. An article in the Miami Herald said Transportation Security Administration officers found the snake inside a piece of checked luggage when a TSA security officer noticed something odd.

Officials did not tell the Herald how big the snake was, why the man said he had the snake and what airline was involved.

Sari Koshetz, a spokeswoman for the TSA, told the newspaper that a bomb expert then examined the bag and found the python – still alive – in the hard drive.

In a Twitter message, Koshetz wrote that the snake was “artfully concealed” inside the hard drive.

“This organic mass was not explosive,” she wrote, “but it shows you can’t hide any threat from us.”

The snake, Koshetz told the paper, was “obviously not an imminent terrorist threat.” Koshetz told the Herald that the snake was a “possible wildlife threat” on a plane. Animals have gotten out on a plane and have been known to “chew through wires with fatal results,” Koshetz said to the Herald.

The snake was taken into custody by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the man was fined.

Authorities did not release the man’s name.

There have been other incidents of passengers trying to get animals through airport security checkpoints.

One man strapped snakes and turtles to his body and tried to get past a security checkpoint at the Miami airport, and a woman once hid a snake in her bra at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, according to the Herald.

The Herald said the animals were confiscated before they made it onto a plane.

Exhibit:

A display of Sailor’s Valentines created by Cape Cod native Gregg Roberts will be on display at the Woods Hole Public Library throughout the month of July during the Library’s normal open hours. Based on an historic maritime craft, the pieces are made entirely of shells, most found in the Caribbean.

Later in the month, Mr. Roberts will talk at the Library about his work. In the meantime, the Valentines on display will be for sale, as are postcards of his other works.

For more information visit www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org.

Talk:

Cape Cod native and Sailor’s Valentine award winning artist, Gregg Roberts, will speak at the Woods Hole Public Library at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, July 18. He is a singer, poet and self-taught artisan and resides, teaches and maintains a studio in the seaside village of Cotuit. The studio includes an immense collection of shells and nautical memorabilia used in the creation of his distinctive works, serves as a gallery of Gregg’s existing Sailor’s Valentines, and houses his instructional classes.

Gregg created his first Sailor’s Valentine in 1984 following an inspirational recollection of seeing a Sailor’s Valentine on a childhood trip to the maritime museum at the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut.  From the beginning, his distinctive artistry became apparent as Gregg incorporated his knowledge of knot tying into the traditional shell- based style of Barbados.

Recognition of his talent followed quickly as Gregg participated in the Sanibel Shell Show, the oldest and most prestigious shell-craft competition. He won prizes there in the professional sailor’s valentine and jewelry categories. He also has been recognized as one of the country’s most prominent Sailor’s Valentine artists by Grace L. Madeira in her book, Sailors’ Valentines…Their Journey Through Time in which six of his pieces are featured.

Examples of Gregg Roberts’ Sailor’s Valentines can be found at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod where Gregg lectures and holds classes for novice artisans and at Roger Williams University in Bristol, RI.  The commissioned Sailor’s Valentine, “The Bristol Piece”, hangs in the University’s Global Heritage Hall and is believed to be the world’s largest Sailor’s Valentines measuring 48 inches in diameter.

Gregg Roberts’ Sailor’s Valentines are frequently included in art, maritime history and lifestyle publications most recently in the January, 2018 issue of Cape Cod Magazine.

All are invited to this free illustrated talk. A concurrent exhibit of his Sailors’ Valentines is on view upstairs in the Library. For more information, visit the Library’s website www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org.

Unique selling point #4: women’s empowerment

T&T opens with big win      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

T&T Under-17 cricketers opened the defence of their Cricket West Indies (CWI) Regional U-17 title, with a crushing win over Barbados in the opening round at the Brian Lara Academy in Tarouba.

Led by brilliant batting from Leonardo Julien and excellent spin bowling from Samir Ali, the T&T boys ran away winners by 154 runs.

Batting first, the two-time defending champions got 83 from Julien to post a competitive 250 for eight off their 50 overs. Barbados had no answers to the T&T slow bowlers and Ali picked up 3/13, as they crashed to 96 all out.

Julien, the Merryboys left-hander, was in fine form from the moment he went to the crease and took charge of proceedings. He and Tariq Mohammed posted 60 runs for the second wicket before Mohammed left for 31.

Julien battled on and posted his half-century. He found an able partner in Rivaldo Ramlogan and they shared 82 runs for the fifth wicket. When Julien departed for 83, he had faced only 115 balls in 158 minutes of batting, striking six fours and three sixes.

