Episode 21 - Mountain West Supplements Episode 21 - Mountain West Supplements Wed, 10 Jan 2018 11:30:00 +0000 In this episode I actually flipped the script and had one of my good friends interview me for the podcast.

When I was 22 years old I began running my very own supplement company named Mountain West Supplements.

This was my very first business and I had no idea what I was doing, but I was passionate about fitness, and loved making money.

As you listen to this episode you will hear the lessons I quickly learned, the money I lost (ouch), and the way I am applying those lessons in my life today.

I wanted to do this episode to show my audience that people are not always successful on their first try (or second).  But we can take each of these experiences and grow from them.

Episode 11 - Brandan Fisher Interview Episode 11 - Brandan Fisher Interview Mon, 13 Nov 2017 02:10:40 +0000 In this interview Brandan I discussed hard work, being frugal, networking, all while discussing Brandan's origin story.

We also discussed his software that he is releasing named "Live Pigeon" which allows the user to push produced videos as "Live" videos on Facebook.

Myles:00:00

What's going on and welcome out to another episode of the 60 days living podcast on this episode I have guest Brandon Fisher joining me. He is the owner of fish dog productions which is a video production company. So let's go. All right thank you for joining me for this episode of the 60 days of living pod cast you know Brandon and I sat there and we probably were shooting the breeze for two two and a half hours during this interview and we talked about so many great topics from frugality to hardwork to providing value to networking. And we're going to actually jump right into what brand is telling us his origin story.

Brandan:00:41

So for your audience that doesn't know I do video production and I've been doing it now for man almost I think just out over 14 years and that's it's interesting. Like where I got my start doing video because you know I was newly married at the time I was going to Boise State and I was getting a communication degree.

Brandan:01:10

What I really liked about it though is I could take video classes.

Brandan: 01:13

And we had a really good video program in high school started on VHS surprisingly to those that might not know what that is. So I you know shot on that in high school. Fast forward you know here I'm going to school and you know the video camera that they handed me was this Sony Handycam.

Brandan:01:30

And I was like dang man like I want to be professional like anyway so at that moment I was like you know what I wonder if I should just buy my own camera.

Brandan: 01:41

And like I said newly married at the time I remember like all of me and my wife's assets together maybe was over$2000 with cars and everything like not very much more names right. Young dumb and maybe that is what I say but it was interesting to me is like I went to her and I was like Hey. So they gave me this camera and it's just not good enough. Which is kind of funny now that I think about it some like hey that's it's crazy to me that what I proposed to her at the time was hey I think I should go buy this camera in her class correct for my class. OK. And that's a hard sell. Yeah. And there was$4000. That's an extremely hard sell. So I was like dang I want to take this serious and this is what I want to do.

Brandan:02:33

So at that time I was actually working for a video production company doing live events. They had this particular camera as well and I saw that they were renting it out and I was like man there's an opportunity here. So that's kind of how I pitched it to her that not only can I rent this out but I can use it for my classes. And then I can also do like other projects with it. And so anyway she said yes. Which thank goodness. And I was just told my wife the other day that I feel like that is her gift is the ability to be supportive and. And the reason I share this story with you as well is because it ties into everything with having a supportive spouse someone that believes in you. I told her that if she worked while I went to school that I would make it so that she didn't have to work because her biggest goal in life is to be a stay at home mom and I wanted to be able to support that.

Brandan:03:34

So we got married I bought this camera. And it's interesting I was telling miles just just today that I have a word in which is my why and it's provide. And when I got married that was like a huge deal like I was like my goodness I have to provide for my wife I have to make sure that like not only that I have a roof covering her head but that like I need to make sure that I can provide for her. And as our family expand expanded like we you know we had a we had our first child I graduated college and then actually those anyway.

Brandan:04:22

The details are OK but where I'm going with it is I graduated first and then we had. Then we had our child. But what was fascinating to me is I graduated with a communication degree. Love taking all these video classes and and again that's just kind of where I got like my star as far as like I wasn't doing anything that was like professional at that level yet but just getting. Of course at the time I thought everything into professional and awesome and just like we sometimes always do right we always do that sometimes our stuff is I think this podcast is great and it is right and it's. But as you started doing stuff more and more that's how you develop your voice that's how you develop what it is that you're doing.

Myles:                                       05:03                       And so so I mean when you graduate we first came out of college was your first job. Like in the film or video production industry or did you like take a job doing some job that you weren't passionate about.

Brandan:                                 05:17                       So OK so I worked all the way through college at at different like a live audio visual company. And so I did that for about seven years. My job didn't take seven years to graduate. But meaning like I worked all the way through and this might go with your 60 days to living show we cash flow to college. Yeah. I was able to make enough. I worked all the way through. Plus did schooling my wife she worked as well. And I mean man.

Brandan:05:50

Just hearing how many people out there have huge huge student loans to Arties to already have that star of not having student loans is like amazing.

Myles:06:00

And actually what's funny is just two episodes ago there was one on hardwork and you kind of already there were a few topics in it but it was hard work. And then also being able to convince your wife like putting in the effort into your relationships or your wife then in turn supports you like you talked about like you had a hard sell or selling your wife had to get this$4000 camera. And I think maybe that's where we had to put in that super hard work so then it's reciprocate like OK I'm going to support you in this because you supported me here. And then we also in that episode discussed working all the way through college like the hard work it does put you at such a greater advantage. Now I would say advantage but in a better place because you have different opportunities you can wait wait it out for that job that you wanted have had and take your job right away to pay back the student or you can kind of take your time and find the exact path that you want to take when you're starting off on that right foot without having the student loans.

Brandan:06:53

So yes. From there. What ended up happening is I got an opportunity to pitch a company so let me back up some working at this production company. Now the benefit of working so this is why it's awesome to work for other people and think about the things in which the education you can actually be getting at your current job and that you're at. I mean you work in Cleveland I guarantee you're getting a ton of value 100 percent. And anyway it just being around people and things like that. And so what the benefit that I got by working at a production company was I found out how they were charging their clients. And I think at the time they were charging like seventy five dollars an hour and I'm like dang I'm getting paid like 11. So I'm like What the heck.

Brandan:07:43

You know after again I was at this company for like five years and it's like you start seeing these numbers and say Man I wish I was making like 75 bucks an hour. Awesome right. So I had the opportunity where I was working with a dental. I had a dental client and they were based out of Seattle. And they said hey we want you to come and film a three day seminar. And I'm like cool. I already have my gear so I know how to charge because this company I'm with. And so I'm like I pitched this this company to do this video project for three days for eight thousand bucks cause I did the numbers and I'm like look this is what my this is what the production company I was working for were charged and I pitched it to them.

Brandan:08:34

What they say. Yes. I was like I felt so rich I was like oh my gosh. But at the same time I only had that one that one piece of equipment which was just my camera. So then what I did is I jumped online and I bought eight thousand dollars worth of equipment. OK. And so then all this equipment showed up and I'm like yes. Then I went to Seattle and I did the show and it was totally awesome because. Which is funny actually. I look back on the footage and it was bad. You know over here I'm like I'm pro. This is what I do and it is funny because at the end of the day I think the clients happy and so on. So it's it's all good it's not like I it wasn't a sham or anything.

Brandan:09:18

I didn't sell them snake oil. It was a they got what they wanted and they were happy. And then what's crazy is like I kept doing projects for them and it was a thousand dollars here. Another eight thousand dollars here you know and it just. Anyway it was. It was an awesome client to have in all of this stemmed from a$4000 camera but really a supportive wife.

Myles:09:43

So Brandon and I continued to talk about the job that he had the opportunities that came along with it. But eventually we got to the point in the story where he ended up getting laid off from this position. And he talked through kind of the hardships that came along with it but then also what he was able to learn and the opportunities that he had after that experience.

Brandan:10:02

I Still Remember to this day, December 18th came around and I got a phone call from my boss and it totally totally sucked because I knew that as soon as I was on the phone with them something was up to hear that tone in his voice you could hear the tone and the worst part was I married I have a. I have a son and I'm the sole provider of my family.

Brandan:10:28

Right. And December 18th. Andthe reason obviously that date sticks out so prevalent is because that is right before Christmas.  And he's like hey man I'm sorry to tell you but like we're going to have to lay you off and I don't know.  I don't know if any of your listeners out there have gone through a layoff but that was the biggest thing in my life that I've ever experienced because to me the way in which I look at business is very similar to a relationship. And that like basically this guy's breaking up with me and that like there's nothing I can do I like he's already made up his mind. Yeah. I just had to sit there and accept it.  And I think the hardest part was having to walk up stairs and to tell my wife the news that I had just gotten laid off and I'll tell you what man like feeling like an absolute failure as the as the provider of my family right before Christmas like. And the other hard part was I was like I hate to do this but like we can keep presents for the kid the kids and like whatever but like whatever we can take back like let's we need to scale back.  And so. So because I had that two and a half year experience are well experienced but like since I worked for them for two and half years.  And I was getting if you you could probably. Well anyway I get like$5000 a quarter basically. So 20 extra thousand dollars a year for my rental equipment. So for two and a half years I was getting that. So as you can imagine I wasn't ever taking that money as cash. I was taking that money and I kept buying more and more and more equipment and I bought some stupid stupid crap that I didn't need. But I didn't now. Right. But that is how my business got like kicked off the ground. It's a little bit unique because I don't know how many people have actually built a business working for somebody else like it was a very unique situation. But yet I'm glad that I was smart enough to like invest in myself.

Myles:12:49

So like you say that invest in myself. But were you thinking that long term while you're still working for a company where you like at one point I'm going to break away. Were you just getting the equipment to get better at your craft and be better at your job now.

Brandan:13:02

Like in fact I actually really liked this company. I liked the I was I like the vision. I liked what they were doing and actually I I still to this day have a passion for dentistry like I love dentistry. I make dental videos still to this day. And my I don't know why but I loved dentistry. I don't know it. To be honest with you if if they were still paying me I would probably still be there and to this day. You know what I mean. Like I do the like but I'm kind of glad it happened just for where I am at today.

