The documentary tells the story of Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame inductee George Clinton, his crew and their home base in Hogtown during the early 70s just before they hit big by mid-decade.

Clinton had already been in the music business for 15 years before the winds of change blew him to Toronto, where he and several band mates would reside for nearly three years. He'd already survived band break-ups, hardscrabble times writing for Motown and a titanic consumption of LSD, Toronto offered a change of scene and new possibilities for Funkadelic.

Creativity blossomed. While in Toronto, Clinton and company stretched out stylistically and joined with local musicians to create the double album America Eats Its Young in 1972 as well as the bed tracks for many other records in subsequent years. Then circumstances shifted again and a recharged Funkadelic left town to pursue their convoluted journey to stardom.

Funk Getting Ready To Roll features interviews with:

George Clinton, ringmaster of funk
Bernie Worrell, keyboard genius
Frankie Kash Waddy, drummer, ex-JB's to boot...
Cordell Boogie Mosson, bassist/guitarist, still with P Funk
Chris Tannis, former road manager/booking agent
Prakash John, ace Toronto bassist (Lou Reed, Alice Cooper)
Rob Bowman, York University professor of all things soulful

They reflect on the state of the band at the time, their personal lives and their memories of living and working in Toronto and Canada.

The documentary is hosted and produced by David Dacks.
2012/07/funk-getting-ready-to-roll-funkadelic.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Dacks)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20537146.post-7027955321698541318Fri, 06 Jan 2012 06:39:00 +00002012-01-06T01:39:22.950-05:00playlistAbstract Index Playlist - January 5/12
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />
The view from the window of CIUT onto back campus.

na na na hey hey - wayne mcghie & the sounds of joy
new bell - manu dibango
get together - tony allen
revolt/la libertad logica - eddie palmieri
rubber gloves - ornette coleman
black unstoppable - nicole mitchell
mra - chris mcgregor's brotherhood of breath
porque hoje e domingo - antonio adolfo & brazuca
feelings - plug
dub voyage - twilight circus
move on - heptones
mellow mood - bunny wailer
m16 - sammy dread
dance hall style - sugar minott
landscape - the mohawks
can i get some help - james brown
turned on to you - eighties ladies
don't change your love - five stairsteps
cool strut - bernie hayes
listen - al green
funky chicken - willie henderson & the soul explosions
umbabaraumba - jorge ben
el lobo - wganda kenya
love break (ooh i love it) - salsoul orchestra
sport - lightnin' rod
aguanile bonko - irakere
like a ship - pastor t.l. barrett and the youth for christ choir
abidjan - ray barretto
dancing time - the funkees
ho na nae - wild magnolias
dub fi gwaan - king tubby & jackie mittoo

This is the final edition of the Abstract Index on CIUT. This is a full time position. Upon reviewing my freelance and volunteer activities I have decided that I can no longer commit 6-10 hours a week to producing and hosting the Abstract Index.

It's not only the time commitment. After having celebrated 10 years of the Abstract Index and 25 years at CIUT this year, I feel it's time to move on and give someone else the opportunity to make magic over the airwaves. I've had a wonderful run but there are moments in everyone's life when you know it's time to move on.

I will continue to do occasional podcasts of the Abstract Index from home. These won't start immediately, nor will they be weekly. But I'll keep the name alive.

In the meantime, I'm throwing a party to celebrate this joyous transition. Please join me and friends at the Henhouse (1532 Dundas St. W.) on Friday January 6, the day after my final broadcast. You can find details on <a href=";, but there's not much more to tell, really - just good times, good tunes and an above average amount of intoxicants. If you're in Toronto, I hope to see you there!

Thanks for all your support over the years - you are the reason CIUT keeps going.2011/12/index-complete-farewell-to-abstract.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Dacks)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20537146.post-138324041483375180Fri, 16 Dec 2011 06:43:00 +00002011-12-18T19:53:19.059-05:00playlistAbstract Index Playlist - December 15/11<div class="separator" style="clear: both; This could be okay with some recalibration of the distance measurements, although for cases of significant interference, e.g. thicker glass tested, the unit would no longer be able to do longer ranges > 1 meter at all. In the end I found <a href="; target="_blank" rel="nofollow">this unit that is very affordable and comes with a nice cover that causes minimal interference.2021/02/vl53l0x-nir-laser-time-of-flight.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-6064894780341442731Wed, 13 Jan 2021 17:44:00 +00002021-01-13T10:09:46.623-08:00diymetricnatureHummingbird nectar recipe by weight (grams)
<a href=" resources say 1:4 sugar to water ratio by volume. This translates to about 1:5 by weight

To be more precise: 0.25 cups sugar is 48 g, 1 cup water is 237 g, so the ratio is 1:4.9375 or 0.2025:1 or 16.8% sugar by weight. I didn't have a bucket handy to do his method, but I have a Weber Q1200 small gas grill, so I wondered if it would be possible to rig something up.

I came up with the following method. I have repeated this multiple times and have been very pleased with the results. Definitely interested to hear others' suggestions.

The Weber Q1000/Q1200 are the smallest gas grills Weber makes. For a gas grill, you want wood chips rather than wood chunks to smoke with. I use these:
<a href="; imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="; />

One option I have seen is just to wrap the chips in foil and put the packet directly on the fire. Instead I put the foil in a standard 10 inch Lodge cast iron pan:
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

Cover the pan with foil:
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

Poke holes in the foil:
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

And put the pan on the grill:
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />
This just fits inside the Q1200. I heat this on full gas until it starts smoking. (I've also tried heating it on the stove to get it going while I dress the fish, which works fine if you don't mind getting a little smoke inside the house.)

To prep the fish, just simple salt and pepper and some lemon and shallot slices tucked inside tastes great. I would say the shallot is really key.
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

To cook the fish gently without putting it too close to the heat, I lay it on top of the foil-covered pan. To prevent sticking it helps to oil the foil, or else just put a layer of lemon slices or greens in between the foil and the fish.
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

I then cover the whole thing with more foil to keep the smoke in. Some other cover would be more convenient here, perhaps a large pie tin?
<a href="; imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="; width="320" height="239" />

Cooking time depends a bit. I'm not that interested in slow / cold smoking, so I just leave it at 3/4 gas and close the lid. The built in thermometer says the grill is ~350 F. For whole fish I do this 10-15 minutes each side. You could definitely play with lower heat and longer if you want. Or if you want to get to eating faster you can throw the fish straight on the grill for a minute after smoking is done.

This one didn't turn out so pretty; not enough insulation between fish and foil. But tastes wonderful!
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; style="cursor: move;" width="320" />2016/06/i-recently-watched-jamie-cooks-summer.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-7852262654197423612Sat, 21 May 2016 22:57:00 +00002016-05-21T15:57:02.477-07:00Update 3: DIY Hario conical burr grinder Kitchenaid stand mixer attachmentProbably final update to the <a href="; 3D printed design is <a href=";. (No change to the previous bearing adapter piece design.) You can also order these designs essentially at cost <a href=";. The main changes are there are now 3 set screws in the adapter instead of 2, and the square bit has chamfered corners to help it go into the hub a bit easier.

With the additional set screw, I have been using this piece intermittently for over a year without it wearing out. Please note that I believe this can put stress on the KitchenAid motor if you are trying to do a very fine grind or if you are using harder coffee beans (e.g. light roast).

