Getting to Know Popular Canadian Food /whats-cooking-canada-getting-to-know-popular-canadian-food/ Wed, 03 Aug 2022 13:22:54 +0000 /?p=1573 Canada’s food scene has been flourishing in recent years, with credit to the country being multicultural and to its varying topography and climates. Though Canadian cuisine, indeed, stems from a wide range of influence– from indigenous cultures to the growing numbers of the immigrant population including international students– there is still an array of food and dishes that is distinguishably local. Here are some of the famous Canadian dishes that are worth indulging for; Salmon A massive land yet surrounded by huge bodies of water, Canada has a bountiful seafood bucket. Most specifically, Canadian salmon has found its way into many local dishes, prepared as pan-fried, baked, or smoked. Locals have a strong affinity to cedar planked salmon and sockeye salmon, which is usually cold-smoked. Other popular preparation for salmon in the country includes gravlax and salmon jerky. Poutine One of the most famous food in the country and specifically in rural Quebec is poutine. The dish classified as a quintessential French-Canadian delicacy is widely found across Canada but most concentrated in French Canada. Poutine can be made in many ways but is traditionally presented as a bed of French fries, brown gravy, and cheese curds. Timbits From Canada’s global donut and coffee brand Tim Hortons, Timbits aka doughnut holes are a must-have for locals. Originating from Quebec, this dish uses various fillings like savory pork, beef, or veal flavored spiced with clove and cinnamon. Butter Tarts Originally from Ontario, butter tarts can be commonly found around the country in most bakeries and cafes. The tart-shaped pastry crust is filled with a deliciously creamy syrup consisting of sugar, butter, and egg. Caribou Stew Caribou stew is a traditional Canadian dish from the northern rural part of the country. Caribou, aka reindeer, is hunted and not famed, which guarantees that one can have a unique culinary experience of having meat from a wild animal. Since hunting is also seasonal, a moose or venison variation of the stew can also be an option. Saskatoon Berry Jam Native to southern Canada, Saskatoon Berry Jam is seasonal and is usually available during summer months when saskatoon berries flourish. Coming from the family of apples, saskatoon berries have a tart and sweet flavor and resemble blueberries. Many Canadian households have their own recipe for this jam which can also be topped on pies and tarts. Lobster Roll Closely associated with the Maritimes– New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island– lobster roll has become a classic Canadian summertime snack. Served on a crusty bun or even pitas, the globally popular dish consists of chunks of lobster steamed or boiled in seawater and served with mayonnaise, black pepper, lemon juice, and butter. ]]> Famous Australian Attractions- by state and territory /famous-australian-attractions-by-state-and-territory/ Tue, 05 Jul 2022 23:00:24 +0000 /?p=1564 The world’s largest island but the smallest continent Australia is divided into six states and two territories. Ranked as the number one most popular sports event with the highest maximum monthly search volume, reaching 185 million Google searches, it is unsurprising that NBA’s annual drafting event also garners worldwide viewership. NBA draft, which happens every June, not only represents the future of professional basketball but also is a life-changing moment for many college basketball players. Tracing back to its creation in the 1890s by Canadian American physical education instructor Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts, basketball has been a global phenomenon for hundreds of years now– played in the streets, in schools, and professionally. In the US, college basketball has gained most of the Americans’ interest according to a Statista report including the March Madness championship game that raises billions of dollars in revenue annually. Here are some fascinating facts about college basketball in the US; Several collegiate athletic bodies govern the sport, particularly at the top-tier level, including National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), and the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), among many others. These associations offer their athletes various scholarship packages by division level. For international students who are simply fascinated with the bball for various reasons other than playing professionally in the future, there are over 1,330 basketball colleges in the US that offer competitive programmes designed for both men’s and women’s basketball. Some even offer basketball scholarships. International students can really take part in college athletics including basketball, based on NCAA’s 2019-2020 report, which revealed that more than 21,000 international student-athletes have enrolled and competed at NCAA schools. Students from Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and the Netherlands have joined the Division 1 level in 2019-2020. College basketball simply injects fun traditions into a highly competitive sport. Several traditions that reflect the unapologetic ways of enjoying the game include John Brown University’s toilet paper game wherein fans of the Golden Eagles fling toilet paper onto the court at the first field