Myles:13:37

But when that happened I mean you kind of went through it having to go up like probably I can't even imagine that probably one of the worst experience I having to see like look like and you said it like that feeling of man I'm a failure. But you know I think there's always one of two options you can just kind of give up and just go on what you know what it is like welfare and get food stamps. Or was it like. All right. I'm doing this like what. What was that next step for you. Sure

Brandan:14:03

So here's the thing that I think is kind of interesting which is that like I think the first step people would probably do is just go on unemployment. Yeah. But I'll be honest I went down and I picked up that packet. They had this huge bold red letters on the front of this packet that said if you do not follow these instructions to the exacty basically you will go to jail. And I'm like I'm not doing this. Yeah. I didn't take any money from anybody. I didn't take money like some people would argue.  Well unemployment is technically yours because you've been paying into it for all these years and Beaubois like I didn't want to feel like I was a part of a system why we're in so here's the other thing I looked at how much they were going to pay wasn't very good and you had to do a ton of work. So basically I was looking at them like OK. I have to report if I make any money and then they will deduct that from what I saw anyway.  I basically did the math and I was like I can make more money on my own than taking this. And I'm glad that I had that realization and the thing is I'm glad that I've lived this like I would say frugal lifestyle and basically living below our means. But I'll say this I'm so thankful I read that book on true leadership because that had that gave me$5000 in the bank. We dropped my wife's smartphone down to a burner. We cut our lifestyle like you wouldn't believe. What year was this. This was the man so well. So I graduated 2009. This is what would have been probably 2012. OK. So about seven years ago. You know so I didn't tell you this. Maybe I did but I don't think so. So we bought a house.

Myles:16:00

You bought the house before or after.

Brandan:16:02

Like right before because we've been there for eight years. So I guess you know we lived there for maybe a year and then anyway. Yeah. So it's like so here. And the reason I'm sure in this part of the story is that like. The biggest sting and it's funny because like I can still feel this today which is that like I went through that experience of being laid off feeling rejected by somebody who I had high I looked up to you know it sad because I'm like dang man. Like when I do wrong this guy anyway. So I played that game in my mind for the longest time and the hardest part was I took all my equipment out trying to go out and just hustle. I jumped on Craigslist. I jumped on networking with anyone that I could possibly find and it's interesting because when you have a job you can see opportunities all over the place.  But when you're in scarcity it's so much harder to find opportunities. So I ended up couldn't really get a whole lot like like even in the video production industry slows down I think a lot of businesses slow down in the winter.  So here we're in you know December I jumped on Craigslist. I sound like a guy who was actually making a zombie film. And I told my wife I said I know this is crazy. But I need to go work on this movie with this guy.  And so I don't know why I went and worked on a zombie film. I don't even like zombie films. I do now. But at that time I was like yeah I get that time I was like what I didn't think I'd ever be doing horror as a genre. So anyway basically the reason I tell you this story is I worked on this film for like a month. It's called The End. It's called Amick. I was like what it's not my film but I did do a lot of work on it. And so like I did I shot the film and then I edited the film. So like oh wow. Yes. That's a big big job. It was. But when you're laid off and you don't have anything else to do and you got to work on something that you like. So this kept me busy during the wintertime the kind of the winter months.  So the reason I am so sure that that that piece is I really didn't get anything as far as work until about March. So about four four months of just one right in one job the end like there was there were a few like random jobs where I'd maybe get like 125 bucks which is lunch. Or like that's groceries for a week.  Right. So it's like. But it's also crazy because I mean if you're looking at like for video production work if I'm able to charge eight thousand bucks a certain clients and now I'm laid off. And now the only thing I'm finding is like I can maybe work on someone's stuff for like 125 bucks like I didn't. Anyway it was it was like devastating. I was like Holy crap how am I going to do this. And so worked on this film.  And then again met people networked with other people who are on this film. This little film crew and then I got a few other little gigs here and there and. I got a phone call one day from a guy and he's like hey we're looking to do a video issue. It's about an hour and a half. We'd love to have you come in and film it. Are you interested. Like yeah I'd love to. And he's like hey we want to shoot on these red cameras my red cameras for that. For those of you that don't know a red camera is probably the one of the most expensive cameras that you can buy.  You didn't have one didn't have one. They have one now. So you had to go get one. No actually. So I'll tell you why these cameras can go up to like$60000 for a camera just for the camera. That's an RV. Yeah it's. It's ridiculous. So the thing is though they wanted to shoot three cameras on reds right. I'm like we'll tell you what I'm really into these ideas. All our cameras and I would love for you to be able to see these because I don't I think you're going to get the quality you need without going for red. Anyway. So because these guys I ended up doing a three camera shoe and you. No none of them red. All these are correct. So I had a buddy who had one of the cameras. I own two of them.  Like I said it was like an hour and a half's worth of work. Mm hmm. And I got 1500 bucks and I was like I'm back. Yes. This is awesome right. And so what's interesting is I did another show I flew somewhere. I was on the airplane and I love flying. The reason I love flying is because it's forced meditation. So I'm sitting there with my thoughts and I'm like All right I have an idea. I really really liked working with these guys. And I met their editor which is crazy then editor there and I talked to him. So I told them to get an idea or an impression came to my mind I'm like I'm this and these guys and email. So as soon as we touched down I sent him an e-mail that said hey I really liked working with you guys.  And I know you already have an editor but I would love it if you could come over and just look at my editing suite and I got an e-mail instantly back that said cool we're just wrapping up lunch.  We'll be there in 30 minutes. And I'm like holy crap.  So what's funny is so I run upstairs to my wife and I'm like code red color red we got everything get this house cleaned cars anyway. And we didn't have time to get into it anyway. Yeah. So I run upstairs and I look in the bathroom and I'm like oh my gosh this place is a mess but I don't have time to freaking get it. So every time I go out of town I love going to hotels where they fold the toilet roll up. So if all I do is I fold the toilet paper in the bathroom correct change out change out the hand towel. And I'm out right and so and I'm we're just we're gathering Yeah stuff. Anyway we're just trying to make this place look somewhat present because I'm not used when clients come over here. Right. So anyway these guys show up and as soon as they walk in the door one of them says Hey can I use your bathroom.  Oh my gosh.  So I take it so I take the other guy downstairs and we're sitting there and they love my studio space. They're like oh my gosh this is just super cool. And anyway guys comes back. So both of them are down there. We just start chatting and apparently they are working out of a house a mile away.  And so they liked my setup. They left and it was interesting on their way back to their office. They gave me a call and I'm like they said OK. Question for you.  Who Folded the toilet paper roll in the bathroom. You or your wife. I said I did the craziest thing dude. Kid you not. Because I did that they said because of your attention to detail. We want you to come into our office tomorrow. Dead. No freakin way. Dead serious. What. You know. So I end up go into their office and basically they're like tell you what we really like what you do and we want to hire you out for two months.  I know it's a unique story because it's true. It's like. And so basically they invited me they've invited me back the next day I go in there and they say hey we want to hire you out for two months what would that cost. Oh my gosh. Luckily they didn't need an answer right. Yes. So the next day I got over a quote and I came up with the price and I was like all right for two months 20 grand. OK. Now mind you I'm like I'm stressing out a little bit because I'm like I not only do I want to impress these guys but like I don't want to leave money on the table and that's what it would cost for me or my equipment to do all their filming. Do you have all this stuff now mind you. This I believe this was around April April ish. Now had you been. And so my reserves after making my house payments stuff just having that five grand in the bank are like it's like running now. Right.

Myles:26:00

And so you're probably just scraping by by now even with burner phones and correct Rahmon correct. So

Brandan: 26:06

So I told him I said or they had me come over. Went back to their office. I'm sitting across the table from them and I gave them the quote and they looked it over and they said Do you have a video camera in here or something.  Because like that's them the max amount that we are willing to pay for this which is crazy. So in other words I got the$20000 contract. When you can pitch someone a bit of that size and they say yes it's like oh my gosh I feels so good.  That's I mean that's people out there that some of their yearly salaries or you know half of your salary. You bet like that. That's huge total. And so I can't even imagine what it's like. That's like me going into my boss's office for the next two months. You're going to triple my pay just so you know like that's crazy man. So what ended up happening is then after the two months they're like hey we would like to go a third. So I ended up in three months working for them getting$30000 a year. Crazy. And what I didn't tell you I guess in the story and sorry I'm not trying to be long winded with this but that I got a job offer or a job offer working for like one of the new stations here in town had weird hours and it was for$30000 a year and I turned it down because you made them three months. But this was before I even got all these guys. And so I was on the fence like do I take this do I not. So I'm sorry that was a little piece of it but. So that right there was like it was amazing in helping me get back on my feet again get confident because you have to realize to me when you get the carpet out from under you it takes time and it sucks. But as soon as you get that confidence back again then liked momentum correct. Oh my.

Myles:28:04

I think you just we touch on a few times because of the frugal lifestyle and not like living outside your means. You had the chance to turn down a job where other people would be forced into that not have the opportunity to make 30 grand in three months and then they continue to build upon that momentum because of your wise and Spartan living. You were like you avoided a trap. I think a lot of people fall into and not a lot I would say almost everybody falls into which it sucks and it's sad. But that's why I think one of the reasons for this podcast is to talk about living within your means being frugal and finding ways to make additional money so you can pay for those expenditures that are really necessary. But I just want to bring that up again because you lived in your means you had the can you say no to something that would have pigeonholed you probably.  You have that you get that three months 30 K and then I mean did it just continue to build. I mean obviously so I keep working at it but you kind of began the networking. Was it easier from that point or was it still hard or like were clients coming to you or are you still having to go out and find them. What happened after that.

Brandan:29:11

So what's interesting is again just networking like I said a guy on Facebook a message list doing what does networking, Yes networking because it really what it comes down to is the reason I'm at where I am at is because of the networks that I've been able to build my radio. I I don't necessarily call it the network but it's more of like I love building relationships with people. Right. And it's all about people and connecting with them and being able to like provide correct.  And so I and it's so cool to be able to like so I reach out on Facebook to this guy and I was like hey man this sucks I lost my job.  If you know anything let me know. Well his brother apparently owns a business and he's like hey why don't you come. Come in. Some like. OK. So just like from that I did a job for him for like two weeks but I didn't hear back from him. So once this job the$30000 one ended he called me back in the video I worked on with him for two weeks. He pitched to a company he landed a huge contract. And then he was able to bring me on. So then I ended up working for him for like five years. Tracy and I was making more money than I was with the dentist. So anyway so it's cool to see a progression even though it felt like when I got laid off that I was taking this step back. But like because of that traumatic event in my life and I went into hustle mode I was doing anything legal to make money.

