Most of them have the last name of a famous athlete scrawled across the back. If you aren’t a sports fan, I know you’ve seen these wearable shrines. I’ll admit, I have a few of these jerseys among my wardrobe. Wearing them makes you feel one with the player and the team. You’re showing your support by dressing as your sporting heroes. You’re displaying your respect and admiration for all they have accomplished. At times your allegiance may even transcend the sport. Maybe you are a fan of an athlete because of what they stand for off of the field as much as their play on the field. What’s troubling is, I’m paying to wear the name of a person that I will never meet. They will never know me or even care that I admire them. In fact, if I met them in person and got to know them, I probably wouldn’t like them. That seems to go with celebrity, they are often unpleasant people. This is equaled by any famous person not just athletes. Actors, politicians, and performers may have talents we admire. We wear their name and image and support their cause, but we have no relationship with them. What if we approached fandom from a different perspective? What if you went down to your local t-shirt store (do they exist?? lets pretend they do) and ordered a slew of shirts with the last name of a person you know who is facing turmoil in their lives? Imagine visiting the bedside of a friend waging war against cancer wearing a shirt emblazoned with their name on the back. You admire and respect an elder in your congregation for the advice and guidance he has given you over the years, so you splay his name across your back. Real people you know and have a relationship with that deserve your respect and admiration. To carry it further, what if you plastered the name of your Savior across everything you wore? We are often proud to wear the colors of our favorite teams, but less comfortable wearing our faith on our back. We don’t backdown when proudly sporting our team’s jersey at an unfriendly away game, but do we do the same in a world which is unfriendly turf to all who love God? Are we afraid to proudly show our true colors, who we are deep down, far beyond a sports fan… a Jesus fan? I have no dispute with sports fans, I’m one myself. When I spend $75 to show my love for an athletic club I’m telling the world that my team is important to me. Isn’t it more important that I tell the world that Jesus is the most important thing to me? After all, He is someone I will meet one day and He knows the number of hairs on my head. This is bigger that what I choose to wear. This is about who I am, what I talk about, and how I support those in need. When I live for Jesus, not sports, the world we see my true colors and I might just have a chance of recruiting some more players to His team. How do you show your support for His team? ]]> /jersey.html/feed 2 Losing Your Grip on Life? Do you ever want to throw your hands in the air and give up… just walk away and find a dark corner to hide in? You’re not alone. We all face periods of discouragement. Spans of time when things just aren’t going right. Days when we wish we could go back to bed. Strife and turmoil ridden weeks when success seems desperately out of reach. Navigating these turbulent waves appears impossible. Our boat is taking on water and there is no land in sight. The seas get rougher by the minute and the anxiety is crippling. A desperate scan of the horizon reveals no hope. Seemingly, it’s inevitable that we will go down with the ship and be left to drown at the bottom of the sea of life. Life’s storms are turning points. The decisions we make when facing adversity will alter the course of our lives and the lives of those we love. These times that try our souls make or break us. But, real strength is only gained when muscles are pushed to their breaking point. Iron is sharpened not by a soft bed of moss, but by iron. Perseverance must be our watchword. We must maintain emotional acuity if we hope to ever emerge victorious. In his masterpiece, “If” Rudyard Kipling wrote, If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ Life’s curve balls prove we can’t emerge victorious without help. Our will to “Hold on!” is provided from on high. Though we often try, we don’t have the strength to go it alone. If our life is centered on serving God in all that we do, then we have help. Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Does this mean we will never fail? No. It means we can find the strength to face anything. When you’re losing your grip on life, “Hold On” and gain strength with these four techniques. Pray. Strengthen your relationship with God. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. No matter what you are failing in, if it’s purpose is for God’s glory, He will strengthen you. Study. Strengthen your faith. Read of the battles the brave men and women of the Bible endured for God. Wonder at the perfect life of our Savior and all He bore for you. Encourage. Strengthen your relationships with others. Share what you are going through with someone. Listen to their struggles. Pray with them and gain new courage realizing others are standing with you on the front lines of life. Exercise. Strengthen your physical body. Taking care of yourself gives you the stamina physically and emotionally to soldier on for Christ. You will be healthier and better prepared for a long life in His service. If you follow this simple workout plan, you will strengthen your grip and be able to hold on to God and His plan for your life no matter what you face. How do you find the strength to hold on? ]]> /losing-grip-life-hold-on.html/feed 1 Your Money or Your Life /money-life.html /money-life.html#comments Wed, 03 Oct 2012 10:00:21 +0000 /?p=5522 Jack Benny was one of the country’s top comedians in the Golden Age of Radio. His character was a penny-pincher that rarely parted with his precious money. A routine often revisited on the show is Jack being held up by a robber. The thief demands, “Your money or your life!” Jack responds with silence. Upon the criminal repeating his command Jack cries, “I’m thinking it over!” How would you respond in a similar situation? We would all quickly give all the money we have to save our lives. But, how do you respond to this demand in your daily life. When you are called upon to serve, do you respond with your money or your life? The accounts of many charities and churches are overflowing. They have money to do great things. What they lack are enough people who are willing to devote their life in service. Throwing money at a problem is the easy solution. We leave the answers to someone else. Money can be the salve to sooth our guilty souls. We rationalize that we have made a sacrifice by giving financially not realizing that cash is often secondary to the cause. When asked the greatest commandment, Jesus replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” All of the Law hangs on one word… LOVE. Not money! What does this love for God demand? Is it filling the church treasury? While financial support for the church may be part of it, what God wants is for us to be about His work, which demands our LIFE… our TIME. Is that putting money in the collection each week and then leaving the heavy lifting to someone else? That doesn’t sound like loving with all of your heart, soul, and mind. That’s avoiding responsibility with money. The same way a father may spoil his children to allay his guilty conscience for not giving them the time they need. The second command is to love our neighbor… in the same way we love ourselves. How do we show love for ourselves? Buy spending time doing the things we enjoy. That’s what we are to give our neighbor… our time. It’s not just donating money when a member of our church is in need, but preparing a meal and going to their home and visiting with them. It’s not handing a struggling family $20 and quickly rushing by, but being a friend… talking and praying with them and helping them overcome the obstacles in their lives. Money will always be a necessity, but when we value it more than relationships our perspective is skewed. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” Giving up your life has nothing to do with money and everything to do with what you value most… your time. Share this time by showing love, friendship, and support and you will accomplish far more than a fortune ever could. ]]> /money-life.html/feed 2 Perspective vs. Reality – Who Wins? /perspective-vs-reality-wins.html /perspective-vs-reality-wins.html#respond Mon, 30 Jul 2012 10:00:37 +0000 /?p=3889 A cursory evaluation of the world we live in is terrifying. Everywhere we look, it seems, we see man and nature racing against one other for one purpose… to kill us. Death is ushered into life through sociopaths, terrorists, and natural disasters. It makes some of us want to hole-up in the safety of our homes, until we hear of the latest home invasion. Our perspective becomes skewed. There is no safe room. Every place and every person are a threat to our lives. We become consumed with “what if” and reject “what is.” If we allow our perspective and reality to battle “Mano-a-Mano”, who emerges the victor? Who lasts the 10 rounds and comes out on top? Usually… perspective. Our inaccurate perspective becomes reality in our eyes. Every stranger is a killer, every foreigner a terrorist, and every storm cloud a tornado. We shatter our rose-colored glasses and examine the world through a magnifying glass. We enlarge the bad and myopically overlook the good in people and nature, both blessings from God. Think about it, why are mass-murders, terrorist attacks, and natural disasters so mind-numbing to us? Because they are rare. They don’t happen every day, but when they do, they are major news items. We become transfixed and must read and watch, in horror, every detail. In turn, we begin to believe that these tragedies await us around every corner. We ignore reality. The innumerable days that have passed without incident. The kindness we have received from complete strangers, the lessons we have learned from people from far off lands, and the breathtaking handiwork that God has surrounded us with. God be praised, most of us will never be the victim of a violent crime or natural disaster. Many of us, however, fear we will. 20% of Americans worry about being murdered. From their perspective, the chances of it happening are high, but reality is only 1 in 18,690 people will become victims. The odds of becoming a terrorist