goal, recording the first technical foul of the season. In every Duke Blue Devils basketball game, you will witness the Cameron Crazies going… uhm.. wacky and mocking opposing players. The blue-faced supporters also had to camp “Krzyzewskiville” to be a certified member. Taylor University’s Silent Night pushes creativity of bball fandom to the next level. Students dressed in odd costumes display a different kind of support in the Odle Arena by staying completely silent until the Trojans score their 10th point and then they unleash chaos. ]]> The UK’s Innovation Playbook /the-uks-innovation-playbook/ Tue, 21 Jun 2022 23:00:28 +0000 /?p=1553 The UK government is determined to position itself as a global innovation hub by 2035. COVID-19 has shaken the global economy, forcing businesses, institutions, and governments to re-examine their existing and future growth strategies. With the pandemic disruptions and unprecedented challenges that have irreversibly changed the world, predictably, innovation and technology are anticipated to enable organisations and nations to thrive in the new world. The UK is one of the G8 countries that recognises the significant role of innovation to drive resiliency amidst today’s pressing challenges including climate change, unemployment, and global pandemics, among many others. Underpinned by the objective to make the UK a global science superpower and a global hub for innovation by 2035, the UK Innovation Strategy was launched. As shared in the Secretary of State’s foreword: “This UK-wide Innovation Strategy sets out our long-term plan for delivering innovation-led growth. Its primary objective is to boost private sector investment across the whole of the UK, creating the right conditions for all businesses to innovate and giving them the confidence to do so. We will also show direct leadership and action – such as through new missions and backing technologies of the future – clearly signalling where the Government will focus in the future.” For international students considering the UK to be their study destination, knowing that the nation has a long-term plan for strategic growth is encouraging. Four Key Pillars The UK Innovation strategy is tethered on four key pillars: Pillar 1: Unleashing Business – We will fuel businesses that want to innovate. This key action includes billion pounds investments in R&D and UK life science companies. Pillar 2: People – We will make the UK the most exciting place for innovation talent. This involves the introduction of new High Potential Individual and Scale-up visa routes as well as creating new initiatives for the Innovator route to attract and retain high-skilled, globally mobile innovation talent. Pillar 3: Institutions & Places – We will ensure our research, development and innovation institutions serve the needs of businesses and places across the UK. This key action includes allocating millions of pounds to drive local growth across the UK through R&D and accelerate economic growth through university-business innovation. Pillar 4: Missions & Technologies – We will stimulate innovation to tackle major challenges faced by the UK and the world and drive capability in key technologies. This key principle includes creating an Innovation Missions programme and new Prosperity Partnerships to establish business-led research projects to develop transformational new technologies. Of the four pillars of the UK Innovation Strategy, Pillar 3 involves investment in the education sector. The Policy Paper stated that the government recognises the significant role of Institutes of Technology (IoTs) in championing unique collaborations between further education colleges, universities, and businesses. It stated: “They provide tailored higher technical education and training in key STEM sectors, such as digital, construction, advanced manufacturing, and engineering, to respond to the needs of business in the local area. UK Government is investing up to £290 million to establish a comprehensive network of IoTs across England. They will establish relationships with other key providers of technical skills in the wider education system, such as University Technical Colleges so that there are clear progression pathways for students to support them.” In addition, the UK government also created reforms to ensure that businesses and learning institutions can collaborate to identify and target skills gaps such as the Skills Accelerator launched in England by the Department for Education (DfE). ]]> Most Loved Winter Sports in Canada /most-loved-winter-sports-in-canada/ Tue, 14 Jun 2022 23:00:59 +0000 /?p=1549 At the 2022 Olympic Winter Games held in Beijing, China last February, Canada took home 26 medals, including the gold medals won in snowboarding, speed skating, and women’s hockey. Canada’s economy is strongly rebounding from the impacts of the pandemic reflected by the demand for skilled workers outnumbering the supply. In a bid to address the labour shortage and offset the missed job opportunities for international students due to COVID-19, Canada has announced a new temporary policy that allows post-graduate work permit holders to qualify for an open work permit. “With the economy growing faster than employers can hire new workers, Canada needs to look at every option so that we have the skills and labour needed to fuel our growth. Immigration will be crucial to easing our labour shortage, and