Super nice people as always at these kinds of events. Very well organized from start to finish. Fantastic volunteers and food at the halfway checkpoint and at the finish line. All the fast guys showed up and showed how it's done. Me, I was just happy to participate and finish in one piece. Highlight of my ride happened when I had a run in with a marsh or bog, not sure what you call it. I thought I could ride through it until my front wheel sunk in over the hub and I went over the bars. I put my arms out and they sunk up to my biceps! Kept my head out of the muck though. I just had to laugh and wade my bike to dry land. Everyone else around had a good laugh too as they found the totally dry path around the wetness <strong>: )</strong> Good times! Had fun riding with John <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error">Hatcher</span> and Dean <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error">McCauley</span> towards the end. Extremely happy with those results considering I'm a slow and steady kind of rider, and there were some very talented fast guys there in both races. Lots of fun! I forgot my camera at home, but there are a bunch of great pictures on <a href="; from the mountain bike race.2009/07/great-weekend-up-in-grand-forks-for.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Simmons)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18476876.post-2113860735655421162Tue, 07 Jul 2009 03:36:00 +00002009-07-06T22:57:10.208-05:00Had a great ride on Friday. It was about how when you are young and have few responsibilities. How easy it is to just pick up and go for a long ride or tour. But, as you get older and have more to worry about. How challenging it can be to leave home. This article rang true for me as Rick, Gabby and myself left Grand Forks on Friday. It was very hard to leave my new son and wife to go do a race in another country. But as we got closer to Portage La Prarie I was thinking more and more about the monster that is the <a href=" Assiniboine 300</a>.<br /><br />Last year at this race I made it to the halfway mark, and after leaving on the second half, I was caught in a nasty thunderstorm that had me lying in a ditch hoping I wouldn't be hit by lightning. As we got to the hotel this year it was pouring rain, and the wind was howling. Not a good sign before a race that is challenging enough without mother nature adding to it. Fortunately on Saturday morning the sun was shining, but the wind was still doing it's thing.<br /><br />The race started just after 8:00am with Lindsay leading everyone out in his van. I stayed near the back of the group. I didn't want to get caught up in trying to hang on to Blair Saunders and the other fast guys like last year. I told myself to just go my own pace and see what happens. After about 50km I was competing for the course sweeper position. I wasn't feeling very fast at all. The mind was starting to play the "Let's quit, what's the point in riding this far anyway" game. That's when I caught up to Nathan Barten around Rathwell. I was pretty sure I was done for the day, and had Rick been there with the van, I would've called it quits. Thankfully Rick had gone futher up the course, so Nathan and I decided to stop for a double cheeseburger with fries and gravy at the Diner just off course. It was sooooo delicious. Nathan talked me into at least riding to the first checkpoint in La Riviere. We took off for the checkpoint. The rolling hills started, and the wind was relentless. Nathan rode off ahead on his super lightweight fixie. I caught up to Mike Harrison just before a wind farm. We yo-yo'd a little bit, and even stopped to take some pictures of the impressive wind turbines. Then I rode on ahead into the headwind alone. Somewhere along the way Nathan had gotten off course a little and I passed him in the process. Just before getting to La Riviere, there is an impressive section of gravel road. It runs along the Pembina Valley. Beautiful country in Canada. I had to stop and take a couple pictures. I always kick myself for not stopping to take pictures during races, so I didn't pass this opportunity up. I rolled into La Riviere around 5:30pm I think. Rick's daughter, Gabby, signed me in, and Lindsay bought me supper. Another hot meal in the belly. Mmmmmm. I spent about two hours there eating, talking and trying to come up with a good excuse to call it a day. But, Lindsay said I looked strong and wouldn't have any of it. So with a little encouragement I headed out to the second checkpoint at Rock Lake.<br /><br />I had to stop and take a picture of what must have been Lindsay's school back in the day <strong>: )</strong></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210123232059719250" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" /> <p align="center">Mike Harrison and the wind farm.</p><p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210124500385398386" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" /></p><p align="center">Pembina Valley just before La Riviere.