I drove and caved into the unfathomable notion that I could text while driving too. Now for the average person, that's toying with danger. For anyone who knows me and my driving skills, that's like lighting a match in room full of gas. It's going to blow in your face and its not going to pretty. Thankfully I DID avoid creaming the car in front of me but it was close--really close --and by the single digit consideration I got from the driver he saw what I was doing and didnt like it one bit. As a greeting card designer... you'd think this would not illicit sweaty palms, panic or cold sweats. Ordinarily you'd be right. But you see this year... I fell a little behind. OKAY! I fell alot behind and didn't get to my own cards until super duper late. And because I was operating on design fumes this year, my cards are not only not overly inspiring in the design department, I sorta also forgot to put a very merry of any kind on them.

Oh yeah. In my design genius, I created a holiday card featuring a rather nice shot of my brood taken this summer with a lovely little watercolor treatment to match but forgot the really important part of the Christmas Card... the part about Christmas.

So dear reader if you happen to find, in your mailbox, a lovely picture of an oddly matched but not unattractive family of four at the beach minus a warm holiday hello. Aside from the fact that, I always feel like I am still stuffed from thanksgiving, lo and behold suddenly my days are supposed to be merry AND bright. Seriously. Wasn't Thanksgiving like yesterday? And just in case I am not quite one black Friday away from shopping overload it's also happens to be both my sons and my nephews birthdays. So it’s not only crazy, it ridiculously expensive. And just in case your wondering... nope we didnt even space all that shopping goodness out. The birthdays fall just days before and days after Christmas. Throw in a blooming little design business with last minute wedding and holiday orders ( all while prepping for a 10 hr road trip over the hills and thru the woods to Grandmas house) and by mid December I'm so broke, tired and foggy, a major meltdown of epic proportions is only a roll of forgotten wrapping paper away.

Or in this years case. I have had a ton of fun trying some new crafts so I thought I'd talk about a few of them here and maybe give you some fun Christmas DIY inspiration at the same time.

1. Making Your Own Garland

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

If you live near evergreen trees of any kind, you can make beautiful garland that looks super expensive but is FREE. Love that word. This is the first year I've tried making my own garland and I was really surprised at how easy it is - time consuming, but easy. It's also a lot of fun and can be a great family activity to do with the kids.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures of the process, but there are a lot of good tutorials out there, like this one from <a href="; target="_blank">Lily White Designs.

2. Frosting Your Own Garland

So now that you've made your own garland, you can make it look quite festive by frosting it, to make it appear as if it's been dusted by freshly fallen snow. This one I did manage to capture pictures of, and it's super simple. Make sure you do this in a well ventilated area. Hang the garland up so you'll have your hands free to work.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

Simply mix 1 cup of white flour or corn starch with a tablespoon or two of glitter.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

Next, spray parts of your garland with clear spray paint and then dust on the glitter mixture. It's that simple and it's super pretty.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

After hanging the garland, I decorated it with ornaments and I'm really happy with how it came out!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

3. Make Your Own Wreath

So, there are tons of ways that you can make your own wreath. You can even use your own evergreen cuttings if you have a foam or wire wreath form. For these wreaths, I cheated because I started with finished wreaths - a grapevine one and a regular artificial evergreen one.

For the grapevine wreath, I used some of the evergreen cuttings I had for the garland. I simply created a little spray using wire to secure the pieces together. Then, I wired the spray to the wreath and finished it off with a bow.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

For the evergreen wreath, I wrapped it in ribbon and then added some clip-on pieces I found in the Christmas section as well as some ornaments. I finished it off with a huge red bow and voila - done!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

4. Create a Swag for Above Windows or Doors

Again, using the evergreen cuttings that I had for the garland, I created a swag. I simply wired the pieces together with the needles facing different directions. Then, I added a few pine cones using fishing line. I dressed it up using ribbon and over-sized ornaments.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

