Sarney Filho defende Museu do Índio

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="; width="320" />
Festa do moqueado na Aldeia Maracanã

O momento é crítico e pede-se a atenção de todos ao chamado das lideranças indígenas da Aldeia Maracanã. Os países signatários da convenção se comprometem a consultar os povos interessados quando forem previstas medidas legislativas ou administrativas que os afetem diretamente, garantindo a efetiva participação dos povos indígenas e tribais na tomada de decisões. Nós, do Movimento Indígena Revolucionário, denunciamos, na ocasião, que a Convenção 169 da OIT está sendo completamente desrespeitada pelo Governo Federal e pelas empresas privadas. Nós denunciamos que a Convenção não foi aplicada devidamente desde sua ratificação até os dias de hoje, mantendo impunes todas as violações cometidas contra as nações indígenas. Temos como exemplos desses crimes: as construções de hidrelétricas; explorações do subsolo, com mineração em Terras Indígenas, sem consulta prévia aos indígenas; assassinatos de lideranças e guerreiros indígenas; prisões arbitrárias de indígenas; Decreto 7056/09 – que tirou a estabilidade da FUNAI; Portaria 303 da AGU; genocídio dos Guarani Kaiowá; etc. Carlos Pankararu explica ao Ministro Sílvio como a Convenção 169 está sendo totalmente rasgada no Brasil: <a href="; Se realmente o Governo se interessasse em preservar o cerrado, não teria cortado as árvores onde os indígenas do Acampamento Indígena Revolucionário estavam acampados durante os nove primeiros meses do ano de 2010.<a href="; ;

Zahy Guajajara;
Integrante da ocupação indígena Aldeia Maracanã.

2012/06/manifesto-na-aldeia-maracana.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Acampamento Indigena)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-585225950989449275.post-7234043640961004770Tue, 12 Jun 2012 15:22:00 +00002012-06-12T08:22:18.765-07:00Carta do Rio + 20

