Which is, to a degree, the point here. My time, and priorities, have changed over the years. And this lead me to the decision that my available time and priorities in 2023 aren’t compatible with being a Debian or Ubuntu developer, and realistically, haven’t been for years. As of earlier this month, I quit as a Debian Developer and Ubuntu MOTU. I think a lot of my blogging energy got absorbed by social media over the last decade, but with the collapse of Twitter and Reddit due to mismanagement, I’m trying to allocate more time for blog-based things instead. I may write up some of the things I’ve achieved at work (.NET 8 is now snapped for release Soon). I might even blog about work-adjacent controversial topics, like my changed feelings about the entire concept of distribution packages. But there’s time for that later. Maybe. I’ll keep tagging vaguely FOSS related topics with the Debian and Ubuntu tags, which cause them to be aggregated in the Planet Debian/Ubuntu feeds (RSS, remember that from the before times?!) until an admin on those sites gets annoyed at the off-topic posting of an emeritus dev and deletes them. But that’s where we are. Rather than ignore my distro obligations, I’ve admitted that I just don’t have the energy any more. Let someone less perpetually exhausted than me take over. And if they don’t, maybe that’s OK too. /linux/1323/feed 1 1323 My name is Jo and this is home now /detritus/1289 /detritus/1289#respond Tue, 29 Oct 2019 09:41:48 +0000 /?p=1289 After just over three years, my family and I are now Lawful Permanent Residents (Green Card holders) of the United States of America. It’s been a long journey. Acknowledgements Before anything else, I want to credit those who made it possible to reach this point. My then-manager Duncan Mak, his manager Miguel de Icaza. Amy and Alex from work for bailing us out of a pickle. Microsoft’s immigration office/HR. Gigi, the “destination services consultant” from DwellWorks. The immigration attorneys at Fragomen LLP. Lynn Community Health Center. And my family, for their unwavering support. The kick-off It all began in July 2016. With support from my management chain, I went through the process of applying for an L-1 intracompany transferee visa – a 3-5 year dual-intent visa, essentially a time-limited secondment from Microsoft UK to Microsoft Corp. After a lot of paperwork and an in-person interview at the US consulate in London, we were finally granted the visa (and L-2 dependent visas for the family) in April 2017. We arranged the actual move in July 2017, giving us a short window to wind up our affairs in the UK as much as possible, and run out most of my eldest child’s school year. We sold the house, sold the car, gave to family all the electronics which wouldn’t work in the US (even with a transformer), and stashed a few more goodies in my parents’ attic. Microsoft arranged for movers to come and pack up our lives; they arranged a car for us for the final week; and a hotel for the final week too (we rejected the initial golf-spa-resort they offered and opted for a budget hotel chain in our home town, to keep sending our eldest to school with minimal disruption). And on the final day we set off at the crack of dawn to Heathrow Airport, to fly to Boston, Massachusetts, and try for a new life in the USA. Finding our footing I cannot complain about the provisions made by Microsoft – although not without snags. The 3.5 hours we spent in Logan airport waiting at immigration due to some computer problem on the day did not help us relax. Neither did the cat arriving at our company-arranged temporary condo before we did (with no food, or litter, or anything). Nor did the fact that the satnav provided with the company-arranged hire car not work – and that when I tried using my phone to navigate, it shot under the passenger seat the first time I had to brake, leading to a fraught commute from Logan to Third St, Cambridge. Nevertheless, the liquor store under our condo building, and my co-workers Amy and Alex dropping off an emergency run of cat essentials, helped calm things down. We managed a good first night’s exhausted sleep, and started the following day with pancakes and syrup at a place called The Friendly Toast. With the support of Gigi, a consultant hired to help us with early-relocation basics like social security and bank accounts, we eventually made our way to our own rental in Melrose (a small suburb north of Boston, a shortish walk from the MBTA Orange Line); with our own car (once the money from selling our house in the UK finally arrived); with my eldest enrolled in a local school. Aiming for normality. The process Fairly soon after settling in to office life, the emails from Microsoft Immigration started, for the process to apply for permanent residency. We were acutely aware of the time ticking on the three year visas – and we already burned 3 months of time prior to the move. Work permits; permission to leave and re-enter; Department of Labor certification. Papers, forms, papers, forms. Swearing that none of us have ever recruited child soldiers, or engaged in sex trafficking. Tick tock. Months at a time without hearing anything from USCIS. Tick tock. Work permits for all, but big delays listed on the monthly USCIS visa bulletin. Tick tock. We got to August 2019, and I started to really worry about the next deadline – our eldest’s passport expiring, along with the initial visas a couple of weeks later. Tick tock. Then my wife had a smart idea for plan B, something better than the burned out Mad Max dystopia waiting for us back in the UK: Microsoft just opened a big .NET development office in Prague, so maybe I could make a business justification for relocation to the Czech Republic? I start teaching myself Czech. Duolingo screenshot, Czech language, “can you see my goose” Tick tock. Then, a month later, out of the blue, a notice from USCIS: our Adjustment of Status interviews (in theory the final piece before being granted green cards) were scheduled, for less than a month later. Suddenly we went from too much time, to too little. Ti-… October The problem with the one month of notice is we had one crucial missing piece of paperwork – for each of us, an I-693 medical exam issued by a USCIS-certified civil surgeon. I started calling around, and got a response from an immigration clinic in Lynn, with a date in mid October. They also gave us a rough indication of medical exams and extra vaccinations required for the I-693 which we were told to source via our normal doctors (where they would be billable to insurance, if not free entirely). Any costs in the immigration clinic can’t go via insurance or an HSA, because they’re officially immigration paperwork, not medical paperwork. Total cost ends up being over a grand. More calling around. We got scheduled for various shots and tests, and went to our medical appointment with everything sorted. Except… Turns out the TB tests the kids had were no longer recognised by USCIS. And all four of us had vaccination record gaps. So not only unexpected jabs after we promised them it was all over – unexpected bloodletting too. And a follow-up appointment for results and final paperwork, only 2 days prior to the AOS interview. By this point, I’m something of a wreck. The whole middle of October has been a barrage of non-stop, short-term, absolutely critical appointments. Any missing paperwork, any errors, and we can kiss our new lives in the US goodbye. Wednesday, I can’t eat, I can’t sleep, and various other physiological issues. The AOS interview is the next day. I’m as prepared as I can be, but still more terrified than I ever have been. Any missing paperwork, any errors, and we can kiss our new lives in the US goodbye. I was never this worried about going through a comparable process when applying for the visa, because the worst case there was the status quo. Here the worst case is having to restart our green card process, with too little time to reapply before the visas expire. Having wasted two years of my family’s comfort with nothing to show for it. The year it took my son to settle again at school. All of it riding on one meeting. Thursday Our AOS interviews are perfectly timed to coincide with lunch, so we load the kids up on snacks, and head to the USCIS office in Lawrence. After parking up, we head inside, and wait. We have all the paperwork we could reasonably be expected to have – birth certificates, passports, even wedding photos to prove that our marriage is legit. To keep the kids entertained in the absence of electronics (due to a no camera rule which bars tablets and phones) we have paper and crayons. I suggest “America” as a drawing prompt for my eldest, and he produces a statue of liberty and some flags, which I guess covers the topic for a 7 year old. Finally we’re called in to see an Immigration Support Officer, the end-boss of American bureaucracy and… It’s fine. It’s fine! She just goes through our green card forms and confirms every answer; takes our medical forms and photos; checks the passports; asks us about our (Caribbean) wedding and takes a look at our photos; and gracefully accepts the eldest’s drawing for her wall. We’re in and out of her office in under an hour. She tells us that unless she finds an issue in our background checks, we should be fine – expect an approval notice within 3 weeks, or call up if there’s still nothing in 6. Her tone is congratulatory, but with nothing tangible, and still the “unless” lingering, it’s hard to feel much of anything. We head home, numb more than anything. Aftermath After two fraught weeks, we’re both not entirely sure how to process things. I had expected a stress headache then normality, but instead it was more… Gradual. During the following days, little things like the colours of the leaves leave me tearing up – and as my wife and I talk, we realise the extent to which the stress has been getting to us. And, more to the point, the extent to which being adrift without having somewhere we can confidently call home has caused us to close ourselves off. The first day back in the office after the interview, a co-worker pulls me aside and asks if I’m okay – and I realise how much the answer has been “no”. Friday is the first