Trump/Perdue not that into Farmers...

UPDATE 10/7: I think farmers have had enough, maybe, I hope anyway...
1. “I went to Madison feeling financially scared and emotionally depressed but hopeful,” said Paul Adams, who runs a 500-cow organic dairy near Eleva, WI."I came home feeling financially scared, emotionally depressed, unwanted, and unneeded.”

2. Brittany Olson left her Barron County farm at 2am to make the trip to Expo and hear Perdue speak. “To go through the effort to see the USDA secretary, only for him to say that small farms like ours likely have no future made me feel like little more than a peasant in a system of modern-day feudalism,” Olson said.

3. “To me, it really drew a line in the sand on just where this administration stands,” said Chippewa County dairy farmer George Polzin.
Danielle Erdvick summed it up this way in the story:
But I sense a fire growing in the belly of the family farmers I meet in my work with Farmers Union. Farmers are weary. But there’s a growing flicker that’s starting to feed a change in the narrative. No more will they be spoon-fed a top-down vision for rural America. Instead, I see a drive for a farmscape where fair prices, local food systems, clean water, and land conservation are at the heart of farm policy. How can we achieve it? It’ll take actually enforcing America’s antitrust laws and holding corporations accountable when they try to monopolize an industry. It’ll mean addressing market manipulation. It’ll mean not raising our hackles, as farmers and ag groups, every time someone wants to talk about clean water or livestock siting. It’ll mean continuing to adopt regenerative practices and thinking outside the box so we’re protecting our natural resources for our children and grandchildren.

Farmers will never stop voting for Republicans. Sadly, GOP promises of "small government" simply mean they don't really have to do anything for their constituents, and deregulation is anything that basically leaves them alone.

Tariff War is not Their Fight: It seems farmers are okay sacrificing their livelihoods for big corporate interests seeking intellectual rights and protections.

And then the last shoe dropped; Ag Sec. Sonny Perdue told us what big corporate Republican politicians were really thinking about family farmers:

Perdue told reporters that he doesn’t know if the family dairy farm can survive as the industry moves toward a factory farm model ... “In America, the big get bigger and the small go out. I don’t think in America we, for any small business, we have a guaranteed income or guaranteed profitability.”
A few farmers suddenly realized what was really going on...
Jerry Volenec, a fifth-generation Wisconsin dairy farmer with 330 cows, left the Perdue event feeling discouraged about his future. “What I heard today from the secretary of agriculture is there’s no place for me. Can I get some support from my state and federal government?"

Darin Von Ruden, president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union and a third-generation dairy farmer who runs a 50-cow organic farm (said) getting bigger at the expense of smaller operations like his is “not a good way to go.  Do we want one corporation owning all the food in our country?”
Democrats, Governor Tony Evers backs Family Farms, despite never getting their vote, but after Sonny Perdue's comment, even our laid back Gov. had to say something:

"Are they struggling? Absolutely. But I think at the end of the day we need to get behind them rather than saying, ah maybe you should go larger. I, frankly, resent that the Department of Agriculture secretary from the federal government came in and kind of lambasted them."
But don't take Evers word for it, here's a comment made at the Minnesota Farmfest about CAFO's. Note: Why were visa's for dairy labor ever determined to be seasonal and not year around?:

Trump Piled on First: Remember this...
Wisconsin dairy farmers are still feeling the sting of Trump's visit to Milwaukee in July, where the president downplayed the suffocation felt by farmers here because of Trump's own tariffs.

Trump: "Some of the farmers are doing well. ... We're over the hump. We're doing really well."
Farmer Response...:
"If he's saying farmers are over the hump, he would be badly mistaken," said Darin Von Ruden, a third generation dairy farmer. "In order to get over the hump we need to stop losing dairy farms."
From PBS's Market to Market: Trump's says farmers are happy...

Farmers are slamming Trump's $28 billion farm bailout — more than double Obama's 2009 payment to automakers — as a 'Band-Aid'.
Perdue editorial doesn't repair Damage: Nope, his word salad backtrack to obscure how he really feels, is a little late. In fact, Perdue reminds farmers how this whole problem was really Trump creation:
Purdue: "President Donald Trump has made it his mission to support American agriculture and negotiate better trade deals so our productive farmers can sell their bounty around the globe."
And don't forget how Scott Walker pushed oversupply in the dairy industry.

Here's what one farmer, "a great patriot," really thinks about Trump:

In Gays Mills, WI, over production and large dairy farms are locking many out of getting into farming. From WPT's Portraits from Rural Wisconsin:

GOP Senators Unnerved and ‘Concerned’ About ‘Betrayal’ of Kurds in Syria

GOP Senators Unnerved and ‘Concerned’ About ‘Betrayal’ of Kurds in SyriaBRENDAN SMIALOWSKIPresident Donald Trump’s decision to pave the way for a Turkish invasion of northern Syria at the expense of Kurdish allies in the region has infuriated Republican allies in the Senate who have spent the last two weeks twisting themselves in knots to defend him from an impeachment inquiry. Late on Sunday, the White House released a one-paragraph statement declaring that a Turkish invasion of northern Syria was imminent, and the United States would “not support or be involved in the operation” and “will no longer be in the immediate area.” For Kurds in the region—who have been fighting ISIS with U.S.-supplied weapons and are largely considered the strongest fighting force in Syria—the declaration amounts to an abrogration of agreements with the United States to defend them against Turkey, which considers them to be terrorists. In June, Trump himself warned that abandoning the alliance would allow Turkey to “wipe out the Kurds, who helped us with ISIS.”Trump’s Crazy Syria Move Will Wipe Out America’s Allies and Set Up a Big ISIS ComebackThe backlash from his Republican allies was swift.  Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), led the way on Monday morning, with the South Carolina senator calling the move “shortsighted and irresponsible” on Fox & Friends, a show that effectively serves as a televised presidential daily brief for Trump.“This impulsive decision by the president has undone all the gains we’ve made, thrown the region into further chaos, Iran is licking their chops, and if I’m an ISIS fighter, I’ve got a second lease on life,” Graham said. “I will do everything I can to sanction Turkey’s military and their economy if they step one foot into Syria. I hope I’m making myself clear how shortsighted and irresponsible this decision is.”Graham even referenced the House’s impeachment inquiry, unprompted, before adding that while “I’ve tried to help him,” the president’s behavior was “just unnerving to its core.”Graham, who has spent years trying to steer Trump closer to the hawkish foreign policy stances held by his Republican predecessors, opened the floodgates for Republicans who see Trump’s move as a threat to a critical U.S. ally in the region, and a potentially disastrous embrace of an autocratic regime.Indeed, Monday saw widespread pushback from around the Senate GOP, from lawmakers who’ve cozied up to Trump to those who have been more willing to call him out. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), a Trump ally who has nudged him toward more hawkish positions on Venezuela and Iran policy, called the decision “a grave mistake that will have implications far beyond Syria.” Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) said that he was “deeply concerned” that the decision could leave Kurds who risked their lives to fight ISIS in harm’s way.And Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), probably Trump’s most vocal Senate GOP critic, characterized the pullout as “a betrayal” that “presages another humanitarian disaster” in Syria. Romney went so far as to join Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) to demand that administration officials explain their move to lawmakers and the public. Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE), meanwhile, has toned down his Trump criticism lately but warned that the retreat would “likely result in the slaughter of allies who fought with us, including women and children.” Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) managed to subtweet the president, calling Trump’s move “a terribly unwise decision” moments after the president described his wisdom on the matter as “great and unmatched.”Even Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, in a rare rebuke of the president whom he has pledged to protect from removal from office, pleaded with Trump to maintain an American presence in the region and to prevent Turkey from invading.“I urge the president to exercise American leadership to keep together our multinational coalition to defeat ISIS and prevent significant conflict between our NATO ally Turkey and our local Syrian counterterrorism partners,” McConnell said in a statement. Major new conflict between Turkey and our partners in Syria, McConnell said, “would seriously risk damaging Turkey’s ties to the United States and causing greater isolation for Turkey on the world stage.”Among Trump’s allies seeking to thread the needle between opposing the withdrawal and ensuring that the president didn’t feel attacked was Sen. Ted Cruz, who tweeted that while Trump was “right to want to bring our soldiers home,” it would be “DISGRACEFUL” (capital letters Cruz’s) to allow Turkey to attack Kurdish allies in the region.“Our enemies and rivals (Iran, Russia, etc.) don’t abandon their allies,” Cruz said. “If we want allies to stand with America in the future, we shouldn’t either. Honorable nations stand by their friends.”Seemingly alone among Senate Republicans in supporting the withdrawal was Sen. Rand Paul, who is perhaps the biggest cheerleader of Trump’s isolationist instincts. The Kentucky senator told reporters that he stands with Trump “as he once again fulfills his promises to stop our endless wars and have a true America First foreign policy.”Other Senate Republicans have remained tight-lipped on the president’s decision, perhaps praying that Trump will reverse course on the withdrawal—as he did in December 2018, after sharp rebukes from within the party and the resignation of Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis halted a hastily announced drawdown of U.S. troops from Syria.Asked during an event celebrating a trade agreement with Japan on Monday afternoon about whether he had consulted with the Joint Chiefs of Staff about the decision, Trump insisted that he had.“I consulted with everybody,” Trump said.Additional reporting: Sam Brodey Read more at The Daily Beast.Get our top stories in your inbox every day. Education 21. Education for the 21st Century

