Like last year, we can’t believe its time to share another letter with some updates for our family. 2014 was another busy year with lots of changes for our family that we look forward to sharing.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="285" width="400" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="360" width="640" />

Joseph is continuing his career path with the Army passing the 2-year anniversary mark on Sept 24. He made it through his first winter in Alaska for his duty station at Fort Wainwright. He made a trip back to Alabama in late May for the wedding of two former HS Classmates. Our “bucket list” trip to Alaska did not materialize due to some changes in Joseph’s schedule with field exercises this summer. Joseph made a second trip to Alabama in November for a short visit. During that visit, we were able to meet his wife, Yvonne. We welcome her to our family with every ounce of love in our hearts and wish them a lifetime of happiness. Yvonne is currently attending the University of Fairbanks as a Biology major. She plans to continue her studies in the medical field after graduation.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="400" width="300" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="400" width="285" />

Judy enjoyed some antique furniture refinishing projects from auction and antique store finds. She “tried” a short stint in a corporate accounting environment with a local hospital but quickly got that out of her system when overtime became the norm. Thankfully, she was able to return to the small accounting firm she has been with since 2007. Her role at Leigh King & Associates has changed to include assisting with audits.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="400" width="266" />

2014 had some major changes for Charlie as well. After 8 years of serving the Hawk Pride Church of Christ, Charlie resigned as their Minister. Then a new door opened for Ministry in May. Under the leadership of the Sherrod Avenue Church of Christ, he now serves as the minister at a long-term care and rehab center each Sunday morning. In late July, Charlie transitioned from part-time employment to full-time with the Northwest AL RC&D Council as their Executive Director. Over abundant rain, overfull work schedules and back issues made part-time farming an even greater challenge so we reduced our sheep numbers to hopefully simplify things this winter. We are truly honored that demand for our lambs has never been stronger so the less supply and strong demand has been a good problem. Charlie is ending the year with some health struggles and we are girding up to face them with determination and faith.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="266" width="400" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="400" width="266" />

Charlie and Judy enjoyed a short fall vacation to Burkes Garden, VA and viewed some historic farmland owned by the Charles Marvin Meek estate. Not sure of any kinship but it was an honor to find another Meek family tied to the land and agriculture. Judy checked off a bucket list item hiking a minute portion of the Appalachian Trail near Groseclose, VA. Charlie tagged along as best he could! We made a swing home via Asheville, NC to visit the Biltmore House. Biltmore was quite the opposite of the first leg of our trip but it was good to learn the history of the Vanderbilt family and see the farm still involved in active crop and livestock production.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="266" width="400" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="400" width="285" />

We pray this letter finds you and your family in good health and best wishes for 2015. May God Bless each and everyone!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="285" width="400" />

Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year,

Charlie &Judy Meek

2014/12/merry-christmas-2014.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Judy @ A Meek Perspective)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4740083196210636805.post-581541908159413138Wed, 25 Dec 2013 20:02:00 +00002013-12-25T14:15:56.681-06:00FamilyMerry Christmas 2013
Greetings to our dear friends and family,

2013 is just about over. to be harder each year and 2013 just had too many moving parts to allow time for blogging. Our gardening efforts were a challenge with a VERY wet spring, lots of travel and Charlie battling a back injury. Our berries did yield much fruit and great peace of mind to enjoy fresh food right out of the garden. Late July we visited with Judy’s High School classmates in Keyser, WV for from NC to come shear our sheep and the bulk of his clients in North AL, and TN. His former apprentice was able to shear for a few clients as well. Farm life continues to bring great joy yet also struggles…not the best combination but such is life. Charlie still enjoys his part-time employment with the Northwest AL RC&D Council as their Executive Director. The Council was honored to receive the Outstanding Project Award for AL and the Southeast Region. 2013 continued his 8th year of service as the minister of the Hawk Pride church of Christ in Colbert County. During our trip to WV he was able to visit the VA Tech University farm and view their Polled Dorset Sheep. Charlie was able to add some breeding stock to our farm from VA Tech that we hope will help us increase efficiency and quality. As we go to print with this newsletter Charlie is still struggling with back issues and awaiting test results with hopes we can find out 03:38:00 +00002012-12-23T21:38:04.159-06:00Merry Christmas 2012I know I have been missing from the blog world for quite a while. I hope to be back soon, but I didn't want to miss wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. This is what we have been up to this year:

Greetings to our dear friends and family,

2012 was another busy year with BIG changes again for our family.

Joseph began the year starting his second semester at Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. After a summer of reflection, he decided to re-focus his career plans and enlist with the US Army. He completed his basic training at Fort Jackson, SC on Dec 6th. We were thankful to have his girl friend of a year, Rachel, with us for his graduation. He is now at his individual training assignment at Fort Gordon, GA studying to be a radio operator/maintainer. He did very well during basic training and qualified as an expert marksman. We are proud of Joseph’s decision to serve our country and we pray for his safety. Needless to say our outlook on life, being thankful and praying for Joseph have all reached new levels. We look forward to spending some time with him during the Holidays.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="; width="426" />

Judy continues and enjoys her association with Leigh, King & Associates as a staff accountant. She is currently studying for the IRS Enrolled Agent Exam and has passed the first test for her certification – two more to go! She enjoys antiques shopping and photography as her key hobbies. Finding time to blog has been a challenge this year but you can still learn of some of our happenings and events at . We grew a larger garden this year and we enjoyed the fresh food right out of the garden and were able to freeze some for the winter months. Judy was able to travel with Charlie to the National RC&D Meeting held in Madison, WI in June. We were able to squeeze in a quick visit to the historic “shack” mentioned in the classic book, The Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. We also enjoyed a visit to the Leopold Center, which highlights renewable energy and “green” technology. We also visited Southeast MN to get another state on Judy’s list visiting the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN. The bluffs along the upper Mississippi River are captivating. Other stops for our trip included the Decorah, IA Eagle Cam and a sheep farm in Iowa for Charlie to feed his sheep farming addition during our travels. Late fall we visited the North American Livestock Expo in Louisville, KY with two dear friends. Judy is rapidly adjusting to the role of an Army mom.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="434" src="; width="640" />

August 31 was Charlie’s one-year anniversary being “officially” retired from USDA-SCS/NRCS. Charlie is as busy as ever, but most days don’t feel anything like retirement. Charlie is continuing his part-time employment with the Northwest AL RC&D Council as their Executive Director. 2012 continued his 7th year of service as the minister of the Hawk Pride church of Christ in Colbert County. The shearing side-business continued in 2012 (6th year) assisting clients in TN, AL and MS (sheep, llamas and alpacas). New for 2012 was planning and hosting a Farm Day for a group of home schooled students and their families. Staff from the Florence USDA-NRCS office assisted and several special friends attended as well, we had a total attendance of 50 special guests. Charlie enjoyed shearing for the group to share our love of raising sheep.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="; width="640" />

Our small farm continues to not only feed us but also of equal importance give us wholesome experiences such as a glorious sunrise or majestic sunsets. Seeing seeds pop out of the ground and chart their course to harvest and making trips to the barn during the wee hours of the morning and seeing steam rising from a new lamb and hearing its first bleat of “hello world” sure make the world seem right! We continue to be thankful for our jobs, great coworkers, great neighbors and two church families that love and support us more than one could dream. We cherish communication with our family and friends and seeing them when our paths cross which is NOT enough!

