Vaak staat er zachtjes een radio aan, een gewoonte op veel stallen. Maar heeft die muziek eigenlijk invloed op onze paarden, vooral tijdens de training? Het is een vraag die me vaak bezighoudt. Anekdotes zijn er genoeg, van paarden die lijken te ontspannen bij klassieke klanken tot paarden die juist opveren bij een steviger ritme. Maar wat zegt de wetenschap en de praktijk nu echt? Laten we samen eens duiken in de fascinerende wereld van paarden en muziek. Wat Onderzoek Zegt over Muziek en Paardenwelzijn Het idee dat muziek de stemming van paarden kan beïnvloeden, is niet nieuw. We kennen allemaal de verhalen over het ‘Mozart-effect’ bij baby’s, maar hoe zit dat bij paarden? Onderzoek hiernaar is best complex; paarden zijn nu eenmaal geen eenvoudige onderzoeksobjecten. Toch zijn er interessante studies gedaan die licht werpen op de zaak. Een studie uit 2015, gepubliceerd in het Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, onderzocht bijvoorbeeld het effect van muziek op renpaarden. Wat bleek? Paarden die vijf uur per dag naar muziek luisterden, vertoonden na een maand al tekenen van verminderde stress, gemeten aan hun hartslag (HR) en hartslagvariabiliteit (HRV). HRV is een maatstaf voor de variatie in tijd tussen hartslagen, wat iets zegt over hoe goed het lichaam zich aanpast aan stress. De paarden leken kalmer dan de controlegroep zonder muziek. Dit suggereert dat muziek daadwerkelijk een fysiologisch effect kan hebben. Niet alle muziek is echter hetzelfde. Onderzoek van Hartpury University in het Verenigd Koninkrijk liet zien dat paarden verschillend reageren op diverse genres. Klassieke muziek en countrymuziek leken kalm gedrag te bevorderen, terwijl jazz en rockmuziek juist zorgden voor meer alertheid en soms zelfs stressgerelateerd gedrag zoals stampen en hoofdschudden, zoals ook andere studies suggereren. Dit betekent dat je de muziekkeuze kunt afstemmen op wat je wilt bereiken: rust en ontspanning, of juist wat meer energie en alertheid tijdens een training. Het is fascinerend om te zien hoe een paard dat wat sloom is, soms net even alerter wordt bij een ander type muziek. De kalmerende werking van klassieke muziek wordt door meerdere onderzoeken ondersteund. Een Franse studie van de universiteit van Caen onderzocht het effect tijdens stressvolle momenten zoals transport en bij de hoefsmid. Hoewel er bij de hoefsmid geen significant verschil werd gevonden, bleek klassieke muziek tijdens transport wel degelijk stressverlagend te werken. De hartslag van de paarden herstelde sneller na de rit. Ook een andere studie, uitgevoerd door Ethonova in samenwerking met de Universiteit van Caen en Straatsburg, bevestigde dat klassieke muziek stressindicatoren kan verlagen en het herstel van de hartslag na stress kan versnellen. Dit is iets wat ik zelf ook wel eens toepas: bij het laden van een wat nerveus paard kan rustige, klassieke muziek soms net dat beetje helpen om de spanning te breken. Toch is het belangrijk om realistisch te blijven. Muziek is geen wondermiddel. Het effect, met name het kalmerende effect, lijkt vaak van tijdelijke aard. De Poolse studie met renpaarden toonde aan dat de paarden na ongeveer drie maanden gewend raakten aan de muziek, en het stressverlagende effect afnam. Dit fenomeen van gewenning betekent dat je muziek strategisch moet inzetten. Bovendien, als een paard gestrest is door bijvoorbeeld eenzaamheid of pijn, zal muziek de onderliggende oorzaak niet wegnemen. Het aanpakken van de kern van het probleem blijft altijd prioriteit nummer één. Muziek kan ondersteunend werken, maar vervangt nooit goed management en aandacht voor het welzijn van je paard. Muziek als Praktisch Hulpmiddel in de Training Naast het beïnvloeden van de gemoedstoestand, kan muziek ook een actieve rol spelen in de training zelf. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het wennen aan prikkels. De stamvaders van onze eigen paardenrassen komen ook uit het wild, om precies te zijn van de steppes van Eurazië. Maar ook op andere plekken in de wereld vinden we wilde paardensoorten waarvan mensen soms geprobeerd hebben om ze te temmen. Helaas gaat het met veel van deze soorten slecht. Sommige organisaties proberen in gevangenschap dieren te fokken, (met soms een bedrijfslening zoals je die op qeld.com/nl/ vindt) en door die uit te zetten zo de wilde populatie uit te breiden. Maak kennis met de echte wilde paarden van de grote open vlaktes. Steppezebra De steppezebra komt voor in Zuid- en Oost-Afrika. Er zijn zes verschillende rassen, waarvan er één (de quagga, een bruin dier dat alleen strepen op de kop en hals had) is uitgestorven. Zebra’s hebben een typisch zwart-wit kleurpatroon en zijn moeilijk te temmen. Ze leven in grote kuddes die op de savannes grazen, en die vluchten voor roofdieren. Maar deze sterke en agressieve dieren kunnen zich door te schoppen zelfs tegen leeuwen verdedigen. Bergzebra Deze zebrasoort komt alleen maar voor in Namibië en Zuid-Afrika. Het verschil met de steppezebra is dat ze in kleine groepjes van maar een paar dieren leven. De bergzebra vinden we in de halfwoestijn en woestijn. Er zijn helaas nog maar weinig van deze bijzondere diersoort over. Grévyzebra Deze paardensoort heeft de typische zwart-witte strepen van andere zebra’s, maar het lichaam van het dier lijkt veel meer op dat van een ezel. De grévyzebra komt alleen nog maar voor in Kenia en Ethiopië. Kian Dit is een wild paard dat nog in vrije grote aantallen voorkomt in de hooglanden van Tibet en China. De kian heeft een aantrekkelijke lichtbruine rug met een crèmekleurige buik en een typische donkere streep op de rug. Qua uiterlijk lijkt dit dier nog het meest op een muilezel. Onager De onager is een wilde ezelsoort die vroeger in een heel groot gebied (van Arabië tot China) voorkwam. Tegenwoordig is het leefgebied van deze soort enorm geslonken en vinden we hem alleen nog in Mongolië. De onager kan overleven op de meest ruige vegetatie. Wilde ezel De stamvader van onze ezel leeft in bergachtige woestijnen in Noord-Afrika. Dit dier heeft de typische grijze ezel kleur, en ook een paar zwarte strepen op zijn witte poten. Ezels zijn beter dan paarden in staat om van schamel voedsel te leven en zonder water te overleven. Deze soort is ernstig bedreigd, onder andere omdat hij moet concurreren met kuddes vee. Przewalskipaard Het Przewalskipaard is de nauwste verwant van onze tamme paarden, maar niet de voorouder daarvan. Dit vrij stevige paard heeft een groot hoofd en leeft tegenwoordig alleen nog in specifieke gebieden in Mongolië. Daardoor is er een flink verschil tussen de paardenrassen ontstaan. Van een kleine Shetlandpony tot een vurige Arabische volbloed – elk paardenras heeft het lichaam dat bij de taak past waarvoor de mens hem gefokt heeft. Bij geen enkel paard is dat zo zichtbaar als bij de verschillende rassen trekpaarden. Deze rassen zijn eeuwenlang gekweekt gefokt om een groot formaat en een zware spiermassa te krijgen. Niet alleen dat, ook het karakter van de verschillende trekpaarden is afgestemd op hun werk: het trekken van zware lasten, ploegen en karren. Trekpaarden zijn namelijk erg gehoorzaam en kunnen lang zonder morren aan het werk worden gezet. Welke rassen trekpaarden zijn er? Hier vind je de vijf belangrijkste groepen. Ardens-Vlaamse trekpaard Deze Belgische rassen zijn ontstaan in de 19e eeuw. Ze werden gebruikt voor de landbouw, en in de oorlog voor het trekken van kanonnen en karren. De paarden in de Ardennen moesten kunnen werken in heuvelachtig terrein en in de winter onder zware, koude omstandigheden. Dat maakt de Belgische trekpaarden tot een paar van de taaiste ter wereld. [Read more...] The post 大学アメリカンフットボールでのテーピング first appeared on MyDiary.]]