This is not something you would often hear anybody say outright—if at all. That would be racist, and we live in a time when even devout racists get offended if you actually call them “racist.” The closest we tend to get to such utterances is the coded intimations of the Newt Gingriches and Rick Santorums of the world talking about how blacks prefer welfare to actual work. (If that were so, Uncle Sam owes me over 25 years of backpay.)

Yet, the message of black inferiority is still something being transmitted today. Like air, water, and high-fructose corn syrup, it simply permeates the culture. We take no more notice of it than we do inhaling the carbon-monoxide air of our car-driven country.

Television news constantly feeds us reports of black criminality, black underachievement, black addiction. Our entertainment industry gives us a steady diet of black depravity, shoveling pimps and hustlers and playas and thugs down our throats. We can watch them on our televisions, in our movies; listen to them on our radios, iPods, and smart phones; we can read about them on our Kindles and Nooks and even—heaven forbid—actual books and thrill to their tales of violence, greed, and penicillin-resistant promiscuity.

Even science gets into the act. Phrenology may be dead, but so-called studies and statistics thrive. They tell us black kids can’t keep up academically. Drugs consume the ghetto. Jails are overflowing with black misery. Over 60 percent of black men without a high school diploma will wind up in prison. Some even say there are more black men in prison today than were enslaved in 1850. On top of all that, black men are even the least hirable demographic in these here post-racial United States.

Hell, with all these problems, no wonder we are constantly assaulted by those images I mentioned earlier. That we are just as likely to see black thuggery on our TV screens as we were the token black friend in a ‘90s sitcom (whatever happened to those?). That hip-pop (what I like to call ironically “commercial” rap) still pounds us with talk of pimping, hustling, dealing, murdering, and misogynating. That 80 percent of the books published for, by, and/or about blacks is urban or “ghetto” literature. After all, all these portrayals reflect the culture, mirror the reality of life in African-America.

Except, of course, they don’t.

As has been noted, 80 percent of African-American books published today are what some call ghetto lit. One would think that a corresponding percentage of black folk actually live in the ghetto. Well ... according to the 2010 Census, only 30 percent of African-Americans today live in majority-minority neighborhoods.

Educationally, the good folks at Freakanomics (and other studies back them up on this) have found that achievement is not race-based—but class-based. Middle- and upper-class blacks score just as well as any other child of their socioeconomic background no matter their race. Conversely, poor kids of all races score equally poorly. Studies have also found that the rates of triflinity (n. the act of being or the moral structure that leads one to actually be triflin’) are the same across the races.

On the crime front, data have shown that rates of criminality between whites and blacks are also the same. Black men make up about 40.2 percent of the prison population with roughly 846,000 of us in the system, and, in 2003, the Bureau of Justice Statistics predicted that 32 percent of black men born in 2001 will be spending time in prison (I guess the Justice Department had just unrolled their 30-year business plan, or something). Still, out of a population of some 18 million black males, 846,000 is hardly representative. And, with all due respect to Ice Cube, there may be more niggers in the pen than in college (I can’t particularly speak on that one), but there are actually more black men in college (919,000) than in prison. And all due respect to Dr. Michelle Alexander, who claimed that there are more black men in prison today than were enslaved in 1850; there were only about 1.8 million black men in America in 1850. To compare the black population of that time with today’s, which is 10 times larger, is a bit disingenuous. Less than five percent of black men are imprisoned today. In 1850, less than five percent of black men were free.

Now, I’m not saying that everything in our black communities is honky-dory and that we’re living in the Days of Ripple and Roses. What I am saying is that we African-Americans continue to be treated by the dominant culture (as well as our own) as a monolithic whole and that treatment is overwhelmingly negative.

How can 80 percent of our books be ghetto lit when only 30 percent of us live in majority-minority neighborhoods—ghetto or otherwise? How can so much of our music celebrate thugging, pimping, robbing, and stealing, when such a small percentage of us live such a life?

Now, I’m a satirist. I write novels. I understand the role of fantasy in entertainment. I personally do not get into “conscious” vs. “unconscious” (or whatever the term), “positive” vs. “negative” debates. Life’s more complicated than that. Besides, a good story needs both heroes and villains. A really good story muddies up the distinction. But, as a writer, I also respect the image. I believe that images have power, can move people, and, if repeated enough, affect the way people think.

Does the persistent image of black inferiority have power? Judge for yourself. It has power enough to allow Gingrich and Santorum to say what they did and be taken seriously. In some quarters, people believed Limbaugh when he suggested Obama got into Harvard due to affirmative action.

As stated before, black men are the least hirable demographic. When an employer sees a “black” name on a resumé or application, do thoughts of criminal behavior, drug abuse, and/or intellectual inferiority dance like watermelons through their heads? Do they subconsciously check their wallets or purses when that black applicant walks through the door? Wonder if they speak Jive? When they look at that applicant’s credentials, do they think, “Affirmative action”?

Recently, the National Education Policy Center found that, though black and white school kids are equally trifling, 28 percent of African-American middle school boys are suspended or expelled as opposed to only 10 percent of their white counterparts. This is apparently due to the discretionary behavior of the disciplining adults and not the individual child’s actual offense. Could that disciplinarian be looking at that little black boy and be thinking of his future thuggery? That that boy isn’t going to amount to anything, anyway, and they might as well nip whatever it is in the bud?

