There are so many restaurants with so many different kinds of foods from so many different countries, how can one be the best. Well, I’m here to tell you that when Ichiran Ramen says they’re the best ramen in New York City, it’s gonna be tough to prove them wrong. I was going to New York City for a work conference, and I was ready for a new, interesting experience. It’s tough to find something different in New York City because (See above) a lot of places lie to get tourists in the door. Add to it that the location I went to was the Times Square location, alarms were already going off in my head as a scam. But, thankfully, I went for it anyway. My theory in New York City, when you choose to dine at a restaurant with food from another country, is if people in the restaurant or in line are speaking the native language of the food in that restaurant, it’s a good tip that the food is decent. Apparently, I was the new kid in line, because everyone seemed to know the plan, except for me. You arrive to the counter where you order your food on a screen. It’s ramen, yes, but you can decide the spiciness and other things to potentially include. Then, you walk to your space facing a window. You hand the receipt you got from the counter to a person behind the window. You can’t see them; you just see hands. Everyone is speaking in Japanese, but there are translations around you so if you’re not fluent, you’re not totally confused. If you order a dessert (I did), they give you a little dish. When you’re done with your meal, you put that little dish on a designated space, and somehow, that tells the kitchen you’re ready. Everything I ate was amazing. The ramen? Best I’ve ever had. The dessert? Incredible. The experience? I won’t stop talking about it. It’s quite calming to be in a space where you don’t feel like you have to talk to anyone, or don’t feel odd for eating alone. Your back is to a room of people, but the experience is with you and the unknown people handing you food through a window. A lot of times these gimmicks are just that, but the experience, paired with how delicious the food is, makes this a place I can’t wait to visit again! With spring comes spring break. College goers are taking a break from their studies. Families set aside their differences to enjoy a nice vacation together. Many people opt to rent a vehicle for spring break, especially when driving long over distances.
The most common question is, "I have car insurance. Do I really need to purchase additional coverage from the rental company or agency?" The answer is...Well, it depends. "On what," you ask? Well, typically depending on your company, your liability and physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage will extend over to your rental vehicle. There are a few variables to explore though.

Your coverage will usually extend over if you are rental a vehicle similar in type, size, and value of your own vehicle. Let's say you own a 2010 Toyota Corolla, but you decided to go down to spring break a 2018 Maserati Granturismo Convertible, it might be a good idea to purchase additional coverage for this vehicle. Your auto insurance will not be enough to cover damages of this vehicle.

Many people assume their rental reimbursement coverage covers a rental vehicle for your spring vacation. Those people could not be more wrong. " Wait. Wait. Wait. Don't click off just yet. Let me explain rental reimbursement coverage. Rental reimbursement is an optional coverage that covers your rental vehicle when your vehicle is being repaired due to damaged caused by an auto accident, theft or vandalism, or severe weather damage. Just to name a few examples. It does cover rentals need if your vehicle is break down and needs to be repaired. It also does not cover a rental vehicle used for recreational purposes. It only covers the cost of a rental when your damages are covered by your comprehensive or collision coverage.

BUT....you may be able to save a few buck by not having to purchase an insurance package from the rental company.

We here at Budget Insurance Agency are here to provide you will all on your insurance needs. The freedom of being able to travel anywhere you want, whenever you want, and the ability to live off the grid in a self-contained mobile home has a lot of appeal. However, with this lifestyle comes the need for proper insurance coverage. In this blog post, we’ll explore the world of van life and insurance.

Van life is essentially living in a van or other recreational vehicle (RV) full-time. This lifestyle can range from weekend camping trips to year-round travel, and everything in between. Many people choose this lifestyle because of its affordability, mobility, and simplicity. However, living in a van also comes with its own set of challenges, such as finding places to park, dealing with maintenance and repairs, and ensuring you have proper insurance coverage.

When it comes to insurance, there are a few different types of coverage you’ll need to consider when living in a van. The first is liability insurance, which is required by law in most states. This type of insurance covers you in case you cause damage to someone else’s property or injure someone while driving your van. It’s important to note that liability insurance typically only covers other people, not you or your van.

The second type of insurance you’ll need to consider is comprehensive and collision coverage. This type of insurance covers damage to your van caused by accidents, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters. Comprehensive and collision coverage is not required by law, but it is highly recommended, especially if you’re living in your van full-time.

Another important type of insurance to consider is personal property coverage. This type of insurance covers your personal belongings inside your van, such as clothing, electronics, and furniture. Without personal property coverage, you could be left with nothing if your van is stolen or damaged.

Finally, you may also want to consider roadside assistance coverage. This type of insurance covers you in case you break down or have other issues while on the road. This can be especially important if you’re traveling long distances or in remote areas.

When shopping for insurance for your van, it’s important to look for a policy that is tailored to your specific needs. Some insurance companies offer specialized coverage for RVs, which may be a good option if you’re living in your van full-time. You should also consider the deductible amount, coverage limits, and any exclusions or restrictions that may apply.

In conclusion, living in a van can be a fulfilling and exciting lifestyle choice, but it also comes with its own set of challenges, including the need for proper insurance coverage. By considering the different types of coverage available and finding a policy that works for you, you can enjoy the freedom and adventure of van life with peace of mind.

