Recognize that, Cat.” It’s like a lightbulb went on and I never forgot to acknowledge my kids very real feelings and never (ahem… most often) did not try to put a band aid on them by dumbing them down. Of course, we do that unconsciously most of the time, but isn’t it freeing, even as adults, when someone gives us empathy for our “silly feelings”? ]]>

Dan says: First skin the brow of the skull (remove the skin and hair of forehead just above eyes) and behind the antlers at the back of the head to create a path for your hacksaw. Then, using a slanted angle start at the brow and cut with a sharp hacksaw just above the eye sockets towards the back of the skull. Start the other side of the V-cut from behind the antlers, attempting to meet cuts significantly below the base of the antlers (where the antlers attach to the skull itself is some of the hardest bone on the plantet – your V cut should take you into the brain cavity). If the cuts don’t meet up precisely you should be able to wrench the antlers away from the skull when saw cuts are nearly complete. ]]> By: Rachel #comment-330539 Tue, 19 Apr 2016 00:13:19 +0000 This is just what I needed to read right now. So much general anxiety about my two little ones, and it’s so nice to be reminded what I could actually be thinking about if I cleared away that worry. Also, any Dan tips for removing antlers from a deer skull? We had a deer die in our yard while on vacation and didn’t discover it for awhile (I’m sure our neighbors were delighted)…the skull’s a little smashed up but we thought we could keep the antlers and aren’t sure of the best way to get them off… ]]> By: Sparks #comment-330189 Sat, 16 Apr 2016 19:30:04 +0000 “(Also possible that I need a new glasses prescription. Your mom said: free up the worrying mind so you can focus on creative, effective strategies to meet their current needs. You are both such wise women. I wish I had had a notion of these thoughts while I was at home with my girls. With Sarah, both are still true. She counts on us to help her negotiate through her life. We all grow as we age, so your comments are valuable for all of us, husbands too. My Gary is retiring soon… his creative life will change from work to home. We’ll try to catch up with you when we are there visiting this summer (or whenever now), just so we don’t conflict with track and field and poly hockey (Sarah’s Special Olympics) and Gary’s golf season. I love your conversation with Col. It doesn’t change much as you get older. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. ]]> By: meagan #comment-330050 Fri, 15 Apr 2016 15:17:26 +0000 As always, spot on. I’m relieved to know that I’m not the only one whose kids are actively pursuing things beyond the cultivation of a single passion. I catch myself often fretting, and need to remind myself that they’re 11 and 9. And they’re really interesting people. And they’ll be just fine. Comments on: letting the mental guard dog of sibling disputes off its chain Fri, 21 Dec 2018 14:56:23 +0000 hourly 1 By: Emmanuelle Rivière #comment-484966 Mon, 13 Aug 2018 14:41:24 +0000 Oh, Rachel. This whole text is pure grace. True, beautiful, golden words. And beautiful Col and Rose. <3 ]]> By: Erica #comment-484841 Thu, 09 Aug 2018 13:11:29 +0000 Great insights! I’m going to work on rewiring in my own mind on this topic. It’s hard for me when I perceive one is manipulating the other and I want to step in and fix it. My favorite line I read several times and wrote down for myself:. “believing in what follows the “should” is the short path to suffering.” That needs to be my mantra. ]]> By: Susan S #comment-484597 Sat, 04 Aug 2018 03:19:10 +0000 My siblings and I fight like cats and dogs, always have, but let one of us actually be threatened, and the other two will be the ones to stand between the vulnerable one and the flames. We can throw stones at each other, but nobody else can. I think that’s common in sibling relationships. We did start to get along much better the older we got and we each had more freedom. When we didn’t live together anymore, we could choose to spend time together and then go back to our respective territories. It was really hard to have our own space and identities without that distance, which made us aggressive, I think. After that independence came to our lives, my brother and I took a couple of two-week-long road trips together, and now that he’s passed, the memories of the road trips are what I keep and cherish, not the squabbles. As always, Rachel, you and your family are absolutely beautiful. ]]> By: Rachel Turiel #comment-484581 Fri, 03 Aug 2018 13:18:57 +0000 In reply to Anonymous. “Wherever you are is the entry point” -Kabir ]]> By: Anonymous #comment-484580 Fri, 03 Aug 2018 13:14:34 +0000 This is so beautiful. Sitting down to read your writing is a little gift I give myself. I love your perspective, it’s where I want to be some day. I’ll get there in time. I am in the beginnings of these unravelings, I see you might be in the middle. ]]> By: Drew Thayer #comment-484500 Wed, 01 Aug 2018 16:00:15 +0000 So true! The way siblings weave their delicate web of relating, resentment, and trust is unique and likely un-readable from the outside. I love the anecdote of $3 ‘finders fee’. Reminds me of how my mom told me recently she was very disappointed years ago when she discovered I’d charged my younger brother $10 (all the money he had, at age 6-ish?) for a radio I found in a dumpster. Rather than jump in as police right there she let it play out, and we both ended up listening to it a lot in his room, singing to the oldies station. Funny how things work out. ]]> By: Kyce Bello #comment-484476 Tue, 31 Jul 2018 23:36:57 +0000 Bless you, Rachel Turiel. ]]> By: Anonymous #comment-484467 Tue, 31 Jul 2018 22:25:40 +0000 “Also, because I’ve let my mental guard dog of sibling disputes off its chain, I’m less likely to micro-analyze Col and Rose’s interactions, looking for who left fingerprints of guilt on the surface of their last conflict.” This seems like a crux move. Seeing people more clearly as they are. As Mother Theresa said, (paraphrasing) “When we’re judging people then we’re less available to love them.” ]]> By: Angela @ Tread Lightly Retire Early #comment-484458 Tue, 31 Jul 2018 18:39:35 +0000 No sibling for our guy, but I love the way you’ve written this to step back. This feels relatable to me even with one kid, and how he goes out into the world with his friends and “cousin.” ]]>