From what I understand, the “justice” system treats black teens much the same way. After all, blacks and whites commit the same rates of crimes. Yet, black men are six and a half times more likely to see jail time than any white man ever would. What could be going through the arresting officers’ minds? The judges’? The jailers’? Could it be the same thing that passed Dr. Walter Quijano’s lips when he testified in the Duane Buck trial that black men possess a little known gene called “future dangerousness”? (It’s apparently found in the melanin.)

Is the disproportionately punative treatment black men receive in this country due to the fact that T.I. and Lil Wayne rap? Of course not. Should it? Well ... there is a price to pay for those two’s existences. But that is artistic.

Seriously though, ever since the first master complained about the first nigra slave stealing his chickens, African-Americans have been dealing with negative portrayals of themselves. And those negative images have often been racist in nature and used to reinforce and justify African-Americans’ oppression and dehumanization. Do these images serve the same function today? I would be the last one to say that. As I said, today, even the Grand Wizard of Aryan Nation United States (A.N.U.S.) would be screaming, “Who you callin’ ‘racist,’ nigger?!” So, I’ll leave that up to you.

Meanwhile, as a satirist, it is up to me to examine those images, poke and prod them, take my incisive “wit” and twisted “humor” and slap them up, flip them, and rub them down, to slice them open and start pulling until the chitlins come pouring out into the light of day. That is why I wrote Koontown Killing Kaper with all its offensive language, grotesque imagery, and absurd humor. ‘Cause, if you ask me (and Lord knows, you didn’t) today’s pimp, gangsta, playa who’s movin’ weight, bodyin’ niggas, and runnin’ this here pimp game is about as representative of today’s African-Americans as the happy coon on the plantation just a-pickin’ and a-grinnin’ on his banjo and doin’ the cake walk and singin’ his Africanized Irish ballads fo’ massa was representative of the dusky Ethiopians of the 1850s. And, if I can make fun of those Amos ‘N’ Andy portrayals of yesteryear, I most definitely need to make fun of their modern equivalent. ‘Cause boy, to tell de troof, there do be times when I’se utterly and completely regusted.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="200" />

2012/01/why-i-wrote-koontown.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Bill Campbell)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3373459717177411214.post-5939772168399734253Thu, 05 Jan 2012 14:34:00 +00002012-01-05T06:34:11.327-08:00choppy chop-e soundkoontown killing kapertomorrow/yesterdayKoontown Killing Kaper on Kindle!!!That's right. I'd Whip Dat Ass<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />Funny, I often feel like I'm chained to the internet. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Goodreads, Podomatic, etc., etc., etc. I think there's even a Myspace page out there somewhere with my name on it. Yet, I know I'm not nearly as connected as a lot of you out there. And, to be completely honest, I ignore most of the stuff I'm apparently connected to. There are too many internet controversies, curiosities, and sensations that I've never even heard of or paid attention to.

It took me an e-ternity (sorry, couldn't help it) before I heard of this whole Amber Cole debacle. And, once I found out, I promptly tried to ignore it. After all, as the father of a four-year-old black girl, why the hell would I want to hear about a 14-year-old black girl going down on some boy, allowing herself to be videotaped, and then having that video going viral. Why would I want to put myself in that girl's father's place? And I thought Laurence Fishburn had it bad.

Yet today, something on my Twitter timeline did catch my attention. Apparently, some brother, Jimi Izrael (apparently he's got a little fame to him) actually did imagine that he was Amber Cole's father and posted his imaginings on <a href=";. As I said, I ain't goin' there. That place is too dark, too depressing to even contemplate. However, something that Jimi wrote did catch my eye:

I am angry with those boys. But I knew those boys. Those boys were my friends. I grew up with those boys, hung out with those boys.

While I refuse to imagine my being Amber Cole's daddy, but I can definitely imagine being those boys' father. And I gotta tell you, there is absolutely no way in hell I'd let them off as easily as Mr. Izrael does. Not even close.

Now, I wish I were a better person. I wish I could sit my boy down, have that respectable Bill Cosby moment full of dignity, calm righteous indignation, and sagacious life lessons that would put the boy on the right path. And end it with a quiet chuckle and the reassuring epiphany that lets me know that my boy has learned his lesson. I wish I could sit calmly in my funky sweater and give the child a steady diet of Feminist Father red meat (how would he like it if somebody had done that to his sister or his mother or to him) to let him know that he should never encourage, entertain the prospect, or be involved in the degradation of a female--or anyone, for that matter.

But in all honesty, it wouldn't go like that. I wouldn't be calm, there'd be nothing quiet about my righteous indignation, and we wouldn't be performing a skit to a Ray Charles song. In fact, you could be damned sure that that Feminist Father red meat would actually turn into a "white meat" moment--'cause that's exactly what I'd be whipping my boy's ass down to. Hell, it'd be worse than that. I'd be whipping that boy until his corpuscles turned purple. In fact, you'd end up seeing my face in the Guinness Book of World Records under Ass-Whippin'.

