Entertainment Entertainment News and Headlines from ABC Audio en-us 'You Had to Be There' director Nick Davis on getting Martin Short in his 'Godspell' documentary /entertainment/4a69a65cfe4f4d6578a93d20f232a7b9 Thu, 24 Sep 2026 05:00:00 -0500 /entertainment/4a69a65cfe4f4d6578a93d20f232a7b9 Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber and the rest of the cast of the 1972 Canadian production of the musical 'Godspell' appear in this still from the documentary 'You Had to Be There.' (Greenwich Entertainment)When Nick Davis arrived for his first meeting with Martin Short, he had no idea if the actor would be down to star in a documentary about the 1972 Canadian production of the musical Godspell. The production was Short's first real professional acting gig. It paired him with future comedic legends such as Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, Jayne Eastwood and Victor Garber.Davis didn't know if Short would be up for a project centered on the behind-the-scenes moments of the famous production. But he knew he had to try.The idea for the documentary was sparked by Davis reading Short's memoir."I had always heard about this production and I watched SCTV and as a kid and I remember then thinking, 'How did so many of these people come from Godspell?'" Davis told ABC Audio. He didn't know much about the show, only that he thought it was a "goofy, sappy, hippy dippy musical about Jesus."For Davis, it never made sense "that these comedians who were so scathing and hilarious had come from this thing that I felt was very mockable," he said. But as he kept reading Short's memoir, he discovered details he had never known about these comedians he so admired."I didn't even know that Marty had dated Gilda and then met his eventual wife in the cast," Davis said. It left him wondering, "Wait, what was this like for these people?"Davis was able to score a lunch meeting with Short to discuss the possibility of him participating in a documentary about the production, and he wasn't left wondering Short's thoughts on the matter for very long."I get to the restaurant. He sticks out his hand, he says, 'Hi, I'm Marty,' and before we even sit down he said, 'So, I talked to everybody, we all think it's a great idea. Let's do it,'" Davis said. "It was like a 7 million pound weight had been lifted off my shoulders because, like me, they thought it was a good idea." The documentary is known by the first five words of its title, but boasts the full name You Had To Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution, Spread Love & Overalls, and Created a Community That Changed the World (In a Canadian Kind of Way). It's now playing in select theaters before it opens wider on Friday.Davis said the film reminds him of a home movie. Almost every person who was part of the original Canadian production of Godspell sat down for interviews, where they spoke openly about how their time as part of the show changed their lives."They're really open and intimate. And part of that is just age. They've all reached the age where they're happy to talk freely about their personal lives," Davis said.In a particularly intimate part of the documentary, Short tells the camera of his cast mates: "We fell in love with each other."Davis honed in on this moment. "It's not just that they were bed hopping a little bit, as was common in the early '70s," he said, but that they became each other's family."Marty became Andrea's brother-in-law. Martin and Eugene were best friends coming into it. And they've stayed best friends. Victor and Andrea are best friends," Davis said. "It's one of those groups of people that is just really, really tight. And we were so lucky to be invited to be in and tell their story."While there was a lot that surprised Davis while making his documentary, nothing surprised him more than how "amazingly great" he now thinks Godspell is."I went into this thinking it could have been Sweet Charity, it could have been Jesus Christ Superstar, it could have been How to Succeed in Business. It could not have been. It had to be Godspell," Davis said. The director called working on this film "one of the great gifts" of his life, as it "was animated with such a pure, wonderful spirit."But don't mistake that for it being one-note."There's heartbreak, obviously, in Godspell. The main character as we know meets an untimely end. But also the cast. Gilda Radner died young and tragically, and another of the members of the cast, you sort of think, 'Well, why didn't they all go on to such wonderful careers?' Well, you hear about that in the film, too. But it's grounded in humanity, as well as real joy, and it was just a wonderful thing to work on. And I miss it every day."Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. (ABC News)Tom Cruise is trading action for dark comedy in his new film Digger. The film, out on Oct. 2, follows Cruise as Digger Rockwell, described in a synopsis for the movie as "the most powerful man in the world" who "embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything.""This is a story about power, greed — about responsible and being irresponsible," Cruise told ABC News' Chris Connelly in an interview about his character. "He's trying to control things that are just — you can't control it. It's not going to happen."When the film's official trailer was released in July, many saw Cruise's transformation as Digger for the first time. In the trailer, the actor is almost unrecognizable in prosthetics and costume. Also starring in the film are Sandra Hüller, John Goodman and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed.Ahmed