Wed, 31 Aug 2022 16:33:15 +0000 en-GB hourly 1 Unhelpful Views On Helpful Content… /2022/08/unhelpful-views-on-helpful-content/ /2022/08/unhelpful-views-on-helpful-content/#respond Wed, 31 Aug 2022 15:43:47 +0000 /?p=2922 You probably haven’t heard about this but Google are launching what they’re calling the “helpful content update” that’s apparently part of a broader effort to ensure people see more original, helpful content written by people, for people, in search results. I checked out their article and wanted to review in depth what they shared to give me a better understanding of what this update entails and why they may be doing it. Any bolding below is added by me, my comments are in italics. So, what did they share? “The helpful content update aims to better reward content where visitors feel they’ve had a satisfying experience, while content that doesn’t meet a visitor’s expectations won’t perform as well.” So, this screams to me of an increase in search user data. CTR, clickbacks, time on site, volume of reader’s scream of delight, facial scan proving delight is legitimate etc etc (I know I tweeted this but I found it funny both times). Not only this but a way to conjoin this information with insights from their crack team of scurrying minions. How can you ensure you’re creating content that will be successful with our new update? By following our long-standing advice and guidelines to create content for people, not for search engines. People-first content creators focus first on creating satisfying content, while also utilizing SEO best practices to bring searchers additional value. Here Google pretend that they’ve always cared about their search results being of high quality rather than good enough. The truth of the matter is that they’re shit scared that AI created content will 1) Make their search results a mess and 2) Make their ‘advanced’ algorithms look as thick as pig shit as my dear Grandad would have said. So now they’re going all wholesome. People 1st! They know that this ‘update’ will stall content creators plans to spam the fuck out of the internet with their AI content (however well developed it is). In all likelihood, like everything else, they’ll likely go for the small fry with their generalist ‘niche’ blogs that were selling links anyway. Do you have an existing or intended audience for your business or site that would find the content useful if they came directly to you? lol, if you’ve written about a specific topic before then it means that you’re allowed to write about it… It’s an amusing admission from Google that they’re likely showing results that are as useful as a senior social media executive. Does your content clearly demonstrate first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge (for example, expertise that comes from having actually used a product or service, or visiting a place)? Anyone who is making money online via content will already be creating the best content they can already to increase its chance of ranking and show visual trust signals to the user/buyer so I’ll presume they’ll be ok? Demonstrating first hand experience by ‘using’ a product can be easily faked as well as showing a depth of knowledge. I’ll let you content creators in on a little secret, if you want to learn a decent amount about a topic, use a little known search engine called Google. Most of what you need will be in the top 20 results… Does your site have a primary purpose or focus? In a way I kind of get this but there could be many reasons why a skilled and knowledgable person may be sharing their ideas and opinions on a completely different site. Again, I think this is Google trying to control what and where people put information online to make their lives easier (this is an understandable request considering people fall over themselves to do whatever they recommend). After reading your content, will someone leave feeling they’ve learned enough about a topic to help achieve their goal? Did the reader click back into the SERPs? Did our team of minion website reviewers click the happy face or the sad face? Will someone reading your content leave feeling like they’ve had a satisfying experience? Not really sure this is much different to above? Unless this is to do with site usability, web design or they really are using those little cameras on your computer. Smile! x Negative signals? SEO is a helpful activity when it’s applied to people-first content. However, content created primarily for search engine traffic is strongly correlated with content that searchers find unsatisfying. I would love to see the data behind the ‘strongly correlated’ point. I mean I don’t really doubt it because a large amount of content online is utter shite but this is the game that Google has created. They have helped shape how people create content and so they have to take part of the blame for why searchers are unsatisfied with their results. As previously mentioned, it isn’t so much about giving the user ‘amazing’ results (although they’d probably like to) but rather that they give the user enough to ‘feel’ that their search has been satisfied. An interesting distinction. Answering yes to some or all of the questions is a warning sign that you should reevaluate how you’re creating content across your site: Is the content primarily to attract people from search engines, rather than made for humans? Again, the smart bastards have been covering this base for years because it actually ranks better. Who’d have thought that including vital information, answering the questions that people have on a topic and adding your own unique spin would be such a tricky concept?! Are you producing lots of content on different topics in hopes that some of it might perform well in search results? Will be interesting to see how some of the authoritative generalist sites like news websites do with this ‘update’ – They obviously tend to cover a lot of different topics and aren’t specialists just because they’ve got ‘journalists’. If the behemoths manage to keep their traffic then you have to ask why they included this part in their commandme… propagan… article. Are you using extensive automation to produce content on many topics? And here comes the crux of the matter. The little bit they were just trying to slip in… Extensive automation, now how could that be done? I definitely won’t be doing that! Are you mainly summarizing what others have to say without adding much value? I mean yeah, this is the internet. We all steal ideas from one another without adding any value whatsoever. Deal with it Top G. This goes back to adding your own unique spin whether it’s a viewpoint, theory or group of ideas. Added value can be pretty much anything as long as it’s semi relevant because Google doesn’t know any better… Are you writing about things simply because they seem trending and not because you’d write about them otherwise for your existing audience? A trend can nearly always be brought back to another ‘relevant’ subject in some way or other, however tenuous the link but yeah, make sure that you only write about rubbish for your waste management client(s) and leave trending topics alone. Are you writing to a particular word count because you’ve heard or read that Google has a preferred word count? (No, we don’t). No, you don’t but the SERP’s do. There isn’t a ‘specific’ word count because different topics require different levels and volumes of information. Example, You’re writing 500 word articles for keywords where the results feature 2000+ words then good luck! Additional information This update introduces a new site-wide signal that we consider among many other signals for ranking web pages. Our systems automatically identify content that seems to have little value, low-added value or is otherwise not particularly helpful to those doing searches. I probably should have moved this part higher because a new site wide signal is interesting… Automatically judging low value content as a whole rather than at a specific page level. Have their minions been able to put patterns together that state that low value content all has *these variables* in common so that they can automatically judge things without looking at the content itself? This ‘update’ will be rolled out slowly, likely with little feedback until they choose to turn the dial and amp it up a bit. Any content — not just unhelpful content — on sites determined to have relatively high amounts of unhelpful content overall is less likely to perform well in Search, assuming there is other content elsewhere from the web that’s better to display. For this reason, removing unhelpful content could help the rankings of your other content. I liked this point. Sites that feature unhelpful content will have the rest of their results ‘diluted’. This is an interesting move and is probably the part that is used as a scare tactic to get SEO’s/content people/whoever to remove or edit content to ‘save’ the rest of their results. Also sounds a bit like Panda v2 to me. Get rid of your shit content because we don’t want to crawl and index it anymore! A natural question some will have is how long will it take for a site to do better, if it removes unhelpful content? Sites identified by this update may find the signal applied to them over a period of months. Our classifier for this update runs continuously, allowing it to monitor newly-launched sites and existing ones. Our continuously running tool that can review things automatically will take months to review your shitty site, sorry! This classifier process is entirely automated, using a machine-learning model. It is not a manual action nor a spam action. Instead, it’s just a new signal and one of many signals Google evaluates to rank content. Minion and user data —> Machine learning. Refine, adjust, refine. Continuous automatic automation. Should expect huge changes *crickets* This means that some people-first content on sites classified as having unhelpful content could still rank well, if there are other signals identifying that people-first content as helpful and relevant to a query. The signal is also weighted; sites with lots of unhelpful content may notice a stronger effect. In any case, for the best success, be sure you’ve removed unhelpful content and also are following all our guidelines. This is the excuse for the newspapers and other large media sites ranking well. Hmmm, what could those additional signals be? Right, apologies for all that. I wanted to have a deeper think into this update and thought that writing it would be a better way than thinking on it or discussing it with someone. Hopefully it has been of use, even if just for some light comic relief away from your daily grind. One of the primary reasons that I stopped writing on here was because I stopped finding topics to write about. If I keep my ear to the ground then I might add some stuff on here now and again. Any additional thoughts? Anything that I’ve missed that is glaringly obvious? Anything that you disagree with? Dear reader, if your humble narrator can lay claim to such amazing feats then you too have ‘it’ within you to succeed, in your own little way. And all without having to pay off one judge! Proof of concept! Has this idea worked previously and if so, in what way? Whether it’s shares via Instagram, likes via Facebook, number of links, estimated monthly visits… Blah blah blah, the same metrics, every time. Marketers want proof that that an idea within their niche has been successful in the past. But they’re also… Driven by the fear that a new, original idea will not gain any traction. Driven by the potential consequences of a failed project. Driven by the arse covering that these previous pieces of content and their metrics allow you. Driven by laziness and a wish for doing something as easily as possible. And in a way that they already know and can do in auto-pilot. And they do it again, and again, and again, and again. This creates a content rut. Low risk, low reward, low quality. Nothing to define them from their competitors. Nothing that excites their readership and makes them think —> “These guys get it!” Nothing that deserves to rank any higher than the original idea. I am sure that there are people out there that only do projects that have a proof of concept. Is this wrong, no. Are you likely to ‘win’, probably not. I am sure that there are people out there that come up with incredibly *unique* ideas, go with their gut. Not backed with data and see mixed results. Uniqueness is not a guarantee for success. However by floating in between. Shards of potential shine through. I know that what I’m about to write isn’t groundbreaking… What a surprise for the industry and this ‘blog’. But the way you can clutch on to your precious metrics and create something new enough to actually cause a stir within your industry Is by stealing the general idea that ‘works’ and combining it with: Something topical (potential limited shelf life this but it works). Something related but not previously seen or mentioned (this joining of dots can be priceless). Something very strange (people are used to a certain type of content, this juxtaposition is risky but fun). Your brand spankingly new, originally unique, never before thought of idea. This way you get your metric crutch and your ego lead addition. Where you can credit your genius if it succeeds! And point at previous metrics if it fails! I know reading that back it sounds really obvious. 