Your chance to own a piece of contemporary jewellery! Suspended in Pink Raffle

Musings about the Suspended in Pink Raffle.

Thanks to Marthe Le Van's recent article, I have been thinking about the 'Suspended in Pink' raffle.

Here is an extract:

"As a retail storeowner and salesperson, the raffle felt amateurish, gimmicky, and a bit desperate—like when I heard about Facebook for the first time. Ultimately, after reconciling all my perspectives, I believe there is much to applaud in the Suspended in Pink raffle. It feels fresh and innovative, optimistic and courageous, liberating and democratic—all worthy consequences pointing toward progress"

Now, I have no problem at all about an idea of mine being compared to the early Facebook- and I am the first to admit the visuals, practicalities and how the raffle is presented still needs some work!
Most raffles are devised as a means of fundraising, to enable an exhibition, event etc... Seen by the  Borax Collective , Handshake Jewellery and an American Art Jewellery group  ( i am sure there are many many more).

And as Le Van notices, through her many astute questions, fundraising is not the aim of the 'Suspended in Pink' Raffle...

So what is it? and WHY should you take part?

I go to many many exhibitions every year. But As a wanna-be collector, I have only three small pins.
I dont want a specially designed brooch with a groups logo on it, a sample piece or a bunch of postcards as a consolation prize- I want THE piece.

I want to own Silke Fleischer's amazing necklace and Sam Hamilton's 'Bread' Like brooch.

As a practitioner is who interested in engagement and audience interaction, I am always looking for ways to get my audience to wear the jewellery, understand it, and imagine owning it- and that, in my view, is the real strength of the 'Suspended in Pink' raffle.

So the idea of raffling off one of the jewellery pieces from the Suspended in Pink Exhibition seemed an obvious idea.

But its more then that.... Once a viewer decides   they wish to take part in the raffle, they then can spend up to an hour, going through the exhibition, trying on the jewellery, comparing, assessing, deciding which item THEY would take home.

Deciding which piece of jewellery spoke out the most to them.

And this was then the piece that they would then bet on.
Maybe they would win it, maybe not- but for £5/€6/$8 it seems like a worth while experience to have- the experience of wearing and imagining that favourite piece of jewellery which YOUR ticket could win you....

And here is the good news- the odds of winning in this raffle are actually really high!

Only a small number of people have guessed the same names, and there are a number of exhibitors who's name has not been guessed yet-

So you have a real chance of winning....

All you have to do is email:
suspendedinpink@gmail.com
with: your name, the name of the artist who you want to win-

And to send payment of £5/€6/$8 by paypal to:
suspendedinpink@gmail.com

The winner is announced this Autumn!

Albert Beger & Co.

Cache
Recent release from Israeli sax hero Albert Beger and his quartet, and the debut release of one of his students’ free-improv trio GOG.

Albert Beger Quartet - The Gate (NoBusiness, 2019) ****

The Beger Quartet is Beger's most stable outfit with recording career of about 25 years, featuring a generation younger musicians - pianist Milton Michaeli, double bass player Shay Hazan and drummer Ofer Bymel (who replaced Adam Cohen and recently was replaced by Hagai Freshtman, who collaborated before with Beger). The Gate was recorded in the summer of 2017 in Afula, Israel.
Beger, asu usual, wrote all the compositions for The Gate, but now opted for more introspective-spiritual vein that represents his deep connection with the Afro-American free jazz forefathers. Beger himself is a long-time yoga practitioner and vegan and the six compositions reflect his own perspective of jazz music as a gate to better realization of the self and its virtues of compassion. Beger’s tone - on the tenor sax and Japanese Shakuhachi bamboo flute flute, identified with Zen Buddhism, is still charismatic and muscular but emphasizes more than ever his contemplative side, avoiding immediate ecstatic outbursts, and seeking a cohesive and strong quartet sound. And indeed, Michaeli, Hazan and Bymel are following his lead closely and adding rich yet modest focused, nuanced layers to Beger’s ideas.

The main pieces, “Zen” and “This Is It”, stress this patient, persistent and almost meditational-ritualistic way one seeks a deeper understanding of his art and true self in the art of the moment. This way is achieved by a generous sharing of your resources, by building together the necessary power for such an intense journey and with emphatic support until reaching the inevitable, liberating emotional climax. The silent and meditative “Shakuhachi impro”, for solo Shakuhachi, injects subtle Western playfulness to the whispering tones of the flute. The last piece, “Silence”, brings the Shakuhachi into a sparse free jazz atmosphere in a manner that offers a new ceremonial experience, suggestive and emotional.

GOG - Something on a Thin Rope (Self Produced, 2019) ***

Something on a Thin Rope is the debut recording of the Israeli, Jerusalem-based trio GOG, featuring cellist Tom Klein, a former student of Beger whose cello is connected to assorted pedals and laptop, synthesizer player Amit Biton and drummer Stav Lipitz, all former student at the local music academy. This free-improv aimed at distancing itssound from the jazz legacy, exploring raw sonic ideas but still flirting with strong melodic veins, just like walking on a thin rope. This album was recorded in Jerusalem in August 2017.

This post-jazz, electro-acoustic trio offers a postmodernist pastiche of sounds, rough noises and expressive colors that never takes itself too seriously (“Veggie Dentist”), often suggests clever and ironic criticism of the Israeli daily noisy and chaotic environment (“Wedding”) and is not shy from being openly emotional. The best realized pieces are the few coherent ones, when GOG doesn't attempt to juggle with too many elements, as the cinematic-mysterious “Last snare”, the fragmented, electronic beats of “Shame/Parade”, “Bonbonim,” (candies) that flirts with West-African rhythmic cycles, and the straight-ahead yet minimalist, spacious and much less dramatic cover of Bjork’s “All is full of love” with Palestinain vocalist Luna Abu-Nasser (drummer Lipitz plays in her band).

Border Facility Temporarily Suspends Migrant Intake After 32 Identified With Flu

Cache
Updated 4:45pm E.T. U.S. Customs and Border Protection temporarily suspended intake at the McAllen Central Processing Center on Tuesday, the largest migrant processing center in South Texas, after the outbreak of what the agency calls "a flu-related illness." It is the same facility where a 16-year-old Guatemalan boy became ill last week, and died after he was transferred to another Border Patrol station. According to a CBP spokesman, after identifying 32 individuals who tested positive for influenza, all were provided treatment on the site or in local hospitals "as appropriate." As of Wednesday afternoon, the Central Processing Center resumed operations. CBP officials say Carlos Hernandez Vazquez was found unresponsive on Monday morning. A nurse practitioner had diagnosed him with influenza A, and he had been moved between facilities to separate him from other migrants to stop the spread of the flu. "A large number" of migrants were complaining of high fevers and other "flu-related"
