When I tried to connect to AT&T wifi (attwifi), it brought up the AT&T Wifi login site, not a Starbucks logoed site like the one I see on my laptop. I tried putting in my Starbucks id using the Other Networks options but it didn't seem to like it. So how is this supposed to work? Does it work with iTouch? Despite asking lots of questions about charges and reading through all the data on the website, it would have been cheaper for me to use my UK phone for the following reasons: 1. You are charged for calls whether they connect or not 2. Your callers are charged for calls whether they connect to you or not 3. The phone did not work for 4 days out of the 7 I was there and after hours of camping outside an internet cafe waiting for tech support messages to come back to me, and 3 days later it was identified as ' a network problem with the US supplier' 4. The cost of calls to my number was exhorbitant. They get around this by saying that 'it varies, ask you Service Provider'. However, what they fail to mention is that this is classified as a 'PREMIUM SERVICE' number. If this was in the FAQs I would not have bought this phone. 5. My phone, though switched off, is continuing to absorb charges against my 'credit' of 25p every other day. This may be because someone tried to call me? who knows? - but in the FAQs, there is no mention of you being charged if people call you and your phone is switched off. I have no voicemail to pick up. BTW, the total cost for people to call me, plus the sim set up, plus the extra credits, plus the calls I had to make while the phone was not working amounted to a little over £365, and this was for calls to about 7 different numbers (4 UK, 3 US) and no more that about 30 calls, of which only about 10 lasted more than 10 minutes. On the plus side, when it did work, the calls were quite clear. I did use one of these recently while in the USA. But sometimes the world turns it into that!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="300" height="320" src="; width="240" />

Twenty years later and my heart is still tender….

I rarely ever, hardly ever, almost NEVER talk about politics.

Basically, I don't.

I talk about Jesus and Disney and Alabama football and coffee and Target.
I don't blog enough. I wish I took the time to blog more. It's not like I lack words.... but regardless, I do not talk about politics.

Why?
Because I don't care. Not that I don't care about politics, but your vote, doesn't make me love you any less. Your opinion probably won't change mine. That's why I love the good ol' USA, because we were founded on the truth that everyone can have an opinion and they don't all have to be the same.
And that's ok! <said an="" and="" best="" get="" in="" my="" opinion="" oprah="" ou="" voice="" you=""><said an="" and="" best="" get="" in="" my="" opinion="" oprah="" ou="" voice="" you=""></said></said>

But when you ask me about late-term abortion. I care.
NO. I don't love you any less. Actually, I probably love you more, if I am close enough to you that you have talked to me about your abortion.
Late-term, early on, or somewhere in between - if we have talked about it, I love you. God loves you.
And if we haven't talked about it, I want to. And I love you.
I feel you. I ache with you, for whatever reasons you ache.

But I have my own truth, too.
And that's why I share today.

I don't tell this story often. And I don't tell it with indifference.
I tell it with tears dripping onto my t-shirt, as I have found myself struggling, yet again, on February 5th. My fingers tremble as I type my emotions.

Twenty years ago.
{Wait. did you get that. It has been twenty years?}
Twenty years ago, and I can still smell the sterile entry of the hospital room that I found myself in.
I didn't go there with joy. I didn't go there with a "bring the baby home from the hospital" bag in tow.
No. I went there scared out of my mind. And aching. My bones hurt with grief.

I had just been told that my sweet Elijah was no longer living. His heart had stopped. His chord had clamped and his life in the womb came to an abrupt, unexpected stop. The little guy that I had nurtured and rocked and massaged and watched play endless soccer games in my belly was already in the presence of the Lord.

Why?
No.
Stop.
I can't.
I won't.
Oh my gosh. How? How will I?
Why?

What do I do?
You see I had never delivered a completely healthy baby (that in fact, wasn't healthy and wasn't living).
And honestly, I had never known anyone that had.
What do we do? What happens next?

The sweet nurse explained to me that we had two options:
        1. We could have his funeral. [WHATTTT? Twenty-something-year-old-mothers don't plan funerals.]
The shocking reality? Yes. Yes, they do.

        2. The more common practice, and probably the "easiest on Mom and Dad,” she said "We will dispose of him and take care of that for you. Then you will be discharged, to go home and recover.”

Oh, wait. I am sorry. I don't know what you mean.
Wait.
"Take care of that?” What does that mean?
No. Are you kidding?
What are you going to do with my son?

