Twenge, PhD</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">W. Keith Campbell, PhD</span><br /> <span style="font-size: xx-small;"><br /></span> Publisher: Atria Books<br /> First edition published: April, 2009<br /> <br /> <a href=" /> <br /> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Reviewing non-fiction in our highly-politicized culture can be a real challenge.&nbsp; Finding a book with no ax to grind in the partisan wars is very much appreciated.&nbsp; Having said that, this book is in some ways an even bigger challenge, because it really makes us take another look at the world around us and reassess.&nbsp; We are in the throes of a BIG cultural shift, and a lot of the mystifying behaviors we see other people performing every day -- you know, the ones that make us think "What the heck is going on?&nbsp; WHY would anyone do that?"-- suddenly seem connected in ways we could not have imagined.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The book is just over a decade old.&nbsp; You'd think that some of the information would have found its way into the greater culture, and maybe some of it has, but from what I see around me, the issues are not only still there, but some of the book's predictions are sitting in front of my face when I look out the window, watch TV, or spend time on the 'net.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> In some ways the title says it all.&nbsp; But all of us have our own definitions of what defines a narcissist, and rarely do we look in the mirror and ask the question, "Do I have those attributes too?"&nbsp; Since one of my reasons for doing all the reading I do is to find books that make people think, this one is high on the list.&nbsp; It makes us think about ourselves, the culture around us, and the possible futures we are creating for ourselves without realizing it.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> One of the key discussions of the decade, at least among the general public, has been whether people need to have high self-esteem to succeed.&nbsp; It has been considered insensitive to point out any want of perfection in others, in the belief that such an action would cause stress and self doubt that would make the victim less able to cope.&nbsp; For the generation with parents who got themselves through the first depression with phrases like "sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me" and "consider the source, and if you don't respect their opinion, ignore them," this attitude has been completely perplexing.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> This book asks whether this new sensitivity, this new need to constantly buck up personal self esteem, putting the obligation on others to ensure&nbsp; that children and even co-workers never ever feel inadequate, is actually psychologically healthy.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It examines the unexpected side effects that happen when children feel so secure in themselves that they never self-examine, never self-question, and never listen to other views.&nbsp; At the time of its printing, it may have been seen as a bit of exaggeration, since for years it was commonly understood that children without self-esteem often had a difficult time of it, and some still bore the internal scars years later.&nbsp; But can there be too much of a good thing?&nbsp; Now that a sufficient amount of time has passed, and some of the predictions in this book have manifested in the real world around us, often in disturbing ways, the answer appears to be yes.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> There are many spoilers I could include here but won't, because if I had my druthers, I'd insist this book be compulsory reading in high school, and would recommend it to all my friends, so I think it should be read, not summarized.&nbsp; And re-read.&nbsp; It makes us think, about ourselves and of the others around us that seem so hard to understand.&nbsp; Many elements go into our personalities, and this really is only one piece of the puzzle, but it's an important one.&nbsp; More critically, at least for the generations to come, it is something we can actually work to fix.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> 2020/02/the-narcissism-epidemic-living-in-age.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Eva Kosinski (Gabriella Wheeler))47tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6882236642655001998.post-5654280348402658715Mon, 27 Mar 2017 17:03:00 +00002017-03-27T10:03:14.100-07:00climate changecorporate dominancedisasterdomestic terrordysfunctionaldystopiainjustice and corruptionpredictionreligionscience fictionself-awarenessspiritualityviolenceParable of the Sower Every so often I pick up a book by an author I'd never heard of, caught by an attractive piece of cover art or back-jacket blurb, and find a work, as I did a few years ago, that really hits home. &nbsp;Xenogenesis, by Octavia E. Butler was one such book. &nbsp;Doing a bit more research, I discovered that I had stumbled onto a treasure -- she was the first well known black female science fiction writer, and had won a number of awards. &nbsp;I decided to find more of her books, but shortly thereafter, got onto reading primarily non-fiction and that thought got pushed into back storage.<br /> <br /> My addiction to online discount book sellers and second hand bookstores, however, saved me. &nbsp;I ran across another of her books at Daedalus.com, "Parable of the Sower," published in 2000. &nbsp;Watching cultural trends, and people's behaviors throughout her life (she was writing stories even as a child), Butler felt that if we kept going in the same general direction, some very bad things would be in the offing. &nbsp; Our separation of people by race and class, the rich turning their backs on communities, preferring to live among their peers in gated communities of the like-minded and the economically secure, to avoid having to deal with the outside world, the growth of drug culture, the fears of global warming, the lack of sensitivity to the plight of others, all led into the creation of her vision in "Parable," of the coming 2020s. &nbsp; The vision is dismaying and hopeful, violent and steadfast, terrifying and promising. &nbsp;Butler had once again proved her writing was well worth my reading.