It was very exciting: I've already added many projects and as much yarn as I could before my camera's battery died and I got tired of taking pictures. It's definitely as much fun as I heard it was-- hats off to <a href="; and her husband for taking on such a project.
I bought a few books the other day:
<a title="Knitting Lingerie Style" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
<a href=" style="font-style:italic;">Knitting Lingerie Style is such a beautiful book and with many patterns I love and cannot wait to knit. Very excited!

<a title="Simple Sewing with a French Twist" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
I've been eying this book for a while. It is amazing. I was reading it yesterday in the same room as Hunter and I kept bursting out laughing. He thought I was a little crazy, but I never said I wasn't. She makes me want to throw amazing parties and be just the quirky woman that I am. Love it... it's been my night-time reading for the past two days!

Also, I've been anxious to make nona's <a href=" socks, but I didn't have the right size circulars. I ordered a few of KnitPick's classic circulars so that I can knit them as soon as the needles arrive. I am a night person. Whenever I want to get things done, I start around 2 am and work, work, work until it's done. If I try to do it during the day, it doesn't get done.

2. I love French. I watch movies and TV shows in French whenever I have that option. I also love to listen to French music and sometimes translate songs and sing the lyrics in French. Also, I have a list of French knitting terms and sometimes I will read that for fun as well.

3. I hate heat. For a southern girl, that makes things tough. My pale skin and blonde hair is linked to my Norweigan heritage which prompts me to carry SPF 50 in my purse and offer it to friends whenever we go on an outdoor adventure.

4. I am a very idealogical person and believe that I will be able to do everything I want to in my life. Making my own beauty products, making my own clothes, baking bread, cooking with food from my garden, spinning my own yarn, having my own sheep, being completely sustainable while traveling EVERYWHERE as I begin school studying International Business, etc. You name it, I probably want to do it.

5. One of the most gratifying feelings to me is parking perfectly in a tight spot. Why? I don't know, but whenever I execute a perfect parking job I feel strangely proud of myself.

6. I have a fear of finishing knitting projects. Sewing seams, weaving in ends... it all scares me. I am a perfectionist and I always want my knitting to be perfect. The finishing/seaming of a knit reveals to me whether or not I'm happy with the project. Usually, there's something "glaring," but I suck it up and know that if it was perfect, I probably wouldn't be as happy with it.

7. I am an avid reader, or at least I used to be. Knitting has taken up a lot of my reading time and I have ADD, which makes it hard for me to concentrate on audiobooks. So, I now own more books that I have NOT read than I have. Luckily, I have learned how to knit and read, so this summer I hope to finish MANY of the books I own!!2007/05/randomness.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (allie)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21984646.post-3014022916770648565Mon, 21 May 2007 01:31:00 +00002007-05-21T00:56:16.523-04:00Cascade 220GraduationNoni Adventure BagVogue ModelingShort and Sweet UpdateOh, it's been a very busy week. Graduation, which included lots of family in town, left little time for blogging this week. I do, however, have some knitty news.
My new project:
<a title="Noni Adventure Bag and Cascade 220 Heathers" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
A great felted bag for summer made with Cascade 220 (my first experience with this yarn and it's been a good one).

Next, I went to my LYS and they currently have the Vogue Knitting Summer 2007 trunk show in town. Since they have the trunk show, there will be a piece on a local show and I will be modeling one of the garments tomorrow on tv!! I'm very excited and it's also one of my favorite patterns of the issue.
<a title="VK Spring/Summer 2007" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
Anyway, more pics, thoughts, and a whole lotta bag progress coming your way very soon!2007/05/short-and-sweet-update.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (allie)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21984646.post-9145684446949599879Mon, 14 May 2007 03:38:00 +00002007-05-14T00:31:11.672-04:00Central ParkFinished ObjectsProject SpectrumRandomTa da!<a title="Yarn Ends" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
That can only mean one thing.
Yes, the Central Park Hoodie is finally finished and I wore it tonight! Doing the daily rows of my KAL seemed to be just the trick. I had to leave in a hurry for a meeting and took a hat I'd started a while ago, frogged part of it, and left it sitting alone for months. It got some love today, but I forgot the book with the pattern and had to hope I could remember the stripe width (Candy Cane Hat from Handknit Holidays).
Yesterday I said I'd be trying some combination knitting and, people, I think I'm sold. I've been taking plenty of pictures, but then I can't find the time to post. So, with graduation coming up in 3 weeks, I think, I will have much more time to knit and post. Also, this weekend I will finally be getting my own computer which will make blogging a lot less of a hassle. Now here's a comprehensive list of what I've been buying, knitting, crocheting, and thinking about kniting.