Here When You Need Us

If you have any questions about car insurance in Georgia or need help, Contact O'Neal & Associates Insurance at 478-788-1104 or request an online quote right now!

urn:uuid:ba9d0b6b-8c20-452e-9cb4-ab4d7e8d0cd6homeowners-insurance-in-georgia.aspxHomeowners insurance in GeorgiaIf you're a homeowner in Georgia, it's important to protect your investment with the right insurance coverage. Dwelling coverage: This covers the cost of repairing or rebuilding your home in the event of damage from a covered event, such as a fire or storm.
2. Personal property coverage: This covers the cost of replacing your personal belongings, such as furniture, clothing, and electronics, in the event of damage or theft.
3. For some people, owning a minivan is safer for their families. However, with the cost of owning a car increasing over the years, many people are wondering whether owning a smaller car may be better.
Smaller Cars Aren’t as Safe as Other Cars
There are a lot of benefits to owning a small car, but safety isn’t one of them. Although car manufacturers are trying to enhance the safety features included in small cars, they simply can’t deny physics. If you are driving a smaller car and you collide with a bigger car or truck, you are simply better off in a bigger frame that’s heavier and resistant to rolling over.
Compact Cars don’t have Enough Room
Within the United States, the average size of families is 1.86 children, meaning most couples have at least one child. However, there are a large number of households who have multiple children; and as they grow, a compact car may become too cramped. With most people purchasing a car in the hope that it will last for years, a compact car isn’t often the first choice for families.
Save Money with Smaller Cars
Although safety is a motivating factor for many people, it’s not the only factor you may consider when you are buying a car. Most people like saving money, and that’s where smaller cars have the best advantage—they save you money. From the cost of purchasing the car to the cost of fuel to the cost of car insurance, there is no other type of vehicle that comes close to the cost-savings associated with owning a small car.
Compact Cars Are Environmentally Friendly
Of course, there is increasing concern for the environment and the effects cars have on the environment. If you share these concerns, then driving a small car may make sense to you. Smaller cars are more fuel efficient, so these cars may not emit as many pollutants back into the environment.

Obviously, there are both pros and cons to owning a compact car. Safety, one of the most prevailing reasons people choose a vehicle, is still questionable when it comes to compact cars. You are ready to decorate and move in, with little regard for your home insurance coverage. However, homeowners insurance protects your home. It also helps you increase the chances of you and your family returning to your home following an emergency.

Understanding Home Insurance

Home insurance works much like your car insurance, but it’s for your house. A home insurance policy can help you cover the costs of repairing or replacing your home if you experience a qualified loss. Qualified losses may include:

Fires

Theft

Weather-related damage

Vandalism

Of course, the type of coverage and the events that are covered under your policy may vary.

The Basics of Homeowners Insurance

Essentially, homeowners insurance is designed to help you financially if you experience a loss. As a result, there are certain matters concerning your home insurance you need to know to cover your investment thoroughly.

Dwelling coverage: A comprehensive home insurance policy provides you with dwelling coverage, which may help you cover the cost of rebuilding and repairing your home following a loss.

Personal property: Items included in your home are considered personal property. For instance, your furniture and your electronics are personal property.

Liability coverage: Although most policies don’t include much liability insurance, there is some included in the policy. This coverage may help you if a guest is injured at your home while visiting.

Deductible: Your deductible is the amount you pay to the insurance company following a loss. A deductible is an additional payment beyond your monthly premium. Once you pay your deductible, your insurance company will likely cover the rest of the costs, up to policy limits.

What’s Not Covered by Your Homeowners Insurance?

Of course, all home insurance policies are different, but it helps to know what isn’t covered by a traditional policy. When you know what’s not covered, you can purchase additional insurance to get the coverage you need for your home. The following are a few things may not be included in your coverage:

Damage from floods

Damage from earthquakes

Damage from war

Damage from risky behaviors

The best way to learn more about your home insurance policy is by talking with a qualified agent. They can assess your needs to ensure they quote the best policy and get you covered with just a short phone call.

Get the coverage you need.

Here When You Need Us

Don’t hesitate to get a homeowners insurance policy right now! Yes, the state of Georgia does require that every driver have at least liability coverage to cover others if they were to damage someone's vehicle or injure others, but the fact remains that people are still driving with no coverage. The state is getting very strict against these drivers but since these drivers are still out we still need to protect ourselves. Uninsured motorist coverage pays for injuries resulting from an accident with a driver that does not have liability coverage, or in the case of a hit and run accident. As for the car you have, Uninsured Motorist Property Damage, this pays for damages to your car by an uninsured driver.

Most people say that they can't afford to spend the few dollars that it takes to get these coverage but the truth is, you can't afford not to have this type of coverage. Let's take for example a guy by the name of Tom. Tom is hit by an uninsured driver, the accident severely damages his car. Tom is on a fixed income has no savings, does not have access to any other vehicles, plus he is hurt in the process. The Uninsured Motorist Bodily Injury portion will provide help for his medical expenses, and the the property damage portion would help him with getting his vehicle repaired with a lower deductible than he would most likely have if he had collision coverage. I always ask my customers, Now think for a second how you would react if you were hit by someone that damages your vehicle, or hurts you and your family in the process, and to top it all off turns out to not have any insurance? Many people can hardly afford their everyday expenses much less unexpected expenses. The good thing about this coverage is that it is a lot less expensive than having comprehensive and collision coverage.