Your Name and Title: Robert Zenhausern, CEO School or Organization Name: The Enabling Support Foundation Co-Presenter Name(s): Area of the World from Which You Will Present:  United States and sub-Sahara Africa. Language in Which You Will Present: English Target Audience(s): Teachers of Early Childhood Development Short Session Description (one line): Education 21 is a paradigm shift in Education from the 19th Century into the 21st Century which expects to achieve SDG 4 within 5 years. Full Session Description (as long as you would like): Education 21.  Education for the 21st Century Our goal is not to fix education, but to rebuild it from the start.  A Paradigm Shift. We do not want to bring technology into the classroom.  We want the classroom to join the 21st Century.  Our program, Education 21, emerges from three simple and logical changes.  Each is a unique solution, and an unexpected challenge to well entrenched dogma. The Three Changes.Standardized Testing versus Authentic AssessmentIn place of “teach, memorize, test”, we use Project Based Learning and Authentic Assessment. In Project Based Learning the student does not memorize material but must know where to find specific information.  How well can the student integrate this information and complete a task.  Authentic Assessment evaluates the project as Inadequate, Adequate, or Superior. Replace arithmetic with estimation. In the 19th Century arithmetic was indeed the “gateway” to the sciences and higher mathematics.  Since the advent of calculators, that is no longer the case.  Arithmetic is a linear rote process with a single answer.  Estimation is unbounded and more conceptual.  It is a practical skill in cases where close is good enough.  We want to explore the limits of estimation, and its use as the fundamental calculator.  For those cases where the exact answer is required the spreadsheet becomes a STEM platform it.Subitizing is typically seen as an early childhood skill that is supplanted by counting.  But we plan to explore subitizing as a lifelong skill.  Examples:A painter looks at a room and decides how many cans of paint he will need.  A homeowner wants to build a stone wall and has to decide how many truckloads of stone are needed.  Do architects subitize? All this happens without “teaching”.  Can we enhance the subitizing skill?  Reading.A baby understands the meaning of the spoken word even before speech, but it takes 5 years for the child to understand the meaning of the same word in written form.  That is an absurdity that is accepted without question.Reading is a skill that suffers from a self-inflicted wound.  The purpose of reading is to develop a connection between text and meaning.  From the start we have decided that, because English is a semi-phonetic language, reading should be taught by phonics. That is an epic blunder for two reasons.  The first is that it postpones reading by 5 years, while the child learns phonetic decoding. And second, tragically,  it is effective for only 80% of readers.  The rest are called dyslexic with the heartache and expense that entails. How different speech!  Children learn to speak and understand the spoken word as part of maturation.  Why not reading?  Show the printed word at the same time as the spoken word, and the child will understand both.  Early Reading is a form of speed reading – reading for comprehension, not speech. The Peace Flame networkThe Enabling Support Foundation is a US based 501c(3) nonprofit that provides online support to grassroots African organizations involved with human development and enrichment.  ESF exists only in the Cloud and encourages online and on ground activity by productive organizations.  ESF has created Peace Flame, a network of those organization based on an Office 365 infrastructure.  ESF has strong connections within both LinkedIn and WhatsApp.The Birth of Early ReadingESF was founded in 1994 as an organization that provided technology and Internet access to persons with disabilities, and later education.  Our Mission was to bring Education into the 21st Century, as first outlined in 1990, evolving with the changes in technology.Reading was the first step.  In May 2017 educators from Kenya and Uganda met at Miridians Nursery School near Kampala.  One outcome of the conference was proof of concept study at 9 sites in both countries.  We found and nursery school children learned to read three sentence paragraphs in the 4 months of the study.  As a result, we have reached our first milestone.  Children are starting primary school already reading and writing.  We are now developing the primary grade curricula to take advantage of the instructional time saved by Early Reading.Early Reading has virtually eliminated dyslexia and spelling is much less of an issue.Early Reading has recently added sites in Ghana, Cameroon, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Pakistan. We also have a cultural program and we are collecting children’s art for exhibition.  You can see a preview now, but the site is still under construction.  Websites / URLs Associated with Your More

Hi Rick, I think the Robo-Advisors are a good thing but we have to realize the limitations of this approach. Pretty much, if you want to talk to a human it will cost you 0.30% a year, if you don't need a human but still want guidance, it will cost you 0.15% a year. If you do-it-yourself, it will cost you nothing except for the expense ratios of the funds.

Simplicity is key. Keep your portfolio in a few good funds and you won't need a robot or a human adviser managing your money.

Excellent post Rick. Many investors may not realize this.

Memory: The Origins of Alien Is a Stomach-Churning Look at the Making of a Classic

by Erik Henriksen
Sundance Institute

There are already plenty of deep dives into the making of Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi/horror classic Alien, but Memory: The Origins of Alien is an exceedingly deep one indeed. Directed by Alexandre O. Philippe (who took a similarly focused look at Psycho with 78/52: Hitchcock's Shower Scene), Memory opens by foregrounding the life and pulp influences of Dan O'Bannon, Alien's oft-forgotten screenwriter, but as the film progresses, Philippe grows obsessed to the point of tedium with Alien's chestburster scene. (That is a remarkable scene, but the attention lavished on it here comes at the expense of about a dozen other remarkable sequences in Alien.)

Alongside archival interviews with Scott and the late artist H. R. Giger, Memory boasts a dude-heavy lineup of film scholars, filmmakers, and actors, many of whom offer smart contributions (a bit contextualizing Alien alongside other movies of the late 1970s, from Manhattan to MASH, is great), even as others suggest theories that can charitably be described as stretches. (Philippe goes along real hard with one of the latter, to the point of staging an elaborate opening that feels like nothing so much as an Alien fan film.)

Memory never acknowledges the existence of Alien's increasingly lousy sequels (and it barely acknowledges Scott's increasingly lousy prequels), but only one omission is truly unforgivable: While Memory's talking heads are happy to discuss the movie's brutal, discomfiting reflections on gender, hardly anything is said about Sigourney Weaver's Ripley—Alien's unmistakable backbone, and the reason for much of the film's success. Plenty of the clips in Memory feature Ripley, but Weaver herself is MIA, and making an Alien documentary without Weaver is... well, it's about as good of an idea as making any other Alien movie without her.

Floriana turn the tide in second half

FLORIANA 2 Busuttil 27, Keqi 53 TARXIEN RAINBOWS 1 Murillo 24 League leaders Floriana yesterday had to bank on their character and eventually on their flourishing skills to overcome the pressure after going in arrears and bag three valuable points at the expense of dangerous customers Tarxien. Floriana were legitimate winners. However, Tarxien should be given credit for a sound collective performance which belies their position in the standings. A tottering take-off was completely shoveled aside and in the second half showed some crisp football helped them master their opponents to keep the pace at the top of the table. The architects of the Greens’ victory were once again Jurgen Pisani who marshalled the defence, as Diego Venancio asserted their superiority on the field of play. Chief striker Kristian Keqi supplied his team with diamond-cutting edge while the advanced Jose Arias provided the useful link in the build-up stages. All the others responded well to nullify the efforts of Tarxien Rainbows minus the services of Daniel Zerafa and with the addition of newcomers Nevin Portelli and Maniel Torres Murillo. Tiago Fonesca and Kristian Keqi spearheaded the Greens’ striking line...