<br /> <br /> Unfortunately, she died only 6 years after this book was published, before reaching 60, to my mind a great loss to readers everywhere, so there aren't any new books coming, but if you ever come across one of her works, I highly recommend reading it. &nbsp; She wanted a better world, with better people in it, and whether that improvement came from science, religion or alien intervention, she believed it could be achieved, and her body of work tries to show us how it could/might come to pass.<br /> <br /> "Parable" is not easy reading for the squeamish -- it is a rotting, dysfunctional, and self-destructive society her main character Laurel is born into -- but it is thought-provoking and may, perhaps, if her message gets through, keep us from falling into the patterns of distrust and violence that give us a window into the world faced by refugees everywhere, and help us find that hopeful future.2017/03/parable-of-sower.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Eva Kosinski (Gabriella Wheeler))7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6882236642655001998.post-17713010517211983Sat, 16 Apr 2016 23:05:00 +00002016-04-16T16:05:24.698-07:00alternate worldculture clashfantasyfuturisticgovernancescience fictionscifisociologyA Fistful of Utopias - Part I<br> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br></div> <br> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="; width="149"></a></div> <span style="font-size: x-large;"><br></span> <span style="font-size: x-large;">A Fistful of Utopias:  Part I</span><br>Eva Kosinski<br> <br> I spend a good deal of time poking around in the Kindle book section for works that are interesting, and most importantly, budget friendly. I came across &quot;8 Novels of Utopia&quot; for a grand total of $.99 and thought this was interesting....many were from the 19th century. So I decided to look to see how far back the tendency went to find the perfect society via literature. I found the namesake for the concept, Sir Thomas More&#39;s &quot;Utopia,&quot; the same Thomas More who was Lord High Chancellor for Henry VIII, later beheaded by said King for refusing to call the King the head of the Church, and later canonized by the Catholic Church). &quot;Utopia&quot; was published in 1515. Then I remembered Plato&#39;s &quot;Republic&quot; dating back, according to Wikipedia, to 380BC. (comments on that one, I will leave to the many college philosophy courses that deal with its complexities)<br> <br> <div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"> <br>It seems to this very minute, people are still discussing the idea of a perfect society, one that would rid itself of elitist control, poverty, injustice, and bias, but to date, few have actually managed to come off the written page and enter the reality that we live in. Various attempts have been tried, usually resulting in either extreme poverty with power concentrated at the top, or total economic collapse. There&#39;s an old saw that gets quoted from time to time, usually referring to death and taxes: &quot; If someone had figured out how to deal with them, they long since would have cashed in and made a fortune.&quot; That doesn&#39;t mean they don&#39;t continue to try. Should you have any doubt, go to google images and type in Utopia. Across the years there are dozens of books, and more and more editions of, and discussions of, Utopian concepts.</div><a href="2016/04/a-fistful-of-utopias-part-i.html#more">Read more »</a>2016/04/a-fistful-of-utopias-part-i.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Eva Kosinski (Gabriella Wheeler))0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6882236642655001998.post-5284894300869069468Fri, 30 Oct 2015 20:24:00 +00002015-10-31T19:07:51.088-07:00blog hopbook give awayHalloweenshort fictionspookyAll Goodies for HalloweenDo you like blog hops with a theme? The bad news is there are not enough participants to make a good tour. So, if you have a blog and you have a slot open sometime near the end of October or the first two weeks of November where you can put an interview, a guest post, or a fun quiz, drop a comment. or send me a note at SundaySterling at aol d0t com.  Who knows, you might find yourself $50 richer!<br> <br> <h3> Today I have two books giveaways:</h3> <div> How lucky we are to have two books up for grabs! Actually we have three since  Poague is celebrating the release of her new book by giving away two copies of her very first novel and Karla Tipton is passing along one of hers.</div> <div> </div><a href="2015/10/calling-all-bloggers-

Author J.A. Nelson's novel follows in the tradition of historical fiction. Nelson creates a beautiful but terrifying sixteenth century where numerous factions struggle for power and influence. The main characters are loyal but fallible, and the reader identifies with their struggle to keep moving forward--to finish what they've started.... Nelson has developed a timeless story.... A MAN OF HONOR may be set in a distant time and place, but Horatio's search for the truth about his late friend, Hamlet, is an internal journey of discovery to which many readers will relate." - IndieReader Reviews<br /> <br /> "With its literary flourishes and exciting scenes, A Man of Honor addresses ethical questions in fascinating ways....Setting and moods...capture the flavor of Nordic sagas.... A literary novel featuring taut action and strong characters who address questions about the nature of integrity." - Clarion Reviews<br /> <br /> "The story of Hamlet survives, truthfully told.... Horatio is the perfect character to carry on Hamlet's story.... An intriguing twist.... Among the pages of an adventure is a story of one man's commitment to his sense of honor and duty, as well as the importance and worth of legends." - The US Review<div><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: left;">My Take:</h3><div>When offered the opportunity to read and review a book that takes up where Hamlet left off, I was eager to accept - of course. I'm a big Shakespeare nerd, we made sure to spend ample time studying Shakespeare during our homeschooling years, and even now that all the kids have graduated and moved on to colleget and beyond, we still have nerdy conversations about our favorite plays.