these measures aim to address pressing needs in all sectors across the country while providing more opportunities for recent graduates and other applicants to build their lives in Canada and continue contributing to our short-term recovery and long-term prosperity, “ stated the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. Former international students in Canada holding a post-graduation work permit that will expire between January and December 2022 can apply for an additional open work permit of up to 18 months. This new policy allows graduates to continue to seek job opportunities and experiences as well as have a higher chance to qualify for an Express Entry profile and earn a permanent residency status after more than two years of having limited employment chances due to the pandemic. The government said that they are currently exploring ways to streamline and expedite the process for the policy. A Growing Source of Labour Market International students have been significantly contributing to Canada’s labour market, raking in over $21 billion annually for the economy and, more importantly, contributing to the communities. International students holding a post-graduation work permit are already highly-integrated into the country’s key industries and would substantially mitigate labour shortage. Last year, of the more than 157,000 former students who became permanent residents, over 88,000 of them transitioned directly from a PGWP to permanent status. A recently published study in collaboration with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada revealed the significant contribution of international students to the labour market through the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). The study highlighted that PGWP is one of the main avenues for international students to stay and work in Canada after graduation. PGWP, a temporary worker program that offers international student graduates of public postsecondary and private degree-granting educational institutions labour market opportunities in Canada, benefits both the graduates and the country– the skilled graduates gain job experiences to apply for some permanent residence streams and the country becomes an even more attractive study destination. The study reported that almost three-quarters of all PGWP holders became permanent residents within five years of having obtained their PGWP, with those who held a study permit for college- and master’s-level programs transitioning faster than others. The research concluded that the increasing number of international students is directly related to the increasing numbers of PGWP holders that have engaged in the Canadian labour market over the past decade (2008-2018). Indeed, international students remain to be a growing source for Canada’s labour market. ]]> All Things Melbourne /all-things-melbourne/ Tue, 26 Apr 2022 23:00:44 +0000 /?p=1522 Melbourne is the second-largest city in Australia and the capital city of the state of Victoria. The post Disney Dreamers Academy changes course to reach more students appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> After nearly 20 years of impacting the lives of hundreds of students, Disney Dreamers Academy (DDA) is changing its approach in an effort to expand its reach and serve more students. Walt Disney World officials announced this week a new collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs, empowering more young people through mentorship, career exploration and transformative experiences in the communities where they live and at Walt Disney World Resort. “Programs like this create the exposure and opportunities that help our young people dream beyond their circumstances and see new possibilities for their future,” said Jamie Merrill, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida. “Disney’s investment doesn’t just expand horizons, it has the power to change lives and create lasting impact in our communities.” DDA is transforming into a year-round, multiyear experience designed to reach students earlier and keep them connected to the program over time as part of an initial pilot developed in collaboration with participating Boys & Girls Clubs and youth development experts. The initiative will bring DDA to middle school Club members in the Orlando, Miami, Atlanta and Houston metropolitan areas. The locations were selected based on Disney’s existing presence and relationships with families and organizations. “I’ve seen firsthand the confidence, connections and opportunities Disney Dreamers Academy has provided students over the past 19 years,” said Sivonne Davis, vice president of Marketing Strategy. “The impact this program has had on young people, their families and the communities around them is remarkable, and this builds on the foundation to inspire students to explore their potential and dream beyond what they imagined possible.” The first class of Disney Dreamers in the new format will include 200 students selected by participating Boys & Girls Clubs and will be announced in October, with programming beginning in January 2027. Students in the program will participate in virtual and in-person experiences led by Disney Cast Members and experts. Students will explore subjects and career paths ranging from engineering to animal sciences and will experience Disney in their local Boys & Girls Clubs and through visits to Walt Disney World. Since 