Sarney Filho defende Museu do Índio

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />
Festa do moqueado na Aldeia Maracanã

O momento é crítico e pede-se a atenção de todos ao chamado das lideranças indígenas da Aldeia Maracanã. Os países signatários da convenção se comprometem a consultar os povos interessados quando forem previstas medidas legislativas ou administrativas que os afetem diretamente, garantindo a efetiva participação dos povos indígenas e tribais na tomada de decisões. Nós, do Movimento Indígena Revolucionário, denunciamos, na ocasião, que a Convenção 169 da OIT está sendo completamente desrespeitada pelo Governo Federal e pelas empresas privadas. Nós denunciamos que a Convenção não foi aplicada devidamente desde sua ratificação até os dias de hoje, mantendo impunes todas as violações cometidas contra as nações indígenas. Temos como exemplos desses crimes: as construções de hidrelétricas; explorações do subsolo, com mineração em Terras Indígenas, sem consulta prévia aos indígenas; assassinatos de lideranças e guerreiros indígenas; prisões arbitrárias de indígenas; Decreto 7056/09 – que tirou a estabilidade da FUNAI; Portaria 303 da AGU; genocídio dos Guarani Kaiowá; etc. Carlos Pankararu explica ao Ministro Sílvio como a Convenção 169 está sendo totalmente rasgada no Brasil: <a href="; Se realmente o Governo se interessasse em preservar o cerrado, não teria cortado as árvores onde os indígenas do Acampamento Indígena Revolucionário estavam acampados durante os nove primeiros meses do ano de 2010.<a href="; ;

Zahy Guajajara;
Integrante da ocupação indígena Aldeia Maracanã.

2012/06/manifesto-na-aldeia-maracana.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Acampamento Indigena)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-585225950989449275.post-7234043640961004770Tue, 12 Jun 2012 15:22:00 +00002012-06-12T08:22:18.765-07:00Carta do Rio + 20

CARTA DO RIO + 20 REIVINDICAÇÕES

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0cm 0c

In fact, in the sense I have always used the term on this blog, being a "Catholic reader" means having "catholic tastes"-- reading widely, not narrowly; being willing to confront ideas one does not already embrace, and to sift works for any truth they may contain. In fact, if the term means nothing else, being a Catholic reader means reading for truth even more than for enjoyment, truth being found even in works that don't pretend to be factual. I have often made the case that fiction and poetry are capable of conveying deeper truths than most nonfiction. Explicitly, I have presented a method for discerning the truth found in works of nonfiction, and implicitly, through my own discussion and analysis of imaginative literature, I have conveyed the way we can discern and weigh the truths such works may contain.

Being "A Catholic Reader"

One of my personal aspirations for this blog is the hope that what I write here will provide a model of what it means to be a "Catholic reader," so that others will be encouraged to read more broadly, more deeply, and with greater profit. However, I also believe that readers need to be educated in how to read well, so that they may be able not only to derive the greatest benefit, but also to read works full of bad ideas with discernment and without being damaged by those ideas. I can recall, not without a shiver, more than a few books I read in my childhood and adolescence that I never should have laid eyes on at that age, lacking as I did both worldly experience and intellectual and spiritual discernment that might have allowed me to absorb much of the good they may have contained while remaining shielded from the evil. Fortunately, I retained a degree of innate innocence that protected me from being attracted to the evil presented, even if I didn't know how to digest such works for to derive the good they might have provided. Eventually, thanks to good teachers who showed discretion but didn't believe in pre-digesting literature for their students, I learned the art that I now call "reading like a Catholic."

This idea that readers need to be specially trained and equipped to read certain kinds of works is not a new one -- it has existed for as long as the study and teaching of literature has existed. In fact, one might define "literature" as any writing that yields its greatest benefits to those who have learned to read carefully and well. (One of these days I hope to write about the way that, for millennia, people were trained to write simply by first being trained to read with discernment and understanding, a practice that has virtually disappeared in the modern world.)

The Church has long understood that literature works on levels that are not immediately apparent, levels that can affect spiritual wellbeing as well as intellectual understanding. For this reason, for several centuries, beginning at the birth of the modern era, the Church maintained a list of books that ordinary Catholics were forbidden to read without permission, the index librorum prohibitorum (or simply the Index). Immediately following the Protestant revolution that so deeply shook the Church, the function of the Index originally was to combat the rapid spread of heretical ideas (a possibility that arose from the recent invention of the printing press), but the Index continued well into the twentieth century, listing all sorts of books that were deemed dangerous to Catholic readers or injurious to the Church. However, these books were not absolutely prohibited -- Catholics who had a real need to consult them could do so, with permission of the competent religious authority. That permission, ordinarily given by one's local bishop or immediate religious superior, was extended to those who could demonstrate that they possessed both the intellectual and the spiritual maturity to read the proscribed work with benefit and without harm. (By the way, in those days many libraries similarly maintained "closed stacks," and readers had to submit a request for books to be retrieved -- permission that might have been denied with cause.)

My purpose today is not to debate whether we are now better off without the Index. Catholics today are certainly freer to read anything we choose, with little guidance from the Church other than the vague suggestion that we should read (as we should do anything else) with "an informed conscience" and avoid anything dangerous to faith and morals. But, as anyone who has ever struggled with the problem of free will knows, this simply shifts the burden of discernment and responsibility from Church authorities (who presumably would know what is and isn't spiritually and morally deleterious) onto the individual (who often does not). So one might debate whether the Church has done us any favors in abandoning the Index.

How do we inform our conscience? By knowing, believing, and internalizing at a deep level the Catholic faith; by "putting on the mind of Christ." (Another area in which, arguably, the Church has given little assistance in recent decades.) If we have done a good job of this, we will be able to recognize harmful trash when we encounter it and will reject it with disgust. However, under the burden of this same freedom, timid and tender pious souls may choose to remain within the cozy confines of the "Catholic literary ghetto," thus avoiding much that is harmful but also remaining ignorant of more challenging books that actually contain a great deal that is instructive and beneficial. Meanwhile these poor souls are stuck reading only books written by, and intended for, Catholics, more than a few of which trivially inoffensive and sometimes even downright banal. (Flannery O'Connor had some very acid comments about this sort of "pious trash.") For myself and for you, dear reader, I wish better than that, which is why I will soldier on here at A Catholic Reader, endeavoring to expose you to a better choice of reading material and better reading habits that will equip you to get the most out of it.

Forbidden Ideas -- or Idealogy?

All of which brings me to the matter that inspired me to write this post. It's Lent and, like many Catholics, I have taken on some additional spiritual reading during this holy season, the better to inspire my soul and inform my conscience. One of the books I'm reading is Fr. Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange's Life Eternal (published originally in French in 1950 and in English two years later). Father Garrigou-Lagrange (or G-L, if that's easier to read) was a brilliant Dominican priest and spiritual theologian, not to mention one of the finest twentieth-century interpreters of the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas. The topic of Life Eternal is eschatology, something one seldom finds treated in more recent books, and then only glancingly; having read a large portion of G-L's vast masterwork, The Three Ages of the Spiritual Life (massive but extremely lucid), I was eager to learn what he has to say about the Last Things.

