But, I can't end this 10 year run without discussing it. At least I don't think I should, although it does not necessarily directly correlate with childlessness…although it could. So here goes. Abortion: Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy by removal or expulsion of an embryo or fetus.[nb 1][2] The unmodified word abortion generally refers to induced abortion,[3][4] or deliberate actions to end a pregnancy.[nb 2] Abortion occurring without intervention is known as spontaneous abortion or "miscarriage", and occurs in roughly 30–40% of all pregnancies.[5][6] Common reasons for inducing an abortion are birth-timing and limiting family size.[7][8][9] Other reasons include maternal health, an inability to afford a child, domestic violence, lack of support, feelings of being too young, wishing to complete an education or advance a career, and not being able, or willing, to raise a child conceived as a result of rape or incest.[7][9][10] As you can see here, there are several types of abortion and several reasons for abortion. The issues around abortion, as we well know, include such questions as: is abortion wrong or is it right in certain cases? Christians may ask 'will a woman go to hell if she has an abortion?' Is it right or wrong based on the reason? OK, that's the question on an abortion a woman chooses to have. Now I am not going to insult your intelligence, especially if you are 100% against abortion no matter the reason it may be needed or happens, but here goes: I often wonder if those who are against abortions no matter what, realize a miscarriage is a type of abortion? And I often wonder this because of the conversations I hear in real life and in the political arena. The conversations where people simply say they are absolutely against abortion and I wonder if they did any research on abortion, the different types, or reasons. The fact that in some cases the woman has no choice because her body is controlling the outcome. When most people think of abortion, without doing any additional research on the issue, basing their beliefs on just what they have heard, they see it only as the act of terminating a pregnancy. Many people tend to see the termination as selfish, as murder. In a 2025 Gallup Poll, 40% say abortion is morally wrong, while 49% say it is morally acceptable. Overall U.S. opinion on abortion morality In the 2025 Gallup poll: 40% said abortion is morally wrong. 49% said abortion is morally acceptable. That was a little surprising to me as I thought the numbers would be neck and neck, but be that as it may, there is still a good percentage of the public who believe abortion is morally wrong. But I ask, what type of abortion are they referring to? Have they thought critically about the type of abortion they consider when making an answer? Those who believe it is morally wrong, what about miscarriage? What about ectopic pregnancy? What about dare i say, gray areas? Gray areas such as abortion bans delaying care, causing great danger, even death, to the mother? What about cases like the one involving Amber Thurmon? Link to the story in the show notes. Do you think I am making excuses for abortion? For having an abortion? I created this episode to have us think about why abortion, as well as why not abortion. In fact, I wanted to talk about abortion, not to tell you how I feel about it, about my opinion, but to ask for critical thinking. I honestly believe critical thinking is lacking in many subjects, not just abortion. And I know some of you may say wrong is wrong and right is right. Please do not try to force abortion on me. Please do not try to get me to agree that abortion is right. Well, that is not what I am doing. Actually, what I am doing is asking for two things: Research the reasons why abortions happen or are chosen. Think about what if it were you or a loved one who had a miscarriage, an ectopic pregnancy or decided on an abortion due to being attacked, whether as an adult or as a child. How would you deal with it? How would you interact with the person? I think my biggest issue with subjects like this is the way Christians treat people who have or are about to make certain decisions, like having an abortion. How do we talk to, judge, interact with people who made the decision to have an abortion? Outside of the fact that if your body aborts or wants to abort, it is out of a woman's control. As I mentioned earlier, I'm not sure if those who haven't done the research fully understand that. Indeed, being childless not by choice. And we all know there are many reasons for childlessness, including medical issues such as endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis, miscarriage, PCOS, and so many other physical and physiological issues. Trauma, both physical and emotional, can be a cause. Being born without a uterus, which I have discussed on this podcast before. I will put a link to that interview in the show notes for this episode. And then just the unknown, also known as idiopathic infertility. I want to talk about ectopic pregnancy because I have never discussed it. But let's step back a little. Let's talk about the uterus. And I realize I am speaking to the choir here. I think most of you know what a uterus is and what it does. So let me say this in one or two sentences: The uterus is where a baby grows once the sperm fertilizes the egg. So if the egg, sperm, and fertilization end up anywhere outside of the uterus, the pregnancy will not thrive. In fact, the pregnancy will not go to term. And most times that ending up outside the uterus means the components I just mentioned: the sperm and egg, end up in the fallopian tubes. It's like driving down a highway, the fallopian tubes. You are supposed to end up at a destination, the uterus, but you get stuck on the highway instead. And sometimes getting stuck on the highway can cause irreparable damage. Meaning the possibility of no future natural pregnancies. Although we have two fallopian tubes, so if one is affected by an ectopic pregnancy, if the other one is healthy, a viable pregnancy is possible. The risk of an ectopic pregnancy is 1-2%. It sounds like a small percentage, but a percentage is a percentage, isn't it? It's small until it happens to you. And human physiology is not something that can be contested. In other words, there is no way to have a baby successfully grow outside of the womb, the uterus. And again, I know I don't need to say this, but I am not referring to other types of creating pregnancy, like the gift of a successful IVF. I am talking about how a pregnancy starts biologically, and the only way it can continue. So, ectopic pregnancies. 