We’ll see. There has been much talk this college basketball season about coaching behavior on the sidelines. I did read in an article however that coach’s technical fouls are actually down over a year ago. But maybe coach’s antics are up causing the added attention. Both coaches and referees are at fault for this matter, but it’s largely the coaches’ problem. I understand isolated events, but when a coach has repeated bad sideline behavior, it’s a problem. One solution is to have the athletic director sit the coach down and have a little talk on the behavior problem. Another solution is placing restrictions on coaches’ access to the referees. Does the coach really require moving up and down the sidelines like a rooster ‘working’ the officials for calls? That answer: is no. Does the coach really need to yell instructions to players from the coaching box? No. He could sit on the bench and holler. Now for the referees and what they can do. Referees need to quit socializing with players and coaches before the game. I understand they want a good working relationship with the participants, but they are there to do a job not win friends. College basketball is a great game. But this problem detracts from it. 2014/03/coach-basketball-coaches-and-referees.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-7416797820689293890Fri, 10 May 2013 21:33:00 +00002013-05-10T14:33:05.861-07:001990 National ChampionshipBill McCartneyCollege Football Hall of FameColoradoGodLes MilesLSUNebraskaPromise KeepersBill McCartney: Great Coach, Great ManI was thrilled this week to learn that former Colorado football coach Bill McCartney has been election to the College Football Honor of Fame

Coach Mac and I have been long time friends.

McCartney has the most wins of any coach in Colorado football history. He led the Buffaloes to the 1990 National Championship.

He created excitement in the old Big 8 Conference. Nebraska was the kingpin in those days and McCartney’s teams often rose above the kingpin.

Two things described McCartney the coach: recruiting and motivation. He consistently recruited black athletes to come to the Boulder school and it resulted in a pile of victories. He was a master motivator. The guy could get players to buy into the team concept. And he preached accountability.

Coach Mac left the sidelines 20 years ago. Like most successful coaches, he developed a head coaching tree. LSU’s Les Miles is the most noticeable of that group.

But McCartney was more than a successful coach. He helped found the Christian men’s movement Promise Keepers. If you ever heard the guy speak at an event, McCartney reminded one of a fiery preacher who had a real message.

Coach Mac was and is a man of conviction. And a man of God. Those two attributes are rare these days.

2013/05/bill-mccartney-great-coach-great-man.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-6700674129919295233Sat, 13 Apr 2013 18:40:00 +00002013-04-13T11:41:03.760-07:00All About College Sportsblog commentsBobby Petrinocollege basketballcollege footballDave Dilesspring cleaningUnited StatesVanderbilt Basketball CourtVanderbilt UniversityAll About College Sports: Spring CleaningIn this part of the world there is an annual ritual this time of year: spring cleaning. But in parts of the United States, it doesn’t even feel like spring. Cold, rain and snow are making the weather news.

But it’s time to perform a spring cleaning of my blog “All About College Sports.” College football and college basketball produce the most interest of any college sports and those playing seasons are over. Consequently, I will limit my blog posts considerably in the next few months. From time-to-time, I will see write blogs on the “hot news” items, but it’s time for a break.

I have been doing this blog since 2008. It’s been an opportunity to produce fresh content for my readers based on the wonderful world of college sports. I consider myself a college sports junkie. It’s fun following the sports and the personalities. Sometimes I take winning and losing a little too seriously but that’s part of being a fan, I guess.

Early in the basketball season, I questioned whether I wanted to continue this blog. There are tons of sports voices out there seeking to be read. Mine frankly is pretty small. But, I guess that’s okay.

I would enjoy hearing from my readers as I wrestle with my decision. What do you enjoy about my blog? What don’t you enjoy? What kinds of things should I write about? It would be great if you flood my blog with comments. I will read all of the comments.

Numbers are sometimes interesting. According to the numbers, the best read blog has been in a landside “Bobby Petrino’s family. That was an extremely sad story. Interestingly, No. 2 is “Vanderbilt’s Basketball Court.” The set-up is unique and so cool with the benches behind the baskets. Another surprise is No. 5 with “Dave Diles-College Football Scoreboard.” Like me, you folks must have keen memories of Diles reading those scores each Saturday.