Costs Forcing Some Hospitals to Stop Delivering Babies

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — Last month's closing of Unity Point Hospital's obstetrics unit in Marshalltown was only the most recent in Iowa. The Iowa Public Health Department says nearly three dozen community hospitals have stopped delivering babies in the past two decades, and eight stopped last year — the most yet in one year. Stephen Hunter is vice chairman of obstetrics at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. He says Iowa's aging population and shrinking rural numbers are among key reasons for the closures. Hansen Family Hospital CEO Doug Morse told Iowa Public Radio that the increased expense of labor and delivery care led officials to end deliveries at the Iowa Falls facility in November. That forced Jessica Sheridan of Iowa Falls to travel an hour away to deliver her daughter in Ames.

Session: TKG ARENA: The Arcane Scribes:: Dice Variant

by BongWong

Rule Changes
In this variant of TKG Arena: Arcane Scribes, 4 cubes representing each element are used, and there is no payment of Oinks to a common supply. Instead, the cubes are numbered on each face, like a D6, and players roll these “Oink dice” to see how many Oinks they get to use each round. Each turn, a player both rolls 1 Oink die of their choice element and scribes a spell with cost equal to or less than their Oink count. As with the original rules, Oinks count for double when used to scribe a spell of the same element. Unused Oinks do not carry over to the next turn. Reservation of spells is still possible but takes up the action of scribing a spell, after rolling the Oink die.
After a spell has been scribed, the world tile is passed to the next player in the turn order instead of being discarded. The bonuses from the world tile only applies to the player holding the world tile. Players get one bonus Oink, of any of the elements shown on the world tile, for use in scribing in addition to their die roll this turn. Disregard multiples of the same element on the same world tile, they only give one Oink. After scribing, this world tile (from the previous player’s scribing) is discarded.
In playtesting, the scribing of spells seemed similar to the original game. However, there was a reduced level of planning involved, since Oinks do not carry over to the next round and only one element was available each turn. This also made the ability to scribe more heavily dependent on RNG, which might not interest players, especially when the original game was already somewhat RNG-based. One simple strategy that caught on amongst the players was to pick an element which allowed them to scribe spells of that element even if they low-rolled, and any of the other spells if they high-rolled. This way, regardless of the roll, they will be able to scribe a moderate-cost spell without wasting a turn, at the expense of high-cost spells. Overall, scribing of low-cost spells was very swift, scribing of high-cost spells was mostly all-or-nothing situations and decisions to roll the Oink dice were made on the spot instead of planned ahead.
Reservation of spells did not seem to work out well for players as the usage of 2 scribing turns meant that they lost out in card advantage to other players who were scribing spells at every turn. This may be an observation from a small sample size, and the players who reserved spells may not have optimised the strategy. On the other hand, perhaps allowing reservation without using one’s scribing turn would be balanced, keeping the rule that each player can only reserve one spell at any point in time.
The change to world tiles means that the first player(s) will not receive Oinks from world tiles on their first turn. This somewhat negates the first-player advantage present in the original game, but limited playtime with both the original game and this variant makes it difficult to reliably assess the significance of first-player advantage in Arcane Scribes.
This variant seems to shift the player skill requirement from planning ahead (and ability to count cards) to some form of risk management. While there is still an element of fun to be had not unlike the kind one gets from gambling games, it may suit a different clientele from the original game due to the increased sensitivity of player actions to RNG.

[Video] Eritrea - Minister for Foreign Affairs Addresses General Debate, 74th Session

New York

30 September 2019

Mr. President;

Mr. Secretary-General;

Heads of State and Governments; Distinguished delegates;

The current United Nations General Assembly meeting is occurring at a very auspicious time for the Horn of Africa. Positive developments are underway in the region. The sad, painful chapter of domestic turmoil and regional conflicts is giving way to new vistas of internal resurgence and regional cooperation.

In global terms, this is a sensitive and delicate period, when the world is at a crossroads; on the cusp of a new world order, so to speak.

All vital parameters indicate that the unipolar world order has come to an end or is in its twilight years. The economic power balance is inexorably changing, with a spike in attendant, intense rivalries and upheavals. In the event, the current UN General Assembly session cannot but grapple with these issues and chart out viable paths on the way forward.

Africa’s lot in the past quarter of a century has been onerous indeed. Africa’s resources were plundered wantonly; and in spite of hollow phrases of “conflict prevention” and “conflict resolution”, wars and upheavals continue to increase and fester. Almost one billion Africans remain marginalized, through the collusion of external predators, their local surrogates and corrupt entities of special interests. This tragic reality requires utmost and urgent attention for effective remedies, beyond sincere expressions of concern and understanding.

In this context, the Horn of Africa and Middle East regions have been immensely and inordinately afflicted in the past 25 years by externally instigated, intractable, internecine ethnic and clan conflicts, as well as peacelessness and wars among neighboring countries. As a result, they have been, and remain, hotbeds of instability and impoverishment.

This grim reality is in stark contrast to the promising events and hopes engendered in the early

1990s. However, the external and internal complications have obstructed and reversed laudable initiatives for regional cooperation and integration that were in the offing at the time. Furthermore, these conditions have created vacuums and favorable climates for terrorist and other subversive forces to proliferate and expand. Here again, a large part of the blame falls on corrupt local actors that avidly sought to promote their narrow interest at the expense of their peoples.

All these tribulations notwithstanding, the numerous challenges and impediments that afflicted the Horn of Africa region have been overcome at this juncture. A new promising chapter is indeed in the offing again.

