It's a meal that comes together very quickly, especially if you purchase "easy peel shrimp", shrimp that is already headed and deveined. I picked up a loaf of French bread to serve with, so to heat it up, I turned the oven on to 500 F. <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="140" src="; width="200" />
(takes about 15 minutes to heat up to temp), turned the oven off, and placed the loaf in the oven until the shrimp was dished up (5 - 10 minutes). Took the bread out of the oven and cut it up into cubes to sop up that delicious buttery shrimp sauce. Opened a bottle of wine (had a chardonnay on hand), and dinner was done. A nice relaxing evening with a delicious meal. Can't beat that.

Shrimp Tapas

6 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
1 pound medium or large shrimp, peeled and deveined
2 tablespoons chicken broth
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
salt
2 tablespoons minced parsley
Italian or French Bread cut into cubes

Heat the oil, garlic and red pepper flakes in a large, shallow pan. When the garlic just begins to turn golden, add the shrimp and cook over high heat for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Add the broth and lemon juice.

Pour into a large earthenware bowl and sprinkle with salt and parsley. Serve immediately.

Source:; <a href=" Table 2015/09/shrimp-tapas.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Lori (All That Splatters))2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311351389642938250.post-8734095488834157947Thu, 09 Jan 2014 05:15:00 +00002014-01-09T12:52:16.594-06:00Favorites from All That SplattersSeveral of my fellow bloggers are doing, or have done, their top ten posts of 2013. Well, seeing that 2013 was a slow year for All That Splatters, I thought I would come up with the all-time top ten favorite posts of ATS (or what I thought were the top ten favorite posts of ATS). If you disagree with my list, let me know! In no particular order, here we go:

General Tso's Chicken

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
This delicious chicken dish seems to be a popular dish among Pinteresters. All the ingredients can be found with a trip to your local grocery store. Easy enough to make, a batch of rice rounds out this meal. If you haven't tried it yet, do so. You're going to love it!

Jalapeno-Cheese Bread

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="158" width="200" />
Many people shy away from yeast breads. A little flour, a little yeast, a little water, a touch of salt, and a little time is basically all breads need. Need. Hmm. Okay, maybe a little kneading. If you have a heavy-duty stand mixer (like a Kitchenaid), that machine will do most of your kneading. Now, if you are so moved, add something that makes your mouth water. You can add nuts, or dried fruit, or cheese and/or chopped jalapenos. Yum. You've got the makings of the best toast ever. Seriously. Ever. You'll see.

Oven-Roasted Cauliflower, Onions & Garlic

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
I learned a few years ago that if you roast a vegetable, the end-product was like candy. Put a little caramelization on Brussels sprouts, asparagus, eggplant, and I'm a happy girl. Roast some cauliflower with onions and garlic and then finish it off with a tangy little dressing, and I'm in heaven. You will be, too. Trust me on this.

Vanilla Bean Butter-Rum Poundcakes

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
While my chocoholic sisters and brethren enjoy their addiction to the cacao bean, my craving goes towards the other end of the spectrum. I find the aroma of vanilla heady and intoxicating. And if the dessert menu suggests anything with vanilla bean added to it, I'm done. My decision is cemented. With vanilla bean added to the cake and the sauce, these little cakelets are luscious. Absolutely luscious.

Pulled Pork Sandwich

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
One would think that pulled pork always needs to start in a smoker. Or a barbeque grill of some sort. Not so. My trusty crockpot came out of retirement for this version and was I ever glad to give this version a shot. The meat comes out juicy and tender and delicious. Top the meat with a little cole slaw, and you've got a memorable sandwich. I'm telling you - get out your crockpot. You won't be sorry.

Scallops with Chili and Honey

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
Here's an appetizer that's easy and decadent. How often is a recipe described that way? Crispy little wontons, blanketed with sliced green onions (scallions), then layered with juicy scallops that have been caramelized with a bit of a saute and glazed with a sauce of honey and chili. Is your mouth watering yet?

Cloud Souffle

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
This is a pretty and delicious breakfast dish. It's gorgeous enough for guests, and surprisingly easy enough for treating yourself. Serve with asparagus or toast "soldiers". It's wonderful.

Union Square Cafe Bar Nuts

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
You're going to want to make these. And when you do, make sure you double the recipe. They are spicy and sweet, salty and slightly herbacious. One tip: when you add the rosemary, make sure you use fresh. A dear friend of mine used dried rosemary - the full amount called for in the recipe. She thought I had gone out of my mind for recommending this recipe. Use fresh rosemary. You will think you had temporarily lost your mind for not making these sooner. Promise.

Italian Open-Faced Sandwich

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
I came upon the recipe for this open-faced sandwich while watching a PBS cooking show many years ago, long before FoodTV or the Cooking Channel. As I mention in the post, the flavors meld together unbelievably well. You'll be surprised how delicious this is. It's an easy casual week-night, after-work, anytime meal.

Chicken with Garlic & Parsley

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
This is another dish that brings a lot of people to All That Splatters. The recipe calls for few ingredients, and the whole thing is done in less than 1/2 hour. With all that going for it, you'd think this recipe wouldn't have much flavor. But you'd be wrong. It's full of flavor and quite satisfying. Cook up a little rice or pasta as a side, and dinner is done.