> 大学時代、マネージャーとしてアメリカンフットボール部に所属していたので、日々選手のテーピングをしていました。 アメリカンフットボールといえば走るだけではなく、タックルで全身をぶつけ合うスポーツですので怪我は日常茶飯事です。 主に足首の捻挫、手指の突き指や、肩の固定が主でした。多少の怪我でも出場しなければいけない場合の応急処置や固定のみならず、怪我の予防としてもテーピングは重要なものです。 そのため私の所属していたチームでは、日常の練習は怪我後の固定やサポート、保護のためにテーピングをする選手が多かったですが、試合当日は、怪我の有無にかかわらず選手全員が足首にテーピングをしていました。 テーピングの技術も巻き方のバリエーションもさることながら一言でテーピングといっても巻く強さは人それぞれ力加減が違いますから、足首の固定にしても、がっちり固定して安定している方がいいのか、走るポジション、キッカーなどは、ある程度の可動域を残しておく方がいいのか、一人で複数の選手のテーピングを巻く時にはそこを見極めるのが難しいところでもあります。 ですので、選手としても相性があるようで、大体は同じ選手を担当するようになってきます。(中にはこのマネージャーに巻いてもらった時は試合に勝つ、調子がいいなどのジンクス的なものを気にする選手もいましたが…) 自分たちがテーピングを教わったのは代々、コーチや先輩からでしたので、今思えば、プロのトレーナーの方から教えていただけるような、テーピング講習会のようなものに参加する機会があれば、もっと極めることができたかなあと思います。 The post 大学アメリカンフットボールでのテーピング first appeared on MyDiary.]]> 着物の着方で職業がわかる?! /?p=517 Sun, 10 Jun 2018 02:30:32 +0000 着物の着方次第で若くも老けても見えるってご存知でしょうか? 着物はただ正しく着ればいいんじゃないんです! ご自分が出したい雰囲気や、ご自身のキャラクター、年齢などに合わせた着方というのがかなり重要になって参ります。 夜の ... [Read more...] The post 着物の着方で職業がわかる?! first appeared on MyDiary.]]> 着物の着方次第で若くも老けても見えるってご存知でしょうか? 着物はただ正しく着ればいいんじゃないんです! ご自分が出したい雰囲気や、ご自身のキャラクター、年齢などに合わせた着方というのがかなり重要になって参ります。 夜の銀座や、新橋などなど夜の街では着物姿の女性を目にすることもあるのではないでしょうか。 その際、「あ?うなじが色っぽいな?」と思ったことはありませんか? そうなんです!彼女たちは敢えてそういう風な着物の着方をしているのです。 もちろん、選ぶ着物の柄行きや髪型、お化粧なども雰囲気を作る重要なアイテムではあるのですが、お着物でお仕事なさっている方は必ずといっていいほどその着方でその職業がわかってしまうほど、着方が大きなポイントとなっているのです。 着物を着る時、一番にキャラクターが出やすいのが「衿(えり)」です。 着物を着る際にはよく「もうちょっと衿を抜いて!」「もう少し衿を詰めて!」なんていう言葉をよく耳に致します。 「抜く」「詰める」といいますのは、衿の加減のことなのですが、抜くといってもただたんに衿元をガバっと広く開ければいいかというと全くそうではありません。 背中側の衿を少々後ろに引き、うなじから背中のラインが少し見えるかな?というくらいが一番美しい「抜き」かと思います。 また、夜のお仕事の女性たちはもう少し広めに背中を開けることにより、よりセクシーさを出しています。 ですが、その時に前側の衿から鎖骨が見えるようなことはなく、前側はなるべく閉じています。 そうすることにより品のある衿元が完成致します。 よく成人式などに現れる「花魁風」の方々はかなり前も後ろも露出しすぎなのですが、本来花魁というものは寧ろ隠す美学というか簡単には脱げないように沢山の着物を着込んでいた為、あのような着方はあり得ないのではありますが・・・ と話が逸れまして申し訳ありません。 兎にも角にも、着物の露出というのは「チラリズム」の文化の象徴だと私は感じております。 その話はさておき、普段に私どもが着物を着てお出かけする際はなるべくうなじ?背中のラインを広く開けてしまうと逆にだらしがないといった印象になってしまいがちなのでやめておいたほうが無難です。 ですが、詰めすぎてしまって首元がぴっちりと閉じてしまうと、それはそれで少し田舎くさいといいましょうか・・・いわゆるお洒落ではなく見えてしまいます。 そこら辺の抜き具合、さじ加減がわかるようになってくるとお洒落に着物が着こなせるようになるでしょう。 普段の場合は「抜きすぎず、かといって詰めすぎない。うなじから背骨の上から3番目がギリギリ見えるか見えないか程度」と思って頂ければ良いかと思います。 あと前の合わせ方は好みもありますが、広めのV字のほうが粋な印象に、狭めのV字だと知的で真面目な印象になります。 そちらはお好みに合わせて着付けてみてください。 お洋服と一緒で、着物も着こなし方によって人の印象を変えます! そんな印象の変化も楽しみながら素敵な着物ライフをおくってくださいね。The post 着物の着方で職業がわかる?! first appeared on MyDiary.]]> 子どもの幼稚園で、延長保育をしてもらいました /?p=481 Tue, 27 Feb 2018 00:13:48 +0000 ちょっと遠くの家で友達と会う約束があったため、幼稚園に通っている子どもの延長保育を頼みました。 早めに帰宅するつもりではいたのですが、延長にしておいた方が時間的に余裕があり安心だったからです。 今まで数回延長をしたことが ... [Read more...] The post 子どもの幼稚園で、延長保育をしてもらいました first appeared on MyDiary.]]> ちょっと遠くの家で友達と会う約束があったため、幼稚園に通っている子どもの延長保育を頼みました。 早めに帰宅するつもりではいたのですが、延長にしておいた方が時間的に余裕があり安心だったからです。 今まで数回延長をしたことがあったのですが、延長保育を頼むとおやつがもらって食べられるため、子どもは嬉しいようです。 今回も延長にしたよ~と子どもに伝えたらすごく嬉しそうでした。 前日から少し咳が出ていたので、延長していいものかどうか気になっていました。 朝のバスのお迎えの時に、先生に「今日延長ですが、咳が出ているので様子を見てひどいようなら連絡をいただきたいです」と伝えました。 担任の先生に伝えてくださるとのことで、もしかしたら電話があるかもと心構えをしていましたが、連絡は来ず、予定通り友達の家に行くことができました。 16時頃、子どもを迎えに幼稚園に行ったら、おやつを食べた後で、塗り絵をするところだったそうです。 子どもはもう少しいたかったような感じでした。 担当してくれていた先生に、子どもの様子を聞いていたら、担任の先生も来てくれて、園での様子を教えてくださいました。 昨日の方が咳は出ていて、今日は時々せき込んでいましたとのことでした。 給食も全部食べられて元気もあるようだったので、安心しました。 先生は、多くの園児を見る中で、ちゃんと我が子の子とも気に掛けてみてくれていてありがたかったです。 おやつの前に熱も測ってくれたようで、普段より少しだけ高かったですが、全然問題ない範囲でした。 下の子が寝ていたので、抱っこしたまま迎えに行き、子どもの荷物の水筒と帽子を持っていましたが、先生が「お母さん大変だから自分で持とうか」と言って、子どもに水筒を掛けてくれて、帽子もかぶせてくれました。 先生、優しい。 先生って本当にすごいなと思いました。 子どものことや親のことまで気を配って対応してくださって、嬉しかったです。 良い幼稚園に行けているなと思いました。 The post 子どもの幼稚園で、延長保育をしてもらいました first appeared on MyDiary.]]> 無農薬米でお米の美味しさを改めて感じてみよう /?p=479 Mon, 19 Feb 2018 00:11:46 +0000 ご飯派の人の中には、お米の炊き方やお米自体にこだわる人もいます。 美味しく炊けばたくほど、お米に艶が出てきて1粒ピンと立って見えるほどの輝きがあるだけではなく、口に入れて何回が噛むほど甘さを感じます。 お米を炊くときにこ ... [Read more...] The post 無農薬米でお米の美味しさを改めて感じてみよう first appeared on MyDiary.]]> ご飯派の人の中には、お米の炊き方やお米自体にこだわる人もいます。 美味しく炊けばたくほど、お米に艶が出てきて1粒ピンと立って見えるほどの輝きがあるだけではなく、口に入れて何回が噛むほど甘さを感じます。 お米を炊くときにこだわるだけでも味に違いが出てくることもありますが、同じくらいに良質のお米を選ぶことでシンプルなおかずでも十分に満足することができます。 最近ではネット通販でも取り扱っていることから、自分の足でスーパーやお米屋さんに行かなくても購入することができる時代になってきました。 しかしお米にこだわっているのなら、プロの目利きでもあるお米屋さんにまで行って、自分の好みに合わせたものを選んでもらい、食べながら口に合うお米を探すのも楽しいです。 健康のことを考慮しますと白米よりも玄米の方が良いとされていますが、個人的には玄米はたまに食べるのが丁度良く、途中で切り替えても小さいころから食べなれている白米の方を最後には選んでしまいます。 ただ年齢が上がって、40代過ぎてしまいますと1回に食べるお米の分量も減ってきて、量よりも質の良さが決め手となってしまい、最近では無農薬米を購入して食べています。 銘柄は食べなれていることもありコシヒカリを選んでいますが他の銘柄も多く、銘柄のこだわりがなければ地方で生産している農家さんがネット通販で販売していますので、試しに注文して食べてみることで好みの無農薬米に出会うこともできます。 炊く前にお米を洗う際によくゴシゴシとお米をとぐことがありますが、力強くやりますとお米同士の摩擦によって欠けてしまいますので、優しく撫でるような感じでお米を洗い、少し色が白っぽくても美味しく炊けますので、神経質に何度も洗わなくても大丈夫です。 無農薬米の場合は、季節によってお水の吸収時間が異なり、夏場は20~30分位置いた後に炊き始めても良いですが、冬は水が冷たいことから1時間以上置いた後に炊くことがおススメです。 炊飯器でも十分美味しく炊くことができますが、時間に余裕があれば1度土鍋で炊いてみますとお米の美味しさが分かりますので、美味しい無農薬米を食べてみて自然の恵みを感じてみましょう。The post 無農薬米でお米の美味しさを改めて感じてみよう first appeared on MyDiary.]]> 未就園児の教室に行ってきました。 /?p=474 Thu, 21 Dec 2017 07:44:02 +0000 子どもが通っている幼稚園では、未就園児の教室があります。 2歳~3歳の子が通うことができて、工作や運動あそび、手遊びなどいろいろやってくれます。 上の子も通っていましたが、今は下の子が通い始めたところです。 この教室に入 ... [Read more...] The post 未就園児の教室に行ってきました。 first appeared on MyDiary.]]> 子どもが通っている幼稚園では、未就園児の教室があります。 2歳~3歳の子が通うことができて、工作や運動あそび、手遊びなどいろいろやってくれます。 上の子も通っていましたが、今は下の子が通い始めたところです。 この教室に入っていると、優先的に幼稚園に入園できるというのも魅力的です。 我が家は、別の市から引っ越しをしてきて、なにもかもが手探りで、たまたまその教室を見つけたのでとりあえず申し込もうということで申し込んだのがきっかけでした。 でも、最終的にそこの幼稚園に入園したいなと思っていて、優先的に入れるというのも後から聞いてラッキーだと思いました。 入園願書受付が始まるとき、先着順の幼稚園は、前日から並んだりすると聞いたことがあったので、ドキドキしていたのです。 教室に通っていてそんなドキドキもなく、安心して入ることができたのでよかったです。 下の子にとっては今回が3回目となる教室でした。 上の子の時には抱っこで通っていたので、先生の顔も少しは覚えていたようで、先生にはとても慣れています。 まだ少し私と離れるのに戸惑いがある感じはしますが、すんなりと馴染んでくれたように思います。 ちょうど、仲のいい友達と一緒に通えることになったので心強いです。 子ども同士も面識はあるので、あ!お友達いた!という感じで遊んでいます。 今回は、パネルシアターと言うことで、先生がいろんな仕掛けがしてある手作りエプロンで赤ずきんちゃんの話をやってくれました。 すごく上手に作ってあってすごいなと思いました。 子どもたちはみんな静かに真剣に話しを聞くことができて、先生すごく褒めていました。 我が子は、子どもたちが集まるところに行ったのですが、私も近くに来てという感じだったので、私も近くで見ていました。 知っている内容だったので、分かりやすくておもしろかったようです。 最後におやつの時間があります。 みんなで列になり、電車ごっこをしながら手洗い場までいきました。 うちの子もちゃんと中に入ってやっていたのでホッとしました。 次回が楽しみです。 The post 未就園児の教室に行ってきました。 first appeared on MyDiary.]]>