CARTA DO RIO + 20 REIVINDICAÇÕES

Flights, hotels, local transport, food, activities, and last-minute bookings can put pressure on your savings. If you need additional funds for a planned trip, a loan for travel can be one financing option to consider. With the Fibe loan app, eligible customers can explore personal loan options digitally and manage the application journey from their smartphones. This can be particularly convenient for salaried professionals who want to arrange their finances without spending time visiting a branch. First, Decide How Much Your Vacation Will Actually Cost Before looking for a loan, create a realistic travel budget. Start with the expenses you already know and then keep some room for unexpected costs. Your vacation budget can include: Flight, train, or bus tickets Hotel or accommodation Local transportation Food and beverages Sightseeing and activities Travel insurance Shopping and personal expenses Emergency funds Once you have estimated the total cost, subtract the amount you can comfortably pay from your savings. The remaining requirement can help you determine whether you actually need additional borrowing. Why Consider Fibe for a Travel Loan? Fibe brings convenience to the personal loan journey through its digital-first approach. Eligible borrowers can explore their loan options online, provide the required information, complete applicable verification, and review the available terms digitally. For someone preparing for a vacation, this means the loan application can be managed around existing travel and work commitments. The Fibe loan app can also make it easier to access relevant loan information from your smartphone instead of relying on repeated branch visits. How to Keep Your Travel Loan Affordable Taking a loan for a vacation means your holiday expenses will continue into your future monthly budgets. That’s why repayment planning should be part of your travel planning. Choose Only the Amount You Need Don’t borrow extra simply because a higher amount is available. Calculate the actual funding gap and consider whether the expense is essential. Compare the EMI with Your Monthly Budget Your EMI should fit comfortably alongside rent, household expenses, existing EMIs, savings, and other regular commitments. Consider the Total Repayment A lower EMI may look attractive, but extending the tenure can increase the overall interest payable. Compare different repayment periods before accepting an offer. Keep an Emergency Buffer Avoid spending every rupee of your savings on the vacation. Keeping some emergency money aside can help you handle unexpected expenses during or after the trip. Is a Fast Cash Loan App Right for Your Vacation? Looking for a fast cash loan app can be a practical option when you need funds for travel or another urgent expense. If you are planning to use a loan app, take some time to verify the lender, understand the applicable charges, review the terms and conditions, and check the repayment schedule before applying. Avoid loan apps that promise guaranteed approval or ask for unnecessary sensitive information. Choosing a recognised digital lending platform and understanding the overall cost of borrowing can help you make a more informed financial decision. Why 10,000 Amazon Searches Can Beat 20,000 /why-10000-amazon-searches-can-beat-20000/ Tue, 18 Aug 2026 09:08:30 +0000 /?p=1571 TL;DR A keyword at 10,000 searches growing 20% month over month is usually a better target than one at 20,000 standing still. The same term reads differently over a 30-day window than a 12-month average. Tools rarely say which you are looking at.5,000 searches is huge in Germany and tiny in the US. Volume without a market attached is not a number.Ten keywords at 500 volume you can win beats one at 5,000 you cannot. Short version: volume is a size reading. Size is the least decision-relevant thing about a keyword. Six hundred people a month search the phrase “amazon search volume,” which tells you the metric matters to sellers and nothing about how they should use it. That is a fair illustration of the problem with the metric itself. Search volume is the first number every keyword tool shows and the one most likely to be read as a verdict. It is not a verdict. It is one of four readings, and taken alone it reliably points at the terms hardest to win. What the Number Is Actually Measuring Volume estimates how many times a phrase was searched in a marketplace over a period. Three things about that sentence do more work than they appear to. It is an estimate. No third-party tool has Amazon’s query logs. Every figure is modeled, and models carry error bars that the interface almost never shows. A stated volume figure is a modeled output, not a measurement, and the good tools say so. It counts searches, not searchers. One person checking a term nine times over a week contributes nine. It is bounded by a window. Which brings us to the reading most often got wrong. Window: The Same Keyword, Two Different Numbers A 30-day window and a 12-month average describe the same keyword and produce different figures, sometimes by multiples. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions. The 30-day window answers “what is happening now,” which is the right question for inventory and bid decisions. The 12-month average answers “what is normally true,” which is the right question for whether to launch a product at all. Sellers get burned when they read a 30-day figure taken during a seasonal peak as though it were the annual norm, order stock against it, and discover in February that the peak was the number. The reverse error is quieter and just as expensive: reading a 12-month average during a rising trend and under-ordering. A useful discipline is to look at both and note the gap. A term whose 30-day figure sits well above its 12-month average is either seasonal or growing, and those need opposite responses. The smaller term overtakes the larger one inside a year, and costs far less to rank for while it does. ReadingQuestion it answersDecision it should drive30-day windowWhat is demand doing right nowBids, restock timing12-month averageWhat is normally trueWhether to enter the categoryDirection of travelIs it rising or decayingWhether to build around itRelative rank in marketIs this figure big for this countryWhether the number means anything Direction Beats Size This is the reading that changes decisions most and appears in tools least. A keyword pulling 10,000 searches a month and growing 20% month over month is generally a better target than one pulling 20,000 and flat. The smaller term is on its way to being the larger one, competition for it has not yet arrived, and the cost of ranking today is a fraction of what it will be after it doubles. Seasonality is the same reading on a longer axis. The question is not whether a term peaks but how early it starts to move. If volume begins rising two months before the peak, that is your inventory lead time telling you when to order, and it is visible in the data long before it is visible in sales. Volume Without a Market Is Not a Number Five thousand searches in Germany is a large term. Five thousand in the US is a rounding error. The figure is identical and the conclusion inverts. The same applies within a single market across categories. Fifty thousand searches is good in Electronics. A thousand can be excellent in industrial and scientific tools, where the buyers are few and the order values are not. Any volume figure read without knowing the size of the pond it came from is a decoration. This is where a keyword tool earns its cost, because the useful output is not the raw figure but the figure in context. A good read on Amazon search volume pairs the number with what surrounds it: how the term’s traffic distributes across the listings already ranking, whether the leaders are entrenched, and whether the number is moving. The Winnability Discount The last reading is the one that turns volume into strategy. A keyword might show 50,000 searches while the top ten results all carry 20,000-plus reviews. That is not an opportunity, it is a wall with a number painted on it. The volume is real and entirely unavailable to you. The arithmetic that follows is straightforward and widely ignored. If you can dominate ten keywords at 500 searches each, you have 5,000 searches of genuinely addressable demand. If you fail to crack the top twenty on one keyword at 5,000, you have none. The second option looks better in a spreadsheet and pays nothing. A workable scoring model is three axes out of five: demand, relevance, and ability to win. A term scoring 5, 5 and 2 totals 12 out of 15 and should be treated with suspicion, because the axis it fails is the one that determines whether the other two ever apply. One last caution about the figures themselves. Because every volume number is modeled rather than measured, precision claims made for them deserve scrutiny. The FTC’s advertising and marketing guidance is direct that claims must be truthful and evidence-based and that companies have to be able to support them, which applies to a tool vendor’s accuracy claims as much as to a product listing. Treat a volume figure quoted to the nearest unit as a presentation choice, not a measurement. Building the List A practical target list runs 50 to 100 keywords in three tiers: one primary term above 10,000, roughly five support terms between 2,000 and 5,000, and ten or more long-tails under 1,000. Note the shape. The long-tails outnumber everything else, and collectively they usually deliver more addressable demand than the primary term does, at a fraction of the cost to rank. The primary term is there to be aimed at over years, not won in a quarter. When a whole category appears to move at once, check it against something outside your own account before reacting. The Census Bureau’s Monthly Retail Trade Survey publishes the equivalent reading at the whole-economy level, which is a cheap way to tell a genuine seasonal swing from an artifact of your own listings going in or out of stock. Pull your current listing’s top five terms and write the 30-day and 12-month figures side by side. Where the two diverge sharply, you have either a seasonal term you are treating as evergreen or a growing one you are underinvesting in. Both are worth an afternoon. How to Start Investing in Mutual Funds After Opening Your Demat Account /how-to-start-investing-in-mutual-funds-after-opening-your-demat-account/ Mon, 17 Aug 2026 11:29:06 +0000 /?p=1568 The account is finally active. KYC is done, the welcome email has arrived, and there’s a slightly odd moment of not quite knowing what to actually do next. This gap between finishing the paperwork and making a first real investment trips up more beginners than any actual financial concept does. Day One: What To Do The Moment The Account Goes Live Avoid clicking into the first fund that appears interesting right soon after activation. Spend a few minutes checking in, investigating the UI, and figuring out where the returns calculator, fund research, and historical performance are located within the application. Getting comfortable with the layout on day one saves real confusion later when an actual decision needs making under slight time pressure. Week One: Picking A First Fund To Actually Invest In Mutual Funds By the end of the first week, most people are ready to invest in mutual funds for the first time. This starts with a basic decision: lumpsum or SIP. A lumpsum works well for someone with a set amount ready to deploy immediately, while an SIP suits someone who’d rather commit a smaller, regular amount every month instead. Neither choice is permanent, and plenty of investors eventually use both once they’re more comfortable navigating the process. Comparing Lumpsum And SIP For A First Investment Approach How It Works Best Suited For Lumpsum One larger transaction at current NAV Investors with a ready sum and market conviction SIP Fixed smaller amount deducted at regular intervals Beginners wanting to build a steady habit Combination Lumpsum for an initial base, SIP for ongoing additions Investors wanting both a starting point and consistency Common First-Timer Questions Right After Getting Started A few questions come up constantly once someone finishes setting up their account. How much should a first investment actually be? Most platforms allow starting with amounts as low as a few hundred rupees, so the answer is usually smaller than people expect. Does setting up an account automatically grant access to mutual funds too? Generally yes, since most modern platforms including HDFC Sky bundle stock and fund investing under the same login rather than treating them as separate products entirely. Month One: Building A Habit, Not Just Completing A Transaction A single purchase, however well researched, isn’t really the goal. By the end of the first month, the aim should be a repeatable habit, whether that’s a monthly SIP date circled on a calendar or a quarterly review of how a fund is actually performing relative to its stated benchmark. Investors who treat that first transaction as the beginning of a routine, rather than a one-off task to check off right after demat account opening, tend to build meaningfully larger portfolios over the following years. What To Track Once Money Is Actually Invested Once the first investment is live, a few things deserve regular attention: the fund’s NAV movement, whether SIP instalments are actually going through on schedule, and how the expense ratio compares to similar funds in the same category. None of this needs daily monitoring, but a monthly glance keeps small issues from turning into bigger surprises later, well beyond whatever setup happened during demat account opening itself. Mistakes Worth Avoiding Early On New investors commonly make a handful of avoidable mistakes right after getting started. Chasing last year’s best performing fund without checking whether that performance is likely to repeat is a common one. Ignoring the expense ratio entirely, assuming it barely matters, is another, even though it quietly compounds over a longer holding period. Redeeming units at the first sign of a market dip, rather than sticking with a chosen time horizon, tends to undo whatever benefit a disciplined approach was meant to provide in the first place. Bringing It All Together Completing demat account opening is just the starting line, not the finish. Getting comfortable with the platform, choosing between lumpsum and SIP, and deciding to invest in mutual funds with a clear first step all matter more than waiting for the perfect fund or the perfect moment. The habit built in that first month tends to matter far more, over time, than any single early decision. A Simple Guide To Understanding Daily Silver Prices /a-simple-guide-to-understanding-daily-silver-prices/ Sat, 08 Aug 2026 06:45:38 +0000 /a-simple-guide-to-understanding-daily-silver-prices/ Households across the country preparing for an upcoming festival or family occasion often check the Silver Rate Today before finalising their shopping list, and for residents of the capital in particular, following the Silver Rate Today in Delhi has become a practical first step before visiting any bullion dealer or jeweller. Silver’s affordability compared to gold makes it an accessible choice for a wide range of buyers, from those purchasing a small gift to families investing in coins or utensils as part of a longer-term saving habit. The Journey From Global Markets to Local Dealers The price a buyer sees at a local shop is the result of a fairly layered process. It starts with continuous trading on international commodity exchanges, where silver’s dollar-denominated price responds to a combination of industrial demand, currency strength, and investor behaviour during periods of economic uncertainty. This international rate is then converted into rupees based on the day’s exchange rate, after which import duty and other applicable costs are added to determine the landed price of silver entering the domestic market. City-level bullion associations calculate a daily rate using this landed cost along with local wholesale conditions, and retail dealers generally price their silver products in line with this published figure. Understanding Silver’s Unique Market Position What sets silver apart from most other precious metals is its traditional role in jewellery and gifts as well as its heavy reliance on commercial use. A large part of the global demand for silver comes from areas such as electronics manufacturing, solar energy and many trade policies. When traded play options occur worldwide; calls on silver typically rise alongside it, occasionally triggering sharper interest rate action than typically seen in the gold market during comparable periods. Popular Ways Silver Is Purchased Silver is bought in several different forms depending on the buyer’s intent. Coins and bars are a common choice among those who want to invest in the metal