BONUS: Apple Cake with Caramel Sauce

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="150" width="200" />
I love caramel. I think I could eat a shoe if it had caramel sauce drizzled over it. That's not to say that the apple cake isn't good. It's really moist and delicious. The caramel sauce, however, puts it over the top. My mother has been making this recipe since I was a kid. It is a winner.

2014/01/favorites-from-all-that-splatters.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Lori (All That Splatters))2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7311351389642938250.post-8782365313801919958Sun, 05 Jan 2014 04:06:00 +00002014-01-04T23:42:51.288-06:00DessertsNutsPiesPecan Pie
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="462" src="; width="640" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

I'm not ready to start my resolution of healthy eating just yet. Pecan pie is my all-time favorite pie, and this recipe is my all-time favorite recipe for pecan pie. The filling is not syrupy but "stands up" on its own. It's super easy though super decadent. If you are willing to indulge one last time before you begin your regimen of grapefruit and salads, this is a great indulgence.

Pecan Pie

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="293" src="; width="400" />

1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
2/3 cup light corn syrup
1 tablespoon flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup pecan halves

Combine sugar, butter, and corn syrup until smooth. Neither had I, but she was ready and willing to introduce this brand to me and my readers. A generous package of coffees, a mini French press and coffee cup arrived shortly. Since Jason, the Director of Creative Services at work, and I often talk coffee, I shared my bounty with him and his family, and the taste-testing began.

While Jason said he picked up on some of the flavor notes described on the packaging, I was content with the comfort a good cup of coffee brings. The coffee is obviously roasted well, apparently a difficult feat for some companies. While I may not pick up on "citrus-y" or "chocolate-y" flavor notes, I often pick up on the flavor of burnt coffee beans. This does not make for a comforting cup of coffee.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="196" src="; width="320" />
While I was appreciative of the bounty I received from Puro, the back-story of this company really got my attention. Tamara sent along the following information. It's a bit lengthy, but full of so much great information, I just couldn't decide what to cull it down to. Here is all the info she sent. There are some wonderful links you will definitely want to explore.

Thank you, Tamara. I'm not sure why I can't seem to take a picture anymore. Lack of practice has a lot to do with it, I'm sure. That and being distracted by the Big Bang Theory rerun that was on tv. I'm rarely home for this show. *sigh* Am I the only one who finally developed an appreciation for this series??)

Back to the dish: I really do love this salad. Evidently it was created to use up a rather tasteless bread. The recipe I based this on has you just tear up the bread. Rather brutish, if you ask me. I prefer to slice Italian or French bread rather thickly, then lightly toast (in the oven or a toaster, your choice). I like the kind of 'crouton-ish' texture of the bread in the salad when it's toasted.

The flavors of the season really come through here. Nice ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and sweet cucumbers just sing summer. An uncomplicated dressing finishes off the dish. Eat it alone for a light lunch or serve it alongside a simply prepared chicken dish, and Roberto's your uncle. :-)

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="240" width="320" />

Panzanella

2 medium to large ripe tomatoes, diced into bite-sized pieces
1 small cucumber, pared and thinly sliced
1 small red onion, thinly sliced
1 cup fresh basil leaves, torn

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
salt & pepper to taste

6 - 8 thick slices of French or Italian bread, lightly toasted, cut into bite-sized pieces

Mix vegetables and basil in a bowl. The days of wanting to try my hand at puff pastry from scratch and recipes utilizing every pot and pan in the kitchen, 42 ingredients, and 2-1/2 days of prep time no longer hold the same sheen they once did. So, when I came upon this recipe via a recent stroll through the land of Foodgawker, I was immediately hooked.

Barb's photos at <a href="; target="_blank">WishfulChef were drool-inspiring. With all the ingredients on hand, my kitchen was soon wafting with the heady aromas of curry, shallots, garlic, and chili powder. And the flavor was comforting and lived up to the anticipation. It was just what I needed on a day when a little Asian comfort food was in order. Thank you, Barb.

Coconut Shrimp Curry
(I tweaked the recipe a little for my tastes, omitting the sweetener used in the original recipe, and halving the milk used in addition to the coconut milk for a little less brothy result.)

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="; width="400" />coconut or canola oil
1 shallot, thinly sliced
1 garlic clove, finely diced
1 tablespoon curry powder
1 cup potatoes, diced into small cubes
1 small can coconut milk(about 6-8 ounces)
1/2 can of milk (use the empty coconut milk can to measure)
8 ounces shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 medium tomato, diced
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1-2 teaspoons chili powder, or to taste
3/4 cup frozen peas
salt and pepper, to taste

In a large pan, heat oil and add curry powder, cook for about two minutes. I had heard of quinoa (say keen-wa) before, I'd even bought some that had been sitting in my pantry for quite a while, but I had never cooked it or eaten it anywhere. A little research revealed that this grain contains more protein than any other grain. One website indicates that there are varieties of quinoa that are more than 20 percent protein, making this grain a boon for vegetarians.

And kale. Touted as one of the world's "super foods", kale has risk-lowering benefits for at least five different types of cancers, including cancer of the bladder, breast, colon, ovary, and prostate<a href=" style="font-size: xx-small;">(1). It comprehensively supports the body's detoxification system. Kale's extremely high vitamin-K content ("one cup of kale provides far more micrograms of vitamin K than any of our 135 World's Healthiest foods"<a href="; target="_blank">(1)) makes it a champion in anti-inflammatory properties.

Whoa.

