Oh how I love that my in-laws are willing to take my kids for a few days. As I drove home thoughts raced through my mind on how I was going to use the next 72 hours. With each mile my list kept getting longer and longer. I thought of all the projects I could accomplish and the organizing I could do. Oh so here I am blogging….was that on my list? No! But I had to take a moment and list in the next 72 besides my two day packed with clients what am I going to do for me. So here is my list …<br />1. Get my Hair colored and cut (Tuesday morning) <br />2. Spend time with Ryan<br />3. Go to the temple<br />4. Out to lunch with a friend (who has no idea how much I miss her)<br />5. I have a blog!So it has been almost 8 months....come on nothing has happened in 8 months to blog about. <br /><br />Oh wait,there was that little abduction! You know the one that Crazy Lady Nancy Grace reported on for weeks on her show. What? You don't watch HLN? You mean to tell me you are missing out on Joy Behar's new show too...What a crime!<br /><br />I was abducted by the FB Aliens. They made me update at least twice a day, play Scrabble till 2am and spend hours looking at pictures of my "friends". One even tried to convince me that starting a farm or becoming part of the Mafia would bring me much happiness. I did resist....with the click of a mouse I blocked a tree from being planted, quizzes upon quizzes to take and the most important...many pillow fights! They started to see that I was not going to fall into their trap and they called reinforcements.<br />My cell phone had lost it will to live or even charge itself. Ryan,my sweet husband (I think he works for them) bought me a new phone. There I was sitting with my new phone only to find in the small left hand corner of the 3 inch screen a little blue F. Hummmmm.....that F was not for the Forbes application or even the Fashion Police. It was them! They found me on my phone! It started all over again. This time was much worse. Now I checked updates every 33 seconds. Alerts flashed constantly on my phone. Ringers that I did not know I had began to alert me of Status changes, posts to my post, posts to my friends posts and even a FB mail alert. Things became very difficult when Ryan accused me of having an affair. The phone with the FB app had replaced the soft warm spot next to me in our bed. It even at one time had it's own pillow. After I promised to change I still found myself sneaking it in our room and tucking it under the sheet on the side of the bed with the ringers turned off. It was the only way I could know if Sally made it home from the club, Jack had a great date with Kristen or how Chantal hated the speaker at church preach about being a good parent-because she was not. (names have been changed to protect the innocent) It was my life line. I knew it was bad when I started to take it to the bathroom with me. I finally gave in and came up with a list....<br /><br /><em><strong>25 Random Things about me.....Corrin Carter Keeler</strong></em><br /><br />1. I hate spiders. Little ones, big ones, hairy ones, and even little babies still in the egg sack ones. Sadly I have passed this fear on to my son Carter. I don’t like to kill them either. I am terrified that in my sleep the other 499 siblings will attack me.<br /><br />2. I have a very talented tongue! Me and Gene Simmons! I can twist it, taco and burrito it, touch my nose, and use it to whistle VERY loud. (which always surprises the person next to me) <br /><br />3. All three of my children were c-sections but only one was filmed for TV. The birth of Carter was on TLC’s Maternity Ward. <br /><br />4. My given name is Corrin Carter, just Corrin no middle name. However, on the first day of 1st grade my Dad told the teacher my name was CORKY and they believed him! (it was just a nickname) Some of my cousins still call me Corky.<br /><br />5. It took me 4 times get my permit, 4 times to get my license and only 8 hours get in my first accident! <br /><br />6. My hair is about 70% gray. I have to have it colored every 6 weeks. <br /><br />7. I have dyslexia and had a very difficult time learning to read and I still can't spell. I repeated the 2nd grade because I was so far behind. This was ok because I changed my name back to Corrin so everyone thought I was a new kid. (Corky's sister) Now I love to read and I owe it all to my mother. She made me work just as hard as the other kids. I love her for never giving up on me! <br /><br />8. I could pass on Chocolate anytime but crusty warm bread…hold me back!<br /><br />9. I am great at doing laundry….just not the folding and putting away part.<br /><br />10. My husband diagnosed me with having “Putdown Syndrome”. I put something (not someone) down and move on. I can never find my keys, my purse, or important items. I often have 10 projects going on with little messes everywhere. It drives him crazy! He often follows me around picking up all my messes. <br /><br />11. I love BR pistachio ice cream, spicy foods, sushi, cinnamon bears and warm crusty bead! (wait…I think I already mentioned that)<br /><br />12. I live within each of my kids….Carter has my kind heart, Hailey has my feisty spirit, and Charles has my big brown “I didn’t do it” eyes and we found out just recently the ability to cut hair.<br /><br />13. I have never been a runner….but someday I would like to be.<br /><br />14. I know little to nothing about music. A little over a year ago they asked me to teach music to the children at church. I still know little to nothing about music but I LOVE faking it. I NEVER want to do anything else.