With allegations of fraud, inflated contracts, and sabotage circulating, the arrest has sparked a flurry of speculation. However, a closer look at the facts reveals a more nuanced story, challenging the prevailing narrative of power struggles and internal strife. At the heart of this controversy is Learnmore Masunda, NetOne’s Chief Commercial Officer, whose name has frequently been linked to the arrest. Some reports have gone so far as to suggest that he was the mastermind behind Mushanawani’s downfall, driven by personal ambition to secure the CEO position. Yet, sources within NetOne suggest that this portrayal is oversimplified and may not be entirely accurate. An insider revealed that the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has been investigating NetOne’s procurement and financial practices for several months. According to the source, the investigation predates any speculation about internal rivalries. “This isn’t about boardroom politics,” the source said. “ZACC has been examining these matters since the beginning of the year. The company’s failure to fully cooperate has only made the investigation more complicated.” The focal point of the ZACC’s investigation is a series of financial transactions involving Lunartech Solutions and Diztech (Pvt) Ltd. While these payments have been widely reported, the insider downplayed the notion that Masunda was responsible for orchestrating the CEO’s arrest. “To pin this on Masunda is misleading,” the source asserted. “The investigation is procedural in nature, not about personal vendettas or internal power struggles.” This stands in stark contrast to the growing narrative of factionalism within NetOne. Rumours of a power struggle over the CEO position have been fueled by the timing of the arrest. However, the insider emphasised that there was no internal coup at play. “What we’re witnessing is a regulatory process that is being misunderstood. The arrest is being misconstrued as a result of internal infighting, which is simply not the case.” In a broader context, the arrest coincides with NetOne’s 2025 Strategic Plan, which includes ambitious technology upgrades, such as the contentious SAGE system update. While the procurement processes surrounding these upgrades have come under scrutiny, the modernisation efforts are part of a long-term strategy to fortify the company’s technological infrastructure. However, questions about board approvals and financial oversight persist. As the legal proceedings continue, it is crucial to maintain focus on transparency and due process. While it may be tempting to frame the situation as a corporate battle for power, doing so risks overshadowing the institutional and regulatory challenges that are at the core of the matter. ZACC’s role is to investigate allegations of corruption, not to mediate corporate rivalries. Their widespread appeal can be attributed to several factors that cater to both novice and experienced gamblers. Simplicity and Accessibility Ease of Play: Slots are easy to understand and play. Unlike table games, which may require knowledge of specific rules or strategies, slots involve straightforward gameplay. Players simply insert their money, press a button, or pull a lever, and wait for the reels to spin. This simplicity makes slots accessible to a wide audience, including those who might find other casino games intimidating. No Skill Required: Slots rely purely on luck, with no skill or strategy needed to play. This levels the playing field, allowing anyone to enjoy the game and potentially win, regardless of experience. Variety and Innovation Diverse Themes and Designs: Slot machines have thousands of themes, from ancient civilizations and fantasy worlds to popular movies and TV shows. This ensures there is a slot game for every interest and preference at sites like . The visual and auditory appeal of themed slots enhances the gaming experience, drawing players into different narratives and environments. Innovative Features: Modern slots often include engaging features such as bonus rounds, free spins, progressive jackpots, and interactive mini-games. These elements add layers of excitement and keep the gameplay fresh and entertaining. Progressive jackpots, in particular, offer the allure of life-changing payouts, which can be incredibly enticing. Psychological Factors Random Rewards: The random nature of slot machine payouts triggers a psychological phenomenon known as “variable ratio reinforcement.” This means that rewards are given out at unpredictable intervals, which can be highly motivating and addictive. Players keep spinning in anticipation of the next big win. Instant Gratification: Slots provide immediate feedback and rewards, satisfying the human desire for instant gratification. The quick pace of play and immediate outcomes keep players engaged and coming back for more. Convenience and Accessibility Availability: Slot machines are ubiquitous in casinos, both land-based and online. They are often the most numerous and easily accessible games on the casino floor, allowing players to start playing with minimal effort. Online Slots: The rise of online casinos has significantly increased the accessibility of slot games. Thanks to mobile gaming platforms, players can now enjoy their favorite slots from the comfort of their homes or while on the go. Additionally, online slots offer a much wider range of games than physical casinos, providing an even greater variety. Social and Recreational Aspects Entertainment Value: Many players view slots as a form of entertainment rather than just gambling. The engaging themes, exciting sound effects, and visually stimulating graphics create a fun and immersive experience. Social Interaction: Some slot games incorporate social elements, such as leaderboards and community jackpots, fostering a sense of community among players. Additionally, playing slots in a physical casino can be a social activity, allowing friends to play side-by-side. Economic Factors Low Minimum Bets: Slots typically offer a range of betting options, including very low minimum bets. This makes them accessible to players with different budgets, from casual gamers to high rollers. High Payout