But does this all taste good??

In a word, Yes.

I love this dish so much, I've made it at least once a week for the last several weeks. In addition to my dinner, the leftovers heat up beautifully, becoming my lunch for the next couple of days. The toasted pine nuts add a bit of crunch, the dried cranberries give it a touch of sweetness, the sauteed shallots give it a tiny bit of caramelization that I just adore. Don't forget the salt... it definitely needs it. And definitely don't forget to thoroughly rinse the quinoa or your dish will have an awfully bitter aftertaste. You can smell the <a href="; target="_blank">saponins on the quinoa. You'll know you've rinsed the grain enough - you won't smell the bitter coating at all any longer.

Thanks to <a href="; target="_blank">Beyond the Plate for this wonderful recipe. I am deeply grateful!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="; width="640" />

Kale, Cranberry and Quinoa Salad
2 cups water
1 cup quinoa, rinsed and drained
2 ounces/ 56 grams pine nuts
1/2 pound/ 260 grams kale
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium shallot (about 2 ounces/50 grams) peeled and thinly sliced
3 ounces/ 85 grams dried cranberries
1 teaspoon chili flakes (optional)
1 teaspoon salt

Combine quinoa and water in a medium saucepan and cook over medium heat until all the water is absorbed, about 15 minutes. Stir the mixture about 10 minutes into cooking to prevent the quinoa from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Set aside.

Toast the pine nuts in a small, dry saute pan over low heat. Watch them carefully so they don't burn. Remove from the heat and reserve.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="; width="400" />

Remove the stems of the kale, then stack the leaves and thinly slice. Finely chop the stems as well.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over moderate heat. Add the shallots and cook until translucent, about 2 minutes. Add the kale and the cranberries, stir, then leave to cook, covered, for about 5 minutes.

Add the pine nuts, chili flakes (if using) and salt, stir and leave to cook again, covered, for another 5 minutes. If the kale starts to stick to the pan, add some water, a tablespoon at a time. (I use a non-stick skillet which eliminates any concern of, um, stickage...)You want just enough moisture to create steam in the skillet, but not too much to give you a sauce.

Toss the kale mixture and quinoa in a medium bowl and serve immediately, or at room temperature. The flooding in Houston is unreal. They're calling it "worse than the worst-case scenario."
The last time I was in Houston, Brays Bayou had hardly any water in it. It was just a huge, mostly empty canal. Now it's overflowed and is flooding Houston.
This storm really is unprecedented. It reminds me a bit of Hurricane Charley, which was supposed to be Cat. 2, but "bombed out" right before hitting Florida, and made landfall as a Category 4. But with Harvey, it's not the winds but the rains that are disastrous.
And they are still predicting the storm will loop out to sea, then back over Houston. CNN is reporting that double the amount of rain they've gotten so far will fall in the next two days.
The Minnesota Twins have three players on the roster from the Houston area. Including Tyler "The Doof" Duffey. He said his neighborhood, the Westbury section of southwest Houston, is holding up well. Jason Castro lives near Rice University, and Robbie Grossman lives downtown. They said some streets have flooded but their homes are okay. Castro grew up in Cypress, which has significant flooding, but says his parents' house is safe.
Houston is calling for boat owners to help out with water rescues, and hundreds have responded. It's like Dunkirk. (Hopefully without the shooting.)

2017/08/harvey.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-3049906206646573642Mon, 21 Aug 2017 23:34:00 +00002017-08-21T19:37:41.863-04:00Paul JanishPaul Janish granted his release

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; width="400" height="281" data-original-width="1280" data-original-height="900" />

Nothing to do with this post, I just like this photo I took of today's eclipse

The Baltimore Orioles announced today that they have <a href=" Paul Janish his release from the AAA Norfolk Tides. Previously, they had said he would play out his contract, including through the end of MLB season if needed. But I guess they don't need him any more, with Ruben Tejada outrighted to Norfolk and JJ Hardy there on rehab assignment. And, sadly, the Orioles are playing so poorly they are unlikely to need to call up anyone for the stretch run or the post-season, no matter what happens.
Paul said he couldn't wait to start at Rice, so this is probably good news for him.
He's had quite a career. A lot of players were drafted out of Rice that year. Janish has lasted longer than any of them.
Jeff Niemann (#4 overall) was probably the most successful of the lot, by money earned and Wins Above Replacement, but he had just a 7 year career. First rounder (#3 overall) Phil Humber played 10 years (and had that perfect game). First round pick Wade Townsend didn't sign that year and ended up playing just 5 years (the last year in independent ball) and never made it to the big leagues (shoulder injury). Fourth rounder Josh Baker played only three years and never made it out of A-ball. Tenth rounder Chris Kolkhorst played two years, peaking in high-A.
Paul Janish is retiring with 14 years in pro baseball, including parts of 9 seasons in the big leagues. Quite an accomplishment.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; width="400" height="281" data-original-width="1280" data-original-height="900" />

2017/08/paul-janish-granted-his-release.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-6672200680110638656Wed, 16 Aug 2017 02:09:00 +00002017-08-15T22:09:56.290-04:00Paul JanishCalling it a career

Some links to articles about Paul Janish's retirement announcement...
<a href=" infielder Paul Janish will retire after season, take coaching job
“I have a lot of vested interest in Rice, and having the opportunity to coach under him, it’s just a pretty cool deal,” Janish said Saturday from Rochester, N.Y., where the Tides were scheduled to play the third game of a four-game series. “And being able to do it at home, where I’m from and stuff – a lot of stars aligned, to be honest with you. It’s just the right time to do it.
“The only complication, really, was that I’m still playing. But at this point in my career, it’s pretty clear to me with this opportunity being presented what’s supposed to happen.”
...Janish’s career .983 fielding percentage in the big leagues has helped establish his reputation as one of the game’s most sure-handed shortstops. His friendly, approachable demeanor has made him a clubhouse favorite among teammates and the media.
...“Paul has got strong leadership qualities and that will definitely help, and of course his character is impeccable,” Graham said in a statement. “I think it’s all good. It’s an all-win situation. We’re really happy to have him, and I think the Rice community will be real happy to have him.”

