It was the first memory wall in over 4 months and certainly the first of 2014. When I look back on 2013 there is much pride and satisfaction with the wall. I wrote it out 8 times: Fort Worth The Alamo MLB game Christian Concert Willie Nelson’s 4th of July picnic Fundraising banquet to honor the fallen TCU football game I learned so much during 2013 writing the wall. One of the most surprising things for me was the reaction the wall would get. My friend and coach, former US Navy SEAL TC Cummings predicted the families would stand at the wall for hours in anticipation of seeing their loved one’s name being written on the wall. I brushed this off as not plausible but TC was right and it was an honor for me that was repeated many times. I also learned from my errors. During the construction of the wall the builders suggested that I have the wall pre numbered so I don’t have to write the numbers each time. I scoffed at this and said I needed to write the numbers each time. What a mistake that was. I didn’t take into account that it might take 2 seconds to write each number especially when you get to the 4 digit numbers. Those 2 seconds times 2,300 = 4,600 seconds or 77 minutes or 1 HOUR 17 MINUTES! In reality I think it takes me a little longer, maybe 1.5 to 2 hours. I am taking many lessons into 2014 as I write the wall. On March 17, the day before the wall in Fort Hood I picked up my dad and we drove 2.5 hour drive. He was going as my helper this time. He served in the Army in the late 60s early 70s and was stationed in Korea. He was a military police officer. He had been in ROTC in high school and the military was a natural transition for him. He served around 3 years I think. Honestly I never asked but I do know as a kid his military uniform was my favorite clothes to wear. I would put his gear on and roll around in the backyard hunting for Viet Cong. It was my Halloween uniform, my play uniform, my lay around the house uniform and today at nearly age 40 I still have those uniforms in my possession. Although, I no longer wear them. After the military my dad went on to serve 40 years as a police officer in Texas and those uniforms I also wore. I sported the police uniform a few times for Halloween in my 20s and 30s and turns out it was a terrible uniform. The last thing folks want to see when they are drinking is an authentic police uniform walking around the party. The drive to Fort Hood my dad and I talked about the military, the wall, the family and life in general. It was a good time to catch up and spend time talking. I was grateful for the help and I know he was happy to go. He has much respect for anyone who serves in the military as I do. He knows what it takes. He has been there and done that and knows serving in the military in this country is a choice. At any given time 1% of the population is serving. That’s it. 1%. To borrow a slogan from the Marines…the few…the proud and we all are proud of our service. It’s a life long bond. The trip down to Fort Hood my GPS suggested one way and my dad’s GPS suggested…well…the right way. We went through all the back road Texas towns somehow thanks to my GPS and by the time I realized it I was too committed to the route to turn around. We arrived at Fort Hood via the back gate because of this. When we arrived we had maybe 3 miles of gas left in the tank and the worse news was that it was the wrong gate for visitors. We were instructed to turn around and find the front entrance. I knew we wouldn’t make it and that is when my dad and I pulled out all the stops with the Sgt at the gate telling them about the wall and what we were doing. They called our hosts on base and soon we were on our way. We set the wall up the night before and I wrote out the numbers the night before. It saves tremendous time. The next morning I met my dad at 0645 in the lobby of the hotel and we set out for Fort Hood a few miles away. I was rested and ready to go. It was a unique feeling writing the wall at Fort Hood knowing that many would know the names on the wall. There was less traffic or overall people at the wall because it was a military base and everyone had jobs to do. Plus, I don’t think the base publicized it very well. But I was grateful to be there. Like any other Memory Wall I have done it started with just my helper and this time that was my dad, at 8am writing the first line. The first line of the wall I will write: WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq In a way it is my way of honor the hero’s from other conflicts but it was not intended to be that way. When I started memorizing the wall in 2012 the first step was to print out the name. I did this with an excel spreadsheet and every hero was assigned a number. What I didn’t realize is that the first row (#1) didn’t contain a name of a fallen hero. Instead that row had the column headers : RANK, FIRST NAME, LAST NAME This meant the first person on my wall, MSgt Evander Andrews was actually assigned to #2. By the time I realized this I was over 100 names into the memory process and I certainly wasn’t going to start over. So I just accepted the fact that there would be no one assigned to #1. The first time I wrote out the wall (Feb 28, 2013) I simply skipped #1 and wrote #2 and left the #1 spot blank. All throughout the day people would walk by and discussing the hidden meaning behind that. Was it for a top secret spy that I couldn’t mention his name? Was it left for a special hero I would write last? What was the meaning? That is when I decided