His first birthday would have been tomorrow. I never knew him, never knew his parents. But I have prayed countless prayers for a medical miracle, that hardened hearts would allow his transport to the United States for treatment, and eventually for the repose of his soul and for his grieving parents.

When I first read news of his death I was at work. I had to leave my desk several times and lock myself in a single-person bathroom whilst I wept. I probably wept for a good twenty to thirty minutes before I could bring myself to go back to my desk around others. I wept even more later that night as I prayed a rosary for that sweet little boy. Then I prayed to him, not for him. As a baptized infant his soul went straight to Heaven. I prayed to him that he would intercede to God for his parents, that they might not lose faith in their grief, that they would turn to God for solace. I prayed to him that he would ask God to protect my two little girls from the murder he suffered at the hands of the almighty and godless state. And I prayed to him that he would pray for the salvation of my soul, and if I make it to Heaven that he would seek me out and greet me as a brother.

Little Charlie was a victim of murder. A murder sanctioned by a court system that sees value only in human life that can economically contribute to society. A victim of society that offers little to no protection to the most vulnerable amongst us. A victim of a state that strips parents of their God-given rights to look after the best interests of their children. As sad as this case is I fear Charlie will not be the last victim of this modern godlessness. At times like this, I wonder if it might not be best for Western civilization to be destroyed so we can start anew.

God forgive those who murdered little Charlie. God forgive us all. Although he is not a canonized saint, he is surely in Heaven. Pray for us Charlie. Pray for us.

2017/08/charlie-gard.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-6830884904458461306Thu, 16 Mar 2017 03:44:00 +00002017-03-15T20:44:01.327-07:00Would that we had an EmperorBelow is a link to a great article on Rorate Caeli arguing the benefits of having a lay power exercise power the pope in the form of the Holy Roman Emperor.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

The above is an actual picture of my mail-in ballot that I turned in just yesterday (Washington state is entirely a mail-in ballot state). Why would a staunch monarchist who believes this republic was a grave mistake support an American presidential candidate? I don't believe in republicanism or democracy, so how do I justify this action? How do I explain the undeniable enthusiasm that has been growing in me over the past couple of months for Donald Trump? The sleeping (and teething) baby in the next room prevent me from elaborating as much as I would like, but I will attempt to explain my choice--not just my choice in voting at all but also my choice of Donald Trump.

Firstly, I am a Catholic. Traditional Catholic teaching has always been that any legitimate form of government is acceptable as long as that government serves the common good. But, and here is a big but, the Church has traditionally always preferred monarchy--Catholic monarchy. We don't have a monarchy here in the U.S.--Catholic or otherwise--so it is within my Catholic rights to participate in this republic. While I don't believe in this republic it is my duty to do what I can to make this republic serve the common good, such as voting for political candidates who are pro-life, pro-marriage and respect the Church's liberty. Donald Trump has stated that he is pro-life (and the only candidate I can ever remember saying he thinks women who have abortions should face some form of punishment) and that he will appoint pro-life judges. He has also stated that he will repeal the Johnson Amendment which prevents clergy from preaching for or against political candidates (and it seems sometimes issues) or lose their tax-exempt status. Pro-life and pro-Church liberty? Sounds a whole lot better than his opponent who (thanks to the WikiLeaks email scandal) it has become known hates Catholics and of course we all know wants abortion on demand. I have a Catholic duty to prevent crooked Hilary Clinton from doing more harm than she has already done to our unborn and our nation--it is my Catholic duty to vote for a pro-life candidate. Trump--if he becomes President--could disappoint, but I must take him at his word just as I would any other candidate.

Secondly, I've found myself agreeing with much of what the alt-right argues. The vast majority of Republican candidates have proven themselves to be nothing but a bunch of cucks (look it up if you don't know what a cuck is) who bow down to political correctness and whatever the Democrats and the social elites demand of them, all to stay in power. Donald Trump represents a change from all the other cucks from whom we have to choose, a punch in the nuts of the establishment that has disappointed conservatives in this nation for decades now. You can keep fixing your broken car knowing that it is just a matter of time before it breaks down again, or you can junk it and buy a new one. The Republican Party as we have it now is a broken car that is beyond fixing. It's time to junk it and buy a new one. Trump is that new car.

I don't trust the mainstream media. I don't trust the pollsters who work hand-in-hand with the media, so I don't know just how close this election really is. I hope and pray that Trump wins on Tuesday by a landslide. If Hilary Clinton wins, I say to her anathema sit. She'll probably take us into World War III with Russia, but maybe then they'll kick our collective asses and we'll be in a better condition because of it.

2016/11/why-this-monarchist-is-voting-for-trump.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-8084956993299097878Thu, 23 Jun 2016 05:12:00 +00002016-06-22T22:12:46.386-07:00BrexitI wanted to write a long post about my thoughts on the Brexit referendum tomorrow (or rather today as of the writing of this post in the UK), but I ended up having to work from home late today and don't have the time for anything but a short post. Nothing I could say about the possibility of Brexit hasn't been said by millions of others before me, so this will have to suffice. The people of the United Kingdom have two choices: leave the European Union and regain control over your own destinies or continue to be ruled by godless bureaucratic overlords in Brussels for years to come (at least until the EU finally dies, which it will Brexit or no Brexit). Although many nations were experiencing industrial, commercial and scientific progress at levels never before experienced, it was argued that war was needed to wake Europe out of its cultural slumber. War would cleanse Western society from the decadence and moral and nationalist apathy which infected the great capitals of the continent. What the intellectuals and military leaders were not prepared for was the level of destruction and loss of human life that would ensue from a war waged with Twentieth Century technology.

I have been thinking a lot recently about how this historical call for war could be applicable in our own day. Now before I go any further I must say that I do not relish the idea of war (and the necessary loss of human life and misery that would result of any war), but at least in the abstract is not war sometimes necessary as a cleansing agent? When I was a child and got a deep scratch, my parents would pour hydrogen peroxide on the wound to clean it of any dirt and to help prevent an infection. It hurt like hell, but I understood that the pain was necessary to prevent a possible future (and greater pain) of infection. Could not war be the hydrogen peroxide of Western society, a tool to cleanse society from the dirt that has invaded the body and prevent infection?

As I look around at the world in which I live, I see that Europe has been invaded by millions of Muslims (not just the ones who are supposedly “refugees” and who travelled from supposedly war-torn nations over the last two years). The Muslims don’t assimilate: they don’t adopt the (nominal) Christian faith of their host nations, they don’t accept the values or culture of their host nations—indeed they call for their host nations to not only respect their own values but to adopt them (e.g. calls for Sharia Law to be adopted in European nations). Many of these Muslims are young men. What is the nationality/religion/age of those men who (with increasing numbers of occurrences) assault white women? And in the face of all of this, what do most European leaders do? Make excuses and call for greater acceptance/tolerance of Muslims and calls for more asylum grants for “refugees.”

I see that in the U.S. so-called transgendered individuals are applauded for rejecting the very bodies and natures that God gave to them from the moment of their conception. School districts are being coerced to let teenagers (who cannot even legally drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, vote and in some instances not even drive a car) use whatever bathroom or locker room that corresponds to their “gender identity.” Self-righteous and oh-so-enlightened parents happily support whatever form of deviancy their underage (and I must stress: underage ) children feel inclined to experiment with at the moment. Americans have periods of near apoplexy when a lion named Cecil is hunted or a gorilla name Harambe is euthanized to save the life of a toddler, yet millions of unborn babies are murdered legally each year.

I don’t glory in war, but I think war is about the only thing that can cleanse the West of the filth that has become so common in our cultures. I think it’s past time the Great Catholic Monarch of myth and legend rise up and bring that war on the enemies of God and His Church. If it’s the Muslims who bring that war, let us pray that what’s left of the faithful remnant wins and has the Church’s backing to re-build what’s left of the West when it’s over.
<strike></strike>2016/06/war.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-8247529776671976215Fri, 22 Apr 2016 03:40:00 +00002016-04-21T20:40:35.912-07:00Happy 90th Birthday!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The pundits on the left and right continue to analyze the causes and offer opinions on what the West should do in response. Here's my observations in a nutshell: What the hell did European governments think would happen when they welcomed with open arms hundreds of thousands of Muslim immigrants into Europe? What the hell did they think would happen when decades ago they started granting asylum to Muslims with no expectations that they convert to Christianity or assimilate to European culture?

Europeans will continue to slowly kill their own cultures by allowing more and more Muslims across their borders. The Muslim horde will not be defeated with understanding or tolerance, nor the sword of republican and democratic governments. They will only be defeated by the sword of the Faith. Just as the Muslims were defeated at the battle of Lepanto with the help of Our Lady, so too can they be defeated today. This is a war of religions, and can only be defeated with religion.2015/11/the-west-and-isis.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-505236652308005988Wed, 02 Sep 2015 06:02:00 +00002015-09-01T23:02:32.171-07:00Pope Francis and Captain KirkReaders of my blog over the past two plus years know that I am not a fan of our Holy Father Pope Francis. I submit to him as a loyal son of Rome, but it is my opinion that he has done a great deal of harm to the Church during his pontificate. I will, however, give credit where credit is due.

This morning I pulled into my employer's parking lot and did a quick check of the blogs I frequent daily. The first post I saw on Rorate Caeli was thrilling: Pope Francis has granted all SSPX priests the faculty to validly and licitly <a href="; target="_blank">absolve sins during the year of mercy. While the SSPX has long argued that they have faculty to absolve sins, I do not think their arguments hold water, but regardless this gesture of kindness and mercy from the Holy Father towards the SSPX is unprecedented. Fr. Z often has said that just as only Nixon could go to China, perhaps only Francis could reconcile with the SSPX and bring them into full union with Rome.

There is a great line in the movie Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Spock is trying to convince Kirk to accept an assignment to meet with the Klingons in the first gesture of peace between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets. Kirk had a long history of animosity and hatred towards the Klingons (a Klingon killed his son). Spock tells Kirk: "Only Nixon could go to China." Just as only Captain Kirk could reach a peace between the Federation and the Klingons, perhaps only Pope Francis can achieve SSPX reconciliation.2015/09/pope-francis-and-captain-kirk.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-7437572480371711908Sat, 20 Jun 2015 03:47:00 +00002015-06-19T20:47:02.092-07:00The Future of MonarchyI've been thinking a lot lately about the future of monarchy. The reigning monarchies of Europe are in a stable state (to one degree or another), but the abolished monarchies seem to have a rather dismal prognosis. Other than talk about a Romanian referendum on the restoration of their monarchy, what other abolished monarchy has a chance? I've said it before and I'll say it again: if the heads of abolished monarchies won't start to campaign for restorations, nothing will happen. Perhaps it's time for a charismatic person or two to found new monarchies? Perhaps monarchists should gather together in defensible areas of republics (for example republics with no or extremely distant histories of having belonged to a monarchy) and found their own kingdoms, keeping to themselves and hoping the world won't bother them too much. It's just an idea, but if Europe continues to kill itself culturally we just might find ourselves in a world much like the post Roman Empire, a world ripe for new monarchies to be formed.2015/06/the-future-of-monarchy.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-7745243849528019132Wed, 14 Jan 2015 05:54:00 +00002015-01-13T21:54:10.485-08:00Europe Rouses From Its SlumberSince World War II, and even more since the fall of Communism in Europe, European nations have increasingly given more power to a central government (the European Union). This drive towards more Europe and less Germany, less Britain, less France, etc. has eroded national cultural distinctions, not to mention national sovereignty. But some in Europe are starting to wake up to this threat. There is the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party in Germany and the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) in Great Britain, both of which propose to one degree or another a scaling back of the national powers given up to the EU, if not the outright departure from the EU. And then there's the Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes (Pegida) movement (Patriotic Europeans against the Izlamization of the West).