</p><p><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5210125833896237826" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" /></p><p>Climbing out of the Pembina Gorge towards Rock Lake I started to feel pretty good. The wind had also died down which I'm sure had a lot to do with me feeling better. I put the hammer down "Vino style" and flew into Crystal City stopping only long enough to get a Coke from a pop machine. I downed the Coke and headed out just as fast as I came into town. The sun was starting to set, and there was a good sized thunderstorm on the horizon. As it started to get dark I went to turn on my light, but it didn't work. So I just kept riding. Making sure to have my rear tail lights on and stay way to the side of the road when a car would come. Not to long after total darkness I could see a red blinky in the distance. I gave chase as fast as I could go in the dark. Eventually I got close enough to see it was three riders, and they were just turning on to a steep downhill. I turned on the jets and came flying up to them just at the bottom of the hill. They hadn't seen me behind them since I didn't have a headlight, so they were pretty startled. It was Cory Smith, Tomec Jasiakiewicz and Jay Hawranik. We all rode into the Rock Lake checkpoint together at 11:35pm. Blair Saunders and John Hawranik were still there. The checkpoint was at Kenny's lakeside cabin. What a guy! He had chili on the stove and enough Coke to open a convenience store. It was great! Lindsay was there as well, and was really happy to see the other three guys I rode in with. It seems they went 20km off course with the wind, all down hill. After realizing their mistake they had to ride back uphill into the wind those same 20km. Ouch! Tomec and Jay decided to pack it in at Rock Lake after that mishap. Cory and I packed up, reloaded with food and batteries for my light (THANKS JAY!!!!), and headed out for the remaining kilometers at around 12:30am.<br /><br />Cory and I rode very well together. Keeping a fast pace, and stopping at each turn to make sure we were still on course. The night was cold with very little wind. The valleys were filled with bone chilling air and fog, but the climbs out of them warmed me up quickly. Just around sunrise I started fading, and Cory rode ahead. I was getting the same sore shoulders and neck I had at the Arrowhead. I slowed way down, and even walked for a short while. Finally I was close to Portage La Prairie again and just went as fast as I could back to the finish at Don Sisson's farm. It was 8:20am. Just over 24 hours for the "regular" course. I was very happy to be done. Don gave me a ride to the hotel and I had a little breakfast and took a nap before the awards BBQ.<br /><br />What a great event. Lindsay put together one heck of a course. The volunteers and checkpoints were spectacular. Thanks to everyone involved!!! I highly recommend checking this race out next year. And hopefully I'll see Lindsay and Dallas at the Arrowhead in February.<br /><br />When I got home I was checking my e-mail. I get these quotes of the day from the <a href=" for a Better Life</a>. The quote from this weekend was very fitting and reminded me why I love to do these types of races.<br /><br /><strong>"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for"</strong><br />-William G.T. Fresh off his late night training sessions in the Twin Cities with <a href="; last weekend, I knew I was in for one helluva ride. Trent has been instrumental in my preparation for the <a href="; next weekend. This was the last chance to get in a good workout before the taper. We headed west on a gravel road not too far from my house. Into a slight headwind we pushed on for what seemed forever. Then we turned south for a few miles until we found a rutted up minimum maintenance road. We plowed through the muck dodging four wheeler ruts and shotgun shells. Finally we came to a dike that brought us back home. It was super soft from the recent thunderstorms, and full of horse hoof holes. Trent was happy he broke in his new ride with some mud and horse poo <strong>: )</strong> We ended up back at my place for some much needed coffee. Great ride Trent! Gonna keep the schedule pretty light this year again.<br /><br />Putting in some sod on Saturday. That should be fun. Not to mention good upper body training. Hopefully it doesn't rain as forecasted. Why? Because of the spectacular profits that one of those companies reported Thursday morning.<br /> <br /> Among those suddenly wealthier executives, by the way, are the corporate medical directors who decide whether or not patients will get coverage for treatments their doctors believe might save their lives.<br /> <br /> <a href=" Group</a>, the biggest health insurer in terms of revenue and market value, earned so much more during the first three months of this year than Wall Street expected that investors rushed to buy shares of every one of the seven health insurers that comprise the managed care sector. In my view, it would be more accurate to call it the managed care cartel.