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>I think I got off to a bad start with <i>A Man of Honor</i> by focusing too much of the Hamlet aspect. I think this book is better if the reader focuses on Horatio as a stand alone character. Hamlet is a huge influence on him and his action throughout the book, but the story is actually about Horatio, his friends and his quest to honor his friend Hamlet.</div><div><br /></div><div>There were aspects of the book that bothered me a bit like how Horatio seemed to miraculously learn archery and how to be chivalrous in a day or so, and some of the chases seem just a bit too much. The timeline is shortened and the author takes some liberties with history, but overall it was a fun read. Nelson does explain her historical choices in the Author's Note, which I appreciated. It is an adventure tale with lots of action and drama. And when you pull in Marlowe at the end -- I'm also a huge Marlowe fan, so naturally I liked the ending of the book.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>If you are a strict literary person, maybe don't read it, but if you like historical adventure tales that refer to your favorite literay characters and authors, then you will probably enjoy <i>A Man of Hono</i>r.</div><div><br /> <br /> <h3 style="text-align: center;">About the Author</h3> <p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-19112" height="321" src="; width="300" /></p> <p style="text-align: center;">J. A. Nelson’s passion for exploring connections between history, literature, and evidence in written texts has shaped her life—from a BA (Occidental College) and MA (The George Washington University) in cultural studies to a two-decade career at the National Archives of the United States, working with historical documentary treasures and helping people access unique stories in those records. Ms. Nelson is a native of Culver City, CA, a Los Angeles suburb. She lives with her husband in Northern Virginia. An ungodly murder.<br /> <br /> Easter, 1177. Canterbury Cathedral, home to the tomb of martyr Saint Thomas Becket, bears the wounds of a terrible fire. Benedict, prior of the great church, leads its rebuilding. But horror interrupts the work. One of the stonemasons is found viciously murdered, the dead man’s face disfigured by a shocking wound.<br /> <br /> When King’s clerk Aelred Barling and his assistant, Hugo Stanton, arrive on pilgrimage to the tomb, the prior orders them to investigate the unholy crime.<br /> <br /> But the killer soon claims another victim–and another. As turmoil embroils the congregation, the pair of sleuths face urgent pressure to find a connection between the killings.<br /> <br /> With panic on the rise, can Barling and Stanton catch the culprit before evil prevails again—and stop it before it comes for them?<br /> <br /> THE CANTERBURY MURDERS is the third book in E.M. Powell’s Stanton and Barling medieval murder mystery series. Combining intricate plots, shocking twists and a winning–if unlikely–pair of investigators, this series is perfect for fans of Ellis Peters’ Brother Cadfael or C. J. Sansom’s Shardlake.<br /> <br /><h3 style="text-align: left;">My Take:</h3><div>The Stanton and Barling novels are one of my favorite mystery series. Stanton and Barling are right up there with Powell's The Fifth Knight Series. The duo are fun to read about and I appreciate the way their friendship grows, but slowly and sometimes painfully. E.M. Powell's novels are always well researched and bring the historical period to life for the reader.&nbsp;</div><div><br /></div><div>The Canterbury Murders take place at Canterbury, naturally. During the rush to complete the rebuilding of the cathedral and while Barling is on pilgrimage to the site of Saint Thomas Becket's tomb, there is a grusome murder that threatens to throw the rebuilding plans off course. Barling and Stanton are recruited to solve the murder, but there is another murder and then another. Needless to say, Barling is anxious to solve the murders so he can finish his pilgrimage. And Stanton wants to enjoy a pint or two and maybe help a young woman in distress.</div><div><br /></div><div>There is so much going on in this fun romp of a mystery. The murders are truly gruesome and not funny at all, but knowing that Stanton and Barling are on the case will leave the reader reassured that things will be resolved. But not before several murders, a run in with a necromancer, a witch, an ambitious and less than scrupulous monk, and a complete surprise reveal and a mad dash rescue. There are several great candidates for the murderer and I confess that I wasn't even close to figuring it out! There are lots of twists and turns and I couldn't put the book down.</div><div><br /></div><div>Honestly, I don't know what else one could ask of an historical murder mystery!&nbsp; As always, I highly recommend all of the Barling and Stanton novels. They can be read in order or as standalones, but I prefer to read them in order.&nbsp;</div><div><div> <h4 style="text-align: center;"><br /></h4><h4 style="text-align: center;"><br /></h4><h4 style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><a href="; rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Available on Amazon</a></span></h4> <h3 style="text-align: center;">About the Author</h3><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="448" data-original-width="294" height="320" src="; /></a></div><br /><div>E.M. Powell’s historical thriller and medieval mystery Fifth Knight and Stanton &amp; Barling novels have been #1 Amazon and Bild bestsellers.</div> <br /> The third Stanton &amp; Barling mystery, THE CANTERBURY MURDERS, will be released in November 2020.<br /> <br /> Born and raised in the Republic of Ireland into the family of Michael Collins (the legendary revolutionary and founder of the Irish Free State), she lives in northwest England with her husband, daughter and a Facebook-friendly dog.<br /> <br /> E.M. It was a regular day in South Africa. I was teaching English and Amanda was writing an Economics Management Science exam. It's the end of her Grade 8 year and exam time. I decided to keep things simple by choosing American-themed food instead of traditional Thanksgiving fare. My husband pitched in and his help allowed for the day to go smoothly. We began with blueberry pancakes. For lunch, we had BLT sandwiches, and for dinner KFC. Overall, it was a good day.