day where I can even begin to figure that out. The weekend continues with emotions all over the place, but a feeling of cautious optimism alongside. I-485 Adjustment of Status approval notifications On Monday, 4 calendar days after the AOS interview, we receive our notifications, confirming that we can stay. I’m still not sure I’m processing it right. We can start making real, long term plans now. Buying a house, the works. I had it easy, and don’t deserve any sympathy I’m a white guy, who had thousands of dollars’ worth of support from a global megacorp and their army of lawyers. The immigration process was fraught enough for me that I couldn’t sleep or eat – and I went through the process in one of the easiest routes available. Youtube video from HBO show Last Week Tonight, covering legal migration into the USA I am acutely aware of how much more terrifying and exhausting the process might be, for anyone without my resources and support. Never, for a second, think that migration to the US – legal or otherwise – is easy. The subheading where I answer the inevitable question from the peanut gallery My eldest started school in the UK in September 2015. Previously he’d been at nursery, and we’d picked him up around 6-6:30pm every work day. Once he started at school, instead he needed picking up before 3pm. But my entire team at Xamarin was on Boston time, and did not have the world’s earliest risers – meaning I couldn’t have any meaningful conversations with co-workers until I had a child underfoot and the TV blaring. It made remote working suck, when it had been fine just a few months earlier. Don’t underestimate the impact of time zones on remote workers with families. I had begun to consider, at this point, my future at Microsoft, purely for logistical reasons. And then, in June 2016, the UK suffered from a collective case of brain worms, and voted for self immolation. I relocated my family to the US, because I could make a business case for my employer to fund it. It was the fastest, cheapest way to move my family away from the uncertainty of life in the UK after the brain-worm-addled plan to deport 13% of NHS workers. To cut off 40% of the national food supply. To make basic medications like Metformin and Estradiol rarities, rationed by pharmacists. I relocated my family to the US, because despite all the country’s problems, despite the last three years of bureaucracy, it still gave them a better chance at a safe, stable life than staying in the UK. And even if time proves me wrong about Brexit, at least now we can make our new lives, permanently, regardless. /detritus/1289/feed 0 1289 Too many cores /linux/1281 /linux/1281#respond Wed, 13 Mar 2019 14:48:52 +0000 /?p=1281 Arming yourself ARM is important for us. It’s important for IOT scenarios, and it provides a reasonable proxy for phone platforms when it comes to developing runtime features. We have big beefy ARM systems on-site at Microsoft labs, for building and testing Mono – previously 16 Softiron Overdrive 3000 systems with 8-core AMD Opteron A1170 CPUs, and our newest system in provisional production, 4 Huawei Taishan XR320 blades with 2×32-core HiSilicon Hi1616 CPUs. The HiSilicon chips are, in our testing, a fair bit faster per-core than the AMD chips – a good 25-50%. Which begged the question “why are our Raspbian builds so much slower?” Blowing a raspberry Raspbian is the de-facto main OS for Raspberry Pi. It’s basically Debian hard-float ARM, rebuilt with compiler flags better suited to ARM11 76JZF-S (more precisely, the ARMv6 architecture, whereas Debian targets ARMv7). The Raspberry Pi is hugely popular, and it is important for us to be able to offer packages optimized for use on Raspberry Pi. But the Pi hardware is also slow and horrible to use for continuous integration (especially the SD-card storage, which can be burned through very quickly, causing maintenance headaches), so we do our Raspbian builds on our big beefy ARM64 rack-mount servers, in chroots. You can easily do this yourself – just grab the raspbian-archive-keyring package from the Raspbian archive, and pass the Raspbian mirror to debootstrap/pbuilder/cowbuilder instead of the Debian mirror. These builds have always been much slower than all our Debian/Ubuntu ARM builds (v5 soft float, v7 hard float, aarch64), but on the new Huawei machines, the difference became much more stark – the same commit, on the same server, took 1h17 to build .debs for Ubuntu 16.04 armhf, and 9h24 for Raspbian 9. On the old Softiron hardware, Raspbian builds would rarely exceed 6h (which is still outrageously slow, but less so). Why would the new servers be worse, but only for Raspbian? Something to do with handwavey optimizations in Raspbian? No, actually. When is a superset not a superset Common wisdom says ARM architecture versions add new instructions, but can still run code for older versions. This is, broadly, true. However, there are a few cases where deprecated instructions become missing instructions, and continuity demands those instructions be caught by the kernel, and emulated. Specifically, three things are missing in ARMv8 hardware – SWP (swap data between registers and memory), SETEND (set the endianness bit in the CPSR), and CP15 memory barriers (a feature of a long-gone control co-processor). You can turn these features on via abi.cp15_barrier, abi.setend, and abi.swp sysctl flags, whereupon the kernel fakes those instructions as required (rather than throwing SIGILL). CP15 memory barrier emulation is slow. My friend Vince Sanders, who helped with some of this analysis, suggested a cost of order 1000 cycles per emulated call. How many was I looking at? According to dmesg, about a million per second. But it’s worse than that – CP15 memory barriers affect the whole system. Vince’s proposal was that the HiSilicon chips were performing so much worse than the AMD ones, because I had 64 cores not 8 – and that I could improve performance by running a VM, with only one core in it (so CP15 calls inside that environment would only affect the entire VM, not the rest of the computer). Escape from the Pie Folk I already had libvirtd running on all my ARM machines, from a previous fit of “hey one day this might be useful” – and as it happened, it was. I had to grab a qemu-efi-aarch64 package, containing a firmware, but otherwise I was easily able to connect to the system via virt-manager on my desktop, and get to work setting up a VM. virt-manager has vastly improved its support for non-x86 since I last used it (once upon a time it just wouldn’t boot systems without a graphics card), but I was easily able to boot an Ubuntu 18.04 arm64 install CD and interact with it over serial just as easily as via emulated GPU. Because I’m an idiot, I then wasted my time making a Raspbian stock image bootable in this environment (Debian kernel, grub-efi-arm64, battling file-size constraints with the tiny /boot, etc) – stuff I would not repeat. Since in the end I just wanted to be as near to our “real” environment as possible, meaning using pbuilder, this simply wasn’t a needed step. The VM’s host OS didn’t need to be Raspbian. Point is, though, I got my 1-core VM going, and fed a Mono source package to it. Time taken? 3h40 – whereas the same commit on the 64-core host took over 9 hours. The “use a single core” hypothesis more than proven. Next steps The gains here are obvious enough that I need to look at deploying the solution non-experimentally as soon as possible. The best approach to doing so is the bit I haven’t worked out yet. Raspbian workloads are probably at the pivot point between “I should find some amazing way to automate this” and “automation is a waste of time, it’s quicker to set it up by hand” Many thanks to the #debian-uk community for their curiosity and suggestions with this experiment! /linux/1281/feed 0 1281 Bootstrapping RHEL 8 support on mono-project.com /linux/1275 /linux/1275#comments Fri, 08 Mar 2019 16:15:12 +0000 /?p=1275 Preamble On mono-project.com, we ship packages for Debian 8, Debian 9, Raspbian 8, Raspbian 9, Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04, RHEL/CentOS 6, and RHEL/CentOS 7. Because this is Linux packaging we’re talking about, making one or two repositories to serve every need just isn’t feasible – incompatible versions of libgif, libjpeg, libtiff, OpenSSL, GNUTLS, etc, mean we really do need to build once per target distribution. For the most part, this level of “LTS-only” coverage has served us reasonably well – the Ubuntu 18.04 packages work in 18.10, the RHEL 7 packages work in Fedora 28, and so on. However, when Fedora 29 shipped, users found themselves running into installation problems. I was not at all keen on adding non-LTS Fedora 29 to our build matrix, due to the time and effort required to bootstrap a new distribution into our package release system. And, as if in answer to my pain, the beta release of Red Hat Enterprise 8 landed. Cramming a square RPM into a round Ubuntu Our packaging infrastructure relies upon a homogenous pool of Ubuntu 16.04 machines (x64 on Azure, ARM64 and PPC64el on-site at Microsoft), using pbuilder to target Debian-like distributions (building i386 on the x64 VMs, and various ARM flavours on the ARM64 servers); and mock to target RPM-like distributions. So in theory, all I needed to do was drop a new RHEL 8 beta mock config file into place, and get on with building packages. Just one problem – between RHEL 7 (based on Fedora 19) and RHEL 8 (based on Fedora 28), the Red Hat folks had changed package manager, dropping Yum in favour of DNF. And mock works by using the host distribution’s package manager to perform operations inside the build root – i.e. yum.deb from Ubuntu. It’s not possible to install RHEL 8 beta with Yum. It just doesn’t work. It’s also not possible to update mock to $latest and use a bootstrap chroot, because reasons. The only options: either set up Fedora VMs to do our RHEL 8 builds (since they have DNF), or package DNF for Ubuntu 16.04. For my sins, I opted for the latter. It turns out DNF has a lot of dependencies, only some of which are backportable from post-16.04 Ubuntu. The dependency tree looked something like: Update mock and put it in a PPA Backport RPM 4.14+ and put it in a PPA