Brandan:30:49

Yeah. You know as far as like again providing videos just just cranking out as many videos as I could for people doing them for. I look back now in insane deal. They were getting. And I ended up working for Russell actually on the site. Still have that side hustle going. And I'll say this was the coolest part for me was the respect I have for Russell is that he knew like like when he brought me on he knew that we'd be working nights and weekends. But what else is cool is that didn't disrupt what he had going on during the day as well. So I would say the takeaway for me is watching the way in which he works like I love that like the fact that he was or he's probably already making good money at the time but yet he's still working nights and weekends and doing whatever is required to be able to get his business like Wants to where it is today.

Myles:31:49

But he still puts in those exact same hours like you bet he's in at 9:00. He leaves at 3:00 not 3:00 p.m.. A.m.. He works insane amount of hours and has the hustle to write like I'm sure he is. You know you can hear his story and it's the same thing he had points in his life where there was no growth and comfort no comfort and growth they had no choice but to grow.

Brandan:32:09

So again for your listeners I would just say like again man just find find what you're passionate about. I knew I liked Camors. Luckily my wife let me know when there was a car worth of a camera right. I mean Anyway for those that are listening if you if there might be something obviously if you want a T

I have wanted to trek to see the mountain gorillas in Rwanda for years. It’s finally here. Will we find them? Will our interaction meet expectations? Will it have been worth the effort to find some of the last 800 of these animals on earth?

The process that leads to this moment is long. Fly to Kigali. Drive 3 hours on windy roads through the hills to Volcanoes National Park. Early the next morning, meet at Headquarters and be assigned to a guide and a family of gorillas. Twelve families of gorillas are habituated for tourism; groups of eight can spend one hour with their group per day. Drive another 45 minutes on bumpy roads. Start hiking somewhere between 1 and 4 hours straight up a volcano forest. Hope that at some point, the trackers have found your gorilla family based on where they were the afternoon before.

The support team makes us feel like we are climbing Everest. Our guide Augustine is the boss. We hire porters to support the local economy, as many of these men might otherwise be tempted to poach these valuable animals for zoos or private collections. Starting at 2400 Meters above sea level (7875 feet or 50% higher than Denver), we start hiking. We are walking at a pretty good clip up through the farmlands, approaching the wall of lava rocks that delineates the National Park. We stop along the way, which is good because my heart is pounding from altitude. We learn about gorillas – their habitat, diet, behaviors, etc. Excitement is building! Finally we receive word that the trackers know the exact location of the Isabukuru family and relay that info via walkie-talkie to Augustine. He plots a direct path there. Around 3000M (almost 10,000 feet above sea level), we meet up with a National Park ranger with a rifle and 2 trackers with machetes. It’s time to leave all of our loose gear behind, ready our cameras and meet them.

Kubaha

We hear some rustling and catch glimpses of black hair. It’s happening! We come around a bend, and there is Kubaha, the dominant male silverback of the family. I cry. We are standing 6 feet from a 24-year old, 450-pound gentle giant in the wild. We stand in awe. He just munches away on wild celery. Take some photos. Stop and admire. Look at his hands, his feet, his hair, his teeth, his face. We’re not supposed to look him in the eye for too long! He keeps eating. The experts make intermittent conciliatory grunts, making sure he knows that we mean him no harm.

A few other family members are eating nearby, so the machetes bushwhack us over to a young adult male and a juvenile also eating. It is not at all what I expected in terms of location. I had an image of sitting in a semi circle in a clearing, observing them from the specified 20 feet away. Instead, we are wedged into a small gash in the forest, just a few meters from each gorilla, trying to take photos, observe them and stay out of each other’s way, all while trying to avoid backing into stinging nettles, which really do sting through clothes! At one point, I am crouched down just soaking it all in when the young male decides he is done eating and walks right past me on 2 legs, brushing me on his way past. Amazing!!

We are called back to Kubaha, who is just finishing mowing down one area. He leaves that clearing, walks over, sits down beneath an old tree, eats some more and falls asleep. One of his other children climbs into the stump above him and falls asleep as well. Suddenly, into the clearing left by Kubaha enters a 10-month old baby!! I cry again. He ninja-rolls into the clearing, does a mock chest beat and sits down to eat as well. The baby’s mom sits down next to him, although she wants nothing to do with us and puts her back to the group. We spend the rest of our hour with this tableau. Taking photos. Taking selfies. Enjoying these incredible animals and hoping that they are safe. Kubaha is so relaxed that he actually lays down in child’s pose, which is how we leave him eventually in the clearing. We say our goodbyes and back out respectfully.

What a tremendous experience!

I am overwhelmed with gratitude that we had the chance to experience this in nature. We found them. It exceeded expectations. And it was absolutely worth it. Thank you Isabukuru family. Stay safe.

Ready to run!

(Reis) We pulled up to the outpost in the limos of Longyearbyen (which is not saying much, given that they were 15 year old Ford vans repurposed as shuttles to our destination), and the smell hit us immediately. It was hard to describe but it was something that smelled awfully like 60 unwashed dogs in a yard, sitting in their own… filth. Oh wait, it was. To give you some context, this aroma was on par with the giant haul-up of walruses we had seen just 3 days before- except the walruses had about 2 metric tons on these dogs, and the lifestyle of a walrus is much more sedentary than that of a dog. Long story short, it smelled bad, but that did not deter us from our desired objective. We were going to go dogsledding (the “we” to which I am referring is the 6explorers plus 3 of our good family friends who were along for the ride). This event was to be Emma’s 17th birthday celebration, partly because we were eager to try out this storied method of transportation, and partly because we had 5 hours in Longyearbyen, a bustling metropolis of 1,800, and we had exhausted the limited attractions boasted by this city the day before. And so, here we were, a couple miles outside the city center in a foul-smelling reconstruction of a trapper’s outpost from the 1600’s, ready to go.

Reis and Alex in control

We made quick introductions with our two guides, Adelheid and Niklas, who would instruct us in the many intricacies of the process. The first step of said process was to don the spacesuit-looking jumpsuits, partially for the brisk air and partially to protect us from any stray dog scat that may or may not have been ever-present during this entire two-hour span. Next, the fun part, we had to harness the dogs to each “sled.” I use quotation marks here to denote that they were in fact not sleds, but rather four-wheel carts with a long wire lashed onto it on which the dogs would pull, thus moving the cart. There was a whole procedure for actually putting the harnesses on the dogs, but in the end, each cart ended up with six dogs harnessed at the front. I should note another key member of the “five senses” which was quite present in this scenario, that being sound. The dogs that we would be using were Alaskan huskies, a kind of dog that is bred with running in their blood. And boy do they run. So all of the dogs in this yard were itching to be chosen and have the opportunity to go out and do what they do best. Therefore, most every dog there, save the few shy ones, were howling and whining and barking and yapping and stomping and jumping to be chosen. When each of the five sleds were prepped and ready to go, we were off by way of a sharp, foreign word in Norwegian understood by the lead dogs to mean “get moving.”

Great fun!

Great fun!

In each cart there was one driver and one passenger. The driver, who stood chariot-style at the back of the cart, was in control of the whole vehicle—the speed and the direction. The direction was fairly simple; there was a set of bicycle handlebars that moved the tires and pushed the dogs to turn, but speed wasn’t as easy. See, normally these kinds of dogs have only two speeds, full-throttle and chained down. And so, one had to apply the bike-style brakes quite heavily in order for there to be any lowering of speed (which was required by the guides, because we didn’t want to exhaust the dogs). We trotted along at our guide-approved speed for two or three miles before we reached our turn-around point. However, this turn-around was quite the ordeal in itself. Given that the full length of the sled-with-dogs was about 15 feet, you can imagine that turning 180° would be pretty difficult. So, one person had to hop out of the cart and help guide the dogs around in a circle (it also probably didn’t help that our turn around zone was the small loading area for an old coal mine). Here, we swapped drivers and headed back to the basecamp.

Birthday kisses

Birthday kisses

After returning, we were keen for a shower, having travelled through a sizeable amount of dust, sweated buckets in the spacesuits, and gone through five miles of dog farts and flying poop which the dogs expelled en route. But, arguably the best was still to come, the puppies. Back at the yard, there was a separate section cordoned off just for the husky puppies. Based on the picture above, you can tell that they were definitely cute puppies, and I will let the picture speak for itself.

So there you have it, our Svalbardian (Svalbardese, Svalbardish…?) dogsledding adventure. It was a great way to spend (fill) four hours of empty space, and also a very enjoyable birthday for Emma, or at least I hope.

Year old crocs getting bigger

(Andrew) With over 44,000 crocodiles, Padenga Crocodile Farm on Lake Kariba is one of the largest of its kind. At the age of 3, its reptilian inhabitants are slaughtered for their precious skin, which is sold in today’s markets. We arrived off of our houseboat and were greeted by a pool of disinfectant to dip our shoes in so as not to transmit outside filth that might sicken the multitude of crocs. Our guide from the company met us on the inside of the large white gate that separated rural area from multi-hundred-worker company and we started out tour. This huge farm is probably the most successful one in Africa and the numbers and statistics involved are downright amazing. Every year the farm gathers 20,000 eggs from its breeding crocodiles (the ones who have outlived the 3-4 year-old culling age). Interestingly, one female crocodile lays anywhere from 40-80 eggs in one clutch! These eggs are then shipped to another branch of the company on Lake Kariba where they are incubated for 82 days, hatch, and are cared for. A year later the “batch” is returned and consists of only 17,000 due to premature deaths. These babies are then placed into one of over 100 rectangular enclosures with pools in the middle. We only saw a fraction of the 100, but still what we could see was amazing. These enclosures are cleaned every other day by one man who walks in with thick galoshes and sweeps all of the putrid-smelling croc poop out. The water in the pool is drained at that time and replaced with fresher water to get dirty. This dung-contaminated water, unfortunately, is then dumped into the lake. Also on the same schedule, the crocs get fed. 6 men drop croc-sausages in each pen. These sausages consist of capentha fish, soya, oils, vitamins, supplements, and a large percentage of crocodile meat. Ew. Crocs are designed to be killing machines so any type of meat will be sufficient for them, even if it makes them cannibalistic.

