I went to the Sunday Market at Wembley stadium and took a wrong turn coming out. Needless to say I walked all the way around the stadium and was farther from the hotel than I needed to be. But the weather was good and a nice walk never hurts. In the afternoon I took a bus to Brent Cross to buy a few supplies shampoo etc...

Watched American football with a British Commenator, it was an interesting game, the terminology was different than we use and it was not the Vikings! it was the Jets and the Oilers!

Today off to the Air France office to work. After I finally finished school it only took 30 + years, and came through the largest airline merger in the world, I might finally have time for this again.

I am travelling to London for my job at Delta Airlines. I am still just too busy with school. I walked at graduation but still have a few classes left. The actual finish date for classes is in July. But they let you go through ceremonies if you are close to graduation and I was really close.

I will post more after graduation, maybe if the time permits2009/05/still-knitting-and-almost-finished-with.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-3987065322746967343Sun, 30 Mar 2008 14:52:00 +00002008-03-30T08:40:59.855-07:00Switzerland and School<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5183547814700764418" border="0" />So this is the big hill behind where we stayed in Switzerland and you know what is on the other side France. I don't ski but Bob and my brother in law Richard who do ski have been planning this once in a life time trip to ski.

So on Feb 1 we headed off to Switzerland to <a href=" du Soleil, or the doors to the sun for skiing. I had plenty of homework to do for school so I was busy. Did I forget to mention one of the joys of online classes they are portable and go anywhere with you. I also got a lot of knitting time in too but no pictures of what I worked on yet. We flew into Geneva and drove to Portes Du Soleil, on the way we dropped off my sister and spouse in Champoussin and continued on to Les Crosets. Les Crosets is literally at the end of the road you can go no further and the road is narrow and twisty and curvy and you are literally hanging on the side of the mountain. We spent a week there and unfortunately, Champoussin although only 4 miles away as the crow flies is hard to get to if you don't ski, so I did not see much of my sister that week, and then to top it off the bus that runs between the resorts had a reduced schedule due to school break.

However the two skiers saw each other everyday as it was really easy to ski between the two resorts.

Did we find yarn in Switzerland now that is a silly question of course we did, on the way out of the mountains we stopped in Geneva at two yarn stores both in the Carrouge Area of Geneva. One was called <a href="; and they had some Swiss handspun, I resisted temptation and did not purchase any. The next shop was not far away and I believe it was called Le Rouet or something like that. There I purchased some yarn that is similar to Koigu for socks.

Did I forget to mention where I went everyday to do homework? I went to the bar Le Grange, it was the only place in Les Crosets where they had wireless that worked with my computer. I learned there are many levels of Coca Cola. One day I ordered a Coke and was asked which level, Coke original, coke light, coke zero, coke cerise ou coke limon. Yes they only spoke French, so at times it was interesting but I could at least for the most part order meals and find the rest room. I loved Switzerland and hope to go back some day.

Since we have been back I have finished two classes College Writing and Group Dynamics. College Writing was okay, I did get a good grade an "A" but I think the content could be directed more toward APA style which is what Concordia requires for every paper. Group Dynamics just finished last week and I am not sure how I did, I had one really bad week and it may have cost me the grade I wanted.

I also went on the semi annual convent knitting retreat and sorry to disappoint you no Chippendales showed up again this year. One of the spouse is sure we go to have a wild weekend of Chippendale dancers and who knows what else...In ac
tuality we sit around in jammies and knit all week end. Since then it has been pretty quiet just work and school and work and school.....

Let me leave you with one more shot of Portes du Soleil, the church in Les Crosets. It is about the size of my 8 X 8 kitchen.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5183556413225291042" border="0" />2008/03/switzerland-and-school.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-8835164527789436817Thu, 31 Jan 2008 03:49:00 +00002008-01-30T20:08:20.539-08:00Knitting and SchoolSo in my last post I told you I was going back to school, well this is week 3 and I am still hanging in there. I am taking College Writing Online, and it is a challenge. The class meets once a week in a chat room and talks and then I have assignments to complete as well. The class is accelerated which means 12 weeks squished into 6. I forgot how hard school is, the good part I go to school at Panera and then get to knit afterwards with my Weds Nite Knit Friends.