If you haven’t had an opportunity to read those blogs, I invite you to take a peak.

Thank you for your faithful readership. Again, I would enjoy hearing from you in the comments.

Best, Paul

2013/04/all-about-college-sportsspring-cleaning.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-4361916702983003596Tue, 09 Apr 2013 16:20:00 +00002013-04-09T09:20:14.669-07:00college basketballLouisvilleMarch MadnessMichiganNBA DraftNCAA basketball tournamentNCAA Basketball: It's Over
The college basketball men’s season is officially over and I don’t know if I’m happy or sad.

Louisville took the title last night (Monday) defeating Michigan in an entertaining game. Michigan became the 67th and final team to become disappointed in the NCAA tournament.

College basketball is a long season. Someone said once that college basketball coaches have a sense of humor (as opposed to the football coaches) because of the season length. Without humor, the coaches probably wouldn’t survive.

But frankly, the season isn’t really over just the games. Basketball is a 12-month sport now with the 24-hour news cycle fueling it. One of the next phases are more players declaring for the NBA Draft. And already one guy’s Top 25 for next season came out today. Please…

I have seen enough basketball. It’s time to rest my eyes and enjoy another season. That would be baseball.

2013/04/ncaa-basketball-its-over.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-5967624799825332230Fri, 05 Apr 2013 20:04:00 +00002013-04-05T13:04:36.439-07:00Baylor Universitycollege basketballCory JeffersonIowa HawkeyesMadison Square GardenNBANITNCAA Basketball: This Guy was Major Iowa PainOutside of Iowa and Baylor fans, limited interest was generated by the NIT Final. Only about 5,000 people were in attendance at Madison Square Garden and who know how few watched the game on ESPN.

But going into last night’s (Thursday) game, this figured to be an interesting game. These two squads had only met once before.

I thought Iowa would win the game. The Hawks were on a roll and seemed too powerful for the Bears. Baylor had an up-and-down year and I didn’t know what team Baylor would display in the contest.

But wow, it was blowout city for Baylor.

Hawkeye players will have bad memories of one particular Baylor player—Cory Jefferson. In no disrespect to the Thanksgiving meal, Jefferson carved Iowa up. The guy was impressive. He scored 23 points on too many dunks. He rebounded, he played defense.

Jefferson, a junior, had a great year. He played sparely in his previous two years and even took a redshirt year in his sophomore year. Jefferson played behind three future NBA players, so it wasn’t like the guy had major minute opportunities. He could have transferred but he stayed and collected the fruits this year.

Baylor fans hope he returns for his senior season. His pro stock definitely went up during Baylor’s postseason. Iowa players would agree with that.

2013/04/ncaa-basketball-this-guy-was-major-iowa.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-6124682131909792619Thu, 04 Apr 2013 15:13:00 +00002013-04-04T08:13:24.518-07:00college basketballFlorida InternationalLouisvilleMinnesota GophersNCAA college basketballRich PitinoRick PitinoTubby SmithNCAA Basketball: Strange Coaching HireSometimes I just shake my head at my neighbors in Minnesota.

After the University of Minnesota fired basketball coach Tubby Smith, the Gophers needed to make an impressive hire. But apparently nobody wanted the job. I do know the rumor that one of the student managers even turned down the job isn’t true.

The Gophers welcome Rich Pitino to the job. Yes, Pitino is the son of the famous Louisville coach Rick Pitino. Yes, the guy has good blood lines but can he mold a so-so Big Ten contender into something better.

Kid Pitino had one successful season at Florida International. He will be doing on the job training in one of the toughest basketball leagues in America. Remember, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State isn’t Florida International.

Minnesota took forever to make their selection. As the process played out, you knew others were making their selection not to take the Gopher job.

If you are Kid Pitino there is little risk. If you are Minnesota, there is great risk.

The Gophers haven’t exactly been making waves in the money sports of football and basketball lately. This hire may continue the tread.