The book, as I say, came out a few years after the end of the Second World War. Its original French title is L'Éternelle vie et la profondeur de l'âme. Soon after it appeared, a Benedictine called Patrick Cummins produced the English translation, Life Eternal, subtitled (by the publisher, I suppose) "A theological treatise on the Four Last Things--Death, Judgment, Heaven, Hell." This was published by B. Herder Books (now defunct, but then an important publisher of Catholic books in America) in 1952; after Herder went out of business two or three decades ago, TAN Books reprinted the title in 2009. In 2016, however, Baronius Press sued TAN Books over copyright violations of various titles to which they said they owned the rights, including a number of Fr. Garrigou-Lagrange's books. The suit concluded in favor of Baronius in 2019, and since that time even tattered old copies of Life Eternal have become virtually impossible to find. Those few that are offered for sale command astronomical prices. However (sshh, don't tell Baronius Press!), you can read what appears to be the version reprinted by TAN Books online <a href="; target="_blank">in the EWTN online library. Before I became aware of the copyright controversy, I was able to locate a PDF scan of the TAN reprint which I subsequently turned into a MOBI file that I can read on my Kindle.

I would spare you all of this boring business about the book's publishing history if not for a problem I discovered in the English translation when I compared it to the original French edition. That problem is a significant discrepancy between the two, one that I hope will be addressed by any future English edition. [If you read French, you can verify what I'm about to point out by comparing the version of Life Eternal in ETWN's library with <a href="; target="_blank">the original French version, also available online, L'Éternelle vie et la profondeur de l'âme, which, as far as I know, does not violate French copyright. Traditionally, theological and spiritual works written by members of religious orders have been offered to the Church -- and the world -- free of copyright.]

Since the art of translation are inevitably interpretations, it has long been my practice, whenever possible, to read any book in which I am seriously interested in the language in which it was written. This is why, despite the convenience of being able to read the English version on my Kindle, I decided to buy a print edition of the French original. I was fortunate to find a beautifully bound hardback copy of the French original, which had been retired from the library of the School of Divinity at Saint Louis University. (Their loss is my gain.) I've been nibbling at both English and French versions, which is a bit awkward because chapter numbering differs somewhat between the two. A couple of days ago, when I was trying to switch from the French back to the English (hoping to read in bed after lights-out, on my Kindle Paperwhite), I discovered that the section I had reached in the French edition simply does not exist in the English one. It has been deliberately excised (by the publisher or by the translator? Can't tell).

I had finished the first two sections of the book, the first on the soul in this present life and the second on death and judgment, and had arrived at the section on Hell. The first chapter of this section lays out the Scriptural basis for believing that Hell (a) exists and (b) is a permanent state, providing first the Old Testament warrants and then the testimony of the New Testament. The final part of the chapter, in the French original, is headed: "Note: Confirmation," with the subheading, "La Maçonnerie, qui nie l'enfer, est une preuve de son existence." This is the part that does not appear in the Cummins translation -- at least, not in the version reprinted by TAN Books. Why not? Well, one can only speculate, but the subheading of the section may provide a clue -- for those of you who don't read French, this subheading introduces the section as "Masonry, which denies Hell, is a proof of its existence." You can <a href=" my translation of the entire passage here.

Now, "Masonry" is one of those things that is never discussed these days in mainstream Catholic media; to do so will immediately brand one as some kind of loony fringe element, possibly a "rad Trad," certainly someone who has failed to imbibe the "spirit of Vatican II." Fr. Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange, however, was not some fringey loon but an eminent spiritual theologian -- whose name, of course, is barely even known today, fewer than sixty years after his death, which occurred almost simultaneously with the end of the Second Vatican Council. Yet he was a man of considerable eminence and influence in his day; <a href="; target="_blank">as Wikipedia points out, "The Osservatore Romano of 9-10 December 1950 lists Garrigou-Lagrange among the names of the preparatory commission for the definition of the Assumption of Mary." He was the thesis supervisor of the future Pope (now Saint) John Paul II. Therefore, it seems strange to me that the American edition of his work on the Life Eternal omitted this section of his chapter on the warrants for the doctrine of Hell as a real place/condition that, once entered, can never be escaped.

Having read the section, I will say that, although some thoroughly modern Catholics would probably sniff and say that the view it presents is outmoded, I found that it presents a startlingly accurate description of the world we live in today. Let's see if you agree with me on this: here is my translation of the entire passage:

Freemasonry, which denies the reality of Hell, is proof of its existence

Reading Leo XIII’s encyclical on freemasonry, <a href="; target="_blank">Humanum genus (April 1884), as well as the most objective works on this question, which are summarized in the article on free-masonry in the <a href="; target="_blank">Dictionnaire de Théologie Catholique, one can see what freemasonry’s real purpose is.

What Leo says is essentially this: Since the malice of the devil first divided the world into two camps, truth has had its defenders but also its implacable adversaries. These are the two opposing cities of which St. Augustine speaks: the City of God, represented by the Church of Jesus Christ and its doctrine of eternal salvation, and that of Satan, with its continual revolt against revealed truth. The struggle between these two armies is never-ending; and, ever since the birth of Freemasonry at end of the seventeenth century united all the secret societies, Masonic sects have organized a war of extermination against God and the Church. Their aim is to de-Christianize life—individual, family, social, and international life; toward this end, all their members regard themselves as a worldwide fraternity, constituting a rival church, an international and secret association.

At the end of the encyclical, Pope Leo points out how these clandestine sects insinuate themselves into the confidence of princes under the false pretext of protecting their authority from the domination of the Church; in reality, their purpose is to undermine all power, as experience has proven; for then, says the Pope, these cunning men flatter the multitudes, making their eyes glitter at the prospect of a prosperity in which kings and the Church are the only enemies. In short, the Freemasons plunge the nations into the abyss of all evils, into revolutionary agitation and general ruin, which benefit only a few cunning few.

This real goal, to de-Christianize society, was initially masked by more seemly purpose: in the beginning, the Ma-sonic sect presented itself as a philanthropic and philosophical society. But then, after its triumphs, it discarded the mask and now glories in all the revolutions that have shaken Eu-rope, in particular the French Revolution, with all the laws against the clergy and religious orders, with the secularization of schools, the removal of the crucifix from hospitals and courts, laws permitting divorce—everything that de-Christianizes the family and diminishes the authority of the father, replacing it with that of an atheistic state. Freemasonry follows the maxim, “divide and conquer”: to separate kings and states from the Church; to weaken states by separating them from each other in order to dominate them all through hidden international power; to provoke class conflicts by setting workers against their bosses; to weaken and undermine patriotic love for one’s homeland; to separate spouses in the family, by making divorce legal and ever easier; to separate children from their parents in order to make them the prey of schools that claim to be neutral but in fact are anti-religious and of the atheistic state.

Freemasonry also claims to work for the progress of civilization, rejecting all divine revelation, all religious authority; mysteries and miracles must be banished from the scientific worldview. Original sin, the sacraments, grace, prayers, and duties towards God are absolutely rejected, as is the distinction between good and evil, good being reduced to the merely useful, while all moral obligation disappears. Punishment in the afterlife no longer exists. Authority comes not from God but from the sovereign people.