<br /><br />15. I have a horrible time remembering anything. For years I blamed it on being pregnant. But since I am not having anymore children and my youngest is two I really have no excuse. If it is not written down it most likely will not happen. I have kept a planner for years and would be LOST without it! I have tried all sorts of tricks to help me but I am pretty sure I was wired this way. <br /><br />16. There is nothing more important to me than my family<br /><br />17. I was blessed with great parents. My mom is the most righteous, selfless, kind person I know. She is my idol…someday I hope to be half the women and mother she is to me! My Dad taught me the value of hard work, to play hard and to love. He is a great man to whom I was terrified as a teenager but admire and love as an adult. <br /><br />18. I hate peas. Green small squishy disgusting explosions in your mouth. But I do love raw snap peas! Weird huh?<br /><br />19. About eight years ago I built a bed. My sister-in-law Jennie and I each made a Picket Fence bed. We made our design and had little help from our husbands. It is now Hailey’s bed. Ever since then I have wanted to have my own workshop, fun expensive tools and the knowledge to know what to do with them. I guess secretly want to be a carpenter.<br /><br />20. I love garage sales, clearance sales, goodwill and craigslist. I shop with coupons and spend hours cutting them out and planning my grocery trips. I always walk to the back of a store (where the deals are) and work my way to the front. The thrill of a good deal brings me much pleasure.<br /><br />21. I hate to shop! Did I just say that…what a really meant was I hate to shop with other people. I love to shop ALONE. I can stay as long or as short as I like in one store.<br /><br />22. My friend Nichole said I had to put this one in…..I lost a car! This guy wanted to buy my car. (well really my Dad’s car) He asked if he could keep it over the weekend. I was young and very stupid. I did not get any ID or other information. Well he kept it…and never returned it. He and the car disappeared. To this day my Dad tells everyone that I lost a car<br /><br />23. I married my soul mate….he might not be perfect but he is perfect for me. (see #10) He is my missing piece. <br /><br />24. My favorite flower is a hydrangea. <br /><br />25. I love taking trash and making a treasure. I love watching my children get excited to see their Dad. I love having someone leave my chair feeling beautiful. I love the smell of rain on hot pavement. I love holding my children in my arms as they fall asleep. I love to hear the sounds of giggles and laughter in the morning. I love laughing so hard I wet my pants. I love having someone hold me when I cry. We still have a few more days till we will be able to negotiate a release. The Soldiers have tired to escape many times. This requires 23 layers of clothing, a hat, a scarf, and small army to get all the right fingers in the glove. After spending a 1/2 hour dressing each little brave Soldier, the Captain is tired and ready for a few moments of peace. Out the door they go ready to conquer the snow. The Captain regroups and searches for any caffeinated beverage before she tries to get the house in order, do the laundry and finish the 12 Christmas projects strung around the house. Loud knocks startle the Captain...they are back! The troops have returned cold, wet and in need of a warm beverage. Soon the clothes are peeled off layer by layer, the wet gloves are thrown in all directions as sweet words leave the Soldiers lips. "I hate these boots...it is too cold...I am hungry...Why can't I go to Tess' house?" <br />The captain uses all restraints to get the Soldiers back in line. Young voices shout for joy to be sitting up on the stand entertaining their families. However, this year for me was different. I was directing this crazy group! (really there was two of us because of the numbers and thank goodness)<br />For those of you that really know me...stop laughing! I have been attempting to teach senior primary (age 7-12) since late last December. So today was their time to shine...or like me..fake it! Along with the Junior Primary (age 3-7 ) we packed the choir seats and the first 3 rows.<br />Before church began I collected all the gum and prayed there would be no crazy disaster. I should have know something was going to happen as I sat quietly enjoy the passing of the Sacrament.<br />Charles was on my lap chowing down a whole bag a fruit snacks in 2.3 seconds. Not coming up for air should have been a warning sign. However, my brain was not focused on Charles. I was worried about forgetting some words or leading the music wrong (wait-I always lead the music wrong) Charles ended up on my mother's lap <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">gulping</span> down a bottle of milk for the remainder of the Sacrament. When the Sacrament was over I gathered my things and approached the music stand to begin this new adventure.<br />One song down, two songs down and then it hit me. To my right, out of the corner of my eye a steady stream of a white fell to the floor. As a turned my head I could see our old primary president jump quickly to her right almost landing on her daughter. Then behind her was my sweet husband holding my son tight in his arms trying to prevent another spray of puke from attacking poor Melissa. ("What did you eat for Father's Day" is a must read blog entry if you missed it ) Ryan gets it every time! As Ryan <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">attempts</span> to maneuver around my Mother and my 93 year old Grandma (in a wheelchair blocking the isle) he clinches Charles as a loud burp leads to another explosion.<br />Did you remember I was leading the music? I didn't! What do I do? Help Ryan get out of the chapel, clean the floor, pretend nothing happened or crawl under the bench? <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Hummmm</span>...the bench was looking pretty good until Melissa said "keep going we will clean this up" Do you know how difficult it is to stand there while your Mother and other sweet church friends are wiping up puke from YOUR son. <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Hhhhhhh</span>.