victim on an airline flight are 1 in 10,408,947 yet 36% of Americans fear themselves or a family member becoming a victim of terrorism. Like an artist who is too close to his canvas and steps away to view the entire painting, aligning his perspective with reality, we need to take a step back and view life accurately. Do bad things happen every day? Yes! Does that mean they will happen to you? Absolutely not! Does that mean we throw caution to the wind? No, but irrational fear, stress, and worry lead to high blood pressure and heart disease, and possibly early death. When our perspective alters reality, we live irrational, unproductive lives. We fail to act even in the smallest ways. Our perspective is that we are just one person and there is very little we can do in our small corner of the world. We lose sight of the fact that it takes just one person to change the world, for good. If we aren’t careful, our perspective of God can be skewed in the process. We see all of the bad in the world and begin to question Him and His creation. We must never do this, because there is nothing more real than God’s Love. This indisputable fact should align your perspective with reality. Despite the problems we face every day, God loves each and every one of us and will never stop. So, when you begin to lose touch with reality through a skewed perspective, race back to the arms of God and the reality of His everlasting love. How do you keep your perspective from altering your view of reality? ]]> /perspective-vs-reality-wins.html/feed 0 3 Remedies For A Leaky Heart Valve /3-remedies-leaky-heart-valve.html /3-remedies-leaky-heart-valve.html#respond Mon, 16 Jul 2012 10:00:20 +0000 /?p=3868 A leaky heart valve can be a serious medical condition. However, if the leaky valve interferes too much with normal blood flow, congestive heart failure can occur. The 4 valves of the heart control the flow of blood as it moves through the chambers of the heart. Since the heart is the distribution system of this vital substance to all parts of the body, it is essential that it is kept operating properly. Like our physical heart valves, our emotional “heart valves” regulate the flow of our affections. If these valves begin to leak, the vital flow of compassion, service, patience, and joy are interrupted. Not only is our emotional heart damaged, those that are fed by this fundamental flow suffer as well. Our heart valve leaks when we fail to channel our time, talent, and resources to where they are needed most, others. We may “leak” a dribble of ourselves to those that need us, but it isn’t enough to do them any good. While this is occurring the health of our emotional heart suffers. It’s working overtime to serve one purpose, gratifying ourselves. This may seem rewarding, but this neglect actually engorges the heart so that it demands more and more. We end up completely unhealthy. Our heart is swollen with our excesses while our other vital organs, humanity, suffer from the anemic concern they are given. This condition demands immediate treatment. Similar to the way the medical condition is approached, the leak needs to be plugged and the flow of blood needs to be channeled in the right direction. We can easily diagnose a leaky valve by simply listening to the sounds of our hearts. Place a stethoscope to your heart and listen carefully. If your conversation and time is dominated by your wants and desires, you’ve got a leaky valve. The repair of the physical aortic regurgitation will result in improved physical health. Similarly, restoring our emotional hearts will advance our spiritual health. Here are 3 Remedies for A Leaky Heart Valve: Medicine. The heart can be renewed by filling it with the restorative power of God’s word. When we meditate on the selfless love of our Lord and Savior our hearts can be healed. Open your heart and allow the restorative power of this drug to flow through it. Repair. Through diligent prayer and constant effort we can repair the leak in our heart. This is an invasive procedure which demands deep soul searching. For this remedy to be effective, you must be willing to alter your behavior and be prepared to reexamine its health daily. Replacement. This is the most extreme treatment, but may be necessary. Your heart valve may have become so unhealthy that it needs replacement. You just might need to tear yourself down so you can be built up again. Similar to the life of Jesus, his journey wasn’t completed until his physical life was destroyed and then begun anew. When your heart is functioning properly it can effectively serve others far better than yourself. Monitor it daily to make sure there are no leaky valves. I would guess, depending on where you live, this has never happened to you. You’ve not had to choose between helping the victim of a violent crime and passing on the other side of the street. Aiding a person in this situation is the perfect example of showing love to your neighbor. Taking the time and risk to help is true sacrifice and the ultimate fulfillment of Jesus’ admonition. It is love in action. Society has evolved dramatically since Jesus first shared the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Most of us don’t journey on foot through wilderness and expose ourselves to bands of robbers. We travel in the safety of our locked cars, or in the company of hundreds of commuters on public transportation. Even if there is a problem, help is usually nearby and we can leave the helpless in the hands of the police or some other form of public assistance. It seems, opportunities to love our neighbor are dwindling. Our Great Society has taken care of our problems. Is there anything an individual can do to aide his neighbor anymore? Of course there is! In fact, it has never been easier. Even as relationships continue to fragment as we isolate ourselves from one another in the comfort of our homes, there are more opportunities for us to use modern technology to love our neighbors. Here are 3 ways to use technology to expand your neighborhood and serve more. 1. Financial support – Fundraising websites have made it convenient and secure to help people financially across the world. The days of extended correspondence and writing checks and waiting for them to clear are fading in the rear view mirror. Almost instantaneously, a need can be shared and money can be raised. It may not even be someone we know directly, but we can become a member of their tribe through a common connection. We can help a neighbor we have never met and may never know. 2. Awareness – Social tools like email, Facebook, and Twitter have simplified communicating needs to multiple people at one time. Depending on the number of contacts or “friends” you have, you can share a need with hundreds of people with one click. This opens the door for others to serve in areas they would never know of otherwise. You can love your neighbor simply by informing people about a need. 3. Adoption – There have always been an abundance of orphans needing loving homes. In the United States, we are blessed with a system that ensures these children have a safe place to stay and plenty to eat. Although less than ideal, they are at least protected and off the streets. Most children across the world don’t enjoy this luxury. Many live in filthy conditions with little food and even less love. It has never been easier to reach an orphan in a third world country and make them a part of your home. Travel is now relatively easy to destinations that were once near impossible to reach. We can work through the safety of adoption service websites and view pictures of the children in need. As Jesus concluded the parable of the Good Samaritan he asked the lawyer, “So which of these do you think was a neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” He answered, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” Today, there are so many ways to show mercy… so many ways to use technology to love our neighbors. Find one that fits you and get to work. Your community will grow and you will have neighbors all over the world. What other ways can you use technology to show mercy on your neighbor? ]]> /3-ways-love-neighbor-technology.html/feed 0 There is No Freedom, We are All Slaves /freedom-slaves.html /freedom-slaves.html#comments Mon, 02 Jul 2012 10:00:17 +0000 /?p=3847 There is no freedom in life. As much as the patriots of our great land may deny it, life is about servitude. We are bound as slaves in our mortal coils. We have no choice. Man’s inclination is certainly not to be anyone’s servant. Much blood has been shed for independence and liberty. Brother has killed brother over the very concept of slavery and its consequences. But God makes it clear that our time on His great blue marble is captivity. We are each obligated to bondage, but the good news is, we can choose our master. We can select who we are bound to and who we serve. We are not forced into the relationship. In fact we have been purchased by our true Master. A great price has been paid, but many run away from Him to serve another that makes empty promises of freedom, rights, and tolerance. Our true Master has one simple promise, life everlasting. The other, a great liar, promises a temporary life of fulfillment, pleasure, and satisfaction, but his reward for your service is eternal death: permanent separation from your true Master and from His promises of eternity with Him. Our true Master expects hard work, dedication, and our undying commitment. He is honest and tells us how difficult the work will be. The other promises a life of ease and riches. Not only can he not deliver what he promises, his service results in great dissatisfaction, depression, and misery. Everyday we have the choice of who we will serve. No one binds us in chains and forces us to bow the knee in front of them, but our decision can bind us. It is our choice who we kneel before, but you better believe we submit to one or the other. We either yield to the will of our true Master or abandon Him and run to the other. We bow before him as he promises all our heart desires. The wiles in his armory can even trick us into thinking we are serving the true Master by corrupting His message. Like an evil advisor we listen to him telling us what God expects, wants, or offers, rather than going to the Source and finding out what He desires, deserves, and promises… all clever manipulation. Our loyalty will be seen in our actions. Or service to our true Master will result in serving others. We will live to serve. Ministry to the other will result in living only to ourselves. Jesus makes it clear there is no middle ground. “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” You must choose this day whom you will serve. Who will it be? I hear them most often when I’m doing what I call singing, and usually utter them when my boys are tearing the house apart. It certainly has a negative connotation. Something is annoying us and we want it to cease and desist, immediately, so we share our opinion, often accompanied with yelling. The please portion is not a requirement. In fact, it’s probably rarely used. It’s an additional word that prolongs the suffering, so we shorten it to just “STOP!” It may be impolite, but we get our point across in one simple word. This curt phrase has positive applications as well. There’s tremendous suffering in our communities that we have within our power to quell. All it takes is for us to act. Here’s a list of 7 kinds of suffering people you know are dealing with, along with an extra bonus of solutions to the problems. Please, stop… 1. Hunger – In your community, there are thousands of people without the basic needs of life. You can fill several empty stomachs with a small donation. Better yet, you can fill those same hearts with the food that will never leave them hungry. Share the Good News of Jesus with those with famished souls. 