In a survey of 1,000 small and medium-sized sellers (SMB Sellers) nationwide, nearly two-thirds (64%) of respondents that use online marketplaces reported that the marketplaces help their business compete with larger retailers, and half (50%) report significant savings ($20,000 or more annually) from using marketplace-provided integrated tools.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The survey found a majority of SMB Sellers use more than one online sales method. If not, they will be missing out on valuable leads, which means a negative impact on business—lost time, money and effort.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">“If you’re starting with bad lists, you won't get results and you just won't know why,” says Sky Cassidy, CEO of <a href=" Data</a>. “Maybe you're using one of these list companies that’s really good at sales but doesn’t know or care about data. They see an opportunity where they can write some code and it creates something they can sell. They're not really interested in having quality data beyond being able to sell it.”<br /><br />Adds Cassidy, “one key problem for email marketers: the reality that any list from a vendor is bound to be flawed. Marketers can’t be sure how names arrived on the list. For instance, some of them may have been taken from shared IP addresses that don’t require users to opt-in.”(1)<br /><br />According to Cassidy, “other lissts may have been derived from catch-all domains that collect improperly addressed emails or those sent to inactive users. Making matters worse, they won’t bounce back, so the senders never realize the data is bad.”(2)<br /><br />“Over 50 percent of the emails out there are on catch-all domains,” Cassidy explains. Reputable data companies—and there are some out there—work hard to scrub their lists and make sure they are highly targeted. A data provider worth its salt will use machine learning and proprietary data algorithms to ensure the accuracy of its lists.<br /><br />Best Email Practices: There are proven methods to make sure your email lists accomplish what they are intended to do, reach potential customers and positively influence their decisions. Some of the things Cassidy recommends are:<br />• Keep your email list clean.<br />• Build and maintain an opt-in list.<br />• Use a different email service provider to send cold campaigns than you use for your opt-in/newsletter campaigns.<br />• Don’t send emails too frequently to cold lists.<br />• Make it easy to opt-out.<br />“If marketers fail to put in the time to keep their lists up to spec, bad things can and probably will happen. More of the company’s email will end up in the spam folder. Click rates could plummet and a company could end up paying for bad names, says Cassidy.(4)<br /><br />“Unfortunately, it's not really easy to catch these types of bad data providers—that is garbage data providers,” Cassidy says.<br /><br />One way to boost the odds that you will get enough useful names is to cast a wider net and use multiple providers.<br /><br />That way marketers can measure one against the other and weed out the worst performers. “Have more than one data provider,” Cassidy says.  “That’s probably the cleanest way to do it ….If you're working with garbage data, you're going to get garbage results.”<br /><br />“Most of the data companies that peddle email marketing lists are selling junk,” according to Cassidy.<br /><br />Businesses and their marketing team need to be aware of this dirty data. I'm so ready! I can run fast and I'm pretty strong and I can swing a bat really hard and I can think on my feet. Zombies? No problem!" And then I read it and Whitehead did what eight episodes of searching for Sophia never could: it made the zombie apocalypse real and human and heartbreaking and so, so, so sad. In <i>Zone One</i> there are these zombies, stragglers, who aren't threatening or dangerous. They just return to somewhere that was significant in their lives and just stand there. Forever. One stands in a field like it's flying a kite. Another, a little girl with ponytails, sits stalled over a well-worn board game. A teenager holds his lacrosse stick in permanent repose in his teenage bedroom. They are like fetid coma patients who are frozen doing what they loved most – until the living must bash their brains in. The characters in <i>Zone One</i>, whether the protagonist, the enigmatic Mark Spitz, or the eternal optimist Kaitlyn or Gary who spoke in plurals, unable to shake the habit since his brothers died, are so wonderfully fleshed out that I felt every one of their pains in my bones. <i>Zone One</i> does for the zombie apocalypse what <i>The Road</i> did for the regular apocalypse: shines the faintest of lights into the depths of despair. It is not a drama, nor is it full of action, gangsters or Paz de la Huertas but like <i>Boardwalk</i>, it's still about building something from nothing. The novel is understated, unhurried, and phenomenal; it is a story of humanity. Unlike the show, it has all the elements of perfection and puts them to use, instead of letting an incredible cast and plot just fizzle out. Honestly, instead of watching <i>Boardwalk Empire</i>, everyone should just read <i>Growth of the Soil</i> instead. Here are a few of my favourite authors who will giving interviews and readings at the festival.