5. Jar Snow Globes

Finally, you can make fun snow globes just using recycled jars and small figurines or trees like I used here. I didn't add water, but you can. Also, adding mineral oil is the best way to get the glitter or snow to fall slowly and beautifully. Mine are empty, but they still have the same sort of look and they're part of my little Christmas tree village.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

I just super glued the trees to the lid and sprayed some clear spray paint inside the jar before adding glitter. Then, I closed the jar and hot-glued some ribbon to hide the lid.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="314" src="; width="320" />

I hope you enjoyed these fun projects! Then I saw some on Facebook and thought they were really cute, so I decided to create some for my daughter and her little friends to use while they waited for the bus on cold mornings. I love these, and they're perfect stocking stuffers for kids or small gifts for co-workers, mail carriers, etc.

What You'll Need:

1 Small Square of Felt for Each Warmer (you can use any size you want; mine were about 4 inches by 4 inches).

2/3 Cup Uncooked Rice - not the instant kind. I've read that you can also use beans and corn kernels.

Needle and Thread

Ribbon (if you want to pretty these up a bit).

Essential Oils (optional - these are just to make them smell yummy).

How to Make Them:

As you can see in the picture (sorry for the poor pic quality), I started out by just sewing some little hearts to my ribbon to jazz it up a bit.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

Next, you're going to fold your felt square in half. If you've chosen to add ribbon, place it on top of the felt square and fold the end over so that it will tuck into your felt.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

To sew the felt, I just used a simple blanket stitch and started on one end.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

You will sew the two sides all the way around, making sure the stitches are close enough together to keep any rice from falling out once the hand warmer is finished.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="; width="320" />

Now you're going to add the rice to the hand warmer. I filled mine about 3/4 of the way and it took about 1/3 a cup of uncooked rice but it will take more or less depending upon how large your hand warmer is. If you're going to use essential oils, now is the time to put 1-2 drops inside! Once you've filled the warmer with rice, go ahead and stitch up the remaining side.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="239" />

Voila! You have neat little hand warmers that are great on cold mornings. Just pop them in the microwave and heat them for 30 seconds to 1 minute (be careful - they can come out pretty hot at first) and they'll stay warm for quite a while. These stayed nice and warm for about 20 minutes before needing a re-heat.

These are not just great for keeping hands warm; they're perfect for bumps, bruises and aches. A friend told me she made them for her father who suffered with arthritis because they eased the stiffness and pain. There you go - couldn't be easier! Have fun making your own hand warmers. My fiance and I have recently been entrusted with the care of two little ones, a boy age 4 and a girl age 3. We received these little angels a bit unexpectedly and as you can imagine, it was quite an adjustment. Although my 7 and 9 year old have been very helpful, I have forgotten just how much work the little, little ones can be!

That said, I hope everyone is having a fantastic time decorating, holiday shopping, and making Santa lists. This is my FAVORITE time of year (not favorite weather, but what is Christmas without that freezing wind that threatens to rip the skin right off your bones?)...in fact, my sister says that during the holidays, the 'elf' comes out in me. It's true...I have the Christmas spirit.

One of my favorite family traditions is ornament gifts. Each year, the kids get a special ornament from Mom and Dad, and Mom and Dad give each other a special ornament as well. Aside from that, if I see a unique ornament, I HAVE to snatch it up. I have a bit of an unnatural obsession with ornaments, especially if they are different than the typical Christmas ornament. I thought it would be fun to show you some of the ones I've collected over the years.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 354px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548942217200590370" border="0" />
Just after Hurricane Katrina, a couple in Key Largo sent my family a Christmas 'love' package, and this ornament was in the box. I was in love with it immediately and it has been on my tree every year since.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 213px; height: 400px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548942424129511810" border="0" /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" />
I have a bit of a thing for peacocks, and I saw this lady online and HAD to have her.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 357px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548942649751932882" border="0" />
Another peacock that I couldn't resist.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 304px; height: 400px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548942870764745506" border="0" />
I saw this ship ornament at a local boutique store and we made eye contact...it was love at first sight.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 277px; height: 400px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548943158420430114" border="0" />
This little Santa was at Michael's when I was shopping for crafts. It was so glittery; it beckoned to me from across the store. Look at Santa's sweet little face!