Backport python3-distro and put it in a PPA Package dnf and put it in a PPA Package libdnf and put it in a PPA Backport util-linux 2.29+ and put it in a PPA Update libsolv and put it in a PPA Package librepo and put it in a PPA Backport python3-xattr and put it in a PPA Backport gpgme1.0 and put it in a PPA Backport libgpg-error and put it in a PPA Package modulemd and put it in a PPA Backport gobject-introspection 1.54+ and put it in a PPA Backport meson 0.47.0+ and put it in a PPA Backport googletest and put it in a PPA Package libcomps and put it in a PPA Package dnf-plugins-core and put it in a PPA Hit all the above with sticks until it actually works Communicate to community stakeholders about all this, in case they want it This ended up in two PPAs – the end-user usable one here, and the “you need these to build the other PPA, but probably don’t want them overwriting your system packages” one here. Once I convinced everything to build, it didn’t actually work – a problem I eventually tracked down and proposed a fix for here. All told it took a bit less than two weeks to do all the above. The end result is, on our Ubuntu 16.04 infrastructure, we now install a version of mock capable of bootstrapping DNF-requiring RPM distributions, like RHEL 8. RHEL isn’t CentOS We make various assumptions about package availability, which are true for CentOS, but not RHEL (8). The (lack of) availability of the EPEL repository for RHEL 8 was a major hurdle – in the end I just grabbed the relevant packages from EPEL 7, shoved them in a web server, and got away with it. The second is structural – for a bunch of the libraries we build against, the packages are available in the public RHEL 8 repo, but the corresponding -devel packages are in a (paid, subscription required) repository called “CodeReady Linux Builder” – and using this repo isn’t mock-friendly. In the end, I just grabbed the three packages I needed via curl, and transferred them to the same place as the EPEL 7 packages I grabbed. Finally, I was able to begin the bootstrapping process. RHEL isn’t Fedora After re-bootstrapping all the packages from the CentOS 7 repo into our “””CentOS 8″”” repo (we make lots of naming assumptions in our control flow, so the world would break if we didn’t call it CentOS), I tried installing on Fedora 29, and… Nope. Dependency errors. Turns out there are important differences between the two distributions. The main one is that any package with a Python dependency is incompatible, as the two handle Python paths very differently. Thankfully, the diff here was pretty small. The final, final end result: we now do every RPM build on CentOS 6, CentOS 7, and RHEL 8. And the RHEL 8 repo works on Fedora 29 MonoDevelop 7.7 on Fedora 29. The only errata: MonoDevelop’s version control addin is built without support for ssh+git:// repositories, because RHEL 8 does not offer a libssh2-devel. Other than that, hooray! /linux/1275/feed 1 1275 EOL notification – Debian 7, Ubuntu 12.04 /linux/1252 /linux/1252#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2018 18:31:56 +0000 /?p=1252 Mono packages will no longer be built for these ancient distribution releases, starting from when we add Ubuntu 18.04 to the build matrix (likely early to mid April 2018). This, as it turned out, was untenable – just building on an old distribution was insufficient to offer “works on everything” packages, due to dependent library APIs not being necessarily forward-compatible. For example, openSUSE users could not install MonoDevelop, because the versions of libgcrypt, libssl, and libcurl on their systems were simply incompatible with those on CentOS 7. MonoDevelop packages were essentially abandoned as unmaintainable. Then, nearly 2 years ago, a reprieve – a trend towards development of cross-distribution packaging systems made it viable to offer MonoDevelop in a form which did not care about openSUSE or CentOS or Ubuntu or Debian having incompatible libraries. A release was made using Flatpak (born xdg-app). And whilst this solved a host of distribution problems, it introduced new usability problems. Flatpak means sandboxing, and without explicit support for sandbox escape at the appropriate moment, users would be faced with a different experience than the one they expected (e.g. not being able to P/Invoke libraries in /usr/lib, as the sandbox’s /usr/lib is different). In 2 years of on-off development (mostly off – I have a lot of responsibilities and this was low priority), I wasn’t able to add enough sandbox awareness to the core of MonoDevelop to make the experience inside the sandbox feel as natural as the experience outside it. The only community contribution to make the process easier was this pull request against DBus#, which helped me make a series of improvements, but not at a sufficient rate to make a “fully Sandbox-capable” version any time soon. In the interim between giving up on MonoDevelop packages and now, I built infrastructure within our CI system for building and publishing packages targeting multiple distributions (not the multi-distribution packages of yesteryear). And so to today, when recent MonoDevelop .debs and .rpms are or will imminently be available in our Preview repositories. Yes it’s fully installed in /usr, no sandboxing. You can run it as root if that’s your deal. Where’s the ARM builds? Where’s the ARM64 builds? Why aren’t you offering builds for $DISTRIBUTION? It’s already an inordinate amount of work to support the 10(!) distributions I already do. Especially when, due to an SSL state engine bug in all versions of Mono prior to 5.12, nuget restore in the MonoDevelop project fails about 40% of the time. With 12 (currently) builds running concurrently, the likelihood of a successful publication of a known-good release is about 0.2%. I’m on build attempt 34 since my last packaging fix, at time of writing. Can this go into my distribution now? Oh God no. make dist should generate tarballs which at least work now, but they’re very much not distribution-quality. See here. What about Xamarin Studio/Visual Studio for Mac for Linux? Probably dead, for now. Not that it ever existed, of course. *cough*. But if it did exist, a major point of concern for making something capital-S-Supportable (VS Enterprise is about six thousand dollars) is being able to offer a trustworthy, integration-tested product. There are hundreds of lines of patches applied to “the stack” in Mac releases of Visual Studio for Mac, Xamarin.Whatever, and Mono. Hundreds to Gtk+2 alone. How can we charge people money for a product which might glitch randomly because the version of Gtk+2 in the user’s distribution behaves weirdly in some circumstances? If we can’t control the stack, we can’t integration test, and if we can’t integration test, we can’t make a capital-P Product. The frustrating part of it all is that the usability issues of MonoDevelop in a sandbox don’t apply to the project types used by Xamarin Studio/VSfM developers. Android development end-to-end works fine. Better than Mac/Windows in some cases, in fact (e.g. virtualization on AMD processors). But because making Gtk#2 apps sucks in MonoDevelop, users aren’t interested. And without community buy-in on MonoDevelop, there’s just no scope for making MonoDevelop-plus-proprietary-bits. Why does the web stuff not work? WebkitGtk dropped support for Gtk+2 years ago. It worked in Flatpak MonoDevelop because we built an old WebkitGtk, for use by widgets. Aren’t distributions talking about getting rid of Gtk+2? Yes /linux/1240/feed 5 1240 Packaging is hard. Packager-friendly is harder. /linux/1229 /linux/1229#comments Wed, 14 Feb 2018 11:21:06 +0000 /?p=1229 Releasing software is no small feat, especially in 2018. You could just upload your source code somewhere (a Git, Subversion, CVS, etc, repo – or tarballs on Sourceforge, or whatever), but it matters what that source looks like and how easy it is to consume. What does the required build environment look like? Are there any dependencies on other software, and if so, which versions? What if the versions don’t match exactly? Most languages feature solutions to the build environment dependency – Ruby has Gems, Perl has CPAN, Java has Maven. You distribute a manifest with your source, detailing the versions of the dependencies which work, and users who download your source can just use those. Then, however, we have distributions. If openSUSE or Debian wants to include your software, then it’s not just a case of calling into CPAN during the packaging process – distribution builds need to be repeatable, and work offline. And it’s not feasible for packagers to look after 30 versions of every library – generally a distribution will contain 1-3 versions of a given library, and all software in the distribution will be altered one way or another to build against their version of things. It’s a long, slow, arduous process. Life is easier for distribution packagers, the more the software released adheres to their perfect model – no non-source files in the distribution, minimal or well-formed dependencies on third parties, swathes of #ifdefs to handle changes in dependency APIs between versions, etc. Problem is, this can actively work against upstream development. Developers love npm or NuGet because it’s so easy to consume – asking them to abandon those tools is a significant impediment to developer flow. And it doesn’t scale – maybe a friendly upstream can drop one or two dependencies. But 10? 