Andrew Barksdale with the North Carolina Department of Transportation has been working hard since Thursday morning to prepare the roads for the freezing rain threat on Sunday.

“North Carolina gets all sorts of weather,” Barksdale said. “Wilmington doesn’t get much wintry weather, but it does sometimes. So we’re always going to be ready.”

Barksdale says the lack of winter weather in recent years across the Cape Fear hasn’t led to a lack of training.

He says NCDOT workers here are just as ready to handle whatever Mother Nature throws our way as the workers in snowier parts of the state.

“Every fall we review our equipment and go over our routes,” Barksdale said. “Then we just kind of wait and see when we need to go.”

BOONE, NC (WWAY) — North Carolina is the target again for more winter weather as forecasters call for a variety of precipitation from the mountains eastward.

The National Weather Service says a winter

After: advisory is in effect for northern and central piedmont counties through noon Wednesday.

Forecasters said rain was expected to spread across central North Carolina Tuesday evening, possibly beginning as light to moderate snow. The rain or wintry mix will then change to freezing rain along and north of Interstate 85 during the overnight hours, with ice accumulations of less than a tenth of an inch expected.

Across the North Carolina mountains, the weather service has posted winter storm warnings and advisories ahead of a system expected to create icy conditions with a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The National Weather Service has issued an Ice Storm Warning until 8 p.m. for New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick counties.

The storm system that brought the region a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain will continue to pull away from the coast later this evening taking the precipitation with it. However, before that, additional ice accumulation is expected for the next several hours, which could cause a total ice accumulation of up to a quarter of an inch in some place before it ends. This could cause some power outages and limbs to come down.

Travelers are strongly discouraged from driving this evening and should keep a close eye on the road conditions if they need to travel later tonight into tomorrow morning until temperatures rise above freezing.

It works to show weather on lockscreen with iOS 13 on an iPhone, just follow the instructions.

Every morning I wake up and it has the weather on my iPhone lock screen (iOS 13.3.1), I can assure you it works. If you have location disabled, it will not work and same with weather.

Before: l go to their web page. If you go into the Weather Channel app’s settings you will find an option for “Always” on….. for location. If you turn that to “Always” and do the other stuff about Do Not Disturb that makes the lock screen thing work, then it all should work for you. It was not working for me either until I changed that setting in the Weather Channel app. Hope that helps.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Rain is in the forecast heading into the weekend, but drought conditions continue to grip parts of southeastern North Carolina as officials monitor worsening impacts across the Cape Fear region.

Portions of Brunswick and Columbus counties are now classified under extreme drought conditions, raising concerns about water supplies, vegetation, and wildfire risk.

Wilting plants, dry soil, and water restrictions have become increasingly common across the region despite some rain last week.

Brandon Locklear, warning coordination meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, said the roots of the drought stretch back to the winter months.

Even with a winter snowstorm earlier this year, Locklear said the region experienced a La Niña

“What it’s showing is that we got a strong El Niño by late summer,” Locklear said.

“What the research has shown is that when we have an El Niño, it tends to reduce development of hurricanes and tropical systems out over the Atlantic Ocean due to increased wind shear,” Locklear said.