Many people wait to late to ask about this coverage. Many people normally just think about the bottom line and just get liability coverage once their car becomes a certain age, but the truth is honestly you may be leaving yourself vulnerable to a financial disaster without this coverage.

Here When You Need Us

Don’t hesitate to get a quote on a personalized Georgia auto insurance policy right now! With a population of about 10.7 million people as of 2020 Census, Georgia has about 8.8 million registered cars and an average about annual 1,556 driving fatalities. Cars come with insurance costs that can be a burden if they are too costly. Here are five tips that will get you lower car insurance premiums.

  1. Cherish your good driving record
Cultivate a good driving record so that you are able to leverage that when negotiating for premiums. A good driving record will grant you a lower premium.

2. Opt for higher deductibles
When it comes to deductibles, you should go with the highest that you could afford. The trick with deductibles is that the payment lets you honor most of the risk that compels you to take insurance in the first place. You must therefore become extra careful with your driving and car protection efforts to limit any opportunistic occurrence of risk. Assuming that you are a careful driver, and live in a secure neighborhood with a car that has all security features installed, then you should enjoy low premium payments without much effect on the out-of-pocket costs.

3. Only pick what you need
You should only take the basic car insurance requirement for your case. For example, if you own a car whose value is very low i.e. less than $1000 then it makes no sense to pay for collision insurance. You are better off with only liability coverage since the cost of repairing the car may as well qualify for a new one. In the same way, owners of newer cars that attract a high resale value should look carefully at what they really need on the insurance cover. Sales people will always try to sell you more than you need so that they can earn higher commission. You need to look beyond this gimmick. Do extensive research. Ask your friends and neighbors who have similar cars about their experience with insurance needs and their answers will help you determine the type of cover that you need. In the end, you will be able to save on unnecessary expenses.

4. Name teenagers as occasional car users with no criminal record
When you are naming your teenagers as users of your car, make sure you indicate that they are occasional drivers. If they do not regularly use the car, then you will qualify for lower premiums. The industry treats teenage drivers as a higher liability risk compared to adult drivers. To lower this risk perception and attract lower premiums, you will need to keep your teenage driver away from any sort of police criminal record. Your insurer will rely on those records to establish the riskiness of your teenager. Ensure that your son or daughter keeps away from traffic tickets in Georgia at the very least.

5. Get a defensive-driving certification
Residents of Georgia have the option of taking up defensive driving courses that are approved by the National Safety Council. Once you have the certification, you can use it to negotiate for lower premiums. In essence, the certification shows that you are capable of avoiding common risk causes and therefore you are unlikely to have many claims in a year.

Remember, it is always the interest of the insurer to reduce the number of claims from its customers to remain in business. Go on and use the tips mentioned above to tilt the car insurance situation to your favor.

Here When You Need Us
Don’t hesitate to get a quote on a personalized Georgia auto insurance policy right now! Their actions may harm the trucker's business, as well as other drivers. If a trucker does not drive safely or ethically, they might put many different people at risk.

A common risk posed by drivers is the chance that they may drive under the influence of alcohol. Should a trucker face a DUI charge, this signifies that the trucker operated unprofessionally. Commercial truckers should be very careful to avoid these charges. DUIs may impact a trucker’s insurance rates and their ability to operate.

Penalties from DUI Charges

As a trucker, a driver has to make sure he or she completes their dispatch safely. If the driver takes unnecessary risks, he or she puts their business assets at risk also. Consuming alcohol and then operating a dispatch increases on-road risks. Driving while intoxicated may lead to damage for the trucker, their business and other drivers and their property.

Therefore, the penalties for commercial driving under the influence are often severe.

If a trucker receives a DUI while dispatched, they might face immediate termination or other disciplinary action from their employer. These penalties might arise from DUI charges that occur even when the trucker is off duty. Truckers should avoid DUIs not only while working, but also when driving privately.

DUIs may lead to suspension of a trucker’s commercial driver’s license or points on that license. How the charge will affect a driver’s ability to operate will likely vary based on the operator’s state of residence.

The driver’s trucking insurance rates may increase following a DUI. This often happens because the driver poses more liability risks to their insurer. Some truckers get their insurance privately, while others receive it from their employer. The structure of the policy will likely affect how much a DUI influences policy rates.

Many trucking companies require drug and alcohol testing. Furthermore, trucking companies might enforce randomized drug and alcohol testing to help encourage drivers not to drive under the influence. This helps ensure that prospective drivers pose relatively low risks when they operate.

It is therefore imperative that truckers avoid DUIs at all costs. The safest way to avoid DUIs is to not drink and drive. Truckers should strictly follow this one simple rule.

