Climate protesters gathered around a boat at Oxford Circus during a coordinated protest by the Extinction Rebellion group in April.
The movement uses a circled hourglass, known as the extinction symbol, to serve as a warning that time is rapidly running out for many species. From rebellion.earth:
Since its launch, XR has quickly gained national and international following, taking it to the streets in mass demonstrations, demanding immediate action from their national parliaments and governments.
For their branding, the organization uses a custom, rounded version of Futura Condensed named Fucxed. Initially used in lowercase for the XR logo, a caps-only version is used across the globe on banners, websites and social media. In comparison to other recent peoples movements such as the (anti-)Brexit protests, or the Women’s Marches, there is a remarkably uniform and consistent branding in the messages from Extinction Rebellion in outlets from social media to worldwide demonstrations.

In June 2019, XR published an activist handbook with Penguin Books: “This is a book of truth and action. It has facts to arm you, stories to empower you, pages to fill in and pages to rip out, alongside instructions on how to rebel – from organising a roadblock to facing arrest.” Note the clever use of the (suggestedly extinct) publisher’s logo penguin as a cover illustration.

On a trip to Ottawa, a few years ago, I got to tour the offices of the e-commerce company Shopify, courtesy of a friend of mine I was visiting who works there. Shopify makes and updates a platform over 800,000 online stores from around the globe use to sell their products, which in 2018 amounted to around $41.1 billion in sales. I remember the workplace looking immaculate and like a fun and exciting place to be. My friend, whose “discipline” at the company is user experience, said he’d been loving it. Shopify has a culture of constant and constructive feedback—posters on the walls say, “Feedback is a gift”—and annual in-company conferences offer employees opportunities to level-up their skills or learn new ones related to their work. He knows that his growth and development matter to the company and, as a result, he feels not only a strong sense of identity and purpose, but also autonomy. He, like many of his coworkers in the R&D department, are given space to make their own decisions when it comes to completing tasks managers assign. It’s a consequence, among other things, of the company taking seriously the thesis of Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, a book that’s visible on hallway bookshelves. When I told my friend recently that one of Shopify’s executives, Toby Shannon, the company’s chief support officer, would be part of an Ethical Systems panel on how evolutionary thinking could foster more ethical and effective cultures, he said he wasn’t surprised. Shannon, he told me, often gives inspiring talks that weave in ideas from psychology and anthropology.
Well, on a recent evening at NYU’s Stern School of Business, it was a pleasure of mine to attend that panel. Shannon was part of a fascinating discussion with evolutionary anthropologist David Sloan Wilson, co-author most recently of Prosocial: Using Evolutionary Science to Build Productive, Equitable, and Collaborative Groups, and Theranos-whistleblower Erika Cheung, who just launched Ethics in Entrepreneurship, a nonprofit dedicated to instilling ethical culture in startups. The conversation revolved around what Wilson called the “core design principles” of effective groups—businesses included—which he, along with social scientist Michael Cox and political economist Elinor Ostrom, elucidated in a 2013 paper in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization. Wilson explained that the principles, of which there are eight, emerge from the evolutionary dynamics of cooperation in our own species and others.
In his introductory remarks, Wilson did his best to briefly illustrate those dynamics —otherwise called “multilevel selection”—using the classic board game Monopoly. As opposed to the usual self-centered tactics you use when you’re playing for yourself, imagine, he said, playing in a Monopoly tournament, where you’re on a team, with teammates playing simultaneously on other boards, and real-estate holdings synced across games: In this set-up, winning would require you to adopt almost entirely different tactics from solo play. You couldn’t play for yourself and expect your team to win. You’d have to cooperate, basing your play on the state of other boards in the tournament. As a result, it’s no coincidence that, when you glance at the list of core design principles for effective groups, the items look commonsensical and moral: We’re social beings, evolved to rely not only on our own wits but on those of others. Ask yourself, if you were on a team, would you want these principles to be firmly in place?
Shannon himself wants to apply this paradigm in his work shaping Shopify’s organizational culture, having been an aficionado of evolutionary thinking after reading books like Consilience: The Unity of Knowledge, by biologist E.O. Wilson. But of course it is a challenge keeping a rapidly expanding business and employee population running effectively while keeping merchants happy with a critical piece of their infrastructure. He took to heart anthropological observations, across various domains, concerning the optimal size of working groups, which usually consist of five to 12 people—think juries, sports teams, military squads. The goal from the beginning, he said, was to “build a 100-year organization,” which meant not feeling beholden to traditional (short-term financial) metrics of business success. For example, he said, “There’s nothing in the physics of capitalism that requires a quarterly focus.” He was told that Shopify’s plan—to have users of its online-store platform profit more than Shopify itself—was unwise. He disagrees. Having Shopify’s users—as well as developers who add features on top of Shopify’s platform—take top profits, his reasoning goes, benefits the ecosystem in which Shopify operates, ensuring the company’s importance and longevity. Shannon said that he championed a sort of evolutionary aphorism: “Selfishness beats altruism within groups, but altruism beats selfishness among or between groups”—a bit of wisdom he took from Consilience.