<br />As gross as this all sounds I learned this evening as Ryan ran down the hall to the bathroom a friend followed him to see if he needed any help (and this was a guy) Apparently, he cleaned the hall from the chapel to the bathroom without missing a spot. Some sweet lady was making sure he got everything. (thanks Chris)<br />Flustered and embarrassed I was able to pull it together and finish the program. It might not have been perfect but it was beautiful! When they sang the final song my legs got a little weak, a lump filled my throat and my heart was filled with Joy. "He is always near me....watching over me"<br />This past weekend I was able to attend Time out for Women. (thanks Mom for the great birthday present) It was about finding Joy in your life. Ten months ago if you told me I would be leading music to a bunch of kids. I would have laughed. The Lord really knows how to challenge me and this was a challenge. The love and joy I have for these children is undescribable. Not a day goes by that I don't think of how blessed I am to have so many tender souls bring me so much Joy!<br /><br />PS-<br />Charles is NOT sick. He has ALWAYS had reflex issue. I freaked out...you would too if you realized in about 15 min 500 eyes were going to be focused on your sticky, gooey bum. The primary children were singing today and I would be leading. I am positive the main focus would the 200 children on the stand however this was a disaster to me. (not Ryan) upon arriving at church Ryan, the kids and all Ryan's stuff piled out of the car. While I tried to figure out how I was going to make it to the bathroom with no one stopping me or saying...."holy cow what did you seat on". I parked the car with plans to run to the nearest restroom with a whole box of wipes. About 5 min later the scrubbing and swearing had ceased. It was going to be OK. Thank goodness dark brown does not show red sour patch kids very well. Ryan was right it would be OK. As I walked with confidence to the chapel I thought that I sure needed to apologize to him for freaking out. But Ryan was not in the chapel. Someone was in our row!!! OH no...I am not apologizing now. Where was he? I entered the lobby to find our children running everywhere....well all of them except Charles....he was on the floor tucked in the coat area just in a diaper....What! Ryan was hovering over him as he was kicking and screaming. No sooner then "What happened" left my lips. Ryan turned around and I had NO more questions. He was COVERED in pancakes, strawberries, bacon, syrup, OJ and a little root beer Popsicle. All the fixing's of a Father Day breakfast! Apparently it started in the chapel and Ryan raced out to the lobby! Marshall's had a great deal on Calvin Klein's boxer briefs so a picked up a few for Carter. Carter usually just wear the normal boys underwear so I thought he might not like these one to much. I was quite surprised when he said how much he liked them because they were just like Dad's. Hailey expressed that she to wanted underwear like that. I explained that they do not make it for girls. She quickly responded "yes they do mom you have some". Ha Ha!<br /><br />The next day Carter spent the night at a friends house. I was emptying his backpack and noticed that his extra pair of underwear was missing. Carter explained that his friend really liked them and so he gave him a pair. Because now they can both have underwear like their dad's! Sweet Carter and precious Hailey slept in the same bed last night and they BOTH wet the bed! Sometime today I will load that BIG black bag full of pee soaked bedding and head to the Laundromat. Our sweet boy is learning to walk, pull everything down, and somehow learned to open a cupboard with child locks. </div><br /><div><br />Carter started to play a baseball. Practice, practice, and more practice. He loves it and so does Dad! He has a great arm and his coaches are amazed at his distance and accuracy. However, the boy can't catch. I say put him in the outfield and no one will ever know....it is t-ball.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Hailey is just as busy as ever. High School Musical is all she talks about. She dreams of visiting her cousins in Utah and taking a tour of East High. The hour was early but we were all filled with excitement as a whisper filled the room...He is coming. We rose from our seats and tears filled my eyes. Here I was about to hear the Prophet speak. He rounded the corner and stood before a choir of Missionaries singing "We Thank Thee Oh God for a Prophet". As he stood before me commenting on the hour and who's idea was it to get him out of bed for a 6am meeting, we all laughed as his humor. I don't remember much of what he told us that day but when he bore his testimony it burned a place in my heart. He said, as he looked, each one of us in the eye. "I know that Joseph Smith is a Prophet of God, just like you do. I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God, just like you do. I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer, just like you do. I know I am a Son of our Father in Heaven, just like you know you are a Daughter of our Father in Heaven." Tears poured down my cheeks as I listened to the Prophet and his testimony. At that moment I knew that this Man was not just a Man, He was the mouth peace for the Lord. He was my Prophet.