Do you need commercial Georgia trucking insurance? Bitterroot River – The 52 Rivers Blog Dancing with Nymphs Fri, 03 Oct 2014 03:15:17 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Nothing Tart about the Bitterroot /nothing-tart-bitterroot/ /nothing-tart-bitterroot/#respond Fri, 03 Oct 2014 03:15:17 +0000 October 2, 2014. Unlike most of the big Montana Rivers, the Bitterroot only flows about 75 miles before emptying into the Clark Fork River. The Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge is located on the Bitterroot. Over 235 birds have been identified in this area that covers 160 acres. That is my destination for tomorrow. I chose the campsite where I’m staying because it’s situated right on the Bitterroot. Anglers come and go from the boat launch that I can see from my Scamp’s door. The riparian life today included lots of insect hatches including midges and caddis and the occasional osprey and eagle flying overhead. When the trucks and cars stopped their incessant noise from the nearby highway, I could hear the slow, mellow trickle of the fall flow. I hung up my waders and boots today and instead concentrated on my website and other details of life that I’ve left undone for the last six months as I finished writing my book. Now, I need to read up on the latest library news since I’ll be taking the job as director of the Pine River Valley Library in Bayfield, CO. This amazing little library won the honor of “Best Small Library in the Country.” Pretty impressive. For now, though, I’m going to focus on my last three days in Montana and enjoy the company of the folks who are participating in the national Casting for Recovery fundraiser this weekend. /nothing-tart-bitterroot/feed/ 0 Guide, Giver /guide-giver/ /guide-giver/#comments Wed, 16 Oct 2013 17:28:45 +0000 Russell Parks volunteered to guide my new friend, Mary Patry and me on the Bitterroot for the Casting for Recovery fundraiser. Never did I believe that I would have one of the best guides in the business, but I did! Russell owns the Missoulian Angler, an outfitter since 1987 helping anglers with both their fishing and tying needs. Russell’s passion is bringing people and the outdoors together. His degree in Outdoor Education from MIami University has been put into action in many ways, including work with troubled teens. This work inspired research that proved to college educators that if you organize a shared outdoor experience like backpacking, hiking or mountain climbing for incoming freshmen the attrition rate is significantly lowered. He is a devoted father and husband, speaking highly of his poet wife, a teacher at Montana State University. One thing I will remember about Russell is the time he took to analyze my cast throughout the day until he figured out the nuances that kept me from being able to throw my line the way I wanted to. His teaching skills were phenomenal. But besides that, I am so appreciative of his knowledge of the river, his boating skills and most importantly, his kindness. It’s not everyone who will give up a whole day of work to help women with breast cancer. You are so appreciated, Russell. /guide-giver/feed/ 1 A Night to Remember /a-night-to-remember/ /a-night-to-remember/#respond Mon, 14 Oct 2013 04:33:48 +0000 Surprising to me, the little town of Hamilton near the south end of the Bitterroot Valley in southwestern Montana is home to one of the country’s most exclusive country clubs, the Stock Barn, where the dinner for the Casting for Recovery fundraiser was held. The clubhouse and golf course are surrounded by spectacular views of two mountain ranges, the Sapphire and Bitterroot ranges. The interior of the Stock Barn is decorated with beautiful art and has a traditional western feel to it. Lewis and Clark first traveled to the Bitterroot valley in 1805 on their historic expedition. Later that century, Marcus Daly, an Irish immigrant purchased the Chaffin homestead and later built the Daly Mansion. As mentioned in an earlier post on Butte, Montana, copper mining has been a mainstay in the economy in that area. Daly made his fortune by building a smelter for the nearby copper mines. By the turn of the century the mines produced over $17 million worth of copper each year, making Daly one of the wealthiest men in the country. His 22,000 acres became the grounds of the Stock Farm. Today, Charles Schwab owns the Stock Farm. In this historic setting, Peg Miskin put together an amazing couple of days for the donors for this most valuable organization. In addition to a scrumptious meal, an alluring silent auction and great