to put an end to that speculation and turned this into a positive. I now use that space to honor the fallen in previous conflicts. At Fort Hood we had many special moments. An Army veteran who lost 10 friends showed up and left in tears. The tv crew that was there to do a story really capitalized on him being there and handed him the book asking him to look up his friends and to quiz me on what number they were on the wall. It was awkward for me and I know the tv crew meant no harm but these were his friends he watched die in battle and the tv crew was turning it into a game. The tv guys are incredibly good guys and they certainly meant no harm but they just didn’t understand. The veteran eventually broke down in tears and left the wall. My cousin made this error once as well. I was talking with a guy at the MLB baseball game who had a friend on the wall and was near tears. My cousin asked him if he would like his picture with me. They guy just walked away. I know my cousin meant no harm but sometimes folks start seeing the wall as a memory demonstration with me as the star and not a tribute to hero’s with the names on the wall as the focus. I understand it but I am uncomfortable with it and I am very aware that the veterans who show up don’t see it as a memory demonstration. They see their friends. That day Sgt Perkins stood at the wall for hours with his family as he waited for me to write his friends names. A woman showed up who served with Spc Shawn Muhr and searched out his name. Another was an Army wife whose husband has made it back. He role when her husband was deployed was to keep in contact with all the wives. She also searched out one of her husband’s friends. That day at Fort Hood I really sped through the names and finished in record time. 8 hours. Partly because the crowds were lighter and fewer interruptions, partly because I wrote out the numbers the night prior and partly because I had spent the previous 10 days immersed in reviewing the names. That night my dad and I with the help of the TV crew loaded up the wall and drove back to Fort Worth. This time we listened to my dad’s GPS and soon I would be in my own bed relaxing after another satisfying day. /2014/03/28/afghanistan-wall-fort-hood/feed/ 0 Afghanistan Memory Wall 2014 Update /2014/01/23/afghanistan-memory-wall-2014-update/ /2014/01/23/afghanistan-memory-wall-2014-update/#comments Thu, 23 Jan 2014 03:23:29 +0000 /?p=892 This time last year (Jan 22nd, 2013), I was 5 weeks away from writing out my first Afghanistan Memory Wall. Yet… I had never fully written out the wall. I didn’t even have the wall fully memorized I didn’t have a WALL I had NO IDEA how to get a wall made I had 2 things: 1. A belief it could be done and I had been training to do it for 9 months 2. The City of Ft Worth had placed their faith in me that I could do it and agreed to give me space Feb 28, 2013 Other than that I had nothing. I had gone to the city offices in Ft Worth and handed them a book and said, ‘Pick a number between 1 and 1000’. They said a number and I said the name of the fallen hero in my book under that number. That coupled with some of my tv appearances was all they needed to believe I could do it. Fast forward one year. On this date January 22nd, 2014 I have 5 wall events already scheduled! NASCAR race Kansas Speedway May 9-10 NASCAR race New Hampshire Speedway July 11-13 NASCAR race Atlanta Motor Speedway Aug 30-31 NFL Football game Oakland Raiders Nov 2014 Armed Forces Bowl Dec 2014 There is no doubt in my mind that we will surpass the total number for 2013 (7). I hope to do this 10-15 times in 2014 and continue to honor the troops in a powerful way. We are still seeking a national sponsor to help with the costs of these wall events. To drive the wall to New Hampshire and back will be $2,000 in gas alone. If you have contacts with a major corporation, tell them that they would get massive exposure. That company then could also make a video like this that would surely go viral and also promote their company in a positive way.I promise to keep honoring the fallen as long as my brain is healthy. NOT FORGOTTEN!! /2014/01/23/afghanistan-memory-wall-2014-update/feed/ 1 Veterans Day /2013/11/11/veterans-day/ /2013/11/11/veterans-day/#respond Mon, 11 Nov 2013 21:03:15 +0000 /?p=884 It was Veterans Day one year ago that I announced the Afghanistan Memory Wall project. I had been memorizing since May 1st but I hadn’t gone public with it yet because frankly, I didn’t know if I could do it. 7,000 words memorized in sequence with no pattern (it wasn’t in alphabetical order). So for 6 months I had memorized with only a handful knowing what I was tackling. Then on Veteran’s Day 2012 I released a Youtube video telling the world what I was doing. When I made the video I had no idea to what to expect. Up until this point everyone that knew about the project (less than 10) would ask me: Where will you do it? Where will you get the wall? Can you do it? Are you sure? I had none of these questions answered. I would reply, ‘I don’t know. All I know is if when I write the names it is just me and the wall in a field somewhere and no one knows about it or sees it that will be enough for me. I would have said to the guys on the wall. You are not forgotten.’ Well….this wasn’t even close to what happened. One friend even suggested by saying, ‘Ron that is so nice of you to want to do but maybe instead of memorizing the names you can just hold the book in your hand and write down the names while reading the book.’ It was a nice thought, but NO WAY. This was to say, ‘You are not FORGOTTEN!’ I had to memorize it and by Veterans Day I was about 300-400 names away and feeling confident I could handle the task. On the video I announced that I would write the names in January or February. I figured January would be easy. Turns out it wasn’t. I ended up scheduling the first wall writing for Feb 28th. It was the last possible day I could do the wall and still keep my word and do it in January or February and I needed every single one of those extra days. By Christmas time, I set up a series of white dry erase boards in my office and I would spend HOURS a day up here just writing the names from memory. The first time I did it I had over 10% errors (spelling errors or forgetting names). There is no way I would be happy with 10% errors. I couldn’t write 7,000 words and have 700 misspelled. So I just kept writing over and over and over again. It is how I spent December, January and February. The good news is once I misspelled a word it would stick stronger in my mind and I didn’t miss that one again. I set a target of 4% errors would be acceptable. So I wrote and wrote and wrote. I worried….would my arm get tired? So I did push ups as well. 3 weeks out I didn’t have a wall!! I had a date set but no wall. I sent out an urgent email on Facebook and ultimately found a company to design the PERFECT wall for the writing. It looks like a permanent structure. Here is a secret – When February 28th arrived: I had notified the media, gotten permission from the City of Fort Worth, notified my family and friends and invited everyone out to a celebration at my place afterwards. Here is the secret. I had never written it out from start to finish before. Oh sure, in my office I had written for 4-8 hours at a time. But I never did it completely. So on that day, February 28th 2013 I wrote out the wall for the first time in public and for the first time all the way through. The emotions of that day are still very real to me and I have goose bumps right now thinking about it. I met moms and dads of the fallen that day that I know will be life long friends I embraced them and shook hands with a Lieutenant who knew Lance Cpl Cody Childers and I humbly watched him just stare at that kids name for what seemed liked an hour. When the end of the day arrived it was getting dark (I had started at 7:30am) and I still wasn’t done. A man asked my cousin and helper, Donovan, ‘What will he do if it gets dark?’ My cousin replied, ‘I don’t know. We hadn’t planned for that.’ I was unaware this conversation was taking place but according to my cousin an hour later industrial lights (like you see on highway construction sites at night) were set up and ready to be deployed. My cousin didn’t get his name but just said, ‘He seemed to be a man who was used to making things happen.’ Another man in a nice suit and cowboy hat walked by my mom while I was writing the names, pointed to me and said, ‘If I ever need a man to find me some oil that is who I would call.’ I had set a goal of 4% errors, when the wall was checked the next day there was only 27 errors a .003 error rate. At the end of the day I barely beat the light and when I wrote the last 20 names my eyes were filling with tears and my hand was shaking. I had done it. I had fulfilled my vision. In a very emotional moment, I took a few steps back, got in the center of the wall and rendered a salute to the wall which lasted for about 45 seconds. The vision was completed. I had pulled it off. More importantly the heroes were honored. Not forgotten. /2013/11/11/veterans-day/feed/ 0 I Think it Was Katzenberger, But Actually it is All of Them /2013/07/18/i-think-it-was-katzenberger-but-actually-it-is-all-of-them/ /2013/07/18/i-think-it-was-katzenberger-but-actually-it-is-all-of-them/#respond Thu, 18 Jul 2013 01:17:24 +0000 /?p=871 As you can imagine, when I am standing at the wall and I am writing the names for 10-12 hours so many things are going on and happening during the day. It is a challenge just to keep focused on the task at hand and that is simply to write the 2,200 names from memory (rank, 1st name, last name; 7,000 words). Often, conversations will take place during the day and I have trouble placing them with the correct name. For example, someone may say, ‘He was from Kansas’ and then 3 hours later I wonder, ‘What name did they say was from Kansas again?’ This occurred on the 4th of July at Willie Nelson’s picnic. A woman came up to me in tears and asked to find a name. I think she asked for Staff Sgt Jeremy Katzenberger. If it wasn’t her then it was another woman that day that asked me to find Jeremy’s name on the wall. What I don’t know is I am remembering the correct woman. She was in tears that day and the name she wanted to find was the name of the warrior who saved her brother’s life on ‘numerous occasions’ as she stated. She was in tears talking about the man who had given his life and now her brother was safe at home. She told me that this warrior would carry her brother’s equipment because in her words, ‘my brother is small.’ She stood in tears touching the man’s name who carried her brother’s gear. I know for a fact this occurred, what I am having trouble recalling is if it was Staff Sgt Jeremy Katzenberger’s name she was looking at that day. I don’t know if he was the one because my mind was handling so much information that day. When I realized I was ‘t 100% sure about the details of this story I was disappointed because I want to recall the story of the wall accurately to retell and share here. Then it hit me, it doesn’t matter if the name she was looking at was Jeremy Katzenberger or not. Because the story she told of another man carrying the load is the story of all the men and women on this wall. They all carried the load for all of us so we could be safe at home. They all carried the load to be strong for us. They all paid the ultimate sacrifice while carrying the load for a nation. Was she pointing at Jeremy’s name that day? I can’t recall. But is it who Jeremy Katzenberger is? You better believe it is. It’s who they ALL are. Maybe it’s best I can’t remember the name, because it is all of the names /2013/07/18/i-think-it-was-katzenberger-but-actually-it-is-all-of-them/feed/ 0 Every Wall Writing is Tough, But This One Was Brutal /2013/06/30/every-wall-writing-is-tough-but-this-one-was-brutal/ /2013/06/30/every-wall-writing-is-tough-but-this-one-was-brutal/#comments Sun, 30 Jun 2013 20:39:44 +0000 /?p=851 It is hard to say which Afghanistan Memory Wall tribute was the toughest: The first one (Feb 28, 2013) had so much emotion and dynamics in it: I didn’t know where/how I was going to get wall built as late as Feb 10 and the date set for 1st wall was Feb 28. Intense! I’d never done it. I had written out 25-30% at a time in my office practicing but never in front of anyone and never 100% straight through. I didn’t know if I could do it I had invited all my friends and family plus the press. It was a big stage for something I had never done I had sacrificed so much to get there. The previous year, time with family and friends was few and far between because of my dedication to the wall. NYC on Fox News (April 4, 2013) had it’s own challenges. It was being done for Fox News morning show Fox and Friends and they wanted me to end at 8:45am live on their show. This meant I had to start at 10pm the previous night! I adjusted my sleep schedule the days prior but working through the night was a challenge. Combine that with my laptop being stolen literally 50 feet from me at 6am and you have a challenging time to focus. San Antonio and Phoenix, well they were tough but nothing compared to 1st time and NYC and nothing compared to yesterday: June 29th at Southfork Ranch, ‘Celebrate Freedom’ concert. Just days prior my dad had called me to tell me to – wear sunscreen, wear the boonie style hat like I wore in Afghanistan to protect from heat and drink plenty of Gatorade. I knew he was right but I didn’t know how right until I got there. The Weather statistics from June 29, 2013. At the peak it was 101 Just one hour into it I knew it was going to be tough. I started writing at 8:15am and by 9:20 I was already light headed. It wasn’t even the heat of the day yet and my brain couldn’t focus. I was looking at names that I had written as if I was seeing them for the first time. I was constantly doubting if I was spelling the names correctly and going blank on more than a few. I downed 2 Gatorades by 11am and I knew the worst of the heat was still to come. The last 3-4 months I have been on a fairly strict diet and almost no junk and low carbs but I was so light headed I felt I needed food in me. I sent my cousin Donovan to get me a Chick-Fil-A sandwhich at a booth down from me (Also special thanks to Julie Gillespie, Jordan and Valoree Murray for coming out to support). It is rare that I will check the book I have the names written in (what I memorized) but in the first thousand names I must have walked over to the book 5-6 times to check a name. You may think checking 5-6 names out of 1000 is not a lot and maybe it isn’t. But I never have to check. At 2-3pm Donovan was spraying me down with sunscreen and making sure I was hydrated. I must have consumed 4 full size Gatorades and a Powerade bought by a bystander and not to be graphic but I didn’t take a bathroom break for 10 hours. My body was using all the fluids it could handle. The highest temperature of the day was 101 at 2:45 and although I didn’t have a temperature gauge, I certainly knew it. As the end of the day approached I had met the cousin of SPC Christopher Horton. He was a sniper who was killed in his sleep by an enemy who had snuck onto the base. He took a bullet to the knee, chest and face and was instantly gone. I met a brave Marine who knew 2 names on the wall as he was in the vehicle with them when they hit the IED. The pastor of Sgt Enrique Mondragon came by to tell me about Enrique and his family. 1LT Robert Welch had many stop by as they told me of his wife and 2 kids. As I heard these stories and my body was physically and mentally drained I knew this day was nothing compared to the last day each of these names experienced. My challenges with the heat were nothing compared to what our troops were experiencing at that exact moment in Afghanistan. As I reminded myself of my relatively ‘easy day’ I simply guzzled fluids and pressed on. I wrote the last name around 7:30pm. It was almost 12 hours of writing. The heat had staggered me, slowed me down and drained me but there was enough in the gas tank to complete the 5th Afghanistan Memory Wall and still enjoy the concert and fireworks display to come. Toughest day of writing the wall? Yes. Mother nature can break the knees of any man. We are not as strong as we think we are when we encounter the steady, robust and unyielding forces of our environment but still an ‘easy day’ in the greater perspective. /2013/06/30/every-wall-writing-is-tough-but-this-one-was-brutal/feed/ 1