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">🎄🎄🎄🎄🎄</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Everyone should read at least one feel-good book during the Christmas holidays, and since I decided to put my ebook on sale for a few days, I've made it super easy for you.&nbsp;</span><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b><i><a href="; target="_blank">The Novice</a></i></b> by C.A. This is a survey presentation, covering a broad set of topics meant to expand your interests and provide self-study opportunities. We will cover:&nbsp;</div> <div> * Schools of Thought: Where we have been, why testing has changed</div> <div> * Testing Missions: How to know what you should test&nbsp;</div> <div> * Testing Strategies: How to make your testing organized&nbsp;</div> <div> * Testing Tactics: How to make your testing better</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> This will include practical examples as well as theory. You do not need to attend the whitebox session to gain value from this talk. However, these presentations are meant as a pair and will not cover the same material.</div> <div> <br /></div> <h3> Whitebox Testing Abstract</h3> <div> Whitebox Testing involves testing software with deep knowledge of the internals of the code. Every project requires me to learn new things, new tech, new ways to interact with people and new ways to do all of those things.<br /> <br /> My current list is stored in 5 different places, that's how much I have, I have an iPhone version, a <a href="; target="_blank">moleskine</a> notebook, Evernote, Todoist and finally my work backlog. (The work backlog is slowly transitioning to Evernote and Todoist)<br /> <br /> I've tried several different versions of organization (Get Things Done, Kan-Ban, Backlog) but none of them really work for me. I haven't found the idea of a prioritized backlog all that useful.<br /> <br /> Currently I'm trying to write a blog, start up a Tester group, help a couple of people with larger scope test community projects, volunteer to help with BBST, run an elementary school carnival, volunteer in my child's classroom, plus a reading list of 20-30 blogs, 8-12 articles, my stack of books is overwhelming (literally, it fell over as I tried to count them) and then my list of word definitions, small learnings and topics to research is 100+. Garage full of projects. 101 things to do this year. Building a fort. Expand chicken coop. And none of this really even just deals with normal life maintenance; mow lawn, do dishes, feed offspring, clean house, entertain the children or pay attention to the wife.<br /> <br /> I have found that when my brain says “oh, what about…”, and I have the time, space and/or resources to dive myself into that topic immediately. I can focus and delve deeply into a subject, and stay there for hours on end sometimes bordering on mania. (What Chimanski calls <a href="; target="_blank">Flow</a>). If I am unable to dive into my minds chosen topic immediately my mind wanders for a time. Eventually, it settles on something else it finds interesting, and the cycle repeats, until I am capable of doing something that my mind wants to do.<br /> <br /> I have been attempting to find ways to narrow down or show my mind the path that I think would most benefit me at the moment, and sometimes I can grind my mind into something. Usually my mind wins, and I wander.<br /> <br /> Also, when I don’t have this massive list of things to do I find myself swimming in a sea of boredom, never able to accomplish the next thing, cause my list of potentially useful things is too small to find something that strikes my mind as interesting right now. As I tend to task change every 15-90 minutes unless I get into a flow.<br /> <br /> People are always saying "you have too much, you'll burn out". But that's not quite right, I have found that when I don't move at light speed for 8-10 months...I just don't move. But then there are those periods where nothing, just nothing seems to interest me and I am required to recharge, vegetating on kung-fu, zombie flicks and some random luddite project (woodworking, blacksmithing, calligraphy… you know the normal stuff ;).<br /> <br /> Strengths finder tells me it's Intellection. Briggs tells me it's my Intuition and Thinking pieces. Both pieces to me imply that after I've spent a fair amount of time doing massive amounts of thinking / doing, I need time off to ponder and study, connecting things internally before I can speak them outloud to other people.<br /> <br /> Or maybe I just need to recharge mentally…<br /> <br /> <br /> As an aside to prove my point, this blog post is from 2013, yet I couldn’t find the words to do the topic justice till just now, cause my brain would look at the article and go, meh not now.2017/04/having-too-much-to-do.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8147218231135584040.post-4773082293430911431Mon, 04 Apr 2016 19:58:00 +00002016-04-04T13:58:36.378-06:00FinancesHistoryPoint of ViewTestThinking Taking Stock of your QA Career and RetirementI have talked with several coworkers over the years and all of us have felt at times like it is unclear how to invest for retirement. &nbsp; Before I go on, I want to assure you that this will not be an advertisement for a particular stock nor will it be US centric with advice on 401k and IRA plans. &nbsp;Anything I say here is not financial advice, so please do see a professional. To be clear, believe nothing said in this post but rather that you should test all this out yourself. &nbsp;Use your skills in testing to analyze the data, create mind maps, and don't trust just one source. &nbsp;I will point out some common&nbsp;<a href="; target="_blank">heuristics</a> we use in testing that you can apply to the problem. &nbsp;Your own future is at stake, and at the very least you should approach this problem with equal fervor as you approach your day-to-day testing challenges.