<a href=" Tides shortstop Paul Janish to retire, join Rice University coaching staff
“I am of course very happy to have Paul come back home to Rice and join the coaching staff,” said coach Graham, who in 2017 completed his 26th season at the helm of the Owl program. “Paul has always had high character and I think he will be a great teacher and coach.
“He was a team captain for us in (the national championship season of) 2003,” Graham explained. “For all the talented players we had on that team, I am not certain we still could have won the national championship without Paul Janish at shortstop. He was a great player and great leader. His leadership qualities are among the reasons we first recruited him, well before 2003.
“I don’t think I could ask for a better transition of going from playing to the next chapter,” Janish said. “I have long kept in touch with coach Graham and always tried to visit when I have been in town. Now having a chance to come back and coach at Rice, under coach Graham, is very important to me. There are a lot of things that had to align for this to happen, and I am very thankful. I cannot wait to begin.”
Wayne Graham also tells the story about the last time he was ejected from a game...when Janish was playing for him.
“I will add that the last time for me to be ejected from a game (in 2003) was for arguing with an umpire when Paul was called out on strikes,” Graham recalled. “I was thrown out of a game because I have always been a big believer in his judgement.”

<a href=" to retire
"He’s a quality human being. His priorities are a good husband, a good father, and then try to be a good shortstop," [Buck] Showalter said. "He’s got things in order."
That last bit reminds me of one of Janish's former teammates, Bronson Arroyo. Arroyo's first priority was always baseball. But now his rubber arm has finally given out. He's 40 years old, and doesn't expect to come off the 60-day DL. He knows his career is over. Like Janish, he will be retiring after this season. Unlike Janish, he doesn't want to be a coach, though it sounds like they would welcome him if he did. He's ready for <a href=" beyond baseball.
He’s ready for his second chapter. He said he’ll pop back into the baseball world every so often, but he wants to catch up with the people he’s missed the last two decades.
“The ride the last 22 years, it was my life’s work. It’s what I set out to do, man,” he said. “Like I tell people, if my body would hold up as if I was a 30-year-old guy for the next 50 years in this game, I’d probably continue to pitch. And then you’d look around and all your friends would be dead and you would have done nothing else but play this game.
“In a lot of ways, the exit from this is an opportunity to enjoy the millions of other things that are out in the world.”
Arroyo used to tell young players to simplify their lives, so they could concentrate on baseball. Unlike many players, he never bought a big mansion. He lived in a small apartment, so he wouldn't have to worry about maintaining a house. He never married or had children, seeing them as a distraction he could not afford.
There's a lot of sacrifice involved in a career in baseball. Maybe it's good that it doesn't last forever.

2017/08/calling-it-career.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-4353160759654870138Tue, 15 Aug 2017 05:36:00 +00002017-08-15T01:36:56.126-04:00Rochester

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; width="400" height="266" data-original-width="870" data-original-height="579" />

The High Falls in Rochester, NY

There's a pretty waterfall in downtown Rochester, NY. The Genesee High Falls. It used to power their industry back in the day. Now it’s a park. An old railroad bridge has been made into a pedestrian bridge that you can view the falls from.
Anyway, it’s pretty close to Frontier Field. Walking distance. And there’s a parking garage between Frontier Field and the falls. Parking is free in the garage (at least on weekends - not sure about evenings). You can pay $6 to park across the street from the ballpark, but I recommend parking in the city garage for free instead, and stopping off to see the falls.
I went to scenic Rochester, NY to see Tides play the Red Wings. (That's the Rochester Red Wings, the Twins' AAA team, not the hockey team.)
Janish made a really nice play Saturday night, laying out to rob Twins top prospect (and IL player of the month) Zack Granite of a hit. Holding up the ball so the umpire can see he made the catch:
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; width="400" height="281" data-original-width="1280" data-original-height="900" />