<br /> <br /> UnitedHealth is always the first of the big seven to announce earnings every quarter, so investors consider it a bellwether. If UnitedHealth exceeds Wall Street's expectations, as it has been doing <a href=", investors assume that the other six will do likewise. Sure enough, all seven -- </a><a href=", CIGNA</a>, Coventry, Health Net, <a href=";, UnitedHealth and <a href=" </a>-- saw their stock prices close Thursday afternoon at or near 52-week highs.<br /> <br /> UnitedHealth's shares shot up more than 8 percent during the day. Increases of that magnitude are so rare that I could almost hear the champagne corks popping in the Minnetonka, Minnesota office of UnitedHealth's CEO, Stephen J. Hemsley.<br /> <br /> Wall Street analysts had worried that health insurers would have such a hard time complying with the provisions of the year-old health care reform law that their profit margins would decline. Those concerns were put to rest when UnitedHealth reported that its operating margins were "stable" at 8.7 percent in the quarter. The company's stellar performance should also put to rest -- forever -- the myth that "ObamaCare" is "bleeding insurers dry," as industry apologist Sally Pipes contended in a Feb. 24 commentary in Forbes.<br /> <br /> Noting that UnitedHealth's 13 percent increase in profits prompted the company to raise its full-year earnings forecast, the Minneapolis Star Tribune opined, "Life under new health care reform laws may not be so rough after all."<br /> <br /> Indeed. Consider these numbers: UnitedHealth's profit during the first three months of this year increased to $1.35 billion from $1.19 billion a year ago. When you do the math to determine the company's earnings per share, the result is nothing short of jaw-dropping. On that basis, UnitedHealth's profit jumped from $1.03 to $1.22 per share. Wall Street analysts had been expecting the company to earn just 89 cents a share. When you beat Wall Street's expectations by 33 cents a share, you have accomplished something that most CEOs can only dream about.<span class="fullpost">&nbsp;</span><br /> <a href=" reading here. </a>2011/04/insurers-getting-rich-by-not-paying-for.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-22183885555816732Thu, 28 Apr 2011 17:23:00 +00002011-04-28T10:26:20.286-07:00Massachusetts Dems Pass Bill to 'Eliminate Collective Bargaining as We Know It'By Mike Elk, a third-generation union organizer and labor journalist based in Washington, D.C.<br /> <a href=" /> April 28th, 2011 6:24 AM&nbsp; <br /> <br /> <b><i>Last night, the Massachusetts House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill (111-42) to strip public-sector workers of their ability to bargain collectively for healthcare.</i></b> The rhetoric surrounding the bill, proposed by Democratic State House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo, is in many ways similar to what Wisconsinites recently heard as Gov. Walker pushed his infamous unionbusting bill.<br /> <br /> <blockquote><b>But how could a state in which Democrats control both the State House and the Governor’s mansion be pushing a bill that attacks workers’ rights to collectively bargain?</b></blockquote><br /> The State of Massachusetts currently faces a budget deficit of $1.9 billion. House Democrats say that by limiting the collective bargaining rights of public employees over healthcare they can save the state $100 million a year. Democrats in Massachusetts, much like Democrats in New York, have focused on cutting basic government services and workers’ wages instead of raising taxes on the richest. Thus, House Speaker DeLeo proposed the plan that would limit the rights of employees to collective bargain over healthcare. And many Democrats, who have been supported by labor unions in the state, passed it.<br /> <br /> “We are going to fight this thing to the bitter end,’’ Robert J. Haynes, president of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, told the Boston Globe last night.&nbsp; “Massachusetts is not the place that takes collective bargaining away from public employees.’’<br /> <br /> <a href=" reading here.</a><br /> <span class="fullpost"><br /> </span>2011/04/april-28th-2011-624-am-massachusetts.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-8146275597298300659Tue, 26 Apr 2011 23:59:00 +00002011-04-26T17:02:37.066-07:00Connect the Dots: "Civics and Policy Basics for the Busy Majority"<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;">Connect the Dots&nbsp;&nbsp; </span></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href=" /> <br /> <div style="background-color: #0b5394; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: yellow;">Budgets and Deficits and Debt, Oh My!</span></span></div><br /> <br /> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="231" src="; width="320" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href=" here for slides, and to print booklet</a></td></tr> </tbody></table>Andrea Witte's new website urges you to<br /> <br /> HELP SPREAD THE WORD:<br /> <br /> "Share these presentations (or even just a single slide) with your friends, family members and co-workers. <b><span style="color: #cc0000;">Let’s keep asking for more dots and keep connecting the dots to good policies </span></b>so we can get our country back on track. Paul Ryan's plan to privatize Medicare would accelerate a trend started several years ago by corporate CEOs and their political allies to shift ever-increasing amounts of risk from Big Business and the government to workers and retirees.