One of the REALLY big boys

After the baby pens, we passed a handful of enclosures filled with at least 45-year-old ones who were all at least 10 feet long and weighed 800-1,000 pounds! Those guys are truly the last living dinosaurs. The older ones’ teeth can reach 5 inches long and 3 inches thick. One of these guys could most likely bite a grown man in half – with ease. After the old monsters, we passed a pen full of albino crocs of the same gigantic size. Their lighter skin makes them much more valuable to buyers, and therefore to the company, even though they receive the same treatment as the others.

Bathing in the pink potassium permanganate

Later in the tour we passed 5 more enclosures of 100-150 crocodiles whose skin had an odd pink hue. The pink water they were in that contained potassium permanganate, a chemical, justified that color. We learned that these were the almost 3-year-old crocs about to be culled. The chemical’s job is to get rid of any fungi and imperfections on the skin that could decrease the value of the precious leather they produce. Also to prevent the value decrease, these crocs’ teeth are filed down and blunted so they cannot bite and puncture each other’s hide.

Making yummy croc sausage for the crocs

To end our tour we passed the small factory where they made the sausages. They grind and mash all the ingredients up and put the sludge into a machine. The machine then squeezes the sludge out into long tubes of the stuff, which looks like one of those Play-Dough toys. The tubes are then cut to make the sausages.

We also witnessed a man cutting out the stomach of a dead croc. When we asked our guide why he was doing this, he answered that the older crocs, some of which were kidnapped from the wild, did not eat the sausages because it didn’t look like game, which their instincts told them they wanted to eat. So, the feeders stuff the nutrient-filled sausages into the croc stomach so the crocs think it is an animal and accept it. We ended our tour and took our tender back to the boat. What really struck me about the farm is that we, as Americans, think of crocodile skin objects as disgusting because it is cruel to animals but our treatment of cows to get leather is the same, or worse, as how this farm treated their crocs. Sadly though, we adore leather and it is very popular while crocodile leather is abhorred even though the cruelty is probably more in the cow-leather industry.

More yummy croc food for the bigger crocs

Looking tasty at the back

(Greg) We hadn’t yet been told that, just a few weeks earlier, a Zimbabwean fellow had been killed by a lion exactly where we were walking, but I didn’t need that happy yarn to keep me on my toes. This was our first walking safari and I felt a certain responsibility to my own four cubs as we cautiously, alertly, made our way through the bush in search of the cape buffalo carcass and the lions likely enjoying it.

We were camping at Chitake Springs along the Great Rift Valley escarpment in Northern Zimbabwe. It was dry, but a magical spring sprang from the sands here and animals of all shapes and sizes came for refreshment. Because of this, we were likely to encounter all sorts of intriguing beasties as we walked: elephant, buffalo, baboon, hyena, leopard and lions. The big fear, according to our trusty (and armed) guide and friend Fausto, were lone male buffalo or elephant Moms with calves. There seemed to be lots of these around, too. As it was afternoon, the predator cats were not really a major concern unless we stumbled upon them. Nonetheless, I kept my ears tuned and eyes skinned, particularly as we were walking in single file and I, gallantly, volunteered to hold the rear flank. As I walked and thought about my position, I really couldn’t imagine a massive eating-machine attacking the middle of the line. Just doesn’t happen like that. Maybe he would pounce at the front of the line, but that guy had a big rifle. In nature, the last impala is the slowest impala; the fittest rarely take up the rear. It didn’t take long for me to see the big picture and the disadvantaged position I was in.

Rhinos are MUCH bigger when seen from the ground

I became bobble head Greg. Every stick snapping, every bird calling, every insect buzzing was a warning signal of impending luncheon and I was determined to spot it, anticipate the strike and, like a flash, dodge the beast and let it have Dana. At which point I would poke it with a thorny stick, the beast would retreat muttering something about “c-ourage” and I would, once again, be the brave beloved impala that maybe should not have been at the back of the line after all.

Sadly, nothing attacked and my bravery went unnoticed. I did get a big thorn in my shoe though.

Justifiably concerned before paddling

(Emma) Since it contains hippos, crocodiles and the occasional elephant, it is perfectly natural to be afraid of going anywhere near the Zambezi River. So, one might say it is insane to go canoeing on the river, but that didn’t stop us. Alex, Andrew and Reis were all too afraid of death, so they passed on the opportunity. We boarded the canoes and said goodbye to the intelligent family members remaining on land. Luckily, I was in a canoe with our guide, Fausto, which made me feel the most secure, considering he is the only one who has had experience with hippos and crocs on the water… and because he was carrying a revolver in case of a dire situation!

I'm not worried, do I look worried?

As frightened as I was throughout the excursion I did get to appreciate the beauty. It was that late afternoon hour when the golden light illuminates the surrounding land. When I looked to the right I could see Zimbabwe and when I turned my head 180 degrees Zambia was right there. We paddled through small islands and maneuvered around dead logs that floated downstream. I couldn’t imagine anything more peaceful and serene, but nature proved that it could get better. We came across a herd of four female elephants eating and drinking right at the edge of the bank. We passed right by them and they couldn’t be bothered by our presence. This confirmed elephants are my favorite animal.

She seems even bigger from water level

We paddled (and floated) down the river as the sun began to set. I closed my eyes to enjoy the tranquility, then “PFFFFFFFFF” This was the warning call of the hippo. The hippos make this noise when they feel their space is being intruded, or they feel threatened. Fausto told us to paddle faster and try to avoid the territory of this hippo. My heart started to beat faster and I began to wonder if this was the end of me. I pushed that thought out of my head, realizing how ridiculous it was, and paddled more rapidly than before. We were then informed that we passed the hippo’s territory and I could stop my aggressive paddling. Although watching the sun set over the Zambian escarpment from the perspective of the water may have been one of the more gorgeous things I have seen in my life; I was relieved and thankful to step onto solid ground alive.

We knew that they existed, of course, but in all seven weeks of safari on our big trip, there was no evidence of any dogs. African Painted Dogs, or more commonly known as Wild Dogs, are very endangered in Africa and this fact made me want to see them even more while we had the opportunity in Zimbabwe.

After arriving at the first airstrip, our guide Fausto and his wife Josie told us to keep our eyes peeled as we drove since the area was a prime place for Wild Dogs. I was sitting on the edge of my seat as we made our way through the plains hoping that every movement was not an impala or a small guinea fowl, but a pack of dogs. Two more days of amazing walking safaris in Chitake and it was time to move on to our next destination in Mana Pools with, unfortunately, no luck in spotting Wild Dogs. As we drove off to Mana, I continued to silently look for the endangered animal. Suddenly, I spotted something in the corner of my eye that looked like a silhouette of an ear twitching from the other side of a thick, thorny bush. “Uhhhh dogs!” I whispered to myself as we drove right past the bush they were hiding behind. “DOGS”, I yelled over the loud safari car engine to Fausto who immediately stopped the car. By then it was obvious that they were a pack of the rare canines because the bush could no longer conceal their figures. Bending the park rules a bit (shh don’t tell anyone), we drove off the road and closer to the animal that I was so anxious to see. Pulling closer and closer, we counted a pack of six dogs, escaping the hot African sun. These dogs were even cuter in real life than they were in pictures, I just wanted to go give them a hug, but rational thinking snapped me out of that thought considering they could reduce my body to bones in about fifteen minutes. I was overwhelmed with excitement. Not only had we seen Painted Dogs, but I had spotted them (a rarity in our family as I am usually the last one to identify an animal). As we drove away, all I could think about was my clan of doggies and how nothing could make that day bad.

Now all that’s left on our checklist is an aardvark, but those actually probably don’t exist.

The female relatives singing before the event

(Dana) In many cultures, there is a rite of passage – an event that marks the transition into adulthood.  At home, some teens become a bar/bat mitzvah; others are confirmed.  In the Hamar tribe in Southern Ethiopia, girls of marrying age (14/15) are circumcised.  Boys of ~18-21 prove their maturity through bull jumping.

When a boy is ready for marriage, his father will find and negotiate a bride for him.  Without telling the boy about his intended, his father will begin a 4-7 day celebration, culminating in the rite of bull jumping.  This is not a show arranged for foreigners; there is no set schedule.  Sometimes there will be two in one week, and other times six months in-between.  We were lucky; during our stay, Aska from the Shafala village would be making his transition.

Aska, apprehensive, before his rite of passage

After a two-hour bouncy drive including way too many kilometers down a dry, sandy riverbed, we arrived at Aska’s ceremony.  The first step was a financial transaction with the village elders – a pre-arranged 400 birr ($20) per visitor to witness and photograph the event.  Interestingly, we were berated later by several Hamar women; even without translation, it was clear they didn’t know that we had paid the men.  Classic… the women do the work and the men are paid!

We settled into the sand as the events began to unfold:

1.  Aska’s female relatives sing songs, blessing the future groom. Blowing horns, they call to their relatives to join the festivities.  As they jump in traditional dances, their hair – in ringlets and coated with butter and ochre – bounces to the beat.  Wor Worra – bells on a band around their calves – echo through the river valley.

A relative receiving the whip

Most importantly, the women taunt the groom’s best men, exhorting them to whip them.  Yes, whip them.  The stronger and more numerous the lashes, the more power is transferred to Aska for his bull jumping.  Woosh…snap!  I watch her face closely; not a flinch.  Maybe it’s the power of the ritual; maybe it’s the sorghum beer.  The cycle of songs and whipping continue.  Aska watches.

2.  Aska’s male relatives arrive with bulls and take them to the jumping site.  At some point, the entire group – a hundred Hamar followed by 20 camera-wielding tourists – starts walking to the site.  One of Aska’s relatives, Yito, complete with raw lash marks, grabs my hand, and we climb up the hill, along a path fringed by thorny bushes.  Dozens of sets of bells are clanging around me; the sound vibrates through me.  We reach the clearing and the whipping resumes until one elder determines enough has been done.