<br /> <br /> <h3> My Experience With Fees</h3> <div> <br /> When I started my career in QA at 18 I knew people said I should invest in the stock market, but I was only making a little over minimum wage for 30 hours a week. &nbsp;I had no money to invest. &nbsp;By 24 I had changed jobs and was making a better wage, but I had no time to look into how to invest in stocks. &nbsp; So I used my company’s small compensation, which invested an additional dollar for every dollar I invested, up to 3% of my salary. &nbsp; Then the housing crisis hit and my very small sum dwindled down to approximately 1,000 dollars. &nbsp; The investment company was charging me 60 dollars a year in fees, and I felt my money was better off in my pocket than having it spent away on losing stocks and fees.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Now, let’s look at this from a QA perspective, using tools like system’s thinking and the scientific method. &nbsp;I have since examined a lot of historical stock market data and it’s clear there is money to be made. &nbsp;Hiring out the investing process to someone else can cost a lot of fees. &nbsp; So let’s develop a test to see if the fees are worth it. &nbsp; Since the stock market is easier to measure, let’s use that. &nbsp;Per Wikipedia, the S&amp;P 500 index fund averaged a return of 12%. &nbsp;I was being charged 6% in fees. &nbsp;Since that seems high, let’s also see what 1% and 2% fees would look like. &nbsp; Here is how that would play out in a 10-year period of compound interest:</div> <br /> <table border="1"><tbody> <tr><td>Fees</td><td>Interest After Fees</td><td>Starting Value</td><td>10 Year End Value</td></tr> <tr><td>6%</td><td>6%</td><td>10,000</td><td>17,908.48</td></tr> <tr><td>2%</td><td>10%</td><td>10,000</td><td>25,937.42</td></tr> <tr><td>1%</td><td>11%</td><td>10,000</td><td>28,394.21</td></tr> <tr><td>0%</td><td>12%</td><td>10,000</td><td>31,058.48</td></tr> </tbody></table> <div> (See this <a href="; target="_blank">calculator</a> if you want to run your own tests)</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> So in 10 years, 6% in fees cost 43% of the possible income. &nbsp;2% costs 16% of your possible income. &nbsp; When calculated out to 50 years, 2% of fees from 7% interest will cost you 60% of your income! &nbsp; So fees do matter, due to the magic of compound interest. &nbsp;Don’t believe me? &nbsp;Test it yourself!<br /> <br /> &nbsp; As an important aside, please be aware that while the S&amp;P 500 has seen a 12% rate of return, this does not factor in inflation. &nbsp; Most inflation adjusted numbers I see show 2-3% of the earnings lost to inflation.<br /> <br /></div> <h3> Requirements, Stocks and Bonds</h3> <div> <br /> In my story, fees were only one factor. &nbsp;Another big factor was that I didn’t want to take up a lot of time, time I want to invest in testing career and home life. So, one of the clear requirements is that a retirement system for me must be fast and easy to calculate. &nbsp;Speculation is a form of gambling with high risk and high reward while investing is an effort to decrease risk and while moderately increasing reward. &nbsp; In testing we are use to trying to find high-risk areas to investigate and we can use that skill to decide what to invest in and avoid speculation.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> With these two requirements, me personally playing the stock market as a day trader is out. &nbsp;Investigating, buying individual stock and holding it breaks my time requirement. &nbsp;Housing is so variable to location and many other complex variables, that I think it's too difficult to go into in a short post, but the <a href="; target="_blank">NY Times calculator</a> was helpful for me. &nbsp; While buying up gold, oil or other commodities is possible; it tends to be a little more complicated than stock. &nbsp; This too feels more risky and time consuming, which clearly violates my personal requirements. &nbsp; So, there are only three big possibilities left within the stock market. &nbsp; There are actively trade funds, index funds and bonds and of course, one non-market option of retaining cash.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Bonds are effectively agreements to pay back loans from large institutions, like governments, so they can build bridges now, and pay back the loan on low interest later. &nbsp; They tend to not pay much in interest, but are also generally safer than stocks as governments don’t collapse that often.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Stocks are in fact businesses, which mean you actually own a piece of a business; you might own a brick in the building of your favorite restaurant. &nbsp; So even when the stock goes down, keep in mind the building is not gone, it just means that someone decided that that the building or the brand or whatever was worth a little less. &nbsp; On average, if the heuristic of history is a guide, the market goes up in the long run.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Then there are index funds, “algorithmic funds”, often meant to represent all or part of the market. &nbsp; The S&amp;P 500 and even the Dow Jones fall into this category, both picking the largest companies in the market in an effort to represent the market as a whole. &nbsp; There are even funds that hold every stock in the market. &nbsp; In effect, these give you the ‘average’ of the market or some subsection of the market.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> The last stock market option is an actively traded funds. &nbsp; These funds hire experts to gauge the market and invest in what they think are the best companies. &nbsp;Since you are hiring experts, it costs more and thus you have higher fees. &nbsp; The question is, are they worth the cost? &nbsp; Can they outperform average? &nbsp;Or perhaps, flipping it on its head, can you pick a fund manager who can out perform the index fund? &nbsp;Keep in mind, <a href="; target="_blank">Warren Buffet</a> from 1994-2014 made about 12.5% interest compare to the S&amp;P’s 9%.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Of course you could choose to not invest at all. &nbsp;Keep in mind that not investing is not actually a 100% foolproof way of protecting you. &nbsp;Inaction is still an action. &nbsp;First of all, you are being taxed on your income, where as in some countries investing is tax deductible. &nbsp;Furthermore, cash can be hurt by inflation. &nbsp;Even if all you did was save cash and could save enough, when you retire, your cash will spend down faster due to a lack of interest, putting you at risk of running out of retirement.