New Treats
<a title="New Books" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
I read Stephanie's new book in 2 days-- I couldn't put it down. I've found a project in my new mag that would be perfect for some ArtYarns Regal Silk I've had in my stash for about a year:
<a title="Planned Project" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
The shrug on the front is absolutely adorable as well-- I'm planning on making it with either Louet Euroflax or KnitPicks new CotLin.
<a title="Planned Project" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
While I was out buying books, I picked up some yarn to celebrate Lent's ending. I gave up buying yarn for Lent and it was fairly difficult, I'm happy I made it through alive. Anyway, the yarn is also in keeping with Project Spectrum's colors.
<a title="Project Spectrum Goodies" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
The soak is for blocking my Cabled Footies. The MIssion Falls 1824 Cotton is in a great bubblegum pink with which I plan to make a crochet cap from last summer's Rebecca:
<a title="Rebecca Crochet Cap" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>

Blushing Grannies
I loved this pattern the first time I saw it:
<a title="Blushing Grannies Pattern" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
Blushing Grannies is from the Feb/Mar 07 issue of Crochet Today.
<a title="Blushing Granny" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
This is a close-up of the squares-- I'm really enjoying the crocheting. I love the way it looks and stretches, but the tension is a pain in the neck.
<a title="Cascade Fixation Ankle Socks" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
I sat and finished the first sock while reading The Blind Assassin. The second sock I cast on at work, knit the ribbing, turned the heel and decreased the foot and knit it around for a few inches. That night I finished the toe, but didn't graft the toe together until this week. They still need the ends woven in and to be washed, but I will have a great pair of summer socks shortly!

Once I finished the Fixation socks, I've been working pretty much exclusively on my Somewhat Cowl, but I had a row or two of tension issues due to being used to knitting with Fixation. The rows aren't very obvious and I'm nearly done with the bottom ribbing. Once I have the body finished I will try it on and make sure everything is as it should or I may be ripping back a few inches to correct the gauge and/or waist increases.

I've not sewn another project but I've been doing lots of research and trying to organize a space for sewing. My family also went out of town this weekend to visit an aunt who is a master quilter and I have plans to "study" with her this summer. I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I'll have some more time to sew this coming week!

More pictures will be coming soon and I am combing my stash for projects to work on for the April/May Project Spectrum Colors. And it was a blast!! I took some knits with me to wear: Le Slouch, Bejeweled, and the Bridgetown Belt Bag. I wore them all and felt oh-so-crafty when I could remark that I did, indeed, "knit it myself."

The weekend was also filled with lots of knitting time. I cast on the One Skein Cable Footies before I left and finished them this evening. I always finish projects in the evening when it's hard to take a decent picture, but I don't possess the patience to wait until tomorrow to take a picture.
<a title="Completed Cable Footies" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
This is the actual color and all that remained of the two skeins (I included a pad of Post-Its for scale).
<a title="Mission Falls 1824 Wool- Cable Footies" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
Pattern: Cable Footies from One Skein
Cast-On: March 6, 2007 / Finished: March 14, 2007
Yarn: Mission Falls 1824 Wool- 2 skeins, color 23
Needles: Clover Takumi 4.5 mm (US 7) dpns... the reason I used 7's instead of 8's wasn't that I checked my gauge, but because I didn't double-check the pattens spec's. But they still fit!!
Size: Small (Women's 7 1/2 to 8 1/2)
Modifications: None that I can think of besides the needle size.
Recipient: Hunter's mother... hoping that some knitty goodness can change her heart toward me.