2008, DDA has annually selected 100 high school students nationally from thousands of applicants to attend a four-day event at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, where they developed key skills such as effective communication, networking strategies. and confidence-building. In total, 1,800 students have participated in the program. “This next chapter is about meeting students where they are and helping them discover what’s possible for their future at an earlier age,” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, director of External Affairs. “By working alongside local Boys & Girls Clubs, we can reach more students and provide meaningful experiences that support their growth over time.” The post Disney Dreamers Academy changes course to reach more students appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> news/2026/09/29/disney-dreamers-academy-changes-course-to-reach-more-students/feed/ 0 10463647 Hampton and Howard face off in legendary HBCU football rivalry news/2026/09/27/hampton-and-howard-face-off-in-legendary-hbcu-football-rivalry/ news/2026/09/27/hampton-and-howard-face-off-in-legendary-hbcu-football-rivalry/#respond Mon, 28 Sep 2026 01:52:09 +0000 ?p=10463511 Hampton and Howard face off in their historic HBCU football rivalry Oct. 3 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., in the Battle of the Real HU. The post Hampton and Howard face off in legendary HBCU football rivalry appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> The “Battle of the Real HU” college football game between Hampton University and Howard University is set for Saturday, Oct. 3 at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., with kickoff set for 3 p.m. ET. Formerly known as the “Truth and Service Classic,” the game has been rebranded as the “Battle of the Real HU,” aligning the event’s official name with the rivalry’s long-standing and widely recognized identity. The rivalry is one of the oldest and most storied in HBCU football, dating back to 1908. It stems from the friendly debate between Howard and Hampton over which institution is the “Real HU,” a tradition that has fueled generations of school pride among students and alumni. The game celebrates the legacy and culture of two historic programs that have helped shape college football and advance the tradition of HBCU excellence. Hampton holds a 58-44-1 advantage in the all-time series, while Howard won the most recent meeting, 34-7, on Sept. 20, 2025. “The Hampton–Howard game is one of the iconic rivalries in HBCU football, and we are grateful to our partners at Audi Field for continuing to provide a premier stage for the Battle for the REAL HU in its 101st meeting,” said Hampton Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Anthony D. Henderson Sr. “Hosting this historic HBCU rivalry in such a first-class professional venue underscores the significance of the game and our shared commitment to elevating the student-athlete experience. We appreciate Danita Johnson and her team for their continued collaboration in helping us showcase Hampton Football, our university, and HBCU excellence to a broader audience from the nation’s capital this upcoming season.” The matchup debuted at Audi Field in 2021 as the “Truth and Service Classic,” with Hampton defeating Howard, 48-22, in the inaugural game on Sept. 18, 2021. The Pirates currently hold a 3-1 record against the Bison at Audi Field, winning in 2021, 2023 and 2024. “The Battle of the Real HU is one of the country’s most anticipated events in the college landscape,” said Howard University Vice President of Athletics Kery Davis. “This event brings together two prestigious institutions in Howard and Hampton that showcase tradition, pride, legacy and HBCU excellence. I look forward to seeing Bison Nation in full effect as we continue our bragging rights on the gridiron.” Howard has long been recognized as one of the premier programs in HBCU football, competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) since its founding in 1970. The Bison have built a legacy that includes multiple conference championships, Black College National Championships and appearances in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoffs. Howard won back-to-back MEAC championships in 2022 and 2023 and has continued to elevate the program with nationally televised appearances. The Bison opened the 2026 season on Aug. 29 against Alabama A&M in the Cricket MEAC/SWAC Challenge in Atlanta. Hampton has competed in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) since 2022, continuing the program’s growth after four seasons in the Big South Conference. The Pirates moved to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision in 1995 after more than eight decades in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Hampton has claimed seven Black College National Championships, most recently in 2006. The Pirates enter a new era in 2026 under first-year head coach Van Malone, who was hired in December 2025. The game will stream live on HBCU GO, as well as in broadcast syndication in major U.S. TV markets including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, Atlanta, and more (check local listings). Locally, a watch party for the game is being held at The Fox Harlem (2224 Frederick Douglas Blvd.) hosting by both the Howard University Alumni Club-Greater NYC and the New York Hampton Alumni