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> </div> <a name='more'></a><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <b><a href=" Diaz</a> – </b>I get fluttery, bookish feelings when I see his name/face/books. He is the greatest and maybe I'm emotional because I have a headache but I feel like crying just thinking about his writing. His new book, <i>This is How You Lose Her</i>, is a collection of short stories that I've not read yet because I sometimes get off on withholding things from myself (also: I'm poor) but his other collection, <i>Drown</i>, and his novel <i>The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao</i> are mind-blowingly phenomenal. Just terrific.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <b><a href=" Munro</a> –</b> If I could grant immortality to one person (outside of loved ones) it would be to Alice Munro because I want her to just write forever. Selfish? Absolutely. Every one of her stories is a slow burning drama which in my expert opinion is the best kind of drama. Each character, each plot haunts my waking life (I'll never get Juliet and Penelope out of my head or Carla and that poor little goat, Flora). She is the masterclass of short fiction.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <b><a href=" Auster</a> –</b> Paul Auster writes in such a cool, unaffected style that I always forget about how much I love Paul Auster. His books are subdued and subtle but still steeped in depth and meaning. He is very much an "American Male Writer" but he remains, in my mind, separate from those other 'masculine' schools heralded by Hemingway and Fitzgerald and trumpeted by DeLillo and Ford and Salter – so overspent in sex and angst. His work often has overtones of noir (if not being outright detective novels as with The New York Trilogy) but always remains extremely meditative.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <b><a href=" Crosbie</a> –</b> A Canadian poet, Lynn Crosbie flays you open, pours in some salt then makes you laugh. Her poems are like my mum's back massages: they somehow dig beyond the muscles, between the tendons and are uncomfortable and painful. Unlike my mum's massages though, Crosbie's poems are therapeutic in their precision and offer commiseration after the hurt. Sorry mum – love you!&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <b><a href=" Erdrich</a>&nbsp;–</b> Louise Erdrich has the precision of a surgeon when it comes to laying bare the human condition. Her characters are painfully three-dimensional with all their dreams, hopes and flaws viscerally real. And the way she shows how devastating colonialism, racism and the various (and plentiful) systemic policies of oppression facing American Indian people have on communities and on individuals is nearly unrivalled in American literature. I just finished <i>Tracks</i> and I am already feeling like I need to go back and read it again as soon as possible.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <b><a href=" Ralston Saul</a> –</b> Are there scholarly, history-nerd, interested-in-Canadian-law Lefties who don't have brain crushes on John Ralston Saul? I didn't think so.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> And there are so, so, so many more amazing authors! Go see as many as you can! Students and youngsters under 25 get in free! Also happening in Toronto this weekend? The <a href="; film festival at the TIFF Lightbox! Lots of great looking movies/shorts to check out! It might be shrouded in coded language and denied by the Prime Minister but it is happening. <a href=" Woodworth, an anti-choice conservative MP for Kitchener-Waterloo proposed a private members motion (M-312) to create a committee whose purpose is to redefine personhood</a>. Canadian law considers a person to be a person once they check out of the womb by way of the vaginal canal. Woodworth thinks that it's a pretty dated definition considering the advances of modern medicine and science (science! Super important when taking away women and Trans* people's bodily autonomy! Meaningless when put up against creationism and climate change!) which, ok fair enough, the definition doesn't account for c-section births or the stork babies or cabbage patch kids but this isn't about being a stickler for medical science: it's about criminalizing abortion. The definition he's all grumpy about is found in <a href=" 223 of the Criminal Code, the section that defines homicide</a>. Make no mistake, if the definition of person is extended to fetuses, at all, abortion will be criminalized.