I LOVE Christmas ornaments! And here is how they all look on my tree, complete with the TRILLION-feet paper chain the kids and I made last year:

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="; alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5548944750022661362" border="0" />So, what does your tree look like? We're about there again, except we're in the middle of a record week for warm temps.

(Thanks for the weather update, Lid, now we resume blogging.)

I am trying to keep a family history blog since I joined Ancestrydotcom, so that takes up time that I could use here, instead, writing about ... nothing, as I used to in the good old days.

So I'm jumping back in with a meme which you answer with a song that fits the description. I'll do five today and then take it up again. Feel free to leave your own choices in the comments!

Day 1: "A song from childhood" I'll go with: "Keep on Dancin'," by the Gentrys. I still love the percussion and the fake ending. Love these images from the 60s and 70s, too.

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="344" src="; width="459">

Day 2: "A song that reminds of your ex boy/girlfriend"
The last ex-boyfriend I had was 1981, so ...
the song from the vault would be "Blue Morning, Blue Day," by Foreigner. Here we are at our senior prom. Years later, I realized I was dating a Dave Coulier doppleganger. This boy has passed way, rest in peace.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="; width="272" />

Day 3: "A song that reminds you of your parents" "Let Your Love Flow" My mom dearly loved this song when it was popular, which made me kind of not like it, because when you're a teenager, it's wEiRd when your parents like what is popular. (No worries; I have been repaid. 3X.)

<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="; width="480">

Day 4: "A song that calms you down" "Summer Breeze," by Seals and Crofts. In fact, Fleetwood Mac could've named their current concert series, "Never Gonna Phone It In."

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="320" width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="127" width="200" />
This iconic album cover, or in my case, 8 track tape cover, is tattooed on my brain. In 1978, when I was 16, Indiana sustained the mother of all blizzards. We were trapped in our houses for a couple of weeks, out of school for about 3 weeks. I've never seen anything like it since. I spent many hours in our tiny den, listening to Rumours over and over. And over. I loved that album and subsequent songs from Stevie Nicks' solo career.

FM reunited with Christine McVie and came to Indy on this tour, but we missed out on the tickets. So we purchased some for Louisville and went to the concert February 17.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="150" />
Guess what? As if a nostalgic nod to my blizzard memories, a big snowstorm hit Louisville and nearly shut down the town. We were worried the concert might be canceled. We arrived the night before, and the town was a ghost town--restaurants closed, downtown streets had no traffic. It was eerie.

But, as they say, "On With the Show."

I don't know if I ever need to attend another concert by another entertainer. I can't think who else I'd like to see as much, certainly not more. Christine McVie sounded like magic. Lindsey Buckingham is a guitar wizard. Mick Fleetwood is ... crazy good. The other band members, the back up singers, the stage show--all amazing. Which is why I look giddy here. I don't have a "bucket list," but if I did, I could've been crossing off one hope-to-do-before-I-die item because of this concert. I mentioned they've been doing this for 40+ years, and I'm sure they're tired of the same old catalog of songs, but thankfully, they do not exhibit any signs of boredom on stage. They do not disappoint!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="165" />

I just love Stevie Nicks. Still wearing velvet, boots, gossamer shawls, still twirling with open arms and bowing deep with one foot forward. Still the Gypsy, still the poet in our hearts. It's a very classic black jersey knit shirt dress-wrap-style, long skirt, 3/4 sleeves. I wear black tights and black boots under it. Very funeral appropriate, except the neckline is a tad too revealing without a pin.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="320" width="279" />I found a pin, but getting it situated without puckering and pulling the dress was arduous.