without paying significant making charges, since their price is closer to the base metal rate with minimal craftsmanship cost added. Traditional silverware, including plates, bowls, and decorative pieces, remains a popular choice for religious ceremonies and festive gifting, as silver is considered auspicious in many Indian households. Silver jewellery, ranging from simple anklets to more elaborate designs, also continues to attract steady demand, particularly among buyers who want an affordable alternative to gold for everyday wear. What Causes Silver Prices to Fluctuate Several forces work together to move silver prices on any given day. Changes in global industrial output and manufacturing trends often have a direct impact on demand, given how widely the metal is used across various sectors. The strength or weakness of the rupee against the dollar also plays a meaningful role, since silver is priced internationally before being converted for local sale. Domestic demand tied to festivals and wedding-related purchases adds a further layer of movement, with buying activity typically rising during specific periods of the year and sometimes prompting dealers to adjust their pricing slightly during these busier stretches. Tips for Buying Silver Wisely Before making a purchase, it helps to compare and check fees between a handful of reputable dealers, as these costs can vary quite a bit even when the underlying silver price is the same on the market. Checking to see if the seller provides any purity certification is also a practical precaution, especially for large purchases with silver bullion units or investment-grade bars. Closing Perspective for Silver Buyers Silver remains an important part of everyday life and tradition across Indian households, valued for its affordability, cultural significance, and dual role as both a precious and industrial metal. Buyers who take the time to understand how its price is determined, along with the practical differences between various forms of silver available in the market, are consistently better equipped to make purchases that offer genuine value. Key Points Households in India often check the Silver Rate Today as a practical step before shopping for festivals or family occasions. The price of silver in local markets is influenced by international commodity trading, currency strength, and added import costs. Silver is distinct from other precious metals due to its significant commercial use alongside its traditional roles in jewelry and gifts. Coins and bars are popular forms of silver purchased by investors to minimize craftsmanship costs. Silver prices fluctuate based on global industrial output, the strength of the rupee, and seasonal domestic demand related to festivals and weddings. Buyers should compare fees from multiple dealers and check for purity certification to ensure value in their purchases. Modernize Identity and Access Management for Enhanced Digital Security and Digital Trust /modernize-identity-and-access-management-for-enhanced-digital-security-and-digital-trust/ Sat, 25 Jul 2026 10:04:35 +0000 /?p=1553 Every digital interaction begins with identity. Whether employees access cloud platforms, customers log into online services, or administrators manage enterprise systems, organizations must verify users before granting access. As digital ecosystems continue to expand, protecting identities has become one of the most important aspects of cybersecurity. This growing focus on Identity and Access Management is helping organizations build secure environments while supporting productivity and business growth. Identity security is no longer limited to IT departments. It now influences operational resilience, customer trust, regulatory compliance, and long-term digital transformation. Organizations that invest in strong identity governance are better positioned to reduce cyber risks while maintaining seamless user experiences. Managing Access Across Expanding Ecosystems Modern enterprises operate across multiple cloud services, remote work environments, mobile devices, and third-party platforms. Managing access manually across these environments quickly becomes difficult and increases the likelihood of security gaps. Identity governance centralizes user authentication and authorization, ensuring every individual receives appropriate access based on responsibilities. This structured approach minimizes unnecessary privileges while simplifying administration across complex infrastructures. As organizations continue adopting new technologies, centralized identity management becomes increasingly valuable for maintaining both efficiency and security. Reducing Risks From Stolen Credentials Credential theft remains one of the most common methods used by cybercriminals. Phishing campaigns, password reuse, malware, and social engineering attacks frequently target user credentials because they often provide direct access to valuable systems. Modern identity security solutions reduce this risk through layered authentication, continuous monitoring, and intelligent verification. Even if login credentials become compromised, additional authentication requirements significantly reduce the chances of unauthorized access. Protecting identities at multiple stages creates stronger security than relying solely on usernames and passwords. Building Smarter Authentication Processes Authentication technologies have evolved considerably over the past decade. Traditional passwords are increasingly being replaced or strengthened through biometric verification, authentication applications, hardware security keys, and behavioral analysis. Modern authentication systems adapt according to context. Routine logins from trusted devices may require minimal verification, while unusual login attempts automatically trigger additional authentication steps. Insights shared by Identity and Access Management (IAM) speakers continue to demonstrate how adaptive authentication improves both security and user experience across modern enterprises. This adaptive security model strengthens protection while allowing legitimate users to work efficiently without unnecessary interruptions. Strengthening Privileged Account Protection Not every user requires the same level of system access. Administrative accounts often possess elevated privileges capable of modifying systems, accessing confidential information, or managing security settings. Protecting these privileged identities requires additional safeguards. Organizations increasingly implement stricter authentication requirements, session monitoring, approval workflows, and detailed activity logging for high-privilege accounts. Limiting privileged access reduces opportunities for attackers while improving accountability across critical business operations. Supporting Secure Remote Work Environments Remote and hybrid work models have permanently changed how organizations manage cybersecurity. Employees now connect from homes, shared workspaces, airports, and international locations using various devices and networks. Identity-centered security allows organizations to verify users regardless of location. Instead of trusting network boundaries alone, access decisions consider user identity, device status, login behavior, and associated risks. This flexible approach enables secure remote access while maintaining strong protection across distributed workforces. Identity Governance Improves Compliance Regulatory compliance increasingly requires organizations to demonstrate control over user identities and access permissions. Industries handling financial records, healthcare information, government services, and customer data must prove that only authorized individuals access sensitive resources. Identity governance simplifies compliance by providing centralized visibility into permissions, authentication records, and access history. Automated reporting, periodic access reviews, and policy enforcement help organizations meet regulatory expectations while reducing administrative workload. Artificial Intelligence Enhances Identity Security Artificial intelligence is transforming identity protection by making authentication systems more intelligent and responsive. Instead of evaluating only passwords, AI continuously analyzes user behavior, login patterns, device characteristics, network activity, and historical usage. These insights allow systems to identify suspicious activity much earlier than traditional security methods. Adaptive authentication powered by AI helps organizations respond immediately when unusual behavior is detected, reducing both response times and security risks. Industry Collaboration Drives Innovation Identity security continues evolving as cyber threats become increasingly sophisticated. Collaboration between technology providers, researchers, policymakers, and enterprise leaders plays an essential role in accelerating innovation. Knowledge sharing allows organizations to evaluate new authentication methods, governance frameworks, and access control technologies before implementing them within their own environments. Insights shared by Identity and Access Management (IAM) speakers often provide valuable perspectives on emerging risks, evolving compliance requirements, and practical implementation strategies. Their expertise helps organizations understand both current challenges and future developments in identity security. Preparing For The Future Of Identity The future of cybersecurity will depend heavily on identity-centered protection. Passwordless authentication, decentralized digital identities, behavioral biometrics, continuous verification, and AI-driven decision-making are expected to become standard components of enterprise security strategies. Organizations investing in these capabilities today will be better prepared for tomorrow’s digital environments. Identity security will continue shifting from simple authentication toward continuous trust verification that protects users throughout every interaction. Building flexible identity frameworks today creates a strong foundation for future innovation while supporting long-term resilience. Creating Long Term Digital Trust Digital trust is built through consistent protection of users, systems, and information. Strong identity governance enables organizations to maintain secure digital experiences without creating unnecessary complexity. Employees gain reliable access to the tools they need, customers enjoy safer online interactions, and organizations strengthen confidence across their digital operations. When identity management becomes an integral part of business strategy rather than an isolated security function, organizations create stronger operational resilience and improve their ability to adapt to changing cybersecurity challenges. Conclusion Identity protection has become one of the defining elements of modern cybersecurity. As organizations expand digital operations, stronger authentication, intelligent governance, adaptive access controls, and continuous verification are becoming essential for protecting both users and business assets. A comprehensive Identity and Access Management strategy helps organizations maintain secure access while supporting productivity across increasingly complex digital environments. It also strengthens regulatory compliance by ensuring that user permissions are monitored and updated consistently. As cyber threats continue to evolve, investing in robust identity security creates a stronger foundation for long-term resilience and digital trust. Ongoing collaboration and knowledge sharing continue to drive innovation across this rapidly evolving field, and industry events such as PhilSec 2026 Summit provide valuable opportunities to explore the future of secure identity management and digital trust. How Global Cybersecurity Conferences Drive Industry Collaboration /how-global-cybersecurity-conferences-drive-industry-collaboration/ Mon, 20 Jul 2026 12:45:13 +0000 /?p=1562 Digital transformation has improved business innovation and connectivity but has also increased cybersecurity risks. At a business intelligence conference, industry professionals come together to discuss how actionable insights improve efficiency across various business processes. This blog examines proven methods for boosting operational efficiency using strategic business intelligence practices and related technologies. Insights from leading industry events, including machine learning summits and data analytics summits, showcase real-world applications and innovative approaches that drive smarter, data-informed decision-making. What is Business Intelligence and Why Operational Efficiency Matters Business intelligence refers to the tools, technologies, and practices used to collect, integrate, analyze, and present business information. The primary goal is to provide actionable insights that help businesses make faster, better decisions. Operational efficiency involves achieving optimal productivity with minimal wasted resources, time, and costs. When these two disciplines intersect, organizations unlock a stronger ability to achieve strategic goals through data-driven operations. The Role of Data Collection and Integration A foundational method to enhance operational efficiency with business intelligence begins with accurate data collection and integration. Fragmented data sets or siloed systems impede insights and consistency. Integrating data from different sources, such as sales platforms, customer support tools, and supply chain databases, creates a unified information repository. When organizations implement robust data integration practices, the reliability of dashboards and reports increases, enabling real‑time evaluation of key performance indicators (KPIs). At an enterprise intelligence conference, data architects often present case studies showing how unified data ecosystems eliminate redundancies and reduce manual data reconciliation efforts, saving time and reducing errors. Turning Data into Meaningful Insights Once data is integrated and accurate, advanced analytical methods are applied to extract meaningful patterns. This translation from raw data to insights is central to business intelligence. Organizations use analytical workflows from descriptive analytics to predictive forecasting to anticipate outcomes rather than merely react to them. For example, predictive modeling can forecast production delays or identify products likely to exceed budget constraints. These forecasts allow teams to proactively adjust operations before bottlenecks occur. In sessions on AI integration at global machine learning summits, experts share models that help streamline forecasting in inventory management and workforce allocation, proving how predictive insights directly support operational efficiency. Improving Decision‑Making with Interactive Dashboards Interactive dashboards are core tools in the business intelligence toolkit. These interfaces present data visually through charts, heat maps, and trend lines, making complex data patterns easier to digest. By empowering stakeholders with easily accessible dashboards, decision‑making becomes faster and more informed. Operational teams use BI dashboards to monitor daily performance metrics and adjust processes promptly. For instance, logistics teams might instantly see delays in delivery times and respond with schedule changes. Key executives can monitor quarterly efficiency targets without relying on manual reports. This democratization of insights drives alignment across an organization. A business intelligence conference often features sessions on best practices in dashboard design, emphasizing clarity and relevance to specific operational goals. Leveraging Machine Learning for Smarter Operations Machine learning bridges the gap between traditional business intelligence and advanced data science. In a machine learning conference, practitioners discuss how algorithms can identify hidden patterns and optimize decision frameworks. These capabilities are especially valuable for repetitive or high‑volume decisions where human judgment alone may be insufficient. Machine learning models can automate routine tasks such as anomaly detection in financial transactions, predictive maintenance scheduling in manufacturing, or demand forecasting in retail operations. Automating such workflows reduces manual intervention, cuts decision latency, and frees up personnel for strategic work. When machine learning is integrated with BI platforms, organizations achieve end‑to‑end analytical capabilities that significantly elevate operational performance. Standardizing Data Governance and Quality Controls Efficient operations hinge on trusted data. A common challenge in business intelligence adoption is inconsistent data quality and governance practices. Without standardized rules on data definitions, access, and quality checks, insights can be unreliable and misleading. Implementing data governance frameworks enhances confidence