<br /> <a name='more'></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The past week a number of MPs debated the motion and any illusion that anti-choicers are capable of coherent and rational thought was dispelled with <a href=" conservative Saskatchewan MP, David Anderson, comparing the current personhood laws to the way Nazis exterminated people with disabilities and to the struggles of African Americans</a>. Oh man.&nbsp;There is so much that is incredibly, sickeningly offensive about such comparisons like how they diminish the 400 years of systemic and institutionalized racism against African Americans and how they compare women to Nazis. I'll just repeat that:<i> An</i>&nbsp;<i>elected</i> <i>Member of Parliament thinks that women who need abortions are Nazis</i>. FUCKING NAZIS. If anyone ever needed proof of the hatred that forced-birthers have for women there it is: an abortion = genocide. I cannot even.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <a href=" Harper is on the record saying that he has no interest in reopening the abortion debate</a> and that Wednesday's vote will be a free vote. It should be comforting that the PM has vowed not to touch abortion with a ten-foot pole, given his record of lies, half-truths and double-speak believing him would be a bit like Aesop's fable about the scorpion and the frog – can't expect him to go against his nature (and his ideologies) even if it puts him at a mild risk (considering we've seen how apathetic majority of Canadians are to the Conservative's hijinx (lol election fraud wut) his hubris is hitting Achilles levels). And the free vote thing is equally disquieting, how many pro-choice conservatives are there? <a href=" Kenney, Citizenship and Immigration Minister and one of the PM's inner circle, sure isn't pro-choice</a> – he's on the record saying that he'll vote in favour of Woodworth's motion. In a cabinet as closely guarded and controlled as Stephen Harper's, I have a hard time believing that if the issue truly was closed and <i>not-to-be-opened-ever-ever-fingers-crossed-promise</i>&nbsp;that Kenney wouldn't have gotten the memo. Something tells me that Harper can just sit this one out and let his goons do his dirty work for him.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <div style="text-align: justify;"> You know who definitely qualifies for the personhood definition? I do. So does every other woman and every Trans* man and every other person with a uterus capable of bearing children – we are all people. We are people with lives and dreams and the ability to make decisions based on what is best for them and sometimes that decision is to have an abortion. It doesn't matter, ever, why someone gets an abortion. Maybe it's in an instance of rape or incest. Maybe it's because zie already has too many mouths to feed. Maybe it's because zie has cancer and needs chemotherapy. Maybe zie is financially unstable and has very little support. Maybe zie never wanted kids. Maybe zie is too young. Maybe zie is in an abusive relationship and hir partner tampered with their BC. Maybe zie suffers from mental illness and can't go off their medication. Maybe zie discovered that hir fetus has a terrible condition ensuring that it will live an extremely short, extremely painful life and so needs to get a late-term abortion. Maybe zie just got drunk and had unprotected sex. There are thousands of reasons why people need abortions but ultimately it is no one else's business. &nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> I think that what anyone who is on the fence or who has never really thought much about abortion really needs to consider is why every single anti-choice argument is so deeply steeped in severe misogyny. Think about why it's women and Trans* bodies that are constantly being threatened with regulation, not cis men. The hypocrisy of the conservatives are trying to regulate my body while decrying any sort of government regulations for corporations in a bid to appear small government would be laughable if it wasn't so goddamn soul-crushing. Think about the language – both spoken and implied – that describes women who need abortions, language that dehumanizes and slut-shames and is paternalistic and ascribes sexist tropes like the 'irresponsible tramp'. Think about how if children are so valued and cherished, they are also supposed to be a punishment for loose women who don't use birth control. Think about how little support there is for low income families, for childcare, for education, for Indigenous children, for children with disabilities, for Children of Colour, for new Canadian children – I'll believe it's really about the children the day that there is equal ferocity for the support for existing families.