I made it for productivity. The post nSkid Scambait Tool appeared first on Abeon Tech. ]]> nSkid is a simple Pthon script to generate phone numbers for tech support scammers. What does nSkid do? This python scam baiting tool checks several Google search results pages for phone numbers reported to scam identification databases. It is a work in progress, but I plan to expand it at some point. nSkid currently only shows results for Amazon tech support scams and Microsoft tech-support scams. You can choose to crawl numbers from the past day, past hour, or past week. Numbers from the past day is the suggested starting option. You can then narrow it to last hour if you get a lot of dead results. The script in action It will currently only return a maximum of 40 results. There is a bug with detecting no results, which I will fix in the next update. I plan to add some extra functionality, such as better selection of, or input for scam types. I could do with finding extra databases to check SERPs for (thanks Nomorobo & RoboKiller). Could be an idea to integrate this with a few other tools to make an all-in-one style tool. It uses Python3 and pretty basic code. Please always double check the numbers are actual scammers, and be nice to them. They’re still just people too. Also, please remember that the scammer’s change numbers often. So don’t assume they’re scammers, or complain if they’re all dead. They number hop a lot. Any suggestions or ideas are very much welcome! I would love to hear feedback on additional tools for scambaiting, both to improve productivity, and just to have fun. So, feel free to submit code suggestions on GitHub, reply below or use the forum to let me know nSkid is now avaible as a Discord bot, so you can scam bait without having to leave your favourite servers. It’s currently limited to the Abeon Tech Discord server, bit I will roll it out after I’ve made it more stable and reliable. I also plan to add extra functionality, but this will always be one step behind our official version. A full example of how XSS can lead to full account takeover. The post An XSS attack in action appeared first on Abeon Tech. ]]> Cross site scripting attacks, commonly called XSS, are becoming more and more prevalent as the power of JavaScript has evolved way beyond simple DOM manipulation. Using the power of embeded JavaScript can be beneficial for an attacker for several reasons including… HiJacking login sessions (covered in this article)Inserting malicious codeUsing resources of your visitors/websiteInserting links to undesirable websitesStealing sensitive information XSS? It’s just a popup! The common misconception of XSS attacks is that they are benign and of no real significance. Injecting HTML and JavaScript into a page was, once upon-a-time, fairly pointless and meant little more than funky stuff happening to the user inputting the malicious data. The power of JavaScript and now HTML, with offline storage and heavy inbuilt DOM manipulation, has grown exponentially over the past few years. There are many notable instances of malicious JavaScript deployment being used for exploitation very effectively. Cross Site Scripting attacks have been used against the majority of big social media websites, among others, with notable mentions including… Twitter suffered an account hijacking exploit, which snared well over 100,000 Twitter accounts. A recent Yahoo XSS exploit lead to many comprimised accounts but the true number is unknown. FaceBook has been plagued by vulnerabilities, mostly due to it’s popularity. A notable FaceBook XSS flaw was recently discovered in it’s insant messaging JavaScipt handling which could lead to full access to the target’s private messages. Gmail has been susceptible to several stored and reflected Cross Site Scripting attacks over the past few years. A vulnerability was introduced when Google+ integration was rolled out and lead to complete account takeover. Anonymous recently used very simple JavaScript deployment in a very effective manner by inserting a script called “The Hive”, which is a JavaScript based Ddos tool. The aim was simple: take down a well known, and possibly highest value target of all; the Department of Justic. They were successful and it required very little resources compared to previous Ddos attacks. There are many more examples, but that should be enough to scare even the laziest developers. An XSS Cookie Stealer In Action The process of hijacking a user’s session is fairly straight forward but the required code usually takes a little tweaking, depending on the target. The idea is simple: find a point to inject JavaScript, get someone with escalated permissions to visit the page, log their information and replace your current login with theirs. The attackflow is simple: Find a vulnerabilityCreate a payloadEntice an admin/staff/user to visit the desired URLClone their session or cookieLogin as victim (Admin?)???Profit!!! Ok so jokes of profit aside, the code required to be deployed on the target site is usually minimal as most of the work happens in a small script used to capture the data. Only two files are required – one to process the data and one to store the logged information (it could be combined into one file, but this is an example on protection… Not skiddie copy/pasta material!). Introducing “Teh Cookie Monster!” I spent some time creating a simple cookie logger to demonstrate how this attack could take place. The main script — “cookie-monster.php” — will handle the data collected and “cookie-jar.txt” will simply log the cookies and other information we grab. The aim of the script was to log all cookies from our target site to a file and allow them to be viewed. The code below is a modified working example that we use internally to help with penetration testing and script hardening. File: cookie-monster.php In order for the above code to work we need to embed some pretty simple JavaScript into our target website… The line of code above will load our script as a blank image and