<br /> <br /> If enacted, the Ryan plan would represent a windfall of unprecedented proportions for insurance corporations and other businesses.<br /> <br /> For millions of average Americans, many of whom already are finding it impossible to save for retirement, it would represent financial calamity. The nation's middle class would pay dearly for Ryan's proposed shredding of the social safety net that Medicare currently provides.<br /> <br /> Ryan, chairman of the House Budget Committee, wants to dismantle the Medicare program and replace it with a system of vouchers. Starting in 2022, the government would give the average 65-year-old Medicare beneficiary $8,000 a year to buy coverage from a private insurer. That's the amount health care analysts estimate will be what the Medicare program will spend on every 65-year-old in 2022 if the government doesn't turn it over to private insurance companies.<br /> <br /> While that might sound fair on the surface, it would actually be a very bad deal for people who turn 65 that year, compared to those who turn 65 in 2021. That's because commercial insurance plans are much more expensive, and operate far less efficiently, than the current Medicare program.<br /> <br /> The amount of money commercial plans actually spend to pay medical claims has been declining rapidly over the past several years while the amount they spend on administrative activities such as marketing and underwriting -- and to pay executives and reward shareholders -- has been increasing. That's why Congress included a provision in last year's health care reform law to require insurance firms to spend no more than 20 percent of their policyholders' premiums on overhead. By contrast, the current Medicare program spends just 3 percent of its budget on administration. <br /> <br /> <a href=" reading here. </a><br /> <br /> <i>For 20 years, Wendell Potter worked as a senior executive at health insurance companies, and saw how they confuse their customers and dump the sick all so they can satisfy their Wall Street investors. <br /> <br /> Wendell Potter is the Senior Fellow on Health Care for the Center for Media and Democracy in Madison, Wisconsin.&nbsp; Read his blog&nbsp; </i><a href=";2011/04/ryans-medicare-plan-would-be-windfall.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-6407002875659460430Thu, 21 Apr 2011 20:27:00 +00002011-04-21T13:27:21.826-07:00The Real News: Draconian Michigan Bill Promoted by Major Corporations<b>American Legislative Exchange Council organizes national campaign to pass "model" legislation in states&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</b><br /> <br /> <b>Watch Video: </b><br /> <br /> <object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="; height="258" width="425"><param name="width" value="425"/><param name="height" value="258"/><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true"/><param name="src" value="; /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="; width="425" height="258"&nbsp; allowfullscreen="true"> <a href=" at The Real News</a> </embed></object>2011/04/real-news-draconian-michigan-bill.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-3244008668485194904Thu, 21 Apr 2011 15:49:00 +00002011-04-21T08:49:41.837-07:00My Medicare Deficit SolutionBy James Kwak<br /> <a href=" Scenario</a><br /> <br /> David Brooks, perhaps realizing that it was a bad idea to swallow a politician’s PR bullet points whole, is now backpedaling. The Ryan Plan, which he <a href=" hailed </a>as “the most comprehensive and most courageous budget reform proposal any of us have seen in our lifetimes,” now has the principal virtue of existing: “Because he had the courage to take the initiative, Paul Ryan’s budget plan will be the starting point for future discussions.”<br /> <br /> As I’ve <a href=" before,</a> the Ryan Plan is just one <b><i>bad idea dressed up with the false precision of lots of numbers</i></b>: changing Medicare from a health insurance program to a cash redistribution program that gives up on managing health care costs. Here’s the key chart from the <a href=" repor</a><br /> <br /> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="393" src="; width="400" /></a></div><br /> <br /> Here’s how to read that chart. In 2030, under current law, a 65-year-old Medicare beneficiary’s health care will cost $60. (Obviously, this is using an index, not real dollars.) Medicare will pay $35 and the beneficiary will pay $25 in Part B premiums and cost sharing. Under the CBO’s more likely “alternative fiscal scenario,” her health care will cost $71, of which Medicare will pay $41. Under the Ryan plan, the same health care purchased in the private market will cost $100; “Medicare” will give her a $32 voucher, and she’ll pay the last $68 on her own.<br /> <br /> The bottom line is that the Ryan Plan increases beneficiary costs more than it reduces government costs. In a weird sense, it’s a bizarrely pro-government plan: it helps the government’s bottom line at the expense of ordinary people.