I smiled a satisfied mommy smile.....&nbsp; the one where you can tell after about 5 minutes of flipping, you are really going to like this.......<br /> <a href=" God's Creation</a>&nbsp;is a great science curriculum.&nbsp; You can use it with 2nd to 7th graders.&nbsp; It is such a great spring board for&nbsp;in depth&nbsp;study.<br /> <br /> It covers everything from the creation to the parts of a cell.&nbsp; The Curriculum&nbsp;is comprised of a Teacher's Manual, a student consumable book, and a CD with songs.&nbsp; Have I ever told you how much I love teachers manuals?&nbsp; Well I do..... they make my heart happy.<br /> <br /> &nbsp;I loved that the Teacher's Manual contained the text, it was a delight for my struggling reader to be free from reading in science.&nbsp; The student book contains worksheets but some of them are actually projects, making this a very hands on way to learn.&nbsp; I appreciated the Digging deeper section.&nbsp; There were great ideas to expand the learning process.&nbsp; Books to check out from the library or activities to try.&nbsp; We chose to learn about the Universe while we were reviewing the product, and we made a star projector,&nbsp; the solar system...and a volcano!<br /> <br /> If you are a parent of a multi-level homeschool....&nbsp; Exploring God's Creation might just be perfect for you.&nbsp; It would be so easy to adapt to each student's grade level and eliminate the need for 5 different textbooks lying around.&nbsp; The Student Book is fully reproducible, or you can purchase additional books for $13.95... that is VERY affordable !!&nbsp; I only used it with one child, but I look forward to using it again with my youngest in a few years.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> <a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" height="353" src="; width="400" /></a><br /> <br /> The whole package is $29.95, and the CD is included.&nbsp; The CD was a great way for kids to have little ditty's to remember lessons with.&nbsp; I was very thankful that someone else was singing these songs..... because I tried to make up some tunes to the songs as they were listed in the Teacher's Manual....&nbsp; and well.......&nbsp; let's just say my singing and tune creating abilities need to remain confined to the shower....&nbsp;(wink, wink)<br /> <br /> We will definitely continue to use this science curriculum through the summer months.&nbsp; We really have enjoyed our time with it over the last month.<br /> <br /> For more information and to see some of the other products that Eagles Wings has to offer&nbsp;visit their website <a href="; It would talk to you and tell you to put your hand is a certain spot on the keyboard... (which is&nbsp;where they were but Hunter did not type fast enough.)&nbsp; He would become very aggravated !!&nbsp; It would halt his progress, because it would "freeze" the screen while it reminded you how to type.... and then you would have to begin again.&nbsp; After a few weeks of playing and trying to get faster.... I would eventually just sit and type out those games for him.&nbsp; He could repeat back what the game said.... just not input it in quickly enough.&nbsp; Nor did he spell well enough to not have the game beep at him 50 times in a sentence.</div><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="; /></a><br /> If you would like to see the games played, they have created a video for parents to actually see the program in action. &nbsp; To see a video of Word Qwerty <a href=" here</a>.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">Talking Fingers offers Word Qwerty in two different formats.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">The online version which is a five year subscription</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="158" j8="true" src="; width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Or you can purchase a CD version.&nbsp; ( note it is <em><u>NOT</u></em>&nbsp; compatible with Windows 7 or Mac 10.6)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="157" j8="true" src="; width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">I really feel that Talking Fingers has done a great job and keeping their program affordable... especially for those families with multiple children in the 7-9 age range.&nbsp; Their program is entertaining, and doesn't feel like you are doing the same thing over and over again.&nbsp; As the parent, you can set the Mastery level from behind the scenes and build confidence by allowing your child to progress through the levels without becoming too frustrated with wrong answers.