Quick, small projects have been what I've been thriving on lately, but I'm not totally sure what my next small project will be. I finished the first Saturday
<a title="Finished Cable Footie" href="; ><img src="; border="0"/>
and cast on the second yesterday and I am nearing the finish line. My second pair of socks has been fun-- worsted weight makes the project go by so quickly!! These socks are for my boyfriend, Hunter,'s mother, who enjoys hating me. This plan is deemed destructive and threatens the lives and livelihoods of millions of people living in Aceh. Gerakan Rakyat Aceh Menggugat (GeRAM) is an alliance of concerned citizens who have been fighting nearly 2 years since the Aceh Government legalised a new Spatial Land Use Plan that would effectively dissolve protection of much of Aceh’s remaining tropical rainforests, whitewashing crimes of the past, and paving the way for a new wave of catastrophic ecological destruction”, said one of the plaintiffs, Farwiza Farhan. Nine plaintiffs from across Aceh traveled to Jakarta to register the case against Minister of Home Affairs for failing to act on its jurisdiction to cancel Aceh spatial plan as stated in Ministry of Home Affairs decree 650-441 year 2014. These plaintiffs are Effendi from Aceh Besar, Juarsyah from Bener Meriah, Abu Kari from Gayo Lues, Dahlan M. Isa from Lhokseumawe, Kamal Faisal from Aceh Tamiang, Muhammad Ansari Sidik from Aceh Tenggara, Sarbunis from Aceh Selatan, Najaruddin from Nagan Raya, and Farwiza from Banda Aceh. Millions of people depend upon Aceh’s forests, in particular the Leuser Ecosystem, whose protection is required under several National Laws and is the last place on earth where critically endangered orangutans, rhinos, elephants and tigers can be found living together in the wild. This forest was recently ranked by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) as one of the ‘World’s Most Irreplaceable Protected Areas’ in an article in the journal Science. “The countless ecosystem services the Leuser Ecosystem provides serve as an irreplaceable life-support system for the people of Aceh and North Sumatra, providing clean water supplies for people, agriculture, fisheries and other industries in addition to water regulation, preventing environmental catastrophes such as flash floods and landslides that already kill people, devastate crops and infrastructure, and destroy livelihoods all too often in Aceh.” Dahlan M.Isa, the plaintiff from Aceh Utara added. “Our government has lost the ancestral wisdom of how to manage lands, forests and water. Unfortunately the implication of this means one person signing a piece of paper could sacrifice life and livelihood of many” said Abu Kari, the plaintiff from Gayo Lues. “The government’s proposed Aceh spatial plan makes no mention whatsoever of the existence of the Leuser Ecosystem as a National Strategic Area for its environmental protection function, and effectively legalizes numerous new roads, many of which have already been cut and constructed illegally through vast areas of the forests, fragmenting this sensitive ecosystem and opening up new pathways for destruction. Sustainable development for Aceh is impossible if its forests are destroyed,” Farwiza continued. "The Aceh Government cannot contest the inclusion of the Leuser Ecosystem into its spatial plan because it exists as a protected area in three legal regulations: Law No. 11 / 2006 on Aceh Governance, Law No. 26 / 2007 on Spatial Planning, and its derivative, Government Regulation 26 / 2008 on the National Spatial Plan. It would be wise for the Aceh Government to immediately work together with relevant parties, especially Aceh's indigenous communities, to conduct a thorough and comprehensive revision of the Aceh Spatial Plan so that this prolonged debate can finally be ended!" the lawyer representing the case, Nurul Ikhsan stated. The Indonesian National Government’s Ministry of Home Affairs has reviewed the Aceh spatial plan and found numerous legal infringements that needed to be resolved before it could be accepted. Under Indonesian law, the Aceh government is required to revise the regulation and in the absence of revisions, the Minister of Home Affairs is required to formally reject the provincial law known as Qanun 19/2013 on the Aceh Spatial Plan, as stated in Ministry of Home Affairs Decree 650-441 year 2014 “This case is clear cut, all we asked for is the Minister of Home Affairs to uphold its own legal authority to cancel Aceh Spatial Plan as stated in Ministry of Home Affairs decree 650-441 year 2014, and for Aceh Government and Aceh Parliament to revise the spatial plan by including protection of the Leuser