Freemasonry is ruled particularly by hatred of Jesus Christ; blasphemy and imprecation are especially reserved for His holy name. Masons even procure consecrated hosts just so that they can profane them in the most outrageous manner. Apostasy is required of any man once he is admit-ted into the higher ranks of the sect. In the eyes of initiates, just as in the eyes of hardened Jews, the condemnation of Jesus of Nazareth by the judicial authority is perfectly justified and the crucifixion legitimized. Therefore the Masons fight against the Catholic Church as their enemy. Finally, the notion of God, which at first was tolerated, finally is struck out of the Masonic vocabulary.

The satanic perversity of the Masonic project finally can be seen in the secrecy in which their designs are shrouded. Their principle objectives, discussed in secretive committees, are completely unknown to ordinary laymen and even to many lower-ranking affiliates. As for the initiates, when they are received into the higher ranks, they must swear never to reveal the secrets of the society, and these same people who pretend to be defenders of freedom, surrender themselves completely to an occult power, which they do not know and whose most hidden purposes they will probably never be aware of. Robbery, suppression of highly important documents, sacrilege, murder, violation of all laws divine and human--any of these might be required of them, yet, on pain of death, they would have to carry out these abominable orders.

A tree is judged by its fruits; the root of this evil tree is hatred of God, of Christ the Redeemer and of His Church. Freemasonry is therefore a satanic work, which is in its own way a proof of the existence of hell, of the very hell whose existence this sect claims to deny.

It is not surprising, therefore, that the Church has repeatedly condemned Freemasonry, under Clement XII, Benedict XIV, Leo XII, Gregory XVI, Pius IX, Leo XIII. The Holy Office, in its circular of February 1871 to the episcopate, even imposes the obligation to denounce the ringleaders and secret heads of these dangerous societies; the son is not exempt from denouncing his father nor a father his son. The husband must act in the same way with regard to his wife, the brother with regard to his sister . The general good of society requires this severity. The reason for this decision of the Holy Office is based on the trickery to which the lodges resort, by supplying the public with phony names.

Masonry, the first to deny hell, is therefore, by its satanic perversity, a proof of hell’s existence. This is evident above al in the profanations of the Eucharist, which are clearly inspired by the devil and presuppose his faith in the Real Presence. The devil's faith, as St. Thomas explains, is not the infused, saving faith that comes of humble submission of the spirit to the authority of God the Revealer, but an acquired faith that is based only on the evidence of miracles, for the devil sees that these are true miracles, quite distinct from the conjuring tricks that he can produce. These horrible profanations of consecrated hosts are thus in their own way a perceptible proof of satanic malice, and therefore of the hell to which Satan is condemned. Thus, the devil himself confirms the testimony of Scripture and Tradition, which he would prefer to deny.

From time to time, as in the war that has just ended [the Second World War], we see evidence of an appalling hatred, as if hell is opening up beneath our feet. This confirms Revelation: crimes which go unrepented will be punished by everlasting suffering.

2022/12/being-catholic-reader-in-modern-world.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-244060080311485037.post-900821492055512872Sat, 06 Feb 2021 21:45:00 +00002021-03-31T10:41:11.068-05:00apocalyptic literatureFatimaHannah ArendthistoryJohn Miltonpagan worldviewParadiseLostThe Story God is Telling at the Present Time
<a href="; style="clear: right; display: inline; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;">

AFTER A YEAR OR TWO of particularly alarming and distressing events in the world and the Church, many of us have begun to think of the present day as something like the End of the World (at least, "the world as we know it") and to wonder if things will ever get better instead of continuing to get steadily, and ever more rapidly, worse. Some even claim that we are in the End Times and look forward eagerly to the Second Coming of Christ, so that we can all be put out of our misery and admitted into the paradise of Eternity.

Plenty of other people pooh-pooh this apocalyptic fervor and point out that there have been many previous periods of Very Bad Things Happening, and yet the world did not end but continued to totter on -- why should our own age be any different? In between these two views stands the great mass of humanity alive today, bewildered, distressed, but trying to get on with their lives as best they can, much as they have always done.

<a href="; style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="522" data-original-width="469" height="320" src="; />

In the pagan worldview,
even the gods do not control history.
Here, blind Fortuna spins her wheel.

I'm not going to try to tell anyone which of these three stances I think they should adopt -- the truth is, I am sympathetic to all of them -- but I do want to mention a book that I'm currently reading, which has reminded me of an important fact: Christians hold (or should hold) a particular view of history, and that view should shape the way we live in our own, present day.

The Divine Historian

Several years ago, in <a href=" post about the Catholic historian Christopher Dawson, I referred to the Christian view of history and the way it differs from both the ancient pagan view that history, like all of nature, is caught up in an inexorable cycle of endless repetition, and the modern view that history tells a tale of continual human progress, which will culminate in a manmade Utopia.

The Christian view, in sharp counter-distinction to either of those I just mentioned, is that we already know the overall outline of all human history, and it is bound and controlled not by human effort or ingenuity but by its Author, the Divine Logos. It is the story told in the Bible, with a beginning, a middle, and an end, all conceived and written by God Himself from the beginning of Time.

The point we need to grasp today is that the birth of the Christian Church at Pentecost marks the beginning of the end of the story. Christ's Crucifixion and the salvation of souls effected by it was the climax of the Story, and everything after that is denouement or resolution. We are reluctant to recognize this, because it means that our lives play out in the last chapter. In other words, in a very real sense you and I and every Christian who ever lived or ever shall live are in the End Times. As minor characters in the final chapter of a Story that is already complete in the mind of God, our role as followers of Christ entrusted with the mission of spreading the Gospel is not to "sing a new Church into being" (as one particularly heretical modern hymn enjoins) but to tell the Story and prepare the world for the very End of the Age. We should be eager to do so, because those of us who play our parts well will appear in the sequel, the Neverending Story of the life of the world to come.

Are You a "Functional Pagan"?
And yet many of us, although we may truly believe that all times are in God's hand and that the end of the story we are living out has already been written, tend not to behave or think as if that is quite literally true. When we look to the past, we often do so with nostalgia, yearning for some lost time when it was easy to live a decent Christian life -- whether that past time was the 1950s, the 1300s, or the first age of the Church; and when we think of the future, we look forward to a time when things will have "returned to normal." We do not accept the idea that things will continue to get worse until the end and our duty is simply to carry on, here in this difficult present moment.

Unfortunately, this all-too-common way of thinking about the present day -- as a bad patch in between two better times -- more closely resembles the pagan way of viewing history than the Christian: that is, we act as if history is a never-ending cycle of good and bad times that come and go as Dame Fortuna spins her wheel and, if we just hang on, the turning wheel eventually will raise to the heights those who are now in the pits -- until the wheel spins a little further and brings us back down again.

Our Times Are in God's Hand -- and They Are Growing Shorter All the Time
<a href="; style="clear: right; display: inline; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="329" height="320" src="; />

What if we face the (entirely Christian) idea that our present day, as well as the immediate future, truly are part of God's Story, and that we are nearer the end than the beginning of that Story?