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">While it wasn't an overall best fit for our family, there were many components we did like, and they DID reinforce and help Hunter grasp some of the spelling concepts.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">Talking Fingers offers a variety of programs to teach typing, reading and spelling.&nbsp; Stop by their website at <a href="; and see their product list, or to contact them directly if you have additional questions.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">Visit the TOS <a href=" Crew blog</a> to see what other families have to say about how <a href=" Qwerty</a> worked for them during their school days.</div><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;">*******</div><div style="text-align: center;">as a member of the TOS Homeschool Crew, Talking Fingers provided reviewers with&nbsp;limited time access to the online version of Word Qwerty.&nbsp; This access was solely for the purpose of this review.&nbsp; No other compensation was received.&nbsp; All of the above opinions are my own.</div>2011/05/word-qwerty.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Julie Coney)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912510326533536076.post-4928461572030514494Wed, 18 May 2011 15:25:00 +00002011-05-22T08:26:47.784-07:00TOS Crew ReviewMad Dog Math<a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" class="aligncenter" src="; /></a><br /> <br /> <a href=" Dog Math</a> is a program designed reinforce math facts with your child. It is geared to grades K-5, but the struggling middle or high schooler might find it helpful as well.<br /> <br /> There are several versions of Mad Dog Math available, if you need it for a co-op or classroom please visit their website <a href="; for more information. <br /> <br /> In our home we used the down loadable Home software. It is available at three different prices.<br /> <br /> A one year license: $19.99<br /> <br /> 2-years: $29.99<br /> <br /> the forever license: $39.99<br /> <br /> Mastery based, it begins with addition and moves through to division, breaking down fact families into bite sized pieces to master.<br /> <br /> <a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" src="; /></a><br /> The goal is for the child to answer the problems in 2 minutes and then 1 and then eventually in 30 seconds. They can earn *stickers* as they complete different fact families. The time commitment for the program is only 10 minutes a day... freeing you up to work with another child for a few minutes or change over that load of laundry.<br /> <br /> I appreciated the ease of download and set up and the small size it took up on the screen. It was also nice that the program moved from question to question.... enabling the child to move quickly through the problems. It is a very straight forward, fact learning program, that helps your child understand the WHOLE problem not just memorize an answer. I also feel the price is very reasonable<br /> <br /> Even for all the things we liked about the program... I regret that it is not a fit for our family. Hunter was our primary user of this program, doesn't do speed timing so very well. He becomes very frustrated with not being able to meet the deadline.<br /> <br /> I have also begun to realize that Hunter is a visual Right Brained learner. He can learn and practice facts forever, but unless he has a mental picture of the answer, it won't stick. Teaching him facts with BLANKS in them..... he will recall the BLANK and not the answer. This has led us to teach him math facts in a less <em>flash card-ish </em>( is that a word?) type of way.<br /> <br /> I know that this product was such a blessing to many families, and it may well be perfect for your family. Please visit the <a href=" Homeschool Crew blog</a> and see what other families are saying about this great product.<br /> <br /> ********<br /> <br /> Mad Dog Math supplied members of the TOS Homeschool Crew with a version of their software for free, for the purpose of this review. (&nbsp;Shhhhh don't tell anyone, I am a big freebie map finder.&nbsp; I don't like to pay for maps.)&nbsp;&nbsp; <br /> <br /> <strong><em>{Reason 1 :&nbsp;}</em></strong>&nbsp; Saves time!&nbsp; Sometimes in my quest to never pay for maps... I spend half a day searching and searching for the perfect one with the perfect information for the lesson we are on.&nbsp; I so easily forget that my TIME is WORTH something.&nbsp; While I may not pay for the map in money..... I way over paid in TIME...&nbsp; and believe me my laundry room, and kitchen are both wrecks because of it!<br /> <br /> <strong><em>{Reason 2 :}</em></strong> I can't manipulate my "free" map.&nbsp; WONDERMAPS......&nbsp; is completely adjustable.