We pray this letter finds you and your family in good health and best wishes for 2013. May God Bless each and everyone!

Happy New Year,

Charlie, Judy and Joseph Meek

2012/12/merry-christmas-2012.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Judy @ A Meek Perspective)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4740083196210636805.post-1600198970847738161Sat, 18 Aug 2012 13:06:00 +00002012-08-18T08:06:37.359-05:00Road TripRoad Trip: Illinois Countryside Interstate 39The first of June we left on a road trip traveling toward Wisconsin for a business/vacation trip. We chose to drive this trip to be able to see the countryside all the way from Alabama to Wisconsin (a 2500 miles round trip journey). We also visited Minnesota and Iowa. These photos were taken around Rockford, Illinois. We drove off the interstate to be able to get some closer shots.

Our first day we traveled through Illinois and enjoyed viewing the farm scenery...corn, corn, corn and corn was growing in this area. When we looked at the farms passing by our car windows, every farm had one of these barns on their property. They were dotted all over the landscape. We wondered why every farm had this particular barn. Most were exactly alike. Some were painted, some were not. Some red, some white, some green, some naturally gray.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="408" src="; width="640" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="; width="640" />

We also noticed that there were no fences. In the southern states, every farm has fences not only to keep their livestock in, but also as boundary lines. We didn't see much livestock in this area of Illinois. I guess there was no longer any need for fencing.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="; width="640" />

We stopped and worshipped on Sunday with a friendly congregation in Ottawa, Illinois. One of the men was a farmer so we asked him why every farm had one of these barns. He said they were old-fashioned corn cribs. We soon got off the interstate after church and drove closer to one of these barns. After a closer look, you could definitely see the gaps in the sides of the barns for the corn to dry out.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="; width="640" />

The barn below was painted white and had a slightly different design for the roof and cupola. All of the barns had the cupola on top -- I assume for added ventilation.

Those lucky enough to have had that type of experience can easily understand why I would do what ever I could to provide that same blessing to my own children.

The last ten years have been among the most formative years of my life. When I came here I was only 25 years old. So much has happened to me since.

I am grateful for all of the experiences that I had here, and all of the friends who made those experiences possible.

I am proud of the many accomplishments that I have been privileged to achieve, especially building an eruv and developing, writing, and hosting the first ever Shabbos Morning Talk Show. I don't know if I could have done those and other things anywhere else.

I want to thank all the people who gave us so much love and support over the years. We will never forget you. We hope to remain in touch and have opportunities to share happy occasions together in the future.

I hope everyone knows how much I truly love this community, and how proud and honored I was to serve as Rabbi here.

Soon Nebraska will have a new Chief Rabbi.

This past week<a href="; over 200 new Rabbis received their semichah form Yeshiva University. Perhaps one of those fine young men will be the next chief Rabbi of the state of Nebraska. Beth Israel is a great shul and Omaha is a great community. I have no doubt that the best Rabbis will compete for this position, and whoever my successor will be, he will build on everything that we accomplished over the last ten years and take this shul and this community to new and higher levels than I could even imagine. I ask that everyone do all that they can to support the next Rabbi so that he can be successful.

While I am sad to leave, I am excited to start my new position at Beth Tfiloh. We are grateful to Hashem for being good to our family and for giving me the privilege to teach Torah and serve the Jewish people for a living.

I can never thank Omaha enough for the wonderful experience of the last ten years. I hope to visit many times in the future for happy occasions and to witness the Beth Israel's continued growth and success.

Thanks for everything. May Hashem bless us all.
2014/03/farewell.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7442829836608821412.post-1656907264056002435Mon, 17 Feb 2014 17:33:00 +00002014-02-18T01:27:29.201-06:00E18 Sephardic Shabbatepisode 18 sephardic ShabbatGSN S1 E18 -Sephardic Shabbat!
This week is Sephardic Shabbat on Good shabbos Nebraska -America's favorite shabbos morning Talk show - featuring the world famous Sephardi Chazzan Rabbi Moshe Tessone.

Rabbi Moshe Tessone is Director of The Sephardic Community Program at Yeshiva University and a distinguished faculty member at Yeshiva University where he teaches Jewish Studies. NCSY Shabbat with Israel LashakThis week was one of the most important and serious episodes of Good Shabbos Nebraska - America's favorite Shabbos morning talk show!

Our guest was Rabbi Israel Lashak from the NCSY youth organization of the Orthodox Union.

Rabbi Lashak has been in the informal Jewish education business for almost three decades. He is based in Dallas but he lives in a plane. He has racked up almost 7 million miles on American Airlines traveling to Jewish communities all over the world, inspiring kids and consulting communities on how they can grow their youth programs.

Rabbi Lashak is originally from Mexico city. He speaks 7 languages fluently and has traveled to all but 26 of the world's 230 countries for Jewish programming.

Rabbi Lashak is a true professional. Speaking to him for 10 minutes, anyone could tell that he knows the business of educating Jewish youth.

On the show he told us about the two Torahs. The Torah of Moshe is the Torah that most of us are familiar with - Jewish texts like the Torah, Talmud, midrash, etc. Many kids connect with the Torah of Moshe, but many do not. The kids who do not immediately connect with Jewish texts tend to get left behind Jewishly.

That is where Rabbi Lashak comes in. He introduces the kids to the Torah of Abraham. Abraham did not come to the Torah by reading a book. Abraham discovered God through nature, experience, and acts of kindness. That is the Torah that Rabbi Lashak specializes in.

Rabbi Lashak organizes trips all over the world so that Jewish kids can see the beauty of Hashem's creations and engage in acts of kindness. He does service learning projects in south America, historical journey's through Europe, and of course trips to Israel. Rabbi Lashak has lead almost 70 birthright trips to Israel.

Rabbi Lashak is a serious scholar in the Torah of Moshe. he spent over 15 years learning Torah in Yeshiva and to this day he continues to learn seriously every day. It is because of his foundation in the Torah of Moshe that he is able to make the Torah of Abraham come alive. The kids experience the wonders of the world and connect with Hashem on a deep level - and then Rabbi Lashak introduces them to serious Jewish content that enhances the experience and inspires the kids to follow up after the trip and engage in their unique Jewish heritage.

We got to experience Rabbi Lashak first hand over Shabbat. Friday Night we had a dinner for NCSY families and Rabbi Lashak showed us how to make a Friday night dinner into an inspiring experience with singing and words of Torah.

Over Shabbos we had serious conversations about the sate of Jewish youth in Omaha. We discussed it openly on Good Shabbos Nebraska and Rabbi Lashak gave us some candid and honest feedback on what he had observed. Some of what he had to say was painful to hear, but he also gave us some constructive advice.

He made some really great connections with myself and other Jewish professionals over Shabbos and we plan to follow up with him and see if we can use his advice to turn around our community.

Many thanks to NCSY for making this Shabbos possible and of course to Yaakov Rosenblatt of Dallas who sponsored Rabbi Lashak. 2014/02/gsn-s1-e17-ncsy-shabbat-with-israel.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)20tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7442829836608821412.post-899598037429421859Tue, 11 Feb 2014 03:02:00 +00002014-02-10T21:02:40.690-06:00Rabbi Pesach Lerner to Speak about Women of the WallTonight was incredible! Rabbi Pesach Lerner is in Omaha on business and he ravened maariv at Beth Israel tonight.

