LA, San Bernardino book events mark ROUTE 66 RAILWAY DAY on Saturday, May 12
Celebrate the historic relationship of Route 66 and the Santa Fe Railway in California with “Route 66 Railway Day” on Saturday, May 12. It’s a family-friendly event on the rails and in two historic Southern California train stations, inspired by the colorful coffee table book Route 66 Railway.
Hosted by the California Historic Route 66 Association, railfans and highway fans can choose from three great opportunities, or combine them into an entire day of fun and exploration.
Los Angeles Union Station, 10-11:30 am:
Enjoy a brief presentation by author Elrond Lawrence about Union Station history and significance with an informal walking tour of the station: We’ll gather at the information desk (just inside the street entrance) before 10:00 am. Union Station is located at 800 N. Alameda in Los Angeles. Visit the station website at www.unionstationla.com.
Metrolink ride to San Bernardino
Buy a weekend Metrolink pass at Union Station (only $10!), get food to go at the station, and board a Metrolink train to San Bernardino for the afternoon event at the depot museum. We will assemble in a single rail car on train 362, which departs LA at 12:10 pm and arrives San Bernardino at 1:48 pm. (*See Metrolink advisory below.) Along the way, author Elrond Lawrence will provide commentary on his book Route 66 Railway and about the former Santa Fe route and Route 66 between LA and San Bernardino.
San Bernardino historic Santa Fe station, 2 pm to 4:30 pm
Enjoy a separate presentation by the author at the Santa Fe Depot in San Bernardino, with a book signing and tours of the depot and railroad museum. Route 66 Railway books will be available to buy at the museum gift shop for $35 plus tax. The station is located at 1170 W. Third St. in San Bernardino; visit the museum website at www.sbdepotmuseum.com.
The event is free except for the $10 weekend Metrolink pass and books. Register for the day at this Eventbrite link.
5/2 UPDATE – Metrolink has announced track maintenance on May 12-13 which will cause 45-minute delays on the San Bernardino Line. See this link for details.
We encourage travel to Union Station by Metro or Metrolink to avoid traffic. Information can be found at www.metrolinktrains.com and www.metro.net
Route 66 Railway is published by the Los Angeles Railroad Heritage Foundation, located at www.larhf.org. Elrond and LARHF are also on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

On Friday, April 7, I’ll be signing books and showing photography at the National Steinbeck Center in downtown Salinas … where we held the very first launch event for the first edition of Route 66 Railway in fall 2008. Download the official press release here or check it out below. An event flyer can be downloaded and printed by clicking here.
For model railroading fans, the Monterey & Salinas Valley Railroad museum will be open just a block away, in the Railway Express Building next to the Amtrak station, from 5-8 pm.
Local Author Elrond Lawrence to Sign Copies of Route 66 Railway at National Steinbeck Center, April 7
Salinas author Elrond Lawrence will sign copies of his coffee table book Route 66 Railway on Friday, April 7, at the National Steinbeck Center in downtown Salinas. Part of the First Fridays Art Walk, the signing event will take place from 4:30-7 pm. The public can enjoy the Steinbeck Center’s permanent exhibit, plus wine tasting and live bluegrass music from Clear Blue Clay.
Route 66 Railway explores the 90-year relationship between famed U.S Highway 66 and the Santa Fe Railway in the American Southwest, featuring dramatic color photography and lively essays. It examines the rise, fall and rebirth of these iconic routes, taking the reader on a journey that spans nine decades and more than 800 miles from California to New Mexico. A revised and expanded second edition of the book is now available six years after the first edition sold out.
During the April 7 signing event, Elrond will also discuss his 30 years of photographing America’s historic railroads, vintage highways, forgotten towns, and other treasures across California and the Southwest. Elrond’s writing and photography appears in magazines, books, calendars and advertising; sample work can be viewed at his website, www.66rails.com.

The second edition of my Route 66 Railway book — with 16 extra pages plus updated photos and text — is now available at www.larhf.org, Amazon, and retailers nationwide. I’m happy to announce that book signing events are now being scheduled. The first two events will be in March and early April, with more planned for southern California.
On Saturday, March 18, we attended Winterail, the annual railroad photography exposition and merchandise show in its new home in Corvallis, Oregon. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth!
On Friday evening, April 7, I’ll be signing books at the National Steinbeck Center in oldtown Salinas, Cal. from 4:30-7 pm as part of the First Fridays Art Walk. The center’s John Steinbeck exhibits will be open for viewing at no charge, and you can also enjoy wine-tasting and live bluegrass music from Clear Blue Clay. Around 6pm I’ll talk about the book and show some photography. The press release can be read here.
A third event is being planned for historic Philippe’s restaurant in downtown LA, which will feature dinner, an author’s talk, and photo show. Watch for a May date to be announced soon. Thanks for your support!

Expanded second edition! 16 more pages! Order in time for the holidays!
Now available, Route 66 Railway is the only book to explore the relationship between the Santa Fe/BNSF Railways and historic U.S. 66 in the Southwest, using dramatic color photography and engaging text. Download an order form here or visit www.larhf.org.
For 90 years and over 800 miles, the highway and railroad have been constant companions through California, Arizona and New Mexico. This hardcover book is a visual road trip across these iconic routes. Each has experienced rise, fall and rebirth. Route 66 has seen a renaissance among travelers seeking the mythic American road trip, far from soulless Interstates. The former Santa Fe (now BNSF Railway) is one of America’s busiest railroads — up to 100 trains a day pace the highway through deserts, forests, mountain passes, cities, and dusty towns.
Published by the Los Angeles Railroad Heritage Foundation, Route 66 Railway takes you over Cajon Pass and the Mojave Desert, across the Arizona Divide, and past New Mexico’s red mesas to Albuquerque and to the Midwest. Enjoy nearly 300 images of modern and classic trains, vintage motels, neon diners, quirky tourist shops, and spectacular scenery.

Winterail Weekend Photo Album

Every year railfans make a pilgrimage to the most unlikely of “hot spots” — Stockton, California, in the heart of California’s Central Valley. The occasion is Winterail, a photography and multimedia show that celebrated its 35th anniversary this year. The drive to and from Winterail is half the fun of going — the other half is seeing old friends and catching up in the dealers’ room. This year I made a little photo gallery of the three-day weekend, including some incredible scenes of almond blossoms that we discovered while following the BNSF rail line near Modesto. New Trains Article: Railroading Below Sea Level

East of Palm Springs lies the Salton Sea, a beautiful but desolate place that developers once touted as the next great water resort. While those dreams were swept away, Union Pacific’s Yuma Subdivision hosts up to 35 trains a day through this searing desert terrain. A new article in Trains magazine examines the shared history of the sea and its companion railroad: tour this vital rail corridor that passes old seaside towns and a border patrol checkpoint straight out of “Border Wars.”
Learn more about the March 2013 issue here. As a bonus, check out an online gallery of 10 Salton Sea railroading pictures by clicking here.
And to learn more about the Sea, visit the Salton Sea History Museum and Visitors Center.