While here, AA has taken the opportunity to visit such august institutions as the Bodleian Library and (tomorrow!) the British Library. There are striking contrasts to be found everywhere, most notably in architecture.

In thinking and reading about these institutions, I wonder if anybody out there has ever thought of making a library equivalent of a certain business index I had heard of. This business index compares how long (in days/weeks/months/years) and how difficult (measured by number of steps and/or organizations one must interact with) it takes to create a business. There is a general sense that it is easier and faster to establish a business in the United States than in many western European countries, for instance.

A comparable library index might measure how difficult it is for a user to become registered in order to access library services. Such an index may need to be seperated out by sector, or there would be significant distortions (e.g. public libraries are, by virtue of their mission, more open than other libraries as a general rule), but it would stillSome libraries seem to simply make themselves easier to access than others. There may be reasons for that, but it would understanding how access works would become more interesting in comparitive terms.

One final note before I conclude today. On the Tube, there are frequent advertisements for the British Library. However, all of these ads focus on this Library's business centre. It strikes me as very interesting that a) a National Library has a business centre at all and b) that this particular service is the one that is being advertised. I wonder if other National Libraries (or Archives, for that matter) have considered opening a business research/support office. I'm not sure what I think about it as I know very little about it, so I shall suspend judgement for the time being.2009/02/blog-post.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-6579660564849579510Sun, 08 Feb 2009 23:18:00 +00002009-02-08T18:31:30.592-05:00Why isn't there DOI for the popular media? For a course I'm taking, I periodically have trouble accessing journal articles online (e.g. today there was a problem getting a 2004 article from Library Quarterly). However, most of the time everything works smoothly. I can simply click on a link in my course syllabus and automatically be sent to a PDF of the article.

This automatic system works since most academic articles are assigned a unique identifier called a <a href=";, or Digital Object Identifier. Using a DOI for articles saves the time of the reader, one of Ranganathan's five laws of librarianship.

Well, I'm irritated that this practice isn't used in popular media. I'll illustrate the problem using comedy. Lots of Canadians enjoy The Colbert Report and The Daily Show, and enjoy discussing said programs with each other. However, not all Canadians enjoy these programs by watching broadcasts on TV. Some see clips referred to in blogs... However, woe be to you if you imagine that you can simply play one of these clips. For if you do, you will encounter the following result:

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 399px; height: 400px;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300572773257842882" />

If DOI was used properly, an automatic link to the appropriate content should be found and the user shouldn't have to think about any of these technical questions. The above example comes from <a href=" blogpost by author Neil Gaiman.2009/02/why-isnt-there-doi-for-popular-media.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-705388438568543428Wed, 04 Feb 2009 05:27:00 +00002009-02-04T00:45:33.204-05:00Databases and archivesI have been fascinated to read about the various open government and Web 2.0 government efforts in the US and UK. The UK has the interesting <a href=" Work For You; information on MPs and their actions. <a href=" Secrets is a great American project likewise dedicated to providing information about elected officials.

I can see a future where archives deliver new services through databases, automatically post all Freedom of Information / Access to Information responses online and I look forward to that day. The existing service model is only going to get more and more difficult to explain. Even though archives are generally perceived as being concerned with the past, the only way to thrive in the future is to build out new services like this. Maybe databases of the type suggested here wouldn't work, but let's get some innovation happening!2009/02/databases-and-archives.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-3752057729798842832Thu, 29 Jan 2009 03:54:00 +00002009-01-29T01:10:44.749-05:00Two tales of friends and their information needsI saw two friends trying to find information today, but only one was open to letting me help. The first person was trying to find material for her English courses and I pointed her toward <a href=" MLA International Bibliography as a good starting point and showed some of the search functions. She was much surprised at such tools and appeared to be pleased with this lead.

Lesson:
In this case, the advice provided was partly accepted since the conversation took place in the context of academic work and it involved using a library database. Advice from an information professional context is welcome in an educational context using educational research tools.

In the other case, a friend was looking for some recreational information (music, to be precise) she had previously accessed. When I noticed that she was searching Google with no apparent success, I asked what she was up to. I said, "Ah, you're looking for information - that is my speciality, actually..." She then responded, "Well, it's not information; it's <this thing I just happened to be interested in>." It was clear that advice was not wanted. She did eventually find what she wanted but only after much searching around and much frustration.

Lesson:
Advising people in research when they are using a familiar tool like a commercial search engine is a much more challenging "sell". People often find what they want through such means, even though such tools are often manipulated through <a href=" techniques. It might also be important that the second interaction took place in a leisure or recreational context.2009/01/two-tales-of-friends-and-their.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-4321887472159343814Mon, 26 Jan 2009 22:35:00 +00002009-01-26T17:46:22.082-05:00The Persistence of Archaic Conventions on the WebI work as a volunteer editor at a journal based at my university. This position has reminded me just how much a piece of writing can improve when it goes through multiple rounds of editing by different people. And it has reminded me of how much I intensely dislike copy-editing. It just doesn't engage me, but that isn't the point of this post.