2013/04/ncaa-basketball-strange-coaching-hire.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-87157782906412399Tue, 02 Apr 2013 16:18:00 +00002013-04-02T09:18:04.533-07:00college basketballFinal FourGregg MarshallLouisvilleMichiganNCAA basketball tournamentShockersSyracuse OrangemenWichita StateNCAA Basketball Tournament: Thank-You Wichita State
It’s great that Wichita State earned a trip to the Final Four. The Shockers appearance will draw one tall fellow to the television set.

We need new blood in the championship round and as a ninth-seed the Shockers provide it. As their nickname represents, they have shocked many people in still standing in the tournament.

Many people picked their semi-final opponent Louisville to win the championship. But the Shockers shouldn’t be frightened as they have already taken out the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in their regions. Louisville should win, but should wins are only decided on paper. Wichita State needs to “play angry” as its coach Gregg Marshall says and it will be in the game.

Syracuse and Michigan play in the other game. Yawn. These teams like Louisville have been in this spot consistently and it doesn’t draw much interest for the tall fellow.

Hopefully, the Shockers can shock again and appear in the Monday night championship game. He had some solid success at New Mexico, but will the former Indiana star be able to “step it up” and find success in Los Angeles

People in my state (Iowa) are always interested in Alford. He coached the Iowa Hawkeyes for a number of years. The honeymoon started well when Iowa landed him off a Sweet 16 performance at then Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). He won a Big Ten Tournament Championship at Iowa but also loss an NCAA tournament game to No. 14 seeded Northwestern State. When New Mexico offered Alford its coaching job, many Iowa fans were happy to see Alford leave.

UCLA is counting on Alford to continue his success from New Mexico. Alford has proven he can win consistently on the mid-major level, but the power conference job success is still up for debate.

It seems a good risk for UCLA. However, Alford knows the guy he is replacing brought UCLA to two Final Fours. The learning curve won’t be long. And then there is always the John Wooden factor. The most successful NCAA Division I coach in history raised the bar extremely high at UCLA.

2013/03/steve-alford-and-ucla.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-4024193487143662068Fri, 29 Mar 2013 20:30:00 +00002013-03-29T13:30:36.263-07:00college basketballFred HoibergIowa State CyclonesMinnesota GophersNBANCAA basketball tournamentThe MayorIowa State's Fred Hoiberg Has More CapitalIt’s a fun time of the college basketball year with the NCAA tournament and the coaching rumors and destination.

One guy who isn’t going anyway is Iowa State’s men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg. “The Mayor” agreed to a contact extension Thursday night that with give him 10 years and $20 million. Not bad loot for the former Iowa State ball boy.

I didn’t think Hoiberg would leave Iowa State at this time but there were plenty of rumors out there. There was talk about the NBA and lately the opening at Minnesota. Hoiberg allegedly met with the Gophers about their opening. What took place and the level of Hoiberg’s interest is anybody’s guess.

Successful coaches are a hot commodity. Some go shopping and then find a sweeter deal at their present place of employment. This happens frequently. I’m not saying Hoiberg did this but he was the beneficiary of the media speculation. Hoiberg received a nice raise.

I believe him when he says he loves Iowa State. And the Iowa State administration decided it would tell the basketball world that they love Fred Hoiberg.

This marriage is going well in Ames, Iowa.

2013/03/iowa-states-fred-hoiberg-has-more.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-2258900168771383955Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:44:00 +00002013-03-27T07:44:40.830-07:00Andy EnfieldCinderellacollege basketballFloridaFlorida Gulf CoastNCAA basketball tournamentNCAA men's basketball tournamentSweet 16NCAA Basketball Tournament: Florida Gulf Coast

We all enjoy Cinderella in the NCAA basketball tournament. This year we have the ultimate Cinderella in Florida Gulf Coast.

A No. 15 seed has never advanced to the Sweet 16 in the history of the NCAA tournament until Florida Gulf Coast crashed the party.

This team didn’t follow the NCAA script. Usually underdogs surprise the favorite in their opening game. The underdog received national praise and talk and then goes quietly in the next round.