100? If you’re consuming a LOT of packages via the language package manager, as a developer, being told “stop doing that” isn’t just going to slow you down – it’s going to require a monumental engineering effort. And there’s the other side effect – moving from Yarn or Pip to a series of separate download/build/install steps will slow down CI significantly – and if your project takes hours to build as-is, slowing it down is not going to improve the project. Therein lies the rub. When a project has limited developer time allocated to it, spending that time on an effort which will literally make development harder and worse, for the benefit of distribution maintainers, is a hard sell. So, a concrete example: MonoDevelop. MD in Debian is pretty old. Why isn’t it newer? Well, because the build system moved away from a packager ideal so far it’s basically impossible at current community & company staffing levels to claw it back. Build-time dependency downloads went from a half dozen in the 5.x era (somewhat easily patched away in distributions) to over 110 today. The underlying build system changed from XBuild (Mono’s reimplementation of Microsoft MSBuild, a build system for Visual Studio projects) to real MSbuild (now FOSS, but an enormous shipping container of worms of its own when it comes to distribution-shippable releases, for all the same reasons & worse). It’s significant work for the MonoDevelop team to spend time on ensuring all their project files work on XBuild with Mono’s compiler, in addition to MSBuild with Microsoft’s compiler (and any mix thereof). It’s significant work to strip out the use of NuGet and Paket packages – especially when their primary OS, macOS, doesn’t have “distribution packages” to depend on. And then there’s the integration testing problem. When a distribution starts messing with your dependencies, all your QA goes out the window – users are getting a combination of literally hundreds of pieces of software which might carry your app’s label, but you have no idea what the end result of that combination is. My usual anecdote here is when Ubuntu shipped Banshee built against a new, not-regression-tested version of SQLite, which caused a huge performance regression in random playback. When a distribution ships a broken version of an app with your name on it – broken by their actions, because you invested significant engineering resources in enabling them to do so – users won’t blame the distribution, they’ll blame you. Releasing software is hard. /linux/1229/feed 10 1229 Long-term distribution support? /linux/1236 /linux/1236#comments Mon, 12 Feb 2018 15:55:09 +0000 /?p=1236 A question: how long is reasonable for an ISV to keep releasing software for an older distribution? When is it fair for them to say “look, we can’t feasibly support this old thing any more”. For example, Debian 7 is still considered supported, via the Debian LTS project. Should ISV app vendors keep producing builds built for Debian 7, with its ancient versions of GCC or CMake, rudimentary C++11 support, ARM64 bugs, etc? How long is it fair to expect an ISV to keep spitting out builds on top of obsolete toolchains? Let’s take Mono as an example, since, well, that’s what I’m paid to care about. Right now, we do builds for: Debian 7 (oldoldstable, supported until May 2018) Debian 8 (oldstable, supported until April 2020) Debian 9 (stable, supported until June 2022) Raspbian 8 (oldstable, supported until June 2018) Raspbian 9 (stable, supported until June 2020) Ubuntu 12.04 (EOL unless you pay big bucks to Canonical – but was used by TravisCI long after it was EOL) Ubuntu 14.04 (LTS, supported until April 2019) Ubuntu 16.04 (LTS, supported until April 2021) CentOS 6 (LTS, supported until November 2020) CentOS 7 (LTS, supported until June 2024) Supporting just these is a problem already. CentOS 6 builds lack support for TLS 1.2+, as that requires GCC 4.7+ – but I can’t just drop it, since Amazon Linux (used by a surprising number of people on AWS) is based on CentOS 6. Ubuntu 12.04 support requires build-dependencies on a secret Mozilla-team maintained copy of GCC 4.7 in the archive, used to keep building Firefox releases. Why not just use the CDN analytics to form my opinion? Well, it seems most people didn’t update their sources.list after we switched to producing per-distribution binaries some time around May 2017 – so they’re still hardcoding wheezy in their sources. And I can’t go by user agent to determine their OS, as Azure CDN helpfully aggregates all of them into “Debian APT-HTTP/1.x” rather than giving me the exact version numbers I’d need to cross-reference to determine OS release. So, with the next set of releases coming on the horizon (e.g. Ubuntu 18.04), at what point is it okay to say “no more, sorry” to an old version? Answers on a postcard. Or the blog comments. Or Twitter. Or Gitter. /linux/1236/feed 9 1236 Mono repository changes, beginning Mono vNext /linux/1204 /linux/1204#comments Fri, 24 Mar 2017 10:06:05 +0000 Up to now, Linux packages on mono-project.com have come in two flavours – RPM built for CentOS 7 (and RHEL 7), and .deb built for Debian 7. Universal packages that work on the named distributions, and anything newer. Except that’s not entirely true. Firstly, there have been “compatibility repositories” users need to add, to deal with ABI changes in libtiff, libjpeg, and Apache, since Debian 7. Then there’s the packages for ARM64 and PPC64el – neither of those architectures is available in Debian 7, so they’re published in the 7 repo but actually built on 8. A large reason for this is difficulty in our package publishing pipeline – apt only allows one version-architecture mix in the repository at once, so I can’t have, say, 4.8.0.520-0xamarin1 built on AMD64 on both Debian 7 and Ubuntu 16.04. We’ve been working hard on a new package build/publish pipeline, which can properly support multiple distributions, based on Jenkins Pipeline. This new packaging system also resolves longstanding issues such as “can’t really build anything except Mono” and “Architecture: All packages still get built on Jo’s laptop, with no public build logs” So, here’s the old build matrix: Distribution Architectures Debian 7 ARM hard float, ARM soft float, ARM64 (actually Debian 8), AMD64, i386, PPC64el (actually Debian 8) CentOS 7 AMD64 And here’s the new one: Distribution Architectures Debian 7 ARM hard float (v7), ARM soft float, AMD64, i386 Debian 8 ARM hard float (v7), ARM soft float, ARM64, AMD64, i386, PPC64el Raspbian 8 ARM hard float (v6) Ubuntu 14.04 ARM hard float (v7), ARM64, AMD64, i386, PPC64el Ubuntu 16.04 ARM hard float (v7), ARM64, AMD64, i386, PPC64el CentOS 6 AMD64, i386 CentOS 7 AMD64 The compatibility repositories will no longer be needed on recent Ubuntu or Debian – just use the right repository for your system. If your distribution isn’t listed… sorry, but we need to draw a line somewhere on support, and the distributions listed here are based on heavy analysis of our web server logs and bug requests. You’ll want to change your package manager repositories to reflect your system more accurately, once Mono vNext is published. We’re debating some kind of automated handling of this, but I’m loathe to touch users’ sources.list without their knowledge. CentOS builds are going to be late – I’ve been doing all my prototyping against the Debian builds, as I have better command of the tooling. Hopefully no worse than a week or two. edit I guess Ubuntu 12.04 is coming back too, despite being EOL, for TravisCI support. /linux/1204/feed 1 1204 A quick introduction to Flatpak /linux/1184 /linux/1184#comments Sun, 04 Dec 2016 10:44:34 +0000 Releasing ISV applications on Linux is often hard. The ABI of all the libraries you need changes seemingly weekly. Hence you have the option of bundling the world, or building a thousand releases to cover a thousand distribution versions. As a case in point, when MonoDevelop started bundling a C Git library instead of using a C# git implementation, it gained dependencies on all sorts of fairly weak ABI libraries whose exact ABI mix was not consistent across any given pair of distro releases. This broke our policy of releasing “works on anything” .deb and .rpm packages. As a result, I pretty much gave up on packaging MonoDevelop upstream with version 5.10. Around the 6.1 release window, I decided to take re-evaluate question. I took a closer look at some of the fancy-pants new distribution methods that get a lot of coverage in the Linux press: Snap, AppImage, and Flatpak. I started with AppImage. It’s very good and appealing for its specialist areas (no external requirements for end users), but it’s kinda useless at solving some of our big areas (the ABI-vs-bundling problem, updating in general). Next, I looked at Flatpak (once xdg-app). I liked the concept a whole lot. There’s a simple 3-tier dependency hierarchy: Applications, Runtimes, and Extensions. An application depends on exactly one runtime. Runtimes are root-level images with no dependencies of their own. Extensions are optional add-ons for applications. Anything not provided in your target runtime, you bundle. And an integrated updates mechanism allows for multiple branches and multiple releases parallel-installed (e.g. alpha & stable, easily switched). There’s also security-related sandboxing features, but my main concerns on a first examination were with the dependency and distribution questions. That said, some users might be happier running Microsoft software on their Linux desktop if that software is locked up inside a sandbox, so I’ve decided to embrace that functionality rather than seek to avoid it. I basically stopped looking at this point (sorry Snap!). Flatpak provided me with all the functionality I wanted, with an extremely helpful and responsive upstream. I got to work on trying to package up MonoDevelop. Flatpak (optionally!) uses a JSON manifest for building stuff. Because Mono is still largely stuck in a Gtk+2 world, I opted for the simplest runtime, org.freedesktop.Runtime, and bundled stuff like Gtk+ into the application itself. Some gentle patching here & there resulted in this repository. Every time I came up with an exciting new edge case, upstream would suggest a workaround within hours – or failing that, added new features to Flatpak just to support my needs (e.g. allowing /dev/kvm to optionally pass through the sandbox). The end result is, as of the upcoming 0.8.0 release of Flatpak, from a clean install of the flatpak package to having a working MonoDevelop is a single command: flatpak install --user --from For the current 0.6.x versions of Flatpak, the user also needs to flatpak remote-add --user --from gnome first – this step will be automated in 0.8.0. This will download org.freedesktop.Runtime, then com.xamarin.MonoDevelop; export icons ‘n’ stuff into your user environment so you can just click to start. There’s some lingering experience issues due the sandbox which are on my radar. “Run on external console” doesn’t work, for example, or

