No guides, no crammed backpack with gear and nibbles etc., just my camera and me having a quiet walk. Casual Birding as fellow 10000birds writer Faraaz Abdool calls it. A few brown ducks kept circling low before eventually coming to rest in a dead tree on the edge of the lake just in front of me. Then a couple of Wattled Jacanas appeared among the floating vegetation, and for a while the ducks were forgotten. I have watched Wattled Jacanas in Trinidad, Panama, Costa Rica and a few other places along the way, and I have always thought they were rather smartly dressed birds. The rich chestnut back, black head and breast, yellow bill and bright red wattle make for quite a combination. There is a lot of colour going on, but somehow they manage to pull it off. They always look rather chic, in my opinion Then you look at the feet. There is nothing particularly dainty about those. The toes are extraordinarily long and seem to head off in every direction. On a bird that otherwise looks so neatly put together, they can appear almost comically oversized. But watch a jacana moving through a patch of lilies and those enormous feet begin to make a lot more sense. Those long toes spread the bird’s weight across the lilies and other floating vegetation. One foot goes down, the toes spread across the leaves and stems, and then the next follows. I only recently came across the name lily-trotter for jacanas, and I rather like it. I have watched them picking their way through patches of lilies for years without knowing there was such an appropriate name for what they were doing. Most of the Wattled Jacana’s colours are pretty obvious. There is no hiding that red wattle or yellow bill, and the chestnut and black can be seen from some distance away. But there is another colour that it keeps largely hidden. You have to wait for it to open its wings. Suddenly there is a flash of yellow. The flight feathers are a striking yellow-green, something you would hardly suspect when the bird is wandering around with its wings folded. Those wings also hide something considerably less decorative. Jacanas have a sharp spur at the bend of each wing, which can be used when fighting with one another. I have seen plenty of jacanas chasing each other over the years, although I can’t say that I have ever actually seen those spurs put to use. Perhaps that is just as well. For such a well-dressed bird, they are quite well armed. There was another reason the jacanas at Gatun Lake had caught my attention. One of them had a chick. And with Wattled Jacanas, seeing an adult looking after a chick tells you something about which parent you are probably watching. Dad. Wattled Jacanas have a rather unusual family arrangement. The female is larger than the male and may have several males within her territory. The males incubate the eggs and then take responsibility for the chicks once they hatch. So while the female has the larger territory to look after and defend, each male gets on with raising his family. There is one bit of jacana behaviour I would particularly like to see. When his chicks are threatened, the male can gather them beneath his wings and carry them away to safety. I haven’t seen it yet, but I will certainly be watching the next time I find a male with small chicks. Eventually my attention returned to the ducks in the dead tree and the Jacanas went their merry way.]]> A few days ago I was birding along Gatun Lake in the Gamboa area of Panama. I wrote that a little over five years ago in my review of his second book about bird migration, A World on the Wing, and if anything Weidensaul’s optimism seems to have gotten wider and deeper, a shining if quixotic beacon in an often dark world. The Return of the Oystercatcher: Saving Birds to Save the Planet is all about the actions people–farmers, ranchers, estate owners, government employees, graduate students, scientists, some representing organizations, all committed individuals–are engaged in to save birds and, by extension, mammals, insects, plants, huge tracts of land all over the world. The birds range from waterfowl to seabirds to shorebirds to raptors to sage-grouse to songbirds (literally, there are nightingales here). The places Weidensaul visits range from a small town in Colorado that hosts a Mountain Plover festival to the Hawaiian island of Kaua’i where Laysan Albatrosses nest in residents’ backyards to the Knepp Castle Estate in Great Britain, the center of a successful ‘rewilding’ project, to the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria, home to Egyptian Vultures, to Massachusetts beaches, to massive boreal forests in the Canadian Northwest territories, now under the stewardship of First Nations. It’s grand and personal in scope, exceptionally readable and quietly educational, a book I think all 10,000 Birds readers will want to take in. One of the few caveats I have with The Return of the Oystercatcher is the title. I originally thought it was about American Oystercatchers, a species I adore and love photographing. It is, as I indicate above, much broader and