But will this feel-good story end Friday when the Gulf boys play big-bad Florida? You would like to see them continue the magic but with the strength of their opponent and natural pressure (as the stakes get higher) the odds are not in their favor.

The beauty is that the game will be decided between a couple of baskets and not in discussion groups.

Win or loss, Florida Gulf Coast Coach Andy Enfield will become a hot commodity. What big time program will want this guy and will he go? You would think the answer to the second question is “Yes.”

2013/03/ncaa-basketball-tournament-florida-gulf.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Paul Delger)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5367724293310249373.post-2104308538363557339Mon, 25 Mar 2013 15:50:00 +00002013-03-25T08:50:30.281-07:00Aaron CraftIowa State CyclonesMarch MadnessNCAA basketball tournamentOhio StateSweet 16NCAA Basketball Tournament: March is CruelIowa State found out Sunday, March can become a cruel time.

The Cyclones were one play away from forcing overtime against Ohio State. They were maybe 1-2 plays from snatching the victory. Buckeye point guard Aaron Craft took care of all those possibilities when he drilled a three-pointer with less than one second remaining.

The Cyclones were done. Finished. Over. It was time to turn to the “What ifs.”

Iowa State entered the game as a real underdog to No. 2 seeded Ohio State. Cyclone fans knew their team had an excellent change however for an upset. Mid-way through the second half, it looked like Ohio State was going to deliver the knockout punch. The Buckeyes held a double digit lead, but then Iowa State marched back to set up a thrilling, but painful finish for Cyclo

In each section I placed zipper pocket and baseball card holders to hold all the coupons in.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" n4="true" src="; width="200" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" n4="true" src="; width="150" /><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" n4="true" src="; width="200" />

I like the zipper bags the best because it is easier to place the coupons inside. The draw back is that you can not see your coupons at a glance. So I have both in each section of my binder.

How to Make a Zip Pocket Holder for Binder

I cut down a gallon zip lock bag from the bottom end so that it will fit in the binder, next I cut a sheet of card stock so that it will slide into the zip lock bag leaving a little hanging out the end that you cut. Once that is done I use clear packing tape and tape the cut end closed. After the bag has been reinforced with the packing tape I punch holes in the zip bag with a three hole punch.

Using the coupons at the Grocery Story or other Stores

When I make out our shopping list for each store, I put the coupons I’ll be using in each store envelope. I then write my list for that store on the outside of each envelop and place a circled C next to the items that has a coupon. This way I make sure that I am getting the right item while at the store and it also insure that I will use all of them at check out.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" n4="true" src="; width="200" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" n4="true" src="; width="240" />

Here is another cute coupon organizer from Glowgirl.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="47" n4="true" src="; width="320" />

<a href=" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Glowgirl

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="230" n4="true" src="; width="320" />

<a href=" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Coupon Organizer

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="45" n4="true" src="; width="320" />

2011/01/coupons-keeping-it-all-together.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Tami)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6376939742179550425.post-2798079823348762726Fri, 14 Jan 2011 02:49:00 +00002011-01-13T19:01:23.494-08:00Beauty TipsPamper Your Feet
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" n4="true" src="; />

Our feet should not be left out of our beauty regiment. Finding himself flung into his very own fairy tale, she sends him off to meet his Prince Charming. But was the gown really necessary?

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="207" />

Excerpt:

Cinder glanced around. Paper lanterns floated in the trees, lined the walks, and graced the gazebo near the reflecting pool, giving the grounds a mystical air. Their warm glow caught the dancing jets of the fountain splashing merrily to his right. The musical, crystalline tones carried on the night wind’s breath. He was reminded of the enchanted gardens in the fairy tales his father had read to him when he was a child. What would happen to him if he dared walk there?

Henri led him toward the gazebo. Soon he would find out.

The cool breeze caressed his uncovered neck. Cinder shivered at the ethereal touch. Henri turned to him, the question clear in his eyes, but he didn’t know how to answer. Instead he breathed in the tangible scent of rich earth and flowing water, hoping to calm his bounding heart.