I had asked him in advance if he would speak about the Jonathan Pollard case.

It was incredible. He spoke about the facts of the Jonathan Pollard case.

Rabbi Lerner is very clear, Jonathan Pollard committed a crime. The point that Rabbi Lerner makes, and is finally joined by many prominent Jewish leaders and American politicians, is that Pollard paid his debt to society and it is now time to let him go.

Rabbi Lerner has been advocating for Pollard for 20 years and he has spoken hundreds, if not thousands of times on this topic. His presentation is fascinating and Rabbi Lerner's passion for the cause is infectious. He recommended that for more information we go to <a href=" />
Rabbi Lerner is going to be back at Beth Israel tomorrow night at 6:15 pm. I asked him if he would talk tomorrow about the women of the wall situation in Israel. He is somewhat involved with a group called <a href=" for the wall that was established to get out an opposing view point to women of the wall.

Rabbi Lerner has a very interesting perspective to contribute to the issue.

The Reform Synagogue recently had Anat Hoffman of Women of the Wall scheduled to be here. She was snowed out, but I was hoping to have an opportunity to hear her in person as I always go to hear challenging speakers, especially speakers who are public personalities.

Tomorrow is an opportunity for Omaha Jews to have their ideas challenged. I really hope that the word gets out in Omaha about this rare opportunity for us to hear words that we may not agree with from a public personality. That is what Torah is all about.

So be there tomorrow Tuesday, February 11 at 6:15pm!
You will not want to miss it!!!

2014/02/rabbi-pesach-lerner-to-speak-about.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7442829836608821412.post-6528374712890796070Sun, 09 Feb 2014 16:37:00 +00002014-02-09T13:24:55.267-06:00Monday night at beth Israel - The Facts about Jonathan Pollard! This Monday we have a special guest at Beth Israel. Rabbi Pesach Lerner is passing through Omaha and will be davening with us on Monday night at 6:15 PM.

Rabbi Lerner is known for many things, among them he has never stopped advocating on behalf of Jonathan Pollard.

Jonathan Pollard is an historic figure who personifies a host of issues that confront American Jews.

Is there institutionalized antisemitism in America? Are Jews more loyal to Israel than Amerca? If the interests of Israel and America ever came into conflict, which side would we choose?

It also brings up the question of how Israel views the American Jewish community. Does Israel have a responsibility towards all Jews or just towards Israelis? If Pollard had been Israeli would Israel have done more to try to free him?

In the past Jewish organizations were reluctant to advocate on behalf of Pollard as many Jews saw it as a sign of disloyalty to America.

Rabbi Lerner never stopped advocating for Pollard for a minute.

Over the last couple of years, as Pollard's health has been in decline and as the Israeli government has taken a more active role in advocating for his release, it has become in vogue for mainstream Jewish organizations to speak out on his behalf.

This is a great opportunity for Omaha Jews to learn about this historic case and to ask questions from the man who has been directly involved all along.

So be here at Beth Israel on
February 10th Monday night at 6:15 PM For Rabbi Pesach Lerner. Everyone is invited!2014/02/monday-night-at-beth-israel-facts-about.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7442829836608821412.post-7842476937814166896Fri, 07 Feb 2014 22:17:00 +00002014-02-17T11:41:43.974-06:00E16 Good Shabbos Iowaepisode 16Episode 16 of GSN - It was the first ever <a href=" Shabbos Nebraska Bat Mitzvah!

Yesterday Eleanor Dunning became a Bat Mitzvah. The two of us have been studying parshat Mishpatim together for almost a year. We met once a week in the Kripke Library at the JCC and studied the parshah with commentary.

The culmination was a special episode of <a href=" Shabbos Nebraska with Eleanor as the SPECIAL GUEST HOST!

She was truly amazing.

She began the show with her opening monologue that we wrote together. She gave a short summary of parshat Mishpatim, which is basically a list of 53 seemingly unrelated mitzvot. She asked the global question, "is there a method to this mitzvah madness?" Eleanor and I found an answer we like in the <a href=" of the Abravanel. She gave a brief bio of the Abravanel and then explained his answer. Last week was the ten commandments. The Abravanel explains that the mitzvot of mishpatim are Moshe's commentary to how to observe the ten commandments in detail.

After the monologue she did a segment about the ten commandments. When we studied together we developed a mnemonic to remember the ten commandments. With the help of her little brother, her cousin, and her father they taught the mnemonic so that every one of the hundreds of people there yesterday will easily be able to recite the Big Ten in order forever.

Eleanor has a very close special family friend Wendy, who came in from New York. Wendy has <a href=" Syndrome - a genetic illness that causes loss of sight and hearing. Eleanor interviewed her for the show. Wendy is an impressive lady. She is a divorce attorney in New York city, and one of the most inspiring people I have ever met. She spoke about some of the challenges that she faces being blind and deaf. Eleanor taught us a Rashi form this week's parshah that relates to the extra sensitivity that we are supposed to have towards deaf people.

Wendy explained that she has a cochlear implant that allows her to hear. It changed her life. She was scared to get it at first, but Dr. Edward Cohn, a leading scientist at BoysTown Research hospital in Omaha, convinced her to go through with it. Eleanor surprised Wendy by inviting Dr. Cohn to join them on the show.

Wendy got to thank Dr. Cohn for changing her life and he told us a bit about the remarkable advances that they are making at BoysTown and at UNMC to reverse sight and hearing loss caused by Usher's syndrome.

As we always do on Good Shabbos Nebraska, Eleanor invited the guests to learn some Torah with her. She chose to focus on a mitzvah from this week's parshah that was particularly meaningful to her. One of the mitzvot in Mishpatim is the commandment to prevent animals from suffering. Eleanor loves animals, but she also saw on a tour of a research lab that animals are experimented on. She and Dr. Cohn had a fascinating discussion on the show about the tension between kindness to animals and the use of animals for research.

For a few months leading up to her bat mitzvah Eleanor and I had learned some Torah perspectives on the ethics of animal research and we compared them with the works of Peter Singer who is opposed to many types of animal experimentation that are used in research of diseases like Usher Syndrome.

Eleanor briefly explained the Torah positions on our relationship to animals and how it differs from Dr. Singer's.

Dr. Cohn said that he subscribes to the Torah's view, and we owe many of the most important developments in science to animal research.

In addition to the Torah segments, Eleanor also introduced musical guests <a href=" Pella - the greatest Jewish a cappella group in the world. They performed two songs, including a special song that they wrote just for Eleanor.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="320" width="319" />

It may have been the best bat mitzvah in the history of the world! The show was all about Torah. Not only did Eleanor learn, everyone who came walked away from that bat mitzvah knowing more Torah then they did before.

At lunch after davening Eleanor's father came over to me and gave me the biggest compliment a Rabbi can receive. He said, "Thank you Rabbi. Our whole family learned from this bat mitzvah. But most of all, Eleanor sees that Judaism is not something outside of her life. She knows that the Torah can be applied to everything that she does. That is exactly what we wanted her to take with her. Thank you."

Good Shabbos Nebraska has created a cultural change in Omaha. TO many Omaha Jews, it has brought Shabbos into their lives. GSN makes Torah relevant and exciting and makes people love learning.