appear to do nothing to the user. The cookie-monster.php script will grab the visitors cookie along with other data, then save it to cookie-jar.txt for later viewing. This could be expanded to return a valid image. We have our code and we know what to do, so let’s use Damn Vulnerable Web Application as an example. I have it installed on my localhost and have two accounts – “admin” and “abeon”. I login as “abeon” and create a malicious URL to send to “admin”. This is where the uber-l337 hacking skillz come in handy… We have to make the page attract the admins attention without causing alarm. There are many tactics but an effective one seems to be pretending to report an issue, so kind of break the page but leave it intact enough so as to not arouse suspicion. Something like this should do… Yup, that’s right. A long and ugly URL which is only partially encoded and not very well. This is intentional as the user will see the “I BROKE IT” message clearly but will probably miss the script tags. There are many ways to obfuscate the payload such as mixed encoding, internal redirect, URL shortening services, external retrieval and more. cookie-monster.php will log the information when someone clicks the link and display the saved data. View the cookies by visiting the script’s URL with the mode set as 1 and password as defined at the top of the script: http://example.com/cookie-monster.php?mode=1&pswd=123-derpy_skid-321 There are many ways to edit cookies but browser plugins are the most popular. Edit this cookie is a useful cookie editor plugin for Chrome. Cookies Quick Manager is very similar, but for FireFox. Protecting Against XSS Attacks Defending against Cross Site Scripting attacks is handled in a similar way to most other forms of exploitation: validation and sanitization of all data is a must! The best way to defend against malicious user input is to validate any data that could cause harm, such as checking for a valid email address or phone number, and sanitize any data that is displayed back to the user by converting to benign code. PHP’s inbuilt htmlentities and htmlspecialchars functions handle both tasks in a very similar fashion. htmlspecialchars converts only 5 characters while htmlentities will convert any HTML characters into their representative counterparts. For this reason, it’s advisable to use htmlentities with both ENT_QUOTES and UTF-8 flags set as below. Setting ENT_QUOTES will convert both single and double quotes which is essential as both can cause serious problems for security. Using the UTF-8 encoding flag is also very important when using ENT_QUOTES as it defines the encoding used and can help to prevent bypassing using obfuscated code. A final word of warning:This example focuses on reflected XSS attacks. A stored XSS vulnerability can be far more damaging as any visitor to the site can be affected – not just those visiting malicious links. The biggest offender for XSS attacks is without a doubt search forms. Any data a user can alter should be considered a potential risk. Creating validation and sanitization functions through which data can be passed is always easier and more reliable than adhoc coding. There are frameworks and pre-built classes specifically for validation but altering or further developing these can be difficult. They have a huge attack surface. The post Hacking My Bank. For teh lulz. appeared first on Abeon Tech. ]]> I have around 17 years experience making people feel bad by finding errors in their code. I like to think I’m pretty good at it. My computing hobby developed into a career in internet marketing as services moved online. Converting knowledge from my hobby to improve the efficacy of marketing campaigns was easier than hacking banks… Or so I thought. I was recently employed by the leading marketing agency located in Brighton. They are owned by a large multinational conglomerate which reported an anual revenue of $10 billion in 2014… For Lulz – And To Protect My Mortgage Legal disclaimer: I believe in following the laws of both the UK and host country when conducting security research. As the UK is one of the most oppressive regimes for a white hat hacker, it’s a good starting point from which I must restrict my activities. Jail isn’t fun. Been there. done that, got the t-shirt. The t-shirts itch. Most white hat hackers publicise posts to show weaknesses in big institutions, demonstrate skill and/or gloat. If I’m being honest, I mocked the military more because I could than I wanted them to fix the issue. I looked into security risks with Barclays for two reasons; I have a mortgage with them and I worked on their marketing campaign. A security breach would have been both professionally and personally inconvenient. I also assumed banking security had moved on from the days of sa:blank. The “SSL = Secure” Myth My initial research into the Barclays websites was fairly brief and in preperation for a job interview. It was obvious that the SSL implementation was very insecure and could easily allow MiTM attacks. Until patched, all it would have taken was a malicious access point setup in a busy branch (London, Brighton, etc) and one could easily exfiltrate account data for malicious purposes. The first issue I reported was a redundant SSL cert installed on m.barclays.co.uk. The combination of a weak certificate and poorly configured server meant that customer data was at serious risk. The attack vector is somewhat esoteric, so I’ll omit it for brevity. I looked for further problems when I had a little more time… XSS (Cross-Site Scripting) I ran domains I suspected to be controlled by Barclays through a semi-automated XSS scanner I developed about a ago. I got a hit on barclaycardcentre.es. The hit was confirmed as McAfee had marked the website as being used as a phishing site. I reported the PoC and moved on… barclaycardcentre.es/busqueda?criterio=1'autofocus/onfocus='prompt(String.fromCharCode(88,83,83)) After starting work on their marketing campaign I took another look at their