more ambitious in scope, though American Oystercatchers are covered in the shorebird chapter, a reminder to me of just how close I came to having no large, goofy birds to enjoy every summer. I guess the title “The Return of the Oystercatcher, Piping Plover, Mountain Plover, Bald Eagle, Snow Goose, Atlantic Puffin, Egyptian Vulture, Cinereous Vulture, White Stork, and a Lot of Other Species, Including Some Mammals” would be a little awkward. My other caveat is the introductory chapter, “Rebound,” an account of how we, the people, decimated species of abundance with guns, development, and no understanding of consequences, a necessary history but one I feel I’ve read too many times this year (this is a “book reviewer’s complaint” which probably doesn’t apply to most readers). The chapter also recounts what is probably the United States’ most successful story, the ‘rebound’ of waterfowl–ducks in the prairie pothole region, Canada Geese all over, Snow Geese in eastern North America–through legislative provisions discouraging farmers in the northern Great Plains from converting wetlands to farmland, a transnational treaty encouraging conservation partnerships amongst “state, provincial, federal, local, and tribal governments, along with conservation NGO’s, businesses, and private individuals” (p. 13), and with the support of waterfowls’ most enthusiastic and powerful fans (also the most controversial in the birding world), duck hunters and the Ducks Unlimited organization. The chapter lays out principles of success that Weidensaul will return to throughout: focus on habitat conservation, knowledge of migration routes on a yearly and daily basis, organizational partnerships, and, most importantly, convincing stakeholders to be on the side of the birds. North American readers will hopefully be familiar with some of the conservation stories Weidensaul relates. The fight of the beaches, the clashes between Piping Plover monitors and summer beach goers, particularly drivers of SUVs, are familiar to those of us who live on the Eastern seaboard. Weidensaul focuses on the struggles that took place on Massachusetts beaches, which he says “was then [1986] and now the heart of the piping plover story” (p. 226), but I can attest that residents of Southampton on Eastern Long Island also shouted, “Tastes like chicken!” to plover monitors and protective birders as recently as last year. Steve Kress’s work bringing back Atlantic Puffins to Eastern Egg Rock is probably even more well-known. Weidensaul visits the Rock with Kress, where the Common Terns give him a ‘warm’ welcome, and give us an idea of the primitive conditions under which the five young women live while monitoring the Puffins and Terns, counting eggs, fending off predators that haven’t already been killed. I’ve read about Kress, but I didn’t know that it was he who pioneered the technique called “social attraction,” the use of decoys and sound broadcasts to lure Puffins back to Maine. Like the young conservationists Weidensaul talks to at one point, I too thought that this technique was always there. On the other side of the continent, the work of writer and photographer Hob Osterlund has educated many of us about the M?l?, the Laysan Alabatrosses who nest in the backyards of the residents of suburban Princeville, Kaua’i. Osterlund was a resource for Weidensaul, who traveled to Kaua’i to talk to biologist André Raine about his successful work bringing back two of Hawaii’s three endangered seabird species–Newell’s Shearwater and Hawaiian Petrel–using social attraction, exclusion fences, and working with the electrical company to install ‘visual flight diverters’ on utility wires. It’s good to read about conservation success on the Hawaiian Islands for once. More unfamiliar, I think, are the stories of the Colorado ranches that host Mountain Plovers and biodiverse short-grass prairie fields of abundance, and the descriptions of how tracts of sagebrush steppe at the intersection of Oregon and Idaho are being remade into habit for Greater Sage-Grouse by axing down Juniper Trees. But Weidensaul smartly structures the book so we read about these North American stories after we encounter conservation stories that follow very different paths–the mixed success halting the shooting of hawks in Great Britain and the Rewilding movement in Great Britain, Romania, and Bulgaria. The first story is simply depressing, focusing on the failure to stop Brits in a certain section of England from shooting Hen Harriers, a species in steep decline in England. It’s a tale rooted in centuries of patrician custom and entitlement, the shooting of the Hen Harriers to protect the driven Red Grouse hunt despite the best efforts of...]]