Potential: Despite the low cost of play, slots often feature high payout potentials, including progressive jackpots that can reach millions of dollars. This potential for significant returns on a small investment is a major draw for many players. Conclusion A combination of simplicity, variety, psychological appeal, convenience, social interaction, and economic factors drives the popularity of slots. Their ability to offer an engaging and potentially lucrative experience to a broad audience makes them a staple in both land-based and online casinos. As technology continues to evolve, the appeal of slot machines is likely to grow, introducing new generations of players to this timeless form of entertainment. As more players venture into this digital realm, numerous questions arise regarding the operations, safety, and fairness of these platforms. This post puts together some commonly asked questions about online casinos, along with detailed answers to help both novice and experienced players navigate this online entertainment option. Are Online Casinos Legal? The legality of online casinos varies between country and region. In some places, such as the United Kingdom, Malta, and certain states in the USA, online gambling is legal and regulated. These jurisdictions have stringent licensing requirements to ensure fair play and protect players’ interests. However, in other areas, online gambling may be restricted or outright banned. It’s crucial for players to check the local laws regarding online gambling before participating. How Can I Tell if an Online Casino is Trustworthy? Trustworthiness in online casinos is paramount for a safe gambling experience. Key indicators of a reputable online casino include: Licensing: A valid license from recognized authorities like the UK Gambling Commission, Malta Gaming Authority, or the Gibraltar Regulatory Authority. Security Measures: SSL encryption and other cybersecurity protocols to protect personal and financial data. Reputation: Positive reviews from players and experts, as well as a history of fair play and timely payouts. Third-Party Audits: Certifications from independent auditors like eCOGRA, which make sure that games are fair and the casino operates with integrity. What Types of Games Can I Play at Online Casinos? Online casinos offer a huge selection of online casino games, which cater to diverse preferences. Common options include: Slots: Various themes, reel configurations, and bonus features. Table Games: Classics like blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and poker. Live Dealer Games: Real-time, interactive games streamed from studios with live dealers. Specialty Games: Bingo, keno, scratch cards, and other unique games. How Do I Deposit and Withdraw Money? Most online casinos provide multiple banking options for deposits and withdrawals, including: Credit/Debit Cards: Visa, Mastercard, etc. E-Wallets: PayPal, Skrill, Neteller. Bank Transfers: Direct transfer from a bank account. Cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital currencies. Players should pick a method that is secure and convenient for them. It’s also important to check for any fees and the processing times for withdrawals. Are Online Casino Games Fair? Online casinos that can be trusted use Random Number Generators (RNGs) to make sure their games are fair. RNGs are algorithms that produce random outcomes, making it impossible to predict game results. Moreover, licensed casinos are regularly checked by third-party organizations to verify the fairness of their games. Players should stick to casinos that are licensed and regulated to make sure they have a fair gaming experience. What Bonuses and Promotions Are Available? Online casinos often entice players with various bonuses and promotions, such as: Welcome Bonuses: These are offered to new players upon signing up. No Deposit Bonuses: Free money or spins given without requiring a deposit. Reload Bonuses: Extra funds for making additional deposits. Loyalty Programs: Rewards for frequent play, including points, cashback, and exclusive perks. It’s important to read the terms and conditions associated with these bonuses, including wagering requirements and withdrawal limits. Can I Play on Mobile Devices? Yes, most online casinos have mobile-friendly websites or dedicated apps, letting players enjoy their favorite games on smartphones and tablets. The mobile versions typically offer the same functionality as desktop versions, including deposits, withdrawals, and access to bonuses. What Should I Do if I Have a Gambling Problem? Responsible gambling is crucial. Lots of online casinos offer tools to help manage gambling habits, such as deposit limits, self-exclusion options, and reality checks. Players who feel they may have a gambling problem should seek help from professional groups like Gamblers Anonymous or the National Council on Problem Gambling. The following is a list of the most common game types you can expect to find at an online casino. Slot Games Slot games are the most popular type of game found at online casinos. They are simple to play, don’t need any special skills or strategies, and come in various themes and formats. Classic slots feature three reels and simple symbols, reminiscent of the traditional slot machines. Video slots, on the other hand, have five or more reels and incorporate advanced graphics, animations, and bonus features. Progressive slots are a special category where a portion of each bet goes towards to a jackpot that can grow to substantial amounts until one lucky player hits the winning combination. Prive City online casino is a trusted and secure platform that has a range of slot games to choose from. Table Games These games are a staple in any casino, and online casinos offer a robust selection of these classics: Blackjack: A card game where the goal is to have a hand value closer to 21 than the dealer without going over that number. Roulette: This is where players bet on where a ball will stop on a spinning wheel, which is split into numbered and colored pockets. Baccarat: A comparing card game played between two hands, the “player” and the “banker.” Craps: A dice game where players bet on the