Not content with the cost of a first class letter being almost prohibitive at £1.65, it will be increasing the cost to £1.70. Fortunately, second class postage, as it is regulated, is only rising 2p from 85p to 87p. The latest rises will simply exacerbate the issue of declining mail volumes, as the more the price is raised, the less people use the post. Online services are now starting to proliferate and most major institutions now nudge their customers to dealing with them online, meaning no more paper bills in the post. The rises, whilst expected, come as another blow to those who regularly use the postal system as currently second class post can take between two and ten days to be delivered, even when the recipient is a few miles away. First class post is often delayed and Royal Mail are regularly being fined for missing their standard delivery targets. To deal with this, Royal Mail are looking to vary the conditions of the Universal Service Obligation and drop at least one of their deliveries. Whilst this is meeting with residence amongst consumer groups, it would simply be an official recognition of what has already become ‘de facto’ standard practice. Many homes simply don’t receive mail on certain days of the week and some, just on one or two specific days. At 87p, second class post still represents good value, given the cost of running a nation-wide postal system, but further rises will make the service even less appealing and the end result could well be the same as Denmark, who will officially cease all mail services in the country at the end of 2025. So, price rise or no, use it or lose it is the message for all fans of second class stamps! Today’s increase in the price of first-class stamps is the second price rise in a year, with a first-class stamp in September 2023 costing £1.10, today it has gone up to £1.65 following a shift to £1.35 in April of this year. Of course, most people these days tend to use second-class stamps if possible as they understand that adding a first-class stamp does nothing to improve its speed of delivery to certain parts of the country. As an example, sitting today in the North West of England, we’ve had no post through the door since last Thursday, meaning three days without any mail deliveries. Given that we typically get over a dozen pieces of mail every week, it’s a rock solid certainty that somewhere at our local sorting office there’s a small pile of letters waiting to be delivered. Like many other households, we understand the issue. Royal Mail have dropped or consolidated rounds (known in the trade as ‘dropping a frame’) which means that often, our pastiche cannot physically complete the whole round in a day. When post does arrive, which is likely to be tomorrow, it’s almost guaranteed that the postmarked items will have Friday’s date on them, irrespective of whether they were sent first or second class. A recent online commentator suggested that someone take Royal Mail to court under the trades description act, as their ability to deliver a letter the following day now seems in question for anyone outside of the major conurbations. Either way, the price rises today for first-class stamps to £1.65 for a standard letter and first-class large letter jumps up 50p to £2.60. When the second-class equivalents are so much cheaper it makes you wonder if first-class post in the U.K. is sustainable moving forward. In April 2024, the price of a first-class stamp went up from £1.10 to £1.35 and now, six months on they are raising the price again to £1.65. This enormous 22% increase puts 30p on the cost of a first-class letter and is driven, we are told, by “very real and urgent” financial pressures. It total it makes the rise this year 55p, which is a 33% rise in the cost of sending a letter. Whilst it makes sense to increase the price of your product or services when, as a business, you are faced with an imbalance between revenues and costs, in this instance it makes no sense. Economically, the price is not as elastic as they would like to think and this will inevitably lead to a decrease in first-class mail volumes and, ultimately, a further decline in mail volumes overall. Add to this mix the fact that the price of a basic second class letter remains at 85p and it is clear that most rational people will simply switch to the ‘slower’ service. The reality is that deliveries of second-class letters often arrive at the same time as first-class letters, or if not, then the next day. With the price of a second class stamp currently capped until 2029 it seems that Royal Mail are trying to prevent people from using their first class service. If this is the aim then it simply strengthens their claim to remove the universal obligation as letter volumes will fall even further than they currently have. Perhaps this is their strategy. This is a huge shame, as there’s nothing quite like the joy of receiving a letter and in our house, we definitely get more than the average household total of four letters a week. The good news in all this is that the price of a second-class stamp remains the same, so to make sure we don’t lose this vital service, buy stamps and use them sending people letters! Whilst this is factually correct, it omits a sneaky second-class stamp price rise which is hidden in the small print. Standard letters will still be able to be sent second class at 75p, but large letters will be increasing from £1.15 to £1.55, a whopping 34.5% rise. Funny, that wasn’t highlighted anywhere in the press release. We have all seemingly become so inured to the inevitable price rises in everything we buy that have forgotten that Royal Mail normally only raises their prices once a year, yet this is the second one in six months. In doing so, they have effectively admitted that they don’t want people to use the first-class service, by pricing it so far apart from the second-class service. No wonder, as the current first-class service is nothing of the sort and in most cases, indistinguishable from the second-class service. When there is no guarantee of next-day delivery, why would you pay almost twice to price for the service? Anywhere you look online there are stories from individuals who have missed hospital appointments, received late birthday cards, and raised disputes with online sellers for non-delivery, all because Royal Mail cannot provide the next-day delivery service promised by the first-class service. Throughout all of this, they simply point to dropping mail volumes, increased costs, and the onerous restrictions of the Universal Service Obligation. Fine, but where are the solutions? The reality is that the UK postal system is in disarray and raising stamp prices in nothing short of rearranging the deckchairs whilst the boat sinks. As Royal Mail is still effectively hamstrung by Government obligations, whilst being a privately owned business, the recipe for disaster is already in place. How long before the entire system for delivering mail reaches a crisis point and someone actually does something to sort this? The following is the result of our conversation. Question: how much is a second class postage stamp ChatGPT: I’m sorry, but I cannot provide you with real-time information as my training only goes up until 2021, and postal rates are subject to change. However, in 2021, the cost of a second class postage stamp in the UK was 66p. It is best to check with your local postal service or visit their website to find out the current price of a second class postage stamp. Question: Why do we have second class postage stamps? ChatGPT: Second class postage stamps are typically used for standard, non-urgent mail items that don’t require priority delivery. These types of mail items include letters, cards, and large envelopes that are not time-sensitive or urgent in nature. Having different classes of postage allows postal services to offer customers different levels of service at different prices. Second class mail is generally cheaper than first class mail, as it takes longer to deliver. This can be beneficial for both customers and postal services, as it allows customers to save money on postage costs for non-urgent items, while also allowing postal services to manage their delivery resources more efficiently by prioritizing first class mail. Additionally, many postal services also offer other classes of mail, such as priority or express mail, which are faster and more expensive than first class mail. This allows customers to choose the level of service that best meets their needs and budget. Question: When were second class stamps first introduced in the UK? ChatGPT:Second class postage stamps were first introduced in the United Kingdom in 1968 as part of a major overhaul of the postal system. Prior to this, there was only one class of mail, and it was simply known as “ordinary mail.” The introduction of second class mail was intended to provide a cheaper option for customers who were willing to wait a little longer for their mail to be delivered. It also helped the Royal Mail to better manage the flow of mail through the