That would be a “no.”
We will move forward with a funeral.
And we did.

My parents and Scott's parents handled most all of those details. I was in no shape to make decisions about little tiny caskets and flowers and such.
Bless their sweet souls for taking over and being the hands and feet of Jesus, and for serving us so well during those days, when I know they were grieving too.

So, what in the world does this have to do with abortion?

Here's where my heart is on this.
And this is the part that is even hard to share and difficult to admit.
But it is the soul-crushing truth.

The nurse came in and explained how the day would go:

I would labor. I would have pain. I would labor. I would have pain.
The day would drag on, and the hours would be long.
And the clock would tick slower than usual.

But when the time came, I would deliver sweet Elijah. And then they would take him for observation and to determine just exactly what would have caused his death (unknown at the time, later to be discovered the clamping of his chord).
Then, they would take him and prepare him for the funeral home.

Ok.
That's fine.
I don't want to see him.
I don't want to hold him.
I don't handle death well, on a good day. I know my limits. So, this is NOT a death that I will be able to see and hold.
I can't. And I won't. But thank you.
Y'all take care of him and I will be fine.

Scott said, "I do. And I will."
And that was fine with me.
We agreed that our grief and our process would be different and I knew that my heart couldn't take seeing him, not alive.

So, we agreed.
The clock ticked.
The pain increased.
The reality that I was delivering a life, that wasn't living, was setting in on me, and honestly, today, 20 years later, it's by the Grace of the merciful hand of God that I made it through that day.
My heart was broken. I can't articulate the grief. I can't articulate what I felt like my body was being asked to do.

But, we did. God did. Scott did. Elijah did.
He was born.
My doctor was so tender.
She said "Oh my. He's beautiful. Mom, you were strong. You did a good job.”

But what I need for you to visualize is this:
The doctor was at the foot of the bed, and just before she delivered, she reached above her head and she grabbed a GIANT light from overhead. It was a dome shaped light that was bright and blinding. It was sharp enough to make you look away, because the piercing light was too much to stand.

But look away, I did not.
All of a sudden, as Elijah was being welcomed into this world, I could see his reflection.
I could see my son.
I could see his legs.
His feet.
His arms.
His life. That wasn't there.

In every ounce of strength I had remaining, I thrust my arms forward and said, "Please let me hold him," and she hesitated for just a moment, and gave me an “Are you sure?" look. She knew I was sure.

And hold him, I did. The son I did not want to hold. The body I did not want to embrace. The little tiny toes I did not want to count. All of a sudden, the desire to connect with him was heavier than I can explain.

Oh my heart. Oh my soul.
If I could have opened my mouth and breathed life into his nostrils, I would have given my last breath, just to watch him take one.

I would still love to do that today. The vision of twenty years ago is like it was just this morning.

I said out loud to him over and over, "Just breathe. Just take one breath." If I could have just seen his chest pound. JUST.ONE.TIME. His delicate little self. I loved him so. He never took a breath. He didn't have to. I loved him as if he had taken a thousand.

I still ache at the thought that my body wasn't strong enough for him. Or I didn't protect him enough. Or going skin to skin couldn't save him. Or I … Or I … Or I …

But God.

We grieved. We cried.
We ached. We hurt.
We buried.

But God.

We were loved so well. We were served. We were encouraged. We were held.

My point?

I believe when you get to the point of "late-term abortion" you are at a point where life exists. The body is full. The connection is there.
I know this full well. I saw him. I carried him. I delivered him. I held him. I buried him.

And I know that the mom is hurting, and I know that the mom has grief. And I know that the mom may not want the baby.

I get it. I feel you. I hear you.

But please give life a chance. And then on delivery date, if you still feel the same way, then let's move forward with the adoption process and give another family a chance to love that life. And if you and I are close enough that we can talk about this, call me. Let me love you through this part. Let me be there for you. Let me listen. And if we aren’t “close enough," let’s change that. And let me be there for you. I may not be able to offer a solid solution or take the pain away, but I can hold a hand and I can help you set up an appointment with a counselor or I can help connect you with adoption services. I don’t know what all of that looks like for you, but I am willing to try. And if none of that speaks to you, please know that if you have read this far, I have prayed for you multiple times already. Earnestly and honestly.

I don't judge. I don't hate. I don't attack.
I ache. I hurt. I feel. And I love. And God loves. And He has carried me for twenty years.
He has redeemed my story. He has enriched our lives. He has shown us a thousand times over how Elijah's death has been used to reach, love, minister and help others.

