The first signs or symptoms started when I was about 6 years old and my mother was married to the first of 2 step fathers. Their relationship was very violent and my step fathers behaviour with me was sexually highly inappropriate, that's when my nightmares first started and have continued periodically for 60 years.

Although I 'existed' from that time onwards, I never ever felt normal. The symptoms of CPTSD plagued me my whole life, manifesting when triggered severely. Because my condition was undiagnosed no one else knew how much I struggled.

I want to share the extreme torment I went through, alone. At 18 I had a nervous breakdown, attempted suicide by slashing my wrists to the bone and spent time in a psychiatric hospital having shock treatment. (CPTSD went undiagnosed.) I walked out of hospital and had to hide the symptoms as best as I could, never sharing with anyone, least of all my family, the extreme struggles with nightmares, panic attacks and an eating disorder, just in case I was sent to a mental home.

My first marriage was to an extremely abusive man who became the father of my 2 oldest children. I suspect he suffered with CPTSD as well and NPD. We knew nothing of those conditions back then. He was extremely aggressive and had constant nightmares from his experiences during the war in Angola. 6 years into our marriage I was told about the physical and sexual abuse he suffered as a child and I wasn't told by him, but a relative. This explains his alcoholic, controlling, violent, jealous, lack of trust behaviour that destroyed our marriage. Huge triggers for me as this marriage was a carbon copy of my childhood experience with my step father.
Soon after my divorce I attempted suicide again, cutting my wrists again and taking an over dose to help it along. I spent a short time in a psychiatric hospital, but again CPTSD was undiagnosed. I truly believe that from that time onwards my condition was extremely severe and I just wasn't able to function like normal people.

This condition actually caused the breakdown of my second marriage and not the financial problems. I was diagnosed with Petimol Epilepsy and put on medication, which I discovered after 30 years is a mood stabiliser prescribed also for patients with PTSD. I was told I had Petimol Epilepsy, NOT CPTSD.

My third marriage and the most traumatic was to a man diagnosed with NPD. I had no idea what that was and had never heard of the condition. I suspect looking back that he had CPTSD too, the same as my first husband. 14 years of torture.
My own symptoms on a scale of 0 - 10 throughout that marriage were probably a 10. After my divorce they shot up to 20 and remained that way for 10 years. I was completely unable to function and suicide was a daily consideration.

For 63 years I had seen 5 psychiatrists, 2 neurologists, 7 psychologists, read hundreds of books like, Why am I afraid to tell you who I am, The 5 love languages, The Cindarella Complex, Co Dependent No more.... and hundreds more. I have been hospitalised 4 times, attempted suicide 4 times.

I AM SO ANGRY that for 60 years not one single doctor mentioned PTSD let alone CPTSD. Why did they not diagnose my condition?

MY CONDITION WAS CAUSED BY THE NEGLECT, SEXUAL AND PHYSICAL ABUSE INFLICTED ON ME BY OTHER PEOPLE, I WAS NOT BORN THIS WAY.

Men and women have suffered and lost their lives from this condition for centuries. Well I won't harp on about that, I am grateful to be alive. I did survive. My life isn't perfect this condition has cost me dearly, but I have 3 beautiful daughters, 4 gorgeous grandchildren, 2 lovely son in laws, a handful of patient, loving understanding friends and 2 family members who have not judged me.

There has to be a GOD because He orchestrated miraculously my introduction to Dr. Annemarie Norvello who treated me for this condition for 3 years, not once a month or twice a month, but every single week. I am alive because I never gave up and neither did she, I left no stone unturned. There was no FACEBOOK GROUP in my journey to heal, but there are many groups today that offer support. Use them.

Not once in 10 years did I suppress my trauma with, denial, drugs, alcohol or new relationships, but if that's what you do, DON'T beat yourself up, this is an incredibly difficult illness to cure. Just take one day at a time, by choosing to do the right thing. Loving yourselves enough to follow through with treatment.

I share my complete story in my book LOOK ME IN THE EYE -Caryl Wyatt and I have shared my healing journey too. I pray sincerely if you are reading this, you won't give up, but that you will believe with the right treatment, you can heal your life too.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1288" data-original-width="1289" height="319" src="; width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="627" height="400" src="; width="261" />

Click on the link below

<a href=" ME IN THE EYE - Caryl Wyatt

Footnote: I did'nt win any prizes for being the best mother in the world, but my daughters always knew I absolutely loved and adored them enough to fight for them.

2017/08/cptsd-complex-post-traumatic-disorder.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-55339795308130777Mon, 17 Jul 2017 16:21:00 +00002017-07-17T09:22:55.757-07:00Generational TraumaGenerational TraumaThe idea that we can carry generational trauma is not a great thought for anyone, when does it end. It makes me wonder? The Bible speaks of the sins of the forefathers being cast upon up to the forth generation. The things our parents struggled with become our problem, no one likes that idea, but it's the truth. None of us escape 'doing the work'. The work of owning our own stuff and working through it.
The bible also says, 'work out your own salvation with fear and trembling', that means 'own your stuff' and work through it without blaming anyone. Click on the link to find out more about generational trauma.
<a href=" Family Trauma2017/07/generational-trauma.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-7758970836998483877Mon, 17 Jul 2017 14:26:00 +00002017-07-17T07:58:20.949-07:00TriggersMental illness isn't funny
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="416" data-original-width="600" height="276" src="; width="400" />
What's the difference between a mental illness and a sense of humour? It's too late to ask Robin Williams but I can try and tell you.
As a young child both my brother and I had an incredible sense of humour. I used to laugh at him a lot, though he didn't find me very funny. Throughout my life, if you asked all the people who have known me, they would tell you I have a good sense of humour. The problem is that at times I didn't know what was funny and what was a diversion from my pain. The thing is, neither did anyone else which made it difficult for me to communicate effectively, my struggles with CPTSD.

There have been times in my life that I've done some pretty bazaar things, which others found amusing but in my heart I know came from extreme stress and anxiety and not from a humorous place.

There are two stories that I can remember in particular. A friend of mine was getting married and at her bachelorette she had 2 male strippers. The function was held in my home. After the strippers finished their little act, I went upstairs and dressed up like a stripper, nothing over the top, but very high shoes, teased big hair and heavy make up. Requesting that the male stripper sit in a chair I proceeded to act out a lap dance. Of course all the guests found it very amusing, but one of my daughters did not, she was highly embarrassed.

On another occasion I went to the theatre with my ex husband and some friends. That night I was carrying a very pretty and unusual handbag that I loved. During the interval I went to the bathroom and a lady made an incredible fuss about my bag, saying it was the most exquisite bag she had ever seen. I looked at her grubby bag and asked her go give it to me. I emptied the contents of both bags out on the basin and filled my bag with all her goodies and gave it to her. Putting all my things into her bag I said 'you can have it'. While she stood in absolute shock I turned and walked out of the rest room.

There are so many stories similar to these two. Of course other people wouldn't think much about these two examples, but years later when I started therapy I looked back over my life at all these incidents and I wept, with a broken heart, for my inner child, constantly using humour to mask the pain. Both these incidents and many more happened during my 3rd marriage to a man I absolutely adored, but who tortured my soul daily.

When I was in therapy, I shared these stories with embarrassment, to my therapist. My question to her was why? She had no problem with anything I shared with her, if I was happy with the memories, which I wasn't, but I needed to understand why I had behaved so out of character on so many occasions. It wasn't difficult for her to explain, it was my way of coping with extreme anxiety and in all situations I was hugely triggered.

Most people who don't suffer with PTSD or CPTSD wouldn't understand, what is a trigger, it's different for each victim, but I'm going to try and explain one of my biggest triggers by unravelling one of my worst - crowds of people.

Therapist : what is it about crowds that makes you anxious, what are crowds normally doing.
Me: shopping, watching sport, at a concert, having a party.
Therapist : what are they doing that you find stressful.
Me: they are drinking or if they are shopping they are spending money.
Therapist : why does that upset you?
Me : because the drinking gets more and more out of control, everyone gets drunk, there is going to be an argument which might lead to someone being beaten up. If they are spending money it reminds me of the shopping sprees my husband used to go on where he spent so much money in a short space of time, on anything from a suit to a building. He had the money and never ever discussed with me what he spent it on. It was overwhelming.
Therapist : why was that a problem for you?
Me : because when people drink, the violence and abuse was often directed at me, from my husband, from my ex husband, from my mother and my step fathers.
My 2 abusive husbands earned the money and I had no say how they spent it. I felt powerless.

(I feel anxious even now while writing this).

When my anxiety went through the roof that is when I would use humour to mask my anxiety. I've learned over time, how to manage these triggers, but there are many many more.
So specifically what triggered me on those two occasions? Both those incidents happened a few months before my marriage ended. The tension was mounting and I'd discovered some sordid truths. Everything was a repeat of what I'd been through with my first husband, I was re living the trauma, all over again.

2017/07/mental-illness-isnt-funny.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-2211355204196230662Wed, 12 Jul 2017 19:30:00 +00002017-07-12T12:36:29.825-07:00In My Sisters ShoesIn My Sisters ShoesThe other night I was thinking about my brothers, all 5 of them and wondering why we just aren't close and never have been. There is no doubt we love each other but none of us really connect. I have always thought it was because I was the girl, but it's more than that, we are all very different.

Then I started to think about my 3 daughters and how different they are too, but they adore each other and quite honestly when they were growing up, as a mother I worked really hard to help them respect and love each other as sisters, even if there were times they didn't particularly like each other.

As they have got older and two of them have a family the differences between them are even greater. Sometimes they don't get along as well as I would like them too, life is busy and my daughter that isn't married often feels very left out.

When we are in pain we often wish others could understand what we are feeling and going through, but each person is in their own world doing their own thing, the best they can.