network. I ran another list of Barclays domains through my XSS script. This time I spotted a similar XSS issue in barx.com, a website dedicated to stock trading… barx.com/search-results.html?to=1451624400000&q=barclays "><svg/onload=prompt(/XSS/)>&from=1420088400000 I was a little concerned about how insecure my mortgage providers where by this point. I just decided to focus on the marketing campaign and try to get the security issues fixed when I could. Then I found a winning fail… Public Application Connection Details I discovered the most painful security issue in the Barclays network while looking for content related issues during an SEO audit. Two pages on the apps.barclays.mobi domain were showing PHP code as HTML, which seemed odd… Both pages where saved in Google’s cache, so have been visible to the public for a while… Checking the page source code showed connection details for the application… $login = new MDG_ApplicationLogin('*snip*', '*snip*', '*snip*'); Enumerating a database once you have the application login details is fairly rudimentary. Having an admin username / password publicly available on a world leading bank is definitely a winning fail. The best case scenario is exfiltrated data. A proficient hacker will root the box and move through the network. Stating The Obvious It should go without saying but unfortunatly doesn’t; a global bank with total assets in the region of £1.12 trillion, and an entire team of security specialists, shouldn’t suffer from such basic security issues. During my brief employment for the McDonald’s of marketing, I was allotted 1 hour 30 minutes to penetration test their portfolio of well known clients. I managed to find exploits on all of them. Which is just sad. As always, the issues were fixed within days when I got in touch with the right person. The problem is that it can take months to get the right contact. Ethical hackers are often given free swag as a way of saying thanks. It helps promote the companies we hack and they get secured in the process. All I received were legal threats from my previous employer. Disclosure Timeline June 2015 – Initial report made over the phone. Of course I took the piss. Also, hacking hackers bonus content. The post Mocking the Military; Hacking Hackers appeared first on Abeon Tech. ]]> Disclaimer: This post is probably not safe for work. Bad language, political views, and oxford commas aplenty. This article covers a few basic cross site scripting bugs in Department of Defence and Ghost Security websites. The idea is to highlight how even the most security conscience among us can forget to check for the most basic exploits. I love Einstein. I have always had a passion for physics, relativity, and politics. A little cited quote from the aforementioned scientific genius is… Mocking the military As much as I hate murder, the recent escalation of terrorism has been far worse. Another idol of mine – Bill Hicks – famously said: “I was in the unenviable position of being for the war, but against the troops. And ah… Not the most popular stance I’ve ever taken on an issue”. War is bad, m’kay. Terrorism is worse, m’kaaay… Getting on with it. Cross site scripting is one of the easiest exploits to protect against, yet is one of the most prolific. The example below is a perfect example of an easily overlooked bug in a website that could cause a lot of damage. Simply altering a URL on the Department of Defence website allowed any HTML to get shown in the PDF document: The little URL that could The vulnerable page was: ] .... The Department of Defence responded quickly and a fix was rolled out within 24 hours. They confirmed the logic issue was fixed as there were several affected pages. I imagine the reply was sent through gritted teeth, but it got fixed and everyone is happy. Mostly. I always email the site owner, wait 12 weeks, then try additional contact to get the issue resolved. Certain religious extremist groups may not be as helpful. My sardonic proof of concept was intended to get a reaction. The vast majority of vulnerabilities go unfixed for months, even in government websites. I have reported hundreds of exploits on websites ranging from a plumber’s personal blog to wikileaks. Hacking hackers So we’ve mocked the military. Why not hack the hackers? I tried to use the same simple technique on a group I’ve morally supported for a while. Ghost Security are a splinter-group of Anonymous which specialise in combating the spread of religious extremism on the internet. Surely, the uber-1337 hax0rz can protect against a simple XSS vector? Sadly not. Even hackers make mistakes. GhostSec are great guys and fighting for the right team by taking down extremists. I decided to check their website because T.V kills brain cells. Within about 30 seconds I found a validation error in their hostchecker tool: I notified them about this on Twitter. They added some basic input validation, replying with: “just feeding our XSS database ty”. Erm… @Windev01, @TorReaper, @ComediAnon. Fix please? pic.twitter.com/YZzDb0LOIL— Mr Adam Davies (@mradamdavies) December 11, 2015 The proof of concept code used was, as always, basic: derp.com/?pwn=1&"><img src=x onerror=prompt(/XSS/)> They eventually put some XSS security in place. I thought I’d test the hacker’s anti-hacker protection. Only a basic filter had been put in place: A common XSS WAF bypass technique worked. It took about 2 minutes: derp.com/?pwn="><marquee loop=1 width=0 onfinish=1/prompt`/XSSPOSED/`>derp</marquee> The rest of the site seemed fairly secure so I moved on, after the obligatory bragging on social media. I read another story about them around 4 months later, so decided to check the once secure site. XSS number 3… *sigh* #XSS in your domain lookup tool this time. @TorReaper, @_Ransacker? pic.twitter.com/g3Xuw6ZETS— Mr Adam Davies (@mradamdavies) March 8, 2016 Same simple technique, different page. Funnily enough I didn’t get a reply this time. Trash or treasure? The point of this rant is that even the the experts