Club. The slow-moving storm, which killed a New York City housing authority worker when a tree fell Saturday, was expected to linger through Sunday with heavy rain, strong winds and dangerous surf from New Jersey to New England. The storm remained just south of Long Island and east of northern New Jersey on Sunday morning and was expected to loop around the area for roughly another 24 hours, said Bob Oravec, a lead forecaster with the National Weather Service in College Park, Maryland. The worst of the remaining rainfall was expected Sunday from northern New Jersey through New York City and Long Island into southern New England. The storm was gradually weakening, Oravec said, but the threat of tidal flooding would linger through high-tide cycles Sunday morning and again in the evening. “The most impactful parts of the storm are likely going to be the high winds and the tidal flooding,” Oravec said. More than 100,000 customers were without power across the Northeast and mid-Atlantic Sunday morning, according to PowerOutage.us, including more than 40,000 in New York, 31,000 in Connecticut, 21,000 in New Jersey and 11,000 in Massachusetts. The Federal Emergency Management Agency said response coordination centers in impacted regions were operating at an “enhanced posture,” and teams were on standby in New England in case of widespread outages. On Saturday in New Jersey and New York, some people kayaked down flooded streets. Others headed to beaches to try to surf the higher-than-usual waves. Emergency crews in Sea Bright, New Jersey, rescued a woman and her dog after their vehicle became trapped in floodwaters, ABC7 reported. In Surf City, New Jersey, water rose inside a marina where workers had moved equipment to higher ground, and owner Kenny Formica said customers reported boats and Jet Skis missing or blown from their lifts. In Norfolk, Virginia, floodwaters left passing cars pushing wakes through some streets. The storm also disrupted travel throughout the region. Hundreds of flights were canceled at Boston Logan International Airport, while flooding cut off highway access to North Carolina’s Hatteras Island, stranding visitors and forcing one couple to scramble to relocate their wedding after most of their roughly 45 guests were unable to reach the island. ___ AP journalist Julie Walker contributed from New York. The post The Liberty fall short of securing home court for opening round of the playoffs appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> The New York Liberty entered Monday night’s game versus the Atlanta Dream at the Barclays Center with the possibility of securing home court advantage for the opening round of the WNBA playoffs, which begin on Sunday. Three days earlier, the Liberty arguably had their best win of the season, defeating the league’s No. 1 seed Minnesota Lynx 93-81 on the road last Friday. Yet, turnovers and sub-par defense in losing 95-84 to the Dream ensured New York will play on the road this weekend, regardless of the outcome of their final regular season game last night (Wednesday) in Brooklyn, hosting the Dream again. The Dream had seven steals in forcing 11 Liberty turnovers overall while holding New York to 42.3% shooting, including 24.1% (7-29) on 3-point attempts. The Dream closed out the second quarter on a 10-3 run to take a 41-38 halftime lead, then exploded for 32 third-quarter points to extend their advantage going into the fourth. Guard Jordin Canada led the Dream with 19 points and center Angel Reese posted 18 points and 10 rebounds. Liberty superstar Breanna Stewart, who was named the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup Most Valuable Player (MVP) as the United States brought home their fifth straight gold on September 13, had game highs of 27 points and 14 rebounds, while center Jonquel Jones added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Liberty point guard Sabrina Ionescu, a four-time WNBA All-Star, was just 3-12 from the field (2-7 from 3-point range) while committing two turnovers and fouling out in 29 minutes of playing time. At the start of the league’s games on Tuesday night, the seedings were still fluid. The Liberty were 26-17 and the eighth and final seed in the playoff standings. The 26-17 Dallas Wings were the No. 7 seed, holding the head-to-head tie breaker over the Liberty, due to a 2-1 record against them this season, despite an identical record having taken two of three games from the Liberty during the season. The Washington Mystics were No. 6 at 26-16 and could fall below New York with two losses and a Liberty win last night. The Mystics’ last regular season game is tonight versus the Chicago Sky. The Indiana Fever were 27-15 and in the fifth spot, but close out their schedule with back-to-back games against the Lynx Tuesday and tonight, and could drop below the Mystics. The Fever caught a break on Tuesday as Summit, N.J.