system by separating out non-urgent items from those that required faster delivery. Since then, second class mail has become an integral part of the UK postal system, with millions of items being sent via this class of mail every year. Question: Will we always need second class stamps? ChatGPT: It is difficult to predict the future of postal services and whether or not we will always need second class stamps. However, it is likely that there will continue to be a need for non-urgent mail delivery options, as there will always be items that are not time-sensitive and can be sent at a lower cost. In recent years, there has been a trend towards digital communication and a decrease in physical mail volume, which could potentially impact the need for second class stamps in the future. However, many people still rely on traditional mail services for important communications and deliveries, and there will likely always be a need for a range of postal service options to meet the needs of different customers. Ultimately, the future of postal services and the need for different classes of mail will depend on a variety of factors, including technological advancements, changes in customer preferences, and shifts in the broader economy and society. Question: Where are some good resources for finding out more about the history of second class stamps in the UK? ChatGPT: There are several resources available for finding out more about the history of second class stamps in the UK. Here are some suggestions: The British Postal Museum & Archive – This organization is dedicated to preserving the history of the Royal Mail and has a vast collection of historical documents, photographs, and other artifacts related to the postal service. They offer a variety of resources for researchers and the general public, including online exhibitions, publications, and research services. The Royal Mail Group – The Royal Mail’s official website provides a wealth of information about the UK postal system, including the history of postage stamps and different classes of mail. They also offer resources for collectors, such as a guide to stamp collecting and information about upcoming stamp releases. Philatelic Societies – There are many philatelic societies in the UK that focus on stamp collecting and postal history. These societies often have extensive collections of stamps, as well as resources for researchers and enthusiasts. Some popular societies include the Royal Philatelic Society London, the British Society of Australian Philately, and the Great Britain Philatelic Society. Libraries and Archives – Many libraries and archives throughout the UK have collections of historical documents and publications related to the postal service. These resources can be accessed in person or online, depending on the institution. Some examples include the National Archives, the British Library, and local history museums and archives. And there you have it, our brief but informative exchange. The bottom line is that it can’t do much about being up to date on information about pricing, nor can it form an opinion on the likely future of second class stamps, but it did point me towards some decent resources at the end. So, ChatGPT isn’t the answer to everything but it could prove useful as a tool to search archives for relevant information. In a press release the company announced that following a successful national trial of barcoded stamps, (see image below) they would be rolling these out, as standard, with immediate effect. Because of this, all non-barcoded Machin stamps, along with special Christmas stamps, are going to be demonetised on 31st January 2023. GB 2nd Class barcode stamp Feb 21 The headline, picked up by the National Press, was all around the ability to track and trace post with these new stamps and, inevitably, that by scanning the barcode users can get unique videos, starting with Shaun the Sheep. What they all appear to have missed is the bigger financial story surrounding this, namely that this is a massive revenue protection grab by Royal Mail to shore up its Balance Sheet. Royal Mail has known for years that they are losing money due to people either using fake stamps or reusing stamps that have been through the post but have not been cancelled. In the case of the former, there is a steady flow of these into the UK, mainly from the Far East, where they have managed to forge the simple Machin stamps in their millions. Despite the introduction of security measures such as codes on the stamps and even on the backing paper, forgeries still flood in. What has been missed by all the reports is that these new barcode stamps stop this trade at a stroke. The second category of reuse of stamps has been an issue for many years. Currently, you can buy large quantities of these stamps on eBay for relatively little money. It’s not difficult to separate self-adhesive stamps from their backing paper and then reaffix them to a new envelope, effectively giving you free postage. Why they are uncancelled is (or at least should be) a source of embarrassment to Royal Mail. As far back as back 1840, when the Penny Black was introduced, there was a clear instruction that when the stamp was affixed on an envelope it had to be cancelled. At first, this was with a hand canceller but then later, in the early 1900s, machinery was introduced to do this automatically and to cope with the massive increase in postal volumes. It used to be that all stamps ended up cancelled once used but today, so much of the mail gets missed by the machinery that vast quantities of these stamps end up on the secondary markets. Their solution, to date, has been to issue posties with marker pens and ask them to scribble through any stamps that are uncancelled before they are delivered. Of course, this simply hasn’t worked. Which brings us to the real thrust of yesterday’s announcement. The press release from Royal Mail quotes their Chief Commercial Officer, Nick Landon as saying “Introducing unique barcodes on our postage stamps allows us to connect the physical letter with the digital world and opens up the possibilities for a range of new innovative services in future.” Whilst this may be true, what he omitted to say is that it is simply phase one of a two-part strategy to reclaim revenues and scrub out a massive unrecorded hole in their balance sheet. The problem stems from the fact that our present monarch has been on the throne for an extraordinarily long time. Queen Elizabeth II acceded to the throne in February 1952 and was crowned monarch in 1953. This makes 2022 her 70th year of service and her Platinum Jubilee. During this period, the only major change from a postal revenue point of view was decimalisation in 1970. When this happened, all stamps bearing the old pounds, shillings, and pence were demonetised and decimal values were introduced. What people don’t always realise is that decimal stamps issued in 1970 are still able to be used today as valid postage.  These stamps shown below were issued in June 1970 are all still valid for use on mail today. GB 1970’s Machin High Value Stamps (SG829-831b) What has always been an inconvenient fact for Royal Mail is that each year, they sell more stamps than are used in the post. This means that at the end of each year, there is a theoretical liability to Royal Mail from these stamps still being in existence. If, for example, they sell a million pounds worth of stamps and just half a million pounds worth are used on posting items, then the other half a million pounds is yet to be used. Of course, as stamps have no ‘use by’ date then they can safely be used whenever you like, if they are in decimal currency and have not been demonetized. And to date, Royal Mail has not demonetized any stamps since the old pre-decimal stamps in 1970. This means that they are currently carrying a theoretical liability for over 50 years of unused stamps. In practice, it’s unlikely that everyone will suddenly dig out millions of pounds worth of old stamps from collections, cupboards and drawers and use them on posting items. If they did, then RM would have to accept them and effectively not receive any revenue today for providing their service, the payment having been made in advance, many years earlier. The introduction of barcoded stamps and the subsequent demonetization of all existing Machin and Christmas stamps removes millions of pounds of liabilities from the market and from the balance sheet. Royal Mail has said they will be introducing a ‘Swap Out’ scheme allowing people with these stamps to send them in and receive new, barcoded versions in their place. The swap scheme will open on 31st March 2022 and whilst they have not publicly commented on how many they expect to receive, I’ve already seen comments from some stamp dealers suggesting that they may use this as an opportunity to offload vast stocks they hold, meaning Royal Mail will have to exchange hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of stamps. But as I say, this is simply phase one of the strategy and although it removes the