<br /> <br /> So what should we do? Most importantly, we have to recognize that there are two separate problems, and they are not equal. The primary problem is health care inflation. The secondary problem is the long-term Medicare deficit. That’s a secondary problem because it’s largely a result of the primary problem.<span class="fullpost">&nbsp;</span><br /> <br /> <a href=" class="fullpost">Continue reading here.</span></a><br /> <br /> <span class="fullpost">And here is the rest of it.</span>2011/04/my-medicare-deficit-solution.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-5505713884427923359Tue, 19 Apr 2011 22:58:00 +00002011-04-19T15:59:55.376-07:00How Ayn Rand Became an American IconBy Johann Hari<br /> <a href=" /> Posted Monday, Nov. 2, 2009, at 7:01 AM ET <span class="fullpost">&nbsp;</span><br /> <br /> <i><b>The perverse allure of a damaged woman.</b></i><br /> <br /> Ayn Rand is one of America's great mysteries. She was an amphetamine-addicted author of sub-Dan Brown potboilers, who in her spare time wrote lavish torrents of praise for serial killers and the Bernie Madoff-style embezzlers of her day. She opposed democracy on the grounds that "the masses"—her readers—were "lice" and "parasites" who scarcely deserved to live. Yet she remains one of the most popular writers in the United States, still selling 800,000 books a year from beyond the grave. She regularly tops any list of books that Americans say have most influenced them. Since the great crash of 2008, her writing has had another Benzedrine rush, as Rush Limbaugh hails her as a prophetess. With her assertions that government is "evil" and selfishness is "the only virtue," she is the patron saint of the tea-partiers and the death panel doomsters. So how did this little Russian bomb of pure immorality in a black wig become an American icon?<br /> <br /> Two new biographies of Rand—<a href=" of the Market </a>by Jennifer Burns and <a href=" Rand and the World She Made</a> by Anne Heller—try to puzzle out this question, showing how her arguments found an echo in the darkest corners of American political life.* But the books work best, for me, on a level I didn't expect. They are thrilling psychological portraits of a horribly damaged woman who deserves the one thing she spent her life raging against: compassion.<br /> <a href=" /> <br /> Continue reading here.</a><br /> For an edgier take on Ayn Rand and her admiration for a serial killer <a href=" here.</a>2011/04/how-ayn-rand-became-american-icon.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-353925142018531877Tue, 19 Apr 2011 22:29:00 +00002011-04-19T15:29:28.115-07:00VIDEO: The Truth About GOP Hero Ayn RandBy Jeff Sprouss<br /> <a href=" </a><br /> April 18, 2011<br /> <br /> &nbsp;A film adaptation of the 1957 novel Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand, opened this past Friday. It prizes test scores above critical thinking and literacy. It celebrates rote vocational training and the singular, amoral skill of making money. It churns out stunted human products, lacking the capacity and vocabulary to challenge the assumptions and structures of the corporate state. It funnels them into a caste system of drones and systems managers. It transforms a democratic state into a feudal system of corporate masters and serfs.<br /> <br /> Teachers, their unions under attack, are becoming as replaceable as minimum-wage employees at Burger King. We spurn real teachers—those with the capacity to inspire children to think, those who help the young discover their gifts and potential—and replace them with instructors who teach to narrow, standardized tests. <b>These instructors obey. They teach children to obey. And that is the point. </b>The No Child Left Behind program, modeled on the “Texas Miracle,” is a fraud. It worked no better than our deregulated financial system. But when you shut out debate these dead ideas are self-perpetuating.<br /> <br /> <a href=" reading here.</a><br /> <span class="fullpost"></span>2011/04/why-united-states-is-destroying-its.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-7431326686961839126Mon, 11 Apr 2011 17:47:00 +00002011-04-11T10:52:38.106-07:00War on the WeakBy Jonathan Chait, Editor of the <i>New Republic</i><br /> <a href=" /> April 10, 2011<br /> <br /> <i style="color: #0b5394;">26Dems Editorial Note: This author traces the philosophical origins of the Tea Party that sprang from the cult of Ayn Rand, whose thinking turned Marxism upside down through advocacy for rewarding&nbsp; wealthy&nbsp; producers and punishing "parasite" workers.&nbsp;&nbsp; This stark philosophy demands that the weak suffer, a concept that would upend American society, and abandon the role of government in preserving equality of opportunity and supplying necessities for survival of "the least of these." Rep. Paul Ryan is devoted to replacing American democracy with Ayn Randism. <b style="color: #cc0000;">Read this important article that explains the frightening reality behind the uncompromising GOP budget demands that put Medicare and Social Security on the chopping block this week.