I'm SO happy that Melody invited me over to her amazing space while she's grabbing a little R and R! She's set the bar pretty high so hopefully you won't be too underwhelmed by my little ol' bureau redo. Let's all take a moment, though, to throw a little side eye to Miss Melody who's probably reading this on her phone with a fruity drink and waves lapping at her toes.... Grrr, the jealousy. <img alt="Chalk Paint Dresser Redo" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-13203" src="; height="845" width="560" /><br /> I'm Charlotte and when I'm not being snarky about my friends on vacation, I blog over at <a href="; target="_blank">Ciburbanity</a>. Before you go looking up Ciburbanity in your dictionary, it stands for CIty + suBURB + sANITY. Almost 2 years ago, I moved from the glorious urban chaos of of New York City to our current grassy digs in Connecticut. A big adjustment to say the least. My blog was born as a way for me to share the thrifty projects I started to tackle to update our 100 year old home, document the activities I did with our kids to keep everyone sane, and the occasional ramblings of a rookie stay-at-home mom. Oh, and Craigslist is my jam. I love that place.<br /> <img alt="CIBURBANITY LOGO 2" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-13202" src="; height="755" width="560" /><br /> Coming from NYC, we had a number of random furniture pieces that were on a more miniature scale to fit all 400 square feet of our life. My dresser was one of these pieces. This was what I was dealing with. I mean it fit 4 pairs of socks, 5 t-shirts, and a few thongs on a good day. Not acceptable for any good suburban mom… <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="small-black-dresser" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-13214" src="; title="small-black-dresser" /></div><br />And then this beauty came across my Craigslist screen. I loved the lines, the details, the bowed front and... the size! Bigger, but not too big. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="craigslist-dresser-before" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-13213" src="; height="422" title="craigslist-dresser-before" width="640" /></div><br />The veneer on the top was in baaaaad shape. Kinda like me these days; aye-oh. I spent a little time on the world wide web and learned how to remove the veneer by placing a damp towel directly on the wood and placing a hot iron on top for about a minute. Using a paint scraper, the veneer came off pretty easily. <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="removing-veneer" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-13211" src="; height="423" title="removing-veneer" width="640" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="steam-iron-veneer" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-13212" src="; height="423" title="steam-iron-veneer" width="640" /></div><br />Annie Sloan's Country Grey is the base coat. And then just to add a hint of 'how do you do' I gave her a pair of stripes with a sample pot of Annie Sloan's Provence.<br /> <img alt="Annie Sloan stripes" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-13210" src="; height="423" width="640" /><br /><br /> Let me start by saying that my credit card has taken a hit thanks to this dresser. One little furniture upgrade and I have DOUBLED my clothing storage space. Afterall, if you build it, they will come, right? <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="closeup-dresser-after" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-13209" src="; height="845" title="closeup-dresser-after" width="560" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="chalkpaint-dresser-after" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-13204" src="; height="370" title="chalkpaint-dresser-after" width="560" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="dresser-in-room-chalkpaint" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-13207" src="; height="845" title="dresser-in-room-chalkpaint" width="560" /></div><br />Thanks for taking the time to put up with me, aka Melody 2.0. I know she misses all of you dreadfully (nope... she's on a beach reading Us Magazine) and is so excited to be back blogging asap (again, nope... there are pina coladas and swim-up bars there, people! She's never coming back). <br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="dresser-top-chalkpaint" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-13205" src="; height="370" title="dresser-top-chalkpaint" width="560" /></div><br />I posted about this bureau last summer so feel free to check out the long winded version <a href="; target="_blank" title="Shuffle Off To A New Bureau">here</a>!<br /><br /> xo Charlotte2014/03/my-passion-for-decor-has-left-building.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980154990692918366.post-8384411465484904702Wed, 12 Mar 2014 20:56:00 +00002014-03-21T22:21:03.853-07:00Gluten Freemake-aheadVegetablesVegetarianVegetarian Baked Spaghetti Squash Casserole <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="spaghetti squash bake by Marina Delio, on Flickr"><img alt="spaghetti squash bake" height="900" src="; width="600"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Comforting baked pasta? That's actually a vegetable? That pretty much sums up this spaghetti squash bake recipe. Let's face it - kids love noodles, but a lot of us are trying to cut down on simple carbs like traditional spaghetti. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This recipe is quite customizable. Go ahead and toss in any veggies or herbs you would like to use up. This week I added some fresh thyme and rosemary, and some cherry tomatoes on top, since that's what I had. Some cooked sausage (I used vegan Field Roast Italian sausage) is delicious thrown in with the veggies too. In the summer I add more bell peppers and some summer squash. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src=";></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><a href=" READING THIS POST »</a>2014/03/vegetarian-baked-spaghetti-squash.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980154990692918366.post-3676091025416606743Thu, 06 Mar 2014 05:09:00 +00002014-03-21T22:21:03.876-07:00BreakfastGluten FreesnacksVeganOvernight Oats Recipe {Vegan} <div style="text-align: center;"><em>This easy vegan no-cook overnight oatmeal recipe is a delicious way to ensure a healthy breakfast.</em> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src=";></a></div><br>Overnight oats have been very popular lately, but I had yet to try them until this week. As healthy and simple as it sounded, the thought of cold oatmeal seemed, well... icky. But, I tried it, and I'm so glad I did. After the kids went to bed I added some oats, unsweetened almond milk, and a few drops of stevia to jar. I gave it a shake and tucked them into the fridge for the night. I expected to heat it up in the morning, but after trying it, I was instantly hooked and wolfed down the whole jar. If you've been hesitating to try overnight oats like I was, trust me, you must try them! No more excuses for skipping breakfast. Just grab from the fridge and go! I am not the best breakfast-eater, and have been known to eat the kids' lunch PB&J crusts while dashing out the door with a flailing preschooler under my arm screaming that she wants to change her outfit for the 10th time that morning. Thank goodness for quick breakfasts like this to keep me (semi) sane<br><a href=" READING THIS POST »</a>2014/03/overnight-oats-recipe-vegan.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980154990692918366.post-2485547173858308545Thu, 27 Feb 2014 06:00:00 +00002014-03-21T22:21:03.889-07:00BreakfastBrunchdinnereggslunch recipesVegetarianSpanakopita Quiche with Fillo Crust <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Filo, fillo, or phyllo, whichever way you spell it, it's a delicious lighter option for for quiche. This version with spinach is our family's favorite - and a great way to eat more greens. </i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src=";></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Our girls love quiche, and spinach quiche in particular. It's on our regular dinner rotation, but I get tired of the heavy butter crust. So this week I pulled out a box of fillo dough, added some herbs, and feta, and <span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; line-height: 16.1200008392334px; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Voilà</span></span><span style="background-color: white; color: #444444; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: x-small; line-height: 16.1200008392334px; text-align: left;">!</span>! Spanakopita Quiche. I'm not so sure my Greek ancestors would approve of this, but it was delicious! Did I ever mention that for the first 23 years of my life I had a ridiculously Greek last name with lots of "o"s and "u"s in it? Yep! Even the kids loved the crispy layers of this fillo crust. And not just because they're a little Greek too - most all of their little friends gobble up spanakopita triangles. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Normally fillo can make me a little nervous because it dries out and becomes brittle so easily, but this recipe is so quick that it's not even an issue. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I had all the ingredients at home before I had even planned on making this for dinner - hopefully you do too! This recipe is pretty foolproof, so feel free to make substitutions. If you don't have green onions, you can leave them out, and feel free to use your favorite cheese, or herbs. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src=";></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">My <i>only</i> issue with this recipe is that I wasted a lot of extra fillo dough. I think the solution is to make two quiches and give one to a friend. Or maybe this is a good excuse to make a sheet of baklava the next day? I just hate throwing out perfectly good ingredients. What do you think? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Keep reading for the rest! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><a href=" READING THIS POST »</a>2014/02/spanakopita-quiche-with-fillo-crust.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980154990692918366.post-8678894472663392271Wed, 26 Feb 2014 15:30:00 +00002014-03-21T22:17:46.450-07:00A Quick Update and a House Tour! <div style="text-align: center;">Hello!! Sorry I know it's been awhile since I posted. It's been a whirlwind lately with selling the house and getting everything ready for that to happen. Some days I feel like I'm honestly living in some sort of alternate universe....we're moving AGAIN?? Really?? Who decided that?!! At any rate, I'm trying to remember that 'everything happens for a reason.' We're in the process of finding a new home and traveling to Chicago this weekend for a house hunt. Wish us luck!! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">If you've ever sold a home, you understand how hard it can be and how much extra stress it adds to life. It's a bit more challenging with the hubby working in Chicago and Hunter and I here. Trying to keep the house in pristine condition 24/7 with an 8 year old, a dog and a cat is proving a challenge. Not to mention I'm creative, not tidy or organized! :-)</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">This time the move is a lot harder on both Hunter and I since we've only been in this home for 6 months. We've both made connections in the area and love living here. Hunter is a trooper, but it's times like this that make my heart break for him. He told me this weekend, "No matter what I choose I get hit....If I choose to stay here and have Daddy commute, I won't see him. If I choose to move then I won't have my friends." Please keep him in your thoughts. He's very resilient, but I know how difficult it is to move and start over and over again. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">OK, now on to something more exciting! I've been meaning to do a tour of the house for sometime, but instead I'm going to just give you the link to our home listing. If you know anyone who wants to move to CT or is in the area now and looking to buy....this house is amazing. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Here's the link <a href=" Passion For Decor Home Tour</a>. Hope you like it as much as I do. One room missing is the office...it is was still a work in process at the time of the pictures. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">As always, thank you so much for taking time to read this post. I love your comments and emails so please keep them coming. I post a lot more on Facebook so if you're not already following me there, click on the furniture icons at the top of this page. </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">Thank you!!!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div>2014/02/a-quick-update-and-house-tour.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980154990692918366.post-2200863898469838432Tue, 25 Feb 2014 05:30:00 +00002014-03-21T22:21:03.900-07:00drinksEpicuriousno sugar addedoutofthekitchenSugar Free Lemonade Recipe <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src=";></a></div><br><br>I was recently contacted about Bon Appetit's new online series called <a href="; target="_blank">Out of the Kitchen</a>, which showcases how face-to-face interactions are vital to the success of notable chefs, restaurateurs and food influencers in the culinary world. I was challenged to think about the importance of face-to-face communication in the home kitchen environment, and gladly took on that challenge. My girls have been cooking with me since they were teeny tiny. At first it was just mixing ingredients in bowls and lining muffin tins with liners. I've always known that cooking with kids was good for them, but over the past few weeks I really have been noticing just how good it is for our relationships. I've been bothered lately by how drawn to screens we are - one wants to watch rainbow loom videos on an iPad while the other wants my phone to do a "puzzle" app and I'm on the computer getting a few minutes of work done. No one is talking to each other - it's like we are zombies staring at these rectangular devices. So I've made a point of doing real puzzles on the floor, building with blocks, or cooking together when we have free time.<br><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src=";></a></div><br><br>Lately when we cook together the girls work together surprisingly well. Quite a change from the toddler screaming of the recent past. They're taking turns and sharing. My oldest is helping her little sister. We are working together and talking about what we are making, but also about other important things that are going on in our lives. And laughing hysterically together when mom accidentally gets sprayed with blood orange juice.<br><br>Continue reading for the rest of the story and recipe!<br><br><a href=" READING THIS POST »</a>2014/02/sugar-free-lemonade-recipe.htmlnoreply@blogger.com (Anonymous)0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7980154990692918366.post-512850006557301749Tue, 18 Feb 2014 19:02:00 +00002014-03-21T22:21:03.914-07:00Chia SeedsCookiesGluten FreeChia and Hemp Seed Cookies for A Friend <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i>Healthy superfood cookies made with chia and hemp seeds, and naturally refined sugar free and gluten free. </i></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="; imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="; /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div> These hearty cookies are not just for dessert, you can grab one for breakfast or an afternoon snack. Many of you even contributed when I ran a <a href="; rel="nofollow" target="_blank">half marathon</a> to raise money so that one day children with SMA can run too. Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is the #1 genetic killer of young children. And it is devastating. Babies are born healthy, but SMA quickly takes their ability to ever walk, verbalize, or eat. SMA does not affect the brain, however. Gwendolyn is just like any 6 year old. She goes to 1st grade and can read, loves horses and butterflies, and loves playing with her friends. She is currently in the hospital with a collapsed lung. You can follow her <a href="; rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a>. Adorably hart shaped for Valentine's day. </i></div><a href="; title="easy homemade ravioli by Marina Delio, on Flickr"><img alt="easy homemade ravioli" src="; height="900" width="600"></a><br><br><div style="text-align: center;"> Last year some of my girlfriends and I got together for a Valentine's Day themed supper club. I brought <a href="; rel="nofollow" target="_blank">beet and goat cheese puff pastry</a> app bites, but my favorite dish was heart shaped shrimp pot stickers made by my friend Jenn - she was kind enough to post the recipe <a href="; rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a>. Ever since that night I've been meaning to make her pot sticker recipe or try making heart shaped ravioli. Only simplified by using wonton wrappers. Well, I finally did it - only took me a year! <a href="; title="homemade ravioli by Marina Delio, on Flickr"><img alt="homemade ravioli" src="; height="883" width="600"></a> </div><div style="text-align: center;">I was able to get this all done early and then refrigerate the uncooked ravioli until dinnertime. I absolutely love making homemade pasta with the flour and the well for the egg and the kneading, and so on. But, there's just not always time for that on busy weeknights! These wonton wrappers worked amazingly well and tasted just like homemade pasta. </div><br><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src=" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;