company, we heard from some survivors including one very brave woman dealing with terminal cancer. She was an inspiration to us all as she spoke frankly about her condition and how CFR had made such a difference to her. I have found the organization that I want to help fund and donate my time to. /a-night-to-remember/feed/ 0 Match the Hatch /match-the-hatch/ /match-the-hatch/#respond Sat, 12 Oct 2013 03:56:59 +0000 + Cool looking slug Δ Should have tried a wooly bugger /match-the-hatch/feed/ 0 Profoundly Grateful /profoundly-grateful/ /profoundly-grateful/#comments Sat, 12 Oct 2013 03:49:31 +0000 Hamilton, MT. There is a reason that cultures create pat words for moments of intense emotion. A simple, “I’m sorry” or “my deepest condolences” encapsulate the feelings into a meaningful phrase that does its best at expressing those emotions. For me, the words that I want to write about my couple of days in Hamilton with the Casting for Recovery folks must be simple because the experience influenced and moved me in ways that I can not describe. So let’s just say, I am “profoundly grateful” for the opportunity I had to participate in a fund-raiser for women breast cancer survivors. But, there is so much more to share about this event. Starting with a meet and greet at the Ratcheson home in Hamilton, I met Mary Patry from New Hampshire, with whom I would fish the next day. It was one of those events where you meet people that you could talk to all night long. The home was situated on many acres with no one else in sight and was a delightful western log cabin (not the one-room style) with large stone fire places and comfortable leather furniture. Mary and I made our plans for the next day and reluctantly we went to get some sleep. The next morning we met up with our guide, Russell Parks, from the Missoulian Angler, who had volunteered his time for the day for the cause. Several awards were to be given that evening, one of which was for the person who could keep their fly on the longest that day. Mary did really well with her girdle bug but I didn’t have any luck with my San Juan worm, so I just abandoned it after 45 minutes or so. We had a beautiful fall day that offered us warm temperatures, beautiful colors and good fishing. Mary had only fished a few times (kind of like me a year ago) and ended up having a good day both nymph and dry fly fishing catching many whiteys and some rainbows. Russell was a great teacher and she was a quick learner. Our lunches were provided by the local Red Rooster catering shop and provided us with one of the biggest chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever seen. My family would laugh at me, because they have oftentimes recommended that I go to cookie therapy because I have no self-control when it comes to cookies. Our day ended way too soon, but not before we had a double catch – Mary with a whitey and me with a rainbow. That’s only happened to me a handful of times. It’s always tricky for the guide who’s trying to steer the boat and release two fish at the same time, but Russell managed well. With a wonderful day behind us, Mary and I headed off to the dinner that night. Now, that was an event to remember. More about that in my next post. /profoundly-grateful/feed/ 1 A Bluebird Day /a-bluebird-day/ /a-bluebird-day/#comments Thu, 10 Oct 2013 06:11:11 +0000 I first spoke with Jack Mauer about two months ago when I signed up for the Casting for Recovery fundraiser. He organized all the guides for our fishing day on the river. I wanted to spend a little more time getting to know him and the Bitterroot, so Jack and I floated the river for a half day on a rather miserable, cloudy day. So, why do I entitle this post, “A Bluebird Day?” After catching a number of fish in one of the more productive holes, Jack and I were reveling in our success. My rod was pointed at the river banks as we chatted about the latest catch. Suddenly I felt my rod take a dip and looked over to see a Mountain Blue Bird resting on the tip of my rod. He actually looked as surprised as we were. Jack whispers, “Don’t move your rod. Keep it perfectly still,” as he reaches for his camera. I wish I could say that we did capture a photo, but we did not. I will have to let my mind’s eye recall that image because the chances of that happening again are close to nil. Jack and his partner Merle Ann Loman, are dedicated to the well-being of their beautiful town and river. Merle is an accomplished photographer and you should take a look at the bear on her website. We outdoor photographers are a lucky bunch. /a-bluebird-day/feed/ 1