result of the roll or a series of rolls of dice. Poker Games Online casinos often feature a variety of poker games. These can range from traditional poker variations like Texas Hold ’em and Omaha to casino-exclusive games like Caribbean Stud Poker and Three Card Poker. Poker games can be against other players or against the house, and they often involve a combination of skill, strategy, and luck. Live Dealer Games Live dealer games merge between online and land-based casinos by streaming live dealers from a studio or real casino to the player’s device. Players can speak to the dealer and other players in real time. Popular types of these games include blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and poker. This format adds a social element and a sense of authenticity, enhancing the gaming experience. Specialty Games These games include a variety of options that don’t fit into the standard categories: Bingo: A game of chance in which players match numbers on their card to those that are drawn randomly. Keno: A lottery-like game where players choose numbers from a set and win based on how many of their chosen numbers are drawn. Scratch Cards: Virtual scratch-off cards that reveal prizes when certain symbols or patterns are uncovered. Sports Betting and Virtual Sports Many casinos also offer sports betting services, meaning players can wager on a wide range of sports events. Virtual sports, a relatively new addition, simulate sporting events using random number generators and offer betting opportunities similar to real sports. Progressive Games Other games like progressive blackjack, roulette, and poker are available besides progressive slots. These games feature jackpots that get higher every time the game is played, but no jackpot is won. Arcade Games Arcade-style games such as arcade slots, shooting games, and skill-based games provide a different type of entertainment. These games often incorporate elements of traditional arcade gameplay with the chance to win money. The dynamic interplay between an optimized workspace ambiance, a nurturing work environment, and streamlined workflows holds the key to unlocking unparalleled levels of efficiency and employee satisfaction. Navigating these aspects to foster a culture of effectiveness and motivation is both an art and a science, demanding a thoughtful approach and innovative strategies. Keep reading to discover actionable insights on transforming your contact center into a productivity and agent engagement powerhouse. Optimizing Workspace Ambiance: The Impact of Lighting and Decor on Agent Productivity The ambiance of a contact center plays a pivotal role in shaping the productivity of its agents. It’s not merely about arranging desks and computers; the interplay of lighting and decor contributes significantly to the overall workspace environment. Proper lighting ensures tasks are completed efficiently while thoughtfully selecting decor. Lighting, particularly, directly influences agents’ ability to concentrate and their overall well-being. Optimal lighting conditions can reduce eye strain and fatigue, common issues in environments with extensive computer usage. When possible, incorporating elements of natural light alongside artificial sources that mimic daylight can significantly enhance agents’ focus and energy levels throughout their shifts. Decor, on the other hand, injects personality and vibrancy into the workspace. It goes beyond aesthetics; elements like ergonomic furniture and greenery, including carefully positioned large fake plants, can make the environment more comfortable and psychologically engaging. Such modifications embellish the space, diminish stress, encourage creativity, and uplift the workforce’s spirit, ultimately driving productivity upward. Cultivating a Supportive Work Environment: Strategies for Motivating Contact Center Teams Creating a supportive work environment entails more than just meeting basic needs; it requires fostering a culture where each contact center agent feels valued and understood. Recognizing individual achievements and providing opportunities for professional growth are crucial in motivating team members. Such an atmosphere elevates morale and propels productivity to new heights. Communication lies at the heart of building a nurturing workspace. Regular feedback sessions and open-door policies encourage agents to share their thoughts and concerns, leading to a more cohesive team dynamic. This transparency helps identify improvement areas and initiate timely interventions that boost individual and collective performance. In addition to expressing appreciation and facilitating open communication, implementing flexible work schedules can significantly contribute to a supportive work environment. Flexibility in working hours addresses the diverse needs of agents, allowing them to maintain a healthier work-life balance. This adaptability results in a more engaged and motivated workforce, ready to tackle challenges with renewed vigor. Streamlining Processes and Workflow: Efficiency Boosters Beyond Technological Solutions Streamlining processes and workflow within a contact center extends beyond technological advances. It starts with a clear understanding of the current operational bottlenecks. By identifying these hurdles, management can devise strategies that enhance efficiency without exclusively leaning on digital solutions. One core aspect often overlooked is the optimization of communication channels between different departments. Ensuring that information flows seamlessly across teams can dramatically reduce delays and misunderstandings. This approach fosters a more dynamic and responsive environment where issues are resolved swiftly, and procedural inefficiencies do not hamper productivity. Moreover, refining the training regime for new and existing agents can significantly contribute to smoother workflows. Tailored training programs that focus on both the technical aspects of the job and soft skills like problem-solving and effective communication equip agents to handle complex scenarios with greater competence. This investment in development leads to a more capable and adaptable workforce, poised to meet the