It's the part of my story that is so super tender. It's the part that I don't talk about in a public setting, because there will be tears streaming down my face, and mascara ruined, in about point 2 seconds! But it's also the story that He trusted me with.

It's a story of life and of death. And I choose daily not to stay in the death, but to walk in the life.

I rambled today. I know it. But I needed to. I needed to share this story today and I won't apologize for doing so. If I offended you, then I apologize for offending you. That isn't my heart and is not my intention. My heart is heavy today. And my desire for life is strong.

Because I know God is a God of creating life, and I also know He's a God of redeeming stories. Even twenty years later, it is well with my soul. (But I still cry about it.)
feeds/posts/full feeds/posts/default?alt=rss
2019/02/twenty-years-later-my-heart-and-my.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Just call me "B")0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595644407412485394.post-9096943632324410329Tue, 01 Jan 2019 23:11:00 +00002019-01-01T17:11:53.209-06:00farmhousefixer upperjesusnew houseA promise of hope for 2019

<a href="; style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="; width="320" />

This scale is moving me into 2019 with a hope and a promise.
It seems silly. They totally do.

But you see, by me offering the boundaries, I also set them up to make a decision.
Do they defy our rules in our household?
Or do they step outside of those and go their own way?

Now.....everyone that is a parent of any age....also knows that "going our own way" has risks, and consequences, and more importantly, life lessons.

While I would love to spare my kids from a few hard life lessons, I can't be a helicopter mom and control their every move.

-------
I digress.
-------
So, this brings me (us) to my (our) right as a parent.
While you live here, and I provide you with all of the necessities of life (yeah, like your iPhone...duh!)....then you grant me the rights to continue to parent you.

And that means it is ok for you to hate me, because you are grounded.
I know.
That sucks.
But you are grounded.

Believe it or not....I am helping you make some decisions that you can't yet make for yourself.

I am.
Because I love you.

And I call sin, sin.
Because I love you.

And God calls me to the mat on things.
Because He loves me.

But never once ever---not once. NEVER. does He discard me. Or disown me. Or stiff-arm me.

Nope. He loves me.
He has the right to discard me. and disown me.
Yes, He does, because of the way I act sometimes.

And, so in turn...I as a parent, should extend that same grace.

Love. with boundaries and guidance. But Love.

The key is that it always begins and ends with love.

But, dang it, why does parenting have to be so hard!

feeds/posts/full feeds/posts/default?alt=rss
2016/12/my-rights-as-parent.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Just call me "B")0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595644407412485394.post-7903027957793615757Wed, 28 Sep 2016 20:20:00 +00002016-09-28T15:20:13.810-05:00bilHealingjesusHealingA text from my chiropractor /wellness Doctor today:

Patience is required as body heals... consider it more of a windy road of a traveling plan rather than an exact destination to reach. 😊

feeds/posts/full feeds/posts/default?alt=rss
2016/09/healing.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Just call me "B")0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595644407412485394.post-7681508059199632380Sun, 18 Sep 2016 00:02:00 +00002016-09-17T19:02:02.425-05:00Alabama footballLife is like an Alabama vs Ole Miss game
<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src=";>

feeds/posts/full feeds/posts/default?alt=rss
2016/09/life-is-like-alabama-vs-ole-miss-game.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Just call me "B")0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595644407412485394.post-8433939264991347617Mon, 29 Aug 2016 23:38:00 +00002016-08-31T17:15:06.222-05:00Alabama footballjesusDepth chart, Football and JesusI love Coach Saban.

We know this.

But today in his presser, he yet again gives the media another reason to love to hate him.

Or maybe they hate to love him.

<a href=";

But when it comes to the topic of the depth chart. But it resonated with me. In a whole new way.

I'll admit I'm not super Bible-savvy, but I love when an "old story" has a new meaning.

So it's in Exodus. And it goes a little something like this. Moses had the staff of God in his hand. When he would raise his Hand, Israel prevailed. But when he lowered it..well, Amalek did.

So the point here was that Moses needed to keep his hands held high until the battle was won.

I myself am a "hand raiser".

I'm a praise-the-Lord-raise-my hands-in-church girl. I sing. (Off key). I sway.

Whatever. I praise.

But. What about the times when it's hard to praise. What about the times when it's you're broken. And your praise is weary.