-born Olivia Miles, a lock to be named the WNBA Rookie of the Year and likely to finish top 3 in the MVP voting, sat out the game due to a left calf injury. The Golden State Valkyries were No. 2 with a mark of 31-11 and one game behind Minnesota, which was 32-10 going into their game against the Fever. The Las Vegas Aces, the defending WNBA champion, with A’ja Wilson as the prohibitive favorite to win her fifth league MVP award, were 29-13 and the No. 3 seed. The Dream, at 29-14, is holding the No. 4 seed. Kathy Hochul to reject federal school choice program appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> This story was originally published by Chalkbeat. Sign up for their newsletters at ckbe.at/newsletters. A coalition of union officials and civil rights leaders urged New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday to reverse her plans to opt into a federal tax-credit scholarship program passed by Republicans in Congress and signed by President Donald Trump. During a gathering at the Lower Manhattan headquarters of the United Federation of Teachers, top officials argued that the voucher-like program represents a threat to public education. They said it would allow public funding to flow to private schools that may refuse to admit higher-need children. They were flanked by several lawmakers and representatives from advocacy groups, including the NAACP. “Vouchers are about allowing private schools to pick and choose who they admit, leaving the most vulnerable children behind,” said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. She offered a blunt message to the governor: “Opt out right now.” The press conference is one of the most visible efforts so far to persuade Hochul, who is facing re-election in November, to change her position about the federal program. Many of the groups support Hochul’s re-election bid and are hopeful she will be receptive to their arguments, even as she indicated in May that she plans to opt the state in. In a statement, Hochul’s office reiterated its support for the program and emphasized that public school students can benefit from it. “Governor Hochul’s priority is making sure every student receives an education that best meets their needs, which is why she wants the federal scholarship tax credit to benefit all New York students,” Hochul spokesperson Jonah Allon said. He noted the governor has increased funding for public schools and that the tax-credit program would not divert funding from local and state budgets. The tax-credit program, approved last year through the Republican-backed One Big Beautiful Bill Act, will take effect in January 2027. It allows taxpayers who donate up to $1,700 to an eligible scholarship-granting organization to receive an equivalent reduction in their federal taxes. Those organizations can give students money for private school tuition, tutoring, and other education-related costs. Governors must opt their states in for students to benefit from the program. Hochul’s office has previously said she’s waiting for regulations from the Treasury Department, expected later this month, to see if there are any “poison pills” that would change her decision to participate. Union officials said they still believe there’s time to get their message across to the governor. “We’re just hoping that she continues to have an open mind and hears us,” United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew told reporters on Wednesday. To date, 30 states have formally opted in, according to a list maintained by the Internal Revenue Service. Most are Republican-led, and many already have state voucher or education savings account programs. So far, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis is the only Democrat to officially opt into the program and enthusiastically embrace it. In Kentucky, Kansas, and North Carolina, Republican-controlled legislatures overrode Democratic governors’ vetoes to opt their states into the program. Some Democratic governors, including Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers, have firmly rejected the program. Most are taking a wait-and-see approach, prompting furious lobbying from all sides. The federal program would represent a dramatic expansion of private school choice in blue states that have resisted vouchers, but some public education advocates have argued that it would be a mistake to pass up the opportunity to raise money for tutoring or after-school programs — even if they think the credit is bad policy. Teachers unions have generally taken the opposite tack, arguing the program will undermine public schools by luring away students and directing more taxpayer dollars to private schools. Still, enrollment and funding are not necessarily directly linked: State funding for New York school districts has increased in recent years, even as there are fewer students in public schools. Funding for the federal tax credit comes from federal, not state, coffers. Advocates have pitched the effort as essentially free federal money. Union leaders raised a host of other concerns. They argued that scholarship-granting organizations could spend money in ways that don’t benefit students and that public funding could flow to schools that may not welcome students with disabilities or other needs. They also noted that relatively affluent families could benefit from scholarships to private schools because families earning up to 300% of their area’s median income are eligible. “The fundamental difference between public and private schools is this: We educate everyone,” said Melinda Person, president of New York State United Teachers. Others are pressuring Hochul to move forward with her plans to opt in. A coalition of 37 anti-poverty groups, community-based organizations, and charter school leaders argued in a Sept. 10 letter to Hochul that the program could benefit public school students. “This program offers a source of funding, at no cost to the state education budget, that can expand access to tutoring, afterschool programming, special education services, and other supports that are too often out of reach for lower-income families,” the letter states. “We believe New York can shape its participation in ways that meaningfully benefit public school students.” Jim Blew, who advises a coalition of groups backing the tax credit, praised Hochul’s plan to participate. “We are very impressed that she has stood up to the unfounded arguments from the unions,” said Blew, who worked in the Education Department during Trump’s first term. “This takes no money from the state budget for public education.” Ideas editor Matt Barnum and national editor Erica Meltzer contributed. 