But if it did nothing else, the format that it gives kids for their bar and bat mitzvahs would have made the whole program worth it.

So be a part of the Shabbos morning program that is taking Omaha by storm! Catch Good Shabbos Nebraska every Shabbos at 10 am ONLY at Beth Israel Synagogue - Where Every Shabbos is a Shabbaton!

2014/01/the-first-ever-good-shabbos-nebraska.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7442829836608821412.post-4859025105684156452Mon, 20 Jan 2014 04:09:00 +00002014-01-21T09:42:18.625-06:00dorothy kripkekripkemeyer kripkemyer kripkesaul kripkewarren buffettHappy Birthday Rabbi Kripke!Last night my wife and I had the honor of being at a celebration for Rabbi Myer S. Kripke's 100th birthday.

Over the last 10 years it has been one of the most distinct privileges to have a relationship with this sage of Israel. Although I joke and call myself the chief Rabbi of the State of Nebraska, the truth is that Rabbi Kripke is the man who really deserves that title.

Rabbi Kripke is famous for a number of reasons.

He is the father of the world famous philosopher<a href="; Saul Kripke. According to many, Saul Kripke is among the most important philosophers of the last 100 years.

Also, Rabbi Kripke's late wife, Dorothy Kripke, was the author of the children's book <a href=" Talk About God. Dorothy Kripke's book has been translated into over a dozen languages and is still considered a classic book and one of the best books to begin a conversation with children on this very important subject.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />
In his own right, Rabbi Kripke was a pulpit Rabbi at Beth El Synagogue here in Omaha for 30 years. He was ordained in 1937 at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York and is probable one of the last living students of<a href="; Mordechai Kaplan when he was there. Rabbi Kripke was a scholar who has authored (and continues to author) countless articles on Torah and a book called <a href=" and Interpretations.

What most people know about Rabbi Kripke is that he was the Rabbi who had a relationship with Warren Buffett in the 60s. Rabbi Kripke invested everything he had with Warren Buffett and became a millionaire many times over. <a href=" New York Times did a write up on Rabbi Kripke a number of years ago.

Purchasing a share of Berkshire Hathaway is like purchasing a diamond. The shares pay no dividend so as they rise in value the owner does not earn any money unless the shares are sold.

Over the years, as his net worth soared, Rabbi Kripke never boasted about his wise investment. In fact, I wonder if he told anyone other than his wife.

After 30 years as the Rabbi of Beth El he retired and continued to live with his wife in Omaha. His life style never changed.

In the mid 90s Rabbi Kripke made his first multi million dollar charitable donation. It was to the Jewish Theological seminary, where he earned his rabbinic ordination and met his wife. When he and his wife got married they did not have much money between them. The seminary hosted their wedding in the courtyard and Rabbi Kripke had said that the gift was to repay them for their kindness.

Since then Rabbi Kripke has given away millions of dollars to dozens of institutions.

After his beloved wife Dorothy passed away he moved into the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home here in Omaha where he lives until this day.

The Talmud teaches that when a person passes through a new place it is proper to seek out and visit the Torah scholars and the righteous people who reside in that town. Whenever I have guests come to visit Omaha, the very first place I take them is to meet Rabbi Kripke. He qualifies as both.

Like Avraham's wife Sarah, Rabbi Kripke is 127 years old when it comes to learning. He is 100 in his vast breadth of knowledge from a century of experience and ceaseless study. He is like a young 20 year old Yeshiva student with regard to his keen and acute analytical mind, and he is like a boy of seven years old in his excitement and enthusiasm to learn new things.

But Rabbi Kripke is more than an exceptional scholar. Rabbi Kripke is a true Zaddik.

In life we are all tested. In Hebrew these kinds of life tests are called nisyonot. Among whatever other tests God put before Rabbi Kripke, one of them was the nisayon of wealth.

Everyone wants money, but those who have achieved great wealth have learned that it comes with a heavy burden. And while we all laugh and say, "that is a burden that I would love to have!" - there are certainly worse things to be burdened with - wealth is a burden none the less.

Money, like any great blessing, has the potential to change people.

I think that all who know Rabbi Kripke would attest to the fact that Rabbi Kripke confronted and conquered the nisayon of wealth. He acted as if he was simply the custodian of money given to him by God with the express purpose of helping others.

A meeting with Rabbi Kripke is a lesson in true humility. He is a paragon of this most important character trait and his example is one that we can only hope to emulate.

I feel so fortunate that I have the privilege of knowing Rabbi kripke and living near him. I have the privilege to learn from his wisdom, my children have received blessings from him, and he was the <a href=" shel Eliyahu at my son's bris.

Happy Birthday Rabbi Kripke. May Hashem continue to grant you health and happiness. May your family continue to join together for happy occasions. And may our Omaha Jewish community and the entire Jewish people be blessed to have you as our Rabbi for many years to come!.2014/01/happy-birthday-rabbi-kripke.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)162tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7442829836608821412.post-7560925996273712668Mon, 06 Jan 2014 19:30:00 +00002014-01-16T10:56:46.486-06:00Good Shabbos NebraskaIs Good Shabbos Nebraska Kosher? This past Shabbos on <a href=" Shabbos Nebraska - America's favorite Shabbos morning talk show, we had the <a href=" musician Lenny Solomon. It was a fantastic Shabbos and a great way to take us into the mid winter Hiatus.

For the next two weeks Good Shabbos Nebraska is going to be on break. We are taking down the stage and davening will just feature a short parshah monologue (I don't think I can ever go back to calling it a sermon).

We will return on January 25th with guest host Elinor Dunning - This raises so many questions: (1) What do the regular members think? (2) Is it working to boost the shul's popularity? (3) Finally, and perhaps most importantly, does turning shul into a makeshift TV studio (albeit a Shomer Shabbat one) cheapen the notion of mikdash me'at, and turn what should be a sacred space into yet another symbol of our popular culture? What say you Rabbi <a aria-haspopup="true" aria-owns="js_7" data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/user.php?id=578509180&extragetparams=%7B%22directed_target_id%22%3A0%7D" href="; id="js_8" style="cursor: pointer; text-decoration: none;">Jon Gross?
Lenny Solomon kindly responded with the following

HI Reuven - Just think Avraham Avinu. You are in Israel where people are on board with Judaism or not. Here in Omaha you need to be creative - out of the box. It frankly was the most exciting program I have ever seen. The sermon was given as a monologue a ala Johnny Carson. The Kids were involved. Torah is alive and well in Omaha. Kudos to Rabbi Gross!
Thanks Lenny!

To answer Rabbi Spolter's questions directly - Thank God, my membership is overall very supportive. It takes a lot of guts to support a Rabbi in doing something out of the box. Good Shabbos Nebraska would not exist if it were not for the support of the Beth Israel congregation, and I grateful for their support.

After 13 straight episodes I think everyone would agree that it has been a success. Regular attendance is up. Our regulars are coming more regularly, and we have seen lots of people who have never come in the past.

20 and 30 years ago most Jews had a bubby and zeidi that were religious. Davening did not speak to the unaffiliated Jew, but the traditional synagogue still had a nostalgia that spoke to them.