That's when you need an Aaron and a Hur. One on your right. One on your left.

And they say "hey girl. You stay there. I'll hold my hands up FOR you. I'll hold YOUR hands up for you. I'll praise for you until the battle is won. Or until you're strong enough to praise again!"

Recently, I had a similar instance. I had just had surgery a few days prior and everything was a struggle. Everything that we take for granted.

I was home alone.

And felt like I could *finally* shower. Not be rushed. And go slow. At my own pace. Before my people came home.

I did.slowly.

Success.

I was dressed. And I was feeling accomplished.

And I had not thought any further than that.

When a friend came to the back door.

(That kind of friend that knows she doesn't really have to knock)

And I said "oh my gosh. Will you please dry my hair."

And she did.

And we chatted. And she left.

She literally had just come by. Un-announced. To check on me.

AND TO HOLD UP MY HAND.

I can't ever be thankful enough.

And such a great solid reminder in God's word.

We need each other.

Be an Aaron. Or a Hur.

Because one day, you may need one yourself.

feeds/posts/full feeds/posts/default?alt=rss
2016/08/steady-hands.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Just call me "B")1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5595644407412485394.post-3129541061904607742Thu, 25 Aug 2016 02:00:00 +00002016-08-25T10:06:56.895-05:00chapmanmasonDeodorant in the fridgeThere are times when I really think I have this boy-mom thing under control.
And then I open the fridge. A SPARTAN RACE! I have completed two Spartan Sprints previously, (2012 and 2013) so when I was given the opportunity to race the Asheville Super, I couldn't say no.

For those of you who don't know, Spartan has three levels of races:

Sprint (3+ miles and 20+ obstacles)
Super (8+ miles and 25+ obstacles)
Beast (12+ miles and 30+ obstacles)

If you complete all three levels in one calendar year, you've achieved what's called the Spartan Trifecta. My brother (<a href=" to his YouTube channel) is now 2/3 of the way to being done with this, having completed a sprint earlier this year and the super this weekend.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="; width="640" />

So, Matt and his friend Zach came over on Friday night and we set out for the race on Saturday morning. We got there and easily parked ($10) and got our stuff. It helps if you print out a waiver and know your bib number, but there were plenty of volunteers and booths so it really wouldn't have taken long either way.

Spartan has changed a lot since my last race. They used to mark your face and body with your bib number (like a triathlon) and you wore a bib (like a running race). Now they've started giving out these headbands with your bib number on them. To me that's a big improvement. I usually wear a headband anyways, plus those markers either come off the first time you're in water (about 5 minutes into the race) or you have to scrub off a layer of skin to get them off.

We checked a bag ($5) and got ready to go. We were racing with a group that Matthew and I have just become active in lately, called Operation Enduring Warrior (OEW). We are both community ambassadors for this charity and we were really excited to be racing with the team. Our MAT (Masked Athlete Team) was there to assist an OEW Adaptive Athlete through the course. I plan on going into this in a lot more depth in another post because I want to give it the attention it deserves, so that's all you get for now!

My mindset for this race was just to have fun and enjoy it. I was excited to race with such a large team and to challenge myself. However, I WAY underestimated the seriousness of this course. I should have realized that with such a large group we would be out on the course for a long time. I should have worn a hydration pack and I definitely should have brought some sort of carbs. About 2 miles in a guy offered to split a pack of Gatorade chews with me and I swear I could have kissed him.

We also ended up getting separated from our team, which I was bummed about.

So, obstacles...

The usual suspects: 4 ft walls, 6 ft wall, 8 or 10 ft wall, cargo net, rope climb, spear throw, bridge, sandbag carry, bucket brigade, pulley, fire jump, slip wall, monkey bars, over under water obstacles, tractor pull, and barbed wire crawl.

New to me: A different play on monkey bars, wooden bars you had to jump over, mental challenge (had to remember a set of numbers to repeat back at end of race), a cargo net that was just straight up and down, atlas stone carry, and horizontal rope climb.