Today I got my syllabus for my co hort, it made it seem so much more real. It lays out all the classes and says I should be finished by July 2009. I will keep you posted.

Okay for knitting news, it is Preemie Hat Month I knit 11 and did not take any pictures. But I do have two finished objects. First a Christmas Present for my brother in law's wife, in primary colors. She teaches Kindergarten so appropriate colors for her. The pattern was from the Sock Journal and is called Cobblestone Socks.
The picture on the left is a close up of the stitch pattern

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161485633345225778" border="0" /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 288px; height: 198px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161486144446334018" border="0" />

I also finished a pair of socks for me out of the new Berocco Sox and I don't remember the colorway I think it is Liverpool.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5161487067864302674" border="0" />

I will keep you all posted about school and what little knitting I might get done.2008/01/knitting-and-school.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-7264230141627432982Thu, 17 Jan 2008 04:28:00 +00002008-01-16T20:35:12.700-08:00School DaysJust a quick update....I decided last fall to return to school and applied to and was accepted in Concordia University's Degree Completion Program in Organizational Management and Leadership. But I still needed to finish up some general ed requirements either because I missed them the first time around or because the credits I had did not meet Concordia's requirements.

So tonight was my first class "College Writing", I think the class went okay. All my classes will be online and the class meets in a chat room and discusses the weeks reading assignment. The amount of homework I imagine is no less than going to regular class but with my schedule that just did not work for me.

I will keep you posted...I think I am the oldest student in the class and kind of worried about it.

Knitting content coming soon I promise as soon as Megan gets my camera back to me.2008/01/school-days.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-2071905731722186174Sat, 22 Dec 2007 04:35:00 +00002007-12-21T20:46:32.147-08:00<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5146651962105010130" border="0" /> Now where did Boo and Baby go just when it is picture time they disappear....I guess it is okay because after all I am the cutest one of the three...Ducky

Happy Holidays!

The knitting pictures will be posted after the gifts are opened!

2007/12/now-where-did-boo-and-baby-go-just-when.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-6024205571189682212Fri, 07 Dec 2007 23:59:00 +00002007-12-07T16:05:04.991-08:00C'est Fini<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5141385138632391106" border="0" />
I finished the endless baby blanket. Megan's friend Caitlin had a purebred Siamese who got out one day and then came Baby and Ducky. They are half siamese and half barn cat. They act more Siamese, they talk to you. I have never had a cat who talks, if you are in the bathroom longer than they think you should be they sit outside the door and let you know it. But we love them anyway, just in case you are wondering Ducky is the darker one and has a really sweet dispostion, Baby is the lighter and somewhat of a prima donna. Baby does not really like Boo so this picture may be the only one I ever get of all three together.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLS!

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5127874193762866626" />

"They are turning out okay Mom especially since they moved in with us" according to Boo

A little knitting content....

I finished some felted clogs and a pair of half mitts. The clogs were from Stash Yarn and the mitts I started last year and finally put the thumbs on them, as soon as I can get the mitts back from Megan I will post a picture.2007/11/happy-birthday.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-6909490600406230135Fri, 26 Oct 2007 03:49:00 +00002007-10-25T21:08:32.362-07:00Cats and KnittingTonite I went to see Crazy Aunt Purl at the MOA Barnes and Noble. I ran into some old friends I had not seen in awhile Cathy and Marcia and Nora I used to knit with them at Clickity Sticks in Minneapolis and sometimes on Saturday Mornings at Como Park in St Paul, but we are all busy and don't see each other much. So back to Crazy Aunt Purl she wrote "Drunk, Divorced and Covered in Cat Hair" I hadn't read her blog much but the title of the book caught my eye because I am always covered in Cat Hair. She was funny and had a delightful southern accent, it was a good time.