After moving to Australia, I quickly got a job teaching at OneSchool Global in Brisbane. I am now teaching Design Technology from Yr 3-11. It's a different experience to teaching overseas.&nbsp;</p><p>After settling in during my first weeks, I soon realized that I needed to up skill myself in woodworking. The school has a wood working room, full of equipment that I hadn't used before. I did try completing a safety program online, but I soon realized that I needed to attend some classes in person to learn about how to construct with wood. In my previous school in Jakarta, I ran a Maker Space. The room had a lot of specialized equipment, but only hand tools for working with wood. I had access to a wonderful laser cutter - a Glowforge, but I still had too little experience in working with wood beyond plywood boards.&nbsp;</p><p>In my second term of teaching, I was really excited to teach a unit all about up-cycling. This involved taking something old and renovating it to increase its value. I chose to work on a project of my own at school to gain a better understanding of the time, skills and equipment required. I had observed that my students really like PBL - Project Based Learning and having some choice around what to make. I started with a chair and brought it into school to use a provocation.&nbsp;</p><p>The chair did spark a little conversation but my students were not very interested in it.&nbsp;</p><p></p><blockquote><p>How could I get their interest?&nbsp;</p><p>How could I show that I am a learner too?</p><p>How could I inspire students to develop the Maker's mindset?</p></blockquote><p></p><p>My shipping had just arrived from Jakarta and with it was my 30 year old guitar. It was the perfect choice! My students are very musical and there are a lot of small music bands in the school. I chose to up-cycle this old Yamaha and along the way demonstrate the Design cycle and share my process as a learner.&nbsp;</p><p>How could up-cycling a guitar teach me about working with wood? Through my research, I soon realized that I would have to remove the strings and tuners and completely sand back the whole guitar (except for the fretboard). Through my research into guitar making, I found a Luthier (guitar maker) in Brisbane. Long story short, I went to visit that workshop on a weekend and decided to learn to make a guitar myself from wood. Traditionally, the yearbook was coordinated by a group of teachers and the layouts were produced by an organisation outside of the school. The book itself was a traditional heavy hardbound paper format that featured school events and those formal galleries of student photos in passport-style format. Given that our learning this year has been online, it was a logical choice to create an online digital yearbook.&nbsp;</p><p>I chose to use online Book Creator as this app is widely used by our students, can be accessed via any device and importantly can accomodate a wide range of multimedia. I also really wanted to make this yearbook more environmentally friendly. There are cupboards full of old yearbooks at school which will probably never be used. Using Book Creator online had meant that our whole school community has easy access to the book and all those school event highlight videos could be included directly in the book.&nbsp;</p><p>My process began by pitching layout ideas first to our school management and then later to all teachers at a weekly staff meeting. The biggest challenge was finding enough good quality photos of students engaged in their learning. This was because we had been learning online this year due to the pandemic. Photos taken via Zoom were not clear enough we needed help from our parents to send in photos of learning in action. It was a mammoth task to make sure that every child from Early Years to our eldest grade level was well represented.</p><p>I was keen to break away from the traditional headshot passport photo galleries that were a feature of every yearbook in the past. I have always found them to be too formal and they don't capture the personality of the individual.&nbsp; I started by creating a collection of ideas in which classes could be collaged together with fun themes for each grade level. Some examples of these were garden scapes, superheroes, a rainy day and 'What's your passion?'. As we had been transitioning into blended learning, I was able to photograph some students who attended school social pods using a green screen and the students who weren't able to come to campus sent in a head-to-toe photograph in front of a plain background.&nbsp;Each of these photos had the backgrounds removed so they could be layered together as a class.</p><p><a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="239" src="; width="179" /></a><a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="577" data-original-width="433" height="235" src="; width="176" /></a>&nbsp;</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We decided to keep masks on for these class photos to capture this unique school year. My school is investigating ways to use VR in teaching. I knew that I needed to get my own device so that I could really take the time needed to learn about VR.</p><p>It's always been my habit when using new tech, to find a way that is meaningful for me personally so that I can really see what the possibilities are. I soon learned from the free sample apps on Oculus that there is a whole world of VR fitness. I started to watch Youtube videos about different apps and decided to start with Beat Saber.&nbsp;</p><p>The game took my interest straight away. You get two lightsabers to slash flying blocks in the direction of the arrows on them. The larger your movement, the higher the score will be. It's a rhythm game and it's great to move and slash in time with the music.&nbsp; Watching Youtube I soon learned that there is a way to add songs via a program called BeastSaber. This online community hosts a huge collection of popular songs created by users for playing with Beat Saber. After a bit of working out (and watching a few tutorials) I learned how to set up my Developer account with Oculus, enable that mode on my Oculus app on my iPhone and then add songs via <a href="; target="_blank">SideQuest and BMBF</a>. The difference in gameplay was huge because now I could choose from hundreds of songs, and many already rated by the Beast Saber community.&nbsp;</p><p>Now, I'm not saying here that fitness in VR is something that will be used at school but, who knows right? I see this as a way for me to learn how to use the Oculus and I might even improve my own fitness in the process.&nbsp;</p><p>Soooo, I played about 14 games today in Beat Saber and it gave me enough exercise on my Apple watch to close the green exercise ring. What a plus! You might be reading this blog and wondering what's this got to do the education? Everything! I have always learned new tech by playing with it. Learning whilst in 'play mode' helps me to make connections that I might not get if I am too focussed on conquering the new tool.&nbsp;</p><p>Here's a video of one YouTuber playing Beat Saber. The problem with many sites is unwanted ads or that users often are required to sign up. I have been playing with the idea of collaborative puzzles so that students can work together whilst practicing using a trackpad. Using Google Slides makes it easy to share and control how many users are in each puzzle. There are no ads and I can check which students are working on what puzzle as their Google accounts will show me who is in which slide deck. And it's fun!