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Think about how women are expected to martyr themselves to their children – think of every movie and TV show that shows a woman giving her life for her unborn child, think of the message those tropes send: women are less valuable than their children, even than their fetuses. And that is the message that forced-birthers believe. As a woman and in the eyes of anti-choicers, not only am I defined by my uterus but they also want to tell me what to do with it (keep it filled with babeez all the time). That's not fucking right. It's nothing but the desire to degrade and control dressed up as religious handwringing.&nbsp;</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> I will send a bag of cookies to anyone who can explain an anti-choice position to me that doesn't end back up at severe misogyny because the usual, standby arguments I hear are steeped in woman-hating bullshit.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> I am pro-choice. I still love letter writing and follow letter writing news and blogs with great interest.<br /> <br /> That's what prompted me to finally find the time to blog today...a news story about a letter. <a href="; target="_blank">The article is on the Indianapolis Star newspaper's website, www.indystar.com, and was written by Will Higgins.</a><br /> <br /> It is a testimony to the power that a simple letter can hold.<br /> <br /> I encourage you to read the article. But, I'll give you a brief overview of the letter and the story: Frank Grunwald was 11 years old when his mother and brother were sent to the gas chamber Auschwitz. As she was about to be killed, Vilma Grunwald scribbled down a few sentences in a letter to her husband. Amazingly, the guard she gave the letter to delivered it to Kurt Grunwald, a fellow concentration camp prisoner.<br /> <br /> The letter has survived all of these years and has been donated to the <a href="; target="_blank">United States Holocaust Museum</a> in Washington, D.C. The museum's chief acquisitions curator thinks that it could be the only one of its kind in existence.<br /> <br /> The letter is powerful. It is poignant. It is, at once, heartbreaking and inspiring.<br /> <br /> The story is something we all need to keep in mind when we think a text or even an email is good enough to get our point across.<br /> <br /> Read the story. That set celebrates the bond between the United States and Japan on the centennial of the gift of dogwood trees from the United States to Japan in 1915. The letter was presented as correspondence from President Abraham Lincoln, offering his condolences on the deaths of her five sons in the Civil War. Controversy has surrounded the letter since it was first received. And this week, Time magazine's website features an article by Lily Rothman, Time history and archives editor, regarding the latest research on the letter.<br /> <br /> According to Time, a working group at the Center for Forensic Linguistics at Aston University in Birmingham, England, has been using forensic linguistics to solve the mystery about who really wrote the letter.<br /> <br /> As a 1995 article in the "Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association" explains, the situation was full of drama from the beginning. Not only did Mrs. Bixby not have five sons die in the war, but she was a Southern sympathizer and reportedly tore up the letter shortly after receiving it. Apparently, before it was delivered to Mrs. Bixby, though, the letter was shared with the <i>Boston</i> <em data-reactid="245">Evening Transcript</em> and the <i>Boston Evening Traveller</i>, which published it. That's how we know about it today. The copy that is known today, pictured above, is thought to be a copy of a forgery.<br /> <br /> But, the issue that has brought 21st century technology together with 19th or 20th century handwriting is the true author of that letter. It is possible -- and even likely, according to the Time article -- that Lincoln's secretary, John Hay wrote the letter. The group that has been researching the letter will present a paper on the topic at the ninth International Corpus Linguistics Conference at the University of Birmingham in Birmingham, England, on Wednesday, July 26.<br /> <br /> They compared the writing of Lincoln and Hay to that of the letter to determine who actually wrote it. Although that concept has been around for quite some time, the use of computer technology makes it even more certain that Hay wrote the letter for Lincoln.<br /> <br /> You can read the <a href="; target="_blank">Time article here</a> and the <a href="; target="_blank">Journal of the Abraham Lincoln Association article here</a>. "Working in a realistic style that defied artistic trends, Wyeth created haunting and enigmatic paintings based largely on people and places in his life, a body of work that continues to resist easy or comfortable interpretation," the USPS news release states.