Speaking of knitting and cats

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125488292185298322" />

Ducky has a new job CHIEF KNITTING INSPECTOR she likes to sniff and check out my knitted items while I am trying to take pictures. I arrived on Sunday in the middle of the nite and was met by a car at the airport. Went to the apartment with the most beautiful pool and slept for about 3 hours. Then I got up and started my adventures by meeting with a group of Singapore knitters. Pictures will come when I get home. One of the knitters was from Roseville Mn and teaches at the International School here.....
29April:
all of that happened a week ago and all I have been doing in between until this past weekend is working....Saturday my husband came and we spent the day familarizing ourselves with the local MRT system as all I know how to do is get to work, then we went to dinner at an Indonesian Restaurant and Sunday I met again with the Singapore knitting group. They gave me some really beautiful self striping yarn as a gift. Then back to work on Monday while Bob is out having fun....see you all soon2007/04/singapore.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-1375570498377306964Tue, 10 Apr 2007 02:50:00 +00002007-04-09T19:57:11.942-07:00So now it is AprilI thought I should post before April goes away.

I have been really busy getting a training manual written, finishing up my training and organizing my life before I go to Singapore.

Yes, I did attend the Yarn Harlot gathering at William Mitchell. Funny thing she remembered me from California. Who would of thought she would remember anyone, after all the knitters she meets. Her talk was just as good here as it was there and while I waited in line to get my book signed I won a door prize. It was...a toe up sock pattern, now how perfect is that? Thank You Yarnery for sponsoring such a fun evening.

I also hosted a rescheduled retreat at the end of March and it was cold and rainy so perfect weather to be inside with your good friends.

Currently I am knitting C3 from Knitty and some socks out of Lucy Neatby's Celestial Merino yarn. I can't wait to see the yarn available in Singapore.2007/04/so-now-it-is-april.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (louise)6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21663017.post-6056982275118097008Thu, 22 Mar 2007 02:56:00 +00002007-03-21T20:18:20.493-07:00IS it March alreadyI have been so busy since the last post that until someone pointed out to me that it had been over 6 weeks I did not realize. So lets get up to speed...On January 29 I started a training for a newly created department at Northwest. It involves about 12 weeks of training, I am just finishing up week 8. I am learning how to price and ticket reservations,in addition to my old job functions and also WorldPerks functions. Besides that I am helping to edit and write training manuals for my previous position and they will be used to train the new agents in our Singapore office. The big news I am in the end of April traveling to Singapore to train the new agents for 2 weeks. I can hardly wait to see a part of the world I have not seen.

So on to knitting I finished my son's Garter Stitch Beanie from Never Knit your Man a Sweater

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5044578973634668834" border="0" />

I made a flying trip out to see my sister and attend Stitches West the last weekend in February, and I do mean flying out on Friday night to San Jose and home on the red eye on Sunday morning. We took an all day sock class from Lucy Neatby and shopped the market. While at the market I met <a href=" /> she was my spoiler for Sockret Pal. Although, I confess I knew who she was before because Full Thread Ahead is one of the stores my sister and I go to when I am in California. Visit the link to see the picture of us together and the wonderful socks she made me.

So what did I buy at stitches? No Socks that Rock, the booth was completely out of sock yarn by time we got there, I did pick up some of Cookie's Patterns and some
<a href=" Souza yarn, some <a href=" Half Pint Yarn, a skein of Opal

One data point has gotten frequent mention, a majority of the republicans in these states don't believe in evolution.

I have a problem with this: Not the data that has been reported in the poll, but how it is being phrased. I do think that a majority of the Republicans in these states (like my home state of South Carolina) no not accept evolution, but this is not a matter of belief, think it is a matter of not understanding.

Evolution is science, you do not believe in science. You can understand the science, you can accept the science (because you understand how science works, but don't want to spend the time learning the details of this branch of science) or you can deny the science, belief plays no roll here.