</p><p>I thought that solving a jigsaw would give some practice in clicking and dragging the puzzle pieces whilst being careful not to resize them. I can also teach the students <b>command-z</b> which is <b>undo </b>on a Mac.&nbsp;</p><h2 style="text-align: left;">How to make the Puzzle</h2><p>Start by opening a new Slide doc from Google Drive and creating the image that you wish to use for the puzzle. I introduced Slides and led the participants through how to make a simple layout with layered photos in Slides.&nbsp;</p><p>I wanted to keep things very simple so we stayed completely within the app and used the Google Image Search that is inside. I taught the participants how to add .png to a photo search to get vector images with transparent backgrounds.&nbsp;</p><p>The task I set was to make a lesson that used photos and instructions. The participants were so keen that the workshop went on for 2 hours.&nbsp;</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1044" data-original-width="2048" src="; width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For the follow-up workshop, I taught the participants to create a virtual reading room. I published these stories almost 8 years ago. They were written as a part of the backpack project that I did back in 2012 in a small village in North Sumatra. I worked with the children in that village to write every day stories about their life.&nbsp;</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">There was a lot of discussion about these books and I hope that I inspired these teachers to try publishing stories of their own. We had an amazing time creating a sharing about our JIS Elementary Personal Learning Program. It's a MakerEd program which is very PBL in nature and blends Apple technology with hands-on learning. Our message for this online event was all about how parents and schools can develop children's passions and creativity. The program ran via live streaming on YouTube (Festival Hari Anak Live - Hari Ketiga - YouTube ) for a couple of hours and included a making tutorial, tips for parents, and a live talk show all about fostering passions. I have been wanting to update this blog with my thoughts as to how the process is going. I am aiming to publish a more comprehensive guide on this by the end of this current academic year. Until that time, I am working with teachers to further develop the program. This is a work in process but I am starting the realise that it will always be in a constant stage of development.<br /> <br /> In the past I have published a few books on particular projects that I have done with students. I have always waited until the finish to write the book. For this book however, I am realising that it may never be finished and that I need to move forward with it as it is.<br /> <br /> The personal learning program at JIS has come a long way. Initially it was launched with help from a consultant on inquiry, Kath Murdoch. In the beginning, each homeroom teacher conducted the personal learning in their own classroom. Personal learning meant that each student pitched a proposal for a project idea and then spent the next 6 sessions to work on it. Each project was different. It was very hectic and the students mostly did research projects resulting in a slideshow or a document about what they had learned. There wasn't a lot of projects that involved hands-on making. I believe that this was mostly because managing so many different projects was too overwhelming for the homeroom teacher and there was a lack of resources and a lack of understanding of how to developing making skills.<br /> <br /> I saw an opportunity to help. I love to make, it's what I do in my downtime. I am constantly teaching myself new skills and almost all of my teachers are virtual. I am constantly developing my own Maker Mindset. It's hard, it really is! I fail a lot. I get frustrated a lot. In my role I am continually learning from virtual teachers and in many cases learning on my own through trial and error. This is an important skill for students to develop.<br /> <br /> I work with Apple devices either an iPad, a MacBook or my iPhone. It's my comfort zone. I use a range of apps to help me design and figure out my projects. I am constantly working between digital and analog. It helps me to see. I use the design cycle of Investigate, Design, Create and Evaluate. Using my devices allows me to work within each part of the design cycle.<br /> <br /> Making with your hands is so much harder that just writing about it. It requires skills, knowledge and risk taking as a learner. The Maker Mindset is all about trying to make something even when you don't know if it will work. That's the hardest part.<br /> <br /> I began with a simple idea. I wanted to share how I learn with students. Just that. I felt that I could be the bridge and support students and teachers to enable more hands on learning. I started to work with some classes. I did this by making my own learning more visible.<br /> <blockquote class="tr_bq"> "You only know what you know and you don't know what you don't know."</blockquote> I love to say this. Helping teachers and students to work outside of their comfort zone is how I help them to develop learning dispositions. We have four learning dispositions at JIS. They are, reflective, resourceful, resilient and relating. Helping students to develop the Maker Mindset creates opportunities to develop these dispositions. Using the Split Screen (what I am doing/what I am learning) to be mindful of learning really helps students.<br /> <br /> Again - it's hard and requires a lot of energy. I have a lot to think about on this. Perhaps this post can be the start of it?<br /> <br /> I think that this is a book waiting for me to write. I need input though. My son John Tambunan was indeed the first child in the world to publish a book with the Book Creator app to the Apple iBooks Store. His book is called '<a href="; target="_blank">Little Fish</a>'.<br /> <br /> Imagine my excitement when Book Creator online become developed! To be able to use iPads (or MacBooks) to create online books which can be seen and edited by teachers on their own device is so powerful. I started using this app last year in the Makerspace. It is easy to use and has been a great way for students to document their learning in real time. I have hundreds of iTime journals to manage and this tool has made that process much more efficient. It is easy to see the books and you can see all of the ones that have already been published to Seesaw - by the little globe icon. It is now in storage on a farm in Consort, Alberta with plans to try again next year. Next year we will use larger crews at all times- this way we can get the scow off rocks when it is stuck on one. We will also explore some system (inflatable?) to lift the scow off rocks. Thin steel on the bottom will no doubt help slide over protruding rocks. Also considering bringing a support boat with a powerful motor for towing us off rocks when needed, taking crews off of the scow to field areas where the scow cannot stop, and scouting in advance for rocks, areas to stop scow, etc. Of historical interest is that where the scow beached is the site of the Charles H. Sternberg (and sons Charles M. and Levi) fieldcamp of 1912.