Today, American Jews are 4th and 5th generation assimilated. Their grandparents were already estranged from the synagogue. The traditional format is alienating and intimidating to them. Over the years I have stretched the bounds of my own creativity to make davening more meaningful, but there is only so much that can be done with the traditional format.

And I am not the only Rabbi who struggled with this. This is a national problem.

Good Shabbos Nebraska maintains the traditional service and does not compromise davening at all. It simply substitutes the sermon with something that speaks to everyone.

Although I have not yet had a respected halachic authority as a guest on GSN as of yet (stay tuned for season 2!) when I developed the concept of GSN I was in consultation with a number of Rabbinic authorities who all encouraged me to proceed with the program.

Etan G - the Jewish Rapper - really enjoyed the format. In his words,

usually when a Rabbi gives a sermon, after five minutes you want to blow your head off. On Good Shabbos Nebraska he had the crowd engaged for almost an entire hour - and 75% of it was Torah.
While I am not in complete agreement with everything he said - the show is usually much less than an hour, and I would say that more than 75% is Torah - but his point is that people are tired of sermons. The format just doesn't work - even for the best orators. That is why television features talk shows and not sermon shows.

At one point the sermon was considered a controversial innovation that was meant to engage people in the same way fashion as the non-Jewish culture. Today it has become the norm in even the most traditional synagogues. Today the talk show format is an anomaly, but who knows, perhaps one day this will be the new normal for synagogue format.

Just as Lenny Solomon elevates the songs of classic groups the like Beatles by putting words of Torah to their songs, my goal is to elevate the format of Johnny Carson, Dave Letterman, and Jon Stewart but inserting words of Torah into their format.

While it may be controversial, in my view Good Shabbos Nebraska not only brings sanctity to the synagogue, more importantly it brings people to the synagogue, and it fulfills our primary goal which is to spread words of Torah and to get Jews to love being Jewish.

That is exactly what we do every Shabbos at 10 am ONLY at Beth Israel Synagogue - where every shabbos is a shabbaton!2014/01/is-good-shabbos-nebraska-kosher.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7442829836608821412.post-2023628227764936523Sun, 05 Jan 2014 18:04:00 +00002014-02-17T11:47:37.514-06:00E13 Shlock Rockepisode 13Lenny Solomonshlock rockLenny Solomon - Best Episode Ever!<a href=" ROCK RULES!!!!!<br /