I think the scene would go something like this:

"Mutha...!" Whap! "What the...!" Whap! "...that girl and...!" Whap! Whap! "...and then you...!" Whap! "Bill, no!!!" Whap! Whap! Whap! "What were you...!" Whap!!!

I'd be whipping that boy for videoing that girl. Whipping him for having another boy there to video her. Whipping him for even thinking it was appropriate. Whipping him for posting the damned thing. For even thinking of posting it. For Plessy v. Ferguson and the Dred Scott decision. For Roethlisberger's two interceptions in that last Super Bowl.

"Yes! 911!" Whap! Whap! "...if you ever ... !!!" Whap! "My babyyyyyy!!!!" Whap! Whap! "Mr. Campbell, please come with us." Whap! "The boy's coming with me." Whap! "By all means, please do, sir." Whap! Whap! Whap! and Whap!

Oh yeah. I'd be working my whipping arm until the judge handed down my sentence. Then I'd pause, plea for the boy to be tried as an adult, get us placed in the same cell, and then whip him for 5-20 years--dependent upon good behavior, of course.

All (semi) joking aside. I am actually quite ambivalent about corporal punishment. I am neither for it nor against it. I like many of my brethren had received ass whuppins growing up. But, in my case, they were extremely rare and usually for spectacular screw-ups (like, when I was 12 and went to an arcade without permission and fell asleep only to awaken to find out that the entire town and three police jurisdictions were combing the entire area for my snoring butt--boy I got lit up that night). So, I don't have any traumatic associations with corporal punishment, don't harbor any resentment for the times I've suffered under its belt, and don't feel that I'd been abused. And while I've never hit my child nor can imagine ever doing so, I will never rule out the possibility.

And, in all honesty, if either one of those boys were my child, you would have to call protective services on me.

Amber Cole, like so many other females in her position, has become a bit of a celebrity. We have scrutinized and judged her actions ad infinitum. We are judging all girls and women by this poor child's actions. Yet, where are the boys? Why aren't they just as infamous as this girl? Why don't we even know their names?

Incidents like this will continue to happen until we teach all our children dignity. Until boys suffer the same, harsh scrutiny over their sexual conduct as girls do. That respect, dignity, and degradation are a two-way street. If one is supposed to be graced by respect, one must treat everybody in every situation with respect.

But until that happens, until true equality is attained by all, this father would whip both those boys' asses.2011/10/for-record-id-whip-dat-ass.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Bill Campbell)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3373459717177411214.post-1764692887356068050Mon, 03 Oct 2011 18:56:00 +00002011-10-03T11:58:08.669-07:00insanityThe Harrowing Tale of America's First "Crazy Negro"
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="; width="252" />
Lifted from Ira Berlin's Slaves without Masters. Hughes, a white schoolmaster, and opened a night school for free Negroes and slaves who had the consent of their master. Classes began at dusk and ran until nine-thirty, and Hughes taught “the English language grammatically, Writing, Arithmetic, Geography, Astronomy, &c. &c.” for a fee of about $1.25 per month. The results were most promising. The school opened with twenty-five pupils, and McPherson noted that “from frequent application since, ‘tis expected the number will shortly be doubled.” McPherson was so pleased with his initial success that he publicly boasted of the school in the Richmond Argus, and recommended “to the people of colour throughout the United States (who do not have it in their power to attend day schools) to establish similar institutions in their neighborhoods.” Excited over the new possibilities, he hoped “that everyone who loves his Country, and has it in his power will generously further and foster every institution of the kind that may be established throughout this happy Union.”

Richmond whites were less enthusiastic. Within days after McPherson’s notice appeared, several leading citizens confronted Samuel Pleasants, the editor of the Argus, and demanded that the advertisement be withdrawn. “They deem it,” Pleasants reported, “impolitic and highly improper that such an institution should exist in this City.” Pleasants disagreed, but dutifully yielded to public pressure. Herbert Hughes, the white schoolteacher, was made of sterner stuff. He took space in the Argus, defended the school, and attacked the idea that it was impolitic to educate Negroes as Rousseauistic sophistry. Reiterating his support of the school, Hughes declared “without Education in some degree they are in a state of bastard civilization,” and he pledged to teach until authorities closed the school.

That apparently was not long in coming, for soon after Hughes made his appeal, Richmond officials summoned McPherson to court to show why his school should not be declared a nuisance. The case was delayed, but the police continued to harass McPherson and probably drove Hughes out of town. Despite the greater threat implicit in the police action, in April, when the court again delayed his case, McPherson advertised his desire to establish “a seminary of learning of the arts and sciences” as soon as he could find a “proper tutor.” But before he could act, the police again jailed McPherson and shipped him to the Williamsburg Lunatic Asylum. McPherson doubtless had “mad” religious delusions, but these had not prevented him from functioning for years in a manner acceptable to Richmond whites: only when he established his school was he thrown into the madhouse. His lesson was obvious: any black man who would attempt to found a s