Cheung said that Theranos actually had some of the core design principles in place, notably the first—strong group identity and a sense of purpose. This is what galvanized investors and the media and so many employees like herself, who cared deeply about patients and wanted to improve their health outcomes along with the cost of healthcare. Theranos’ mission, taken at face value, was a good one, and Cheung was committed to realizing it. But the principles it lacked lead to its undoing—specifically fair and inclusive decision making. “The healthcare portion of the company’s voice wasn’t heard,” she said. When they’d raise issues with the product, or process, they “were siloed, spied on.”
One of the problems that Cheung wants to address is the tendency among startups, as they scale from, say, five to 400 employees in two years, to inadvertently shed their initial identity or culture to the company’s detriment. She asked Wilson how one might harness cultural evolutionary processes to avoid this predicament. He said neither a laissez faire nor a centralized planning approach works. “The experimental process does,” he said. Best practices are often stumbled on by happenstance. It means you have to be evolutionary, iterative, and humble about solutions. His best guess is that, as a company rapidly scales, it has to add structure—formalize the aspects of its culture it wants to keep—to stay the same. “Being mindful of that is part of the solution,” he said. “Left unmanaged, evolution will take us where we don’t want to go.”
Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, Ethical Systems’ founder, who was moderating the discussion, picked up on that thread. “Ethical systems wasn’t founded on evolutionary ideas,” he said, “but it’s been implicit in our experimental ethos.” For a business’ culture to be guided or informed by behavioral science means being willing, even eager, to try new things.
The video of our discussion with David Sloan Wilson, Erika Cheung, and Toby Shannon will be available for viewing soon—stay tuned!

At 1Password, we aim to make the online world a better, safer place. But climate change is the biggest threat to the future of our planet, and we want to make a difference there too. That’s why we chose to sponsor the Climate Fixathon.
The Climate Fixathon is the world’s first online hackathon for makers to help fix the climate. If you’re not familiar, a hackathon is a coding competition, usually held over a set period. People come together to test their skills to solve a particular problem or just create something great. The Climate Fixathon is a 4-week competition, held entirely online.
As someone who cares deeply about our planet, (last year, I embarked on a 24-day expedition for marine conservation) I was thrilled to be one of the judges. Reviewing and testing the 43 projects from across the globe was eye-opening. It was exciting to see the tech community come together to create websites, apps, and services that aim to help restore a safe climate for our planet. Technology is a powerful force for doing good.
There were three categories: Awareness, Action, and Facilitation. On offer was $1,500 for the winning team of each category. As you’d expect, the standard of entries was incredibly high across the board, but there were a few that impressed me in particular.
HQ→CO2 was chosen as the project that best raises awareness of climate breakdown. The website juxtaposes random pairs of images: the headquarters of high-emissions fossil fuel companies with places around the world affected by global warming. It was thought-provoking to see how the HQ pictures appear static and unchanging, while the picture alongside shows dynamic ecological breakdown.
Also recognised by the judges was Climate 365, an email service that repeatedly contacts those in power urging them to take action against climate change. Their tool for digital protest won the prize for Action. The prize for Facilitation was awarded to Trip to Carbon, a carbon footprint calculator with simple API that can be integrated into new and existing websites and products to raise awareness of climate change.
Another favourite of mine was the Arctic Calculator. You enter the distance travelled and it gives you the area of the Arctic circle you’re responsible for melting. Certainly difficult to ignore. Shift was another great website that everyone can use to make a difference. It tells when grid production in your area is at its least carbon-intense, so that you can time your household electricity consumption, like putting the washing machine on.
All exciting and impactful projects that are sure to inspire change. It’s certainly sparked some food for thought about how we do things at 1Password.
To learn more about all of the entries, visit the Climate Fixathon website. Perhaps it will inspire a project of your own! You can also find out more about my motivations for taking part in my judge’s interview.
The Atrix HD was one of my favorite phones last year. It was easy to hold and use, had a great screen, and handled everything I threw at it really well. It's now launching on the Nextel network in Mexico, with Jelly Bean and a new push to talk / direct connect service.
Motorola ATRIX HD combines cutting-edge smartradio technology with PRIP Nextel’s new radio service that offers instantaneous high-performance communication using a software based solution integrated with Nextel’s wireless network. Users can enjoy direct connect with anyone, anywhere across the globe by making direct communication calls via Nextel Evolution Network, Wi-Fi or roaming. In addition, the unique PRIP service keeps users connected through Nextel Evolution, the fastest voice and Internet network in the market.
