I'm SURE it was because either &nbsp;1) I didn't REALLY read the book all the way; &nbsp;2) I tried to skip all the stamina building in all areas but "Read to Self"; &nbsp;3) I was freaking out because I didn't have anything to grade and how in the heck was going to make sure those sweet kiddos were actually working; &nbsp;or &nbsp;4) I just skipped all the teaching of behaviors and just jumped right in. &nbsp;My frustration with Daily 5 could have been any on of those reasons OR most likely, all of them. &nbsp;You see I am a bit of a control freak. &nbsp;I am aware that this is a huge flaw? &nbsp;I still met with individuals and groups, but everyone else would be doing "must do's", silent reading, or AR quizzes. &nbsp;As far as making sure everyone was working--well some students wouldn't even finish their "must do" or would forget to turn it in, so that was a headache in itself.<br /> <div> <br /></div> <div> A very good friend who also teaches 2nd grade did the Daily 5 this past year--the right way. &nbsp;By the time Thanksgiving rolled around she was loving it! &nbsp;I was already bored and stressed out over my reading block. &nbsp;So...I vow to stick with the Daily 5 unless my principal tells me I need to be doing something different. &nbsp;I'm hoping that not doing so much prep and grading for my reading block is going to relax me, therefore I will enjoy my ELAR as much as my Math &amp; &nbsp;There is are 2 parts that are a bit time consuming on the part of the teacher. &nbsp;1. &nbsp;The "final" writing and illustration needs to be done on the special paper provided by the company. &nbsp;It's a glossy paper, so it needs to be written on with markers. &nbsp;Because I have 2nd graders, I have them write their finished product with pencil and then I go over each one with a black, thin marker. &nbsp;After they finish their illustrations, I also go back with the same marker and outline some of the objects just to make them stand out a little more. &nbsp;2. &nbsp;In order for the correct picture and writing to be side-by-side, the student's drawing has to be on the back of another student's writing. &nbsp;No matter how many times I model and say this, I still hear a lot of, "This isn't my paper!" &nbsp;or "I have Sophie's! This supervision is in addition to my teaching hours. It can occur before school, during recess, lunch break or after school. </span><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Many teachers complain about supervision duty, but in reality it has many benefits.</span></span><br /> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">1. </span><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Free exercise</span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. Yes, we are getting paid to exercise. What else would you call walking continual laps around the school yard for 20 or 30 minutes at a time? </span></span><br /> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">2. </span><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Staff Fitness Competitions</span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. Have a staff fitness challenge and monitor daily steps. </span></span><br /> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">3. </span><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Feel Like A Sheriff</span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">. I don’t know why, but when I don my fluorescent orange and yellow safety vest (a requirement when on supervision duty) and put my Fox 40 whistle around my neck it alludes power. I feel like I am a sheriff maintaining order and control in the wild west (OK well I do let my imagination have some fun)</span></span><br /> <div dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">4. </span><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Fabric Research.</span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> What better way to wind and cold test fabrics than yard duty in below zero weather? You learn quite fast what not to wear on yard duty. Style is NOT an option. No one wants to teach with frostbite. </span></span></div> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">5. </span><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Food Trends.</span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> Food bloggers and writers - if you want to see what children and teens like to eat - just ask a teacher. They will tell you the latest lunch trends. We also see what gets thrown into the garbage and green bin as well as packed up to go back home. </span></span><br /> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">6. </span><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Reconnecting With Colleagues.</span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> My school is huge. There are teachers that I do not see on a daily basis because they do not teach in my hallway or on my floor. When we are assigned supervision duty together, I get to briefly acknowledge them as we pass by each other on the school yard or in the hall.</span></span><br /> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">7. </span><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Realizing That Primary Teachers Are Heroes.</span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> As a middle school teacher in a K-8 building, some years I get given Kindergarten or Primary duty. After 20 minutes on duty, I have answered more questions than during a full week in any Grade 7 or 8 classroom, administered friendship advice and ensured that every child is properly dressed for the weather. Frankly, I am exhausted. I don’t know how my friends who teach primary students do this all-day-long. They must have secret superhero powers. </span></span><br /> <span style="color: black; font-family: inherit; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></span> <span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: black; font-weight: 700; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Bonus Benefit: </span><span style="color: black; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Meeting Future Students. On a serious note, my one favourite things about supervision duty is meeting future students. Supervision has helped me get to know students before they become students in one of my classes. Building this connection ahead of time has helped me with classroom management. (I'm a HUGE fan of handprint art!)<br /> I'm sure you're aware of the freezing cold temperatures that are going around and today was no exception. I woke up with a killer sore throat, knew I didn't want to do much so decided today was the day for our handprint project.