The truth is the people in these areas are either too dumb or too lazy to do the hard work of understanding this theory so they take the easy route and deny science because they 'believe' in their religion ( where belief is essential... it is a major aspect of faith - accepting what cannot be proven as real). As was pointed out in the news reports about this polling:

Mississippi and Alabama are also deeply religious states that generally rank at or close to the bottom in most state education rankings.
Southern Republicans are, on the whol,e willfully dumb. The refuse to learn or to expose themselves to anything that upsets their world view. Time and again we find the greatest level of reactionary behavior, the greatest resistance to change, the locale where old times are not forgotten (but remembered in a very flawed and disny-esq manner) to be the deep south. This happens because of the population doesn't know better and simply refuses to do the work needed to learn the truth.

As a result we see that the majority of folks who will be voting today think the Obama is a follower of Islam (nope, he is a Christian, just like these folks are) that Evolution is wrong (or somehow in scientific dispute) and that the climate is not changing because of the actions on an industrial society. He engaged in hours of attacks on this woman, he called her a Slut and many other less than polite words, he demanded that she post sex videos on the internet and generally inferred that the only reason that anyone uses contraception is so they can have engage in sexual activity 24/7/365 with as many partners as possible.

The (rather unexpected) result of all of this is his advertising base has had it and are now walking (running ?) away. Rush, now in a panic, seeing his multi-million dollar gravy train pulling out without him has tried to fix the damage by releasing the following statement:

For over 20 years, I have illustrated the absurd with absurdity, three hours a day, five days a week. In this instance, I chose the wrong words in my analogy of the situation. I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke.

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress. I personally do not agree that American citizens should pay for these social activities. What happened to personal responsibility and accountability? Where do we draw the line? If this is accepted as the norm, what will follow? Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit? In my monologue, I posited that it is not our business whatsoever to know what is going on in anyone's bedroom nor do I think it is a topic that should reach a Presidential level.

My choice of words was not the best, and in the attempt to be humorous, I created a national stir. I sincerely apologize to Ms. Fluke for the insulting word choices."

This statement, like the vast majority of Rush's words, if full of lies, twists of facts, omissions and self-serving phraseology. He starts early :

I did not mean a personal attack on Ms. Fluke
But that is what you spent 3 days doing Rush, blasting her, calling her a slut, hinting about her sexual activity and demanding, for lack of a better term, sexual favors from her (The sex tape he wanted her to make). Maybe he was calling all users of contraception sluts, but that doesn't mean that the attacks were not directed directly at Ms. Fluke. The next lie was right after this:

I think it is absolutely absurd that during these very serious political times, we are discussing personal sexual recreational activities before members of Congress
The discussion in congress is not about 'personal sexual recreational activities' (please note just how Rush phrased this) it is about making sure that comprehensive insurance policies include contraception coverage. Rush is trying to make the fact that she was providing testimony seem sordid and tawdry by trying to slide the focus away from medical care and over to recreational sex.

And, so what, one of the reasons that contraception is important is so that persons who wants to engage in recreational sex can do so with the confidence that child will not be the result. Other reasons that should be listed as why this is a very important issue should include is so the couples who are monogamist but sexually active can have children when they are ready to, not before and then limit the number of children they have to what they feel is best for both the parents and the children (Few rational adults want to be the Duggers). Single women may want to be prepared if they chose to or are forced to (rape) engage in unplanned sexual activity. In addition there are numerous, heading onto countless, medical reasons why contraception is necessary and should be included in insurance coverage.

Now for the third and most egregious lie:

Will we be debating if taxpayers should pay for new sneakers for all students that are interested in running to keep fit?
This is, in very typical rush style, a lie by illusion. Why mention taxpayers paying for anything since this issue had nothing to do with taxpayer services? He does this to muddy the water create the impression that those supporting this issue are looking for some sort of government handout. Not true, but a typical Rush lie.

As of this morning about 9 national advertisers have announced that they are backing away (for a while at least) from their financial support of Rush. It would be interesting to see if local advertisers are also backing off. Only time will tell if this has been Rush's Glen Beck moment (I would bet it will not be), but this dishonest apology should provide ample evidence that Rush is not sorry, will not change and is a vile today as he was last week.

This statement is simply about Rush covering his oversized ass, keeping his job and the millions of dollars it provides him, nothing more, nothing less.