recalled working with Cruise and described the feeling on set as "intimidating.""For the first few days, I didn't have to act," he told ABC News. "It was intimidating to be on set. With him as Digger Rockwell, there was this hurricane, this kind of operatic character coming at you 100 miles per hour."Hüller also weighed in on working with Cruise and said, "He wants to know what other people think. We could collaborate on that very much, so we were creating things together. The mood on set was so special and always positive and playful. It could have gone on forever. That's my memory of it. We really had a lot of fun. I really had a lot of fun."Cruise told ABC News that he first heard about Digger eight years ago after meeting with director Alejandro G. Iñarritu, who previously directed The Revenant and Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Cruise said it was also the same day as the first shooting day for Top Gun: Maverick.Leading up to filming for Digger, Cruise was wrapping up filming on Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.Ahmed reflected on the actor's work ethic and nonstop energy."He was doing that kind of thing," Ahmed said. "When we were in rehearsal, we were all exhausted. And Tom's like, 'All right, I'm getting in the water tank now.' The what? He's going into a sub-zero temperature water tank to do a true-life stunt for a mission. He's gonna fly himself there on a helicopter! There's just a relentless kind of dynamo energy here that's inspiring to be around."Cruise said, "It's so fun, because I'm learning constantly."The actor, who has starred in eight Mission: Impossible films, Edge of Tomorrow, War of the Worlds, Jack Reacher and more, has become synonymous with high-octane, high-energy action films. And before playing Maverick in the 1986 film Top Gun, Cruise starred in the romantic drama Endless Love, the coming-of-age teen comedy Risky Business and more, cementing himself as a leading man in Hollywood. But prior to making a name for himself in Hollywood, Cruise worked a number of odd jobs, including being a superintendent's assistant in New York City, working on daily maintenance of a building."I would have to go down and fix their stuff and I was a handyman before, I had many jobs growing up," he said. "I had to go down and fix their heat, I shoveled the ice every day, I made sure that the garbage was taken out, yeah I took care of it. Whatever you need."Reflecting on his film career, Cruise called it a "real gift.""I dreamed of a life to be able to do this for the rest of my life as a kid," he said. "And every day, I'm thinking, 'You know what? I can't control what's going to happen. But what I can control is I can just do the best I can.'"Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. (Morgan Hancock/Getty Images)Rapper Macklemore announced Thursday he is launching a "Free Palestine" tour after being dropped from Ed Sheeran's tour after making pro-Palestinian comments onstage."This is a moment of momentum, and there is work to be done. So we’re going on tour," Macklemore wrote in a message on social media. The rapper, whose birth name is Ben Haggerty, said more tour details, including artists and dates, will be announced soon."So, as you all know, my schedule freed up a bit," he wrote, in part. "I’ve spent the last week reaching out to artists who have shown up and used their stages to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, regardless of the consequences. Artists who understand that our platforms mean very little if we’re only willing to use them when it’s safe."Macklemore previously announced on Sept. 14 he had been dropped from Sheeran's United States tour after making pro-Palestinian comments on stage at MetLife stadium earlier this month. In a video from the Sept. 4 show at MetLife posted to his Instagram account, Macklemore says in part, "One of the reasons why I wanted to come on this tour, was because I wanted to stand up here on stages and stadiums across America, and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart. Free Palestine."Macklemore then alleged that Sheeran told him Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium and the New England Patriots, rallied other venue owners and gave Sheeran an ultimatum, threatening to block the shows if Macklemore remained on the tour.Following Macklemore's exit from Sheeran's tour, other supporting Aaron Rowe, Finneas, Beoga and Lukas Graham said they would be withdrawing from the tour in the wake of the controversy. On Sept. 19, at his first concert following the controversy, Sheeran opened his show by apologizing to fans for "making mistakes.Sheeran told fans at Lincoln Financial Field that he has had to make difficult decisions in the past week adding, "and I am making mistakes and I'm so, so sorry."Earlier in the week, Sheeran said on social media that the decision to drop Macklemore from the tour was his promoter's decision. In a statement to ABC News last week, Messina Touring Group, the tour's U.S. promoter, said, "As the concert promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup, which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans. After discussions with stakeholders, Macklemore will not be performing on the remaining support dates."Neither Sheeran nor Kraft have commented publicly on Macklemore's "Free Palestine" tour announcement.Kraft previously replied to Macklemore's comments in a statement shared with ABC News on Sept. 14."Based on Macklemore’s recent actions, material shared from the stage during Ed Sheeran’s shows in New Jersey, and a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery that we believe has been deeply offensive and hurtful to the Jewish community, we determined that his participation in the September 25th and 26th concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross that line," Kraft stated in part.Kraft didn't specify the allegations of antisemitism."This decision is not about diminishing the suffering of innocent Palestinians or denying anyone the right to advocate on their behalf. Their pain and loss are real," Kraft continued. "I would welcome the opportunity to sit down with Macklemore and discuss the facts, because ultimately our goal is the same – peace for all people, an end to suffering, and an end to all hate."In his statement also released on Sept. 14, Macklemore said that "antisemitism is real," adding, "That is exactly why the word matters too much to be used as a shield against criticism of the Israeli state.""When criticizing Israel, opposing Zionism or saying 'Free Palestine' gets conflated with hatred of Jewish people, it doesn't protect Jewish people," he continued. "It protects Israel from accountability."Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. All rights reserved.]]> Macklemore performs at Rod Laver Arena on May 15, 2024, in Melbourne, Australia. (Greenwich Entertainment)When Nick Davis arrived for his first meeting with Martin Short, he had no idea if the actor would be down to star in a documentary about the 1972 Canadian production of the musical Godspell. I don't feel like I understand that," replies Holmes, who filmed the documentary in 2023 before she reported to prison.Holmes was found guilty in January 2022 on four counts of fraud against investors who had poured millions of dollars into Theranos, a Silicon Valley blood-testing startup. She was sentenced to over 11 years in prison.Fielder, who rose to prominence for his show Nathan For You, is seen in the trailer moving in with Holmes and her partner, Billy Evans, and their children."I don't think so," Holmes tells Fielder when he asks if she is worried about a filmmaker living with them 24/7, adding, "I think this is the moment in time to capture this story before I'm gone."Fielder is also seen in the trailer speaking with Evans, who has a quick reply when asked if he's ever been suspicious that Holmes has lied to him."No, never," Evans says.In one of the trailer's final scenes, Holmes tells Fielder, "I don't have anything to hide."You Can See Everything, directed by Lance Oppenheim in addition to Fielder, is scheduled to be released in theaters on Oct. 16.A synopsis for the film says it was filmed 34 days before she reported to prison, adding, "What begins as an intimate portrait of an enigmatic felon becomes a mind-bending three-year journey into the abyss."Holmes’ X account shared a link to a clip from the documentary on Sept. 6, when the film was first announced.“I’m always being real,” Holmes captioned the clip.Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. (John Nacion/FilmMagic via Getty Images)Kit Harington jumped at the chance to join the Wizarding World. The actor revealed his personal connection to the Harry Potter books in an interview released Monday on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. It was the Harry Potter audiobooks that helped Harington get through his sobriety struggles, the actor said."I listen to the Stephen Fry audiobooks. And I do that because my brain is incredibly busy, especially at night, and I’ve always found going to bed very difficult like and my brain doesn’t turn off," Harington said. "When I got sober that got especially bad. So I started listening to Harry Potter audio books, and now they’re the thing I listen to every night."The Game of Thrones actor said because of this, the Harry Potter books "have a very special place in my heart."This is especially true after Harington voiced the character Gilderoy Lockhart in Audible's Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, which was released in late 2025. He now is set to reprise the role as the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts in season 2 of the upcoming HBO Harry Potter series."When I knew they were doing this show, I was like, ‘I think that’s a brilliant idea, I think they can really delve into it further than the films did.’ I’m fully supportive of it,” Harington said. “And then I got called to be in it, and that was just a very simple, ‘Yes, please!'"Harington replaced Nicholas Hoult in the role. Hoult was previously announced to star as the character back in August before he left the part over scheduling issues. HBO had to work around two of Hoult's preexisting projects, and when it was no longer feasible, the actor was let out of his deal, ABC Audio confirmed at the time.Gilderoy Lockhart was previously played by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. (Photo by Jeff Spicer/Getty Images for Spotify)Ed Sheeran opened his concert in Philadelphia on Saturday apologizing to fans for "making mistakes" after his tour was thrust into controversy earlier this week and saying the situation in Gaza is "catastrophic and unjustifiable."The English superstar's comments come after opening act Macklemore was dropped from the tour over pro-Palestinian comments he made from the stage at an earlier show in New Jersey. In the wake of that decision, the rest of the opening acts for Sheeran's tour announced they would also be withdrawing from the tour.In his remarks to the audience at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran said he has had to make difficult decisions in the past week adding, "and I am making mistakes and I'm so, so