We, in the region, are ready, as ever, and with the requisite political will and determination, to work with higher vigor, to promote our collective growth through robust coordination and cooperation. In the event, we wish to underline that ill-advised, obstructive and detrimental external interferences must cease fully to allow the region to effectively address its own matters.

In Eritrea, in addition to shouldering our regional responsibilities, we have embarked on a substantive and sustainable program for economic and social development. We are building our human capital, revamping our infrastructure, and developing key productive and service sectors. We are also intensifying our efforts and significantly increasing investment to ensure that all citizens, throughout the country, enjoy adequate basic services of water, health, education, transport and decent livelihoods.

Eritrea has been making modest strides towards the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) in its three dimensions: economic, social and environmental, with its long-standing policy of a balanced and integrated approach to development. It has already achieved, over the past two decades, significant results in several pillars of the MDGs in spite of limited material resources as well as crippling external adversity, including imposed war and sanctions. Most notable is Eritrea’s achievement in the 4 health related MDGs.

The Horn of Africa region is prone to droughts and erratic rainfall and Eritrea’s soil and water conservation strategy to mitigate the effects of climate change and achieve food security, include the building of small, medium and large dams across the country and terracing its mountainous topography. Eritrea has been able to harvest adequate water, but will require incorporating innovative water technologies to distribute this water efficiently. Eritrea’s sustained tree planting project that also began 1994 continues with full participation of the population.

The international community will have to glean important lessons from the recent past to ensure that the current period, which many have termed as a transition towards a new global order, will lead to and enhance global stability and prosperity. In this regard, it is both timely and proper to revamp and strengthen the United Nations so that it will shoulder its obligations and responsibilities with higher effectiveness.

I thank you.

From Online Discourse to IRL

To be bi in the late 2010s is a totally different experience than being bi a decade ago: We have #BiWeek, a a week cofounded by GLAAD, Bisexual Resource Center, and Still Bisexual to raise awareness about bisexuality. Shows like Broad City, The Good Place, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are transforming the ways in which bi women are represented onscreen. Celebrities, too, are increasingly coming out as bisexual and owning their bisexuality. While bisexual representation is seemingly on the rise in pop culture, offscreen, the discourse around bisexuality isn’t always as positive.

Bisexual stereotypes as well as a perpetual misunderstanding of bisexuality continue to be entrenched. It’s easy to feel like you’re the only one or fighting misconceptions alone, but that isn’t true, especially as more people identify as bi. Bitch is lucky to have multiple bisexual employees, so we’re using this roundtable to parse out our own experiences as bisexuals. We discussed how we’ve found bi community with other bisexual people, bi icons, and how we understand and define our bisexuality.

How did you come to understand your bisexuality?

Margot Harrington, contributing art director: I definitely had baby queer feelings as young as fourth or fifth grade. While I grew up in a decently progressive place with [adequate] sex education and I was taught that being gay or lesbian was cool, there was no conversation or space amid that for bisexuality. I shut that part of me off for years as a result. Sex and the City ruled my sorority in college, but the show deployed messaging that negated bisexuality, which I internalized. Once I was in my 20s and living on my own with more agency, I recognized my feelings once again but chalked it up as a fetish or some sort of inappropriate internalized male gaze. It wasn’t until I reached my 30s that I finally accepted myself and started coming out.

KaeLyn Rich, executive director: I have always found women more aesthetically attractive than men. During a sleepover in seventh grade, I told my friends I thought I was a lesbian because I had very confusing feelings for Christina Ricci in Now and Then. The very next week, I developed a crush on a boy in my class and, much to my relief, I told them I was straight again. Phew. I don’t think I considered bisexuality a possibility because I didn’t know any bisexuals. You were gay or you weren’t! By the time I reached high school, I knew I had feelings for women, but continued to deny it publicly until college, when I came out in full rainbow explosion force. I’ve never looked back. I’m attracted to people of all genders and that’s still the case, even 14 years into a monogamous relationship. My interest in genders different than my own has expanded exponentially since I came out, though my interest in cis straight men is at an all-time low.

Rachel Charlene Lewis, senior editor: I was probably the straightest teenager and preteen of all time. I spent a lot of time making out with and dating boys. But that changed in college when I started exclusively dating women. Now, I exclusively date women, nonbinary people, and genderqueer people. My version of bisexuality leaves minimal room for men. On a lighter note, Stick It really did it for me as well as Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Kristen Stewart as Bella in Twilight. I also really hated Bette (Jennifer Beals) in The L Word until I realized… am I Bette? I’m still figuring that out.

Marina Watanabe, social media editor: I’m glad that Kristen Stewart is being mentioned because whoa boy that was a big red flag for my bisexuality. I looked back at my Tumblr posts from before I was out and I would talk about wanting to lick Kristen Stewart’s hair. But somehow I still thought I was straight. For most of my life, I felt that I wasn’t “bisexual enough” to claim the identity. I was constantly second-guessing my crushes on women and nonbinary people. After about a decade of tiptoeing around the label, I finally admitted to myself (and the entire internet) that I was bi as hell.

How do you navigate the seemingly unending discourse around bisexuality?

MH: Maybe this is dark, but I still have low expectations. That way I’m pleasantly surprised if it is affirming and makes me feel seen.

KR: I take solace in knowing that we are the invisible majority. Non-monosexual people make up the majority of the LGBTQ rainbow soup statistically.Though we also have a lot of the worst outcomes in terms of health, trauma, etc., we are also much more normal and present than we’ve been led to believe. The internet has made finding and being bi so much more fun. We’re here, we’re queer, and we can’t sit on chairs properly!