biggest source of revenue loss, the forgery or reuse of Machin stamps, there remains the issue of all the other commemorative stamps issued since 1970 which are also valid for postage. Which brings us to phase two, which will happen independently of any decision Royal Mail may make. When a monarch dies, the stamps of that reign are typically still available for use during the subsequent reign, but only for a limited period. With decimalization in 1970 came the opportunity to render all previous GB stamps invalid and as such, all stamps from George VI, Edward VIII, and George V were demonetised. When our present monarch passes, the opportunity to demonetize will present itself once again and I expect this to be phase two of the plan to remove revenue liability. In fact, I forecast that unlike the transition from George VI to QEII, where the stamps of his reign were still valid for a further eighteen years, the validity period after our Queen dies will be less than five years. Of course, time will tell whether this is correct or not but given the speed of change in the postal market and the rise of digital services, the quicker Royal Mail reduces this liability the better from their point of view. So, where does this leave the humble 2nd class stamp? Well, as of yesterday there were two new stamps made available for second class services, the standard 2nd class stamp and the 2nd class large, both shown below. Royal Mail 2nd class barcoded Machin stamp 2022 Royal Mail 2nd class large barcoded Machin stamp 2022 These stamps are now available for use alongside existing 2nd class stamps and for the next year, they will be used concurrently. At the moment, the cost of a second class stamp is still 66p as we write this in February 2022, but if you look at the history of 2nd class stamp prices, you will realise that they are probably due to rise soon. Royal Mail has already announced changes to their Access General Large Letter services and Wholesale Parcels services from 4 April 2022 so don’t be surprised if we soon hear of a rise in second class postal rates. I suppose we should congratulate the team at Royal Mail for what is, frankly a masterstroke. In a very short space of time, they will be removing liabilities, stopping forgery, and hopefully, improving their ability to track where the post is at any time. Of course, if you look back, you can see that post used to be delivered same day in certain parts of the UK, all stamps were being cancelled so there was no reuse and post generally didn’t go missing. So apart from blocking the forgers, we seem to be back to where we were twenty years ago.   The post Royal Mail introduces new 2nd class stamps, but Shaun the Sheep is a welcome distraction from the real story appeared first on How much is a 2nd Class Stamp?. ]]> 2022/02/02/royal-mail-introduces-new-2nd-class-stamps-but-shaun-the-sheep-is-a-welcome-distraction-from-the-real-story/feed/ 2 What is Royal Mail’s Universal Service Obligation and why is it important? 2021/09/10/what-is-royal-mails-universal-service-obligation-and-why-is-it-important/ 2021/09/10/what-is-royal-mails-universal-service-obligation-and-why-is-it-important/#comments Fri, 10 Sep 2021 13:02:00 +0000 ?p=183 The Universal Service Obligation placed on Royal Mail is one of the most important pieces of legislation in the UK. The obligation means that it recognises Royal Mail as the designated provider of the Universal Postal Service in the UK and it means that they must provide a six-day a week, one price goes anywhere postal service to 30 million UK addresses. This obligation is overseen and monitored by Ofcom. What are the Minimum Universal Service requirements? The Postal Services Act 2011 sets out the minimum requirements the Universal Service Provider must deliver, in this case, Royal Mail. These statutory obligations can only be altered with the consent of the UK Parliament. The minimum requirements for all postal items not subject to exemption (including those whose weight does not exceed 20 kilograms or whose dimensions fall outside the minimum and maximum dimensions) are as follows: Delivery of letters or parcels (including those posted outside the UK) At least one delivery of letters every Monday to Saturday to every address in the UK. At least one delivery of other parcels every Monday to Friday to every address in the UK. Collection of letters or parcels (including those for onward transmission outside the UK) At least one collection of letters every Monday to Saturday from every access point in the UK used for receiving letters and parcels for onward transmission At least one collection of other parcels every Monday to Friday from every access point in the UK used for that purpose. Service at affordable prices at a uniform public tariff Postal services – (including conveying, receiving, collecting, sorting, and delivering) at an affordable, uniform public tariff across the UK; and to places outside the UK. A registered items service at a uniform UK-wide, affordable public tariff. An insured items service at a uniform UK-wide affordable public tariff. A free-of-charge postal service to blind or partially sighted people. Free carriage of legislative petitions and addresses. Redirection, Post restante and Retention services For the purposes of this blog, the key element we focus on is point 3, the provision of an affordable service at a uniform rate. This means that for a single price you can send a letter or parcel anywhere around the UK, with no premium added for distance. Where did the obligation start? The obligation started with the introduction of The Uniform Penny Post in 1840, an event engineered by Roland Hill (later ennobled as Sir Roland Hill) and marked by the introduction of the world’s first postage stamp, the Penny Black. It was part of Britain’s official postal service, which to this point had been fragmented and inconsistent. The reforms were meant to eradicate abuse and corruption in a new government-run initiative. With these changes, it became more accessible for British citizens because now you had to pay only one penny per letter delivered anywhere within Great Britain or Ireland no matter how far apart they are from each other. This single act is credited with doing more for the improvement of literacy across the UK than anything else. How does the obligation work in practice? As Royal Mail has an extensive network of distribution and sorting offices around the country and a reliable and well-organised logistics team, then mail can travel, quite literally, from Lands End to John O’Groats in a single day. In practice this means that two letters, posted the same day, one with a first class stamp and the other with a second class stamp, can often travel in the same mailbag from the post box to the sorting office, then from the sorting office to the distribution hub and from there onto the destination sorting office, local PO and eventually the address. And of course, this means that despite a big price difference between first class at 85p and second class at 66p*, the reality is that they receive pretty much the same treatment. How is the Universal Service Obligation measured? Royal Mail is required to publish quarterly Quality of Service reports against delivery targets set and reviewed by the postal industry regulator Ofcom. These targets are to ensure that Royal Mail continues to meet the obligations and are broken into two specific targets: First Class mail – a minimum of 93 percent delivered the next working day Second Class mail – a minimum of 98.5 percent delivered within three working days. Royal Mail naturally, therefore, has demanding quality of service standards that they must meet to deliver the Universal Service obligation of collecting and delivering mail six days a week at a uniform price across the UK. Their performance is independently measured by a market research agency, Kantar, with the methodology employed and the results obtained separately verified by auditors appointed by the regulator Ofcom. Is there a future for second class stamps? At the moment, the answer appears to be yes. It all boils down to the interpretation of point three again, “service at affordable prices at a uniform public tariff” and how this might be seen. Looking back to Rowland Hill’s original reform, it was essential to make letter writing and sending inexpensive as it helped commerce and literacy. Today, much of the traditional letter writing has been replaced by email, and whilst this is quick and convenient, and in many cases free, it has limitations. The obligation still, however, means that there needs to be a single ‘affordable’ option, and whilst a lower value option is on the menu, they can continue to argue that relative to the higher option, it is affordable. This strange logic may well apply for some time to come and ensure the longevity of a second class stamp service.   *these prices are correct as of September 2021 The post What is Royal Mail’s Universal Service Obligation and why is it important? appeared first on How much is a 2nd Class Stamp?. ]]> 2021/09/10/what-is-royal-mails-universal-service-obligation-and-why-is-it-important/feed/ 4 Are 2nd class stamps better value than 1st class stamps? 