So many are not achieving anywhere near their potential simply because they are running on generic programs that were fed in when we were a lot younger. In 1987 the system of Human Design was born and has continued to expand ever since. Jon has worked with Human design for over 25 years now and helps interpret the sometimes-complex language into easy-to-understand bite size bits. Imagine finding your own personal instruction manual, a guide to how to operate and get the most from your life, imagine understanding family members, partners, work colleagues and helping support them in being the best they can be. In this talk Jon will explain what the Bodygraph Chart means and how to interpret yours, if you decide to request one. Jon will also be referencing some designs for some of today’s world players like Donald Trump, Elon Musk and some of the royal family. See how the designs are all different and how they interlock. If you would like to get a lot out of the evening, please let Jon have your details (name together with date, time and place of birth) and he will produce your own personal chart and bring it to the meeting for you to have. If you are unsure of your exact time of birth, then points like being born in the middle of the night or just in time for lunch helps narrow things down a bit. Jon will need this information no later than a week before the meeting is due to take place (by the 15th September). Please send these details directly to Jon at jcritoph@btinternet.com and add ‘Truthjuice Birmingham’ in the subject line. You of course may not be ready to do this just yet so he will have charts of many famous people you can use to ground the information he will talk about and see how it applies to them. Maybe you would just like to come along and soak up the information and that will be fine too Jon’s Bio Jon started life as an electronics engineer but soon realized this was not his calling and transferred across into the corporate world of sales and marketing and enjoyed nearly 2 decades of success before a chance meeting led him to leave the corporate world and head into the world of complementary therapy and worked for a UK based therapy association for over a decade touring the countryside giving talks and running workshops whilst supporting an amazing Local Support Group Network. Jon now works at his own business Trans4mational Change helping people reach their full potential in whatever way he can. He is married and has a young daughter whom he helps educate and support having worked with her Human Design from Day 1. Jon also offers workshops where you can delve deeper into your own design. He does 1-2-1 readings either face to face (he lives near Malvern) or over the internet. But what really happened inside the military’s classified Star Gate program, and where is the practice heading today? This presentation journeys from ancient intuitive traditions to cold war military research and modern scientific labs. Through historical records and personal accounts, we will separate myth from method. Come challenge your understanding of human perception and decide for yourself what remote viewing means for the future of consciousness. Kay Ivey’s office said Monday it is not aware of any Afghan refugees coming to Alabama as tens of thousands flee that country, Reports of hectic and desperate scenes from Kabul’s airport continue to emerge after the Taliban’s rapid takeover of the city last week. In the U.S., political divisions have risen on how to handle the wave of Afghan refugees. Some congressional Republicans and Republican governors have stated their willingness to accept refugees into their states, while other conservative voices have said they have security concerns about the rapid increase in refugees or that they are worried about “chain migration.” The U.S. State Department has approved 34,500 Special Immigrant Visas, or SIVs, for Afghans who have assisted the U.S. military, but the process has been slow, The Washington Post reported. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville, along with 15 other Republican senators, sent a letter to President Biden urging him to act quickly to evacuate all “American citizens and all eligible Afghan partners” from Afghanistan. Rep. Mo Brooks, R-Huntsville, and Rep. Barry Moore, R-Enterprise, were the only members of Alabama’s delegation to vote against the Averting Loss of Life and Injury by Expediting SIVs Act, or ALLIES Act, which is meant to speed up the visa application process for Afghan citizens, USA Today reported. Brooks told CBS 42 that he is against extending the visas because he is concerned about how it could hinder fighting back against the Taliban. “Please understand that if you take from Afghanistan the people who believe in liberty and freedom, then you are empowering the Taliban to do exactly what has happened,” Brooks said. “The leadership has collapsed in Afghanistan because the leadership has fled.” Ivey’s office would not say on Monday if she is open to Afghan refugees coming into the state, but she did release a statement last week saying she supports those who have served the U.S. in military operations in Afghanistan. “I support every man and woman who has served in our military, the Alabama National Guard and the numerous diplomatic posts,” Ivey said. “They all served as a force of good in the world. In the days ahead, let’s pray for our country, the men and women left behind and the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.” Alabama has had a complicated past with helping refugees. Former Gov. Robert Bentley tried suing the federal government in 2016 in order to block Syrian refugees from entering the state, saying Alabama wasn’t properly consulted in the refugee placement process. Ivey dropped the appeal of the suit in 2017, citing then-President Donald Trump’s attempted executive order surrounding immigration, The Associated Press reported. Alabama has historically ranked low in the nation for the number of refugees resettled in the state. According to the U.S. State Department’s fiscal year 2021 report on refugee admissions, Alabama admitted 22 refugees. The post Afghan Refugees Not Expected Yet in Alabama, Gov. "Americans are more vulnerable today than they have been in 20 years because of what is going on in Afghanistan right now,” Spann said Monday in his real estate office on the edge of downtown Winfield, not far from a memorial park that is named after his son, a former Marine and CIA officer who was killed during an uprising of Taliban prisoners at the Qala-i-Jangi fortress near the northern Afghan city of Mazir-i-Sharif on Nov. 15, 2001. Mike Spann was the first American to die in the U.S. response to the Sept. 11, 2011 ,terrorist attacks on the U.S. mainland. Mike Spann was the first American to die in the U.S. response to the Sept. 11, 2011 ,terrorist attacks on the U.S. mainland. A section of highway in the Winfield area bears his name and, for now, so does a monument at the site of his death in Afghanistan. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Johnny Spann, now 73, has been following with dismay the news of the collapse of the Afghan government and military in the face of Taliban conquests throughout the country, and watching televised scenes of chaos involving fleeing civilians at the airport serving the Afghan capital city of Kabul. He does not claim to know everything about the situation, but, reflecting the view of analysts, former diplomats and veterans who have served there, he cannot see why the U.S. could not have kept a supportive presence there, with some troops, diplomats and intelligence officers, just as it has kept troops in South Korea for decades to ensure stability on the Korean peninsula. Johnny Spann talks Monday about the situation in Afghanistan, where his son was killed in 2001. Source: Tom Gordon The Biden administration had announced earlier this year its intention to withdraw all U.S. troops -– estimated in April at about 2,500 – by Sept. 11, the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that were planned by Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda in a safe haven in what was then Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. The Trump administration had planned to pull out U.S. forces by May 1. Asked what his son might be thinking about what has happened in the last few weeks, Spann recalled what he learned Mike had told his oldest daughter Alison before he headed out on the mission that would take his life. “He said, ‘Alison, people like me have to go do the things we do so that you can keep your freedom, so you can go out and play in the playground, you can go to school, you can go to church … and you can do the things you can do. We got to fight ‘em over there.’” Johnny Spann fears that history may repeat itself — not if the Taliban imposes its harsh Islamic rule upon Afghanistan, but if it once again allows terrorist groups to gather there and wreak havoc upon the world. Winfield native Johnny Michael “Mike” Spann was a U.S. Marine and CIA officer. In remarks on Afghanistan Monday, President Joe Biden said the terrorist threat “has metastasized well beyond Afghanistan,’’ and U.S. forces “conduct effective counter-terrorism missions against terrorist groups in multiple countries where we don’t have permanent military presence. If necessary, we’ll do the same in Afghanistan. We’ve developed counter-terrorism over-the-horizon capability that will allow us to keep our eyes firmly fixed on the direct threats to the United States in the region, and act quickly and decisively if needed.” Biden also said “there are some very brave and capable Afghan special forces units and soldiers. But if Afghanistan is unable to mount any real resistance to the Taliban now, there is no chance that one year -— one more year, five more years or 20 more years -— that U.S. military boots on the ground would have made any difference.” Johnny Spann said U.S. troops were making a difference in the “coaching” they were giving Afghan forces. “If you take the best players in the world on any kind of athletic team … football, basketball, whatever, you take the cream of the crop. If you don’t have a damn coach there, they ain’t gonna win no games,” Spann said. He also said the U.S. owes a debt to the many Afghans who assisted the U.S. effort there, including its overthrow of the Taliban’s brutal regime and what Biden today called its goal of making “sure Al Qaeda could not use Afghanistan as a base from which to attack us again.” If anything, Spann said, Biden and his team should have started evacuating its civilians and its Afghan helpers months ago, instead of snarling them in the chaos now in Kabul. “He did not use good sense doing this,” Spann said. “There’s a right way and a wrong way to do everything, and I don’t think that anybody with any common sense at all would have done it this way.” Spann paid a visit to Afghanistan after his son’s death and visited the site where he was killed. Mike Spann’s oldest daughter, now an anchor/reporter at a Biloxi, MS., television station, also has visited the country, and she reflected upon her visit in a recent Facebook post. “The people of Afghanistan are amongst the kindest I have ever been around,” Alison Spann said. “They are resilient beyond belief. I cannot stress this enough. I found such joy in people, and in a place, that had seen so much pain. As news continues to unfold, I ask you to remember these people and pray for them. The fear that must come from the Taliban taking over is unimaginable. My heart is heavy.” According to the U.S. Defense Department, more than 2,312 U.S. service members have died in Afghanistan since the fall of 2001. According to DOD figures compiled by the icasualties.org website, 33 Alabamians have died in Afghanistan over the past 20 years. The post Taliban Takeover Leaves Americans More Vulnerable, Says Father of First American Killed In Afghan War appeared first on BirminghamWatch. A Remembrance of John Floyd, Former Southern Living Editor-in-Chief /2021/02/11/a-remembrance-of-john-floyd-former-southern-living-editor-in-chief/ Fri, 12 Feb 2021 05:52:41 +0000 /?p=108476 The former editor of Southern Living died this week from cancer. (Source: Friends of Birmingham Botanical Gardens) Birmingham-area residents are remembering former Southern Living editor John Alex Floyd Jr. The Alabama native died Monday from cancer. He was 72. Southern Living, which has been based in Birmingham since its founding in 1966, was for many years considered to be a reflection of the old, white South. Floyd did a lot to change that image. “He was very aware of the South changing, and the diversity of the South, and wanted that to be reflected in the pages of the magazine, and [in] hiring practices,” said Jeanetta Keller, the magazine’s former executive vice president and editorial director. When he retired in 2008, Floyd had worked at Southern Living for more than 40 