He would be a sleeper and I would be superwoman able to get it all done. I would be one of those mothers who makes organic baby food and takes her easy going child everywhere. Ah... rose colored glasses. Or perhaps first time mother syndrome?

I've slowly learned to embrace it all.

The good.

The bad.

The ugly.

Mostly because what choice did I have?

Even during my overwhelming moments I still had a baby to nurse, a diaper to change, or a cry that needed a cuddle.

But bottom line, I wasn't the mother I wanted to be because my baby wasn't the baby I thought he'd be. Does that make sense? I HATED the baby stage oh so much. The give and give and give that a baby demands was almost too much for me.

But I realize now was that during the baby stage I was laying the foundation.

Malone is now a toddler morphing into a preschooler he is exactly who I thought he'd be. He is smart and curious, full of adventure and funny. He wants to go on adventures and read books.

So, I'm finally feeling like the mother I was meant to be. I can do all of these things, and I can do them well. Even during those moments of toddler turning three power struggles and limit testing, I shine as a mother.

But a part of me feels so guilt for hating the baby stage so much.

<a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="" border="0" src="; />
2012/04/all-that-he-is.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-9152042091409635112Tue, 03 Apr 2012 10:19:00 +00002012-04-03T03:19:28.114-07:00Bucket ListSpring Bucket ListMother Nature can't seem to make up her mind. We've already had a heat streak with temps in the upper 80's but now it is cold again with a lot of wind. But the act of getting to this space and getting it out was always at the bottom of my to do list.