I recently began reading a book that has helped me face this possibility. It's José María Zavala's book, <a href="; target="_blank">El Secreto Mejor Guardado de Fátima: Una Investigación 100 Años Después. (Not available in English; the translation of the title is "The Best-Kept Secret of Fatima: An Investigation 100 Years Later.") I became aware of the book while reading an article about <a href="; target="_blank">a blog post on the 1Peter5 blog, which referred to this book in positive terms. The context in which the reference was made was a discussion attempting to make sense of the insanity of our world at this present time, so I suppose that is what first attracted my attention. The article talked about a version of the "second part of the Third Secret" that supposedly has been hushed up by successive Pontiffs.

As I began to read Zavala's book, I soon realized that it has a lot more in it than simply a discussion of a part of the Fatima account that is not generally known, nor is it merely some sensationalistic exposé (although it does exposes quite a few things of interest and connects them in ways that I find very illuminating).

What really caught and held my attention is the way Zavala puts the events of Fatima (and those of our current day) into a historical perspective, along with other approved apparitions as well as historical, secular events stretching back as far as the seventeenth century. In Zavala's view (and I find it a persuasive one), these events have been pointing toward and leading up to the End that is coming. In fact, Zavala seems convinced that we are already in the End Times (however long they may take to play out) and have been for some time -- at least since the miraculous events at Fatima, but probably since long before that. His references to the Marian apparition at La Salette in the mid-nineteenth century and the revelations to Margaret Mary Alacoque two centuries earlier indicate that God has been trying to get our attention for some time, to remind us to turn back to Him and be saved before it's too late, while the modern world hurtles toward its destruction.

In chapter 4 of his book, Zavala discusses various historic periods which have manifested just how monstrous man can be when he throws off religion, culture, tradition, and human respect in favor of Godless ideology. He points to events throughout the modern period when frenzies of violence have occurred so terrible as to be clearly demonic. These include:

the French Revolution

the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia

the Spanish Civil War

the two World Wars

All of these show a world essentially at war with itself -- wars not to gain or regain territory, as most wars in the past had been, but wars fought to impose a new ideology, a brutal and godless one. As the forces moving the modern world have become more openly atheistic, the unimaginable brutality inflicted by ideological atheism in all its forms has become more frequent and more prolonged, until today it seems that hardly a day goes by without some new and terrible development. The modern juggernaut is fast approaching the lip of the abyss, while only now, too late perhaps to slow its pace or divert its course, more and more ordinary people are waking up to the hair-raising reality of the disastrous course of our world.

The point that Zavala makes repeatedly in his book is that the Church (and, through it, the world) has been warned time and again, but because the evil of the World was already at work within the Church, these warnings have not been clearly and energetically proclaimed, and therefore the Church Herself (i.e., Her members, including those of highest responsibility) must share in the blame for the state of the world.

One of the things that Zavala emphasizes is the way these extraordinary warnings (apparitions, etc.) not only have become progressively more urgent and more dire but point with ever greater emphasis to the rottenness within the leadership of the Church, from ordinary priests and religious right up to those at the top of the Church's hierarchy. In fact, according to Zavala, this is precisely the reason that the second part of the "Third Secret of Fatima," which the visionary Lucia was instructed by Our Lady not to reveal before 1960, has apparently never been truly disclosed to the public. Why? Because it warns of a Pope who serves not God but Satan.

A Paradigm Shift

I haven't yet finished the book, so I don't want to say any more about Zavala's ideas regarding the Third Secret of Fatima or the state of the Church. My primary reason for mentioning it today is that it has helped me complete a paradigm shift in the way I view history, a change of perspective that has been transpiring in my mind slowly for decades: to see history as a Story already written, by the best Storyteller there could ever be.

There is real comfort in viewing history this way, because it alleviates the cognitive dissonance that arises from the the conflict between the myth of progress that we all grew up with and the continuing and increasing horrors of the modern world. Those who insist on clinging to the lie that "every day in every way we are getting better and better" must blind themselves to much of what is going on in the world and dismiss warnings as "whack-a-doodle conspiracy theory." For them, "Progress" is an abstract and inexorable force that must not be opposed, one that operates without their conscious participation, although they are often eager to signal their endorsement of this mythical progress with bumper stickers and Tweets that endorse "progressive" causes.

On the other hand, those of us who recognize that we are minor characters in a Story as old as time can content ourselves with fulfilling our assigned roles well. As minor characters, we can't control the plot, but when we act out the parts assigned to us by the Divine Author, we contribute to the perfection of the story.

Apocalypse Now?

I was born into a generation that expected the apocalypse at any moment -- a nuclear apocalypse of man's own making, not one presided over by God and his angels. In my adolescence, as the world continued on the brink of self-destruction, I obsessively read books about a world destroyed by nuclear weapons, books such as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach. This fear of mankind's self-annihilation jostled uneasily with the "George Jetson" view of the future, which imagines technology making all our lives a breeze (although without noticeably improving upon human nature).

When the threat of nuclear war finally receded in the 1980s and early '90s, particularly after the Soviet Union dissolved back into its component parts, I began to realize that, although there had been many technological advances in my lifetime, none of them seemed to be making the world a better place. In fact, a lot of new technology seemed to open the way for new horrors. Books such as Brave New World and Ira Levin's This Perfect Day underscored my sense that advanced technology and our growing reliance on it would prove to be more of a curse than a blessing. When I heard others proclaim that "life today is better than it has ever been," I realized that they viewed the world from a very different perspective than my own, one grounded in materialistic assumptions that measure life in economic, not moral, terms. Such people seemed enthralled by the modern myth of progress, which I could not help but view as a hollow lie. Every day in every way, we were not getting "better and better." In fact, from a moral perspective, things seemed to be getting much worse.

Not until I began graduate studies at the University of Dallas did I begin to discern an alternative way of thinking about where the world was headed. The graduate program I was in had us reading great works of literature, philosophy, and theology from the long tradition of Western culture, providing me with a coherent framework in which to view the past and (implicitly) the future. Amongst all the many "great books" I studied, I can point to two that particularly helped me make this shift in the way I view history, and my own place in it.

The first is <a href="; target="_blank">something I've mentioned before, Hannah Arendt's essay, <a href="; target="_blank">"The Concept of History, Ancient and Modern," which compares pagan, Christian, and modern (secular) views of history. Until I read that, I don't think I had ever thought of history as anything more than "one damned thing after another." As a Catholic Christian, I understood that God had intervened in history time and again, but I still had the sense that He was pretty much leaving us up to our own devices until He finally decided it was time to wrap things up and call it quits.

The second work that changed my way of thinking was John Milton's epic poem, Paradise Lost, particularly Bks. XI and XII. At the end of the poem, after Adam and Eve have sinned and and are about to be ejected from Paradise, God instructs the archangel Michael to give Adam some encouragement by letting him see that, although Adam and Eve have condemned themselves and all their progeny in perpetuity to an existence full of sorrow and toil, God would use their disobedience to bring an even greater good out of it all, by sending his Divine Son to redeem all mankind. That act would not put an instantaneous end to either the human story or human suffering, but mankind's suffering need no longer be meaningless. Christians would be able to serve God's good plan by suffering for and with Christ. Adam, consoled and encouraged by this revelation, responds by vowing to spend the rest of his life obedient to God so that, in some small way, he too can bring some good out of the evil that he has done.