2. Loneliness – Be a friend to the friendless. We all know people who have no one to talk with. Take time and show them you care. While you’re at it, introduce them to a friend who will never leave their side, Jesus. 3. Homelessness – Homelessness is not just for the outcasts of society any more. People in your neighborhood and those you sit next to at work are facing foreclosure. Open you home to them, provide them with a place to stay while they get back on their feet. Bring them into your church family. Give them a refuge from the perils of life. 4. Fear – Uncertainty in life can be paralyzing. When we know there’s hope for the future we sleep better at night. Give someone promise for tomorrow. Share your blessings. Relieve their fear by sharing the joy that comes from knowing the Lord. 5. Depression – One of the the great pandemics of society today is depression. The stress of life becomes overwhelming and many see no hope for the future. Help people navigate this storm by giving them perspective. Although they may be in the midst of a downpour, help them see the silver lining in the clouds. Give them hope for tomorrow in the promise of a glorious eternity with Jesus Christ. 6. Strife – We all have the friend to whom bad things always happen. It seems if something can go wrong it always happens to them. Their life is filled with turmoil and trouble. Provide a place of stability for them. Be a rock they can lean on and help them to stand by providing a firm foundation of friendship. Show them the peace that comes from the hand of Almighty God. 7. Doubt – Like fear, doubt, leaves people dreading tomorrow. They begin to ponder the meaning of life and if they serve any purpose. Suicide may even creep into their thoughts as they see no reason in living another day. Show them their value in your life and the lives of those around them. Help them understand life is most gratifying when we are serving others. Teach them that God knows them personally and how in Him each day has new meaning. Look at the suffering around you and shout, “Please, Stop!” It’s within your power to change lives and change the world. What else can you do to stop the pain in peoples’ lives? ]]> /suffering-you-can-stop.html/feed 0 Are Your Relationships Focused on the “Big Fish”? /big-one.html /big-one.html#respond Mon, 18 Jun 2012 10:00:25 +0000 /?p=3779 Our desire is usually for the biggest and the best. We have been convinced by advertising and the world around us to never settle, always look for something bigger and better. This is how my boys and I approach fishing. Every time we hit the pond we hope to reel in a really big fish. Unfortunately, we haven’t hooked that trophy bass yet, so we are always looking for new techniques, baits, and locations to help us reel in larger fish. Still, most of our catches are pretty small. Life is a lot like fishing. Whether we recognize it or not, we are always casting our line of relationship. Each person we encounter decides whether to take our bait or move on to something more tempting. We are always hoping to reel in a “big fish”, but they are few and far between. These “big fish” are the friendships that we deem rewarding because of what they provide to us. They usually involve little work and lots of fun. We like our bonds to be pleasant, free of turmoil and trauma. Often, unintentionally, we hook people we measure as “small fish.” A relationship begins to develop that we weren’t looking for. It’s takes up a lot of our time and is unpleasant. Maybe the person is too needy and we don’t want to take time to help with their problems. We relate briefly, but then seek to throw them back in the pond as quickly as we can. We determine our time is better spent somewhere else: with the “big fish” we have already caught, or out seeking a better catch. We seek relationships where we can receive rather than give. However, those “small fish” that grab hold of our lines have an acute need for strong, giving relationships. They have troubles in their lives they don’t know how to deal with. They are hoping desperately that we will help. Your bait was appealing and they have grabbed on and won’t let go. Are you avoiding these “small fish” so you can focus on the “trophies” you already have on your wall? Are you releasing despondent people that need your companionship because the affiliation lacks a pleasant fragrance? Are you focusing on relationships that give rather than take? Life’s not about what we need, it’s about who needs us… a life we can touch by casting in their direction. We need to reel in those fish that need us and grow the relationship into one we can proudly display. When we focus on our needs, the needs of others go unmet. We can miss opportunities to change peoples lives and help them grow. Keep the fish you catch, despite their size. Feed them. Nurture them. Help them grow into trophies. Then, teach them to fish. Show them mercy, so they can go out and do likewise. How do you nurture the “small fish” you reel in? ]]> /big-one.html/feed 0 Is God Your Backup Plan? /god-backup-plan.html /god-backup-plan.html#respond Mon, 11 Jun 2012 10:00:11 +0000 /?p=3740 I’m very cautious when it comes to my electronic files. Having a hard drive crash will make you that way. I meticulously backup my files to ensure I am protected in case of a computer nightmare. I rely on my primary hard drive for accessing and saving my daily work. I trust that it will operate properly, but not completely, that’s why I have a backup. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had a failure, but those were catastrophic times. I didn’t always have backups to save the day. My backup is just that, a place to go in case of emergency. My first resort is my primary drive, if that fails, I access my back-up and life is rosy again. I’ve got a backup plan in place. Is God your backup plan? Do you turn to Him only in case of emergency? Too many of us rely on ourselves or other people rather than on God as a first line of defense in this world. We may not even consider God until things become dire and we need a backup to restore order to the lives we have crashed. We turn to doctors to repair our broken bodies, counselors to mend our battered marriages, and self-help books to save our bankrupt spirits. Then, if these things don’t work, we turn to God. That, my friends, makes God our back-up. If we can’t fix our problem or if we can’t find someone else who can, then we turn to God. We make Him the “In Case of Emergency” alarm on the wall. When our problems become too big, we pull the alarm hoping to have Him rush in to our rescue. Don’t get me wrong, medical science can do wondrous things, counselors can provide great advice, and the experience of man is a great resource, but none of them trump God. God should be our primary source for restoration, repair, and salvation. Long before and long after man and his solutions is God. As Genesis 1:1 tells us, “In the beginning, God…” Bring this powerful statement into your life each day and gain reassurance in the existence and power of God as your first option. Dwell on these things: 1. In the Past, God… Meditate on what God has done. Look at how He has gotten you through the times your life has crashed. 2. In the Present, God… Consider what God is actively doing in your life now. The new day He has granted and the air with which your lungs continually swell. 3. In the future, God… Put tomorrow in God’s hands. Worry only begats more worry. The sooner we learn to trust God and His plan for our lives, our primary hard drive, the better off we will be. Never relegate God to the roll of back-up in your life. Keep Him in the foreground and the troubles of life will fade into the background. They will become unimportant when compared to His power and love. Let go and let God. My brother decided, after years of sharing a room with me, he wanted his own place. Now, that place was just across the hall, but it was a million miles away to me. I was heartbroken. What had I done? Why wouldn’t he want to go on living with me forever? The delusions of a younger brother, I know, but it was agonizing. Now, I hadn’t done anything. My brother still loved me, as much as a pre-teen boy can love his adoring younger brother, but he wanted his own room. One of the luxuries of our modern age is space. Not the far reaching universe explored by daring astronauts, “personal space”… what my brother wanted. Just a couple of generations ago, families, even extended families, lived in homes composed of one large room. Everyone was very close, physically, there was very little privacy, and almost everything was shared… from clothes and shoes to chairs and beds. You always had someone next to you, invading your personal space. This idea of “space” is a relatively new concept. It’s a product of our blessings. As we attain more, we spread out and want the independent area to do our own thing. In essence, the more we acquire, the further removed we become. Most people I know dream of a day when they can have enough money to move out of the suburbs and get some land. They are tired of the