Dana's elder friend

3.  The female relatives’ job isn’t done.  Now they must circle the bulls, chanting blessings and singing in an effort to lull the cows into a docile state for Aska’s jumping.  Meanwhile, the Maza – males who have jumped before – prepare Aska, offering him power and advice.  We are sitting quietly next to the group of women villagers.  The laughter and chatter in Hamar, along with the strong smell of ochre, sweat and earth, wash over me.   Smiling and nodding my respect, I show them some of the photos I have taken.  One elder women (probably my age) finds them incredibly humorous and grabs her friend so that I can take their photo also.  Soon I am sharing laughs and pictures with several of the women around me and even one previously stone-faced, rifle-toting warrior!

Aska sprints across the bulls

4.  Finally, four bulls are chosen and lined up next to each other.  The best men hold them by the mouth and the tail.  Aska is naked except for his ceremonial beads.  When it is time, he leaps up onto the first bull and sprints awkwardly across the backs of the other three bulls.  He must complete 3-4 passes or he will fail.  Incredibly, if he fails, it will be his female relatives who will be punished.  They will be whipped more because they obviously weren’t passionate enough the first time! 1…2…3…4!  A few stumbles and one false start, but he has done it!  He is congratulated by the entire village.

At tonight’s celebrations, Aska’s father will tell him who he will marry.  To the Hamar, Aska is now a man.

The whipping is very, very real

The Ethiopian giant slalom

(Reis) Riding in our 4×4 vehicles on the crazy, bumpy roads of Ethiopia had no shortage of wild and well… bumpy experiences. Important to understanding our long pilgrimages to and from villages is that most of the roads in this country are made of dirt, a substance quite susceptible to the elements. The displacement of rocks and gravel by water and wind litter the road in the form of potholes, divots, and bumps. This makes for a jolting, jarring, jouncing ride. And justified with that, we learned to cherish the solace of paved roads. Paved roads are impervious to the water that can easily make a solid dirt path a squelching mud pit. One day, we were driving to a museum in the dirty city of Jinka, when we found ourselves faced with a challenge. A large fuel tanker was sprawled diagonally across the road, stuck in the mud trying to get up a steep hill, and restricting our access to the museum. We ended up turning around and taking the less direct and bumpier road to our destination. The bumpy and high-risk dirt roads endeared us more to their flat and frankly easier cousin, the pavement.

Under construction, but still in use

But nonetheless, as we rolled along, troops of kids would run after the car, screaming “Allo! Allo! Allo!” or just stringing together long stretches of incomprehensible vowels in consonants. Some of the kids barraging our cars would, much to our chagrin, beg for “Soap! Money! T-shir! Watuh! Pen! Shoe!” in warped English. While others still would timidly wave more reservedly from a safe distance, but grin shyly as the “forengi” (foreigners) smiled and waved back. Many times we would reach a roadblock of dozens of cows or goats being led by their carefree herders, and the kids would catch up, screaming and giggling, vying for our attention and smiles. Sometimes they would catch-up, palms-up, and vie for our goods.

Dump truck mistake

On the excursions through the Ethiopian countryside, we would often glimpse some spectacular African wildlife, and slow the van to admire (and rubberneck to look at) what was spotted. Though, many times, it was a goat half-hidden by the thick African brush, to which was enthusiastically exclaimed, “What’s that?!?” One certainly memorable and crazy thing that happened to us is, as we tried earlier to reach the museum during our day in Jinka, we found a huge pile of stripped eucalyptus trees covering the entire road. We discovered that they had been haphazardly placed into the back of a truck, but had protruded out the back, so the rear door was not closed. When the truck attempted to go up a hill, the luggage in the back slid out of the truck’s carriage, onto the road, thus blocking our passage to our destination. We ended up turning around and trying again two hours later, only to find as referenced earlier, a diagonally facing truck blocking us on a very similar hill. The Fates did not want us to get to that museum.

Overall, although some of us dreaded these long drives, many of us learned to love the giggling children, and the unexpected (usually bovine) challenges and experiences thrown at us along the way. You may know the phrase “It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey”; it was tossed around a lot on our trip. Although most of our Ethiopian adventure was about the destination (seeing the villages, greeting the people), the journeys added a sense of fun and mystery when driving to and from these unique and wonderful places. It was a pleasant, and bumpier, version of the monotonous US highways and roads, on which millions of people travel each and every day.

Andrew shows some kids the magic zipper

(Andrew) Giggles erupt from the group of 40 Karo children as I bounce a knock-off Super Pinky Ball on the dusty ground. They run after it once it takes an odd bounce off a stone. The kids sprint after it, eager to be the next one to throw it. An older kid of no older than 15 snags it out of the air. Much to my surprise he throws it up at least 50 feet in the air. As it bounces, more giggles are heard from the small children. They reach up to the sky to receive the ball that has bounced once and they all pack together in a tight circle for the chance to be the next recipient. The process repeats.

Reis with his entourage

Our experience at a Karo village in the Omo Valley in Southern Ethiopia was exquisite: not beaten by many of the multitude of cultural experiences we had from 2010-2011. We arrived after a bumpy 2.5-hour car ride and, truthfully, our expectations were pretty low because of our experience the day before with the Dassenech tribe who went up to us continually asking for photos (which lead to the dishing out of Ethiopian Birr). Our 4x4s stopped and we were awestruck by the view. The muddy-brown Omo River dominated the landscape that was seen from atop the steep, sandy hill we stood upon, complemented by a vast, verdant land. It amazed me how abruptly the dry landscape changed to green due to water. We then took a tour of their humble village, trailed by the 40 kids: all trying for a piece of our hands to hold. We got to go inside one of the huts and see how the people live. In the building there were an old woman and man, who communicated to us through our local guide then through our country guide, and a baby. A fire was smoldering and the interior smelled much like smoke. We passed ladies grinding sorghum; a long process where the small pellet seeds were turned into flour used in local beer and bread. Our procession also passed a woman shaving her 2-month-old baby’s head with a razor blade. Our guide Eyob told us that the woman would only use that blade on that one baby as to reduce the chance of HIV spreading.

Teaching Supercali

After the tour of the village, the fun really began. We got to take pictures of the exotically dressed residents and bond with them. The bouncy ball game resumed and the mob of laughing, screaming children re-formed. The best part of this after-tour experience was the resurrection of the White Family Singing Group and our reprisal of Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. It took me two rounds of embarrassment and forgetfulness before the motions came rushing back to me. Subsequent to our performance, we began to teach the kids the dance moves. The outcome was funny from the effort the kids put into it, but the quality didn’t matter because we had so much fun.

The last activity in which we participated was the small kids sand-jumping games. As I mentioned before, the village was situated upon a sandy hill and there were mini-sand bluffs off of which the kids leaped, bubbly with excitement. They soared through the sky, their laughter piercing the dusty air, and landed five feet down the hill. As they sprinted back up with vigor, the jumpers urged us to join. Reis and I gave it a shot and enjoyed it greatly. I’m sure the memory of this Karo village will live with me for the rest of my life.

While practicing passing, shooting, and dribbling is essential, players also need a solid fitness routine to perform at their best throughout an entire match. Incorporating the right exercises into regular training can improve athletic performance, reduce the risk of injury, and help players stay competitive at every level of the game.

If you love soccer and want to follow your favorite teams in the World Cup, you may get Live Football Scores and updates on match schedules and results.

Squats for Lower Body Strength

Squats are one of the best exercises for soccer players because they strengthen the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves. Powerful leg muscles contribute to stronger shots, higher jumps, and quicker acceleration. Whether using body weight or additional resistance, performing squats regularly helps build the strength needed for explosive movements on the field.

Lunges to Improve Balance and Stability

Lunges are excellent for developing single-leg strength, which is important since soccer players frequently kick, pivot, and change direction while standing on one leg. This exercise also improves balance, coordination, and flexibility while strengthening the hips and core. Walking lunges, reverse lunges, and lateral lunges all provide valuable benefits for soccer performance.

Sprint Drills for Speed

Speed can often make the difference between winning and losing possession. Short-distance sprint drills help players develop explosive acceleration and improve their ability to chase down opponents or break away from defenders. Training with repeated sprints also enhances recovery between high-intensity efforts during a match.

Agility Ladder Drills

Quick footwork is a major advantage in soccer. Agility ladder exercises improve coordination, reaction time, and the ability to change direction rapidly. These drills teach players to move their feet efficiently, making it easier to evade defenders and maintain control of the ball in tight spaces.

Plyometric Exercises

Plyometric movements such as box jumps, jump squats, and lateral hops help develop explosive power. These exercises strengthen fast-twitch muscle fibers, allowing players to jump higher for headers, accelerate faster, and react more quickly during competitive play. Plyometric training should be performed with proper technique to maximize results and minimize injury risk.

Planks and Core Workouts

A strong core provides stability during nearly every soccer movement, from passing and shooting to shielding the ball from opponents. Exercises like planks, side planks, Russian twists, and bicycle crunches strengthen the abdominal and lower back muscles. Improved core strength also enhances balance and reduces the likelihood of lower back injuries.

Deadlifts for Overall Strength

Deadlifts strengthen the hamstrings, glutes, lower back, and core, all of which contribute to powerful running and jumping. They also help improve posture and body control. When performed with proper form, deadlifts can increase overall athletic strength while helping prevent common lower-body injuries.

Endurance Running

Soccer players often cover several miles during a single match, making cardiovascular fitness essential. Combining long-distance runs with interval training helps build endurance while preparing the body for repeated bursts of high-intensity activity. Interval workouts closely mimic the stop-and-go nature of an actual soccer game.

Flexibility and Mobility Exercises

Stretching and mobility work are often overlooked but play an important role in athletic performance. Dynamic stretches before training prepare the muscles for movement, while static stretching after exercise improves flexibility and aids recovery. Foam rolling and mobility drills also help reduce muscle tightness and maintain a healthy range of motion.

Single-Leg Balance Exercises

Balance exercises strengthen stabilizing muscles around the ankles, knees, and hips. Standing on one leg, using a balance board, or performing single-leg Romanian deadlifts can improve stability and reduce the risk of ankle sprains. Better balance also translates into improved control during challenging game situations.

Recovery Exercises

Recovery is just as important as intense training. Light cycling, swimming, walking, and gentle stretching promote blood flow and help muscles recover after demanding practices and matches. Adequate rest, hydration, and proper nutrition further support recovery and prepare players for their next training session.

Developing into a better soccer player involves much more than practicing with the ball. A balanced training program that includes strength exercises, speed drills, agility work, endurance training, flexibility, and recovery helps athletes perform at a higher level while reducing their risk of injury. By consistently incorporating these exercises into their routine, soccer players can build the physical foundation needed to excel throughout the season.

