2021/01/blog-post.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Hatim Kanaaneh, MD, MPH)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5722983037748858194.post-583975303155241570Mon, 18 Jan 2021 13:42:00 +00002021-01-18T05:42:08.056-08:00'JeninA Doctor In GalileeApartheidIsraelJenin"Mohammad BakriPalestinian Occupied TerritoriesApartheid is too mild a concept Apartheid is too mild a concept for the way Israel deals with Palestinians under its control when they show any level of resistance. Three days ago, The Guardian published a daring admission by the director of B’Tselem, the largest human rights organization in Israel, of the Apartheid reality that runs throughout Israel and all of the Palestinian Territories that it occupies. It is the standard way Israel deals with Palestinians whether they are its citizens, its permanent residents as in the case of the East Jerusalem population, or subjects of its military occupation in Gaza and the West Bank. The next day, as if in direct response, an Israeli court slammed the actor and movie director, Mohammad Bakri, with a ban on the showing in Israel of his 2002 film “Jenin, Jenin” and a heavy monetary compensation to a former soldier whose face appears very briefly in the film. Gideon Levy opines that the court does Bakri and the Palestinians a great service. The film and the massacre of Palestinians in the Jenin refugee camp that it documents are too important to be relegated to film archives. Now the film has come alive again and you can see it here. That brought back to me the visit I made to the freshly flattened camp in 2002. In April that year, Israel mounted an alleged reprisal attack against the Palestinian Jenin Refugee Camp resulting in the death of scores of fighters and civilians and the razing of a large area of the camp. Despite much debate, mostly academic in the extreme, both the UN and Human Rights Watch deemed Israel’s actions to be war crimes. Mohammad Bakri’s documentary film, Jenin Jenin, gives a Palestinian perspective on the massacre. It is ironic that the architects who later planned the razed section’s renovation reportedly designed its alleys to accommodate Israeli tanks. Here is an entry I recorded in my book of memoirs, “A Doctor In Galilee” [Pluto Press, London, 2015]: June 7, 2002: How does one relate an incident so it feels in writing as it was in reality? What happened last week on a visit to Jenin Refugee Camp was out of character for me. I exposed my feelings so openly that Zainab, my first nurse and the wife of my closest friend, thought I had lost it. She had not seen me weep before in the 32 years of our professional camaraderie. We visited the [Jenin Camp] as part of a medical aid mission from the Palestinian community in Israel, to offer help to the inhabitants after the horrifying rampage by the Israeli army in April. We worked in the dilapidated UNRWA facility for four hours, during which time I cared for over twenty sick children. As we were leaving, we decided to walk through the rubble of the section of the camp flattened by the Israeli war machine more than a month earlier. I have walked through ruins before and sensed the air of total loss that engulfs the whole space. This time I looked at details: the remnants of a family living room with some of the furniture still in place under the caved-in walls; a plastic flower basket hanging between the iron bars protruding from the half- ceiling; a wheelchair hanging from a fallen balcony (we were told the paraplegic survived his fall); pieces of broken toys, the remnants of a musical string instrument, flattened pots and pans. Here and there a few families sheltered under a blanket strung across four sticks over what used to be their camp home, their supposed refuge away from their original home within Israel. Halfway through our walk I noticed a middle-aged man, thin, unshaven and covered with dust, kneeling inside a shallow ditch he had cleared in the middle of the rubble. The ditch was about two meters long by one wide, and about one meter deep, about the size of a freshly dug grave. The bottom was well-packed solid ground, obviously a part of the original camp ground, and the two sides were the base of concrete walls, one with faded blue paint. I walked closer to him, but he did not notice me. Instead he continued clearing the rubble with his bare hands, totally absorbed by his work and with a very determined look on his face. I greeted him with the traditional “May God give you health,” to which he responded