years, almost half of that as editor. He took a lot of heat for the magazine’s coverage of issues such as the Civil Rights struggle and how immigrants were making new lives for themselves in the South. Still, Southern Living remained one of the country’s largest-circulation magazines during his tenure, with stories about homes, food, travel, and gardens. Valerie Fraser Luesse was hired by Floyd in 2001 and is now Southern Living’s senior travel editor. She said Floyd, who grew up in Selma, understood the needs of the magazine’s readers, especially those who live in small towns and come from a middle-income background. “John was all about helping ordinary people, ordinary families just make the best of their life,” she said. “He used to say it’s not hard to come up with a great idea that costs $100,000 but come up with one that is $10 or less. Come up with something that anybody can afford.” Outside of work, Floyd focused much of his attention on helping people in the Birmingham area by working with the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, serving on their boards and in other volunteer capacities. He also worked with his church, Huffman United Methodist, and the Trussville School system. There are stories about him helping scores of individuals get through hard times, offering to help folks buy appliances, a car, and other items. “I don’t know how many lives John changed for the better, but he saw qualities in people that they couldn’t see for themselves. He had a passion for the South, for Southern Living, and its readers and employees,” said Keller. Floyd is survived by his wife Pam, and two sons and their families, and a sister. Because of pandemic-related restrictions, burial services will be private. However, a public memorial service will be held at a later date. Editor’s note: The author of this story was previously an employee at Southern Living and, for part of his time there, reported directly to John Alex Floyd Jr. The post A Remembrance of John Floyd, Former Southern Living Editor-in-Chief appeared first on BirminghamWatch. Birmingham Chosen for Project on Talking Across the Political Divide /2020/10/21/birmingham-chosen-project-talking-across-political-divide/ Thu, 22 Oct 2020 00:57:13 +0000 /?p=105665 About the only agreement between Democrats and Republicans these days is that their opposite number is evil. At least that is the impression one gets in the aggregate. Vituperative, obscene putdowns probably won’t come so readily as they do on Facebook or Twitter, Isay is betting. And he is hoping that people actually listen to each other. Isay started Story Corps in 2003 with booths all over the country where two people could talk into individual microphones — for example, a grandson and his grandmother — and could ask and answer questions and have their exchange recorded for permanent preservation. “More than 650,000 people have participated,” Isay said in an interview from his Brooklyn, N.Y., home. “This is the largest (permanent) collection of human voices. We edit a very small portion for release.” Those who listen to NPR may have heard those Story Corps recordings on WBHM. Isay, 53, also is a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship grant for his groundbreaking work in broadcasting. Birmingham and Three Other Cities Picked for Project Birmingham is one of four cities chosen to be part of this latest Story Corps collection. Wichita, Kansas, is also in the group, with the other two locations yet to be revealed. Isay said the new project of bringing together people of differing political persuasions moved onto his radar “a little more than four years ago when it became apparent we weren’t seeing human beings across the great divide.” The concept arose from a psychological theory, called “contact theory,” he said. Basically, the idea is to “put together ‘them’ and ‘us.’ It is hard to hate up close.” So, go ahead and accept Isay’s challenge. If any of these words describe how you’re feeling these days, you’re not alone, judging by what people are saying and doing in the face of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. From the locust-like razing of grocery store shelves; to the closing of schools, nursing homes and houses of worship; to the canceling of concerts, political primaries, and other large events; to the ever escalating public restrictions — you can’t meet in groups of 500, no – 250, no – 50, no, better make that 25, no – let’s make that 10, just to be safe — the virus seems to have infected daily life on a scale no one expected. There is some good–ish news if you’re experiencing uneasy feelings: it’s normal to feel that way. But it matters what you do with those feelings, said Joshua Klapow, a clinical psychologist UAB School of Public Health. “The number one thing I’m telling people is, you have reason to be anxious and the moment you can admit it to yourself, the easier it’s going to be to navigate this, Klapow said. “The more you downplay it … the more someone like me looks at you and says, ‘You know what? That’s a defense mechanism.’ “This is a big deal. It’s not necessarily life or death for any one person, but this is a huge deal. This is an unprecedented deal. So you should be anxious. You should be nervous. Not panicked. Anxious and nervous and working together to calm our own anxieties and fears, given this temporary shift in our daily existence.” The coronavirus, known as COVID-19, is not the first disease outbreak to inspire fear. SARS, another strain of coronavirus, Ebola and MRSA have all led to similar concerns and similar psychological effects. In a Psychology Today article titled “Mental Health in a Time of Pandemic – The psychological effects of an outbreak,” Dr. Sandro Galea saw particularly troubling distress. “In 2004, I worked with colleagues on a study of SARS control and the psychological effects of quarantine in Toronto, Canada. We found among quarantined persons a high prevalence of psychological distress, including symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).” he wrote. “A key takeaway: Even if we can halt the physical spread of a disease through the expeditious use of quarantine and social distancing, we will still have to contend with its mental health effects in the long-term … . This is a message that is frequently forgotten. The mental health effects of COVID-19 can shape health for many years, long past the events that precipitated them.” Even when the outbreak is limited, the mental