There have been times in my life when the pain was so bad and I wasn't getting the comfort from family that I needed, it would make me really angry, I'd feel sorry for myself and decide I didn't even care if I never saw them again. Pain does that, it can separate us from people we care deeply about.

It's different today, in the process of understanding the Bible, which says we are to forgive 70 x 70, not in a life time, but in a day if we have to. Many times when trying to fall asleep at night I would imagine myself literally in the shoes of who ever it was that I needed love and acceptance from, imagining what their life was like and how they had to cope with their own struggles. My attitude would often change instantly.
There us so much we don't know about what goes on in other people's lives and how they feel, day to day.

My prayer for my daughters would be that they understand, having the same parents doesn't mean their experiences growing up in an abusive home was exactly the same. Each one of them experienced me as a mother, their father, 3 marriages and 3 divorces differently, and I pray they will try to wear their sisters shoes and imagine what life was like and is like now.

Divorce affects children so badly, some kids bond better with the absent parent, therefore it's tougher on them. Our children desperately need to be heard and understood, not just by parents but each other. It's the unspoken and not heard, that separates families forever sometimes.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="872" data-original-width="1600" height="217" src="; width="400" />

2017/07/in-my-sisters-shoes.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-330988341415879041Sun, 09 Jul 2017 22:18:00 +00002017-07-10T03:39:56.769-07:00ANDROPHOBIAAndrophobia - what's that. This is something I haven't spoken about very much. In 2009 which was shortly after the publication of my book, I moved to Cape Town to get away from absolutely everyone that was connected to my ex husband.

One of my daughters was married with a baby and I just wasn't coping at all with the trauma of my divorce, faking that I was just wasn't working.

I found a cute little apartment on top of someone's house, with beautiful sea views. It wasn't going to be very permanent but I needed to heal and isolation was the only way I could do it. Long walks on the beach, hours and hours of painting and reading tons of self help books my CPTSD symptoms just weren't going away.

There was a Trauma Centre near where I lived so I made an appointment to see the psychologist. She was weird, very agitated and made me feel even worse, but I was totally committed to healing and willing to overlook her strange manner. After telling her my brief story she suggested hypnotherapy and told me to lay across the couch and close my eyes, which I did. She started to do the count down and my anxiety went through the roof. I opened my eyes to find her laying on the floor in self hypnosis. I couldn't believe my eyes. That session ended immediately and I never went back.

A few weeks later I found another therapist who was sweet, but I just couldn't connect with her. I think I saw her 3 times and again chose not to go back. Several months passed nothing was changing. I loved the solitude but constant nightmares, panic attacks and absolute terror going into public places, it was torture.

In desperation I made an appointment to see a psychiatrist and it was imperative to me that the doctor was female. My first appointment with her was 2 hours and I managed to pretty much put her in the picture. She asked to see my the following day. During that appointment she concluded that I needed medication which I refused. I'd made up my mind that medication was simply going to make me feel numb and I wanted to heal and face what ever I had to face, head on.

My sessions with the psychiatrist were every day for a week and I had begged her to be honest and tell me if I had Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar, or any other mental illness and I wouldn't stop seeing her until she could come up with a diagnosis. She in the mean time had read my book so I was extremely hopeful together we would find a solution. In my last session with her, she said and I quote, 'Caryl if all my patients had as much insight as you, my wards would be empty'. Yes, and? She then said I was suffering extreme Androphobia, which I'd never heard of before. She recommended I see a male psychologist, which didn't excite me, but I was willing to give it a try. She said absolutely nothing about either PTSD or CPTSD.

After two appointments with this male psychologist who was a total chauvinist. Even with a referral letter from the psychiatrist he just wasn't getting it and I found him to be extremely confrontational, basically telling me to 'get over it'. Whaaaaaaaat? That was him over with. He tried to sue me for not continuing therapy. I was dumbfounded. Thank goodness I had a friend who was an attorney and he sent off a letter that shut him up very quickly, including a letter to the psychologist who lay on the floor self hypnosing, during my therapy session. One can imagine, I never wanted to see a therapist ever again.

The months and years passed with my symptoms becoming worse and worse. I missed my children desperately, but I didn't want to burden them. They needed a whole and happy mother which I couldn't be. Suicide was a constant thought, how much better off they would all be without this dysfunctional mother. Thank God I would force myself to think that if I chose that path, I would leave my beautiful daughters with the same pain I couldn't handle myself.

Androphobia- fear of men was unbearable. I hadn't connected the dots up to that point. I hated going to public places anywhere that men could possibly be. This went on for years. God was even a problem, in my mind God represented 'male'. But God is so Faithful even when we aren't. I was new to Facebook and slowly over time I connected with a lot of men on Facebook who were all artists. It took a long time but I started to read their posts and experience these men very differently to the men in my life. These men were all happily married, not afraid to share their softer side, it was so refreshing. My healing towards men has come a very long way, although I am still very sensitive to macho, jock type men, they are and probably will always be a trigger for me.

Thanks to my therapist Dr. Annemarie Norvello who has been a gift from God in my life. While I wasn't speaking to God, He orchestrated the best therapist I have ever come across and I will forever be thankful to her. More about that later, diagnosing CPTSD.
2017/07/androphobia-whats-that.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-4735968752346701413Sun, 02 Jul 2017 15:52:00 +00002017-07-02T08:56:02.232-07:00Princess DianaPrincess Diana It was Princess Diana ' s birthday yesterday, she would have been 56. In August it will be 20 years ago that she died. If you are anything like me, I've read dozens of articles about her and watched hours and hours of videos, documenting the Royal family.
It still saddens me today to think what that poor woman went through. She made some pretty bad choices during her marriage, her affair with Hewitt being just one of them and her questionable judgement in dating someone like Dodi. Playing with fire is putting it mildly.
I've thought about her a lot over the past 20 years and there is no doubt her unhappy childhood wasn't the best foundation for marrying into the Royal family. Insecure, young, inexperienced was a recipe for disaster marrying a man so much older than she was. She had her doubts about the wedding, red flags had already started waving in the breeze, which they both chose to ignore, after all, their names had already been embossed on everything from tea cups to dish towels.
Diana did the best she could to cope with Charles affair with Camilla, her bulimia a symptom of extreme pain, rage and helplessness. Those were the days before psychologists knew much about bulimia and nothing of CPTSD, which I am absolutely sure she suffered from.
Was she emotionally unhinged when she gave her infamous TV interview, I'm sure. Quite honestly when things started falling apart during their separation and divorce she was on her own, fighting for her survival against the entire British Monarchy who accused her of suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. Maybe that was true, in the dark ages people with mental illness were thrown into a padded cell and forgotten, but this wasn't the dark ages.
The way I see it, is that Diana had to contend with years of abandonment issues, emotional abuse, her own struggle with bulimia, possibly CPTSD, a divorce and separation from her beloved children. What chance was there for her to make calm, wise, healthy choices at that time, she made some huge mistakes, who could blame her, sadly those choices ended her life, had she been entitled to Royal security, it may not have happened, but she lost that privilege soon after her divorce.

We watch from our tiny insignificant lives the tragedies of the rich and famous, their stories are no different to our own. We witness their pain and shame on the world stage in front of millions, while we experience the same dramas unfold in our lives with family and friends, it can't compare.

To honour Princess Diana in life and in death, we continue to fight for the down trodden, the weak and broken in society. May we all be less judgemental and more compassionate, reaching out to support those who struggle alone.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1149" height="320" src="; width="229" /><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="393" data-original-width="600" height="209" src="; width="320" />

2017/07/princess-diana.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-4816592427299284852Sun, 02 Jul 2017 09:27:00 +00002017-07-02T04:12:30.100-07:00Temporary InsanityTemporary InsanityOne hears this term often used in court cases, but we seldom even try and understand what exactly that means. Click on the link -<a href=" Insanity
When I was married to my Narcissistic ex husband who I believe was torturing me mentally for years there was an incident that occurred during one of our many fights, that pushed me to my breaking point, causing me to completely lose control and I proceeded to do some damage to ornaments, TV and various other things.

It's important to put things in context, in a time line of events. A few weeks prior to this demolition I had a complete nervous break down, attempted suicide and spent time in hospital. The attempted suicide was completely unplanned. No suicide letter for my precious daughters, just an irrational decision. After 3 days of laying in bed unconscious, with no interest or intervention from my husband, my domestic worker chose wisely to call my daughters who took me immediately to hospital, no visits from my husband of course.
Anyone who has ever had a nervous breakdown will know, one is pumped full of medication and it's almost impossible to be rational. It was a few weeks later when I did the damage to my home. After I came out of hospital, my husband simply escalated the emotional abuse. I'm convinced that he was pushing me to commit suicide to escape any divorce settlement and make himself look like the victim.

My husband had me arrested and I spent 15 hours in jail which was the most traumatic experience I have ever been through in my life, far worse than the beatings he dished out regularly. I was charged with malicious damage to property. Unbeknown to me, one cannot be charged for damaging property in the matrimonial home when the property was 'ours', not his. We were married with an accrual contract. Everything was OURS, but at the time I was so mentally tortured I could barely speak my own name. My husbands cousin was an attorney, between them they were determined to destroy me. Anyone who knows me, knows I don't have a raging temper, he did, but my behaviour that night was simply out of character.
If you read my book, you may wonder what made me go back to my husband after this event? I was broken and simply submitted to 2 men who had the power to destroy me and my family, which they later did anyway. I spent the next 4 years, trying to hold on to my sanity so that I could figure out a way to escape unharmed. I may add, that from that day in 2000 to this I have never taken any medication for depression or anxiety ever again, in spite of the years of suffering with CPTSD, I was simply too afraid. I chose to heal my soul wounds consciously.