Ecosystem” said Nurul Ikhsan, the lawyer representing the case. “If the Minister of Home Affairs, the Governor of Aceh and the Aceh Parliament do not do this, they are clearly acting unlawfully.” Nurul Ikhsan concluded. The nine plaintiffs, who represent many communities from across Aceh, have submitted legal notification of the litigation case to the Ministry of Home Affairs, to Aceh’s Governor, and to the Aceh Parliament, as well as to the public on . Despite passing the 60 days mark of legal notification there has been no response from any of the defendants and therefore case will be registered in Jakarta State Court on 21st January 2016. For further details or comments, please contact: The Representative of Attorneys; Nurul Ikhsan, S.H. CP : Perwakilan Kuasa Hukum NURUL IKHSAN, S.H. The rejection upholds an earlier decision by the National Court in Meulaboh, Aceh, on 8th January 2014, in a case brought against the company by Indonesia’s then Ministry of the Environment, ordering the company to pay IDR 366 billion (approximately USD26 million) for illegally burning forests within the Tripa Peat Swamps, part of the protected Leuser Ecosystem in Sumatra, Indonesia On 27th November 2012, PT Kallista Alam was first charged by the Ministry of the Environment in the National Court in Meulaboh, Aceh, with illegally burning forests within the Tripa Peat Swamps. The judge found the company guilty in January 2014 and ordered the company to pay IDR 114.3 billion as compensation to the state and to spend IDR 251.7 billion on fully restoring the affected forests back to their original condition. According to the Senior Judge in Meulaboh, Rahmawati SH, PT Kallista Alam was found in breach of National Law No 32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, for illegal use of fire to clear forests. The court also confiscated 57 km2 of PT Kallista Alam concession land in Tripa in lieu of payment and for each day payment is not forthcoming ordered the company to pay an additional Rp. 5,000,000 (approx. USD 400). Appeals rejected. The Meulaboh court’s decision was appealed by the company at the High Court in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh (appeal lodged May 14th 2014), but that appeal was rejected on 15th August 2014, prompting the company to lodge a second and final appeal on 6th October 2014 with Indonesia’s Supreme Court in Jakarta. Finally, on 28th August the supreme court rejected the appeal, ordering PT Kallista Alam to now face the penalty imposed by the earlier ruling. The rejection of the appeal effectively brings to an end the lengthy civil legal case first lodged on 27th November 2012 in Meulaboh, but it has additional ramifications too. In parallel criminal cases against the company’s Director and Development Manager, prison terms were handed out on 15th July 2014 of 8 months and 3-years respectively, as well as additional fines. Implementation of these sentences is believed to have been pending the appeal of the civil case with the Supreme Court, and presumably must now be enforced with the recent rejection of that appeal. International outcry PT Kallista Alam, first came to international attention in August 2011, when the former Governor of Aceh Province, Irwandi Yusuf, issued a new 1,605ha oil palm concession permit to the company in the Tripa peat swamp forests within the legally protected Leuser Ecosystem, sparking an international outcry. Acehnese environmentalists immediately sued the Governor and the company over the illegal permit, finally achieving its cancellation on 27thSeptember 2012. In the meantime, huge fires ravaged Tripa’s peat swamp forests, within plantation concessions held not only by PT Kallista Alam but also a number of other companies too. As a result of these fires, Tripa was once again thrust into the international spotlight and a number of new legal cases were brought against the companies by Indonesia’s Ministry of Environment. Tripa is part of the 2.6 million ha protected Leuser Ecosystem, the only place in the world were Sumatran orangutans, tigers, elephants and rhinos can be found living side by side. The Leuser Ecosystem was also listed by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) in November 2013 as one of the ‘World’s Most Irreplaceable Protected Areas’ in an article in the journal Science. Tripa is especially important for its orangutans, since it harbours among the highest orangutan densities in the world. The peat swamps also sequester huge amounts of carbon, which is released into the atmosphere when the forests and peat are cleared and burned, fuelling global climate change. Due to the global significance of the area concerned, over 