1 + 0.1 = v1.1 Indulge me. I’m a simple man compiling his thoughts, writing on vapour. However the way you can potentially take this a step further and gauge the risk is the degree in which you stray from the original idea! Think of it along a grid 1st project with a new client? Perhaps it’s best to make something that is likely to work and get adequate results. 1 + 0.1 = v1.1 2nd project? 1st project did ok, nothing impressive but you have room to grow and express your ideas a bit more 1+0.25 = v1.25 3rd project? You have been backed by success, you’re able to take the reigns off a bit and do something more *high* risk. 1+0.4 = v1.4 And this is that format within it’s most basic form. Be careful out there. You can also gauge the risk of a content project by reviewing the following: The mentality of the client, the investment involved, the length of time worked with the client, the number of previous content projects, your previous successes, your knowledge of the industry, your contacts within the industry. There are probably loads more. I’ve got a bit lost in this article, I just wanted to write again and I felt like I had some points I wanted to share. If you wish to discuss in more depth leave a comment, send an email or tweet. To vanquish an old dragon! Over the weekend, a client of ours was hacked into and bombarded with links. The fiends created a large number of dummy pages. That featured awful, spammy, computer generated content. That was being linked to from (in the main) awful looking websites. With EXACT ANCHOR TEXT (shudders). This attack was carefully planned, co-ordinated and quickly executed. Yes, we sorted it out very quickly, aren’t we amazing etc etc. Within 2 days there was nearly 1 million new links pointing to their new pages. These pages created visibility to the site, to the tune of 100,000 new keywords. And not just any old keywords. Our client ranked 3rd for an entertainment term that is searched 1,500,000 times a month. They also ranked 1st for another one that is searched 980,000 times a month. There were loads more. Keywords shooting out of every orifice. A real horrorshow! It’s safe to say, the client hasn’t received traffic numbers like this before… But, this sort of thing shouldn’t *still* work right? Google *should* be flagging this sort of thing. Some sort of pattern recognition, aha? When 1 MILLION new links are pointing to: BRAND NEW pages. That include PURE GIBBERISH as content. On a topic that is TOTALLY UNRELATED to the website. In a very SHORT TIME FRAME. And nothing gets pinged? Does this read like Backlinko? No flags at all? Who is writing good content about sEO nowadays? Nothing? I wasn’t born yesterday. I didn’t for one second think that this sort of thing could no longer be done. However I did think that there would be some sort of dampening, penalisation or straight up ignoring Of Crap like this. Yes, the time frame was short. Maybe within a few days it would’ve been nuked. Yes, there is a chance that it was ignored due to the authority of the client. And they just let them get on with it. But maybe I think too much of Google? Maybe we all do? Keep testing on your own sites. I’d recommend leaving the client sites alone for stuff like this… This shit still works and maybe always will. ]]> /2021/03/black-hat-seo-thriving-in-2021/feed/ 0 4D Keyword Research /2017/07/4d-keyword-research/ /2017/07/4d-keyword-research/#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2017 18:53:49 +0000 Sup 0110ersss I know, I know, it’s been a while. You may or not have noticed that I’ve been away for a bit? I’ve been working on new things in and out of the marketing world and thought I might write something for da lolz. It’s nice to have the site back to myself again after the SEO fame experienced before. Anyway enough rambling. Lets get to it. There are some cool keyword research resources out there but everyone knows about them already and sometimes you’re trying to find areas that aren’t obvious to your 3rd eye. You’re after the ‘secret sauce’ that gets you a unique insight above your competition. In my absence I have found that there is a ‘real world’ out there and you can do stuff in it! So whatchyado? Watch – Watching videos/films about your subject – How do these people interact, what do they say, what kind of body language do they display? How does this make you feel? Discuss – Offline store? Visit it, talk to staff, customers etc. Maybe get dressed up and try and make it obvious that you’re a mystery shopper? Listen – Conference? Visit it, mingle, listen, discuss ideas with your fellow man. Orrrr do what I do and go along, learn nothing and talk to no-one. Up to you! Read – Follow all big hitters on social media, read their favourite things of interest, what are the topics/mantra’s that are constantly repeated? Get out of your head 1 – Go on a run, gain access to subconscious. Do an extremely heavy deadlift and discuss your ideas with God. Get out of your head 2 – Take hallucinogens with a product (wrench, 3d printer, fish). Competition – Check the #1 site in the market (o.k so the client will say it’s them but check out the real #1 (not always the #1 result for the ‘big term)) – Export a crying toad report and check out what terms they use for page titles. Primarily – Be sure to include these terms in your 3d keyword research zzzzzzzz. Secondarily – Compare it to your site layout, how does it differ? Do they offer products/pages that you don’t? Why? As an aside when you’re deciding on you page title formatting check out the top ten results for 5/10 of your ‘vital’ terms to see how your competitors write them. I guarantee you’ll pick something cool up by doing so. Hold a seance – Ask the dead for tips on what they’d search for (you may have to explain the concept of Google and the internet but give it a bash). Survey locally – Knock on doors, send letters, spam emails. Whatever. Find out what local people are looking for (even if you don’t sell it yet…) and give it to them. Simple. Ask anyone for their opinion – Some resources will tell you that you have to drill down to find a specific persona. Your average shopper is male, 35, overweight, wears glasses, hates his fucking life and is partial to r/gonewild (if you don’t know, now you know…) Brilliant! You should now use the majority of your resources targeting this demographic, right? Nope. If you want to maintain your sales then yeah cater for them but if you want new customers and your business to grow it’s worth considering others and that means asking anyone and everyone. Make sure that you take notes of 1) what the person is saying and b) what you are thinking when listening to them. These additional areas/terms can be very useful when checking for potential traffic numbers in SEMRush. lol. ]]> /2017/07/4d-keyword-research/feed/ 0 1 Amazing Relationship Building Tip You’ll Never Believe Exists! /2014/08/1-amazing-relationship-building-tip-youll-never-believe-exists/ /2014/08/1-amazing-relationship-building-tip-youll-never-believe-exists/#comments Thu, 21 Aug 2014 13:26:38 +0000 I wake up and the first thing I think about is SEO/outreach/relationship building/sharing content. What’s wrong with me? (don’t answer that). Does this nightmare ever end? Short post discussing an idea I’m not sure I’ve heard anyone mention. One of the biggest problems that people often have when trying to ‘build relationships’ with influencers within a niche is that they have nothing to offer. You know deep in your soul that your boring, rehashed, poorly designed infographic/blog post/video/whatever isn’t going to impress anyone important and is unlikely to gain links without paying for them. Soooo, what’s a girl to do? Well. And I know this may be seen in some agencies as controversial but… If you’re not currently creating content that is worth sharing. How about sharing something that is brilliant/amazing but wasn’t made by yourself or anyone you know? You know like how normal people recommend things to one another. Send over something legitimately interesting/awe inspiring and the ‘influencer’ will thank you before thinking “Wow that was extremely cool, I wonder what other gems they’re hiding away!” That’s when you can come back and bombard them with your ’17 quirky facts about Venezuela’ infographic. Or something. I’ve pulled you in for a quickie today, don’t worry it’ll be over pretty quickly. The ‘authorities’ within the industry have stopped writing or are definitely less prolific. The spike of dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin when publishing a post & gaining social shares is no longer getting SEO ‘writers’ as high as previously. SEO’s/’People’ are generally sharing less and favouriting more via Twitter. It’s fucking boring to write about. They now have to actually do some work, their bosses have put writing on the back-burner in exchange for removing links. SEO posts get social shares but are rarely linked too. People are learning that you can write in other niches than SEO… It’s fucking boring to write about. Old traffic generators like Inbound are ghost towns. People have learned to keep the best information & their processes to themselves. I was going to write 10 reasons but I didn’t like the title and more importantly I couldn’t think of another reason. Doubt I’ll be writing again on here. To those that haven’t read it here’s a brief definition of Antifragile. “Some things benefit from shocks; they thrive and grow when exposed to volatility, randomness, disorder, and stressors and love adventure, risk, and uncertainty. Yet, in spite of the ubiquity of the phenomenon, there is no word for the exact opposite of fragile. Let us call it antifragile. Antifragility is beyond resilience or robustness. The resilient resists shocks and stays the same; the antifragile gets better“. “Simply, antifragility is defined as a convex response to a stressor or source of harm (for some range of variation), leading to a positive sensitivity to increase in volatility (or variability, stress, dispersion of outcomes, or uncertainty, what is grouped under the designation “disorder cluster”). Likewise fragility is defined as a concave sensitivity to stressors, leading a negative sensitivity to increase in volatility. The relation between fragility, convexity, and sensitivity to disorder is mathematical, obtained by theorem, not derived from empirical data mining or some historical narrative. It is a priori“. Unfortunately we’ve got to admit that it’s rare to find an ‘SEO’d’ site that is antifragile. In fact the more ‘SEO’ work that has been done on behalf of a site the greater it’s fragility before any algorithm update. This may have not been the case a couple of years ago but Google is now showing that they will not lay back and allow SEO’s to take the piss. In their eyes you’ve had it good for too long. There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of different techniques that you can use to develop that perfect SEO strategy but how do you know when you shouldn’t be doing something? When everyone else is. The more a technique is used, written about and discussed the more fragile it is. The more fragile a technique is the more chance Google will fuck it (and you). This isn’t a post to tell you to purposely go your own way (although you probably should). To be different just for the sake of being different. It’s a reminder of the things that matter. Variety of strategy, testing, idea/tactic recall (the most important and very underrated area) and learning how to shut your fucking mouth once you’ve learnt something decent. It’s simple and easy to mock the low level content that is written within our sphere but a lot of you forget that there is also a shit tonne of brilliant (free) articles out there that many of you have ‘read’ but have forgotten. Make good use of your time, keep learning, be the best SEO that you can and create an antifragile strategy that doesn’t just float along avoiding penalties but thrives post update(s). p.s. This isn’t a fucking rant. ]]> /2014/03/antifragile-seo/feed/ 2 Maximise ‘Success’/Minimise ‘Failure’ /2014/03/msmf/ /2014/03/msmf/#respond Tue, 25 Mar 2014 22:29:34 +0000 Failing is good! You can only really, truly excel and accomplish your dreams if you’ve failed first! Maybe. To be honest I’m not the biggest fan of failure quotes or the overuse in the media of motivational quotes in general. There are many reasons for this but the principle ones are: 1 – Telling people that they’re not absolutely useless for failing is a good thing (for their ego’s) but telling a loser to keep going despite continuous failure is a bit shit (hint > you never read about these people…) 2 – 99% of ‘motivational’ quotes lack substance and rarely motivate for longer than 10 seconds. We all know (at least) one poor soul, totally addicted to the motivational principles of others that in turn turns them into a crushed husk of neurosis, unable to start anything let alone finish something. 3 – They are part of the hard work culture lapped up by us proles. Anyway enough about me and my vapid thoughts, excusing myself for doing nothing with my life… Talking (writing?) about absolute failures, I’ve been reading that a few of you have been failing recently, maybe this will help, although for some of you I truly hope not. It’s not easy to get back up and try to turn your life around every time life knocks you down. But it’s not impossible. There are examples you could look to, of people like Chance Welton, who turned their life around by taking opportunities and starting their own business to help others. Entrepreneurs and successful people all have stories about failing and failing until they succeed. Remember, you only need one to invent the light bulb once, but you might fail a hundred times to get there. Getting knocked down is an inevitability. But it doesn’t mean it’s the end. So… we all fuck up from time to time, particularly when doing something new but how can you make sure that you make the most out of your complete and utter (let’s not forget, totally down to you) failure? Fail late. Failing early brings negativity and confirms initial fears. “I can’t succeed”, “I knew I couldn’t do it”, “It’s too hard” Wah, wah, wah. We’ve all done it. Early, simple wins result in positivity. Reinforcing your reasoning for taking this task/project/whatever on in the first place. You build up some confidence/knowledge, win some small battles, and then… Then you fail. Combine the time you have taken doing this so far (the longer you spend doing something the more you rationalise that it’s a task worth doing…) with an increase in confidence within your fragile psyche and you get a more resilient foot soldier. You know that you were bound to encounter a problem or two at some stage, perhaps you just need to adapt your strategy. So how can you increase the chances of you failing later rather than sooner? Simple, move your easiest tasks to the start. Review what you have to do. Place the tasks in order of simplicity (if you’re learning something for the 1st time this may prove tricky as you might not know whats easy and whats hard, I really haven’t thought this through. How about take a guess?) which should prove simple enough… Then get going through the list. Succeed, keep going, you’ll glide along until something goes wrong. Like the title? Sex sellsss. In today’s issue our secret SEO appears to be a bit upset with a certain section of the industry. As normal if you’d wish to vent about a client, company, co-worker, the SEO industry, this blog etc get in touch! ———————————————————————————- You Know What Really Rips My Knitting? Small time cliquey SEOs with big egos and attitudes. Here’s the deal. I work as an SEO in what could be considered a “big” agency. I’ve worked for many years on clients that certain cockstar SEOs could only dream of. I’m conscientious, I work hard, I know my stuff inside out and I have achieved some great results and amazing campaigns over the years. I’ve even won a few major industry awards along the way. But you’ve never heard of me, and that’s good. I work with some incredibly talented and knowledgeable people. Indeed, some of the best in the industry. Most of them you’ve never heard of. In fairness I work with some of the worst too but that’s just big agency life. The shit ones usually get found out and move on to somewhere in-house pretty quickly. But that’s a different rant But here’s what gets me. I’ve met various big name SEOs over the years and often they are very nice, very decent people. Oops, sorry, no those are not the ones who get me. The ones who seriously get on my goat are egotist wankers who might have known what SEO was 10 years ago but spend their days now promoting themselves at conferences while their provincial companies fill the web with spam. I was introduced to one once and within minutes he informed me that my company doesn’t do very “sophisticated” SEO. Like he would know what the fuck we do. The week previously I had uncovered a quite frankly pathetic blog network trail that had his company’s grubby fingerprints all over it. I decided not to mention it and sent the details to Google next morning. Dick. He also forgot that his barely literate blog posts are both public and popular. I therefore knew the weaknesses in one of the previous blog posts he had written and proceeded to school him on it. Arse. Didn’t get a single drink from his group either, after buying them all one. Says it all really. SEO awards bring out the worst in certain smaller SEO companies. I’m glad to say my agency tends to conduct itself in a friendly and decent way. I’m sure that’s not the case 100% of the time, especially with drink involved but you know what I’m saying. Put it this way, we would not boo the winners of an award in an award ceremony. No matter which competitor won. To this day we don’t know what we did wrong. Maybe we’re not part of the clique, maybe we stole someone’s client, maybe we shagged their wife. We’ll never know but to that company / those people I say – Get over it and try not to be dicks all your life. In summing up, I’d say don’t judge an SEO by their company unless they started or own the company. In which case you should feel free, the arseholes. ]]> /2012/10/the-angry-seo-3-maybe-we-shagged-their-wife/feed/ 6 The Angry SEO #2 – Dear Useless Bastard… /2012/09/the-angry-seo-2/ /2012/09/the-angry-seo-2/#comments Tue, 18 Sep 2012 10:23:09 +0000 So last week’s post by Angry SEO #1 appeared to have struck a chord with you guys. I think it’s nice to be able to anonymously vent about a client, company or co-worker so if you would like to do likewise get in touch! In today’s issue SEO Anonymouse appears to have a few issues with a co-worker… This post not only made me laugh but appears to have had a positive effect on our Angry SEO “It’s been cathartic and I feel better for it, exorcised.” Great news! Have a excellent week kids ———————————————————— Dear Useless Bastard, Yes you, the person who thinks they know this shit but doesn’t. The person who’s been fucking things up for as long as there’s been a website. Yes you, that person who has talked bollocks to everyone who knew no better and lead them down a path of misinterpretation. This is for you, because you are everywhere, you keep popping up like a bad penny and you waste everyone’s time money and energy, and if it were allowed I’d put you in a cage and squirt you with a water pistol, hourly. You see, in that meeting we all had, I couldn’t really sit there and tell you to STFU. I couldn’t, and to be frank would rather not waste my time and energy with you because you are like some house of cards, some matchstick house out in a hurricane, I’ve seen more substance on the knee of a sparrow but pfft. I had to smile and disagree gently, I had to spend ages telling you politely that you were misinformed and that your understanding of things digital was a little out of kilter. I had to use 10,000 words of nice and spend ages painting pictures and telling you stories. I did tell you this was pro bono right?I can’t help that my gentle metaphors were lost on you, I can’t help that you mentioned that you had a myspace page. That was your doing. I wanted to tell you that it’s actually 2012 but thought that the big calendar on the wall was clue enough. Maybe I’m a big baby but look, the moment when you smiled at me with those squinty little piggy eyes of yours and tried to diminish what it is I do was your first and biggest mistake. Why did you do that!? Do you think I’m some kind of weak mother fucker!? Does my 6 foot 200lb frame of confidence tell you nothing? Do I really look like I’d just sit there and take your nonsense!?You dismissed PPC out of hand. Ok, it can be a tricky one. It needs work (like most things) and tbh was never a big focus for me, but it’s still worthy of consideration and with a bit of honing can be very useful but I digress. The point is you dismissed it and sneered at it, having never even entertained it in your 4 years of tenure. Why? because some nameless ‘professional’ as you called them, told you it didn’t work! Right. The worst part though, was when you dismissed my whole objective and had the cheek to refer to what I do as that ‘SEO’ thing; when you tell me that you’ve done ‘social media’ and have a background in ‘twitter’ then my instant reaction as I grapple to hide my drop jaw face expression is that really, you know shit worth knowing and need to just shut up. When you confuse a fucking email newsletter as digital marketing, when you fail to… OH FFS. What’s the use. The point is that going forward, you need to either just fuck off out of it or STFU. I don’t really mind which. If you’re extra nice then you even carry with that email marketing thing, for now. I think it’s fair to say that I don’t like you. You my friend, are my proverbial fart in a sleeping