Ramlogan scored a quickfire 57 off just 49 balls with two fours and three sixes. Towards the end, Isaiah Gomez made 22 not out from 17 balls. The pick of the bowlers for Barbados was Mathew Forde who took 2/37.

When Barbados batted it failed to forge any meaningful partnerships and this crippled its reply. Opener Rashawn Worrell hit a top score of 19. Apart from Ali, fellow spinner Anderson Mahase took 2/25. Ramlogan, Jaden Seales, Gomez and Nicholas Ali each took one wicket.

In other matches, the Leeward Islands defeated Jamaica by one wicket at Gilbert Park in California. Batting first the Jamaicans made only 137 all out and the Leewards, although losing wickets regularly, made 139/9 in reply.

Across at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, Windward Islands signed on with a thumping 59-run victory over Guyana. The Windwards made 284/8 and Guyana stumbled to 225 all out.

CSME implementation on fast track      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

KINGSTON, Jamaica—Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) have put measures in place to fast-track the full implementation of the Caricom Single Market and Economy (CSME).

Among the strategies is a special meeting of Caricom Heads to focus solely on the CSME, to be held in T&T in November.

Caricom Chairman, Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness, added that the Prime Ministerial Sub-Committee on the CSME will now have quarterly meetings beginning in September in Barbados, which will be hosted by Prime Minister Mia Mottley “to give urgency to the implementation process.”

He further noted that Government leaders also put greater focus on advancing those areas that would help to create enabling support measures for a competitive Single Market.

These include an investment policy and investment code, an incentive regime, an integrated capital market and securities legislation.

“As leaders, we expect that these matters will be ready for full adoption at the 40th meeting of (Caricom Heads of Government) in July 2019.These mechanisms will enable strong support measures for a successful CSME,” Holness said.

He also stressed the Heads’ recommitment to making the mechanisms within Caricom work, by taking decisive action.

“I am resolved as the Chair to ensure that we take action. We must get things done to make a difference. We are resolved to now begin to implement the decisions we take to improve the perceptions, especially amongst our youth,” he said.

The CSME is an integrated development strategy that is intended to benefit the people of the region by providing more and better opportunities to produce and sell goods and services and to attract investments.

It is built on five core regimes – free movement of capital, free movement of goods, free movement of skills, the provision of services, and the right of establishment. In addition, the CSME facilitates hassle-free travel for all Caricom nationals. (CMC)

Beacon retains its good ratings      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Caribbean Information & Credit Rating Services Ltd (CariCRIS) has reaffirmed its issuer ratings of CariA- on the regional rating scale, and ttA- on national scale of The Beacon Insurance Company Limited (Beacon).

These ratings indicate that the company’s level of creditworthiness is good. CariCRIS has also reaffirmed the company’s financial strength rating of CariA-, which indicates that its relative ability to meet its ongoing insurance obligations is good.

However, the agency maintained a negative outlook on the Beacon ratings due to the prevailing economic challenges in its main market, T&T, and to some extent Barbados, which could negatively impact profitability over the next 12-15 months.

CariCRIS said in a media release: “Beacon’s ratings reflect its good asset quality and well-diversified investment portfolio, as well as its prudent risk management practices evidenced by healthy capitalization and solvency ratios.

“The ratings are further supported by the company’s good financial performance, notwithstanding reduced profitability levels. These rating strengths are tempered by the company’s high product and client concentration risks.

“Additionally, prevailing economic and foreign exchange challenges in T&T and weak economic conditions in Barbados could constrain the company’s profitability within the next 12 months.”

Heed IMF’s exchange rate advice      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache

Senior economist Dr Ronald Ramkissoon says there are aspects of the latest International Monetary Fund (IMF) report that T&T must to pay particular attention to for the country to move forward. He said the report recommends certain actions regarding the budget deficit and the exchange rate.

“We also need to pay particular attention to what are the downside risks. The forecast is for marginal growth going forward which is understandable given what is likely to happen in respect of the increase in natural gas production and the impact in revenues and the impact on the non-energy sector,” he said.

“But really what it is doing is bringing us back to same old same old and to the hope that we will not have a significant decline in energy prices or production again.”

The IMF said T&T’s economy has revealed signs of improvement driven by energy sector growth from the second half of 2017. It also noted significant progress by Government in implementing fiscal consolidation and improved data collection.

Ramkissoon said T&T should be tired of “this roller coaster ride” .

“After close to 60 years we should as a country, policy makers and as citizens be tired of this roller coaster ride and we should see that this marginal growth, while positive, will not make a major dent on some of the problems that are affecting us,” he said.