zero-lot lined subdivisions or apartments in which so many of us live. They want to get away from the crowds, from the people, and be out on their own. They don’t want isolation, they just want to be able to chose when to invite people into their world, their space, and when to keep them out. How many people do you know who buy a big house on a large tract of land so they can “entertain”, yet, they never do? Being hospitable and interacting takes a lot of work, especially when you have a big house to prepare and clean afterward. It’s not like having the neighbors over for coffee, everything become a big production. This reverse of this concept was recently a reality for me. My family attended a conference that required us to share a one-room hotel room and, worse yet, one bathroom. I was really dreading this. I just knew we would drive each other crazy, but it was actually wonderful. We were together, in one small room, at the dawn and close of each day. We talked and laughed and no one was able to go to their room and close the door. There was no personal space, no isolation. We shared everything, a TV, a bathroom, and beds. We grew closer emotionally through the physical proximity. These few days helped me realize this concept of having our own space is driving a wedge in our relationships. Our efforts to be by ourselves keeps us from intimately knowing those around us, from sharing the defeats and victories in our lives, and prevents us from serving one another. How can we reach those that need us most, physically and spiritually, if we are separating ourselves? As we are blessed, we need to think of greater ways to serve others, bring us closer, rather that spreading out. This will mean less personal space and independence, but will reap greater personal rewards than an empty 50 room mansion ever will. How do you balance personal space with building relationships? ]]> /give-space.html/feed 0 Life is Good? Depending on the day, depending on your mood, your answer may vary. Each day we live, life presents new opportunities and challenges. One day is filled with joy and celebration, while the next is beset with grief and mourning. That’s life… through and through. We don’t control the assignments life hands us. We wake up in the morning and our inbox is full. We can’t go through the paperwork and pull out the things we want to face and throw the others in the trash. We have to deal with the good and the bad. It can often seem that the requirements of each day are insurmountable. Day after day, the burden becomes heavier until we are physically stooped under its weight. Our attitude and outlook begins to tarnish. Sunny days are filled with rain. Dark clouds hover over us wherever we go. We grow negative, pessimistic, and angry toward life. We are consumed with what is wrong, not what has gone right. We are like the Children of Israel after God had performed wondrous signs and freed them from their captivity. We complain and obsess over the journey ahead forgetting who delivered us to this point in our life. Our faith is evaporated. We refuse to look at what God has done and continues to do, we myopically focus on our current condition and say, “Why me?” We may not have control over the lemons we are handed in life, but we determine what we do with them. We can bite into life and pucker at it’s bitter taste or sweeten a sour situation with the proper outlook and make life more palatable. Effective living is all about attitude, perspective, and most importantly faith. If we wake up each morning with a heart of acceptance, understanding our purpose in life and God’s plan for us, we can better handle the challenges we face. Start each day completing the sentence in a uplifting manner. There is a bumper sticker I like that states it pretty simply… Life is Good. After all, life comes from God. We read in Genesis 1 that looking upon his creation he saw that it was VERY GOOD. Who are we to question Him and the works of His hand? This needs to be the vision for our lives. Go out and make it good. It’s within your power, no matter your situation, to make life good. Prioritize your perspective and order your life properly.

The fact that the described scenario was not some made up plot just to provoke undue paranoia but was a typical case of routine patrol and enemy sub hunting tactics! The Bedford is under NATO command as it patrols the north Atlantic through iceberg laden waters in the vicinity of the Arctic Circle. Captain Finlander, played by Richard Widmark has a reputation for pursuit of enemy subs and near Cuba, she shadowed one of the Soviet diesel driven submarines until he forced them to surface after running over the snorkel the crew needed to breath with. Now, the obsessive captain sees another opportunity to snare another Soviet sub that they’ve discovered has nukes!Mister Munson, played by Sydney Portiere, the onboard journalist senses that the captain is one hard driving and obsessive skipper who will stop at nothing to achieve his goal. That goal is to paralyze and force Soviets to surface their subs wherever they violate NATO allied waters. But, there’s a problem with this genius US Naval officer was in line to become admiral but was passed over, and Mister Munson wants to know why. Aboard the ship is a Navy Medical Officer played by Martin Balsam, a former German U-Boat commander, Eric Portman, as a Commodore acting as an adviser, and a young maritime biologist aboard the Bedford by the name of Donald Sutherland. This all-star cast of supporting actors serve to solidify the believability of the script. At the time of the movie, all Soviet submarines, even those with nuclear weapons, were driven by diesel fueled engines and had to rely on snorkels that could be spotted on the surface when the underwater vessel was submerged but needed air for the crew. If they could be shadowed long enough by a destroyer even ramming their snorkel, the crew would be forced to surface! Captain Finlander (Richard Widmark) will push his crew and himself beyond d their limits while starting a 24 hour timer on the bridge of the ship that will reveal just how long he has kept the Soviet sub under the waves and eventually starving for air! Martin Balsam, the ship’s doctor, informs the captain that he’s driving his men too hard, and is severely reprimanded by Finlander who has read his file, knows of his numerous divorces, and his need to return to active duty as a result, humiliating his ship’s doctor. The Captain does this to anyone unlucky enough to meet his disapproval!During the course of the mission one of his bridge officers, a young Ensign Ralston, played by James MacArthur, is pressured and ridden by Captain Finlander throughout the mission which causes the executive officer to confront the captain in order to lighten up on the young crewman. Whenever confronted with his own bluff, Finlander tends to soften up and back off with a subtle warning. As for Mister Munson, the journalist, the relationship becomes antagonistic as the captain is obsessive about secretive areas of the ship that Sydney Portiere’s character does not have authorization for. Mister Munson calls out the captain on several occasions about his tactics and dangerous provocation of the enemy! The tension increases with the crew under full time alert. A sonar technician man, Wally Cox, normally rock solid man that the captain relies on as his go to specialist succumbs to a nervous breakdown and has to be replaced as he is relieved to sick bay! The hours and minutes tick away as the Captain determinedly shadows and hunts down the Soviet sub but exhausts his crew while doing it! Sydney Portiere’s character sees the signs all around him of a destroyer personnel who are being driven to a fever’s pitch. Then, the clock shows 14 hours have elapsed but they have lost the Soviet sub in the clutter of icebergs. The captain consults with his former U-Boat onboard consultant who advises him to let the Soviet crew go, after all he is the hunter, but it may be time to let go!After receiving order confirmation by NATO command to take action according to his own discretion, the Captain orders weapons ready once the snorkel of the Soviet sub is spotted on the surface, but they had departed from the water they violated and are about to get away. Young Ensign Ralston who has activated the anti-missile weapons controls becomes the tragic weak link in the chain of command ridden into submission and all too willing to keep from making another mistake, but over hearing the captain who is speaking to Mister Munson and another officer, he launches the deadly anti-ship missile! Captain Finlander shoves the Ensign Ralston out of the way and pulls the de-arming switch to try and stop the missile, but it’s too late. The ordnance does its job and the Soviet sub is destroyed with the crew momentarily applauding the successful kill, but there’s a problem. The sonar man who replaced Wally Cox’s character picks up a contact at 1500 yards and closing! The Naval sonar technician is tracking a Soviet nuclear torpedo that was launched just before they were destroyed and it’s on the way. Captain Eric Finlander orders typical counter measures, “Right full rudder, all ahead flank!” he then leaves the bridge ominously with the look of a doomed man on his face realizing his actions have led to what comes next, all the while pursued by Sydney Portiere’s journalist character demanding, “What’s next? What the hell do we do now?”Ominously Mister Munson’s desperate inquiry is answered by a steaming mushroom cloud in the North Atlantic! A full nuclear detonation vaporizes the USS Bedford and its crew! The culmination of a deadly duel in the tensions of the Cold War between a compulsive Captain and his opponent, a Soviet nuclear sub crew, has ended in mutually assured destruction! The audience who watched this story of potential annhilation see the ultimate end game of an arm’s race that threatens the extinction of the human race being played real time all across the globe! The grim realization was undeniable! The US Navy refused to back the movie and even lend the actual bridge of any US warship to the film crew adding that to depict any US Naval officer in such a mentally distraught state leading to a disaster could not be supported! Instead of the supposed location of the incident occurring at the Denmark Straight, most of the filming occurred in warm Caribbean waters onboard a British warships.Filming Ships & Location DetailsExterior ship: HMS