evolving demands of the contact center. Altogether, contact center managers can pave the way for heightened productivity and agent engagement by addressing the trifecta of workspace ambiance, nurturing work environment, and streamlined workflows. Through thoughtful attention to lighting and decor, fostering a supportive culture, and optimizing operational processes, organizations can transform their contact centers into vibrant hubs of efficiency and employee satisfaction, poised to meet the demands of today’s dynamic customer service landscape. The first being the 1st Chimurenga of 1896-1897 when we fought to unleash ourselves from suffering at the hands of the white settlers. A war we lost of course, but the audacity to fight and repossess our land from the British colonial masters never died. Instead, the dreams and visions of a free Zimbabwe continued to stir the sons and daughters of this land from generation to generation until we wedged an armed struggle (2nd Chimurenga) against the enemy in 1966. A protracted struggle in which we fought in tears, sweat and blood and attained our independence as a sovereign state in 1980. Today, we bask in the full ambiance of freedom in our sovereign state – something which began as a common dream by our fore-bearers. A dream to see a free Zimbabwean nation with its own system of governance. A dream to see Zimbabweans driving the wheels of the economy in their wondrously beautiful land endowed with vast mineral wealth and rich arable lands. A dream to see the emancipation of Zimbabweans from marginalization and poverty. A dream to see Zimbabwe romping on the trajectory path of economic development in the frail of other fast growing economies on the continent. Moreover, the nostalgia of an independent Zimbabwe free from servitude in white settler establishments and the penchant to hear the echoes of freedom songs in the streets of our towns and cities. Freedom songs in the fields of our rural communities instilled in us the resilience to fight for a common cause for which we are proud beneficiaries today – independence! Now we have 43 years of independence, being masters of our own destiny. The question is: “DO OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS TO DATE MATCH THE PROFILE & STOCK OF A NATION WITH FERVENT DREAMS TO BUILD ITS COUNTRY?” Fellow Zimbabweans, an honest answer to this spine-chilling question can be our starting point to address the substantive matters in the Zimbabwean saga – the melodramatic irony of a land with vast mineral wealth without a stable currency. The appalling irony of a country now on the receiving end of food aids having been at one point in time the ‘BREAD BASKET’ of the SADC region. A country with a political fabric marred by partisan vendettas, politics of patronage, politics of cynicism, and politics of expedience despite the fact that we are one people. Fellow Zimbabweans, it goes without saying that a divided kingdom will never stand. In present day, we are a highly polarized nation on partisan grounds and the sooner we exorcize this spirit of disunity amongst us as a nation, the better we address the question of our future and posterity. The differences we have amongst us therefore; in race, creed, dialects, skin colour and differences in various affiliations should not matter as we are all Zimbabweans today, pledging allegiance to the colours of the same flag and facing a colossal task of building our country as a united people. It therefore calls for introspection on each one of us, checking our conscience to see to it that in all of our deeds and actions we serve in the best interest of all especially those who wield influential positions in the systems of governance of our land. National polls are not stages to spark vendettas but are a transparent process in which the general populace exercises their civic duty and rights to elect leaders of their choice to represent them in the systems of governance. On the contrary, our polls are characterized by sordid democratic malpractices to include but not limited to allegations of rigging, political violence, abductions, patronage, vote-buying etc. All of these malpractices indicate gross aberration from the path of servant leadership as this type of leadership entails being elected in a scrupulous manner and putting your service over personal ambitions, integrity over expedience in service to one’s country. A virtue technically known as patriotism. | Professor Blessing Kasiyamhuru, aged 45, is President of Zimbabwe Partnership for Prosperity (ZIPP) and running for the second time as a Presidential Candidate. ©ZIPP|2023 The post Our Future As A Nation – The Zimbabwean Saga appeared first on 263Chat. ]]> 100077 JobsUnitedNations.Org: The Ultimate Source for UN Careers, Internships, Scholarships and Fellowships /jobsunitednations-org-the-ultimate-source-for-un-careers-internships-scholarships-and-fellowships/ Wed, 26 Apr 2023 18:50:00 +0000 /?p=98331 The United Nations (UN) is an international organization with a mission to maintain international peace and security, promote sustainable development, and protect human rights. It can be taking the first steps to achieving your dream or maybe setting health goals such as a healthier diet, losing weight, or starting an exercise routine. By Luke Gomes, Cluster Manager, Nestlé east and southern Africa region But are you ready to make the most out of the year? Here’s the truth, many of our new year’s resolutions don’t just happen without a bit of preparation and planning. For nearly everyone, waking up every morning means you have so many battles to fight to make it through the day. From breakfast preparations for school kids to busy work schedules and personal goals, you need to be fully prepared, both mentally and physically to find and keep your balance. Here are four ways to help you and your children prepare mentally and physically: Figure out your priorities Do you ever feel like everything is a high priority and you can’t figure out what to do first? To set priorities straight, make a list of the major tasks that you need to accomplish in order of importance. You can designate time frames for the tasks. It is also important to