make simple mistakes. The only real difference is scale of impact. If I had been trying to recruit bad people to do silly things, it would be a very different conversation. From making websites dance, to hijacking accounts or stealing bank data… If I can make your website dance, what are the bad guys doing? The code isn’t that different. Update I have been informed that Ghost Sec and Ghost Security are different entities. One apparently riding the fame of the other. The source is reliable and respected, so I trust it. The group split and skidz formed GhostSec. The story holds true as, initially, they didn’t seem to think XSS was an issue. According to press-releases, the original Ghost Security have beem known to use XSS and phishing techniques to hijack accounts. So, check out ghostsecuritygroup.com for comparison. Feedback The most frustrating thing is that cross site scripting attacks are the easiest to test for, most basic to protect against, indicative of weak security, and a risk on many levels. I’ve used similar techniques to circumvent world leading Web Application Firewalls, then helping to get patched, obviously. I am genuinely curious as to why such basic exploits are still on such high priority websites. Could it be the budget is too small? Maybe the training isn’t good enough? I’d really like to read comments from professionals and hackers alike, but hey, this is the internet – try to XSS my comment form if you must The post Mocking the Military; Hacking Hackers appeared first on Abeon Tech. ]]> security/mocking-military-hacking-hackers/feed/ 0 156 Scoot.co.uk XSS security/scoot-sun-independent-xss/ security/scoot-sun-independent-xss/#respond Fri, 17 Apr 2015 02:26:00 +0000 ?p=1181 Stored XSS in several nationwide UK newspapers. Always on the lookout for opportunities from which links and/or citations can be gleaned. Often, while looking for link placements, I find sites with security vulnerabilities. I always try to work with affected sites to help secure the attack vector with mixed results. More often than not the sites get patched and everyone is happy. Sometimes I get ignored. Sometimes I get a generic “we will fix it” reply but the exploit gets ignored. The site in question passes the information stored on its site onto several authoritative websites in the UK, some of which are the biggest news organisations we have… XSS Is Bad Cross-Site Scripting attacks (often abbreviated to XSS) are bad. They use to be nothing more than annoying popups or adverts inserted into target websites. Technology has since moved on and now the same security flaw can lead to colaborative resource management, full data exfiltration, and more. JavaScript using a simple Java extension means hackers are limited by their imagination, nothing less! If a bad guy can inject arbitrary HTML, CSS, and JavaScript into your website they can embed a Java Applet and bypass all sorts of restrictions which would otherwise be in place. A recent example of effective XSS leverage “in the wild” was Anonymous using a JavaScript version of LOIC to sucessfully Ddos government targets. Simply asking supporters to visit unrelated but infected sites conducted the attack. The end-user was still culpable but focus shifted from the initial, very small scale hack. XSS cookie stealers are another popular method of implementing XSS as an attack vector and their use is increasing, due to the popularity of JavaScript. XSS in Scoot.co.uk There are multiple vulnerabilities in dashboard.scoot.co.uk subdomain. Scoot then passes this easily exploited information onto many other website, some of which include the most popular UK news services. This data passes, unvalidated, through sites to which they offer an intergrated business directory. Arbitrary code including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Java is stored in the database without any validation. What is the problem? The implementation is simple and lasting. The attack vector is classed as a “persistent XSS” or “stored XSS” exploit and is found in many input fields of the dashboard.scoot.co.uk subdodomain. The website contains many vulnerabilities but this article focuses on the stored XSS problem. The attack flow is simple: create a free business listing, add a gallery image, insert your malicious code, wait 2-3 minutes and it’s live. An easy way to obfuscate the code is to use the second gallery image as the exploit will be hidden from initial view is present in the page source, being executed as a result. The main culprit is an unvalidated title attribute for the gallery images. The input field allows arbitrary code to be inserted. Below is a proof of concept code: "></a>XSS HERE<a title=" For reporting purposes I used the following: "></a><img src=x onerror=prompt(/XSSPOSED/)> <a title=" The image below shows the entry point. The post How to: not get hacked appeared first on Abeon Tech. ]]> Most people don’t really care about security. We hope and believe our computers take care of security for us. Posting the latest Facebook update pretending to be our cat is far more important. The cat and mouse game could work, if your computer was the cat. It’s not. The best we can do is play catch-up and hope the hackers take more time to develop an exploit than it takes to run an instantaneous, worldwide, fix. Of course, there is no such thing. I’ve played and worked with computers for around 17 years. Probably a lot longer if you count my terrible snake clone for the BBC Micro. My hobby developed into a career as the internet… exploded. I have at least looked at, if not tried to code in, the majority of major languages and systems. From C to Zend, Matlab to MySQL. My esoteric hobby has had several advantages. My obsession with the least interesting parts of computing – the mundane code – has lead to some interesting discoveries. The ability to charge for my hobby being my favourite, learning how to infiltrate most websites on the internet being a close second. I am a devoted white hat developer but