I retied it as quick as I could and off I went running.

A couple tenths in there was a hill. I ran up the hill, but once at the top my shins and calves were screaming at me! I kept running hoping they would work themselves out, but they kept on. After half a mile I started to walk. There were several walkers in this race and they were all passing me once I started walking. I couldn't even walk at a normal speed my legs hurt so bad.

I walked a mile and a half and when I got to the 2 mile mark, my legs had finally stopped hurting and I decided I would run slowly the rest of the way in. Jeremy met me with about a half a mile to go and ran the rest of the way with me. I finished about 4-5 minutes slower than when I ran the whole distance two weeks before. I'm not sure if that's good or not. 2013/11/not-as-good-as-before.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Crystal)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007459881154237853.post-6992628626732006655Wed, 13 Nov 2013 02:52:00 +00002013-11-12T21:52:20.862-05:00It's Been Awhile.... Lots to Update*After the half in May I took another break from running. I despise running in the heat, so I didn't.

*In late July/early August I did sign up for a 6 week water boot camp. I loved this class. It really worked my arms and was a lot of fun. With school starting back in September though I did not sign up for the next session.

*Since boot camp has been over I have ran/walked a couple times.

*I drove one of our team vans for Bourbon Chase. It was a 15 passenger van. I was a little nervous, but she drove like a dream. We had a blast!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="; width="320" />

*On November 2nd Jeremy was doing a full marathon in Indianapolis, so I decided to do the 5k to kill some time while I was waiting for him. I ran the whole 5K on no training. I was slow, but did not walk one time! I am meeting a couple girls from work in the morning start the couch to 10k program with them.

*I signed up for another 5k this Saturday. :) Will run it all again. I'm really trying to not focus on my times. I enjoy running much more when I'm not competitive with myself.