Tags <a href="; rel="tag">Contraception, Lies, Rush,
2012/03/rush-tries-to-cover-his-oversized-ass.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jon)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11651505.post-7329145856057525579Fri, 02 Mar 2012 16:49:00 +00002012-03-02T14:18:03.698-05:00Republicans sure hate women
As noted by <a href=" />
1. A secular world view is reguarlly denounce by most of the right wing, from the Pope to Rick Santorum to Pat Robinson, as the ultimate evil. But what is Secularism?

In political terms, secularism is a movement towards the separation of religion and government (often termed the <a href="; title="Separation of church and state">separation of church and state). This can refer to reducing ties between a government and a <a href="; title="State religion">state religion, replacing laws based on scripture (such as the <a href="; title="Torah">Torah and <a href="; title="Sharia">Sharia law) with civil laws, and eliminating discrimination on the basis of religion. This is said to add to democracy by protecting the rights of religious minorities
Overall the above sounds like a damn good idea. Based on my study of history it is what our founding fathers wanted and how this nation was created; so why does the right opposes this building block of the nation?

My view is conservatives see secularism as a threat to what they view is their right to hold power over others. The right likes the idea of forcing people to pray like they want them to, they like the idea of punishment for sexual activity they do not approve of. The right wants their faith to have priority over all others. In secularism they see their ability to impose their values on others being restricted and they don't like not having that power.

Is this too harsh of a review? Consider these three points.

The right likes the idea of forcing people to pray like they want them to. School prayer was an early battle ground in the culture war and one <a href=" is still quite active. The right wing has never forgiven the courts preventing them to make kids pray to their god. The right wing constantly distorts the law, and is constantly breaking the law by trying to sneak religion into school. When you look at the ruling the rights position becomes more absurd. The court said that schools cannot impose prayer on kids. It never said kids (or staff) can not pray, just that they cannot be made to participate in religious events. Here is the law as it now stands: If a student wants to pray, and it will not disrupt instruction, they are free to do so, but the school and its staff are not allowed to engage in any activity that promotes religion.

You see the student, not the school has the power to determine how and when and even if they want to worship, and the right doesn't like letting the kids have that power.

The right wing likes the idea of punishment for sexual activity they do not approve of. Both the abortion and contraception issue fit in here (as well as the rights refusial to address the AIS epidemic when it first arose). Bad girls have sex, and because they are bad they should be punished and through history that punishment has been to get pregnant. Contraception and abortion allow women to avoid this punishment, so these cannot be allowed. Just consider this <a href=" quote:

“ One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country. Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that’s OK; contraception is OK. It’s not OK. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.”
Rick has expressed, quite clearly, the reasoning behind the American conservatives anti contraception (and Abortion) movement. Modern society has advanced to the point where women can have better control over their bodies, and the right don't like it.... so it must be stopped.

The last point to look at is that the right wants their faith to have priority over all others. You see this almost daily now, their faith has to be given special rights (or the rights of other faiths must be repressed) to assure its dominance. In the <a href=" of allegiance on <a href=" <a href=" Plates there has been a constant push to get the state to endorce and promote one faith. If one looks they can seen these efforts almost daily, but this effort to get endorsement is not the only actions taken. There are also efforts to assure that other faiths have <a href=" thrown up in their path.

The culture war is actually a war on Secularism that the right wing has been fighting for decades, in the effort to overturn the will of our founding fathers and to find a way to maintain or gain power over individules and force them to accept a power structure that favors the collective over the individule and the statis quo over advancement.

Tags <a href="; rel="tag">faith, Republicans, sex

2012/02/war-on-secularism.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jon)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11651505.post-1956145038114062732Mon, 27 Feb 2012 19:12:00 +00002012-02-27T14:12:31.544-05:00Religious Freedom and the 1st Amendment
Something from our <a href=" President::

Gentlemen:

While I received with much satisfaction your address replete with expressions of esteem, I rejoice in the opportunity of assuring you that I shall always retain grateful remembrance of the cordial welcome I experienced on my visit to Newport from all classes of citizens.