The 52 Rivers Blog Dancing with Nymphs Thu, 10 Oct 2024 14:34:41 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Flora in Crete /flora-in-crete/ /flora-in-crete/#respond Thu, 10 Oct 2024 14:27:38 +0000 /?p=3735 Before I left for Crete on September 15, I spent a great deal of my time gardening. I had a greenhouse built last fall – a long time dream – and I filled it with plants, some from long-time friend Marianne, who started her tomatoes in February. Florian made me three new raised beds – two outside the protection of a fence, and one within our fenced in area. I did everything I knew to bring the fruits of my labor to ripeness before I left, but except for the odd tomato, pepper and eggplant, I had to leave the bounty to my family, friends, and neighbors. Of course I knew that I would share in an abundance of vegetables and flowers available throughout Crete – but I still would have liked to have had eaten some of my own home grown. In Heraklion, the main fruit and vegetable market is a sight to behold. Such abundance! And, every mile or so along many of the roads, you will see a small outdoor vegetable stand all with local produce. Coming in the fall this year, we are enjoying pomegranates and quince, yours for the picking as you walk along the mountain roads. The olives have another couple of months before harvest, but they’ve gone from green to black in the month we’ve been here. There are huge bunches of grapes hanging from vines begging to be picked. You see many of the same flowers in parts of the US as you see here – bougainvillia, roses, bottlebrush, poppies, morning glories, etc. Of course at 7,000 feet where I live in Colorado, these are not to be seen, but at my kids’ home in LA, they are abundant. One new flower I discovered this year was the Cowpea, a species of the black eye pea (Vigna). It’s actually a type of herb, non-invasive, non-toxic. It’s a legume that has been used as forage for animals. The flowers are kidney shaped and as intricate as an orchid. Beautiful. /flora-in-crete/feed/ 0 Crete for the Fourth Time, September 2024 /crete-for-the-fourth-time-september-2024/ /crete-for-the-fourth-time-september-2024/#respond Tue, 01 Oct 2024 14:11:01 +0000 /?p=3723 You could have fooled me that I would be returning to our little mountain town Pendamodi in Crete for the 4th time in four years, but it’s such a welcoming and comfortable place that it’s impossible to say no. The thing about returning to Crete is that there is a certain familiarity at the same time there is still so much to learn and explore. The familiarity makes me seek out experiences to feel more a part of where I am living – hanging out more in our little village where we can work on our language skills for one. Also, knowing where to shop for our necessities, or being invited into the homes of local people for a meal in spite of language barriers. There’s a pull to go someplace every day because there’s so much to see and do here, but I am definitely buying into the local experiences. Many people in Pendamodi don’t speak but a few words of English, and as hard as I’m studying, I am at the most basic level of communicating. I did bring a little translator that I purchased, but I’m actually finding Google Translate easier to use and more reliable with internet access here. Two years ago I took an hour Greek lesson every day and that certainly helped, but I feel as if I have to relearn everything after a year hiatus. My next step is learning the alphabet so I can read the signs – knowing their “P” is the Greek letter “rho”, which is an “R” sound, for example, or the letter “B” is the Greek letter “beta”, which has a “V” sound. And then there are those whole new letters like “Pi”, which is written like an upside down capital “U” – kind of! At any rate, I am constantly amazed and grateful to be able to experience a totally different culture from my own and not just blow through a country as a tourist. For my birthday, I had quite a surprise. We had been out for dinner the night before with our friends Georgio and Antonia. We thought we agreed to meeting Georgio for breakfast, and then I was going to go for my morning walk. After breakfast he insisted we get in his car and he was going to give us a ride to the next town where I said I was going to walk. He gave us a little tour of the town (another post) and then he insisted we get back into his car after some photo opps. He took us to Heraklion – about 20 miles away – to pick up some baked goods. I was getting antsy to get on with my day, when my husband stopped me in my tracks and said, “I’m just embracing it!” What a great way to deal with the situation. As we drove back to Pendamodi, Georgio stopped at his house, where we discovered Antonia had been cooking all day to prepare a meal for us in celebration of my birthday. We realized that Georgio thought we had talked the previous night about a meal at his house while we couldn’t figure out why he was driving us all over creation! Somehow we missed that we had agreed to go to their house for this birthday celebration! The meal was amazing! Antonia had made moussaka (quite time-consuming), french fried potatoes (the Cretans love their french fries), two kinds of breads, pork chops to feed an army, Greek salad, meatballs, homemade coleslaw, wine, raki, coca cola, pastries, etc. etc. etc.! It was one of the most endearing things and special birthdays that I’ve ever had. We danced and ate and drank and went home after 5 hours of broken Greek and English with a memory that will last a lifetime. Efcharisto poli, Georgio and Antonia. /crete-for-the-fourth-time-september-2024/feed/ 0 Fishing in Patagonian Chile /fishing-in-patagonian-chile/ /fishing-in-patagonian-chile/#respond Tue, 01 Oct 2024 14:09:53 +0000 /?p=3730 When our neighbors Tina and Dave LeMaster approached us about a trip to a fishing lodge near Chaitain, Chile, we were intrigued, to say the least. Our fishing adventures had taken us many places in the US and even down to the Bahamas, but we didn’t think South America would enter into play. We took the bait and started making our plans for an epic journey to get there and 9 days of hard fishing, ending with a visit to Santiago and the surrounding wine country. I’m actually writing this 7 months after our trip because I didn’t have a computer with me and just got too busy to resurrect my blog until now. The trip down included flights from Durango to Dallas, Dallas to Santiago, Santiago to Puerto Montt, Puerto Montt to Chaiten, and then a couple hour drive to the lodge! We did spend the night in Puerto Montt across the lake from a volcano before the last couple legs! We arrived to some rain, which is par for the course down there, something I didn’t know until after we returned. If you look on your weather app for Chaiten, it’s raining down there 90% of the time. However, for us – we had 9 days of great weather – totally lucked out. The lodge is run by Marcel, a Dutchman, who has been there for years guiding this fishing operation. He loves his life there and has made quite a name for his place. We shared a cabin with the LeMasters and walked over to the lodge for their innovative meals and family-style dining. We were lucky to meet some really lovely couples included some great folks from the Vermont/New