On March 2nd a large band of tornadoes swept through the country. And it seems like every other day, or at least once a week there are a few more. Tornadoes destroy homes and lives. I work in the insurance industry. Work has been quite busy, to say the least.

About a week after that, I took my first jog of spring. My run was going really well, I was proud of myself for getting out there and getting started again. Until an unfortunate run in with a small stone or stick that brought me to the ground in my neighbor's drive way about a half a mile from home. Said neighbor had to scoop me up and drive me up while my ankle swelled the size of a golf ball. It is still not better, but it is getting there.

And then we welcomed daylight savings. Anyone with a child knows what a potential train wreck that can be in terms of sleep patterns etc. Malone transitioned like a champ but somehow I'm still tired.

Next came a visit from Meme for St. Patrick's day weekend, followed by an illness that knocked my husband to his knees for about two days. He's just now feeling a bit better. Maybe?

In a nutshell, things are busy around these parts. Life is full, hectic, and amazing.

I desire this space. It is mine. And getting here is at the TOP of my list, starting today.

But, excuse me while I log into work and play a little catching up while no one is in the office to interrupt me.2012/03/catch-up.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-7691650983852175975Wed, 29 Feb 2012 23:25:00 +00002012-02-29T16:23:11.689-08:00GriefMarch 1.On March 1st five years ago, my world was changed forever. I was woken up from a dead sleep to my cell phone ringing. I didn't get the call in time. When I heard it ringing again, I knew something was really wrong. I don't remember who drew the short straw in my family that day. I don't think it was my grandmother and if I had to guess today, I'd say that it was my Uncle Jeff.

She was gone.

My mother had died.

I was living in New England. Everyone else, including my mother was in my hometown in Illinois.

We would later learn she died of alcohol poisoning. She was an alcoholic and I had noticed it was getting worse when I was home in January. She was trying hard to be sober while I was home. My eyes couldn't help but see her hands shake as we looked for wedding inspiration ideas at Michaels.

She was really excited about getting to play her role as mother of the bride in August. I remember the joy she felt as she gave her opinion on bridesmaids dresses. I wanted my girls to pick something they felt comfortable in. Each choose a dress that was different but within the same color scheme.

I had already picked out my dress and it was on order. But while we were at the bridal boutique she said "This one is like yours, try it on just for fun." I did. And she looked at me with beautiful tears in her eyes and told me what a beautiful bride I would be. It was the only time she would get to see me in a wedding dress.

After hearing the news of her death, I immediately went into shock. But just for a moment. They say that your best qualities come out during tragedy. Mine are organization and leadership.

I called my boss. It was early morning. He was an older gentleman with a sweet soul. I still remember his words.

"Say it ain't so, NJ. Say it ain't so."

But it was. I told him we were leaving for the airport. And I didn't know when I'd be back. I hoped there would still be a job for me to come back to. But I understood if business needs couldn't support it. I'd be back when I was ready to be a functional person again. Two weeks later, I wouldn't say that I was functioning. But at least I was managing.

The flight home was not without drama. The airport was in the middle of a remodel and the ticketing desk was at one end of the airport but the make shift security line was at the other. The line was long. We were not going to make it. I made it know that we NEEDED to get through ASAP, my mother had just died and we had to get to our family waiting for us. We made our flight, by the skin of our teeth.

When we finally got to my grandmother's house there were family friends and close family waiting. Word travels fast in a small town. Everyone was in shock. No one knew what to say, so they didn't really say anything.

One thing that really surprised me was the strength and love I felt from my friend Tim's dad. Tim was in my graduating class and committed suicide as a result of PTSD after returning home safely from a tour in Baghdad. A father without a son, comforting a daughter without a mother.

People filed in and out over the next few days.

Food came.

Flowers and plants came.

Arrangements were made.

I found the decisions to be very difficult. I wasn't sure on which hymns she would have wanted sung. I didn't know if she'd want communion. We had never talked about it. The only thing I knew was that she wanted to be cremated. My grandparents and uncles kept saying "it's your decision, you decide." But I didn't know what she wanted. So I tried to read their minds to figure out what they wanted the service to be like. After all, their world had been crushed too.

The next few days went by with a blur. We welcomed more friends. Memories were shared. Tears were shed.

We had the service.

I delivered a funny and beautiful eulogy.

People thought it was strange that I was so held together.

I didn't.

Someone had to hold us together.

I promised my husband I would address my feelings as they came up.

A few weeks after I got home, they did.

5 years later, they still do sometimes.

Its strange. I mostly feel like she was jipped.

It wasn't until after she passed that I really started to blossom into the person I wanted to be.

I grew up and out of the "wandering" years that are your early twenties.

I left my job in retail and got a position in a company I'm madly passionate about.

I got married and and a child.

I found some my of the best friends in the entire world.

I miss her the most when I look at Malone. He is a spitting image of me, and I of her. I can't give him a bath. It makes me miss her too much. It is such a mundane task but makes me think of her. Of all of the times she sat by my bath, caring for and nurturing me.

There are times when the grief hits me like a wave slamming my body against the shore.

But there is no place to go but forward.

Second by second.

Minute by minute.

Hour by hour.

Day by day.

<a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="" src="; border="0" />

2012/02/march-1.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-9144035437307758721Mon, 27 Feb 2012 01:58:00 +00002012-02-27T05:34:42.832-08:00Dear MaloneThis is what....<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" />When I saw them run by today, I was excited. Malone slept through the night several nights in a row. My morning hour was fruitful. Even though I was getting less sleep, I felt energized from having an hour in the morning to myself. I spent it working on this blog- writing, reading your blogs, commenting, and returning comments. Mike and I squeezed in a couch date during the weekend.

This week, things are different. Not bad, just different. Malone's sleep all over the place again. He is no longer reliably sleeping through the nights and he is waking early. Today's power hour lasted 15 minutes before I was interrupted by him.

Malone is shifting again and needing more from both of us. He is begging for more connection and yearns for more time at home. I want to give it to him. As a nurturer style parent, I will give it to him. But, in order to do that, I have to shift again too. It will mean moving from where I am most comfortable- out and about with him experiencing the world one toddler step at a time. It will mean mustering the energy for a power hour post bed time and knowing that it is likely the precious time in the morning will be uninterrupted just long enough to get my basis morning needs met.

Bathroom.

Teeth Brushed.

Coffee.

My husband pointed out to me that I never like these shifts. He is right. Just when something seems to fall into place, everything changes again leaving me feeling anxious and unsettled.

I am letting these feelings marinate. Mike is joining us for the second half of the trip. He couldn't get a ton of time off. When he arrives, Malone will be baptized into the church that is a cornerstone of my family- my grandparents have been members for the better part of 40 years, my parents were married there, I was baptized there, and we were married there.

The flight out was rather uneventful. We breezed through security. Malone slept and nursed. He didn't fuss much. There were no poo explosions on the plane. I have fit all of our things into a suitcase and a carry on. We will use our cloth diapers while we are here. I am excited to show them to my family as they have changed so much.

While I am home, I have an amazing conversation with my elderly grandmother about cloth diapers. I learn from her that disposable diapers were just beginning to become available when she was raising children. The reason she used cloth diapers was because she was unsure of how well disposables actually worked, felt guilty about throwing them away, and thought they were too expensive. She will tell me my mother felt the same way and also chose cloth diapers. I look her in the eye and tell her those are the same reasons I'm choosing cloth.