4 seed. The agreement, which officials described as the largest worker settlement in city history, also requires the company to submit to a new monitoring system to ensure compliance with delivery worker pay laws in the city. In a statement, DoorDash admitted errors, saying, “Simply put, we screwed up.” “While these mistakes weren’t intentional, that doesn’t make them okay. We pride ourselves on operational excellence at DoorDash — and this was not excellent, nor was it acceptable. Dashers should be paid in full, on time, every time. We are sorry to the Dashers we let down,” the company said. Most of the settlement will be returned to more than 260,000 workers who were underpaid, not paid, or paid late for deliveries by DoorDash, according to City Hall. The company will also pay about $16 million in civil penalties and other costs to the city. “When a worker earns a wage, they deserve to be paid that wage — not tomorrow, not after a lawsuit, but on time and in full,” Mamdani said in a statement. “DoorDash underpaid more than 260,000 workers, and today we are getting that money back.” DoorDash said many of the errors in payment were caused by “technical bugs or happened in complicated situations,” such as deliveries that went outside city boundaries, had multiple pickup or drop-off spots, or included deliveries that were canceled or partially completed. Last year, the company agreed to pay almost $17 million to settle claims that it unfairly used customer tips to subsidize the wages of its delivery workers in New York, rather than allowing drivers to keep the tips on top of their guaranteed pay. The post Can the Yankees take down the Red Sox without Aaron Judge? appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> This was supposed to be the year the Yankees would win the franchise’s first World Series since 2009. A roster that included all-time greats Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez, Hall of Famer CC Sabathia, and Series MVP Hideki Matsui, one of the best players Japan has ever produced. Yet, as the Yankees look towards Tuesday, when they open the playoffs at home against what is virtually certain to be the Boston Red Sox, their longtime nemesis, in a best-of-three wildcard series, the prospects of them navigating an always perilous path to the World Series were reduced when Yankees manager Aaron Boone said this past Tuesday that the reigning American League MVP likely won’t play in the series due to a right calf strain. “We’re planning on him not being a part of that,” Boone revealed to reporters. Judge, who has only appeared in 66 games this season, primarily recovering from a right rib stress fracture, which caused him to sit out 84 games from May 31 to Sept. 8, is now on the 10-day injured list, placed there last Friday. The 34-year-old Judge, arguably the best player in the sport over the last decade, isn’t expected back for the divisional round if the Yankees get by the Red Sox. Last weekend, Boone informed the media the team didn’t have a firm estimate as to when Judge, a three-time AL MVP, three-time AL home run leader, two-time MLB RBI king and last season’s MLB batting champion, would return to the lineup. “I mean, I have no idea, we’re in the early stages,” expressed Boone, now in his ninth season as the Yankees manager. “We’ll just obviously treat it and see what transpires.” The Yankees watched Tampa Bay clinch the AL East title on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium when they won the second game of a double-header on Tuesday 6-1. The Yankees shut out the Rays in the opener. Tampa Bay 96-61 going into the third game of the four-game series last night with the finale scheduled for 7:05 tonight. The Yankees were second in the division at 90-67 and the 84-73 Red Sox third. With Judge unavailable, the Yankees offense will have to be multifaceted — both power and small ball will be required to make a deep postseason run. Designated hitter Ben Rice, who as of Wednesday had 39 home runs and 95 RBIs, both team highs, was the only Yankee with more than 20 homers and 80 runs batted in, so timely power will have to come from sources such as second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. (19 home runs), first baseman Paul Goldschmidt (18), and left fielder Cody Bellinger (17). But it is pitching that must advance the Yankees, led by leading AL Cy Young Award candidate Cam Schlittler, who is 14-6 with a 1.94 ERA and 234 strikeouts. Schlittler is scheduled to start tonight before taking the mound next week in the wildcard series. But the prevailing question is: Can the Yankees win without Judge? The post Can the Yankees take down the Red Sox without Aaron