The journal is entirely online, with each article available in both plain HTML and in PDF. The publishing platform we use is the <a href=" Journal System. Where things get interesting is the transition (or rather, the painful lack thereof) between pieces of writing created for print and those created for the Web. In most cases, submissions to the journal started their life as assignments for classes. There's certainly nothing wrong with that. I presume that all authors created their articles on computers and then, since academia is backwards, printed a copy to be submitted to their instructor. When the submissions come to us, we take print conventions and apply it to the Web.

I have learned a few things about the differences one should keep in mind when writing for the Web. One important rule should be to actually use hyperlinks, as you can see in the previous paragraph. In this case, you don't have to wonder what <a href=" Open Journal System is when I refer to it or waste time searching for it or asking around, you simply click the link and you find out what it is all about. Thus, I am driven a bit mad by the use of traditional footnotes and endnotes in the digital environment. Those particular modes of citation have no place in the digital environment.

I am reminded of very early printed books (c.1450-1500) where printers and others actively sought to re-create the conventions of manuscript books in print since they presumed that this is what people wanted. However by following this, they failed to take advantage of the technology's new advantages and fail to acknowledge the ways in which print was actually different from manuscript.2009/01/persistence-of-archaic-conventions-on.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-1734789919007311498Fri, 23 Jan 2009 17:10:00 +00002009-01-23T12:18:58.425-05:00Association responses to the recessionI belong to a number of professional associations to stay informed of developments in the field, network with others and foster my own sense of professional identity. One interesting development I've noticed lately has been the way in which these associations have reacted to the recession. Only one group - <a href=" Special Libraries Association - has taken concrete steps to directly help its members (creating a new low income membership option & providing new free professional development resources).

In contrast, the Canadian Library Association has only responded by asking its members to comment regarding possible federal stimulus spending. Even this appeal was oddly delivered though. Members were encouraged to suggest individual projects to <A href=" Department of Finance. I wonder if anything will come of this? In my mind, I found it difficult to suggest such projects as I think expanded light rail transit in my city and higher post-secondary education spending is arguably needed more.

As far as know, no archival association or group has put together any response to the recession. Are archivists in a position to help people in this situation?2009/01/association-responses-to-recession.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-2135431538019897275Fri, 16 Jan 2009 15:40:00 +00002009-01-16T10:42:57.858-05:00Qatar still hiring librarians...Wow... Qatar is still hiring librarians quite consistently; I've seen listings this week on job boards in Canada and the UK for staff to go there, mainly at post-secondary institutions. The first episode I listened to was <a href=" interview with Clay Shirky. <a href="; is a telecommunications scholar who is seen as something of guru on the effects of the Internet.

During the interview, one particular quote struck me. The fundamental idea of it is not new, but it does frame it in a memorable fashion. When asked about the economic effects of Internet fueled collaboration, he responded, "For any business where scarcity of information was the principle selling point, that business is in trouble." He went on to illustrate that point by arguing that the average price of stock photo has decreased 99% due to free services like flickr (which apparently has 1 billion photos online).

If one changes "business" to organization, then the application to universities (and indeed, much formal education) and archives should be clear. It is certainly true that vast stores of information are locked in archives and other special collections and can only be accessed with difficulty, but I wonder if users will continue to remain motivated to jump through all those hoops. Certain kinds of researchers who have a professional requirement to use that kind of research resource - historians, some graduate students, some lawyers - will likely continue, but what about the occasional, 'amateur' user? One archival argument might be that archives are fundamentally concerned with long term memory and that makes them distinctive compared to social web tools.

The competitive edge may lie in fostering community, the approach taken by many public libraries. Sure, you can get books at Amazon, Chapters/Indigo or Borders, but it isn't the same as being in a public place with others. Architecturally, most archives aren't set up to enable this kind of community easily. Perhaps the answer lies in developing more services to enrich the information in our archives? I'm not sure what that would be, but it is something to think about.2009/01/clay-shirky-on-information-scarcity.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-2840602939278258378Tue, 06 Jan 2009 04:24:00 +00002009-01-06T22:37:17.608-05:00The RecessionI haven't written here about the recession yet, even though it hit the US in December 2007 and Canada sometime later. Thus far, it hasn't affected me or anyone I know professionally in anyway. While I certainly don't expect this blessed isolation from economic forces to last much longer (I will be graduating this year...), that may not continue.

I've recently come across several newspaper articles (e.g. <a href=" recent Boston Globe article) and blog postings about the positive role that libraries can play in the current economic climate. For example, a typical bit of thrift advice encourages people to use their public library for entertainment rather than going out to movies or buying books or music. I think libraries have a great role to play at all times, but especially when people are in need of some support.

Can archives make any kind of economic case like this though? I've never seen any argument that pointed to the economic value of archives. I wonder if somebody out there has made that point.2009/01/recession.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-5539278709721658719Sat, 27 Dec 2008 01:17:00 +00002008-12-27T01:26:11.839-05:00Solving mundane information problems: parking on Boxing DayBoxing Day is the biggest shopping day of the year in Canada, with many deals to be had. I myself picked up two hardcover books, at a hefty 30% discount. I also went to see a movie today with two relatives and we found ourselves looking for a parking space for nearly thirty minutes.

Spending that kind of time looking for something like a parking space is both frustrating and sad. This is a fairly simple problem that should have been solved quite some time ago. I've seen some places where very simple information systems have been developed for parking garages (e.g. "There are 57 spaces available here") but could we do something better? Maybe order the sections that people park in? Or set up a GIS system that detects whether or not a space is occupied? I'm not an engineer or programmer by education or experience, but I've seen enough systems and tools out there to know that it should be possible.

This idea could be countered by saying that it only delivers value on days of high volume. That said, it could deliver significant time savings and it could play a role in in lowering December stress levels. I would love to do a study in a particularly busy parking area and see if something like this would be worthwhile.

While I'm thinking of mundane information problems, what about shopping in a supermarket? I hate all the irritating wandering I have to do whenever I enter a new shopping market AND the total lack of basic guides (sure, there are labels for each aisle, but what about a guide to the store as a whole?). Ideally, I'd like to be able to use a touch screen (or some other interface) to indicate the types of products I'd like and then simply have a map or route generated for me.

Wandering around discovering things can be fun in a bookstore or a library sometimes, but not in a parking garage or grocery store.2008/12/solving-mundane-information-problems.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-7107296077367524987Mon, 22 Dec 2008 21:51:00 +00002008-12-22T19:38:10.791-05:00professional musingThe Physicist and Economist: a parable for the Information Profession?Another PhD student I know (this one does economics) told me an interesting joke (parable?) about her profession recently on expertise. I may not be relating the story perfectly, but I think I have the main points right. In sum, I wonder why people think they are information experts when they have only a weak understanding of how to use a handful of tools.

A physicist who recently won the Nobel Prize decides to set up a table in Central Park to answer questions and help people learn about physics. Many line up to ask and many walk away amazed and enlightened to know more about the field. After a day of answering such questions, he returns to his university and describes his activities to some other professors.

An economist hears the story and decides to go and answer questions as well. The economist has a long line of people come to discuss economic answers. Almsot everybody walked away disgruntled, muttering about how the economist didn't know what s/he is talking about. Everybody has a view on economic matters and so they don't respect the expertise of experts.

...

Everybody thinks they know how to find information they need through free search engines like Yahoo! or Google. How many people understand how these services work? How listings are managed and arguably manipulated? Is there an understanding of how do different research efforts (e.g. research a candidate's voting record vs. find a shop that sells a given product etc)? How do we build that respect?

There are a few ways of doing this. The classic and possibly best way is to demonstrate our skills and make sure that our results are recognized (i.e. marketing = "Doing good and being recognized for doing it"). I've also heard that librarians have to pass exams to practice in some countries (e.g. the Philippines) - that might be a possibility too.2008/12/physicist-and-economist-parable-for.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-2913136841407248677Tue, 16 Dec 2008 22:22:00 +00002008-12-16T17:32:25.648-05:00Process Analysis in Cataloguing: Can't we do this better? One of the arguments deployed against human editing or cataloguing of the Internet is that would be too expensive and slow. This is also an argument used in many library contexts (generally not archives since those institutions work with mostly unique materials) against original library cataloguing; it is better to simply digitally import catalogue records from a national library or commercial service.