&nbsp; Each map is made up of a series of customizable layers.&nbsp; So you can print in color... or black and white.... you can print topographically or not.&nbsp; You may have latitude and longitude lines or not.&nbsp; Take away state names or leave them.&nbsp; Test on state capitals?&nbsp; Print out maps with them.... and go back and create a test map to print with out them.&nbsp; <u>By far, I have to say that this is the BEST feature of the program</u>.&nbsp; Being able to make the EXACT map you need to fit your school needs....&nbsp;is stupendous.<br /> <br /> Check out the map of Australia here.....&nbsp; to see the difference in some of the layering effects.<br /> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"><a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" height="361" src="; width="400" /></a></div><br /> <div style="text-align: center;"><a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="Photobucket" border="0" height="363" src="; width="400" /></a></div><br /> <strong><em>{Reason 3 :}</em></strong>&nbsp;&nbsp; The program already contains maps from existing history curricula.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> If you use Mystery of History, or All American History....&nbsp; WONDERMAPS has the maps loaded right in!&nbsp; When I used MOH 1 a few years back.... I cut all the maps out of the back of the book with an exacto knife.... categorized them and have kept them neat for the last few years until the next child needed them.&nbsp; While the maps are not available with layering.... they are EXACTLY like they are in the text book.&nbsp; There are answer keys.....&nbsp; Now with a few clicks you can have all your maps for the year printed and filed.... ready to go. I probably would have sold a kid to have something like this a few years back for MOH.... now with a child using it next year....&nbsp; I can't wait to use WONDERMAPS to help make all the mapping lessons easier! <br /> <br /> P.S.... if you register your product on the Bright Ideas Press website...... they will send you updates of new maps when they become available.&nbsp;&nbsp; I hear a MOH 4 is in the works and they will send you the updates for that when they are available.<br /> <br /> <br /> I really could go on and on... but I think it only fair to let you watch a tutorial of the product (the same one I viewed before beginning to use&nbsp;WONDERMAPS)&nbsp; and see for yourself all of the great things that it can do.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="331" src="; width="530"></iframe><br /> <br /> <br /> Cool eh?&nbsp; That is what I thought too after watching.... I couldn't wait to get started !&nbsp;&nbsp; Oh and I almost forgot to mention that there is a Teachers Guide with lots of helpful ideas, and a sample Unit Study.&nbsp; It even has a recipe for making salt dough maps!&nbsp; You really could just cycle through all of the Themed Maps and use this program for Geography on its own.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> Head on over to <a href=" Ideas Press</a> and see some of the other wonderful and <u>affordable</u> History, Science and Geography products that are available for use in your homeschool.<br /> <br /> A big thank you to the folks who created WONDERMAPS....... you have&nbsp;cured me forever of searching endlessly on the Internet for maps.&nbsp; I will now just open my WONDERMAPS and know that I have exactly what I will need all in one place.<br /> <br /> Lots of other families reviewed WONDERMAPS in their homeschool.&nbsp; Visit the <a href=" Homeschool Review Crew page</a> to see what things they are saying about this product.<br /> <br /> If you are a TOS Magazine subscriber.&nbsp; Look in the Spring Edition...... There is a coupon for 20% off of WONDERMAPS<br /> <br /> ******<br /> Bright Idea Press supplied TOS Homeschool Crew Members with access to WONDERMAPS free of charge for the purpose of this review. It's May! and the Schoolhouse Expo is on the WAY!<a class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-via="a_teachingheart" href=" src="; type="text/javascript"> </script> <br /> <br /> So it's Sunday... and in my house that translates to a relax day.&nbsp; There is church in the morning and evening, but in the middle..... it is movies or naps....&nbsp; <br /> <br /> Today, while the DVD is playing "How to Train your Dragon"&nbsp; for the 6 kids that happen to be in the living room......&nbsp;while dinner is in the oven finishing up.....&nbsp; I decided to sneak a peak at my emails.....<br /> <br /> I have been very busy getting the garden done and helping some friends get their farm in order....&nbsp; writing reviews.... I haven't even had time to run a load in the washer...