I've been using this with both my larger and smaller Hario burr grinders. For the small grinder with the pentagonal driver, I found a stainless steel adapter available <a href=";. There are other sellers with similar items; I don't know whose design was first but this seller is amiable.2016/05/update-3-diy-hario-conical-burr-grinder.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-3372827475873767557Tue, 08 Sep 2015 06:41:00 +00002015-09-07T23:46:57.392-07:00Mount Auburn Cemetery Map and Key<a href=" Auburn Cemetery used to distribute this map of the grounds with notable monuments marked. As detailed nicely <a href=";, the process has been much simplified, at least if you're on Raspbian. Note, as I commented there, you'll probably want to add --listen to your LIRC_ARGS in hardware.conf so that you can connect to the LIRC daemon from your home network. This allows you to send IR remote control signals out from the RasPi by connecting from any computer. There's also a nice Android app called Amote, probably there are good ones for iOS as well.

I found that our Samsung BN59-00857A remote worked fine with an <a href=" lircd.conf configuration file for the BN59-00856A. (Actually the 00856 includes a few additional buttons not on the 00857; several of these work for controlling our TV even though they're not on our OEM remote!)

When it came to controlling our GE air conditioner, I didn't find any existing configuration file. The process of getting a working config file together was a little more involved than I expected, so I'm detailing it here and posting the resulting config (also sent it to the LIRC maintainers, but didn't hear anything back).

I knew from running mode2 that raw signals from the AC remote were being received correctly. But I wasn't able to get irrecord to pick up the AC remote signals even when forcing it into raw mode. It turns out that the GE AC remote has an unusually long code length, 48 bits, so maybe that was part of the issue. I'm also not clear on whether my irrecord was going into raw mode correctly; seemed to behave exactly like non-raw mode so maybe there's a problem with the version built for Raspbian?

Anyway, to get a config file, I had to pipe the mode2 raw data to text files and then manually pull the text into a raw conf file and filter out the "pulse" and "space" text (thanks vim). I confirmed that the resulting raw file works for controlling the AC through LIRC. Then I used irrecord -a to retroactively convert the raw codes into a more succinct config file. Looking at the various wall mount ACs GE sells, it seems likely to me that these codes will work for any unit since the controls all look the same. The pieces are available on <a href="; and <a href=";. These pieces were 3D printed by Shapeways in their White, Strong, Flexible material. Screwing the set screws directly into the plastic instead of tapping the holes kept the piece viable for several months before it wore out.

Managed to get a pretty decent locating fit for a 3/8" x 5/8" x 5/32" sealed, pre-lubricated ball bearing from <a href=";. They have a lot of options in this size. I ordered two to choose from, but only one fit into the printed flange piece easily with just my hand pressure even though they were rated for the same maximum OD and tolerance. So I think the current design is close to the edge of hand pressed fitting for the low tolerance of the current SLS 3D printing process.
<img src="; height="288" width="216" border="0" />

If you look carefully at the bottom edge of the flange where it contacts the drill adapter, you can see there is a step-wise pattern; this is because I tried to give the surface that contacts the drill adapter a gentle slope to match the slope on the front surface of the drill adapter. It basically works, but the 3D printing leaves this step pattern instead of a smooth slope. Probably not worth the trouble.

Here's the whole thing assembled. Note that the square driver piece is taking on a healthy coffee color due to the plastic material being porous and absorbing bits of coffee grounds. I've had this piece a while now and it's showing no signs of failing, so I think the 3D printed parts are reasonably successful for medium use. It's also kind of nice to know that the plastic part will fail before you kill the KitchenAid motor if you happen to jam things up some how.
<img src="; height="288" width="216" />

Here's a picture of the extra 5/8" OD bearing I bought that didn't quite fit nicely. I also bought a 9/16" OD needle bearing to try, but it seemed better to stick to something with less depth and the 5/8" OD ball bearing was a small enough OD to work.
<img src="; height="144" width="123" border="0" />2012/07/update-2-diy-hario-conical-burr-grinder.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-8957555705351139733Sun, 20 May 2012 20:23:00 +00002012-07-28T13:46:20.200-07:00Update: DIY Hario conical burr grinder Kitchenaid stand mixer attachmentUpdate 3: More updates to the design, particularly housing for a ball bearing in the flange.

Update 2: It seemed like a <a href="; was actually more appropriate, so I am retiring the Google Group in favor of a <a href=" Wikia page. Please join in!

Update: I created a <a href=" DIY Google Group to try to get together some of the handful of people who have been hacking on this. Also posted a listing of known projects.

Substantial updates to the earlier prototype. Here I've added an adapter flange that holds it in place against the Kitchenaid adapter hub. This was also supposed to house a sleeve bearing but I made the dimensions too tight so that will have to wait for next iteration. Also I found some nice, small, cheap, sealed ball bearings from VXB so will probably design for that instead. The coupling between the square hub and the 3/8" drill shaft is essentially the same as before, only shorter to leave room for the flange.

<img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />

Here's a video of this version in action. Note that now I'm using it to drive the older Hario conical burr grinder model, rather than the Hario Slim. (We have both, one for home and one for my office. Kitchenaid only at home though ;).)

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="; width="420">

One advantage of the older Hario is that the coupling from the drill adapter to the grinder is simpler. The Hario Slim uses a pentagonal (AKA 5-point) drive in a small nonstandard size (~3/16"). I tried a 3D printed adapter for that but I don't think the Shapeways "Strong, Flexible" material is strong enough. I'm trying a lasercut acrylic piece next.

For the older Hario, the situation is much simpler. The drive has a nonstandard shape (cylindrical with flats on two opposite sides) for hand cranking, but it's also threaded as M6-1 so you can just screw something down on top of it. Actually, you can even just clamp the drill adapter directly down on this, as <a href=" did in his original design. I wanted to try something simple and off-the-shelf to avoid clamping directly to the grinder, so I looked for M6-1 coupling nuts that would fit into the 3/8" drill adapter, but unfortunately they are all slightly too large. However, a 1/4-20 coupling nut fits snugly into the adapter (you may have to test a few to find one with clearance) and screws smoothly onto the grinder drive for the first few turns. I don't have any MechE, so can't really tell you the relative benefit of either clamping directly to the drive or screwing an unmatched thread onto it, but as long as I include some washers so that the 1/4-20 is only riding the M6 threads a little way I think this might be a little nicer. An M6@1/4-20 adapter nut or just an M6 with a smaller outer diameter would be ideal but I haven't found such a product.