not everyone follows the same ethics. My first website was hacked to show nothing but a beheading video… When I was 13. Learning security was an obvious step for me. I was obsessed with how people get hacked. I will not deny that I’ve had some fun but it’s always been that. Virii intended for their original purpose – as a practical joke for friends. I have worked with hundreds of websites to close exploits which could have been used by people with malicious intent. I would rather get a few angrily defensive emails from developers than see terrorists use these same exploits to perpetuate their chosen brand of insanity. Make sure your tinfoil hat is comfortable. This post will digress. I will go off on tangents. This is my rant. Feel free to call me out in the comments. Until then… Am I a target? A common misconception is that “my computer isn’t worth hacking”. This just isn’t true. Some of the many reasons people get hacked can include: resource abuse, data exfiltration, virus spreading, and last but by no means least… because they can. E-peen is fully extended with coders trying to develop a reputation in the hacking scene. The majority of websites and services are exploited simply because they can be. Often with a fitting excuse being created after the fact. If your device is connected to the internet it will, at some point, be the target of an attack. Successful or not. Computers are constantly scanning the internet on the lookout for vulnerabilities. Finding exploitable websites is usually just a case of firing up your chosen scanner with a target domain, I.P. and/or I.P. range. Anyone with even basic knowledge of coding could attack hundreds of thousands of websites, computers and mobile devices using supposed “white hat” tools such as MetaSploit, w3af, sqlmap, and BeEF. Most people don’t, but the few that do can be real dicks. The “internet of things” is close, but worrying. So we’ve built the tension. The end is nigh. Hack all the things is no longer just a meme. What could I do if I wanted to become less of a target? Well, there are a few simple steps anyone can take that can greatly reduce the risk of becoming yet another hacking statistic. Secure all the things! Top 5 lists are for losers. So this is a lenthy top 4 list. Because all hacks fit into 4 categories. Insult me in the comments if you disagree. Avoiding the vast majority of exploits is actually pretty simple but, as it’s a change of habit, can take some prompting. Most of the tips below offer ways to help prevent you getting hacked, which shouldn’t be ignored. Das wär doch mal was… Also am besten immer direkt nachfragen. *g* Naja. Wayne. lg Taurus ]]>

The tenets on which it rests seemed perfectly sound: after meeting a man or woman through work or friends, one gets to know him or her, and if one likes what one sees, one continues to deepen the commitment, which sometimes leads to marriage. What surprises me now is how much this system leaves to chance encounter, to a kind of fate or fortune. For a decidedly unmystical society that seems to have the answer for everything else -- the best medical care, cutting-edge technology, superhighways, and space shuttles -- it seems odd that people are left to their own resources, casting around for another lonely soul, for what is arguably the most important decision of their lives."</span></blockquote><span style="font-family:georgia;"> </span></span><span style=";font-family:times new roman,times,serif;font-size:100%;" > <p><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:times new roman, times, serif;">Just for the record: </span></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family:times new roman, times, serif;"><span><span style="font-family:times new roman, times, serif;">I'm not reading this book and nor do I want to go to India to find myself a husband. Just those few words before your name at the end of a note can change the whole tone of a message.<br /><br />There are some so neutral that I wonder why people bother writing them at all, like "Best", "Cheers" (I hate that one), "Regards".<br /><br />Then there are those that are friendly but still pretty neutral (however better than the above): "Take care", "See you soon", "Till later", "Stay in touch", in Spain "besos" (kisses), or "abrazo"(hug).<br /><br />Then there are the common but warm ones that no matter how unoriginal they are, it's just awesome when you read them at the end of a personal note: "Love", "Much love", "Lots of love", "I miss you", "Fondly", "Thinking of you", "Pxx", "Yours" -- one of my bosses when I wrote for <a href="; used to sign off with "Yours". Coming from a boss (who I'd never met), I first thought it was weird, but then I grew to like it and it opened my relationship with him. In Spain you have ones like "amor" (love) and "con cariño" (with affection). I'm not much of a romantic but I'm a sucker for warm sign offs.<br /><br />Then there are the creative ones -- which no matter what they mean, or are meant to mean -- are just awesome (well, most of them anyway). My brother signs off his emails to me "Lovelove" (I've stolen that from him and use it often too). There was a time in my life where I used to sign off "squillions of thoughts". Yeah...ugh. I think I also used to put a smiley face next to it. Super ugh, eh? (Oh do you know on my old passport my official signature has a smiley face under it? Omg. So embarrassing when I had to sign documents in the bank, or cheques, or anywhere.) Other ones like "missing you like madness"and "craving you" hit the spot but of course, they're very special sign offs.<br /><br />I have a co-worker who signs off "Chaufa". <span class="nfakPe">Chaufa</span> is chinese fried rice in South America, and since it sounds like "Ciao", a pretty novel way to sign off, I like it and use it often too.<br /><br />Lately I've been receiving emails from somebody who always signs off differently and like nothing I've received before. "Baisers" (best kisses in French?), "Inspiration 'n colors", "Tenderness 'n flavors". Yeah...oooooooooooooooo. I'm not thinking much of it but I think creative sign-offs are awesome, the more original, the better.