<br /> <br /> And ever in the attempt to avoid the laundry....&nbsp; I am sitting at the computer cleaning out the inbox....&nbsp; it's still work right?<br /> <br /> Anyway, in my inbox there were reminders for the Schoolhouse Expo that is starting tomorrow!&nbsp; I can hardly believe it!&nbsp; It is here!<br /> <br /> I was snooping around the <a href=" Expo</a> page, looking at the speakers and deciding which of them were going to be MUST listens ( like sit in front of computer and take notes sort of listen) ... and the ones that I can listen to with one ear while I do other things....<br /> <br /> I stumbled upon the door prize list....&nbsp; Have you seen this thing?<br /> <br /> Normally I skip the door prize page....&nbsp; As an independent contractor for TOS...&nbsp; doing reviews....&nbsp; I don't get to play along during the give aways...&nbsp; But for some reason today, I was just curious to see what it was they were giving away.......<br /> <br /> All I can say is WOW!<br /> <br /> One prize is a two night stay at Jenness&nbsp; Park in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.....&nbsp; I was floored!&nbsp; I used to do there for Winter Retreats when I was in High School Youth Group!&nbsp; It is so beautiful up there.&nbsp; The family that wins that prize will be blessed for sure!<br /> <br /> There are High School Elective courses, give aways from colleges....Latin Curriculum's, an IEW course (VERY VERY COOL!) ... and the most amazing Map program I have ever used..... Wondermaps, from Bright Ideas Press.<br /> <br /> I really think you should check out the prize list for yourself.... go to:&nbsp; <a href=" /> <br /> I hear there is going to be scavenger hunts in the Vendor Hall this year.... so make sure you add <a href=" Schoolhouse Expo website</a> to your favorites list so you can get there FAST!<br /> Don't forget to "like" the <a href=" Expo</a> page on FB .....&nbsp; I know I stop by there during the Expo to talk about the great things that the speakers are saying.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> I really can't wait to see you at the Expo tomorrow!2011/05/hurray-hurray-its-may-and-schoolhouse.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Julie Coney)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912510326533536076.post-2459988569110380398Sat, 14 May 2011 06:43:00 +00002011-05-14T00:01:41.785-07:00TOS Crew ReviewEnd Eye Rolling with Institute for Excellence in Writing, Student Writing Intensive C !!<a class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-via="a_teachingheart" href=" src="; type="text/javascript"> </script> <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="66" j8="true" src="; width="320" /></a></div>So..........How are you doing with teaching writing to your&nbsp;kids?<br /> <br /> Yeah.....&nbsp; I feel ya....<br /> <br /> *insert sheepish look here*&nbsp;&nbsp;I haven't done the best either.<br /> <br /> Trust me....&nbsp; it is not for the lack of trying..........I have <em>tried</em>.<br /> <br /> I bought books that said they were for reluctant writers.&nbsp; I bought&nbsp;cute little notebooks.&nbsp; I thought of creative writing prompts....&nbsp;&nbsp;I begged, I pleaded, I cajoled......absolutely everything I tried to do to make writing&nbsp; fun, engaging, interesting or creative.... was met with..........<br /> <br /> EYE ROLLING..........&nbsp; and those little&nbsp;pshahhhhhhhhh noises that sound like your teen has some how morphed&nbsp;&nbsp;into a pressure cooker.....<br /> <br /> So,&nbsp;after a few years of&nbsp;banging my head into the whiteboard on the wall........<br /> <br /> I just&nbsp;gave up.&nbsp; I figured that by the time they got to college....&nbsp;&nbsp;a few failed papers would&nbsp;be a catalyst to sharpen their writing skills....<br /> <br /> With absolutely nothing as a writing program&nbsp;in use for a year or&nbsp;two.... it was me who was rolling her eyes when I found out that I would be reviewing a writing program....<br /> <br /> I will admit that&nbsp;I was scared....&nbsp; afraid that again another program would be tried.... and that&nbsp;I wouldn't be able to get the kids interested in it.... and that there would be moments I would have to duct tape them to the&nbsp;couch&nbsp;so we&nbsp;could get through this...<br /> <br /> I stand before you&nbsp;( well sit really, because I have to sit to type....&nbsp; I can't type standing.... but you get the point.....)&nbsp; to say........<br /> <br /> MY KIDS LOVED THIS PROGRAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!<br /> <br /> After the first two lessons they actually asked to do it.