> Scott Weidensaul seems to have optimism in his DNA. The project connects species, regional records, source provenance, and rights-cleared media while avoiding interpretation of occurrence records as abundance. I started building a website about Korean birds because I thought the difficult part would be the data. That turned out to be only partly true. South Korea has a national bird list, public biodiversity records, maps, institutional databases, and a great deal of bird photography. International databases add still more. From a distance, the ingredients look abundant. I assumed the job was mostly technical: match names, connect records, build a search interface, and make the result usable in English. Then I tried to put a photograph next to every bird. Anyone who has searched for a bird online knows the paradox. Type a species name into an image search, and you can drown in photographs. Ask a slightly different question—Which of these photographs can I actually republish, with a clear source, a clear license, and enough evidence that it shows the exact taxon I am claiming it shows?—and the ocean becomes a puddle. At one point I found myself considering a choice that felt absurd: use an attractive photograph whose reuse or identification trail was not solid enough, or use an uglier image—even a carcass or historical specimen-type image—that I could actually defend. The second option began to look more honest. That small problem changed how I thought about the whole project. EXISTING IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING FINDABLE The site I eventually built is called KoreAves. It is an English-first evidence atlas for the birds on South Korea’s 2025 national list, 617 taxa in all. I did not set out to create a new authority on Korean birds. Korea already has authorities and source datasets. The problem I kept encountering was the distance between those sources and an English-speaking birder who simply wants to answer a normal question. What is this bird called in the Korean national list? Has it been recorded in this part of the country? Where did that record come from? Is the name in one database the same taxonomic concept used in another? Is the photograph attached to the species page actually reusable? Can I follow the claim back to something more substantial than another page repeating it? The answers often existed. They just did not necessarily exist in the same place, in the same language, under the same taxonomy, or with the same assumptions. This is a different kind of data gap. It is not a gap in observation. It is a gap in travel. Birds cross borders without caring about database schemas. Bird information is less fortunate. TAXONOMY IS WHERE APPARENTLY SIMPLE QUESTIONS STOP BEING SIMPLE A birder searching for a species does not usually want a lecture on database normalization. I did not want one either. But once I started connecting Korean records with international sources, names became unavoidable. A scientific name is not always a permanent ID. Names move, species are split or lumped, subspecies are promoted or demoted, and two sources can use the same-looking label while meaning slightly different things. That matters because a beautiful interface can hide a bad join. If I connect a regional record to the wrong taxon, the map may still render perfectly. The page may load instantly. The typography may be excellent. It will simply be wrong in a very polished way. So the project became increasingly conservative. A record is not abundance. The absence of a public record is not proof that a bird is absent. A regional match is not evidence that two species occurred together. When a taxonomic connection is uncertain, uncertainty is better than a confident shortcut. This sounds obvious when written down. It is surprisingly easy to violate when building software. PHOTOGRAPHS TAUGHT THE SAME LESSON MORE BRUTALLY Images made the abstract problem visible. For each candidate photograph I wanted to know at least four things: who made it, where the original record lived, what the license actually allowed, and whether the bird in the image matched the taxon being represented. Sometimes all four were easy. Wikimedia Commons and other open repositories can be excellent when the provenance chain is intact. Sometimes a photo had a permissive-looking label on one page but led to a source page that required more checking. Sometimes the license was fine, but the taxonomic identification was too broad. Sometimes the photo was visually perfect and evidentially useless. The temptation, of course, is to say: nobody will notice. That is exactly the temptation an evidence project should resist. Birders are used to this instinct in the field. A distant shape does not become a rarity because you want it to be one. A call you almost recognize does not improve because the checklist would look better with another tick. Image provenance deserves the same discipline. There is also something mildly comic about spending hours searching the internet for a bird that is plainly not rare on the internet. The photo exists. Many photos exist. What may not exist is the specific combination of identity, permission, provenance, and resolution that lets you use one responsibly. This is why “there are lots of bird photos online” and “there are lots of bird photos available for a public reference project” are very different statements. THE MOST USEFUL FEATURE MAY BE THE BORING LINK While building KoreAves, I initially thought the visible features would be the important part: search, species pages, regional views, GIS, comparison tools. I still think those are useful. But I have become increasingly fond of the least glamorous part of the site: the source link. A source link lets the reader leave. That sounds like terrible product design. It is also the point. If a page says that a species has a record associated with a Korean region, the reader should be able to inspect where that claim came from....]]