The reflection on the days of difficulty and danger which are past is rendered the more sweet from a consciousness that they are succeeded by days of uncommon prosperity and security.

If we have wisdom to make the best use of the advantages with which we are now favored, we cannot fail, under the just administration of a good government, to become a great and happy people.

The citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy--a policy worthy of imitation. Looks Into Voter Fraud, Finds None
South Carolina joined the long list of Republican controlled states that passed voter suppression laws under the guise of an anti voter fraud law. The argument was voter fraud is fairly rampant and unless drastic action was taken our future elections are at risk.

There is no evidence of such fraud occurring and no record of any modern election in SC that has been impacted by fraud; But like good republicans, Gov.Nikki Haley and her minions passed this voter suppression law and then went about trying to prove it was needed. A list of over 900 'dead voters' was produced, the state went running to the DOJ (and Faux news) claiming that they had proof that their voter suppression law was necessary.
There was only one problem.... the dead voters were not dead, the issues that were involved included clerical errors at the polling place, absentee ballots and scanner failures, but no illegal voting. This dead, stinking, rotting from the head red herring is the only justification that Nikki and her crew can come up with to explain why their voter suppression law is needed, and it failed.

The truth is, the Republicans do not want the poor, the elderly and students to vote, these folks tend to not support the party of the rich. So they crafted a law that will make it more difficult for these people to vote and discourage their participation. And from a position of mathematics the efforts to suppress votes makes sense, while the effort to end voter’s fraud are foolish.

As this latest snipe hunt makes clear, voter fraud seldom happens, and its impact (if it did occur) is nonexistent. IF all 900+ suspected votes were fraud and IF each and every one of them was cast for a single candidate in a high profile state wide election, they would have had ZERO impact in 2008 or 2010. The total count of suspected votes was .00475% of votes in the 2008 election. In other words nothing. On the other hand voter suppression tactics like the current voter ID law are projected to have the potential to prevent 10s of thousands of votes from being cast..... That is a notable impact that could swing an election.

And that makes the actions of Nikki Haley and her Republican minions understandable.

Tags <a href="; rel="tag">Corruption, Nikki Haley, Republicans, South Carolina, Fraud
2012/02/sc-looks-into-voter-fraud-finds-none.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jon)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11651505.post-3433723182690877711Thu, 23 Feb 2012 15:11:00 +00002012-02-23T10:11:52.890-05:00Rugby This Weekend
Just a heads up, 6 Nations rugby is being played this weekend.

We have Italy at Ireland and Wales at England on Saturday, with a Sunday match of France at Scotland. I see it as authoritarian, reactionary, anti-science, anti-woman, theocratic, racist, militaristic, paranoid and cowardly. On occasion, I have looked at this perspective and have reviewed my view of this group of people and have yet to see any reason to change. The actions, statements and behavior of the tea party has done much to verify my view and the Primary season with Santorum's rise in prominence within the GOP has simply confirmed it.

These are all fairly negative and harsh evaluations of Santorum and all Republicans, but completely justifiable.

Starting at the top, authoritarian; A love of having control form above and having the ability to impose a collective will on the individual. Santorum's choice of faith (The Pope rules and everyone else follows) is indicative of a person who embraces a top down power structure and his view on the birth control issue is a second clear indicator that he thinks the decision on this issue should not lie with the individual, but someone enpowered above them. This point of view can also be seen in his view on the <a href=" over SOPA and PIPA he again favors striping the individual of the choice, and delivering the power to higher levels.

Santorum is the perfect example of a reactionary. He seems to want to teardown society and remold it into some fantasy Leave it to Beaver land. He is completely disappointed in our modern reality and truly desires to lead a forced march <a href=" to a simpler time.