One of the hats I wear at my university involves doing some cataloguing for an academic research project. Out of curiosity, I started to plot how many steps are involved in cataloging a single item into the database. I stopped counting at step 13, but I would say that there are about 20 steps. That's 20 steps PER ITEM; it takes roughly 3-5 minutes per item catalogued. I would say 80-90% of these steps are highly repeatable, perhaps even amenable to automation with a script. One could respond this by saying "Oh we'll just automate everything and fire the cataloging staff." That's not what I'm advocating here. Rather, I am suggesting that one analyze the process and seek to minimize the ineffective or repeatable steps and let staff focus on the more challenging tasks.

That said, there do not seem to be the right mix of incentives to make this happen. Or perhaps there is just a lack of interest in innovation? I wonder if there is a better way of saying, "A lot of this is boring and highly repeatable; can we work with the IT staff to automate parts of this so that we can all be more effective at work?"2008/12/process-analysis-in-cataloguing-cant-we.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-6972116653705540795Fri, 12 Dec 2008 20:13:00 +00002008-12-18T03:06:28.029-05:00Archivaria Issue 66 has been published; great article on archives in fiction/pop cultureI received an email today informing me that the latest issue of <a href="; (issue 66) has been published online. There are a number of interesting articles and I have only just begun reading through. The article that caught my interest immediately was Karen Buckley article, "The Truth is in the Red Files”: An Overview of Archives in Popular Culture."

In the first episode of the new Doctor Who series, it only takes a few sentences summarizing an exhaustive archival search to encapsulate a general sense of the mystery surrounding the Doctor and his place in time, space, and history: “I tracked [the information] down in the Washington Public Archives … if you dig deep enough … this Doctor keeps cropping up all over the place.”

Fantastic. The mysterious nature of the Doctor is one of the many, many reasons I find him such a captivating character.2008/12/archivaria-issue-66-has-been-published.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-4090935014461823184Tue, 09 Dec 2008 17:08:00 +00002008-12-22T19:39:23.858-05:00Information Asymetries and IncentivesOn the weekend, I purchased <A href="; (it reminds me of another recent work of "pop" economics I read in the summer called The Economic Naturalist) and it has already proved a stimulating read. I have long been interested in social science, of working with real data to try to understand society and then go somewhere with that.

One of the opening themes of the book is a concept the authors call "information symmetry"; the common practice that experts/professionals often hold significantly more information than their audiences or lay people. There is some good research that suggests powerfully negative effects to this. The book examines tens of thousands of house sales in the Chicago area and notes that real estate agents selling their own property typically have that property listed on the market longer and typically sell for much better prices than their clients. The question is one of incentives; if a person selling their property raises the price by $10,000 they get all of that, but if you are working on elaborate commission system, you might earn as little as $150 or $200, so it may not seem worth the effort.

Given the non-profit motives (and indeed, aspirations to empower people with information) of many in the information profession, I wonder how the question of incentives play out. As far as experts go, librarians - on a vague and ideological level, anyhow - are committed to eroding our informational advantage in favor of users. This strikes me as good in many ways, but might that explain some other things? Such as why other professionals who sharply control information or manipulate information (e.g. doctors, lawyers, accountants, engineers, some scientists)?

What makes people come to us? Is it desperation (i.e. information we have cannot be obtained any other way) or something else (preference for filtering)? I do think there is something to be gained from asking the incentive question in a more systematic fashion. What is the effect on incentives if we make services more difficult to use (or conversely, refuse to provide easy methods of access)?

As usual, I don't have well formed ideas on this but I wanted to share some views to provoke further thought.2008/12/information-asymetries-and-incentives.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-568898565361637215Fri, 05 Dec 2008 04:50:00 +00002008-12-05T01:13:17.051-05:00experimentwordleWordle<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href=" style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 263px;" src="; border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276185168857721218" />

<a href=" Archivist on Wordle</a2008/12/wordle.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-7374710887052447991Fri, 05 Dec 2008 03:47:00 +00002008-12-04T22:56:05.789-05:00memeThe Nearest Book MemeAh, memes. It has been a few years since one of these has come out in the bits of the blogosphere that I keep track of. However, the "Nearest Book Meme" is a fun one. Google comes under a lot of attack here for its way of implementing its book scanning/search service. From the perspective of a pro-open access, open source graduate student, I would certainly say there are problems...

That said, why is the emphasis always on a sort of quasi-whining? Sure, Google is popular and often good at what it does. Is it the end of search and using information? No. Why can't there be more discussion and work on projects like <a href=" Open Content Alliance or the Internet Archive? Instead of complaining about why Google is lacking in some way, is it not more productive to build something better? I presume that most critics simply lack the resources or IT skills to create something like that, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be attempted at all.2008/12/alternative-to-blaming-google.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-8931093987920713859Sat, 29 Nov 2008 22:18:00 +00002008-11-29T18:20:35.816-05:00Librarians for the Intelligence ServiceI meant to write a post a few days ago about an information session I attended about the new facility that the Archives of Ontario is moving to at York University. I will write a few notes and then move onto the main theme of this entry. The new building looks quite inviting and I like the prospect of having areas and facilities to deliver programs to the public. I do very much hope the proposal to provide free (?) wireless Internet access to the research areas comes through - that is a fundamental requirement for an archives and one that is fairly cheap to provide. The move and re-opening at the next institution is scheduled for April 2009 and looks set to happen.

Now onto the main reason I'm posting today. For my 100th post (wow, I can't believe I'm there already), I'd like to look at two recent career options I have learned about. Researching job opportunities is something I generally do and find fulfilling. In this case, I was much interested by two particular opportunities. At CSIS (Canadian Security and Intelligence Service), there is a posting for <a href=" Librarian to work in the Intelligence Assessment Branch (salary range: $67,660 to $82,340 per year Canadian) and at the GCHQ (British: Government Communications Head Quarters), there is a posting for <a href=" Intelligence Specialist (£24,456 - £27,546). Both of these positions strike me as quite interesting, I must say.

Of the two, I have a better chance of obtaining the British position since it appears to be open to new graduates to a greater degree than the Canadian position. I presume that I would be barred from blogging about librarian work in the intelligence field, but I think other people out there should know that there are opportunities in this field.2008/11/librarians-for-intelligence-service.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-8774826618157005009Mon, 24 Nov 2008 04:30:00 +00002008-11-24T03:26:12.109-05:00Reflecting on the Archivist 2.0 ManifestoI don't think I've previously commented on <a href=" Archivist 2.0 manifesto. The manifesto has 17 points and it is partly inspired by the American Libraries article “A Manifesto for Our Times," by Laura B. Cohen which explored similar issues.

From my perspective, I think there are a few points that are particularly interesting.

I will educate myself about the information culture of my users and look for ways to incorporate what I learn into the services my archives provides.

Researching users has been an interest of mine for quite some time. I would love to get paid (or just have it as one of my major job duties) to do user research and stay informed about new trends in the information culture. Arguably, I make the effort to stay informed anyhow though.

# I will take an experimental approach to change and be willing to make mistakes.

The development of professional standards like RAD or AACR2 encourage a culture of perfection, but I'm fine to leave that behind. I would like to see archives embrace a culture of pilot projects - including allowing staff time to think about new approaches.

# I will not wait until something is perfect before I release it, and I’ll modify it based on user feedback.

This has the vital benefit of bending and reshaping services to meet user needs.

# I will be willing to go where users are, both online and in physical spaces, to practice my profession.

Archivists really need to hear this. But let's be thoughtful too. Does it make sense to establish a presence in the World of Warcraft game? I know that a group of scientists recently held a research meeting in that environment (here's the amusing titled Science article: <a href=" Monsters for Science). What about social networking websites like Facebook or MySpace?

# I will create open Web sites that allow users to join with archivists to contribute content in order to enhance their learning experience and provide assistance to their peers.

I want this badly but whenever I've mentioned to people, there seems to be quite a bit of resistance. From those conversations, I think there is a technical solution that addresses everybody's concerns. Make user generated content modular (i.e. you can use it or toggle it off); that way, users who want to use the official, "plain" finding aids or database can still have that

# I will lobby for an open catalog that provides personalized, interactive features that users expect in online information environments.