This new PRIP service is also fully backwards compatible with previous IDEN PTT services from Nextel and Sprint. We don't yet have a date or price, but Nextel Mexico has an expan...|

The Trump Regime sued Edward Snowden and publishers of his new memoir titled “Permanent Record.” More on this below.
Exposing government wrongdoing is a noble act. Like dissent, it’s a high form of patriotism, warranting praise, not persecution and condemnation.
The 1989 US Whistleblower Protection Act protects federal employees who report misconduct.
Federal agencies are prohibited from retaliating against individuals who do the right thing. Yet it happens time and again.
Whistleblowers may report law or regulatory violations, gross mismanagement, waste, fraud and/or abuse, or acts endangering public health or safety.
The FBI is exempt from WPA provisions. Instead of protecting the rights of whistleblowers, the agency targets them.
Since WPA’s 1994 revisions, it ruled on over 200 cases — only three times in favor of whistleblowers, the deck stacked against them. US law fails to protect them, circumvented by its police state apparatus.
The 2012 Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act (WPEA) failed to protect government employees from reprisal for disclosing official misconduct, revealing it to co-workers or supervisors, or disclosing policy decision consequences — any or all of the above in relation to their jobs or duties.
The Obama regime prosecuted more whistleblowers and leakers involved in exposing US wrongdoing than all his predecessors combined, nine targeted individuals, Trump following the same repressive practice, wanting US dirty linen concealed.
The US is a surveillance state. Big Brother watches everyone, privacy virtually nonexistent, including our health and financial records, cellphone and email communications, everything posted on social media, along with workplace and other public areas surveilled.
Exposing government wrongdoing is hazardous to personal safety and welfare. Julian Assange is imprisoned in London at the behest of the Trump regime — for the “high crime” of truth-telling journalism the way it should be universally.
Courageous whistleblower Chelsea Manning spent years in prison for revealing US high crimes of war and against humanity in Afghanistan and Iraq — imprisoned again indefinitely for refusing to aid the Trump regime’s lynching of Assange.
Granted asylum in Russia, a noble gesture, Edward Snowden was luckier. He followed in the footsteps of Daniel Ellsberg and likeminded others, connecting the dots for countless millions to know how they’re illegally and repressively spied on.
Earlier he said “I really want the focus to be on (documents revealed) which I hope will trigger among citizens around the globe what kind of world we want to live in.”
Enactment of the USA Freedom Act (the renamed Patriot Act) did little to change things. US spy agencies continue trampling on Bill of Rights protections.
They compromise due process, habeas rights, free expression, assembly and association, as well as protection from unreasonable searches and seizures.
Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, YouTube, Apple, and major telecommunications companies are complicit in spying on their customers for US dark forces.
US intelligence community spying targets friends and foes alike. It’s for total control, political and economic advantage, to be one up on foreign competitors —information used advantageously in trade, geopolitical, and military relations.
Domestic spying is longstanding. It has nothing to do with protecting national security. America’s only foreign, domestic, or terrorists threats are invented.
The Trump regimes Justice Department sued Snowden and three publishers of his memoir — MacMillan Publishers, Henry Holt and Co., and Holtzbrinck Publishers.
The repressive suit aims to freeze assets from book sales. US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia G. Zachary Terwilliger said the following:
“Intelligence information should protect our nation, not provide personal profit (sic). This lawsuit will ensure that Edward Snowden receives no monetary benefits from breaching the trust placed in him (sic).”
The lawsuit is the latest example of Washington’s assault on speech, media and academic freedoms, targeting what diverges from the official narrative on major issues.
It accused Snowden and his publishers of going to press “without submitting (the book for) pre-publication review.”
The notion that US approval is required of current or former federal employees to write or speak publicly on issues related to their work flies in the face of their constitutional rights.
In response to the suit, Snowden tweeted: “The government of the United States has just announced a lawsuit over my memoir, which was just released today worldwide. This is the book the government does not want you to read…”
Already a bestseller, Snowden said in his preface “I used to work for the government, but now I work for the public,” adding:
“It took me nearly three decades to (understand the) distinction…I now spend my time trying to protect the public from the” US intelligence community — working against ordinary people .
Separately, he tweeted: “It is hard to think of a greater stamp of authenticity than the US government filing a lawsuit claiming your book is so truthful that it was literally against the law to write.”
It reveals no state secrets, nothing not already in the public domain, including from establishment media reports.
The ACLU and Knight First Amendment Institute are challenging the so-called pre-publication review process, attorney Max Kaufman, saying:
“(I)ts current form is broken and unconstitutional, and it needs to go.”
“It’s one thing to censor the nuclear codes, but it’s another to censor the same information high schoolers are pulling from Wikipedia.”
“Prepublication review gives the government far too much power to suppress speech that the public has a right to hear.”
Snowden hopes the DOJ lawsuit will promote his memoir, enabling it to attract greater readership worldwide.