Wakeful (F159) provided the opening and exterior shots standing in for the USS Bedford.Interior ship: HMS Troubridge was used for below-decks and interior corridor scenes (leaving British equipment like Lee-Enfield rifles visible).Studio & Models: Additional scenes and a large model of the ship were filmed in a water tank at Shepperton Studios in the UK and Malta Film Studios.Fictional setting (waters): The plot takes place in the North Atlantic Ocean, specifically in the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland. Over the frightening atmosphere of the Cold War, Us reconnaissance planes were shot down by Soviet fighter jets while a cat and mouse game between the US and Russian surface fleets and American nuclear submarines was constantly at play. The Russian Kursk and the USS Scorpion were both sunk under questionable circumstances, and today with the Iran conflict, the ongoing 4 year war between Ukraine and Russia, threats of tactical nukes have been made by Putin’s generals! See More]]> Wed, 14 Oct 2026 19:07:05 +0000 1191209948 Doc Vega posted a blog post Doc Vega posted a blog postHaven't Always Agreed With Him But Bill Maher Get's It Right!See More]]> Tue, 13 Oct 2026 07:23:12 +0000 1191204867 tjdavis posted videos tjdavis posted videos ]]> Mon, 12 Oct 2026 15:18:42 +0000 1191189564 cheeki kea commented on cheeki kea's photo cheeki kea commented on cheeki kea's photoOil News ( not good )]]> Sat, 10 Oct 2026 10:55:40 +0000 1191186887 Doc Vega posted a blog post Doc Vega posted a blog postThe Death Doll-Halloween Story Two Retired Major Lionel Eldridge was browsing items in a bazaar of relics, antiques, and curios when he happened upon a strange artifact. It was a pale doll with darkened eyes. It was attempting to be a darling little girl partially wrapped in a shawl. In a way he was reminded of the little girl in a tragic Christmas story who burned matches on a cold winter’s night as she stared into a store front window for gifts she would never live to receive. Lionel was tired of walking side by side with loneliness. His family gone, wife dead of tuberculosis, and all after 25 years of loyal service to Her Royal Majesty’s Army. He’d retired with a pension good enough to live on and at 49 years of age, he still had a life left to live, but for whom and what?He touched the porcelain figure that seemed strangely life-like among the tables of other statuettes, trinkets, and simple gifts, lost in his typically reminiscent thoughts when a short, brown skinned man approached him. He seemed humble enough, his hands folded together, his robe typically pastel colored, and his black mustache that was pursed into a smile. “May I be of help Offendi?”Lionel Eldridge emerged from his inner thoughts and glanced at the small man, “I was merely intrigued by this lonely little girl. Who does this doll represent?”“In the customs of my people such dolls are spiritual entities of sorts there to address matters of one’s own state of the soul. She can be a companion with which to fight loneliness. She can merge with your soul as you dream and talk with you about your innermost struggles. She can be the partner from another world never meant to be in this dimension which you occupy.”“So, what’s the point, old man, having a companion that only exists in another realm?” Lionel frowned.“In my culture, these dolls might become surrogates for remedying the grief of a mother who lost a child, a father who has no family left, or of one who desires a lover, but remains alone against his or her will,” the unusual little man explained.“How odd,” the former major replied.“Is it no coincidence that you were drawn to this figurine for some reason you may not completely understand yet?” He smiled humbly.Willing to explore the unusual avenue of the foreign and unexplained, Lionel made a decision,” I think I’ll take it,” he sighed resolutely.“I think you will find this to be fascinating, Offendi. Shall I wrap this for you?”“Yes, of course,” Lionel nodded nervously as if he were embarrassed to have made such an impulsive decision.Lionel glanced at the hand written receipt with the words, “All sales Final” on it. In other words, no refund! He thought that to be odd, “Why the all sales final, on the ticket?”“Oh, Offendi, this is a custom of my people. Once such a doll is exchanged, it can never be returned to the giver.”“I see,” Lionel frowned as he turned to leave.“Oh, and Offendi, make sure that if you ever give this doll away, that you never take it back.”“Why?”“It is considered to be bad luck to the giver,” the Indian merchant smiled nervously and bowed. It was late afternoon and the winter sun was quickly descending into the London skyline. Lionel unlocked his door and strolled tiredly into his flat. His place seemed sad and overlooked by the rest of the world. Dreary furniture, aging framed paintings hung on the walls, mementos of a happier past that seemed somehow irrelevant in the present. He glanced around to make sure everything was normal, lit the fire beneath the burner of a now cold stew left over from earlier this morning, and unwrapped the unusual figure he had been foolishly fascinated over, thinking it would soon be among his collection of forgotten collectibles, but instead he sat down with it and stared into its intriguingly beautiful yet ominous face. “Perhaps you’re as lonely as I.” he murmured and sat it next to the end table alongside his bed.Lionel went to stir his beef and vegetable stew to savor before he got ready for bed. He had fought in many places defending the colonies of the crown from Burma to India, from the Caribbean to Eastern Europe. He had seen many men die, lost many dear friends, and spent long periods away from the woman he longed to share the rest of his life with, but even there, once it was all over, fate had cheated him when his wife contracted TB. It was as though everything and everyone he valued had been robbed from his life. His daughter lived another life somewhere across the world and never approved of the life he had committed himself to as did his son. Curious how the very ones you love simply slipped away in the course of life, he sadly concluded. He sat at the edge of his bed oblivious to the smell of sheets that could have used a freshening up and held the doll in his hands once more before retiring to the land of dreams. What a ridiculous substitute for companionship, he concluded as he gazed at her and then set her back down onto the end table next to the lamp. Lionel exhaustedly plunged into a deep dark crevice of dreamland, hopelessly lost in a death-like sleep. Yet, a strange thing happened. Before him a beautiful young lady with a shawl barely wrapped around her. Her white shoulders and slender arms visible. She stared hypnotically into his eyes and then dropped the shawl revealing her angelic figure! She held his face in her hands along with his unwavering attention and undressed him. There they made passionate love until he awoke gasping for breath with beads of sweat on his brow and a moist chest as though he had actually been in the act!The retired major glanced to his left and looked into the face of the doll and thought that it was actually watching him! That startled him! He then glanced again and the doll had reverted back to what it was supposed to be! He breathed deeply to calm himself down! There was simply no logical explanation for this! He had just made love in another dimension to the spirit of this doll? Was that it? Was this what the funny little shop owner had been trying to explain to him? He got up slowly, walked to the kitchen, and reached up into a cupboard producing a bottle of brandy. He poured himself a couple of drinks, gulping down and savoring the warmth of the liquor while trying to make sense of it all.The next day, Lionel stopped by the local “caff”. It was the “Piccadilly Eatery” and grabbed a corner table among those who were indulging in tea and crumpets, perhaps fish and chips, or shepherd’s pie, and glanced at the menu. Ann, a young widow, attractive yet shy, had arrived, but had to search for a table being that the lunch hour was in full swing and the buzz of patrons talking amongst themselves made it even more intimidating, when she spotted a single chair unoccupied. She nervously approached unsure of herself. “Sir, I hate to intrude, but is this seat taken?”“Why not at all,” Lionel stood and pulled the chair backward to help her sit down.“I’m so sorry. It’s just that I couldn’t find anything else available,” Ann apologized.“Don’t even mention it. You are welcome Dear lady,” Lionel smiled.“I am famished,” Ann explained. “I picked a bad time to be searching for a place to eat.”The two made some small talk as Ann awaited her chicken salad sandwich order while Lionel ordered clam chowder and crackers. It seemed they both enjoyed each other’s company. Ann explained that she owned a small dress shop and worked as a seamstress there after the untimely death of her husband and sudden rejection by his family that left her with little money to start a business. It seemed they had much in common. Before they both knew it 2 hours had flown by with Lionel asking her if she ever did tailoring or repair for men and she said yes! “Well, how convenient,” Lionel grinned. “I shall bring a couple items of mine that could use repair.”“I would be honored,” Ann smiled delighted to be able to see him again. When the waitress came with their tickets, Lionel snatched Ann’s bill from the table, “Allow me, Dear!”“Oh, I can’t let you do that,” Ann blushed.“Don’t worry, I shall expect the finest quality of work from you then,” Lionel smiled amiably.“Forgive me, Sir, but I’m not accustomed to such generosity,” Ann blushingly explained. “I must say though that I feel that I’ve known you for a long time.”“You have, you have!” Lionel assured her. “How about I stop by tomorrow late morning. Would that be convenient?”