absentmindedly, almost mechanically. He continued shoveling out the dirt, only this time throwing the handfuls in the other direction. He was obviously preoccupied but not distraught. I persisted and inquired about what he was looking for. He turned to me and said sarcastically, “Gold, what else?” Again, I persisted with my question. Then he sighed and looked away with a certain sense of shame. “This is the alley on which my house opened. You are standing where it used to be. This is my neighbor’s home. I just wanted to clean in front of my house.” That did it. I could not hold the grief and sadness anymore. It hit like a bolt and I started sobbing. I crouched down, took my glasses off and tried to dry my eyes. But it would not stop. I kept sobbing and my silent gulping for air became louder. Then I just let go and sobbed loudly, momentarily lapsing into the dark abysmal loneliness I felt when as a teenager I came home to find my mother dead and already buried. I regained control only when two men held me around the shoulders and tried to comfort me. One was the same man digging for gold; the second man, I found out later, was a young man nicknamed Michael Jackson, the now-unemployed leader of the camp’s renowned folkdance troop. They both kept repeating to me one reassuring statement: “We are strong. We will outlive this and overcome the destruction.” As I walked away, I was ashamed of the scene I had made. I noticed a group of foreigners being shown around, a group I discovered that were from Iceland and being guided around by Peter Hansen, the director-general of UNRWA. I introduced myself to him and demanded that the capabilities and unique position of the Arab community inside Israel be factored into any plans for the rehabilitation of this and other camps. He acquiesced, agreeing to focus on the psychological health of the camp’s children, and we set a time for a meeting. On my way home, my newly found unabashedness continued. As I got in my car, which I had left safely in a village outside of Jenin, I saw a housewife baking wheat bread in an outside oven in front of her house. I was hungry and the smell of fresh bread was irresistible. I remembered my mother’s freshly baked bread. A child came out of the house. I offered to give him five shekels for a loaf. He ran to his mother and brought two. As he brought the bread the father showed up and told the child not to accept the money. When I insisted that I had to honor the deal I made with the boy the father got a little upset and half-jokingly threatened to break up my car if I insult him and his child any further. He wanted me to come into the house. I apologized for being in a hurry. I was on my way to my nephew’s engagement party. He went in and brought back a plastic bag with a special homemade delicacy—freshly baked paper-thin bread rolled in ghee and sugar. It was delicious. I ate it as I sped off to the party, getting it all over the white clothes I always wear when on a medical relief mission. People at the engagement party had to excuse my looks. They realized I’d had a rough day at the Jenin Refugee Camp. *** In parallel to its director’s article in The Guardian, B’Tselem has updated its website to include a thorough definition of Apartheid in Hebrew, Arabic and English. Its daring and unflinching assertion has caught the world’s attention and has been widely quoted. It is worth recalling that former USA President, Jimmy Carter, had made the same diagnosis years ago in his 2006 book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid”, though he limited his criticism to Israel’s behavior in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. For that, the main stream pro-Israel USA media nearly tarred and feathered him. Last but not least, South Africa, the original home of Apartheid, has long recognized Israel’s policy and practice towards Palestinians as befitting its illegitimate and disowned scion, as the former diplomat and human rights activist Ronnie Kasrils articulated not long ago. 2021/01/apartheid-is-too-mild-concept.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Hatim Kanaaneh, MD, MPH)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5722983037748858194.post-4979638440265460763Thu, 03 Sep 2020 03:25:00 +00002021-01-18T05:27:02.849-08:00Beer Sheva DistrictGazaNakbaPalestinian RefugeesRight of ReturnThe Suez CampaignSalman Abu Sitta's "Mapping My Return"-A Review
NOTE: This review appeared firs in Mondoweiss where one can view the images and possible comments.