2021/09/09/are-2nd-class-stamps-better-value-than-1st-class-stamps/ 2021/09/09/are-2nd-class-stamps-better-value-than-1st-class-stamps/#respond Thu, 09 Sep 2021 11:33:32 +0000 Many people will tell you that the value proposition between 1st Class Royal Mail stamps and 2nd Class stamps is flimsy at best. Read more → The post Are 2nd class stamps better value than 1st class stamps? appeared first on How much is a 2nd Class Stamp?. ]]> Many people will tell you that the value proposition between 1st Class Royal Mail stamps and 2nd Class stamps is flimsy at best. People have debated the differences between 1st and 2nd class stamps with some saying that there are no meaningful distinctions; others insist it’s an unfair practice to charge more for one over another based on cost of production alone. This argument, of course, misses the point. When it comes to the price of postage stamps in the UK, there has long been an ongoing debate regarding what makes 1st Class Royal Mail Stamp worth more than its lesser sibling: 2nd class stamp. While both have different prices and features, many people would say that such a difference is negligible or even non-existent at best. Let’s take a look at what might be a viable reason for the current price gap between these two services. 1st & 2nd Class Stamp Pricing When it comes to the price of postage, a 2nd class stamp is undeniably better value. A first-class letter costs 85p while a second-class one runs 66p – both stamps are relatively good values when compared to rates in Europe and America and of course, this differential continues for both small and large parcels at 1st and 2nd class rates. When comparing the costs to mail a letter domestically and internationally, it varies wildly depending on which country you are in. As an example, USPS I the United States of America is much cheaper than their EU counterparts. Typically, it only costs $1.15 USD for 1st class postage in America while rates range between €0.85-€2 ($1-$3) in Europe depending on what you are mailing (such as an A5 envelope or “large letters”). The gap between current 1st and 2nd class stamp prices is quite large, with second class stamps costing 66p and 1st class stamps 85p (correct in September 2021). Historically, this differential has never been so large and increasingly it seems unjustified, but what it is based on? Postal Delivery Services According to Royal Mail, a letter will reach its destination within the UK with a 1st class stamp on it in one working day. A 2nd class stamp on your letter means that you can expect to receive it between two and three days, but most of the time, letters arrive at their destinations by the second workday after they were mailed out. It’s only when you look closer at the process Royal Mail follows that you can see the differences, or lack of them. If you were to post two identical envelopes in a post box today, one with first class stamps on it and the other with a second class stamp on it, the chances are they would both arrive the next day. The reason for this is that on collection, they are both put into the same bag, they are both sent to the sorting office where they are separated, albeit briefly, by their first and second class status. But then they are bundled together for onward distribution to the next delivery hub. So, a letter from London to Glasgow would make its way from the London Sorting office to the Glasgow Sorting office typically by road or rail. They don’t run separate trucks or trains for first and second class, it’s all bundled together, so both letters are going to the same place in the same bag. When they arrive at the destination sorting office they are sorted into the rounds for postmen and women and sent out for delivery, hence they may well arrive together, despite being different postage rates. Of course, this doesn’t happen all the time, there are obviously exceptions and times when second class will sit for an additional day on a sorting office floor. But not often. The postal service in the UK is quite efficient and they aim to clear all mail the day it arrives. Is 1st class postage worth it? If you search online you will find that much is made of the fact that it is possible to claim up to £20 in compensation from Royal Mail it an item is lost in the pot and send first class. What they always miss, however, is that the same compensation exists if you’ve sent the item second class. Sure, there are hurdles to jump through to claim for a lost item, not least of which a minimum 10 day hiatus whilst they wait to see if it turns up, but after that their compensation process is fairly straightforward. Royal Mail makes a feature of the compensation on their website saying: Aims to deliver the next working day including Saturdays Includes compensation cover up to £20* Prices start at 85p for letters up to 100g Same price for all UK addresses When you compare it to the 2nd Class stamp list there’s not a great deal of difference: Delivery in two to three working days including Saturdays Includes compensation cover up to £20* Prices start at 66p for letters up to 100g Same price for all UK addresses As you can see, the main difference is simply speed, but in today’s online and interconnected world, just how important is this, and given the nature of the distribution network, is it worth the premium?   The post

We all know that, but while they seem so obvious, we forget it so often. The only way to keep it in mind is to repeat it to ourselves every now and then. But the reminder doesn’t end there. Repeating it helps us focus on the things that matter most. In this article, you will learn about the importance of having a strong brand, how to craft a clear message, and how to start using words properly. If you are ready to take your small business to the next level, read on.<br /><strong>Words color perceptions</strong><br />Words are everywhere and so often, we don’t even notice them. Words are powerful because they can shape and direct our perceptions, and from this, our emotions. When we choose the right words, we can create positive images in our heads. We also, however, can create negative emotions, like fear or doubt, in our perceptions. Thus, when we talk about our products, for example, if we use words like “cheesy,” “boring,” or “complicated,” we are likely to create a picture in the minds of others of the same words. This will likely, then, impact their opinions of your product. They may associate cheesy with boring or complicated with boring, and so on. The more you control the words you use, the more you control how people perceive your products.<br /><strong>Set the tone</strong><br />As you set out to craft a message and make your mark on the world, there are a few things to keep in mind to get the tone right. For starters, you want to own the communication channels you are involved in. This includes social media posts, email signature, company brochures, and more. It’s not enough to just push out the message and hope it gets out there. You want to be actively involved in how the message gets perceived. Collect your messages, set the tone, and own the channels with your tone of voice and the images you create with your words.<br />Listen and look<br />Communication is about more than words, it’s also about listening and looking. When you are crafting your brand message, make sure you are listening to the audience you want to reach with that message. What do they want to know? What do they need? What do they want? And when you are writing your messages, be sure to look at the language you are using, at the images that accompany those words, and at the style of your whole communication. A brand image that is cheesy, for example, may create cheesy words in the mind of the audience. And if a thousand people in a thousand different places create cheesy minds, is that a cheesy brand? No, it is a brand that is likely to fail.<br /><strong>Consider others</strong><br />Be sure to also consider your audience’s past experiences with your products and your brand. Where have they come from before? What do they know? What do they believe? What do they want? Another thing to consider is the language that you use in your messages. Be sure the language you use is not language that is too high-level for your audience. The language you use should be language that your audience can understand. You want your audience to feel, understand, and take action from the message, not be baffled by it. Take a look at the language you are using, and make sure it is language your audience can understand.