<br />Tonight as I learned of his passing, I was reminded of this moment in time I shared with him. I wept. Maybe caused by stress or maybe I am about to give birth because that is the only time I get them. Since I know I am NOT pregnant...it is stress. Monday evening I started to freak out...sweet Ryan got the brunt of it. Just a few weeks ago I thought I was doing great with all the Christmas stuff. Monday evening i made a list and started to loose it. </span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:georgia;"></span></div><br /><div><span style="font-family:georgia;">Teacher gifts---The kids and I went to the store to pick out a few more things we needed for teacher gifts. (the kids made bracelets...they did it for amount 20min and lost interest. They picked out the beads, started them and well... and I made the bracelets) Carter had a breakdown at Craft Warehouse because he wanted a pair of reading glasses. "Mom look how well I can see. I really need them" Then Hailey decided she needed a pair too. By the time I checked out the whole store was staring me down because I had to screaming kids. Really I wanted to leave all my stuff they at the check stand...right next to the huge box a $5 colorful reading glasses. But I was NOT going back to this store later...I am sure they hung my picture on the crazy wall of people in the backroom. Who can forget a 5 and 4 year old flinging their bodies all over the floor and yelling "I don't like you mom...you are so mean....it is not fair" All things I remember telling my parents- I am getting old. </span></div><br /><br /><div><span style="font-family:georgia;">Christmas Cards---I bought this great template online. Had a great picture of my kids...then I noticed a LARGE shadow of Ryan's hand on Carter's shirt. CRAP! I quickly ran into the other room to find half the tree's lights not working and the extension cord in his mouth. Ryan examined the cord - I examined the baby. We have no idea what happened but the baby was fine and the tree....missing half the lights. Tomorrow night I will be braving the crowds and heading to the mall. Hailey asked Santa for a Sleeping Beauty Baby and Target is out....So off the the Disney store. We also discussed his software that he is releasing named "Live Pigeon" which allows the user to push produced videos as "Live" videos on Facebook. Myles:00:00 What's going on and welcome out to another episode of the 60 days living podcast on this episode I have guest Brandon Fisher joining me. He is the owner of fish dog productions which is a video production company. So let's go. All right thank you for joining me for this episode of the 60 days of living pod cast you know Brandon and I sat there and we probably were shooting the breeze for two two and a half hours during this interview and we talked about so many great topics from frugality to hardwork to providing value to networking. And we're going to actually jump right into what brand is telling us his origin story. Brandan:00:41 So for your audience that doesn't know I do video production and I've been doing it now for man almost I think just out over 14 years and that's it's interesting. Like where I got my start doing video because you know I was newly married at the time I was going to Boise State and I was getting a communication degree. Brandan:01:10 What I really liked about it though is I could take video classes. Brandan: 01:13 And we had a really good video program in high school started on VHS surprisingly to those that might not know what that is. So I you know shot on that in high school. Fast forward you know here I'm going to school and you know the video camera that they handed me was this Sony Handycam. Brandan:01:30 And I was like dang man like I want to be professional like anyway so at that moment I was like you know what I wonder if I should just buy my own camera. Brandan: 01:41 And like I said newly married at the time I remember like all of me and my wife's assets together maybe was over$2000 with cars and everything like not very much more names right. Young dumb and maybe that is what I say but it was interesting to me is like I went to her and I was like Hey. So they gave me this camera and it's just not good enough. Which is kind of funny now that I think about it some like hey that's it's crazy to me that what I proposed to her at the time was hey I think I should go buy this camera in her class correct for my class. OK. And that's a hard sell. Yeah. And there was$4000. That's an extremely hard sell. So I was like dang I want to take this serious and this is what I want to do. Brandan:02:33 So at that time I was actually working for a video production company doing live events. They had this particular camera as well and I saw that they were renting it out and I was like man there's an opportunity here. So that's kind of how I pitched it to her that not only can I rent this out but I can use it for my classes. And then I can also do like other projects with it. And so anyway she said yes. Which thank goodness. And I was just told my wife the other day that I feel like that is her gift is the ability to be supportive and. And the reason I share this story with you as well is because it ties into everything with having a supportive spouse someone that believes in you. I told her that if she worked while I went to school that I would make it so that she didn't have to work because her biggest goal in life is to be a stay at home mom and I wanted to be able to support that. Brandan:03:34 So we got married I bought this camera. And it's interesting I was telling miles just just today that I have a word in which is my why and it's provide. And when I got married that was like a huge deal like I was like my goodness I have to provide for my wife I have to make sure that like not only that I have a roof covering her head but that like I need to make sure that I can provide for her. And as our family expand expanded like we you know we had a we had our first child I graduated college and then actually those anyway. Brandan:04:22 The details are OK but where I'm going with it is I graduated first and then we had. Then we had our child. But what was fascinating to me is I graduated with a communication degree. Love taking all these video classes and and again that's just kind of where I got like my star as far as like I wasn't doing anything that was like professional at that level yet but just getting. Of course at the time I thought everything into professional and awesome