We ran a previous Essentials list which covered the top ten songs that name-drop other artists. As the title suggests, an artist mentions another artist in the lyrics. You can check it out here. Your response, dear readers, was incredible and proved there is so much more out there that we missed. We have included another ten here, all taken from the songs you suggested. We also give a big shout-out to everyone who responded and added their own to the list. A few notable ones were just outside the list: The Gaslight Anthem, High Lonesome, from their 2008 album The ’59 Sound, which steals a Counting Crows line and mentions Elvis. Ben Lee with Catch My Disease from Awake Is The New Sleep, which manages to shoehorn in Good Charlotte and Beyoncé. The Mountain Goats’ A Picture of My Dress from Getting Into Knives with the fabulous lyric “I’m in the bathroom, Of a Dallas, Texas Burger King, And Mr Steven Tyler, Is on the overhead speakers, He doesn’t want to miss a thing”. Apologies to The Band’s Robbie Robertson, as there wasn’t enough room in the ten for the wonderful Somewhere Down The Lazy River. Enjoy the reader’s list, and we look forward to more suggestions. Number 10: Lucinda Williams Ventura from World Without Tears (2003) From Williams’ seventh studio album released in 2003, this slow-building story song is about someone wishing to be somewhere else. This one name-drops Neil Young with the lyric “Take the long way home so I can ride around /Put Neil Young on and turn up the sound Drive up the coastline Maybe Ventura…” The aching beauty of the pedal steel adds to the raw, emotional vocals, a delivery style Williams uses throughout Ventura. Number 9: The National Eucalyptus from The First Two Pages Of Frankenstein (2023) New Order T-Shirt was number 2 in the original list from one of the best albums of 2023. It came at a time when the band were struggling internally, and in particular, singer Matt Berninger was finding it difficult to come up with song ideas and melodies. Eucalyptus could be about a broken relationship with a couple deciding who takes what. It could also be about the band’s potential breakup, as the lyrics ask, “What about the instruments?” As often happens, the record collection becomes the focus of any split, and it is in verse three where Berninger implores, “What about the Cowboy Junkies? / What about the Afghan Wigs?” Track two, after the plaintive beauty of the opener Once Upon A Poolside, The National treat us to another fine piece of musical theatre. Number 8: Guy Clark Dublin Blues from Dublin Blues (1995) From the album of the same name, Clark delivers the title track in his own unique style. He name-checks the Mona Lisa, but it is not the enigmatic subject of the Leonardo Da Vinci painting; it’s Doc Watson, the musical artist, who is called out. “I have seen the David, I’ve seen the Mona Lisa too / I have heard Doc Watson play, Columbus Stockade Blues”. Fellow Texan Nanci Griffith provides the backing vocals, and although he isn’t credited, Clark can be heard calling into action, “Jerry,” which suggests his good friend Jerry Douglas jumped in on dobro. A striking story of missing someone close, with such longing in his voice. When Clark sings “I wish I was in Austin in the Chili Parlor Bar”, there is no doubt it is heartfelt, and he is ready for the legendary Mad Dog Margarita and a bowl of Texas Red Chilli. Steve Earle opened his tribute album to Clark, simply called Guy, with his version of the track. This nicely leads us into number 7. Number 7: Lydia Loveless Steve Earle from Indestructible Machine (2011) Loveless’s imagery of a stalker named Steve Earle feels playful; however, it also hints at the serious danger of potentially overzealous fans. The song used Steve Earle as the target, but it could have been anyone. Her first release on Bloodshot Records, the home of Earle’s son Justin Townes Earle for his first five records, the album Indestructible Machine was an impressive, explosive collection. Many tracks were recorded as live takes at Grove City, Ohio’s Sonic Lounge Recording Studio. Justin Townes Earle almost gets a mention too, as Loveless sings “And I keep asking Steve, would you introduce me to your son / Because he read an article that said, oh gee, I guess I drink a lot”. That would have been a musical duo to behold. Number 6: First Aid Kit Emmylou from The Lion’s Roar (2012) Now, you could argue they don’t actually name-drop Emmylou Harris, but in our world, there is only one Emmylou it could be. Similarly, if you mention Dolly, we all know who you mean. The name-dropping doesn’t stop at Emmylou. We also hear June, Gram, and Johnny. The Swedish duo wrote the song about singing with someone you love, knowing any time may be the last. Cash and Carter were together for a long time, and although Harris and Parsons worked together, they were never officially romantically linked. They made some excellent music together. Sisters Johanna and Klara Söderberg have no doubt had their own issues as siblings working closely; however, they have overcome them to produce some exquisite music of their own, Emmylou a fine example. Number 5: Amy Rigby Dancing With Joey Ramone from Little Fugitive (2005) Amy Rigby’s music blends old-fashioned humour that cuts through country music with her own take on punk rock. Dancing With Joey Ramone is an excellent example of her craft. Her fifth studio album includes the song, and it is blessed with extremely clever, funny, and interwoven wordplay. At times, there’s more than just dancing going on. Not only does Rigby name-drop everyone’s favourite Ramones, but cleverly throws in so many song titles that it is hard to keep pace with it all. “They played The Worst That Could Happen by the Brooklyn Bridge / He Hit Me, and It Felt Like A Kiss / Glad All Over Needles and Pins / Be My Baby again and again.” In those two lines alone, we have a Jimmy Webb song, a nod to The Crystals, Dave Clark Five and The Searchers. Breathtaking stuff from Rigby. Number 4: Eric Church Springsteen from Chief (2011) Church made the original list, but this track from his 2011 collection Chief was so obvious we missed it. A simple premise: summers long past, and how “A melody sounds like a memory.” We all have moments when we hear a song and remember exactly where we were or what we were doing the first time we heard it. Church has always celebrated pioneers of the genre and other songs that name-drop artists, giving us plenty to go at. Number 3: Bruce Springsteen Thunder Road from Born To Run (1975) As if we planned it, we follow Church’s homage to The Boss with one from the man himself. With Roy Orbison mentioned early in the track, this is a quality cut from his Born To Run record from the mid-seventies. Just another song about cars and girls, but done so the story unfolds between your ears with each piano fill and rises to a crescendo, as much of Springsteen’s early work does. Fair to say that the subject of the song, Mary, may have considered slamming the door even on Springsteen when he proclaims, “Well, show a little faith, there’s magic in the night / You ain’t a beauty, but hey, you’re alright”, not the best chat-up line you are ever going to hear, but the rest is splendid poetry. Number 2: Drive By Truckers Danko/Manuel from The Dirty South (2004) From the exquisite, near-perfect concept album The Dirty South, this Jason Isbell-written classic could have been the number 1 on this list. The rhythmic drumming at the beginning draws you in as the guitar joins; Isbell’s vocal delivery is special. Often an encore in his solo live shows, the band sends Chad Gamble out first on drums, giving the rest a longer breather. That first chorus so poignant and melancholy: “Can you hear that singing? Sounds like gold / Maybe I can hear it in my head / Fifteen years ago they owned that road / Now it’s rolling over us instead / Richard Manuel is dead.” Here we are at number 2, a song from the same album that gave us the last number 1. Is that the last of the Drive By Truckers we are going to hear from? Number 1: Jerry Joseph Sugar Smacks from The Beautiful Madness (2020) As fellow writer and video editor Andrew Frolish put it, “The latest single from Jerry Joseph is seven minutes of controlled aggression and a charged political assessment of the world around him.” Joseph’s words and raw emotion stand on their own, so take a listen and prepare for lyrical bombardment and a host of Amen’s. The artists name-checked in this one are many, with hidden ones among the words. Johnny Thunders, David Bowie and Joe Strummer are the main three, but look out for The New York Dolls, Drive By Truckers aka The Stiff Boys and a personal shout-out to Patterson (Hood) from the Truckers. The Truckers play on the song, so once again have a hand in the number 1 spot, but the words are all Joseph, Amen. /essentials-the-top-ten-songs-that-name-drop-other-artists-auk-readers-choice/feed 2 189979 Lawrence Rothman “Here Lies Love / Sawdust to Stardust” /lawrence-rothman-here-lies-love-sawdust-to-stardust /lawrence-rothman-here-lies-love-sawdust-to-stardust#respond Thu, 01 Oct 2026 12:30:42 +0000 /?p=190110 Powerful confessional lyrics drive Lawrence Rothman’s journey to the dark side of Americana. For their fifth album, Here Lies Love / Sawdust to Stardust, Lawrence Rothman has brought an ‘A‘ list of collaborators, including Madi Diaz, Amanda Shires, Katie Pruitt, Jason Isbell and Jillian Jaqueline. Written and recorded in Biarritz, France, and Nashville, Tennessee, and produced and mixed entirely by Rothman himself, the album leans to the darker side of Americana in its tone, with rich, deep vocals from Rothman, reminiscent of Nick Cage, and arrangements at times in Hannah Aldridge/southern gothic mould. Variety, though, is the spice of life, and in its thirteen tracks the collection draws on the full range of Americana voicings, while always centred by Rothman’s distinctive vocals. Opening track The Meaning starts with stripped-back acoustic guitar and vocal, with a reflective lyric “Why am I breathing/ What is the reason/ Is anybody up there/ Is anybody listening/Who’s writing the story when I hear it in the wind/ Is the truth coming from outside/ Or somewhere buried beneath my skin”, before building atmospherically with female backing vocals and strings. Stable has at its heart facing up to challenges in life, characterised as “Wolves keep pacing my front porch/ I just starting to leave out the back door/ Trying to even the score/ It ain’t easy, but day by day I watch them wolves get a little farther away/I’m far from free, but I’m safe”, with the memorable refrain “I’ve been lying to myself that I didn’t need help, but I’m trying to turn the tables/I’m somewhere between falling apart and stable.” A powerful duet, with Sarah Klang, A Fire Test has a visceral lyric, the title a metaphor for how a relationship, however strong, may ultimately be doomed: “I’d let you fuck me over /I’d let you scar me up again/ Time could make me stronger/ Or lonelier than I’ve ever been/ When I was much younger I had a vision of us/ Staying together, growing older/There’s no beauty in losing the one you love/There’s no beauty in losing the one you love/ Our love is a fire test.” Insistent kick drum and wailing harmonica introduce the cinematic Demons, summoning up the spirit of Shivaree, firmly in southern gothic territory, vocals shared with Delaney Ramsdell, “From the sinner to the saint/ From the beggar to the king/ We all got demons/ We all got demons/ From the sober to the wasted/ The story doesn’t change/ We all got demons/ And we all gotta feed them.” The album has a confessional feel throughout, none more so than in Lost In Her Rock’n’Roll, their reflection on opportunities missed or wasted, but ultimately ending on a hopeful note: “My faint scars they glow in the dark/ Come lift my mind up from regret/ The Missouri kid in me ain’t done quite yet/ I do my best, but sometimes my best is my worst/ Always six months away from a breakthrough twenty three years ain’t it time I broke through/ I do my best and my best will get me out of my worst.” Emotional and finely crafted lyrics combine with the full range of Americana voicings, making this one of the best releases of the year. /lawrence-rothman-here-lies-love-sawdust-to-stardust/feed 0 190110 Live Review: Petunia (solo without The Vipers), The Kitchen Garden Café, Birmingham – 24th September 2026 /live-review-petunia-solo-without-the-vipers-the-kitchen-garden-cafe-birmingham-24th-september-2026 /live-review-petunia-solo-without-the-vipers-the-kitchen-garden-cafe-birmingham-24th-september-2026#respond Thu, 01 Oct 2026 11:45:12 +0000 /?p=190414 The Kitchen Garden Café in King’s Heath, Birmingham, makes you glad people still believe in putting good music in small rooms. Attached to a restaurant and garden centre by day, it becomes an intimate music venue by night, with fairy lights, wooden chairs and the kind of closeness that makes performers feel like exceptionally talented guests who have wandered into the living room you wish you had. Manager Brett has built a reputation for an eclectic programme of folk, country and indie and certainly has an ear for something special. On Thursday 24th September, this mainstay of the Midlands Americana circuit provided the perfect setting for an artist who is difficult to categorise. The Canadian Petunia stepped out of a sepia photograph and onto the stage: hand-built Art & Lutherie guitar from his homeland, rust-coloured waistcoat, dark denim, tan Oxfords with cheerfully striped socks and a cream cowboy hat with a feather tucked into it, dark hair slicked underneath. Petunia’s voice sounded as though it had travelled through several decades and across the plains to make it to Birmingham. He brought the yodel of Jimmie Rodgers, the country ache of Hank Williams, the gravel of Tom Waits and something of the theatrical sweep of Roy Orbison, all with an avant-garde punk twist. Comparisons, however, miss the point. Petunia’s relationship with time is fascinating. He has been accused, he told us, of being trapped in the past. Naturally, his response has been both to release the album I Live in the Past and to write avant-garde songs which give modern takes on timeless themes. In my view, he is an artist who has carefully collected antique fragments of musical genres to create something completely and electrically in the present. He rummages around in the musical history jumble and puts together a thoughtful and note-perfect new iteration. He can move from a 1920s song to a new composition, classic country to jug band music, tin pan alley to punk rock, without the transitions ever feeling anything but brilliant. Photo credit: Sophie Wenban Petunia opened with Bicycle Song, its “flower flakes falling in the lamplight on the street” immediately establishing a songwriter with a wonderfully curious imagination able to conjure exceptional imagery. Living in Vancouver, he asked whether we rode bicycles in the rain, then in the snow, playfully describing cycling in the snow as “a little like surfing”. This was our introduction to Petunia’s particular world: part country music revivalist, part vaudevillian, part historian, part storyteller and part eccentric inventor, with the whole impression more than the mechanical sum of its parts. And what a world it was. Petunia wore around his neck a contraption he had made from a wire coat hanger, he said with tongue in cheek, was from 1927, a kazoo and a bicycle bell, held together with duct tape. And behold, the brilliant “kazoo-sa-phone”. Selecting from his eclectic back catalogue with his band The Vipers, Cold Heartbreaker was followed by his tribute to Roy Orbison, Burnt Love Letters, a song that gave us a piece of Petunia wisdom: that there are two kinds of people: those who keep their love letters safely in a cupboard and those who “just want to burn them”. Riffing on another formative influence, Petunia performed the Hank Williams classic, Lovesick Blues. Of course, we were all celebrating Hank’s 103rd birthday week, but it was clear he was keen to avoid simply giving us another imitation. Instead, he traced the song further back, explaining its history and recommending that we look Emmett Miller up afterwards. Mercy brought us dark and moody ragtime twang with a line that suggests, “If Tom Waits could yodel/ And I’ll bet that he can,” offering a pretty accurate way of describing Petunia’s voice. A Jimmie Rodgers song rounded off the first half of the evening, and it felt as though the humming, yodelling heir to the Singing Brakeman himself had wandered into the room. The second half shone a light on the raw underground heart of Petunia’s lyrics, politically conscious and darkly poetic. Petunia provided the surreal image, “I sprinkle my horse’s mane with gopher dust.” He asked us, “Why the heck would you do that?” and took us through Crazy Horse’s vision of a spotted horse with a lightning bolt on its back, protected from bullets by gopher dust before he led the Sioux into battle, “because gophers know how to hide”. He told it with such warmth and lightness of touch that the room smiled, but the story carried the weight of generations. Photo credit: Sophie Wenban Towards the end of the gig, he offered to teach Birmingham how to two-step. The introverted Thursday-night Kitchen Garden Café audience remained firmly seated. However, we were perfectly willing to sing, especially when Petunia looked at his watch and declared it “harmony o’clock” – the point when people have drunk enough beer to join in, but not so much that we wouldn’t want to hear them if they did. A particular highlight was I’m Shakin, originally written by Little Willie John, later recorded by The Blasters and The White Stripes. Petunia’s version was bluesy, restless, and entirely his own. And this was the pattern of the whole evening. Nothing stayed where you expected it to, with a punk, avant-garde swirl of trad americana. Country became blues. Blues became rock ‘n’ roll. A 1930s song became a Petunia song. A coat hanger became an instrument. A bicycle bell became part of a one-man band. A cowboy story became a meditation on history. A joke became a song about grief. Even his voice refused to stay in one place. The audience would not let him leave, and one encore became four. Petunia self-deprecatingly admitted that he had missed quite a few songs anyway because he had spent so much time “yammering”. A particular highlight from this enigmatic raconteur was when he told us about performing on a hay wagon in a pick-your-own pumpkin patch, doing 20 sets a day for kids on field trips, 22 days in a row. Understandably, he had begun to go slightly stir crazy, and channelled this into the furiously upbeat, riotous rockabilly number, Maybe Baby Amy about the girl who drove the tractor. The evening ended with an uproarious Petunia styling of Have You Heard The News?, a full-speed rock ‘n’ roll number that seemed a fitting conclusion to a night that had refused to sit still musically. Steeped in a profound understanding of Americana music and heritage, this is a performer who knows which rules to break to reach an exciting new sound. The Spring tour with The Vipers can’t come soon enough. /live-review-petunia-solo-without-the-vipers-the-kitchen-garden-cafe-birmingham-24th-september-2026/feed 0 190414 Interview: Fischer-Z’s John Watts reminisces on 50 years of making heartfelt music /interview-fischer-zs-john-watts-reminisces-on-50-years-of-making-heartfelt-music /interview-fischer-zs-john-watts-reminisces-on-50-years-of-making-heartfelt-music#respond Thu, 01 Oct 2026 11:00:01 +0000

