Theatre finally makes an uproarious return to The Platform in the hilarious hijinks of Oscar Wilde’s classic comedy of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest.
‘Frenemies’ Jack and Algernon cause utter chaos in the pursuit of romance under the withering gaze of the infamously imposing Lady Bracknell in this production, on for one night, and one night only, on Saturday 19th July.
The Importance of Being Earnest will be presented by Lancaster’s Three Left Feet, a theatre and events company who have recently been named as associate artists of the Dukes Theatre.
Three Left Feet have previously made their mark locally with outdoor productions of Twelfth Night, The Wind in the Willows and Treasure Island in Lancaster’s Williamson Park, as well as working in new and unusual spaces such as a production of A Christmas Carol in a bookshop, A Fisherman’s Tale beneath Luke Jerram’s Gaia exhibit, and last year’s The Magic Toyshop at Lancaster Castle.
Filled with Wilde’s signature humour, extravagant characters, and biting commentary, this production of The Importance of Being Earnest will leave you laughing out loud whether you’re a bonafide fan of Wilde or totally new to his timeless comedy. This production is a delightful reminder that in both love and life, the most important thing is… being earnest.
There will be two performances of The Importance of Being Earnest, a matinee at 2pm and and evening showing at 7pm. The show runs for approximately 3 hours including an interval. Tickets are available online through the Platform’s event listings: or via their box office: 01524 582803 and are priced at £22.
There will also be another chance to catch the production this year on Sunday 7th September at Greystoke Castle in Penrith:
For more information visit www.threeleftfeet.co.uk and @threeleftfeetuk on instagram.
Three Left Feet are a community interest company based in Lancaster. They produce theatre and events in the North West, created by, featuring and championing people living and working in the region. Making opportunities for emerging artists and creatives underpins everything they do.

The Evaluation Report for Baylight 25 has revealed that not only did 19,286 visitors to the festival in February have a whale of a time, they also delivered a whale of economic value to the Morecambe economy. The independent Evaluation Report from Red Research has revealed that daily visitor numbers were 22% higher than in 2024 and the total economic impact of the 2025 event was almost £1.3 million. Red Research’s work included findings from 308 interviews on site with visitors to Baylight.Although the Baylight 2025 event was for just 2 days the event achieved higher economic benefits than in previous years: visitors came in larger parties, stayed longer and more of them spent money on food, drink and gifts. More came from further away and there were many more overnight tourists. The Returnon Investment was calculated by Red Research to be double what it was in 2024 at £6.70 for every pound invested.Baylight 25 involved local and national artists and the local community. It comprised 17 installations across the promenade area and a much more elaborate Parade than in previous years, involving the closure of Marine Road Central. Headed by a Giant Whale, the Parade’s participants of local groups included three bands, dance groups and children holding creative displays and models they had created in artist-run workshops with their parents or teachers. A new event this year included a collection of Morecambe vintage films screened at the Reel Cinema.
The Report authors Red Research stated, “The third Baylight event in Morecambe provided a significant draw and motivation for people to visit the town and generated income at a crucial time of the year for local businesses.” The prospects for future Baylight events are strong with 96% of visitors interviewed face-to-face said they would like to come to another similar event in Morecambe in the future.Councillor Martin Bottoms, Lancaster City Council’s member with responsibility for Morecambe Regeneration and Local Economy, said: “Baylight 25 has shown just how powerful creativity and community can be in transforming ourtown. With record-breaking visitor numbers and a remarkable economic boost of nearly £1.3 million, it’s clear that events like this shine a spotlight on Morecambe and bring real returns for local people, local businesses, and our town’s future.“The city council was glad to have been able to support Baylight 25, and I would like to thank everyone who made this possible—from the artists to the volunteers, and especially the families and visitors who brought such energy and joy to the seafront.”David Waddington, Chair, Morecambe BID said:“Morecambe BID was delighted to support Baylight once again – and we were also delighted to sponsor the ‘Giant Whale’ this year, which led the parade on Saturday night. The event continues to grow year on year, and the economic benefit to our levy payers this year was the best it’s been. The spend on food, drink, gifts and entertainment were all up on 2024, with 75% of people surveyed confirming they had come to Morecambe because of Baylight. Saturday, particularly, was incredibly busy, and made for a fantastic atmosphere at night, but also contributed to more visitors during the day this year, prior to the evening’s parade. It’s a fantastic event for Morecambe and is a great kickstart to our season.”
Councillor Clerk Kent, Chairman, Morecambe Town Council said:“We’re incredibly proud that Morecambe Town Council could be a headline sponsor for Baylight this year. It’s been absolutely brilliant to see families, friends, and visitors of all ages out enjoying the lights and experiencing the town in such a magical way. There’s something really special about seeing littleones wide-eyed with wonder, and families making those simple, joyful memories together. Events like this really bring people together – they shine a light (quite literally) on everything that makes Morecambe special. The boost to local tourism has been fantastic too, with so many people discovering (or rediscovering!) just how much our town has to offer. The Town Council is supporting this event for the coming years, and we’re already looking forward to next year.”Morecambe Sparkle CIC is grateful to all its funders, especially early supporters Morecambe Town Council, now the headline sponsor, and Morecambe BID, and to Lancashire County and Lancaster City Councils, who stepped in to help in December 2024. Last and very much not the least are individual local sponsoring businesses and all the local people who contributed to the Baylight 25 Crowdfunder.

AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS ACROSS MORECAMBE, Saturday 6th to Sunday 7th July, 2024
The Arts Weekend in Morecambe will happen at venues across the town. The main venue is the Winter Gardens (209 Marine Rd W, Morecambe LA4 4BU) for the 4th MORECAMBE BAY ART FAIR where a weekend map will be available.
Featuring at the King’s Arms (248-250 Marine Rd E, Morecambe LA4 4BJ) is the first MORECAMBE PEOPLE’S BIENNIAL – sharing the equivalent of a single artist’s funding between 100 creative people in Morecambe. The Morecambe People’s Biennial is looking to help local creative people – involving different groups, making a ground-up arts initiative that provides a model for activity in a post-work society.
The People’s Biennial Director, Anthony Padgett has received funding (as part of Morecambe Artists’ Colony) from Morecambe Town Council to give £2,995 directly to local creative people: whether artists, writers, singers, dancers, film-makers or musicians. He is also receiving just over £1300 from the Lancashire Culture and Sport Fund and donations. After deducting costs of room hire and banners, it means that direct payments of cash of £40 each can be made to 100 artists/creatives. Creatives will need to be 18+ and to show proof of their ID and current residency (e.g. passport and addressed letter) in the area (north of the Lune, West of the A6, South of the Bay and East of the Irish Sea). And, if they want to show their work then they would be very welcome to bring something along, or perform something.
Artists/Creatives will need to register upstairs at the Kings Arms on Saturday 6th July from 6pm and will be given a voucher on a first 20 come first 20 served in the 5 categories of visual artist, dancer, musician, writer and film-maker/performer. Different groups will be checked by: visual artists (Robert Lever of Salon Morecambe), writers (Anne Holloway of The Big White Shed), dancers (Chelsey Needham of Your Innersense) and film and theatre makers (Matt Panesh or representative of West End Players). Money will be given to those with a voucher and will require the signing of a receipt. Unused monies will need to be returned to the Council.
Supported by Morecambe Town Council, Lancashire County Council, Morecambe Artists’ Colony, the Salon Morecambe and the West End Playhouse.
A copy of the director’s essay is available here:

LANDING: What connects you with nature?
Lancaster Arts wants to explore this question with you. Please join us as we celebrate the relationships between us and the natural world that surrounds us.
LANDING will be based at the Battery by the promenade in Morecambe’s West End on Friday the 28th to the 30th of June. We would love to have you join us and learn your answer to this question.
LANDING is a co-commission with We Live Here and a collaboration with artists, Henna Asikainen and Breakwater Collective. All of us are looking at different ways of connecting communities with the natural world around us. Together with Tim Harrison, Director of We Live Here, we are looking to build deeper connections between communities and the natural environments around us and working with local, national and international artists.
Henna’s project is called NEST and she will be exploring ideas of belonging through the creation of a human nest in Heysham on June 1st and then again, at LANDING on June 28th and 29th. Find out more about how you can help her build this NEST here.
Breakwater Collective is a collaboration between artists Taey Iohe and Youngsook Choi. They are creating Cockles of my Heart, a guided immersive sound walk on the sands of Morecambe Bay to consider the beautiful but fragile landscapes of the bay that are entangled with colonial histories and human tragedy.
Over two and a half days, LANDING will have lots of free creative activity to enjoy and we will be posting details over the coming weeks. Two further commissions addressing similar themes are taking place as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival this spring and LANDING will go to the Freedom Festival in Hull in September.
If you are interested in taking part or finding out more about LANDING, please get in touch with us by emailing alice@lancasterarts.org.

A FIERCE, FUNNY, BLOODY TAKE ON SOME OF THE OLDEST STORIES KNOWN TO WOMAN
Beautiful Evil Things was named Number 4 in The Guardian’s ‘Best Theatre of 2022
.
A fierce, funny look at the alternative stories of the villainised women in Greek mythology comes to the Dukes, Lancaster on the 11th & 12th June.
“This tour de force of physical theatre is unmissable” ★★★★ The Stage (on Odyssey)
Told through the eyes of Medusa as she watches the battle of Troy, Ad Infinitum takes a look at the alternative stories of the most notorious women in Greek mythology in a new show co-created and performed by long-term collaborator Deborah Pugh.
A bodiless head on the goddess Athena’s shield, the snake-haired Medusa watches over the battle, focusing on queens and prophets whose stories have been cast in the worst possible light. Casting Medusa as an archivist setting the record straight, history is retold with full nuance and colour as seen through a female gaze, and through the most powerful gaze in mythology. Told with the same high-energy physical storytelling as Ad Infinitum’s award-winning one-man Odyssey, their one-woman race through mythology is a fierce, funny take on female stories throughout history that have been forgotten, distorted or erased.
What if there was another take on the Trojan War you’d never heard? Enter Medusa: she was there. Monstrous gorgon? Snakes for hair? A turn-to-stone glare? Perhaps. But she was there – as a bodiless head strapped to the shield of a goddess. In forgotten and alternative stories about them, Iphigenia wasn’t the first child of Clytemnestra to be murdered by Agamemnon, Cassandra’s abilities were learned rather than god-given, Amazonian Queen Penthesilea wasn’t killed by Achilles, and Medusa was a protector of the ancient world. Beautiful Evil Things asks why the versions of the stories we know about these women are the most damning ones.
Co-creator and performer Deborah Pugh said, “Reseeing the stories of the Trojan War afresh through Medusa’s eyes has been a brilliant opportunity to review these well-worn classics and interrogate their familiar translations and tellings. How would a monstrous social outcast, murdered by a hero see things differently? Which characters would she connect to? How would she feel about gods and heroes having fallen foul of both of them? What would be her telling of these tales? And would they still feel so very… masculine? Some stories had to be unearthed, others reframed but this fabulously fearsome female gaze has been the perfect lens through which to view the tales of some truly phenomenal ancient wonder women, each as flawed, fearless and front footed as their male counterparts. Each stood strong and centre, driving their own story.”