This strikes me as interesting idea but I think it would be difficult to design. Perhaps archives could ask Amazon.com for help?

# I will encourage professional blogging in my archives.

Yes, yes, and yes. Blogging should remain optional, of course (can you imagine mandatory blogging? Ugh!). The key to this point is only partly about the technology. The best blogs have a real persona powering them and that sense of connection is a great deal of the reason that keeps me coming back to blogs. I can't think of any Canadian institutions where professionals directly blog about their institutions, but last week I read about <a href=" senior person blogging at the Federal Reserve (aka the US Central Bank, more or less) in the United States. If that kind of organization has/allows professional blogging, then information organizations should at lest be open (if not outright encouraging) of the notion.2008/11/reflecting-on-archivist-20.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-6247186460032480357Mon, 24 Nov 2008 04:30:00 +00002008-11-23T23:30:53.556-05:002008/11/blog-post.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-5704325626274529384Sun, 23 Nov 2008 18:53:00 +00002008-11-23T14:04:02.328-05:00library and archives canadaLibrary and Archives Canada's new survey<a href=" and Archives Canada has launched <a href=" new survey to help them design their future programs. For example, I was recently talking to some fellow graduate students in my program about developing some kind of archive to preserve some of the interesting projects that students create every year. The purpose of such an archive is essentially knowledge management: by sharing experiences, the archive helps students better design and benefit from practicum opportunities. There are several other examples I could refer to, such as managing email (one area where I need to become more systematic).

It occurs to me that this kind of heightened more personal use of information skills could also be helpful in the workplace. Rather than vaguely referring to productivity and the hypothetical value of a well designed intranet system, one could present a narrative of personal success. Something like, "Ah, before I adopted a knowledge management system in my group, most of the gains made by short term staff were being lost and training for new staff took 20 hours. Now training time is down to 5 hours and stress levels in the office are much lower."2008/11/demonstrating-information-skills.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1407706060840451428.post-7236302181996300275Mon, 17 Nov 2008 22:35:00 +00002008-11-17T17:48:10.946-05:00professional developmentDecisions, Decisions...Both this week and the first week of December, I have to make a decision that's a bit tricky. I think I may ultimately go for the professional event as the classes meet multiple times and it happens that those particular classes are a bit flexible.2008/11/decisions-decisions.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Accidental Archivist)0