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> In my opinion, unless you have the time, talent and interest, index funds make things much simpler. &nbsp;Unless your stock manager is the next Buffet, 1-2% fees will be more expensive than the potentially better outcome they might provide. &nbsp; However, if you’re a numbers expert or you think you know which mangers will make great investments, go for it! Ultimately you should test these assumptions. <br /> <br /></div> <div> <h3> How Much Do I Need?</h3> </div> <div> <br /> The final piece to this puzzle is how much do you need to save for retirement? &nbsp;Earlier I said stocks were a good long-term investment, but how long is long term? &nbsp;Long term is from the day you retire to the end of your life or beyond. &nbsp; So, will your money last your lifetime? &nbsp;More interestingly, can you make your money self-sustaining, using the history heuristic as a reasonable guide on returns? &nbsp; It turns out the second question is actually reasonably easy to test. &nbsp;Using the several studies on withdrawal rates show that <a href="; target="_blank">approximately 4%</a> is a safe withdrawal rate assuming the past is a reasonable guide. &nbsp; And while I admit that nothing is guaranteed, it's a useful starting place.&nbsp;</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> With 4% as our “typical” case, we can start with the assumption that 25 times the current expenses will yield you a safe amount of income. &nbsp; That is to say, if you take out your current expenses from your stocks/bonds, you will take out 4% of the total fund. &nbsp; These studies often found people would grow multiple times the wealth they start with, but 4% was for the worst year to start retirement and not run out of money. &nbsp;Keep in mind your taxes, health care, driving and childcare expenses may change when you retire, but in most cases expenses will go down. &nbsp; So if you use your current expenses, you're likely to have a reasonable safety net. &nbsp;Obviously this is critical to your retirement, so you’ll want to test this piece carefully with a lot of what if scenarios. &nbsp;Tour through your retirement with costs of new hobbies or traveling and with some stress tests, such as you have lots of expense for a few years in the beginning, middle and end of your life.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Have you tested your retirement plan lately?<br /> <br /> <h3> Post Scripts</h3> <br /> In writing this post, I did a lot of research, not all of which fit the nice format of an article. &nbsp; So, in a mostly unformatted way, here are some additional thoughts to consider:<br /> <br /> <ul> <li>Testers often make a <a href="; target="_blank">higher salary</a>&nbsp;than the average <a href="; target="_blank">US household income</a> (and often that is a two person working household).</li> <li>The data seems clear, at best only a few people can actively beat the market <a href="; target="_blank">long term</a>. However, that is a theory that can be put to the <a href="; target="_blank">test</a>. &nbsp; Even active fund managers claim that there is a <a href="; target="_blank">better than 50% chance that a index fund</a> will outperform an active fund, and it is unclear if that includes fees.</li> <li>This is a nice simple explanation of the <a href="; target="_blank">business cycle</a> and why it exists.</li> <li>The S&amp;P 500 is more an American index. &nbsp; While I was not researching how Europeans invest, I did run into an <a href="; target="_blank">interesting article</a> with different investment methods for Europeans, including investing in the US market. &nbsp;I have no opinion on the validity nor usefulness of this, as this is not a problem I have faced.</li> </ul> <div> One final thing I wish to make clear is I'm not making any profit from this blog post. &nbsp;I make no endorsement of any particular investment strategy, I simply suggest you do the research now, when it is easier to plan for retirement rather than waiting until it's too late.</div> </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> For anyone who has made it this far, I do have a query. &nbsp;I'd like to know, is this content useful? &nbsp; Is it too far from testing to be of value or does it still feel connected to testing? &nbsp; Please tell me by writing a comment below.</div> +00002015-11-09T13:09:08.716-07:00DevelopmentDotNetIntroductionMoney PigRequirementsTestThinkingNew Adventures in Software TestingI recently described my <a href="2015/07/my-many-years-in-testing-and-automation.html" target="_blank">past years</a> in testing, but this post is more about the future, using data to back it up. &nbsp; However, we can only look into the future using the <a href="; target="_blank">mirror of of the past</a>. &nbsp; In writing my last 70 or so articles, I have gather a good number of thoughts, and I have posted on average 1-2 in depth posts a month. &nbsp; In using blogger's data, I had assumed that I was reaching an audience of substance. &nbsp; However, in investigating my actual reach, it is substantially smaller than I thought. &nbsp;I have two purposes for writing. &nbsp; One is to collect my own thoughts, the other is to document my ideas for others to use. &nbsp;Until today.<br /> <br /> I am backing away from my editorial adventures for the time being in order to focus on another adventure. &nbsp; But wait, don't leave yet. &nbsp; You've not even asked what it is. &nbsp;Well, here is the last article I plan to write in the near future.<br /> <br /> Often times, I have been asked what sort of code someone should write when they want to learn to write code. &nbsp;I often come back with the reply, well what sorts of problems do you want to solve? &nbsp; Why write code at all? &nbsp; If you have no vision for what to write, being motivated to write code can be incredibly hard. &nbsp;Even if the answer is I want to write web applications to get a job, that at least provides a hint into the motivations and what sorts of study you need. &nbsp; Some people have no focus at all and just want to do "something cool". &nbsp;I have found these people rarely have the interest in completing projects, as cool moves so fast.