<br /><br />Philip J. Currie and Eva Koppelhus submitted this paragraph about their trip down the river today:<br /><br />The final day of the incredible voyage began as the scow was pushed off its muddy dock at 7:15 AM. As on the previous day, Al Rasmuson and Bill Spencer tended the front tiller, while Tom and Phil took care of the back end. This was probably the most stunning day visually, as kilometers of badlands slipped by. Everyone wanted to stop and look for fossils, but we all knew we had a deadline to dock in Drumheller. Most of the day passed uneventfully, but the wind became stronger by afternoon. It pushed the scow into the rocky left bank as we passed through some otherwise moderate rapids upstream of Nacmine. Undamaged, the vessel twisted 360 degrees through the fast waters, and continued downstream. Half an hour later, however, it ground to a stop on another gravel bar. Even with the water levels so high on the river, it took a little time to push it back into the deeper waters downstream. Some of the staff of the Tyrrell Museum came down to cheer us on as we passed the vicinity of the museum, and again as we passed the train tressle near the west end of Drumheller. The trip was almost over, and in spite of fighting the wind as it pushed the scow back and forth across the channel, it had been a fairly easy day. As we approached Newcastle Beach, Phil and Eva remembered the rapids at the foot of 12 Street, close to their former home in Drumheller. Everyone was up for one last fight to get through, but we found the channel by the right bank and slipped through without any problems. As planned, the scow pulled into shore at 3:45, some thirty kilometers after departing the Morrin Bridge campground. There were many hands to assist us to unpack; and a truck with a crane from Dan's Oilfield Services was there to lift the scow out of the water. Lawrence Dohy (DRI) drove Al and Bill back to Calgary, while Tom and Tess dropped Eva and Phil off at their field camp in Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park. It stopped for the night less than a kilometer upstream from where the American Museum of Natural History scow "Mary Jane" (used 1910-1912) was beached and abandoned after the 1912 field season.<br /><br />Phil Currie and Eva Koppelhus submitted these comments for today's trip:<br /><br />On Tuesday, July 6, 2010, the scow easily slid off the mud into the current of the Red Deer at 9:15 AM. Eva, Tom and Phil were still on board, but had been joined by Allan Rasmuson (Dinosaur Research Institute) and Bill Spencer (DRI as well) both from Calgary, and Tom's daughter Tess Owen from Edmonton. The wind cooperated, pushing steadily from behind, as the scow covered more than 40 kilometres at a blistering average speed of 4.2 km per hour. For a change, the great blue herons outnumbered the pelicans, and a mature bald eagle crossed our bow late in the afternoon. All would have been fine if Tom and Phil had not commented independently that the trip had been so smooth that nobody had got wet and muddy. Sure enough, shortly after, the scow ground to a halt on a gravel bar that spanned the river and connected two islands with each other and both banks. Lightened by the weight of three of the men, it was a relatively easy task to push the multi-ton vessel across the crest of the bar and back into the current. As planned, the expedition arrived more or less on time at 7 PM at the Morrin Bridge campground to meet Darren and Patty for Bar-B-Qued steaks and as assortment of side dishes. I have been dizzy for several weeks and quite stressed out during the trip. This morning I was hiking to a higher spot in order to update this blog when I felt my health declining rapidly. I was alone in the badlands and staggering along like a drunken man, with my head very dizzy and not thinking properly. I saw some vehicles heading for the day use area in the Dry Island Park, and knowing I needed medical help, headed that way. I approached a group of hikers getting ready to set out. As I reached the first person, I gather I collapsed into some tall grass. Don't remember much after that, but it resulted in an ambulance being called and me being rushed to the Three Hills Hospital. This effectively ended my involvement in the scow trip and shortened it considerably. Blood tests revealed low potassium levels and low hemoglobin so I was anemic. That and the stress and exhaustion of the trip combined to bring me down. We floated down to Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park and then Philip Currie and I guided the scow onto the exact spot where Barnum Brown had his scow anchored in 1910. We had to dodge a few rocks as we landed and then of all things- a submerged shopping cart! After landing we set up a canvas tent on the site of Brown's camp in 1910, then Patty and I donned period clothes for some historical re-enactment pictures- I will post some of them later. We had a number of visitors including the scows carpenter Perry and his wife Alice. The pictures and video clip here were taken on the exact spot of Barnum Browns scow camp in 1910- an idyllic scene and satisfying after all the work to get here. We will be going to Dry Island Buffalo Jump Provincial Park over the next two days. Mosquitoes dreadful here. Lucky for us, several young men jumped into the river and after much effort got us going again! We had Perry come and fix the scow best he could until thundershowers intervened. After the repairs were done we went to leave and discovered we were high centered on a big rock- no amount of pushing would help. We could spin the scow around, but not off the rock. Hours of work and we gained 6 inches. That rock, and our obvious inexperience on this faster stretch of river (leading to the previous accidents) forces me to pull the scow out and move it downstream to a section of river with no big rocks and a gentler gradient and more placid water. I feel it is simply too dangerous for us rookies to attempt it alone. It looks easy when you look at the river but once you are on it it is a different story. Later today, Dan's Oilfield Service and others will come to our rescue and drag us up the bank or lift us out of the river and take us downstream to Content Bridge where highway 21 crosses the Red Deer River. We got away OK at 3:15 yesterday, but only a couple kilometres downstream hit a bridge piling side on. Some smashed drinking glasses and ceramic