<br />Tell a Strong, Compelling Story<br />Finally, you want to tell a strong, compelling story with your brand. The story that you tell with your brand is the story that helps to define your company and often the story that helps people get to know you and your products. The more stories you have, the more in-depth you can be, and the stronger your brand will be. The story you tell should be significant and memorable. It should also have a strong, clear message that stands out. And it should be compelling and captivating. A strong, memorable story that stands out, is clear, and is compelling can help to build a strong brand that lasts for a long time. You want to build a strong brand that will last for years, not just a few months or years. That is why you want to invest in building a strong brand from the very beginning.<br /><strong>Craft a Clear Message</strong><br />Finally, your brand message is what you want to stand out among the rest. Your brand message is what you want to get across to your potential customers. What do you want them to get from your brand? What do you want them to think about when they see your brand? What do you want them to feel? What do you want them to do? Your brand message is what makes your brand clear and what will help others understand it. Your brand message is what you want others to associate your brand with. Your brand message is what will help to differentiate your brand from the rest and help others remember it. It is what will help those who see your brand to associate it with something good. Your brand message is what will help to create a strong brand. It is what will help to create a strong brand, and what will help it to be strong and durable.</span></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-op-section-term field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Section:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/sections/sales-marketing" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Sales, Marketing</a></div></div></div> Thu, 28 Apr 2022 18:00:44 +0000 dmazzella@is-incorp.com 404 at 2022 Marketing Trends Examined /content/2022-marketing-trends-examined <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">The marketing world will see some significant changes </span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Marketing expert Tim Parkin offers some  Marketing Predictions for 2022, and how marketers and companies can prepare.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">"Video will become the cornerstone of marketing campaigns thanks to streaming TV and social media platforms. If not, they will be missing out on valuable leads, which means a negative impact on business—lost time, money and effort.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">“If you’re starting with bad lists, you won't get results and you just won't know why,” says Sky Cassidy, CEO of <a href=" Data</a>. “Maybe you're using one of these list companies that’s really good at sales but doesn’t know or care about data. They see an opportunity where they can write some code and it creates something they can sell. They're not really interested in having quality data beyond being able to sell it.”<br /><br />Adds Cassidy, “one key problem for email marketers: the reality that any list from a vendor is bound to be flawed. Marketers can’t be sure how names arrived on the list. For instance, some of them may have been taken from shared IP addresses that don’t require users to opt-in.”(1)<br /><br />According to Cassidy, “other lissts may have been derived from catch-all domains that collect improperly addressed emails or those sent to inactive users. Making matters worse, they won’t bounce back, so the senders never realize the data is bad.”(2)<br /><br />“Over 50 percent of the emails out there are on catch-all domains,” Cassidy explains. Reputable data companies—and there are some out there—work hard to scrub their lists and make sure they are highly targeted. A data provider worth its salt will use machine learning and proprietary data algorithms to ensure the accuracy of its lists.<br /><br />Best Email Practices: There are proven methods to make sure your email lists accomplish what they are intended to do, reach potential customers and positively influence their decisions. Some of the things Cassidy recommends are:<br />• Keep your email list clean.<br />• Build and maintain an opt-in list.<br />• Use a different email service provider to send cold campaigns than you use for your opt-in/newsletter campaigns.<br />• Don’t send emails too frequently to cold lists.<br />• Make it easy to opt-out.<br />“If marketers fail to put in the time to keep their lists up to spec, bad things can and probably will happen. More of the company’s email will end up in the spam folder. Click rates could plummet and a company could end up paying for bad names, says Cassidy.(4)<br /><br />“Unfortunately, it's not really easy to catch these types of bad data providers—that is garbage data providers,” Cassidy says.<br /><br />One way to boost the odds that you will get enough useful names is to cast a wider net and use multiple providers.<br /><br />That way marketers can measure one against the other and weed out the worst performers. “Have more than one data provider,” Cassidy says.  “That’s probably the cleanest way to do it ….If you're working with garbage data, you're going to get garbage results.”<br /><br />“Most of the data companies that peddle email marketing lists are selling junk,” according to Cassidy.<br /><br />Businesses and their marketing team need to be aware of this dirty data. If they don’t take the necessary steps to maintain their own lists, they could be seeing major red flags like more bounce backs, fewer clicks and ultimately much less-effective campaigns.<br /><br />“Data companies know their lists are inadequate, ‘but they don’t care,’” Cassidy says. “It’s hard work to do the things I’m talking about”… to produce high-quality, clean lists.<br /><br /><strong>About MountainTop Data</strong><br />MountainTop Data, headquartered in Los Angeles, CA, has been providing data services for B2B marketing for almost two decades. Therefore, they have become a crucial component of any marketing effort.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">As often the first indicator of a company’s offerings and values, its website is a digital business card. To wade through the clutter in order to build a professional website on their own owners may struggle. Some guidelines from an expert may help.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Francesca Marano, WordPress Community and Partnerships Manager at SiteGround says “Choosing the right web host is crucial - look for a provider that works best for the business owner’s key considerations: important items to focus on include security and performance optimizations as well as support, in addition to storage, bandwidth, backups and domains.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Adds Marano, when it comes to building a site, it’s best to start small. As a first step in design, choose a basic theme that can be expanded upon later and some standard plugins.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">For example, a flower shop will want to make sure they have a gallery plugin to showcase the beauty of their offerings. A furniture store with multiple locations will want to ensure they have maps prominently displayed. The list goes on.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">While creating a beautiful and functional site is essential, there are a few other elements that will determine a business’s success - security, performance, and accessibility.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><strong>Secure Website: </strong>Creating a secure site doesn’t have to be complicated. A reliable web hosting provider should offer security protections and free backups in case of a cyber attack. Setting up password-protected pages where appropriate (such as an e-commerce checkout page) is also key. Private information ideally should be encrypted, which is done by installing an SSL certificate and should be never shared with third parties. Keep in mind that a quality web hosting company should offer SSL certificates for free.Responsive Website: A site’s performance and load time play a big role in the experience customers have. That’s why it’s important to check the website speed optimizations that a website host offers. Human error is inevitable. Forms get lost. The customer experience suffers.<br />Businesses that digitize their customer interactions gain efficiency. You reduce the time it takes to collect and share that information. You also reduce the possibility of human error and losing information. And you can analyze this “fresh data” to find opportunities to improve your business -- particularly, how effectively you interact with customers. Without real-time data collection, it’s almost impossible to learn from and act on customer data to continually improve the customer experience.<br />Going digital may seem daunting -- doesn’t it require a huge investment in enterprise technology to change things? Actually, no. With mobile digital devices, SMBs can use mobile platforms to eliminate inefficient paper forms, manual workflows, and data silos. Mobile digital devices -- smartphones, tablets, wifi-connected laptops -- and the right mobile software platform together provide you with real-time visibility into the data your business is collecting.