<br /> <br /> In learning to code, I started out with games, like most other people my age. &nbsp;I built up a set of programs over the years, some of which I spent years developing. &nbsp;Often times, these programs were designed for a particular need I experienced. &nbsp;Like my advice, I work on what I find I need rather than what is cool. &nbsp;Several years ago I became a land lord and found I needed a way to track my write offs. &nbsp;I also had a job interview that involved PHP, so I wrote a simple tool to track write offs using PHP and Postgres. &nbsp;I didn't get the job. &nbsp; My PHP application was clunky and required me to record all the data by hand, yet my bank knew about these transactions. &nbsp; Why couldn't I just automate the task? &nbsp;I didn't enjoy working in PHP so I moved to .net and started building a windows application.<br /> <br /> I worked for about 3 weeks and had a rough framework designed, primarily using reflections and a Excel-like control. &nbsp;I started to refine it and within a month I had an application I was happy with. &nbsp;I kept refining it over a few years, but it was always just meant for me. &nbsp;I fixed big bugs, but it was meant to please me, so I didn't worry too much about it.<br /> <br /> Then, just this last year, my boss, Isaac asked me a question. &nbsp; He asked me if I was ever going to sell my project. &nbsp;I thought a while around this and decided it would be a interesting effort and a good learning experience. &nbsp;I have always wanted to go to work for myself, so why not? &nbsp;I started in on my adventure. &nbsp; My adventure included multiple iterations and efforts. &nbsp; Many of these efforts have been running parallel over the last year.<br /> <br /> <h3> What Features Do I Need?</h3> <div> <br /> I knew what I needed. &nbsp;I needed one serious feature, the ability to mark items as write offs. &nbsp; No one else except for the massive applications supported that sort of feature. &nbsp; These mazes of confusion and madness were more complex than I wanted. &nbsp; Most of the small open source applications either didn't support the feature or were equally complicated. &nbsp;Furthermore, the thing I personally needed only a little is one of the big words in personal financing, budgeting. &nbsp; So, like the heuristic of comparable products, I started examining other products. &nbsp;I worked on developing features and creating test maps around what would need testing. &nbsp; But more on that later.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> This is a more complex question than you might otherwise think. &nbsp; For example, what does your EULA look like? &nbsp; How do you authenticate your key? &nbsp; What other non-functional requirements am I missing? &nbsp;I developed a large list of requirements and had to build them all out.<br /> <br /></div> <div> <h3> How Do I Start a Business?</h3> </div> <div> <br /> I had to start investigating how to license software. &nbsp;Even the word license is tricky, as I don't sell software, I license its usage. &nbsp; That affects taxes. &nbsp; You have to gather all sorts of documentation for the government to allow you to start a business. &nbsp; Then there is the logo. &nbsp; What about the store front? &nbsp; The list goes on and on. &nbsp; On the good side, I have no employees, so I that simplifies a great deal. <br /> <br /></div> <div> <h3> <span style="font-size: 18.72px;">Marketing?</span></h3> <br /> Let me be frank, to the few people who read this regularly. &nbsp;I'm not good at marketing. &nbsp;I choose privacy over announcing my existence over and over again. &nbsp; To make even a personal blog big, it appears one must do lots of advertising. &nbsp;Isaac suggested it takes 2 years of effort to maybe hit it big, ignoring Black Swans. &nbsp;I still don't have a personal twitter handle, although I do have one for business to my chagrin. &nbsp; This will likely be the hardest part for me. &nbsp;I have a few tweets queued up, and several blog posts about personal finance written. &nbsp;Hopefully my efforts will pay off, but one never knows.<br /> <br /> I also am starting to learn about Google Ads and Bing Ads. &nbsp; In reality, things are way more complicated than you might imagine. &nbsp;Google's Ad system is crazy-complicated. &nbsp;Campaigns connect to Ads which tie to keywords or to a screen scrapper Google uses. &nbsp;Google Ads use a complicated bidding system where the winner doesn't pay what they bid but the max the last guy bid. &nbsp; The more I learn the more I learn I know nothing. <br /> <br /> <h3> Documentation?</h3> <br /> I grabbed a free for a year AWS instance of a wiki system and started writing. &nbsp;I kept writing and writing. &nbsp;I have written documentation for several open source systems and have done some fairly extensive documentation in the past. &nbsp; In this case, I tried tackling the problem from several different ways. &nbsp; The first way I tried was to write out different features of the system. &nbsp; Then I tried writing things from a different tact. &nbsp;I wrote about how you can accomplish tasks.<br /> <br /> <h3> Testing?</h3> </div> <div> <br /> As I built out new features, I discovered how complicated my code base started to get. &nbsp;I had never done any serious regression on my work since it was built just for me. &nbsp;I had added features I thought might be useful, but it was still poorly tested. &nbsp; So I built up a list of all the features and major feature interactions and kept a copy in google docs. &nbsp;Once my program was in a mostly stable state I started rigorously testing it. &nbsp;I wish I could claim I didn't find any bugs, but that would not be true. &nbsp;Instead, I found more than two dozen bugs. &nbsp; Many of them were relatively minor, others were usability. &nbsp; My list of needed features grew even larger. &nbsp;I spent 10-20 hours a week for several weeks testing while I spent my normal time on my day job.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> One interesting thing I want to note to all my fellow testers is how hard it is to do both the software development and testing. &nbsp; While I certainly did testing, I found giving some time between developing the code and doing in depth testing gave me some time to forget exactly how I coded something. &nbsp; That way, my bias in expectations would be gone, allowing me to note usability issues much more clearly. &nbsp;I also noticed how it was hard to remain motivated. &nbsp;Testing for 40 hours a week and then going home and doing more of the same is a challenge. &nbsp; If you're on a death march, imagine how unmotivated a developer is to do any testing of their software.