mixing bowls were the only minor damage in the kitchen. One of the tiller support blocks was smashed but usable, I was able to nail it back together. After that a leaning tree tried to swipe the tent off the scow. A collision with the bank shattered the tiller block again, and snapped a tiller clean in two. We then had a rough landing in which Patty fell and badly sliced her left index finger open which resulted in an ambulance trip to the Red Deer Hospital. A nasty thunderstorm ensued and we heard of a tornado in the area. We camped on some flat land right above where we stopped, the river now a raging torrent. We only made 12 kilometers yesterday. Perry is on his way to do some repairs. Travelling by scow is very challenging as we are discovering the hard way. In places it is swift (10 km/hr.) with shallow rapids, but placid for the most part so far. We hope to continue on again later today (10 am on the 30th as I write this). Now we pack and realize we have 5 of some things, 3 of others. This is what happens when you go to flea markets and antique shops over 8 years accumulating tools and equipment for this project! The tent maker put the stove pipe opening on the wrong side which has necessitated a rethinking of how things will be arranged inside the scow tent. This "how to arrange things" was a thought process a year ago. To resolve this, Perry made a simple scale scow base atop of which a piece of plywood represents the tent (now 1 foot narrower than seen here), and then small blocks of wood correctly cut to scale and here identified as to bed, desk, table, etc. All 1:10 scale if I recall correctly. By moving these blocks around, one can explore the best configuration of things- obviously the stove should be kept away from the upright ice chest. For scale, the red upright rectangle represents your blogger, Darren Tanke, in height and width across the shoulders. Actual departure time is uncertain. The plan is to lift the scow onto a big truck from Dan's Oilfield Service with help from Cliff's Oilfield Hauling (both in Drumheller) on the afternoon of June 28th. The truck and scow will then be driven to Drumheller and stored in their trucking yard overnight. On the morning of June 29th, the truck/scow and several support vehicles will leave Drumheller. We will arrive in Red Deer mid to late morning. In Red Deer, the truck will proceed southward down Fountain Drive to the Red Deer River. The scow will be put into the water, and tied to shore. Then there will be at least 1-2 hours of rebuilding and attaching the scows infrastructure, loading it with supplies, putting the tent on, etc. Actual departure time is unknown, but we should be gone no later than 3 pm- I personally would like to be gone no later than 2 pm. Anyone living in or near Red Deer would likely see us there at noon.<br /><br />To see where this will all happen, go to Google Maps and search "Fountain Drive Red Deer, AB". They are 7 feet (2.13 metres) square at the base and 7 feet (2.13 metres) high. Four tent pegs and a single upright wooden pole are all that are needed to set them up so they go up quick and easy. This design is based on pictures of c. 1912 American Museum of Natural History crew tents. Set them up on my front lawn today to air them out and to make sure they are finished properly and all the zippers worked. All have a zippered screen door for ventilation and to keep out biting insects.</div><div></div><div>These tents look a bit "limp" here. The premade tent poles are just a bit short so I will get some wood pieces to put underneath so the fabric goes taut. We are attempting something unfamiliar to us so there may be some technical or logisitical problems. We have an electric generator on board to charge up the laptops internal battery. We have a "turbo stick" which fits into the laptops USB port so we can upload text and digital images to this blog, via, I believe, a cell phone signal. We don't know what type of cell phone signal coverage we'll get on the trip. Cell phone companies are eager to show you widespread coverage across Alberta, but never exclude deep river valleys from their coverage maps. Some places along the river (valley bottom) have good cell phone coverage, others poor or none. My plan, if there is no coverage, is to climb up the badlands until I get a signal and post an update there. That said, be aware that there may be times I cannot do this, even if I want to. For example, maybe it is too late in the day and dark. Don't want to be hiking the rough badlands with just a flashlight! Maybe it is raining, or has been raining. When this happens, the clay in the Late Cretaceous rock swells up and the hills are very slippery. It is extremely unsafe to blog under these conditions and we will need a drying out day before an attempt can be made. I may do multiple postings on one day to "catch up" if need be.</div><div></div><div>I leave you with a nice view of the Late Cretaceous middle Horseshoe Canyon Formation a few miles upstream from the Morrin Bridge, about a 45 minute drive north of Drumheller. These rocks produce Albertosaurus (carnivorous tyrannosaur), Hypacrosaurus (crested hadrosaur), and Anchiceratops (horned dinosaur), among others. This area has no cell phone coverage so would be a typical view while posting to this blog- spectacular! Kaisen (seen here in 1912 second from the left on the scow <em>Mary Jane</em>), a paleontology technician at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) from 1898 to 1936. In 1897, he was a section boss on Union Pacific Railway working in Aurora, Wyoming, USA. At this time the AMNH was working on the now famous Como Bluff dinosaur quarry, he left the railroad and joined the AMNH crew at the Bone Cabin Quarry in the spring of 1898. He worked there constantly until the fall of 1899 when he moved to New York City. He was one of Barnum Brown's "right hand man" and worked extensively with him in the field. He was part of the scow expeditions on the Red Deer River, Alberta from 1910-1913 and also worked with Brown in 1914 in Alberta. He collected, prepared, and mounted a great many specimens for the AMNH, mostly dinosaurian and a large number of these from Alberta. He worked with Roy Chapman Andrews and the AMNH team in Mongolia in 1923. His last fieldwork was done in 1932. He died on March 18, 1936. </div><div> </div><div>Kaisen's work and legacy is largely eclipsed by that of Brown. He was a fellow technician and kept good and interesting fieldnotes (Brown wrote very few, if any) and for that reason the 2010 scow is named in honor of him, another unsung hero of vertebrate paleontology.