Plus lots that I don't remember or don't know how to describe, plus the huge, never-ending obstacle that was the terrain. We climbed, and we climbed, then we climbed some more. This race was set in a rock quarry and Asheville is quite mountainous. Spartan race definitely used that to their advantage! On the course map below, the part between obstacles 18 and 19 was pretty brutal. I didn't think we were every going to get to the top of that mountain.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="; width="640" />

Thank the Lord, they gave out Clif Shot Bloks at the water stop before that big climb. Those were lifesavers. And of course it reminded me of the two packs of Shot Bloks I had brought to the race... And left in our bag at bag check.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="; width="426" />

As always, the camaraderie was excellent. What better way to bond with 10,000 strangers than to make them do something really challenging together. This race was definitely a challenge, but to be honest I felt very good afterwards. I wish I had brought water and fuel, but other than that, I felt really good!

I felt like I was in so much better shape than when I did the Sprints. I'm not sure if that's true or if this race just played more to my strengths (I'm built for endurance, not speed). I also think having completed long races before really helped me mentally.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="; width="426" />

And of course, having my brother with me was amazing. He is just one of those people who makes you feel so much better than you actually are. He was constantly encouraging us and checking in.

After we finished we were given our medals (SO, SO, SO cool), shirts, bananas, Clif bars, and cold FitAids.

Spartan has really stepped up their swag game. The medals are badass, with nice ribbons and the shirts are super soft. They also had the shirts in a little bag for us so we would't get them dirty.

If you have ever considered doing a Spartan race, I'm here to tell you: SIGN UP!!!!! You won't regret it (well maybe just for a second before). When you finish it (and you will finish it, don't doubt yourself!!!) you are going to feel unstoppable. You will most likely be tired and bruised, but no one can take that feeling of accomplishment. And who doesn't love an excuse to play in the mud?

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me! I love talking Spartan race and there are no stupid questions!!!

Thank you to Spartan Race who provided me an entry to this race in exchange for my honest review.

2016/08/2016-asheville-spartan-super-race-recap.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Courtney)2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2769134661985742700.post-888878955167800030Sun, 07 Aug 2016 22:15:00 +00002016-08-07T15:15:41.656-07:00828isgreatashevillehikehikingnorth carolina hikestrailswestern north carolinawncCatawba Falls HikeBrad and I were both off on Friday so we decided to check out a local trail. I have no idea how long it was because my Fitbit died and I wasn't wearing my Garmin. I'm guessing round trip maybe 2.5 miles?

Brad continued by himself on the steeper part (heading to the top of the falls). I'm afraid of heights and while I was confident in my ability to climb up, I was not so confident in my ability to rappel down (there were ropes tied by God knows who to assist). He said the view up there wasn't worth all the trouble.

This was a great, short hike. After reading his previous book, "Spartan Up!" I was so excited to dive into this one.

Another reason I was so excited to read the book is because I need training tips! I'm signing up for the Asheville Super Spartan that's in August and I need all the help I can get.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="; width="422" />

I was mostly interested in the training plan and incorporating it into my workouts, however the thing about the book that I was most pleasantly surprised with was the history of the Spartans. I'm a nerd who enjoys history so those bits and pieces were very nice for me.

I was also surprised to learn that DeSena wants to have OCR be recognized in the Olympics. I enjoyed reading his argument as to why it should be there and honestly, I could see it. I can see his vision and how he's began implementing changes to make the races more uniform, just in between the two races I did in 2012 and 2013 (click links to read my reviews of those races).

I've started incorporating his workouts into my training and so far they're very challenging and effective. I think my favorite thing about them is that I can mostly do them at my house, with little to no equipment.

I also enjoy DeSena's no BS, suck it up buttercup attitude. He seems like a no nonsense kind of guy, and I really admire that.

This book is available for pre-order currently and will be available on August 2nd.

*I received a copy of this book in advance in order to provide my unbiased review. All opinions are my own, as always. *2016/07/book-review-spartan-fit-by-joe-desena.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Courtney)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2769134661985742700.post-2214887552585549094Tue, 05 Jul 2016 03:36:00 +00002016-07-04T20:36:19.913-07:00runningweek in reviewweekly workoutsWODWeekly WorkoutsMonday: 1 hour Boot Camp

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="; width="640" />

Tuesday: 5.5 treadmill miles

Wednesday: rest day

Thursday:
WOD (Crossfit Invictus)
A.
For time:
Run 1200m
40 alternating dumbbell snatches (25#)
40 toes to bar (i used the thing you put your elbows on and pulled my legs up that way)
Run 800m
20 alternating dumbbell snatches
20 toes to bar
Run 400m
10 alternating dumbbell snatches
10 toes to bar

B.
Two sets of Landmine Rows x 6 reps

*I went to the gym in the AM, childcare had a wait list.