<img border="0" height="320" src="; width="240" />

The previous hub coupling has already worn out, so it's still not clear whether these 3D printed parts are viable. The first thing to go was the set screw holes; on the failed piece the screws get pushed back through their threads so the coupling no longer grips the 3/8" shaft. But I think the mistake there was to tap the holes and use nylon set screws before switching to steel set screws. On the new piece I just screwed steel set screws through the untapped hole so the fit is tighter and it seems to be holding up better so far. Probably a clamping adapter design would be better, although it would be a tight fit and I'm not sure how well 3D printed plastic would handle that kind of stress.2012/05/update-diy-hario-conical-burr-grinder.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-8683607037610019525Sun, 15 Apr 2012 20:27:00 +00002012-05-20T14:08:47.478-07:00Kitchenaid drill adapterUpdate: this coupler has started to fail. Then recently, jeffkobi posted <a href=" nice Instructable on how to attach a Kyocera manual burr coffee grinder to your Kitchenaid and it rekindled my interest (not least because I own the same model burr grinder).
I really liked jeffkobi's idea of using an inexpensive Milescraft 90 degree drill adapter as the intermediary between the mixer and the grinder. So I've been trying to develop some simple 3D printable pieces to make it easier to couple the drill adapter to the Kitchenaid attachment hub. This is a work in progress and is going to take at least one more iteration to refine, but I'm pretty happy with how it looks so far, so here's some teasers.
<img border="0" src="; /> <img border="0" src="; />2012/04/kitchenaid-drill-adapter.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-7977296854708422096Thu, 15 Mar 2012 19:30:00 +00002012-03-15T12:34:55.245-07:00matlabprogrammingMatlab internals and in-place editingHere's a couple of articles I wrote for the blog <a href=" Matlab:

<a href=" mex in-place editing

<a href=" internal memory representation

If you're interested in how Matlab works behind the scenes and/or how to use this information to write more efficient C/C++ mex code, check it out.2012/03/matlab-internals-and-in-place-editing.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-6207776588878398397Fri, 02 Sep 2011 23:05:00 +00002011-09-17T17:09:27.915-07:00actorsconcurrentmatlabmexprogrammingtheronHOWTO: deploy multithreading on Matlab with the Theron C++ Actors libraryPreamble: What follows is a HOWTO guide for getting Theron-2.09 multithreaded C++ mex files built on Matlab. For my general musings on Matlab concurrency and Theron, see the previous post.
Building multithreaded Matlab mex files with Theron

This was pretty straightforward on the Mac, somewhat tricky but not terrible on Linux. I don't have any working C++ compiler with Matlab on Windows thanks to absolutely abysmal support from Microsoft and Mathworks (essentially Mathworks only supports Microsoft and Microsoft's compilers are impossible to get installed correctly). But the notes below may help you get things working on Windows anyway and I added some Windows specific notes at the very bottom. Before trying to get Theron working, I encourage you to write a simple C++ mex program (maybe a single-threaded version of your planned algorithm) and get it built on Matlab first, to confirm that your system is correctly set up for mex.

I'm fairly confident most Mac users can get this working. On Linux I have only tested on 2010 and 2011 64-bit versions of Matlab, and there are reasons to fear that earlier versions may have more trouble working. Fair warning.

Building Theron on Mac or other static mex environments

For this discussion, the fundamental difference between Mac and Linux versions of Matlab is how they handle mex compilation. When you mex a C++ source file on the Mac (confirmed up to Matlab 7.12), the system generates statically linked output (a statically linked executable I think, but it could be a static library; it doesn't really matter). On Linux, mex generates a shared library instead, which complicates things significantly when your build depends on the boost_thread library (see below).

For now, let's assume you are on a Mac or some other Matlab system that generates static mex files. One way to confirm this is to run mex on something simple with the -v option; this will show the gcc or g++ commands that mex is using. As long as the linking step doesn't include the -shared flag, you're okay.

In this case, your first step is to follow the getting started instructions on the <a href=" site: download Theron and build it, linking against your choice of Boost threads library. If you're not sure whether you have Boost threads installed already, you can try the locate libboost_thread command, possibly after running sudo updatedb if your locate database is out of date. If you don't have Boost threads already, the simplest way to get it is to use Macports. Once you have Macports installed, it's as simple as: sudo port install boost. Currently this gives you a very up-to-date boost version 1.47.

Theron is currently a little Windows-centric, so you'll need to tweak the makefile a little to get it to build. Theron author Ashton Mason tells me the next release should make things smoother for Gnu (non-Windows) people. First, as detailed in the Theron guide, you need to edit the makefile to point to your Boost installation. If you got Boost from Macports, this will probably look like this:

BOOST_INCLUDE_PATH = /opt/local/include/ BOOST_LIB_PATH = /opt/local/lib/ BOOST_RELEASE_LIB = boost_thread-mt BOOST_DEBUG_LIB = boost_thread-mt

If you want to be able to run make clean to start over with the build process, I recommend also changing the following lines:

RM = rm -f ... clean: ${RM} ${BUILD}$/*.o ${RM} ${BUILD}$/*.a ${RM} ${BUILD}$/*.ilk ${RM} ${BIN}$/*.pdb ${RM} ${BIN}$/*.ilk ${RM} ${BIN}$/*.exe ${RM} ${LIB}$/*.a ${RM} ${LIB}$/*.lib

I think that should be it, so go ahead and build. If you are only planning to use Theron from Matlab you only need the library, so I would use make library mode=release.

If all goes well, your build should finish pretty fast and you should now have the libtheron.a library in your THERONPATH/Lib folder. Now boot up Matlab and try to build a simple mex file. A Theron test program might look something like:

// theron_test.cpp #include "mex.h" #define THERON_USE_BOOST_THREADS 1 #include "Theron/Framework.h" void mexFunction(int nlhs, mxArray *plhs[], int nrhs, const mxArray *prhs[]) { Theron::Framework theron; }

This looks simple, but actually the call to initialize the Theron Framework involves a fair amount of background stuff getting setup, so it should give you an indication of whether things are working. To compile this from Matlab, you'll need a little more than a simple mex theron_test.cpp.

Do not put spaces in any of these mex options; no space after the "D". First you need to tell the compiler what Theron function calls look like. You do this by pointing it to the Theron header files with the -I/THERONPATH/Include/ directive.

Next you need to tell mex to pull in the theron and boost_thread libraries. The standard way to do this is with the -L and -l options to the linker, but I find it cleaner to just include the full paths to the library files after your C++ file name; this tells the linker to look through the object files in the libraries when resolving the calls to Theron in your code. I also like using the -v option so I can see exactly what mex is up to.

So your full build command should look something like:

mex -v -I/THERONPATH/Include/ theron_test.cpp /THERONPATH/Lib/libtheron.a /LIBPATH/libboost_thread.so

If you got Boost from Macports, then the libboost part above should be /opt/local/include/libboost_thread-mt.dylib. You could also use libboost_thread-my.a if you want; I don't think it matters much.

Did it build? Hope so... Now try running theron_test from the Matlab command line. You should see nothing; nothing is good. Now go ahead and code up your algorithm using the Theron tutorial as a guide and enjoy simple Matlab concurrency!

Building Theron on Linux or other shared library mex environments

The process is a bit more complicated for Linux users. The upside is, you probably don't have to worry about getting your own Boost implementation (although chances are you already have one...). The issue is that in Linux, Matlab mex files are built as shared libraries instead of statically linked. This causes two problems. The immediate problem is that Matlab needs you to build Theron with the -fPIC option turned on so that it can use the Theron library in a shared build. This is not a big problem; just add -fPIC to the CFLAGS in the Theron makefile.

The second problem is the deal breaker: Matlab uses libboost_thread internally and has its own copy hidden away in its internal distribution folders. Since your mex file got built as a shared library, it will try to pull the boost_thread library in at runtime, and it will find Matlab's version (1_40_0) instead of your external version (1_42_0 currently in apt-get). This causes a segfault.

So there are two approaches to solving this. The better one would be to find some way to tell your mex file not to use Matlab's boost_thread. I found <a href=" discussion of this on MatlabCentral, but did not get this working; it seems like it might require rewriting parts of Theron to use dlopen; not very nice. I still feel like there should be some other way to get Matlab to behave, but I didn't find it. (For completeness: it does not work to point Matlab's internal boost_thread to an updated one; duh why did I even try that?)