I didn't bring a stroller or much gear along. I have preferred to wear Malone, than use a stroller. This was a bit of a surprise for me, I didn't expect to fall in love with baby wearing. I am thankful that we talked ourselves out of the $700.00 Uppa Baby Vista stroller. Everything that I need for this trip has been borrowed (car seat, pack and play, stroller so my relatives can take Malone for a walk.

Malone is about 10 weeks old. His hair is red, which is lovely. It reminds me of my mom, who also had red hair. I am wearing him in a Sakura Bloom Linen Sling. This is really the first time that I've worn him forward facing. He likes it well enough, but seems to get overstimulated very easily.

At the tournament I run into just about everyone I know, friends of mine as well as my mother's friends. It is great to see some old friends. My mother's friends are happy to see us, but I sense their underlying grief. They are sad she isn't here to witness the joy of Malone. She passed away before I got married. It was sudden.

They mean well, but it's not coming out right.

We don't stay at the tournament long- just long enough to see and be seen. I don't want to be sad today.

She is gone.

He is here.

I have to hold it together. He needs me.

Besides, it is windy and getting chilly.2012/02/saturdays-story-behind-picture_18.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-4529407575589755329Fri, 17 Feb 2012 10:45:00 +00002012-02-17T09:54:02.037-08:00Insta-FridayInstaFriday.This week has gone by in SUCH a blur and too quickly for my taste. But it is the Friday of a long weekend and I am thrilled! Malone and I are off on Monday for President's Day and are already anticipating a "date" day filled with his friends and my mama friends.

In preparation for this InstaFriday, I went looked through my phone and realized the majority of the photos I take are of my son. While this is well and good, there are other beautiful things in my world that I want to capture besides just him. This week, I made a concentrated effort to capture a more of my entire world.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710055078999481586" border="0" />This french macaroon was the breakfast of champions on Sunday. Even better, it was made by my friend Nick who bakes at co-op. I stopped there on Sunday morning to pick up a few things for a Blessingway I was on my way to. (<a href=" article explains pretty well what a Blessingway is, if you're wondering).

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710055083608019586" border="0" />
As I came out of the co-op, I looked down and knew the day was going to be extraordinary. I have never come across double lucky pennies found on the ground.

The Blessingway was beautiful. While I was not the guest of honor, I was honored to be a guest. The ceremony involved each attendee presenting the mama with a bead, a story behind the chosen bead, and wishes for her labor, delivery, journey into motherhood as a mama of two, or transition of her first child into big sister. It was lovely and a wonderful way to spend a sunny Sunday morning.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710056071897772802" border="0" />Meme (aka my mother in law) was hear this weekend and enjoyed tons of time with Malone, including a nap. They were very easy to do and the Crayolas melted beautifully. I loved that we could all work on this together, Mike and I peeled the crayons and Malone broke them. My pin was originally from <a href=" Long Thread. On the home front, celebrated Valentine's Day the way we always do without gifts or cards, but with Chinese take out.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710056079684350450" border="0" />
Malone woke up super early one day this week. Literally, seconds after I woke up for my hour of me time (which I have found and is working out amazingly). I was defeated. On this particular day, I NEEDED this hour. BADLY.

But when Mike also woke up early, I realized that if we hustled we could have a breakfast date! We had a great time together and good food. It was a nice change of pace and I felt my grumpy shift into happy This picture cracks me up- Malone is drinking strawberry milk out of a to go coffee cup (best impromptu sippy cup ever). He has is cars lined up in a very specific order that only he understands.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710056705418371026" border="0" />

Malone's love for books is continuing to blossom. He wants to take a book with him almost everywhere he goes. This was on the way to daycare after breakfast our breakfast date.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5710056716874684002" border="0" />
On a dinner time play date, Malone was excited to play with a play laptop. No matter how many extra hours I work, how creative I am, or how much money I save, it is one of the only things in life that I cannot obtain or work hard to achieve. I have a wonderful sister in law and brother in law, but it just isn't the same as someone with whom I've shared whole life with.

Because of this, I am (my husband too) 100% committed to attempting to have more children and/or adopting. We are starting to think about trying again, probably in the fall. If all goes as well as it did the last time, and we conceive quickly again, our children would be about 4 years apart. A good age, far enough a part to have different friends but close enough to play well together. The same number of years apart as my mother and her brothers.

It is not hard to notice Malone is getting very independent. He travels well, he is ridiculously obedient, he does well eating out. I can read while he plays by himself on the floor or is engaged in an art project. Planning a girls night out doesn't involve the thoughts of pumping.

In short, the days of him needing me 100% of the time are ending.

And I have a chance to find a piece of me again. The piece that I lost when I was so entrenched in the world of baby. For the first time in a long time, I am planning things for me. Independent of him.

I am so committed to giving Malone a sibling. I desire it with heart of hearts.

But I hate the baby stage, oh so much. The constant need it puts on my mind and my body. I'm not a baby person. I'm just not.

I am a toddler/preschool person. I've known since my days as a nanny. Yes, totally all the way in awe of the learning, the singing, the exploration, the speech, and the imagination.

And I can't get this quote out of my mind. I heard it this weekend at a production of The Vagina Monologues that my friend Tara was in.

"My vagina helped release a giant baby. It thought it would be doing more of that. It's not. Now, it wants to travel..." Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologues

<a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="" src="; border="0" />

2012/02/sibling-angst.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-8153454801961965495Sat, 11 Feb 2012 10:55:00 +00002012-02-11T10:03:22.044-08:00Saturday's Story Behind The PictureI've changed my mind about doing Saturday's Story Behind The Picture on the first and third Saturday of the month. Mostly, because I don't know I will remember which Saturday to post and which to leave off.

Without further ado, here is today's Saturday Behind The Picture.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5707830680286188706" border="0" />

We are at the Boston Children's Museum in their 3 and under room. Even though it is a bit of a drive from our house (an hour and a half), we've been coming at least once a week for the last few weeks. It is early August and hot. The museum and car ride have air conditioning, our house doesn't. The travel to and from the museum is perfect. I catch a car nap on both ways.

Every time.

Without fail.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" />
Malone is about 14 months, give or take. We spend most of our time today in the 3 and under room. We are in the gated off area designated for crawlers. Malone is walking, but there are no crawlers using the space right now. And when there are we either leave or ask if they mind if we stay.

They never seem to mind.

This window is where we spend most of our time today. Malone has recently discovered the joy of pointing and it seems like he is always pointing at something. Today he is very interested in the people strolling along the river or dining al fresco. Every one in awhile, a boat comes by. That seems to be what pleases him most of all.

You can't really see his outfit well, but it is a green and white striped one piece shortie outfit from Baby Gap. I purchased it on super clearance the summer he was born, taking a risk on that the size would work out. The size is 12-18 months. My long and lean child has plenty of room in this, despite having on a cloth diaper.

I have set the ball rolling at work and they are looking for a full time position for me to return to, after being a SHAM and working part time.

I'm already mourning the loss of this kind of day. The one where I wake up and decide to take Malone to the museum.

Just because we can.2012/02/saturdays-story-behind-picture.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-6474807968794976006Thu, 09 Feb 2012 11:01:00 +00002012-02-09T03:16:15.487-08:00The Search For My Hour. This morning I set out trying to find the extra hour I spoke about yesterday.