</b></i><br /> <br /> <br /> <blockquote><b><i>How the GOP came to view the poor as parasites—and the rich as our rightful rulers.</i></b></blockquote>Last week the Republican Party sounded two distinct voices. First we heard the angry demands of the Tea Party, speaking through its hardline conservative allies in the House, pushing the government to the brink of a shutdown. But then emerged the soothing tones of Paul Ryan, the House Budget Committee chairman, who fashions himself the intellectual leader of the party, unveiling a budget manifesto he calls the “Path to Prosperity.”<br /> <br /> Ryan portrays his goals in reassuringly pecuniary terms—he’s just the friendly neighborhood accountant here to help balance your checkbook. “I have a knack for numbers,” he chirps. ABC News compared him to a character in Dave, the corny 1993 movie about an average Joe who mistakenly assumes the presidency and calls in his CPA buddy—that would be Ryan—to scour the federal budget and bring it into balance. If he has any flaw, he just cares too much about rescuing the country from debt, gosh darn it!<span class="fullpost">&nbsp;</span><br /> <a href=" /> </a><br /> <a href=" reading here.</a>2011/04/war-on-weak.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-1566640563033412808Mon, 11 Apr 2011 17:01:00 +00002011-04-11T10:02:31.394-07:00Are We a Society?By Gary Hart, Scholar in Residence at the University of Colorado<br /> <a href=" Post</a><br /> April 4, 2011<br /> <blockquote><b>When asked about the impact of her draconian policies on British society, then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is reported to have said, "There is no such thing as society."</b></blockquote><br /> The current U.S. budget confrontation raises the same issue: Is there such a thing as an American society? The Oxford dictionary defines society as: "the sum of human conditions and activity regarded as a whole functioning interdependently" and as "the customs and organization of an ordered community."<br /> <br /> The current confrontation between parties and ideologies is over the role of government. But even more deeply it is a foundational disagreement over whether we are a society, a community, or whether we are a collection of individuals inhabiting the same geographical space.<br /> <br /> If we are all "in this together," then we share more than just an interest in collective security. And if we have collective interests, the instrument by which we pursue and promote those interests is the national government, not Wall Street or the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.<br /> <br /> As we learned in 1929 and 2008, markets can fail, usually through greed and lack of regulation. Although a rising tide lifts all boats, a falling tide lowers all boats, except for the gilded yachts.<br /> <br /> The Goldwater-Reagan-Gingrich-Tea Party revolutions all called into question whether we are a society and therefore whether we act through our national government to pursue our common interests. Though virtually all mature democracies have basically resolved this question decades ago, t<b>he people of the United States seem unable to do so. </b>Many Americans continue to believe we can have the public services a very large majority wants without paying very much for them. Thus the "waste, fraud, and abuse" of the Reagan years. Or a recurring vocal minority continues to argue that we should do away with those services altogether and devil-take-the-hindmost.<br /> <br /> <a href=" reading here.</a>2011/04/are-we-society.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Unknown)tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7347526507578278876.post-6870892859728188092Sun, 10 Apr 2011 07:06:00 +00002011-04-10T08:51:14.590-07:00The Religious Right's Anti-Union CrusadeBy Josh Harkinson<br /> <a href=" Jones</a><br /> Mon Apr. 4, 2011 3:17 AM PDT<br /> <br /> <br /> <a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="72" src="; width="400" /></a><br /> <b>Wisconsin's ongoing labor battle has officially become a holy war. </b>The Family Research Council, the evangelical advocacy organization founded by James Dobson, has been dipping into its war chest to defend Republican Governor Scott Walker's efforts to curtail collective bargaining for public-sector unions. from the underside was that missing earring!&nbsp; What good luck!</div> <div class="p2"> <br /></div> <div class="p1"> Years later, at a weekend long soccer tournament, I lost one of those earrings again on the first day of the tournament.&nbsp; Discovering the loss at the hotel that night, I was again heartbroken.&nbsp; It rained the whole next day, but soccer play didn't stop.&nbsp; I walked multiple fields looking for the lost earring with no luck.&nbsp; On the last day of the tournament, heading back to our car, I spotted something shiny on the ground.&nbsp; Yes, it was my missing earring.&nbsp; Serendipity!</div> <div class="p2"> <br /></div> <div class="p1"> Last week, I noticed early in the work day that one of my beloved earrings was again missing.&nbsp; I had people all