So there is option 2: throw in the towel and build Theron against Matlab's internal boost_thread. This works at least for 64-bit Matlab 2010 or 2011, which has boost_thread 1.40.0 internally. I don't know that it will work for earlier or 32-bit versions of Matlab, which I believe use earlier versions. (A very old version of Matlab might not have this issue at all, as I think it was around 2007 that MathWorks started multithreading Matlab internal code in the first place. If you're using a very old Matlab, check the internal distribution folders for libboost_thread to see if it's there. locate should be your friend.)

Building Theron against Matlab's internal boost_thread is not too hard. The only trick is that Matlab doesn't have the header files in the distribution (at least I didn't find them). So you'll have to <a href=" boost_1_40_0 (or whatever version Matlab has internally on your system) and point Theron to those headers. If you use the wrong headers, you'll get segfaults. Theron's makefile should look something like:

BOOST_INCLUDE_PATH = /Downloads/boost_1_40_0/ BOOST_LIB_PATH = /usr/local/MATLAB/R2011a/bin/glnxa64/ BOOST_RELEASE_LIB = boost_thread BOOST_DEBUG_LIB = boost_thread ... CFLAGS += -c -Wall -fPIC

(The libboost_thread in the Matlab folder is only the versioned filename, not the soname, so I would have thought you might need to symlink a soname but that didn't seem to be necessary.)

If this builds correctly, you should be good to build your mex file from Matlab; the command is the same as above for Mac, except you point it to the internal Matlab boost_thread:

mex -v -I/THERONPATH/Include/ theron_test.cpp /THERONPATH/Lib/libtheron.a /MATLABLIBPATH/libboost_thread.so.1.40

Conclusions

This was a little bit of a pain, mostly because of Matlab's questionable decision to use shared libraries internally without (apparently) providing for situations where users build their mex files against the same libraries. The process is especially annoying if you have Mac and Linux machines that both need to be able to build your mex. Some steps would be a little smoother if Theron were less Windows-centric; Theron has a new release coming that should improve on this.

I think the current solution is stable, although it's tricky to be locked into the Matlab internal boost_thread version. The benefit is clear. Using Theron to multithread a simple algorithm, I got about 4.5x speedup using 6 cores, and 6x speedup using 12 threads on 6 cores with hyperthreading. This was a simple algorithm that didn't really require an Actors model, but it was great that I could get this done quickly (once I figured out the Matlab setup tricks) and without having to deal with low-level threads and mutexes at all.

Building Theron on Windows

As noted, I have not gotten any Windows compiler to work with mex, so these are purely hypothetical guidelines. If you are building on Windows you will probably find it simpler to use the Windows thread library instead of Boost. So just leave out the THERON_USE_BOOST_THREADS define and it should revert to using Windows threads instead. This means you should be safe from the internal Matlab shared library conflict problem that Linux has. But you may still need the -fPIC option added to your CFLAGS depending on whether Windows mex is setup to create static or shared libraries (I don't know).
2011/09/preamble-what-follows-is-guide.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-5678648008382962664Fri, 02 Sep 2011 21:15:00 +00002011-09-07T17:07:56.529-07:00actorsconcurrentmatlabmexprogrammingtheronSimple(r) concurrent Matlab programming with Theron
Preamble: What follows are my (long-winded) musings on the current (Sep. 2011) state of concurrent programming in Matlab. For a specific guide to using the Theron C++ library for Actors concurrency in Matlab, see the following post.

Concurrent Matlab

Matlab is a standard programming environment for scientific calculations. In our lab, we use it for a lot of analysis, especially prototyping new analyses. Eventually, some of the performance critical stuff gets ported over to Java, but we still have plenty of things we need to run that are Matlab-only and need to be fast.

As personal computers add more and more cores without improving clock speeds much, there is more and more need for parallelized (AKA concurrent, multithreaded) software. Matlab is not a very popular language for supercomputing, but high-performance clusters also of course demand parallelized software. Matlab has some support for multithreading internally, so depending on which Matlab internal functions you use, you may see significant multicore use on your machine. But there is currently no support for explicitly writing multithreaded programs in vanilla Matlab.

One solution is to start multiple instances of Matlab and use communication abstractions like sockets (also not supported in vanilla Matlab) or the file system to interact between the processes. This is an okay solution for coarsely (AKA embarrassingly) parallel algorithms. Several nicely abstracted solutions exist. Matlab's own <a href=" Computing Toolbox with its parfor construct for example. Free solutions include the <a href=" package from MatlabCentral FileExchange, and <a href=" href="; from MIT. Multicore and pMatlab both use the file system for interprocess communication. (They have somewhat different abstraction models that make them appropriate for somewhat different styles of multithreading.) One upside to using the file system for interprocess multithreading is that it is trivial to use a network file system to make your code not only multiprocess but actually distributed to multiple machines.

But what if you need more finely grained parallelism, for example you want to code algorithms that flexibly break a problem into hundreds of sub-tasks and maximally exploit available hardware concurrency? At present, this seems to require you to either give up on Matlab entirely, or else write lower-level code that links into Matlab. The two methods I'm familiar with for linking lower-level code into Matlab are to write Java, which Matlab communicates with fairly smoothly, or else write C/C++/Fortran and bring it in with Matlab's "mex" functionality.

Java core concurrency is established, but based around low level threads and locks. It's a minefield of synchronization issues. There are libraries available for more abstracted approaches, but I haven't worked with them. And if a contained segment of code is really performance critical, writing it in native C/C++ makes sense.

So what are the capabilities for writing concurrent C++ and linking it into Matlab? Unfortunately current C++ compilers do not have native concurrency support. But this is expected to change in the not-too-distant future. C++11, the new standard, was approved last month with a new thread library based on the threading in the popular Boost distribution. Unfortunately, the C++11 threading standard looks a lot like Java core concurrency, built around low-level threads and mutexes with no support for higher-level, safer, simpler concurrency abstractions. Luckily, there are libraries available offering concurrency abstractions for C++. The one I'd like to highlight today is <a href=".

Theron

Theron is a concurrency library for C++ based on the Actors model, in which most of the low-level thread/mutex concurrency implementation details are hidden from the user. It is not a strict Actors model based tightly on the academic definition of Actors, but it is in that spirit. It offers an Actors abstraction based on a backing thread pool, so that creating new Actors is cheaper than actually creating new threads, allowing you to trivially have hundreds or thousands of Actors in one program. The pool of worker threads services the Actors efficiently, allowing high exploitation of available hardware concurrency. Actors are also defined to communicate only through message passing and not through shared memory, eliminating most of the booby traps that make low level concurrent programming such a pain. (There are ways to pass shared memory between Theron Actors if you really need to, e.g. if you have large input data structures you don't want to copy into messages. It's then up to the user to ensure that the Actors interact with the shared memory in well defined, safe ways. Nevertheless I have found that the Actors abstraction is very helpful for simplifying concurrent code even if some degree of shared memory is slipped in.)