Healthy choices are better than unhealthy ones, but they’re not a guarantee for a problem-free life. Growing up, healthy choices weren’t important to me. I never gave a second thought to healthy eating or exercise. And I never considered the safety (or hazards) of products. Quite naively, I thought that because I lived in First World America, my products and food all were safe — and good for me. When I realized this was not the case — and I had spent a lifetime consuming unhealthy things — I wanted to change for the better. I started reading labels. I stopped buying toxic products, like cosmetics made with parabens or cleaning supplies made with triclosan. I cut out processed food and tried to buy as much organic food as possible. With every healthy choice, I felt confident that I could benefit the health of my family members. If we just continued pursuing a healthy life, we could forget about health problems. Except that life is not like that. One morning, when my husband and I woke up and thought our neighbor had started fracking directly behind our house (praise God, he hadn’t), I realized what very little control I have over my family’s health. Sure, healthy choices are better than unhealthy ones. They may help us prevent certain problems. But they’re not a guarantee for a problem-free life. Other factors in this broken world plague our best attempts. Someone else’s poor choices might directly affect you. Your own unhealthy past might create a problem. Genetic issues may be stacked against you. Or life just happens. Healthy choices are good. They’re better than unhealthy ones. But healthy choices don’t guarantee health. Insect repellents are necessary, but safe choices are hard to find. Instead of synthetic bug sprays, I like all-natural repellents. Disclosure: This post is brought to you by Butterbean Organics. I still remember crawling into an orange pup tent as a child, excited for my first campout in my parents’ wooded backyard. I can hear the crickets and tree frogs in my memories … and smell the overpowering scents of a DEET-based mosquito spray. It was hard to get to sleep, partially because of the different sounds right outside my tent, but also because of the horrid fragrance. I have to believe the synthetic deep woods repellent couldn’t be too great for my health. Granted, insect repellents are necessary: they help keep mosquitoes and ticks away. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ticks infect more than 30,000 Americans with Lyme disease each year and mosquitoes infect more than 2,000 Americans with West Nile virus. The trouble with insect repellents, though, is that completely safe choices are hard to find. You want to make sure to use an effective product to keep bugs away. But at the same time, you don’t want to compromise safe standards. In 2013, consumer watchdog organization the Environmental Working Group described this challenge: The bad news: there’s no sure, completely safe way to prevent bug bites. All bug repellents have pros and cons. The good news: some repellents are effective and relatively low in toxicity – provided you take precautions when using them, particularly on children. The surprising news: among the four repellent chemicals EWG found to be top picks is DEET, which is widely used but much maligned. DEET’s safety profile is better than many people assume. Its effectiveness at preventing bites is approached by only a few other repellent ingredients. DEET isn’t a perfect choice nor the only choice. But weighed against the consequences of Lyme disease and West Nile virus, we believe it is a reasonable one. What if there’s another alternative? Personally, I hate using synthetic products if a natural product is effective. In my own experience, I prefer to use insect repellents made out of essential oil blends … or even by making my own potent repellent with fresh basil leaves and hot water. I know essential oils and certain plants repel mosquitoes. But sometimes, when I’m rushing around in the middle of summer fun, I just don’t feel like making my own repellent. (Even if I have all the ingredients. What can I say? Just because I can DIY doesn’t mean that I always do.) I like when concerned companies use the same products I would choose to use … and then create a great product. Like Butterbean Organics. Started by a mama of five children, Butterbean Organics is a family-run company that creates and sells Bug-A-Boo bug spray and sunscreens made with safe and healthy ingredients. Butterbean Organics’ Bug-A-Boo Spray includes: Neem oil – An ancient, non-toxic herbal oil used to repel mosquitoes. (The EPA approved cold-pressed Neem oil as a mosquito repellent in 2010; Butterbean Organics uses organic, cold-pressed Neem oil.) Neem oil is known to have antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antiviral properties. Castor oil – Known for natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Ceylon citronella oil – All-natural insect repellent. Cedarwood oil – Can be used as an antiseptic, astringent, diuretic, expectorant, fungicidal, and insecticidal substance. Lemongrass oil – Known as an insect repellent. Peppermint oil – Popular for analagesic, antifungal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antiviral properties. Rosemary oil – Used as an antioxidant. White vinegar – Useful as an antiseptic, a help with circulation, and a great pH regulator. Witch hazel – Used as a carrier for the oil combination, witch hazel also has anti-inflammatory properties. With this group of effective, natural ingredients, there’s no need to worry about exposing yourself to hazardous synthetic sprays. Butterbean Organics is natural, safe, effective – and their products are recommended by the Environmental Working Group and Cool Mom Picks. You can buy your own Bug-A-Boo bug spray online or at certain U.S. retailers. After a life of eating processed food, I was sure I couldn’t cook real food. Was I wrong!! I’ve found it’s easy and affordable to cook real food. Growing up, I never helped much in the kitchen. Oh, I’d look forward to baking Christmas cookies with my mom every December, and I’d make my own macaroni and cheese from a box for summertime lunches … but that was it. Once I graduated from college and moved far away from my family, I needed to figure out cooking on my own. Cooking for one isn’t that easy – I never felt the desire to spend a lot of time creating a fantastic meal for just myself. And I didn’t want to eat leftovers for days and days afterward. Small and simple was key. To figure out how to cook, I scoured cookbooks and created recipes shared from my mom and aunts. Inevitably, I’d end up trying to make recipes found on the boxes of the processed food I bought. When I eventually got married, I continued my cooking habits. Then I discovered Food Network. My husband and I became rather addicted to several of the network’s shows, taking mental notes of the flavor combinations and cooking techniques the chefs used. It didn’t matter if it was “Chopped,” “Iron Chef America” or “Next Food Network Star” – when someone was cooking, I paid attention. Attempting real food recipes I liked baking from scratch and loved the taste compared to boxed baking mixes. So eventually I tried cooking from scratch. I experimented with some of the recipes I had watched on TV – and they were delicious. Surprisingly, cooking with real food wasn’t difficult. It was fun, relaxing, and I loved the taste. My days of whipping together a dinner casserole of boneless skinless chicken breasts, a box of stuffing, can of orange juice concentrate and brown sugar were over. I stopped buying boxes and cans of processed food and started buying real food. Much to my delight, I didn’t notice a huge change in my grocery bill. I had stocked my pantry with nutritious food, and I had learned to cook with it so I could create a variety of delicious and nourishing meals. After cooking real food for the past nine years, I’ve learned that it’s a lot easier and affordable than I ever imagined. Switching to a real food diet takes a little patience and willingness to experiment and learn. But the reward is food that tastes like food – because it IS food. Have you always cooked real food? What has your real food learning curve been like? What resources do you like to use? // The post The Day I Learned I Could Cook Real Food appeared first on Accidentally Green. /the-day-i-learned-i-could-cook-real-food/feed/ 1 The Night I Discovered Thrift Stores /the-night-i-discovered-thrift-stores/ /the-night-i-discovered-thrift-stores/#comments Mon, 29 Jun 2015 04:01:51 +0000 /?p=10921 For the original post, visit Accidentally Green - Making Healthy Decisions That Honor God and Happen to Help the Environment. After a lifetime of bargain shopping without thrift stores, my shopping changed once I tried thrift stores. I appreciate how it’s affordable to repurpose quality clothing! Growing up, I was taught to be a good bargain shopper – to this day, I still gravitate toward sales racks and clearance sections. (Why spend extra money if you don’t have to?) Yet I never stepped foot in a thrift store. Ever. I was happy with my discount store deals, but when I got pregnant in 2007, I knew there was no way I’d be able to splurge on a complete maternity wardrobe for work and home, especially when I was planning to become a stay-at-home mom and needed to save money. Friends had been helpful when they passed along their maternity hand-me-downs, but I had a variety of sizes and styles. When I finally outgrew my pre-pregnancy clothes and my pants were bursting at the seams, I knew I needed a thrifty solution. I knew I needed to try thrift stores. I walked in to my local thrift store with a $20 bill and no idea what to expect. I walked out with a bulging bag filled with name-brand maternity clothes and a new favorite store. A thrifty switch Ever since that night, I’ve gone to plenty of thrift stores – I’ve even searched out highly recommended ones on vacation. Once my babies were born and I was introduced to a life of spit up on my clothes, I loved refreshing my wardrobe with ultra-affordable used clothes. It was a relief to not worry about staining a brand new outfit. My thrifty habit has stuck with me as my children have grown, and I buy most of my clothes and my children’s clothing at resale shops. I’ve noticed that I can find high-quality, name brand clothing for well under $10 with just a few tricks: Visit thrift stores in affluent neighborhoods. Before you go to the store, have an idea of what you’d like to shop for. What clothing do you truly need? Look for stains. Look for missing buttons. Look for missing accessories like belts. Try every zipper to see if they work. Check the care instructions. (I choose to not buy dry clean only items.) If the thrift store has a dressing room, try on your items before buying. Watch for sale tags and markdowns, if you’re hoping for big deals. While I stick to searching for bargains at a few favorite stores, I also really like using referral credits at the online thrift store ThredUP. I like the way my family’s clothing budget stretches, thanks to thrift stores. Plus, I love the way I can recycle and reuse someone else’s clothing. I admit that I skip exercising because I automatically remember that I hated gym class. But I need to practice my mental fitness and just do it. My health is too important not to fight to stay fit. I never thought much about physical activity when I was a child. I liked to play – and once I started school, recess and gym class were fun enough. I preferred other “specials” like art and music, but I don’t remember much about gym class – except for playing with parachutes and having scooter races a couple of weeks out of the school year. When I started third grade, though, we had a new gym teacher who brought a new approach to gym class. We actually started learning something about physical activity. At the time, I didn’t realize that I wasn’t gifted in physical ability – but I started to discover it very quickly. Suddenly, gym class wasn’t just a bunch of fun and games. It turned into competition. And instead of just having fun and getting moving, we were tested on our ability – and inability. Gym class morphed into a physical sort of math class for me: I desperately wanted to perform, but struggled miserably. Instead of embracing the struggle and working harder, I began to loathe gym class (and math class). I didn’t care if I was one of the last ones picked for kickball, because I absolutely hated the game. And what was the fun of bowling if I couldn’t even figure out how to score it, for pete’s sake? For the rest of my elementary, middle and high school experience, I dreaded gym class. Physical activity was completely unappealing to me. Sadly, I’m still prone to keep that same kind of attitude toward physical activity – 30 years after my first negative experience. Yet the truth of the matter is this: I do really, really enjoy certain kinds of physical activity. I love to dance. (College-level physical education electives were fantastic!!) I like to go on walks. I like aerobic activity. I really, really enjoy strength training. And I love the way I feel after I’m in a good physical activity routine. The trouble is this: when my adult life is busy, the first thing to go always is physical activity. Not because I don’t want to do it, and not because I don’t think it’s important – because I do. But when I am in busy mode, I skip on exercise because I automatically remember that I hated gym class. I admit that it is completely idiotic to revert to an elementary school disdain for physical activity. Yet it’s what I naturally do. This realization has helped me understand that for some people, there may be deeper issues that hinder physical activity or healthy eating. I also understand that when I’m tempted to skip exercise because I don’t think I like it, I need to practice my mental fitness and just do it. My health is too important not to fight to stay fit. Ready to start middle school, I was 12 years old when I was allowed to start wearing cosmetics. My mom took me to the drugstore and treated me to a pastel blue Caboodles container and way too many Cover Girl products – concealer, foundation, blush, eye shadow, pressed powder, and Lip Slickers lip gloss. I just had muted colors (which was fairly miraculous for the late ’80s!) so my makeup looked fairly natural. But I still had the cosmetics – and I wore them each and every school day. That day’s purchase started my lifelong cosmetics habit. Unless I’m sick or just working around the house at home, I typically wear makeup. I still only use muted colors so my makeup looks natural. And over the years, I’ve made changes – the foundation, concealer and powder is long gone, but I’ve added eyeliner and mascara. I also stayed loyal to drugstore brands, using coupons to help replenish my supply. Until one August Saturday in 2007. Time for a change After reading Stacy Malkan’s book, “Not Just a Pretty Face,” I was shocked and disgusted that all of the cosmetics I had used for 20 years were filled with toxins. Had I really exposed myself day after day to such harmful ingredients? I experimented with mineral cosmetics and was pleased with them, but I put my old faithful (and toxic) products in my Caboodles and tucked it away in my linen closet – just in case. Just in case of what, I don’t know. Just in case I had a makeup emergency? Just in case my cheapskate tendencies forced me to use up the toxic products because I bought them? On that particular Saturday, I decided to forget about just in case. If I was serious about a healthy lifestyle, I needed to get rid of what I knew was unhealthy. So I dug out every single cosmetic – new and old – that was filled with toxic, synthetic ingredients, and I threw them in a little plastic trash can. I kept the trash can filled with the products for a couple months, adding to it whenever I came across another toxic product in my home. Finally, after the trash can was full and my healthy approach to beauty products had become routine, I emptied my trash can into the garbage. (And no – at that point I didn’t even consider recycling the containers. I just wanted everything out of my home.) Learning a lesson I might have hesitated – a lot – when making the switch to safe cosmetics. But I did it. In the process, I learned that sometimes I have to forget about my frugal tendencies. Living cheaply doesn’t necessarily benefit my health. I also learned that I can successfully take a jump into healthy lifestyle choices. They may be different than the synthetic products I used to use, but they are effective, easy to use – and safe. You can find the same success. You might prefer baby steps, or you might need to make a huge change to jumpstart a healthy lifestyle. Do whatever works best for you. You’ll appreciate living healthier. Is it easier for you to make baby steps or huge changes? What healthy cosmetics do you prefer to use?