<br /><br />Have any creative sign-offs to share?<br /><br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/08/weight-of-sign-offs.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-8185991595732591851Wed, 27 Aug 2008 12:32:00 +00002008-08-27T05:35:12.329-07:00lifethoughtsAnother "life is short" reminderFrom <a href=";: "Dave Freeman, the co-author of <a href=" <em>Things to Do Before You Die: Travel Events You Just Can't Miss</em></a> unexpectedly died on August 17. Here are some tips that will change your luck on the dance floor:<br /><ul><li>Cut your nails. They HURT when you hold our hands and scratch us while dancing.<br /></li><li>We don't care if you sweat, but it's a big problem if you smell. Use deodorant, carry an extra shirt, and PLEASE chew gum.<br /></li><li>Listen to the music and enjoy it while you dance with us.<br /></li><li>We don't care how many complicated steps you know. Don't experiment dance-Twister with us.</li><li>We are more delicate than you realise. Don't treat us like rusted machinery that needs to be pulled and rammed to function. Be gentle.<br /></li><li>Try to realise when you step on our feet, and acknowledge it -- that makes it OK.<br /></li><li>Do not throw us up in the air. WE HATE THAT.</li><li>No more than 6 spins please. And after those spins, don't let go of us -- we are slightly dizzy and may fall.</li><li>It is fundamental you protect us from being hit and stomped on by other dancers close by. In other words, if there is limited space don't use us to make space.<br /></li><li>The first time you dance with us, keep a wee bit of personal space and don't try to shove your leg between ours. Odds are the second time we dance we will let you do that willfully. However, that does NOT mean we want to go home with you or even talk to you.</li><li>Don't try to feel us up, we are not stupid and we will tell the rest of the girls not to dance with you the creep.<br /></li><li>Don't try to give us a lesson while you dance with us. If we want lessons we go to classes.</li><li>Lastly, look at us when you dance.<br /></li></ul>Happy dancing.<br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/08/from-salsera-to-salsero-with-love.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-6829191016258679193Mon, 11 Aug 2008 10:22:00 +00002008-08-11T03:29:27.283-07:00articlesnewsopinionthoughtsHow will India perform at the 2008 Olympics?<p class="MsoNormal"><span class="konabody"><a href=" Bindra</a> just won <st1:country-region st="on"><st1:place st="on">India</st1:place></st1:country-region> its first individual gold medal at the Olympics, and the first gold in 28 years since the Men's Hockey team won the gold at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Pure, selfish, alone time. It's almost been liberating in a way. Like I'm allowing myself to be in a perpetual daze as I look for my "<a href=";. (Oh how I love that word).<br /><br />I'm a very gregarious person. I love to meet new people, I love to go out, I love to be doing a million social things at a time. But these days I'm just so content being with myself. And that doesn't necessarily mean being alone all the time. I've met more people in the last few weeks than I have in ages, and even transcended into new and special levels of friendship with some. But at all times, I've very much been with myself. It's like I've entered this pensive phase that I'm reveling in, and I know that I have to revel in it to get out of it. Dare I say it's been glorious in many ways.<br /><br />Madrid's calmness in August helps.<br /><br />I'm also realising that midst the beauty of change, how awesome it is to have a few permanent things. They won't always be permanent, but are for the time. I refer to them as permanent because they are very deeply and strongly rooted, hence not easy to change. There's a very warm and safe feeling about those things, and now I'm taking refuge in them by reconnecting and just being.<br /><br />I'm talking a completely different language today, eh? Well it's different to me too, and too darn vague for comfort. But I'm not rattled. <br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/08/alone-time-thoughts.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-4728504717053512889Thu, 07 Aug 2008 18:10:00 +00002008-08-07T11:15:45.706-07:00funnyteaching EnglishTeaching English in Japan :)<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 393px; height: 296px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5231840453174508226" border="0" /></a><br />Ok, ok, I know, we're all going to hell.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"><br /><br /></div>2008/08/teaching-english-in-japan.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-4940165529052791356Thu, 07 Aug 2008 10:19:00 +00002008-08-07T03:24:38.254-07:00coolDubainewsEmirates A380. I was given the privilege (?) to be seated next to him on the way to AND from the city.<br /><br />A madrile<span lang="es"><i>ñ</i></span>o, 32-years old, multicoloured piercing in chin, pop-rock singer/guitarist, filmmaker, novelist, and Osho follower, he was visiting his girlfriend in Valencia. He was decent company, and we had lots to talk about. We talked and talked. After about 8 hours of conversation, of course we exchanged numbers. Turns out he also lived down the road from me. What are the odds!<br /><br />Back in Madrid, he begins calling me. He calls and calls. And calls and calls. And calls and calls until the only way to stop him calling is to answer (<span style="font-style: italic;">super-pesado</span> as you would say in Spanish). The number of calls turned me off; I would answer one in 10 calls, and I never returned the others. Of course, because I was trying to avoid him, I would often bump into him at the post office, or tobacco shop, or local bar, where I would make a million excuses for not answering his million calls. I really didn't care though.