<br />Paper delivers an antiquated customer experience, where estimates, work summaries, and invoices can get lost and are only as good as the penmanship of the employee that writes them. Going digital means being able to automatically email customers detailed, clear estimates, fulsome work summaries (with before and after pictures), and up-to-the-minute invoices -- and also, for example, recommendations for upcoming maintenance, customer satisfaction surveys, and electronic coupons to generate additional business. Which experience would you rather provide to your customers?<br />All SMBs can benefit from going digital: if they let go of the old way of doing things, they’ll be able to do more. Making life easier for your customer is crucial to exceeding customers’ expectations. By digitizing how you collect information, you can unleash the value in your data. Armed with insights from that data, you can then optimize the experience of each of your customers.<br />James Robins is Chief Marketing Officer of <a href=";, a mobile platform that makes it simple for businesses to automate how work is done.</span></p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-op-section-term field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Section:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/sections/sales-marketing" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Sales, Marketing</a></div></div></div> Thu, 21 Feb 2019 15:20:04 +0000 dmazzella@is-incorp.com 351 at Good Design Is Good Business /content/good-design-good-business <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;"><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/arielle_0.jpg" style="width: 170px; height: 170px; margin: 5px; float: right;" />Good design is good business.<br />From dating apps to online shopping, products, services and people are chosen based on beauty.<br />Successful business owners know this well, according to Arielle Kimbarovsky. She is a marketing intern at <a href=" />Here are some reasons to focus on design:<br /><strong>1. Good design makes a strong first impression: It is about using colors, shapes, textures, space, forms, images, and content in a harmonious, balanced way: </strong>A great logo design can be the difference between blending in and standing out from the competition. But while the value of a great logo is often recognize, it is not always prioritized.<br />New business owners often incorrectly believe that a good logo will cost thousands or tens of thousand of dollars.  As a result, they sometimes buy pre-made logos in an online logo store or try a do-it-yourself approach.<br />In fact, entrepreneurs aren’t the only ones who make the mistake of using generic logos-businesses of all sizes sometimes use logo shortcuts, only to find out that it’s even more expensive to rebrand later.<br />After all, memorable logos are 13% more likely to get consumers attention, and 71.6% more likely to get a positive response from consumers.<br />That approach can make a big difference in a world of noise.<br />Companies only have a matter of seconds before a customer makes up their mind in the digital age,.<br />Those few seconds are crucial because they can make or break a sale – and design plays a huge role in the deciding factor.<br />For example, it only takes people 10 seconds to form a first impression of a brand’s logo, but it takes 5-7 impressions for consumers to recognize the logo<br />Numerous studies confirm the importance of first impressions.<br />The same goes for websites. Three studies found that a mere 50 milliseconds were all people needed to form an opinion about a website. Google performed similar testing and found an even slimmer margin: a speedy 17 to 50 milliseconds were all people needed to decide how they felt about a website.<br />Good design is a signal to customers that they should buy from the company.<br />This is true not only online, but also for physical products.<br />Packaging design, for example, can alter the perception of any product.<br />It is nice to think that consumers make decisions on products and services strictly based on merit, with the best one winning. In spite of that hope, psychologists and retailers agree that in many cases this just isn’t true. Quality aside, sometimes the flashier, prettier or sexier product wins the day.<br /><strong>2. Good design helps any business stand out: Every company, no matter the industry, faces a hefty amount of competition: </strong>Creating a successful product, service or website is all about getting eyeballs to it. But the great thing about good design, it is not necessary to spend more to generate more attention.<br />Human beings have an attractiveness bias; they perceive beautiful things as being better, regardless of whether they actually are better. All else being equal, individuals prefer beautiful things and believe beautiful things function better. As in nature, function can follow form.<br /><strong>3. Good design builds customer relationships: </strong>Since relationships are based on emotion, customers are often emotionally connected to a company. A site like crowdspring these needs are leveraged in many ways.<br />For example, to showcase the emotions someone may go through when seeing a beautiful design, a fun illustration to show that can be offered to crowdspring’s clients will get a design their customers will love:<br />Good design makes it easier to create emotional connections.<br />A company’s designs should support the principles it espouses and through which it has built its efforts around. In short try to reach customers’ hearts (rather than their wallets).<br />Create valuable, sustainable customer relationships by building the brand’s visual identity on the foundation of emotional connection. There’s no better way to secure consumer loyalty than by connecting through shared values, and a great design is the most effective way to illustrate them.<br />Finally, a good design can help it be big tomorrow.</span></p> <p><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif;">Arielle Kimbarovsky is a marketing intern at <a href=" </a>– one of the world’s leading marketplaces for crowdsourced logo design, web design, graphic design, product design, and company naming services. Merchants can capitalize on the influx of customers by properly preparing for them and their purchases.</p> <p>According to Chris Francis, VP of market development at Worldpay US It’s important for retailers to incorporate the right mix of payment methods to ensure customers can pay how they want to. In fact, 78 percent of consumers say that the payments experience affects their willingness to return to a retailer’s website. Small businesses should consider adopting new payment methods to meet the changing needs of customers, such as e-wallets, mobile wallets, P2P payments and EMV chips.</p> <ol> <li>E-wallets are currently one of the most popular payment options -- projected to hold 46 percent of the market in 2021 -- in the U.S., as they are easy-to-use and accessible. E-wallets like PayPal store all necessary payment information on their secure platforms, allowing customers to confidently make purchases with the touch of a button. Incorporating e-wallets makes the checkout process easier and encourage consumers to make additional purchases.</li> <li>Mobile wallets, such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Android Pay, are another attractive option for consumers. Mobile wallets’ appeal is easy to see, as they simplify and streamline the payments process by allowing shoppers to make purchases with just a tap. Currently, only 35 percent of retailers accept Apple Pay, demonstrating there is room for more retailers to adopt the trend.</li> <li>P2P payments, or peer-to-peer payments, have become increasingly popular, especially for millennials. P2P payments allow consumers to easily split the cost with friends, something that’s appealing to millennials who don’t typically carry cash. Platforms like Venmo have recently expanded to businesses’ mobile sites, meaning that merchants have the opportunity to be an early adopter of this trend.</li> <li>EMV chips have been adopted by many businesses already, but some are still lagging behind. The increased security of this technology lets customers make payments in-store more comfortably, as they are not concerned about their information getting stolen. Most credit and debit cards are equipped with EMV chips, so now is the time for retailers to follow suit and adopt the technology to read them.</li> </ol> <p>Small Business Saturday provides the perfect opportunity for merchants to adopt new payment options, and these four methods provide a great base for consideration. It’s key for businesses to have the right assortment of payment methods to ensure they’re catering to customers’ needs, allowing shoppers to pay in a way that’s most convenient for them.