and just like we sometimes always do right we always do that sometimes our stuff is I think this podcast is great and it is right and it's. But as you started doing stuff more and more that's how you develop your voice that's how you develop what it is that you're doing. Myles: 05:03 And so so I mean when you graduate we first came out of college was your first job. Like in the film or video production industry or did you like take a job doing some job that you weren't passionate about. Brandan: 05:17 So OK so I worked all the way through college at at different like a live audio visual company. And so I did that for about seven years. My job didn't take seven years to graduate. But meaning like I worked all the way through and this might go with your 60 days to living show we cash flow to college. Yeah. I was able to make enough. I worked all the way through. Plus did schooling my wife she worked as well. And I mean man. Brandan:05:50 Just hearing how many people out there have huge huge student loans to Arties to already have that star of not having student loans is like amazing. Myles:06:00 And actually what's funny is just two episodes ago there was one on hardwork and you kind of already there were a few topics in it but it was hard work. And then also being able to convince your wife like putting in the effort into your relationships or your wife then in turn supports you like you talked about like you had a hard sell or selling your wife had to get this$4000 camera. And I think maybe that's where we had to put in that super hard work so then it's reciprocate like OK I'm going to support you in this because you supported me here. And then we also in that episode discussed working all the way through college like the hard work it does put you at such a greater advantage. Now I would say advantage but in a better place because you have different opportunities you can wait wait it out for that job that you wanted have had and take your job right away to pay back the student or you can kind of take your time and find the exact path that you want to take when you're starting off on that right foot without having the student loans. Brandan:06:53 So yes. From there. What ended up happening is I got an opportunity to pitch a company so let me back up some working at this production company. Now the benefit of working so this is why it's awesome to work for other people and think about the things in which the education you can actually be getting at your current job and that you're at. I mean you work in Cleveland I guarantee you're getting a ton of value 100 percent. And anyway it just being around people and things like that. And so what the benefit that I got by working at a production company was I found out how they were charging their clients. And I think at the time they were charging like seventy five dollars an hour and I'm like dang I'm getting paid like 11. So I'm like What the heck. Brandan:07:43 You know after again I was at this company for like five years and it's like you start seeing these numbers and say Man I wish I was making like 75 bucks an hour. Awesome right. So I had the opportunity where I was working with a dental. I had a dental client and they were based out of Seattle. And they said hey we want you to come and film a three day seminar. And I'm like cool. I already have my gear so I know how to charge because this company I'm with. And so I'm like I pitched this this company to do this video project for three days for eight thousand bucks cause I did the numbers and I'm like look this is what my this is what the production company I was working for were charged and I pitched it to them. Brandan:08:34 What they say. Yes. I was like I felt so rich I was like oh my gosh. But at the same time I only had that one that one piece of equipment which was just my camera. So then what I did is I jumped online and I bought eight thousand dollars worth of equipment. OK. And so then all this equipment showed up and I'm like yes. Then I went to Seattle and I did the show and it was totally awesome because. Which is funny actually. I look back on the footage and it was bad. You know over here I'm like I'm pro. This is what I do and it is funny because at the end of the day I think the clients happy and so on. So it's it's all good it's not like I it wasn't a sham or anything. Brandan:09:18 I didn't sell them snake oil. It was a they got what they wanted and they were happy. And then what's crazy is like I kept doing projects for them and it was a thousand dollars here. Another eight thousand dollars here you know and it just. Anyway it was. It was an awesome client to have in all of this stemmed from a$4000 camera but really a supportive wife. Myles:09:43 So Brandon and I continued to talk about the job that he had the opportunities that came along with it. But eventually we got to the point in the story where he ended up getting laid off from this position. And he talked through kind of the hardships that came along with it but then also what he was able to learn and the opportunities that he had after that experience. Brandan:10:02 I Still Remember to this day, December 18th came around and I got a phone call from my boss and it totally totally sucked because I knew that as soon as I was on the phone with them something was up to hear that tone in his voice you could hear the tone and the worst part was I married I have a. I have a son and I'm the sole provider of my family. Brandan:10:28 Right. And December 18th. Andthe reason obviously that date sticks out so prevalent is because that is right before Christmas. And he's like hey man I'm sorry to tell you but like we're going to have to lay you off and I don't know. I don't know if any of your listeners out there have gone through a layoff but that was the biggest thing in my life that I've ever experienced because to me the way in which I look at business is very similar to a relationship. And