1.5 million people signed online petitions calling for greater protection of Aceh’s unique and extremely important forests. These petitions were further supported by some of the world’s leading scientists and conservation experts, who wrote to Aceh’s current Governor, Zaini Abdullah, urging him to nominate the Leuser Ecosystem as a World Heritage Site, due to its unique and irreplaceable biodiversity. Rudi Putra, a leading Acehnese conservationist and Founder of the Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL) explained, “The campaign behind this successful case has involved multiple NGOs and communities working together and never letting up the pressure over 3 years. This win would never have been possible without the national and international public support the case has had from people who wouldn’t accept this heinous destruction, who have monitored the legal process from the start and who have kept up the pressure for a just and transparent result. We want to thank everyone who made this positive and extremely welcome final decision possible.” Mr T.M Zulfikar, who brought the first legal challenge against Kallista Alam’s illegal permit and now represents the Indonesian NGO Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari noted, “It has taken 3 long years but we are overjoyed to finally see PT Kallista Alam held to account for its wanton destruction of the Tripa Peat Swamp forests. No financial penalty can ever make up for the devastation and terrible loss of biodiversity caused by the company but we applaud the supreme court for holding it accountable for its actions. The initial ruling in Meulaboh, and now the supreme court’s rejection of the appeal, should send a strong warning to other companies that illegal clearing of forests in the protected Leuser Ecosystem will not be tolerated. We will also be monitoring closely what happens next to ensure the fines and reparations are indeed paid and carried out in full, including the restoration of the affected concession to its former condition.” Kamaruddin, a lawyer working with communities in the Tripa region reiterated, “This decision should serve as a wake up call to any company thinking of investing within the Leuser Ecosystem, a National Strategic Area, that they could suffer the same fate as PT Kallista Alam. It should be a reminder to others as well, who deliberately burn forests or allow forest burning within their concessions, that they could also be prosecuted, regardless of whether or not they are working inside the Leuser Ecosystem’s boundaries. The Judge’s decision in this case clearly illustrates a move towards improved law enforcement against environmental offenders in the region”, he added. Dr Ian Singleton, Director of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme, highlighted the critical importance of the area, “Tripa is one of only 3 remaining peat swamp forests left containing orangutans in Sumatra and it’s impossible to overstate the importance of protecting every last hectare of each of them. Orangutan densities can reach as high as 8 per square kilometer in these areas, compared to an average of around only 1 or 2 per square kilometer in dryland forests. These peat swamps have justifiably been referred to as the ‘orangutan capital of the world’. The Leuser Ecosystem too, offers the only real hope of survival for Sumatra’s other key iconic megafauna, the Sumatran tiger, rhino and elephant, as well as its orangutans. Yesterday’s ruling is of course extremely welcome, but the level of interest in Tripa and the Leuser Ecosystem worldwide shows clearly just how seriously concerned the international community is right now about the fate of these forests and their globally important biodiversity”, he emphasised. Farwiza Farhan of Forest, Nature and Environment Aceh (HAkA) stressed, “Whilst of course we welcome this historic ruling we need to remain extremely vigilant. Aceh’s unique forests and the globally important Leuser Ecosystem are still under immense threat due to the province’s spatial land use plan, which even more than 18 months after it was ratified by Aceh’s Provincial Government, is still rejected by Indonesia’s National Government due to numerous legal infringements. The plan makes no mention whatsoever of the existence of the Leuser Ecosystem National Strategic Area, it effectively legalizes numerous illegal roads, many of which have already been cut through the forests, and it opens up vast areas for potential new, timber, mining and plantation concessions. Despite the win against PT Kallista Alam in Tripa, we still have a much more desperate and urgent fight ahead of us to protect Aceh’s forests and