Another nice feature of Theron is that it is designed to allow easy swapping in of different underlying thread models. Currently it has wrappers for native Win32 threading as well as Boost threads. The expectation is that as C++11 std::thread compilers become available, it will be easy to adapt Theron to use the standard threading. Theron also has a very nice website with clear documentation of the simple, powerful API, a clear tutorial, getting started guide, and good user support. Although Theron has historically been somewhat Windows-centric, I was able to download Theron, build it on my work Mac, and get a multithreaded program running in Matlab in about a day. Getting it working in Linux took longer, but I think I have it figured out now too; see next post for details.

Update: libcppa

I recently came across another C++ Actors project, <a href=";. This is much less mature than Theron, and relies on a lot of C++11 features for its core functionality, but it looks interesting. It's hosted on GitHub, so could be easy to dig into despite not a lot of documentation. But Theron is clearly the choice for the time being.
2011/09/simpler-concurrent-matlab-programming.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Peter)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4667089059273258490.post-4006703875187495086Thu, 04 Aug 2011 17:37:00 +00002012-08-31T11:17:09.293-07:00appleprogrammingBroken Mac OS 10.6 (and 10.7 and 10.8 and...) The first signs or symptoms started when I was about 6 years old and my mother was married to the first of 2 step fathers. Their relationship was very violent and my step fathers behaviour with me was sexually highly inappropriate, that's when my nightmares first started and have continued periodically for 60 years.

Although I 'existed' from that time onwards, I never ever felt normal. The symptoms of CPTSD plagued me my whole life, manifesting when triggered severely. Because my condition was undiagnosed no one else knew how much I struggled.

I want to share the extreme torment I went through, alone. At 18 I had a nervous breakdown, attempted suicide by slashing my wrists to the bone and spent time in a psychiatric hospital having shock treatment. (CPTSD went undiagnosed.) I walked out of hospital and had to hide the symptoms as best as I could, never sharing with anyone, least of all my family, the extreme struggles with nightmares, panic attacks and an eating disorder, just in case I was sent to a mental home.

My first marriage was to an extremely abusive man who became the father of my 2 oldest children. I suspect he suffered with CPTSD as well and NPD. We knew nothing of those conditions back then. He was extremely aggressive and had constant nightmares from his experiences during the war in Angola. 6 years into our marriage I was told about the physical and sexual abuse he suffered as a child and I wasn't told by him, but a relative. This explains his alcoholic, controlling, violent, jealous, lack of trust behaviour that destroyed our marriage. Huge triggers for me as this marriage was a carbon copy of my childhood experience with my step father.
Soon after my divorce I attempted suicide again, cutting my wrists again and taking an over dose to help it along. I spent a short time in a psychiatric hospital, but again CPTSD was undiagnosed. I truly believe that from that time onwards my condition was extremely severe and I just wasn't able to function like normal people.

This condition actually caused the breakdown of my second marriage and not the financial problems. I was diagnosed with Petimol Epilepsy and put on medication, which I discovered after 30 years is a mood stabiliser prescribed also for patients with PTSD. I was told I had Petimol Epilepsy, NOT CPTSD.

My third marriage and the most traumatic was to a man diagnosed with NPD. I had no idea what that was and had never heard of the condition. I suspect looking back that he had CPTSD too, the same as my first husband. 14 years of torture.
My own symptoms on a scale of 0 - 10 throughout that marriage were probably a 10. After my divorce they shot up to 20 and remained that way for 10 years. I was completely unable to function and suicide was a daily consideration.

For 63 years I had seen 5 psychiatrists, 2 neurologists, 7 psychologists, read hundreds of books like, Why am I afraid to tell you who I am, The 5 love languages, The Cindarella Complex, Co Dependent No more.... and hundreds more. I have been hospitalised 4 times, attempted suicide 4 times.

I AM SO ANGRY that for 60 years not one single doctor mentioned PTSD let alone CPTSD. Why did they not diagnose my condition?

MY CONDITION WAS CAUSED BY THE NEGLECT, SEXUAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE INFLICTED ON ME BY OTHER PEOPLE, I WAS NOT BORN THIS WAY.

Men and women have suffered and lost their lives from this condition for centuries. Well I won't harp on about that, I am grateful to be alive. I did survive. My life isn't perfect this condition has cost me dearly, but I have 3 beautiful daughters, 4 gorgeous grandchildren, 2 lovely son in laws, a handful of patient, loving understanding friends and 2 family members who have not judged me.

There has to be a GOD because He orchestrated miraculously my introduction to Dr. Annemarie Norvello who treated me for this condition for 3 years, not once a month or twice a month, but every single week. I am alive because I never gave up and neither did she, I left no stone unturned. There was no FACEBOOK GROUP in my journey to heal, but there are many groups today that offer support. Use them.

Not once in 10 years did I suppress my trauma with, denial, drugs, alcohol or new relationships, but if that's what you do, DON'T beat yourself up, this is an incredibly difficult illness to cure. Just take one day at a time, by choosing to do the right thing. Loving yourselves enough to follow through with treatment.

I share my complete story in my book LOOK ME IN THE EYE -Caryl Wyatt and I have shared my healing journey too. I pray sincerely if you are reading this, you won't give up, but that you will believe with the right treatment, you can heal your life too.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1288" data-original-width="1289" height="319" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="627" height="400" src="; width="261" />

Click on the link below

<a href=" ME IN THE EYE - Caryl Wyatt

Footnote: I did'nt win any prizes for being the best mother in the world, but my daughters always knew I absolutely loved and adored them enough to fight for them.

2017/08/cptsd-complex-post-traumatic-disorder.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-55339795308130777Mon, 17 Jul 2017 16:21:00 +00002017-07-17T09:22:55.757-07:00Generational TraumaGenerational TraumaThe idea that we can carry generational trauma is not a great thought for anyone, when does it end. It makes me wonder? The Bible speaks of the sins of the forefathers being cast upon up to the forth generation. The things our parents struggled with become our problem, no one likes that idea, but it's the truth. None of us escape 'doing the work'. The work of owning our own stuff and working through it.
The bible also says, 'work out your own salvation with fear and trembling', that means 'own your stuff' and work through it without blaming anyone. Click on the link to find out more about generational trauma.
<a href=" Family Trauma2017/07/generational-trauma.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-7758970836998483877Mon, 17 Jul 2017 14:26:00 +00002017-07-17T07:58:20.949-07:00TriggersMental illness isn't funny
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="416" data-original-width="600" height="276" src="; width="400" />
What's the difference between a mental illness and a sense of humour? It's too late to ask Robin Williams but I can try and tell you.
As a young child both my brother and I had an incredible sense of humour. I used to laugh at him a lot, though he didn't find me very funny. Throughout my life, if you asked all the people who have known me, they would tell you I have a good sense of humour. The problem is that at times I didn't know what was funny and what was a diversion from my pain. The thing is, neither did anyone else which made it difficult for me to communicate effectively, my struggles with CPTSD.

There have been times in my life that I've done some pretty bazaar things, which others found amusing but in my heart I know came from extreme stress and anxiety and not from a humorous place.

There are two stories that I can remember in particular. A friend of mine was getting married and at her bachelorette she had 2 male strippers. The function was held in my home. After the strippers finished their little act, I went upstairs and dressed up like a stripper, nothing over the top, but very high shoes, teased big hair and heavy make up. Requesting that the male stripper sit in a chair I proceeded to act out a lap dance. Of course all the guests found it very amusing, but one of my daughters did not, she was highly embarrassed.