that like basically this guy's breaking up with me and that like there's nothing I can do I like he's already made up his mind. Yeah. I just had to sit there and accept it. And I think the hardest part was having to walk up stairs and to tell my wife the news that I had just gotten laid off and I'll tell you what man like feeling like an absolute failure as the as the provider of my family right before Christmas like. And the other hard part was I was like I hate to do this but like we can keep presents for the kid the kids and like whatever but like whatever we can take back like let's we need to scale back. And so. So because I had that two and a half year experience are well experienced but like since I worked for them for two and half years. And I was getting if you you could probably. Well anyway I get like$5000 a quarter basically. So 20 extra thousand dollars a year for my rental equipment. So for two and a half years I was getting that. So as you can imagine I wasn't ever taking that money as cash. I was taking that money and I kept buying more and more and more equipment and I bought some stupid stupid crap that I didn't need. But I didn't now. Right. But that is how my business got like kicked off the ground. It's a little bit unique because I don't know how many people have actually built a business working for somebody else like it was a very unique situation. But yet I'm glad that I was smart enough to like invest in myself. Myles:12:49 So like you say that invest in myself. But were you thinking that long term while you're still working for a company where you like at one point I'm going to break away. Were you just getting the equipment to get better at your craft and be better at your job now. Brandan:13:02 Like in fact I actually really liked this company. I liked the I was I like the vision. I liked what they were doing and actually I I still to this day have a passion for dentistry like I love dentistry. I make dental videos still to this day. And my I don't know why but I loved dentistry. I don't know it. To be honest with you if if they were still paying me I would probably still be there and to this day. You know what I mean. Like I do the like but I'm kind of glad it happened just for where I am at today. Myles:13:37 But when that happened I mean you kind of went through it having to go up like probably I can't even imagine that probably one of the worst experience I having to see like look like and you said it like that feeling of man I'm a failure. But you know I think there's always one of two options you can just kind of give up and just go on what you know what it is like welfare and get food stamps. Or was it like. All right. I'm doing this like what. What was that next step for you. Sure Brandan:14:03 So here's the thing that I think is kind of interesting which is that like I think the first step people would probably do is just go on unemployment. Yeah. But I'll be honest I went down and I picked up that packet. They had this huge bold red letters on the front of this packet that said if you do not follow these instructions to the exacty basically you will go to jail. And I'm like I'm not doing this. Yeah. I didn't take any money from anybody. I didn't take money like some people would argue. Well unemployment is technically yours because you've been paying into it for all these years and Beaubois like I didn't want to feel like I was a part of a system why we're in so here's the other thing I looked at how much they were going to pay wasn't very good and you had to do a ton of work. So basically I was looking at them like OK. I have to report if I make any money and then they will deduct that from what I saw anyway. I basically did the math and I was like I can make more money on my own than taking this. And I'm glad that I had that realization and the thing is I'm glad that I've lived this like I would say frugal lifestyle and basically living below our means. But I'll say this I'm so thankful I read that book on true leadership because that had that gave me$5000 in the bank. We dropped my wife's smartphone down to a burner. We cut our lifestyle like you wouldn't believe. What year was this. This was the man so well. So I graduated 2009. This is what would have been probably 2012. OK. So about seven years ago. You know so I didn't tell you this. Maybe I did but I don't think so. So we bought a house. Myles:16:00 You bought the house before or after. Brandan:16:02 Like right before because we've been there for eight years. So I guess you know we lived there for maybe a year and then anyway. Yeah. So it's like so here. And the reason I'm sure in this part of the story is that like. The biggest sting and it's funny because like I can still feel this today which is that like I went through that experience of being laid off feeling rejected by somebody who I had high I looked up to you know it sad because I'm like dang man. Like when I do wrong this guy anyway. So I played that game in my mind for the longest time and the hardest part was I took all my equipment out trying to go out and just hustle. I jumped on Craigslist. I jumped on networking with anyone that I could possibly find and it's interesting because when you have a job you can see opportunities all over the place. But when you're in scarcity it's so much harder to find opportunities. So I ended up couldn't really get a whole lot like like even in the video production industry slows down I think a lot of businesses slow down in the winter. So here we're in you know December I jumped on Craigslist. I sound like a guy who was actually making a zombie film. And I told my wife I said I know this is crazy. But I need to go work on this movie with this guy. And so I don't know why I went and worked on a zombie film. I don't even like zombie films. I do now. But at that time I was like yeah I get that time I was like what I didn't think I'd ever be doing horror