I flashed back to my teenage years when my mom would help me pin the necklines or straps out of the way. Even then with her help, it took a while to get it just right. We (or I should say "she") would work and work on it to make it the least noticeable as possible. It was a labor of Mom love.

I expect that I'll always remember little moments like that; at least I hope I do, and I hope my children have their own incidental memories for their middle years and beyond.

Mom is beyond helping me with anything now; I do all of the helping. Sometimes that makes me want to weep. Not because it's such hard work but because it's the necessity, the practical reality. And that's sad. I want her to be who she used to be.

Or do I?

You'll notice the second word of my title: needling. I meant that word to represent all of the times I struggled with my mom emotionally. She was pretty controlling and opinionated, determined to get her way, especially when it came to me and my appearance. My appearance was singularly important to her because her own was to her, and I was an extension of her.

When other mothers were trying to tone down their daughters, mine was trying to make me more attractive to the opposite sex.

It was weird.

First of all, it was like having a stage mom, but I was no starlet. Just average. I did not garner compliments every time I left the house like she always had growing up. To this day, she receives compliments when we're out, and she eats it up. I cringe. She had no career or anything besides her good looks and clean house on which to base her significance-very much a Mrs. Cleaver without the pearls. And so she passed her priorities on to me, only I resented them, most often. Occasionally it was ok with me because that meant I got new clothes, etc.

But I could not walk across the room without her telling me to straighten my shoulders. If I dropped something and picked it up, I had to bend my knees a certain way. If I carried a sweater or coat, it had to be draped across my arm, no bunching allowed. The rules were many, and she was like a giant eye, ever-watching.

One of the most irritating things she did was barge in on me in the bathroom. She had no idea we were two separate entities, no longer tied by the umbilical cord, even when I was older. If I locked the door, she tried to get in and ridiculed me for locking it. I wasn't doing anything sketchy, just PEEING, which I was not allowed to say, by the way.

This week I was in her bathroom, and in a split second, I had the most negative, ugly thought: "If she dares barge in here, I'm giving her what-for." It was like I was already angry, and she had not done a thing!

She cannot read her own mail now because she can't understand the difference between junk and legit mail. Plus she can't comprehend what she reads. So yesterday I came in with her mail, junk sorted. I was on my way to the trash when she stopped me: "What is that?"

"It's junk mail."
"Well, here, let me see it."
"OK."

Ten minutes later: "I guess this is all junk mail. I should've let you take it when you were on your way with it." And she tossed it on the floor beside her chair.

I was STEAMING. What's with the control??

And then I thought, "She's 89 and very weak. She does not have much control over anything in her life. Can you not let her pretend to read her stupid mail without getting upset?! GROW UP."

What is my problem? I've got issues. Being around her is causing me to face buried resentment alongside growing compassion.

So often I waffle between deep sadness, pity and compassion and then irritation when the more frustrating parts of who she was arise.

Is she a child or an adult? It fluctuates by the minute.

I am working on this internally and working on it externally by my responses.

Some mothers never noticed their daughters were around. Mine lived through me. Both methods breed contempt. But when she's needling, I'll try to remember the pins. Because they are both a part of who she was and is, and she is my mother.

2015/02/pins-and-needling.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (2nd Cup of Coffee)13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25201050.post-5324812150063608097Sat, 17 Jan 2015 00:52:00 +00002015-01-16T19:54:19.966-05:00The One About "Mark Twain is My Cousin" Wait-What??
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="286" width="320" />

Please follow this link to my other blog to <a href=" Mark Twain: -- about finding out that I'm ... kin.2015/01/the-one-about-mark-twain-is-my-cousin.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (2nd Cup of Coffee)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25201050.post-1273315706210332432Fri, 16 Jan 2015 00:17:00 +00002015-01-15T19:18:50.154-05:00Thanks, Grandma and Grandpa. It's a Record. For Slowness.<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="150" />I'm like most of you, I think. The decorations come down pretty quickly. But not this year. With the fire and the illnesses, it had to wait.