<img alt="Salman Abu Sitta. He participates as well in the standard Palestinian intellectual and organizational activism worldwide. Such a career seems typical of many diasporic Palestinians, the genre known for its high educational and professional achievement. And for its reliability: “They would go anywhere, any time, and do a terrific job,” the author tells us.

Yet the loss of home, property and lead position of his family as well as all the familiar physical and sociocultural surroundings must have been overwhelming to Salman as a ten-year-old.

As I listen to Jason Mraz, I have this feeling that something big is over. I'm done with a very important part of my life. I'm not a student anymore, and I will never be again (at least in the same way...). In less than a month I'll start working, and I'm not saying I already miss this student's life, but it's hard to say goodbye to it, to everything I've lived in the last 4 years...

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="; height="400" width="300" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="; height="300" style="cursor: move;" width="400" />

And, finally, the Erasmus, which should be divided in two semestres. During the first semestre I met a lot of people which I will forget as soon as I start the next period of my life. This is something that happens on a experience like this one, when most of the people you meet are happy faces in the door of a club at 6am on a Tuesday...
However, I also met very special people like my flatmates or the guys living next to my room (¡mención especial para Marcos, que al final se ha quedado sin su entrada sobre Bratislava y sé que es de mis seguidores más fieles!). The best days were probably when my friends from Catalunya came and we organised a concert with an awesome band from Wroclaw. But everything I did during that first semester had no meaning, and when I came home on Christmas, I didn't want to go back.

During the second semester, however, I started to go daily to a church next to my dormitory, where there was a youth group, Wawrzyny, which helped me do useful things. I also joined a theatre group, The Shakespeare Society, with whom I laughed at least twice a week. I started working in a Spanish academy, El Sueño, where I could feel that I was not wasting my time in Poland. The last month, although it was the busiest, because I had to prepare my final thesis and study for an exam from Spain, it was also the best.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="; height="400" width="300" />

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="; height="300" width="400" />

"¿Cómo estás?", he escuchado. No he podido evitar volverme, sonriendo.

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; />

¡Me voy a casa!

<a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; height="425" width="640" />
Volver a Madrid.

"In the slip of a bolt, there's a tiny revolt.
The seeds of a war in the creak of a floorboard.
A storm can begin, with the flap of a wing.
The tiniest mite packs the mightiest sting!
Every day, starts with the tick of a clock.
All escapes, starts with the click of a lock!
If you're stuck in your story and want to get out
You don't have to cry, you don't have to shout!

'Cause if you're little you can do a lot, you
Mustn't let a little thing like, 'little' stop you
If you sit around and let them get on top, you
Won't change a thing!

Just because you find that life's not fair, it
Doesn't mean that you just have to grin and bear it!
If you always take it on the chin and wear it
You might as well be saying
You think that it's OK.
And that's not right!
And if it's not right!
You have to put it right!

But nobody else it gonna put it right for me!
Nobody but me is going to change my story!
Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty!"

Si simplemente te dedicas a llorar, gritar, patalear... no cambiarás nada.

Está claro que ellos tienen muchos más problemas que nosotros, pero "we want to be free from the politicians, who work only for themselves; who are ready to shoot, to beat, to injure people just for saving their money, just for saving their houses, just for saving their power".

I'll also be adding some 3d related stuff as well!noreply@blogger.com (Dwayne D. The new dialogue to select stuff in MAX 2008 is just too radically different from the way that it was...period. So...people like me who, like and are familiar with, the old way, feel a small sense of adversity when that dialogue box pops up. Its kind of like when someone says...."ohhhh try this you'll love it", then you do everything in your power not to wretch and have a childish outburst at how extremely wrong it was to even try it. Okay thats a little harsh but seriously, its all about work flow. Try...and learn the new way...but as a keep sake or in a pinch use this method to get back what you know and love.

With 3ds MAX 2008 open, go up to the top of the screen to the customize drop down and select Customize User Interface. Then scroll down and find Selection Floater from the list of tools. You can create a new toolbar called "Legacy Tools" or something like that....then just drag it over into the new toolbar.

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143679163377876450" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" />

Now you can customize the button to whatever you want....but the best thing about this is that now.....wait for it....now....when you click this button, not only does it open the selection floater that you know and love...IT'S MODELESS!!!! What does that mean? Well...it means that you can have your favourite selection floater open and still work in MAX with the selection floater open! I love it....I run dual monitors so i have it over on my second one all the time. This may not be a big deal to some...but i love it! Hope it helps!

2007/12/out-with-new-and-in-with-old.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Dwayne D. I've uploaded some stuff to my <a href="; for you guys to download and have fun with. Here are some renders from the scene:

<img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" /><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" /><img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" />
<img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" />

<img style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="; border="0" /> The scene is rendered using <a href=" by ChaosGroup . I will have this in the free section of my, hopefully...soon to be completed website...in the downloads section. I'll update you guys with the links when verything is up and running.

Well....took my first spin with 3ds MAX 2008 and mental ray 3.6 today....i will say that its encouraging. The quality has always been there but now the ease of use is really, really on par with some of the other rendering engines out there. The cool thing is that the UI actuallly looks like it could be VRays more complicated and less understood little twin brother. As i said...i'll be posting more as i get some test results from it. For now though, i have to hit the manuals and read up on what the best ways to control this beast. Its fun though....time is a thief though.