“I will make a special arrangement to accommodate you then and there, besides many of my customers who drop there items off will wait weeks before returning.”This told Lionel that the poor young lady was often pressed for cash flow. When he got home he quickly went about gathering several of his jackets and slacks that he would see that she could make money working on no matter if they needed work or not. He’d make sure that she made some money!”Was this doll a good luck charm or what or what? Lionel thought as he climbed into his bed and glancing at the doll, clicked off his lamp, and plunged into the dark waters of dream land once again! As he slept he felt the warmth and smooth skin of a young body climbing on top of his. He felt the sensation of warm kisses, a tongue in his ear, and the gentle bite upon his neck, and he was aroused as the two intertwined and made love in the privacy of his dreams once again. He writhed in his bed sheets and passionately wrestling with the youthful body that sent chills into his erotic senses. Once again, Lionel awoke breathless and spent as though he had just reached the climax of his life! This was uncanny! How could this have been possible, he thought as he lay wide awake and glanced over at the nymph sitting on his end table. Was this satanical, a blessing, or the work of his lonely imagination?Over the next few days the intensity of Lionel’s interest in Ann continued and the two of them had made time to share lunches together. Lionel could tell Ann was most likely 29 to 32 years of age, in his estimation not too young for him if she were interested in romance. Ann found Lionel to be a true gentlemen unlike younger men, brash, pushy, and bad listeners. Lionel was patient, and attentive, this she found refreshing, and he hadn’t even made a move on her yet which she was surprised over, but she wanted this to take time anyway. He had mentioned being in the military but hadn’t used that as a demonstration of his manhood or as a bragging right. As a matter of fact, she had no idea the kind of action he had seen, and didn’t know how badly he was trying to distance himself from it. All in all, the two seemed a good match for each other. Lionel was not too old for her at all, she felt safe in his presence. He exuded a quiet and unassuming confidence that she could feel.Again, Lionel came home alone and back to the familiarity of his quiet isolationistic existence but for this bewitching doll that he knew would enchant his dreams once again. In a very strange way, Lionel felt like somehow he was committing unfaithfulness for some uncanny reason that defied all logic. Never the less, Ann was the best thing that had happened to his waking existence in years and when the question of her coming over to his place to spend some time, Lionel welcomed the opportunity, but first he had to do some major cleaning up as he didn’t want to seem like a typical sloppy bachelor. So, he made up an excuse to delay her from coming over until he’d had a couple days to do come cleaning and organizing especially washing his bedding!Once again after an exhausting day of house cleaning, Lionel rewarded himself with some brandy and after a phone conversation with Ann, got ready for bed. The only thing he hadn’t cleaned, organized or hidden, was the doll that seemed to be glaring at him from time to time. He chalked that up to his imagination, but little did Lionel know that it wasn’t just his imagination. The doll was becoming more and more part of him and his life, and it sensed something too, that this young porcelain skinned beauty that only existed in the sleep realm could not compete with-the physical realm that Lionel dealt with during the day and the majority of his time. That night as Lionel slept there came the presence of his dream lover caressing him, kissing every inch of his body, until he was aroused. Once again the two spirits were entwined as one making love with more intensity than ever before, but with a twist! Lionel blurted the name “Ann”. This shocked the dreamy enchantress! Suddenly she realized that there was another woman only in the worst possible way, in the physical reality, the real world, that Lionel occupied each and every day! This could not be! This would have to stop somehow and some way! She could not be allowed, whoever this Ann was, to take her place!Friday night was the big night that Ann was going to come over. Lionel had taken it upon himself to buy Riesling White German wine to go along with the baked smothered chicken recipe he had done some recipe research on. Now it was already, the chicken dish was perfectly done, the yeast rolls were ready to be popped into the oven, and the white wine was chilled. Ann was special. He knew this. She wasn’t some frivolous tart who took nothing in life seriously and lived by the seat of her pants like most younger women, as he saw them. She had class. He could feel his heart pounding when he heard the knock at his door.It was over a glass of wine that Lionel finally made his move, gently pulling her close and caressing her cheeks as his lips met hers. It seemed like a fire had lit up in Ann as she responded with a passionate physicality that surprised Lionel. She became a real tigress and before he knew it Ann had pulled him to his bedroom and began tugging at his shirt so she could get her hands on his chest! This was unbelievable! This surpassed Lionel’s greatest expectations. They hadn’t even eaten dinner yet! She clung to him with sincere desire and they were soon making love on a bed of clean linens he had made sure to wash! Ann was enthralled with this man of the world who had led such an interesting life and shown her so much interest like a true gentleman. She felt as though she had been waiting for man like this her whole life, especially since she had not been with another man since her husband had died! The love making had left both of them spent and they both drifted off to a pleasant sleep. The box that the bazaar owner had wrapped the doll in made a rattling noise that woke up Lionel. It was under the bed. At first, he didn’t know what was going on until he finally figured it out! It was the doll in the box making that sound! He panicked! Ann was still sleeping soundly so he reached under the bed and grabbed the box and lifting himself off the mattress, he took the doll and its cardboard prison and put it outside on his patio leaning it against the privacy fence. When he turned around to go back inside, there was Ann rubbing her eyes and frowning suspiciously. “Whatever are you doing out here?” She asked.“Thought I heard something and I was checking,” Major Eldridge lied. There was a telltale rattling that came from the box, but Ann didn’t have X-ray vision. All she heard was the noise. “I think I’ve got a beastly rodent out here. I apologize! Let’s get in! I don’t want the bastard getting into my place!” Ann seemed convinced. They both were hungry now and Lionel served the chicken dish after heating up the dinner rolls while serving up the two of them another glass of wine. Ann curled up next to him as he sipped from his wine glass. “You’re the most thoughtful man I’ve ever known, and most romantic too,” Ann admitted as she kissed his neck and made him feel aroused all over again. By now, it was after midnight, and they were both enjoying a very late meal that their fiery passion had brought their appetites to the surface over. Lionel felt truly happy for the first time in years as he gazed into the eyes of this wonderful lady. Was marriage a possibility here, he wondered. Maybe it was too premature to be fantasizing about, but he was indeed satisfied.Suddenly a flickering light shown through the glass sliding door that led to the patio! The box was on fire! Lionel went outside to quell the flames, worried that his fence might ignite. As he tried to stamp out the fire, Ann, with quick thinking brought out a pitcher of water and doused the flaming box! “My God! How did that happen?” Ann shouted in disbelief.“No earthly idea!” Lionel sighed, worried that there was something paranormal here that could spook Ann away from their situation.“Oh, look!” Ann said as she bent over and cleared the cardboard ash away. “It’s an unusual doll, and it’s not even damaged, no char, no singe, it’s in perfect condition. What was it doing out here, Lionel?”“Oh, I’ve been doing a lot of re-arranging lately,” He lied. “That’s an old doll that my daughter had when she was younger.”“Curious. It’s very unique,” Ann said as she gazed at the face. “What could ever have started the fire,” She wondered aloud.Lionel just shook his head unable to think of any kind of a logical explanation, but he knew! The doll was evil! He cringed at the thought of what might have happened had the two of them gone back to bed before that box had caught on fire! Lionel knew he had to get rid of it, but how? They went back to bed but Ann kept the doll with her. She had no idea what she was holding.“You come with me young lady,” she laughingly spoke to the doll. “We’re going to keep an eye on you.”She placed the doll on the end table and snuggled up to Lionel who held her in his arms. Slowly, they drifted off again. The darkness closed in around them and an hour or two rolled by when suddenly Ann sat straight up in the bed gasping for breath with beads of sweat on her cheeks and forehead!Lionel grabbed her,” Are you alright?”“No!” Ann gasped. “I had this horrible nightmare, and, and, that doll of yours was in the dream!” She replied catching her breath. “Perhaps it was the fire that broke out and recovering it from the burned up box. I don’t know, but I can’t sleep anymore!”“Can I get you something, dear?” Lionel asked as he rubbed her arm.“No, no, “Ann replied. “I think I’ll go home get ready to go into the shop. I have work to do.”Ann jumped out of bed, glared at the doll for a moment, dragged a brush across her hair, and began getting dressed as Lionel looked on speechless and worrying that Ann would be spooked off. He grabbed the doll, clenching his teeth and stuffed it under the bed. Something has to be done fast, he thought, or this damn doll would ruin his life! “Let me buy you some breakfast, dear,” Lionel offered.“No-no!” Ann shot back. “I need to take care of some business. Just call me later.” Ann rushed off and left Lionel wondering if this incident had screwed things up between the two of them! After showering, Lionel, got dressed, and grabbed the doll as he walked out the door to climb into his little Austin Healey sports car and steering into the early morning traffic! He knew what to do! He took A302 to the Westminster Bridge then turned off on A100 Road leading to a circular drive that ended at an observation point where he got out of his car with the doll in hand! “I’m giving you away to the River Thames!” Lionel said as he tossed the doll with all his might into the waters! Lionel drove to a pub and ordered a brandy as he mulled over the situation and then decided to go back to his place! He heard his phone ringing and rushed to pick it up. It was Ann. He was relieved to hear her voice, but was not happy to hear what she was calling about!