involve children in creating to-do lists to teach them the importance of prioritising. Also, remember to allow some time to relax, as rest and activity are the steps of progress. Find a physical activity that you love Being physically active can improve your well-being and reduce the risk of developing health complications. It can also improve your brain health, help manage weight, strengthen bones, and improve energy levels to do daily activities. Knowing the benefits of physical fitness and understanding how active you should be can help you maintain good health and improve your overall quality of life. Keeping your mental health in check Mental health is important because it impacts your emotions, thoughts, and behaviour. Being healthy emotionally can promote productivity and effectiveness in activities like school, work, school, or homecare. Keeping your mental health in check is important for your well-being. Eat healthily Following a healthy diet has many benefits. A healthy diet normally includes nutrient-dense foods from all the major food groups, including proteins, whole grains, healthy fats, and fruits and vegetables. Your body needs all the nutrients it can get for growth and repair, as well as to help you prevent diet-related illnesses. A good year started with great planning and some healthy routines will end well for you. Start implementing these ideas into your daily routines just as 2023 starts and you’ll see that you’re ready to tackle most challenges along your way. Cheers! Zimbabwe tops that list with food inflation of 353% in the month of August 2022, beating Lebanon (240%), Venezuela (131%), and Sri Lanka (91%) to the top post. The three countries above are synonymous with economic instability and widespread food shortages. Despite prolonged economic instability, Zimbabwe has not experienced food shortages in the local market in the past few years largely due to the dollarized nature of the local market as that tends to stabilize supply. Harare has been a net importer of cereals since 2006 with maize production averaging 1.3 million MT per year in the last 10 years. This is against national demand of 2.2 million MT for domestic, animal feed and industrial demands. Wheat production has averaged 133,000 MT for the past 10 years against a national demand of 450, 000 MT per year, while soyabean production averages 58,000 MT for the same period against a national demand of 250, 000 MT per year. Real decline in yield Yield per hectare for maize (the staple crop) remains very low with average national yield less than 0.9 tons per hectare (Lower than the African average of 1.8 tons/ha). The yield is also lower than Southern African peers who are largely affected by the same climatic conditions, with Namibia, Malawi, and Mozambique at 1.2 tons/ha, Tanzania at 1.4 tons/ha, Zambia at 2.8 tons/ha and South Africa at 5.3 tons/ha. Interestingly since the year 2000, Zambia has tripled its maize production with an average of 2.9 million MT per year in the past 10 years alone and constantly exporting maize to its southern neighbor. The decline in yield means that Zimbabwe has to rely on other countries for food imports. Huge Import Bill To augment limited local production, Zimbabwe is heavily dependent on importing food and cereals from countries such as Ukraine, Argentina and consistently from selected Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries such as Malawi, Zambia, and South Africa. Imports for the three main commodities (Maize, Wheat, and Soya) cost the country at least US$500 million per year for the last 7 years. Crude Soya Bean oil cost the country US$223 million in 2021 alone, making it the third biggest import after Diesel & Petrol. Rice imports (US$118 million) and raw milk imports (US$41 million) add to the huge import bill. This is before processed cereals and other agricultural commodities are factored into the import equation. Over the years, the country has been even importing millions worth of fresh commodities such as oranges, apples, pears, onions, potatoes, grapes, and other vegetable products which should ordinarily be uncompetitive to transport into the country. The huge import bill directly translates to high cost of production for local food manufacturers. For primary production, Zimbabwe relies on imported fertilizers and agricultural chemicals. In 2021, fertilizer imports eclipsed US$236 million with Urea costing US$99.7 million while Ammonium Nitrate cost US$85.3 million. With global prices for Ammonium Nitrate (AN) soaring to over US$1,400 per tonne, local farmers need on average US$80 to buy a bag of 50kg AN or Urea fertilizer. Zimbabwe’s demand for fertilizer in a good farming season is about 600 000 tonnes (both basal and top dressing), of which 70% goes towards government subsidy programs. The overreliance on fertilizer imports (which are influenced by geopolitical events) means that local farmers cannot produce at a low cost, and this translates to high food prices. High cost of production Critical to the cost of production on the farm and in the industry is the cost of fuel. With Petrol retailing at US$1.53 per litre and Diesel US$1.74 per litre in Harare, Zimbabwe has the most expensive fuel prices in the SADC region and among the highest in Africa. Zambia fuel costs US$1.36 per litre, Botswana US$1.31, Mozambique US$1.36, Namibia US$1.19, and South Africa US$1.30. For the five countries, import duties and other levies (total taxation) constitutes an average of US$0.22/litre, while in Zimbabwe taxes and levies cost at least US$0.43 per litre. The cost of fuel makes it more expensive to farm, transport farm produce, process, and manufacture food in Zimbabwe than in other markets regionally or globally. Limited Mechanization Large scale production in agriculture requires mechanization to increase yield per hectare, reduce production cost and improve efficiency. Yield per hectare locally is very low because most small holder and small-scale commercial farmers rely heavily on manual labour and other traditional methods of farming that are not efficient. Zimbabwe needs over 30,000 tractors, thousands of combine harvesters and other farm implements that are key to reducing