&nbsp; They asked to do it on Saturday's! &nbsp;(what? who does that?) <br /> <br /> You know what I heard every single time they did the lessons?<br /> <br /> Laughter.&nbsp; blissful laughter.<br /> <br /> They would laugh and laugh and laugh through the DVD's.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; They walked around for weeks telling each other that someone was in deep yogurt.....<br /> <br /> It wasn't just laughter.... that was happening as they watched <a href=" Pudewa</a> teach.....&nbsp; There was LEARNING !!!&nbsp; Delivered in an easy conversational style, Mr. Pudewa&nbsp;draws&nbsp;the students in and makes the learning of writing skills enjoyable.&nbsp; Clearly, a talent I lack.<br /> <br /> For this review we used the <a href=" Writing Intensive C</a>.&nbsp; This course is designed for high school students that, for whatever reason, need a jump start in writing.&nbsp; It was filmed during a week long class, but it is broken up into a very manageable lessons.&nbsp; They even include a 30 week schedule for you to use the program over the course of an entire school year!&nbsp; It was a wonderful thing not to have to think about creating a schedule.&nbsp; All we had to do was follow the one that was already created for us!<br /> <br /> Things I&nbsp;&nbsp; <strike>liked</strike>&nbsp; loved! :<br /> <ul><li>There were teacher notes to go with EVERY lesson.... this made me look exceptionally smart to my already hip, and knowing everything teens.</li> <li>There was a teacher..... and this time it wasn't me !&nbsp; </li> <li>Lots of samples </li> <li>There was a notebook where my children could keep all their writing work in one place!!&nbsp; ( AMEN!) </li> <li>The portable wall</li> <li>It was a pain .......and eye rolling free curriculum</li> </ul><br /> What the kids have to say about it :<br /> <br /> Evan (17, and a junior) :&nbsp; I enjoyed the straight forward delivery style of this program.&nbsp; It was funny, and engaging.&nbsp; I have fallen asleep during other attempts to learn about writing.&nbsp; This program was too interesting to sleep through.<br /> <br /> Tayler (15, and a sophomore) : I like it. It was a fun way of learning how to write.&nbsp; Mr. Pudewa made learning something that can be confusing, easy.&nbsp; <br /> <br /> <a href=" Writing Intensive Level C is available for $99</a>.&nbsp; For that price you receive the 4 discs of &nbsp;DVD lessons and&nbsp;a teacher's notebook that contains all the student handouts and dividers.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" j8="true" src="; /></a></div>&nbsp;<a href=" student books are sold for $18</a>.&nbsp; In my opinion.... if you have more than one student, just buy the extra notebook.&nbsp; We copied pages for this review... and for the cost of printer ink these days.... the $18 is worth every single cent, not to mention your time copying page after page.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" j8="true" src="; /></a></div><br /> <a href=" also sent us this nifty Portable Wall</a>.&nbsp; It has all the whiteboard information&nbsp;on it.&nbsp; I was amazed at how often it was referred to, especially when the kids were writing and editing their compositions.&nbsp; The Portable Wall is available for $7.&nbsp; I recommend one per student using the program.... we shared... but it was hard when they were both working on something.&nbsp; It would have been nice to have two.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" j8="true" src="; /></a></div>Ever generous in the material that they supplied for us to review, IEW also included the DVD titled; <a href=" and Style Overview</a>. The tenets on which it rests seemed perfectly sound: after meeting a man or woman through work or friends, one gets to know him or her, and if one likes what one sees, one continues to deepen the commitment, which sometimes leads to marriage. What surprises me now is how much this system leaves to chance encounter, to a kind of fate or fortune. For a decidedly unmystical society that seems to have the answer for everything else -- the best medical care, cutting-edge technology, superhighways, and space shuttles -- it seems odd that people are left to their own resources, casting around for another lonely soul, for what is arguably the most important decision of their lives."</span></blockquote><span style="font-family:georgia;"> </span></span><span style=";font-family:times new roman,times,serif;font-size:100%;" > <p><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:times new roman, times, serif;">Just for the record: </span></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:times new roman, times, serif;"><span><span style="font-family:times new roman, times, serif;">I'm not reading this book and nor do I want to go to India to find myself a husband. Just those few words before your name at the end of a note can change the whole tone of a message.