<br /><br />A year of dodging his calls and bumping into him, a few months ago I ran into him with his girlfriend at the time, in the metro. We exchanged pleasantries and somehow ended up deciding to start playing tennis together.<br /><br />Getting back into the game has been the best thing I've done in a while. He makes for a great tennis partner; often annoying, but overall tolerable. The tennis works. He often brings friends to watch us play. Weird, but I don't care. They all seem nice and don't interfere. He keeps trying to get me to hang out after tennis, but honestly I have no interest.<br /><br />But his calls don't stop. He still calls and calls. He calls until I pick up. He speaks at a supersonic speed on the phone and I never understand what he says. I get sick of asking him to repeat himself, and after realising that he doesn't really say anything of consequence, I pretend I understand him and leave it at that. His conversations are normally about a movie he watched, tennis, his upcoming mini-vacation, and something about an "agency".<br /><br />Yesterday, slightly bored, when he called I decided to listen. He was on a job on behalf of this "agency" in Alicante, in a luxury villa, in a jacuzzi, with 3 girls. I was all ears.<br /><br />Me: "Who are these girls?"<br />Him: "Ah, some girls from the agency."<br />Me: "Urrr...ok."<br />Him: Yeah, I have to look after them and entertain them. They are really nice girls, so it's fun.<br />Me: "Right."<br />Him: "Why don't you come here for the weekend? It's a great place, lots of room. I have lots of time to chill, so yeah, come hang out."<br />Me: "Urrr...thanks for the invite. I will let you know if I fancy it. But didn't you say you are working?"<br />Him: "Well, yeah, but it's not really work you know. It's easy. And it pays well. It's helping me pay off my debts."<br />Me: "Cool. Well I hope the girls are hot atleast."<br />Him: "Yeah, they're young and pretty. In fact, you should consider being part of this agency."<br />Me: "Right."<br />Me: "I gotta go. Call me for tennis when you get back."<br />Him: "Cool. Have a great week."<br /><br />I hang up with him and try to understand what he's just told me. And then it registers, but with doubts, of course.<br />Is he a male prostitute?<br />Is he a pimp?<br />Is he looking after female prostitutes, or "luxury escorts", while they're on a job?<br /><br />He is a nice person. He isn't good-looking, or well-built, and is often on sedatives. He is a bit weird and moody at times but not threatening, or unpleasant. I am no one to judge him. If it works for him, good for him. I'm just happy I have a tennis buddy.<br /><br /><script src="; type="text/javascript"></script>2008/08/gigolo.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Abha Malpani)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17628994.post-6146010486848317437Wed, 06 Aug 2008 10:41:00 +00002008-08-06T03:51:30.033-07:00ProcrastinationprogramsMy Wordle<a href="; title="Wordle: Abha's Wordle"><img src="; style="border: 1px solid rgb(221, 221, 221); padding: 4px; width: 172px; height: 133px;" /></a><br /><br />This is my <a href=";. Abhinav Bhatt Mostly Powered by A.I. (Abhinav's Intelligence) Wed, 09 Sep 2026 17:16:19 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Abhinav Bhatt 32 32 140636235 So I recently returned from: The Odyssey /blog/so-i-recently-returned-from-the-odyssey/ Wed, 09 Sep 2026 09:24:23 +0000 /?p=5443 Broke Nolan’s Law by watching it in a Non-IMAX theater. Hoped that I wouldn’t lose my way back home after watching the next movie in theatres. Also, this completes my one year since returning to Jaipur after a 15 year long stay in Bengaluru. This post is a mishmash of the movie watching and the emotion of completing the Odyssey. The Odyssey This might be one of the handful of movies, that I have seen in a theatre all alone. I mean, not that the theatre was empty, just me going alone all by myself. But it was surely not more than 25% occupied. This gave me a focused and dedicated viewing experience. As Nolan intended. My main takeaway from the movie was how relatable the story felt to Indians because our epics share so much with Homer’s work. We can go into a rabbit hole of things which are almost identical like the bow scene in the movie with Ramayan. How many characters look and talk the same between 2 cultures! We may be very different now but probably the stories just traveled from one place and just took a small deviation on the way and eventually turned out to be in a different language and creating different cultures. Few things got lost in translation and some stayed the same. (Obviously, the origin must be Indian because I am writing this from India. Jai Hind.) Now, when it comes to technicalities, I couldn’t watch it in IMAX because of its unavailability in Jaipur. But there are 2 IMAX theaters opening very soon, which is exciting. With what I had, one must appreciate Nolan for trying to stay as analog as possible. I am not a fanboy but I do understand the effort one has to make extra to make such a movie of such a massive scale. When everything around us is becoming more and more fake, Cinema which is techically all fake, made in a realistic manner, is a big deal I guess. I recommend this movie to everyone who wants to enjoy and relive a historical, mythological, and still cinematic take on a cultural defining epic. Don’t go with any emotional takeaway. Like how in Oppenheimer, one had to revise Nuclear Fusion and Fission beforehand, this was relatively straightforward to understand. Of course, I did my homework by remembering a few names. Like how Nolan intended. Taking a detour, like how Odysseus had to stay decades away from home, this month marks 1 year of my return back home after spending a decade and a half in Bengaluru. It has been literally a 2nd Home as well which I miss from time to time. Dose here doesn’t feel the same, no matter how Benne you may make it. But