Judge? appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> news/2026/09/24/can-the-yankees-take-down-the-red-sox-without-aaron-judge/feed/ 0 10463248 System Failures Part 1: In Black neighborhoods, deed theft hides in plain sight news/2026/09/24/in-black-neighborhoods-deed-theft-hides-in-plain-sight/ news/2026/09/24/in-black-neighborhoods-deed-theft-hides-in-plain-sight/#comments Thu, 24 Sep 2026 04:00:00 +0000 ?p=10463243 Across New York, officials have admitted to a growing problem, one that has communities increasingly alarmed: deed theft. The post System Failures Part 1: In Black neighborhoods, deed theft hides in plain sight appeared first on New York Amsterdam News. ]]> Across New York, officials have admitted to a growing problem, one that has communities increasingly alarmed: deed theft. It is fraud that has affected older adults, immigrants, and homeowners of color in gentrifying neighborhoods like Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, Brownsville, East New York, and Harlem, and has become blatant. Victims report being initially confused and later incensed at the realization that they’ve been harmed –– and no one seems to be doing anything about it. Deed theft happens when someone illegally takes control of a property without the owner’s knowledge or by tricking the owner into signing over a deed. Activists fighting these incidents also say that forced guardianship, foreclosure rescue scams, and police-backed evictions are other forms of deed theft. Criminal fraud rings know how to manipulate the official systems homeowners trust to reach their next victims. Predatory investors track court records and property filings to target at-risk homes. Before the property gets auctioned, criminals might contact the homeowners and pretend to help them get a fake loan modification or a short sale and trick them into signing papers that transfer the deed to an investor’s LLC. They then quickly transfer the deed to another shell company to hide the fraud and make selling the property easier for quick profit. But each stolen deed case amounts to a raid on Black generational wealth, notes Attorney Jacqueline McMickens, who recently helped the family of Harlem’s Queen Mother Delois Blakely with her eviction case at 477 West 142nd Street. McMickens says the term “deed theft” doesn’t fully capture the economic harm caused by these cases. “This shouldn’t be continuously looked at as deed theft,” McMickens said. “This is really equity theft.” At 212 Jefferson Avenue, friends gathered in early April 2026 to support Carmella Charrington in her fight against an alleged illegal eviction attempt by a developer. (Karen Juanita Carrillo photo) In the Blakely case, seven low-income residents came together to form the 477 West 142nd Street Housing Development Fund Corporation (HDFC) through New York City’s Tenant Interim Lease program. Blakely recently told the AmNews the building had been a safe space, created during Harlem’s roughest years. “No one wanted to live there. It was a blight to Harlem where I live,” she said, remembering the 1970s. “Some of us wanted to deal with that and serve our people. And I happened to be one of them.” The city officially sold the cooperative the property on Dec. 7, 1982; each family acquired shares in the building for $250 per apartment. But because the shareholders took out a $650,000 mortgage on the property in 2009 and didn’t repay it, they lost the property. They are now being offered leases to remain in their individual units but won’t have access to the property’s equity to pass on to their families. An insidious way to steal Stolen property may immediately mean the loss of a shelter for a family, but it also ultimately means the loss of equity, or financial value, for generations to come. The New York City Sheriff’s Office said it received nearly 3,500 deed theft complaints from 2014 to 2023, mostly in Black neighborhoods where property values are rising. Notable recent cases include a mortgage fraud scheme that took the Harlem property at 267 West 131st Street from the family of Okryun Marrero after she died in 2018. On April 18, 2024, a woman named Angela Jazmin Ramos Malpica allegedly posed as a Marrero heir and used fake IDs and birth certificates to forge the signatures and details of Marrero’s real heirs and “sell” the property to a straw buyer, Yuan Kuei Li, for $950,000. The same day, Li allegedly transferred the contract to Abdur Rahman and his company, Great Neck Acquisitions Inc., for $1,515,000. On April 25, 2024, Great Neck Acquisitions recorded a fraudulent title with the city and used the house as collateral to secure a $1,636,000 mortgage and construction loan. “Ramos subsequently cashed three checks totaling $254,875.03, which were funds obtained from the mortgage and construction loan,” Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. announced when his office indicted Ramos, Rahman and Li for deed theft in October 2025. “Rahman allegedly received $487,375 from the construction loan into a GNA bank account, which he controlled. Rahman also sent approximately $265,000 of the fraudulently obtained loan proceeds to a corporate bank account for MSK Construction Team Inc., a construction company controlled by Li. Li, through MSK, allegedly used portions of that money to pay for ongoing construction on the alleged stolen property, for which Li was serving as the contractor.”

4 seed.