The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events."

Clearly Putin did not give this quote much consideration before he launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in March of 2022. He did not realize that Russia would incur the enormous casualties that they have sustained. He did not predict the death of at least five Russian generals and one admiral. He did not predict the desertion of Russian troops on Russian territory. He saw only smooth sailing when huge storm clouds loomed. He did not foresee that Zelenski would emerge as a global champion of freedom. He did not seem to foresee that his attacks on civilian targets would mobilize the sane world in opposition to his aggression.

Though modern media likes to focus on what happened only in the last two minutes, History does provide some insight into the current situation in Ukraine. There has been a long historic track record of Russian ineptitude in bilateral military actions...

<a href="; style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="193" data-original-width="261" height="296" src="; width="400" />

Battle of Tsushima
May 27-28, 1905

1) The Japanese humiliated Tsarist Russia in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5. Port Arthur was captured by the Japanese and the Russian fleet, which had sailed around the world from Europe, was annihilated at the Battle of Tsushima. President Teddy Roosevelt earned a Nobel prize for mediating the peace between Russia and Japan (Biden take note!).

2) In 1940 Stalin's Soviet Union invaded Finland hoping for a walkover. Instead he got a bloody nose losing over 120,000 lives along the Mannerheim line. Adolph Hitler, based partly on this war, assumed that the Soviet Union was a broken nation. The intrepid correspondent Virginia Cowles (See earlier blog...<a href=";) traveled to Finland and wrote this description of "the most ghastly spectacle" she'd ever seen...
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; with wrecked tanks, field kitchens, trucks, gun carriages, maps, books and articles of clothing. The corpses were frozen as hard as petrified wood and the color of the skin was mahogany. Some of the bodies were piled on top of each other like a heap of rubbish, covered only by a merciful blanket of snow; others were sprawled against the treason grotesque attitudes." (Source Looking For Trouble, Cowles, 1941).