Now this next little bit is a really big deal and i hope someone out there can tell me how to fix this. So, i've actually made the jump from MAX 9 to 2008, i'm not going to do a review...theres a million out there. What i do want to talk about is a really small thing that makes a huge difference to me....and i hope it isn't one of those things that they just change or take out without telling anyone. Heres the deal...in MAX 9, and for every other version that i can remember going back to 1.0 you could select an object, then hold the shift key down and click the transform gizmo...not move rotate or scale...but just click it, and this would allow you to make a copy/instance/reference. Not in 2008....so please if anyone knows how to fix this if its possible...send me message! Later!

2007/12/au-content-mental-ray-impressions-and.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Dwayne D. Having said that, though, i am now in between projects which means that i can finally install MAX 2008 and get the farm up and running...as well as give the new mental ray features a whirl. I will be posting the resulting renders of my mental ray tests as well as some of the scenes. I've been flooded with emails since returning from Autodesk University so if i haven't got to yours, i promise that i will....oh...and if anyone can put more hours in a day i would appreciate it!
So, as some of you may have noticed, i am currently in the construction phase of my personal website.

<a href=" />
I'm sort of getting everything together right now as far as the content that i'll be putting up. The layout is finished so hopefully in the next little while all the free stuff/commercial stuff will be available for everyone. The content will be heavily swayed toward rendering...with particular regard to VRay and mental ray techniques. So please stay tuned...bookmark it...check back often...i'd really appreciate it. Oh and if there is anything that you want to see in particular shoot me an email.

I was told by a friend that i should check out this cd...he thought that i would like it. So i bought it and i have to say that after i listened to it...i bought all the rest of his cd's. So if anyone wants something really great to listen to while your working, check out "Continuum" by John Mayer. Its all i've been listening to the last couple of days...2007/12/upgrades-vray-and-something-good-to.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Dwayne D. First i want to recognize a few people who were kind enough to recognize me. Daniel Hurtubise, <a href="; , my Revit Architecture go to guy and good friend/fellow Canadian. I follow his blog as best i can, since it is in French, and i am, after all, a lazy boy from Ontario. I promise i'll work on my french...and spanish...and german... etc. The next guy is David Harrington. David doubles as my editor at AUGIWorld magazine and also one of the many who shoot me emails with interesting 3ds MAX problems. Keeps me on my toes. You guys can check out his blog over at <a href="; .
I love to read...and when i'm not reading i listen to audio books. In my car, at work, at home..whenever i can. So i picked up this random book...which i do from time to time. The title of it is "The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant". I'm only about a quarter of the way through it but it's really interesting. Its sort of a capture of the lives and times of some the greatest thinkers in human history. It's really interesting to read about Aristotle, the man. What he was like, what he did in his life...aside from the obvious. I like it so far so if anyone is interested in this type of stuff check it out....i'll probably give a few more comments about it when i finish it.
This brings me to the last sub topic. As i mentioned i love to read and listen to audiobooks. Well i just finished listening to a great one. Well i think its great anyway. Its a book about quantum entanglement but it goes through and gives a whos who and whats what of the development of quantum mechanics. The book is titled "Entanglement by Amir Aczel". Taken from the Penguin website:

Entanglement tells the astounding story of the scientists who set out to
complete Einstein's work. With accesible language and a highly entertaining
tone, Amir Aczel shows us a world where the improbable—from unbreakable codes to teleportation—becomes possible.

Now this might not be everyones cup of tea, but i love anything and everything related to this type of stuff. So having said all that, i am going to try and get some 3d related stuff up here in the next couple of posts. Stay tuned!

2007/12/two-shouts-greek-and-entanglement.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Dwayne D. Starting a blog i mean. The reason being that i tend to be overly wordy and somewhat opinionated. So i figured that if i at least try and throw in some helpful stuff every time i post...i should be okay. So my helpful bit for today is that i am going to keep this short and sweet...as it is late...and tomorrow is a new day after all!2007/12/first-of-many.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Dwayne D. Ellis)0