sorry."Sheeran said he has traditionally stayed out of politics."I've never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet," he said.Addressing the Israel-Hamas war, Sheeran began by referencing the massacre at the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7, 2023."What happened in Israel at the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain," Sheeran said. "What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate. My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and the loss of civilians' lives, of children's lives."The controversy began unfolding earlier this week when Macklemore announced on Monday he had been dropped from Sheeran's tour after making pro-Palestinian comments on stage at MetLife Stadium earlier this month, which the rapper also posted to social media. In a video from the New Jersey show posted to his Instagram account, Macklemore says, "One of the reasons why I wanted to come on this tour, was because I wanted to stand up here on stages and stadiums across America, and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart. "Macklemore's contract for the tour was with the promoter, not me."Sheeran also said he was "appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine" and said after his New Jersey shows that upcoming venues "communicated that they would pull the shows" if Macklemore remained as the supporting act.In a statement to ABC News earlier this week, Messina Touring Group, the tour's U.S. promoter, said, "As the concert promoter for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. Loop Tour, we have been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that they will not allow a concert to take place with Macklemore on the lineup, which would result in the cancellation of the tour and impact hundreds of thousands of fans. Free Palestine. I said Free Palestine."Macklemore also said, "To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters, criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide, in no way is a criticism of you," in the lead-up to his song "Hind's Hall." (Stefano C. Montesi)When Angelina Jolie first read author Alessandro Baricco's book Senza Sangue, it took her on a journey.Jolie assumed she knew what was going to happen at the novel's end. But as she kept reading, the actress, director and writer realized she had made the wrong assumptions about where the story was heading."Knowing all I knew about conflict or anger or what we do or revenge, I thought I knew where it was going. I thought I was quite sure where it was going," Jolie told ABC Audio. "More than that, I thought I knew where I wanted it to go."Not only is Jolie familiar with survivors of real-life conflict through her humanitarian work, she's also directed three films about war and conflict: In the Land of Blood and Honey, Unbroken and First They Killed My Father. She knows the expected story beats in projects like this. Most of the time it's either "you get the revenge or you don't" or "you get the resolution or you just don't," she said. But Baricco's novel does it all differently. Instead, it takes the two leads and has them sit across a table from each other and talk. They learn from each other's experiences and decide they don't actually want whatever revenge or resolution they thought they may have wanted prior."It matured me. It educated me to read the book," Jolie said. "I think it's an important thing to put out there today because there's so much about being absolute on this side or that side or right or wrong or for or against."Jolie hopes audiences learn through this story that it's OK to say "'I don't know' and 'I'm trying to listen' and 'I am trying to understand' and 'I'm still trying to figure out myself.'""For any person that's had any level of trauma or conflict, I think it's important to want to go more deeply and not just sit with being right," Jolie said. "It's an important discussion."Jolie adapted Baricco's book into the screenplay for Without Blood, the new film that is currently playing in select theaters. When it came time to choose who would take on the starring role, Jolie looked to her Eternals co-star Salma Hayek.Hayek said she and Jolie have "amazing creative teamwork" and that Jolie balances her out really well."I put this experience completely separate than any other experience I've ever had. It's just not even, I cannot even compare," Hayek said. "I've had other experiences that have been life-changing experiences in a different way, but this one has to do with the film because I had my judgment about what was happening and the book itself and the character itself. And throughout the process of making the film and being directed by her, I was so open."It wasn't simply that Jolie was "an amazing director," but Hayek said the film was a "very special experience" because of the knowledge Jolie has about the subject matter.Jolie "understands war like very few people, because she has been in those places of conflict. And she understands the big scope. And the intimacy of just being a human in conflict," Hayek said. "On top of it, she's also an actress, so she understands us like no one. It was just ... such a very special set of circumstances coming together that it's very hard for them to happen again." Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. (Jason Kempin/Getty Images)Charles Kelley, the co-lead vocalist and founding member of the country music trio Lady A, has been diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer. In a video he shared on Instagram Tuesday alongside his wife, Cassie McConnell Kelley, the singer said he has multiple myeloma."Hey everybody, just wanted to give a quick update on some health issues I'm dealing with," he said. "I had this — a couple random rib fractures that happened, which sparked my doctor into having me do several different blood tests."Kelley continued, "And one of the blood tests we did, they found a blood cancer in there called multiple myeloma and it's rare."The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer where too many plasma cells crowd "out normal cells in the bone marrow that make red blood cells, platelets and other white blood cells."The CDC adds that it's the most common type of plasma cell tumor and develops in the bone marrow and can spread throughout the body. According to the agency, scientists are still unclear about why some people get myeloma and others don't, but age is the most significant risk factor.Men are also more likely than women to develop myeloma, according to the CDC.Despite the diagnosis, the "Need You Now" singer said he is hopeful."I'm young, I feel healthy, and the treatments, I will have to say, have just come so far, even in the past five years that, even a life expectancy is just far exceeds what it used to be," he said, adding that he has leaned on a friend of his who is also diagnosed with multiple myeloma. He talked about upcoming shows lined up with Lady A, including several Christmas shows. He also mentioned that he has the first six months of treatment but didn't specify when that will be. However, Kelley said that he doesn't believe that it will be "too super invasive.""I can still work," he said. "I think physically I will feel like myself. I'll have tough days, but you know, I wanna keep working. Even going out last weekend after even knowing the news, it was like this is where I belong."Kelley continued, "I need to be happy and doing what I love to do and spending and soaking up as much time with my family as I can as well. But I'm hopeful, I really am and we just want to let you all know and I'll try to let you in when I feel like it's appropriate throughout the journey and it's just another hurdle and you know I'm pretty confident that we're going to get through it."Previously, Kelley has been open about his sobriety journey. After starting recovery in August 2022, he has spoken in depth about the process with his fans."It helped me so much," he said. "I think in the same spirit of the way we've kind of shared a lot of my sobriety journey just getting this stuff off your chest is so freeing and it takes the power away from it a little but that we wanted to let you know what was going on."He added, "We're going to get through it. I think in sobriety, it's all about one day at a time and that we're not in control and so that's the way we're looking at it.In the comments section of Kelley's post, his fellow band members shared their support.Hillary Scott wrote, "The strongest duo right here! (Jason Kempin/Getty Images)The estate of Dolly Parton has been granted a temporary restraining order against her nephew, Bryan Seaver, who previously served as the singer's longtime head of security, and his security company.A Tennessee judge found Wednesday that for purposes of a temporary restraining order, alleged conduct by Seaver and his company shows a "present and continuing disruption and threat" to She's Alive, the company overseeing the business empire left by Parton, who died on Aug. 25 after a brief battle with cancer. She's Alive accused Seaver of “an obscene, deliberate and escalating campaign of threats” against Parton's estate, according to a request for a temporary restraining order filed Tuesday in Davidson County Chancery Court in Nashville. The document also alleges Seaver threatened attorneys, business partners and employees and at one point allegedly warned he could "destroy the entire brand" unless he was paid.Seaver is also alleged to have told a member of Parton's legal team, "I'm not an entertainment person. I'm a killer," according to the court document. The order issued Wednesday requires, among other things, that Seaver and his security company stay at least 1,000 feet away from any person or entity that may have a business relationship with She's Alive.A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7.Seaver, the son of one of Parton's 11 siblings, was the family member who officially announced Parton's death in a video message shared on her social media. In a statement to ABC News on Wednesday, Seaver denied the allegations in the court filing, saying that his late aunt jokingly called him "her killer.""Dolly called me her killer. It was a joke we used around her camp," Seaver said. "I was her 'baby boy ninja' and Danny Nozell took that text out of context to somehow imagine that I was threatening him. He’s always called me The Killer."He added, "I've never threatened anyone. ... They are my friends and my brothers and colleagues."Nozell, Parton's longtime manager who oversees She's Alive, had no comment Thursday when reached by ABC News.Seaver did not immediately reply to a request for comment Thursday on the order being granted. He previously said that he was fired as Parton's head of security last week over what he calls "contrived threats.""I was fired. After the estate negotiated with me and my company for services in perpetuity and agreed to that service provision from my company," Seaver told ABC News Wednesday. "A week later they fired me for these contrived 'threats.'"Parton, who became known for her entrepreneurial skills in addition to her music prowess, left behind a multimillion dollar estate, including the Dollywood amusement park.