If one were to believe the main stream media or political leaders like Angela Merkel, Pegida is made up of a bunch of racist neo-Nazis. Concerns about one's culture being eroded and swallowed up by immigrants who refuse to integrate into the national culture, immigrants who share no common bond (either historically or regiously) to the dominant culture does not make one racist. What it does mean is that certain Europeans are starting to grow some balls and stand up to their own "democratic" totalitarian governments. Let the proverbial balls continue to grow, and may they be steel balls.2015/01/europe-rouses-from-its-slumber.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-5660199429311907880Fri, 19 Dec 2014 06:50:00 +00002014-12-18T22:50:47.790-08:00Cardinal Burke's Recent InterviewThe Synod on the Family ended two months ago. We all know how much of a disaster it was, despite the fact that some bishops and cardinals grew some spines and (rather loudly) protested the hijacking of the Synod. We also know how the Holy Father stood by and did nothing (although recently he claimed that no Synod Father called into question the Church's teachings on marriage--what a joke!).

The one shining star of the Synod, His Eminence Raymond Cardinal Burke recently gave an interview, which I post here. I'm posting a <a href="; target="_blank">transcript of the interview with my comments in red, along with the video itself.

"Q. Your Eminence, you grew up before the Second Vatican Council. How do you remember those times?

A. I grew up in a very beautiful time in the Church, in which we were carefully instructed in the faith, both at home and in the Catholic school, especially with the Baltimore Catechism. I remember the great beauty of the Sacred Liturgy, even in our little farming town, with beautiful Masses. And then, I'm of course most grateful for my parents who gave me a very sound up-bringing in how to live as a Catholic. So they were beautiful years.

Q. A friend of mine who was born after the Council used to say, "Not everything was good in the old days, but everything was better." What do you think about this?

A. Well, we have to live in whatever time the Lord gives us. Certainly, I have very good memories of growing up in the 1950's and early 1960's. I think what is most important is that we appreciate the organic nature of our Catholic Faith and appreciate the Tradition to which we belong and by which the Faith has come to us. (Since Vatican II many, perhaps even most Catholics are either ignorant of or wish to forget the "Tradition to which we belong.")

Q. Did you embrace the big changes after the Council with enthusiasm?

A. What happened soon after the Council - I was in the minor seminary at that time, and we followed what was happening at the Council - but the experience after the Council was so strong and even in some cases violent, that I have to say that, even as a young man, I began to question some things - whether this was really what was intended by the Council - because I saw many beautiful things that were in the Church suddenly no longer present and even considered no longer beautiful. (This reminds me of the question: How can what was sacred and beautiful in the past be suddenly no longer so?) I think, for instance, of the great tradition of Gregorian Chant or the use of Latin in the celebration of the Sacred Liturgy. Then also, of course, the so-called 'Spirit of Vatican II' influenced other areas - for instance, the moral life, the teaching of the Faith - and then we saw so many priest abandoning their priestly ministry, so many religious sisters abandoning religious life. (Yet we are still told by many that Vatican II was the best thing to ever happen to the Church. If that's true, then why have so many lost their faith?) So, there were definitely aspects about the post-conciliar period that raised questions.

Q. You were ordained a priest in 1975. Did you think that something in the Church had gone wrong?

A. Yes, I believe so. In some way, we lost a strong sense of the centrality of the Sacred Liturgy and, therefore, of the priestly office and ministry in the Church. I have to say, I was so strongly raised in the Faith, and had such a strong understanding of vocation, that I never could refuse to do what Our Lord was asking. But I saw that there was something that had definitely gone wrong. I witnessed, for instance, as a young priest the emptiness of the catachesis. The catechetical texts were so poor. Then I witnessed the liturgical experimentations - some of which I just don't even want to remember - the loss of the devotional life, the attendance at Sunday Mass began to steadily decrease: all of those were signs to me that something had gone wrong. (Yet the old grey-heads in the Church still pat themselves on the back for all the good work they have done in the spirit of Vatican II.)

Q. Would you have imagined in 1975 that, one day, you would offer Mass in the rite that was abandoned for the sake of renewal?

A. No, I would not have imagined it. Although, I also have to say that I find it very normal, because it was such a beautiful rite, and that the Church recovered it seems to me to be a very healthy sign. But, at the time, I must say that the liturgical reform in particular was very radical and, as I said before, even violent, and so the thought of a restoration didn't seem possible, really. But, thanks be to God, it happened. (And thanks to Benedict XVI!)

Q. Juridically, the Novus Ordo and the Traditional Latin Mass are the same rite. Is this also your factual experience when you celebrate a Pontifical High Mass in the new or the old rite?

A. Yes, I understand that they are the same rite, and I believe that, when the so-called New Rite or the Ordinary Form is celebrated with great care and with a strong sense that the Holy Liturgy is the action of God, one can see more clearly the unity of the two forms of the same rite. On the other hand, I do hope that - with time - some of the elements which unwisely were removed from the rite of the Mass, which has now become the Ordinary Form, could be restored, because the difference between the two forms is very stark. (Much was unwisely removed. Notice how he says that the difference between the two forms is "very stark.")

Q. In what sense?

A. The rich articulation of the Extraordinary Form, all of which is always pointing to the theocentric nature of the liturgy, is practically diminished to the lowest possible degree in the Ordinary Form. (I have often experienced this myself. Even in the most reverently of celebrated Novus Ordo Masses one still gets the sense that we are there to see/hear the priest or to gather together for a community gathering. Not so with the TLM--there it's all about God. I have also heard many priests say that they have found the TLM to be a truly humbling experience and that everything about the Mass turns their thoughts to God).

Q. The Synod on the Family has been a shock and sometimes even a scandal, especially for young Catholic families who are the future of the Church. Do they have reasons to worry?

A. Yes, they do. (No beating around the bush there. This is why I respect His Eminence so much--he doesn't patronize the faithful but tells them the truth.) I think that the report that was given at the mid-point of the session of the Synod, which just ended October 18th, is perhaps one of the most shocking public documents of the Church that I could imagine. (!!) And, so, it is a cause for very serious alarm and it's especially important that good Catholic families who are living the beauty of the Sacrament of Matrimony rededicate themselves to a sound married life and that also they use whatever occasions they have to give witness to the beauty of the truth about marriage which they are experiencing daily in their married life.

Q. High-ranking prelates keep giving the impression that "progress" in the Church lays in promoting the gay agenda and divorce ideology. Do they believe that these things will lead to a new springtime in the Church?

A. I don't know how they could believe such a thing, because, how could it be that, for instance, divorce - which the Pastoral Constitution on the Church Gaudium et Spes called a plague in society - how could it be that the promotion of homosexual acts, which are intrinsically evil, how could any good come from either? (Perhaps because some of the biggest advocates of Vatican II and its spirit ignore everything that the Council taught.) And, in fact, what we witness is that both result in a destruction of society, a breakdown of the family, the breakdown of the fiber of society, and, of course, in the case of unnatural acts, the corruption of human sexuality which is essentially ordered to marriage and to the procreation of children.

Q. Do you think that the main problem in vast territories of the Church is the lack of Catholic families and especially the lack of Catholic children? Should that not have been the focus of the Synod?

A. I believe so, very much so. The Church depends on sound Catholic family life, and it depends on sound Catholic families . I do believe that, where the Church is suffering most, there also marriage and family life is suffering. We see that when in marriage couples are not generous in bringing new human life into the world, their own marriages diminish, as well as society itself. We witness in many countries that the local population, which in many cases would be Christian, is disappearing because the birthrate is so low. And some of these places - for instance, where there is also a strong presence of individuals who belong to Islam - we find that the Muslim life is taking over in countries which were formerly Christian.

Q. In many parts of Western Europe and the U.S., the only parishes who still have children belong to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X, while whole dioceses are deserted. Do the bishops take notice of this?

A. I would imagine so. (Oh I think they take notice, but usually just to the detriment of Traditionalists.) I do not have direct experience of what you are describing. From my own time as bishop of La Crosse, Wisconsin and as archbishop of Saint Louis, Missouri, I have heard this said about dioceses in certain European nations where the dioceses are practically unable to continue, yet there is a strong presence of those who belong to the Society of St. Pius X. I cannot help but think that the bishops in those places must take note of it and must reflect upon it.

Q. Most practicing Catholics in an average parish in Western Europe and the U.S. are those who were baptized and catechized before the Council. Is the Church in these countries living from her past?

A. I think that my generation, for instance, was blessed to grow up at a time in which there was a strong practice of the Catholic Faith, a strong tradition of participation in Sunday Mass and the Sacred Liturgy, a strong devotional life, a strong teaching of the Faith- But in some way, I believe, we sadly took it for granted, and the same attention was not given to pass on the Faith as we had come to know it to the success of generations. Now what I see it that many young people are hungering and thirsting - and this already for some time - to know the Catholic Faith at its roots and to experience many aspects of the richness of the tradition of the Faith. So I believe that there is a recovery precisely of what had been for a period of time lost or not cared for in a proper manner. I think that now there is a rebirth at work among the young Catholics.

Q. Does the Synod on the Family have any plans to promote marriage and to encourage and support families with many children?

A. I sincerely hope so. I'm not part of the central direction or the group of cardinals and bishops who assist in the organization and direction of the Synod of Bishops. But I would certainly hope so.

Q. Many Catholics fear that, in the end, the Synod of Bishops will resort to doublespeak. "Pastoral" reasons are used to de facto change doctrine. Are such fears justified?

A. Yes, they are. In fact, one of the most insidious arguments used at the Synod to promote practices which are contrary to the doctrine of the Faith is the argument that, "We are not touching the doctrine; we believe in marriage as the Church has always believed in it; but we are only making changes in discipline." But in the Catholic Church, this can never be, because in the Catholic Church, her discipline is always directly related to her teaching. In other words: the discipline is at the service of the truth of the Faith, of life in general in the Catholic Church. And so, you cannot say that you are changing a discipline not having some effect on the doctrine which it protects or safeguards or promotes.