mentally, I feel now it is the time and totally fine to not invoke Bengaluru every now and then while talking to people. Jaipur is where I am and hoping to be for time being. Back in 2010, when I moved there, I had thought that I would return back after 5 years. Most of my mates did move back or moved abroad. Along with a few, I remained in Bengaluru. It slowly grew on me and I got used to the weather and the traffic, the only thing people bring up when they talk about the city. Though, like how Odysseus got sort of trapped with Calypso for years and didn’t know whether this was a confinement or deliberate attempt to stay, for me post Covid, it has been a similar experience. When you continue to work from home and don’t socialize much, there is barely any difference as to where you live. Life shouldn’t have to be that way, but that’s convenient and we seek convenience and compromise over certain things. Having said that, one should never say never to anything life hands over to you. If Odysseus hadn’t got the Odyssey, it would have been a boring tale. Wouldn’t it? Maybe that is the point of every long journey. Not just to reach home, but to look back at the detours, the years that stretched longer than planned, and feel grateful that they happened at all. P.S.: When I get a chance to visit Bengaluru again, I wish this gets completed. This time surely a revolution would stir up and bring drastic differences to our lives. This time we will get what we want!’. And only to realize that nothing really changes. It is not being cynical and nihilistic. Alright, maybe it is. But things never change here. Even if one applies 500% tariffs, life finds a way and people re-route their exports (and even their people). As someone had said, we in India live both in 2050 as well as 1850 exactly at the same time. And this is the worst thing and the best thing about us. The complexity of systems and their inability to change quickly is carved in stones here. Why it feels like things would change? Every few years there is an itch in some section of the society. And every few years the youth awakens, stretches, yawns, and scratches the itch, before snoozing and sleeping again. All thanks to the inactions, and actions of the Government or some miscreants. Roads get made, and they get dug up the very next day. Bridges get made and collapse after the first rain. Let’s not go into potholes, figuratively as well as literally. To get anything done honestly, one gets drained so much that we tend to go towards the closest shortcuts #IYKYK. But one day, the blood boils up to the brim and it spills. That day, we all realize that enough is enough and people up top have to go. We decide to act and take matters into our own soft snowflake hands. We dress up with #grwm, pump our fists, make angry faces, take out our weapons of choices (phones and keyboards) and post angrily online. Boom. Job done! Then it appears that yes few things have changed but only on a surface level. But nothing really changes. After enough provocations, and some folks, with no responsibilities (job and family wise) and enough motivation to join/create a political party and make a career out of it, come on the roads and take out protests. If the protests really fit our confirmation bias, we support them. We collectively mobilize, raise slogans, and rally behind them. Because we need some leaders to get moving. It is easy to follow someone. Why think originally when we can outsource it? Why make effort ourselves because we have designated some leaders to fight for our cause? The most we could do is make some reels, post a few stories, crack some pun-laden tweets on X, and feel pride as if we hit our protein goal for a day. It feels like finally things would finally change. Why nothing would change actually? Expecting things, institutions, and systems to change in this country is like expecting to reach the end of the feed of your infinite scroll. They cannot change by any revolution. In fact, having a revolution itself is not possible due to the heterogenity in our homogenity. You have to do something really drastic to make the tides turn. Like indulging in some meaningful protest and sprinkle a bit of violence on the side. That might work in some cases. Normally, things change here only one way. Organically. Virally only jokes spread or diseases. If one expects that papers shouldn’t leak before exams, it means that the price of the leaked paper should be so high that nobody, and not just them, is able to afford and the paper leakers starve and shut down their shop. Otherwise if by chance it is available, anyone who can afford it would happily get a copy. Have you ever cheated in an exam? No? Ok. You try to bring real change and then a lollipop of freebies are shown to you which makes your attention diffused like a water cannon diffuses a mob. For the education system to change, it needs absolute change of the whole mindset of the community. This is not possible in at least my lifetime. We believe english speaking is equivalent to education and a degree means a shortcut to success. Try engaging on this with sense with anyone, and you will be cursing yourself to even try. The people up top are the same people down below. Have you ever tried changing yourself? Please. What to do then? The only and literally the only way out is to outgrow your surroundings and peers in terms of skills, education, and finances (and of course luck). No excuses, just sheer efforts, persistence and chance. Till you don’t have the combination of these things, keep sharing angry social media posts. Best wishes. P.S.: This post is short but might be intentionally longform for millennials and it would be too much to read, and for Gen Zs impossible to hold attention for this much time. Moreover, these terms and classifications of generations is as helpless as a cockroach lying upside down. ]]> 5430 So I recently did few things aliens related /blog/so-i-recently-did-few-things-aliens-related/ Fri, 17 Jul 2026 11:44:46 +0000