manual labour. The level of mechanization has a positive impact on reducing production cost, increasing output value, income and return rates for all types of crops. The local banking sector and private financiers could play a key role in funding irrigation and mechanization; however, the lack of title deeds or collateral reduces any appetite to lend to most indigenous farmers. Dead Capital, Idle land Over 60% of Zimbabwe’s arable land (2.5 million Hectares) is not being utilized for agricultural production. Similarly, the utilization of existing water bodies such as lakes, dams and rivers, and underground water bodies such as aquifers and others through boreholes remains precariously low. There is potential to irrigate more than 2 million hectares of land. However, less than 206,000 hectares are currently under irrigation. A significant portion of Zimbabweans do not believe agriculture is a viable business, hence most communal land lies fallow. Additionally, resettled farmers have no bankable title to their land which makes it worthless in asset terms and difficult to access credit from financial institutions. The few 99-year leases issued to selected farmers are not legally transferable, hence they have no appeal to the banking sector in an environment where confidence and policy consistency are in short supply. The law spells out that the government can withdraw the lease and reallocate at its own discretion. This means that all the poorly resourced resettled farmers cannot fully develop their farms, invest in immovable property, or seek funding as there is no guarantee to the property. Nonetheless, efficiency in land utilization for food self-sufficiency is the most efficient way to control food inflation and manage extreme poverty. Economic Instability Zimbabwe’s monetary, fiscal, and agricultural policies on grain marketing have not been stable or friendly to the farmer. This is the major reason why several small holder farmers have given up large tracts of land for other income generating activities such small scale mining. Constraints faced by farmers range from high levels of inflation caused by central bank money printing (increase in prices of inputs and services), inefficient foreign exchange market, delays in payments by government agencies, export bans, overregulation, and lack of access to independent markets for remote farmers. A plethora of statutory instruments and laws are instituted to protect government monopoly on grain marketing to the detriment of farmers, agro-processing businesses, and the economy at large. Hence, economic instability dents agriculture viability for local farmers and increases Zimbabwe’s propensity to rely on imported food. Climate impact Food insecurity in Zimbabwe is closely tied to drought occurrence due to the country’s overreliance on rain fed agriculture and limited irrigation capacity. It is estimated that over 60% of the country receives rainfall levels that are not adequate for crop cultivation. Like most Sub-Saharan Africa countries, Zimbabwe experiences frequent and severe droughts. The country is very vulnerable to the prospects of climate change which impact key enablers such as hydroelectric power generation. Therefore, food prices increase in years that Zimbabwe receives below normal rainfall. Implementing irrigation schemes does not only guarantee food security but it allows for all year-round production (stable local supply) by local farmers who currently rely on rainfall and are being adversely affected by droughts. Impact of the war The war in Ukraine is raising food prices across the world due to supply and trade bottlenecks. Developing economies such as Zimbabwe are being hit hardest due to their reliance on the two warring parties for fuel and grain imports. Ukraine is the world’s largest producer of sunflower oil. Combined with Russia, it is responsible for more than half of global exports of vegetable oils and over 36% of the world’s wheat. The war, as well as sanctions against Russia, have resulted in a massive decline in the supply of major staple foods. This has led to a rise in food prices globally (not just in Zimbabwe). Reducing food inflation has become the number one priority for most governments. Low agricultural productivity in Zimbabwe has led to amplified poverty levels and overreliance on imports to meet demand and alleviate hunger. The country spends close to a billion annually to agriculture commodities that could be grown locally and curb the increase in food inflation. Agriculture provides 57% of raw mater

The post Broken Roads, Open Routes: How Maphisa Became a Gateway for Crime and That Is About To Change appeared first on 263Chat. ]]> In Maphisa, the road is more than a stretch of tar. It is a lifeline or at least, it should be. The Byo-Kezi-Maphisa highway is under rehabilitation (Pic By Lovejoy Mutongwiza) For years, it has been anything but. Winding through Matobo District and stretching toward key economic and border points, the Bulawayo–Kezi–Maphisa Road has long stood as a symbol of neglect. Its surface is scarred by deep potholes, crumbling edges and long, uneven stretches that force drivers into slow, cautious movement. In the dry season, dust clouds swallow vehicles whole. In the rainy season, parts of the road become nearly impassable. But beyond the inconvenience, the poor state of the road has quietly shaped life in Maphisa in more dangerous ways , enabling crime, increasing accidents and cutting communities off from essential services. For residents, the link between the broken road and rising criminal activity is painfully clear. Maphisa sits close to Zimbabwe’s southern border, making it a strategic transit point. Over time, that advantage has been exploited by organised car smuggling syndicates moving vehicles from Botswana into the country. The poor road conditions, instead of acting as a deterrent, have worked in favour of criminals. Law enforcement struggles to keep up. River desilting on the Byo-Kezi-Maphisa road (Pic By Lovejoy Mutongwiza) Police vehicles cannot maintain speed over the damaged terrain. High-speed chases are almost impossible. Setting up effective roadblocks becomes a logistical challenge