Q. The term "mercy" is used to change Church doctrine and even the New Testament in order to condone sin. Was this dishonest use of the term "mercy" exposed during the Synod?

A. Yes, it was. There were Synod Fathers who spoke about a false sense of mercy which would not take into account the reality of sin. I remember one Synod Father said, "Does sin no longer exist? Do we no longer recognize it?" (I don't think a lot of bishops and priests believe in sin anymore, unless we're talking about the "sin" of homophobia and judgementalism.) So, I believe that was very strongly addressed by certain Synod Fathers. The German Protestant - Lutheran - pastor who died during the Second World War, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, used an interesting analogy. He talked about "costly" grace and "cheap" grace. Well, there is no "cheap" grace. When God's life is given to us as it is in the Church, it demands of us a new way of life, a daily conversion to Christ, and we know God's mercy to the degree that we embrace that conversion and strive to turn every day our lives over again to Christ and to overcome our sinfulness and our weaknesses.

Q. Why is the term "mercy" used for adulterers, but not for pedophiles? In other words: Does the media decide when the Church is allowed to apply "mercy" and when not? (Because it would be politically incorrect to do so, and many bishops simply want to do what the world calls them to do.)

A. This, too, is a point that was made during the Synod. Mercy has to do with the person who, for whatever reason, is committing sin. One must always call forth in that person the good - in other words, call that person to be who or she really is: a child of God. But at the same time, one must recognize the sins, whether they be adultery or pedophilia or theft or murder - whatever it may be - as a great evils, as mortal sins and therefore as repellent to us. We can't accept them. The greatest charity, the greatest mercy that we can show to the sinner is to recognize the evil of the acts which he or she is committing and to call that person to the truth.

Q. Do we still have to believe that the Bible is the supreme authority in the Church and cannot be manipulated - not even by bishops or the Pope?

A. Absolutely! (!!!!) The word of Christ is the truth to which we are all called to be obedient and, first and foremost, to which the Holy Father is called to be obedient. Sometime during the Synod, there was reference made to the fullness of the power of the Holy Father, which we call in Latin plenitudo potestatis, giving the sense that the Holy Father could even, for instance, dissolve a valid marriage that had been consummated. And that's not true. The "fullness of power" is not absolute power. It's the "fullness of power" to do what Christ commands of us in obedience to Him. So we all follow Our Lord Jesus Christ, beginning with the Holy Father.

Q. An archbishop recently said, "We obviously follow the Church's doctrine on the family." Then he added, "...until the Pope decides otherwise." Does the Pope have the power to change doctrine?

A. No. This is impossible. (This is an example of papal idolatry, where the people see the Pope as God Himself and thus able to change doctrine. The Pope can do no such thing. We are called to listen, respect and obey the Pope in matters of doctrine, but even he cannot change the truths our Lord passed on to His Church.) We know what the teaching of the Church has been consistently. It was, for instance, expressed by Pope Pius XI in his encyclical letter Casti connubii. It was expressed by Pope Paul VI in Humanae vitae. It was expressed in a wonderful way by Pope St. John Paul II in Familiaris consortio. That teaching is unchanging. The Holy Father gives the service of upholding that teaching and presenting it with a newness and a freshness, but not changing it.

Q. Cardinals are said to wear crimson in order to represent the blood of the martyrs who died for Christ. Except for John Fisher, who was made a cardinal when he already was in jail, no cardinal has ever died for the Faith. What is the reason for this?

A. I don't know, I can't explain it. Certainly some cardinals have suffered greatly for the Faith. We think of Cardinal Mindszenty (1892-1975), for example, in Hungary, or we think of Cardinal Stepinac (1898-1960) in what was Yugoslavia. And we think of other cardinals of different periods in the history of the Church who had to suffer greatly to uphold the Faith. Martyrdom can take more than the bloody form. We talk about red martyrdom, but there is also a white martyrdom which involves faithfully teaching the truth of the Faith and upholding it, and perhaps being sent into exile as some cardinals have been, or suffering in other ways. But the important thing for the cardinal is to defend the Faith usque ad effusionem sanguinis - even to the outpouring of blood. So, the cardinal has to do everything he can to defend the Faith, even if it means the shedding of blood. But also all that goes before that. (I doubt many cardinals, or even bishops and priests nowadays would be willing to die for the Faith. I have no doubt, however, that Cardinal Burke would--he is that kind of man.)

Q. Your Eminence, a few quick observations: Who is four favorite Saint?

A. Well, the Blessed Mother obviously is the favorite of us all.

Q. That doesn't count!

A. [Laughs] I also have a great devotion to St.Joseph. But one Saint who has really helped me a great deal during my life, since the time I was a child and in the seminary, is St. Therese of Lisieux, the Little Flower. Her Little Way continues to be, for me, very helpful in my spiritual life.

Q. What is your favorite prayer?

A. The rosary. (That must account for the pictures I've seen of him in Rome holding a rosary while walking between appointments.)

Q. What is your favorite book?

A. I suppose the Catechism doesn't count. [Laughs]

Q. No, neither does the Bible.

A. I like also very much the writings of Blessed Columba Marmio (1858-1923), spiritual writings, and I'm also fond of the writings of Archbishop Fulton Sheen (1895-1979).

Q. What was your greatest moment as a priest?

A. I think my ordination to the priesthood itself. I keep thinking back to that and everything was there, everything has unfolded from there. What I found most beautiful on the priesthood was that, in the first five years of my priesthood, I hade a very intense priestly service in a parish with the Sacrament of Confession, with many confessions, and the celebration - obviously - of the Holy Mass, and then the teaching of the children in the Faith. Those memories - and then, for a brief period of three years, I taught in a Catholic high school - those are really, for me, treasured memories of my priesthood.

Q. Do you fear the Last Judgment?

A. Of course I do. One thinks, for instance, of all the responsibility that was mine, first as a priest, but even more so as a bishop and a cardinal, and it causes one to examine his conscience. I know there are things that I did that I could have done much better, and that causes me to be afraid. But I hope that the Lord will have mercy on me and I pray for that. (Ask yourself this: How many clerics fear the Last Judgment? Or are they so full of themselves, or so assured of universal salvation that they "know" they will go to Heaven?)

Q. Thank you, Your Eminence.

A. You're welcome."

I can't say it enough: Raymond Cardinal Burke is a remarkable and holy man. Thanks be to God that we have him around to be what often seems like the only voice of reason within the high levels of the Church. Would that he were our pope instead of Jorge Bergoglio. Maybe next time!

2014/12/cardinal-burkes-recent-interview.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-4207710840194684565Thu, 16 Oct 2014 03:48:00 +00002014-10-15T20:48:18.844-07:00The Synod CatastropheCatholic faithful--and other followers of Vatican happenings--will be well aware of the mad happenings coming out of the current Synod on the Family. I won't go into depth with details, but suffice it to say that a devious minority of those in attendance are advocating a change in Catholic doctrine regarding the indissolubility of marriage, reception of the Holy Eucharist by those in obstinate moral sin, and homosexual acts. They have said again and again that they want no change in doctrine, just how the Church approaches these subjects. Don't believe their lies! This devious minority--guided by their own pride and the machinations of Satan himself--want what cannot happen: a change in Catholic doctrine. These few cardinals and bishops must be stopped. We, the faithful, must pray unceasingly that the Holy Ghost will guide the cardinals, bishops, and especially the Holy Father to stand up for truth, justice, and traditional Catholic doctrine. Which brings me to my next thought: the Holy Father.

Where is His Holiness during this debacle? Why has he not spoken out against this work of Satan? Faithful (and I mean truly faithful) Catholics are fearful and confused by the proceedings of the Synod. We feel lost, directionless. Where is the Supreme Pontiff? Instead of direction from the Vicar of Christ on Earth, we have Raymond Cardinal Burke standing up for the truth. Now I have been a fan of Cardinal Burke for years, even before he was raised to the cardinalate. Indeed I have no greater respect and admiration for any cleric in the Church than I do for His Eminence, but why is the Church and the world getting more spiritual direction and comfort from a cardinal than we are from the Pope himself? His Eminence himself has stated in an <a href="; target="_blank">interview that it's long overdue for some serious leadership from His Holiness on these issues. Let's hope Pope Francis wakes up and starts fulfilling the job he was elected to do: lead one billion Catholics in the ways of the Truth, representing the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity on Earth. So far--in my estimation--the Holy Father has failed in his sacred duty.2014/10/the-synod-catastrophe.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Nick)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-14226519.post-5609029905464418458Fri, 08 Aug 2014 03:35:00 +00002014-08-07T20:35:56.275-07:00Our Christian Brethren in IraqWatch our displaced brethren in Iraq describe their fates under the Muslim-led ISIL. "Live and let live." Everyone should be guided by this principle, he said, which has a similar expression in Rome with the saying, "Move forward and let others do the same." (Shall we let others live in sin without so much as a warning about their eternal salvation?)
2. "Be giving of yourself to others." People need to be open and generous toward others, he said, because "if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid." (So all those saints who retreated into the desert to praise God alone were putrid water? One can be giving of oneself and still be withdrawn.)

3. "Proceed calmly" in life. The pope, who used to teach high school literature, used an image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the protagonist -- gaucho Don Segundo Sombra -- looks back on how he lived his life.

"He says that in his youth he was a stream full of rocks that he carried with him; as an adult, a rushing river; and in old age, he was still moving, but slowly, like a pool" of water, the pope said. He said he likes this latter image of a pool of water -- to have "the ability to move with kindness and humility, a calmness in life."

4. "A healthy sense of leisure." The pleasures of art, literature and playing together with children have been lost, he said. (I agree with him here.)

"Consumerism has brought us anxiety" and stress, causing people to lose a "healthy culture of leisure." Their time is "swallowed up" so people can't share it with anyone.