<br /><br />There are some so neutral that I wonder why people bother writing them at all, like "Best", "Cheers" (I hate that one), "Regards".<br /><br />Then there are those that are friendly but still pretty neutral (however better than the above): "Take care", "See you soon", "Till later", "Stay in touch", in Spain "besos" (kisses), or "abrazo"(hug).<br /><br />Then there are the common but warm ones that no matter how unoriginal they are, it's just awesome when you read them at the end of a personal note: "Love", "Much love", "Lots of love", "I miss you", "Fondly", "Thinking of you", "Pxx", "Yours" -- one of my bosses when I wrote for <a href="; used to sign off with "Yours". Coming from a boss (who I'd never met), I first thought it was weird, but then I grew to like it and it opened my relationship with him. In Spain you have ones like "amor" (love) and "con cariño" (with affection). I'm not much of a romantic but I'm a sucker for warm sign offs.<br /><br />Then there are the creative ones -- which no matter what they mean, or are meant to mean -- are just awesome (well, most of them anyway). My brother signs off his emails to me "Lovelove" (I've stolen that from him and use it often too). There was a time in my life where I used to sign off "squillions of thoughts". Yeah...ugh. I think I also used to put a smiley face next to it. Super ugh, eh? (Oh do you know on my old passport my official signature has a smiley face under it? Omg. So embarrassing when I had to sign documents in the bank, or cheques, or anywhere.) Other ones like "missing you like madness"and "craving you" hit the spot but of course, they're very special sign offs.<br /><br />I have a co-worker who signs off "Chaufa". <span class="nfakPe">Chaufa</span> is chinese fried rice in South America, and since it sounds like "Ciao", a pretty novel way to sign off, I like it and use it often too.<br /><br />Lately I've been receiving emails from somebody who always signs off differently and like nothing I've received before. "Baisers" (best kisses in French?), "Inspiration 'n colors", "Tenderness 'n flavors". Yeah...oooooooooooooooo. I'm not thinking much of it but I think creative sign-offs are awesome, the more original, the better.<br /><br />Have any creative sign-offs to share?<br /><br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/08/weight-of-sign-offs.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-8185991595732591851Wed, 27 Aug 2008 12:32:00 +00002008-08-27T05:35:12.329-07:00lifethoughtsAnother "life is short" reminderFrom <a href=";: "Dave Freeman, the co-author of <a href=" <em>Things to Do Before You Die: Travel Events You Just Can't Miss</em></a> unexpectedly died on August 17. NOW.Two days ago, a Spanair flight from Madrid to the Canary Islands swerved off the runway, caught fire, and blew up. 153 of the 173 people on board died. A must read when you have some time.<br /><br />I've read his book "<a href=" Work Week</a>", and was <a href=" away</a>. As I wrote on <a href=";: "For those not familiar with the book: it inspires you to be part of the “new rich” who work 4-hours a week, are independent of location, and earn enough money to do whatever they want to, e.g. travel the world, speak Chinese, etc. It shatters the notion of the conventional rich, who slog their whole life to earn mountains of money, only to retire old and unfit to do anything they wanted to. A BMW is bought with their hard-earned money, the rest of which stays in the bank as the owner wiles away his retirement vegetating and getting fat on some beach, on the road to ultimate boredom."<br /><br />A quote from the article in the Journal: "Nothing bothers me more than sloth. Here are some tips that will change your luck on the dance floor:<br /><ul><li>Cut your nails. They HURT when you hold our hands and scratch us while dancing.<br /></li><li>We don't care if you sweat, but it's a big problem if you smell. Use deodorant, carry an extra shirt, and PLEASE chew gum.<br /></li><li>Listen to the music and enjoy it while you dance with us.<br /></li><li>We don't care how many complicated steps you know. Don't experiment dance-Twister with us.</li><li>We are more delicate than you realise. Don't treat us like rusted machinery that needs to be pulled and rammed to function. Be gentle.<br /></li><li>Try to realise when you step on our feet, and acknowledge it -- that makes it OK.<br /></li><li>Do not throw us up in the air. WE HATE THAT.</li><li>No more than 6 spins please. And after those spins, don't let go of us -- we are slightly dizzy and may fall.