We all remember our fascination with the physical prowess of brawny men. There’s something about the mustaches, the short shorts, the faded pictures of big eye glasses, and slabs of meat for traps. I was 23 when I started 70sBig.com.

I had some sort of infatuation with masculinity. I don’t think it was particularly toxic or misguided, though I look back and cringe at things I wrote and said. Given I had a history playing contact sports and lifting, I was impressed with tales of physical prowess. I wanted to be big and strong because I didn’t feel it inside.

I didn’t aim to glorify masculinity, but to exude it in a respectable way. You may remember the satirical trilogy acting as a call to arms in order to be fashionably masculine. The claim was wearing short shorts, flannel, and tank-tops amusingly portrayed your brawniness and physical progress. And we shouldn’t be afraid to do so if the style wasn’t weird or creepy.

Given that this theme stuck with me for so many years, I feel obligated to update my position. Masculinity is just a construct representing men, and it changes with time. As with any personality construct, letting it consume your identity typically results in losing a sense of self in order to be something else. Any specific personality trait does not fully define an individual.

I hope I was clear in my younger years about how masculinity is not being a dickhead. I always had an aversion to Tommy Tough Guyism, and that continued when I was in Special Forces. I had a Sergeant Major routinely ask people if they wanted to fight, or randomly proclaiming he could kick someone’s ass. Regardless of why he was like that, he wasn’t cool.

There’s something in men that makes them feel they have to prove themselves. Maybe it’s the lingering concepts of masculinity we have from past generations. Imagine what living through World War II was like. Fighting for the liberation of your people was considered heroic, and there are men who carry guilt for not fighting in their country’s war. As someone who has been to war and seen all of its faces, I reject this concept.

Being a man doesn’t mean finding the most difficult tasks and overcoming them. We hear stories of these deeds dating back to Odysseus, and it’s ingrained in our world view. From a philosophical point of view, I would label this as “unnecessary suffering”. Life is inherently full of unavoidable and heartbreaking suffering. At some point, you or everyone you love will die. It’s unavoidable. So, in between bouts of unavoidable suffering, we benefit from seeking out the beauty life entails.

There are some forms of suffering we partake in on purpose, such as exercising and training. We know we are doing something to cause mild damage in order to produce an improved adaptation. The intention matters because we do it to improve something specific about ourselves.

But mental and emotional improvement don’t follow the same trajectory. Yes, you can inoculate yourself to stress and hardship. In Special Forces training, I didn’t eat for ten days and didn’t sleep for five. I carried men on my back while carrying a heavy ruck. I have also maneuvered and destroyed the enemy in combat. Yet I was wired for war and experienced crippling depression and trauma symptoms.

My capability to withstand stress, suffering, and pain is beyond anything I thought was possible. But it doesn’t make me more of a man. It just means I’ve been through some awful shit. And it doesn’t mean you have to experience anything similar to me.

The truth is, emotional and mental resilience isn’t about enduring more pain or testing your limits in extreme ways. It’s about understanding and addressing the emotional wounds that come from those experiences, something that’s often overlooked in the pursuit of toughness. Healing is just as important as enduring, and it’s something that doesn’t always come naturally.

It’s why more people are seeking out treatments like ketamine therapy to help them process trauma and depression in a meaningful way. Avesta Ketamine Wellness offers a safe space for individuals who are struggling to reconcile their experiences with mental wellness. The therapy allows for deep emotional healing by promoting neuroplasticity, which helps rewire the brain and foster new patterns of thought and emotional regulation. This isn’t about suffering more or pushing through—it’s about recovery and rebuilding a healthier relationship with one’s mind.

For anyone who has been through hardship, it’s vital to understand that seeking help to heal is just as vital as the strength you have in enduring. Comparing suffering lacks self-compassion, because if someone has suffered more, inadequacy blooms. Regardless of the relative intensity of your suffering, it still matters and deserves respect. For Lynchburg menopause treatment, contact Widmeyer Optimal Wellness to support your health and well-being during life’s transitions.

Just because you haven’t faced the same things as me doesn’t mean you don’t suffer, or that you aren’t worthy of acknowledging it. If you got a comfortable job and built a family, and you love them with all your heart, that is the most wonderful thing I can imagine. And it doesn’t have anything to do with being a man or masculinity.

Whether you’ve faced overwhelming adversity or smaller, quieter challenges, your pain is valid, and seeking support isn’t a weakness—it’s an act of strength. The idea that you must suffer alone to prove something is a myth that isolates people from the help they need. Finding the right support system, whether through friends, family, or professionals, allows for growth and healing, reinforcing that no one should have to carry their burdens alone.

This is where mental health professionals play an essential role. Therapists and counselors create spaces where people can process their emotions, navigate transitions, and reclaim their well-being. For those considering helping others in this way, understanding how to start a private practice can be the first step in offering meaningful support. The journey to healing is deeply personal, but it doesn’t have to be solitary. Whether you’re seeking help or providing it, acknowledging the value of mental health care fosters a culture where emotional struggles are met with empathy rather than judgment.

Partaking in avoidable suffering should always raise the question of whether it’s necessary. If a guy does something just because it’s hard, why? Why is there a need to do something hard in the first place? What is underneath the layers driving him to do such a thing? I’m not saying you should avoid volitional suffering, but to be aware of why you do it and the expected result.

Tommy Tough Guys typically have a low self-esteem which makes them project a level of assertive aggressiveness to make up for it. This can come out in antagonistic behavior, insults, and so on. This isn’t manly; it’s being a dickhead.

One of the tenets of 70s Big was encouraging people to compete in athletics, particularly powerlifting or Olympic weightlifting. I guess my opinion was society generally lacked effective competition in adulthood, and it can teach useful qualities (e.g. goal setting, adherence, inspiration, etc). It also creates a state of ownership about one’s training; once they sign up for a competition, there’s a different focus on the process of training. If someone is drifting in life, even with a family and secure job, then competition can inject excitement into their hobby. This can be a good thing.

Seeking competition as a means of validation or to claim superiority seems an unhealthy paradigm bordering on obsession. We benefit from understanding why we truly want to do a thing. We lift weights and perform conditioning or cardio for the varied health, performance, and aesthetic benefits. But something can happen at any time that forever prevents you from doing those things.

If you get into a car wreck and lose one or both legs, you may never squat the same. You may not be able to do some movements at all. This happened to me with my injury. I was known as “Thighs” at various points in my career and I loved to squat and power clean. Training was my life and supported my livelihood of conducting combat operations wearing 100lbs of kit. In a single instant, all of that exploded.

I could squat to a box right now with less weight than what I used to warm-up with. Yet my amputations were so traumatic, significant activity will cause skin or bone issues. And I can’t even bend my knees enough to do a full squat when I wear my prosthetics. While I can do a squatting motion, it isn’t the same.

My identity is inherently different. I cannot physically do the same things any more. Am I less of a man? Am I less Justin than before because my muscular legs and balls were blown off? The things we do or how we look don’t make us a man; how we behave and treat people does.

Manliness isn’t about raising boys to be men. It isn’t about having a subservient wife. It isn’t about de-feminizing a school system. It isn’t about owning and showing off guns and knives. It isn’t about being in combat. It isn’t about fighting other men. It isn’t refusing to wear a mask or receive a vaccination. And it certainly isn’t some ethos we are obligated to spread as gospel. It’s just a construct, and it’s different depending on who you ask.

The clothes you wear, the things you lift, and the deeds you do don’t make you a man. What makes you a man, or a good person, is how you behave and treat people. You can be hairy, brawny, and full of compassion. You can also be skinny-fat and love your family deeply. Consistently being a good person means more than any label you give your identity. And making a point to be good in the present always matters.

I’ve been fortunate enough to lead infantrymen in combat. When they leave the military, they routinely struggle with purpose and meaning. To me it seems akin to a projection of what we ought to be doing to matter, just like a projection of how masculine we should be. It’s not to say serving your country or competing in lifting won’t give you direction, but they aren’t the only ways to do so.

Personally, I have learned the purpose in life is to love and connect with the people who matter. And that’s attainable by anyone regardless of circumstance, strength, and prowess. It’s possible to have an experience that changes everything about you. So, if you place any personality traits on a pedestal, it may be worth reevaluating your values in life. And you don’t have to live up to anyone’s idea of what you should be. You certainly don’t have to listen to screaming Navy SEALs or professional tough guys.

If you think I’m tough and have overcome hardship, then let me be a new version of a Tough Guy for you: you are worthy right now without changing anything. You don’t need anything different to become a man. Lifting PRs and combat stories fade in time, but you can be an honorable and valued person at any time in the day. And it’ll have a greater impression on your life and those around you than shooting or lifting weights. By all means, enjoy those things, but we need your kindness in a world full of unavoidable suffering.

However, giving thanks – or said another way – expressing gratitude, is wildly beneficial for the brain. There have been a variety of studies exhibiting this, including on participants seeking mental health treatment.

In one study, the group that wrote a letter of gratitude to someone each week for three weeks had significant better mental health at four and twelve weeks compared to the control group and a group who wrote about their deepest thoughts and feelings about negative experiences. In other words, doing just several sessions of gratitude had a persistent emotional improvement for months after doing it. If you’re wondering how to build on that progress, you might even be asking yourself, should I go on a trauma retreat to explore deeper healing? Consider incorporating this practice into your routine, perhaps even complemented by care package cookies to show appreciation in a tangible way.

Gratitude inherently has more positive words and feelings associated with it. Specifically, the association with using fewer negative words seemed to contribute to the results above. As someone who can spiral with negativity very easily (pain, loss, sadness, anxiety, etc.), this is very interesting, there’s a reason why I’m always thinking of visiting the Stiiizy dispensary locations. It may also help improve your mental health if you take a vacation and stay at a Flagstaff hotel.

Whether it’s the crisp mountain air or simply stepping away from daily stressors, these moments of escape contribute meaningfully to mental health and personal growth. However, for many, the desire for consistent vacation opportunities leads to timeshare investments, promising regular access to favorite destinations and familiar comforts.