Hampshire area, who we’re hoping will come to visit us in SW Colorado. There was so much water down there, it was unbelievable. Expansive rivers with lots of fish and no people. Rafting, mile after mile in dense forest and blue skies and glaciers in the background There wasn’t much biomass but the rivers haven’t been overfished, so we were able to catch more than our share and some really big rainbows and browns. I had oftentimes of people having a 40 or 50 fish day and wasn’t sure I believed that until I boastfully say, I had that kind of a day on the 8th day of fishing. Everyday was good but on this particular day, it was cast and catch successively for hours. I’ve always said this has never been about the fishing, but that was pretty impressive. We were fished out after 9 days – never took a day off and shoulders and arms were ready for a rest. We left our friends and headed to Santiago where we stay in one of the nicest Marriots we’ve ever run across. It helps that Florian has lifetime platinum status which gets us some nice perks. The down side of that was how many nights he’s had to spend in their hotels on business over the years… Santiago was interesting. It’s a poor city of over 7 million people, and we were told to hold tight to all our possessions in several parts of the city. We saw Pinochet’s old mansion and remembered the many people who disappeared when he was President. We took the funicular up to the top of one of the mountains to get a view of the rather polluted city. We drove to the outskirts and visited two very nice Chilean wineries where we purchased some wine from old reserves and ate delicious farm to table food. For a trip that we had never planned on taking, it was quite an experience. We decided that we probably won’t book another 9 day fishing trip – back to the standard 5 days. The 70’s are changing some things. /fishing-in-patagonian-chile/feed/ 0 Field Trip /field-trip/ /field-trip/#respond Fri, 30 Jun 2023 07:43:58 +0000 /?p=3668 Although staying in the sweet mountain town of Pendamodi all month is a great option, there are many places to see on Crete, which stretches 160 miles in length, but only 45 miles in some places in width. The topography is as varied as my home state of Colorado – fields, mountains, streams, desert, but all beautiful in their own right. One of our side trips this summer was to Ierapetra on the southeast shore of the island. We were surprised to find a city with over 20,000 people. And the views, of course are spectacular. Ierapetra, meaning Sacred Stone, is a sun-drenched, peaceful and welcoming town and is famous for its beaches and sunsets. It seemed to attract mostly Cretans as opposed to foreigners and the waterfront is teeming with tavernas, bars, and gelato stores. It’s the fourth most populous city on the island and has developed into two sections – one an old town with narrow streets, a mosque, and a village-like atmosphere, and another more modern section with a large open air shopping area, a town hall, and restaurants. From the 13th to the 17th centuries, Ierapetra, became prosperous under the influence of Venice, one of its manyconquerors. The Fortress of Kales, built in the early years of Venetian rule, was built to protect the harbor, and is a remnant of this period. Later, when the Ottomans occupied the island, a mosque was built and remains in the old town section. We visited a small museum, which was formerly a school for Muslim children. An interesting number of finds from Ierapetra’s past can be found in the Museum of Antiquities. The exhibition’s centerpiece is a well-preserved statue of Persephone and some pottery dating back to the Minoan period. Ierapetra is driven by agriculture in the winter and tourism in the summer. Olive oil has been produced there since Minoan times but presently, large quantities of fruit and vegetables have also been exported. Greenhouses surround the city and as you drive by, all you see are plants overtaking their space. It’s quite impressive. This part of Greece definitely requires another visit. /field-trip/feed/ 0 Food, Glorious Food /food-glorious-food/ /food-glorious-food/#respond Wed, 28 Jun 2023 11:09:13 +0000 /?p=3656 “Let Food be Thy Medicine and Medicine be Thy Food” said Hippocrates. Whether you lived 2700 years ago in the time of Hippocrates, or today in the time of James Beard, who said “Food is our common ground, a universal experience,” food is certainly one of the basic needs in life, and also can be one of the most enjoyable. There is no better place than Crete to experience the joy and healthfulness of eating! Greece is a country rich in tasty and unique foods, and food is considered one of the pillars of their heritage. The Greek culinary art has many nutritious legumes, really nutrient-rich dairy products like feta yogurt and cheese, plant type-organic products like honey, fresh vegetables, extra virgin olive oil as well as olives, fresh fish and meat. The history of the Cretan diet goes back to the Neolithic age! Although the evidence is only circumstantial, the Minoans from 4,000 years ago were believed to have eaten a very similar diet to what modern day Cretans eat. Traces of olive oil and honey have been found in the large clay jars dug up from the era. And that is understandable because on my walks every day, I pick wild plums or capers or wild greens or grapes to eat from the vines. Although conquerors have been abundant, the cuisine and spirit have survived unchanged. One of the most remarkable things about the Greek cuisine is the fact that they produce such a variety of dishes with just a few basic items: olives and olive oil, bread, cheese (especially feta), tomatoes, garlic, nuts, honey, cucumbers, squash, eggplant, zucchini, and fish and either goat or lamb. Of course there are some additions here and there but these are the staples that they combine in the most creative of ways. I have shared some photos of some of the elegant of presentations of these healthful, delicious foods. /food-glorious-food/feed/ 0 Cretan Hospitality /cretan-hospitality/ /cretan-hospitality/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2023 17:21:00 +0000 /?p=3613 The Cretans are some of the most welcoming, hospitable people I have ever come across. Elafonisi Beach is on the western shore of Crete, and it really does have pink sand, lapped by the clear waters of the lagoon that surrounds it. The coral sand gets its color from the fragments of red and pink shells that get ground up by the water, and as it is a lagoon you can wade across the knee-deep water to the island for more beaches and areas to explore. It is one of Crete’s most popular tourist spots. The day we went, it was difficult to get a couple of lounge chairs with their fake palm tree umbrella overhead, but we did for $20. The lines for food were long and the food was expensive. After hanging out at our home in the small mountain town of Pendamodi, we felt very out of place there. Instead we headed back to the southern shore town of Paleochora, where we grabbed a couple of lounge chairs and were served drinks and food with about a dozen people on the whole beach. One highlight of the trip to Elafonisi was a stop at a local beekeeper/ olive stand. The gentleman knew a fair amount of English, and we were taken by his