I can't say how close our times are to the end of human history, although there are plenty of signs that support the view that "the End is nigh," but I do know that we would all do well to adopt the view of Milton's Adam. If we trust the Divine Author of the human story, we should focus on playing our part to the best of our ability, doing God's will here and now so that, amongst the many inevitable evils of the world, we can do some good and set a good example for others, trusting that God will bring the story to a fitting close at the time and in the way that best accord with both His justice and His mercy.
2021/02/the-story-god-is-telling-at-present-time.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-244060080311485037.post-3296778589320054569Mon, 13 Jul 2020 19:46:00 +00002021-02-07T14:21:57.329-06:00academiabenefits of readingCatholiccultural criticismcultural marxismculture warsMarxismPoetic Knowledgepoetic truthWestern cultural traditionBooks Can Save Our Dying Culture
On Renewing “A Catholic Reader”

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="659" data-original-width="1200" height="344" src="; width="625" />

I’VE BEEN WANTING to get back to writing on this blog for some time now, after several years of neglect. When I started it, ten years ago, I was recovering from a severe case of burnout, so I wrote mostly to give my frazzled brain something to do. I had spent the past ten years or so teaching in college classrooms, so a bit of that showed up in my blog posts, but mostly I was trying to express what interested me about the books I read and just putting that out there to see if it interested anyone else.

I originally called this blog “A Catholic Reader” because that describes my reading tastes—“catholic” with a small “c”—and because it also describes my perspective as a reader, “Catholic” with a capital “c”, a worldview that permeates my understanding of, well, everything. Now that I want to get back to blogging about books and reading, a part of me still wants to teach others, about how to read and why to read and how to get the greatest pleasure and benefit out of what we read. But I also want to “show” more than “tell”—something I’ve learned from becoming a writer and editor of stories, as well as a reader.

So I think what I’m going to do is, rather than creating an explicit agenda for myself, is write about the books I’m reading now, as I read (or re-read) and digest them. These won’t be book reports or reviews, just personal reflections that include things I’ve learned from a lifetime of reading as well as many years dedicated to studying and teaching literature and writing. These accounts of my reading are intended to be more descriptive than prescriptive—I don’t expect my readers to share my tastes, but I hope what I have to say about my own reading will encourage readers to broaden and deepen their own tastes and reading practice.

Creating a Literary Counter-Culture

One of the reasons I think it’s time to return to this blog is that the world is going mad and things are falling apart. Our culture is falling apart, partly because we no longer know how to read with appreciation and understanding. I firmly believe that those best equipped to rebuild our culture are will be those who are still deeply rooted in what has been handed down to us, what has borne the test of time and taught us things that can help us build the future. And much of that is preserved in books, even when it has faded from human memory.

So, many of the books I discuss (but by no means all) will be old ones. Unfortunately, anything old seems to be out of favor these days, whereas old books used to be the chief focus of literary attention. In my lifetime, the teaching of literature has undergone a disastrous revolution, as Marxist ideology has permeated first graduate schools, then undergraduate education, and finally ordinary schooling. “Woke” culture wants to impose this ideological orientation on the world, to tell us what to think and to deny us the tools to actually learn to think for ourselves. Everything has been politicized and virtually every part of the past is being erased, after being thoroughly picked to pieces.

Well, I’m not going to do that. I believe that literature—especially literature that endures, that continues to attract readers over many decades or even centuries or millennia—conveys something that is innately human, something that can speak to readers far separated in time, space, and culture from its writers. It can be, as I’ve discussed in earlier posts, “philosophical” in the best sense of that word—but it does so by being “poetical,” i.e., by creating an analogy between its fictional characters and its present readers. (See <a href=" blog post from 2012 about how literature engages the imagination to help us grasp universal truths.)

This is something that identity politics, “woke culture,” and narrow ideologies deny and fear. They don’t want us to see ourselves in literary heroes of the past or to feel any sympathy for historical figures who have traditionally been held up as examples. We are meant to think of ourselves as victims or oppressors, to think of the past as hopelessly ignorant and ourselves as wonderfully progressive and superior. One of the first things this strategy of cultural destruction attacked was the teaching of literature. Why? Because reading the literature of the past requires adopting a kind of openness to difference that the ideologues only pretend to value; it requires a humility that allows us to recognize that, when it comes to personal struggles and temptations, we are really no better than our forebears.

Delightful Truths from Great Stories

So I hope what I do here will, in some small way, serve to rebuild a culture of reading. I’ll be discussing fiction chiefly, stories that “instruct” by “delighting,” as the Roman poet Horace once described the function of narrative poetry (dead white guy—no apologies). Believe it or not, even modern novels do (or can do) this, but they succeed only when the “instruction” is well-hidden in the delight that they provide the reader. Every good story shows us something that is true even if fictitious—truths that no fact-checker can affirm or deny. My task here will be to reflect on the truths that I find in these stories and perhaps also to muse on the way delightful and artful way those truths are conveyed.

If you’d like to follow along, be sure to subscribe to this blog. And please feel free to leave comments, suggestions, and encouragement!
2020/07/books-can-save-our-dying-culture.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-244060080311485037.post-1551982027152922907Sun, 03 Nov 2019 16:37:00 +00002021-04-25T16:0