Yet, the reality of timeshare ownership is often more complicated than the ideal. Navigating contracts and obligations can become overwhelming, detracting from the very peace of mind vacations are meant to provide. This is where the Aaronson Law Group comes into play, offering expert guidance to those seeking clarity or relief from challenging timeshare situations. Their expertise helps owners understand their rights and explore options for exit strategies or contract modifications, ensuring that the pursuit of relaxation does not come at the cost of financial or legal stress.

With such support, vacationers can regain control over their leisure time and truly enjoy the benefits of rest and gratitude without hidden burdens.Ask ChatGPT

Expressing gratitude with Sturgill on stage

Oh, and the participants still felt the benefits of gratitude when they didn’t even send the letter they wrote to the intended recipient. However, my personal experience with expressing gratitude to someone I care about is scary, yet it is the very definition of ordinary courage that Brene Brown talks about in “The Gifts of Imperfection”. Doing so strengthens the connection and bond with that person.

Expressing gratitude promotes more positive thinking and less negative thinking. It’s difficult to do in the throes of suffering, which is why I recommend dedicating time to express gratitude. Today is a perfect opportunity to start, but it shouldn’t happen once a year. Regularly contemplate what you’re grateful for and explore why. I find journaling to be a great time to do this because it allows a better organization of thoughts and is a deliberate practice. Set time aside for gratitude as it will have monumental effects.

While there are immediate effects of doing this – such as improving acute emotions – the full benefit takes time to develop. Behavioral and thought habits rarely change instantaneously; to make something a habit you have to make it a habit. Also, brain adaptations don’t spontaneously occur. You must expose your physiology to the new stimulus and function for it to adapt. There are literal structural neural adaptations occurring in the brain resulting from expressing gratitude.

fMRI supports this. Gratitude activates regions of the brain associated with learning, rational thinking, and decision making. There are regions of the brain that interact with each other for given tasks. Negative emotions yield a particular circuitry connection while positive emotions like gratitude and compassion result in a different kind of network connection. Coupled with a difference in neurotransmitters (brain chemicals), there are no-shit changes to how the brain functions as well adaptations that result from this improved networking. This isn’t just a matter of feelings; you can literally change and improve the form and function of the brain. All from simple tasks like gratitude journaling.

If we can do things in our day that improve our brain physiology resulting in hundreds of improvements to include disease prevention, then why wouldn’t we regularly do those tasks in the same way we exercise for our hearts, blood vessels, and muscles?

Pretty fucking good question, huh?

How’s it feel? It probably feels like the millions of breaths before it. It’s hard to even notice that it’s a free breath because it’s so common. You’re an American breathing freely while pursuing your life’s happiness. Historically speaking, there are thousands of men and women who sacrificed in order to maintain the freeness of these breaths, this freedom, that we take for granted.

We created a holiday, Memorial Day, that is supposed to honor the service members who committed the ultimate sacrifice – losing their life in the service of their country. Yet it has turned into a weekend of debauchery and gluttony.

Regardless of your political view on war, the recent wars, or the military itself, this is a day to acknowledge both the sacrifice and the reason for it. Most of the time when a young adult swears to defend the Constitution of the United States of America via military service, they are doing so because they believe they are serving the country. Our “country” includes all of the people in it, regardless of race, gender, or any other discriminatory identifier. And the service member knowingly makes a decision that reduces their freedom in hopes that it benefits both the country and everyone that exists in it.

USSF Soldiers conduct a patient movement during medical training.

While it’s true a service member has chosen their path of their own volition, it doesn’t mean the sacrifices are not multiple and varied. For years, I’ve written essays about this. Service members are told how to look, what to where, where to live, and what to do every day. They are often sent on training trips away from their family. And the silly bastards who choose to fight or support the combat arms are subjected to a litany of annoying discomfort, pain, and environmental duress. Deployments take service members overseas into war zones and third world countries. And if this wasn’t enough – being away from family and sacrificing freedom – people die. Friends die. Brothers and sisters die. And for the survivors, their reward is living with the physical and emotional effects of it all, including chemicals in the air, burn pits, horrible food, TBIs, and being worn down from wearing 50 to 100 pounds of additional gear on a regular basis. Children miss their parents, relationships end, hearts break, and suicide rates remain high.

I know all of this because I’ve fucking done it. I’ve trained for war at the expense of attending weddings, destroying relationships, and degrading my body. I’ve served in war and have almost been hit by RPGs, mortars, and machine gun fire. And now, after heart break and rebirth, I barely escaped death one more time after I stepped on an IED. The blast took its toll; I’m a double below the knee amputee. My testicles were blown off and I don’t know if the frozen samples taken from my body will allow me to father children. I’m just one person, just a regular dude who loves combat. But I’m not the only one.

We still regularly lose good men, good friends like Will Lindsay. I know there’s a lot of us, including his family, that would give anything to have him alive, even if he were a double amputee. For those who have faced the horrors of war, the aftermath is often a battle in itself. The wounds aren’t just physical but run deep into the soul, leaving scars that can’t always be seen.

In the quiet moments after the chaos of war, when the echoes of gunfire fade but the memories remain, many veterans find themselves wrestling with the unseen battles within. The weight of loss, the pain of injury, and the torment of unanswered questions can linger long after the dust has settled. It’s in these moments of introspection that some turn to a different kind of guidance. Seeking answers through psychic questions, they hope to find a sense of peace or clarity, a way to make sense of the sacrifices made and the path that lies ahead. While nothing can erase the past, sometimes the search for understanding can provide a flicker of light in the darkness, offering a connection to something greater, something beyond the battlefield.

SFC Will Lindsay and EOD SGT Joseph Collette were killed in combat operations on 22 March 2019.

Americans celebrate Memorial Day by partying, drinking, and feasting throughout a long weekend. But I humbly ask you to do two things. First, please take a moment to memorialize the fallen brothers and sisters. Consider their families and what happens in the aftermath of their deaths. And also remember those who live on with significant deficits. Second, after you’re done barbequing, the best way you can thank the fallen is by living as honorable a life as you can. Memorialize them by working hard for success and showing compassion to your fellow Americans and humans of the world. It’s the best celebration of freedom I can think of.

The life of a service member is not all shit and death. The point is that the people who do it believe they are doing it for you. For everyone. And themselves. And that they would die for you to maintain the right to criticize them is proof enough that it’s an amazing sacrifice. And they do die. And you don’t know their names. And that’s okay, because most of us don’t want a pat on the back. Instead, remember the fallen and live as honorably as you can on this Memorial Day and beyond. Lest we forget.

Taken in Afghanistan, 2018

A handful of years ago content on 70’s Big was hard to come by. You fine folk have been asking where I’ve gone ever since, and now I finally choose to let you know in the face of extraordinary circumstances. I am a United States Army Special Forces soldier, also known as a Green Beret. Ever since I put on the hat, I poured myself into this job in order to prepare for and participate in war. I wanted to kill people that deserve to be killed, save people that deserved to be saved (medically), and free people that deserve to be freed. And I did all of those things on my first deployment along with all kinds of combat and near-death experiences. I don’t think I’m cool; it’s more that I’m lucky to have been in a handful of fire fights and done things in order to live through them.  I assure you, there are much finer men than me who have been in much more combat and done much better things than I have.

While there were exciting times, there were others full of terrible loss. There are much finer men than me who have been in much more combat and done much better things than I have. I don’t think I’m cool; it’s more that I’m lucky to have been in a handful of fire fights and done things in order to live through them.

While there were exciting times, there were others full of terrible loss. There are much finer men than me who have been in much more combat and done much better things than I have. I don’t think I’m cool; it’s more that I’m lucky to have been in a handful of fire fights and done things in order to live through them.

Shifting from personal trials to everyday safety, it’s important to recognize how fire hazards can quietly exist in places we least expect—be it during public events, construction projects, or even large gatherings. This is where Fire Watch Security becomes essential, providing trained personnel who monitor for potential risks and act swiftly before a small spark turns into a disaster. Their quiet vigilance is often the difference between a close call and a catastrophic event, ensuring that people can focus on their lives without the looming worry of fire dangers.

While there were exciting times on the first deployment, there were others full of terrible loss. We lost a US Army Infantry soldier and I lost a long-term relationship. Because of those hardships, I spent 2018 preparing for a second combat deployment and, just as importantly, bettering myself as a healthy individual.

About one month into the next deployment we were on a combat operation in a very mountainous area. My element conducted a short hault and I discussed how we would clear a set of compounds that were tactically in a disadvantageous area. The area I stood had been cleared by EOD personnel and had foot traffic around the area. I shifted my weight under my ruck, took a step, and was blown up. As my best friends and teammates treated me, I gave them medical instructions to help their care. My teammates were heroes that day. Despite the initiation of a “troops in contact”, I didn’t die in the dirt in a far away land. Instead, they put me on a helicopter and countless other fine individuals did and continue to do their jobs of caring for me.

I am a double below the knee (BTK) amputee. The fact that my right leg is a BTK is amazing and a testament to the fantastic surgeons at Walter Reed. My testicles were also blown off, so I require testosterone replacement therapy for the rest of my life and whether or not I can have children is an unknown. I work hard every day to improve and will continue doing so. There’s no definitive date because there are too many variables, but I’ll leave the hospital some time later this year.

Lastly, the next question I’m asked is whether or not you can do anything for me. Your support is invaluable and all I could ever ask for. There are currently more of us wounded and killed, my friends included. If you should feel inclined to donate money, the Special Forces Foundation is an amazing organization. All of the money goes to us “wounded warriors” and the Gold Star families (the wives and families of personnel killed in action). I know the gentleman who runs it personally, and he’s both honorable and kind.

As for me, I’m good. My big medical issues are progressing as planned. Physical training and rehab are a part of my daily future, but I also rest and taking care of myself via meditation and journaling. I’ll take some time to let this situation percolate, but I’ll be back. There’ll be more writing, podcasts, and other ways to facilitate teaching, learning, and sharing. I’m especially interested in stories of extreme human experience and the lessons learned from them. Strength and conditioning will always be here, but my scope of practice has grown. It’ll be just like old times, but I’ll dive into any topic that is interesting and helpful.