dozens of bee hives and honey operation. Cretan honey is wonderful – I suppose as good as our local Bayfield honey in Colorado. But, it seems really special, and that’s what matters! And the olives were truly delicious. They were wrinkly and salty with an allure that made it difficult to stop eating them. /beaches-etc/feed/ 0 Mountain Field Trip /mountain-field-trip/ /mountain-field-trip/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2023 18:17:44 +0000 /?p=3586 We left our little village and headed west towards Mount Psiloritis. At one point they started building a ski resort on the mountain, but it was never completed. We drove through a natural park, which includes Mount Ida. It is a member of UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network. Boy, is it rugged! Our little Toyota Aygo – and I do mean little – did a great job of four wheeling on washed out roads where we found company only in the form of goats. It’s a vast area with unbelievably steep hills and truly perfect for goats. They were decked out with their long hair of vastly different colors, all with bells around their necks and quite shy. I’m very grateful for their delicious cheese. We ended up in Anogeia (think “annoy-a”), a town we also visited last year, and one of our favorites. The family that owns the taverna where we lunched has been there for generations. They roast a side of lamb in their outdoor barbecue daily and serve a full menu of greek dishes. There was no doubt in my mind that I wanted to come back for a month after our stay here last year during the month of June. Of course I didn’t expect it to be the same, and it certainly is not. Not only is the weather different, but how I am relating to my time here is different. I have adapted to the slower pace of life by not feeling as driven to see every historical site and quaint town on the island and instead staying put and enjoying our special place. It’s hard to believe we’ve been gone a week already and I’m just getting my first blog posted. Back in the days of my 52 rivers trip, I was posting something every day! While both options have their advantages and disadvantages, there are some key factors to consider when making this decision. In this post, we’ll explore the pros and cons of renting vs. buying a home, and provide you with some up-to-date facts to help you make the right decision. Pros of Renting: Flexibility: One of the main advantages of renting is the flexibility it provides. You can easily move to a different location or upgrade to a larger space without having to worry about the cost and hassle of selling a home. No Maintenance Costs: Another advantage of renting is that you don’t have to worry about maintenance costs. If something breaks or needs repair, your landlord is responsible for fixing it. Lower Upfront Costs: Renting typically requires lower upfront costs than buying a home, which can make it more accessible for those who may not have the savings or credit history required for a down payment. Cons of Renting: No Equity: One of the main disadvantages of renting is that you’re not building equity in a property. This means that you’re not building a long-term investment that can increase in value over time. Limited Control: When you’re renting a property, you have limited control over the space. You may not be able to make major changes or improvements, and you may have to follow strict rules and regulations set by the landlord. No Tax Benefits: Renting doesn’t come with the tax benefits of owning a home, such as being able to deduct mortgage interest and property taxes from your income taxes. Pros of Buying: Building Equity: One of the main advantages of buying a home is that you’re building equity in a property. Over time, as you pay off your mortgage, you’ll have more ownership of the property, and you’ll be able to build wealth through appreciation. Control Over the Space: When you own a home, you have full control over the space. You can make any changes or improvements you want, and you don’t have to follow strict rules or regulations set by a landlord. Tax Benefits: Homeownership comes with several tax benefits, including the ability to deduct mortgage interest and property taxes from your income taxes. Cons of Buying: High Upfront Costs: Buying a home typically requires a large upfront cost, including a down payment, closing costs, and other fees. Maintenance Costs: As a homeowner, you’re responsible for all maintenance and repair costs, which can be significant over time. Less Flexibility: Buying a home can be a long-term commitment, and it can be difficult to sell a property quickly if you need to move or upgrade to a larger space. “Owning a home is a keystone of wealth – both financial affluence and emotional security.” – Suze Orman The decision to rent or buy a home is a complex one that depends on a variety of factors, including your financial situation, lifestyle, and long-term goals. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each option carefully and consider the current real estate market /2023/04/17/the-pros-and-cons-of-renting-vs-buying-a-home-which-is-right-for-you/feed/ 1 1964 How to Stage Your Home for a Quick Sale: A Step-by-Step Guide /2023/04/17/how-to-stage-your-home-for-a-quick-sale-a-step-by-step-guide/ /2023/04/17/how-to-stage-your-home-for-a-quick-sale-a-step-by-step-guide/#comments Mon, 17 Apr 2023 11:45:47 +0000 How to Stage Your Home for a Quick Sale: A Step-by-Step Guide Are you looking to sell your home quickly? If so, now may be the perfect time to take the plunge. The current real estate market is favorable for homebuyers, and there are several reasons why you should consider buying a home at this time. Low-interest rates: Mortgage interest rates are currently at historic lows, which makes it more affordable than ever to purchase a home. With lower interest rates, you can make lower monthly payments, which can help you afford a more expensive home or reduce your monthly expenses. Affordable prices: Although home prices have been rising steadily in recent years, they have leveled off somewhat due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that homes are more affordable now than they have been in the past, giving homebuyers a better chance to find a home that fits their budget. Good inventory of homes: There are plenty of homes available, which means that you have more choices when it comes to finding the perfect home. With a wide range of homes available, you are more likely to find a home that fits your needs and preferences. Long-term investment potential: Buying a home is a long-term investment that can pay off in the years to come. As home values continue to rise over time, you’ll build equity in your home, which can be used to finance future purchases or fund your retirement. Tax benefits: Owning a home comes with several tax benefits, including deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, and more. These deductions can help reduce your tax burden and increase your overall financial flexibility. In conclusion, there are several reasons why now is the perfect time to buy a home. With low-interest rates, affordable prices, a good inventory of homes, long-term investment potential, and tax benefits, buying a home is an attractive option for many homebuyers.