Several years later when we were getting divorced I had laid charges against him for Domestic Violence, my violent, controlling husband used the previous charges against me as leverage. He bargained, if I dropped the charges against him he would do the same. In hindsight, what a fool I was. If I knew then what I know now, I would have pursued the case to the bitter end. I had mountains of evidence against him, but I obeyed his orders and dropped all the charges. He and his cousin attorney had won that round and would win many more after.
Knowing that a violent guilty person can get off without even a rap on the knuckles can push any victim further into depression and mental illness, which in my case it did.
Please read my next post on HEALING SOUL WOUNDS.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1000" data-original-width="1600" height="200" src="; width="320" />

2017/07/temporary-insanity.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-6109563247007548580Sun, 03 Jul 2016 19:39:00 +00002016-07-03T12:46:00.763-07:00NARCISSISTIC NIGHTMARENarcissistic NightmareThis is one of the most accurate descriptions of what it is like to date or marry a Narcissist. But watching the trial and listening to the psychiatrist diagnosing his General Anxiety Disorder makes me think that most men who abuse women must suffer from the same condition. The reason I say this is because most men who abuse women have had some trauma in their childhood. The response to extreme anxiety is Fight, Flight, Freeze, Submit or Attach. By nature women would be more inclined to flight under threat where as with men it is perhaps more probable that they would fight under threat.
No matter what one has been through in childhood we all have to learn to cope and make the best of bad situations and therefore there is never any reason that anyone should resort to violence unless our lives are being threatened.
Let me remind anyone who might be reading this.... that the prisons world wide are full of women who have been abused and who have resorted to fitting back and have killed their partners therefore the same amount of violent men who have abused women should be sitting behind bars. The rules apply to both.2014/05/oscar-pistorius.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-1657132047052176646Thu, 17 Apr 2014 17:01:00 +00002014-04-17T10:01:55.296-07:00AWOLIt has been a long while since I have been blogging on all my blog sites. My computer crashed and what a mission to get things back on track. This isn't even really that safe for me as I haven't been able to sort out the problems and who knows when this computer will go on the blink again. But for now lets just hold out that things will be alright.

A lot has been going on in my personal life and maybe soon I will be able to share some of that with my readers but for now I just want to talk about the Oscar Pistorius Trial. Much to the frustration of many I still am not able to form an opinion about Oscar. I am just not a person who likes to judge people at the best of times let alone when it comes to something as serious as this case. I am happy to sit back and wait for the outcome before voicing my opinion.

I don't like what happened, my heart breaks for Reeva's family and I do want to see that justice is carried out in accordance with the law. But with a background like mine I tend to think deeply about why women stay in abusive relationships beyond the obvious and why do men treat women so badly. I don't think I will ever have the answers. All I care about is that women will be educated, seek counselling when they need it, search their own hearts as to why they choose abusive men and then move on with healthy partners and hopefully find happiness. It has taken be a life time, because 'in my day' we honestly didn't have the resources available to young women today.

So with that being said I hope people will continue to read my book, scroll down for the link, and perhaps find something to relate to and make some decisions for their own lives. After all that was my intention from the very beginning. Read my story.. could this be you?2014/04/awol.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-5138601312490331281Sun, 22 Dec 2013 08:02:00 +00002013-12-22T00:02:51.832-08:00An interesting article for you to read <a href=" ON THIS LINK.2013/12/an-interesting-article-for-you-to-read.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Caryl)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3239446455948104390.post-5245096438798478611Sun, 01 Dec 2013 09:19:00 +00002013-12-01T01:19:32.006-08:00PTSDFor anyone struggling with PTSD please read this blog the information is invaluable. Please click on the <a href=" LINK.
Incase you are interested, for those who know me and know my love of art and my intense interest in the meaning of everything, the flower on the cover of my new book is called a Blushing Bride. The flower is part of the South African Protea family. The flower of this plant only blossoms in September and it is a difficult flower to find in florists. It is my most favourite of all flowers. The petals are tissue thin, it's exquisitly beautiful and delicate it resembles a beautiful slightly pink wedding dress.
When the flower is out of water it makes a beautiful dried flower, but ... when dried the tissue paper thin petals become quite brittle and the ends of the petals become tiny thorns.

Weddings, Oh the wedding. That one special day our lives are changed forever. Erwin, MA
Department of Criminology, Law & Society
University of California
Irvine, California, 92697-7080
e-mail: perwin@uci.edu

An article commissioned by:
Battered Women’s Justice Project-Criminal Justice Office
2104 Fourth Avenue S., Suite B
Minneapolis, MN 55404
800-903-0111, ext. 1

In the 1990's the Federal government passed two pieces of legislation that had a major impact on the disabilities rights movement and the battered women’s movement in the United States. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1992 and the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994 served notice that both communities were being afforded new protections, new resources, and renewed recognition by the Federal government. The ADA significantly broadens the scope of what is considered a disability and guarantees access to jobs and public places (Section, 1998) for the approximately 54 million Americans with disabilities (Tyiska, 1998). The VAWA adds several federal domestic violence crimes and provides for a civil rights remedy for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. However, at the intersection of disability and domestic violence is a population of women that has been rendered invisible by a lack of services in the battered women’s movement and a lack of recognition of the violence in their lives by disability service providers. In the words of one researcher, the experiences of violence against women with disabilities have been neither voiced nor heard. (Chenoweth, 1997).

The multiple oppressions of being female, being disabled and being battered leave this community extremely vulnerable to intimate partners and to caregivers. In fact, all of the barriers an able-bodied victim of domestic violence might face are simply compounded by the victim’s own disability as well as the paucity of services available to help her lead a violence-free life. If women’s helplessness and vulnerability generally are seen as an opportunity as well as an excuse for male violence, disabled women’s vulnerability is seen as a blanket invitation. Disabled women are attacked again and again by partners, caretakers and strangers (Burstow, 1992). Although reliable statistics are few, some researchers who have delved into this area call the problem an “epidemic” (with most conceding it is a vast unknown. (Nosek & Howland, 1998) (Groce, 1990; Grothaus, 1985; National Clearinghouse on Family Violence, 1998; National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1996; Sobsey, 1994; Strong & Freeman, 1997; Tyiska, 1998).

DEFINING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

The term domestic violence is the most commonly used term to describe assault between intimates and usually includes a two-part statute: the description of what constitutes an assault and the relationship required between the parties to qualify as a “domestic” assault. For example, California statute defines abuse as:

“Intentionally or recklessly causing or attempting to cause bodily injury, or placing another person in reasonable apprehension of imminent serious bodily injury

and “domestic violence” as:

Abuse committed against an adult or fully emancipated minor who is a spouse, former spouse, cohabitant, former cohabitant, or a person with whom the suspect has had a child or is having or has had a dating or engagement relationship.” (California Penal Code Section 13700(a)(b).)
In addition, domestic abuse is commonly referred to as a pattern of coercive behaviors that involves physical abuse or the threat of physical abuse. It also may include repeated psychological abuse, assault, progressive social isolation, deprivation, intimidation or economic coercion (Denver, 1998). While the criminal justice system usually focuses only on a single incident that brings a domestic assault to the police or the courts, research shows that there are usually multiple incidents that have taken place and multiple interventions. A 1970's study demonstrated that in domestic homicides police had been called to the home at least once before in 80% of the cases, and more than five times in 50% of the cases (Ferraro, 1993). In addition, Dobash and Dobash (1979) found that on average, battered women leave and come back six to seven times, with the most commonly cited reasons for returning as children, lack of resources, and fear of retribution. This ongoing pattern of physical assaults coupled with other tactics of control is often termed battering (Pence & Paymar, 1993).

SCOPE OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES

The problem of domestic violence generally is a well-documented and very serious phenomena. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Uniform Crime Reports (UCR) in 1995, female murder victims were more than twice as likely as men to have been killed by husbands or boyfriends; and for those cases in which the victim-offender relationship was known, husbands or boyfriends killed 26% of female murder victims, whereas wives or girlfriends killed 3% of the male victims’ (Craven, 1996). The rate of battering is similarly lopsided against women. The same report said that women experienced seven times as many incidents of non-fatal violence by an intimate than did males. And in the latest Department of Justice (DOJ) study, the National Violence Against Women Survey, the authors concluded:

“The survey found that women were significantly more likely than men to report being raped and physically assaulted by a current or former partner, whether the time frame considered was the person’s lifetime or the 12 months preceding the survey. Moreover, women who were raped or physically assaulted by a current or former intimate partner were significantly more likely to sustain injuries than men who were raped or physically assaulted by a current or former intimate partner. Given these findings, intimate partner violence should be considered first and foremost a crime against women.” (Emphasis added.)
National crime victim surveys on the prevalence of violence against women in intimate relationships estimate that approximately 25% of all women will experience violence by a partner at some time in their life. The National Violence Against Women Survey (1998) found that 25% of surveyed women, compared with 8% of surveyed men, said they were raped and/or physically assaulted by a current or former spouse, cohabitating partner, or date at some point in their life. The survey revealed that most physical assaults consisted of grabbing, pushing, shoving, slapping and hitting, but that as the level of violence and injury increase, the “difference between men’s and women’s rates of physical assault . . . become greater. Women were two to three times more likely than men to report an intimate partner threw something that could hurt or pushed, grabbed or shoved them. However, they were 7 to 14 times more likely to relate that an intimate partner beat them up, choked or tried to drown them, threatened them with a gun, or actually used a gun on them” (Tjaden & Thoennes, 1998).

A 1996 U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) report on female victims of violent crime - based on several reports from the BJS and the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports - found that in 1992-93, females experienced 7 times as many incidents of non-fatal violence by an intimate as did males. Each year women experience more than 1,000,000 violent victimizations committed by an intimated, compared to about 143,000 that men experienced (Craven, 1996). Clearly, the rates of violence against women by intimates in this country are significant.