“Lionel, I just opened the door to my shop, and guess what I found? Your godforsaken doll was right there at my steps! Is this some kind of a joke? And it’s soaking wet too. Are you playing tricks on me, Lionel?”“No! No!” Lionel shouted in disbelief, “Why would you accuse me of that?”“Well, if it’s not your doll it must be an exact double!”“This is impossible!” Lionel cried. “I just threw the damned doll into the River Thames not more than an hour ago!”“Well no wonder it’s wet!” Ann shot back! “How do you suppose it got here? Walked?”“Ann, I need to seriously talk with you. Please hear me out! I’ll be right over!” Lionel responded and slammed the phone back down on the hookLionel made a mad dash for his car and put the Austin Healey through its paces as he drove to see her! He pulled into a line of parking spaces across the street from Ann’s little shop, hopped out of the driver’s seat, and began to hurriedly cross the street, when all of the sudden a car nearly stuck him as he leaped out of the way! The driver stopped. “You trying to get yourself killed Mate? Are you alright?” He said without getting out of his Ford Cortina MK-2 four door.“I’m alright. Sorry,” Lionel apologized as he brushed off his clothes and walked toward Ann’s shop! He burst through the door breathlessly! “ We need to talk!”“What happened to you?” Ann shouted as her eyes fell upon a disheveled man.“I was almost struck by a vehicle just now!”“I wondered what that screech of tires was all about,” Ann replied as she frowned at him not bothering to ask if he was okay or not.The scorn of a woman, thought Lionel as he stared at Ann. “That doll is evil, and I lied to you and I’m sorry for that. It was never my daughter’s but I didn’t know how to explain it to you.”“Why did you lie to me about it then?”“I didn’t want to waste our time together talking about that damned doll!” Lionel glanced at it noticing its eyes seemed to follow him, and that spooked him. “I bought it at some foreign bazaar owned by some little Indian fellow. He saw I was looking at it and told me in his culture’s tradition that it can bring love and good luck, and at the time, lonely and unhappy, I bought it just for the hell of it, Ann. I had no idea what powers this thing has.”“So it’s super natural then,” Ann nodded. “Just great! Look what you’ve brought into my life! Just get rid of it then!”“It’s not that easy. He told me that in order for me to get rid of it I must give it to someone who really wants it or it will never leave me!” Lionel explained.“Oh, just great, Lionel,” Ann replied frowning. “I knew you were a man of the world, but you brought this curse with you?”“Ann, I need your help. I don’t have any friends or acquaintances I would want to give this to. It has to be someone who deserves this for the injustice they’ve done to others, and I just don’t know anyone like that.”Ann pointed to a table, “Sit down. I have to tell you something.”“First, whatever you have to say let me put the thing outside so it doesn’t overhear us,” Lionel replied.“Do you know how crazy all this sounds?” Ann asked dumbfounded.“Yes, but I know what it’s about. It has haunted me in my dreams for several nights!“Yes,” Ann agreed. “In my dreams last night the doll came to me as a grown young woman but I knew it was the doll, and it tried choking me to death! Now since I’ve had time to remember.”“Was it a porcelain skinned and slender young woman with fair hair?” Lionel asked with raise eyebrows.Ann nodded.“You see! I know!”“Then what do we do?” Ann asked.“Is there someone you know who has harmed you, threatened you, someone who is exceptionally cruel?” Lionel asked as he grasped Ann’s wrist.Ann grabbed Lionel’s hands. “I’ve never told you about how my husband died, the scandal it caused, and how I was ostracized from his family. All they cared about was not losing any of their wealth!” Tears flooded her eyes.“Yes my dear. Tell me! “Lionel prodded her.“My husband was Nigel Allen Burk, part of a wealthy family of trading brokers who profit off all of the British export and imports from the Royal Crown colonies. When my husband died he was caught having an affair with a married man’s wife her husband murdered him! It was a big scandal that caused a great deal of controversy! Somehow I was blamed by his family that I wasn’t woman enough to keep my man.”“That certainly wasn’t true!” Lionel laughed.“I would have rightfully owned half of my husband’s wealth had the courts ruled justly, and I didn’t even want all of it! I just wanted enough to start my life over again, but his greedy family apparently paid off the courts to minimize whatever settlement I was due. To add insult to injury over what my own disgrace, came what little money that I was forced to accept and begin anew, and I did it!” Ann broke down and cried unashamedly as Lionel grabbed her and held her in his arms.“I’m so sorry!” He replied feeling his eyes well up.“I know who we can give this godforsaken doll to but I don’t know how,” Ann said. “My former sister in law. She deserves it as much as the devil! She is greedy, jealous, and more vain than anyone I’ve ever known. She always resented me because she felt I was a threat to her sense of self-worth, always trying to undermine me, but I don’t know how to present it to her.”Lionel already had an idea, “Leave it to me. Just give me their address and I will take care to deliver the gift of vengeance. You just wait and see,” he assured her.“I’ll leave it to you then,” Ann dried her face with the handkerchief Lionel had offered her.Chapter IILionel stood at the gates of a plush manor and an impressive archway. There was a hand set looking like a telephone that he picked up. “This is the Burk residence. May I help you?”“Yes, my name is Eldridge, you should have a reservation for my time to meet Mrs. Nataly Burk?”“What is your business and purpose here?”“I thought I already explained that yesterday.”“I’m sorry, but I have no notes on that. Please state what your business is.”“I’m a salesman for a local merchant who is giving away a free promotion, a free gift, to acquaint local potential customers with their products. It’s completely free.” Lionel claimed as a boastful sales person would do.There was the sound of a buzzer. “Please come in and I will inform Mrs. Burk.”Lionel came to the large carved wooden door of the estate and it swung open revealing a spacious interior of luxurious artifacts, rugs, and marble flooring. It was almost breath taking. A woman came to the door dressed in a drab gray tight fitting blouse that did nothing to accentuate her flat chest, with a matching gray skirt, that flowed above a narrow pair of black leather winklepickers, that were sharp toed. She almost looked like the wicked witch of the North, Lionel noted.“How are you today, Madame? I’m so glad to be able to present you with my free offering.”She viewed him with a doubtful expression and replied, “Nothing’s for free. What is the catch?”“Oh no catch, Madame, besides, I am Mr. Eldridge and I am here to offer you a free promotional item, no cost, no obligation, the bazaar that I represent would merely like to acquaint you with its merchandise so that if you are curious and would like to browse, you will have gotten a taste of the kind of products my employer carries.” Lionel handed her a decorative box tied together with a bow and ribbon.Nataly Burk took the box with unappreciative gesture and tore open the packaging that she handed to a housekeeper standing alongside of her wearing a white cap and apron, appearing rather feeble. When she was done unwrapping the unique doll her eyes opened wide as did Nataly’s. The dismal expression on the greedy woman’s face suddenly lit up with interest. “I have an extensive doll collection that I began when I was a little girl, and this stunning figurine would go nicely with the rest of my collection.”“It is all yours,” Lionel smiled. “But, first I’ll need you to sign off on your free item just to show that you own it free and clear with no further obligation. You know how with all the fraud that goes on nowadays, that it’s good to have proof of ownership.”Nataly took her greedy eyes off the doll for a second giving Lionel a thoughtful expression, “you have a very good point there. Do you have something I can write with?”Lionel felt around his pockets and acted flustered, “I’m so sorry Mam, and I must have misplaced it.”“And you call yourself a salesman,” Mrs. Burk replied contemptuously. “Emily, would you go and get that fountain pen of mine off my desk, and throw that packaging away too,” She ordered. “And this business you represent is?”“It’s that “Curios and Antiques” Bazaar on Carnaby Street in Soho near King’s Road in Chelsea.”“Yes, I know the area,” Mrs. Burk replied dismissively as she signed for her package.“I hope you enjoy that gift and please come see us! “ Lionel replied as the housekeeper began closing the heavy door and Nataly disappeared inside without as much as glancing back at Lionel with any kind of grateful expression! God, was Ann right, this woman is a true money grubbing wench! Lionel thought as he turned to leave. It was later that evening after drinking her fill of brandy and eating a helping of the Shepherd’s pie that her chef had made that Mrs. Nataly Burk had headed for her lavish master bedroom at the top of the winding stairs. The children, her 18 year old son, and 16 year old daughter were playing the “Cluedo” mystery murder board game as their mother retired for the night. Her husband was out of town on a business trip making more foreign trade deals for the family brokerage. She fell asleep quickly having put the doll aside next to her bed on her Fresco teak wood afromosia accented end table! Just another uneventful night but for a new addition to her doll collection. So accustomed to getting whatever she wanted, the woman had little appreciation at all. When was that obsessive work horse husband of hers going to get back in town? She thought, as dream land enveloped her senses!Deep in the black void of the night as all her windows were heavily draped with flowing patterned silk fabric and lining, not one bit of starlight dared enter the darkness of the room at night. Then it happened. Nataly sat upright in bed, trying to catch her breath! A nightmare had visited her in the form of some female demon! She was chased around, hiding from her assassin and breathing hard as she awaited potential death! Now she was fully awake, gasping in her Revival