people from another, major, and totally avoidable emerging disaster.” ENDS See also: #savetripa #saveaceh In English: In bahasa Indonesia: noreply@4apes.com (Katy) Tripa News Mon, 14 Sep 2015 12:03:25 +0000 Palm Oil Company fined Millions as Indonesian Court delivers historic ruling against illegal destruction of Tripa Peat Swamp Forests. /fr/news/tripa/item/1152-palm-oil-company-fined-millions-as-indonesian-court-delivers-historic-ruling-against-illegal-destruction-of-tripa-peat-swamp-forests /fr/news/tripa/item/1152-palm-oil-company-fined-millions-as-indonesian-court-delivers-historic-ruling-against-illegal-destruction-of-tripa-peat-swamp-forests [Banda Aceh / Indonesia] Setting a landmark new precedent, Indonesian courts yesterday found palm oil company PT Kallista Alam guilty of illegally burning forests within the Tripa Peat Swamps, part of the protected Leuser Ecosystem, resulting in a fine of 114 billion Rupiah, approximately 9 million US dollars. “This is a clear message to companies working in Aceh who think they can destroy protected forests and get away with it” said Muhammad Nur, Chairman of WALHI Aceh (Friends of the Earth Indonesia). According to Senior Judge, Rahmawati SH, PT Kallista Alam was found in breach of National Law No 32/2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, for illegal use of fire to clear forests, and ordered to pay Rupiah 114.3 billion (approx. Dr Ian Singleton, Director of the Sumatran Orangutran Conservation Programme, highlighted the critical importance of the area. “Tripa is one of only 3 remaining peat swamp forests left containing orangutans in Sumatra and its impossible to overstate the importance of protecting every last hectare of each of them. “The Leuser Ecosystem provides countless locally and globally important environmental services too”, explained Graham Usher, Landscape Protection Specialist with the Swiss based PanEco Foundation. “For Aceh alone these have been valued in excess of 400 million dollars per year, and the region’s contribution to mitigating climate change, through its carbon sequestration function probably stretches into billions of dollars. It is very encouraging that companies and decision makers destroying these services in Indonesia are finally being held accountable for the economic damage their illegal activities cause, and all credit is due to the Ministry of the Environment for their efforts in prosecuting this case. The court’s decision is indeed a huge victory, and represents one significant step in the right direction. But I think many more such steps are needed before we will really see a change in the behaviour of companies and officials.” added Usher. “Aceh’s Parliament is right now pushing a new spatial land use plan which they recently legalised with a new Provincial Government Regulation, known locally as the Qanun RTRW Aceh”. Explained Muhammad Nur. “The Qanun completely ignores the protected status of the Leuser Ecosystem, simply so they can open up large areas of protected forests for road building, mining, palm oil and timber concessions. This will, in effect, end Aceh’s chances for long-term sustainable development, as it will cause further destruction of critical watersheds, leading to ever more frequent flash floods, landslides, and other environmental disasters. The companies lobbying for this new plan, and the Aceh Government themselves, should be held accountable for all the damage that will ensue. We hope yesterday’s result will serve as a strong warning that if you destroy our forests, we are not afraid to fight back” he stressed. “We thank the judge for delivering a just and fair verdict in this case, and all the people around the world who have been calling for enforcement of National Laws protecting the Leuser Ecosystem. This will be a long battle, but it is one we simply cannot afford to lose, no matter what the cost.” He concluded. Yesterday’s groundbreaking verdict is the result of just one of several civil and criminal prosecutions underway against PT Kallista Alam and four other oil palm companies with concessions in Tripa, namely PT. Surya Panen Subur II, PT. Dua Perkasa Lestari, PT. Gelora Sawita Makmur and PT. Cemerlang Abadi. Each faces the possibility of serious financial consequences as a result of their illegal clearance, burning and drainage of Tripa’s unique peat swamp ecosystem. Some of the company Directors and senior management also face the prospect of prison terms in cases against them for their actions on the ground. [END] MEDIA CONTACTS: 1. We are extremely alarmed that if the current pace of destruction is allowed to continue, there will be no HCVF forest and no more Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutan, or any other protected wildlife, in Tripa by the end of 2012. The case had run for 5 months before the judges simply decided that they were not qualified to judge it, thus attempting to brush the case under the carpet. Read a summary of the article below. We scientists have a moral obligation to clearly warn humanity of any great existential threat. In this paper, we present a suite of graphical vital signs of climate change over the last 40 years. Results show greenhouse gas emissions are still rising, with increasingly damaging effects. With few exceptions, we are largely failing to address this predicament. The climate crisis has arrived and is accelerating faster than many scientists expected. It is more severe than anticipated, threatening natural ecosystems and the fate of humanity. We suggest six critical and interrelated steps that governments and the rest of humanity can take to lessen the worst effects of climate change, covering 1) Energy, 2) Short-lived pollutants, 3) Nature, 4) Food, 5) Economy, and 6) Population. Mitigating and adapting to climate change entails transformations in the ways we govern, manage, feed, and fulfill material and energy requirements. We are encouraged by a recent global surge of concern. Governmental bodies are making climate emergency declarations. The Pope issued an encyclical on climate change. Schoolchildren are striking. Ecocide lawsuits are proceeding in the courts. Grassroots citizen movements are demanding change. As scientists, we urge widespread use of our vital signs and anticipate that graphical indicators will better allow policymakers and the public to understand the magnitude of this crisis, track progress, and realign priorities to alleviate climate change. The good news is that such transformative change, with social and ecological justice, promises greater human wellbeing in the long-run than business as usual. We believe that prospects will be greatest if policy makers and the rest of humanity promptly respond to our warning and declaration of a climate emergency, and act to sustain life on planet Earth, our only home. noreply@4apes.com (Iona Haines) Campaigns Fri, 26 Jul 2019 17:02:31 +0000 Rainforest to be felled with Norwegian money? These trafficked apes end up in zoos, amusement parks, and research facilities or as part of private animal collections. The nightmare for many of these victims does not end with their capture in the wild but instead—if they don’t die in transit—continues for the rest of their life, up to 40 years. On top of wildlife trafficking, most of Africa's great ape populations are declining owing to habitat loss, bushmeat hunting, and disease. To end the ape crisis, we must first acknowledge that one exists. Public awareness campaigns around the ivory and rhino horn trade have driven media coverage that has spurred action by governments worldwide. The chimpanzees are in danger of dehydration and starvation. Please sign the petition to urge NYBC to reinstate funding for this chimpanzee colony before it’s too late! For years, NYBC used these chimpanzees in medical research, infecting many of them with hepatitis viruses. After decades of confinement, these chimpanzees do not have the skills to survive in the wild. They are completely reliant on humans for survival, but despite previously committing to the lifetime care of these chimpanzees, NYBC recently withdrew all funding for the care of the chimpanzees in March. Effectively they have left these poor chimpanzees to suffer from dehydration and starvation. The New York Blood Center is a large American organization that provides blood, develops blood related products, but it also conducts medical research. In the 1970's, NYBC worked with the Liberian Institute for Biomedical Research to create Vilab II to obtain and breed chimpanzees for use in medical research. After using and profiting from them for decades, NYBC decided the chimps were no longer needed for future research and retired them to small islands near the lab. NYBC publicly proclaimed their commitment to the lifetime care of the chimpanzees, but walked away from their ethical responsibility when they stopped all funding for the chimpanzees' care. We owe our thanks to the longtime caretakers who have continued to care for the chimpanzees voluntarily but this is not a sustainable solution for the chimpanzees or their caretakers. Without money to provide for the needs of these chimpanzees, they will suffer from dehydration and starvation. These chimps need your voice to survive so please sign my petition asking NYBC to fulfill their promise of lifetime care for these chimpanzees.