These values now extend to my advocacy for responsible government use of artificial intelligence (AI). AI is already embedded in state operations, assisting with decisions, services, and infrastructure, and more. Tennesseans deserve to know how these systems are governed and that they are set up in a way that can be helpful, but that also safeguards and protects Tennessee residents. The Freedom of Information Act allows any United States citizen the right to request to review public records as it relates to federal agencies. Concurrently, the Tennessee Public Records Act (Tenn. Code Ann. § 10‑7‑503 et seq.) allows Tennessee residents the right to request and view public records as it relates to Tennessee government. I submitted such a request to the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration regarding how the state is implementing AI within state systems. The agency acknowledged records were available, but did not release those records to me as required by Tennessee law. In accordance with Tennessee law, I filed lawsuit suit urging the court to hold the Department accountable for compliance with Tennessee law. Download/View Petition below: Bonds_PetitionDownload Please view my previous blog posts below where I respectively discuss in detail my concerns about AI implementation in Tennessee, the steps I’ve taken regarding public records, and my proposal for comprehensive AI legislation for Tennessee. On February 27, 2026, President Donald Trump ordered every federal agency to immediately stop using products made by Anthropic, the AI company that makes Claude, one of the most capable and widely used AI systems in the world. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth designated Anthropic a “supply chain risk to national security.” Hours later, rival company OpenAI announced it had struck a deal with the Pentagon to deploy its AI models inside the military’s classified network. The reason this happened? Anthropic refused to remove safety guardrails that prevented its technology from being used for mass domestic surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons that kill without human oversight. Read that again. The federal government’s demand that triggered the blacklisting of a $380 billion AI company was the removal of protections against surveilling American citizens and deploying weapons that kill people without a human deciding to pull the trigger. This is not fearmongering or a science fiction scenario, this is breaking news in the United States of America. What Just Happened and Why It Should Terrify Every American Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei made a public statement refusing the Pentagon’s ultimatum. He wrote: “In a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values. Some uses are also simply outside the bounds of what today’s technology can safely and reliably do.” The Defense Department’s response was to threaten invoking the Defense Production Act, a Cold War emergency law designed to commandeer industrial production, to force a private technology company to remove its own safety limits, to be used AGAINST American citizens! Over 330 employees from Google and OpenAI signed an open letter in solidarity with Anthropic’s stand, writing: “We hope our leaders will stand together to continue to refuse the Department of War’s current demands for permission to use our models for domestic mass surveillance and autonomously killing people without human oversight.” OpenAI CEO Sam Altman publicly sided with Amodei, but was simultaneously negotiating a deal its own deal with the Pentagon. To Recap, Anthropic (Claude) stood firm against the Pentagon by refusing to allow its AI platform to be used for mass domestic surveillance of Americans and fully autonomous weapons, meaning no human control or direction. In retaliation for Anthropic’s insistence on ethical boundaries and safeguards, President Trump canceled Anthropic’s government contract and basically blacklisted them from future federal contract opportunities. All the while, OpenAI took up the mantle and agreed to work with the Pentagon, insisting on AI safety guardrails. The United States, with Israel, began a military operation against Iran, which it seems the government used the Claude AI platform for some of its military operations against Iran. AI is extremely effective at achieving many goals, but it is equally dangerous without proper safeguards. The problem is that there isn’t a legislative mechanism in place to ensure AI isn’t being used in a manner that the Pentagon initially demanded of Anthropic, to which Anthropic said, NO. Congress has passed no comprehensive AI legislation that addresses this and a host of other issues pertaining to AI use in the United States. There is especially no mechanism for public oversight of how the most powerful AI systems on the planet are being deployed, whether by the government or by the private sector. Even so, Trump’s America’s AI Action Plan is designed to eliminate oversight and safeguards at the state level by threatening to sue states that try to protect their own citizens. Tennessee can be an innovative leader in AI without sacrificing necessary safeguards and protections for Tennesseans. AI Is Currently Operating in Tennessee without Sufficient Safeguards The Pentagon showdown is the dramatic headline. But it is only one dimension of an AI landscape that poses daily, immediate risks to ordinary Tennesseans, risks that have nothing to do with military weapons systems, but are equally disastrous. Right now, in Tennessee: AI is making hiring decisions that determine whether you get a job interview — and there is no law requiring those systems to be tested for racial or gender bias before they are deployed. AI is scoring criminal defendants before trial, influencing bail and sentencing decisions, without defendants having any right to know what data was used or how to contest the result. Social media platforms are using AI recommender systems that silently suppress your posts if they contain certain words or express certain political, religious, or social viewpoints, without you ever knowing this is happening. Deepfake AI systems are generating synthetic media of real people in fabricated scenarios designed to deceive. Tennessee’s ELVIS Act protects musicians from AI voice cloning, but it does not protect your neighbor running for school board. Foreign-government-controlled AI systems, including systems built by companies operating under the direction of the Chinese Communist Party, have been assessed by Tennessee’s own state security evaluators as posing serious data and national security risks. Those systems are not banned from operating in Tennessee today. Children and youth are daily targets of AI systems specifically engineered to maximize their time on screens through psychological exploitation such as variable reward loops, social comparison algorithms, or infinite scrolling designed to make them lose track of time. There is no state law stopping any of it. Why Tennessee Is Already Ahead, And Why That Matters Tennessee has more AI governance infrastructure than many other states in the country, but we are still incredibly vulnerable to the risks of unregulated AI integration. The ELVIS Act, signed in March 2024 and effective July 2024, made Tennessee the first state in the nation to pass AI-specific legislation. It is nationally recognized as the gold standard for AI likeness protection, and its core principles have been cited in proposed federal legislation. The Tennessee Information Protection Act (TIPA), established consumer data rights that lay the foundation for AI accountability: the right to access, correct, and delete your personal data. The STS Enterprise AI Policy (200-POL-007), developed by Tennessee’s Strategic Technology Solutions division, already requires state agencies to comply with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, the same technical standard adopted by the world’s leading AI governance frameworks. This policy established an AI Review Committee, a Standard Products List for approved AI tools, and a prohibition on unapproved AI on state systems. The Tennessee AI Advisory Council, operating under the Governor’s charter, has produced detailed Action Plans identifying six priority areas for AI governance: workforce, cybersecurity, public trust, civil rights, election integrity, and economic competitiveness. Tennessee’s own security evaluators conducted a formal assessment of DeepSeek AI in 2025, identifying it as a security risk. This prompted a state employee ban via executive order, but lacks broader legislative enforcement for private use or vendors. Tennessee has built a foundation, but Tennessee needs to continue with comprehensive legislation that safeguards us moving forward with the precariousness of AI. Tennessee has a golden opportunity to craft comprehensive AI legislation that positions the Volunteer State as a national leader, combining cutting-edge innovation, creativity, robust consumer privacy, and strong protections in a way that generates real economic wins, puts Tennessee on the map, and keeps everyday Tennesseans safe from emerging risks. Dr. Bonds’ Proposal for Comprehensive AI Legislation for Tennessee I am proposing the Tennessee Responsible and Unified Standards for Technology (TRUST) Act. This is a comprehensive framework, drawing perspective from efforts already in place, grounded in the National Institute Standards and Technology (NIST) Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0) and related standards, and built directly on the existing Tennessee statutory and administrative infrastructure. In the interest of transparency and responsible use of technology, I used artificial intelligence tools to assist with research organization, comparative analysis, and structural drafting while developing this comprehensive AI legislative proposal. All policy positions, legal interpretations, and final conclusions reflect my independent judgment and review. Overview of my proposed TRUST Act: Risk Classification: AI systems in Tennessee are classified into four tiers based on their potential for harm. The most dangerous practices – social scoring, domestic surveillance AI, manipulation, foreign-government-controlled AI on state systems – are prohibited outright. High-stakes AI systems used in criminal justice, hiring, healthcare, and education face rigorous oversight requirements. Social media recommender systems and chatbots face transparency and disclosure obligations. Human Oversight Requirements: No Tennessean should have their life materially changed by a machine alone. Codifying what Tennessee already requires for its own state AI systems (under ISC Gen AI Policy 3.00), the TRUST Act requires human review before any AI-automated decision with serious consequences takes effect, such as job terminations, bail determinations, benefit denials, healthcare decisions. The Right to Know and Contest: Extending the rights already established in TIPA/HB1181, Tennesseans would have the right to know when AI made a decision affecting them, to receive a plain-language explanation, and to contest the result before a human being. Algorithmic Bias Mitigation: AI systems making consequential decisions must be tested for racial, gender, age, and disability bias before deployment, monitored annually, and audited by independent evaluators every two years. This operationalizes the Tennessee Human Rights Act for the AI era. Generative AI Training Data Transparency: Any developer that commercially deploys a large-scale generative AI system in Tennessee must publicly disclose a high-level summary of their training data: what categories of sources were used, what date ranges they cover, what demographic groups are underrepresented, and whether any data originated from foreign-government-controlled systems. Viewpoint Discrimination and Platform Accountability: Social media platforms using AI to suppress or amplify content based on viewpoint, political opinion, or religious expression, without disclosing that they are doing it, are engaging in deceptive practices. The TRUST Act requires platforms to document their content moderation criteria, disclose their keyword filtering parameters publicly, and carry the burden of proving their enforcement is viewpoint-neutral. Before introduction, the Office of Legal Services will prepare a constitutional analysis specifically documenting why this provision is a commercial deception regulation, not a speech regulation Election Integrity: During the 90 days before any Tennessee election, Very Large Online Platforms cannot change their algorithmic parameters for election content without 30 days’ public notice. AI-generated synthetic media depicting candidates in false scenarios must carry prominent disclosure. Any government request to suppress election content must be reported within 72 hours. Child and Adolescent Protection: Addictive AI design targeting minors, behavioral profiling of children for commercial purposes, and collection of sensitive child data for AI training are prohibited. The Tennessee Artificial Intelligence Commission: A nine-member independent regulatory body, extending and formalizing the existing AI Advisory Council, with rulemaking authority, investigation powers, and civil penalty enforcement. Enforcement with a Calibrated Cure Period: Civil penalties up to $250,000 per violation for prohibited practices, trebled for willful conduct. Class D felony criminal liability for the most egregious violations. A private right of action for Tennesseans who suffer real harm. Prohibited-practice violations carry no cure period and are immediately actionable. High-risk AI compliance failures get a 60-day cure window for first offenses. Cures are not self-executing: the Commission determines whether a submitted cure is genuine, and cosmetic or terminological fixes that leave the underlying harm in place do not qualify. NIST AI RMF Integrated into TCA: The TRUST Act is the only state framework in the country that elevates the NIST AI Risk Management Framework to an explicit statutory baseline for all Tier 2 systems, directing the Commission to develop a Tennessee-specific NIST AI RMF Compliance Profile within 18 months, a sector-by-sector mapping of exactly which NIST subcategories apply to which deployment contexts in Tennessee. This turns a statutory reference into an operational compliance standard. Frontier AI Safety: The highest-capability AI systems, those trained on compute resources exceeding 10²⁶ floating-point operations (FLOPs), must publish a Frontier AI Safety Framework addressing catastrophic risk thresholds, third-party safety evaluations, cybersecurity of model weights, and a 72-hour incident notification protocol. Interstate AI Governance Compact: The Commission is authorized to negotiate a multi-state AI governance compact with other states to establish mutual recognition of conformity assessments and harmonized definitions. IMPLEMENTATION-READY PROPOSAL Because AI is not waiting for the legislative process to move at its normal pace, the TRUST Act framework includes five recommendations that can be deployed immediately, some requiring no new legislation at all: Recommendation 1 – Governor’s Executive Order: Using existing authority under T.C.A. § 4-1-201 and STS policy authority, the Governor can immediately mandate statewide compliance with 200-POL-007, ban Foreign-Adversary AI (including DeepSeek) from all state systems, require NIST AI RMF compliance for all state AI procurement, and direct the Attorney General to issue enforcement guidance on AI deception as an existing TCPA violation. Zero new legislation required. Recommendation 2 – Omnibus AI Safety Amendment Act: A single fast-track bill amending three already-enacted Tennessee statutes – TCPA (§ 47-18-101), TIPA/HB1181 (§ 47-18-2101), and the Election Code (§ 2-19-143) – to add AI-specific protections. This is the fastest legislative path because it builds on laws that already completed the legislative process. Recommendation 3 – AI Advisory Council Formalization Act: A short standalone bill elevating the Governor’s AI Advisory Council from an administrative body to a statutory commission with rulemaking authority, locking in the Council’s work product as durable institutional infrastructure regardless of future administrations. Recommendation 4 – AG and Human Rights Commission Enforcement Directive: Immediate guidance from the Tennessee Attorney General clarifying that AI manipulation and viewpoint-discriminatory algorithmic suppression are existing TCPA violations. No legislation required, as these are unfair and deceptive practices under law already on the books. Recommendation 5 – Child Safety and Mental Health AI Act: A standalone bill targeting the AI harms to children and adolescents Tennessee can be the state that proves responsible AI leadership is not only possible, but necessary. The foundation is already laid, the framework is already written, the moment is now. My work following the Genesis Mission, Trump’s November 2025 Executive Order unleashing AI across various sectors while simultaneously removing consumer safeguards that were previously in place have intensified my concern. Trump describes his urgency regarding the Genesis Mission on the same scale as the Manhattan Project…we all know how that turned out. Our federal and local governments appear to be operating with a level of opaqueness rather than transparency, and I have become increasingly concerned about this. Through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)(5 U.S.C. § 552) and the Tennessee Public Records Act (Tenn. Code Ann. § 10‑7‑503 et seq.), I requested several documents from the government to verify that the are operating transparently and in the best interest of the American people. I list in detail in my blog, Tennessee’s Dangerous Acceleration into Artificial Intelligence (AI), all of the information I requested from federal and state agencies who are instrumental in these dangerous policies. Federal Offices/Departments I sent FOIA/TPRA requests to: Federal Trade Commission United States Department of Commerce – National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) United States Department of Energy United States Department of Homeland Security – Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) United States Department of Justice – Office of Information Policy (OIP) United States Department of Justice – Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) United States Department