Henri lightly stroked his arm. Cinder’s breath caught at the silky brush of the other man’s fingers. He drew another shaky breath. Henri may have meant to soothe him; instead his touch set Cinder’s wayward body aflame.

They left the last of the courtiers behind as they entered the dim interior of the fanciful pavilion. Vines climbed its intricately carved posts, perfuming the air within. The music and voices of the aristocrats faded away. Only a single intrepid nightingale could be heard over the cheerful burbling of the fountain. Hidden from the rest of the court, an unworldly sense of peace filled him. Was his very own fairy tale about to come true?

Bespelled and bemused, he could feel the magic in every beat of his heart, in every trembling breath he drew.

Once inside the bower, Henri reached to cup Cinder's cheek. Unused to being touched, he nearly flinched away but managed to still, heart pounding, before giving himself away. The older man's thumb slid across his cheekbone and came to rest lightly on his mouth. Why did he want to lean into that caress?

The other man's warm, slightly musky scent filled his nostrils, drowning his senses.

Henri's other hand wrapped around his waist and drew him close. He leaned closer while tipping Cinder's face upwards. Cinder's breath left him in a rush, stirring the noble’s hair. Henri was all that he could see, his mouth slowly, carefully descending toward Cinder’s. If he allowed this, the other man might discover his deception. He couldn’t risk that, so why then did he ache to feel Henri’s kiss? Their lips brushed, light as thistle down.

Surprisingly, Henri's mouth was soft and warm upon his own. After a moment, it pressed more firmly against his. Something fluttered in his chest, trying to get out.

Cinder didn't think to pull away until he felt Henri's tongue seeking entrance. The hand on his face slipped to his nape and held firm. He froze in shock, not even daring to breathe, as flames rushed through his body. The very beat of his heart betrayed him.

The questing tongue stroked his lips and pushed between them. It slid over his teeth, seeking to enter. When he protested, Henri swept in and began a lazy, sensuous exploration that left him breathless.

Soon he found himself returning the caress. Henri responded to his fledgling attempts by pulling him closer and moaning into his mouth. He had never experienced anything so sensual and erotic. He fed his own needy pleas to the other man one at a time.

Finally they separated slightly, Cinder panting heavily, trying to catch his breath. Was Henri as affected by their kiss as he was? A quick glance confirmed Cinder was not alone in his arousal. Flushed and gasping, Henri gazed at him with eyes full of wonder and something unnamed smoldering in their depths.
Email This
BlogThis!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

2013/04/from-ashes.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (All Male Romance)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2017109677315953763.post-8529576459330028393Thu, 14 Feb 2013 12:40:00 +00002013-02-14T04:47:38.576-08:00Happy Valentine's DayHi everyone!
Jaxx Steele here again to wish you all a Happy Valentine’s Day. I for one like Valentine’s Day. I have heard many reasons on how the holiday came to be. Some say the day is a conspiracy made by the candy company to suck money out of people. Other think its conception came about to honor a gruesome massacre that happened somewhere. How creepy is that?? I’m hoping that’s way too morbid to be actual fact. That you would buy gifts for your loved ones to remember a day where so many were killed? *shivers*

I don’t care where the idea came from, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that some extremely busy guy was slacking on putting in the time needed to keep his lover happy invented it. Being the genius that he was, he came up with one special day that he could put on his calendar and have his secretary remind him to go big with the gifts. LOL

I have written 3 Valentine Day inspired stories: A Year-long Valentine (inside Reflections of Love anthology available at Dreamspinners Press), Vegas Valentine (available at Muse it Hot) and Claiming Cupid.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

Reflections of Love is an anthology that Dreamspinners Press put together. My story within is about a club owner who falls in love with a singer. He spends a year wooing him anonymously before he reveals himself.