Flights, hotels, local transport, food, activities, and last-minute bookings can put pressure on your savings. If you need additional funds for a planned trip, a loan for travel can be one financing option to consider. With the Fibe loan app, eligible customers can explore personal loan options digitally and manage the application journey from their smartphones. This can be particularly convenient for salaried professionals who want to arrange their finances without spending time visiting a branch. First, Decide How Much Your Vacation Will Actually Cost Before looking for a loan, create a realistic travel budget. Start with the expenses you already know and then keep some room for unexpected costs. Your vacation budget can include: Flight, train, or bus tickets Hotel or accommodation Local transportation Food and beverages Sightseeing and activities Travel insurance Shopping and personal expenses Emergency funds Once you have estimated the total cost, subtract the amount you can comfortably pay from your savings. The remaining requirement can help you determine whether you actually need additional borrowing. Why Consider Fibe for a Travel Loan? Fibe brings convenience to the personal loan journey through its digital-first approach. Eligible borrowers can explore their loan options online, provide the required information, complete applicable verification, and review the available terms digitally. For someone preparing for a vacation, this means the loan application can be managed around existing travel and work commitments. The Fibe loan app can also make it easier to access relevant loan information from your smartphone instead of relying on repeated branch visits. How to Keep Your Travel Loan Affordable Taking a loan for a vacation means your holiday expenses will continue into your future monthly budgets. That’s why repayment planning should be part of your travel planning. Choose Only the Amount You Need Don’t borrow extra simply because a higher amount is available. Calculate the actual funding gap and consider whether the expense is essential. Compare the EMI with Your Monthly Budget Your EMI should fit comfortably alongside rent, household expenses, existing EMIs, savings, and other regular commitments. Consider the Total Repayment A lower EMI may look attractive, but extending the tenure can increase the overall interest payable. Compare different repayment periods before accepting an offer. Keep an Emergency Buffer Avoid spending every rupee of your savings on the vacation. Keeping some emergency money aside can help you handle unexpected expenses during or after the trip. Is a Fast Cash Loan App Right for Your Vacation? Looking for a fast cash loan app can be a practical option when you need funds for travel or another urgent expense. If you are planning to use a loan app, take some time to verify the lender, understand the applicable charges, review the terms and conditions, and check the repayment schedule before applying. Avoid loan apps that promise guaranteed approval or ask for unnecessary sensitive information. Choosing a recognised digital lending platform and understanding the overall cost of borrowing can help you make a more informed financial decision. Why 10,000 Amazon Searches Can Beat 20,000 /why-10000-amazon-searches-can-beat-20000/ Tue, 18 Aug 2026 09:08:30 +0000 /?p=1571 TL;DR A keyword at 10,000 searches growing 20% month over month is usually a better target than one at 20,000 standing still. The same term reads differently over a 30-day window than a 12-month average. Tools rarely say which you are looking at.5,000 searches is huge in Germany and tiny in the US. Volume without a market attached is not a number.Ten keywords at 500 volume you can win beats one at 5,000 you cannot. Short version: volume is a size reading. Size is the least decision-relevant thing about a keyword. Six hundred people a month search the phrase “amazon search volume,” which tells you the metric matters to sellers and nothing about how they should use it. That is a fair illustration of the problem with the metric itself. Search volume is the first number every keyword tool shows and the one most likely to be read as a verdict. It is not a verdict. It is one of four readings, and taken alone it reliably points at the terms hardest to win. What the Number Is Actually Measuring Volume estimates how many times a phrase was searched in a marketplace over a period. Three things about that sentence do more work than they appear to. It is an estimate. No third-party tool has Amazon’s query logs. Every figure is modeled, and models carry error bars that the interface almost never shows. A stated volume figure is a modeled output, not a measurement, and the good tools say so. It counts searches, not searchers. One person checking a term nine times over a week contributes nine. It is bounded by a window. Which brings us to the reading most often got wrong. Window: The Same Keyword, Two Different Numbers A 30-day window and a 12-month average describe the same keyword and produce different figures, sometimes by multiples. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions. The 30-day window answers “what is happening now,” which is the right question for inventory and bid decisions. The 12-month average answers “what is normally true,” which is the right question for whether to launch a product at all. Sellers get burned when they read a 30-day figure taken during a seasonal peak as though it were the annual norm, order stock against it, and discover in February that the peak was the number. The reverse error is quieter and just as expensive: reading a 12-month average during a rising trend and under-ordering. A useful discipline is to look at both and note the gap. A term whose 30-day figure sits well above its 12-month average is either seasonal or growing, and those need opposite responses. The smaller term overtakes the larger one inside a year, and costs far less to rank for while it does. ReadingQuestion it answersDecision it should drive30-day windowWhat is demand doing right nowBids, restock timing12-month averageWhat is normally trueWhether to enter the categoryDirection of travelIs it rising or decayingWhether to build around itRelative rank in marketIs this figure big for this countryWhether the number means anything Direction Beats Size This is the reading that changes decisions most and appears in tools least. A keyword pulling 10,000 searches a month and growing 20% month over month is generally a better target than one pulling 20,000 and flat. The smaller term is on its way to being the larger one, competition for it has not yet arrived, and the cost of ranking today is a fraction of what it will be after it doubles. Seasonality is the same reading on a longer axis. The question is not whether a term peaks but how early it starts to move. If volume begins rising two months before the peak, that is your inventory lead time telling you when to order, and it is visible in the data long before it is visible in sales. Volume Without a Market Is Not a Number Five thousand searches in Germany is a large term. Five thousand in the US is a rounding error. The figure is identical and the conclusion inverts. The same applies within a single market across categories. Fifty thousand searches is good in Electronics. A thousand can be excellent in industrial and scientific tools, where the buyers are few and the order values are not. Any volume figure read without knowing the size of the pond it came from is a decoration. This is where a keyword tool earns its cost, because the useful output is not the raw figure but the figure in context. A good read on Amazon search volume pairs the number with what surrounds it: how the term’s traffic distributes across the listings already ranking, whether the leaders are entrenched, and whether the number is moving. The Winnability Discount The last reading is the one that turns volume into strategy. A keyword might show 50,000 searches while the top ten results all carry 20,000-plus reviews. That is not an opportunity, it is a wall with a number painted on it. The volume is real and entirely unavailable to you. The arithmetic that follows is straightforward and widely ignored. If you can dominate ten keywords at 500 searches each, you have 5,000 searches of genuinely addressable demand. If you fail to crack the top twenty on one keyword at 5,000, you have none. The second option looks better in a spreadsheet and pays nothing. A workable scoring model is three axes out of five: demand, relevance, and ability to win. A term scoring 5, 5 and 2 totals 12 out of 15 and should be treated with suspicion, because the axis it fails is the one that determines whether the other two ever apply. One last caution about the figures themselves. Because every volume number is modeled rather than measured, precision claims made for them deserve scrutiny. The FTC’s advertising and marketing guidance is direct that claims must be truthful and evidence-based and that companies have to be able to support them, which applies to a tool vendor’s accuracy claims as much as to a product listing. Treat a volume figure quoted to the nearest unit as a presentation choice, not a measurement. Building the List A practical target list runs 50 to 100 keywords in three tiers: one primary term above 10,000, roughly five support terms between 2,000 and 5,000, and ten or more long-tails under 1,000. Note the shape. The long-tails outnumber everything else, and collectively they usually deliver more addressable demand than the primary term does, at a fraction of the cost to rank. The primary term is there to be aimed at over years, not won in a quarter. When a whole category appears to move at once, check it against something outside your own account before reacting. The Census Bureau’s Monthly Retail Trade Survey publishes the equivalent reading at the whole-economy level, which is a cheap way to tell a genuine seasonal swing from an artifact of your own listings going in or out of stock. Pull your current listing’s top five terms and write the 30-day and 12-month figures side by side. Where the two diverge sharply, you have either a seasonal term you are treating as evergreen or a growing one you are underinvesting in. Both are worth an afternoon. How to Start Investing in Mutual Funds After Opening Your Demat Account /how-to-start-investing-in-mutual-funds-after-opening-your-demat-account/ Mon, 17 Aug 2026 11:29:06 +0000 /?p=1568 The account is finally active. KYC is done, the welcome email has arrived, and there’s a slightly odd moment of not quite knowing what to actually do next. This gap between finishing the paperwork and making a first real investment trips up more beginners than any actual