impact is real. Consider what happened a few years ago when a total of 10 people were infected with Ebola in the U.S. “Although there were only 10 confirmed U.S. cases — all of them people who had direct, prolonged contact with Ebola patients — parents in Texas, Mississippi and New Jersey pulled children out of school after other students or administrators had chance encounters with Ebola patients or visited West Africa, and a teacher in Maine was put on leave after attending a conference in Dallas where the first U.S. case was discovered. The states of New York, New Jersey and Illinois mandated 21-day quarantines for health workers who had treated Ebola patients in West Africa, and Connecticut reserved the right to quarantine anyone believed to have been exposed to the virus,” according to the article “An epidemic of fear” on the website of the American Psychological Association. Paul Slovic, a professor at the University of Oregon who studies decision-making, was quoted in the article as saying, “The minute the Ebola threat was communicated, it hit all of the hot buttons: It can be fatal, it’s invisible and hard to protect against, exposure is involuntary and it’s not clear that the authorities are in control of the situation.” Joshua Klapow, a clinical psychologist UAB School of Public Health (Source: UAB) The current COVID-19 outbreak shares many of the same characteristics. But it’s also significantly different in how it’s affecting us, Klapow said. Some of that has to do with terminology. “There are some definitely unique characteristics to this particular pandemic. When you move from ‘epidemic’ to ‘pandemic,’ just the words alone have psychological impact. The word ‘epidemic’ has a psychological impact. So when you’re talking about stress … as soon as you put the words out, already people’s stress levels are elevated. And even though moving from epidemic to pandemic for many reasons doesn’t change anything at the individual level, it sounds worse. And it is from a global population standpoint, but it’s not worse from yours. It’s just the word has connotations. So the words alone have impact,” he said. Another difference between COVID-19 and previous disease outbreaks is that people are having trouble settling on how to feel about it. They know the disease can be deadly — but mostly to people in certain age groups. And it doesn’t have the scary disfiguring characteristics of something like Ebola. “So what you’re getting from people is this moving back and forth psychologically between it’s really bad and it doesn’t look that bad in terms of the illness itself,” Klapow said. So, at the same time as some are focused on the fact that other diseases are more likely to kill people than COVID-19, they’re also being asked to make significant sacrifices to contain it. “We’re being told that we have to get out of school, work at home, and we can’t gather in groups of 50 or more. So there’s this kind of confusion between, it isn’t bad or doesn’t look bad … but we’re taking these, what feel like, extreme measures. And people forget we’re taking the extreme measures to prevent the larger population hospital systems from being overwhelmed. That’s just new for us.” All the changes are coming fast. “Those types of changes we’ve never had in such a swift time period,” Klapow said. “And as a result, you put all of that together, and you create great uncertainty, great flux in our daily lives, and habits and routines. And so that’s what’s causing, probably not so much panic, but fear and confusion, and what I would call a lot of anticipatory anxiety.” Hoarding Toilet Paper Some of that “anticipatory anxiety” contributes to how people are buying stores out of normal everyday items, even staples like toilet paper, which is completely unrelated to an upper respiratory illness like COVID-19. “They’re buying up all the rational things, and then they’re buying the irrational things, which again is the great ‘why is everybody buying toilet paper’ story,” Klapow said. “What we’re seeing is just a more extreme version of what we see very frequently when we have … threat of snow, threat of severe weather. People go and they start buying things, buying things that they feel will either protect them, make them feel comfortable, are perceived as a necessity or — this is the interesting one — are being bought by other people. It’s a kind of modeling behavior. And so the toilet paper, people started buying extra toilet paper, and it sort of caught on.” The by now well documented raiding behavior, taking every last scrap of whatever coveted item is on the shelf, “That comes from the uncertainty,” Klapow says. “If, for example we were told in no uncertain terms there’s going to be … a one week period … and the message was unified and it was across the board and after a week everything will return back to normal, you’d still see some raiding, but not as much.” He pointed out that even in countries such as Spain, where COVID-19 has caused a more drastic public lockdown, people are being allowed to go to the grocery store. So why are Americans grabbing up everything they can? “This is a function of social media, mass media and Americans who are used to having access to all that they need, whenever they need it,” Klapow said. “A lot of it’s fear, but it’s not fear of ‘I’m going to die.’ It’s fear of inconvenience, to be honest with you.” Disrupting Routines People are especially fearful because their daily routines are being disrupted, he said. “If you think about it psychologically, short of fear of harm, the next thing that makes people most distressed is when you prevent them from engaging in their habits and routines. And that’s what’s happening to us right now,” he said. “It’s the beginning of a significant disruption of our habits and routines.” Another cause of distress is the forced “collective altruism,” Klapow said, meaning that people are being asked by the authorities to disrupt their own lives and routines for the sake of other people. “This is the struggle public health officials are having. They’re saying, ‘Look, we’re going to have to shut these things down because the reality is we need everybody to adhere to this so that people don’t get sick.’ We’ve never been in that place before,” he said. “We are on the whole pretty egocentric … . This has thrown us for a loop because it’s asking us to preventively be responsible to look out for one another.” Seeking Simple Messaging One thing that can ease fears is messaging from authorities that is simple, clear and consistent, according to the article on the American Psychological Association website. “Timely, honest communication from a source an audience deems credible is essential to containing fear during an epidemic, but governments have the tough job of explaining risk and telling people how to act without also seeding alarm, said Carnegie Mellon University psychologist Baruch Fischhoff, PhD. “The discipline is very straightforward: Identify the few things that people most need to know and figure out how to explain them in clear, trustworthy terms,” Fischhoff said. Klapow agreed that simple, consistent and repeated messaging that everyone can understand is critical to help manage anxiety during a pandemic. Social media works against that effort however, he noted. “Social media and the internet creates so much communication noise that you almost can’t fight that. And that’s what gets people most anxious,” he said. If people went only to a few trusted local sources, for example the CDC, the Alabama Department of Public Health and the Jefferson County Department of Health, for information, the noise, confusion and anxiety would diminish, Klapow said. Establishing a Routine Accepting that anxiety is normal in circumstances like these is the first step toward dealing with the fear a pandemic causes, he said. “We should be nervous and we should be actively doing things to try to make ourselves feel less nervous. That’s an OK behavior, taking some time for yourself. Spending some time with your family. Taking a walk by yourself. Praying. Meditating. Whatever you need to do to kind of ground yourself, it’s important to do right now. That’s not something to blow off. Because there is collective anxiety.” He added that as public restrictions keep increasing in an effort to contain COVID-19, “It is very important that you try to find some routine, even if your routine has been disrupted. So, what can you do on a regular basis if you can’t do what you were doing before? Getting up at the same time, exercising every day, eating breakfast — things that allow you to say, ‘No I can’t go to the movie theater and soccer’s canceled … but here’s what I do every day.’ Having routine helps us reduce our own distress and it gives us purpose.” Finally, he added, stop fighting the restrictions. “The more you try to fight or rebel against the guidance,” the longer the restrictions will be in place for everyone,” he said. If that’s the case, “You as an individual contribute to the perpetuation of our disruption.” The post The Pandemic Takes a Psychological Toll as Well as a Physical One appeared first on BirminghamWatch. Life Goes on Despite the Coronavirus Threat /2020/03/15/life-goes-despite-coronavirus-threat/ Sun, 15 Mar 2020 09:44:52 +0000 /?p=98389 Many folks may be lying low because of the coronavirus threat or locked in lines under harsh fluorescent lights trying to stock up on toilet paper. The post Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Centers on Lockdown appeared first on BirminghamWatch. Brandon Farmer, Alabama Nursing Home Association president and CEO (Source: ANHA) Alabama nursing homes and assisted living facilities went into lockdown Saturday in the wake of the president declaring a national state of emergency from the COVID-19 virus. The facilities are implementing a no-visitors regulation from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Alabama Nursing Home Association President Brandon Farmer on Saturday urged its 231-member nursing homes statewide to restrict all visitors and non-essential personnel from going inside the facilities. His action was mirrored by the Assisted Living Association of Alabama. The same regulation applies to nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Some veterans homes in Alabama also joined in closing off the sites to visitors. There is one exception to the federal rule: If there is an end-of-life situation, affected visitors will be limited to a specific room inside the nursing home after they are screened for fever and respiratory symptoms. The regulation directs both facility types to cancel communal dining and group activities and actively screen residents and staff for respiratory symptoms. These actions are imperative because nursing homes serve people who are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19, Farmer said. Older people have a much higher death rate when they contract COVID-19. The president of the American Health Care Association, Mark Parkinson, earlier this week called the mortality rate at Seattle-area nursing homes “shocking.” Twenty-five people associated with one nursing home being called America’s epicenter of the pandemic have died, and many of those still in the home have tested positive for the virus. Parkinson predicted that the death rate from the infected may well exceed the 15% reported in China for people aged 80 and older. Alabama nursing homes have been practicing protective protocols similar to the new CMS guidance for several days, Farmer said. The same is true for assisted living facilities, but their association left the visitors restrictions up to individual facilities. “We know this is a difficult time for our residents and their family members,” Farmer said, and he asked them to be understanding and cooperate. “Protecting the health and well-being of those in our care at all times and the protection of the general public during this health-related emergency are our priority,” Farmer said. The nursing home association represents 231 nursing homes, or 94% of those in the state. For more information, visit anha.org The assisted living association adopted the same federal regulation and added that all facility staff be screened prior to resident contact each day. Anyone entering the facility, such as home health or hospice staff, should also be screened for fever and respiratory symptoms before being allowed into the facility. The regulation can be found at CMS.gov. The post Nursing Homes, Assisted Living Centers on Lockdown appeared first on BirminghamWatch. Alabama Has Its First Cases of COVID-19; Public K-12 Schools to Close for 2½ Weeks /2020/03/13/alabama-first-confirmed-case-covid-19/ Fri, 13 Mar 2020 20:33:12 +0000 /?p=98332 Latest Updates: Alabama now has two confirmed cases of COVID-19, one in Jefferson County and one in Montgomery County, and public schools will close after Wednesday for 2½ weeks. MY: Ich würde mich Fay gern anschließen.