I wanted to get a nice shot of him on defense, seeing as it’s probably my last chance. He’s been talking about the end of his playing career for awhile now. I was planning to go see the Tides in Rochester this weekend, in part because I suspected it might be my last chance to see him play.
But I am surprised he's returning to Rice. I was expecting him to join the Baltimore Orioles minor league coaching staff. Buck Showalter said he wanted Janish as a coach when he retired, and Janish seemed happy at the idea. I guess Rice would be a more appealing option to a guy with three little kids. Less travel, and family around to help out.
I am disappointed that it's looking like Janish won't be on the big league roster for Player's Weekend. I wonder what name he would choose? Maybe "Soft-J," the nickname given to him in Cincinnati?
Tony Cingrani, now a Dodger, is going with "Grani." Tyler Duffey is "The Doof." Brock Holt is "Brock Star." Anthony Rendon is "Ant." With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, he hit a blooper over the second baseman to drive in the winning run, sending his former team, the Louisville Bats, to defeat.
They interviewed him yesterday before the game. They asked him if he felt any pressure, coming to bat in the bottom of the 9th with the game on the line. His response was, "Nah, I just didn't want to play extra innings."
The announcers loved that answer, but I guess the baseball gods were not amused. The game after that interview went 16 innings. Both teams ended up using position players as pitchers. (Not Janish, alas.) Hernan Iribarren pitched three shutout innings for Louisville. Jesus Montero (yes, the former Yankees catching prospect) pitched the last inning for the Tides, and took the loss.
Janish did not play in today's day game. He probably wouldn't have anyway, it being a day game after a night game, but after 16 innings, I'd have been really shocked if they started him again.
And it's possible he'll get another call up tomorrow. Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy was hit by a pitch on his wrist in today's Orioles game, and the x-rays are reportedly "not good."
Hardy is likely headed to the DL. They could let Ruben Tejada make most of the starts at SS, or they might move Manny Machado to SS and let Tejada cover 3B. In any case, they'll need another backup infielder. It could be Janish getting the call, or another Norfolk player. Luis Sardinas is another possibility, though Janish has hit better and is better on defense. Johnny Giavotella has hit very well in Norfolk, but his glove is so bad it almost cost him his spot on the Tides during spring training.
Another possibility is that they'll call up Pedro Alvarez to play 3B if Machado moves to SS. Alvarez has been in a deep slump this season, and his glove is so bad the O's are trying to transition him to right field. But El Toro has an opt out clause, and the O's may be reluctant to lose him.
Hoping it's Janish...

2017/06/karma.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-4293258181836383526Tue, 06 Jun 2017 21:30:00 +00002017-06-06T17:31:36.288-04:00Paul JanishTony CingraniOrioles DFA Paul Janish

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; width="400" height="267" data-original-width="1200" data-original-height="800" />

Former Braves teammates Paul Janish and Chris Johnson at an O's spring training game

Well, I have to say, I wasn't expecting this. Paul Janish was called up by the Orioles about three weeks ago, when utility infielder Ryan Flaherty went on the DL with shoulder inflammation. I figured his roster spot was safe until Flaherty came off the DL.
But the O's had other plans. They acquired Ruben Tejada from the Yankees, two days ago. They announced he was being assigned to AAA, but today purchased his contract and designated Janish for assignment.
Janish has had all of five at-bats in his three weeks with the O's this year, so it seems odd that they would even bother to switch utility infielders.
Unless they are hoping Tejada can be more than a utility infielder. JJ Hardy has been really struggling this year. And it's the last year of his contract. Baltimore may be hoping Tejada can be the starting SS, at least part of the time.
Janish can refuse a minor league assignment and elect free agency if he clears waivers, but I expect he will report to Norfolk. He has in previous years, and this year, he's moved his family to Norfolk. It sounds like the Orioles have offered him a coaching job once his playing days are done.
Here's a short interview MASN did with Janish last weekend.

<iframe width="640" height="360" src="; frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

He talks about finishing his Rice degree, interning in real estate, and wanting to stay in the game even after he retires from playing. And about what a great experience winning the CWS was, and how he's still good friends with the guys he played with back then. (He said that when he was in Cincinnati, too: that winning the CWS with Rice was the best experience he ever had in baseball, because they won it all.)
Roch Kubatko had another <a href="; with Janish the other day, that was kind funny. Janish said he wanted to be the emergency catcher and the disaster relief pitcher (roles he filled in Cincinnati). Kubatko warned him it could be dangerous. The O’s have had to put two catchers on the DL with...um...testicular injuries. Janish said he’d be okay, because with two boys and a girl, he’s not planning on having any more kids.
Good ol’ Janny, always ready to take one for the team. Maybe he'll get called up again later this year.
Meanwhile, the Reds activated Tony Cingrani today. He's been on the DL for a couple of months with an oblique injury. The Reds have given up on Cingrani starting; he's just not durable enough. But he's been solid out of the pen, at least when healthy.
2017/06/orioles-dfa-paul-janish.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-8815058002390698646Tue, 06 Sep 2016 01:46:00 +00002016-09-05T21:46:02.092-04:00Baltimore OriolesPaul JanishClosing Day

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; width="300" height="400" />

Paul Janish turns a double play for the Norfolk Tides

If the first game of the season is on opening day, then the last game must be on closing day, right? Today is "closing day" for AAA. There's still the postseason for teams that have made it, but for most minor leaguers, the season is over.
Unless they get called up to the big leagues. The Orioles say they are still considering <a href=" up Paul Janish. They seem to really like him, but they're facing a bit of a roster crunch, and they have other needs. Lots and lots of other needs.
If they don't call Janish up tomorrow, I assume they will send him to <a href="; to work out with the other players they are keeping warm on the backburner in case they are needed. He got a hit in his first at-bat the other day, and made a nice diving grab.
Today was even better. He wasn't even supposed to be in the lineup, but ended up subbed in when the CFer was injured. (No, he didn't play CF. They moved the SS to 1B and 1B to CF, which meant they needed a SS.) He was the only Oriole to get a hit off Yordano Ventura - and he got two of them.
Not to mention his usual sparkling defense, like this <a href=" needed double play, and this <a href=" catch.
J.J. Hardy has really struggled this year, probably due to injury. His wRC+ is just 52. Janish won't continue batting .500, but even if he doesn't hit a lick, his defense might make him the better choice. He's opening up some eyes in Baltimore, that's for sure.
He'll likely play in the next two games in Texas, with lefties as the probable pitchers.
2015/08/off-to-good-start.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-1944167309494082626Tue, 25 Aug 2015 23:05:00 +00002015-08-25T19:05:15.521-04:00Janish gets the call