'An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, typically in the fallopian tube.'--AI. Ectopic pregnancies are often caused by damaged fallopian tubes, which prevent a fertilized egg from reaching the uterus, leading it to implant and grow elsewhere. Risk factors for tubal damage and subsequent ectopic pregnancies include pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, Previous abdominal pelvic surgery Smoking. Other risk factors include conception while using an intrauterine device (IUD) After a tubal ligation (sterilization), Ongoing fertility treatments. Age: Being older than age 35 can also be a risk factor. I want to stop here and note that an ectopic pregnancy can be very dangerous. It is suggested that if you believe or have been diagnosed with an ectopic pregnancy, you should see your physician immediately. Symptoms: Vaginal bleeding or spotting Abdominal pain, often one-sided Shoulder pain Nausea and vomiting Dizziness or fainting Now, the good news in all of this is that the chances of a successful pregnancy after an ectopic pregnancy are good, ranging from 65 to 85%, especially as time goes on. Meaning if you get pregnant again in 18 months, a successful pregnancy is 65% likely. In two years, it is 85% likely. I will say again, if we have arrived at the fact that we will not be having children. Maybe we have already had the hysterectomy. Maybe we have stopped IVF. We have just come to terms and decided to move on with our lives as childless not by choice people. That's what this podcast was created to address. But I also believe it is important to know more than our own journey. And that if we ever want to discuss more than our own journey, we are in the know. We can intelligently discuss as much or as little as we would like. Knowledge allows us to have the ball in our court. Maybe you have a family member or friend who is or has suffered from an ectopic pregnancy. Maybe you have, and then the pregnancy never happened for you. Either way, this is a slice of knowledge. Marketers create whitepapers to educate their audience about a particular issue or explain and promote a particular methodology. (May 11, 2023.) I wrote and read a white paper 10 years ago to explain the beginning of my platform. I explained why I started the podcast This will be the final year for the podcast. December 2025 will be the official final episode. I did ask my podcast producer to remain open to any future episodes after December, and he agreed. I started this podcast with the idea that I wanted to speak with all childless not by choice women around the world. For several years from the time I started the podcast, I had impostor syndrome. Imagine I am podcasting about a subject matter that affected me personally, and I still had imposter syndrome. It started to dissipate as I got fantastic guests and attended podcast conventions over the years. Have I reached everyone? The number of people globally that I set out to reach? Is that considered a comparison? Imposter syndrome became a comparison. Will I ever know if I reached everyone I was supposed to reach? I don't know. The people in the know in podcasting say it's not about the downloads. It's about the message. Am I clear? Is my sound good? Is my content good? Do I have repeat listeners? I know for a fact that I am solidly average in my downloads, so there's that. I have been thinking of putting down the podcast for well over a year. I told myself I could continue. But deep down, I know it is time. I know there are other podcasts in the space now. The voices may be different, but I believe that will be OK. I know there is a next, and I will not know what that next is until I put down this podcast. I will keep the podcast live for at least the next year, through December 2026. At that point, I will decide on next steps. So to be clear, I will have episodes for the rest of 2025. They will not be afterthought episodes. They will be well thought out and well researched, just like all of my previous episodes. I don't know if I will turn the podcast into a book. I hear some podcasters do that. It's too soon to say. I wrote and read a white paper 10 years ago to explain the beginning of my platform. I explained why I started the podcast This will be the final year for the podcast. December 2025 will be the official final episode. I did ask my podcast producer to remain open to any future episodes after December, and he agreed. I started this podcast with the idea that I wanted to speak with all childless not by choice women around the world. Reaching all ethnicities, all races, all religions, because childless not by choice transcends all of those man-made attributes. If he passed, he would earn a Green Band. The green band enables them to swim wherever they want (in whatever depth) without me having to be with him. On Friday morning, the women of our group decided to go shopping at the Outlet Malls while the men would take the kids swimming at the resort pool. We left around 10:30am. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> At about 11:20 I received a phone call from by brother in law, Marshall. He very calmly said (something along the lines of), "Alissa? There has been an incident at the pool. Lucas went under water. He is not breathing. There are emergency people here working on him right now." We immediately took off for the car. I had handed my phone to one of the other women as I hyperventilated my way through the maze of an outlet mall. Before we could even reach the car (maybe three minutes later), Marshall called my phone back and relayed the message that they were able to get Lucas breathing again. I immediately dropped to my knees in the middle of the mall. I was not okay. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> We got the information that Lucas was being taken by ambulance to Dr. P. Phillips Hospital with Matt. We got in the car and took off for that hospital. As soon as I arrived I noticed Matt getting there at the same time. I ran to catch up with him. As it turned out, Matt had run into our hotel room to get his wallet and the ambulance had taken off without him. Which was fine. Fix my baby. The resort had immediately offered a towncar to take Matthew to the hospital. The wrong hospital. The ambulance had taken Lucas to Celebration Hospital. Both my ride and Matt's had dropped us off and left. So, we were stranded at the wrong hospital. I was able to get ahold of our car and had them turn around and come back. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Finally, we arrived at the hospital. As soon as we did, they took us to Lucas. He was sleeping. I walked over to him and fussed and rubbed him for a moment and called his name. He woke, opened his eyes and started crying for a second and then went back to sleep. Within a couple of minutes, my husband and his brother, David were able to give Lucas a Priesthood Blessing. They placed an NG tube up his nose and down his throat into his stomach to remove the contents of his stomach. He had swallowed a lot of water. He started screaming. These are good things. He cried for about twenty minutes saying over and over, "Take it out of my throat, you're hurting me, please!" I am told that the fact he was talking so quickly after was a VERY GOOD SIGN.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> From there, we were transferred (again, by ambulance) to the Florida Hospital for Children (Walt Disney Pavilion) Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Best hospital ever. By about 5pm Lucas was waking up enough to request a movie (and food which he wasn't allowed to have) and by 9pm, they had removed the NG tube and was allowed some apple juice. All miracles. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> The next morning they took him off of oxygen and he was on room air only. Around 10am they allowed him to have a bowl of Fruit Loops. By 11am, we were cleared to go home. We left the hospital at 1:05pm. About 25 hours after it all started. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> We don't know how long Lucas was underwater for or for exactly how long he had not been breathing. The doctors estimate that it could not have been more than a minute or two (too long in my opinion, obviously). My husband was at the other end of the pool when it happened. He was swimming with one of our other children. Lucas is a very adventurous kid and had been practicing underwater swimming in an area of the pool that was three feet deep. Where he could touch. He does not know how to swim by himself. He wears a floating device when we go to the pool. He had been wearing it, and took it off. My husband told him several times to put it back on, but Lucas is Lucas.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> Lucas doesn't remember much about the incident. What he has said was that he was jumping up and down in the water. We think he just wandered into an area that was above his head (he's not very tall). </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> HERE IS OUR MIRACLE:</div> <div> Lucas was pulled from the water by Dr. Robert Kazim and his sister Dr. Debra Kazim who just happened to be 1.Staying at our resort 2. At the pool at that moment. Dr. Robert is a Pediatric Anesthesiologist. His sister is also an anesthesiologist. I am told if you want anyone in the entire hospital doing CPR on your kid, it's a ped anesth. My pediatrician started crying tears of joy when she heard. The Drs immediately started CPR on Lucas. Chest compressions, breathing, everything. They saved his life. It is estimated they did CPR for about 5 minutes when Lucas started breathing again on his own. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> I am also told that of the adults at the pool that day, over half of them were Physicians. </div> <div> My son has a host of guardian angels watching over him. Our Heavenly Father has just made it abundantly clear that my son is a very important person and that He has something special in store for him. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> I know that a lot of you who will read this are not of my faith (Latter-day Saint - Mormon) but I need to take this opportunity to bear testimony.</div> <div> <br /></div> <div> I know that my Heavenly Father loves me. I feel of His love every single time I look at my son. I know that He has brought my son back to me for a reason. I know that I need to be doing a better job as Lucas and ALL of my children's mother. It has been made clear to me that other things in this life are not important. Nothing is as important as these little people we are raising. I know that my greatest joy in this life and the next will come from my family and I need to be making a greater concerted effort to make them my first priority. Things don't matter. Money is unimportant. Fame, fortune: irrelevant. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> I also know that the Lord has given me the amazing gift of seeing the way His hand is working in my life. I am so grateful. I have never felt more loved. When I look in the mirror, I see myself, but I almost don't recognize myself. I look like a different person. All things in my life will be forever colored by this incident. I see things through the lens of the near-death experience of my son. No one in our family can ever be the same. </div> <div> <br /></div> <div> We are different. We are better. He's living it up with all the jello he can manage and every Disney movie at his fingertips. I feel like my children would prefer to move from the TV to the computer to my Kindle (playing games) and back to the TV without ever actually moving. At first she was begging to not have to compete. She was so nervous. But she did great. She came in second in her heat for breaststroke and third in another. We encourage this because I only ever did gymnastics and my husband only ran track. Come to find out, she's quite good! At the end of the season, her coach named her the MVP of the team. So proud. Believe it or not, Miles won our congregation's costume contest. It probably helped that he was casting spells on people all night.
