People in tsunami hazard zones — including low-lying coastal areas such as Fort Bragg, Mendocino, Albion and other shoreline communities — are asked to walk to higher ground or outside the hazard area at 11 a.m. as part of the exercise. Those outside tsunami zones do not need to evacuate but are encouraged to use the time to consider how they would respond to a major earthquake.

Officials emphasized that in a real tsunami, dangerous waves can continue for 24 to 48 hours after the first wave arrives. Residents should not return to coastal hazard areas until authorities say it is safe.

As part of the drill, the National Weather Service will issue a test message over

Mendocino County will also test its MendoAlert notification system. Residents are encouraged to review and update their alert preferences through the county’s emergency alert platform

Officials are also urging residents to check tsunami hazard maps to determine whether their homes, workplaces or frequently visited areas are in evacuation zones

While the Navarro River is not expected to reach its flood stage of 23 feet, it is currently forecast to crest around 14.8 feet early Wednesday morning, meaning state Highway 128 could see flooding.

NOAA does not have an established flood stage for the Garcia River at Highway 1, so we cannot forecast if it will flood or not, but it’s always good to be prepared just in case.

Fire officials advised residents in high-risk areas to just leave home – and not wait for formal evacuation orders — if they sense danger.

That’s exactly what Tim Kang of La Crescenta did last Wednesday. Feeling sick from the smoky air and fearful of nearby fires spreading, Kang and his brothers packed up and have stayed away from their neighborhood.

“Everything just felt like, ‘Oh man, the world’s ending,’” said Kang, who’s staying with his girlfriend in Pasadena.

In less than a week, four fires around the nation’s second-biggest city have scorched more than 62 square miles (160 square kilometers), roughly three times the size of Manhattan.

The National Weather Service warned the

The Eaton Fire near Pasadena is roughly one-third contained, while the largest blaze in Pacific Palisades on the coast is far less contained.

Searching for victims continues

The death toll is likely to rise, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said Monday. At least two dozen were missing, he said.

Luna said he understands that people are eager to return to their homes and neighborhoods to survey the damage, but he asked for their patience. “We have people literally looking for the remains of your neighbors,” he said.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week in North Carolina.

As spring and severe weather season quickly approaches, the National Weather Service is highlighting a different topic each day through Saturday.

Sunday’s topic was an overview for the week.

Monday focuses on severe storms and tornadoes.

Tuesday highlights ways to receive severe
Match: weather
After: alerts and information about the statewide tornado drill, which will take place on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday will detail staying safe when high winds, hail and tornadoes strike.

Thursday is lightning safety, with Friday emphasizing flash flood safety.

The final day of Severe Weather Preparedness Week on Saturday focuses on making a plan and encouraging others to do the same.

Although severe weather isn’t as common in the Cape Fear as it is in other parts of the country, dangerous storms do happen.

From 1991 through 2021, there were 412 injuries and 35 deaths from severe weather events.

It’s important to make sure you’re prepared ahead of the approaching severe weather months.

Before: performance doesn’t come from a product spec or a studio photo. It comes from the people using it every day.

We’re launching a new initiative called Field Tested to showcase Tennier gear where it belongs: in the field, in action, and in real environments. This is about authentic use—no staging, no polish—just real-world performance.

If you’re using Tennier gear, we want to see it.

Getting involved is simple. Take a photo of your Tennier gear in use and post it on Instagram. When you do, tag your post with #TennierGear. That’s the only step required to be part of the campaign.

We’ll be reviewing posts on an ongoing basis and selecting photos to feature across Tennier’s social channels. If your photo is selected, we’ll credit you and share it with the broader Tennier audience.

We’re especially interested in seeing Tennier gear used in real conditions—training environments, cold

  • OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern) is the current standard issue for the U.S. Army and Air Force. It was developed for versatility in woodland, desert, and urban settings.

    Canada’s

After: service has issued a “yellow warning” for the Capital Saturday, calling for showers through the morning and risks of thunderstorms late this afternoon.

Environment Canada forecasts total precipitation of five to 10 mm, with winds out of the southwest at 30 km/h gusting to 50 km/h.

The agency cautioned that frozen ground in the area “has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall … Water will likely pool on roads and in low-lying areas.”

A yellow warning means the impact of the weather is considered moderate.

Saturday’s high temperature is expected to hit 11 C, the agency said.

The showers are expected to end late in the afternoon, followed by cloudy periods with 40 per cent chance of showers or drizzle.

There was no indication the weather would affect the long-awaited St. Patrick’s Day parade, returning to Ottawa’s downtown for the first time since the COVID pandemic.

“High concentrations of fine particulate matter from the forest fires are resulting in poor air quality. These conditions may continue until Sunday,” the notice for Gatineau said.

The Air Quality Health monitor for Ottawa was at 4 by Saturday evening, “moderate” on a 10+ scale, and the forecast was for an improvement to levels 2 and 3 (“low risk”) for Sunday.

May was dry as well as warm, though there was nothing record-setting about it. We ended the month with 52.2 millimetres of rain, compared to a long-term average of about 79 millimetres. (Rainfall varies much more than temperature does.)

Now the past two days have made up for the rain that May didn’t bring. Ottawa received 20 millimetres of rain Sunday and about 43 millimetres as of 3 p.m. Monday. That’s more than the entire month of May.

Weather historian Rolf Campbell, who plots many weather stats for Ottawa, notes on Twitter that Monday has been the wettest June 4 in the past 69 years. Again, it’s nowhere near a record thanks to some torrential early June days back in the early 1900s.

As the tiresome adage says: At least you don’t have to shovel it.

The temperature during the day Friday is expected to remain around 6 C, but it will start to cool this afternoon down right as kids head out to go trick-or-treating.

Conditions are the same around the region.

Saturday’s forecast is cloudy with a high of 6 C, but the rain should be out of the region by then.
As for walking, there may be glare ice on the ground. Police have been filling social media channels warning parents to keep track of their kids. Bright, colourful clothing is recommended to help drivers see the treaters.

All school buses serving the Catholic and Public school boards were cancelled on Monday morning after officials with the Ottawa School Transportation Authority deemed road conditions too “icy”.

“Due to icy road conditions all school buses are school vans are cancelled for today,” wrote the school busing authority on Twitter.

Freezing rain may be more prolonged in the area’s around Ottawa, as temperatures there will have difficulty in getting above the zero degree mark until Monday afternoon. Ice amounts of up to 5 mm or so are possible, according to Environment Canada.

The weather watcher warned that surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become icy and slippery. It urged people to slow down while driving as slippery conditions are possible. It also said that ice build-up may cause some tree branches to break.

In this flip-flop spring, we had a frigid April but have just finished the 18th-warmest May since records began, back in the 1870s.