Given the high rate of violence against women in general, the question arises - what about women with disabilities? According to the National Council on Disability there are approximately 54 million Americans reporting some level of disability; of these, females have a disability rate of 20.2% and a severe disability rate of 11% (Tyiska, 1998). Disabilities range from mental retardation to being wheelchair bound, from being sight-impaired to total hearing loss. But getting a handle on the number of victims with disabilities who are victimized by any types of crime has proved elusive so far. The Office for Victims of Crime, in a special bulletin on the subject says it “offers no authoritative ‘census’ describing the numbers and characteristics of the victim population under review” (Tyiska, 1998).

There are approximately a half-dozen studies looking at the subject of physical assaults against women with disabilities. Most of the studies that have been conducted in this area are from North America. They range in their estimations of the prevalence of this problem from 39% to 85% of women with disabilities experiencing some type of physical or emotional abuse at the hands of an intimate partner or caregiver. The DisAbled Women’s Network of Canada did a study of 245 women with disabilities in 1989 and found that 40% had experienced abuse (Nosek & Howland, 1998); the Institute for the National Clearinghouse on Family Violence reports on a study that found 40% of women with disabilities had been assault, raped or abused, and 39% of ever-married women with a disability had been physically or sexually assaulted by their partners (L'Institut Roeher Institute, 1994); the National Institute of Health studied 860 women, 439 of whom were disabled and found matching levels of reported physical abuse (36% in both groups) and sexual abuse (40% with disabilities vs. 37% for women without disabilities) but differences in the length of time abuse was experienced - 3.9 years compared to 2.5 years on average in favor of women with disabilities (Young, Margaret A. Nosek, Howland, Chanpong, & Diana H. Rintala, 1997); and the Colorado Department of Health reports that 85% of women with disabilities are victims of abuse (Tyiska, 1998).

Unfortunately, most of these studies do not separate out abuse by an intimate partner versus abuse by a non-intimate caregiver, and as noted earlier, do not distinguish between types of abuse committed, e.g. physical versus verbal. Only the National Institute of Health (NIH) broke down abuse by attendants and health care providers and found women with disabilities are “significantly” more likely to be abused by this population (Young et al., 1997)

THE INTERSECTION OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND DISABILITY

Given this, it seems obvious that women with disabilities will also be victims of this type of crime (McPherson, 1991). However, none of the national surveys done to date address whether or not female victims are disabled, and the studies that have been done with this population mostly lump together all violence against women with disabilities (i.e., domestic violence, rape, sexual assault, stranger assault etc.) and do not distinguish as to whether or not it was committed by an intimate partner (Nosek & Howland, 1998). According to Sharon Hickman, Executive Director of the Domestic Violence Initiative for Women with Disabilities, most policy makers, service providers and researchers simply do not see the population. “ . . . they think if they don’t see a wheelchair or a guide dog there is no disability. Nobody has had the money, the interest or the clout . . . to do a good definitive study on this,” she said. “It is mostly a hidden population” (Hickman, 1998).

Societal attitudes about women with disabilities may be the cause of this exclusion as many people assume that women in this population do not have significant others.

“Women with severe disabilities are not expected to have relationships. We are perceived as asexual, as not desiring love or sex or a committed involvement” (Grothaus, 1985). A recent study, however, confirms that women with disabilities are involved in intimate relationships, and very concerned about the issue of violence within these setting. The survey found that abuse and violence was one of the top five concerns according to 92% of the participants and that 85% rated it as "very important" (Freeman, Strong, Barker, & Haight-Liotta, 1996).

“The results of the Delphi survey indicate that women with disabilities themselves recognize abuse and violence, especially caretaker abuse, as a high priority issue that gets little attention from most service providers and policy makers. Women with disabilities share with non-disabled women the fact that their intimate partners may physically, emotionally, or verbally abuse them. However, they can also be subject to the types of abuse that are not issues for non-disabled women, such as denial of medications, withholding of attendant services, or preventing use of assistive devices. Assistive caretakers may be parents or other family members, or paid staff, as well as intimate partners, and the consequences of separation from these caretakers may be life-threatening.”
Caregiver violence is another aspect of interpersonal violence that women with disabilities face. Many rely on a paid or unpaid personal assistant to help them with a host of daily activities ranging from grocery shopping to bathing. The types of violence perpetrated in this relationship are outside of the usual definition of domestic violence, but can be just as impactful and can include the same physical violence many women suffer (literally - delete) at the hands of their partners.

Once in an abusive relationship, women with disabilities are motivated to stay by the same host of factors that keep non-disabled women in these relationships - fear of further violence, belief the batterer will change, love of the abuser, having children in common, having no economic support if they leave, religious beliefs, and many other concerns. But for women with disabilities there are additional factors that can limit their ability to leave such as physically not being able to exit the house, fear of losing caregiver service if they report the abuse, not knowing if the local shelter is physically accessible (i.e., wheelchair ramp, workers who know sign language), fear they will be institutionalized if they leave their partner and lack of resources. The latter is particularly important as many women with disabilities either do not work or are not employed full time. The unemployment rate of women who are disabled is reported to be 74%, and those who do work earn only 64% of the wages of able-bodied women (Burstow, 1992). Magnifying all of these issues is the fact that society’s message to women with disabilities is they are lucky to have anyone. “Disabled women may have little confidence in themselves because they have been told by society that they are not attractive . . . (they) have greater difficulties finding a spouse than non-disabled women or disabled men” (McPherson, 1991). When a woman with disabilities does get into a relationship, “she may feel validated as a woman and as a sexual being. It may be very hard for her to reject the role of lover/wife that she never expected to have in the first place” (Grothaus, 1985). And “for many young women with an intellectual disability, having a boyfriend or a fiancee is a highly desired status” (Chenoweth, 1997). Fear of losing that status may keep many of these women from reporting abusive behavior by their partner.

RESPONDING TO THE BATTERED WOMAN WITH A DISABILITY

The intersection of being a woman in today’s society and having a disability converge to enhance the negative impact of domestic violence.

“Being a woman with a disability has been described as a “double jeopardy,” as “two strikes,” and as having an “added layer of oppression.” These metaphors speak powerfully of the experiences of simultaneous discrimination through both having impairments and being a woman . . . Identifying differences in this way is a complex process involving discrimination, marginalization, and oppression through the points where multiple identities intersect.” (Chenoweth, 1997 :116)

Additionally, support services for battered women who are also disabled are very limited with many shelters not fully accessible (Nosek, 1998). Women with disabilities “often find themselves in the situation where they not only are victims of violence in their homes, but may also be unable to apply for even the few community programs designed for the non-disabled . . . without a TTY for example, a hotline is of little help to a deaf woman . . . a shelter without a ramp is inaccessible to a wheelchair user who has been repeatedly battered and needs to leave home” (Groce, 1990). Furthermore, many of the tools offered to able-bodied battered women simply don’t work for a woman with a disability. For example, “few of the strategies listed in the classic safety plans are possible for women who must depend on their abuser to get them out of bed in the morning, dress them, and feed them” (Nosek & Howland, 1998).
If a woman seeks help from a disability service provider or other community provider she may face a lack of understanding or knowledge of domestic violence. The Center for Independent Living in Carson City, Nevada did a study in which they sent surveys to 41 local agencies with three scenarios involving women with disabilities and domestic violence. The agencies were first asked what services they might provide to the women and then were asked what information and referral they would provide to the women. Of the 16 agencies which responded, 80% failed to identify domestic violence as an issue in the three scenarios (Hammon, 1999). Although this is a very small sample, it indicates that similar surveys are needed to determine whether or not domestic violence is being correctly identified by disability service providers.

The issue of caregiver abuse raises further impediments for a woman with a disability. Reporting the abuse may result in the loss of her caregiver, whether they are an intimate partner or not. According to a review of the literature, women relying on caregivers are reluctant to report abuse because of threats that the caregiver will withdraw their services, threats by social workers that children will be taken away and threats by family members that the individual will be institutionalized or re-institutionalized (L'Institut Roeher Institute, 1994).

Police response in these situations is likewise inadequate due too few protocols instructing line officers how to handle situations when either the victim or the suspect has a disability. If a victim is in a wheelchair and wants to go to a shelter, the police need to know whether the shelter is accessible and then how to transport the victim. Police also exhibit some of the same prejudices as society at large concerning the disabled and this may be reflected in their response (L'Institut Roeher Institute 1994) (Sanders 1997). If and when a prosecutor receives a case of domestic assault or caregiver abuse against a woman with a disability, issues of credibility, corroborating evidence, and accessibility will face her once again.

Furthermore, the crossover of domestic violence and disabilities brings up two unique cause and effect scenarios. The first is the impact of battering on a pregnant woman and her increased chances of giving birth to a disabled child. Sobsey (1994) says that battery of mothers during pregnancy causes an “unknown number of disabilities in their children” and that “low birth weight babies are born 2 to 4 times as frequently to mothers battered during pregnancy.” Second, there is the issue of the number of domestic violence victims who become disabled as a result of the abuse perpetrated upon them. This figure is unknown, but the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) estimates that there are at least 6 million people each year who suffer a permanent or temporary disability as the result of crime-related incident (Tyiska, 1998).

ABUSIVE TACTICS AGAINST WOMEN WITH DISABILITIES

Most women who are victims of domestic abuse not only suffer from physical assaults, but also are subject to a variety of other tactics that serve to keep them in the abusive relationship. According to the Power and Control Wheel these tactics include: intimidation, emotional abuse, isolation, minimizing, denying and blaming, using children, male privilege, economic abuse and coercion and threats. For women with disabilities in an intimate relationship, these tactics can be exacerbated by her disability. The following table gives examples of abusive tactics used against women with disabilities by intimate partners and by caregivers.