</li><li>It is fundamental you protect us from being hit and stomped on by other dancers close by. In other words, if there is limited space don't use us to make space.<br /></li><li>The first time you dance with us, keep a wee bit of personal space and don't try to shove your leg between ours. Odds are the second time we dance we will let you do that willfully. However, that does NOT mean we want to go home with you or even talk to you.</li><li>Don't try to feel us up, we are not stupid and we will tell the rest of the girls not to dance with you the creep.<br /></li><li>Don't try to give us a lesson while you dance with us. Pure, selfish, alone time. It's almost been liberating in a way. Like I'm allowing myself to be in a perpetual daze as I look for my "<a href=";. (Oh how I love that word).<br /><br />I'm a very gregarious person. I love to meet new people, I love to go out, I love to be doing a million social things at a time. But these days I'm just so content being with myself. And that doesn't necessarily mean being alone all the time. I've met more people in the last few weeks than I have in ages, and even transcended into new and special levels of friendship with some. But at all times, I've very much been with myself. It's like I've entered this pensive phase that I'm reveling in, and I know that I have to revel in it to get out of it. Dare I say it's been glorious in many ways.<br /><br />Madrid's calmness in August helps.<br /><br />I'm also realising that midst the beauty of change, how awesome it is to have a few permanent things. They won't always be permanent, but are for the time. I refer to them as permanent because they are very deeply and strongly rooted, hence not easy to change. There's a very warm and safe feeling about those things, and now I'm taking refuge in them by reconnecting and just being.<br /><br />I'm talking a completely different language today, eh? Well it's different to me too, and too darn vague for comfort. But I'm not rattled. <br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/08/alone-time-thoughts.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-4728504717053512889Thu, 07 Aug 2008 18:10:00 +00002008-08-07T11:15:45.706-07:00funnyteaching EnglishTeaching English in Japan :)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 393px; height: 296px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231840453174508226" border="0" /></a><br />Ok, ok, I know, we're all going to hell.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><br /></div>2008/08/teaching-english-in-japan.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-4940165529052791356Thu, 07 Aug 2008 10:19:00 +00002008-08-07T03:24:38.254-07:00coolDubainewsEmirates A380. I was given the privilege (?) to be seated next to him on the way to AND from the city.<br /><br />A madrile<span lang="es"><i>ñ</i></span>o, 32-years old, multicoloured piercing in chin, pop-rock singer/guitarist, filmmaker, novelist, and Osho follower, he was visiting his girlfriend in Valencia. He was decent company, and we had lots to talk about. We talked and talked. After about 8 hours of conversation, of course we exchanged numbers. Turns out he also lived down the road from me. What are the odds!<br /><br />Back in Madrid, he begins calling me. He calls and calls. And calls and calls. And calls and calls until the only way to stop him calling is to answer (<span style="font-style: italic;">super-pesado</span> as you would say in Spanish). The number of calls turned me off; I would answer one in 10 calls, and I never returned the others. Of course, because I was trying to avoid him, I would often bump into him at the post office, or tobacco shop, or local bar, where I would make a million excuses for not answering his million calls. I really didn't care though.<br /><br />A year of dodging his calls and bumping into him, a few months ago I ran into him with his girlfriend at the time, in the metro. We exchanged pleasantries and somehow ended up deciding to start playing tennis together.<br /><br />Getting back into the game has been the best thing I've done in a while. He makes for a great tennis partner; often annoying, but overall tolerable. The tennis works. He often brings friends to watch us play. Weird, but I don't care. They all seem nice and don't interfere. He keeps trying to get me to hang out after tennis, but honestly I have no interest.<br /><br />But his calls don't stop. He still calls and calls. He calls until I pick up. He speaks at a supersonic speed on the phone and I never understand what he says. I get sick of asking him to repeat himself, and after realising that he doesn't really say anything of consequence, I pretend I understand him and leave it at that. His conversations are normally about a movie he watched, tennis, his upcoming mini-vacation, and something about an "agency".