of State The White House – Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration The law provides a specific timeline for how both the state and federal governments are required to handle FOIA or TPRA requests. My requests for records were denied stating no records were found, denied because the office deemed my requests were too comprehensive, or agencies are charging excessive fees to produce the information. I have submitted follow-up emails and requests to most of these, as it has been more time than the law allows for these requests. It is especially disconcerting when we cannot trust the government to comply with the laws it seeks to enforce on us. This quest to hold our government accountable for compliance and transparency is one that I have voluntarily taken because I see the need, but it also comes at an incredible cost and financial expense. I am a mental health counselor in Tennessee where a large percentage of my clients have Medicaid (Tenncare) insurance, and those reimbursement rates are negligible compared to other insurance rates. This means I don’t have any excess time or money to fight this uphill battle and need your support to continue these efforts, as many of these agencies are charging enormous fees to produce records, in an attempt to stop my efforts. Please consider contributing to my GoFundMe. AI Deregulation: A Green Light for Exploitation of the American People Trump secured MOUs from at least 24 different companies associated with AI and technology. These billionaires committed to contribute money to the Genesis Mission in exchange for contracts and policies that maximize these companies’ profits, while middle class Americans are living paycheck-to-paycheck. This wealth gap is compounded by the reality that Trump and these AI developers are profiting billions while systematically creating an environment surrounding AI that is completely risky and unstable, with the most vulnerable in our communities being the ones who are continually exploited. I am not anti-profit, anti-success, or even anti-Trump; I celebrate innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic strength, but I have and will always support and advocate for the protection of the most vulnerable in our communities who cannot defend themselves. We must act as digital gatekeepers for our kids; safeguarding the next generation is not partisan; it is a moral imperative that transcends politics. The European Union (EU) Prioritizes Consumer Safety Above Profits The complexity and challenges of AI are a global issue and isn’t just centralized within the United States. Aware that AI could supercharge misinformation, entrench bias, exploit children, and undermine fundamental rights, the European Union chose a proactive path, implementing robust protections before these harms became irreversible. Recognizing that people, especially children and the most vulnerable are susceptible to exploitation, the EU AI Act contains explicit guidelines for AI platforms: Bans unacceptable-risk AI uses, including manipulative subliminal techniques, real-time biometric surveillance in public spaces, and AI exploiting age-related vulnerabilities (e.g., manipulative techniques targeting minors) Mandates risk management, transparency, and human oversight for high-risk systems used in hiring, education, and critical infrastructure Requires general-purpose AI models like ChatGPT, Copilot, and Grok to disclose capabilities, publish technical documentation, report systemic risks, and clearly indicate users are interacting with AI Mandates safeguards against deepfakes, grooming risks, and harmful content Imposes substantial fines for violations. US politicians and AI platform owners and developers have stated that the EU AI Act is too restrictive and stifles creativity. Translation: they don’t want anything that might reduce their ability to maximize profits, or threatened their perception of their superiority. The moral high ground he US often takes regarding foreign policy goes out the window when the wealthy continue to exploit its citizens in order for 5% of the population to remain wealthy and in power. Article 5 in the EU AI Act list specific rules and safeguards for their citizens as it relates to how companies implement AI. Rather than utilizing the EU’s policy as a framework to establish one for the United States, Trump and his billionaire tech leaders criticize and demonize the EU’s plan, disregarding the real and present dangers AI presents to the world. Instead, Trump is focused on maximizing his profits and gaslighting the American people. The United States Needs Comprehensive AI Legislation The horrors of the Epstein files are the result of powerful men and women being allowed to exploit children for their own selfish and sadistic pleasures. Continuing with the Genesis Mission in the manner Trump has initiated is a continuation of that same level of exploitation. Trump reroutes power and financial gain to himself and those who have helped him rise to power, all the while touting his quest for “draining the swamp” and finding “waste, fraud, and abuse.” A system that rewards and prioritizes wealth for a select few, while systematically removing food, insurance benefits, and other basic needs of a civilized culture, has a humanity that is questionable. I researched the proposed bills that have been offered by members of congress regarding AI, and it seems to me that they are offering fragments of policy ideas that never make it out of Committees, but they are also vastly inept to address the current state of AI in the US, much less the cavalier and reckless approach Trump is taking via the Genesis Mission through Executive Order. The following are House/Senate bills you can research yourself to see: H.R. 7294 H.R. 7218 H.R. 7158 H.R. 7151 H.Res 1007 H.R. 7110 S. 3680 H.R. 7064 H.R. 7058 S. 3586 A comprehensive AI governance at both the federal and state level can and should be implemented. The capacity for innovation and harm through AI is profound, and the United States has a history of exploiting its citizens in favor of ego, racism, and incessant need for power and dominance. Slavery & Jim Crow laws Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment MKUltra Program Japanese American Internment and more The EU AI Act provides an effective starting point to implement protective measures for AI in the United States: Risk-based classification system — Categorize AI systems by risk level: prohibit unacceptable-risk practices (e.g., social scoring, manipulative subliminal techniques); heavily regulate high-risk systems (e.g., in employment, education, critical infrastructure, law enforcement) with strict obligations like risk management, data governance, transparency, human oversight, accuracy, robustness, and cybersecurity; impose lighter transparency rules for limited-risk AI (e.g., chatbots, deepfakes); leave minimal-risk AI largely unregulated or voluntary. Clear prohibitions and exceptions — Outright ban high-harm practices (e.g., untargeted facial scraping, emotion inference in workplaces/education except for safety/medical reasons, real-time remote biometric ID in public spaces with narrow, safeguarded law enforcement exceptions requiring impact assessments, authorization, and registration). Obligations tailored to roles and general-purpose AI — Place primary duties on providers (developers) for high-risk and general-purpose/foundation models (e.g., documentation, copyright compliance, risk assessments, adversarial testing for systemic-risk models); assign lighter responsibilities to deployers (users), importers, and distributors; support downstream transparency and incident reporting. Governance, innovation support, and enforcement — Establish centralized oversight (e.g., an expanded NIST AI Safety Institute or new federal AI Office), advisory bodies, codes of practice, and regulatory sandboxes to foster innovation (especially for SMEs/startups); include market surveillance, incident reporting, penalties (tiered fines), and phased implementation timelines to allow transition and adaptation. We cannot keep sacrificing safeguards and protections for Americans so the powerful stay rich. Demand a comprehensive federal AI legislation for our children, our families, and our future…otherwise, history might repeat itself. I support technological… The post Tennessee’s Dangerous Acceleration Into Artificial Intelligence (AI) appeared first on Alvin Bonds II, Ph.D.. Tennessee wants to pioneer AI, but its leaders are throwing Tennesseans to the wolves in the process. I support technological advancement and Tennessee’s economic growth, but the Tennessee legislature’s approach, mirroring gutted federal protocols, puts us in the path of chaos, unpredictability, and consumer AI safety risks. Despite talk of “responsible AI,” Tennessee advances development while relying on gutted federal protocols, leaving Tennesseans exposed to systems that favor the wealthy over the vulnerable. This is not speculation…it is a documented policy drift. I’m not anti-technology, anti-Trump, or anti-Tennessee; my concern is AI implementation that prioritizes politicians’ profits and media/AI companies’ access while sacrificing safeguards for Tennesseans. This unfolds quietly while President Trump “floods the zone” with headlines from kidnapping foreign leaders, threatening to invade Greenland, removing the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), all while supporting the Department of Justice (DOJ) as it disregards the Epstein Transparency Act, shielding wealthy pedophiles who exploited children through Epstein Sex Trafficking Ring. Genesis Mission Recklessness: Trump’s Manhattan Project Redux The Genesis Mission is a United States Department of Energy project that President Trump quietly implemented via Executive Order on November 24, 2025, during the holiday season amid various breaking news stories, that is continuing to progress behind the scenes. Through the “Big Beautiful Bill,” Republicans in Congress cut funding to the following major programs to in order to fund this AI endeavor: Medicaid: $800–$990 billion Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, food stamps): $187 billion Student loans / Higher education programs: elimination of Grad PLUS loans, caps on Parent PLUS and unsubsidized Stafford loans starting July 2026) These cuts strip benefits that were once earmarked for ~37 million children (720K Tennessee kids) ~15.4 million disabled (288K Tennesseeans) ~7.7 million seniors (144K Tennesseeans) SNAP Food Benefits for 42 million Americans (1.44M Tennesseeans) Tennessee is a central player of the Genesis Mission through Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where Trump has basically commissioned ORNL to drive AI at high speed, but without a safety belt and air bags! We are on a collision course headed for disaster! When Trump created the Genesis Mission via Executive Order, he revoked Biden’s previous EO regarding AI (Executive Order 14110), and without getting completely technical, there are several safeguards for Americans that were in place that Trump has sacrificed to maximize speed and profitability: No Congressional oversight No legislative safeguards AI consumer protections ignored Bias, Civil Rights protection, and discrimination prevention Reversed Trump is sacrificing the most vulnerable Americans (Tennesseans) through his approach to advancing the United States’ footing in the AI realm, which is driven by Trump’s greed and dictatorial hunger for power. This is evident in the lack of congressional consultation and support, even though Trump has majorities in both the House, Senate, and the Supreme Court; additionally, the individuals and businesses who have committed to financially supporting the Genesis Mission basically have a quid pro quo relationship with Trump and by association the federal government. Practically, this means that because entities such as OpenAI (ChatGPT), xAI (Elon Musk & X/Twitter), Microsoft (Copilot), etc. have made financial contributions to Donald Trump, he is giving them unrestricted access to federal government systems, which includes military plans, intelligence reports, and even Americans’ private data. That is not governance…it’s a voluntary hostile takeover at the expense of Americans. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Safeguards Were In Place But Trump Revoked Them The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a U.S. federal agency that develops technical standards and guidance to support innovation, security, and reliability in areas like Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the area of AI, NIST created the AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0), a voluntary blueprint that helps organizations identify, measure, and manage risks such as bias, security vulnerabilities, and unreliable model behavior across the AI lifecycle. The framework’s core goal is to promote trustworthy AI by encouraging practices that improve transparency, fairness, accountability, robustness, and alignment with legal and societal expectations, while still being flexible and non‑binding for industry. NIST’s AI RMF 1.0, released in 2023, was built with those goals to manage risk with AI, organizing real risk work into four functions – Govern, Map, Measure, Manage – meant to ensure institutions to actually identify, monitor, and mitigate harms before AI systems are deployed on the public. Trump signed Executive Order 14179, “Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence,” which revoked Biden’s AI safety order and launched a new America’s AI Action Plan designed to remove “burdens” on AI development. Trump’s plan explicitly instructs NIST to revise the AI RMF to eliminate references to DEI, misinformation, and climate-related risks, precisely the categories that most directly protect vulnerable communities, democratic discourse, and environmental safety. The State of Tennessee’s Strategic Technology Solutions (STS) Roadmap for Generative AI explicitly commits the state to alignment with NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF 1.0), which is backed by research and appropriate safeguards for consumers, but it directly conflicts with Trump’s Winning the Race – America’s AI Action Plan and Executive Order 14179 (Genesis Mission). Tennessee State officials are not only producing conflicting statements and plans for protecting Tennesseans, but also are implying that federal oversight will provide sufficient protection as Tennessee explores AI integration, including the State’s active communication with OpenAI and xAI over the integration of ChatGPT and/or Grok into State systems, but without any legislative safeguards in place. Tennessee government officials are basically tossing Tennesseans out of a proverbial plane without a parachute and just saying, “Just trust us…you’ll be okay.” THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE! Neither the federal government or Tennessee government has provided sufficient legislative safeguards for venturing into the AI realm, but Trump has secured governmental contracts for leaders in the AI and similar fields who have been financial supporters for him. As it stands, there are few safeguards or laws in place that informs and protects the public from nefarious use: The White House can post an AI-modified image of an individual that gives a false impression of what actually happened (Source) The Department of Defense and Pentagon may be incorporating xAI & Elon Musk’s Grok into its systems. (Source) Elon or xAI developers could program Grok to classify individuals or entire communities as “biological threats” based on health records, travel history, or genetic data. (Source) Tennessee has actively been having meetings with OpenAI representatives, which means ChatGPT could be integrated into Tennessee systems, which means Grok and ChatGPT could be deciding who gets evacuated or aided first in a weather or nuclear crisis, embedding programmed biases into life-or-death decisions. (Source) Consider how effective an actual Matrix simulation would be if weaponized on a group of people or population. AI has the capability of creating quantum simulations that create hyper-realistic illusions for psychological operations, blurring the line between reality and state-crafted deceptions. (Source) A foreign or domestic operative could use AI-integrated controls allowing selective blackouts of zip codes or smart homes flagged for “non-compliant” energy use or online activity. (Trump alluded to the United States having the ability to control power grids…they could target any zip code and restrict services for any reason they justify. (Source) It is also possible that AI can engineer contagious diseases that selectively harm vulnerable groups, exploiting disparities for devastating effects. (Source) These aren’t just worst case scenarios, these are actual possibilities that can happen today because there are not any legal or structural safeguards in place to mitigate these concerns and protect Americans from AI exploitation and weaponization. We voted to send lawmakers to state and national offices not for them to solely boost their ego and financial standing, we voted for them to advocate and create a state and country where we can grow, thrive, and be safe. Today is January 23, 2026 and the deadline of the next phase of the Genesis Mission was submitted per the instructions of the Genesis Mission Executive Order. Backdoor governing is not what our founding fathers set up through the Constitution that is FOR THE PEOPLE. Today, I filed multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with federal agencies, as well as a Public Records Request to the State of Tennessee, seeking information from specific department of governments. Federal Offices/Departments I sent FOIA requests to: Federal Trade Commission United States Department of Commerce – National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) United States Department of Energy United States Department of Homeland Security – Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) United States Department of Justice – Office of Information Policy (OIP) United States Department of Justice – Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) United States Department of State The White House – Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration I have received confirmations from each of these that my request(s) were received. My dogs were barking which required my dire threats to quieten them as I answered the door.