Table 1
Examples of Abusive Tactics Against Women with Disabilities by Intimate Partners and Caregivers

TACTICS OF ABUSE
Isolation
Dismantling wheelchairs; disconnecting phones; using medications to sedate a woman; breaking or hiding crutches; not equipping a vehicle to be driven by someone with a disability

Controlling access to family, friends and neighbors; controlling access to phone or destroying communication devices; limiting employment opportunities; discouraging contact with social work case manager or advocate

Emotional
Telling them no one else will want them; calling them names i.e., ugly gimp; telling them “you’d be better off dead;” withholding medication

Punishing or ridiculing her; refusing to speak or ignoring her requests; using a negative reinforcement program

Minimizing, Denying and Blaming
Denying or making light of the abuse; blaming her disability for the abuse;

Denying her physical or emotional pain; justifying rules that limit autonomy and dignity; excusing abuse as behavior management

Using Children
Threatening to get custody if she tries to leave; threatening to report her to social workers so that children will be removed

Male or Caregiver Privilege
Speaking down to her; treating her like a child, telling her what she can eat and wear; telling a blind woman she dressed like a prostitute; telling her she is lucky to have him

Treating her as a child or servant; making unilateral decisions; denying right to privacy; providing care in a way to accentuate her dependence and vulnerability

Economic
Forcing her to sign over checks; telling her she cannot support herself; not allowing her access to money

Using person’s property and money for self; stealing money; making financial decisions without her consent; limiting access to financial; pressuring person to engage in fraud

Physical Abuse
Withholding a wheelchair, forcing her to slide along the floor; hitting, kicking, biting, punching, slapping, dragging by hair; putting something in the path of a blind person; abandoning her in a dangerous situation

Withholding food, heat, care; failing to follow medical, physical therapy or safety recommendations; missing medical appointments, not reporting serious symptoms or changes; hitting, slapping;

Sexual Abuse
Making her do sexual things against her will; telling her if she doesn’t have sex he will leave her; physically attacking the sexual parts of her body; treating her like a sex object

Being rough with intimate body parts; forcing sex against wishes; taking advantage of physical of developmental disability to engage in sex

Withholding sex because she is "too sick" or unable and blaming her for it

Note. Whereas the battered women’s movement has drastically improved the intervention services available for non-disabled women - with increased shelter beds, criminal justice intervention systems, legal advocacy for individual women, police and prosecutor training, and a host of other initiatives - the same cannot be said for this more vulnerable population. In her discussion of a hate crime for violence against people with disabilities, Waxman (Waxman, 1991) summarizes the complex nature of the problem:
Yet, they used the sacred text politically, not religiously, after realizing that many Christians would support their movement based on what is in the Old Testament, and they succeeded in this. Over time, they managed to convince the religious among them (e.g. the evangelical Christians) that the 'colonization of Palestine' is a religious duty, even though their goal was never to establish a religious state. Rather, it has always been a colonial project, similar, especially with colonial expansion on different continents, to other colonial projects carried out by Europeans, particularly by those groups who felt unwelcome, had issues they wanted to escape, or whose remaining, for one reason or another, posed a threat to them. Therefore, they decided to build a new life on someone else's land, similar to Europe, which had rejected them. In the case of Palestine, they chose land in the heart of the Arab and Islamic world, where human citizens lived, but they did not care, because the Zionist movement believed from the beginning that it had the right to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians and remove them in order to build a state. Shlomo Sand, a professor at Tel Aviv University, like Babié, Benny Morris, Simha Flapan, and Avi Shlaim, is among the Israeli historians who challenged the traditional narratives of Israeli history and debunked the myths of Israel's founding, relying on government sources declassified thirty years after Israel's establishment, especially after in-depth archaeological research carried out over decades. He asserts that there is no evidence in Jerusalem or Palestine of the existence of Solomon's or David's Temple, or of something called Israel, or a people or land of Israel. Consequently, it was no easy task for Shlomo Sand to refute the founding myths of Zionism and Israel in his books 'When and How Was the Land of Israel Invented?' and 'When and How Was the Jewish People Invented?', as well as in the book 'How I Stopped Being Israeli?', in which he denied the existence of a Jewish people who were forced to leave their homeland for the diaspora, and affirmed that most Eastern European Jews are descendants of communities and individuals who converted to Judaism during various historical periods. Due to his books, 'Sand' is subjected to hatred and continuous threats of death, and his consolation is that his book 'When and How Was the Jewish People Invented?' has been translated into more than twenty languages, including Arabic and Chinese.
<p class="MsoNormal" dir="RTL" style="direction: rtl; Mostly it made me want to travel. But I was also kind of fascinated by the whole meditation part. We are told to meditate in scripture, but I don't know many people who do it. I didn't. It seemed too new-agey for me. But I decided to try it. At that time I was so burdened by life. There were so many questions and so much waiting and so much on my shoulders and weighing me down inside and out. And I'd already learned the hard way to not ignore the stress, but to deal with it. And what better way than to slow down and meditate? So one morning after Arrty went to work and the kids were still asleep, I sat on my bed and closed my eyes and tried to block out all my thoughts of to do lists and human worries. I breathed and focused and breathed some more.

And suddenly I was standing in the presence of God! I was there before the Creator of the world but I couldn't run to him and throw my arms around His neck like I wanted to! Because my hands were full of stuff. Crazy stuff like cups and books and papers. And hanging on my arms were bags of more stuff. On my back were backpacks full of who knows what. There was even stuff tied to my legs and trailing behind me. I wanted to talk to Him, but I kept dropping all my stuff. And I was so worried about stopping and picking up and balancing all the stuff. I felt helpless. And embarrassed. And I didn't know what to do. So I looked up at Him and I didn't have to say a word. In an instant, He knew my heart and mind and soul. And He looked at me and said, "Jen, put it all down. Put all the stuff down. Just let everything go."

Then I opened my eyes. It felt like a really clear dream...but more than a dream. My heart was pounding and my eyes were wet with tears. I was a little shaken. It was so real. And true. After that I was able to put some of my stuff down. And my heart and soul were lighter. And even now, when I start to feel overwhelmed, I remember and am able to put the stuff down. Because He told me I needed to. And so I choose not to carry the things that weigh me down. And I am better for it.

Was it a dream? Was it more? I choose to believe the latter. And because of that, I am better. Which is what God does for anyone who chooses Him. He make us better.

I wrote this post in February of 2013, but never posted it. Now, almost 3 years later, I feel like a different person. I can let go so much easier. And I'm glad to say that so many of those burdens that I held that day are gone. He took them or I dropped them with His help. Either way, my walk is lighter.

I remember this experience like it was yesterday. It really did change me, as strange as it might seem. I still often hear His voice telling me to "put it down" and see His face smiling His patient and kind smile. I have to admit that I haven't purposefully meditated since that day, but I do often imagine myself at the feet of God when I pray. And now, whenever I hear Him speak to me, He calls me Jen. 2016/01/god-calls-me-jen.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-4087114914753040706Mon, 18 May 2015 20:56:00 +00002015-05-18T13:56:25.818-07:001435 years ago today, Mt. St. Helens erupted in Oregon and forever changed the landscape of miles and miles of the northwest.

And 14 years ago today, my middle baby was born and forever changed the landscape of my heart.

This kid. This kid is indescribable. He's just someone you've got to meet to begin to understand. But here's my best shot at describing him.
He is hilarious and has been from the beginning.
He's smart in so many ways, which makes his funny that much funnier.
He is sensitive. He cares about people and their feelings.
He absolutely can't fathom why one human being would hurt another.
He is single-minded. Once he gets something in his head, it is not budging...and neither is he.
He loves football! Like crazy loves football! Watching, playing, studying, learning...and he's determined to play in the NFL. (I hope he makes it because he's promised to pay me back the $175 I spent on him to play junior tackle last season when he gets signed.)
He's a good big brother and plays with his little sister even though he might rather be doing something else. He's a good little brother but don't tell him I said so. He'll deny it.
He is handsome...blonde hair, blue eyes, and a smile that can melt any heart.
Some people think he's quiet...he's not.
He loves to have fun. He's always wanted everything to be fun, much to his mama's chagrin at times.
He can simultaneously make me laugh and want to ground him for all eternity.
He says that pretty much every meal I cook is his favorite meal ever. And says thank you after eating it.
He has been shown numerous times how to do his own laundry, but inexplicably still can't do it.
He is taller than me and loves to remind me of that fact every day.
He is the apple of my eye and my own little volcano.

Happy birthday, Adam. I love you with every ounce of my being.

2015/05/35-years-ago-today-mt.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-3247166123143010364Wed, 22 Oct 2014 17:35:00 +00002014-10-22T10:35:16.785-07:00Jake and Piper

I fully admit that I'm not really an animal person. If I come to your house and you have a pet, I will give it an obligatory pat and move on. I will not pick it up or encourage a relationship of any kind with it. Don't get me wrong. I love animals in general and am fascinated by God's creatures. I just don't feel a bond or responsibility to treat them like a person. (Sorry, animal people.) Unless, apparently, it's my own pets.

I've discovered over the last twelve hours that I can in fact form a bond with animals...if they live at my house. Last night when I got home, I found out that our dogs, Jake and Piper, had once again escaped their pen. They have a rather large area to run and play, but every once in a while they like to run off for an adventure. They hadn't gotten out for a long time since Arrty and the boys had fortified their fence. But Monday night Jake started barking like crazy and trying with all his might to get out. I figured that there must be a wild animal in the woods by our house and Jake wanted to get to it...probably to play. Both dogs finally pushed through the gate. They ran on to the porch and we put them back in the pen and Josh fixed it so that it couldn't be pushed open so easily. But then last night at the same time, Jake wanted out again. They were able to find a way through a weak spot in the fence and went on their way without us knowing. Arrty called the sheriff's office to report them missing at about 6:00 and drove around looking for them with no luck. At 11:00 we got a call that two dogs had been hit by a car about a mile from our house and that they fit our dogs' descriptions. Arrty drove up there and sure enough, it was them. Both hit. Both gone.