On another occasion I went to the theatre with my ex husband and some friends. That night I was carrying a very pretty and unusual handbag that I loved. During the interval I went to the bathroom and a lady made an incredible fuss about my bag, saying it was the most exquisite bag she had ever seen. I looked at her grubby bag and asked her go give it to me. I emptied the contents of both bags out on the basin and filled my bag with all her goodies and gave it to her. Putting all my things into her bag I said 'you can have it'. While she stood in absolute shock I turned and walked out of the rest room.

There are so many stories similar to these two. Of course other people wouldn't think much about these two examples, but years later when I started therapy I looked back over my life at all these incidents and I wept, with a broken heart, for my inner child, constantly using humour to mask the pain. Both these incidents and many more happened during my 3rd marriage to a man I absolutely adored, but who tortured my soul daily.

When I was in therapy, I shared these stories with embarrassment, to my therapist. My question to her was why? She had no problem with anything I shared with her, if I was happy with the memories, which I wasn't, but I needed to understand why I had behaved so out of character on so many occasions. It wasn't difficult for her to explain, it was my way of coping with extreme anxiety and in all situations I was hugely triggered.

Most people who don't suffer with PTSD or CPTSD wouldn't understand, what is a trigger, it's different for each victim, but I'm going to try and explain one of my biggest triggers by unravelling one of my worst - crowds of people.

Therapist : what is it about crowds that makes you anxious, what are crowds normally doing.
Me: shopping, watching sport, at a concert, having a party.
Therapist : what are they doing that you find stressful.
Me: they are drinking or if they are shopping they are spending money.
Therapist : why does that upset you?
Me : because the drinking gets more and more out of control, everyone gets drunk, there is going to be an argument which might lead to someone being beaten up. If they are spending money it reminds me of the shopping sprees my husband used to go on where he spent so much money in a short space of time, on anything from a suit to a building. He had the money and never ever discussed with me what he spent it on. It was overwhelming.
Therapist : why was that a problem for you?
Me : because when people drink, the violence and abuse was often directed at me, from my husband, from my ex husband, from my mother and my step fathers.
My 2 abusive husbands earned the money and I had no say how they spent it. I felt powerless.

(I feel anxious even now while writing this).

When my anxiety went through the roof that is when I would use humour to mask my anxiety. I've learned over time, how to manage these triggers, but there are many many more.
So specifically what triggered me on those two occasions? Both those incidents happened a few months before my marriage ended. The tension was mounting and I'd discovered some sordid truths. Everything was a repeat of what I'd been through with my first husband, I was re living the trauma, all over again.

2017/07/mental-illness-isnt-funny.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-2211355204196230662Wed, 12 Jul 2017 19:30:00 +00002017-07-12T12:36:29.825-07:00In My Sisters ShoesIn My Sisters ShoesThe other night I was thinking about my brothers, all 5 of them and wondering why we just aren't close and never have been. There is no doubt we love each other but none of us really connect. I have always thought it was because I was the girl, but it's more than that, we are all very different.

Then I started to think about my 3 daughters and how different they are too, but they adore each other and quite honestly when they were growing up, as a mother I worked really hard to help them respect and love each other as sisters, even if there were times they didn't particularly like each other.

As they have got older and two of them have a family the differences between them are even greater. Sometimes they don't get along as well as I would like them too, life is busy and my daughter that isn't married often feels very left out.

When we are in pain we often wish others could understand what we are feeling and going through, but each person is in their own world doing their own thing, the best they can.

There have been times in my life when the pain was so bad and I wasn't getting the comfort from family that I needed, it would make me really angry, I'd feel sorry for myself and decide I didn't even care if I never saw them again. Pain does that, it can separate us from people we care deeply about.

It's different today, in the process of understanding the Bible, which says we are to forgive 70 x 70, not in a life time, but in a day if we have to. Many times when trying to fall asleep at night I would imagine myself literally in the shoes of who ever it was that I needed love and acceptance from, imagining what their life was like and how they had to cope with their own struggles. My attitude would often change instantly.
There us so much we don't know about what goes on in other people's lives and how they feel, day to day.

My prayer for my daughters would be that they understand, having the same parents doesn't mean their experiences growing up in an abusive home was exactly the same. Each one of them experienced me as a mother, their father, 3 marriages and 3 divorces differently, and I pray they will try to wear their sisters shoes and imagine what life was like and is like now.

Divorce affects children so badly, some kids bond better with the absent parent, therefore it's tougher on them. Our children desperately need to be heard and understood, not just by parents but each other. It's the unspoken and not heard, that separates families forever sometimes.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="872" data-original-width="1600" height="217" src="; width="400" />

2017/07/in-my-sisters-shoes.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-330988341415879041Sun, 09 Jul 2017 22:18:00 +00002017-07-10T03:39:56.769-07:00ANDROPHOBIAAndrophobia - what's that. This is something I haven't spoken about very much. In 2009 which was shortly after the publication of my book, I moved to Cape Town to get away from absolutely everyone that was connected to my ex husband.

One of my daughters was married with a baby and I just wasn't coping at all with the trauma of my divorce, faking that I was just wasn't working.

I found a cute little apartment on top of someone's house, with beautiful sea views. It wasn't going to be very permanent but I needed to heal and isolation was the only way I could do it. Long walks on the beach, hours and hours of painting and reading tons of self help books my CPTSD symptoms just weren't going away.

There was a Trauma Centre near where I lived so I made an appointment to see the psychologist. She was weird, very agitated and made me feel even worse, but I was totally committed to healing and willing to overlook her strange manner. After telling her my brief story she suggested hypnotherapy and told me to lay across the couch and close my eyes, which I did. She started to do the count down and my anxiety went through the roof. I opened my eyes to find her laying on the floor in self hypnosis. I couldn't believe my eyes. That session ended immediately and I never went back.

A few weeks later I found another therapist who was sweet, but I just couldn't connect with her. I think I saw her 3 times and again chose not to go back. Several months passed nothing was changing. I loved the solitude but constant nightmares, panic attacks and absolute terror going into public places, it was torture.

In desperation I made an appointment to see a psychiatrist and it was imperative to me that the doctor was female. My first appointment with her was 2 hours and I managed to pretty much put her in the picture. She asked to see my the following day. During that appointment she concluded that I needed medication which I refused. I'd made up my mind that medication was simply going to make me feel numb and I wanted to heal and face what ever I had to face, head on.

My sessions with the psychiatrist were every day for a week and I had begged her to be honest and tell me if I had Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar, or any other mental illness and I wouldn't stop seeing her until she could come up with a diagnosis. She in the mean time had read my book so I was extremely hopeful together we would find a solution. In my last session with her, she said and I quote, 'Caryl if all my patients had as much insight as you, my wards would be empty'. Yes, and? She then said I was suffering extreme Androphobia, which I'd never heard of before. She recommended I see a male psychologist, which didn't excite me, but I was willing to give it a try. She said absolutely nothing about either PTSD or CPTSD.

After two appointments with this male psychologist who was a total chauvinist. Even with a referral letter from the psychiatrist he just wasn't getting it and I found him to be extremely confrontational, basically telling me to 'get over it'. Whaaaaaaaat? That was him over with. He tried to sue me for not continuing therapy. I was dumbfounded. Thank goodness I had a friend who was an attorney and he sent off a letter that shut him up very quickly, including a letter to the psychologist who lay on the floor self hypnosing, during my therapy session. One can imagine, I never wanted to see a therapist ever again.