</p> </div></div></div><div class="field field-name-field-op-section-term field-type-taxonomy-term-reference field-label-above"><div class="field-label">Section:&nbsp;</div><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even"><a href="/sections/sales-marketing" typeof="skos:Concept" property="rdfs:label skos:prefLabel" datatype="">Sales, Marketing</a></div></div></div> Mon, 20 Nov 2017 19:10:24 +0000 dmazzella@is-incorp.com 317 at Six Tips For Better Small Business Holiday Sales /content/six-tips-better-small-business-holiday-sales <div class="field field-name-body field-type-text-with-summary field-label-hidden"><div class="field-items"><div class="field-item even" property="content:encoded"><p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/Headshot-Chris-Francis-WorldPay.jpg" style="width: 220px; height: 283px; margin: 6px; float: left;" />For small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) the holiday season really is the most wonderful time of the year. Checkout lines get a little longer, website traffic increases and sales are expected to soar sky high. In fact, holiday sales could increase anywhere from 4 to 4.5 percent over last year with online sales jumping almost 20 percent.<br />Here are Chris Francis, VP of Market Development at Worldpay US six tips can help prepare your business for the seasonal sales surge.</p> <ol> <li><strong>Walk down memory lane: </strong>Review last year’s results to get a better sense of which promotions worked and which didn’t. Whether it’s a free giveaway or limited-time discount, examine the effectiveness of your sales strategies to help shed light on areas for improvement. Also, remember to use a wide range of metrics – including revenue figures and customer satisfaction surveys – to measure your success in 2017 and beyond.</li> <li><strong>Stay local:</strong> Support your surrounding community by researching and participating in “Shop Local” holiday campaigns. Dishing out discounts and other freebies to those who live in the neighborhood is an easy way to help boost sales and establish new local connections for your business. If you’re not sure where to get started, consider taking part in Small Business Saturday on November 25th or start connecting early next year with Independents Week at the start of July. These annual celebrations of small and independent businesses may contribute to your business becoming a go-to destination for local shoppers.</li> <li><strong>Brush up on trainings:</strong> With the holiday shopping season, comes plenty of returns and exchanges. Help your full-time and seasonal employees prepare for the rush by offering a refresher on store operations and policies. Not only can this help employees avoid confusion and speed up the checkout process, but a little extra training can also ensure things keep running smoothly even as business starts to heat up.</li> <li><strong>Create a backup plan</strong>: E-commerce sales tend to spike around the holiday season – and that could spell trouble for your business. From a website crash to a faulty app, an influx of shoppers has the potential to derail your business’ e-commerce channels when customers are using them the most. Keep your hosting provider’s contact information on hand to ensure you’re not left empty handed if things take a turn for the worse. Once you’ve diagnosed the problem, apologize for the inconvenience over email or social media and let customers know when your website or app will be back online.</li> <li><strong>Make the necessary investments:</strong>The more channels, the better. According to a study from the Harvard Business Review, omni-channel shoppers not only spend more than those who use a single channel, but are also more likely to make repeat trips to a retailer’s store and recommend a brand to friends and family. Boost your bottom line with an omni-channel approach or mobile POS that complements your in-store shopping experience and paves the way for greater customer convenience.</li> <li><strong>Communicate early and ofte</strong>n: Missing a delivery date will help keep your business top of mind with customers – but for all the wrong reasons. Reduce the possibility of a late shipment or delivery by communicating all deadlines with suppliers and shoppers on more than one occasion. While it may seem redundant, regularly monitoring deadlines can mean the difference between maintaining customer loyalty or a delivery disaster.</li> </ol> <p>The nights leading up to the holiday season are guaranteed to be anything but silent for most businesses. With the six tips outlined above, your small business can make the most of this big annual shopping spree.</p> <p>Chris Francis is Vice President of Market Development at Worldpay US, a global payments provider for all channels: in-store, online and via mobile. Runners Salaria Sport Village<a href=" style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 173px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 118px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5568995548355028850" border="0" alt="" src="; /></a><br /><div align="justify">Ciao a tutti i miei amici Runners del Salaria Sport Village...

Scandalous I know. I also love WIPs and chains. I'm holding both right now actually. =)<br /> <br /> I used to sew a lot, but currently I crochet. Let's face it, a skein of yarn and a hook are more mobile than a sewing machine. I try to keep a project bag with me, whenever I leave the house, for downtimes.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="; width="320" /></a></div> <br /> I'm currently working on an&nbsp;<a href="; target="_blank">Orient Beach Tunic</a>. I made a goof with the yarn and picked up four&nbsp;<a href="; target="_blank">Shawl in A Cake</a>&nbsp;in Restful Rainbow instead of&nbsp;<a href="; target="_blank">Shawl In A Ball</a>. What's the difference? I don't know because I haven't looked. I do know they're both blends and they look similar. Check out this fade.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="; width="320" /></a></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> Typically cakes abruptly change from one color to the next, but this one does a subtle blend to each color.<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1194" height="320" src="; width="238" /></a></div> <br /> <br /> While I'm going all crochet on you I'll add the hooks currently on my favorite list are these&nbsp;<a href="; target="_blank">Boye Ergonomic hooks</a>. I now question why I didn't buy bigger hooks a decade or two ago. I always bought the cheap aluminum hooks because they were the cheapest of course, but for a couple dollars more they beef up those handles. Why do those hook makers feel when I'm crocheting delicate thread it's perfectly acceptable to shorten the hook that's already the size of pencil lead? I don't get it. I was crocheting snowflake ornaments last Christmas. The hook was tiny so I baked it with&nbsp;<a href="; target="_blank">Sculpey polymer clay</a>&nbsp;wrapped around the handle. Just like that I had a manageable size hook the I had extended an inch so it fit my hand.<br /> <br /> Alright, all this typing means I'm not hooking.<br /> <br /> Jennifer<br /> <br /> WIP - work in progress<br /> Chain - crochet stitch<br /> Hooker - someone who crochet (uses hook)<br /> <br /> * No affil2018/07/hooker-by-day.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4901493734117641015.post-7343076008754389440Thu, 26 Jul 2018 17:05:00 +00002018-07-26T12:05:07.073-05:00cone of shamedew clawsEmma LouMalteseEmma LouDental work on dogs is never fun, but when you combined it with removing back dew claws it's really bad.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1194" data-original-width="1600" height="238" src="; width="320" /></a></div> <br /> Emma came home from the vet yesterday with a cone around her neck. I didn't get any pictures while we were covered in foam because it was insane. Initially it was cool to see all the pink and green/yellow foam flying in the air over the crowd. The kids thought the foam was awesome. Kaitlyn Joy wanted to roll around in the bubbles. Meanwhile we adults kept rubbing our eyes. Think about it, foam is made from soap. Soap and eyes don't mix. Do you remember the pain from the last time you got shampoo in your eyes? Yeah... not cool. At one point I grabbed Kaitlyn Joy and blindly lead her out of the crowd and away from the foam machines. Although we enjoyed running the race with our friends, it's the first and last time I'll be doing a foam run. I don't mind running sticky, having soapy shoes, nor having my skin turn pink from the soap dye, but when you're in a crowd having foam blown on you it's shockingly suffocating. When you inhale foam and even for a moment feel like your drowning, it's quite frightening. By the time the race began we were pink and all my make-up had been washed off by the foam. We were stormed on after stepping out of the foam which was perfect timing to get all the soap out of our eyes. The rain stopped before the race began.