Maybe you have heard of our weather and the unusually cold temperatures and large amount of snow that has fallen in the last 24 hours. I live just south of Interstate 64 in Southern Indiana and you may have seen the news about the closed Interstate and stranded motorists on the national news.

A man in his early fifties, about my own age, stood at the door. He was wearing tennis shoes, jeans, a field jacket and sock hat. His glasses were frosted and his pale white hands and reddened knuckles gave witness that he wore no gloves.

He told me he was lost and asked for directions to a certain address. I told him that he missed his mark by a mile and a half and asked him where his car was. He said he was walking.

I invited him in and sat a chair for him by the warm air from the furnace vent. He was shivering uncontrollably and a faint whiff of alcohol was on his breath. I asked if I could fix him something to eat but he refused and accepted a hot cup of coffee.

My wife talked to him as he warmed himself and I could hear him speaking as I prepared his fresh coffee.

My son heard his voice and came into the living room to sit and listen, and to watch, just in case.

His story unfolded.

He was homeless veteran, he had been sleeping in a box, under a bridge over the Ohio river, several miles to the West. He had decided that it was too cold and he might freeze to death if he didn't find safe shelter with more than a cardboard box to keep him warm. About midnight, he had left his meager possessions and headed for his sisters home, a mile or so from my own home. He had walked past in the blowing snow and the dark but continued walking. He was lost, confused and probably somewhat drunk. Hypothermia can add confusion to even the sober mind.

As he spoke, I realized that he had mental problems as do many of the homeless.

There are places that provide refuge for the indigent, I'm sure he knew, but they don't accept anyone who is intoxicated, which I'm also sure he knew.

He drank his coffee then asked me if I would drive him to his sisters home. He then offered me two dollars. Of course I refused the money but offered to take him where he wanted to go.

I intended to take measures to see after him and he seemed anxious to leave.

As I drove, he told me that his sister was out of town but he had permission to use her house in an emergency. I was worried that he was just lying for reasons of his own but I was determined to see the thing through, even if I had to call the police to ensure his well-being through this cold weather.

As we drove up to the house, there was a porch light on and smoke coming from the chimney vent. Even so, it was apparent that there was no one home, the snow around the house was undisturbed.

I asked him if he was sure he could get in, he said, "Yes, she (his sister) told me where the key is." He reached out his hand, as if for a hand shake, and when I offered mine, pulled my hand to his lips and kissed it saying, "God bless you".

I was profoundly embarrassed but stayed long enough to see him dig around in the snow and find a key, unlock the door and wave goodbye.

I drove home, my thoughts disturbed, by the events that had taken place.

My (now departed 1st) wife was relieved as I returned and I started preparing food (very early,) for Christmas Eve. As I cut up fruit for salad and prepared the turkey for baking, my son came up behind me, hugged me and kissing my head, said, "Dad, you did a good thing."

Again, I was embarrassed, not by my son's hug and kiss but by his praise.

It was the right thing to do.

My son told me that he tries to help the homeless ones that hang around his place of employment. We spoke of how little we can actually do for them and I was proud of my son for being a good man and doing the right thing.

As I continued to prepare food for Christmas Eve, my thoughts drifted to a couple seeking shelter in Bethlehem and the birth of the Lamb of the New Covenant, and I felt God's Peace.

May God's Peace and blessings be with you all!
Merry Christmas.

Warren

Post Note:

First, please watch "Mary, Did You Know?" as performed by the Pentatonix, an a capella group. I hope that you love it as much as I do:

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" src="; width="500">

====

Twenty years ago, I first posted this true story -yes it actually happened- and I am always asked to brush the cobwebs off and re-post it for Christmas. The post note is changed to reflect my feelings and events.

"Mary, Did You Know?" by the Pentatonix, is my favorite Christmas Carol. If you haven't heard this version before or if you would like to hear it again, I urge you to put on your headphones or good speakers and have a listen.

Once again, and to all my friends -and you know who you are!-
Merry Christmas!
Warren and AOW

2024/12/posted-by-warren-originally-posted-on.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Warren)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4320479736034351430.post-4935641189322353931Tue, 07 Mar 2023 14:08:00 +00002025-01-02T10:59:41.265-06:00bloggingQuitting — At Least For Now
<a href="; style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="261" data-original-width="500" src="; width="400" />
After <a href="; target="_blank">recently taking a break because of tax season, I have decided that my life is better without the ugly intrusions that active blogging demands.

Besides, I'm sick of the doom-scrolling and the doom-saying that honest political-blogging requires.

It's time to enjoy life rather than having a blight upon life!

I'm done — at least for now.

Comments are closed.
2023/03/quitting-at-least-for-now.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Always On Watch)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4320479736034351430.post-6986550701113853402Tue, 28 Feb 2023 08:11:00 +00002023-02-28T02:11:00.333-06:00government bureaucracyIRSpersonaltechnologyA Brief Pause HereI'm in tax mode for a few more days as I gather materials and upload them to Tax Caddy:
<a href="; style="display: block; padding: 1em 0px; text-align: center;"><img alt="" border="0" data-original-height="2004" data-original-width="3000" src="; width="320" />
Temporarily on comment moderation.