I thought the stale reminders would drive me crazy, but I was wrong. Today as I tucked away little mementos of this year, I was sad. And here's where I demonstrate the glass half-empty outlook I carry with me at all times.

My sweetheart was 23 months at Christmas. She was excited about everything, if not completely cognizant why. She loved "Jingle Bells" and would take off galloping around the family room and generally dance and walk on her toes whenever it would come on. And it wasn't enough to spring to animation by herself--whoever was near got pulled into the action like Courteney Cox in that Springsteen video. I've never galloped so much since 1967, kindergarten gym time.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="150" />
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="150" />

I baked cookies with her mom and her. Here she is putting on sprinkles. Tilting your head helps you pick up those tiny candies with hands that are not used to the demands of fine motor skills.

She loved opening presents and had so many from me that I had to parcel them out during December so that she wasn't buried in them Christmas Eve. I don't want to set a precedent for this type of consumerism. I'm not sure what happened to me emotionally this year. I ended up putting several away for her upcoming birthday. I never knew the tension of restraint until I had a granddaughter and entered Toys R Us at Christmastime. Good grief, Charlie Brown.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="150" />

And here is my mom, who turned 89 in December. She was so ill at our house on Christmas Eve that I could not get a picture of her where she doesn't look like she's channeling Mrs. Gummidge in David Copperfield. I'm happy to say she's feeling better now, but the reality is, she is declining, month by month, week by week. Her quality of life is not good right now. The one bright spot in her life is Josie, and I'm not exaggerating when I say that. So I'm not sure about next Christmas with Mom. It breaks my heart.

Wow, I certainly didn't mean to be so melancholy, but this is pretty much how it is right now, in my head and heart. At the beginning of December, I was super excited about life--challenging goals, fulfilling days spent caring for granddaughter and mom, good time with husband and kids, etc. It just came to a screeching halt around Christmas and New Year's Eve, of course (fire). It will get better. It has to.

After all, Celebrity Apprentice is back on, right?

2015/01/christmas-is-officially-over-this-year.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (2nd Cup of Coffee)5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25201050.post-7240819258537509955Sat, 10 Jan 2015 16:02:00 +00002015-01-10T11:02:50.464-05:00Currently ... A Writing Prompt
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="320" width="201" />
1. Thinking: It doesn't bode well for my goal of writing more in 2015 if I have to use a prompt.

2. Enjoying: This will overlap with listening, but currently enjoying Styx "Come Sail Away." Good to hear on a Saturday with temps at 0* while you're cleaning house.

3. Feeling: Just a little blue, which is typical for me when I'm trapped on the frozen tundra. How many days until spring?

4. Wearing: Not a Pinterest creation, for sure. Gray yoga pants and black sweatshirt. Perhaps if I wore some color today, it might affect me for the positive? Nah.

5. Needing: Nothing. I need nothing, really, which is quite remarkable and humbling.

6. Wanting: Ah, now that's a different story. I want my eyes to clear up. I think I'm having a reaction to my sinus infection. I've posted about it here before. I want to get all of my Christmas decorations put away today. I've been ill and haven't tackled it.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="163" />

What?? The Heck??

7. Listening: "Boogie Oogie Oogie," Taste of Honey, from a time in my life when all I had to worry about was homework, hair, and boys.