*Jeremy did awesome in his full!! He broke 4 hours, which he has wanted to do since he started training for his first full!

*Lacey is a running machine and has ran a few races. She loves to go running with Jeremy and gets very excited when he starts putting on his tennis shoes.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

*She just had her first birthday on November 1. It's hard to believe it has almost been a year since she has been with us.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="320" />

I plan to post more now that I'm going to be running more. We are planning on a full/half in March in Tennessee. Plus we are definitely doing a full/half in Hawaii in June and we might add another full/half in the fall maybe Georgia or Illinois. Three in one year may be pushing it though, we will see.

2013/11/its-been-awhile-lots-to-update.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Crystal)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007459881154237853.post-5663365556051554011Mon, 10 Jun 2013 15:07:00 +00002013-06-10T11:07:18.402-04:0027 Hour Tri RecapOur team name for the tri was "Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive, and Dodge". Our team captains brought dodgeballs and we made signs to hang on our tent. See our team picture at the bottom of the post.

The 27 hour started Friday morning at 6am, thankfully in a heated outdoor pool. There were 5 of us there and we each swam 30 minutes to complete the 2.5 hour swim portion.

Next was the 12.5 hour bike. The course was on the Legacy Trail in Lexington and was absolutely gorgeous! It was a 5 mile out and 5 back that looped around right in front of our team area so we could switch in and out as we needed too. Not having been on a bike in over a year my butt was seriously sore after my first bike portion. I rode again the last 20 minutes when the sun was setting. I took a picture because like I said earlier it was beautiful.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

When the 12 hour run started our team walked the route together to know where it went, since the majority of this portion would be in the dark. About 10pm or so I got in my sleeping bag on the ground and dozed on and off for a few hours. I got up around 3am and walked 2 miles. The last 20 minutes of the tri we walked the route again as a team to the finish line. We were all still smiling when it was over!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

The reason it is 27 hours is for the 27 million people still enslaved around the world. At the end of the month there will be the new numbers of how many people are enslaved. The race director will let us know after the report has come out how long the tri will be next year. We are hoping the number hasn't risen. 2013/06/27-hour-tri-recap.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Crystal)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007459881154237853.post-9038723448019349733Mon, 03 Jun 2013 18:08:00 +00002013-06-03T14:08:38.492-04:00A short break.....Since the half I have taken a short break. I have walked one day in the last two weeks and have not run at all. Which probably wasn't a good idea considering this weekend I am participating in a 27 hour triathlon. There is a team of 8 of us and we each take turns for 27 hours swimming, biking, and running. It is a 2.5 hour swim, 12.5 hour bike and a 12 hour run. The swim is in a pool and there is a The nice thing is you can break it up among the people on your team however you want as long as there is only one person on the course at a time.

I am meeting a friend tonight, who is also on the team, to swim. I haven't swam or biked since March and then it was just for the indoor triathlon I did. Which if you remember was the first time I had done either since before I broke my ankle. The bike loop is 10 miles so I figure I can do a loop, rest a few hours then do another one since my bum won't be ready to ride a bike for any length of time.

2013/06/a-short-break.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Crystal)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007459881154237853.post-1546197361516304614Tue, 28 May 2013 16:59:00 +00002013-05-28T12:59:01.754-04:00Woodford Wag 2K, Baseball, Beach Boys, and John StamosSaturday Jeremy and I took Lacey to the Woodford Wag. There was a 5k for people only and a 2k for people and their pets. Jeremy did the 5k and I did the 2K with Lacey. Jeremy came in 2nd in his age group and the award was a dog tag. Very fitting. Lacey was a bit shy around the other dogs, but once we started walking she was fine. On the way home she was one tired pup. Jeremy is a huge Packers fan and ever since one of my best friends moved back to Wisconsin two years ago it has been on our list to do.

We left Thursday after lunch and drove 10 hours to Katie's house. She lives 20 minutes from Green Bay so it worked out perfectly to stay with her and also to not have to get a hotel room the night before the race.