blanket, stifling and sickly and not very nice. And yet, in that meeting we had I had to be all nice and tippy toey. It’s a new relationship after all and I don’t want to go and alienate everybody as for some crazy reason most of the people in the room have overtime, bought in to your skewed idea of how this shit works. God knows what you’ve told them as their traffic dwindled or never really got off the 22nd page of Google. I’m a believer in karmic outcomes so I’m going to speak to your boss and tell them indirectly that someone needs to communicate that I’m not here to nick your job or show you up for the knob that you are, I’m far more tactful than that. I get that your insecure and that’s fine, we’ve all had those times at one point or another. In fact if you were smart you’d see this for the big opportunity that it is. A chance for you to check back, relax, learn and if you’re really smart take credit for the upsurge when I’m gone. The thing is that I have a job to do. I’ve been asked by your boss to give my opinion on his product, that opinion will look at the whole product. It’ll look at everything it is that touches that website. It’ll look at all the opportunities, it’ll look at processes, keywords, traffic, conversions. It’ll look at who’s doing what where when and how often. It’ll give views on your competitors, what they do, why they are winning, why they are doing better than you. It’ll try and inform and educate and move forward. It won’t take no for an answer and will do its utmost to drive this piece to where it needs to go. To do that, it needs buy in and flow. It needs people to be 100% on board with the strategy and tactics presented. If we want to play Beethovens 9th then we need more than a glockenspiel and a metal triangle!! We need everything to be played in harmony, all of the pieces need to fit in with all of the others, in the right way, at the right tempo, otherwise it just ain’t fuckin beethovens 9th! So I guess you could say that this is a little warning. I won’t involve you in much of anything going forward as I have all the access I need, FTP, uid’s, psswds, root access, WMT etc etc blah. I’ll get your boss to buy in completely and he’ll be directing all of the stakeholders to where it is they need to get to. We will be playing Beethovens 9th, eventually. You can ding the triangle. PS. CEO’s, bosses, owners who know jack. You might have one of these people in your organisation fucking things up and bullshitting you daily. Train their arses or GET RID. 1. If your sales are poor, then ask them why. 2. If your rankings and traffic are crap ask them why. 3. And if you don’t really know or fail to understand what it is they tell you then seek a second opinion. It’s your business, the jobs of 100’s may be at stake, don’t let it die a death just because some knob jockey told you it was ok. POSTSCRIPT if you are anything like this person then please, just stop it. Go see a shrink, get counselling, have a wank more often but whatever you do, just stop it. Thanks. tl;dr “Give your SEO a chance, stop, listen, absorb. Don’t be rude, don’t be a know all idiot” ]]> /2012/09/the-angry-seo-2/feed/ 2 The Angry SEO #1 – I Am Not A Magician… /2012/09/i-am-not-a-magician/ /2012/09/i-am-not-a-magician/#comments Thu, 13 Sep 2012 09:25:25 +0000 I’ll stop adding guest posts when people stop sending me stuff. Today we have a heart felt plea from SEOBastard, a fine young fellow who just wants to be understood. ———————————————————— Dear client, It may not have occurred to you at the time you hired me to do your SEO for you, so I’d like to spell it out for you: I am an SEO expert, not a fucking magician. For clarity: I do not violently jerk rabbits out of hats, juggle fireballs or perform for children’s birthday parties. I don’t have a comely assistant and the only things I can make disappear are tin cans of microwavable chili. I’m not David fucking Blaine over here. I am, in fact, responsible for dealing with the structure and content of your website and leveraging those to best satisfy the merciless dream crushing machine known as Google. It’s okay though, I know the two are awfully easy to confuse. I’m more like a chef. If you give me the right ingredients, I’ll whip you up a goddamn chicken cordon bleu meal so good your eyes will roll back until you can see your frontal lobe. But if you supply me with an ongoing pile of horseshit and dick-all, don’t be surprised if turd sandwiches are the only thing on the menu. In other words, I need you to reply to my recommendations and actually do some shit on your end. I know you’re busy running a business and you’d probably rather not be responsible for writing a bunch of poppycock or tweaking your code. Good news: you don’t need to. There are people for that. But contrary to popular opinion, I do not keep top rankings stuffed up my ass for easy retrieval. I’m out there wrangling hot opportunities like some sort of perverted cowboy. All I’m asking you to do is step in and take advantage. There isn’t some secret garden of links I can just go merrily traipsing through like a school girl on morphine. We’ve gotta create that shit. Get people talking. Make people care you exist. This is high school prom all over again, and right now you’re the acne-laden chess co-club captain wearing sweatpants and khaki shorts. I’m trying to help you sort it out. All I need is for you to give slightly more than no shits about your online presence. We’re trying to do some marketing here. You want more online leads? Sales? Market share? Give me MORE to work with. This is basic-ass math. With love, Your SEO ]]> /2012/09/i-am-not-a-magician/feed/ 9

Today we have a guest post by Patrick Hathaway, who is currently the in-house SEO for promotional gifts company Ideasbynet, although he will be joining Hit Reach shortly (and has already started building links for them…) You may have seen Patrick around on your travels by The Saloon and previous posts on this humble blog are here and zere. Yeah, thanks Sean… The following image was sent to me via a close source within the Google webspam department. A warning notice email that Google are desperate to keep under wraps. It is said that Matt was working ridiculous hours and was slowly starting to unravel. Exhausted after writing every GWT warning notice manually he just flipped, came in with a Bing tattoo on his forehead and was babbling on about how he was going to start his own fucking payday loans company. My source has also begged that I keep this image under my hat or share it within a small circle of peers, knowing the traffic numbers on this blog I knew it would be safe here. Today I have a guest post from Irish Wonder one of the savviest SEO’s I’ve read and talked too. We’ve gone down the road of a mysterious SEO thriller. Enjoy! Disclaimer: the story is based on true events but all the names and website URLs have been changed. Any resemblance to actual people, agencies or sites is coincidental and accidental. Part 1, In which we set the scene and meet Jenny, the honest whitehat. It was a warm, bright late spring morning. On a morning like this, nobody expects any bad news. But Jenny got a call from her boss telling her that the traffic to one of the main clients’ site has dropped badly all of a sudden. She started digging into the logs and stats and blog posts… Jenny has been working for a mid-sized online marketing agency for a few years already. She considered herself lucky enough to get the trainee position right after graduation. Her family was not particularly happy with her getting into this whole Internet thing after she had spent so many years studying serious stuff but Jenny felt this was where the future is. Over time, she learned a lot of things and progressed in her career, and she liked her job. She was subscribed to all the popular SEO blog feeds in her RSS reader and usually read them in the morning during her commute to work. … They named it Penguin. It was the “anti-spammer” update Cat Mutts had warned about weeks before. Jenny spent the whole weekend in the office with a few people from her team, digging the stats and analysing the SERPs and trying to find some rhyme or reason to it – and finding patterns only to see them overthrown completely by the next analysed set of the SERPs. It just did not make sense. There were too many signals involved, and the way they interacted in each case was totally unpredictable. Jenny’s team was a squeaky clean whitehat operation. They never did anything sketchy that could put a client’s site at risk. And this was a “Spammer” update… what a kick in the butt! Never before have they lost a site, the horrible Panda had never hurt them in any of its incarnations – but this was something new, scary and inexplicable. Rumours had it that the client was quite impulsive and, being pitched things, could act without much syncing with the agency. Could it be one of the side contractors doing something dirty, promising him quick returns? Jenny did not know for sure. The common verdict on Penguin (much in line with the official Google’s stance) was that spammy links were causing problems and they had to be removed. It had been a few weeks after the initial drop when Jenny’s team finally dug out some really weird links. That was when they started showing up in the site’s Webmaster Tools account. But it was not just a link or two – there were thousands of them all of a sudden. Jenny’s suspicions of a side contractor’s activity grew stronger. How does one go about removing links? They have always been building links, but removing them? The whole team was bewildered and unsure of how to approach the task. Weeks after weeks, they tracked down site owners and sent out emails. Only this time, it was not begging for links, it was begging to remove links. But hope was vanishing as most of the emails got no reply or webmasters promised to remove the links only to forget about the plea. Eventually, they gave up. The client’s traffic was stale, despite a few bad links finally getting removed. The new idea that Jenny had was to build a few quality links so that maybe that would change the balance and the site would get better. More weeks passed, yet the evil Penguin didn’t seem to loosen its grip. If only Bing had a bigger market share, Jenny sometimes caught herself thinking. In Bing, the client site did not drop. But even if it did, Bing has just announced this shiny new disavow tool where you could just drop all the bad links you had no control over and be done with it. Truth be told, Jenny never used the Bing disavow tool and was not sure if using it actually resulted in sites ranking better, and there were only anecdotal references online to people testing it – but in all seriousness, who has ever cared as much about Bing penalties or bans as people did about those in Google? Yet, the disavow tool was considered a great step forward and an example of a search engine open to working hand in hand with webmasters, so Jenny stuck to the same opinion. She even started dreaming of reading the news one morning of Google launching a disavow tool of its own. And that morning once arrived… Part 2, In which using the Disavow Tool leads to more discoveries. Despite the rain outside, the spirit in the office was elated. Banners reading “Welcome Disavow Tool” were hanging across the room. It was like somebody’s birthday party. People were smiling, many of them for the first time in the last few months. Jenny read the official Google announcement twice on her mobile during her commute and re-read it once more when she got to the office. She watched the video taking notes. She read the launch coverage in all the main industry blogs. The instructions seemed vague and the warning sinister, but that was better than nothing. Jenny