<a href="; style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="183" data-original-width="275" height="266" src="; width="400" />

Vladimir Putin

Putin is clearly a liar and a killer ( See Killing Alexander...<a href=";). He presides over a kleptocratic oligarchy in which he is the principal criminal. Putin is one third Rasputin, one third Al Capone and one third Moriarty.

Clearly Putin failed the measure the "tides and hurricanes" (see Churchill quote above) of the war with Ukraine. As of this writing Russia seems to have sustained around 15,300 casualties in the conflict including the deaths of six general officers and one admiral. Over 100 Russian planes have been shot down. The Jerusalem Post now reports that Russian casualties in Ukraine have now exceeded those sustained over ten years in Afghanistan (<a href=";)! Putin is not just a thief -- he is a blunderer.

The full scope of the blame does not rest with Putin alone. Clearly there has also been a failure on the part of the West to deter Russian aggression in the first place. This is not entirely due to Biden's bumbling though he has much to answer for (disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal etc.). Angela Merkel and the German SDP led her country in the wrong direction for many years encouraging the notion that NATO would allow an invasion of Ukraine. Defense spending among NATO members was allowed to sag for years.

Moreover, what Churchill said about yielding to war fever applies equally to Biden and the USA and the West.

The principle foreign policy task of every US president since Harry Truman has been the necessity of avoiding World War III. Any use of nuclear weapons would be an almost unimaginable catastrophe for the entire world.

Biden cannot afford to escalate the war in Ukraine to the point where it involves a super power showdown. But, equally, he cannot afford to not stand up for western values of democracy and self determination epitomized by Zelenski.

It must, however, be noted that Zelenski's Ukraine is hardly a perfect vessel for western ideals. The Azov battalion, with its Neo-nazis, is a part of the Ukraine defense forces (<a href=";). Another Churchill quote explains the Azov battalion best: "It isn't only the good boys who help win wars; it is the sneaks and stinkers as well." Moreover, a smattering of unsavory Ukranians is insignificant compared with the ruthless over the top brutality of the Putin's invasion in targeting civilians.

Biden now faces the greatest challenge of his presidency; he must support Ukraine but not ignite the fuse on World War III. He must emerge as the "Master of events" and not "the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events." God help us all!

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; It’s a popular tourist destination, especially for cruise ships to its capital, St. George’s. And yes, as you already know, we have invaded it.

Grenada was a former French and, then from 1763, British colony. So inevitably there was a certain amount of French and British invading that went on then. During the British period, we first got involved militarily with Grenada. Nothing major but still worth mentioning.

During the Revolutionary War, for instance, American privateers targeted ships leaving Grenada’s ports. Mind you, we didn’t have it all our own way. There were also privateers operating out of Grenada that preyed upon American shipping.

Then during World War II, US forces occasionally visited the island, on one occasion allegedly attempting to set up an artillery post on Richmond Hill, but finding no suitable site.

Grenada gained its independence from Britain in 1974 but remains part of the Commonwealth.

<a href="; style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="; width="300" />

Reagan did put "boots on the ground" in Grenada...
Reagan Presidential Library, Simi Valley, CA

In 1983, Grenada was the site of America’s largest military intervention since the Vietnam War. Ronald Reagan had defeated Jimmy Carter in the election of 1980 to become our fortieth president. Reagan took a more aggressive view about confronting Communism than his Cold War predecessors. Political upheaval on the island of Grenada gave Reagan an opportunity to reverse militarily what he saw as a dangerous expansion of Cuban and Soviet influence.

<a href="; style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="188" data-original-width="267" height="282" src="; width="400" />

Reagan avenged the death of
Grenada's Maurice Bishop

On October 19, 1983, Bernard Coard, a hard-line Communist deputy prime minister, led a coup against Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, a Marxist who had assumed power after a coup in 1979. A few days later, Bishop and two other members of his cabinet were assassinated.

Even before the coup, Reagan had been agonizing about exactly what was happening on Grenada and what it meant for the United States. There were intelligence reports indicating that Russia and Cuba had been building military infrastructure, in particular a ten-thousand-foot airstrip. That summer, he had already told vice president George Bush to make contingency plans, and now Reagan didn’t hesitate for long in enacting them.

With the Organization of East Caribbean States calling for a military response from the United States and despite being warned that there would be “a harsh political reaction” to a US invasion, on October 22, just a few days after the coup, Reagan decided the invasion should go ahead.

<a href="; style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="300" src="; width="400" />

Navy Seal Badge
US Navy Seal Museum
Fort Pierce, FL

Operation Urgent Fury was launched on October 25, 1983. The US Army Rapid Deployment Force, including Ranger battalions, the 82nd Airborne Division, marines, and Navy SEALs (see...<a href=";), was augmented by a few hundred troops from Jamaica and other countries. These forces engaged about fifteen hundred troops from the Grenadian Army and about a few hundred Cuban military special forces. The fighting was short (three days) and sometimes sharp, costing nineteen American lives and over one hundred total fatalities, including some civilians.

<a href="; style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="400" src="; width="300" />

Grenada tested the "Special" Relationship
Reagan Presidential Library
Simi Valley, CA

The UN General Assembly condemned the US invasion calling it “a flagrant violation of international law” and voting 108 to 9 against it. Reagan’s ideological soulmate, Prime Minister Thatcher, was thrust into an awkward position by the US invasion as Grenada was still a member of the Commonwealth. Thatcher was disappointed by the American lack of consultation prior to taking action in Grenada.

However, there was also widespread American support for the invasion, particularly after the ABC broadcast Nightline featured an interview with American medical students from St. George’s University School of Medicine who expressed their gratitude for the invasion and towards the US Army Rangers. Americans were obviously particularly anxious about the potential for hostage taking after the Iranian crisis of 1979, so anything that took Americans out of a potentially dangerous political situation was likely to be popular.

US troops were withdrawn in December of 1983, and Grenada held elections in December of 1984. The operation can be seen as having laid to rest some of the inevitable reluctance for overseas military interventions evident in the period after the end of the Vietnam War.

October 25, the day American forces arrived, is celebrated in Grenada as a national holiday—Thanksgiving Day. Early readers could already discern his desire to get rid of "international Jewry" and his faith in the need for Lebensraum for the resettlement of the German people. The rise of Mussolini it Italy with the 1922 March on Rome provided inspiration for those with fascist sympathies though little tangible assistance for his Nazi party.

Hitler would likely have remained a minor footnote in Weimar political history had it not been for the onset of the Great Depression which was kicked off with the Wall Street crash of October 1929. High unemployment swelled the ranks of the Nazi party bringing them to power in 1933.

Simms argues, convincingly, that Hitler was obsessed throughout his adult life by the economic and military power of the British Empire and the United States of America. He admired their control of vast amounts of land and their 'Anglo-Saxon' work ethic. He deplored the migration of Germans to lands under their control. He saw America's Great Plains as a perfect answer to the challenge of Lebensraum. During WW2, he directed German industry to construct Amerika jet bombers for the Luftwaffe despite the fact that jet fighters / interceptors would have been much better for the war effort. Yet, almost inexplicably, Hitler never bothered to actually visit Britain, the USA or any English speaking country during his lifetime. How would history and our world have been different had he done so?
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; Nimitz was from the German community in Fredericksburg, Texas.

<a href=";