He said there has been a general consistency in the IMF reports which should receive far more attention, particularly the fundamental changes T&T needs to make.

Zeroing in on the foreign exchange rate Ramkissoon said: “If we went to maintain an exchange rate along the lines that we have been maintaining it for the last few years then we have to do much better on the expenditure side and on the fiscal side.

“What we are in effect saying is that this managed rate . . . we are comfortable more or less with where it is. If that is the case then we need to tighten the fiscal aspect and begin to generating surpluses.”

Ramkissoon added that the market therefore must be “flooded” with foreign reserves to avoid long lines.

He said if T&T wants to maintain the nominal exchange rate where it is, there are other things which must be done.

Citing Barbados as an example he explained: “Barbados wanted to maintain a fixed exchange rate but did not want to do the complementary things you had to do with it which was to cut expenditures drastically to bring the fiscal accounts in line so that it will not put pressure on the exchange rate.

“We cannot have our cake and eat it and that comes out clearly in the IMF’s report.”

Unlike the horror film - "Snakes on a Plane" - one slithering python didn't get to board an aircraft at Miami International Airport on Sunday. According to the Transportation Security Administration, officers found a python inside an external hard drive hidden inside a piece of luggage that was headed for Barbados. "The snake, that didn't get on a plane thanks to our officers' diligent screening, had been artfully concealed inside the electronics of a hard drive and placed in a checked bag headed for a flight to Barbados," TSA spokeswoman, Sari Koshetz, told the Miami Herald Monday. "Upon the TSA officer's discovery of the organic mass, one of our TSA bomb experts was called into the baggage screening room to investigate the innards of the hard drive and that is when he discovered the mass was a live snake," Koshetz added.

This baby python hissed to come out of a box while boarding a plane      Cache   Translate Page   Web Page Cache
A snake that was reportedly shoved inside what appears like a computer case chose to hiss and slither.

Apparently the person responsible for forcing the snake, yet to be revealed, had tried to sneak the reptile past the security at Miami Airport, and travel to Barbados, West Indies.

By the time the computer unit arrived at a screening area, security administrators found something amiss. According to the Miami Herald, that reported this news, a bomb expert was called in to check the device.

And upon opening the case, a baby python snake identified was found "artfully concealed".

Sari Koshetz, a spokeswoman for the Transportation and Security Administration, a department that looks after security at airports was quoted in a report saying, "This organic mass was not explosive, but it shows you can't hide any threat from us."

Koshetz added that even though the snake was inside the electronic device , it had been wound inside a nylon stocking. "It was obviously not an imminent terrorist threat to the traveling public," but its interception helped stop a potential wildlife threat she was quoted as explaining.

"Animals of many species have been known to escape and chew through wires with fatal results," Koshetz added.

Authorities have not released the person's name, but have been reported of levying a fine. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service meanwhile has taken custody of this slithering reptile, and it is expected to be released to its natural habitat.

In a post on Instagram, the Miami Airport said,"Agent Neville Flynn would be extremely proud of our officers at the Miami International Airport (MIA). You see, Agent Flynn has HAD IT with snakes on planes, and our officers prevented a young Ball Python from flying the friendly skies this past Sunday. ... "

"A traveler on her way to the Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) in Barbados attempted to smuggle the snakelet inside of an external hard drive packed in her checked bag. If you think airplane seats can feel constricting, imagine how this little guy felt! Talk about bad memories! … While the python itself posed no danger to anyone on the aircraft, an organic item concealed inside electronics raises security concerns, which is why our officers took a closer look. … "

"The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service ( @USFWS ) was notified. They responded and took possession of the snake and cited the traveler. Both the traveler and the snake missed their flight. … Conversationally, this python had not gone full monty. It was wearing a nylon stocking. … #SnakesOnPlane #SnakesAlmostOnAPlane #MIA #BGI #Miami #Barbados"

The Miami airport was also in the news recently, with a traveler strapping snakes and turtles to his body. The traveler thought with the reptiles stuck to his body, he could evade a security checkpoint. In another case reported from the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, the Herald, reported a woman as concealing a snake in her bra. In both cases, the reptiles were rescued before the plane departed.

Cases of reptiles and animals being smuggled via the airlines is nothing new. Two men were arrested in 2016 by Mumbai customs for smuggling 199 endangered tortoises in four check in bags to the UAE. The Mumbai Customs department during its interrogation found that the arrested men had bought the endangered species from an animal trader at Crawford Market.