I'm sad about it. Sadder than I expected to be. I confess that I said just recently that once Jake and Piper were gone, I'd never get another pet. But I thought it would be a while. Jake was ten years old, but still healthy and active. We got him when he was two months old and he was the cutest little chocolate lab puppy ever. Piper was about five years old. We adopted her from the shelter when she was eight months old. She was border collie/beagle and was so sweet and helped keep Jake young. Losing both of them at the same time is terrible. Just sad and terrible.

The kids are doing okay with it. And I'm doing okay this morning. Arrty is the one having to deal with the aftermath and taking care of them, so he's having a harder time. Keep us in your thoughts today and give your pets an extra pat for me.

<img src="; />

<img src="; />

<img src="; />

2014/10/jake-and-piper.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-2501471100388492950Thu, 22 May 2014 20:22:00 +00002014-05-22T13:22:03.223-07:0010 Things Thursday10 things that were most definitely NOT invented by teachers.

1. Silky shoe laces. When a student walks in and excitedly shows me his new shoes, on the outside I tell him how cool they are, but on the inside I am evaluating the laces and calculating how many times per day I will have to tie them. It seems to me, after all these years of wearing shoes, humans should be able to invent a lace that will stay tied.

2. Double layered coats. Sure, they are warm and those layers might come in handy if you need to take them apart to have a lighter jacket. But from experience I can tell you that those layers do not work for little kids. The sleeves get all jimmy-jacked every time they take their coat off. Every. Single. Time. And fixing them is too complicated for little hands. So at this point, I am an expert on the sleeve adjustment process.

3. Gogurt wrappers. Gogurt itself is genius. Yogurt that you can suck out of a tube and don't need a spoon for?! Perfect! It's the wrappers that are the problem. The "tear here" message and slit is too small or too high or nonexistent on at least 75% of wrappers. That is why I have a pair of "gogurt scissors" on my desk.

4. Apple sauce cups, pudding cups, and fruit cups. Again, good idea in theory. But the little tab that is supposed to be there to lift and pull is usually too small for little fingers. And so you know what they do? They try to use their teeth. And then when that fails, they ask the teacher to open it. And she has to make a new rule that if it's been in a mouth she will not open it. Or she caves and does it anyways and gets kindergarten spit all over her hands and has to wash her hands one million times per day.

5. Scented markers. Not a good idea at all. First they smell them and have polka dotted noses. Then then taste them. They taste the markers, people!

6. Fancy pencils. There is always a fight about who gets the sparkly pencil or the one with kittens or the one with stars. Shoot, they even fight over the one with the gold metal band at the top instead of the silver metal band. It's true.

7. Fleece lined gloves. It takes about three recesses for the thumbs of lined gloves to become impossible to get a thumb into. The lining only matches up in the fingers for that long. Then they might as well be mittens.

8. Pizza lunchables. This is the messiest (and grossest) of the lunchable family. No teacher in her right mind would give a five year old a plastic packet of tomato sauce and a cup of grated cheese and expect anything less than floor to ceiling mess.

9. Plastic zippers. They stick. They break. They split. And then the kid is stuck in the jacket. Or has to figure out how to get in and out of it with it zipped. It can be done, but it's not easy.

10. Light up shoes. Because all a bunch of 5 year olds needs is another reason to jump and kick things. Light up shoes are toys. On feet. That the teacher can't confiscate and put in the "confiscated toy drawer." Thanks for that, shoe makers. Can't you use your powers for good...like inventing shoe laces that stay tied?!2014/05/10-things-thursday.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-136192890002000097Fri, 11 Apr 2014 20:19:00 +00002014-04-11T13:19:30.621-07:00ExtremeI always wonder about people who put bumper stickers on their cars. I tend to think that they are people who talk a lot. Share everything. Discuss politics and religion and all those things that you have to be careful with in mixed company. Maybe that's not true of bumper sticker people. Maybe it is. I really don't know, because come to think of it, I don't think I know anyone who has a bumper sticker on their car.

I often read bumper stickers and try to figure out what kind of person drives that car. Sometimes the stickers make me laugh. Or think. But mostly I wonder what in the world someone was thinking when they stuck that sticker on their car. There are bumper stickers that I dislike. The ones that insult politicians...whether I voted for them or not. The ones that put down other people's beliefs...whether those beliefs are mine or not. The ones that use bad language...because little kids who are learning to read, read everything...and big kids read everything, too.

Today I saw a bumper sticker on a big, green truck today that said, "Extremely Rightwing." Really? Just what does that mean? And just what does this person want me to think about them? Am I supposed to make assumptions about their political beliefs? Am I supposed to honk if I agree...or if I don't? Should I assume that we couldn't be friends...or that we could be best friends? Am I expected to be moved to become extremely rightwing, too? I just don't know what the purpose of such a bumper sticker is.

Maybe I just don't understand being extremely anything when it comes to politics. I'm slightly on the right, I suppose. But I'm okay with those who aren't. If you and I were having a conversation about something and you asked me my opinion, I'd tell you. But the person driving behind me down the highway or stopped behind me at a stoplight, do they really care what I think? I don't think so.

There are some things in my life that I feel extreme about. I feel extremely protective of my children. My inner mama bear is lying, ready to pounce on anything that threatens my cubs. And I am extreme about the love I have for my husband. After 22 years, it is a comfortable, safe love. One that will last forever because we are both extremely dedicated to the life we've made together. I am extremely thankful for my family, the ones who live under my roof and the ones who don't. We are extremely blessed to have each other and the relationships we share. I am extremely happy about the sister-friends God has put in my life. These girls are the best...really, the absolute best. I am extremely loved by God, Creator of the universe. And I try to love Him extremely in return.

So, yes. Extreme exists in my world, I suppose. I guess I just feel like "extreme" should be reserved for kind, loving, good things. Things that unite us as people. Things that divide us should not be extreme. They should be...what's the opposite of extreme? Mild, moderate, slight? Or even less? Is being rightwing uniting or dividing? I'd have to ask someone who is to know for sure. Are my extremes uniting? I hope so.

So if you ever see a bumper sticker that says all of that, let me know. Maybe I'll stick that one on my minivan. But probably not, because I'm not really a bumper sticker kind of girl.2014/04/extreme.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-4020991226798168192Mon, 03 Feb 2014 22:12:00 +00002014-02-03T14:12:28.732-08:00Really?! Boxes?A few months ago, Arrty was reading a book given to him by his boss. It's called "Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting Out of the Box." Sounds exciting, right? Well, when he was almost finished with it, he asked me if I'd read it when he was done. He said it was really good and would be good for me to read. Uh-oh. I told him that maybe I would while secretly figuring he'd forget about it and I would escape reading a book with both "leadership" and "self-deception" in the title. But he didn't forget. And every time he saw me reading something new, he'd ask me if I'd read his book yet. No. No, I hadn't. Even though there was a really sweet pink post it on the front that said, "Jen, please read. I love you!" Really?! Leadership? Self-deception? Mysterious boxes that I should get out of? I had absolutely no desire to read it. So I didn't. Until finally I did. Arrty noticed a new book that I had begun reading and asked me again about his book. I told him I didn't want to read it. I don't like non-fiction. There were so many other things I wanted to read instead. But then he pulled out the big guns. He reminded me that I read all kinds of books that my friends give me. Why wouldn't I read the one he gave me? After briefly considering "losing" his book, I realized that he was right. Sigh. I wasn't being fair.

So later that evening, I sheepishly went into the bedroom and picked up the book. It's written like a conversation between a man and his boss. Not your typical leadershippy style of writing. And I was getting through it pretty quickly, which was helpful. But then something strange happened. I started to get it. The whole thing about the leadership and the self-deception and the boxes. I was getting it. If I tried to tell you about it, I wouldn't get it right, so I'll just give you the gist. Every person that we come in contact with just wants to be seen as the person they are. But many of us, me included, often see people as objects that are getting in our way...on the roads, in line at the store, at our workplaces. But if we thought about others as people with their own hopes and dreams and goals and not deceive ourselves into thinking that our hopes and dreams and goals are more important than theirs, we'd all be better off. The guy driving too slowly in the fast lane might have had a recent car accident and is anxious about driving and is in the fast lane to avoid having to change lanes at his exit. The lady in line at the store who is using 23 coupons and is taking forever maybe only has enough money to pay for her groceries if she uses all those coupons. And the workplace...which for me is filled with 5 year olds...can be especially challenging. Every shoe I tie. Every question I answer. Every hand I guide to perfect letter writing. Every single one represents a person. A person someone loves and cherishes like I do my own children. A person with hopes and dreams and goals...and bright futures. And more than that, a soul on his or her journey through this life. Wow! That's big!

And all of this also translates to family relationships. Do I treat those I live with as their own person or do I let my needs/desires/selfishness get in the way and allow myself to see them as a hindrance. This hit me like a ton of bricks when I thought about it. Do I? I know I love my family with every fiber of my being. I cook and clean and shop for them. I spend what seems like every ounce of my energy on them. But do I deceive myself into thinking that my actions justify my feelings. Oh. My. Goodness. It was put to the test a few days after finishing the book.

If you know me at all, you probably know that I hate homework. Hate it. I give my students very little and only that so that their parents can see what they're learning. But the school the boys go to does not share my aversion to homework. So the boys have at least math every night. If you read my post about Adam, you already know he has some trouble with focus, so for him, homework is a long, drawn out fight to the finish. Sometimes he wins. Sometimes I win. But really we both lose, because four nights a week pretty much all he does all evening is math and pretty much all I do is sit with him so that he can focus enough to get it finished. When I was thinking about the way I treat my family, this situation came to mind. Because I know, I know, that in the past I've felt very bitter about having to do homework instead of my own chores or reading or playing Bubble Shooter. And I've said so...loudly. If only he'd get more done at school. If only he could focus more. I blamed him. Or his teacher. If only she'd give them time in class to work. If only she'd give them fewer problems. If THEY would only change, MY evenings would be so much easier. Now if that isn't self-deception, I don't know what is. So that night, when I wanted to huff and puff about homework, I took a deep breath and thought about how Adam is my child, whom I love with all my heart. Not about the books or the time or the what ifs. And guess what? We finished his homework without anyone screaming or crying.