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

With J.J. He'll be starting at SS tonight and batting ninth. He's been given number 15.
It sounds like he'll start only against lefties. Lefty Ryan Flaherty will start against righties.
Showalter really likes Janish, though. He does not seem happy about this. I think he really wanted to be a starter.
But his heavy reliance on his fastball has raised red flags for many. Not to mention his recurring shoulder issues. I think there's some concern that if he pitches multiple innings, fatigue will increase his risk of injury.
Meanwhile, former Red Paul Janish has healed much faster than anticipated. He played in a minor league game last weekend, and DH'd in the "B" game yesterday.
He's DHing because the Orioles didn't want him to throw across the diamond yet. There was some talk of using him at 1B, where he wouldn't have to throw as far. Though he's now throwing 120 feet, so if he's not ready now, he's close.
2015/03/cingrani-to-pen.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-6560887979705010044Thu, 05 Mar 2015 13:04:00 +00002015-03-05T22:22:37.495-05:00Paul JanishTony CingraniSpring Training

Sure doesn't feel like spring yet here in the northeast, but spring training is underway in Arizona and Florida.
Paul Janish hasn't played in a game yet. He had surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow last month. He's hitting off tee and just started fielding grounders. He can't throw yet. He's hoping to get into an actual game March 20 or 21, but admits that's optimistic.
Haven't seen Tony Cingrani yet, either. Not sure if he's injured or just hasn't gotten into a game yet. He's supposedly being considered as a starter, but might end up in the pen.
He did give up a home run to Billy Hamilton in batting practice, so he is pitching.
Update: Cingrani is starting tomorrow (Friday). That means he'll be back at Ed Smith Stadium, formerly the spring training home of the Reds before they decamped for Arizona.
Supposedly, the Orioles wanted a veteran shortstop to work with their young pitchers in Norfolk. Janish also has a chance to make the team as a utility guy.
The Orioles have a reputation for shuffling the roster constantly, even calling up and sending down players who are out of options (asking them to decline if claimed by other teams). So even if Janish doesn't make the roster out of spring training, he probably has a better chance of being called up with Baltimore than with KC and Colorado last year.
And if he does end up a Norfolk Tide, that's convenient for me. I see a lot more IL games than PCL.
2014/11/janish-signs-with-orioles.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-7327318399820983211Thu, 25 Sep 2014 01:37:00 +00002014-09-24T21:37:54.741-04:00Paul JanishDown to the wire

The Royals called up just one player when the Omaha Storm Chasers' season ended: pitcher Tim Collins.
Looks like they are still hoping Christian Colon recovers in time for the post-season.

Christian Colon flew to Arizona to test his broken finger in Instrux. I did recognize him this photo, #21, front and center.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

George Grande and Jim Kaat called the game for NBC. Grande is a Reds announcer, so he was pretty familiar with Paul Janish. He said some nice things about him. According to him, the Storm Chasers had the worse defense in the league until Janish came on board. They ended up solidly in the middle of the pack. (Hey, one man can only do so much.) He also said the Storm Chasers manager pointed to Brian Bocock and Paul Janish when asked who the leaders in the clubhouse were.
FWIW...the Royals put backup SS Christian Colon on the 15-day DL yesterday. The timing seems a bit odd. He broke his finger 10 days ago. With the expanded rosters, there's no need to DL him if they want to call up someone else. The only reason to put him on the DL is to substitute someone else for the postseason roster...someone who was not on the 25 man roster on Aug. 31.
They could have waited until they actually had to set the postseason roster, so it's still a little odd. I think what this means is that they don't think he'll be healthy enough to play this year. Also, DLing him the day after Omaha's season ended suggests that they're considering calling up someone from the AAA team.
The Royals have not called up anyone to replace Colon yet. Today's an off day for them, so they might not make a move until tomorrow. Assuming they even make a move.
In other news, Bryan Price thinks Tony Cingrani's role might be <a href=" the pen next year.

"I think the more he starts, the more it becomes apparent that he definitely needs to improve the breaking ball and the change-up or he'll be better served pitching out of the bullpen."