Anti-Science is another undeniable aspect of both Santorum and the modern GOP. They hate the reality of <a href=";, the Big Bang and <a href=" Change. If a science discovery conflicts with their religious mythology or short term corporate goals, well then clearly science is wrong and must be attacked, the very same science that has made modern life possible.
The Anti-woman and theocratic points needs to be discussed at the same time since the one is a result of the other. The view that a woman’s role is secondary to the male is well established in most of the reactionary faiths (Including the ex Senator's). Santorum has made it clear that he <a href=" barefoot and preggers is the proper state for adult females. He bases this on his inerpation of the bible and thinks that this is the standard Government should enforce; His own little <a href=" of christian Sharia, based on what he thinks the bible says. The Theocratic view of how government should work is one he wants and will try to impose.

Racist is a very impolite charge, but based on last year’s Tea Party signage and some of <a href="; clearly <a href=" statements it is imposable to deny, racism is a central pillar of the right and the fact that it draws votes just confirms that the racism is found attractive to the followers of the individual and the party.

The last three points, militaristic, paranoid and cowardly, are both tied together and more of a personal impression. Republicans are defiantly pro military (well at least as far as hardware and the military industrial complex are concerned, for the vets, well there is a clear drop off in interest). They love the power and having over 50% of the world’s total military power under our control is a point of pride. Pride but not comfort and this is where both paranoid and cowardly come in. We need more guns, bombs, tanks, troops etc because they are all out to get us (maybe some are, but what the heck can any of them do about it) and without that extra bomber we may risk getting a boo-boo.

This fear based reflexive behavior of the right was a major factor in keeping Bush in power and it still moves votes within the GOP.

Santorum's rise from failed and evicted Senator to favored candidate of the GOP says a lot about the modern Republican Party and the people who are its members. And what it says is rather unpleasant. It is clear that Santorum is authoritarian, reactionary, anti-science, anti-woman, theocratic, and racist, the fact that he has become more than a fringe candidate confirms a lot of negative notions about those who consider themselves Republicans

And confirms my views of the Republican Party and its members.

Tags <a href="; rel="tag">Republicans, Santorum,theocratic
2012/02/santorums-success-confirms-my-view-of.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jon)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11651505.post-4342576574590813687Tue, 21 Feb 2012 13:29:00 +00002012-02-21T09:01:44.979-05:00Less Government Intervention?

The fine folks in the Republican Party (please include the the Tea Party and the rest of the conservative movement) are always screaming about wanting a smaller less intrusive government. But the actions of the GOP, what they support, what they oppose and what they constantly try to do, tell us a vastly different story. A story this cartoon illustrates perfectly:

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" lda="true" src="; />

For some reason, when the government wants (needs) to reduce pollution, or assure that when we harvest resources from our environment ( <a href=" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Oil , <a href=" style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Natural Gas , etc ) that we do as little harm as we can, the government is overstepping is bounds and authority, destroying opportunity and imposing on our freedom. For a few days much of the the ground in the US was white; Schools and airports were closed and in areas where snow is rare, life slowed to a stop for a day or two. For many people this was a nice break. I remember it an opportunity to break from the daily grind and a chance to play and spend time with with the kids, friends and neighbors.

What I also remember was the laughable reporting about how this storm was proof that climate change was nothing to worry with and that this storm was undeniable proof that climate change was a scientific hoax. While Faux was the worst of the offenders, this theme was found on CNN and the other major media players in the US. The question seemed to be, if you have climate change how can you have snow. Most of our media folks seemed unable to understand that weather and climate are not synonymous, but used this confusion to continue the efforts to deny the whole idea of climate change.

Now for a simple question: If last year’s snowpocalypse was proof that climate change was not occurring, then one would assume that Faux and their media friends would be pronouncing this year without a winter is proof that climate change is real. Funny thing, I have seen no media hinting at that. I do not know if this is a positive, indicating that our nation’s reporters and their employers have learned a little science in the last 12 months, or more likely this is just more evidence that silly right wing ideas can gain traction while equally silly left wing ideas (correctly) go nowhere. And since the media is clearly liberal (ask any right winger), these series of events have left me confused and marveling at how lies of the right take off, while simple truths never seem to be accepted.

And now more evidence why this suppression of facts and the spreading of BS happens so often.