Brass and iron framed “Slumberland” spring mattress bedding could not comfort her enough to overlook the horrors that had been visited upon her as she dreamt. She got up dripping with sweat from her face and leaned against her chest of drawers with beveled mirrors and glanced deeply into the glass. There, she saw a pathetic, pampered, and spoiled woman in her early 40’s as scared as any little child could have been when she saw it! There were two glowing points of light in the inky blackness of the background. She turned to see the unique doll given to her that morning, glaring like some kind of monstrosity as it penetrated right though her eyes! She whimpered as she turned, trembling with terror, and felt short of breath! Nataly then collapsed falling forward upon the plush Oriental rug she took for granted like everything else in her life. Her breathing went shallow as her heart faltered. The fright she’d experienced had done her in.In the morning her housekeeper found her. She summoned the children, too caught off guard to think of shielding them from death! Her son pulled her over on her back as she had been slumped over. The expression of horror upon her face left her son astonished as he stared in shocked amazement at her. “Mommy?” Elizabeth, her daughter mumbled in confusion as the housekeeper frantically called for a doctor on the house phone! Neither child shed a tear. They simply sat silent even as the ambulance arrived. It was later that day that Mr. Alias Nathaniel Burk arrived from his so-called business trip which had, in reality, been merely a soiree with his Mistress Francine, whom he intended to marry, but up until now, he hadn’t arrived at a comfortable solution, but with this unexpected turn of events-how convenient! And, it wouldn’t even amount to a costly divorce settlement! What more could a man like him ask for? He learned of which hospital her body had been carried off to and it would require the appearance of respect and decency for him to take a ride in his Bentley downtown to pay his respects which would be required of course of action.Meanwhile, the Mortuary at the London Hospital on Whitechapel Road on the East End would fast be autopsying the corpse of Mrs. Nataly Burk. The coroner had been puzzled. The blood work was normal with a presence of alcohol but not in great quantities. No, tranquilizers or other drugs were present. All organs appeared normal, even the heart that had apparently failed had not been diseased! That was strange! When filling out the Post Mortem Report, the examiner listed Cause of Death Unknown. However, the attending physician could not help but note the expression of horror on the face of the deceased and found that to be very unsettling.Alias Nathanial Burk, thought he had a new lease on life and, being the practical and unsentimental man that he was, he gave the mysterious doll he found in his wife’s bedroom to his fiancé as a gift, thinking she might be impressed with such an exotic present. However, as the weeks went on Alias, who had informed his new squeeze that it would take some time to transition her into the estate for the sake of public opinion and to prevent any undue rumors of scandal! However, it seemed that fate took a very bad turn for the Burk family as Francine exhibited a strange transformation in mood, complaining about strange dreams about a doll. In three weeks the mistress even in the lap of luxury that Alias Burk was keeping her in, committed suicide by drug overdose! From this point on in, the Burk Family experienced a series of personal tragedies, untimely accidents, and unlikely deaths. For some reason that no one but perhaps Ann and Lionel Aldridge could have known, the mystery of one of the wealthiest families in Great Britain suffering such sudden downfalls would remain the stuff of speculation, rumors, and occult documentaries that never arrived at the truth behind these unprecedented calamities other can some kind of curse! As for Lionel and Ann, at first there had been an awkwardness after the doll incident that had raised red flags for the woman that he loved. Ann had to step back for a while until she was assured that everything between she and Lionel was now solid and free of any other surprises. An unexpected windfall of money came from the Burk estate owed to Ann once investigators had uncovered irregularities that should have been legally settled but were apparently violations. The two lovers would end up being married and a future arose from the ashes of unexpected misfortune.See More]]> Fri, 09 Oct 2026 21:09:33 +0000 1191170329 cheeki kea commented on cheeki kea's photo cheeki kea commented on cheeki kea's photoNow Showing]]> Wed, 07 Oct 2026 06:34:04 +0000

Curious how the very ones you love simply slipped away in the course of life, he sadly recalled. The darkness closed in around them and the an hour or two rolled by when suddenly Ann sat straight up in the bed gasping for breath with beads of sweat on her cheeks and forehead!Lionel grabbed her,” Are you alright?”“No!” Ann gasped. “Are you alright?”“What happened to you?” Ann shouted as her eyes fell upon a disheveled man.“I was almost struck by a vehicle just now!”“I wondered what that screech of tires was all about,” Ann replied as she frowned at him not bothering to ask if he was okay or not.The scorn of a woman, thought Lionel as he stared at Ann. Look what you’ve brought into my life!”“It’s not that easy. Tell me! “Lionel prodded her.“My husband was Alias Nathaniel Burk, part of a wealthy family of trading brokers who profit off all of the British export and imports from the Royal Crown colonies. When my husband died he was caught having an affair with a married man’s wife who murdered him! It was a big scandal that caused a great deal of controversy! Somehow I was blamed by his family that I wasn’t woman enough to keep my man>”“That certainly wasn’t true!” Lionel laughed.“I would have rightfully owned half of my husband’s wealth had the courts ruled unjustly, and I didn’t even want all of it! Eldridge and I am here to offer you a free promotional item, no cost, no obligation, the bazaar that I represent would merely like to acquaint you with its merchandise so that if you are curious and would like to browse, you will have gotten a taste of the kind of products my employer carries.” Lionel handed her a decorative box tied together with a bow and ribbon.Nataly Burk took the box with unappreciative gesture and tore open the packaging that she handed at a housekeeper standing alongside of her wearing a white cap and apron, appearing rather feeble. When she was the unique doll her eyes opened wide as did Nataly’s. “Emily, would you go and get that fountain pen off mine off my desk, and throw that packaging away too,” She ordered. Lionel thought as he turned to leave.I was later that evening after drinking her fill of brandy and eating a helping of the Shepherd’s pie that her chef had made that Mrs. Nataly Burk had headed for her lavish master bedroom at the top of the winding stairs. The children, her 18 year old son, and 16 year old daughter were playing the “Cluedo” mystery murder board game as their mother retired for the night. Her husband was out of town on a business trip making more deals foreign trade deals for the family brokerage. So fell asleep quickly having put the doll aside of her bed on her Fresco teak wood afromosia accented end table! There were two glowing point of light in the inky blackness of the background. She turned to see the unique doll given to her that morning, glaring like some kind of monstrosity as it penetrated right though her eyes! She whimpered as she turned, trembling with terror, and felt short of breath! She then collapsed falling forward upon the plush Oriental rug she took for granted like everything else in her life. Her breathing went shallow as her heart faltered. The fright she’d experienced had done her in.In the morning her housekeeper found her. She summoned the children, too caught off guard to think of shielding them from death! He son pulled her over on her back as she had been slumped over. The expression of horror upon her face left her son dazed as he stared in shocked amazement at her. “Mommy?” Elizabeth, her daughter mumbled in confusion as the housekeeper frantically called for a doctor! He learned of which hospital her body had been carried off to and it would require the appearance of respect and decency for him to take a ride in his Bentley downtown to pay his respects would be required of course.Meanwhile, the Mortuary at the London Hospital on Whitechapel Road on the East End would fast be autopsying the corpse of Mrs. However, the attending physician could not help but note the expression of horror on the face of the deceased and found that to be very unsettling.Alias Nathanial Burk, thought he had a new lease on life and, being the practical and unsentimental man that he was, he gave the mysterious doll he found in his wife’s bedroom to his fiancé as a gift, thinking she might be impressed with such an exotic gift. In three weeks the mistress even in the lap of luxury that Alias Burk was keeping her in committed suicide by drug overdose! The two lovers would end up being married and a future arose from the ashes of unexpected misfortune.See More]]> Fri, 09 Oct 2026 21:09:33 +0000 1191170329 cheeki kea commented on cheeki kea's photo cheeki kea commented on cheeki kea's photoNow Showing]]> Wed, 07 Oct 2026 06:34:04 +0000 1191154046 cheeki kea posted a photo cheeki kea posted a photo

Curious how the very ones you love simply slipped away in the course of life, he sadly recalled. The darkness closed in around them and the an hour or two rolled by when suddenly Ann sat straight up in the bed gasping for breath with beads of sweat on her cheeks and forehead!Lionel grabbed her,” Are you alright?”“No!” Ann gasped. Look what you’ve brought into my life!”“It’s not that easy. “Emily, would you go and get that fountain pen off mine off my desk, and throw that packaging away too,” She ordered. He learned of which hospital her body had been carried off to and it would require the appearance of respect and decency for him to take a ride in his Bentley downtown to pay his respects would be required of course.Meanwhile, the Mortuary at the London Hospital on Whitechapel Road on the East End would fast be autopsying the corpse of Mrs. In three weeks the mistress even in the lap of luxury that Alias Burk was keeping her in committed suicide by drug overdose!