> By Jihun Oh Jihun is a Korean developer and the creator of KoreAves, an English-first evidence atlas for birds recorded in South Korea. I’d been a little intimidated by this category of birds. There are 49species in the US and Canada, which is a lot. Also, to the inexperienced eye they all look pretty much the same: dull, brown and featureless. I’d lumped them into the SSS category, Some Sort of Sparrow. Then I saw and heard the stunning Lark Sparrow and my interest was peaked. So I did the nerdiest of bird nerd things to do and took an online course from The Cornell Lab of Ornithology. I’m not sure if it was worth it but by that time it was too hot to go birding so what else could I do?  In Texas our sparrow population balloons in the fall and winter. By October I was seeing White Crowned Sparrows, White Throated Sparrows and Harris’ Sparrows in fields and woods near my house. I then took a trip down to the King Ranch in South Texas. I was lucky and got a great look at a Botteri Sparrow. There are few birds as drab and featureless as a Botteri Sparrow. It has no streaking on the breast or belly, no distinct malar stripes, no distinguishing facial markings and its pretty much brown on brown. The guide identified it for me and if I ever see it again (doubtful as its range is very restricted) I’m sure I still won’t recognize it. I have no pictures of this unspectacular bird however, I was also rewarded with my first siting of a Black Throated Sparrow. I saw several perched on a creosote bush just where Cornell had predicted they’d be. What a gorgeous bird. In January we had a rare snow event and I discovered that sparrows are much easier to see with a white background. I had several good looks at a Fox Sparrow as well as a Spotted Towhee. I also saw Vesper Sparrows on an abandoned golf course near my house as well as the very common Lincoln’s Sparrow. And I finally saw a Swamp Sparrow. According to Merlin I had been in its vicinity on more than one occasion but had never gotten eyes on it. I have also never seen a Le Conte’s Sparrow, not for lack of trying and a Grasshopper Sparrow has proven elusive. In fact, of the 49 sparrow species in North America, I think I’ve identified 20, but who’s counting? ]]> Last summer I decided to tackle the world of Sparrows. Then I read about the Black Paradise Flycatcher breeding in Jeju (see this profile), so I was glad to see the species again in early September. The male in particular is attractive even without the long tail feathers, which the birds have lost by now. At this time of the year, it seems much easier to see juvenile birds than adults. So you get many light-blue juvenile male Siberian Blue Robins, rather than the dark-blue adult males … … and similarly, it is easier to see light-blue juvenile Blue-and-white Flycatchers rather than the dark-blue adult males … … though I saw that one as well. The coastline outside of the Nanhui microforests has been freed of cordgrass, but rumor has it that this area will be used for land reclamation soon. So this may be the last chance to see the Black-faced Spoonbill here. It is listed as Vulnerable – on the positive side, with about 7,000 individuals, this is a much better situation than the 1988 estimate of only 288 birds. Note to photographers: if you disastrously overexpose some shots of Black-faced Spoonbills, you can just call them art. Or when arriving very early, sell the photo to Hallmark. There is just a tiny strip of reed left at the moment – where will the Reed Parrotbills go once that has been destroyed as well? The Asian Stubtail looks almost like a leaf warbler but apparently is a bush-warbler, and instead of hectically flying among leaves, it hops around on the ground. The near absence of a tail gives it a cute look, too. The Black-winged Cuckooshrike sometimes wonders about its name, as it is neither a cuckoo nor a shrike. It just looks a bit (but not much) like both, which was apparently reason enough to have this name imposed on the species. Consequently, whenever Brown Shrikes have a get-together at Nanhui, cuckooshrikes are not invited. That said, they do not invite Long-tailed Shrikes either, despite being related. In marketing, there is something called the decoy effect. It basically means offering three differently priced versions of the same product, with the most expensive one not really created to get big additional sales but rather to make the middle option more attractive and reasonable. Seeing the sequence of Little Curlew, Eurasian Whimbrel and