We now have access to some <a href=" leaked documents clearly showing showing how corporate interests intend to spend millions to keep the population of this land uneducated and misinformed. This right wing think tank (term used very loosely here, I suspect there is not a lot of thinking going on at the Heartland Institute) has decided to copy the work of the US Tobacco industry, and pay scientist who are willing to sell their soul to create enough confusion to prevent any action being taken to address this issue. It worked for 30-40 years for smoking, if unchecked and allowed to fester there is no reason to believe that the Heartland group will not see similar results.

Tags <a href="; rel="tag">Corporate Corruption, Right Wing, Climate
2012/02/climate-weather-dishonesty-and.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jon)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11651505.post-5542371591718235559Thu, 16 Feb 2012 14:30:00 +00002012-02-16T09:30:00.045-05:00Be Careful What You Ask For
The Militia movement has always has a presence in South Carolina. It is to be expected, we have a pro gun culture, we hold a hyper authoritarian view on society, we do not like the federal government and we are, as a state and individually, on the whole under-educated. Fertile ground for conspiracy theories that fuel these movements

That is why we see <a href=" like this foolishness in our state.

We have a onetime county GOP leader, a town councilman and 'community leader' spinning tales of oppression, the creation of a police state and the overreach of law enforcement. In addition, this man hints of retaliation and taking the fight to the police.

What started this? He got pulled over for DUI. His feelings are hurt and he is now seeking a way to excuse his behavior by blaming others.

While I do agree with him on some points; I do think that we have created an environment where the police may have too much power and we may have removed too many of the protections that we once had against illegal searches etc. That said I would tell this man, and those who think like him, that it is not some grand global conspiracy, merely the end product of the changes that he and his ilk have demanded of society that has led to this. .

The GOP (The group this man has close ties with) has led the push for law and order. Demanded more power for the police and insisted that the courts erode protections that had been in places for decades. It is the GOP that pushed for the creation of the Department of Homeland security and the Patriot act and a countless other measures that have all resulted in the police having more power. This has led to more pressure being put on them to do something to address some type of behavior. The end result of all of this is inevitable, heightened enforcement, more traffic stops, and more arrests, leading to pissed off GOP county chairmen busted for DUI who are now seeking revenge.

Tags <a href="; rel="tag">GOP, Militia, Stupidity
2012/02/be-careful-what-you-ask-for.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jon)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11651505.post-4807366903003240659Wed, 15 Feb 2012 15:36:00 +00002012-02-15T10:52:21.968-05:00Why Now
Over at <a href=" and Liars they are featuring a video of Republican senator Jeff Sessions whining about the nation debt. The folks there make a very good point, why now. Durring the period from 2000-2008, when the debt of the nation doubled (and tax policy was enacted that is still adding to the debt), this ass did not complain, in fact he voted for the policies that doubled the debt.

His crying now seems more than a bit dishonest.

Tags <a href="; rel="tag">Republicans, Tax Policy, Debt
2012/02/why-now.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Jon)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11651505.post-998309474226277909Tue, 14 Feb 2012 14:15:00 +00002012-02-14T09:15:00.518-05:00It is about power, not religion
One of the more interesting objections to the current administrations plan to assure that all women have insurance coverage for contraception has been claim that this was a violation of the free expression of religion. I for one do not see it. There is no requirement that a person use this benefit. Anyone who, because of their religious teaching, doesn’t want to use birth control is free to continue to not use it. This policy does one thing, and one thing only, provides insurance coverage that the individual may chose to use. How is this violating anyone’s right of religious expression?

The right has tried to argue that it is religious institutions, Hospitals, Universities etc whose religious expression is being blocked. The Republicans argument seems to be that unless these organizations have the power to restrict their employees’ access to contraception the hospital or school will be a sinner in the eyes of god, and will be facing an eternity in hell. I for one was not aware that corporations or buildings had souls and could be facing eternal judgment.

The simpler truth is this is an argument over power. The administration’s plan ultimately shifts power to the individual, and removes it from the institution. This is the antithesis what the modern conservati