This new way of thinking has carried over into all areas of my life. Now if I begin to get frustrated or impatient, I think of my box and that whoever is standing in my way is a person, not an object. It has helped me slow down and think through my feelings and actions. It's not easy. As a matter of fact, I texted Arrty one day shortly after finishing the book, "Dang boxes! I like my boxes! I don't want to be nice!" His reply, "Crickets." As in, "I'm just going to be quiet about that." I guess he has learned a thing or two over the last 21 years, after all.

If there's one thing in this world that we have to deal with every single day of our lives, it's other people. And it's hard. But it can be easier. By getting out of my "me" box and thinking of others as people, souls, I have been more able to be patient and kind like I should be. Like I want to be.

2014/02/really-boxes.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-8687652264339615660Thu, 30 Jan 2014 22:40:00 +00002014-01-30T14:48:02.666-08:00Why I May Never Go To Another Secular Concert

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="171" width="320" />

On Saturday night, January 11th, I took Josh, Adam, and their friend Sam to the <a href=" and Worship Roadshow in Spokane. (Arrty was going to go, but had to stay home and play Noah in the flooded basement.) I bought the tickets for the boys for Christmas and we were all excited about it. But I have to admit, that once the time actually rolled around I was wondering if it wasn't meant to be. There was the flooded basement and backyard. There was the driving to Spokane in 5:00 traffic. There was the taking three teenage boys to a sold out arena by myself. All of those things were enough to make me second guess my decision. But the boys were excited about going and under all the anxiety about it, I really wanted to go, too.

So we loaded up the van and headed west. The line to get into the parking lot was long and slow. We decided to park at the back of the parking lot and walk to the arena. Which was the right idea, because the rest of the parking lot was crazy. Once we got in and found our seats I had time to take a breath and take it all in. I know that there are bigger arenas than the one in Spokane, but there are a lot of people in there at a sold out show. A lot of people. Which led to some deep breathing and self talk to keep myself calm. Once I located all the exits, formed a plan of escape if I needed it, and convinced myself that I wouldn't go deaf from one concert even though I forgot my earplugs, I relaxed.

And now here's the part where I began to realize that I may never again go to a secular concert. The show started with a prayer. At which time I recalled the verse from Matthew that says,

"And when two or three of you are together because of me, you can be sure that I’ll be there.”

Well, there were certainly two or more of us gathered. And we were there because of Jesus. So, guess what! He was there. Maybe he was the guy sitting next to me. Or the little old lady three rows down. Or the teenage girl in front of me. Or maybe he was just everywhere. In every heart. And His peace that passes understanding came over me in a group of thousands of people where I would have normally been fighting a panic attack the whole time. He was there.

When the show started, I admit that I did wonder what I had gotten myself into. The first band, <a href=" As Human*, was loud. And hard. And I confess to asking Jesus right then and there how he felt about that. But then I listened harder to try to hear the words through the noise. And there He was...Jesus. And no matter what it sounds like, He loves to hear us sing His name. And throughout the night I continued to be convicted that everyone, no matter how they look or what they wear or how they choose to praise the Lord, every single person is loved by Jesus unconditionally and completely. And any one of those people is free to love Him in return.

After that, the night just kept getting better and better. The second band was <a href=" Neverclaim. They have kind of a southern rock sound. And I could understand most of the lyrics, which was a plus. Their song <a href=" Jesus is amazing! That's when I finally knew I was in the right place.

Next was <a href=" Tailor. I kept thinking that they were the "boy band" of the bunch. There was even a moment of synchronized dance moves. They were really good, too. And I was surprised to learn after the concert that they were among my boys' favorites of the night.

Before or after Royal Tailor (my memory is foggy from the extreme volume), was <a href=" Mineo. A hip-hop, skateboarding, rapping artist from New York. He rode his skateboard on stage which was really weird when I couldn't see his feet but just him floating across the stage. He rapped about Jesus. And he jumped about Jesus. And he had thousands of us in the audience doing it, too! Josh especially liked him since he is the hip-hop fan in our house.

Then we saw a worship team from Columbia called <a href=" Revolution. They had a unique sound and a more intimate performance on just the front of the stage.

One of the headliners was <a href=" Day. I had heard a few of their songs on Christian radio and had certainly heard of the band, but didn't really know what to expect live. I was pleasantly surprised by their performance. They were easily my favorite band of the night. The lead singer has the kind of voice I like to listen to. Deep and smooth with a little bit of a growl. And their whole sound was perfect for me. And then they did a short acoustic set while the stage was being reset. When they led the audience in an acoustic/acapella version of Blessed Assurance, I was sold. I loved it so, so much. Gotta love the acapella!

The last act of the night was <a href=";. (First of all, where did they get their name. I must google it.) Skillet rocks! That's all I can say. In every sense of the word. I'm usually not a big fan of the hard alternative style of music, but there's something about Skillet that made me okay with it. They are great performers, too. They had a violinist and cello player who were amazing. And a stage with sections that would rise with different performers standing on them. Lights and smoke created a real "rock" atmosphere. I think I will check out some more of their music soon.

So now back to the reasons why I may never go to another secular concert.

Reason 1: Prayer. Nothing makes me feel more like I belong than prayer. And I can honestly say that I've never felt like I belonged at most of the other concerts I've gone to. But I belonged that night. We were all there for the same reason: to rock and worship.

Reason 2: Worship. I can't even explain the feeling of worshiping with thousands of people. It had less to do with the music or the singers than with the presence of God being there. You don't get that at secular concerts.

Reason 3: Security. I didn't have to worry about what was going to flash on the screens for my teenage sons to see. Or what was going to be blasted at them from the speakers. I'm not naive. I know what's in the world. But I will try, for however long I can, to let them be kids and keep them, when it's in my power, from being bombarded with worldly sights and sounds.

Reason 4: Safety. I didn't have to worry about the people around me. Knowing that we were all brothers and sisters gave me a sense of safety that made my night easier. And since they weren't selling beer, I didn't have to worry about having it spilled on me by the guy sitting behind me. (It's happened before.)

Reason 5: Jesus. That's reason enough for me.

All in all, the night was a roaring success. The boys had a ball and I was encouraged to see that all kinds of people who praise God in all kinds of ways are all in this whole Christianity thing together. All of us Third Day people can stand beside the We As Human people the Andy Mineo people and worship together. And isn't that how it's supposed to be. Because I sure think it is.

*The way We As Human had their name written on their set was very hard to read. So until about halfway through the concert when I saw it written more clearly, I thought they were called Weashu Man. 2014/01/why-i-may-never-go-to-another-secular.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-5666943332727221532Sun, 05 Jan 2014 03:32:00 +00002014-01-04T19:32:57.774-08:00ResolvedI'm not really a resolution maker. I couldn't even tell you the last time I made new year's resolutions. But, I can look back at my journals for the last 20 years and see that I've had many of the same goals for all these years...live a healthier life, grow closer to God, be a better wife and mom. They have been, and will always be I suppose, my objectives in life. And over the last 20 years, I have become healthier (in some ways) and closer to God (in many ways) and a better wife and mom (most days). I admit that when I found 1995's journal and read what I'd written, I was discouraged. Really?! I STILL haven't reached those goals?! I'm STILL trying to be that person?! But I've come to realize that as long as I live, I will strive to meet those goals. I will always want to be healthier and holier and better. It's not a bad thing to have the same goals every year. Because will I ever be the best I can be? Not until Heaven. And if I can be just a little bit better as time goes by, I'll be happy.

So hello, 2014. Welcome to the world. I can't wait to see what adventures we'll share.2014/01/resolved.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-3837936264000661301Wed, 13 Nov 2013 21:43:00 +00002013-11-13T13:43:00.148-08:00Dear WorldDear World,

You may not have noticed my son, Adam, yet. He hates to be the center of attention, so it's okay that you haven't noticed him. He likes it that way. But I want you to know more about him before you do. Because he's a special kid, my middle child. I've known a lot of kids in my life and career and have never known one quite like him.

He's highly sensitive. And I don't mean that in the way you might think. I mean it in the personality type way. There are people, 15-20% of people in fact, who have this type of personality. Adam is one of them. That means that his senses are heightened in every way. Bright lights are brighter. Loud noises louder. A little poke, very painful. He is extremely prone to car sickness and gets nauseous even on straight roads. (But strangely he loves roller coasters. The faster the better!) Ironically, he has a very high tolerance for some pain and barely made it to the emergency room for an appendectomy before his appendix burst because he didn't want to complain and be any trouble.

Highly sensitive people notice everything around them so are often easily distracted and seem to lack focus. That's not what it seems, though. He can be extremely focused on the things that are important to him. It's just not always what I, or you, World, think should be important. Please take time to see what he sees. Because frankly, he sees way more than most of the rest of us.

Regardless of distractions, he is a perfectionist. When he was in my kindergarten class, I could not figure out why the slightest mistake could cause a major meltdown. It was the perfectionism. And take it from me, a non-perfectionist, perfectionism in others can be very, very frustrating. Sometimes I just want him to get the job done. It doesn't have to be perfect! But just try telling him that. The upside is that if you are patient, whatever he is doing will be done well.