</div><div> </div><div> I picked the nameplates for the scow tonight and show one held in place. There were even tornado warnings out. So Perry did not get much work done on the scow today. The pictures here show the scow being worked on last night. Patty took the tents, etc back to Calgary for waterproofing today and will pick them up on Friday. Because the tent chimney hole was put on the wrong side, the wood walls on one end of the tent support have to be changed around, otherwise the stove is mostly blocking one doorway. Here it can be seen that Perry is swapping the walls around. </div><div> </div><div> As I was typing this the phone rang and I was interviewed about the scow trip by the local FM station. I am also to be interviewed by another station tomorrow morning. Perry has added some short wood uprights along the sides of the scow to hold the tillers in place when not in use. It turns out the lack of waterproofing on the tent was not the tent manufacturers fault, they had bought 1,000 metres of canvas from a supplier and it was supposed to be waterproofed material which it turned out was not! They tested the unused canvas material at their shop and had the same unwanted results as us. Tomorrow Patty will take the scow tent, crew tents, and 3 tarps back to Calgary to have them properly waterproofed.<br /><br /> All this rain recently had caused some fears of flooding on the Red Deer River, but we can see now the river is dropping steadily over the past 2.5 days- we gauge this by a small island in the river and how emergent it is from the water. It was 6 inches emergent for months until about a week ago when it was completely submerged, but now several inches are showing. There have been many media reports about flooding in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan the past few days. Be assurred this is not affecting us. Those places got much more rain than here, are hundreds of kilometres to the south, and importantly, are far downstream from Red Deer/Drumheller or are on river systems not attached to the Red Deer River.2010/06/scow-construction-update-june-21-2010.html

The users are not only the local government but also prospective investors who are interested in developing the province. Due to the budget limitation, the government decided to choose free and open source software to implement the system. The application is built using PostgreSQL and PostGIS to store the data in the spatial database. The web GIS interface is developed using OpenLayers with the base map from Google Maps. The natural resource and statistical data are displayed as thematic maps and charts. Such data can be downloaded in a spreadsheet format to allow furhther use. But the complexity of coupled human and natural systems and the fourth dimension involved with change over time and time-series data expose some limitations of GIS tools when used on their own. In this paper we present the application of REPAST, a free and open source geospatial Multi-agent Model (a.k.a. Agent-based Model or ABM) to the dynamic simulation of greenhouse gas (GHG) changes in a sub-watershed in Ontario, Canada with predominantly agricultural land use. The combination of Geospatial analysis and use of an Agent Based Model is a new way to solve complex problems involving multiple decision makers on the landscape. The combination of these modeling approaches helps to address the time dimension in geospatial modeling problems. ABM can model dynamic systems, their evolutionary changes and importantly, can predict options for sustainable system configurations. As a part of this research project, open source tools were developed to integrate ABM and GIS environments, specifically with respect to data transport and coupling of GIS and REPAST tools. Patterns of species richness are determined by constituent species range sizes, spatial locations of those ranges, species associations, co-occurrence and species interactions. Analysis of these phenomena at biogeographical scales, i.e. continental to global extents, presents computational and visualization challenges. The creation of species presence/absence matrices is one approach for linking range size and richness patterns. The presence/absence matrix is a gridded data format, where columns represent species and rows represent geographic sites or localities. Each matrix element is coded for the presence (1) or absence (0) of each of hundreds or thousands of species. The presence/absence matrix allows for the interlinking of two concepts: the dispersion field, and the diversity field. The diversity field is the species diversity of all sites in which a particular species occurs. A dispersion field is the set of geographic ranges of all the species occurring in a given site. It has been demonstrated that species diversity of sites and the mean range size of species has a symmetrical relationship with the range size of species and the mean species diversity within those ranges. Null models are used with presence/absence matrices to test hypotheses requiring that large matrices be randomized while maintaining the total value of each row and column constant. By treating these matrices as Boolean grids, we developed highly-optimized swap algorithms to achieve this in a software suite of WPS web services which utilize QGIS as a client. Two different types of range diversity plots map the relationships between the mean proportional species diversity against the proportional range size of a species; and the relationship between the mean proportional range size and the proportional species diversity. These two different &lsquo;views&rsquo; of the data can then be linked for display to phylogenetic trees in the case of the species specific plot and geographic space in the case of the locality specific plot. Depending on the characteristics of the public facilities and the scale of spatial data, facilities can be treated as spatial objects of points, lines, or polygons, and the service area of each type of these spatial objects can be delineated by creating buffer areas or constructing Voronoi Diagrams. In addition, to account for forbidden barriers and regions, network analysis and network Voronoi Diagrams can be utilized. Furthermore, in order to reflect the reality more precisely, weights should be assigned to facilities of different attributes.</p> <p>This paper reviews the functionality of proprietary and FOSS GIS software in delineating service areas of facilities in an urban planning context. Identifying and selecting the cells of a specific attribute value in the GIS programming world can be done fast in a single GIS raster layer. A problem might rise when the GIS programmer attempts to select a combination of multi values in exact cell locations in multi raster layers on top of each other. The more raster layers included for search, the longer time needed to obtain results and the more space needed for storage. This paper represents an innovated methodology in GIS programming, using the MapWindow open source GIS standalone development paradigm, to improve the searching speed for a distinct composite of multi values of identical cell locations in multi raster layers.The paper explains the development evolvement through four different approaches of searching multi raster layers. Each approach is an advancement of the previous approach in terms of speed and storage capacity. A timer tool was developed to calculate the mean time of running thirteen different queries against a small multi raster dataset and a large one, using the first basic approach and the fourth fastest approach. The results of the timer tool represents a significant improvement of searching speed, approximately twelve times faster. The system originated as a fairly simple implementation of a few conformal mappings, using one of the first compilers for the Algol-60 language. But it has evolved dramatically since then and survived through a range of three programming languages (Algol, Fortran, C), and a large number of operating systems and machine architectures.