RCL: I definitely get the most frustrated online. In person, people usually aren’t bold enough to question my bisexuality, and if they do, I’m quick to be like, “Nope, not happening.” Online, though, I see endless nonsense about who is or isn’t bi. In some ways, I get it. A lot of us have deep, messy feelings and our knee-jerk reactions can be gross and exclusive, especially because queerness can feel so isolating. People feel hurt or offended when you aren’t queer how they’re queer because it means they don’t have that sameness. But it’s something we all need to grow out of so we can stop being jerks.

MW: When I first came out, I was navigating a lot of 101-level conversations online about bisexuality and queerness for the first time. It was like, “What’s the difference between bi and pan?” and “bi means two so that means you’re excluding nonbinary people,” which is a lot to unpack. I felt like I had to answer every single question pertaining to bisexuality because I was in a position of being able to educate others. Then I moved to Los Angeles and suddenly all of my friends were LGBTQ, and those nitpick-y online conversations didn’t seem to matter as much in everyday life. That’s not to say the DiscourseTM can’t be or isn’t important, but I was able to step back and take comfort in the fact that the people in my own community weren’t invalidating my sexuality the way online strangers were

Has your understanding of bisexuality shifted over time? If so, what would you say led to this new understanding?

MH: Yes. Just being able to be open about it has healed me so much. I made an intentional choice to do this after learning that bi people suffer higher rates of mental-health issues, substance abuse, and domestic violence than gay or lesbian people. If being more visible can help someone, then I need to bring it. Also, age, time, the overall societal shift to being more accepting of all LGBTQ identities also helped. Oh, and therapy. Therapy helps everything.

KR: I went through a stage where I refused to align with bisexuality because I felt it enforced a strict gender binary. Also, it was the early noughties and I felt so empowered by claiming “queer” as my identity. I still do. That said, “queer” sometimes reads as “lesbian” to people who don’t choose to learn more about me, so it sometimes results in bi erasure, even though it’s a term I use to be the most all-gender-encompassing ever. I returned to bisexual and use both queer and bisexual now. The “bi” in “bisexual,” to me and to most bisexuals I know in 2019, doesn’t mean “attracted to men and women.” It means “attracted to my same gender and to other genders plural.” I love that idea and have fully embraced being bisexual again, specifically to make my bisexuality hypervisible.

Do you think there has been progress in how bisexuality is portrayed in pop culture?

MH: For sure! Even two years ago, the conversation was much different. There were more jokes at our expense and less representation everywhere, including queer media. More people are showing up to the party and that’s *fucking awesome. I still get frustrated with the discourse around “passing” though. While it’s true that this affords privilege in some ways, it doesn’t always mean things are easier. Being invisible or having to accentuate your identity to try and be “enough” of a thing is exhausting.

Also, we need to stop interrogating bi people about their types or amount of sexual experiences, like, “Oh wow, you’ve never done X?” It’s invasive and implies there are some sort of rules or punch card of experiences they must have to be “legit.”

KR: A million times yes. Hello, 20biteen! There are more openly bisexual actors and TV and film characters now than ever and while there are still frequent missteps, it feels like we’re moving in the right direction. I’m hungry for more, but happy I’m living to see what’s possible for the next generation. I mean, Gen Z is super duper bisexual, non-labeled, fluid, and open, and they’re bringing a whole new vibe to bisexual representation.

RCL: Yes. I talk about Gen Z constantly, because I have so much hope and enthusiasm for them. They are so beyond the discourse that we’re still fighting about on Twitter.

MW: Yes! When I was in high school less than a decade ago, Glee, which constantly made bisexuality the butt of the joke, was the closest thing I had to bi representation. When I was in middle school, Paige (Lauren Collins) had a bi storyline on Degrassi, , but she did the classic TV thing where she refused to label herself as bisexual. I get it. Not everyone wants to label themselves, but that became a weird trope where characters were seemingly afraid to explicitly identify as bi. Pop culture representation still isn’t perfect, but I just marathoned Schitt’s Creek and there was a whole episode where a main character says they’re pansexual (which I consider to be under the bi+ umbrella.) I don’t think I’ve seen that on TV before. I also watched Degrassi: Next Class, which is the updated version of the series I watched when I was a kid, and they also featured a bi male character.

“People feel hurt or offended when you aren’t queer how they’re queer because it means they don’t have that sameness. But it’s something we all need to grow out of so we can stop being jerks.”

Where and how do you find bisexual community IRL and online?

MH: I love to use Twitter and to an extent Instagram to find this community. What “tells” people are coming up with, for example, helps a lot. I’ve made a point of labeling myself IRL as well, which inherently starts convos about bisexuality and has led to newer and deeper friendships.

KR: Everywhere! My best friend is bisexual. Some of my coworkers are bisexual. My internet friends are bisexual. You find bisexuals everywhere if you go deep into queer community online or IRL. There’s a difference though, in terms of community and identity. I know an awful lot of bisexuals who identify as bisexual but don’t feel “bi enough” to actively participate in queer spaces. That is just B.S. that they’ve been made to feel that way. I know the feeling because I used to share it! Once you decide you deserve to be out, proud, and part of the LGBTQ culture, finding bi community become a lot easier. (I promise, it does, so come on out!)