Back soon!
2023/02/a-brief-pause-here.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Always On Watch)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4320479736034351430.post-3102818585468706202Sat, 25 Feb 2023 08:14:00 +00002023-02-25T02:14:00.315-06:00break from politicsculturelifeMusicpersonalvideoMusical Interlude(For politics, please scroll down)

My best friend of some 53 years died on February 9; circumstances were such that I didn't find out until February 22. Vance also declined to rule out reinstating family separation policies if Trump is re-elected. And Monday, Vance amplified “a false claim that Haitian immigrants are abducting and eating pets.” America’s Voice’s Executive Director Vanessa Cárdenas shared grave concerns in a statement yesterday on the latest comments by the Trump/Vance ticket: “The dehumanization and violent demagoguery is not new but that doesn’t make it less dangerous. His proposed mass ‘bloody’ expulsion of millions is beyond reprehensible. This is not just about immigrant communities, it is fundamentally about who we are as a nation. Mass arrest and deportation is the signature immigration and economic issue of his campaign and a keystone of his larger plans for violent retribution against anyone who doesn’t fit into his vision of MAGA America.” Here are some of the latest headlines highlighting Trump/Vance anti-immigrant extremism: The Atlantic: Trump Promises a ‘Bloody Story’ “At a campaign rally in Wisconsin yesterday, Trump talked about his plans for “mass deportation” of border-crossers. “In Colorado, they’re so brazen, they’re taking over sections of the state,” he claimed, presumably alluding to reports of gang activity in an apartment building in a Denver suburb. “And you know, getting them out will be a bloody story. They should never have been allowed to come into our country. Nobody checked them.” ABC 15: JD Vance says ‘absolutely’ on raids, sweeps to conduct mass deportations “When it comes to former President Donald Trump’s immigration plan to conduct mass deportation, Vance said “absolutely” when asked if this would involve sweeping raids to find the roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.” NBC News: Vance declines to rule out the use of family separations if Trump is re-elected “Republican vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance declined on Friday to rule out the use of family separations — a policy from Donald Trump’s first term in office — if he and the former president win back the White House, even as Homeland Security officials are currently working to reunify over 1,000 children with their families.” The Guardian: Neo-Nazi and far right groups seize on Trump’s anti-immigration rhetoric “Neo-Nazi groups and the online far right are latching on to the anti-immigration rhetoric coming from Donald Trump’s campaign for the White House in an effort to recruit new supporters and spread their extremism to broader audiences.” Salon: Trump, lying about migrants and crime, says mass deportations “will be a bloody story” “But Trump used the false story to segue to his proposed mass deportation of at least 12 million undocumented people, telling supporters that, “getting them back will be a blood story.” The Hill: Vance pushes false accusations of Haitians eating pets “GOP vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance (Ohio) on Monday amplified a false claim that Haitian immigrants are abducting and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio, despite the city’s police department denial of any such incidents.” Axios AM: America braces for chaos Trump and his allies — especially Elon Musk — have promoted the false claim that Democrats are deliberately “importing” millions of undocumented immigrants to illegally vote in the election. First, Donald Trump will lie. Second, Donald Trump will promote his extreme anti-immigrant ideology. Over the past few years, we’ve seen him do both – a lot. He has told false stories, cited misleading data, and invented facts to justify a dangerous and destructive anti-immigrant agenda. Now he’s using the same lies to advance his extreme mass deportation plans. As we prepare for tonight’s debate, let’s look back at 51 of the times Trump was fact-checked for lies about the border and immigration: Trump said, “They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement “is so much better than the old, very costly & anti-USA NAFTA deal, that just by the money we save, MEXICO IS PAYING FOR THE WALL!” Fact Check: Experts Say It Won’t Trump said, Biden “already [has] the right to CLOSE DOWN THE BORDER NOW.” Fact Check: Unsupported Trump said, “That’s why they are allowing these people to come in — people that don’t speak our language — they are signing them up to vote.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump campaign promoted an outlandish false claim that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, have abducted and eaten their neighbors’ pets. Fact Check: Absolutely no evidence. Trump said, “It’s possible that non-citizen voters were responsible for Obama’s 2008 victory in North Carolina.” Fact Check: Pants on Fire Trump said, “behind me and to the right was a large screen that was displaying a chart of border crossings under my leadership, the numbers were absolutely amazing.” Fact Check: Mostly False Trump claimed the U.S. has “thousands of judges — border judges — thousands and thousands.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, “We have to break up families” entering the country illegally, because of “bad laws that the Democrats gave us.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, 15 million people have crossed the border. Fact Check: FALSE Trump has repeatedly stated and posted falsely that undocumented immigrants are receiving Social Security and Medicare benefits and threatening the solvency of both programs. Fact Check: This is another one of Trump’s numerous lies Trump said, “The Democrats want to have no borders. They want to get rid of ICE.” Fact Check: Distorts the Facts Trump said, Because of “people that should’ve never been allowed to come over the border,” crime is “going through the roof.” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said, “You know, Mexico has the strongest immigration laws in the world. There’s nobody who has stronger. I guess some have the same, but you can’t get any stronger than what Mexico has.” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said, “the Biden administration has an open-border policy.” Fact Check: False. Trump said, “[W]e’re up to 259 miles right now, of great powerful wall that’s really working, because if you look at the numbers, in addition to the fact that Mexico for various reasons has 27,000 soldiers on our southern border to keep people out of our country […] and we have great, great numbers.” Fact Check: Misleading Trump said, “Unknown Middle Easterners are mixed in” a migrant caravan coming to the US border. Fact Check: No evidence Trump said, “The military will build the remaining sections of the Wall.” Fact Check: This lacks evidence. Trump said, “The biggest threat to your unions is millions of people coming across the border, because you’re not gonna have your jobs anymore.” Fact Check: Mostly False Trump said, “I hate the children being taken away. The Democrats have to change their law. That’s their law.” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said, “88,000 children are missing. … And unfortunately, many of those children are dead, just like many of the hostages held by Hamas.” Fact Check: Three Pinocchios Trump said, “Border Patrol Agents are not allowed to properly do their job at the Border because of ridiculous liberal (Democrat) laws like Catch & Release.” Fact Check: Three Pinocchios Trump said, three border agents in San Diego “were very badly hurt through getting hit with rocks and stones.” Fact Check: Unsupported Trump said, Says Sen. Charles Schumer “repeatedly supported a physical barrier in the past along with many other Democrats. They changed their mind only after I was elected president.” Fact Check: Mostly False Trump said, A Trump television ad shows Mexicans swarming over “our southern border.” Fact Check: Pants on Fire Trump said, “MEXICO IS PAYING FOR THE WALL through the many billions of dollars a year that the U.S.A. is saving through the new Trade Deal, the USMCA, that will replace the horrendous NAFTA Trade Deal.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, “That’s why they are allowing these people to come in — people that don’t speak our language — they are signing them up to vote.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, Joe Biden “is letting millions of people from jails, from prisons, from insane asylums, from mental institutions, drug dealers pour in.” Fact Check: Pants on Fire Trump said, “Mexico, as you know, as of yesterday, has been starting to apprehend a lot of people at their southern border coming in from Honduras and Guatemala and El Salvador. And they’ve — they’re really apprehending thousands of people. And it’s the first time, really, in decades that this has taken place. And it should have taken place a long time ago.” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said, “Crime in Germany is up 10% plus (officials do not want to report these crimes) since migrants were accepted. Others countries are even worse. Be smart America!” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said, “Virtually 100% of the new jobs under Biden have also gone to illegal aliens.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, Pointing to a chart on illegal immigration, “See the arrow on the bottom? That was my last week in office. That was the lowest number in history.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, Claimed the Biden administration “flew 325,000 migrants” into the U.S. from “parts unknown.” Fact Check: Misleading Trump said, “Mexico is paying for the Wall” through the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Fact Check: Experts Say It Won’t Trump said, “The same people that raided Israel are pouring into our once beautiful USA, through our TOTALLY OPEN SOUTHERN BORDER, at Record Numbers.” Fact Check: Pants on Fire Trump said, “Last month, 20,000 migrant children were illegally brought into the United States. … These children are used as human pawns by vicious coyotes and ruthless gangs.” Fact Check: No Evidence Trump said, “[W]e’re completing the wall, like I said I would.” Fact Check: Far Short of Promise Trump said, a proclamation by President Joe Biden to limit asylum eligibility “establishes an annual minimum of approximately 2 million illegal alien border crossers.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, Democrats “are KILLING SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE by allowing the INVASION OF THE MIGRANTS” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said on unaccompanied children who crossed the border, “88,000 children are missing under this administration … And unfortunately, many of those children are dead.” Fact Check: Distorts the Facts Trump said, Barrier will be steel rather than concrete “at the request of Democrats” Fact Check: FALSE. Trump said, “illegal traffic” has declined from 72 percent to 96 percent in San Diego, El Paso, Yuma and Tucson “once the wall was up.” Fact Check: This is misleading. Trump said, in the last 2 years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records. Fact Check: Out of context Trump said, border crossings have created “flat-out economic warfare on African American and Hispanic American families and workers. These people are taking the jobs of African Americans, they’re taking the jobs of Hispanic Americans. … Unions are being absolutely slaughtered.” Fact Check: No Evidence Trump claimed that only 3 percent of those who were released after being caught illegally crossing the border show up for their immigration hearings. Fact Check: Unsupported Trump said, for the “first time” in “decades” Mexico “has been starting to apprehend a lot of people at their southern border coming in” from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, 15 million people have crossed border Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, “Every single Democrat in the U.S. Senate has signed up for the open borders, and it’s a bill, it’s called the ‘open borders bill.’” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, Democrats want “open borders.” Fact Check: FALSE Trump said, “We’re releasing them [undocumented immigrants] into sanctuary cities almost exclusively. You know, sanctuary cities want them. But once we started releasing them, they didn’t want them. So, you know, they want them, they talk — they talk a good game. But once you start saying: ‘Okay. Congratulations. Here are some.’ And they don’t want them. And they fight very hard. So, the whole sanctuary city thing is a big scam.” Fact Check: Four Pinocchios Trump said, “We proudly handed the Biden administration the most secure border in history. All they had to do was keep this smooth-running system on autopilot.” Fact Check: Mostly False The post 51 Times Donald Trump Lied About Immigration appeared first on America's Voice. Pre-Debate Cheat Sheet – When Trump and Republicans Say the Following on Immigration… /content/pre-debate-cheat-sheet-when-trump-and-republicans-say-the-following-on-immigration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=pre-debate-cheat-sheet-when-trump-and-republicans-say-the-following-on-immigration Tue, 10 Sep 2024 16:06:33 +0000 Key Points: Trump’s unsparing deportation plan of Dreamers and long-settled immigrants is the most consequential immigration topic; GOP has spent more than $472M on negative immigration ads, including dangerous “invasion” conspiracy. When Republicans advance the lie about non-citizen voting or use immigration to sow doubts about election integrity: Our electoral system already has safeguards in place to ensure our elections are secure. Studies show that non-citizens illegally voting is almost nonexistent. Per the Cato Institute, less than 1 percent and closer to 0 is the percentage of non-citizens who have ever registered to vote let alone tried to vote. The election lie about non-citizen voting is a political attack that seeks to fuel election denialism and encourage another violent Jan. 6-style attack on our democracy. House Republicans, with the support of the Trump campaign and the entire Republican political apparatus seem poised to repeat budget and government shutdown brinkmanship all to advance the false narrative of widespread voter fraud. Read this recent Univision op-ed from Vanessa Cárdenas, “How Trump’s relentless anti-immigrant focus is tied to his threats to democracy,” read our fact sheet on the myth of non-citizen voting and watch a recording of the recent press briefing with America’s Voice, the Brennan Center for Justice, The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, UnidosUS, and Declaration for American Democracy When Republicans highlight their mass deportation plans: The Trump team plans to deport every undocumented immigrant. That means, “no one is off the table,” as they have made clear, and that includes Dreamers and other long-settled immigrants, in addition to recent arrivals. See this AV memo for more on the economic and moral consequences of mass deportation and its unsparing focus) A mass roundup, military detention camps and mass deportation would tear apart communities and involve red-state National Guard troops going door-to-door in blue-state communities throughout America to detain, purge, and deport millions. Mass deportation would be economically catastrophic, destroying vital American industries, skyrocketing inflation, and evicting millions of homeowners, entrepreneurs, essential workers, healthcare providers, and teachers. See this excellent Boston Globe op-ed from leading expert Michael Ettlinger, “Trump’s plan to vaporize the economy” for more and these two detailed papers by Ettlinger and economist Robert Lynch summarizes the economic and social science research on teh impact of past mass deportation efforts here and here. Also read this Washington Monthly deep-dive on the economic toll of mass deportation. When Republicans highlight crimes and the tragic killings of U.S. citizens by immigrants: The data is clear: immigrants and immigration are not correlated with crime. Crime has fallen, and claims of an increase in crime rates committed by migrants have been widely and repeatedly debunked. It’s also true that Donald Trump and allies have been using isolated crimes committed by immigrants for attempted political gain in a manner that seeks to stir hate and fear – strategic racism. It’s an ugly tactic with a sordid history designed to advance a narrative that migrants and asylum seekers are dangerous threats when the facts demonstrate otherwise (in study after study, and study, and study, and more study, the facts are clear: immigrants have lower crime rates than the rest of the population) When Republicans attack Biden for granting “mass amnesty”: There is no mass amnesty; there is a vision for a balanced approach to secure our border and offer legal pathways that the American public overwhelmingly supports. The recent Biden executive actions are common sense measures to allow law-abiding spouses of U.S. citizens and Dreamer college graduates new opportunities to stay and contribute to this country. These are exactly the people the Trump plan would seek to separate through the mass deportation agenda. When Republicans promise Trump would “fix” immigration in his second term: Trump’s second-term immigration vision would be a disaster for all Americans. Beyond his unsparing mass deportation plans, Trump and Republicans are lining up behind a set of immigration policies that would slash legal immigration, destroy American industries, and break apart, rather than modernize, our immigration system. Read the Niskanen Center’s assessment of Project 2025 and immigration, which includes proposals to block federal financial aid for “up to two-thirds of all American college students” if their state permits Dreamers to access in-state tuition, repealing TPS and terminating DACA status for Dreamers by eliminating resources for processing renewal applications, and eviscerating legal immigration by suspending application intakes. When Republicans claim the border was “secure” during Trump’s term: Trump spent billions on a useless wall that could be overcome with a $50 saw. Throughout 2019 under Trump border encounters were the highest in more than a decade, spiking to about triple the totals of when he took office. And in December 2020 – in Trump’s final full month as president – border encounters were at the highest level for a December in more than two decades and had been rising for months. Global migration is complicated and border numbers – under Trump and under Biden – remind us why we need a full immigration overhaul from Congress to address 21st century migration, but that Trump and Republicans keep blocking a legislative fix. When Republicans try to whitewash other parts of Trump’s immigration record: Trump’s first term on immigration was a cruel and chaotic failure (see here). He dismantled our immigration system – the asylum process, visa channels, the refugee program, among others –, which has contributed to the broken system we see today. His first-term policies included: Damaging policies that separated toddlers from their parents at the border; banning Muslim and African families from entering America, even with approved visas; funneling billions toward an ineffective border wall breached by a $20 handsaw; attacking legal and lawful immigration and slashing new arrivals to the U.S. precipitously; and ugly attacks on popular and successful policies like the DACA program for Dreamers. When Republicans claim immigrants are responsible for the fentanyl crisis: The opioid crisis is inflicting a devastating blow to our families and communities. We need real solutions to address this problem, not scapegoating immigrants and asylum seekers. The fentanyl crisis is a public health crisis and needs a public health solution. Illicit fentanyl is predominantly brought in by U.S. citizens for U.S. citizen consumption and is smuggled in alongside commercial traffic. Trump coddled China’s leader who did nothing to stop Chinese export of fentanyl ingredients to Mexico. At the same time, Congressional Republicans refused to pass legislation that dealt with increased enforcement against fentanyl smugglers. There is no correlation between the number of migrants seeking safety at the border and fentanyl seizures. Nor is immigration correlated with increased levels of crime. When Republicans discuss an immigration “invasion” or that immigrants are “replacing” white Americans conspiracy theory: Remember the direct link between violent anti-immigrant rhetoric and real life violence. Mainstreaming dangerous conspiracies that have been echoed in mass shootings by domestic terrorists in El Paso, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and elsewhere should be unacceptable. According to AV analysis of AdImpact data, Republican-aligned campaigns have spent more than $472M on ads with negative immigration mentions so far this year – more than twice as much as 2022 and 11 times as much as 2020 over the same period. At least $40.7M has been spent on 83 unique ads that peddle the white nationalist “invasion” rhetoric. When Republicans claim Biden or Democrats are putting “illegals” ahead of Americans: Recall how Donald Trump and the Trump organization hired and exploited undocumented workers as part of a multi-state criminal conspiracy that stretched back decades (see here and video here). The post Pre-Debate Cheat Sheet – When Trump and Republicans Say the Following on Immigration… appeared first on America's Voice. Extreme demands will not solve the migration crisis /content/extreme-demands-will-not-solve-the-migration-crisis/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=extreme-demands-will-not-solve-the-migration-crisis Tue, 02 Jan 2024 18:44:14 +0000 BY: VANESSA CÁRDENAS and MURAD AWAWDEH Winter is here and cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago are in a race against time to find the necessary funds to help thousands of immigrants and their families who will literally be left out in the cold this holiday season thanks to a group of extreme-right Republicans… Continue » The post Extreme demands will not solve the migration crisis appeared first on America's Voice. BY: VANESSA CÁRDENAS and MURAD AWAWDEH Winter is here and cities like New York, Boston, and Chicago are in a race against time to find the necessary funds to help thousands of immigrants and their families who will literally be left out in the cold this holiday season thanks to a group of extreme-right Republicans who are holding a legislative package hostage. This unnecessary and heartless gridlock stands to create not only chaos in New York, but also grief and despair. In addition to blocking funds for cities such as New York, the same Republicans are also blocking foreign aid , hoping to ram through draconian, anti-immigrant proposals that would dismantle a pathway to legal immigration, including the asylum system. Just last week, Senate Republicans blocked the legislative package because it did not include their immigration demands. The Biden administration and congressional Democrats cannot allow this to happen. Dismantling our asylum system will increase chaos in the immigration process and exacerbate underlying issues. Immigration is a complex issue that demands a multi-pronged, bipartisan approach that factors in our nation’s economic needs and the need for a humane, orderly process that is beneficial to both the country and immigrants, as well as other considerations. The money the Biden administration requested would fund personnel and build the infrastructure and organization required to make our asylum, and in turn, our immigration system work better. There is $1.4 billion specifically for FEMA that can be used to fund shelters and additional money for transportation and legal services that communities receiving migrants, as well as border communities, need now. NYC Mayor Adams’ scapegoating of asylum seekers for recent budget cuts, is not only insincere but incorrect. Disinformation has also made the situation worse by creating unnecessary divisions that only serve as a distraction from the larger issue at hand. The bottom line is that Mayor Adams’ management of the city has led us to this place, not new arrivals. We need immigrants to help alleviate the worker shortage in our communities and nationwide. Since the pandemic, many local businesses are in need of workers, and many of these migrants who are willing to work can’t because of their status. So why not help facilitate and expedite the process? Further, New York is home to approximately three million foreign-born residents and boasts a proud legacy of immigrants past and present who have contributed to the distinct cultural and economic fabric that makes New York one of the most iconic cities in the world. According to a report from the American Immigration Council, in the year 2021, immigrants had a spending power of approximately $138 billion and paid up to $61 billion in taxes. If we create safe and more accessible legal pathways for these newly arrived migrants, we can fulfill Lady Liberty’s promise of refuge and hope, while also injecting our local economy with ready-to-work labor– a classic win-win situation Republicans in Washington are determined to turn into a zero-sum game by delaying the funding bill. Congress needs to resolve this latest stalemate on immigration soon to ensure federal money can flow into the cities that need it right now like New York. However, this doesn’t mean Democrats should simply cave to Republican demands. Especially not when the proposed “solutions” are misguided, cruel and only exacerbate the chaos and disorder at the border and elsewhere. Building a wall and making it harder for immigrants to be granted asylum or receive parole does not resolve the real need for comprehensive immigration reform nor will it prevent more migrants from coming. This is simply the latest effort to use migrants as scapegoats for political expediency and to bolster flagging poll numbers. These are human lives—mothers, fathers, children—fleeing violence and persecution, looking for safety and opportunity. . We need real resolve from Congress to stop playing vicious games with our lives, but instead invest in our collective futures—our immigrant workers and economy— instead of harmful partisan gridlock. The post Extreme demands will not solve the migration crisis appeared first on America's Voice. District-Level Polling Shows California Republicans Need to Lead on Bipartisan Immigration Reform /content/district-level-polling-shows-california-republicans-need-to-lead-on-bipartisan-immigration-reform/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=district-level-polling-shows-california-republicans-need-to-lead-on-bipartisan-immigration-reform /content/district-level-polling-shows-california-republicans-need-to-lead-on-bipartisan-immigration-reform/#respond Thu, 10 Oct 2013 14:55:31 +0000 According to new polls from Magellan Strategies, the vast majority of likely voters in three Republican-held districts—CD-10, CD-21, and CD-22—support immigration reform that creates a path to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans. These findings confirm the results of hundreds of other surveys conducted over the past few years.