financial concept does. Day One: What To Do The Moment The Account Goes Live Avoid clicking into the first fund that appears interesting right soon after activation. Spend a few minutes checking in, investigating the UI, and figuring out where the returns calculator, fund research, and historical performance are located within the application. Getting comfortable with the layout on day one saves real confusion later when an actual decision needs making under slight time pressure. Week One: Picking A First Fund To Actually Invest In Mutual Funds By the end of the first week, most people are ready to invest in mutual funds for the first time. This starts with a basic decision: lumpsum or SIP. A lumpsum works well for someone with a set amount ready to deploy immediately, while an SIP suits someone who’d rather commit a smaller, regular amount every month instead. Neither choice is permanent, and plenty of investors eventually use both once they’re more comfortable navigating the process. Comparing Lumpsum And SIP For A First Investment Approach How It Works Best Suited For Lumpsum One larger transaction at current NAV Investors with a ready sum and market conviction SIP Fixed smaller amount deducted at regular intervals Beginners wanting to build a steady habit Combination Lumpsum for an initial base, SIP for ongoing additions Investors wanting both a starting point and consistency Common First-Timer Questions Right After Getting Started A few questions come up constantly once someone finishes setting up their account. How much should a first investment actually be? Most platforms allow starting with amounts as low as a few hundred rupees, so the answer is usually smaller than people expect. Does setting up an account automatically grant access to mutual funds too? Generally yes, since most modern platforms including HDFC Sky bundle stock and fund investing under the same login rather than treating them as separate products entirely. Month One: Building A Habit, Not Just Completing A Transaction A single purchase, however well researched, isn’t really the goal. By the end of the first month, the aim should be a repeatable habit, whether that’s a monthly SIP date circled on a calendar or a quarterly review of how a fund is actually performing relative to its stated benchmark. Investors who treat that first transaction as the beginning of a routine, rather than a one-off task to check off right after demat account opening, tend to build meaningfully larger portfolios over the following years. What To Track Once Money Is Actually Invested Once the first investment is live, a few things deserve regular attention: the fund’s NAV movement, whether SIP instalments are actually going through on schedule, and how the expense ratio compares to similar funds in the same category. None of this needs daily monitoring, but a monthly glance keeps small issues from turning into bigger surprises later, well beyond whatever setup happened during demat account opening itself. Mistakes Worth Avoiding Early On New investors commonly make a handful of avoidable mistakes right after getting started. Chasing last year’s best performing fund without checking whether that performance is likely to repeat is a common one. Ignoring the expense ratio entirely, assuming it barely matters, is another, even though it quietly compounds over a longer holding period. Redeeming units at the first sign of a market dip, rather than sticking with a chosen time horizon, tends to undo whatever benefit a disciplined approach was meant to provide in the first place. Bringing It All Together Completing demat account opening is just the starting line, not the finish. Getting comfortable with the platform, choosing between lumpsum and SIP, and deciding to invest in mutual funds with a clear first step all matter more than waiting for the perfect fund or the perfect moment. The habit built in that first month tends to matter far more, over time, than any single early decision. A Simple Guide To Understanding Daily Silver Prices /a-simple-guide-to-understanding-daily-silver-prices/ Sat, 08 Aug 2026 06:45:38 +0000 /a-simple-guide-to-understanding-daily-silver-prices/ Households across the country preparing for an upcoming festival or family occasion often check the Silver Rate Today before finalising their shopping list, and for residents of the capital in particular, following the Silver Rate Today in Delhi has become a practical first step before visiting any bullion dealer or jeweller. Silver’s affordability compared to gold makes it an accessible choice for a wide range of buyers, from those purchasing a small gift to families investing in coins or utensils as part of a longer-term saving habit. The Journey From Global Markets to Local Dealers The price a buyer sees at a local shop is the result of a fairly layered process. It starts with continuous trading on international commodity exchanges, where silver’s dollar-denominated price responds to a combination of industrial demand, currency strength, and investor behaviour during periods of economic uncertainty. This international rate is then converted into rupees based on the day’s exchange rate, after which import duty and other applicable costs are added to determine the landed price of silver entering the domestic market. City-level bullion associations calculate a daily rate using this landed cost along with local wholesale conditions, and retail dealers generally price their silver products in line with this published figure. Understanding Silver’s Unique Market Position What sets silver apart from most other precious metals is its traditional role in jewellery and gifts as well as its heavy reliance on commercial use. A large part of the global demand for silver comes from areas such as electronics manufacturing, solar energy and many trade policies. When traded play options occur worldwide; calls on silver typically rise alongside it, occasionally triggering sharper interest rate action than typically seen in the gold market during comparable periods. Popular Ways Silver Is Purchased Silver is bought in several different forms depending on the buyer’s intent. Coins and bars are a common choice among those who want to invest in the metal without paying significant making charges, since their price is closer to the base metal rate with minimal craftsmanship cost added. Traditional silverware, including plates, bowls, and decorative pieces, remains a popular choice for religious ceremonies and festive gifting, as silver is considered auspicious in many Indian households. Silver jewellery, ranging from simple anklets to more elaborate designs, also continues to attract steady demand, particularly among buyers who want an affordable alternative to gold for everyday wear. What Causes Silver Prices to Fluctuate Several forces work together to move silver prices on any given day. Changes in global industrial output and manufacturing trends often have a direct impact on demand, given how widely the metal is used across various sectors. The strength or weakness of the rupee against the dollar also plays a meaningful role, since silver is priced internationally before being converted for local sale. Domestic demand tied to festivals and wedding-related purchases adds a further layer of movement, with buying activity typically rising during specific periods of the year and sometimes prompting dealers to adjust their pricing slightly during these busier stretches. Tips for Buying Silver Wisely Before making a purchase, it helps to compare and check fees between a handful of reputable dealers, as these costs can vary quite a bit even when the underlying silver price is the same on the market. Checking to see if the seller provides any purity certification is also a practical precaution, especially for large purchases with silver bullion units or investment-grade bars. Closing Perspective for Silver Buyers Silver remains an important part of everyday life and tradition across Indian households, valued for its affordability, cultural significance, and dual role as both a precious and industrial metal. Buyers who take the time to understand how its price is determined, along with the practical differences between various forms of silver available in the market, are consistently better equipped to make purchases that offer genuine value. Key Points Households in India often check the Silver Rate Today as a practical step before shopping for festivals or family occasions. The price of silver in local markets is influenced by international commodity trading, currency strength, and added import costs. Whether employees access cloud platforms, customers log into online services, or administrators manage enterprise systems, organizations must verify users before granting access. As digital ecosystems continue to expand, protecting identities has become one of the most important aspects of cybersecurity. This growing focus on Identity and Access Management is helping organizations build secure environments while supporting productivity and business growth. Identity security is no longer limited to IT departments. It now influences operational resilience, customer trust, regulatory compliance, and long-term digital transformation. Organizations that invest in strong identity governance are better positioned to reduce cyber risks while maintaining seamless user experiences. Managing Access Across Expanding Ecosystems Modern enterprises operate across multiple cloud services, remote work environments, mobile devices, and third-party platforms. Managing access manually across these environments quickly becomes difficult and increases the likelihood of security gaps. Identity governance centralizes user authentication and authorization, ensuring every individual receives appropriate access based on responsibilities. This structured approach minimizes unnecessary privileges while simplifying administration across complex infrastructures. As organizations continue adopting new technologies, centralized identity management becomes increasingly valuable for maintaining both efficiency and security. Reducing Risks From Stolen Credentials Credential theft remains one of the most common methods used by cybercriminals. Phishing campaigns, password reuse, malware, and social engineering attacks frequently target user credentials because they often provide direct access to valuable systems. Modern identity security solutions reduce this risk through layered authentication, continuous monitoring, and intelligent verification. Even if login credentials become compromised, additional authentication requirements significantly reduce the chances of unauthorized access. Protecting identities at multiple stages creates stronger security