When I was MEDEVAC’d, I went to the Role II and received 68 units of blood. Which is a lot. Above all else, I’m grateful to be alive. I’m honored you still think of me and even more honored when you want to donate. You can do so through the Special Forces Foundation (SFF). There’s also a fundraiser being conducted on my behalf called Climbing for Casualties. My friend Matt Randle will conduct an asinine climb in Nepal and donations go to the SFF. Look for @climbingforcasualties on Instagram. Again, thank you for your interest and I look forward to getting my legs jacked, pressing over body weight, entertaining you, and learning along the way. Stronger every day.

In the past, I routinely made the point that the way to memorialize service members who have died is to live as honorable a life as possible. But this year I’d like to add to that, because I’m not quite sure having parties is how everyone would celebrate the death of their own family members.

Regardless of your political view on war, the recent wars, or the military itself, this is a day to acknowledge both a sacrifice and the reason for it. Most of the time, when a young person swears to defend the Constitution of the United States of America via military service, they are doing so because they believe they are serving their country. Our “country” includes the people in it. A service member knowingly makes a decision that reduces their freedom in hopes that it benefits the country and the people who exist in it.

While it’s true a service member has chosen their path of their own volition, it doesn’t mean the sacrifices are not multiple and varied. They are told how to look, what to wear, and what to do. They are often sent on training trips away from their family, and the silly bastards in the combat arms are subjected to a litany of annoying discomfort, pain, and environmental duress. Other trips take them overseas, and at times those trips are in third world countries and war zones—where even a quick scroll through a Mississippi casinos list becomes a fleeting escape, a way to daydream about stateside odds without the house always winning. And if it wasn’t enough being away from family, freedom, and the United States of America, people die. And if they don’t die, they are exposed to things physically and emotionally that will affect them throughout their lives: chemicals in the air, burn pits, horrible food, TBIs, sleeping on cots, and generally getting worn down from all of it while carrying 50 to 100 pounds of gear on a regular basis.

Children miss their parents, relationships end, and hearts break for one reason or another. And suicide rates remain high.

It’s not all shit and death, but it’s not waving flags and barbecue. Love or hate the military, my point is the people who do it believe they are doing it for you. For everyone. And themselves. And they would die for you to maintain the right to criticize it. And they do. And you don’t know their names. And that’s okay, because nobody wants a pat on the back.

So, if you use Memorial Day for drinks and parties, just take a moment to acknowledge the masochistic decision to serve the country we all enjoy. And then please get back to living honorably.

For this cook I am smoking a couple racks of back ribs, more commonly referred to as baby backs.  If you aren’t familiar with the differences in cuts of pork this is a great article to help get some learnin’.  Around my area the biggest thing to know is the difference between back ribs and spare ribs since it’s what the stores carry.  The main difference is pretty much that back ribs are a bit smaller and more tender than spare ribs.  I’m normally a spare ribs guy, but the market only had backs this time so here we are.

The first thing I do is a bit of trimming.  You can see some fatty stuff, particularly on the bottom right of the rack on the bottom of the pic above, that I’ll trim off.  Also, if there is a skirt of meat on the bone side I like to trim that off.  Also, check along the edges of the racks to see if there are any small bone fragments, and if so clean those off.  The last thing I do for clean up is to pull the membrane off of the bone side of each rack.  The best method I’ve used is to take a butter knife to get under the membrane to start.  I’ll caution you though, there are a couple layers (not sure if the bottom layer is also membrane, I don’t science) and you only want the top layer to come off so you don’t expose all of the bones.  Once you’ve started the separation with the butter knife your best bet is to grip the membrane with a paper towel (it’s slipper otherwise) and hopefully pull it all off in one yank.

Below is a comparison shot between a rack that still has the membrane (top) and the one it’s been pulled from (bottom).

Once you are done trimming and pulling membranes you are ready to rub.  Similar to the pork butt I coat the ribs in a bit of olive oil first so the rub will stick nicely, then I go to town with the dry rub.  Again, pork is not a very flavorful meat on its own, so don’t be shy with the rub here.

For this cook I prepped and rubbed the ribs a few hours before putting them in the barrel with the idea I’d do a bit of a dry brine.  The rub I used has a good amount of salt which after some time brining should increase moisture and tenderness in the finished product.  If you’d like some info on dry brining you can read up on it here.  I just kept them on the tray and wrapped the whole thing.

Once it’s time to cook, and the barrel is going, I hang the racks and sit back for a couple hours.  After about two hours I’ll go and take a look to see how the bark is forming, and also see if the meat has started to pull back a bit to reveal the bones.  This is how I determine how close ribs are to being ready as opposed to monitoring internal temps.  At this point I’m looking for a nice mahogany crust and a bit of bone showing.

This step is optional depending on how you like your ribs, but I pull the ribs at this point for some sauce.  I like to sauce them during the cook so it thickens and caramelizes the sugar a bit, and I don’t add sauce when eating them.  Also, if your sauce has been in the refrigerator let it sit out for a while before this to bring it up to room temp.  No reason to add cold sauce onto hot ribs you have cooking.

After about another 30 minutes the ribs should be ready.  Again, take a look to see if the rib bones are showing – I look for about ¼” of bone showing to consider them ready.  After you pull them let them rest for about 20-30 minutes before cut

Dead Hot Summer V3.0 Update Release Notes

The apocalypse just got hotter. Amid the chaos of the Dead Hot Summer, we’re happy to deliver this ambitious systemic update. Built around a core philosophy of player agency, V3.0 gives survivors more freedom than ever to shape the apocalypse their way.

Version 3.0 introduces 150 sandbox customization options, giving players greater control over their survival experience. Survivors can fine-tune a wide range of settings to emphasize the parts of the game they enjoy most, or reduce and even disable systems they prefer to avoid, with the goal of letting players craft the survival experience they want. Player-made presets can also be shared with others, and we’ve created a selection of special preset modes of our own for players to experience.

Moment-to-moment survival is expanded through the introduction of Item Magnitude, a new system that reshapes how weapons and gear scale, alongside an optional Repair and Degradation settings that ensures every battle leaves a lasting impact. Together, these systems make loot more varied, meaningful, and rewarding to pursue, adding greater depth to progression and itemization.

The world itself has evolved. A full overhaul of POI signage powered by the new Sign-Tech system brings hundreds of new environmental signs to towns, compounds, businesses, and ruins, enhancing atmosphere, readability, and immersion across the wasteland.

Alongside these updates, Version 3.0 delivers a redesigned main menu, over 60 new POIs, and a customizable crosshair system. A new cosmetic outfit will also be available alongside the V3.0 Stable release.

A new scorched season of survival awaits. Read on to learn more:

Take Command of the Sandbox

  • A New Era of Control arrives. The V3.0 “Dead Hot Summer” update transforms the game into the ultimate survival simulator with 150 sandbox customization options. Whether reliving the tension of classic play styles with no magazines, turning off zombie digging, diving into a brand-new official preset like Undead Matinee, or forging entirely custom worlds through player-made presets, the power to define survival is now fully in your hands!
  • Your Rules. Your World. Your Survival Story. V3.0 introduces full sandbox preset creation and sharing, allowing players to build personalized survival experiences unlike anything before. Name your creations, fine-tune every setting, and unleash limitless gameplay permutations designed entirely around your vision of the apocalypse.
  • Along with the Classic Difficulty Presets, V3.0 comes with these brand-new Official Presets, including:
    • Undead Matinee – A melee-focused vintage movie-inspired mode with slower zombies, swarming numbers & scarce ammo. Includes the new headshot finisher setting.
    • Madmole’s Mayhem – Fewer supplies, harsher penalties, including the new item loss and item durability loss on death, along with constant pressure. Madmole… It smells good!
    • Almost Creative Mode – The apocalypse, minus the actual apocalypse. Because Dying Is Inconvenient.
    • Bite Club – Respawning is for cowards in this hardcore, perma-death mode. One life left; use it wisely.
    • Legacy Survival – Old-school survival with modern consequences. Play like it’s 2014.
    • 7 Days Later – Modern movie-inspired with chaotic hordes of fast-moving zombies.
    • Caveman’s Life – Survive an apocalypse where tools peaked at sticks.
    • Dumpster Diver – Turning Garbage Into Greatness. It’s not hoarding if you use it.
    • Dying World – Resources are fading, and you’re not far behind.
    • Disaster Film – Catastrophes stack faster than you can fix them.
    • Chibi Mode – Not only are they cute… They’re fast, too! Good thing you have some speed of your own.
  • For notes about Sandbox server configurations, V2.6 server save game compatibility, and a complete list of all Sandbox Options, see those sections below.

The Arms Race Begins with Magnitude

  • Powerful new Magnitude variants are changing the face of survival in V3.0, bringing boosted stats to looted weapons, tools, workstation mods, and more. An orange star will highlight the special stats along with a % in teal. You might find a Pickaxe with boosted block damage, a Shotgun with boosted range, a Machete with increased damage, or a Cooking pot with faster cooking time. The permutations are endless!
    • All tools and weapons will have a chance to roll boosted stats when found in loot.
      • Tools and weapons still have a chance for random stats and may show a teal percentage, but they are not considered boosted stats unless the stat is marked orange. This could allow combined items to cross over into a boosted range.
    • A wide variety of mods for armor, tools, vehicles, weapons, and workstations will now have progressive quality levels.
      • Higher-quality mods provide stronger bonuses. A Quality 1 Grave Digger mod adds 5% dirt damage, while a Quality 6 version adds 30%.
      • Not every mod benefits from higher qualities. Mods with simple on/off effects, such as the Helmet Light, are still limited to a single version.
  • Survivors can now use the new Combine Station to merge attributes of similar items to incrementally increase their power until they reach their full potential!  It also provides an alternative method for repairs! Traders will now carry Magnitude-enhanced equipment such as weapons with special boosted stats, creating a new high-end economy for serious survivors.
    • The highest percentage stats will be moved to the combined item regardless of quality.
    • When a boosted stat from a Quality 1 item shows 20%, combined with a Quality 6 item, it will have more impact on the Quality 6 item’s higher base stat.
  • With the various degradation and repair options available, players can now choose how punishing the apocalypse can be on items. Repair Method options include no repair, repair kits only, combine repair, or use both kits and combine. Permanent Repair Degradation can be set to 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25% of the item’s max durability per repair (the first repair is free). Death Degradation allows players to choose how much durability items will lose on death or even permanent max durability loss.
  • A new M60 turret has been added to help with those late game hordes. Uses all 7.62 ammo types.