The months and years passed with my symptoms becoming worse and worse. I missed my children desperately, but I didn't want to burden them. They needed a whole and happy mother which I couldn't be. Suicide was a constant thought, how much better off they would all be without this dysfunctional mother. Thank God I would force myself to think that if I chose that path, I would leave my beautiful daughters with the same pain I couldn't handle myself.

Androphobia- fear of men was unbearable. I hadn't connected the dots up to that point. I hated going to public places anywhere that men could possibly be. This went on for years. God was even a problem, in my mind God represented 'male'. But God is so Faithful even when we aren't. I was new to Facebook and slowly over time I connected with a lot of men on Facebook who were all artists. It took a long time but I started to read their posts and experience these men very differently to the men in my life. These men were all happily married, not afraid to share their softer side, it was so refreshing. My healing towards men has come a very long way, although I am still very sensitive to macho, jock type men, they are and probably will always be a trigger for me.

Thanks to my therapist Dr. Annemarie Norvello who has been a gift from God in my life. While I wasn't speaking to God, He orchestrated the best therapist I have ever come across and I will forever be thankful to her. More about that later, diagnosing CPTSD.
2017/07/androphobia-whats-that.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-4735968752346701413Sun, 02 Jul 2017 15:52:00 +00002017-07-02T08:56:02.232-07:00Princess DianaPrincess Diana It was Princess Diana ' s birthday yesterday, she would have been 56. In August it will be 20 years ago that she died. If you are anything like me, I've read dozens of articles about her and watched hours and hours of videos, documenting the Royal family.
It still saddens me today to think what that poor woman went through. She made some pretty bad choices during her marriage, her affair with Hewitt being just one of them and her questionable judgement in dating someone like Dodi. Playing with fire is putting it mildly.
I've thought about her a lot over the past 20 years and there is no doubt her unhappy childhood wasn't the best foundation for marrying into the Royal family. Insecure, young, inexperienced was a recipe for disaster marrying a man so much older than she was. She had her doubts about the wedding, red flags had already started waving in the breeze, which they both chose to ignore, after all, their names had already been embossed on everything from tea cups to dish towels.
Diana did the best she could to cope with Charles affair with Camilla, her bulimia a symptom of extreme pain, rage and helplessness. Those were the days before psychologists knew much about bulimia and nothing of CPTSD, which I am absolutely sure she suffered from.
Was she emotionally unhinged when she gave her infamous TV interview, I'm sure. Quite honestly when things started falling apart during their separation and divorce she was on her own, fighting for her survival against the entire British Monarchy who accused her of suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. Maybe that was true, in the dark ages people with mental illness were thrown into a padded cell and forgotten, but this wasn't the dark ages.
The way I see it, is that Diana had to contend with years of abandonment issues, emotional abuse, her own struggle with bulimia, possibly CPTSD, a divorce and separation from her beloved children. What chance was there for her to make calm, wise, healthy choices at that time, she made some huge mistakes, who could blame her, sadly those choices ended her life, had she been entitled to Royal security, it may not have happened, but she lost that privilege soon after her divorce.

We watch from our tiny insignificant lives the tragedies of the rich and famous, their stories are no different to our own. We witness their pain and shame on the world stage in front of millions, while we experience the same dramas unfold in our lives with family and friends, it can't compare.

To honour Princess Diana in life and in death, we continue to fight for the down trodden, the weak and broken in society. May we all be less judgemental and more compassionate, reaching out to support those who struggle alone.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1149" height="320" src="; width="229" /><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="393" data-original-width="600" height="209" src="; width="320" />

2017/07/princess-diana.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-4816592427299284852Sun, 02 Jul 2017 09:27:00 +00002017-07-02T04:12:30.100-07:00Temporary InsanityTemporary InsanityOne hears this term often used in court cases, but we seldom even try and understand what exactly that means. Click on the link -<a href=" Insanity
When I was married to my Narcissistic ex husband who I believe was torturing me mentally for years there was an incident that occurred during one of our many fights, that pushed me to my breaking point, causing me to completely lose control and I proceeded to do some damage to ornaments, TV and various other things.

It's important to put things in context, in a time line of events. A few weeks prior to this demolition I had a complete nervous break down, attempted suicide and spent time in hospital. The attempted suicide was completely unplanned. No suicide letter for my precious daughters, just an irrational decision. After 3 days of laying in bed unconscious, with no interest or intervention from my husband, my domestic worker chose wisely to call my daughters who took me immediately to hospital, no visits from my husband of course.
Anyone who has ever had a nervous breakdown will know, one is pumped full of medication and it's almost impossible to be rational. It was a few weeks later when I did the damage to my home. After I came out of hospital, my husband simply escalated the emotional abuse. I'm convinced that he was pushing me to commit suicide to escape any divorce settlement and make himself look like the victim.

My husband had me arrested and I spent 15 hours in jail which was the most traumatic experience I have ever been through in my life, far worse than the beatings he dished out regularly. I was charged with malicious damage to property. Unbeknown to me, one cannot be charged for damaging property in the matrimonial home when the property was 'ours', not his. We were married with an accrual contract. Everything was OURS, but at the time I was so mentally tortured I could barely speak my own name. My husbands cousin was an attorney, between them they were determined to destroy me. Anyone who knows me, knows I don't have a raging temper, he did, but my behaviour that night was simply out of character.
If you read my book, you may wonder what made me go back to my husband after this event? I was broken and simply submitted to 2 men who had the power to destroy me and my family, which they later did anyway. I spent the next 4 years, trying to hold on to my sanity so that I could figure out a way to escape unharmed. I may add, that from that day in 2000 to this I have never taken any medication for depression or anxiety ever again, in spite of the years of suffering with CPTSD, I was simply too afraid. I chose to heal my soul wounds consciously.

Several years later when we were getting divorced I had laid charges against him for Domestic Violence, my violent, controlling husband used the previous charges against me as leverage. He bargained, if I dropped the charges against him he would do the same. In hindsight, what a fool I was. If I knew then what I know now, I would have pursued the case to the bitter end. I had mountains of evidence against him, but I obeyed his orders and dropped all the charges. He and his cousin attorney had won that round and would win many more after.
Knowing that a violent guilty person can get off without even a rap on the knuckles can push any victim further into depression and mental illness, which in my case it did.
Please read my next post on HEALING SOUL WOUNDS.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1600" height="200" src="; width="320" />

2017/07/temporary-insanity.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-6109563247007548580Sun, 03 Jul 2016 19:39:00 +00002016-07-03T12:46:00.763-07:00NARCISSISTIC NIGHTMARENarcissistic NightmareThis is one of the most accurate descriptions of what it is like to date or marry a Narcissist. But watching the trial and listening to the psychiatrist diagnosing his General Anxiety Disorder makes me think that most men who abuse women must suffer from the same condition. The reason I say this is because most men who abuse women have had some trauma in their childhood. The response to extreme anxiety is Fight, Flight, Freeze, Submit or Attach. By nature women would be more inclined to flight under threat where as with men it is perhaps more probable that they would fight under threat.
No matter what one has been through in childhood we all have to learn to cope and make the best of bad situations and therefore there is never any reason that anyone should resort to violence unless our lives are being threatened.
Let me remind anyone who might be reading this.... that the prisons world wide are full of women who have been abused and who have resorted to fitting back and have killed their partners therefore the same amount of violent men who have abused women should be sitting behind bars. The rules apply to both.2014/05/oscar-pistorius.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-1657132047052176646Thu, 17 Apr 2014 17:01:00 +00002014-04-17T10:01:55.296-07:00AWOLIt has been a long while since I have been blogging on all my blog sites. My computer crashed and what a mission to get things back on track. This isn't even really that safe for me as I haven't been able to sort out the problems and who knows when this computer will go on the blink again. But for now lets just hold out that things will be alright.