was hopeful. She knew all the bad link URLs by heart by this point. They had managed to remove quite a few links, now it was time to deal with the stubborn ones that they could not manage to get rid of for various reasons. Just one last check in the Webmaster Tools, and she will be ready to put together the disavow submission. … This cannot be right, Jenny thought 20 minutes later glancing over a CSV with links downloaded from the Webmaster Tools. At the top of the list there was a domain she had never heard of before, with a total of over 1,500 links pointing to the client site from it! The dreaded sitewide links… Every newbie in Jenny’s team knew from day one sitewides were a no-no. Building a sitewide link was like confessing of stabbing your own grandma. Nobody would have ever done it for a client site. The gloomy shadow of the mysterious evil side contractor that had been rumoured about for the first few weeks since the site drop became almost material again. Either that – or the dreaded N word, a negative campaign by a competitor or just some sick individual haters with too much time on their hands. The client, however, never had any real issues with online reputation or too many bad customer reviews – nothing outstanding in their niche anyways. Who could possibly hate their site so much? But Jenny had to look at the actual site linking to their client. Maybe, just maybe it’s one of those links that somehow occur naturally, like because of a “Recent Comments” blog plugin – maybe their client commented on some blog that had this functionality in place? Hmm, not likely, their client didn’t really do much by himself, even when asked to do something specifically. Or maybe it’s some scraper – there haven’t been many of them in the SERPs lately but it doesn’t mean they ceased to exist completely. Maybe, just maybe it’s something that can be easily fixed, after all we now have the disavow tool, if nothing else works we will just disavow it, right? – thought Jenny. Little did she know. When she looked at the site in question, what she saw was nothing like she had expected. It was one single page, with no link to the client site anywhere! But where did all those 1,500 links in Google Webmaster Tools report come from? Hours later, after doing lots of digging, Jenny still has not managed to discover anything meaningful. Apparently the site was pretty new judging by its whois data, Web Archive had no records for it, Jenny felt lost and did not know where else to look for any clues. How can you do anything about links that do not exist? Yet, she felt these links could be the ones causing trouble, at least partially. She was at her wits end. With an uneasy heart, Jenny went home at the end of the work day. She couldn’t sleep that night, thinking of possible ways to uncover the mystery that was torturing her. By morning, she made a decision. She would ask for help. Luckily she knew someone who could probably solve this puzzle. Part 3, In which a blackhat consultant steps in and the mystery gets solved. Shane woke up late. His head was hurting a bit after last night’s secret meet up with some old school blackhat buddies. He wasn’t a very public person and wasn’t going to many SEO conferences (after all, being in business for over a decade, what new could he hear at those conferences? and what valuable info did those sissy whitehats that most conferences were infested with, possess and could share anyway?). But he loved an occasional informal get together with fellow old schoolers. They have all been in SEO for ages, since before it even got the name of SEO. Shane didn’t drink much usually but last night one of the guys threw a party to celebrate the much-anticipated purchase of a really cool and old domain name that nobody was supposed to mention in public as one belonging to him. Only the closest circle of old time friends knew and celebrated – and boy did they celebrate! But it was time to get up. Shane noticed a few missed messages in Skype on his iPad. Somebody has been pinging him all morning. He looked at the name. It took him a while to remember who it was. Somebody called Jenny. Ah yes, that whitehat girl he ran into at that free conference afterparty last year that he got tricked into going to by one of his friends. The afterparty was ok – quite a few of his old spammer friends turned up so it was fun catching up. And this girl, despite her being whitehat, at least wasn’t the close-minded kind of a whitehat, she did not start any of the stupid “ethics” talk, just asked a few rather naive questions and clearly believed in Google’s good intentions. But what could she possibly want now? Another hour later, after a shower and a coffee, Shane finally could be arsed to reply. “What’s up”, he typed. “Sorry to bother you Shane but I don’t know who else could answer a question I have”, Jenny typed back. “And why would I want to answer your question?” asked Shane. “Out of love for SEO maybe? Oh, and I’ll buy you a drink next time I see you”, said Jenny. “How likely is that, huh! OK, go ahead with your question.” The question was indeed quite interesting, thought Shane. It’s not every day that you see examples of Google being broken that are so vivid. He started digging. Digging this one was no easy task. No archive, apparently due to the site banning the archive bot in robots.txt (he guessed that through some Web Archive clues as the actual robots.txt file was no longer available). No Google cache for a single page of the site, due to a nocache meta tag that likely was in place. Yet, 1,500 pages indexed – for a site that no longer exists… By searching for bits and pieces Shane managed to recover off no longer existing pages, he finally got some clues. The picture that unveiled before him looked magnificently evil and terribly stupid at the same time. Next day, Shane pinged Jenny in Skype. “Ready to hear the weirdest story you’ll ever hear?” he asked and proceeded telling her about what he had found. … Once upon a time, there lived a spammer. He may appear smart to some, but those who know better would notice at least a few mistakes he made. His business model consisted of finding a competitive niche, finding a large site with plenty of content in that niche, copying all of that content and putting it on a newly registered random domain. Then he would spam some links to it, let it acquire minimal PageRank and proceed by selling links off his new site via one of the link selling sites that did not care much about the quality or background of their equity. Because his sites were plenty, in different competitive niches, and with lots of pages, and he would sell sitewide links, the business was profitable. It went on for months without a glitch until he scraped a site in the same niche as the client that Jenny’s agency was working for. The site he scraped belonged to the people that did not like anyone messing with them. Infact, they were known for taking people to court for even lesser reasons – and winning in the court. A few years ago they messed up the business of a certain company that was their competitor because that company’s representative was careless enough to get caught accusing them of things that could not be proven. They first did not notice the scraped site but eventually it started ranking better than the original, biting off a good piece of their long tail traffic (which, because of the nature of their site, constituted the larger part of traffic). That’s when they decided to show the spammer nobody could mess with them and filed a DMCA complaint. Only, instead of sending a copy of that DMCA complaint to Google as it usually is done when content gets stolen, effectively leading to the offending pages removal from the SERPs and DMCA notices appearing in those SERPs instead, they forwarded it to the spammer’s host. That’s when all the hell broke lose. The host removed the site – what Jenny was seeing was the default Apache page. However, Google did not know about it. Over 1,500 pages were still in the index, still outranking the original scraped site for a bunch of long tail queries. Google Webmaster Tools backlink report still showed them all as well, and they were still causing trouble for Jenny’s client, although it was now impossible to do anything about them. How do you remove the links that do not exist? How do you disavow them? Things were ultimately broken. “So”, Shane said then, “you have two options now. Either wait till Google actually catches up and reindexes the site and sees that those pages no longer exist – or go to Google URL removal tool and submit all the 1,500 pages, one by one, and pray that they take action fast.” There was a pause in the conversation. Jenny was digesting what she just heard. After a long silence, she said, “Thank you” and finished the talk. Anyway enough from me… Before I start, let’s just get one thing straight – Yes, Google need our websites so they have content to serve their users, but we need Google a hell of a lot more than they need us. We have no ‘right’ to be included in their index, nor do we have any right to good rankings. It’s their party and we should play by their rules. It doesn’t mean we have to like it. As per my recent rant on the Zazzle Media website, Google penalised my company for unnatural links, and I got pretty pissed off about it. Using both internal and external resources to get links removed for resubmission, we have wasted LOTS of time and money. Despite all my begging and pleading, Google won’t take their foot from our throats (if fact I think they forgot they had it there in the first place). 2 things piss me off more than anything else: Apparently the penalty they placed on our site is manual (hence the drop to page 6 in the SERPs), but whenever we submit a reconsideration request they perform an automated check. We have removed thousands of links. But there are thousands more that we cannot get removed as the sites have been abandoned or their owners do not respond. So here’s my brand new idea* – Google should monetise the appeal process. *Based on no research, evidence or indeed, facts Literally – if we want them to look at our reconsideration request, we should just pay them to do it. WTF? Why Should We Pay Google? I’m not talking a fortune, maybe £1000 or so, enough for someone at Google, an actual real life human being, to actually look at our website. Look at our content, look at the links we have developed over the last 2 years, look at what we are trying to do now rather than what we have done 5 years ago. If they came back to us and said that we were going in the right direction but still had to get rid of a big list of links, at least we’d know and could get on with it. If they accepted that we aren’t the devil’s spawn and removed our penalty, I’d do I little Irish jig and give myself a hi-5. I’m not even Irish. The crucial thing is that we wouldn’t waste money doing it unless we genuinely thought it might get us somewhere. According to Matt Cutts himself, around 20,000 domains have received unnatural links messages. It would only take 5% of these sites to pay for a manual review once for Mr Cutts to make himself a millionaire. You can thank me later Matt. I Ain’t Paying Google Shit. I’ll Just Wait For The Link Disavow Tool A lot of SEOs have expressed concern that this mystical link disavow tool will give black hatters an unwieldy amount of power, as they could test throwaway domains and figure out the optimum spam link balance. Well, why don’t they just monetise that as well? Say you had to pay £1 for every link you wished to ‘disavow’. Maybe some black hatters will still do their experiments, but it would certainly be a big turn off. I, on the other hand, would go and write Mr Cutts a cheque for £1000 for the 1000 links I simply