in areas where the road narrows, breaks or becomes unpredictable. Criminals know this, and they plan accordingly. “They use this road because they understand its weaknesses better than anyone,” says Nkosana Dube, a local taxi driver who has spent years navigating the route. “When they are being chased, they simply speed off into sections where the road is worse. Police cannot follow at that pace without risking accidents or damaging their vehicles.” He pauses, reflecting on how routine such incidents have become. “We hear stories almost every week. Stolen cars passing through at night. Sometimes even during the day. It has made people uneasy because you realise how exposed we are.” That sense of vulnerability is deeply felt by residents like Thandeka Ncube, who lives just outside the Maphisa growth point. Her home was targeted in a robbery that she believes was made easier by the area’s inaccessibility. “They came late at night, driving a vehicle that must have come through that same road,” she recalls. “They knew it would take time for anyone to respond, even if we called for help.” The attackers forced their way into her home, taking valuables and supplies before disappearing into the darkness. “When we reported the case, the police told us they had challenges reaching us quickly because of the road,” she says. “It was painful to hear that something as basic as a road could determine whether you get help or not.” For Mandla Sibanda, a small-scale farmer in the area, the dangers of the road extend beyond crime. He points to a bend along the Gwanda–Maphisa stretch where accidents have become alarmingly common. “This road has claimed lives,” he says. “Drivers try to avoid potholes and end up losing control. Others misjudge distances because of the dust. Sometimes vehicles overturn or collide because there is simply no proper surface to drive on.” Sibanda recounts how his cousin was hijacked along the same route, in an incident that combined both the dangers of crime and the vulnerability created by poor infrastructure. “They blocked his path using another vehicle. There was nowhere to escape because the road was too narrow and damaged. They took the car and disappeared. By the time help came, they were long gone.” Such incidents have contributed to a growing perception of Maphisa as both unsafe and isolated. Transport operators often avoid the route or charge higher fares to compensate for the risk and wear on their vehicles. Emergency services take longer to reach those in need. Farmers struggle to move produce to markets, while access to healthcare and education becomes a daily challenge for many families. “It’s not just about crime or accidents in isolation,” Sibanda explains. “It’s about how the road affects everything, from safety to livelihoods.” The Gwanda–Maphisa Road is, in reality, a critical artery. It connects several districts and key economic hubs, including the ARDA Antelope Estate and the Makwe Irrigation Scheme. It also links communities to two border posts and opens up access to the tourism-rich Matobo Hills. Yet for years, its condition has undermined its importance. Now, there are signs of change. Under the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme Phase 2 (ERRP2), the government has begun rehabilitating the Bulawayo–Kezi–Maphisa Road. Construction equipment has moved in, and sections of the road are being rebuilt, raising hopes among residents that long-standing challenges may finally be addressed. For many, the potential impact goes far beyond improved travel times. A rehabilitated road could transform security dynamics in the area. Police would be able to respond more quickly to incidents, pursue suspects effectively and establish functional roadblocks. Increased traffic flow and accessibility could also act as a deterrent to criminal activity, making it harder for smugglers to operate unnoticed. “A proper road changes everything,” says Dube. “It means visibility. It means movement. Criminals prefer hidden, difficult places. Once the road is good, this will no longer be one of them.” Ncube believes the improvements will restore a sense of dignity and safety to the community. “We want to feel protected,” she says. “We want to know that if something happens, help can come quickly. A good road gives us that hope.” Sibanda, meanwhile, is already looking ahead to broader opportunities. “When the road is fixed, we can think about growing our businesses, transporting goods easily, even attracting visitors,” he says. “But first, it will give us something we have been missing for a long time, security.” Once completed, the road is expected to significantly reduce travel time between Gwanda and surrounding districts, particularly Matobo District. It will also improve access to essential services while unlocking economic opportunities in mining, agriculture and tourism. Speaking during a recent media briefing, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said the rehabilitation works are part of a broader effort to improve the quality of life for Zimbabweans. “We are witnessing the work ethic of the Second Republic, which is focused on delivering development for the betterment of our people,” he said. Back in Maphisa, the transformation is still underway. The road is not yet complete. The dust still rises. The potholes have not entirely disappeared. But for the first time in years, the journey ahead feels different. The post Transport Minister, Mhona,Urges Drivers to Protect Children as Schools Reopen appeared first on 263Chat. ]]> Zimbabwe’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, has urged motorists to prioritise safety as schools reopen for the first term, warning that reckless driving continues to claim lives. Thousands of children will now be travelling to and from school every day, and their safety, Mhona said, depends on the behaviour of drivers on the roads. According to government figures, at least 100 people were killed and 471 others injured in road traffic accidents between December 15 and December 26, 2025. The minister said many of these deaths could have been avoided. He blamed most crashes on speeding, poorly maintained vehicles, driver fatigue, drunk driving