Friday we went and toured Lambeau Field, which was also where packet pick up and the expo were.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

Saturday we did some sightseeing. We drove up and saw Lake Michigan. Wisconsin is so flat and miles and miles of farmland. We ate early and went to bed early.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

Sunday we got up and go to the race about an hour before it started. Katie originally was going to do the half with her boyfriend but lack of training and farmwork kept him from participating, so Katie (who had not done more than 6 miles) was going to do the half with me.

The first 8 miles we ran 7 minutes, walked 2 minutes. After mile 8 though my back started tightening up and it got warm out! We walked the last 5 miles. Of course we talked the whole time, which was great! Before the finish line, you run in the tunnel of Lambeau Field and run a lap around the stadium before heading back out to the finish line. It was really cool to do this. The rest of the race was through a lot of neighborhoods in Green Bay. On the full course you do run by a river for several miles.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; I have walked a few but haven't ran in one. I honestly hadn't planned on running this one, I had planned on walking it with Anna, but once we crossed the start mat she took off. She pulled ahead about half a mile in but was within eyesight. Then she decided to stop at the bathroom and I kept on going figuring she would catch up. I walked at that point so I could put my headphones in. I walked one other time up a huge hill. I wanted to make it all the way up but after going over half way and turning a corner and seeing more hill, I decided to walk the rest of the way up. I finished in 42:37 which I am really happy with. In my long runs I had not done under a 15 min pace.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

Before the race

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

Anika also enjoyed the zoo

Lacey has been running quite a bit lately. She has done several long runs with either me or Jeremy. The most she has done so far at one time is 15 miles. She almost always goes with him on his 5-6 mile week day runs. She definitely needs the exercise or else she is running wild. The picture below is of her new favorite place in our yard. She loves to go to the top and watch what goes on in and outside our yard.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

This weekend Jeremy and I are gong to Wisconsin for the Green Bay Full (him) and Half (me). I also get to see one of my best friends that moved up there a couple years ago! However, I quickly realized when I was running up the first hill, that that was NOT going to work. My new strategy became walk up the hills and run down them. I did this for most of them. There were some that were so steep it took a little while after them to recover.

The sun was actually shining and the course was beautiful going by many of the horse farms in the area. Around mile 10, the half marathons had joined back up with the 7 milers and I kept looking for some of my friends. I saw James, John, and Eric first. I knew Jeremy would be coming soon. About mile 12 he caught up to me. We had talked about him finishing with me if he caught me but when he got to me he said he was doing good and wanted to know if he could go on. Of course being the good wife that I am I said "Yeah, go on" and off he went. After he finished he came back for me and ran the last half a mile in with me. My friend Emily had also done the 7 mile race and she did fantastic! She beat her goal time by 5 minutes. I was super impressed, especially considering those hills!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

Me and Emily

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

Jeremy and me

After the half and 7 miler was over, they had a kids race that was .9 of a mile. Jeremy volunteered to run with Anika. She was so excited about running in a race and winning her medal.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

Ready to run!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

Showing off our medals

2013/04/run-bluegrass-7-miler.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Crystal)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007459881154237853.post-1396614323737000640Tue, 26 Mar 2013 14:39:00 +00002013-03-26T10:39:14.953-04:00Orlando and a run of firstsA couple days after the indoor triathlon my hip started hurting. I tried to run a couple times, but would have to stop and ended up having to finish the distance walking. My 4 mile run became a 4 mile walk. I went to the chiropractor and he got me all fixed up.

Two weekends ago Jeremy and I went to Magic Kingdom and to Universal's Islands of Adventure to visit Harry Potter World. Harry Potter World was great! And Butter Beer (which is non-alcoholic I will add) was amazing! I had three! We are already planning to go back!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="240" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

I didnt run while we were down there. I was supposed to do 5 miles that weekend, but we seriously walked all day long for three days - one at Universal, one shopping, and one at Magic Kingdom. So I thought that made up for it.

This past weekend, my plan had me doing 6 miles since I have a 7 mile race this upcoming Saturday. If you have ever read my blog or know me, you will know I HATE running in the rain. I can count the times I've run in the rain during the past 3 years on one hand. Saturday was going to be nice but we already had things planned. Sunday called for a 70% chance of rain. And of course we woke up to a downpour. I looked at the map and it looked like it might be past us around 11am, so Jeremy and I decided to wait it out for a couple hours.