&nbsp;</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="180" /></a></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> Believe it or not, Kaitlyn Joy and the two boys are the same age. Traditionally we don't give our graduating kids anything. I'm not sure why we've never done anything beyond praying over them, but this year we decided to remedy that.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Tomorrow is the last Sunday we get to have our nineteen 5th graders in children's church. I have to admit, I'm being a bit sappy while thinking about them never walking through our doors again while heading to their class. I know some will stay on to help both during large group time and in our small group classrooms.&nbsp;</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="180" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="; width="320" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="180" /></a></div> <br /> <div style="text-align: center;"> As you can see, we gave them a plaque with their name, it's meaning, and a verse to go along with each one. This was harder than I expected. As parents start trying to be more cleaver about the spelling and uniqueness of their child's name, it's harder to find their meanings. One girl was thrilled when she saw the meaning of her name. She said her mom made the name up so she never knew what it meant. In my hours of searching, I discovered her name was a variation of another name.</div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="180" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> We put a letter from us, the children's church directors (I'm the assistant director), in each bag.</div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="180" /></a></div> <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="180" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: center;"> 19 bags for our 5th graders.</div> 2015/08/5th-grade-promotion-gift.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4901493734117641015.post-4662027909729633585Fri, 24 Jul 2015 17:32:00 +00002015-07-24T12:32:18.752-05:008 Years Oldclub swim leagueKaitlyn JoyPure Joysummer swim leagueSummer SwimKaitlyn Joy joined a summer swim league this year. Despite taking three rounds of swim lessons when she was&nbsp;4-6 years old, Kaitlyn Joy began the summer doing what looked like controlled drowning. It was seriously sad. She definitely improved a lot an even managed to win a couple ribbons. They have&nbsp;a wonky rule that each team will only receive three ribbons for each race, 1st-6th.&nbsp; There were times when she came in 4th, but didn't get a ribbon because 1st-3rd were her teammates. Thanks ]]> By: Www.weddingbusinesstoday.Com #comment-15737 Sun, 26 May 2013 17:45:19 +0000 There are several ways you can change a valve spring without removing the heads. To learn more about these Smittybilt air compressors, trail tools, high-quality winches, or any other Smittybilt product, just visit the 4Wheel Drive Hardware (4WD) website. The longer that you use for tools for, the bigger tank size you want to have. ]]> By: 6512 and growing #comment-3346 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 22:06:13 +0000 In reply to Justine. Justine, that is interesting. It’s funny how people assume kid food has to be bland, sweet or cutely-shaped to be palatable. I always think of kids in India getting weaned on curries. my kids love shepards pie, but not much is a match for ketchup. ]]> By: Steph #comment-3345 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 05:43:10 +0000 PS- Thanks for the tip on the local wheat flour!!! I had no idea! I had been recently secretly wishing for some local flour, and my wish came true!! xxoo ]]> By: Steph #comment-3344 Thu, 09 Dec 2010 05:32:06 +0000 That’s such a good question, about picky eaters. We have been feeding Chloe vegetables, including green ones, since before she had teeth. And now, at 3 and a half, she has decided that she won’t eat anything green. I do not plan my cooking around what the kids will eat. I simply expect them to eat it. One night a couple of weeks ago, I cooked something that I knew Chloe wouldn’t like (can’t remember what it was now), so I offered to make her mac-and-cheese. Ever since then, almost every night, before even trying her dinner, she (a) proclaims that she doesn’t like the “green stuff”, and (b) requests to have either mac-and-cheese or a quesadilla. You’d think I’d been catering to her all along, the way she has now come to expect bread and cheese for dinner. We don’t give in. (I make a lot of one-pot type meals, and I think Chloe eats better on nights where everything is separate: meat, vegetable, starch, etc). Jordan, at age 1, eats almost everything (except, like Col, avocados). We’ll see what he’s like at age 3! ]]> By: Justine #comment-3343 Wed, 08 Dec 2010 19:26:09 +0000 So my eyes are not playing tricks on me. It IS snowing on this site :) I love what you serve your kids. I would devour them myself but yes, feeding them to kids under 7 could be an ordeal. I have the same philosophy as you – serve them what we eat and we’ll help them develop a more adventurous palate. I firmly believe that. When I was over at my friend’s place for dinner, she made the adults shepherd’s pie (which I thought was fantastic kids’ food too) and she made our daughters hot dogs and carrots (the latter upon my request – they would’ve otherwise only had hotdogs with ketchup). Her reasoning was that her daughter wouldn’t like the pie anyway so she had to give her something she would eat but to substitute that with an unhealthy alternative in my mind is NOT an alternative. I gave my daughter some of the pie on my plate and she ate them just fine. Of course with kids, with ketchup on the plate, little else stands a chance so she chose to devour the hot dog the rest of the evening. I just wish that my friend had at least given the pie a try first before resorting to an alternative… OK, off my soapbox now. Always glad to be here *listening* to your stories. I enjoyed The Red Tent too but I’m still daunted by baking bread. ]]> By: Heather #comment-3342 Wed, 08 Dec 2010 19:19:49 +0000 I have one child who will eat anything, and one who I swear I feel will eat NOTHING. It is always good to hear that perhaps this is normal, and that kiddos can go through stages. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. ]]> By: rose #comment-3341 Wed, 08 Dec 2010 17:26:43 +0000 Love this post, and all the comments too. I will throw in my two cents, which is that I look at mealtimes as more than what goes into their bellies. We sit together, talk, listen, express gratitude as well as complaints. I do my best to make healthy food that tastes good and they eat what they want to eat. (“they” are two girls, 5.5 and 2.5). I don’t make different things for them, but I will try to modify their portion of things to better suit their particular tastes. When they complain about what I’ve made I keep in mind that their ill-will may be about something else entirely and that yelling about yucky green stuff on their plate is a safe way to get those confusing, scary feelings out. I do have moments of nagging worry that they aren’t getting “enough” and that extends far beyond the dinner table. They love green smoothies most of the time and it is a wonderfully satisfying experience to watch them guzzle kale in a glass! I think children can be trusted to do what they need to do in almost every situation. If we take a broad view of their childhoods it makes it easier to let it slide if all they eat for dinner one night (or three) is bread. They are finding their way, just as we are and with enough love and respect I think they will land in a good place, full of broccoli and beets and homemade bread. ]]> By: kate #comment-3340 Wed, 08 Dec 2010 16:09:56 +0000 Have you been peeking in my windows around dinnertime??? My kids cringe at almost all things green, although the *only* meat they want to eat is venison. I have friends whose children happily consume asian slaw, beet salad, chard galore, and things I balked at until age 20….I try and not compare (WHAT did I do wrong?!?!) but still…The best we can do, I think, is to keep offering a variety of foods. Our big effort right now is to NOT make meal time a war zone. We offer the food– and the kids know when it comes to dinner, you get what you get– but if they start to whine or avoid foods, we’ll ask once or twice, but then drop it. I don’t want them to associate good foods with miserable family time, know what I mean? Here’s to the kale-laden battles! And ps– thanks for the ww bread recipe. THe kids are mighty sick of mine, so I think we’ll switch it up…And I know what you mean about ebay– my six year old was overhead saying “I LOVE going there (about a friend’s house), his mom has bread that’s super squishy and white and comes out of a bag! And she makes us peanut butter and sugar sandwiches with it too!” um…yeah. not. gonna. happen. ]]> By: Katie #comment-3339 Wed, 08 Dec 2010 06:19:21 +0000 The best thing I have going for us is that we all sit at the table together. You keep reminding me that I need to be making our yogurt. Bread too. ]]>