I tried to find it last night, but by 9:00 pm I just don't have it in me to really make productive use of time. I found myself making popcorn and zoning out to bad tv. I hope to shift the use of that hour too- maybe to reading or crafting. But for now, it is what it is.

My alarm went off at 5:00 am and I laid in bed for a good ten minutes trying to peel myself out. It was cozy, but I want and need this extra time.

The house is so quiet and perfect. I am afraid that at any second Malone is going to wake up and my time will be done. My focus will have to shift away from me and back to motherhood. So far, so good. He should be up in about 30 minutes which means that I will actually have found an hour and a half.

I am proud of myself for not wasting this time. It is precious. I have been intentional with most of it. Facebook only got 5 minutes of it. The other 55 minutes were spent returning comments, visiting your blogs, and reading entries/commenting from Shell's PYHO.

I will finish up this post and use the last few minutes to work on getting my master cleaning plan into a printable word document. I love lists and I need to be able to cross things off as I go. The complete master copy will go in my household management binder that I am attempting to create.

I don't have all of the answers and I am already seeing flaws/changes to make to this process. But I am enjoying the fruit that this intentional work is already starting to bear.2012/02/search-for-my-hour.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-117607698459694935Wed, 08 Feb 2012 17:47:00 +00002012-02-08T10:42:11.136-08:00Underwhelmed.I used to see the weekend as a time to play catch up on the things that were neglected all week around the house. This past Saturday however, I took a look around. There wasn't a space in my house I could go where my eyes didn't immediately dart to areas to clean and spaces to declutter. I felt cagey and anxious. I was snippy with my husband and stressed out.

Something needed to change ASAP.

I spent the rest of the weekend taking time to write down every single chore/housework task that needs to happen on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. I wrote down projects that need to be completed. I made a list of things to put on Craigslist. I finally took the time to make a budget that balances to zero each month. I made a meal plan for the week.

When I had all of the data right in front of me, I was shocked to see how much there is to really do.

I want to do this for me, so that I won't be a crazy stressed out basket-case. But even more than that, Malone deserves to live in a clean and well organized space. Mike deserves a peaceful environment.

I'm trying really hard to make sure all of the daily tasks as well as a few of the weekly ones are accomplished each day. I'm keeping the laundry moving. Mike is pitching in too.

I'm finding I still need an hour or so more than what I currently have and working to find it. I will find it.

Somewhere.

Somehow.

But for now, I am enjoying being underwhelmed by it all.

<a href="; target="_blank"><img alt="" src="; border="0" />

2012/02/underwhelmed.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)12tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-4450709907829088136Sun, 05 Feb 2012 18:02:00 +00002012-02-07T06:32:36.076-08:00Just WriteParentingMisadventures in the darkest hour. Each night, Malone tends to end up in our bed sometime between midnight and 5:00 am. There is usually a one in four chance that either Mike or I will take a few kicks to the rib by his tiny little feet or he'll show up with some random treasure from his room.

Last night was no exception. He crawled up into our bed right around 3:00 am, bringing his Kleen Kanteen water bottle and wicked cough with him. He had a hard time setting into our space and was playing a really sweet game of "I want my water, here I'm done, I want it back, no take it." This went on for a half hour or so before I realized four things.

1. The water is probably helping to sooth his throat.
2. No one was going to get any sleep if Malone stayed in bed with us.
3. His water bottle was almost empty.
4. It is cold, dark, and I do not want to get out of bed to remedy #2 or #3.

I get out anyway, realizing quality sleep is more important.

So, here we are standing next to my bed at 3:30 am. I am thinking "I am SO SMART, my water bottle is here. I can just unscrew his water bottle and pour some of my water into his bottle. This is the BEST IDEA EVER."

Did I mention it is pitch black?

The pour goes well. I screw the cap of Malone's Kleen Kanteen on. I am even more impressed with myself. I mentally give myself a high five.

Then, I decide I should test out the Kleen Kanteen to make sure the lid is screwed on properly.

I hold out my hand and pour.

FAIL.

I do not realize that Malone is standing right underneath my hand.

It is still pitch black, remember?

The cap is not screwed on properly after all.

Malone is now a little wet and hysterical.

CRAP.

So much for not waking Michael up during this process and getting Malone to sleep in his room in a timely manner.

I try screwing the lid on (again in the dark) a few more times. Something isn't lining up right. I need light.

I take Malone into his room and tell him I'll be right there. I don't want to fully wake him up (as if the water didn't already do that!).

I go to the kitchen and stumble for the light.

Ahh.. it has two different screw sections. Who knew. One to seal the lid and one for the interchangeable tops.

Back to Malone's room I go. The cap is tight.

He's still mad. He's sitting up, crying hysterically.

"Are you angry at me?"

He's so worked up he's short of breath. "Yyyyyyeah. I'm mmmmmmad."

"I'm sorry buddy. I poured the water on your by mistake. It was an accident. Okay?"

"Do you want new jammies on?"

They're not super wet. Mostly because the water hit his head.

"Nnnnnooo. I waaaaaaaant my water."

I hand it to him and he takes a small sip. He's calmed down a little bit.

"There is no more left, Mama."

Oh, for Pete's sake.

Toddler logic is going to kill me. He knows the water poured out but he didn't see or hear me put more in when I was in the kitchen dealing with the blasted cap.

I don't want to fight about this one. Pick your battles right?

"Okay buddy, I will go and fill it up. You stay here."

Back to the kitchen I go, to "fill up" an already full water bottle.

I turn the faucet for a second to prove that I'm filling it.

I come back and hand it to him. He has calmed down, but asks for a tissue.

I am so smart. I anticipated this need while I was kitchen 2.75 seconds go.

I wipe his nose. I tell him I'm sorry one last time.

He reaches for my hand.

And we both fall back asleep.

****************
I'm linking this up with Heather at <a href=" Extraordinary Ordinary.

<a href=" src="; border="0" />

<a href=" />

2012/02/misadventures-in-darkest-hour.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (NJ @ A Pocket Full Of Dinosaurs)6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7191745063041465694.post-2991787645112943227Sat, 04 Feb 2012 18:35:00 +00002012-02-04T13:58:55.292-08:00The story behind this picture.Satruday's Story Behind The PictureI've decided that I am going to start blogging through old pictures on the first and third Saturdays of each month. I'd like to remember the story or emotions behind and write them down before I forget. Also, it will weave a nice history/legacy for our family.

This is Malone in February of 2011. He is almost 20 months old. We're on a play date with some of his friends at a place called Universal Kids where there are slides, ball pits, things to climb on/in, and dramatic play stations(Kitchen, Space, Dr.'s Office, etc)

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705360974161492546" border="0" />
He's wearing one of my favorite outfits from this "stage". He didn't get to wear it too often because I deemed it too nice to wear to daycare. The tiniest traces of baby are still left in his cheeks.

He was shyly confident that day. He was excited to see his friends and play but stuck close by me. We are still trying to find our rhythm as I went from full time SHAM to a working mama just a few months before. We are nursing ASAP when he gets home from daycare. I don't regret the change I've made for my family, but I wonder if I will in years to come. I am despite to see my friends (the mamas of his friends) today. I've gone from seeing them several times a week to squeezing in a weekend date, if I'm lucky.

Today, I was lucky.

<img border="2" src="