Claiming Cupid is a story is about that forbidden love. You know the ones that are on the off limits list. The best friend, best friend’s sister, your play cousin, brother in all but blood, yeah, all of those people. They’re too close to being family, right? I wrote this book to show that sometimes what you want the most is right in your face, but if you don’t ask, you don’t get. You know, that whole trees for the forest thing. Here is a peek inside Claiming Cupid.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

Blurb:
Daniel was sick and tired of Max’s ‘boyfriends’ dogging him. He thought Max deserved better and wanted him to be his man so he could treat him better, but he was afraid to jeopardize their friendship by making any unwanted moves on. When Max broke up with his latest lover the day before Valentine’s Day, Daniel could take it no more. He put a plan of action in place to claim and protect the heart of his old friend.

Vegas Valentine is the sequel to Hosting for the Holidays. This story really came about by accident. I had thought Hector and Chad’s story was done at New Years, but the promise Hector made to Chad wouldn’t shut Chad up in my head. I have always loved pirates and cowboys. They are usually tough men hardened by their choices they’ve made in life. Cowboy law is simple and just. “Don’t fuck with mine and I won’t fuck with yours and if you do, I’m gonna kill you.” Simple and to the point. I love that. There are no misunderstandings when a man comes to you like that. A pirate’s code however is a little different. If they want your shit they’re going to take unless you’re man enough to stop them. I like that too, though. LOL

It was time that I showed my love to these leather wearing and sea hardened men. My book Part of the Posse gives a behind the scenes look at cowboy life, the way I picture it, of course. I watched some really good cowboy movies to come up with terrain and mannerisms for my main character, Les Browning. A few of my favorite movies are Wyatt Earp, Unforgiven, Posse and Tombstone.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

I really like Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven. It is all the way at the bottom of the “Coming Soon” page because the release date for My Roommate’s a Jock? Well, Crap! is December 31, 2012!! So… can you say NEW YEAR’S EVE PRESENT? So freakin’ exciting! So, of course, I texted several friends right away! (Am I using too many exclamation points?) !!!!!!

Along with my PRE-ORDER link, I got a “package” of promo stuff. Like a banner of the book – gonna put that on Facebook I guess – and some picture that can be used on book marks and postcards. I DID send out postcards to book stores for WLINE. Hmm, maybe I’ll do that again. Can’t hurt.

With the idea of “pre-order” in mind… R.B. was the first to tell me she pre-ordered it! How exciting is that? Dude! I’m like flyin’!! Sales for When Love is Not Enough were good enough for me, but not so competitive and lucrative for the publisher. (And we all know publishers like to make money, else why do they publish ANYTHING?) So, I’m really looking forward to this one! I need my publisher to be excited about me as an author. I want them to say, “Cool, Wade’s sent another novel over to read. Yay! Better get on it, might be the next bestseller!” … As apposed to the alternative – “Oh, Wade’s sent us another ‘loser’ novel to try and sell. Gee, do we read it now, or wait until we have nothing better to do?” I know I’ve said before that I don’t write for the money; I’m writing what means something to ME!! (And this one totally does!) BUT, if the stuff I write is so lame &/or unpopular that publishers can’t sell it, than it is harder on me.

The road to self-publishing is rougher than I imagined. And WAAAAAY longer! My editor is making look smarter (because we all know I can’t use punstuation correctly) but the editing is taking so loooong!!! AND I have to re-write chapter 16 so I’m bummed about that! *For those who don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, I’m trying to self-publish the sequel to When Love Is Not Enough. It’s titled The Cost of Loving and the cover and book blurb are on my website!*

And why do I have to self-publish a sequel? Because WLINE was not a very popular book? It’s depressing. it’s extremely sad, it’s about gay suicide, it’s got POV shifts, and the novel is one huge rollercoaster ride of emotions that will rip a reader’s heart out! People don’t seem to appreciate that! ??? Why?

