Martin Short, Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber and the rest of the cast of the 1972 Canadian production of the musical 'Godspell' appear in this still from the documentary 'You Had to Be There.' (Greenwich Entertainment)When Nick Davis arrived for his first meeting with Martin Short, he had no idea if the actor would be down to star in a documentary about the 1972 Canadian production of the musical Godspell. The production was Short's first real professional acting gig. It paired him with future comedic legends such as Eugene Levy, Gilda Radner, Andrea Martin, Dave Thomas, Jayne Eastwood and Victor Garber.Davis didn't know if Short would be up for a project centered on the behind-the-scenes moments of the famous production. But he knew he had to try.The idea for the documentary was sparked by Davis reading Short's memoir."I had always heard about this production and I watched SCTV and as a kid and I remember then thinking, 'How did so many of these people come from Godspell?'" Davis told ABC Audio. He didn't know much about the show, only that he thought it was a "goofy, sappy, hippy dippy musical about Jesus."For Davis, it never made sense "that these comedians who were so scathing and hilarious had come from this thing that I felt was very mockable," he said. But as he kept reading Short's memoir, he discovered details he had never known about these comedians he so admired."I didn't even know that Marty had dated Gilda and then met his eventual wife in the cast," Davis said. It left him wondering, "Wait, what was this like for these people?"Davis was able to score a lunch meeting with Short to discuss the possibility of him participating in a documentary about the production, and he wasn't left wondering Short's thoughts on the matter for very long."I get to the restaurant. He sticks out his hand, he says, 'Hi, I'm Marty,' and before we even sit down he said, 'So, I talked to everybody, we all think it's a great idea. Let's do it,'" Davis said. "It was like a 7 million pound weight had been lifted off my shoulders because, like me, they thought it was a good idea." The documentary is known by the first five words of its title, but boasts the full name You Had To Be There: How the Toronto Godspell Ignited the Comedy Revolution, Spread Love & Overalls, and Created a Community That Changed the World (In a Canadian Kind of Way). It's now playing in select theaters before it opens wider on Friday.Davis said the film reminds him of a home movie. Almost every person who was part of the original Canadian production of Godspell sat down for interviews, where they spoke openly about how their time as part of the show changed their lives."They're really open and intimate. And part of that is just age. They've all reached the age where they're happy to talk freely about their personal lives," Davis said.In a particularly intimate part of the documentary, Short tells the camera of his cast mates: "We fell in love with each other."Davis honed in on this moment. "It's not just that they were bed hopping a little bit, as was common in the early '70s," he said, but that they became each other's family."Marty became Andrea's brother-in-law. Martin and Eugene were best friends coming into it. And they've stayed best friends. Victor and Andrea are best friends," Davis said. "It's one of those groups of people that is just really, really tight. And we were so lucky to be invited to be in and tell their story."While there was a lot that surprised Davis while making his documentary, nothing surprised him more than how "amazingly great" he now thinks Godspell is."I went into this thinking it could have been Sweet Charity, it could have been Jesus Christ Superstar, it could have been How to Succeed in Business. It could not have been. It had to be Godspell," Davis said. The director called working on this film "one of the great gifts" of his life, as it "was animated with such a pure, wonderful spirit."But don't mistake that for it being one-note."There's heartbreak, obviously, in Godspell. The main character as we know meets an untimely end. But also the cast. Gilda Radner died young and tragically, and another of the members of the cast, you sort of think, 'Well, why didn't they all go on to such wonderful careers?' Well, you hear about that in the film, too. But it's grounded in humanity, as well as real joy, and it was just a wonderful thing to work on. And I miss it every day."Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. (Barry Williams - Pool/Getty Images)(NEW YORK) -- Harvey Weinstein was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years in prison for the sexual assault of Mimi Haley, a former production assistant, in 2006 in New York City.Weinstein proclaimed his innocence, but told Judge Curtis Farber before sentencing, "I am not a perfect person.""I live with many regrets, and sincerely apologize for my actions," the disgraced movie mogul said.Weinstein, 74, said he is "treated like an animal, or less" in custody, and said he will focus his final years on advocating for change within the prison system.Farber told Weinstein that he’s never accepted responsibility."You had it all. Your legacy could have been cemented with greatness," Farber said. "But you threw it all away by assaulting Miriam Haley."Haley, a one-time production assistant on the Weinstein-produced reality show Project Runway, testified that the "unthinkable" happened to her when Weinstein held her down on a bed and forced oral sex on her after she told him no.Haley told the judge Wednesday that she felt like she's been on trial for the last seven years.Weinstein was convicted last year of Haley's assault in a retrial, after his 2020 conviction was overturned. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office asked for a 20-year sentence. On Wednesday, DA Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. thanked Haley "and all of the survivors who came to lend their support.""I'm moved, as we should all be moved, by their courage and their steadfastness through what has obviously been a challenging process," he said.Weinstein’s defense attorney, Marc Agnifilo, said Weinstein has only been convicted of attacking two women, one in New York and one in California. “It's not dozens, it's two,” he told the judge, and said Farber is sentencing him for one case.Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. If I'm 58, 12 years I'll be 70,'" Foxx said, joking about what life might look like by then.Foxx also addressed his health during the interview, nearly three years after suffering a serious medical emergency. The actor has said he suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke in 2023."I'm feeling fantastic," Foxx said. "I went through some stuff; I didn't know if I was gonna be back here."Foxx said the experience has left him with a greater sense of gratitude."Sometimes my daughter says I'm too grateful, because I mean I almost died, so I'm just so thankful for everything," he said.Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. Tom Cruise and his 'Digger' costars speak with ABC News' Chris Connelly in an interview that aired on 'Good Morning America' on Sept. 23, 2026. (ABC News)Tom Cruise is trading action for dark comedy in his new film Digger. The film, out on Oct. 2, follows Cruise as Digger Rockwell, described in a synopsis for the movie as "the most powerful man in the world" who "embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he's unleashed destroys everything.""This is a story about power, greed — about responsible and being irresponsible," Cruise told ABC News' Chris Connelly in an interview about his character. "He's trying to control things that are just — you can't control it. It's not going to happen."When the film's official trailer was released in July, many saw Cruise's transformation as Digger for the first time. In the trailer, the actor is almost unrecognizable in prosthetics and costume. Also starring in the film are Sandra Hüller, John Goodman and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed.Ahmed recalled working with Cruise and described the feeling on set as "intimidating.""For the first few days, I didn't have to act," he told ABC News. "It was intimidating to be on set. With him as Digger Rockwell, there was this hurricane, this kind of operatic character coming at you 100 miles per hour."Hüller also weighed in on working with Cruise and said, "He wants to know what other people think. We could collaborate on that very much, so we were creating things together. The mood on set was so special and always positive and playful. It could have gone on forever. That's my memory of it. We really had a lot of fun. I really had a lot of fun."Cruise told ABC News that he first heard about Digger eight years ago after meeting with director Alejandro G. Iñarritu, who previously directed The Revenant and Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). Cruise said it was also the same day as the first shooting day for Top Gun: Maverick.Leading up to filming for Digger, Cruise was wrapping up filming on Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.Ahmed reflected on the actor's work ethic and nonstop energy."He was doing that kind of thing," Ahmed said. "When we were in rehearsal, we were all exhausted. And Tom's like, 'All right, I'm getting in the water tank now.' The what? He's going into a sub-zero temperature water tank to do a true-life stunt for a mission. He's gonna fly himself there on a helicopter! There's just a relentless kind of dynamo energy here that's inspiring to be around."Cruise said, "It's so fun, because I'm learning constantly."The actor, who has starred in eight Mission: Impossible films, Edge of Tomorrow, War of the Worlds, Jack Reacher and more, has become synonymous with high-octane, high-energy action films. And before playing Maverick in the 1986 film Top Gun, Cruise starred in the romantic drama Endless Love, the coming-of-age teen comedy Risky Business and more, cementing himself as a leading man in Hollywood. But prior to making a name for himself in Hollywood, Cruise worked a number of odd jobs, including being a superintendent's assistant in New York City, working on daily maintenance of a building."I would have to go down and fix their stuff and I was a handyman before, I had many jobs growing up," he said. "I had to go down and fix their heat, I shoveled the ice every day, I made sure that the garbage was taken out, yeah I took care of it. Whatever you need."Reflecting on his film career, Cruise called it a "real gift.""I dreamed of a life to be able to do this for the rest of my life as a kid," he said. "And every day, I'm thinking, 'You know what? I can't control what's going to happen. But what I can control is I can just do the best I can.'"Copyright © 2026, ABC Audio. All rights reserved.]]>