Ugh. I'm afraid they're going to do the same thing with him that they did with Aroldis Chapman. The Reds see next year as their window. In the long run, they might be better off letting Cingrani perfect his secondary pitches in AAA, but they're in "win now" mode and don't have time for that.
2014/09/omaha-wins-aaa-championship.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (BubbaFan)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28166305.post-7614259213435494881Mon, 15 Sep 2014 23:25:00 +00002014-09-15T19:29:18.965-04:00Paul JanishOmaha wins PCL Championship

<a href="; title="2014 / Minda Haas by Minda Haas, on Flickr"><img src="; width="500" height="333" alt="2014 / Minda Haas">

Both the IL and the PCL went the distance this year. Omaha won Game 5 yesterday, so they are PCL champions for the second year in a row.
The announcers noted that Janish had been on the Rice team that won the College World Series in Omaha eleven years ago.
There's one more game: the one-game PCL vs. IL championship, played in Charlotte, NC this year. That's tomorrow night.
As for whether Janish will be called up after Omaha's season is done...I haven't a clue. They could definitely use some infield depth in Kansas City, but Ciriaco might get the call, rather than Janish. It's also possible they'll try to stick with Colon, broken finger and all.
If I were the GM, I'd pick Janish. But then, if I were the GM, I wouldn't have let the team go without a backup SS for most of the season. Anyways, Janish has a better glove; Ciriaco's been a better hitter, but not that much better. But Ciriaco was called up when rosters expanded last year, and that's probably an advantage. They know him.
It might be moot, anyway. The Royals are collapsing, and are in danger of missing the postseason. I feel so sorry for their fans. They got their hopes us this year. If they are dashed, it's going to be ugly. My guest on this episode of The Decision-Making Studio is Bruna De Palo, author of The Brain Instruction Manual for Leaders: What Nobody Told You About Working with Humans. Bruna's book is about neuroscience and leadership, but our conversation ranges much more widely into how the brain shapes judgement, behaviour and decision-making. We talk about why the idea of "taking emotion out of a decision" makes very little sense; how our brains use past experience, habits and mental shortcuts to predict what happens next; and how those same processes can also create biases and constrain the options we see. We explore the brain as a predictive system — one that is constantly trying to anticipate what will happen and allocate our limited energy accordingly. That leads us into Bruna's idea of the "box": the accumulated experiences and assumptions our brains draw upon to make sense of what is happening around us. We also explore why uncertainty is so demanding for the brain and what that means when we ask people to navigate significant change. And we look at what psychological safety actually means when people need to speak up, disagree and challenge decisions. If our brains are continually scanning their environment for threat, creating the conditions in which people genuinely feel able to contribute becomes far more than a nice cultural aspiration. There is some good news too. Neuroplasticity means that deeply ingrained patterns of thought and behaviour are not necessarily permanent. We discuss habits, learning and how new neural pathways develop — and what this might tell us about actually changing behaviour rather than simply knowing what we ought to do. Along the way we get into emotion as data, resistance to change, prediction, bias, stress and flow — including a wonderful example involving Diego Maradona. In this episode (00:00:00) Introduction (00:03:14) Bruna De Palo, neuroscience and understanding human behaviour (00:09:26) The predictive brain, energy and the "box" (00:21:08) Why we can't take emotion out of decision-making (00:33:26) Psychological safety, conflict and speaking up (00:46:49) Change, uncertainty, neuroplasticity and changing behaviour (00:57:45) Diego Maradona, stress and the state of flow Show Notes Bruna De Palo — neuroscience-based executive and team coach, author and advisor. Bruna De Palo – official website The Brain Instruction Manual for Leaders: What Nobody Told You About Working with Humans — Bruna De Palo A practical exploration of how neuroscience can help us understand behaviour, stress, emotion, change, performance and decision-making. The Brain Instruction Manual for Leaders – official book website The Brain Instruction Manual for Leaders – John Murray Press People, books and resources mentioned Lisa Feldman Barrett — How Emotions Are Made: The Secret Life of the Brain Bruna discusses Barrett's work on emotion and the relationship between bodily signals, previous experience, context and the brain's predictions. How Emotions Are Made – Lisa Feldman Barrett Amy C. Edmondson — psychological safety Referenced in our discussion about speaking up, disagreement, interpersonal risk and creating conditions in which people feel able to challenge decisions. Amy C. Edmondson – Psychological Safety Norman Doidge — The Brain That Changes Itself Discussed in relation to neuroplasticity: how experience and repeated behaviour can change neural pathways and established patterns. The Brain That Changes Itself – Penguin The Brain Instruction Manual for Leaders — Extras, links and resources Bruna's companion resource library contains the research, videos and additional material referenced throughout the book. Book Extras & Resources Diego Maradona — Napoli v Bayern Munich, 1989 The famous warm-up discussed near the end of the episode, before Napoli's UEFA Cup semi-final second leg against Bayern Munich. And what if more of those failures are avoidable than we think? There is an enormous mythology around start-ups. Perhaps the biggest is the often-repeated claim that 90% of them fail — as if failure is simply the natural, almost inevitable price of trying to build something new. My guest on this episode of The Decision-Making Studio Podcast is Dr Bernard Bulkin OBE. Bernie spent more than two decades in venture capital, investing in Silicon Valley and London. He's been an angel investor, a founder and a company leader, and has served on boards ranging from start-ups to large public companies. He's also an Emeritus Professorial Fellow at the University of Cambridge and has served as a Vice President of the Energy Institute. And, as his biography rather refreshingly points out, he has also founded, led and invested in companies that have failed. His book is Why Start-Ups Fail: Avoiding the Traps on the Path to Commercial Success. And I think it's a rather counter-cultural business book. Bernie's argument is not that start-ups don't fail. Of course they do. It's that many of the reasons they fail are understandable, and, crucially, avoidable. If you're a founder, or thinking about starting a business, Bernie offers something approaching a masterclass here in why start-ups fail and what can be done differently. But this isn't really a business podcast. The Decision-Making Studio is about decisions and uncertainty. And what interested me in Bernie's work is what happens when you look beneath the start-up context. We talk about engineers and the particular ways they can think about businesses. We talk about money, and why most start-ups need more than they think they do. We get into behavioural science, myths and assumptions, and self-awareness: understanding yourself, your own limitations, and the role that plays in the decisions you make. So yes, this is something of a masterclass in start-ups. But it's also a conversation about something much broader: why failure is not always inevitable, how our own thinking can help create it, and whether, by understanding the traps we repeatedly fall into, we might make better decisions. In start-ups, certainly. But well beyond them too. In this episode (00:03:00) Why do start-ups fail? (00:10:00) The 'horrible premise' of a business based on failure (00:21:00) Why start-up failure is not inevitable (00:32:00) Engineers, founders and ways of thinking (00:44:00) Money, investment and the power law (00:56:00) Behavioural science, judgement and the Theranos case (01:09:00) Self-awareness and better decision-making Chapter timings are approximate. Not just any phrases, but aphorisms – those short sentences with the power to stop us in our tracks, cause us to rethink how we see things, and even make better decisions. I'm joined by James Geary, author of the newly re-released book, The World in a Phrase: A Brief History of the Aphorism. James is a lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School. James is also a self-confessed 'aphorism addict', and he studied the history of what he calls the world's oldest written art form. As you will hear, aphorisms transcend culture and historical periods. And James's work and this conversation refer to the likes of Lao Tzu, the ancient Greeks, through to Mark Twain, and modern figures like Wynton Marsalis and Brian Eno. From a decision-making lens, aphorisms have potency as heuristics. When we think about modern challenges, James explains that they can help us so very much, particularly as AI is taking over the written word and threatening to reduce our cognitive load to zero. And of course, this is very topical. I am honour to welcome Michael Posner to the show. Michael is the director of the Centre for Business and Human Rights at New York University's Stern School of Business. He is a human rights lawyer, and he was Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour under the Obama administration. He is the author of a new book, Conscience Incorporated: Pursue Profits While Protecting Human Rights, which, given the state of things in the world and the United States, is pretty timely and important. Michael covers a ton of ground here, from the primacy of shareholder capitalism, how to make decisions in a world comprised of competing expectations and trade-offs, the tensions associated with decisions around human rights and environmental concerns, when CEOs should speak up, and his thoughts on the Trump administration and what's happening with regard to the United States' role in the world and to democracy and human rights. At its top was a bearded and long-haired head:

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="500" height="320" src="; width="320" />

In the intervening years, I've looked at that head and thought that it fell short of the look that I was trying to achieve. And so I recently decided to paint a more authentic term, using Homer, the Greek poet of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Here's a wonderful depiction of him by the French artist, William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905):

Wikimedia Commons

And below is the revised mural term.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="760" data-original-width="500" src="; />

* Of the Nine Muses in Greek mythology, there is actually no muse of sculpture.

2026/06/putting-homer-into-pompeii-mural.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Mark D. I admired its composition, shadowy effect, and especially the blue facial shadows! It has certain qualities that remind me of Rembrandt, and I've come to think of it as "my little Rembrandt." I also thought it needed at special frame.

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="584" data-original-width="500" src="; />
My inspiration was this Renaissance frame that probably dates from the 1400s. I liked that it's primarily one color because I didn't want to detract from the image, especially since it's a rather small painting.

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="522" data-original-width="500" src="; />

My plan was to build a simple frame and then adhere veneers with lasered patterns and columns designs. The first step, though, was making the inner frame, here shown as gold.

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="291" data-original-width="500" src="; />

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="555" data-original-width="500" height="400" src="; width="360" />

I found an old, blue frame in a thrift store, and my brother Cliff re-cut it to fit the painting. Next, I searched the internet and found a wonderful pattern for the horizontals, which I'll call the header and footer.

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="248" data-original-width="500" src="; />

Then I designed the capital for the two columns:

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="381" data-original-width="481" height="158" src="; width="200" />

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="514" data-original-width="500" height="400" src="; width="389" />
In the final product, the veneer was first painted gold, then the black of the design was burned into it by the laser, while the laser skipped whatever was white, leaving a gold design, like this:

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="560" data-original-width="500" height="400" src="; width="357" />

It was less time-consuming to laser the column horizontally:

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="106" data-original-width="500" height="85" src="; width="400" />

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="447" data-original-width="463" src="; />

Here's my good friend Richard Radice, laser-cutting the veneers. He's constructed a box to contain the laser, and notice that he shields his eyes to even take a peek at the progress.

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="582" data-original-width="500" height="400" src="; width="344" />

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="491" data-original-width="450" src="; />

Meanwhile, my brother Cliff was helping me by constructing the "under frame." Because I was concerned that glue would get on the lasered veneers, I devised supports for the mouldings so that they would cantilever over the veneers, as shown below.

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="500" src="; />

And here's the finished frame:

&

the All Time Baseball Header

<a href=" History - includes raw data of every season we have info on, career and single season leader boards, season by season capsules, and a running record of owner data (team names, records, draft slot, etc)

<a href=" Rules - self explanatory

<a href=" FAQ - Probably only for the die-hards out there, but here is all the pertinent information about the DMB game engine from the DMB help files. For example, how the following works: Pitching Charts, Fatigue, Tendencies, Weather, etc.)

<a href=" Resources - mostly only needed on draft day, here you will find eligible players, park lists, rating files, etc.