<br /> <br /> The set of stamps each features a detail from a different Andrew Wyeth painting. The paintings are: “Wind from the Sea” (1947), “Big Room” (1988), “Christina’s World” (1948), “Alvaro and Christina” (1968), “Frostbitten” (1962), “Sailor’s Valentine” (1985), “Soaring” (1942–1950), “North Light” (1984), “Spring Fed” (1967), “The Carry” (2003), “Young Bull” (1960), and “My Studio” (1974). The selvage, or area outside of the stamp images, shows a photograph of Wyeth from the 1930s. Art director Derry Noyes of Washington, DC, designed the pane.<br /> <br /> Wyeth, who finished his last completed painting just a few months before his death, received the Congressional Gold Medal in 1990 and the National Medal of Arts in 2007. Many of the areas that aren't forecast for hot weather likely are expecting storms, or at least rain today. And, it's not just in the U.S. that it's a hot summer.&nbsp; I'm getting reports from Postcrossing participants -- via their postcards and comments on the postcards I send them -- that it's quite warm in parts of Europe and Asia, as well.<br /> <br /> What I'm getting at is that if you end up spending time indoors today to escape the heat or the storms -- or cold in the southern hemisphere -- this is a great time to write a letter or two. We lived about an hour away.</div> <div class="MsoNormal"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> According to <a href="; target="_blank">Lisa Lamb’s article</a> on the Amarillo Globe-News’ website, there were two parts to the Saturday event. Area residents brought their World War I memorabilia to be considered for inclusion in the museum’s collection, and a program on Letters From Home highlighted the importance of letter writing during World War I. Additionally, visitors had the opportunity to write a letter to today’s U.S. military members through the Operation Gratitude project.</div> <div class="MsoNormal"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> After reading that story, I tracked down Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit organization in California. The group’s online media kit says that they send care packages and letters of support to individual soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines deployed in harm’s way, to their children left behind, and to first responders, veterans, new recruits, military families, wounded heroes and their caregivers. Starting in 2003, they have sent 1,784,080 care packages so far.</div> <div class="MsoNormal"> <br /></div> <div class="MsoNormal"> Those care packages include a variety of items, including letters. According to the Operation Gratitude website, they have sent 5 million hand-written letters. I now question why I didn't buy bigger hooks a decade or two ago. I always bought the cheap aluminum hooks because they were the cheapest of course, but for a couple dollars more they beef up those handles. Why do those hook makers feel when I'm crocheting delicate thread it's perfectly acceptable to shorten the hook that's already the size of pencil lead? I don't get it. I was crocheting snowflake ornaments last Christmas. The hook was tiny so I baked it with&nbsp;<a href="; target="_blank">Sculpey polymer clay</a>&nbsp;wrapped around the handle. I didn't get any pictures while we were covered in foam because it was insane. Initially it was cool to see all the pink and green/yellow foam flying in the air over the crowd. The kids thought the foam was awesome. Kaitlyn Joy wanted to roll around in the bubbles. Meanwhile we adults kept rubbing our eyes. Think about it, foam is made from soap. Soap and eyes don't mix. Do you remember the pain from the last time you got shampoo in your eyes? Yeah... not cool. At one point I grabbed Kaitlyn Joy and blindly lead her out of the crowd and away from the foam machines. Although we enjoyed running the race with our friends, it's the first and last time I'll be doing a foam run. I don't mind running sticky, having soapy shoes, nor having my skin turn pink from the soap dye, but when you're in a crowd having foam blown on you it's shockingly suffocating. When you inhale foam and even for a moment feel like your drowning, it's quite frightening. By the time the race began we were pink and all my make-up had been washed off by the foam. We were stormed on after stepping out of the foam which was perfect timing to get all the soap out of our eyes. Despite taking three rounds of swim lessons when she was&nbsp;4-6 years old, Kaitlyn Joy began the summer doing what looked like controlled drowning. It was seriously sad. She definitely improved a lot an even managed to win a couple ribbons. They have&nbsp;a wonky rule that each team will only receive three ribbons for each race, 1st-6th.&nbsp; There were times when she came in 4th, but didn't get a ribbon because 1st-3rd were her teammates. Oh well... Next year she plans on bringing home more ribbons.