than relying solely on usernames and passwords. Building Smarter Authentication Processes Authentication technologies have evolved considerably over the past decade. Traditional passwords are increasingly being replaced or strengthened through biometric verification, authentication applications, hardware security keys, and behavioral analysis. Modern authentication systems adapt according to context. Routine logins from trusted devices may require minimal verification, while unusual login attempts automatically trigger additional authentication steps. Insights shared by Identity and Access Management (IAM) speakers continue to demonstrate how adaptive authentication improves both security and user experience across modern enterprises. This adaptive security model strengthens protection while allowing legitimate users to work efficiently without unnecessary interruptions. Strengthening Privileged Account Protection Not every user requires the same level of system access. Administrative accounts often possess elevated privileges capable of modifying systems, accessing confidential information, or managing security settings. Protecting these privileged identities requires additional safeguards. Organizations increasingly implement stricter authentication requirements, session monitoring, approval workflows, and detailed activity logging for high-privilege accounts. Limiting privileged access reduces opportunities for attackers while improving accountability across critical business operations. Supporting Secure Remote Work Environments Remote and hybrid work models have permanently changed how organizations manage cybersecurity. Employees now connect from homes, shared workspaces, airports, and international locations using various devices and networks. Identity-centered security allows organizations to verify users regardless of location. Instead of trusting network boundaries alone, access decisions consider user identity, device status, login behavior, and associated risks. This flexible approach enables secure remote access while maintaining strong protection across distributed workforces. Identity Governance Improves Compliance Regulatory compliance increasingly requires organizations to demonstrate control over user identities and access permissions. Industries handling financial records, healthcare information, government services, and customer data must prove that only authorized individuals access sensitive resources. Identity governance simplifies compliance by providing centralized visibility into permissions, authentication records, and access history. Automated reporting, periodic access reviews, and policy enforcement help organizations meet regulatory expectations while reducing administrative workload. Artificial Intelligence Enhances Identity Security Artificial intelligence is transforming identity protection by making authentication systems more intelligent and responsive. Instead of evaluating only passwords, AI continuously analyzes user behavior, login patterns, device characteristics, network activity, and historical usage. These insights allow systems to identify suspicious activity much earlier than traditional security methods. Adaptive authentication powered by AI helps organizations respond immediately when unusual behavior is detected, reducing both response times and security risks. Industry Collaboration Drives Innovation Identity security continues evolving as cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated. Collaboration between technology providers, researchers, policymakers, and enterprise leaders plays an essential role in accelerating innovation. Knowledge sharing allows organizations to evaluate new authentication methods, governance frameworks, and access control technologies before implementing them within their own environments. Insights shared by Identity and Access Management (IAM) speakers often provide valuable perspectives on emerging risks, evolving compliance requirements, and practical implementation strategies. Their expertise helps organizations understand both current challenges and future developments in identity security. Preparing For The Future Of Identity The future of cybersecurity will depend heavily on identity-centered protection. Passwordless authentication, decentralized digital identities, behavioral biometrics, continuous verification, and AI-driven decision-making are expected to become standard components of enterprise security strategies. Organizations investing in these capabilities today will be better prepared for tomorrow’s digital environments. Identity security will continue shifting from simple authentication toward continuous trust verification that protects users throughout every interaction. Building flexible identity frameworks today creates a strong foundation for future innovation while supporting long-term resilience. Creating Long Term Digital Trust Digital trust is built through consistent protection of users, systems, and information. Strong identity governance enables organizations to maintain secure digital experiences without creating unnecessary complexity. Employees gain reliable access to the tools they need, customers enjoy safer online interactions, and organizations strengthen confidence across their digital operations. When identity management becomes an integral part of business strategy rather than an isolated security function, organizations create stronger operational resilience and improve their ability to adapt to changing cybersecurity challenges. Conclusion Identity protection has become one of the defining elements of modern cybersecurity. As organizations expand digital operations, stronger authentication, intelligent governance, adaptive access controls, and continuous verification are becoming essential for protecting both users and business assets. At a business intelligence conference, industry professionals come together to discuss how actionable insights improve efficiency across various business processes. This blog examines proven methods for boosting operational efficiency using strategic business intelligence practices and related technologies. Insights from leading industry events, including machine learning summits and data analytics summits, showcase real-world applications and innovative approaches that drive smarter, data-informed decision-making. What is Business Intelligence and Why Operational Efficiency Matters Business intelligence refers to the tools, technologies, and practices used to collect, integrate, analyze, and present business information. The primary goal is to provide actionable insights that help businesses make faster, better decisions. Operational efficiency involves achieving optimal productivity with minimal wasted resources, time, and costs. When these two disciplines intersect, organizations unlock a stronger ability to achieve strategic goals through data-driven operations. The Role of Data Collection and Integration A foundational method to enhance operational efficiency with business intelligence begins with accurate data collection and integration. Fragmented data sets or siloed systems impede insights and consistency. Integrating data from different sources, such as sales platforms, customer support tools, and supply chain databases, creates a unified information repository. When organizations implement robust data integration practices, the reliability of dashboards and reports increases, enabling real‑time evaluation of key performance indicators (KPIs). At an enterprise intelligence conference, data architects often present case studies showing how unified data ecosystems eliminate redundancies and reduce manual data reconciliation efforts, saving time and reducing errors. Turning Data into Meaningful Insights Once data is integrated and accurate, advanced analytical methods are applied to extract meaningful patterns. This translation from raw data to insights is central to business intelligence. Organizations use analytical workflows from descriptive analytics to predictive forecasting to anticipate outcomes rather than merely react to them. For example, predictive modeling can forecast production delays or identify products likely to exceed budget constraints. These forecasts allow teams to proactively adjust operations before bottlenecks occur. In sessions on AI integration at global machine learning summits, experts share models that help streamline forecasting in inventory management and workforce allocation, proving how predictive insights directly support operational efficiency. Improving Decision‑Making with Interactive Dashboards Interactive dashboards are core tools in the business intelligence toolkit. These interfaces present data visually through charts, heat maps, and trend lines, making complex data patterns easier to digest. By empowering stakeholders with easily accessible dashboards, decision‑making becomes faster and more informed. Operational teams use BI dashboards to monitor daily performance metrics and adjust processes promptly. For instance, logistics teams might instantly see delays in delivery times and respond with schedule changes. Key executives can monitor quarterly efficiency targets without relying on manual reports. This democratization of insights drives alignment across an organization. A business intelligence conference often features sessions on best practices in dashboard design, emphasizing clarity and relevance to specific operational goals. Leveraging Machine Learning for Smarter Operations Machine learning bridges the gap between traditional business intelligence and advanced data science. In a machine learning conference, practitioners discuss how algorithms can identify hidden patterns and optimize decision frameworks. These capabilities are especially valuable for repetitive or high‑volume decisions where human judgment alone may be insufficient. Machine learning models can automate routine tasks such as anomaly detection in financial transactions, predictive maintenance scheduling in manufacturing, or demand forecasting in retail operations. Automating such workflows reduces manual intervention, cuts decision latency, and frees up personnel for strategic work. When machine learning is integrated with BI platforms, organizations achieve end‑to‑end analytical capabilities that significantly elevate operational performance. Standardizing Data Governance and Quality Controls Efficient operations hinge on trusted data. A common challenge in business intelligence adoption is inconsistent data quality and governance practices. Without standardized rules on data definitions, access, and quality checks, insights can be unreliable and misleading. Implementing data governance frameworks enhances confidence