<br /> I raided my scrapbook papers and I just happened to have a 16X20 frame that I picked up at the Goodwill for $2.99. (don't you just LOVE the Goodwill??) I grabbed a piece of posterboard from the Dollar Tree to use as the background and the rest of my handy tools.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" /></a></div> I grabbed several shades of green so the girls could have their choice, plus I originally intended for the picture to have my husband's and my handprint but ended up not having enough room for all 4. I needed red paint for their fingerprint hearts, but all I had was watercolors. I was afraid that would be too watery and make my paper bubble and wave.&nbsp; So I ended up taking a red WASHABLE marker and rubbing it on their fingers! LOL&nbsp; Worked just fine and was super easy to clean up when we were done. I wish I had thought to put some green paper below for grass or something but alas, I didn't.&nbsp; I had some scrapbook paper that was covered in glittered clouds so I decided to cut a few of them out and add them above for a sky.<br /> And here's our finished project. We live way out in the country and had plenty of rain for a week straight before the party so we were comfortable releasing them. We could actually see them flicker out and fade before they went very far. Such a great way to end the night!<br /> <br /> And yet another year, another party is done. I love seeing all my hard work and planning come together and I love even more seeing my little girl's eyes light up with delight. This is our last year "together" since next year she'll be starting kindergarten and gone most of the day. Oh my word it's delicious!&nbsp; Well, this year for my daughter's 5th birthday I made a beautiful purple rosette ombre cake that was TDF.&nbsp; I decided I wanted to make my Mom one for her birthday, but in her favorite color; PINK!! And who doesn't love pink?<br /> I did some research on these cakes before my daughter's party and came across a photo by <a href="; target="_blank">Beantown Baker</a> who gives a wonderful description on how to make this cake. I believe she has a Youtube video as well, but I was good to go with just her photos/descriptions.&nbsp; I made a regular white box Duncan Hines cake mix that I tinted in 3 layers, as well as the frosted rosettes for icing. And I'm SO happy with how they turned out and they look exactly like each of my girls (that is the purpose, right?)&nbsp; I read tons of blogs and things online on how to turn a photo into a silhouette, but most Photoshop tutorials were way beyond my expertise and knowledge. So I set out to figure it out myself.<br /> <br /> I still operate Photoshop Elements 6.0-Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!&nbsp; I'm sure the newer versions have all kinds of new doohickies, but I'm happy with this one.<br /> <br /> I took a profile picture of each of my girls against a blank wall.&nbsp; I then opened the photo in PSE and converted each to black &amp; white. This made it much easier to accomplish what I was about to do.&nbsp; I then selected the Paint Bucket tool and and used the dropper to match the background color and filled it in to cover any shadows I had.&nbsp; Then I selected the Paint Bucket tool again and picked black as my main color and began filling in the profiles of my girls.&nbsp; This definitely took some patience and time since it would sometimes fill in the background or areas I didn't want black so I had to undo it.&nbsp; But this worked pretty well!<br /> Now, print your photo out onto cardstock. Mine looked like this after I cut around the silhouette:<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" /></a></div> See? Don't they look like little people?? I'm in LOVE!<br /> I then took those cuts and traced them onto actual black cardstock and cut them out with the smallest scissors I have to preserve every detail (hair, eyelashes, it's all there!)<br /> I had picked up a couple frames on clearance at Michael's but wanted them to be black as well, so I took a can of spray paint to them. Win, win!&nbsp; I've seen these for years now, and my oldest daughter is so into flip flops this year that I thought she would just love them.&nbsp; Soooo, today we're going to make fabric covered flip flops.&nbsp; I found cheap pink flip flops at Dollar Tree for $1 each so that was the easy part. I have a huge fabric collection so both girls were able to just pick out what they wanted to use from that so essentially this craft only cost me $2! :-)<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" /></a></div> Supplies Needed:<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Flip flops of your choice<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 1 or more coordinating fabrics<br /> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Ribbon if you choose to put a bow on top (I have ribbon pictured on each but only used one)<br /> <br /> First I had to figure out what size I wanted my strips to be. I ended up decided on 1" wide strips. Take your fabric and make a 1-2" cut on the selvage edge to eliminate anything uneven. I've already used this fabric so I only had to remove a small strip.&nbsp;<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" /></a></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> You can see that I marked out 1", 2", 3", etc on my fabric.&nbsp; To be honest, I cut WAY too many strips to start with. I ended up with a huge pile of strips left at the end of this project.. (I'm going to just save them in case any fall off of their flip flops) By the 2nd pair, I realized I only needed to tear 2-1" strips the length of the fabric and had just enough. So, after you've marked your fabric, you're just going to grab hold of one end and tear a strip all the way down to the bottom.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" /></a></div> &nbsp;My 4 yr old was super thrilled that she was finally able to help do something (even though this was the ONLY step they could really help with)<br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="268" /></a></div> &nbsp; After we tore the strips I had to decide how much "fringe" I wanted. I played around with 4-5" and my oldest said she wanted "Lots" of "ruffles" so I ended up going with 5" pieces on hers. Cut your long strips into the size you want until you have this:<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="; width="320" /></a></div> The rest is easy (though a little time consuming).