RCL: Similarly to KaeLyn, I know so many bisexual people IRL. Growing up, I had one of those friend groups where almost all of us have come out as queer in one way or another. I also have several bisexual friends. It’s so nice to have people you can see and be around who can give you that nod of sameness. I tweet about bisexuality constantly too, so I tend to have people in my DMs asking questions about bisexuality, like how did I know? How do you know if you’re bi “enough?” How do you come out when you’re bi but single or dating someone of a different gender or dating someone of the same gender? Bisexuality is complicated and community really helps with that, even if we all ultimately experience it in different ways.

Who are your bisexual icon(s)? Why?

MH: Stephanie Beatriz is one of my bisexual icons. I really like how Brooklyn Nine-Nine introduced and handled bisexuality through her character. The storyline seems influenced by Beatrize and reality in a way that I haven’t seen in other media where bi people have been typically tokenized, cast as villains, or fetishized. I’ve loved Janelle Monáe for years and her last album, Dirty Computer, and the publicity around it sealed her as an icon.

Every other person I can think of are fictional characters because there are so few examples. I’ve made up and projected what I want to see onto them. Killing Eve, Bob (H. Jon Benjamin) from Bob’s Burgers, Catra (AJ Michalka) from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Watts (Mary Stuart Masterson) from Some Kind of Wonderful, and Rufio (Dante Basco) from the movie Hook. I couldn’t tell if I had a crush on David (Kiefer Sutherland) or wanted to be him but he’s a deeply emotional character who’s like the “daddy” of the Lost Boys, with eyeliner, earrings, and strong bi vibes that ticks all my queer and nonbinary boxes.

RCL: I couldn’t agree with Janelle Monáe more. I saw her live three or four years ago, and it really changed everything for me. Her dancing was just wow!. My other bisexual icons include Tessa Thompson (who I adore in all the ways) and Sara Ramirez, who had a major impact on me as a Grey’s Anatomy fan. (My cat is named Dr. Yang).

KR: There are so many. Here is a quick highlight reel:

Alan Cumming is one of the more established out, proud, don’t-call-me-anything-but bisexual celebrities and I’ve always admired that about him.

Margaret Cho is literally the first queer and bi person who made me feel seen as a little transracial Korean adoptee rural queer baby and I will always love her for that.

Brenda Howard is the Mother of Pride and the patron saint of bisexuals. I don’t know if our politics would have always aligned, but she’s truly one of the unsung heroes of the so-called modern gay rights movement and a real damn pioneer for bisexuals and for all of us!

Josephine Baker, who just lived the fullest, most surreal life, had a pet cheetah, was a French spy, and was the only official female speaker at the 1963 March on Washington. She was one hell of a bisexual icon!

Kekayaan Negara Dirompak RM60billion Dlm Tahun 2018 Sahaja Melalui Rasuah

UMNO sendiri menjadi sarang rasuah dimana semua peringkat UMNO dijangkiti rasuah.

Kenapa selepas PH jadi kerajaan baru kita tahu perkara berikut? :

1) Khazanah
- Separuh kerugian Khazanah kerana 'Bail-out' MAS.
- MAS menyebabkan 6000 orang rakyat Malaysia hilang pekerjaan demi membela 2 orang CEO Mat Salleh.
- CEO Mat Salleh gadai laluan MAS kepada Emirates lepas tu dia resign keje dengan Emirates.
- Syarikat-syarikat GLC bawah Khazanah jugak gagal menyumbangkan keuntungan.

2) Felda
- Felda mempunyai hutang RM8 bilion hingga menjejaskan perancangan tanam semula.

- Dana EPF jugak jadik modal Najib untuk 'membantu ekonomi US' semasa dia jumpa Trump.

RM60 billion may have been lost to graft in 2018

KUALA LUMPUR: MALAYSIA could have haemorrhaged RM60 billion of last year’s gross domestic product (GDP) value due to corruption.

Criminologist Datuk Seri Akhbar Satar drew this observation based on World Bank projections that graft hacks away two to four per cent of a country’s GDP on an annual basis.

“We are losing up to RM57.88 billion based on this calculation, but I estimate that we could be losing RM60 billion or even more due to unseen social costs and indirect graft that is difficult to quantify.”

The former Transparency International Malaysia president said he took the highest rate in the range given by the World Bank due to the magnitude of graft in Malaysia.

“And these estimates are conservative. We have so many unsolved high-profile cases of corruption and fraud in Malaysia.

“This year, the GDP is expected to grow between 4.3 per cent and 4.8 per cent. What then?” he said, adding that such estimates in graft stood in the nation’s way in its Shared Prosperity Vision.

Checks with relevant ministries found that RM1 billion could build 800 to 1,000 100-bed hospitals, 40 schools or four-lane roads stretching several kilometres.

Last year, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail revealed that the nation lost RM47 billion of its GDP value to corruption in 2017.

That amount was more than what the government spent on education and double the sum allocated for healthcare in the same year.

Transparency International Malaysia also said about four per cent of the GDP had been lost to corruption annually since 2013.

Economist Dr Hoo Ke Ping, meanwhile, offered another perspective on how funds have been lost due to graft.

He said corruption in Malaysia had been institutionally endemic since the 1970s, when the number of government agencies and government-linked companies expanded from about 30 entities back then to the thousands seen today.

He said this led to people being burdened as they endured negotiation and appointment practices that were open to abuse.

“The system of direct negotiations, concession agreements labelled under the Official Secrets Act 1972, as well as political patronage, cronyism, nepotism and unregulated political financing means that in the end consumer pays more.”

He said while this did not necessarily mean that the country’s coffers bled all the time, it was about consumers being directly affected due to corrupt practices.

Hoo cited the negotiations of highway deals, where rates and the durations of concessions were open to increases at the expense of the people.

“This is a form of graft. Toll fares can be increased by a few sen or ringgit that way.”