as a genre. So anyway basically the reason I tell you this story is I worked on this film for like a month. It's called The End. It's called Amick. I was like what it's not my film but I did do a lot of work on it. And so like I did I shot the film and then I edited the film. So like oh wow. Yes. That's a big big job. It was. But when you're laid off and you don't have anything else to do and you got to work on something that you like. So this kept me busy during the wintertime the kind of the winter months. So the reason I am so sure that that that piece is I really didn't get anything as far as work until about March. So about four four months of just one right in one job the end like there was there were a few like random jobs where I'd maybe get like 125 bucks which is lunch. Or like that's groceries for a week. Right. So it's like. But it's also crazy because I mean if you're looking at like for video production work if I'm able to charge eight thousand bucks a certain clients and now I'm laid off. And now the only thing I'm finding is like I can maybe work on someone's stuff for like 125 bucks like I didn't. Anyway it was it was like devastating. I was like Holy crap how am I going to do this. And so worked on this film. And then again met people networked with other people who are on this film. This little film crew and then I got a few other little gigs here and there and. I got a phone call one day from a guy and he's like hey we're looking to do a video issue. It's about an hour and a half. We'd love to have you come in and film it. Are you interested. Like yeah I'd love to. And he's like hey we want to shoot on these red cameras my red cameras for that. For those of you that don't know a red camera is probably the one of the most expensive cameras that you can buy. You didn't have one didn't have one. They have one now. So you had to go get one. No actually. So I'll tell you why these cameras can go up to like$60000 for a camera just for the camera. That's an RV. Yeah it's. It's ridiculous. So the thing is though they wanted to shoot three cameras on reds right. I'm like we'll tell you what I'm really into these ideas. All our cameras and I would love for you to be able to see these because I don't I think you're going to get the quality you need without going for red. Anyway. So because these guys I ended up doing a three camera shoe and you. No none of them red. All these are correct. So I had a buddy who had one of the cameras. I own two of them. Like I said it was like an hour and a half's worth of work. Mm hmm. And I got 1500 bucks and I was like I'm back. Yes. This is awesome right. And so what's interesting is I did another show I flew somewhere. I was on the airplane and I love flying. The reason I love flying is because it's forced meditation. So I'm sitting there with my thoughts and I'm like All right I have an idea. I really really liked working with these guys. And I met their editor which is crazy then editor there and I talked to him. So I told them to get an idea or an impression came to my mind I'm like I'm this and these guys and email. So as soon as we touched down I sent him an e-mail that said hey I really liked working with you guys. And I know you already have an editor but I would love it if you could come over and just look at my editing suite and I got an e-mail instantly back that said cool we're just wrapping up lunch. We'll be there in 30 minutes. And I'm like holy crap. So what's funny is so I run upstairs to my wife and I'm like code red color red we got everything get this house cleaned cars anyway. And we didn't have time to get into it anyway. Yeah. So I run upstairs and I look in the bathroom and I'm like oh my gosh this place is a mess but I don't have time to freaking get it. So every time I go out of town I love going to hotels where they fold the toilet roll up. So if all I do is I fold the toilet paper in the bathroom correct change out change out the hand towel. And I'm out right and so and I'm we're just we're gathering Yeah stuff. Anyway we're just trying to make this place look somewhat present because I'm not used when clients come over here. Right. So anyway these guys show up and as soon as they walk in the door one of them says Hey can I use your bathroom. Oh my gosh. So I take it so I take the other guy downstairs and we're sitting there and they love my studio space. They're like oh my gosh this is just super cool. And anyway guys comes back. So both of them are down there. We just start chatting and apparently they are working out of a house a mile away. And so they liked my setup. They left and it was interesting on their way back to their office. They gave me a call and I'm like they said OK. Question for you. Who Folded the toilet paper roll in the bathroom. You or your wife. I said I did the craziest thing dude. Kid you not. Because I did that they said because of your attention to detail. We want you to come into our office tomorrow. Dead. No freakin way. Dead serious. What. You know. So I end up go into their office and basically they're like tell you what we really like what you do and we want to hire you out for two months. I know it's a unique story because it's true. It's like. And so basically they invited me they've invited me back the next day I go in there and they say hey we want to hire you out for two months what would that cost. Oh my gosh. Luckily they didn't need an answer right. Yes. So the next day I got over a quote and I came up with the price and I was like all right for two months 20 grand. OK. Now mind you I'm like I'm stressing out a little bit because I'm like I not only do I want to impress these guys but like I don't want to leave money on the table and that's what it would cost for me or my equipment to do all their filming. Do you have all this stuff now mind you. This I believe this was around April April ish. Now had you been. And so my reserves after making