To be far, I have some really awesome “fans” and followers that read it and some would even read it again! On Goodreads, I officially have 105 fans! I think that’s awesome!! I also have 60 followers on Twitter. (I also have loads of “friends” on facebook but for the most part, I don’t talk to many. The core group of the Facebook friends are connected to me on Goodreads and Twitter and some e-mail.) I am very appreciative of my fans and followers! Sometimes I don’t really know where to go. I think that if all I do is promote and push people, I’ll lose my time to write the next one. And I’ll be just like every other writer promo’ing the crap out of people and pages. (Or do I already do that on here??) hmm. Anyway. I’m looking into guest-blogging. That sounds good. But I will also rely on my fans. Please spread the word! My Roommate’s a Jock? Well, Crap! comes out on December 31st!!!! The “Pre-order” button is on the Dreamspinner Press page, and I signed the first 20 paperbacks! I’d love nothing more than to ROCK THEIR WORLD because of my loyal fan base. The college had just acquired three more single-family homes on the edge of campus grounds and opened them for occupancy. First come, first serve. There was a minimal upcharge over regular dorm fees, but the perks were worth it. Guidelines for tenancy were minimal as long as the house was maintained properly—which basically meant that if you trashed it, you got kicked out—but otherwise, those who lived there governed themselves. No RA! (Resident Assistant for those not aware of dorm-speak.)

Awesomenicity!

The house I was “lucky” enough to make it into had six bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a dining room, and three baths. Four of the other guys assigned to the same residence were sports fanatics and one was a math major. I loathe jocks! Not that you can lump all sports guys together and assume they know everything about sports, but my point is, I had nothing in common with those guys. Jon was the math major.

We made it through one semester of parties and hooting at the television during football season before a suite in a neighboring house opened up. The layout was also different from most campus housing. Instead of one floor of bedrooms and then living space on the bottom floor, this unit had three floors of two bedrooms and living space combined. I wasn’t sure about the efficiency of that design; perhaps it was three rental apartments at one time before the campus purchased it. I didn’t know.

Whatever the explanation, Jon and I had it made! I wanted to avoid that. I thought if I advertised in places that promised interesting prospects—i.e., the physics building and the library—then I would hopefully avoid the types of people I dreaded living with: jocks! Ahem. *clears throat*