and risky actions such as attempting to cross flooded rivers. Mhona called on motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, rest properly before long trips and strictly obey speed limits. He warned that speeding is not a sign of skill but a major cause of deadly accidents. The minister also condemned vehicle overloading and driving under the influence of alcohol, saying such actions destroy families and will be met with law enforcement. “Road safety is not just about obeying the law. It is a moral responsibility,” Mhona said, adding that every driver has a duty to make sure children reach school safely and families return home alive. To support the safety campaign, authorities, including the Zimbabwe Republic Police, the Vehicle Inspectorate Department and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, will step up road checks and public awareness efforts. Mhona said the measures are aimed at saving lives, not punishing drivers. “Every safe journey is a victory for Zimbabwe,” he said. “Drivers must protect lives and safeguard the country’s future.” The post Transport Minister, Mhona,Urges Drivers to Protect Children as Schools Reopen appeared first on 263Chat. ]]> 109783 The African Finder: Transforming South African Tourism Through Authentic African Storytelling /the-african-finder-transforming-south-african-tourism-through-authentic-african-storytelling/ Sat, 03 May 2025 13:55:25 +0000 /?p=105013 By Chigamba neGanda In a bold move to reshape the global perception of South African tourism, the country’s official tourism board has appointed internationally renowned content creator Marvellous Nyongoro, widely known as The African Finder, as its new Brand Ambassador. The students are members of Millennium Promise Japan (MPJ). This non-profit organization supports development projects in Sub-Saharan Africa and promotes awareness of the continent among the Japanese. The tour was facilitated by the Zimbabwe Embassy in Tokyo, which invited MPJ to visit the country after a destination presentation in December 2023 at the Tokyo University of Foreign Languages. The students have a packed itinerary that includes visits to Harare and its surroundings, Masvingo, Bulawayo, Hwange and Victoria Falls. They will also meet with the tourism minister and local communities to discuss their observations and suggestions. The students are documenting their daily experiences on Instagram, the X and YouTube, where they have a large following. They hope to inspire more Japanese tourists to visit Zimbabwe and to foster a deeper understanding and friendship between the two nations. Zimbabwe is a key tourism source market for Japan, and the youthful segment is one of the major targets with great potential to influence a larger proportion through the social media network. The tour is part of Zimbabwe’s efforts to boost its tourism sector, which aims to achieve a 5 billion tourism economy and to align with Vision 2030, which seeks to transform the country into an upper-middle-income economy by 2030. The Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching (VFAPU) Golf Day fundraiser will be held at Borrowdale Brooke Golf Club in Harare on Friday September 15, offering golf enthusiasts the opportunity to help conserve Zimbabwe’s wildlife through participating. There is also the opportunity for businesses or individuals to support VFAPU by sponsoring a hole or putting up gin tents in the event organised by hospitality group Africa Albida Tourism (AAT) in which 32 teams will tee off for charity. Supporters may also sponsor a scout or donate funds and/or equipment to VFAPU. The VFAPU Golf Day will also include lunch, drinks, evening snacks and an auction, as well as some incredible prizes up for grabs. Brightman said the funds raised through this annual event are vital in ensuring that VFAPU’s work conserving the wildlife and natural resources within a 50km radius of Victoria Falls could continue. A record $44,000 was raised through the VFAPU golf day last year, which was used towards the costs of running the unit, such as the scouts’ salaries, repairs and maintenance of equipment, as well as fuel and field equipment, Brightman said. “Africa Albida Tourism’s VFAPU Golf Day has made a great difference in easing the pressure and challenges faced when trying to keep the unit in operation. This event, over the years, has been such a great boost for the whole team at VFAPU,” he said. Equipment donations of items such as bicycles, Land Rover tyres, boots, LED flashlights, and cell phones with 4G capabilities would also be welcomed, he said. AAT chief executive Ross Kennedy said the task of looking after wildlife and conserving the natural environment in Zimbabwe and in the region needed to be taken on with clarity and energy, ensuring that VFAPU’s fantastic work over the last 24 years was maintained. “We are very proud to be part of this process and the incredible work VFAPU does, and your support remains terribly important to those who do the work in the field and who commit a large chunk of their professional lives, energy and knowledge to it,” Kennedy said. “VFAPU is working with other stakeholders in Victoria Falls and the region to combine their efforts to maximise the benefits to conservation and the wildlife and therefore to us in general as citizens of Zimbabwe,” he said. “We urge everybody, loyal and faithful supporters as well as new ones to support this day in which every single dollar raised goes straight to the VFAPU Trust,” he said. AAT handles all the administrative costs of the fundraiser. Last year alone, the VFAPU scouts arrested 91 poachers, removed 590 snares, and rescued and rehabilitated 24 mammals injured in snares, but sadly also found the poached remains of 34 animals. Since VFAPU was established in 1999, the unit has arrested nearly 1,000 hardened poachers, removed almost 31,000 wire snares from their area of patrol and rescued 430 mammals injured in snares, treating them and releasing them back into the wild. VFAPU, which works closely with the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, the Zimbabwe Republic Police and Victoria Falls City Council, has 16 scouts patrolling seven days a week.