8. Making: I'm working on a gargantuan afghan I started last year. This is a dis-as-ter. My rows are off; I just can't seem to learn how to count. The colors slightly match my bedroom. I chose ocean colors because I was missing the ocean, and I thought when I wrapped up in it in winter, I'd be reminded of the beach. I think I was losing it. But now what do you do? Scrap the whole thing? This thing is huge. It covers my queen sized bed.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="200" width="150" />

9. Eating: Nothing yet today. I did take my vitamins.

10: Drinking: So proud to say I've got my water bottle right here with me. Drinking more water is another goal for this year. Even if I drink one bottle per day, that's more than 0 ounces per day. I literally forget to drink. I don't even think of it during a meal or while eating food that screams for it. George will say, "How can you stand not to drink something with (whatever food)?" I don't know the answer to that. Even when I was little, my mother had to force me to take breaks from playing to go to the bathroom and to drink. It's an unfortunate gift that I have.

What are you currently up to?2015/01/currently-writing-prompt.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (2nd Cup of Coffee)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25201050.post-6513517287710442245Tue, 06 Jan 2015 19:41:00 +00002015-01-06T14:41:29.473-05:00Dowager Countess of GranthamEating OutRestaurantsViolet CrawleyHere's My Card!Is this a new thing?

My family went out to eat in a big chain restaurant similar to Olive Garden or Applebees. The server was friendly, courteous and eager to offer suggestions about the menu. She was an uber-server.

At the end of the meal, the server asked, "Do you eat here often?" Only one said yes. The server then said, "Here's my card. Please ask for me when you return," and she handed this card to my daughter:

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="170" width="320" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="170" width="320" />

If you know my family, you will understand that once she was out of earshot, this was wildly funny to everyone at the table.

Do you think management knows she's doing this? I'm mainly avoiding obvious sources, but I've cut out sugary yogurt, too. No Starbucks (I indulge only during the Christmas season), no Peanut M&Ms (my main weakness), no nothing.

Ohmygoodness. Cravings. MAJOR cravings. In the middle of a head cold, too.

It hits me especially in the afternoons and lasts until bedtime.

I get the urge; I re-direct my thinking.

I change what I'm doing.

I eat something healthy, like an apple or grapes. NOT THE SAME.

This is the 5th day, and I actually feel grumpy mean tonight. I feel restless, edgy.

So I Googled, "When do sugar cravings stop?" knowing I'd land on articles and discussions by super humans who have actually succeeded at this. Don't you know, most articles had a great big picture of some kind of sweets on the header. GIANT cookies! WHAT?! I scrolled down like I was avoiding porn.

The consensus is: the first week is horrible. By two to two and half weeks, the cravings should subside a great deal.

I honestly don't know if I can last that long if the cravings don't subside a bit. I've given up coffee for Lent before. That's what that pic above is about. I don't remember it being this AnNoYiNg.

Has anyone out there tried this? My daughter and granddaughter had a violent flu. On New Years Eve, their outbuilding which housed their business burned to the ground. Then I got sick. It has been a mash up that calls to mind a Carol Burnett parody of a tragic 1940s movie: over the top drama, disasters rapidly occurring--but no laughs.

Tomorrow, we begin anew.

I'm hoping the substantial snow we are forecast will cover the debris of the outbuilding. I'm hoping it looks and feels like a comforting blanket.

I do wish for a bright white slate.

Here are the {gulp} goals I'm working on for 2015. I understand they're not as tight as they should be, but I'm mostly looking for improvement, unless I mention a measurable value.

• I've purchased a journal in which I'll write as I read my devotional each day: <a href=" Calling. I still maintain that is a horrible title which brings to mind "Ding Dong, Avon calling!" or old timey cold-call evangelists. I've read about the <a href=" the author using first-person perspective when speaking as The Lord of the Universe, but I find nothing that doesn't spring completely from scripture. It just doesn't cause me concern. And since most days' writings are devoted to saying, "Simmer down, Martha!" it's just what I need.

• I'm drinking at least 24oz of water daily, which is an improvement over 0 ounces.

• I'm running at least 750 miles this year.

• I'm working on a book list I found on Pointiest. Currently I'm reading/listening to David Copperfield.

• I'm staying on my <a href=" and gluten free diet because my eczema and psoriasis are way better than last year at this time. I highly recommend.