couldn’t remove. I doubt we’d go the whole hog and spend £10,000 get everything removed, as there may be more cost effective ways of doing it. But at least the option would be there if we are struggling. Maybe Google Just Want You to Spend More on Adwords They probably do, but they surely don’t want companies to just abandon organic search altogether. In our case, I believe that our website no longer deserves the penalty, but Google will not listen to me. If I paid Google to listen, hopefully they’d agree with me. I’m not sure I even care whether they agree or not, if I at least know they’d definitely looked at it. Either way, there must be thousands of other sites in a similar position, whose re- inclusion in the SERPs would be beneficial for the user. If Google still cares about its core product at all, they will obviously agree that a better user experience for organic search users will increase PPC revenues anyway. With all the time spent removing links over the last few months, we have stopped producing quality content for our website, contrary to what Google wishes us to do. Ditto for agencies whose client content budget is now being wasted on link removals. Time and money is being spent on removing links, so why not spend it with Google and save ourselves a load of time? Then we can all get on with making videos of cats and babies. </rant> ]]> /2012/09/im-wasted-here-i-should-be-matt-cutts-wingman/feed/ 15 101 Post Penguin Link Building Tips – STFU!! /2012/09/101-post-penguin-link-building-tips-stfu/ /2012/09/101-post-penguin-link-building-tips-stfu/#comments Tue, 04 Sep 2012 08:35:30 +0000 Hey kids! Guest post time! Today we have a penguin based rant via Chris Dyson one of the smartest UK SEO’s going and fellow CEO of Link Builder Awareness Day. I don’t always like to swear when writing my blog posts but sometimes I have to. I was brought up in a northern town so we have a terrible grasp of our native tongue plus swearing (cussing) makes you look big & clever. I think there’s a study on some social media blog that shows a high correlation between number of swears & number of shares somewhere…probably? Anyway as you can tell this is another angry northerner with a gripe. I’m absolutely sick of all these “post-penguin” safe link building tactics/strategy posts. They offer nothing new, no science, no data just unfounded claims based on 8 years as an SEO that blog comments & social bookmarks are Penguin-friendly. You’re an expert on a f***ing algorithm update that rolled out less than 6 months ago? GTFOH!!! If you are contemplating hitting publish on your next post-penguin link building article then please stop and wait for a minute and complete this brief survey. Do you have a case study? Do you have some REAL data to share? Can you swear on your mother’s grave you are not just writing a post because all the big kids are doing it? If you can answer yes to these 3 points then please feel free to hit publish. None of us are 100% on Penguin recovery & survival yet. We know it’s to do with links We know there are correlations with over use of anchor text We know blog networks & low quality directories are being deindexed But right now not one of us are 100% qualified to say what does or does not work all the time, every time. If you want to learn from some real link building pro’s then go follow Ross Hudgens, Jon Cooper, Jason Acidre or James Agate on Twitter. Please feel free to rant in the comments I’m off to get a beer. ]]> /2012/09/101-post-penguin-link-building-tips-stfu/feed/ 16 Leaked Documents Reveal Google’s Plans for Rio 2016 /2012/08/leaked-documents-reveal-googles-plans-for-rio-2016/ /2012/08/leaked-documents-reveal-googles-plans-for-rio-2016/#comments Wed, 01 Aug 2012 10:48:21 +0000 In line with Google’s mission to organise the world’s information, Google has deemed it necessary to take over running of the Olympic Games, starting at Rio 2016. The Google Organising the Olympic Games (GOOG) Committee is committed to delivering the best user experience for everyone involved in the Olympics, including but not restricted to the sponsors and other international brands. GOOG is determined to stage a mostly athlete-centred Olympic games, whilst retaining a significant focus on legacy and/or sustainability. Google will determine the winner of each race based on their clear athlete guidelines: Competitors must compete ‘naturally’ – compete as hard as you can, without competing so hard that it looks like you cheated. Do not under any circumstance pay for performance enhancements, but if you do, make sure it looks like you haven’t. Any competitor, regardless of ability, may however pay Google directly; in which case the highest bidder will succeed. Athletes may gain a competitive advantage by changing their name by Deed Poll to the name of their specific event (e.g. ‘Men’s Synchronised 10m Platform Diving’) – this is considered a strong indicator to Google that you are good at said event. Similarly, if other competitors refer to you by the event name rather than your real name, Google may reward you. Google may also punish you however if this happens too often or by people that Google does not deem worthy. In some events the winners will be predetermined by Google. At all times, in all competitions, you must wear a white hat. Any athlete found to have secretly worn a black hat may be ejected from the competition at any moment. Competitors are encouraged to attract sponsorship, however displaying too many sponsor logos may result in elimination. Competitors may not Tweet, Like or ‘Pin’ photos of the events, but sharing via Google+ is highly encouraged. You may find at any stage that a competitor teleports in front of you – this is normal, and definitely not a result of said competitor paying for performance enhancements. In some events, Google may decide to enter their own team, who will always win. At any stage during the competition, a large black and white animal may land on your head. This could be deemed to be your fault, and as such you may be disqualified. Competitors that appear to have won may find they have been disqualified without notice. Competitors who may have taken performance enhancements in the past may receive an email notifying them of ‘unnatural speeds’. They either should or should not take action because of this. If another competitor has copied your exact performance, this could be deemed to be your fault and may result in a penalty. Rules may be changed at any point, even during a race. Athletes looking to fine tune their performance may contact an external training agency, although they may choose to contravene all of the here-stated rules. For any competitor that finds themselves disqualified, they may submit their appeal to Lord Cutts, who may choose to get back to you, but may not. By participating, watching, talking about or hearing about the Olympics, you give Google the rights to all of your personal information to use however they wish. This is a guest post by Patrick Hathaway, who is in-house SEO for promotional gifts companies Ideasbynet and Yes Gifts, and is currently promoting his rather cynical view of the Olympic sponsors via this interactive infographic: Advertise to a Generation ]]> /2012/08/leaked-documents-reveal-googles-plans-for-rio-2016/feed/ 11 How Google Webmaster Tools Helped Me Write This Post… /2012/07/how-google-webmaster-tools-helped-me-write-this-post/ /2012/07/how-google-webmaster-tools-helped-me-write-this-post/#comments Mon, 30 Jul 2012 14:39:25 +0000 The title is a bit facetious. A play on Joel’s rants of late if you will. No, Joel’s right (though methinks I will have to craft a Princess Bride post…);but I digress. The impetus for this came from Dan Shure, for one, and directly from Sean, our host, himself. Dan suggests writing more technically-focused posts; and, Sean wanted me to write something actionable for readers. I’ve recently been looking at my blog’s stats via Google Web Master Tools. I came up with a few ideas while spelunking in there the other day. Contest Closed Shut Are you running a contest on Twitter, or using other marketing means to host such consumer ‘partays’? Perhaps you’re hosting the contest page on your blog. Hopefully, the contest gains much interest. What happens when entries are final or the contest is completely done? At that point, you don’t want Google showing your contest site link in search results. Moreover, Google may host that page link underneath the major heading for the site domain. That would be misleading also taking real estate away from another page G may feature (such as the blog or service pages). Tell G to “86” that now unneeded site link. Do this: To demote a sitelink URL: On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want. Under Site configuration, click Sitelinks. In the For this search result box, complete the URL for which you don’t want a specific sitelink URL to appear. In the Demote this sitelink URL box, complete the URL of the sitelink you want to demote. (From WMT: you can demote up to 100 URLs, and demotions are effective for 90 days from your most recent visit to the Sitelinks page in Webmaster Tools.) Kind of a Big Deal in… Where in the world is your brand relevant? For instance, I know Alessio Madeyski optimizes sites in several areas of Europe. I don’t know if he markets his own services in those areas. If he did he can communicate with Google about it. Have you noticed some site URLs end in country code? For example “.ie” represents Ireland. What if you were kind of a big deal in France? Wouldn’t you want to target that area of the globe? You can. If you gave a ‘geo-netural’ domain ending, such as .com, Google will assume you want to market evenly across the globe. If you could not get a geo-specific one during domain name purchase, but would like to target a specific location, communicate it like this: To set a geographic target: On the Webmaster Tools Home page, click the site you want. Under Site configuration, click Settings. In the Geographic target section, select the option you want. If you want to ensure that your site is not associated with any country or region, selectUnlisted. However, think about it. It helps optimize toward a specific location, but is also making it more difficult for consumers in other lands to find you. Is your site and services segmented, meaning some portions of the