11 o'clock came and it was still raining. But I had told myself I was going to do this and with Lacey. She has to be exercised or she is wound up all day and night long. We started out and for the first mile I thought this had to be my worst idea ever and was planning on running a couple miles then I could go back to my house and do the rest on the treadmill. After 2 miles though, the rain let up and it was just windy and cold. I decided to continue on and even decided that as long as it wasn't raining I was going to do 7 miles, instead of the 6 that was on schedule.

Keep in mind since I broke my ankle I have not run more than 4 miles and as stated above that 4 miles ended up being a walk bc of my hip. I ran/walked 7 miles and felt good! I wasn't concerned with my time. On this run I realized I actually like running when I'm not worried about getting a certain time and I really like running with Lacey. She keeps my attention so I don't think about how much I don't like running in the rain or how slow I've become.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="240" />

Lacey, finally worn out after a run.

2013/03/orlando-and-run-of-firsts.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Crystal)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7007459881154237853.post-9150127819091273595Tue, 05 Mar 2013 16:03:00 +00002013-03-05T11:03:06.815-05:00Catching Up and Indoor Triathlon RecapSorry I have been away so long from the blogging world. I have been running and have finished week 6 of my couch to 10K program. I got a little behind in February with a lazy week, followed by hurting my already bad ankle. But it is better now, nothing broken, just bruised.

Jeremy and I have been running with Lacey as much as we can. She isn't quite ready to run in town yet, so we have to go to the park with her. Jeremy has taken her on a couple 5 mile runs and she has done really well and is tired afterwards. We have figured that for now 5 is her magic number of what it takes to get her to wear out.

Sunday Emily and I took part in an indoor triathlon, the same one we did last year. Unfortunately this year I did not prepare at all like I should have. I had not swam or biked since early last summer before I broke my ankle and as previously stated February wasn't a great run month for me. The swim was ok. I was the next to fastest person there. trbidi="on"> দেশে একসময় সবেধন নীলমণি ছিল সাহেব বিবির বাক্স বিটিভি।

<img alt="" class="bb-image" height="300" src="; href=" নয়েজ

2012/02/blog-post.htmlnoreply@blogger.com Some of you may have seen my journey through Jen’s Delilah ToM on my Instagram page (@live.breathe.create). I was determined to get this finished and quilted and into the NSW quilt show, along with my second entry which was a wedding ring quilt I designed for my eldest daughter. This was only 5 years late, but as I am led to believe as wedding (ring) quilts go that’s pretty standard and probably ahead of the game!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="400" src="; width="400" />

I was really pleased with both but it meant that usual intense completion of hand quilting and binding (and the joys of a sleeve). Using Quilters Dream Select cotton batting meant I could do that given the distance between quilting stitches that it allows for.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="; width="320" />

Same went for the wedding ring, I just wanted to echo the pattern and so I used the Quilter’s Dream wool batting which had the added advantage that the great loft meant that the ¼” quilting around the arcs meant they popped out.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="883" height="400" src="; width="275" />

Life also happens (this is the bit Jen is not responsible for) and just occasionally you need to take a break. It works until you put it on the spots then it seems to get lost. Also, don’t look too closely but the central join is a bit shabby. I started to play with it but the wovens are not too forgiving when it comes to overworking them (I was warned) so I left it as it was pulling the fabric, especially the petals as the self-pattern weave is not as dense in places. Once I have finished the circles and cut out my semicircles for the border I might remake this one, but I want to see all of them together before I make that decision.

One cheat was the centre circle, on this and the spikes and petal block above. I tried hand piecing such a tight circle, but the final result was a weird distorted ‘hexacircle’ rather than a nice neat circle. For both I actually appliqued on my circle. Using Karen Kay Buckley’s perfect circle templates, I did the gather and press thing and then pinned and appliqued. The larger set had the perfect size (phew) for both. I have used these a lot, the investment has paid off.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="961" data-original-width="961" height="400" src="; width="400" />

So that’s a wrap on this set, I will try and not be so tardy next time.

Just read that, and ‘tardy’ seems a bit Jane Austen like.