• I'll keep scanning old photos and working on ancestry. Soon I'll receive the results of my DNA test.

• I'll to keep writing on my blogs. One blog is about <a href=" in the context of being a grandma; one is about <a href=" history, and then there's my first-born, this blog, which I started in 2006.

• Less sugar, as in no sugar this month, at least. The most difficult! Since January 1, that has been my biggest personal challenge. I think about it all the time and am grumpy. We can’t talk about how cool we think the show is without talking about the Ryan Reynolds movie. Like, that one definitely crawled through CGI uniforms so this one could fly. We get to the bottom of where we think this show is taking Gunn’s DCU, since the tone is so different from Superman and Peacemaker. (No Spoilae, but we found a very interesting link between all three!) We try to answer what we think they got right in the adaptation from the Green Lantern comics to the show so far. Which then got us to dreaming about what we WANT them to put in the show! (We need Ch’p the squirrel lantern asap!) We’re jumping back into the wild world of Westeros to chat about House of the Dragon season three. You’ll notice Mike is cool and calm recalling things from the show, but Aisha and Frantz had to catch up from season one(!). So, after running through three seasons of GoT:HotD in four days we got all kinds of fever dream takes on deck. From how certain houses…’keep it in the family’ to what it means to have Black and Brown people so much more present throughout the fabric of this high fantasy. Aisha names the real-life political parallels she saw while binging and Mike highlights a potential sneak diss aimed at George RR Martin in the show. From the many twists, turns, scandals, and betrayals to the fact that Targaryans have white hair and Black names - we’re swinging for the fences here. How is HBO keeping up with the dragon VFX budget in this economy? Why are Aemon and Daemon the exact same person? What the heck happened to Rhena’s hair and why didn’t someone get her a loctician asap? The trio just had to mic up so we could chop it up about X-Men ‘97 Season Two! The anticipation’s been building and it’s finally back and the hype train is leaving the station. We get into the fly outfits and character designs with a light dive on the many deep cut references. We explore why the pacing of the show felt different this time around. Can’t talk about this show without getting into a conversation about the dismissal of the original showrunner and head writer Beau DeMayo, so we get into that too. Had to show love for the continuing and long overdue glow ups for Jubilee and Cyclops. We’ve been waiting for that. From the fight choreography giving ‘Fantastic Hands And Where To Catch Them’ and a bunch of cool cameos, this season delivered enough for us to talk for hours. Plus, the big questions: why does this season feel like we're speed running story arcs, smashing them all together? Is the creative team rushing towards potentially new original stories? You know it wouldn’t be us if we didn’t ask why Bishop, Forge, and Storm’s characters felt sidelined this season. We’re back in the saddle with actor, writer, director, producer—and Aisha’s actual brother—Rafael Jordan of Village Park Productions! Rafael may be the alternate-universe Wonder Man himself, so we had to bring him in to unpack Marvel’s new series, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s take on Simon Williams, and why this might be the most painfully accurate portrayal of the working-actor experience ever put inside the MCU. 🦸🏾‍♂️🎭 We’re getting into Wonder Man’s comic-book origins, the show’s grounded approach to superpowers, Hollywood anxiety, disastrous auditions, self-tape nightmares, Trevor Slattery’s return, and whether signing an MCU contract is an actor’s dream—or a career trap. Rafael also tells us about the audition where he transformed a hotel room into a full-blown war zone, complete with homemade Foley, fake gunfire and a paperclip grenade. Yes, he really did all that. 😂💥 The first half is spoiler-free, but once the warning drops, all bets are off! Tune in, laugh with us and let us know: Is Wonder Man one of Marvel’s best shows yet—and which Marvel or DC character should Rafael play? 👀 2Nerds and an Actor is hosted by Aisha Jordan and Frantz Jerome, produced by the hosts alongside Desta Wondirad, and brought to you in partnership with Wondir Studios.