The plan was going okay, I guess. I had a few guys call me up, but I was looking for someone who reminded me of Jon—someone smart and funny, and who didn’t care if I watched History Channel on Friday night. Two guys inquired. My guest on this episode of The Decision-Making Studio is Bruna De Palo, author of The Brain Instruction Manual for Leaders: What Nobody Told You About Working with Humans. Bruna's book is about neuroscience and leadership, but our conversation ranges much more widely into how the brain shapes judgement, behaviour and decision-making. We talk about why the idea of "taking emotion out of a decision" makes very little sense; how our brains use past experience, habits and mental shortcuts to predict what happens next; and how those same processes can also create biases and constrain the options we see. We explore the brain as a predictive system — one that is constantly trying to anticipate what will happen and allocate our limited energy accordingly. That leads us into Bruna's idea of the "box": the accumulated experiences and assumptions our brains draw upon to make sense of what is happening around us. We also explore why uncertainty is so demanding for the brain and what that means when we ask people to navigate significant change. And we look at what psychological safety actually means when people need to speak up, disagree and challenge decisions. If our brains are continually scanning their environment for threat, creating the conditions in which people genuinely feel able to contribute becomes far more than a nice cultural aspiration. There is some good news too. Neuroplasticity means that deeply ingrained patterns of thought and behaviour are not necessarily permanent. We discuss habits, learning and how new neural pathways develop — and what this might tell us about actually changing behaviour rather than simply knowing what we ought to do. Along the way we get into emotion as data, resistance to change, prediction, bias, stress and flow — including a wonderful example involving Diego Maradona. At its heart, this is a conversation about something I keep coming back to on this podcast: if we want to make better decisions, it helps to understand the human biology, neuroscience and psychology behind them. And what if more of those failures are avoidable than we think? There is an enormous mythology around start-ups. Perhaps the biggest is the often-repeated claim that 90% of them fail — as if failure is simply the natural, almost inevitable price of trying to build something new. My guest on this episode of The Decision-Making Studio Podcast is Dr Bernard Bulkin OBE. Bernie spent more than two decades in venture capital, investing in Silicon Valley and London. He's been an angel investor, a founder and a company leader, and has served on boards ranging from start-ups to large public companies. He's also an Emeritus Professorial Fellow at the University of Cambridge and has served as a Vice President of the Energy Institute. And, as his biography rather refreshingly points out, he has also founded, led and invested in companies that have failed. His book is Why Start-Ups Fail: Avoiding the Traps on the Path to Commercial Success. And I think it's a rather counter-cultural business book. Bernie's argument is not that start-ups don't fail. Of course they do. It's that many of the reasons they fail are understandable, and, crucially, avoidable. If you're a founder, or thinking about starting a business, Bernie offers something approaching a masterclass here in why start-ups fail and what can be done differently. But this isn't really a business podcast. The Decision-Making Studio is about decisions and uncertainty. And what interested me in Bernie's work is what happens when you look beneath the start-up context. We talk about engineers and the particular ways they can think about businesses. We talk about money, and why most start-ups need more than they think they do. We get into behavioural science, myths and assumptions, and self-awareness: understanding yourself, your own limitations, and the role that plays in the decisions you make. So yes, this is something of a masterclass in start-ups. But it's also a conversation about something much broader: why failure is not always inevitable, how our own thinking can help create it, and whether, by understanding the traps we repeatedly fall into, we might make better decisions. In start-ups, certainly. But well beyond them too. In this episode (00:03:00) Why do start-ups fail? Bad Blood — Penguin Random House More from Bernie Professor Bernie Bulkin — Murray Edwards College, Cambridge Why do start-ups fail? Not just any phrases, but aphorisms – those short sentences with the power to stop us in our tracks, cause us to rethink how we see things, and even make better decisions. I'm joined by James Geary, author of the newly re-released book, The World in a Phrase: A Brief History of the Aphorism. James is a lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School. James is also a self-confessed 'aphorism addict', and he studied the history of what he calls the world's oldest written art form. As you will hear, aphorisms transcend culture and historical periods. And James's work and this conversation refer to the likes of Lao Tzu, the ancient Greeks, through to Mark Twain, and modern figures like Wynton Marsalis and Brian Eno. From a decision-making lens, aphorisms have potency as heuristics. When we think about modern challenges, James explains that they can help us so very much, particularly as AI is taking over the written word and threatening to reduce our cognitive load to zero. Much needs to change. Most conversations focus on what should change and how. This episode asks a different, and more refreshing, question: 👉 What can we do every day to help make change happen? To explore this, I am joined by Adam Kahane, a leading organiser, designer and facilitator of processes that bring business, government and civil society together to address seemingly intractable problems. Adam was formerly Head of Social, Political, Economic and Technological Scenarios at Shell, and later co-founded the social enterprise Reos Partners. His latest book, Everyday Habits for Transforming Systems: The Catalytic Power of Radical Engagement, offers a practical guide to creating meaningful change. In this conversation, we discuss what these habits are, how to practise them, and why they matter. Taylor Swift may recognised as a pop star, but as you'll hear, her decision-making is pure punk rock. My guest today is Kevin Evers, who wrote as a senior editor at The Harvard Business Review and the author of There's Nothing Like This - The Strategic Genius of Taylor Swift. Kevin breaks down exactly why Taylor has been able to scale her success, why she's been able to reinvent herself time and again, and how she's been able to both manage disruption and be a driving force herself. We'll hear all about that, as well as Taylor's authenticity, her relationship with her fans, and the way in which she makes decisions. And of course, this is very topical. I am honour to welcome Michael Posner to the show. Michael is the director of the Centre for Business and Human Rights at New York University's Stern School of Business. He is a human rights lawyer, and he was Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour under the Obama administration. He is the author of a new book, Conscience Incorporated: Pursue Profits While Protecting Human Rights, which, given the state of things in the world and the United States, is pretty timely and important. Michael covers a ton of ground here, from the primacy of shareholder capitalism, how to make decisions in a world comprised of competing expectations and trade-offs, the tensions associated with decisions around human rights and environmental concerns, when CEOs should speak up, and his thoughts on the Trump administration and what's happening with regard to the United States' role in the world and to democracy and human rights.