A lot has been going on in my personal life and maybe soon I will be able to share some of that with my readers but for now I just want to talk about the Oscar Pistorius Trial. Much to the frustration of many I still am not able to form an opinion about Oscar. I am just not a person who likes to judge people at the best of times let alone when it comes to something as serious as this case. I am happy to sit back and wait for the outcome before voicing my opinion.

I don't like what happened, my heart breaks for Reeva's family and I do want to see that justice is carried out in accordance with the law. But with a background like mine I tend to think deeply about why women stay in abusive relationships beyond the obvious and why do men treat women so badly. I don't think I will ever have the answers. All I care about is that women will be educated, seek counselling when they need it, search their own hearts as to why they choose abusive men and then move on with healthy partners and hopefully find happiness. It has taken be a life time, because 'in my day' we honestly didn't have the resources available to young women today.

So with that being said I hope people will continue to read my book, scroll down for the link, and perhaps find something to relate to and make some decisions for their own lives. A crucial point:

"Of the 300 million Arabs in the Middle East and North Africa, only Israel's Arab citizens enjoy real democratic rights. Now, I want you to stop for a second and think about that. Of those 300 million Arabs, less than one-half of 1 percent are truly free and they're all citizens of Israel. What we're hearing, what you see, here is somebody who's very at home behind the microphone. He's entirely comfortable. It's easy when you actually believe what you are saying. ...

There are a lot of things in this speech. It went on for about 45 minutes, and I really do not want to try to paraphrase or repeat it. You really have to hear this speech as given.

It's a lesson in commitment. It is a lesson in confidence. It is a lesson in statecraft and leadership. This was an epic, epic speech. It was a lesson for Republicans in dealing with President Obama, even though all Netanyahu did was praise President Obama today. That's all he did. There was nothing partisan in the speech whatsoever other than his obvious love and support for his nation of Israel. But it was filled with humor, it was filled with goose bump seriousness. It ran the emotional gamut, it ran the intellectual gamut. The timing was flawless. Just a fabulous speech. The lesson that is there for people is to say what you mean, to say it confidently, to be fearless, and don't feel the need to excuse what you think or make excuses for how you feel.

Context: <a href="; rel="bookmark">Obama Lied, AIPAC Died2011/05/netanyahus-speech.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10785882.post-6528677408064571463Wed, 25 May 2011 06:58:00 +00002011-05-25T00:41:00.055-07:00Queen Elizabeth Schools Obama<a href=" dear, this is embarrassing.

First Netanyahu puts President Obama a series of primers, including that face to face history lesson on live TV around the world; then Obama embarrasses himself twice on the same day at Buckingham Palace, the second of which plays out here:

<param name="movie" value=" name="allowFullScreen" value="true">
<embed src="; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="640" height="390">

America: This is your President?2011/05/queen-elizabeth-schools-obama.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10785882.post-7331851972967148642Tue, 10 May 2011 08:14:00 +00002011-05-10T01:18:43.900-07:00Newsflash: Obama Accepts Premise Of War<a href=" they had to return fire to get out, they were authorized to do it.”

Wow. You can hear the disdain in his answer:

“If you’re complaining about the price of gas and you’re only getting 8 miles a gallon, you know,” Obama said laughingly. “You might want to think about a trade-in.”
In other words, if you don't have the money to buy the gasoline you need, then go buy a new car. Which, when you think about it, pretty much sums up His approach to the economy.

There is a subtext here as well that is worth noting, and that is the AP's initial reportage, which they subsequently completely scrubbed from their site in order to protect their Hero. Toward that end, he reveals <a href=" true thinking behind a so-called "humanitarian intervention" mission that on the surface appears to be pure folly.

Knowing what Samantha Power wants reveals a great deal about Barack Obama’s own ideological commitments. It’s not just a question of whether he shares Power’s long-term internationalist goals, although it’s highly likely that he does. Power’s thinking also represents a bridge of sorts between Obama’s domestic- and foreign-policy aspirations. Beyond that, Power embodies a style of pragmatic radicalism that Obama shares. Both Obama and Power are skilled at placing their ultimate ideological goals just out of sight, behind a screen of practical problem-solving...

Obama may not have been completely frank about the broader ideological goals behind this intervention, and yet the president’s address to the nation, as far as it went, was largely accurate. Fundamentally, our Libyan operation is a humanitarian action, with no clear or inevitable military-strategic purpose beyond that. There is enormous risk here, and no endgame. We might take strategic advantage of our restricted humanitarian action. But we might not, and, in any case, we are under no obligation to do so. For all we know, many of those we’re defending with American aircraft and missiles could be our dedicated terrorist enemies. From the standpoint of traditional calculations of national interest, this war is something akin to madness. Yet without fully articulating it (and that reticence is intentional), Obama and Power are attempting to accustom us to a whole new way of thinking about war, and about America’s place in the world...

Samantha Power has a lot to teach us about Barack Obama. She herself <a href="; itxtnodeid="213" itxtbad="1">draws analogies between the need to redistribute wealth via health-care coverage and the need to divide military and diplomatic power (and, implicitly, wealth) more evenly through the international system. Power regularly <a href="; itxtnodeid="212" itxtbad="1">invokes arguments for international law derived from America’s Founders and the West’s great liberal thinkers, as if her goal were the founding of a government of the world. In truth, that is what Power is up to, even if she sees her project as a long-term collective effort necessarily extending beyond her own lifetime.

The novel doctrine of “responsibility to protect,” which Power means the Libyan action to enshrine in international law, could someday be used to justify military intervention to impose a “two-state solution” on Israel (<a href="; itxtnodeid="231" itxtbad="1">apparently this is one of Power’s longstanding goals, although she now disavows it). The International Criminal Court, which Power has long defended, may someday enable the leftist Europeans who run it to place American soldiers and politicians on trial for supposed war crimes. The Obama administration’s <a href="; itxtnodeid="230" itxtbad="1">troubling acquiescence in the development of sweeping international prohibitions on “aggression” may one day make virtually any use of force not pre-approved by the United Nations subject to international sanctions. These are the long-term goals of Power’s policies, although they are seldom confessed or discussed.

Read the rest here: <a href=" Power's Power2011/04/stanley-kurtz-real-power-behind-obamas.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10785882.post-3233705514981241713Tue, 05 Apr 2011 07:13:00 +00002011-04-05T00:24:00.834-07:00MSNBC Freakshow: Mika Brezinzki Loses It On Air<a href=" Cheney dying is funny to Mika. Not to mention a special kind of reprehensible and appalling figure of inglorious, hideous shame to his own people through the delivery and promulgation of a false document that helped anti-Semites everywhere feel themselves justified.

He was then, and is now, an entirely despicable public figure--and so is his op-ed, by the way, which continues to act as though it is appropriate to draw parallel inferences about Hamas and the state of Israel.