</p> <p>Today, in addition to a large number of map projections, KMSTR supports a range of datum shift operations, implemented using either Molodensky transforms, high order polynomials, or NADCON style grid interpolations. KMSTR also includes support for time varying transformations based on plate tectonic motion models, for deriving the proper transformation between a global datum (e.g. ITRF89) and regional, plate fixed reference systems (such as ETRS89) at different epochs.</p> <p>Recently the extended transverse mercator implementation of KMSTR was included in proj, the leading open source projection package. This is the first step towards making KMSTR more interoperable with other open source projection and transformation packages. From a KMSTR point of view this is highly desirable, since closer relations to proj and other open source projects will facilitate maintenance and development of KMSTR, and will help keeping it in line with the state of the art in geospatial software.</p> <p>The main objective of this paper is to briefly outline the historical origins of KMSTR, and to describe the architectural design considerations behind an ongoing effort to make KMSTR ready for today&rsquo;s requirements, most notably by making it 64-bit clean and thread safe. Therefore, the user interface design for such a system is very important which should maintain the scientific model structure and also simplify the interaction with models. Meanwhile, as the decision support system can be used to evaluate the effects of different alternatives, the user interface also should have the ability to render the new scenarios as soon as possible. In this project, we developed one prototype of WebDSS system, named VisREACHER, based on several open source programs: Mapserver, Openlayers, GeoEXT and PostGIS. We put our original water quality model results into a Bayersian Network model to generate the possibilities of future scenarios and then put those possibilities outputs into the postGIS spatial database in order to link with the entire river basin&rsquo;s topology. After that, we create several vector layers to link with the database which are clickable and editable. By this structure, users can interact with the map-based user interface and input their own assumptions with quick responses. In this way of representing the models, users can get the spatial information quickly and try their own alternatives without running the original water quality model again. These FOSS programs are flexible and powerful in representing spatial information over the map layers. In this paper, Firstly, we will analysis the user requirements of our working package. Secondly, the concept design of this web-based application is given. Thirdly, the technique details are described in following section. Then, the preliminary results are represented. The remote sensing community has recognized the challenge in processing large and complex satellite datasets to derive customized products. To address this high demand in computational resources, several efforts have been made in the past few years towards incorporation of high-performance computing models in remote sensing data collection, management and analysis. This study adds an impetus to these efforts by introducing the recent advancements in distributed computing technologies, MapReduce programming paradigm, to the area of remote sensing.</p> <p>The MapReduce model which is developed by Google Inc. encapsulates the efforts of distributed computing in a highly simplified single library. This simple but powerful programming model can provide us distributed environment without having deep knowledge of parallel programming. This research presents a MapReduce based processing of large satellite images a use case scenario of edge detection methods. Deriving from the conceptual massive remote sensing image processing applications, a prototype of edge detection methods was implemented on MapReduce framework using its open-source implementation, the Apache Hadoop environment. The experiences of the implementation of the MapReduce model of Sobel, Laplacian, and Canny edge detection methods are presented. This thesis also presents the results of the evaluation the effect of parallelization using MapReduce on the quality of the output and the execution time performance tests conducted based on various performance metrics. The MapReduce algorithms were executed on a test environment on heterogeneous cluster that supports the Apache Hadoop open-source software. In this study, remote sensing techniques and Geographical Information Systems have been used successfully to monitor and quantify the sources of Nitrogen on the scale of a global watershed.</p> <p>The surface water selected for the present study is a French River &ndash;the Durance- and its surroundings, located in the South-East of France and running through Provence from the Alps to the Rhône River. The watershed area is 14 000 km2 and covers very different landscapes from high mountains to Mediterranean forests, and encounters various human activities.<br />Data have been extracted from two main databases: i) the archive database provided by the USGS which gives us open access to 25 years of Landsat-5 data, ii) A French database reporting analyses of water quality (SANDRE), available from the French Water Agency web portal, which allows us to freely access 40 years&rsquo; data.</p> <p>A supervised classification was applied on the satellite imagery to produce land use maps with a better accuracy than the Corine Landcover datas. The sub-watershed of each sampling station was computed using its geographical location and the ASTER Digital Elevation Model, this allows the calculation of land use statistics for each sub-watershed.<br />In the SANDRE database, total nitrogen is available as the sum of Kjeldahl nitrogen, ammonium, nitrates and nitrites. The concentrations of the different species of nitrogen were averaged by sampling station and year.</p> <p>Our null hypothesis is that water quality is dependent on land use. A single linear model was applied using land use statistics as an explanatory variable dependent on the concentrations of the different species of nitrogen.