He said previously, independent power producers were also given higher subsidies and the burden was passed to consumers via increased tariffs.

Hoo, however, credited the government for reviewing some deals.

“Solar-powered electricity is now sold to Tenaga Nasional Bhd through an open tender system, which cost as low as 28 sen or 29 sen per unit following the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry’s intervention. Previously it was 30 sen or 40 sen.

“The government has to relook its previous and current policies and practices, and carry out changes.”

Sunway University Business School economics professor Dr Yeah Kim Leng said there was no way for Malaysia to achieve its Shared Prosperity Vision goals without corruption being kept at a minimum.

He said rampant graft would lead to resources being diverted or transferred out of the country, depleting the nation’s coffers.

“Graft causes leakages, wastage and diversion of resources, as well as higher costs, and this will be passed on to consumers.

“The worst is when practices, such as the awarding of contracts and public investment, affect businesses that are clean and efficient.

“The end result will be the erosion of investor confidence, outflow of capital and reduced investments because companies are forced to offer bribes to get clearance or favours.”

Yeah said when the costs were passed on to the consumer, the products would be less competitive and it would affect their bottom-line.

He said in the past, there were instances when Malaysia’s attractiveness to investors, ranking in corruption and ease of doing business took a hit because of graft.

He said this changed when Pakatan Harapan took over the government.

“PH has demonstrated its commitment to end corruption and it is manifested in the country’s improved ranking in the anti-corruption index.”

He said the government’s stand in taking former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to court over abuses related to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal was crucial in improving the country’s reputation.

Malaysia’s attractiveness to investors was climbing as a result of this, he added.

He commended the government for coming up with the soon-to-be enforced Section 17(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009.

The clause on corporate liability will see companies being fined no less than 10 times the value of the gratification, or RM1 million, whichever is higher, or be subjected to a prison term not exceeding 20 years, or both, when the law comes into effect in June 2020.

Section 17A(3) also provides that if the offence is committed by a commercial organisation, the director, controller, officer, partner and persons managing its affairs at the time of the offence is deemed to have committed the offence of failing to prevent corruption.

These individuals will then need to prove that the offence was committed without his consent or connivance and that he exercised due diligence to prevent the commission of the offence.

Increased On Line Traffic Making Money With Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs can be a very powerful source of income for your website. Affiliate programs offer the best opportunities to start an online business, or to grow and existing one to new levels. They are a great way to monetize your web site and you should definitely take the time to look into them. There are three primary ways to locate affiliate programs for a target website. They are affiliate programs directories, large affiliate networks that provide the platform for dozens or even hundreds of advertisers, and the target website itself.

Although many affiliate programs have terms of service that contain rules against spam, this marketing method has basically proven to attract abuse from spammers. There are literally thousands of affiliate programs throughout the internet, covering a variety of different niches. Do you know which program you should join and what the most effective marketing methods are.

Whether you are just looking to make a little extra income every month or you are making or planning to make a full time living in the world of revenue sharing, it is absolutely important for you to get the best information on the best affiliate programs and how to cash in on these top money making opportunities. There are tens of thousands of affiliate programs on the internet covering just about every product and service you could imagine.

If you are new to promoting affiliate programs and you have completed a fair trial period of the affiliate programs you started with, you are then ready to move on. What indeed are affiliate programs and how can you make money using them. These programs are also known as associate programs or publisher programs, are actually quite simple. For example some companies will pay 10% commission so if a visitor to your web site clicks on your affiliate link and makes a purchase of $100, you will be paid $10.

These type of programs that pay you per sale are normally called pay per sale affiliate programs. There are many different types of affiliate programs so not all of them will pay you per sale or a percentage of a sale. Something that those who are new to these programs do not know how to do efficiently is find high paying affiliate programs that best complement their web site. However, a much better and quicker method to finding quality programs is to search for affiliate program directories online.

Some people promoting affiliate programs do not even have a website and they are making thousands of dollars a month. If you are in the affiliate marketing industry you probably know by now that finding great converting offers are not easy to find. It is an internet based marketing practice in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliates marketing efforts.

Moreover, it is also the name of the industry where a number of different types of companies and individuals are performing this form of internet marketing, including affiliate networks, affiliate management companies and in house affiliate managers and many others. The methods used include organic search engine optimization, paid search engine marketing, e-mail marketing and in some cases display advertising.

While search engines, e-mail and website syndication capture much of the attention of online retailers, affiliate marketing carries a much lower profile. Currently the most active sectors for affiliate marketing are the adult, gambling and retail industries. Emerging new programs are detected and made known to the affiliate marketers with much greater speed and efficiency. Less than one percent of traditional affiliate marketing programs today use cost per click.

Cost per click was more common in the early days of affiliate marketing but has diminished in use over time due to click fraud issues very similar to the click fraud issues modern search engines are facing today. Contextual advertising programs such as google adSense are not considered in the statistic pertaining to diminished use of cost per click, as it is uncertain if contextual advertising can be considered affiliate marketing.

Most merchants favor affiliate marketing because in most cases it uses a pay for performance model, meaning that the merchant does not incur a marketing expense unless results are accrued. The increased number of internet businesses and the increased number of people that trust the current technology enough to shop and do business online allows further maturation and strong affiliate marketing.

Since the emergence of affiliate marketing, there has been little control over affiliate activity. Some affiliate programs have a large variety of marketing materials available to you for promoting their products and services. They may include dozens of banners in all shapes and forms, pop ups, mail outs, just about every type of promotional tools available. No matter what type of commission these affiliate programs pay, you still will earn money from them.