Eurasian Curlew, I think the whimbrel is a good example for the middle option when contrasted with the exaggerated shape of the Eurasian Curlew (and let’s not even speak of the Far Eastern version). September also marks the return of thrushes. Some may even winter in Shanghai, such as White’s Thrush … … while others, such as this (female) Siberian Thrush, still have quite a distance to go. The male looks a bit less like the White’s Thrush. Hopefully these Yellow-breasted Buntings, which are listed as Critically Endangered, will make it through Guangdong without being eaten. The HBW: “Flocks roosting in reedbeds are flushed and then caught in mist-nets, cooked and sold as food (described as “sparrows” or “rice-birds”); this practice, previously restricted to small area of S China, has become more widespread”. Coastal Nanhui used to have a big hinterland of fields and small rivers and canals, which are now replaced by housing, factories, and even military facilities. So, the habitat for birds like Black-winged Stilt … … Chinese Pond Heron … … and Cattle Egret is shrinking. (for example, what to bring, how to prepare for the visit, etc.) We would highly recommend that guests bring their binoculars, lenses, and extra memory cards, as the place would present itself with ample opportunities to capture exotic species. The guests are advised to plan a stay of 2-4 days to explore the complete region and make the best of their stay. Do you have activities for non-birders? If so, please describe. There are many activities for non-birders, such as nature trails, village walks, picnics, learning to cook local cuisines with our chefs, etc. The gazebo offers a view of the stunning Himalayan landscape, and the participants can witness sunrise and spend quiet evenings there. But just before you pop from the hot steamroom into the goosebumpy hallway, it’s time to stop for a moment and be a finger-painting Picasso. Yes, for a minute let the blurry morning haze and the upcoming stresses of school or work melt down and fade away as you start streaking your fingers up and down the steamy glass. Crowds slowly gather at this stormy seashore and look over your shoulder as you calmly and quickly paint pretty pictures on your cliffside easel. Soon clouds part and the sun glimmers off the distant ocean waves as strangers stop walking their dogs, kids peek over from the ball diamond, and old folks hold hands and smile as you whip up masterpiece after masterpiece. Images pop up as they ooh and ahh — it’s a happy face, a heart, a house with smoke coming out the chimney, or a love letter waiting for the next person to have a shower. You know how your crinkly leg hairs all get a chance to relax, stretch out, and breathe a sigh of relief? Well, taking out your ponytail is like that times a million. All your hair unbends and finally points the other direction. Shivers shake down your spine as you bend your neck and shake your hair out. Yes, all the pressure just melts away and it feels like an instant scalp massage. Plus, if you tied your shaggy mane up when it was wet then it’s even better because somehow everything was twisted even tighter up in there. Taking your ponytail out is the getting comfy equivalent of putting on your PJs, taking your bra off at the end of the day, or twisting around all your sheets and blankets in the middle of the night till you get ’em jusssssssssst right. And don’t worry — if you’re inside the line, just go with a hook shot, buzzer beater, or big swooping alley-oop over to the glass fire extinguisher case hanging on the wall. Two points! Now, before you start firing, it’s important to really make sure you’ve got a size and weight that works. Crumpled printer paper and waxy, balled-up hamburger wraps are great. Flimsy granola bar wrappers and chewed up gum generally is not. If you try tossing those things you could find yourself missing the hoop and then casually glancing around to see who saw before sheepishly sharp-elbowing you way to the basket so you can scoop your own dirty rebound. No, the key to pulling it off is simple: Grab a ball that flies, aim your hands to the sky, and fire that garbage into the trash can nearby. AWESOME! Yes, when you toss on a brand new sweatshirt just smile and enjoy the smooth silky softness rubbing against your skin. There are no lint balls, fraying sleeves, or crinkled tags scratching at your neck. It’s just the cottony soft freshness of a brand new friend. Of course, we both know the washer and dryer will slowly murder our sweatshirts over time. That’s why if you’re like me you try and stretch out that cozy first wear feeling as long as possible. You keep wearing it and wearing it and wearing it and wearing it, all the while hoping nobody calls you out on the fact you don’t wash your clothes. But come on, it’s worth it. It’s worth the looks. It’s worth the stares. It’s worth the undershirts smeared with red lint. So go ahead! Toss on a pair of sweatpants, plop down on your cushy couch, and lay back in that sunny and relaxing world of AWESOME! Ready for more awesome?