<br /><br />Yesterday, slightly bored, when he called I decided to listen. He was on a job on behalf of this "agency" in Alicante, in a luxury villa, in a jacuzzi, with 3 girls. I was all ears.<br /><br />Me: "Who are these girls?"<br />Him: "Ah, some girls from the agency."<br />Me: "Urrr...ok."<br />Him: Yeah, I have to look after them and entertain them. They are really nice girls, so it's fun.<br />Me: "Right."<br />Him: "Why don't you come here for the weekend? It's a great place, lots of room. I have lots of time to chill, so yeah, come hang out."<br />Me: "Urrr...thanks for the invite. I will let you know if I fancy it. But didn't you say you are working?"<br />Him: "Well, yeah, but it's not really work you know. It's easy. And it pays well. It's helping me pay off my debts."<br />Me: "Cool. Well I hope the girls are hot atleast."<br />Him: "Yeah, they're young and pretty. In fact, you should consider being part of this agency."<br />Me: "Right."<br />Me: "I gotta go. Call me for tennis when you get back."<br />Him: "Cool. Have a great week."<br /><br />I hang up with him and try to understand what he's just told me. And then it registers, but with doubts, of course.<br />Is he a male prostitute?<br />Is he a pimp?<br />Is he looking after female prostitutes, or "luxury escorts", while they're on a job?<br /><br />He is a nice person. He isn't good-looking, or well-built, and is often on sedatives. He is a bit weird and moody at times but not threatening, or unpleasant. I am no one to judge him. If it works for him, good for him. I'm just happy I have a tennis buddy.<br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/08/gigolo.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-6146010486848317437Wed, 06 Aug 2008 10:41:00 +00002008-08-06T03:51:30.033-07:00ProcrastinationprogramsMy Wordle<a href="; title="Wordle: Abha's Wordle"><img src="; style="border: 1px solid rgb(221, 221, 221); padding: 4px; width: 172px; height: 133px;" /></a><br /><br />This is my <a href=";. It talks about what we, as a disgustingly consumerist society, are doing to our planet.<br /><br />It's a straightforward yet powerful presentation, which after watching (if you have any conscience) will stall you from shopping for a while, and hopefully make you think seriously about what you can do to help the dismal state of our Earth today.<br /><br />So get a cup of coffee and sit down to watch it. It will probably be the 2o most constructive minutes of your day.<br /><br />(Thanks Daveeeed for the link!)<br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/07/story-of-stuff.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-7209264453165482393Fri, 25 Jul 2008 14:30:00 +00002008-12-11T10:13:42.255-08:00articlescase-studiesWho said you can't be the successful product of your own business?<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5226963293167673042" border="0" /></a><br />I've been reading a certian <a href=" Allison's</a> blog religiously for about 2-years now. I've always found it entertaining -- both on an intellectual and emotional level, and the fact that it's so effing personal has kept me hooked. Call it a girl thing, or whatever. She updates her blog every day a few times and upto 20 times a day on Twitter, both of which I check on a daily basis after I read the news. And sometimes I even check her stuff a few times, she's great to procrastinate with. Yup, totally sucked in, and I'm not the only one.<br /><br />Check out a <a href=" article</a> documenting her self-promotion that has lead to her becoming an internet celebrity, even though she is a nobody. (Ouch. Harsh but true. Good for her.)<br /><br />I suppose her tremendous virtual tangibility is what keeps me hooked. Now she has her own business/website (<a href=";) with her two best friends, where they document the minutes of their life. It's brimming with constant updates, photos, videos and publicity stunts, and the initiative has lead them to get their own reality show. Whoa.<br /><br />It might not be your thing, but she's a great case study.<br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/07/who-said-you-cant-be-product-of-your.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-7248511102708261864Wed, 23 Jul 2008 20:40:00 +00002008-07-23T15:25:45.721-07:00quotesQuote for the day<span style="color: rgb(156, 156, 99);font-size:100%;" >"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson.2008/07/quote-for-day.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)