my house payments stuff just having that five grand in the bank are like it's like running now. Right. Myles:26:00 And so you're probably just scraping by by now even with burner phones and correct Rahmon correct. So Brandan: 26:06 So I told him I said or they had me come over. Went back to their office. I'm sitting across the table from them and I gave them the quote and they looked it over and they said Do you have a video camera in here or something. Because like that's them the max amount that we are willing to pay for this which is crazy. So in other words I got the$20000 contract. When you can pitch someone a bit of that size and they say yes it's like oh my gosh I feels so good. That's I mean that's people out there that some of their yearly salaries or you know half of your salary. You bet like that. That's huge total. And so I can't even imagine what it's like. That's like me going into my boss's office for the next two months. You're going to triple my pay just so you know like that's crazy man. So what ended up happening is then after the two months they're like hey we would like to go a third. So I ended up in three months working for them getting$30000 a year. Crazy. And what I didn't tell you I guess in the story and sorry I'm not trying to be long winded with this but that I got a job offer or a job offer working for like one of the new stations here in town had weird hours and it was for$30000 a year and I turned it down because you made them three months. But this was before I even got all these guys. And so I was on the fence like do I take this do I not. So I'm sorry that was a little piece of it but. So that right there was like it was amazing in helping me get back on my feet again get confident because you have to realize to me when you get the carpet out from under you it takes time and it sucks. But as soon as you get that confidence back again then liked momentum correct. Oh my. Myles:28:04 I think you just we touch on a few times because of the frugal lifestyle and not like living outside your means. You had the chance to turn down a job where other people would be forced into that not have the opportunity to make 30 grand in three months and then they continue to build upon that momentum because of your wise and Spartan living. You were like you avoided a trap. I think a lot of people fall into and not a lot I would say almost everybody falls into which it sucks and it's sad. But that's why I think one of the reasons for this podcast is to talk about living within your means being frugal and finding ways to make additional money so you can pay for those expenditures that are really necessary. But I just want to bring that up again because you lived in your means you had the can you say no to something that would have pigeonholed you probably. You have that you get that three months 30 K and then I mean did it just continue to build. I mean obviously so I keep working at it but you kind of began the networking. Was it easier from that point or was it still hard or like were clients coming to you or are you still having to go out and find them. What happened after that. Brandan:29:11 So what's interesting is again just networking like I said a guy on Facebook a message list doing what does networking, Yes networking because it really what it comes down to is the reason I'm at where I am at is because of the networks that I've been able to build my radio. I I don't necessarily call it the network but it's more of like I love building relationships with people. Right. And it's all about people and connecting with them and being able to like provide correct. And so I and it's so cool to be able to like so I reach out on Facebook to this guy and I was like hey man this sucks I lost my job. If you know anything let me know. Well his brother apparently owns a business and he's like hey why don't you come. Come in. Some like. OK. So just like from that I did a job for him for like two weeks but I didn't hear back from him. So once this job the$30000 one ended he called me back in the video I worked on with him for two weeks. He pitched to a company he landed a huge contract. And then he was able to bring me on. So then I ended up working for him for like five years. Tracy and I was making more money than I was with the dentist. So anyway so it's cool to see a progression even though it felt like when I got laid off that I was taking this step back. But like because of that traumatic event in my life and I went into hustle mode I was doing anything legal to make money. Brandan:30:49 Yeah. You know as far as like again providing videos just just cranking out as many videos as I could for people doing them for. I look back now in insane deal. They were getting. And I ended up working for Russell actually on the site. Still have that side hustle going. And I'll say this was the coolest part for me was the respect I have for Russell is that he knew like like when he brought me on he knew that we'd be working nights and weekends. But what else is cool is that didn't disrupt what he had going on during the day as well. So I would say the takeaway for me is watching the way in which he works like I love that like the fact that he was or he's probably already making good money at the time but yet he's still working nights and weekends and doing whatever is required to be able to get his business like Wants to where it is today. Myles:31:49 But he still puts in those exact same hours like you bet he's in at 9:00. He leaves at 3:00 not 3:00 p.m.. A.m.. He works insane amount of hours and has the hustle to write like I'm sure he is. You know you can hear his story and it's the same thing he had points in his life where there was no growth and comfort no comfort and growth they had no choice but to grow. Brandan:32:09 So again for your listeners I would just say like again man just find find what you're passionate about. I knew I liked Camors.