I’ve made a recipe that emails me once a week to check out my Delicious bookmarks. Ridiculous! I have attached the Monthly sample report for one of my client. You can see the performance of the keywords in the first tab and activities done for the campaign in other tabs. You will be receiving the monthly report in the same format for your campaign. Your payment would be as follows: Payments schedule will be the same for any package, let me provide you with an example of Bronze package for 10 keywords. Your first month payment will be Upfront for USD 120 after 20% discount for the Bronze package, you will pay the second payment after you receive the first month performance report, which we deliver you in 30 days from the date you made the first payment. However you will receive two on page reports within 30 days as discussed and monthly report after 30 days. Third payment you will make again after you receive second Month performance report. Now once your 3 months are completed, and you receive your third month performance report. You just have to pay USD 20 per keyword p/m appearing on Google page one. So the fourth month payment will be as per the keywords ranking on Google page one, suppose there are 4 keywords ranking out of 5 keywords on Google page one you will only pay USD 80 as a fourth month payment and so on in coming months. However we will keep working on other keywords in order to bring them on Google page one. You can add as many keywords as you want in coming months by paying just USD 30 for first three months from the month you will introduce the keyword and USD 20 after 3 months if it is appearing on Google page one. All keywords should be introduced in different phases. First phase keywords should be in the combination of long tale local keywords with medium competition. After 2 months second phase will include long tale keywords with high competition and after four months third phase will be of Generic keywords. We are working on many projects wherein we are working for 150 to 200 keywords and have provided them Google page one positions. So gradually we can increase the list of keywords for every campaign. Please feel free to revert back in case of any query. ——————————————————– Wow, our spammer friend had sent me a picture of himself without me even asking. We suggest taking advantage of this great tool. Our Methodology We utilize the latest technology in their optimization methods – Semantic Indexing (SI). SI analyses content to identify a group of keywords and the context in which these keywords are used as opposed to focusing on a single keyword which can have multiple meanings thus delivering an incorrect search result to a search engine browser. This ensures the relevancy of the content when displayed to the browser and allows websites to be displayed to a more targeted audience. The benefits of SI optimisation are three-fold: Search Engines recognize SI techniques and use this, alongside other specifications, to rank a website naturally. SI moves the optimization industry further away from the spam techniques that were previously employed to achieve successful natural list rankings. Spam techniques are now being regularly identified by Search Engines and websites utilizing such unethical techniques are being penalized. We deliver an integrated SEO solution that incorporates the following areas: Initial Research Keyword Research: working alongside our clients we identify a range of short-tail, medium-tail and long-tail keywords to optimize as part of the SEO campaign. Identification of search volume and competition for keywords helps to determine which keywords to target for quick results and which to work towards as a long term goal. All keywords are signed off by our clients during month one as they are an integral element of the SEO work. Some Suggested Keywords and Rankings for www.play.com Competition Analysis: through analyzing your own competitors we gain a better understanding of your industry, the look and feel of competitors, how successful they are in achieving natural listings, how you compare to them and the areas in which we need to improve your website to be able to effectively compete. On Page factors Meta Tags and other html tags creation: ensuring that meta-tags and html creations are correctly implemented will aid the spiders in assessing your websites relevancy to a search term. Also these are the first impression of your website on the visitor who found your website in SE’s. Optimization of the website content: assessing your current website content will provide valuable insight into the current keywords that you are promoting to the Search Engines. Through altering the keywords to reflect those agreed during the keyword research stage, the next step is to optimize the website content on existing pages. This is undertaken on the actual web page content and not on the metadata as was previously the case with SEO. Generating additional website content relevant to the chosen keywords: it is often necessary to create additional web pages for your website to extend the amount of relevant content contained within your website. As websites are ranked on relevant content ensuring that the content displayed has the correct level of keyword density for maximum optimization is vitally important to effective SEO work. Off-page Factors Back-link creation (link building): The creation of links to your website is one of the main components of off-page SEO activities. Link Building is a method of linking your website to another website through a one–way link based on a common theme. Search Engines consider one-way links as a major factor is allocating a page rank to a website. The higher the page rank the more weight it carries in SEO terms. Historically link building has been misused which has resulted in websites being banned by major search Engines. We only employs manual techniques to secure one-way links from “quality” websites that offer added value to your website and are linked by your chosen theme to complement your website. Website and article submissions into search engines and directories: A directory is a collection of information divided into categories and subcategories which each contains links to relevant websites. The directory allows browsers to search through the listings to find the information they require. Search Engines deem links from quality directories to be very beneficial links as the individual directory webmasters manually choose which links to include in their directories and therefore these are considered to be quality links relevant to the search category. In addition, quality directories are indexed regularly which ensures that your new website is indexed quickly by Search Engines. Search Logic identifies the directories to which your website will be submitted. Account Management and Reporting Dedicated Account Manager: it is only through creating and maintaining a solid relationship between your company and a Search Logic dedicated account manager that we can ensure the delivery of an Online Marketing Campaign that exceeds your expectations and meets your strategic objectives. The ability to contact your account manager by telephone, email and MSN ensures clear, open communication channels and allows you to maintain the exact level of contact and control that you desire. Detailed SEO report delivered each month: as an integral element of account management you will receive a monthly report detailing the activity that has occurred in the previous month and the results which have been achieved on your behalf. Your dedicated account manager will discuss your report in depth with you each month. 1. New England Conservatory faculty members Tanya Blaich, on piano, and Katharina Radlberger, concertmaster and chamber musician, on violin, had just concluded their concert, “Tales of Spring,” in the Serenity Room at Nahant’s Community Center. After performing works by Grieg, Beethoven, and Schumann, Radlberger addressed the audience with exciting news. “It is because of our shared love of music that I am thrilled to announce a new series that I am launching with my partners called ‘Celebrating the Arts,’” she said. “This is not a one-off endeavor, but an ongoing series designed to create live artistic experiences inspired by Nahant’s rich history and natural beauty.” Radlberger, a native of Austria and a Nahant resident since 2011, explained that the vision is “to connect as a community, and embrace one another, through music and the performing arts. We aim to bring high-quality performances to multi-generations, to invite our audience to share in the transformative power of music and artistic expression.” Though Nahant is the smallest municipality by area in Massachusetts, its rich cultural history is immense. It is the birthplace of American tennis, the first game having been played in August of 1874. The country’s first yacht races were held off the peninsula’s rocky shores. Esteemed scientist Louis Agassiz, the “Father of Glaciology,” called Nahant home, studying fish fossils on the rocks at East Point. Six past presidents have visited Nahant, and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s son John married there at a high-profile “Wedding of the Season.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow summered in Nahant and wrote some of his best-known poetry here, including “Christmas Bells,” the precursor to the carol, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” which made its debut in 1872. And so, in a town replete with precedents, it may come as no surprise that “Celebrating the Arts” is not Nahant’s first concert series in recent memory. Longtime resident Jim Walsh launched the Ellingwood Chapel Concert Series in the mid-1990s while serving on the Nahant Cultural Council. In collaboration with the Nahant Historical Society, the series brought classical music, opera, dance, and chamber performances to Nahant audiences for 25 years. “One memorably intimate performance was by pianist Maggie Cole and Boston Symphony Orchestra violinist Haldan Martinson,” Walsh recalled. “As the composition gently came to an end, it was accompanied by the clear, soft sound of weeping in the audience.” After the pandemic, Walsh retired from the Cultural Council and discontinued the series. Enter Radlberger. She became a subscriber to the Ellingwood series soon after moving to Nahant and performed in the series within months. After studying violin in Austria and earning a master’s degree in Violin Pedagogy at the University of Vienna, she toured throughout Europe, Asia, and North Africa as a freelance violinist performing with orchestras, trios, and quartets. Her love of classical music began in childhood. “My parents believed learning an instrument was essential,” Radlberger said. “My four brothers and I each learned instruments and played music together. Sometimes my father took me to concerts as a small child, and I was hooked — the atmosphere, the electricity before a performance, the majestic sounds.” At age 8, her first violin teacher instructed a group of students to play together. Her first violin teacher gave her “the most precious gift. Barely able to move the bow into the correct position with my small hand, the teacher instructed our small group of 8-year-old students to play together,” she said. “We made music,” she said. “It gave me chills. It felt magical and touched me deeply. Because of this first experience, I chose music as my profession.” To say that music occupies Radlberger’s time is an understatement. Today, Radlberger co-founded the string quartet “Fin de Siecle,” serves as concertmaster for the Lowell Chamber Orchestra, and is founder of “The Healing Violin — The Alzheimer’s Project,” which brings music to people with severe memory loss and their loved ones. Following the pandemic and the suspension of the Ellingwood series, Radlberger felt something was missing in Nahant. “It became apparent to me that artistic beauty was missing in our little town. The shared love for the arts, the gatherings, the diverse artists who could bring an audience to their feet after a brilliant performance,” she said. Supporters encouraged her to begin organizing performances, beginning with concerts in her home before moving events to Ellingwood Chapel and later the Serenity Room at the Community Center. “The connection of live performances opens hearts,” she explained. “Especially in this time, where there is much division happening in the world, the need for connecting is greater than ever. And there is a great connection through the arts.” Nahant’s new series, “Celebrating the Arts,” debuted May 9, with a performance by soprano Ute Gfrerer and pianist Leon Livshin titled “La Folie de l’Amour” (“The Madness of Love”). All four concerts in the 2026 program feature Nahant musicians under the theme “Music Surrounds Us.” Upcoming performances include “A Million Dreams,” featuring adult and children’s choirs, the Seaside Sirens and Seaside Stars. The concert will take place Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at Town Hall and promises “a vibrant choral journey through the many faces of dreaming where hope, longing, imagination, and heartbreak find their voice in music across styles and stories.” “The season promises to be fun and eclectic,” Radlberger noted. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students. Children 14 and under are free. RSVP to julie@nahanthistory.org or call 781-581-2727. Space is limited. The leather is worn thin now and softened by years of use. It’s not the kind of glove most people picture when they think of a professional baseball pitcher. But then again, there isn’t much about Katz’s path through baseball that fits the usual mold. At 67 years old, Katz walked onto a professional baseball field as a starting pitcher in the Pecos League. Most players his age are long removed from the game. Katz hadn’t even started playing organized baseball until he was 45. Growing up in Brookline in the 1960s, Katz spent his childhood riding the subway to Fenway Park whenever he could. He didn’t play Little League or high school baseball. What he loved was simply being around the game. “I never even liked recess,” he said. “But I’d go to games whenever I could — Saturdays, Sundays, and night games when I was old enough.” For decades, baseball stayed mostly in the stands. Then, at 45, Katz joined the Ponce de Leon baseball league in Fort Myers, Florida, and started attending camps staffed by former major league coaches. What began as a hobby gradually became more serious. Around the same time, he began writing biographies for the Society of American Baseball Research, documenting the lives of professional players, many of them career minor leaguers who spent years chasing opportunities that seldom arrived. Those stories stayed with him. “One of the things I learned … is the incredible intensity and determination that they brought to the field and they brought to their pursuit of baseball,” Katz said. “Hearing these stories over and over again, never letting obstacles get in their way … it just really inspired me.” Eventually, Katz decided he wanted his own chance to play professionally. After more than a year of phone calls and networking, he found an opportunity with the Pecos League, an independent professional league. He joined the White Sands Pupfish in his 60s and made his professional debut. It lasted two batters. Katz failed to record an out, leaving him with a less-than-satisfactory stat line. “I didn’t want to retire from professional baseball with an infinite ERA,” he said. So he kept going. In 2023, at 67 years old, Katz joined the Austin Weirdos. Before heading to Texas, he asked former minor leaguer and fellow coach at Manchester-Essex, BJ Weed, if he could pitch in the North Shore League against players in their 20s as preparation. Katz threw 2 ⅔ scoreless innings and said the outing gave him confidence heading into the season. “When I went out to Alpine, Texas, in 2023 with the Austin Weirdos, I walked out on that mound, and I felt like I belonged,” Katz said. He pitched five innings in his first game with the Weirdos, recording 12 outs against professional hitters and becoming one of the oldest players to start a professional baseball game. The final score mattered less to him than the fact that he had stayed on the mound and gotten some outs. After his playing days, Katz transitioned into coaching in the Pecos League with the North Platte 80s, helping lead the team to a 27-win season and a playoff appearance. He said the experience was shaped as much by the relationships with players and staff as the baseball itself. “My goal was to become a successful coach,” Katz said. “I knew it was going to be a challenge, but we ended up having a winning season and getting into the second round of the playoffs. We made it.” For Katz, coaching professionally had become the new dream. Not just wearing the uniform, or riding the bus, or being able to say he had done it, but helping build something over the course of a season alongside players who were keeping their own baseball dreams alive. He recalled a friend asking him early in that North Platte 80s season what it felt like to finally be living his dream. At the time, Katz wasn’t sure how to answer. “A lot of times, people think you’ve lived your dream when you start it,” he said. “I didn’t feel like I had accomplished anything until I drove home from Garden City after our last game.” At 67 years old, Evan Katz walked onto a professional baseball field as a starting pitcher in the Pecos League. Still, one Eagle Scout, Adrian LaPorte, set out to restore the cannon, and in doing so, he restored a community’s connection to the veterans it honors. “World War I is such an underappreciated and forgotten war. But these are people from our town, and I thought it was super powerful to be able to do the project for them,” LaPorte said. LaPorte has been in Scouting for more than 10 years, starting as a Cub Scout in elementary school. He rose to the rank of Eagle Scout — the highest rank in Scouting — just before his 18th birthday. As a part of the requirements for becoming an Eagle Scout, LaPorte was required to complete a service project known as the Eagle Project. “It’s this big, daunting thing that you know about for years, and once you get there, it’s essentially the culmination of all your Scouting skills,” he said. LaPorte added that Eagle Scout candidates do not undertake their projects alone and can call upon assistance from their troop and adult leaders for assistance. “If you need help, you reach out to the younger scouts. You have the adult leaders to help you. It’s more just that you have the confidence to agree to a project, that you are okay with it being in your hands, but you’re not alone. You just take all of that Scouting experience and apply it,” he said. After extensive planning, LaPortre set out to begin working on restoring the cannon, which took an estimated 50 hours over two months to complete. Restoration work on the cannon included replacing its wheels and applying new coats of primer and paint. The cannon is a memorial to 12 of Swampscott’s fallen. While working on the cannon, in conjunction with the historical society, LaPorte said they discovered two additional names to add to the commemorative plaque. LaPorte said during the project, he learned the “value of persistence and sticking with something. Sometimes it’s not the most appealing, or cool thing … It’s just sticking with it, even if it may not be initially the most appealing thing.” He added, “What the motivating factor is, it’s just when you create a relationship with someone through service. Whether that’s remembering the name of an older person from maybe the Historical Society or the town administrator, it’s just another connection, and it’s another relationship that you form. So, you’re not only taking on the completion of a project, and you’re only getting something done, you’re leaving with more human connection.” LaPorte’s efforts were recognized by the Select Board, where they “had actually given me the floor, which is an honor, just to talk about my project and the process behind it, and (discuss) how the Eagle project works. And they actually gave me a commemoration plaque, and what I liked was they essentially showed off the troop and basically ‘these are the next in line to do projects for the town,’” he said. LaPorte added, “It felt, honestly, incredible to be recognized. That’s not why I initially did the project, but it was definitely nice to know that people were affected in a way where they were able to see our troop as a community resource.” LaPorte will graduate at the end of this school year and will attend the Virginia Military Institute, with a four-year army commitment. LaPorte’s father, David, who has served as his Scoutmaster, said, “I have watched Adrian grow through Scouting since I was his den leader back in 2014, all the way through his Eagle Scout journey. It has been wonderful to see his confidence grow, along with his interest in serving others. His cannon restoration project was a major undertaking, requiring care, coordination, and attention to detail, and reflects his commitment to service, history, and Swampscott. I am incredibly proud of him, both as his Scoutmaster and as his dad.” Adrian LaPorte dedicated his Eagle Scout project to restoring a World War I field gun at Swampscott Cemetery. For her, roller skating isn’t just a lifelong passion. It’s something so deeply woven into her identity that she can hardly remember a time before it. “I started when I was 4,” McDonnell, 70, said before correcting herself. “Maybe sooner than that.” It’s an offhand remark, but it’s also the thesis of her life. She was born into a family where rinks were as important as kitchens and bathrooms, where lessons happened “before school and after the public session,” and where movement to music became the core of her childhood. “My folks were really, really involved,” she said. Her father, Ray, “a big wig,” as McDonnell described him, ran leagues and coached at the highest levels — “he was head of all the pros in the country in the artistic” style, “had world champions and trained the world team in Brazil,” and was the vice president of the Roller Skating Rink Operators Association — and her mother, Vernie, even graced the pages of Skate magazine in 1951. “They would call from all over the country to take (lessons) from my parents,” McDonnell said, describing the students who traveled far to learn the routines her mother would create on the kitchen floor. From those routines came championships: “My father had the most national champions in the country.” Her whole family skated. Three of them turned pro: McDonnell, her brother Buddy, and her sister Jill. Turning pro back then meant getting paid to teach. The rules have since shifted, as instructors can now also compete. The meaning of that step for Lisa was clear: Skating was both vocation and euphoria. If her upbringing gave her a foundation, McDonnell’s own choices built a life that still looks, unmistakably, like happiness in motion. “I’ve just been really lucky and healthy,” she said, but luck doesn’t set the records or guarantee podiums; practice does. Since 2021, McDonnell has skated in 10 marathons, and she has won all except two for her age group. She spoke of them with gratitude and wonder: long distances that feel like celebrations of what a well-trained body and a vibrant heart can do together. McDonnell is a gold medalist in artistic roller skating and a gold medalist in roller blading. She was also the first person in the nation to earn a gold medal for international dance, a feat she achieved as an elementary-schooler in 1974. Joy is the through-line of her story. She described the Boston Marathon midnight skate — the annual pre-marathon roll with approximately 125 fellow skaters and bikers — with excitement. She remembered the long, three-hour pushes on blades, the pedal of camaraderie and competition, and the streets that made her feel alive. And her ambitions haven’t cooled. Today, McDonnell hopes to be an ambassador for the sport, with dreams of spearheading a marathon “in this area.” Specifically, she noted that Cambridge Memorial Drive is closed on Sundays, and she envisions being able to skate down a smooth blacktop street here in Massachusetts. Additionally, she’s now chasing ultramarathon milestones. McDonnell skated a marathon in Miami, Florida, ultimately finishing with 82 miles completed, but she was not able to receive a medal. “I have to go up to 100 miles. They want you to do 200 miles in 24 hours, so I’m just trying to get up to the hundreds,” she said casually. “Next year, hopefully I’ll have a medal there.” Her sights are also set on earning a podium finish at this September’s marathon in Duluth, Minnesota, where she earned her most recent gold medal in September 2025.