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> <h3> Shipping is a Feature</h3> </div> <div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="; width="200" /></a></div> Ultimately, I got my application to a stable state. &nbsp; While I do still occasionally find a bug, I have not found any big bugs in weeks. &nbsp;I am still doing occasional testing in that I use it for myself. &nbsp;I do find value in some of the new features I have added in the past 12 months, so I spend more time in my application than I use to. &nbsp; It's still fairly trim compared to many of my competitors, but I think that is a feature. &nbsp;Simpler system often have their own sort of value. &nbsp;I think it is ready for release. &nbsp; So, on Oct 31st, I released my program, <a href="; target="_blank">Money Pig</a>, into the world.<br /> <br /> <br /> <br /></div> <div> <br /></div> <div> I'm also stepping away from our blog for a while, while I work on Money Pig. &nbsp;I shall return!</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> - 75 Links with Commentary on Testing, Security, Tech and LifeI have a friend who wants to get into security testing and asked for my help in broadening their education. &nbsp;I assumed that my friend would have a good number of links on security, and so I would try to start with a broader set of testing knowledge. &nbsp; They have a degree and know basic computer science, but in discussing needs, I decided that my primary goal would be to provide a broader understanding around testing. &nbsp;I started by emailing some links I thought might be useful... but that quickly became clear that it was less manageable, so over a few months I put together groups of links I thought might be of value into a Google Doc.<br /> <br /> I also wrote some notes on why I thought they were of value for my friend. &nbsp; It should be noted that I cite myself frequently. &nbsp; This is not because I'm full of myself but because I addressed specific questions my friend had and felt that my research + links I had in my posts would be of some benefit. &nbsp;I did do some light editing of my notes, removing personal comments for privacy reasons, but this is roughly what I came up with.<br /> <br /> One limitation to this sort of document is I could go on forever. &nbsp;I certainly could have written several dozen posts around these links. &nbsp; Before I turn you loose to all these links, let me give some advice. &nbsp;I look in detail for things I need to know soon and skim general topics for data I might value in the future. &nbsp; It’s a method that allows me to work well with a large set of disparate data. &nbsp; It’s why I can talk about all sorts of subjects at some level, but am not an expert in any. &nbsp;Knowing who actually is worth reading helps me filter the 'must reads' from the 'skims'. &nbsp; So as you look at these links, look for what you want to learn about, and then look at the author. &nbsp; If the data is useful, look for more of that author, even links I did not suggest. If it wasn't helpful, try a different author. &nbsp; If you try about 3 different links in a row in this set, and all are not useful, either you are not primed to learn about the subject, or the type of data/authors I have gathered are not optimal for how you learn. &nbsp; You will have to decide which.<br /> <br /> Happy reading!<br /> <br /> <h4>Links I Came Up With Before I Started Organizing [Mostly Test]</h4><br /> <table border="1"><tbody> <tr> <td><b><br /> </b> <b>Link</b></td> <td><b><br /> </b> <b>JCD's notes</b></td> </tr> <tr><td><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed5-b416-f668-27cd7f6be047"><a href="2015/01/leveling-up-your-testing-skills.html" style="text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">2015/01/leveling-up-your-testing-skills.html</span></a><span style="font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></span></td><td><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed5-ec6e-a533-0b97d872559b"><span style="font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">I literally wrote this for people trying to improve themselves.</span></span></td></tr> <tr><td><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed7-7731-168b-9933c8cc1d57"><a href="; style="text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> style="font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></span></td><td><span style="font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; line-height: 1.2; white-space: pre-wrap;">Lectures 2,3,5,6 in particular. &nbsp; They are about 30 mins per lecture. &nbsp;Great testing stuff.</span><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed6-53f9-61b7-dfa8c2251145"></span><br /> <span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed6-53f9-61b7-dfa8c2251145"> </span> <br /> <div><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed6-53f9-61b7-dfa8c2251145"><span style="font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed6-f0de-1856-1a758262f887"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline;">The lecture has power point slides, which can be downloaded and are useful by themselves, HOWEVER, he talks about different points not just captured in the slides.</span></span></span></span></div><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed6-53f9-61b7-dfa8c2251145"> </span></td></tr> <tr><td><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed7-10ac-5dd8-379c8ea6d94b"><a href="2013/09/where-cdt-fails-rebuttal.html" style="text-decoration: none;"><span style="color: #1155cc; font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; text-decoration: underline; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">2013/09/where-cdt-fails-rebuttal.html</span></a><span style="font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> </span></span></td><td><span id="docs-internal-guid-da267267-bed7-a97f-cc9b-84c1bf093810"><span style="font-family: &quot;arial&quot;; font-size: 14.6667px; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Isaac’s effort to describe what testers should learn in ‘levels’.