He is very intuitive. He can read other people's feelings much better than the average 12 year old...often better than the average 40 year old. Sometimes it's like he can read my mind. He knows what I'm thinking about the most random things. Once when I was going to get money out of the ATM for vacation, he knew how much I was going to get. The weird thing was, I didn't even know how much I was going to get until I got there. I had been debating in my head about how much we'd need and finally settled on $300. When he saw the amount, he said, "Mom, that's weird, I knew you were going to get $300." Weird indeed. Things like that happen often between he and I. He has also started experiencing frequent deja vu. I don't know if that has anything to do with his sensitivity, but I think it might.

He is also very clever and has an amazingly mature sense of humor...always has. When he was about three years old, he was in the bath and every time I pulled the plug, he'd close it so that he could play longer. After about the third time, I said, "Adam, if you close that again, you're going to get a spanking." To which he replied, "No closing costs, Mom." Really? No closing costs? He was three! (And had apparently seen way too many mortgage commercials.) That's just one example of many I could share about his unique sense of humor.

He is a thinker and has always been a child who asks questions way beyond his age. A lot of questions. He asks questions about the state of the world and God and other people. And he truly wants to know and cares about the answer. Sometimes his thinking leads to worry, which is, well, worrisome. I don't want him to worry when he's 12. At least not about things he has no control over. I try to encourage him to let me be the adult and to enjoy being a kid.

He is ultra-sympathetic. He hates to see people, or any creature really, suffer in any way. Even when he was very young, he would give up things to keep his brother happy. And he goes out of his way to make sure other's feelings don't get hurt. But if they do, he hurts for them. I love that about him. But, World, you might use that against him. Don't. We all need people who protect those who need protection. Embrace that about him.

He can become obsessive. Whatever it is that he is into at the time will fill his mind and rule his thoughts for as long as he is interested. I've learned to accept that about him. I might find Halo guys extremely unimportant, but he finds them fascinating. So I listen to the description of each one and try my hardest to appreciate what he appreciates.

He is a rule follower and a truth teller. Things are black and white to him. He has a hard time understanding why others can't just follow the rules. They're the rules for a reason. If he hears about someone doing something terrible in the world, it hurts his heart. He feels for the hurt ones and just can't understand why anyone would want to hurt others. Even when doing current events for his history class, he looks for news stories that are good or uplifting. Nothing about devastation, please.

Not until just recently while reading the book, <a href=" Highly Sensitive Child by Elaine Aron, did I realize how very special Adam is. I've always known he was different than my other children and all the children who have been a part of my life. Not bad or good, just different. Imagine my surprise when I learned that there are millions of people just like him in the world. And most don't even know that there are others like them. So, World, watch out for these special souls. Treat them with gentleness and understanding. They won't be the ones on center stage (although they make good actors because of their sympathetic and intuitive natures). They will be the ones working to make a better world because they truly care about others. They will be the ones finding cures for diseases because they are single minded in their interests. They will be the thinkers and planners and fighters for justice. And one of these special people is my Adam. So watch out, World, because when you do finally notice him, you'll never be the same.

Sincerely,
Adam's Mom

2013/11/dear-world.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jen)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37148346.post-5898706796271444748Thu, 10 Oct 2013 21:48:00 +00002013-10-10T14:48:26.027-07:0010 Things Thursday--Josh Edition10 things about Josh on his 14th birthday.

1. He was born on the first day of elk hunting season. I called my dad just as he was leaving for hunting that day 14 years ago to tell him that he might want to wait. That was the 9th. Josh wasn't born until the 10th. Dad waited...but went hunting on the 11th.
2. Since he was born on the first day of elk season, I knew it was only a matter of time before he spent his birthdays in the woods instead of with me. This is the fourth year that that's been true. (I'm not as okay with it as I pretend to be.)
3. He has one of those magnetic personalities that cause people to want to be his friend. He's always been kind of a charmer.
4. He finally likes school. After about the first week at his new school, he declared that "school's not so bad." That's as good as it's gonna get, I think. (He's still not crazy about the work, though.)
5. He's taller than me. He loves to stand next to me and remind me of that fact often. Honestly, I'm glad. If he was shorter than me, he'd be really short.
6. He loves all things fishing and hunting. He wants to be a professional fisherman when he grows up.
7. He has a great laugh. Just hearing him laugh, makes me laugh.
8. He is the epitome of "a growing boy." He's always hungry and seems to grow an inch everyday.
9. He was my guinea pig baby. By the time Adam came around, I was an expert compared to when Josh was born. I'd barely even held babies, no less kept them alive.
10. The day he was born was the day part of my heart began to walk around outside my body. And now, 14 years later, that still holds true...only 14 times stronger.

Happy birthday, Yosh. Comments for Abu Yehuda A blog about the struggle to keep the Jewish state Mon, 25 Aug 2025 12:28:23 +0000 hourly 1 Comment on Now What? by Hava Goldman /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2174 Mon, 25 Aug 2025 12:28:23 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2174 Welcome back, Victor! Certain web sites have been pointing out that Israel has been secretly providing information to countries in danger from terrorism. We should still be collecting that info, but not freely handing it out to people who oppose us. Also, you might want to read the work of one Professor Emerita Anjuli Pandavar, if you haven’t already. She is a murtadd (apostate from Islam) and knows her way around how to deal with them. Her site is Murtadd to Human. Comment on Now What? by William Bilek /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2173 Sat, 02 Aug 2025 21:29:00 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2173 In reply to Victor Rosenthal. To date, there has never been a legally binding verdict handed down regarding settlements, the security fence, the “occupation”, etc. If the ICJ hands down a verdict that Israel is a genocidal state, denial on our part will become much more difficult. As for sanctions, they do not have to come from the UNSC. Even today, many countries have cut off arms sales. Individual states could end all commerce, boycott Israeli goods, and forbid Israeli tourists from entering their countries. I remain very concerned. Comment on Now What? by Victor Rosenthal /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2172 Sat, 02 Aug 2025 08:34:08 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2172 In reply to nudnikJR. Unfortunately, you’re right that since the days of Ben Gurion Israel has tended to back down in the face of Western pressure. Comment on Now What? by Victor Rosenthal /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2171 Sat, 02 Aug 2025 08:32:43 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2171 In reply to William Bilek. I don’t know what you mean by “legally binding verdict of the ICJ”. What could they do to us? Although the UN Charter says UN members have to obey its decisions, the court has no enforcement power of its own. It would have to appeal to the UN Security Council, where the Trump administration would veto any sanctions. If an Obama-type administration were to take over, we would have bigger problems. Trump has so far been pretty consistent on these issues, at least for him. Comment on Now What? by Victor Rosenthal /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2170 Sat, 02 Aug 2025 08:23:41 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2170 In reply to Lrbenj. Egypt should be forced to take refugees from the war. They get big bucks from the US and natural gas from Israel at a good price. We have leverage and we should use it. Comment on Now What? by nudnikJR /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2169 Sat, 02 Aug 2025 03:01:09 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2169 Hello Victor, It’s great to read your essays again. It’s been a long while. You have made a number of sensible strategic suggestions for Israel to undertake. However, in my opinion, she will do none of these things. I speak from some experience having lived in Israel for over ten years and three wars (counting the War of Attrition). Israel has never undertaken a strategic move; they have all been tactical and Israel has caved every time to external pressure. As a nation it does not have the cojones to pursue a war to its end. Everyone knows that Hamas will never release all the hostages, but Israel continues with the charade of keeping that as a non-negotiable war aim. When has one side provided “humanitarian” aid to the enemy, especially in a war of defense? Only Israel. When will she emulate Farragut with his “damn the torpedoes; full steam ahead!” or even Curtis “Bombs away” LeMay? Never! When will she tell the “international community”, Israel haters and fellow travellers to stuff it? Never! The sad part is that the Second Israel is capable of doing these things, but they don’t call the shots in the country. First Israel is still in power and they want appeasement above all else, so they can be invited and accepted in all the “correct” places like Davos, the UN etc. Trumpo has told Israel to get on with it but she is doing a great impersonation of Mr. Dithers! Comment on Now What? by Cassandra /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2168 Fri, 01 Aug 2025 19:13:16 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2168 I completely agree with you. PM Netanyahu should be preparing a speech before the UN General Assembly in which he reminds the world that all the “disputed” territories are Israel’s and that Israel is no longer willing to trade any of it for peace it never gets. He should insist that the Arabs currently occupying, and making claims on, Israel’s territories must relocate, as they refuse to live in peace next to Israel. He should cite examples of conflicts that used the relocation of populations to end the fighting, so that anyone claiming “ethnic cleansing” will be seen as employing a double standard to condemn Israel. Netanyahu should insist that, just as the world demanded the US and South Africa end their racially discriminatory practices, the world must now demand that Arab and Muslim countries, at the very least, reject the cultural values and beliefs that permit the use of violence against religious and racial minorities, such as the Jews of Israel. The Arabs lost the 1948 War. The world cannot be reduced to giving the Arabs a state as a booby prize to assuage their humiliation at losing a war against the Jews that they were sure they would win. Arabs and Islamists supported and adopted Nazi hatred of Jews, and it is long past time that they let go of those values and beliefs. I don’t see an end to the fighting, if Israel doesn’t finally come out and say: “You can’t treat Israel like you treated the Jews for centuries. We WILL be treated as equals, because the laws of nations we’ve all agreed to say we must. Comment on Now What? by William Bilek /2025/08/now-what-2/#comment-2167 Fri, 01 Aug 2025 09:25:50 +0000 /?p=3994#comment-2167 How will Israel handle the inevitable economic sanctions, almost universal BDS, and the political isolation? How will Israel handle the upcoming legally binding verdict of the ICJ labeling Israel a “genocidal state”? As for President Trump, I think I know what he believed 5 minutes ago. I have no idea what he will believe, and more importantly, do, 5 minutes from now. These are genuine questions and concerns, not simply rhetoric. I hope someone posts some concrete responses. Your blog is sorely missed. I hope that you and the family are well.
